So I have two cans of rockstar and have to call that job back tomorrow! sounds like a good place to start, right? I may take a short break to grill up another couple burgers real quick, I haven't had anything to eat other than 2 frozen hamburgers since... sometime yesterday? I think? Haha, I'm healthy!

There's an archive here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=Strike%20Witches%202016 And thank you to who ever started doing that for me. I did it all through 89, but you guys have much better titles, haha! To anyone checking it out, you really only need to worry about the reboot threads- the older run was a mess, to say the least. we won't go into why, we can just call it a failing on my part and leave it there.

Anyway, I won't bore you anymore! haha!

========================================================================================================

The guests- such as they were, being almost entirely your sisters, along with your father and Danielle- showed up a little early. You’d figured they were going to drag him back here- and to be fair, you’d planned to give him a call anyway. Your Aunt managed to finish the coffee you’d made- and had cracked open one of those monsters in the fridge before you could make another pot. Anastasia and Cassie had both gone for them as well- Danielle, for her part, just asked for a coffee.

You’ve had company on and off in the kitchen the whole time- mostly Cassie and Auntie M, but everyone’s been in and out at least once. Currently, Anastasia is sitting at the island, which has become the unofficial ‘limit’ of how close people can come to the stovetop and counter you’re using for prep.

“Danielle seems pretty chill.” She offers. “And her record’s pretty good. I know a couple girls that flew off the same deck as her in eleven, said she’s solid and professional, if maybe a bit distant.”

“Distant?” You ask, only half distracted- the chili is relatively low maintenance at this point, just an occasional stir, but there’s a couple other things going on- you need to crack and fry a dozen eggs, and there’s two french loaves to break, though you’re thinking of leaving them whole. It may be a bit old-fashioned, but you put stock in breaking bread among friends and family.

She nods. “It’s pretty common with witches like her though. They tend to operate alone or in pairs at most, and go in before anything big. Rumors say they’re thinking about doing them like they do the wyvern fleet and just farming them out as needed to decks for short rotations, independent of squadron work.”

[x] How many witches are there like her in the fleet?

“So how many witches are there like her in the fleet?” You ask, pulling the lid off the pot to stir it some. You dearly wish you had your good wooden spoon, but the store-bought one you just pulled out of the packaging and washed before you started here will have to do.

Anastasia frowns. “Not many, I think. She’s not unique, but there’s not a lot of sensor killers like her, maybe four or five. I mean, that’s enough for just about every witch squadron to have one, but it’s still pretty valuable for the fleet.”

You nod. “Especially with the new A2/AD air defense doctrine the Chinese and Reds have.” You point out.

“Especially with that, yeah.” She agrees. “Dad and aunt Merlin don’t really get how much SAM and antiaircraft gun tech has evolved since the war, especially on the Russian side. Even one of their newest S-400 systems is cheaper than a good fourth gen fighter, and it’s a hell of a lot more dangerous to us. And that’s not counting shit like their griffon railgun or whatever the hell they’re calling it this week.”

“Electromagnetic launcher” you say- you just saw an article on it not too long ago.

She nods. “Yeah, that. Shit’s scary, and girls like Danielle are really the only hard counter we have to it. I agree with the navy on this one- pull them back to a single reserve pool and farm them out where needed to punch holes in air defense networks so the rest of us can do the job.”

“So what do you think will happen if I don’t end up selecting her as my girl in back?”

Anastasia shrugs. “She won’t get to cool her heels long, that’s for damn sure. Either strikers or Aunt Merlin may try to steal her. Given her record and talents, she’s almost perfect for what auntie M is proposing, and the navy would be happy to transfer her if she agreed.”

[] Which project? Aunt M has like a dozen spinning.

>>3345896
Probably because of the potential of a Wyvern witch with her specialty. She did rate the program, and if I recall . And I find it interesting that she's 'distant' to other witches. That seems averse to being involved in politicking.

As for why specifically not any other Wyvern team... that IS a good question, if that's what's actually meant.
>>
Are we still arguing about whether or not the first one is a matron plant? Could we just get to the next one already, since it may not even matter if we really like/hate the rest.
>>
>>3345976
New information came out about Danielle and the rarity of her talents and their usefulness/necessity to the Navy air arm as a whole. Apparently her talents are valuable enough for the Navy to be considering pulling all the girls with her talents back to a condensed unit and farming them out to other units as necessary. Which begs the question.....why is she here, with us, being allowed to go for a Wyvern posting?
>>

[x] Which project? Aunt M has like a dozen spinning.

“Which project?” You ask, tasting the spoon and frowning- another couple minutes before you take it off the heat, you think. Just about time to get going on the little bit of garlic bread you plan to make. “Aunt M has like a dozen spinning.”

“You know.” Ana leans in conspiratorially. “Valkyrie.”

“Her plugged strikers?” You ask. You’ve heard the name, but never from your aunt, which is unusual- typically she’s more than happy to talk to you about whatever she’s working on.

Ana looks back over her shoulder at the door to the living room, where everyone else is sitting, chatting away. “Yeah. I’ve heard rumors she’s got prototypes built and is just looking for candidates. Say what you want about her not being able to people for shit, Auntie M is a genius for the technology side of war. She’s probably working three steps ahead of anything anyone else is doing.”

You shake your head. “If she’s got them, they’re in dreamland if they’re anywhere.”

Ana shrugs. “And? what, you think auntie M isn’t there every few months anyway? why do you think she keeps that reserve commission?”

“And you think she’d pick Danielle?”

Ana nods. “It’s the next best thing to putting her in a wyvern. Rumor already is our aunt is going to use your fighter as a flying combat test if and when this thing goes hot. And if you end up with someone else, Danielle in some superstriker sounds exactly like what the navy would need to bust the air defense net the Chinese have supposedly built.”

“Well, what about another wyvern?”

Ana laughs. “They’d have to move fast. You know Merlin. Once she tells the navy something or someone is important to her work, they’ll break their spine bending over backwards to her what she’s after.”

“What about Danielle? If those strikers are plugged is she gonna want to drive them?”

Ana shrugs. “Don’t know here enough to say, but think about it. She’s already agreed to getting plugs in theory anyway, depending on your choices with her. And even if she’s dicey on it, c’mon. Any witch in the fleet would kill for a chance to be one of auntie M’s girls, even if it means disappearing into dreamland.”

[x] Ok, but why her? She’s in reserve, right? There’s got to be better with fleet.

“Ok, but why her? She’s in reserve, right?” You ask. “There’s got to be better with fleet.”

Ana shakes her head. “I forget how green you are sometimes. Rotations like this are normal. Danielle’s just getting sent somewhere else in the fleet.”

“So she’s not out of squadron service?”

“Nah. She’s just getting rotated, like me or Cass. Helps keep our skills rounded, you learn different things with different squadrons and on different ships. We get a chance to work with a lot of different people with a lot of different skills, and it keeps us sharper as a result. Besides, if they are going to withdraw SEAD witches like her, it makes sense to have them already out of squadrons before trying to organize it, so you can keep those squadrons at establishment strength, especially in the pacific.”

“She’s not here just because of the covens?”

That gets you a flat stare- then Ana grins and laughs. “Really? You think the navy would let the matroncy pick girls they wanted to you use like brood mares and let them slap them in the most hot shit piece of equipment they own to boot? Morgan, please. You’re paranoid. A wyvern alone costs over a bill, there’s no way they’re just going to let those creepy old bitches that run the books use one to have you pop out superbabies or whatever. Get a grip.”

You shrug- it’s easy for her to brush off, but it’s your experience that it’s happened before- at least, kind of. You met an awful lot of nice young girls out of high school and in the academy who just so happened to be witches in with some matron or protege of another.

“Besides, even if that’s what the matroncy did, It’s not like Danielle’s a favorite or anything. Rumor has it the navy shot down most of the coven picks, and the way the wyvern deal is worded, the coven had to accept it. And supposedly none of the coven picks made your short list anyway.”

“Not even that Japanese princess? Kyou?”

Ana laughs again. “Especially not her, are you kidding? Holy shit the matrons would flip shit if she ended up in the wyvern, and the admirals and state department would trollface all the way to the bank. She’s an imperial princess, they can’t touch her. According to aunts Kat and Jess, the Japanese coven can’t do a damn thing to her either.”

“And Earhart? Her grandmom was a matron, right?”

“Sure, and her mom blew their good name all to hell in the sixties.” Ana scoffs. “Listen, I know your mom beat it into your head that getting in your pants is priority one for anyone with a familiar, but there’s other things going on. You need to remember you’re a naval aviator first, and that if it comes to it, the navy’s going to expect you to shine.”

[x] What do you know about the witches on the short list anyway?

The garlic bread, not normally a side you’d serve with the chili, is another of Merlin’s favorites. You know your sisters- especially Ana- are going to give you hell over it, but it is what it is, you figure. Plus, you do kind of enjoy spoiling your aunt, though the perfect chocolate cake still eludes you. You get started on it while talking, not minding that Ana’s going to see how you make it. It’s not like this recipe is a particular secret either.

“What do you know about the witches on the short list, anyway?” You ask.

Ana grins and shakes her head. “Fishing for information? You’re kind of bad at that.”

“I’m better at avoiding traps.” You point out. “Just cos I was raised in the bayou coven doesn’t mean I managed to stay out of all the poilitics.”

She snorts. “Yeah, well. Better there than with dad. You’d have walked in blind and dumb. Anyway, you I’m not admin or anything, right? I only know what I hear around.”

You nod.

“Well, we already talked about Danielle. I’d be willing to bet if she doesn’t end up in the backseat of your jet, she’ll either get scooped by auntie M or the next guy through the pipeline.” She says, taking a sip of her drink.

“Kyou, I mean, I know what anyone else does. They’re talking like her shield is her talent, but I’d be shocked if that was it. Imperial witches are weird, and their talents track back thousands of years in her case.” She frowns. “There’s rumors she’s kinda like the Japanese answer to Natalya, but I don’t believe them.”

“Kinda, or is?”

“Is.” Ana responds. “I mean, listen, that’s just rumor, ok? And they really don’t like people repeating it. Kyou being batshit strong isn’t really that unusual given how imperial houses tend to be. The Romanov line like mom and me, we’re on the weakest end of it.”

“Which doesn’t make sense, given dad.”

Anastasia shrugs. “Could be I’m a sleeper like aunt merlin, who knows? but we were talking about your short list, not me. Unless you’re starting to think like Cass.” She pauses, making a show of looking you up and down. “I mean, you’re hot enough, but I don’t think I can get over the whole half-brother thing, even with the girlfriend chili, ok?”

You stare at her long enough to get a giggle. “Anyway, yeah. Kyou’s a mystery, otherwise. I don’t know anyone who’s flown with her, and even aunt Kat and Jess say she’s kinda a question mark. Her grades out of the Imperial Academy were top of her class, but that’s expected.”

“Like they’ll cover for her?”

Ana laughs. “No, rockhead. Like she’d have been expected to break herself off to get those grades. The Imperial family is expected to be the absolute best, but they don’t get corners cut for them to make it that way. She’s good because she’s expected to be, but she drove herself to it too.”

“Ok, what about Lotus?”

“Earhart? Oh man, what a mess.” Ana says. “So her grandmother had kids late, in the 50s, and then her mom had her late, in the late 80s. Her grandma was a matron back then, but her mom wasn’t ever even considered for it.”

“Why not?” You ask, rolling the tinfoil around the bread and putting it in the oven.

“Well, what do you know about non service witches?” She asks. You shake your head and shrug- you’re sure your mother told you something about it, once upon a time, but you didn’t pay much attention, since every witch in the bayou went into the military for a term anyway.

“Ok, well, even if you never ever plan on serving, you take an inactive reserve commission.” Ana says, explaining. “The deal is is it’s a recognition thing. You recognize that the fed gives you a lot of things as a witch and by accepting a commission, you’re saying, ya know, i get it, you gave me a lot of things.”

You nod.

“Well, that’s the tradition, anyway. Her mom broke it in the sixties. She not only refused to take a reserve commission, but she publicly sided with the anti-intervention crowd against her matrons, became sort of a mini celebrity doing it. Was one of the Jane Fonda crew, that whole mess.”

“So she’s on the outs with the coven?”

“Well, Lotus isn’t, but her mother certainly is. Bitch is still alive, goes on the talk circuit every now and then about militarization of our little girls and how the evil patriarchy is out to turn witches into just weapons and wombs. Dumb ho.”

“Ok, but what about Lotus?”

Ana shrugs. “Don’t know much. She’s a test driver for Lockmart, rumor says she never, ever gets lost. ever, and can find and kill a target the size of a car in an area the size of the RCAF’s Manitoba range.”

“That sounds specific.”

“It is.” Ana responds. “in a wyvern? man, she’d be one mother of a scary strike asset.”

[x] So what do you think?

“So what do you think?” You ask after a minute, taking the foil-wrapped bread out of the oven and taking off the apron you scared up.

Ana makes a great show of pondering the question, like she’s not sure about the answer she should give. “Hmm.” She says, after another minute. “If it were me, I’d pick the one with the best ass and nicest titties.”

You give her a slow blink and stare at her blankly for a second, until she laughs.

“I mean, it’d factor in my decision anyway. I don’t know Morg. I’m a witch, not a fighter pilot, and I’m no wyvern jock. All three of them are different and would mean different things. Danielle’s a navy girl, straight up. Kyou’s the strongest by far but she’s imperial royalty, and last i checked you weren’t into Japanese cooking. Lotus is certainly the most interesting, but I’m not sure how well she’s gonna deal with navy life.”

“That’s not much help.” You point out.

Anastasia shrugs. “I’m not the one to ask dummy. Honestly, no one is, not with you kinda agreeing to an arranged marriage via brain link or whatever the fuck. You gotta make the best call you can on your own. The only thing I can tell you is don’t hold out a lot of hope they’re gonna let you fly with your whole list of selections. You might be able to beg an alternate if you can convince the brass you’re just not meshing with any of your short list, but good fucking luck past that without the board siding with you.”

“I thought I was too expensive to get wrong?” You ask, motioning for her to follow you as you take the bread into the dining room.

“And far too expensive to let sit.” She responds, hopping off the bar stool she’d occupied and following you into the other room, taking a seat in there. “And it’s not like they’re putting witches on the list that you’d hate to begin with, they trim that bastard down pretty heavily before it even crosses the desk to you.”

“Fair enough. Don’t sit down, go get everyone.” You order. She sighs- but stands up.

“I’m only doing this cos you’re my big brother and I have to listen occasionally.” She says.

“Don’t take them through the kitchen.” You say, indicating the door to the hallway. “Go through there.”

“Why, is Morganlandia off limits to foreigners while the king is away?” She asks.

“Yes.” You say, turning to go back in the kitchen to fetch the chili pot.

They’re filing in as you bring the whole pot out, careful to not trip.

“So what prompted this?” Frank asks as you set it down, motioning for Merlin to pass you her bowl. “It’s not every day you make the chili.”

“The chili?” Danielle asks, taking a seat next to Anastasia.

“Morgan, you want to tell her, or should I?” Your sister asks.

[x] I’ll tell her. lemme pass out the food first.

You identify the trolling intent in her voice with a smile- Ana is pretty consistent, at least in that regard.
“I’ll tell her, let me pass out the food, first.” you say, spooning some chili into your aunt’s bowl and passing it back to her.

“So this chili-”

“No no, you gotta use the accent.” Ana insists, interrupting you.

You sigh. “Dis chili be taught to me by a man name Moses Murphy. He be husban to one of de matrons before my maman.” You say, the story bringing a smile to your face- it’s all true, of course, if somewhat embellished here and there. “His famile, dey have dem a chili recipe, passed down from papa to son, oui. Well, he marry a witch, and dey have no sons, just tree daughters.”

You fill your own bowl last, noting that there’s still plenty- enough that your aunt should be well stocked with leftover, even if your dad and sisters take some too. “De chili, it be a family treasure. Dey say de firs recipe stretch back to de civil war, out west. But wid no son, only de daughters, he have no one to pass it to. De tradition mighty prickly, oui.”

Taking your seat next to your aunt, across from Danielle, you continue the story. “I meet him years ago, when I was a small boy. Maman and de other matrons of de bayou, dey be meeting to discuss business, oui. Well, there not be much fo two men to be doin at a meeting of witches, so he start teachin me to cook. Over de years, dis became a thing- every coven gatherin, we’d cook, him and me.”

You pause. “Well, he be gettin no younger- an no sons be on de way, so one time, he take me aside, ask if I can carry on a tradition foah him. I already be havin plenty to do with de coven, but I say oui, I’ll carry dis on foah him.”

Danielle and Merlin, at least, are listening intently- your sisters have already heard the story, and it’s not one you’re sure Frank cares much for, probably feeling it’s something he should have been there to do with you. Not that he’s much of a cook- plenty good with a grill, but not an artist by any means.

“He give me a notebook, old and beaten, oui. It has every recipe of de chili dat each son in line since de first has added, all de way back to de original. Part of de tradition is addin your take on de chili for de next man in de tradition to have.”

“S-so who’s is this?” Merlin asks.

[x] Legacy recipe, from the war years. 1943

“This is a legacy recipe.” You say, smiling. “Moses’ father’s, actually. It’s from the war years, nineteen forty three. It’s one of my personal favorites.”

“It’s good.” Danielle says from her place across the table. “Like, really good. But it can’t be any good for my diet.”

You shake your head. “No, probably not. There’s not a lot that’s super unhealthy in there, most of the meat is supposed to be pretty lean, and all the vegetables are supposed to be organic, out of a victory garden, I think. And there’s not a lot of sugar in there, just a tiny pinch, because it was rationed.”

“So every man can only add one recipe to the book?” Frank asks. You nod.

“That’s the rule. You can add one to the book, just once.”

“So have you been working on your own?” Franks asks. “And can you share it?”

“I can share a version of it, but not the actual recipe that goes in the book.” You say. “It’s supposed to be a secret, kept just to the men of the family.”

“So would it go back to them, if there was a grandson?” Danielle asks.

You shrug. “I haven’t thought about it. Mister Moses made it clear the tradition was mine to carry on from there. I’m not sure if I’d pass it on to my son or his grandsons if there ever are any.”

“So what if you don’t have a son?” Cass asks. “I mean, you know witches...”

You grin.

[x] It goes to my football teamate, Bordeaux Bordeaux.

“It’s going to go to my old teammate, Bordeaux Bordeaux.” You say. BB was your offensive center, ultimately the guy you relied on more than almost anything during a play to buy you time. He was good, too- big and very quick for his size, and he ate like a dozen starving wolves. You’re not sure where he ended up after Annapolis- he was far, far too big to qualify for flight, but you know he’s in the navy somewhere.

“You know a Boodro Boodro?” Danielle asks, kind of butchering the name, but getting it fairly close for someone without the accent. “For real?”

You nod. “Met him in high school, we were friends all the way through Annapolis.”

“So why him?” Cass asks. “I mean, what about one of us?”

“Weren’t you listening, Cass?” Ana says. “It’s gotta go to a son. And maybe you shouldn’t weird out Danielle just yet.”

“It’s not that weird.” Cass sulks.

“Did I miss something?” Danielle asks, looking at Cass, then at you.

“Just Cass’ unnatural Morgan lust.” Ana supplies.

“Ana.” Frank says, the simple statement an announcement- drop it. “So Danielle, I hear you do SEAD work?”

She nods. “Yes, sir.”

Frank laughs. “You don’t have to call me sir, just call me Frank. And don’t call me Mr. Bishop, that’s my dad. I was kind of surprised when Merlin told me about your specialty. Doesn’t seem like there’s a lot of work for you.”

Danielle laughs. “Oh, I stay plenty busy. If I wash out here, I’m sure they’ll get me out to Sixth fleet pretty quickly, the only reason I got to stay here as long as I did was because of the Wyvern program. They’re keeping me another week or so, dependent on the LTs final selection and a reflight with him.”

“Who were you with?” Frank asks, leaving the implication that she’d be washing out alone.

“Fifth and Seventh” She says. “I was assigned to Fifth for most of my early career, and then to Seventh later. I’m still part of Seventh’s organization, but not for much longer I think.”

1/2
>>
“All pacific wyverns are seventh.” Merlin says. “O-or at least, they’re assigned to seventh. They go anywhere t-they’re needed, of course. I-if you don’t make selection, how long d-do you think you’ll be here?”

Danielle shrugs. “Depends on the navy, I guess.” She says.

Merlin nods, and Ana looks over you as if to say ‘told you so’

“I’m surprised you’re going to Sixth fleet.” Cass says. “Seventh is going to need you more.”

Danielle nods. “Probably, but there’s a couple other weasel witches there now, I think.”

“So what do you think of the wyvern, Danielle?” Frank asks. “I know the new model you’ve got isn’t the same as our wartime bird, but other than that?”

“I’m.. not sure.” Danielle says. “It’s demanding, but it’s soft? It’s hard to describe.” She says, after a minute. “I feel like I could fly in it forever, but after I’m out I just wanna find some place dark and warm and sleep forever.”

Merlin nods. “T-that’s about right. T-the interface is harder to run without a MIU link, and it’s less efficent. I-it doesn’t show you at your best, but it’s h-hard to ask anyone to get the i-implants when they’re not sure they’ll be with the program.”

“What about you, Morgan? This is the first time you’ve been up in a full fighter, isn’t it?” Frank asks. “It was all trainers before this? What did you think.”

So what ended up happening to the Valkyrie program anyway? I know that Wendy flew one with us to the last battle in '89 and that in the OG 2016 only VF-3 was really outfitted with them. I guessing that didn't happen here?
>>
>>3346990
[] Like it was made for me
>>
>>3347013
Right. Here the ones that Wendy used were bundled off to Dreamland, and they kinda disappeared for a while, with off and on work- fact was, even for Wendy, they were difficult to operate. Merlin got hold of them about a decade ago, so circa 2006, and started work on them in parallel with her work on the Wyvern and other projects. The Current prototypes are both new build, the gutted airframe is the original set from the end of the war. They, like the late war superstrikers, never entered squadron service.
>>
>>3346990
>[X] Like it was made for me.
>>
>>3347017
Whatever happened to the late war super-strikers? Was it decided that they just were too much for a witch to handle on one airframe to justify full-scale production?
>>
>>3347017
Also I guess more of an '89 question, confirmation really, but was Santa the Crusader pilot that flew with Ice's dad? Re-reading '89 and it popped out to me that Slider mentioned that the Crusader pilot that was flying with Ice's dad was named Santos, and that when we went back to Santa's late war the hostess mentioned him as Mr. Santos.
>>
>>3347026

Sort of. They were great- and most witches who trialed the few sets that were built loved them- but they were expensive and the Wyvern program was kind of the Navy's big ticket item through the 90s. There wasn't nearly as major a drawdown as there was in real life, but there was a reduction of defense spending after the war. The superstrikers still exist, but they're all in storage and there's only enough to equip one squadron. The Navy and air force are banking on the Valkyrie program as their major striker replacement.
>>
>>3346987
[] Like it was made for me.
>>
>>3347033
>The Navy and air force are banking on the Valkyrie program as their major striker replacement.

But wouldn't they have to be plugged for the re-up version if what Ana says is correct? Aren't witches willing to get plugged super rare? How do the covens feel about that?
>>
>>3347037

They would be. The idea is that quality would be better than quantity- you wouldn't need more than a couple squadrons, and could quarter the witches the military requires with these.

The covens official stance is 'it's personal choice'. Privately, of course, there's varying opinions on it.
>>
Ghost, you mentioned witches always taking some sort of commission, as recognition for special priviledges, but what exactly are those for a witch who wants to stay civilian? And what if a witch walks away from the covens without really breaking a rule, instead of going hard against them like middle Earhart?
>>
>>3347065

In the US, every single witch is entitled to an academy education, totally on the government. That's equivalent to getting a full ride to college- though the academy starts much earlier. They also get what amounts to free healthcare- though, obviously, that doesn't matter much in a lot of cases for some witches. That applies even for witches that stay fully civilian- of which there are more than there were in '89. There's also a lot more government support for witches- limited basic income, if they want it, housing, and work placement and training, all on uncle sam's dime.

As for the covens, that's a little different. Even a public split, like Lotus' mom had, doesn't mean you're getting away from the coven entirely- an orphan witch is a lonely, lonely place to be. There are witches that ignore tradition quietly and don't really do anything the coven wants them to- eventually they're just written off and not included in coven politics or benefits anymore- they're not out of the sisterhood, the support network for them is still there, but the coven asks nothing of them- and doesn't give them anything either except in extremis.

Basically, it's like walking away from your family (Assuming you've got a supportive family)- you cut yourself off, but they'll take you back if you're in trouble.
>>
>>3347059
Are the army and the marines looking at something similar for land based witches? If I remember correctly the army basically ditched land-strikers almost completely post-WWIII.
>>
>>3347085
I assume that Lotus' mom is persona non grata among the Covens and military personnel?
>>
>>3347087
Not really. the army is supposedly working with DARPA on improved tank strikers, and the USMC would field valkyries alongside the navy, kind of like how they operate Wyverns.

[x] Like it was made for me.

“Like it was made for me.” You respond, getting a smile and nod from Frank and a knowing grin from Aunt Merlin. She’s hiding things, you know- there’s no way the hours she’s spending under the skin of your jet is normal, even for wyvern startup. You make a note to approach her about it later.

“Well, give what I’ve heard, you handled it like a natural. But I guess that shouldn’t be that surprising, huh?” Frank says, laughing.

“Dad please.” Anastasia says, looking at you and rolling her eyes- it’s a joke on his part, a sort of self-effacing one, reaching over the table to break off a piece of garlic bread. “Leave it to the moms to tell us how great a fighter pilot you were.”

He laughs. “Alright, alright. So have they told you who your next candidate will be, Morgan?”

You shake your head. “I haven’t heard anything. I know I have a flight tomorrow, but I don’t know who with, yet.”

That gets Frank to frown. “Really? Huh. If she’s scheduled for flight tomorrow she should be on base already. You want me to make a call or two? I can try and find out for you.”

[x] If you don’t mind, sure.

“If you don’t mind, sure.” You say, motioning for your aunt to pass her bowl back to you so you can refill it and filling Danielle’s again a second later. “I know they try to keep it a surprise to see how we adapt and how fast we learn.”

“But that’s garbage.” Frank says. “You’d better not have to have to adapt to a new RIO nearly as fast as they seem to want you to. And they’d better not have to adapt to new pilots, either. It’s stupid navy games for no good reason. Getting you to acclimatize to new subsystems is fine, that’s part of the design of the wyvern, but once you’re crewed, that’s it. Plugged crews don’t separate, and we saw a couple of times you can’t shuffle them around, either. If one stops flying, that’s it for the whole crew unless the other goes solo.”

Merlin nods. “A-and the MIU isn’t designed to swap users like that, either. I should talk to the training command about cleaning up the w-wyvern pipeline. T-there’s no reason to have crews w-wait till they have their jet to meet a-and fly together.”

“It would be nice to not be in limbo.” Danielle says, and you nod in agreement- you’re kind of in the same place, unable to move on till selection, at least, is done. There’s supposed to be a workup period as well, but it’s a not so secret stance that once a crew is finalized, wyverns go to do a ‘grand tour’ of USN carrier decks and spend a month or so aboard each, during which time you’re ‘in training’ but also available if the need arises.

“I’ll make a couple calls after dinner, then.” Frank says, leaning back in his chair. “That was really good, Morgan. Thanks for sharing it.”

“You just got lucky dad, he was making that for Aunt Merlin.” Ana says, finishing her second bowl. “He’s trying to impress her.”

“Ah. Bit of a crush then?” Frank asks, laughing.

“Daaaad!” Cassie whines. “Morgan does not have a crush on aunt Merlin!”

“Don’t get jealous, scaly.” Ana says- earning her a stern glance from Frank.

He laughs again, after a second, looking around. “Morgan, you want help cleaning this up?”

I think it's more for her pointing out, blatantly and around someone who isn't part of the family, that Cassie has a socially unacceptable crush on her older brother by blood, and can and has acted on it before. [x] Sure, I guess. Thanks.

You nod, wiping your mouth one last time. “Sure, I guess. Thanks.”

He grins. “It’s a lot easier to clear six places off than it is to clear a dozen back home.” he says, standing up.

“I’ll help too!” Cassie says, popping up out of her seat like she’s got a spring under her.

“Thanks, Cass. this should go quick then. Why don’t you get the dirty dishes?” Frank directs as you pick up the chili pot and start to carry it back to the kitchen.

“We’ll go chat in the living room.” Anastasia says, getting nods from Danielle and Merlin both.

Frank follows you into the kitchen, carrying the leftover garlic bread and the milk and wine- Merlin had a little to drink, though you can’t say you’d pair wine with the chili. Perhaps a good beer or cider- you’ll have to remember it for her, next time.

Either way, you clear the table quickly, though Frank lingers in the kitchen.

“I’m sorry I wasn’t able to make it to your graduation.” He offers- usually a lead-in to a kind of awkward attempt to start a conversation. He’s never really seemed sure of you- you’re very much you’re mother’s son, but you’re pretty sure he never knew how to handle maman, either.

You nod. “I understand how it goes. Maman missed high school.”

“So you know your aunt has talked to me about going back to the fleet and acting as your ground crew chief?” He says.

You nod. “She talked to me about it.”

“I think you ought to talk to her about it some more, then.” He says. “It’s her decision, but I don’t think she understood what I meant when she brought it up with me. I think she should do it.”

“You do?” You ask.

He nods. “Listen, I’m not in the best place to ask you any favors, and I know that.”

“But you plan to anyway.” You point out- there’s no malice in your statement, just an observation of fact.

“Samantha’s been banking on this since you started showing interest in aviation.” He says, after a minute. “She misses the fleet, and the company isn’t doing her right.”

Now that’s a surprise- you were always under the impression that she loved her job at Chance-Vought.

“How so?”

He sighs, leaning against the counter and crossing his arms in front of his chest. “They want her to stop flying, they say it’s too dangerous to let her keep testing systems up there with me. They want her to start delegating more and more to her junior engineers and team, and do less herself.” He shakes his head. “She’s happy hands-on, and they’re trying to put her in a padded office because they’re scared she’ll hurt hereself.”

I'd be surprised if the navy was terribly happy about her joining a crew either. Irritating your supplier isn't a great idea.

i admit, I'll be a little annoyed if we don't actually get a choice in the matter. She shouldn't be active military, she's too valuable in R&D.
>>
>>3349223
It's also not right to deny her if she wants to lead a crew. She's done more than her part, if she wants to do more, let her decide how.
>>
>>3349223
pretty much. It'd be like using Browning for a tank mechanic.
>>
>>3349232
Dunno if you noticed, but this is the military we're talking about. "Right" here is what's best for them, not her.

And if Vought isn't giving her what she wants, any of the other companies would snap her up in a heartbeat.

Considering the Navy was wanting to put her name forward as a possible SIO for Morgan AND have ask her twice to come back to active duty to run the ground crew on his Wyvern, I'm pretty sure they they'd be more then happy with that outcome.

[x] You think the navy would treat her better? what about coven politics?

“You think the navy would treat her any better?” You ask. “What about coven politics?”

He shrugs. “Politics has never been my game, but the navy, at least, is never going to tell Samantha she can’t have something in reason. If she wants to go active they’ll be more than happy to give her a spot, and if she wants to be on your go-crew...” He trails off, then shrugs a second time.

“If she tells them she wants to run your crew, they’ll jump at the chance. It’d mean you’d have a hell of a sortie rate, and as close to one hundred percent availability as it’s possible to get. That alone is worth it to them. She’s practically navy already anyway, she’s involved with every wyvern startup, even though she doesn’t need to be, and spends more time here and at china lake and a couple other bases than she does at home.”

“And what about her R&D work?” You ask. “If she’s leading my crew, she’s not working on Valkyrie or anything else.”

He nods. “She’d have to slow down, at least. But she was able to do a lot of that kind of thing on the front in a war, so I wouldn’t think she’d stop entirely.” He pauses. “Look, I’m not sure about this whole thing, but there’s definite pressure from above, on me, to stop flying with her. They want her in an office, at a desk, and the shareholders are terrified something will happen up there and we’ll both bite it and poof-“ He snaps his fingers. “There goes the golden goose.”

“What about your job?” You ask- like he said earlier, plugged crews aren’t the kind of thing you can change around. A pilot and a witch are a crew, and that’s it- neither one will ever have another.

1/2
>>
He laughs. “Even if I don’t fly ever again, I’ve got a half dozen crews to manage, and two plugged test crews. I’m not sure about giving it up, I don’t want to yet, but I am getting a little old to be tackling catastrophic failure cascades brought on by prototype and test equipment.” He grins. “And I think Rachel and Tabitha and Katya wouldn’t mind me hanging up my boots, so to speak.”

“Ok, so the navy wouldn’t be a problem. What about the coven?”

“What about them?” Frank asks. “They’re not how they used to be, even back in the eighties. They’ll leave her alone enough just because of her rank, and they’ve long since stopped trying to get her and I to sleep together, and she’s too old to try and politic to do anything she doesn’t want. She’d be a matron if she had any interest in it.”

“So only the navy faces downsides?” You ask.

He shrugs. “Mostly. I’d expect you to take care of her if she went navy, but if the navy’s willing to let her come off of R&D work and go back to the fleet, they’ve decided that’s going to work better in the long run.”

“Of course,” He points out. “Merlin’s bad at people, but she’s not stupid. She probably has a plan of her own, too.” He pauses. “Look, if you’ve already talked to her that’s fine. But I think she should go for it, and you’ll want her around if this thing with China turns into anything.”

[x] I’ll talk to her later, then.

“I’ll talk to her later, but whatever decision she makes is going to be her own.” You say, after a moment.

Frank nods. “Guess I can’t ask for more than that. Should we go out and join them for a bit?”

You look around the kitchen- it’s not clean by far, so you’ll have to do that yet, or it’ll never get done, but otherwise everything’s fine. You nod, letting your father lead the way out into the living room, where the girls are sitting.

“So your mom is skipper of the Saratoga?” Danielle is asking Anastasia, who nods. “That’s pretty cool, I haven’t been off that one yet.”

“Mom’s probably going to get out after this cruise, but she says that after every cruise.” Anastasia says with a smile. “I think she’s jealous of Rachel and all the time she gets to spend at home.”

“That doesn’t sound like Tabitha at all.” Frank says, jumping into the conversation. “but she’s been at sea for almost thirty years. She’s ready to get out and spend some time at home before jumping into coven politics.”

“Mom?” Anastasia asks. “A matron? C’mon dad, that’s not even funny.”

“Why not?” Frank responds. “She’s got the rank and time for it, she’s got the connections the coven likes and she’s the oldest living witch on the Romanov line, and that alone qualifies her for it.”

“There’s no way she’s not going to want to stay home after a week or two of being there.” Anastasia persists. “She’s burning out on all this shit anyway. When’s the last time she was in the same place as you or Rachel or Katya for more than a week?” She shakes her head. “I think once she’s had her retirement ceremony, she’s just going to live at home and be happy and lazy.”

“What’s a matron do, anyway?” Cass asks. “I mean, we know when they come to visit they always just cause problems, but what do they do?”

“Well, Morgan’s mom is a Matron. Morgan?” Anastasia asks.

[x] Maman’s active in the parish making sure younger witches are being taken care of properly, she coordinates things with the governor and negotiates with the wider US coven.

You know most of your maman’s work just through stories you’ve been told- most of the time, despite your highly unofficial status as the prince of the coven.

“She’s active in the parish making sure the younger witches are taken care of properly, seeing they get academy positions they qualify for and end up where they want to be. She also coordinates things with the governor when he requires it, press conferences, that kind of thing.” You say, thinking. Most of the time, her ‘work’ is done in the parlor downstairs- there never seems to be much formality to it, just Maman and a few other matrons deciding what should be done, and then making it happen, and most of the time it’s as simple as a phone call or two for her. You’ve met a few governors, too, when they came to visit, to ask the coven’s blessing on something or for the coven’s support on a decision.

“Sooooooo she plays politics.” Anastasia supplies, and you nod. A lot of it is just that- favor trading, mostly. Coven influence is in a strange place- socially, they exert a lot of influence, especially back home, but politically they’re almost a nonentity. Of course, their military ties still give them disproportionate pull in the federal government, but on the local and state level? No one wants the coven lined up against them, but at the same time it’s not the kiss of death it used to be.

1/2
>>
“That’s most of it, yes.” You say. “She also negotiates with the wider US coven as a whole under the leading matron of the allied covens. I think right now that’s a medicine woman from the Crow.”

“I wonder how much longer they’ll stay independent?” Frank asks, getting a shrug out of you- you have no way of knowing. “I know a lot of the independent nations up in the northwest have been talking about uniting with the continental coven for a while now.”

“That’s old news, dad.” Cassie responds. “They’ve been saying that since I was a kid.”

Frank shrugs. “Maybe, I don’t know. I haven’t met any of them. Anyway, I’ve got to go make a couple phone calls, I’ll be out back.” He says, pulling out his cell phone and walking around the back of the room to the sliding glass doors leading out onto the patio.

Anastasia stares at his back for a minute and laughs, turning to look at Danielle. “Don’t mind dad, he’s like the world’s biggest golden retriever. He’s honest and lovable, but man is he a doofus sometimes.”

“He seems nice.” Danielle responds, looking kind of out of her element. “Didn’t ever really think I’d meet him though.”

Cass laughs. “Wait till you meet Morgan’s mom. She’s way cooler than dad anyway.”

“Brigitte’s here?” Danielle asks. “I- I mean-”

“She was here, but she probably already left.” you say. “We’d have already seen her otherwise.”

“She still does the commando thing?” Cass asks.

You shake your head. “No, but old habits die hard. Maman can pop up when you least expect her, and disappear without you ever noticing. You get used to it.”

“So does she ever do that on dates?” Cass asks. “Just show up I mean?”

“Cass, could you not be creepy for like, fifteen minutes?” Anastasia sighs. “Like, just fifteen. Look, I know our half brother is a tan greek god from the bayou, but really.”

“I was just asking!” Cass says, trying to defend herself.

“I mean, it seems like a good thing to know.” Danielle responds. Merlin, for her part, seems quite content to just listen.

[x] Mom never did, but her team would.

You grin at the memory- they don’t do it anymore, but the conspicuous presence of two or more of mom’s wartime witches, the women she went into combat at the head of, more than once- a row or two behind you and your date is one you’ll never forget. You’re pretty sure more than one of your dates never will either. “Mom never did, but her team would.”

Danielle laughs. “That’s a hell of a chaperon.” She says. “You were that bad?”

You shake your head. “Wasn’t because of me. They wanted to make sure none of the girls made moves.”

She blinks at that. “What, really?”

You nod. “Yeah.”

“See, Morgan over there is paranoid as an alley cat about the matrons and witches.” Anastasia supplies, helpfully. “His mom convinced him that all the matrons that run the family books are only ever interested in him and are always going to try and pair him off with their favorites. Ya know.” She makes an obscene gesture, sticking her ring finger in her other fist repeatedly. “For his seed.”

“It’s a reasonable concern!” Cass responds, rising to your defense. “I mean, if you think about it. He’s Dad’s only son and you know how interested they were in dad.”

“Cassie, please.” Anastasia says. “Anyway Danielle, yeah. He can be a bit of a dip about girls, don’t take it personally if he’s like that with you.”

Danielle shrugs. “He’s been nothing but professional so far.” Her voice is neutral- it’s a statement of fact, nothing more. “I can appreciate that, considering what this is.”

“Yeah, well, just so you know.” Anastasia says as your dad walks back in, closing the sliding glass door behind him- and inadvertently ending your sister’s fun.

“Well, Bill- that’s general Adams, he’s the guy in charge of crew scheduling for the wyvern program, said Kyou is the next witch you’ll be flying with.” Frank says. “He didn’t tell me much else than that, though, you probably know more about her than I do.”

“That’s the imperial princess, isn’t it?” Anastasia asks. “The real one I mean, not like me or Christina.”

“Yeah.” you say.

Greek god you say? Normally sisters would be immune but I think Cass must have rolled a 1 and failed her will save against a lethal dose of witchy catnip.

Pretty much. We know for a fact that they're out to get us, our sisters might brush it off but mom was certainly serious about it. The fact that they even *tried* to get dad to knock up his daughteRIO multiple times just shows that they'll try anything to get their way. They won't necessarily succeed but it still puts us in an uncomfortable spot.

[x] Should be interesting, like you said.

“Should be interesting, like you said.” You say, noting Merlin looking positively excited by the news- she, no doubt, knows more about the Japanese witch than you do.

“Well, I’ll actually be around to watch, this time.” Frank says, then he grins. “On the ground, don’t worry. Our test ship isn’t rigged for captive systems and Merlin’s got her grounded for the next couple days with a software update anyway.”

“Patch.” Merlin corrects. “It’s not an update, it’s a weapons patch.”

“Ah. It shouldn’t take too long then, right?” Frank asks.

“Another day, at least.” Merlin responds, easily. “O-or more.”

“Why are you patching it, auntie M?” Cass asks.

“Compatibility.” Merlin says. “We’re going to be doing more weapons release and captive flight tests, but o-our software is a little out of date, a-and our AI can’t a-adapt itself like the newest models can, so we install patches.”

“But Morgan’s jet can?” Cass continues, leaning forward a bit. Merlin nods.

“I-it’s a next-gen AI.” Merlin explains. “If the weapon can m-mate with the hardware, the AI can use it, n-no need for specialized software.”

“So what about crew?” Cass asks. “Can it adapt to new crew, if it’s needed?”

Merlin hesitates. “M-maybe. I’d want to run more tests b-before we tried it.”

“Alright, Cass, I think that’s enough.” Anastasia says, standing up. “Dad? Let’s go before she scares Danielle worse than she probably already has. We’re not all fountains of brother-lust Danielle, I swear.”

Danielle laughs. “It’s alright. She is right, he is damn good looking.” She says, with a grin aimed at you as she stands up. “I’m pretty beat too, so I’m going to get going as well. Thanks for the chili LT, it was amazing.”

“B-Before you go, let me get your contact number, D-Danielle.” Merlin says. “I-I’ll need to talk some, but I m-may want to work with you in the future.”

Danielle looks a little floored by the statement- Merlin is, afterall, considered the world’s leading expert on development of computer and aerospace technologies. Working with her is a pretty big deal- well, for most people. You’ve helped her plenty before, though always in very minor capacities. “S-sure.” She says, pulling out her phone.

>>
“Morgan, what about you?” Frank asks. “I can get one of your sisters to drive you home if you want, or you can use my bedroom downstairs here.”

Merlin looks over at your dad in alarm. “Y-you think he should?” she asks, nervously. “P-people might g-get the wrong i-impression...”

Frank laughs. “On Miramar? with Morgan?” He shakes his head. “I doubt anyone would even notice, you’re practically closer family to him than I am.” He pauses. “But if it makes you uncomfortable-”

“N-no.” Merlin says, shaking her head and blushing. “I-I just don’t want a-anyone to think w-we’re... y-you know...”

“Auntie M, no one would blame you if you did anyway.” Anastasia says. “I mean, look at the boy. Yow.”

“Now who’s lusting after our brother?” Cass asks, smugly.

Danielle laughs, shaking her head at the look on Anastasia’s face. “Miss Wells, do you have your phone?”

“H-huh? O-oh! yes, let me get it!” Merlin says, hopping off her spot on the couch and thumping back up the stairs- for as small as she is, she does make a lot of noise. She runs back down almost immediately, her phone out. “A-and meet me a-at ops in the morning.” She says to Danielle. “I-I’d like to talk to you some m-more.”

Danielle nods.

“Well, if you’re staying, Morgan, you need to decide.” Frank says. “Your sisters are ready to go, unless you feel fine to drive.”

Well now that we know we're supposed to get in and murder most everything within the operational area along with the main target we can plan for that.

[x] I should go, yeah. Who’s driving?

“I should go, yeah.” You say. “Be a couple of minutes, I need to clean the kitchen and get the leftovers put away.”

“I’ll stay to drive!” Cass offers. “I can just sleep on the couch in your TOQ, I don’t have to be anywhere tomorrow, and I can come along tomorrow morning to watch!”

“Normally I’d say I would, just so the thirst over there isn’t alone with you, but I do have places to be tomorrow.” Anastasia says, looking over at your other sister, who looks positively giddy at the possibility of being unsupervised with you overnight. She won’t try anything overt- at least, she hasn’t in the past- but you may see more of her underwear than you want to.

Not, you think, that that’s any different from her being bareleg anyway.

“Alright, well if that’s sorted.” Frank says. “Morgan, thanks for dinner, it was good.”

You nod at him as he steps out, turning back to head into the kitchen to do a little cleanup- you know your aunt, most likely, won’t touch anything here, and you don’t really have time to do dishes, but you’ve got enough time to put the leftovers in a couple of containers and slide them in the fridge.

Everyone else has left by the time you head out, so you hug your aunt goodbye, telling her about the leftovers, and climb in the car next to Cass. She’s quiet on the drive back to the TOQ- not entirely unusual, though maybe slightly.

“Visitor, LT?” The marine on duty at the desk asks, looking up as you and Cassie walk in. You shake your head.

“Sister.” You respond. “She need to sign in?”

“I’ll need to see her ID.” He responds, taking it and looking it over. “Have a good night, sir, ma’am.” He says, handing it back.

You lead the way up to your rooms- a combined livingroom/kitchenette, with an attached, if small, bathroom and a single small bedroom. Cassie, for her part, flops out on the couch almost immediately, dramatically throwing an arm over her eyes as she does so. “I’m beat.” She says, after a minute. “You mind if I take a quick shower?”

You look over at her. “You didn’t bring a change of clothes.”

She shrugs. “I’m just gonna go to bed anyway.”

“So what are you gonna wear in the morning?”

She laughs. “It’s not like I haven’t worn day old clothes before.” She points out, then smiles. “Or are you just nervous you won’t be able to resist?”

[x] More worried about you catching pneumonia.

“More worried about you catching pneumonia.” You say, unbuttoning your shirt and shrugging out of it.

“Well, you could always help keep me warm.” She purrs- or tries to, anyway. Cass is nothing if not dedicated- though her single-mindedness hasn’t given her much practice on anyone else. You’d almost feel bad for her- she’s never going to get what she’s after, barring catastrophic injury or possibly traumatic alcohol intake on your part, you think- but she seems to enjoy the ‘chase’ such as it is, as much as anything else.

“Yeah, that’s not happening.” You say. “If you want to take a shower, I’ll pull out the couch and get the spare set of linens on it, then I’m going to rack out.”

“Aww, you don’t want to stay up and watch TV?” She asks, adjusting herself on the couch so there’s room to join her. It’s not much room, you’d have to sit almost uncomfortably close to her, but that’s probably her intent. Part of you wonders what would happen if you called her bluff- you’re willing to bet she wouldn’t know what to do. You’re also willing to bet it very much wouldn’t be worth the trouble.

“I have a flight tomorrow, remember.” You say. “Are you gonna take a shower or what? Didn’t you take one just before you came out with me to make the chili anyway?”

“So you want me to get naked and wet?” She grins at you.

You blink. “I’ll just get the linens out, you can put them on the pull out yourself.” you say, turning to go pull them out of the small closet in the bedroom.

“Wait.” She says, standing up and crossing over to block your way. “I’m sorry Morgan. I just haven’t had a chance to talk with you in forever without Ana being a bitch about it. Will you just sit up a little while with me and we can catch up?”

You look down at her- she’s sincere, if nothing else.

[] Sorry Cass, I do have a flight tomorrow. I’ll make it up to you after that.

[x] Sure, I guess. We haven’t talked in a while.

You look down at her for a few moments, then nod. “Sure, I guess.” You say, half turning to guide her past you and back towards the living room. “But not for too long though.”

She nods, padding back to the couch and sitting on it again, this time sprawling out to claim the whole thing to herself, flipping off her shoes and wiggling her socks at you. She grins. “It’s good to have you around again.” She says, after a minute. “I missed you, big brother.”

You nod, walking past to pull a couple bottles of coke out of the fridge- while the caffeine this late isn’t the best idea, it’s not going to affect you much anyway- it never has, either way. You have to drink a lot of it to feel it, and even more for it to begin to affect your sleep. You walk back and hand her one, sitting in one of the two chairs in the room and twisting the top off. “Good to see you again, too, Cassie.” You tell her. For all her... quirks, it’s true, too- you have missed your sisters. You’ve always gotten along with them pretty well, and they’re some of the few people you trust- even if you still trust Auntie M more.

“So, you’re headed to the Kaga?” You ask, and she nods. “Why’d you go for that?”

“Aunt Jessica.” She says, sighing. “I let her talk me into it. I kinda don’t want to now, because they’ll be looking for aggressors and I’d like to stay here while you’re here too.” She pauses. “You’re the only one I think that ever understands me.”

You shrug. “They’re not that bad, are they?”

“Ana’s the only other one here.” She responds. “And she’s a bitch, especially when it comes to you. Stasya’s based here, along with Tabby-mom, but Tabby’s never home and Stasya’s always busy. And we don’t have a lot in common anyway. Samantha is up at NAS Alameda for the next few weeks, but she’s headed to Norfolk. She’s probably already on the road. I mean, It’s not that bad, I have friends and girls I’ve flown with I see around here, but it’s different.”

You nod- you understand, to an extent. You trust friends you made in school a lot more than other people sometimes, but it’s still nice to have family you can talk to around- you may hate them occasionally, but they’re still family afterall.

“And now you’re here, and I’m leaving for a cruise on an imperial Japanese boat where I won’t know anyone at all.” she says. “It sucks.”

[] Yeah, but it sounds like you don’t have much choice. You already agreed to it.

Then you decide to check the thread on a whim, realizing that we're going to run just as you have to leave to see a movie. When you get back, the thread is over.
WELP. Guess I missed this one.

[x] Yeah, but it sounds like you don’t have much choice. You already agreed to it.

“Yeah, but it sounds like you don’t have much choice.” You say, taking a sip of coke. “You already agreed to it. Besides, you might make some new friends.”

She shakes her head. “I probably won’t.”

“Not if you go out there to be miserable.” You point out. “But aunt Jess has done pretty well.”

“Aunt Jess is attached at the hip to an imperial princess.” Cass says scornfully. “I mean, they’re great and everytime we’ve gone to visit it’s been great, but of course she’s popular. She’s everyone’s American big sister.”

“And what’s saying you can’t be?” You say. “C’mon Cass, you can people perfectly well, you’re not auntie M. You’re not even as bad as I am.”

“You’re great with people.” Cass retorts. “And it’s just... I don’t know. You’re here, and I’d like to at least get to see my brother a while.”

You nod- you understand, you do, but at the same time, you view it as just being one of those things. “I get that, but you know we’re both navy, and this happens.”

She sighs again. “I guess. I’m going to take that shower, if you don’t mind. Don’t worry, I’ll keep a towel on till I go to bed.” She says, after a minute.

You nod, standing up and setting what’s left of your coke on the table next to you. “I’ll get the pull out made up for you.”

She smiles. “Thanks. You know, sometimes I think it’s a cruel joke you’re my brother. You’re just about perfect.”

You shake your head at her with a grin. “Cass, one day you’re gonna meet someone I can’t hold a candle to. Now go shower, I’ll have the bed made up for you.”

She hesitates, wanting the last word- like her mother, in that, you think- but then nods, pulling off her socks as she passes you, shoving them into your chest with a grin. “Here.” She says, getting a bemused head shake in return.

You toss them in the bedroom, moving her shoes in there as well while you get the linens out, pulling out the couch that looks like it’s been here since sometime in the mid 90s and putting the sheets on, throwing one of the pillows from the bedroom on and grabbing your poncho liner to spread it out as a blanket. You can’t quite remember where you got it from, but the desert marpat pattern at least hints at it’s original branch.

1/2
>>
Cassie gets out of the shower, and, true to her word, is wrapped in a towel- though you do think she managed to cover as little as possible to be decent. She blinks when she sees you sitting on top of the pull out, surfing through the cable TV channels without interest. “Morgan?” She asks.

You point at the bedroom. “You can sleep in there.” You say. “This is plenty fine enough for me.”

“Oh.” She doesn’t sound surprised that that’s what you had to say. “You sure? I’ll be fine on the couch.”

You shake your head. “Nah, it’s fine. this way you can have a bit more privacy, and I’ll probably be awake before you anyway.”

“You mind if I watch TV with you for a while?” She asks. “I’ll get a blanket or something.”

You shrug. “That’s fine.”

She’s asleep inside of twenty minutes- surprising, given you decided to watch naked and afraid. The show, which is fun to watch, was also something she’d once suggested you and she try out for- though you’re pretty sure they don’t allow that kind of thing, it would be interesting enough to do. Though, for some reason, you doubt she was interested in the survival aspect of it.

You let her sleep for about forty five minutes- enough time to make sure she’s good and asleep for real- before scooping her up, blanket and all, and carrying her to the bedroom, depositing her in bed and pulling the sheets up over her. You grin as she thrashes for a second, then curls into a tight ball and goes back sleeping soundly, a very faint smile on her face.

You’re feeling a little charitable towards your little sister, as you head to your own bed, pulling the bedroom door closed behind you, till you notice she’s somehow left her skivvies on the table next to the pull-out.

Figures. Typical Cass.

Sorry about the pacing and everything the last couple days guys, it's kinda been one bit of bad news after another. I'm going to be taking it easy the rest of the weekend, and if I don't hear back on Monday from one of these other places I put in at, I may talk to a good buddy up north about work up that way. We'll see what happens, I guess, and drive on regardless, haha!

Ok guys! No real news here yet, haha! Archives are linked up in last week's OP, so there's no need to re-link them here, I think. Other than that, uh... warframe is still grindy and I hate the newest NPC. woo, I guess?

===========================================================================================

Other than waking up, the morning has been... boring, for lack of a better word.

You’d gotten up long before Cass- if nothing else, given the chance, your sisters will sleep like the dead. Still, you’d made a fast breakfast for the both of you- eggs and toast- and managed to get in your morning run before there were signs of life under the wad of blankets she’d managed to cocoon herself in. A cup of coffee- well, about half coffee, half creamer and sugar- got her moving enough to get your quarters cleaned up and locked for the day. It wasn’t till you’d made it to ops that you noticed that she’d simply stolen a pair of your PT shorts instead of reclaiming her own undergarments.

Ops put you on standby- also known as sit in a classroom till everything got sorted. You’d managed to send Cass to claim your laptop from your quarters, and have been watching cooking videos for what feels like the last short eternity. You can only watch Babbish deep-fry a double hamburger so many times before it loses it’s charm.

You’re in the middle of another search- looking for the best damn chocolate cake recipes and methods you can possibly find- when the door swings open. At this point there’s been a few people in and out who wanted to ‘talk’- mostly officers you hadn’t met yet introducing themselves. In one notable case, a marine colonel shared a few stories from the war. He’d been a newly-minted 2nd lieutenant in the closing weeks, flying hornets out of Taiwan.

You were expecting a few bodies- it’s not everyday an Imperial princess makes a wyvern short list, afterall, and she’s sure to have her own entourage as well, guardsmen and the like. Still, about ten people pile into the small classroom behind a taller woman- a witch, no doubt, judging by her attire.

She’s clearly athletic- no gymbunny like Danielle, for sure, but she looks like she stays in fairly good shape, which, given who she is, doesn’t surprise you. Her black hair is cut to frame her face, short on the sides with a long single ponytail starting high on her head and a pair of long sidelocks. She’s wearing what looks more like an IJN uniform than a USN one, though you’re pretty sure that’s part of the point of the exchange program.

>>
The thing that strikes you, though, is how she looks at you- she’s got predator’s eyes, your mom would call them. She’s already sized you up, determining what kind of threat you are almost as soon as she made any other judgments. You’d be impressed- it usually takes people at least a second or two to do that, and it’s a trained habit. Someone, somewhere, taught this witch to watch out for herself, despite her being accompanied by an imperial guard almost everywhere.

There’s a blank look on her face as you deliberately shut off the video, noting that she, too, ranks you.

“Cooking videos?” She asks- in Japanese. She’s not really addressing it to you, and her blink lets you know it for what it was- a momentary slip of the tongue driven by surprise.

You thank your guardian spirits that you’re at least conversational in the language, courtesy of your aunts Jessica and Katsumi.

[x] “There’s many kinds of craftsmanship, highness. This is just one of mine.”
“There’s many kinds of craftsmanship, highness.” You say, standing and bowing politely. “This is just one of mine.”

There’s another very brief look of surprise on her face when she realizes you just responded in Japanese- then a very faint smile as she returns the bow. “I see that my information on you was more limited than they had indicated, Lieutenant Laroux-Bishop.” she says, straitening back up with more of a smile.

You nod, a slight incline of the head, successfully squelching the desire to smile at the looks of confusion on the USN personnel- probably public relations officers. That they didn’t bring an interpreter is going to make it interesting, at least till someone has the presence of mind to send for one.

“I’m afraid they didn’t tell me much about you, either.” You admit.

“I’ll spare you the details until dinner.” She says, the grin returning. “I regret to inform you they expect a photo opportunity. It is not everyday the son of Admiral Brigitte Laroux flies with an imperial witch.” She doesn’t move, but conveys by flicking her eyes back towards the public relations people. You note there’s a pair of them there too in IJN uniforms- the duty gray of their uniform contrasting with the NWUs of the USN officers.

At least from the sounds of things, she's had to play "the game" like us. Though it'd arguably be a bit worse with both "noble" upper class families and the Japanese covens vying for her.
>>
[x] I’d expected as much. We’ll wait till then.

“I’d expected as much.” You admit. “We’ll wait till then.”

She smiles, finally crossing the room to take the seat next to yours as the briefing officer- the Marine Colonel from earlier, shoulders his way into the room. He frowns at the gaggle of people who’d been blocking the door. “Y’all kindly move your asses over to the wall over there.” He says, gesturing with his free hand towards the far wall. “And any pictures you take during the briefing have to clear public relations. We don’t want wyvern crews knowing what they’ll be doing during the pipeline.”

You have to work not to grin at his apparent frustration- it’s an emotion you’re familiar with, both through your own parents and your own limited contact with the press. These are all navy public relations people, granted, but that’s not too far removed from an irritating embed, as your mother would refer to them.

“Alright.” He says, looking over as his adjutant walks in. “Dog that hatch, then hit the lights.” The younger marine nods, closing the door and shutting off the room lights, dropping you into darkness.

“I’m Colonel Jackson, and I’m the executive officer of the Wyvern program here at Miramar. Sorry we didn’t get a chance to meet earlier. I’ll have to talk to you both later.” He starts. “This will be Hop 2 in your startup and testing process. I’ve been informed they weren’t happy with several aspects of your first hop, so we’re going to fix that shit right now.”

A map of the national training center appears on the wall, the projector finally warming up. You note there’s no fixed target displayed- just ‘target areas’.

“the objective of this hop, in keeping with the princess’ ability, is to establish air domination over the NTC for ground operations currently taking place there. The commanders of BLUEFOR have allowed us to use this as a chance for training with friendly ground elements- meaning there may be additional calls for you to make strikes on ground targets in support.” He pauses.

“Normally we save this for later in the cycle, once a crew has been selected, but it’s felt by myself, civilian contractors, and the rest of the staff in the program that this is an opportunity we’d best not pass up. Your ship weapons load will be up to you in the planning phase.” He says. “You can expect significant opposition- you ruffled a few feathers by ‘getting away’ last time. Don’t expect to do the same this time. They won’t have AWACS support, but neither will you. Any questions?”

So Merlin was correct, they're gonna push us hard this exercise.

Tempted to ask what the upper limit of aggressors this time will be, but they told us last time freely when we wouldn't normally get that intel. Least we get to pick our loadout.

“What kind of ground targets should we expect?” You ask.

“Predominantly vehicles, you’ll be supporting elements of the army’s third armored brigade combat team. They’re an armored unit, and they’ve got an attached four-witch platoon of their own. Ground strikers only, though, so don’t expect any blue air support.” He says.

“How many hostile aircraft can we expect?” Kyou asks from next to you. “And what are our primary directives? Are we to engage them before supporting the ground troops or are we to support the ground troops first?”

“We want you to prioritize engaging aircraft.” The colonel responds. “It’s not hard to bust tanks, especially not in the NTC, and we already know the LT can hit ground targets perfectly well. We want to see how you do in situations like the Battle of Berlin.”

“So we’re there to own the airspace. This is acceptable.” Kyou simplifies, looking pleased.

“Redair isn’t something you’re needing to know. But assume the air force is going to throw the book at you. Mountain Home is supposed to be providing the majority of the redair for this exercise, which means you’ll see King Raptors, Eagle-Xs, Lancers, and witches, among other aircraft. In addition, Redfor still has a few SAMs, though nothing like you encountered in your first hop. Anything else?”

[x] No, sir.

“None here, sir.” you say, and Kyou shakes her head.

“Good. You’re going to have a bit more of an audience than usual, there’s a couple IJN heads from the Kaga over to observe.” He looks at Kyou, who again nods.

“I expected as much. The captain and ship’s matron?” She asks, in almost unaccented English. You hadn’t noticed it before, but it’s kind of a surprise- her English is probably better than your Japanese.
The colonel nods. “That’s them. They’re already in ops, so you won’t be able to chat with them prior to wheels-up. Have you been briefed in on the life support shop and what’s gonna go down there?”

She nods. “I have requested a female flight surgeon.”

“Doc Kline. She’s good people, came up as a corpsman when they opened the role up to nonwitches in the ninetys. Very capable combat doc, came over to flight later.” He says. “The workup and fitting process takes about forty five minutes to an hour, so as soon as you’re done here, get moving to life support.” He turns to look at you.

“Lieutenant, you’ll need to head down to the support shops and get your final information packs from weather and conditions. Keep in mind there’s a lot more air traffic in the region because of the debates going on in San Diego. Air control should keep them well clear of the airspace above the NTC, but you’ll need to be aware for flight in and out of Miramar.”

You nod, noting it on your pad. “That’s all then. Dismissed.”

You stand to leave at the same time as Kyou. She motions for you to walk next to her on the way to the support shop. “Better photos for them.” She explains, her voice just low enough to not carry too far.

You nod at her, walking through the halls. “I’m sorry if I preempted any questions you may have had for the briefing officer.” She says as you step out into the morning light. They have explained to me at length that you are the aircraft commander and in command.”

“Better you asked than I missed it.” You say, getting a nod in return.

“I am looking forward to this.” She says, after a minute. “the Wyvern program has interested me since I was a little girl.” She smiles. “I suspect my aunt had something to do with that.”

“Jess.” It’s a statement, not a question. She nods again.

“Jessica, yes. She’s a big sister to the witches of the imperial navy.” Kyou explains. “Always there when you need her, full of energy and always wanting to help.” She smiles again. “And very blissfully unaware of social rules.”

“That sounds about like Jess.” You say- she was a visitor at a coven event, years ago, at your mother’s invitation. You’ve seen her since then, spending a few summers in Japan with her and Katsumi as their guest, but you don’t think she’s ever been back to Louisiana. You’re pretty sure she hasn’t been stateside in a few years, actually.

“She introduced me to the aircraft and your father, years ago.” She says. “There was a show at Iruma air base, and her connection to your father meant I was allowed into the cockpit of the plane.” She smiles at the memory. “I have worked for this moment ever since.”

“It’s the same for you, yes?” She asks.

[x] Mostly. I have my aunt Merlin to thank, she got me into a lot of places I wouldn’t have gotten otherwise.

“Mostly.” You admit. “I have my aunt Merlin to thank, she got me into a lot of places I wouldn’t have gotten otherwise.”

“Ah, the famous Samantha Wells.” She says, nodding. “I met her once, long ago. I doubt she’ll remember me.”

You shrug- it’s a possibility Aunt Merlin won’t remember, but it’s almost equally likely she will. Merlin’s mind is a strange thing.

“She must be working on your aircraft specially, then?” Kyou asks, and you nod. You’re not really admitting anything by it, you figure- it’s easy enough to tell on the walkaround inspection anyway. Besides, there’s better than even odds Auntie M is there, working anyway.

Kyou looks pleased. “That seems to be quite an honor. She is a world-renowned genius.”

“She enjoys her work.” You respond, trying to not give that much away just yet- there’s no assurances that you’ll be flying with Kyou ever again. Still, the Japanese witch smiles, pausing briefly as you open the door to the support shop for her.

“So I have been told.” She says, looking at the signs and frowning. “There isn’t a female changing room?”

You shake your head. “Locker rooms are down that way, one of them is for witches.” you say, pointing. “The life support shop has got it’s own locker room for you guys though.”

She nods. “I assume men aren’t allowed in?”

You shake your head. “Not while it’s in use or we’re in flight, no.” You say. “You still have to use the showers off the other locker room, but they’ll post someone to guard it if you’re worried about anyone walking in.”

She laughs at that. “There is very little privacy at the naval academy at Kure.” She says with a light grin. “But I do have some rules I must follow, owing to my family. It wouldn’t do for a camera phone image of me in the shower to appear on the internet, for example.”

You nod, understanding the feeling completely.

“I must ask.” She says, pausing at the door to the female side of the life support shop, her hand on the handle. “Will I have a chance to meet your Aunt Wells?”

Might be able to unless Lotus arrives the next day. Well, maybe we can bring both then? Hah...

We first need to get through the exercise, but this upcoming dinner is probably gonna be a big PR show of cooperation. It seems like the Kaga made port since the Captain's attending. With how high-profile it might be, Merlin might show up in a representative role for Chance-Vought.

I'm sure the IJN bigwigs are gonna be asking "Wyverns when?" while they're here since they really want to add it to their roster. Doubly so with how everyone's expecting shit to go down in the Pacific anytime soon.

You guys think they'll pit more than a squadron against us?
>>
>>3367179
Considering they want to see how we handle a Battle of Berlin like situation it'll probably be a full strength squadron. The fact we're going up against King Raptors and Witches along with F-15Xs and presumably B-1Rs spamming missiles, just like Auntie M's favorite chinese cartoons, make up for the actual numbers.

>>3365754
>They won’t have AWACS support, but neither will you
Somehow overlooked this last night but don't Raptors work fairly well as mini-AWACS? It's not like they'll be tracking many targets in this situation.
>>
>>3367230
>Somehow overlooked this last night but don't Raptors work fairly well as mini-AWACS?
Yes, meaning those B-1Rs can just hang back at the far end of the combat zone, waiting for the Raptors to get a lock. The line was more to mean that they will be dependent on on-board radars.
>>
>>3367241
Ah, makes sense.
>>
>>3367241
I'm expecting Raptors, Eagle-Xs, Lightnings, B-1Rs and witches. So we should be expecting to never be free from a radar lock. Priority should probably go to knocking out the raptors and the witches, followed by the Lightnings and Eagle-Xs, and then the Lancers and SAMs.
>>
>>3367264
Don't forget we're expected to assist the ground ops to some extent as well as all the redair.
>>
>>3367268
If we get an opportunity to assist ground ops I'll be shocked. We're going to be the only plane up there, so they're gonna be all over us like white on rice. There were six REDAIR assets in the first mission plus multiple SAM sites, I'm thinking there are probably gonna be at least two or three times that many, especially if they're trying to recreate Berlin as a training exercise.
>>
>>3367230
Berlin IIRC was also a partial bomber interception mission on top of air superiority. While we might need to give the armored force on the ground a hand, we'll probably need to intercept those Lancers too if they aren't chucking at us from long range.

>>3367241
Sounds like we should prioritize the King Raptors from the get-go then.
>>
>>3367282
I'm torn between King Raptors and Witches honestly. Witches are going to be the bigger problem in the inevitable dogfight this is going to become, but leaving those Raptors up to get a radar lock is gonna fuck us in the long term.
>>
>>3367264

Don't forget the Whiskey Lancers!
>>
Wait a minute, why do F-15Xs even exist here? They're a 2018 design to push the F-15E back into the air superiority role since the F-22 production line is gone. And possibly a result of corruption from having a Boeing exec as deputy SecDef. This universe didn't have that happen.
>>
>>3367310
if the F-15X and AX are the result of corruption, its the most efficient and benign corruption to ever exist, and besides it means we can mount 22 AMRAAMS ON A PLANE DATALINKED TO F-35S AND RAPTORS HOLY FUCK WE ACE COMBAT

>>
>>3367303
Yeah. I think the radar locks should go first like >>3367330 said. That way we won't be facing a more accurate shots or long distance shots from SAMs and the Lancers if they're packed for AA work. Though they're Raptors, they aren't as maneuverable as witches are. Witches will be next on our priorities once we aren't painted for everyone.

You know, I feel some people are forgetting that Merlin said we were better then Frank at comparable flight times on the Wyvern. We're not just gonna be tanking hits. Combine that maneuvering with Kyou's shield, the aggressors will be in for a fun time.
>>
>>3367381
>Merlin said we were better then Frank at comparable flight times on the Wyvern.
>comparable
Frank wasn't green at the start of '89, and he had a lot more stick time in the Wyvern before Berlin.

Also, I'm generally suspicious of that statement. Completely green pilot using unfamiliar control scheme in new plane is better than an experienced pilot?
>>
>>3367381

Even though, in setting, the drawdowns never really happened, there's still a limit to how much money the branches get, and the USAF was going to run into an airframe gap with their funding- they simply couldn't afford the F-35 and F-22 program, and the B-1R/W program, and their own superfighter program at the rate they wanted without shrinking their air superiority force unacceptably. The F-15X program was developed as a stopgap, in effect- it's a way to modernize a known airframe to cover a gap while King Raptors and F-35s hit squadron service. In addition, it's a good project for senators- Having three production lines (And a factory modification line for the F-15 fleet that's still in good enough shape for conversion) means more jobs to talk about on the campaign trail than just 2.

[x] I’m sure you will, probably before our flight.

You smile a little, knowing that Merlin is probably on the tarmac or in your jet, even now, doing last minute adjustments to it. “I’m sure you will.” you say. “Probably before our flight.”

She smiles. “Excellent. I will look forward to it then.” She says, and steps inside the room, the door closing behind her. For a brief second, you get a look at the room beyond, and the doctor in uniform pulling on a pair of examination gloves. You head into the locker room as soon as the door closes, pulling a fresh flight suit from yours and changing quickly. As you do, it strikes you how odd this one locker room is- there’s room in here for thirty or forty people, but it’s reserved for test and training, which, these days, means pretty much just the wyvern program.

You don’t dwell on it much, instead closing and re-locking your gear locker and turning back to the cage, where you’ll pull your survival vest, improved g-suit, and helmet. Your helmet, especially, is considered a controlled item- if it’s not in the cage, it’s signed for, and only you’ve got the authority to pull it out otherwise. Even the base’s lead tech has to work on it in the maintenance room behind the locked door there- kind of like an armory, you think. Still, you inspect it before signing for it, looking for any issues. Other than how plain it is, due to tradition stating you can’t have it painted till after you officially complete your workup phase here, there’s no issues.

Packing it in it’s protective bag, along with a new issued pair of gloves and a replacement thighboard- which seems positively archaic, everything considered, you shrug into the vest and get help yanking it tight around your chest. From there you leave the issue cage and head over to meteorology. That peculiar low is still lurking off the coast, but the cloud deck today shouldn’t be an issue over the national training center, with the weathermen predicting nothing but scattered and light cirrus clouds up around thirty thousand feet. Nothing to hide in, you note.

After that, there’s nothing to do but wait for Kyou. It takes another twenty minutes after you’re ready before she emerges from the female changing room in the long-sleeved and gloved variant of the wyvern flight suit. She doesn’t look quite as embarrassed as Danielle did, but there’s definite lingering traces of the emotion in her gait. She nods to you as you stand up off the wooden bench you’d been occupying, grabbing your bag.

The crew van is sitting on the pad behind the building, waiting to drive you the short distance over to your wyvern. True to form, you make out Merlin walking along the spine of your wyvern as you round the corner of the line of hangars, stopping well back as an air marshal moves a pair of tomcats out to the taxiway. Still, you can hear Kyou’s breath catch for an instant as she sees it with her own eyes for the first time.

You can’t see anything different as you climb out of the old blue van, and Merlin doesn’t see you quite yet, her back turned as she examines something with the chief.

“Is that- “Kyou starts

[x] Here, let’s get someone to call her down.

You nod. “Here, let’s get someone to call her down.” You say, approaching the jet. True to form, one of the ground crew sees you approaching and calls up. Merlin looks over at the two of you and even from here you can see her smile as she skitters her way down the fuselage and jumps off the wing to the ground. She’s bareleg again today- very unusual for her to go this many days in a row, you think, though you suppose it’s entirely explainable by the work she’s been doing on your fighter.

“Good morning M-morgan!” She greets you, stopping just short of a hug. “They’re ready to upload w-weapons simulators for you when you decide what you w-want to carry. We’ve set up t-two packages for you, based on the m-mission details.”

You nod. “Aunt, I’d like you to meet-”

“T-The princess Kyou.” Merlin says in perfect Japanese with a smile and a bow to the other witch. “I-I remember you. Iruma a-airbase, wasn’t it?”

Kyou returns the bow, looking a little surprised. “I didn’t expect you to remember, ma’am.” She says.

Merlin smiles- one of her honest, genuine smiles that you rarely see her use in public. “I-it’s not everyday the imperial princess t-tells you o-one day she’ll be as good as you.” She responds.

Kyou nods, looking like she’s very vaguely embarrassed by the incident- which you’re guessing amounts to an infrared flush to anyone else. Still, Merlin smiles. “W-why don’t we get John down and we c-can get the weapons load started.”

“Won’t that take hours?” Kyou asks. Merlin shakes her head with a light laugh.

“Oh n-no. Maybe fifteen minutes. Y-you’ll understand once we’ve got it all started u-up.” She says. “The self diagnostic i-is incredible.” She half turns and waves up to the Chief, who starts down- normally, you note, using the access ladder set up on the side of the aircraft.

1/2
>>
“If I jumped down like you, ma’am, I’d blow my knees all to hell.” He grumps at Merlin as he approaches. “I don’t see how you do it.”

“I-I’m not built like a f-fridge.” Merlin responds, smiling up at him. “A-and I’m a witch. M-magic”

“Hmph.” John responds. “Morning, sir, ma’am.” He says, nodding to you and Kyou. Kyou, for her part returns the nod respectfully, just before you. You’re still not quite sure what to make of the chief- Merlin clearly gets along with him well enough, but he seems like he only just grudgingly tolerates you. Still, you suppose if Merlin likes him, you can deal with him while you’re here.

“We got called down to let us know that you weren’t going back to the NTTR this morning and to lay out all the fast toys for you to take a look at. We’ve set up two packages based on what they told us and around typical loading for a mission like this.”

He says the last looking down at Merlin, who frowns a little. “T-typical for now.” She corrects.

John sighs- you suspect this may have been an ongoing discussion. “Your first load is all air-to-air all the time. The brass still wants to see how you turn and burn, so there’s no AMRAAMS or other BVR, but you’ll have thirty two short range dogfighting missiles, mix of Sidewinders and agiles. The other load swaps a center bay agile set for six SDBs, for taking out armor or buildings or whatever the army wants. We’d also swap the gun loads, air to air is all APEX all the time, the air to ground partial load would sub in tungsten carbide core penetrators on your outboard guns.”

“If I may,” Kyou offers. “I believe we should use the mixed loading. It is your decision, but I believe the flexibility will be an advantage.”

[] I agree, we’ll take the mixed load.

As much as I want to take the full air-to-air loadout, we're expected to gain air superiority AND still support the ground units.
>>
Are we packing AIM-9Xs? Because while they can do light A2G, I'd rather have SDBs if we're called to do air support than to waste a sidewinder call for little to no effect.
Unless use them to knock out a Lancer or some meme tier shit.

>>

Is this even a question? Why the heck would we take a pure A2A load for a mission that specifically involves ground support?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GBU-39_Small_Diameter_Bomb

Taking SDBs would let us splash some targets at ranges they would need a telescope to see us instead of being forced to descend to low altitude where the enemy SAMs and redfor can shit all over us. They didn't specify exactly what kind of vehicles the enemy has so it's better to take the tungsten and not need it than embarrass ourselves if we show up with pure APEX and it does nothing, and that's *if* if we manage to secure the airspace in the first place. Tungsten will kill planes and witches just as dead too. I'm assuming we have sub core API rounds like the A-10 and not discarding sabot as depicted in the picture. Plane's can't use sabot rounds without FODing themselves in the face.
>>
>>3368141

You vastly overestimate how much ammo an aircraft cannon has.
The vaunted A-10, the plane that was built around its gun, only holds 1,150 rounds.
>>
>>3368152
I wasn't entirely sure whether the Lima or Mike would be used, although the Agile being present is surprising, given that it's basically a thiccer Sidewinder after the latter got upgraded for all aspect.

>>3368160
The Wyvern's guns also seem optimized for weight of fire over ammo capacity as well given how many it has, likely to kill hostile witches and sparkle birds quickly.

>>3368169
I can't remember if it's been mentioned how much ammo we have. The (old) F-22 Raptors carry 480 20mm rounds, hornets carry 412 and the tomcat has a whopping 675. Most aircraft only carry 150-200 or even less and make up for it with 27mm or 30mm calibre rounds that hit harder. The updated F-22s have a quad barrel 25mm gatling like us, the same GAU-22 used by the F-35A (who carries 180 rounds). Compared to the 20mm it shoots about half as fast, but fires shells with twice the weight.

Fighters can be reasonably expected to shoot each other down with just a single cannon and we have FOUR of them. Even if we load the outer guns with tungsten we won't need them to splash raptors and eagles, we would only need to shoot all 4 if we engage a witch. That leaves us with ~400 tungsten rounds to party with. But we won't be in position to strafe ground targets unless we clear the air first, (or are dumb enough to leave ourselves with no other option). If we DO clear the air we can make a turkey shoot out of anything that's left after the 6 SDBs, the only thing they would have to oppose us is SAMs and SPAAGs.

[x] I agree, we’ll take the mixed load.

You nod. “I agree. We’ll take the mixed load.” you say.

“Alright. I’ll get the boys moving on it.” the chief says, turning and already baking a few orders, getting a flurry of activity in short order.

“Here, let’s g-get out of the way.” Merlin says, gently placing a hand on your elbow and steering you towards the nose of the wyvern and out of the way of the loading crew. “H-have they told you what they expect?”

You nod. “We’re to establish complete control of the airspace over the national training center in conjunction with an ongoing army exercise.”

Merlin nods. “G-good. They told us y-your aggressors would be out of m-mountain home. They’re a-an expeditionary wing, s-so you can expect almost everything i-in the airforce’s inventory except A-10s a-and F-16s”

“Is this kind of joint exercise common?” Kyou asks. “I know the imperial army prefers to do joint training when they can, but this seems different.”

Merlin nods. “I-it is. Normally this kind of t-thing would have been saved f-for later in the cycle. I-I’m sorry that no one told you, b-but you can imagine t-there’s some pressure t-to see what Morgan can do.”

Kyou grins- it’s a predator’s grin, a challenge. “Then I look forward to showing them what we are capable of.” She says with a glance your way. There’s a definite fire in her eyes- not the hard professionalism of Danielle, but a burning desire to prove herself.

Merlin, for her part, doesn’t seem to see it. At least, you think, she doesn’t comment on it if she does. She turns to watch the ordinance crew finishing their loading- for the most part, captive air simulators are much easier to load than the ground simulators or the real thing. “M-morgan, if you want t-to do your inspection, I’ll w-wait here.” She says.

You nod, pausing when Kyou moves to follow you. “Y-you don’t have to do that.” Merlin tells her. “U-usually you’ll want to be b-bringing the AI out of standby while he does t-the walkaround inspection.”

Kyou hesitates for a second. “How long will that process take?” She asks.

Merlin shakes her head. “N-not long, but it h-helps...” she pauses, blushing lightly. “A-ah. Adjust?”

Kyou, for her part, looks stoic. You’re not sure what they’re talking about, but she shakes her head. “I will deal with any discomfort.” She responds, getting a nod from your Aunt. “After you, Lieutenant.” She says, turning back to you. “I intend to learn how to do this myself, eventually.”

You don’t comment, instead narrating the walkaround process- noticing only once the Public relations people taking pictures as you round the trailing edge of the wings. “It gets easier to ignore them.” Kyou says, not even looking at the knot of photographers.

The Bayou coven probably kept the big stations out of our hair for the most part, if they ever bothered (given we're the only son of a major war hero who ended up with three wives, our mother not among them, there'd be more than some interest admittedly).

Thing is, most war heroes don't seem to get a whole lot of media attention unless they put themselves out there, and Fronk wasn't like that.

Sure he had three wives and a son out of wedlock, but unless someone in the family shoved it in the media's face then there probably wasn't a whole lot of coverage.

Actually, now that I (>>3368290) mentioned it, did Morgan ever get some bit of local fame for football? There had to be some sports columnist that tried to stir up debate over whether Morgan would become the black sheep and choose sports over the military.

It must have been hilarious for Frank and Ice to be interviewed for their movie though, I feel there was a great disturbance in shenanigans and thermals then...

On football, there wasn't really anything we know right now. But that does make sense. Sounded like Brigitte was worried about Morgan pushing himself there.

She LITERALLY couldn't be more honest then. Sound familiar? Hah.

Only politics I see on her now since we know both the U.S. and Jap Covens can't touch her is that the IJN REALLY want to get a hold of Wyverns of their own. Kind of understandable with China being a very angry neighbor at the moment...

I'm eager to see how she perfroms in the Valkyrie... Though the question would be if Merlin becomes our chief and when they'd be able to send her out in the field with them.

[x] Hopefully sooner rather than later.

“Hopefully sooner rather than later.” You say, looking up at the jet exhausts and looking for out of place scorch marks or heat discoloration.

Kyou follows you, a slight smile on her lips. “I’m sure they’ll lose interest soon.” She says. “I suspect they’ll only take a few pictures during dinner. I am looking forward to a chance to talk with you some.”

“Mmm.” You respond, gesturing at the ladder as you approach. “Ladies first.”

She smiles, starting up to the cockpit. Merlin, for her part, is already up there, perched on the canopy rail, her feet just dangling into the cockpit. By the time you’ve climbed up, she’s already got her head down next to Kyou, helping the princess through her startup checks.

It seems easier this time as you get all the straps threaded through correctly, checking to make sure you still have all the motion you’ll need without leaving them too loose, horror stories from flight school about cracked ribs and dislocated joints still fresh enough in your mind to ensure your attention to details.

You plug in, and there’s a faint murmur there now- the AI, you know, forming itself, starting to develop information on your own brain, how you think, what neurons fire when- mapping you mind, in a very real way. There’s a lot of voices- some of them quite prominent- that argue against this technology, claiming untold dangers inherent in advanced artificial intelligences like the ones in the wyverns, but you tend to agree with Merlin. Like anything- anyone- else, they can be good or bad, and it’s all in the people around them and how they’re taught.

You sense, more than see, the crew doing their own final checks before Kyou begins starting the monstrously powerful engines behind you, their rising whine only partly muffled as the canopy locks in place.

“We’re on internal.” Kyou says, at the same time the AI’s identification flashes across your vision- you wipe it away with a thought and get the nonverbal equivalent of an ‘ok’ from the machine- it won’t bother you with that again. “External lines pulled. We’re-” She pauses. “Clear to roll, follow the marshal to the taxiway, then to runway two-four romeo.”

1/2
>>
As before, there’s aircraft ahead of you- in this case, a learjet landing. You blink when you see it- at first with the sensor suite of the wyvern, the electro-optical sensor cluster mounted on near the shoulder bays, then with your unaided eyes, tracking it all the way down. You wonder who that is- brass, no doubt. You push it out of the way. “We’re clear.” Kyou calls. “Proceed to the runway and hold.”

You roll forward, pivoting on the nosewheel as the lear clears the runway. “Clear for takeoff, runway two-four romeo.” She calls. “Climb to fifteen hundred and turn north over the ocean.”

The engines spool up with a smooth whine that transitions into a scream, then a roar as the afterburners start dumping raw fuel into the exhaust, reheating it. The sudden Gs as you release the wheelbrakes slams you back into the too-thin seat cushion as you stop just short of the WEP. The takeoff roll itself is almost criminally short, given the runway in front of you- you still had miles, it seems like.

“Woo!” Kyou calls, probably accidentally hot micing- her voice is businesslike when she speaks again, a second later. “Gear is up and locked, systems are green across the board. I have no connectivity, all weapons showing stowed and safe.”

It almost sounds funny to hear no connectivity on a systems green call- of course, she’s not plugged yet. “Vector to our range is coming up now, and I have the army commander on the ground on a separate channel. Do you want him on a dedicated channel now, or shall I wait?”

[] Let’s see what he can tell us. give him a dedicated channel.

[x] Let’s see what he can tell us. give him a dedicated channel.

“Spin off a dedicated channel for him.” You order. Normally, that would tell Kyou to link the ground commander in with the wyvern’s communications suite in a way that allowed you to communicate with him in the same way you would on the plane’s intercom. Of course, with Kyou unplugged, it means that she’ll still have steps to go through to talk to the man- namely, selecting his channel with a toggle on her handbar.

“Bulldog, bulldog, this is Eagle.” You call- the first time you’ve ever had to initiate air-to-ground radio contact. Part of your hindbrain wonders if the commander on the ground knows about that.

“Eagle, this is bulldog. You our promised blue air?” The man on the other end sounds harried.

“Yes, sir.” You respond.

“Glad to hear it. Redair’s been running riot all over us since we lost most of our air earlier in the cycle. How many you bringing?”

“Just one.” You respond.

“Repeat your last?” The man sounds dumbfounded. “Just one?”

“Confirm. Just one aircraft.”

“Christ.” he doesn’t sound too pleased- he wasn’t told. He probably doesn’t even know you’re technically a trainee, either. “Well, son, you better be the second coming of the butcher or you’re wasting both of our time. What airframe?”

“Wyvern, sir. I’m ten, one-zero minutes out of the range.”

He mutters something about small favors- you only just barely hear it, so no doubt he was talking to someone else nearby. “Alright, listen son. We’re trying to hold Razish now, but redair is making it impossible to shift anything without them killing it. I need you to clear the air above the town long enough for us to get moving, clear? Don’t worry about anything else, I just need you over Razish.”

[x] Understood, we’re on the way.

“Understood.” You respond, mentally taking a look at the site from a database satellite image- normally, you’d have the capacity to call for a ‘god’s eye’ regional map, provided by satellites and networked sensors, but in this instance the regional satellites aren’t open to training links- and, of course, the range’s drones aren’t either. You’re effectively on your own for sensors here- though you’ve got more than enough to find even king raptors and lightnings without too much trouble.

The tension builds as you near the NTC airspace- though it’s significantly smaller than the NTTR complex, the airspace is more heavily monitored by fixed sites, and the whole complex is heavily instrumented to aid in post-exercise training. While neither side has AWACS, there’s undoubtedly at least one range control aircraft up, especially if, as you were warned, the air force is anxious to get a kill on you.

“We’re in the chute.” Kyou warns as you cross the invisible line from the chute- controlled airspace that allows you to adopt a combat configuration from your cruising rules of flight. “I have no networked air sensors, and no networked air defense systems.”

She seems almost.. pleased by that- you’ll win by your own efforts, without any outside help. “I suggest we activate our radar.”

It’s an aggressive gamble- it’ll broadcast your presence to everyone else in the airspace, and no doubt draw them to you, but at the same time, you can see what she’s driving at, you think. By doing so, you’ll immediately pull redair off the ground troops and onto yourself- there’s no way they’ll be able to ignore the distinct signature of a wyvern radar powering up. You’ll give away the advantage of surprise, but you’ll also have an immediate impact on the fight.

[] Agreed. Light us up, let’s pull them off the poor tankers.

Redfor has been trying to kill those tanks in *uncontested* airspace for who knows how long, if they're still alive they can survive another minute.

Question is who we want to bounce first. If we kill some raptors/lightnings in the first wave it will make the resulting air battle easier. On the other hand if we splash all of the ground attackers bluefor will have nothing to worry about for the rest of the scenario. Alternately we could try to bag a witch and make both of those groups shit their pants.

[x] Negative- the army’s been doing fine without us so far, a minute more won’t make a difference.

“Negative.” you respond- your passive systems, the IRST and EOTS first among them, mean that you’ll see them before they see you anyway, though it will narrow the range between you at first detection. It’s not a big deal- you’re loaded for purely dogfighting anyway, but it’ll mean anything joining the fight will be able to get closer, too. The trade off is, nothing with BVR is going to be able to shoot into a dogfight- even the best AMRAAMs are too dangerous to friendly aircraft in furballs.

“But- “ Kyou pauses. “Keeping the set cold.” She confirms, after a split second. “Weapons coming up now. Passive sensors up and green.”

The IRST is already tracking a lot of heat over the target area- at least four aircraft, possibly more. You can see the dust cloud from maneuvering ground vehicles too, so whatever’s going on, it’s probably fairly large, battalion sized engagement or longer.

“Bandits!” Kyou calls at the same time the AI chimes a warning pulse at you. “I’m counting Six. four high, rwo low. Raptors up high, looks F-15s down low.” She calls. The AI agrees with her assessment- there’s two pairs of king raptors up ‘high’- closer to ten thousand feet- and then two eagles making alternating attack runs down low, in the three thousand foot range. They’ve got to be Strike eagle models- probably loaded with bombs, but no less dangerous for it. Of course, they’re a negligible threat paired against the king raptors to you, but killing them first removes any air pressure the army’s feeling.

[] They’ll be forced off ground attack when we hit the raptors anyway, go for the high birds first!
[] I think splashing two aircraft is a good announcement that we’re here- go for the eagles first.

[x] They’ll be forced off ground attack when we hit the raptors anyway, go for the high birds first!

While the two eagles are no doubt causing problems for the ground troops, they’re almost no threat to you- and even if they were, the raptors on a high perch represent a worse threat. Only four of them seems a fair few less than you were expecting- then again, the rest of the red air force is probably waiting for you to show up.

Even so, it’ll have to be a popup attack- you simply don’t have the time to get above the raptors. Fortunately, while they’re not blind below, equipped as they are with the fused sensor cluster on the underside of the fuselage, they’re not as aware as you are, either- they don’t have an AI to alert them to your presence.

The Wyvern shudders through it’s speed transition as you pass mach, the outer part of your compound forward swept wings tucking in, the ships AI fighting the sudden changes in the airflow around you to keep you straight and level as they do. That transition, your aunt has told you, gave the early fly by wire systems absolute fits, and it wasn’t until the introduction of the first AIs and the MIU links that the problem was solved- even VDNI couldn’t react fast enough to the sudden turbulence.

Now streaking across the desert a scant few hundred feet up, you can see the two raptors that are your targets- the other two are about ten miles distant- close enough to be dangerous, too far away to get in the same attack. They’ll be able to join in the dogfight almost right away, but you’re more worried about what else is out there that you don’t see.

You arc up off the desert sand like a SAM blasting off it’s rail, already seeking a heater lock on the trailing raptor as you do- you can almost feel the panic as the two aircraft nose over, afterburner plumes thundering out of their thrust vectoring nozzles as they try to evade. It barely matters to a wyvern, of course- you can track them even as you rotate out of the climb and rapidly pitch down, the sudden nausea of the rapid change in G-forces suppressed by the AI. The lead aircraft of the pair splits to the south, his wingman following for a split second before he rolls wings level and range control confirms a heater kill.

1/2
>>
The advantage of surprise now gone, though, you’ve got a tough call. The eagles, predictably enough, have gotten low to the desert sands themselves, pushing east, away from you, looking for the range exit, while the three raptors’ sensors have all gone active- no doubt linking back with heavier support and broadcasting your position for everyone in the area.

“More bandits!” Kyou calls. “Witches! two of them, they were behind the mountains!”

You flick your attention in their direction- she had them up on your sensor display as soon as she called it, almost as fast as she could have had she been plugged. “We should go after them, first!” She warns. “Without them the rest of these planes are no threat.” There’s almost a feral quality to her voice- she’s calling them out because she sees them as the biggest, toughest threat- like a warrior calling a foe out for a duel, you realize. She’s dismissing the raptors- and to be fair, you did splash one almost too quickly for him to even react- but they’ve still got datalinks back to anything else in the air, and the witches don’t- nor do they have missiles or radar or any of a dozen other things to track you, other than their eyes.

[] She’s right- we down them, the rest of these things are easy targets.
[] We can out run them easily, and they’re nowhere near as big a threat as that datalink.

>>
>>3371103

>>
Seems like we need to tame the princess a bit. Splashing the witches first would definitely demoralize the enemy but engaging them now would mean leaving the raptors alive and painting us for all to see, including the witches. If we kill the raptors it shuts down their sensor net and lets us engage the witches on equal footing, plus those eagles if they're dumb enough to engage us too.
>>
>>3371123
Next time we do this we should have a quick chat before we engage about what our general strategy is - we did that with Danielle but not Kyou
>>
>>3371116
I'm willing to bet that Whiskey Lancers are B-1s with a witch WSO. Though throwing railguns into the mix would make them deadly as sin. Wyverns with railguns are cancer enough in AC7, and a B-1 has a lot more room for an even bigger gun (especially considering that you can remove the divider between the forwards two bomb bays).

[x] We can out run them easily, and they’re nowhere near as big a threat as that datalink.

“We can out run them, I’m more worried about those raptors” You respond, pulling the wyvern around to regain the second raptor from the pair you attacked.

There a brief second where you think you hear something snarled back- but it’s gone almost as soon as it happens. “Understood.” Kyou responds, her voice lacking some of the excitement from earlier, but still animated, even through the intercom.

The second Raptor driver’s not bad- of course, even the king raptor isn’t a match for a wyvern, especially with the AI driving most of the math and reactions- it’s still your decision making process, but you know exactly how to counter every single move he’s making to try to throw you. He goes vertical for a second, and you see it exactly for what it is- he’s trying a cobra, which, one on one, would be dangerous, but here, it leaves you open to his backup, still closing fast.

Still, against a drake- or anything with a helmet mounted cuing and launch system- it’s basically suicide. A sidewinder claims the kill even as you roll away from him- though you’re shocked when Kyou’s shield, a brilliant, blinding red and white bubble flares to life around you. “Taking fire!” She calls.

You see the culprits as soon as she does- the witches have closed already. One of them, the leader, you suspect, Has an XM8- where she got that, you have no clue, while her partner is carrying a light fifty- which probably hits like a tank cannon. Even as you watch, she hammers another round into Kyou’s shield, which flares just long enough to send the signal to the test and training center that the shot would have been defeated.

She laughs from behind you, a wild, crazed thing. “I had no idea they were so weak!” She yells, the adrenaline clear in her voice now. “They are beneath us! We should-” She cuts herself off as her shield flares incredibly brightly, shimmering for a second at a point of impact.

“Now there’s a challenge!” She calls. “EML armed opponents, two of them!”

You take a split second to look at the incoming threat- and it’s far more than the EML equipped opponents- it’s a pair of B-1Ws, the telltale glow of their charging railguns visible, even from here. There’s additional contacts in with them- more raptors, you’re sure, at least six. It’s starting to feel a bit busy here- though Kyou, in the back, sounds utterly enthralled by the prospect. “Finally!” She cries.

[] Nothing for it then- Those whiskey lancers have to go.

The Whiskeys can't hit us at point blank with those guns, especially if we're above them, and we have no idea where the Romeos are if they're present. So the witches and raptors are currently the greater threat.

Also.

Networked, Macross-tier missile spam. The EMLs need to be manually aimed, missiles from any B1Rs or 15Xs on station do not.

She's likely used to being virtually invincible due to her shield. Ghost implied that her shield is the strongest known, and proved as much with that EML shot we got hit by, which most Witches, even Merlin probably, couldn't stop.

As such, her arrogance has likely been fed by that fact, something which needs to be toned the fuck back.

Also I just thought that if someone put the Sakamotospawn in one of those B-1Ws, her shots would probