”A Knight is Sworn to Valour. His Heart Knows Only Virtue. His Blade Defends the Helpless. His Might Upholds the Weak. His Word Speaks Only Truth. His Wrath Undoes the Wicked.”

Every child in Cantôn knows of the Knight’s Code. From peasant-born waifs playing with sticks in the mud to keen-eyed noble sons practicing with cold steel in the training yard, all have at the very least dreamed of one day becoming a knight themselves. To ride out on errantry into the Five Duchies Kingdom and beyond for God and Glory, bringing the Law of Adam to the wicked and the Blade of Cain to the beast.

The Knights of Cantôn are sworn to follow the Code, to obey the King, to refuse no call for aid honestly asked for, to seek out and destroy the Foe wherever it may lurk and rid the world of evil.

Were it so easy…

Many years from now. Not far from home.

I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm
Your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm
Yes, many loved before us, I know that we are not new
In city and in forest they smiled like me and you
But now it's come to distances and both of us must try
Your eyes are soft with sorrow
Hey, that's no way to say goodbye

”Ah! Don’t you dare!” The innkeep’s wife interrupts the bard before he gets to the part about Wasteland girls and their riding skills. ”We’ve children present!”

”Ahem, right you are Madam.” The man responds with a cheeky grin. ”Besides, our fair knight had other things on his mind after that, I assure you.”

Turnegan, 17th Day of Savrimun, 883 A.C.E, Fair Aubrey, The Lion's Mane Inn - Present Day

Tracker Jean shrugs at your lukewarm response to her question, something about meeting some of her merchant friends and selling the last of the wine shipment. You don’t know how to act around this woman after last night and, quite frankly, you don’t think you handle it all that well. I think we unpacked that to death in the last thread so I’ll leave it there. Although things aren’t immediately awry between the two of you, it does develop that way over the course of your stay in the Capital. I’m sure we were all awkward with our first, so at least this feels like a genuine results albeit not an ideal one.

Your friend Sir Rabe appears to have somewhat recovered from his hangover, digging into a piece of mutton for lunch with a gusto that rivals that of your squire, Mikail. Sir Rabe won’t be joining you for the Vigil tonight, having already done so when he was knighted several years ago.

”First thing I did when I earnt my spurs, actually. I was knighted here when my liege was visiting the Capital.” Sir Rabe’s voice is muffled, a result of the constant influx of food. You suppose restraint at the dinner table isn’t a priority in Montbrun. ”Mmph. I had word back from that cousin of mine, the one who is going to the small tourney in northern Fallavon. Well, was.”

”Was?” You ask, though you at least pause to chew before doing so.

”Yeah, was. Damn fool fell off his damn horse two days ago, broke a leg.” It’s difficult to tell whether Sir Rabe is speaking out of sympathy or derision at a Montbrun being so easily injured. ”Anyway, I’ve already accepted my invitation but with him out they’re short a knight for the joust tally. I’m sure they can find someone, but my cousin said I can pick for him. And you’re the only one of these southern dandies I can remotely tolerate so far.”

”A place in the tournament...” It will be quite an event, no matter how humble. And a great opportunity to make a name for yourself with victories and ransoms.

”It’s a small event, barely more than a patch of even dirt and a banner or two from what I’ve heard. But it’ll make good practice for the Summer Tourney.” The Montbrun knight pauses, noting your hesitation. ”You are going to the Summer Tourney, yes? It’s the event of the decade, and in your home Duchy this year to boot!”

”I fear I won’t be here for the Summer Tourney, Karlaus.” You say with some reluctance. You know Mother would have liked to see you make an appearance, though Father seems happy with you continuing your adventures. ”I’ve been considering marking tonight’s Vigil as the beginning of my Pilgrimage which will, Almighty willing, see me heading across the sea to Cathagi.”

”Hmph. Well good luck with that. You know what they say, the Kingdom of Heaven is Cantôn not that dying slaver empire. Watch out for nets.” You knew Karlaus was perhaps not the most pious knight you’ve ever met, but you admit you’re disappointed at his dismissiveness. ”Well, that’s a some time away and this small tourney is on the way there. So, you in?”

>”I accept of course, and gladly. Just one week on the road together saw us as victors, Karlaus. Doubtless by the end of two weeks more we’ll both be heroes!” You tell Sir Rabe you have every intention of travelling with him and participating in the Tourney. [Hearty]

A Tourney! This is exactly the kind of event that you’d expect to make a name for yourself. A battlefield is a good place to carve out your Errantry legend, but in times of peace a Tourney is just as you. And nothing about the Pilgrimage forbids you from entering such feat-of-arms and other deeds of note during your travels.

”I accept of course, and gladly. Just one week on the road together saw us as victors, Karlaus. Doubtless by the end of two weeks more we’ll both be heroes!” You wonder if they have a spare spot in the melee…

”Rabe and Andrei, famous knights of the Realm!” Sir Rabe stands up, one foot on the bend and a hand hoisting a leg of mutton aloft like he’s just finished beating an army to death with it. ”Our battles shall be legendary!”

”It looks like we already have some admirers.” You chuckle as behind him a drunk stirs at the noise and cheers along, ruddy nose covered in porridge. ”I must be off to see Sir Gilbern now if I’m going to be properly prepared in time for the vigil.”

”Ah, the Reginate pretty boy. Just… look Sir Gilbern isn’t as bad as some southerner knight and he’s no slouch with that blade of his. But the man bloody reeks of politics. Just watch your step, s’all I’m saying.” Sir Montbrun shrugs dismissively, settling back into his meal. His final parting comment follows you out the door. ”And put on some proper bloody pants!”

”Ah, your new clothes. No, I wouldn’t worry about Montbrun sensibilities when it comes to fashion. Yes, I think they suit you well. Very fetching.” Sir Gilbern talks with you as you approach the place of your meeting. Why he picked a nondescript garden located directly next to the noisome blacksmith yards for a conversation is beyond you.

”I prefer the noise, if I’m honest.” Sir Gilbern replies with a cryptic smile when you ask him. ”This city has too many ears and too thin are its walls.”

”This is a measure of yours to keep our discussion discreet?” You ask, your curiosity getting the better of you.

”Indeed.” Sir Gilbern nods, pausing to observe the men across the street work the billows. ”You know of my Order Sir Andrei, and the fair beauty whom I answer to.”

”Of course, you are a member of the Order Reginae and answer to the Fair Queen.” You nod, this being no secret.

”Indeed, the stars envy her Brightness. We who serve her are righteous, powerful, respected and bestowed with the authority of the Church and Crown both.” Sir Gilbern seems to hesitate, though you think it unlikely he would ever have invited your company if he had doubts about you. ”But we are spread thin, and there are times where I must operate… independently. Alone, or with those few I trust. I had hoped you would agree to accompany me on one such task to the East of Fallavon. It will be hard riding, and we must travel in secret. No songs will be sung about our deeds, but I assure you it is for the good of the Realm.”

[3/3]

You feel somewhat awkward given you’ve just agreed to travel with Sir Rabe. You’re not sure whether you are disappointed at passing up this important mission, or relieved that you’re not getting yourself into something ”My apologies, Sir Gilbern. I’ve already told Sir Rabe that I’ll be accompanying him to the Tourney in South Fallavon.”

“Oh, don’t apologise. It sounds like a grand adventure. Well, I won’t encourage you to go against what you’ve already said you’d do. You’re an honest and upstanding man, Sir Andrei. The realm needs more knights like you.” Sir Gilbern gives a heavy sigh, though his disappointment doesn’t seem to be directed at you.”I suppose for now it will have to settle for the likes of me.”

After that you talk of little of consequence, Sir Gilbern inquires into the progress of your squire’s education and you thank him for the book on the Roiguard. He insists you keep the copy for now, there’s a dozen like it in the libraries around the Royal Palace. As you make your excuses to depart for the Vigil, Sir Gilbern stops you. By now the blacksmiths have begun packing up as the sun begins to dip.

”Emile, I wish you well on your Pilgrimage. I understand you have a letter of introduction to the Dragon Guard?”

”I do.” It was not exactly a secret, but Sir Gilbern is observant indeed to have noticed your exchange with the Cathagi Kyrios.

”I see. And I’m sure you see too.” The Queensman speaks softly. ”If hypothetically, you were ever to accept such a prestigious position, I hope you will remember the Realm. And your friends who serve it.”

--------------------------------------------------------

You are a novice at intrigue, but you do believe that Sir Robert Gilbern is asking whether you would be willing to act as a spy in the Cathagi court. Hypothetically.

I wonder what our order of priorities are...

Do our countrymen truly rank above the Crown?

I guess beyond a general sense of duty and respect to the monarchy, we haven’t really had a chance to place ourselves politically in the kingsman nationalist / feudal decentralist / queensman populist spectrum
>>
Question, regarding the AV mechanic. Does succeeding the AV DC after being hit reduce a damage point by one, or by degrees?

For example:

AV 50
Rolled 10 - that's five (four?) degrees of success. Does that mean you block five (or four) damage? Or does it only block one regardless of the roll? I couldn't find it in the (dated) combat mechanic image QM posted.
>>
Niccce.

>>3339418
Just one damage is blocked from a successful roll. Most damage multipliers require some damage to be inflicted in the first place.
>>
I was going to call a roll here but I have to admit that write-in nailed it. On top of impressing the Queensman with your lealty, making 'spying' seem like your duty rather than dishonourable skullduggery, you've also deftly avoided committing yourself to in-depth intrigue other than warning him if you hear anything that could threaten the Realm. Good show, anon (and supporters).

You are fully aware of what is being asked of you, and you response with the appropriate gravity.

"Sir I am a Knight of Cantôn first and foremost. My duty is to my family, my countrymen and the Crown. Although I am not one for politics and courtly games, should I come across anything unseemly, anything that threatens Cantôn and her peoples you shall surely hear of it and quickly."

"...I must say I'm surprised, Emile." Sir Gilbern regards you with fresh eyes. "Too many young knights these days would put their own personal honour over the good of the realm. Few would see that it is their obvious duty to do so, like you have done. I thank you, and so shall the Realm."

"For Crown and Country, my friend. Always." You clasp hands, but Sir Gilbern leaves with one last warning.

"Because I value our friendship, I will tell you this. And please, do not take it the wrong way." There is a measure of hesitation before the Order Reginate continues. His warm expression turns grim and his gaze decidedly cool. "Heed this. Should you find your brother in Fallavon, which I sincerely hope you do, tell him to stay out of my way."

"Whatever do you mean by that?" You demand, alarmed at the implications.

"I can say no more, indeed saying even that is more than I should." Sir Gilbern shakes his head. "I am sworn to secrecy. Truly, I wish it were otherwise."

Despite your demands Sir Gilbern adamantly refuses to answer your questions. Your walk back to the Lion's Mane Inn is plagued by this latest development. Your first instinct is to rush towards a pen and paper, to warn your household. But no, you will not risk what was said there in a letter to Mother and Father... not until you know more.

>REVEALED Plots within Plots: Clearly your brother is not on some aimless wandering in exile or harebrained scheme. You do not know what Damien has gotten himself caught up in but, if he has found himself at odds with the extra-judicial Order Reginae, you are for the first time genuinely fearful for his safety.

Such thoughts continue to dog you later that evening as you make your way through the dimly lit streets to the Church of Adam's Martyrdom. It looms above you like a man-made mountain, a testament to the city's faith in the Almighty and gratefulness of Adam's sacrifice during the Foe's siege and Cain's later breaking of it.

You will be standing the full Vigil and so your watch at the Reliquary, sited precisely where the breach in the old wall occurred, does not technically begin until first dawn tomorrow. However, all knight-supplicants are expected to be present the night before. You've heard that the priests and knight-brothers stationed there in fact encourage new knights to sleep until they are roused by the clergy, to better understand what those who held the line with Adam would have experienced as they too were roused violently from their rest when the wall fell.

You don't know what the old wall looked like in the age of antiquity, but as you approach the imposing cathedral doors you find yourself thinking that surely nothing short of the hand of God could breach the wall here a second time. You say as much to your squire.

Although Mikail will pay his respects at each of the pilgrimage sites, the full Vigil here is something that will have to wait until he is a knight himself should that ever come to pass.

[2/3]
>>
>>3339528

[3/3]

You are distracted from Mikail's last question. "I didn't catch that, Mikail. Speak up."

"Oh, er... why do knights stand the Vigil, m'ord?" Mikail seems somewhat intimidated by the gigantic structure and its gothic architecture. You understand how he feels, given that Castle Andrei was the largest structure either of you had ever seen. You could stack two castles just like it, keep and all, on top of one another and still not reach the peak of the Church of Adam's Martyrdom. Father doubtless had conniptions at the masonry when he came to stand his Vigil. Of course, you cannot let Mikail know an Andrei is similarly intimidated.

"Customarily new knights only have to visit the Reliquary and pay their respects at least once in their life, though many do stand the full vigil." You respond "As for why we stand the Vigil..."

"It is tradition, young squire of mine. It helps us knights remember who we are, where we come from. What we aspire to be. Most of all it reminds us of the gravity of our calling, the weight that lies upon us as protectors of the Realm." You lay your gauntlet on the boy’s shoulder as a priest greets you at the cathedral doors. The power of Man’s faithful works is made manifest in the looming hall within. ”Does that make sense to you, Mikail?”

”I… I think it does, m’lord.” The boys back straightens, at least he makes an effort not to physically slouch like most common men might be inclined to in the presence of such majesty. ”Knights have a lot to live up to, like what all the knights what came before would want. We can’t just do wotever. Wouldn’t be right.”

The use of We does not escape you. At least the boy is starting to think of himself as one day being a knight, and not just an earnest dream.

>Your squire gains the DUTIFUL trait. As a knight he will value tradition and living by a code of honour rather than faith or his personal feelings. Failing to live up to the standards of the knights that came before him is a great fear of his.

The soft chanting from the room holding the Reliquary, deep within the Cathedral walls, can be heard even here. It is said they keep a choir echoing at all hours, even on the rare occasions where there are no new knights standing Vigil. Such a duty would require an entire monastery worth of monks on a constant roster but, given the size of this place, you don't doubt it for a moment.

You suppose you shouldn’t be surprised to see Sir Marcel Rousseau here, though his new plain white and black garb of the Knights Comitas did catch you off-guard. This must be part of his penance, though from your previous conversations you assume he had served with the order once before. He seems to have been expecting you, beside him stands the Knights Comitas you met in the streets earlier.

”Brother Rousseau, well met.” You use the title preferred by their order, equality in faith being a uniting feature of the Knights Comitas as it was in the days of Adam and Cain. The veteran knight nods in return but does not speak. ”And to you as well Brother de Moray.”

”I’m afraid I did not introduce myself properly in our earlier meeting, Sir Andrei.” de Moray’s eyes twinkle with mischief. ”My Brother had spoken of you, and I wished to see your character myself without the issue of rank clouding the encounter. My full title is Chapter Master, Warden of the Aubrey Chapter House and Faith-Protector of Adam’s Rest. But please, I insist we keep it to Brother. Come.”

”I hope you did not find our meeting underwhelming.” You say, chagrined that you had spoken so casually to a man of such status. He must be the highest ranking member of Knights Comitas in the entire Aubres duchy, second only to the Grandmaster himself.

Regardless of if he's ever accepted as a Knight, a life spent acting as best he can as one wouldn't be a life wasted. Far better than a knight who acts less then as he should.

”On the contrary, it was enlightening. You showed courage, but also restraint. A rare combination in young men these days, knights especially.” You wonder what he means by ‘courage’ in stopping some petty bullying, but you say nothing as your group enters a side alcove of the hall.”It was part of Brother Rousseau’s request. As you may have noticed, he has taken a vow of silence. But he also pleaded that he be allowed to escort you through any Pilgrimages you may undertake, which he was certain a man of your faith would. His request is granted, should you wish to him.”

”I… well, of course.” You halt and turn to Brother Rousseau, clasping forearms. ”It would be an honour to have you.”

”May the Almighty smile upon it!” Brother de Moray smiles, clasping his hands together. ”And, speaking of pilgrims, there is a group of faithful gathering this Sendag after mass. They mean to make their way to Motte-Fallavon for the Twin Sister ceremony there.”

”They number twenty good souls, all told. As you know, escorting those of the Faith along the roads is the reason our order exists.” You nod as the Chapter Master continues. ”We have assigned two of our Brothers to help guide and watch them, Salve Reginae have mercy but I can spare no more. I fear it may not be enough.”

”You wish for my aid?” You say, not without hesitation. Escorting pilgrims puts further requirements on your duties during the journey, you won’t be able to ride off without at least informing the other Knights Comitas. The night of Twin Sisters is still some way off, so you’ll probably be able to still attend the Tourney and search for your bother if you make haste after your arrival. There’s also the matter of whether Sir Rabe would want to be saddled with this as well.

”If you would offer it. Some will return to their homes after Fallavon, but others will press on to the shores of Pascae for the Cain Tide. Few will be able to afford the voyage across to Cathagi for the Long Walk, the most dangerous leg of the journey.” The grizzled holy knight pauses, growling. ”Hmm. I sound too much like a salesman peddling goods. It is a good deed should you agree to help, but of course I cannot compel anyone not of our order.”

You agree to escort the pilgrims, you will have to convince Sir Rabe it is worth the hassle. [Haughty]

>”I have already made arrangements, but I will see whether my companions can be won over to include this task in our journey. You will try to convince Sir Rabe to accept, a dim prospect given his… indifference to the faith. If he refuses then you shall have to decline as well. [Hearty]

The roads of Man may wind and wither, but the God-sighted never lose their way. What is the whims of Sir Rabe to this most holy of ventures? Can the potential political gains from attending tourneys and gaining audiences before nobles outweigh that of service to God?

Remember, brothers, that a knight is sworn to valour. His might upholds the weak, and his blade defends the helpless.

I mean if its a slight detour, it shouldnt be too much trouble.
>>
>>3342436

I do not break our already given word with impunity. Yet I consider the chiefest of concerns to be that of God, so much so that such a damage to our reputation is worth accepting. Tell me, brother - what worth is a man's pride and honour to the smallest of services to God?

When the Mother of All, Salvae Regina defied the laws and customs of the land of the Dragon, did she not in the eyes of the nobles and peasants of Cathago dishonour herself? Yet she persisted, defying conventions, by refusing to hand over her children - and from the twin seeds of her protected fruits was bought our nation and our freedom.

The Mother sacrificed Her all so that we may -live-, unsullied by the chains like the Cathagi. Knights are often called to embody an aspect of Cain or Adam, but let us, too, remember the Origin of the Twins. Our given word is as ash when compared to service to the Faith.

What indeed is man's pride and honour, but the very values that The Regina sacrificed for?

For us to be slaves, bound to her will and whim?

Or for us to stand proudly beside her, not behind her skirts.

What raises the value of these men above sir Rabe, whom we've already sworn to? Numbers alone? Or do we only sacrifice for those who hold the Regina closer in their hearts, in mockery of her sacrifice for all?

How presumptive to expect what was freely given to require repayment. To lay down new chains after being freed from the old.

We *chose* to give our world, and we must stand by that choice. Not duck our responsibility by kneeling before one who wished us to stand tall, and yes to stand with pride.

Did not the Regina dishonor herself in the eyes of others, but keep true to herself? Do you think she would approve of casting aside our previous decision for the desire of approval from another?

If you truly believe that our oath as a Knight behooves us prioritizing protecting pilgrims, then we also have a duty to remind Sir Rabe that this is an act not just of faith but also duty, shared by him as a Knight as well. And if he then refuses, we must accept that it is also our duty to chastise him. Same as we did with the Knight whom by his actions brought harm, we must judge those who allow harm through their inaction. Even if they are considered friends or allies.

Must we not also reconsider our previous decision to attend the tourney rather then aid the realm? A deed which could potentially save even more than these pilgrims.

But remember, other knights have already taken up this burden. Sacrifice for the sake of sacrifice is merely hubris, not honour. Mayhaps we could trust in their strength.

Kniggas gotta stay together. Shitty, considering there will only be 2 Comitas with the pilgrims, but we've got enough on our plate for the road to Fallavon if we can't persuade Karlaus to do it. We might lose a few points with Marcel, but I'd rather stick with the knigga who helped us with the beastmen and Vancewell so far.

It's worth at least trying to persuade Rabe. It'll be tough but ultimately we agreed to ride with him. Also we could pickup with the pilgrims that want to continue to Pascae later.

Could we offer a compromise? Like if the two knights escort the group to Motte-fallavon and then we pick them up from there and take the ones that want to go to Pascae while the brothers go back with those returning home.

”Of course, naturally. It is a duty of any knight to defend the faith.” It is a great deed to make the full Pilgrimage, how much greater still then to shield the defenceless men of faith from harm along the way? It is the very definition of knightly behaviour, a status you aspire to. And if Sir Rabe sees such a task as beneath him well, you shall convince him otherwise. ”Any danger that threatens these humble pilgrims on the road will find me instead.”

Brother de Moray is well pleased with your answer, and he takes no issue with your explanation that you will occasionally be about your own business when required. He will not turn down aid to the pilgrim’s safety no matter the form it takes. He says that his two knights will accompany you as far as Motte-Fallavon, and then the Chapter House there should provide a more sufficient escort for the trip to Pascae.

”Please, this way Sir Knight.” A clergyman gestures to the next door. ”Your squire may wait here after paying his respects, or return to your quarters. You however, should join your fellow aspirant knights for the night. You will need a clear head for the Vigil before first light.”

Fenegan, 18th Day of Savrimun, 883 A.C.E, Fair Aubrey, The Lion's Mane Inn - Present Day, First Light

"To arms, to arms. The Foe is at the walls.” You awake to the hushed whisper and shake on your shoulder. In your waking moments you almost forget that speaker is a priest, not a guard, and the words are a ceremonial awakening and not an earnest clarion call.

”To arms, to arms. The Foe is at the walls.” Around you the scene is repeated several times, three other young knights are similarly wakened by a huddle of priests.

You and your fellow knights remain silent as you rise stiffly, having slept in your armour. Over 800 years ago, at this very spot, men not unlike yourself had repelled assault after assault from the walls of Aubrey. Attacks could occur at any moment, if not from the massed armies then from the sky or unnatural fiends clambering the walls as if it were a ladder. Moments of respite were few and far between, and rarely wasted on the dangerous luxury of changing out of one’s armour. Your column approached the Reliquary, half-a-dozen softly humming monks hold candles on either side of you.

”The beasts have breached the walls.” A priest to your left intones in a singer’s voice.

”All is lost. We are doomed.” Another from behind you speaks in a deeper baritone.

”Forsake your vows. Flee for your lives.” One cries from the front. As he does so your column halts

”Is the courage of Man so frail? Do your backs still flinch from your master’s whips? Not all flee, one still stands. And one is all it takes.” Chapter Master Gilles de Moray bars the way through, his face grim. His armour and white garment seem to gleam in the candlelight. His hand thrusts open the door to where you shall stand the Vigil. ”Witness. And rejoice.”

The Vigil theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uj8h4SCsnE

The full choir probably wakes every morning to sing this hymn at the changing of the Vigil, it must be a routine for them. The effect on you is not lessened by this fact one bit, your eyes locked on the stone sarcophagus at the centre of the dias. You breathe deep, steadying yourself. This is a Holy Place.

As the first ray of light escapes over the morning sky, kissing the Reliquary through priceless tinted glass, you and your fellows are led into the room. Four knights replace the Three standing Vigil, these men rising stiffly from their kneeling. One has to be assisted by a clergyman, his leg locking up.

You take your assigned spot and kneel in obeisance. Your Vigil begins. If the monks swap out singers gradually or somehow sing for hours on end without break, you don’t notice. You are lost deep in contemplation. You find yourself most affected by…

Men weep that he never finished setting the Realm’s foundation, that your society is flawed compared to the Kingdom of Heaven Adam had envisioned. I feel like the Cain option is more appropriate to someone who has lost family or friends to the Foe while the Salve Reginae just seems a tad too whistful.

I rather like the idea of our character growing more somber and mature as he looks at things outside his home-canton. We already met a duplicitous knight who raped and killed the very people of the realm his kind are sworn to protect, and then had an eye-opening moment when we met some Cathagi - an international experience - as we realised they aren't the kind of baby-eating monsters we might have grown up hearing stories about.

That, and also the fact that I find the Mother most interesting. She is the representation of the Almighty, but other than that we know almost nothing about her. Not even her name.

I like this as it touches on both Salve Regine and Adam. Honestly I would be happy if this or the hearty option won, but think it would be interesting if we had some sort of fusion (if possible). What kind of Canton would we have had today if Adam had lived....but the realm would not be if he had not made his noble sacrifice...

Venerate the Brother who died holding the line, here in the Breach He held the Foe from. There is reverence for Salve Reginae and the Brother who beat the Foe back, but that is best shown elsewhere. Here, in this place and at this time, it is right to stand for Adam.

Est Adam Gloria

I have a family birthday event to attend to today so we won’t see another update other than this roll. To keep some voter engagement we’ll include a purely cosmetic vote, nothing to do with your vigil or anything else. As a purebred Romani from an old (but weakened) family, you have the dark hair and pale complexion like many of your Duchy. It has been nearly a month since you left Castle Andrei and, in that time,…

>You have made the Pilgrimage to 1/4 Holy Sites
+1 Step on the Path of Adam [9]

As the sun climbs high, shining through the windows of the Church of Adam’s Martyrdom, the air seems to glisten as the light rests on the Reliquary. It is a simple stone slab, unadorned and plain in stark comparison to the wealth and majesty that was built around it.

Before long your legs are sore, your back aches and your neck twinges with each passing minute. But the weakness of the body is temporary, fleeting. Good fortune that you relieved yourself before the vigil began. You pay the pain no heed, lost deep in reflection and worship. Adam fought on even as his skin was torn from his flesh, his limbs ripped from their sockets. The least you can do is pay your respects without complaint, contemplating how the man how edified what it means to be a knight.

Over 800 years ago at this very spot, he gave his life for the Realm. They say by the end he was blinded by wyvern-fire, his flesh had melted under the heat of his scorched armour. And still he fought on. Even after a Basilisk had feasted on his arm and a horde of beastfolk severed his foot. Somehow he killed the next Foe, and the next. A dozen and a dozen more, again and again throughout the long day and longer night. You barely notice the moon tonight, a lone Full Sister peeking through the stained glass. Hours have passed like minutes to you, lost in thought. If any of your fellow knights shuffled or moved in their time you have not noticed.

At times Adam fought alone, and at times other brave souls stood with him. You suppose their sacrifice is no less, but without the magical protection of the Magi Armour they stood no chance against the monsters arrayed before them. Montbrun the Giant, White-Eye Aubres and Pascae Silverhand. You know all their names, men that had fought at Motte-Fallavon and lived to tell the tale died by the dozen alongside their leader. Champions all, the breach claimed them and hundreds of others.

As the night enters its darkest hour just before the dawn, you feel a serene calmness. You cannot describe it if you tried, but a sense of rightness and peace washes over you in a way that you have never once experienced in your life. That the fate of the Realm could spin on the efforts of one man, for one night, and emerge unbroken speaks to the truth that the Almighty smiles upon this land. A righteous man is never truly alone, but the Almighty moves here in this sacred place so tangibly you can almost reach out and touch it.

The first hint of a lighting sky signals the morning has come, and your Vigil is fulfilled. In the eyes of Man and God, you are an anointed knight.

[1/2]

[2/2]

”You have stood the Vigil for our fallen Brother, and stood it well.” A Knights Comitas speaks as the choir continues unbroken, clearly a senior member. ”If you would swear a vow, as you are baptised in your knighthood and mandate, step forward.”

A red-haired knight of the green and white of Fallavon steps forward, a minor scion of the Duke’s family if you were to guess.

”Know me. I am Sir Isaac Motte-Fallavon, son of Sir Bertrand Motte-Fallavon.” He plants his sword in the stone at the very base of the tomb. ”Hear me. I shall win the favour of the fair maiden Lady Denshire. Mark me. Upon my honour, I so swear it.”

”Know me. I am Sir Hans Kroger, son of Lord Karl Kroger.” This black-bearded knight wears blue and black, a griffin emblazoned on his tabard. ”Hear me. I shall avenge myself on the snakemen who murdered my brother, and bring two-score heads of their ilk to my father’s table. Mark me. May my right eye and left hand be struck from my body should I fail.”

The third knight, a plain adorned man with no heraldry markings, remains in place.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(1) Do you swear a vow?
>No, you remain silent.
>”Know me. I am Sir Emile Andrei, son of Lord Nikolai Andrei. Hear me…”

(2) What do you vow to do?
Given the significance, I will leave the exact phrasing to you.

A vow sworn at the end of your Vigil is considered to hold particular gravitas. There is no shame in not swearing a vow, you have stood the Vigil proud like any other knight. If making a vow or vows, be mindful that conditions that excuse failure are viewed dimly. This is a vow to achieve a worthy feat after all, not a business contract.

The custom of physical punishment in lieu of lost honour is generally a Montbrun tradition like their Stone Oaths (and very old), but you are not excluded from invoking it. In other Duchies, a period of service with a holy order is usually sufficient to regain lost honour for all but the most egregious of broken vows.

Do we have anything to really vow to at the moment? We're still not sure of the situation with our brother and the other major long-term goal is the Dragon Guard unless I'm forgetting something major.

Unless we swear we will see through Mikhail becoming a knight so we feel even worse when he dies

Protecting the pilgrims, winning the tourney and ensuring your brothers safe return are all worthy vows but not taking a vow is also completely fine. It is born something done lightly, the consequences of failure being severe. For example, if you failed to protect the pilgrims adequately that would suck but you would not bring yourself dishonour (unless you acted dishonourably and neglected your duties somehow).

>>
>>3349301
I need to point out the flaw in your vow. There is nothing to achieve. It's open-ended. You can never say you fulfilled this vow except with your last breath. Like the QM said
>This is a vow to achieve a worthy feat

I'm not bashing your thoughts on chastity and such, it's just not appropriate in this context.
>>
>>3349591
Same with this one. Nothing wrong with the ideals but there is no end point that we can say that we achieved this.
>>
>>3349625
So you're saying there has to be a mechanical benefit on display for everything?

That's a shit way of going about a character driven story
>>
>>3349619
You achieve a sense of accomplishment. It's a testament to self-control and sacrifice. It ends when you have a wife and children. The context though I would take in mind.

>>3349527
The act of sleeping with her put us in that position in the first place, so ergo, yes, sleeping with Tracker Jean was a mistake.
>While Gilles de Moray introduces himself the other two knights only nod at your introduction. An act which you find to be a little rude until you remember that many members of the Knights Comitas take vows of silence, chastity and poverty.
It's not stupid, it has precedent as an actual vow Knights take.

>>3349554
You get a buff with vows.
>>
>>3349631
I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying it has to be something we can actually achieve in the context of the story.
QM examples
>Win tourney
>bring brother home safely
>Protect pilgrims
>Win a lady's hand (from other knights)
>Kill x amount of snakemen and avenge family (also other knight)
Player suggestions
>get Mikhail knighted

These are all appropriate under the QM's guidelines
>>
>>3349637
The act of sleeping with her secured us valuable contacts and trade. The act of being wish-washy after the fact and not owning our actions is what caused us trouble and lost what we had gained.

Note that the Knight Comitas is specifically a religious order. Whilst Emile obviously takes his religion more seriously than some, it isn't as if we are so puritanical that we're about to join them ourselves. We respect them, but we are not them.

I don't see a vow of chastity really making sense in character right now, especially given our recent casual sex. Unless of course it is done out of shame which seems like a bit of an overreaction
>>
>>3349637
>You get a buff with vows.
I think you are confused. This isn't an occasion where we pick a buff with an ideal to uphold

Do you?
>>
>>3349647
Well, considering he was a virgin before this, slept with a woman, and saw the consequences of his actions, it would be entirely appropriate for this a serious, dutiful, faithful servant of the religious order to realize, "Hey, maybe sleeping with random women isn't the smartest thing to do".

>>3349650
Yes, but did you expect a contract with after sleeping with Jean? No, because it could have played out any numbers of ways. What I'm saying is, Forgotten has a tendency to either reward or make you pay for your decisions.
>>
>>3349645
We can literally achieve protecting the weak its shit we've done before
>>
>>3349654
What's more worthy than to not give in to the cardinal pleasures of the flesh?
>>
>>3349669
So you protect the weak once and consider your vow fulfilled? All I'm saying is it has to be more specific like protecting the pilgrims on their journey. It has a definitive end
>>
>>3349668
That is such an over reaction. Perhaps his response would be "looks like I am shit at dealing with women, maybe I should work on that to improve myself and my worth to my family" or "maybe I should only sleep with women I can stand to have associated with me" or "if I sleep with a women, perhaps I should avoid insulting her the next day by asking her to act like it never happened" rather than "Oh no, sex is bad, I better never do it again!"

So many choices
>>
>>3349677
I was never arguing the ideals. It's the structure of the vow. How long are you planning on being a player here? Don't have it be open-ended
>>
>>3349678
No it's an ongoing commitment without foreseeable end, vows do not have to specific that's an err on your part, forgotten has explicitly given us vows to choose from that aren't a simply A to B journey.
>>
>>3348785
>No, you remain silent.
>>
I think there is some confusion between the Code (which regulates knightly behaviour such as defending the weak and not being unfaithful etc) and a vow is usually a bit more specific and proactive.

You're expected to adhere to the code anyway, but
>I will protect the weak
Vs
>I will protect THESE specific people in particular (the pilgrims)

Now that's not to say you cannot make such a general vow, of course you can. And I will happily award a Code point for the relevant vow now instead of one upon completion of a vow focussed on an objective. Be mindful though, to fail a vow while falling short of the Code that vow aligns with is going to have severe repercussions.

>TL;DR I'd prefer an objective-based vow but no vow or a vow regulation behaviour is fine too.
>>
>>3349689
You mean like this?
>Knight's Code
(1) "His Blade Defends the Helpless"

We are not picking one of these.

What are you on about? The listed example, specifically from Forgotten are all pretty clearly things with a beginning and an end. This is a direct quote:

>Protecting the pilgrims, winning the tourney and ensuring your brothers safe return are all worthy vows
>>
For example, a open-ended vow along the lines of upholding a Code would go something like "I swear to be an example to all knights in X". Once you are recognised as someone edifying that Code, we could consider it fulfilled.
>>
>>3349698
Yes but as forgotten points out here >>3349695 the vow is just as valid as any other

Don't be dicks. The part of the journey to make this vow is the only reason I stuck it out for so long. I'm going to keep playing, but this has been a priority 1 for me from the beginning. It's part of the reason why I didn't want to sleep with Jean in the first place.

Then.

That makes me want to vote against it even more.

I'll personally keep playing even if the vow of chastity wins, but people like you that "threaten" to quit when things don't go their way, or vote against things like sleeping with Jran because "muh chastity" even before we took an oath I feel we're better off without.

It's a shared game, get used to the idea of playing someone different than you originally envisioned.

I wanted to not kill all the Beastmen, and to not get closer to slaver scum Cathari. Also to get a Wild Mustang from Jean.

Well that shit ain't happening, but I'm not gonna be a fag about it and constantly try to undercut shit to force Andre to do those things.

Looks like we're gonna go protect the Dragon for a tour in his guard, then come back and go full Nazi on the Beastmen. Maybe not.
>>
>>3350006
Mate I'm not being a dick, I'm voting for what I want and what I think is the correct choice. I don't give a fuck if you have only been playing to vote for a chastity vow. And honestly if you've "only been sticking around" for that one vote then you can fuck off because it seems like you aren't interested in the story itself. Personally I think that's ridiculous and as this is a cooperative game I'll cast my vote as I please.

If what I voted for wins, that's great. If it loses, so be it. I'm enjoying the game, the world and the cast so I'll continue either way, but I wont bow to your demands simply because it has been your "priority 1 for me from the beginning" or "only reason I stuck it out for so long". That's some bullshit

Congratulations of the lack of reading comprehension. I literally took a direct quote from Forgotten and you are telling me I am twisting his words. Let me link it for you. Right here mate:
>>3349401
>Protecting the pilgrims, winning the tourney and ensuring your brothers safe return are all worthy vows but not taking a vow is also completely fine

As for what you quoted, Forgotten literally just explained that we aren't voting on a Knightly Code (which is what you've provided an example of) but a vow. Again, right here:
>>3349695
> a vow is usually a bit more specific and proactive
>You're expected to adhere to the code anyway

Knightly Codes are more open ended as far as achieving them goes. Like what you've provided as an example, we would be expected to provide quarter to a defenseless opponent each time it occurs throughout our life.

Vows are, again, usually more specific as shown in the link above... explained by Forgotten himself.

>>3350033
Make don't be so personally offended by the fact that some of us don't want to be a Chaste Knight. Acting like we're voting for it to spite you and ruin your fun is ridiculous. I don't agree with your vote, and I don't want it to win but I sincerely doubt you're voting for it to fuck me over. We just have different ideas of what is fun.
>>
>>3350023
>That is such an over reaction.
>"Oh no, sex is bad, I better never do it again!"

See, that bullcrap up there that you posted, that's being a dick. And who's to say that's not what I'm doing as well? I can't enjoy a story and want a vote cast a certain way? What, your preferences take precedence over mine? Get a train ran on you.
>>
>>3350039
Of course my preference doesn't take precedence, did you not read what I wrote?

>If what I voted for wins, that's great. If it loses, so be it
>I can't enjoy a story and want a vote cast a certain way?

Stop being such a salt lord. Cast your vote as you please mate, I've said it already. And calling something an overreaction isn't being a dick. Although yeah in that particular post I was being a dick, fair call
>>
>>3350035
What's more to say then the vote of chastity is a choice to make? Making no choices is the most boring decision you can make in a game or in life. If you want to play or have a safe, middle-of-the-road, do nothing life, go die. Or heck, just have Forgotten write out his entire quest from his perspective the way he wants, since some people don't actually care about the votes. That's not being facetious, that's not being edgy, that's being truthful. Life is too short to not make a decision. It's sickening seeing the blandness, the mediocrity being set as some sort of ideal to strive for, to live up to. It's insanity.
This is an anonymous image board, on a Knight's Quest, at his pilgrimage, trying to find his brother, going to a tourney, asked to be a spy, who just slept with a woman for the first time, taking in the grandness of the savior of his people, his nation, way of life, his very existence, and he feels nothing? No worthy goals to strive for, no cause to rise to, no fight worth fighting?
Pathetic. All of you. Might as well just be a woman and be done with it.

Because I was literally criticizing you for taking it personally if people didn't vote "your way".

Andre has no reason to want to be chaste right now. You just have a boner for it.

I personally didn't have a huge boner for those other things, and instead of thinking "oh no this ruins things" instead I plan on making being that way fun.

You should try that instead.

>No vow I know there was some calls for a recast but not enough. You seem to have enough on your plate anyway

You and the other plain-armoured knight do not speak. You intend to uphold your word, and need no vow to compel you. Father warned you against making a vow lightly or to impress upon others that you are serious. He taught you that a vow should only be sworn when the speaker would vow it whether or not anyone heard them say the words.

”So be it.” The Knights Comitas signals you each to rise as Brother de Moray leads in two new knights to replace this vigil of four. ”Arise as knights, anointed by God and Man.”

Brother de Moray meets you outside the hallowed hall, once the ceremony is complete. He tells you that at times, especially in the clutches of winter when few travel the roads, there are no uninitiated knights and the Vigil is left to the experienced Knights Comitas. He reminds you that this Sendag he will introduce you to his subordinates and the group of pilgrims, leaving you only a few days to make any further preperations before departing.

Brother de Moray is dismayed at your lack of philosophical readings and finds the excuse of your sisters being given the attention of the more esoteric tutors to be a poor excuse. Despite your protestations you find yourself the proud new honour of a copy of The Pilgrim's Progress by Brother Bunyan. A recent work of fiction that describes the life of a pilgrim visiting all four Holy sites and being tested by monsters, foreigners and his own weak faith at each step. de Moray stresses that it is a good read with sound metaphors but should not be relied upon as an actually traveller's guide.

Although you spend only a few minutes in conversation with the Chapter Master, the tiredness of an entire knight spent awake quickly makes itself aware.

"MAKE WAY FOR THE KING." The booming voice of an armoured man in red and gold echoes from outside and interrupts your conversation.

You half-turn with some surprise, wondering what King's business the Roiguard would have in the Church of Adam's Martyrdom. Then you realise what the Kingsman just said. Not make way in the name of the King, not make way for the Kingsmen, they said make way For the King.

As the cathedral doors swing wide open you glimpse a figure swathed in red and gold before yourself to a kneel so swiftly that the slam of knee-plate into the stone floor is audible and your tired muscles scream in objection. You find yourself short of breath and quick of pulse, wide eyes staring in disbelief at the tiles. The King himself[b/] is in the same room as you. And judging from the amount of attendants, Order Reginate and other announcements you overhear it seems he's brought the entire Royal Family as well and then some. And Mikail is still standing there bloody gawping at him like a village idiot.

Idiot boy! you nearly fume, though thanks be to God he gets over his shock and is at least not the last in the room to kneel in the presence of the King. You would have been mortified if you had to drag him down to kneel beside you, but he's saved himself a beating this time at least.

Through the hustle and bustle of the procession making it's way down the main Cathedral hall you keep your head low and see little. However, one of the Royal Family passes close by. Close enough to reach out and touch perhaps if you were fool enough to want half-a-dozen blades spitting you for the attempt.

You chance a glance up and see...

----------------------------------------------

>The King himself. Father of the Kingdom of Heaven and Lord-Protector of the Realm. The most powerful man on the continent, perhaps the world, his Roiguard number in the hundreds and from the looks of things most of them are right here watching over him. [Hearty]

>The Queen herself. Mother of the Faith and Majesty of Truth and Love. Although a mere handful of knights wearing the Order Reginae colours flank her, you suspect that they are only the most obvious of her devoted followers. [Idealist]

>The Crown-Prince. There are nearly as many guards following the King as there are eager, well-dressed young men following the Prince. As the heir to the Throne, he shall one day take his Father's place. [Haughty]

>The Royal Princess. With the King's brother childless and twice-widowed, marriage to her would come with the Duchy of Aubres. That alone makes her the most eligible bachelorette in the Kingdom, even if she were not such a stunning beauty. [Haughty]

In his excitement to meet the King, Emile rushes in for a hug.

>rolled a 1

However due to nerves, Emille had at some point pulled out his dagger to fiddle with it. The Roigaurd see him rushing at the king, knife in hand and promptly cut him down in a bloody display. Mikail, confused, shocked and outraged at seeing his master and teacher so savagely killed by the men he has looked up to all his life, draws his sword and charges them.

News spreads across the land of the attempted assassination of the King, and House Andrei is further plunged into darkness and shame; exiled for all time on pain of death.

Also 4chan has been blocked in Australia for the past couple of hours because our telcos think they can decide what websites we visit. Seems they've unblocked it for the time being though. Pretty sure Forgotten is an Aussie so this may be an issue if he doesn't have a vpn set up.

Yeah it's outrageous, they claim they are "doing the right thing" by blocking websites in which the Christchurch shooters video is being reuploaded. Anyway, it's just about 10am Australian Eastern Standard and I am able to access 4chan without a proxy so it seems alright now.

so nice of the guardian angels to save you. hopefully they don't crack down on 4chan too much in the future, i'd hate for forgotten's playerbase to get displaced/scattered or for him to stop questing entirely

It seems ok at the moment, thank god, and small ISPs haven't blocked access. Granted these are the same small ISPs who don't block pirate bay etc. because the courts really don't care all too much.

Welcome to China, boys.

Yeah from what I've seen and heard it's mostly Telstra/Optus and their subsidiaries

I'm an ausfag as well. Can't find a solution except for changing ISPs, right now I think it's Telstra, Optus and Vodafone that have fucked us. You can access the site through VPNs but you can't actually post through them.

He might be able to post if he does the DNS trick but I don't know it personally.

Changing my DNS to googles is what I've done as well being an Ausfag myself. I've also posted it to his twitter so hopefully he'll be back soon. If you have windows 10 this method will work but give it a few hours to propagate:
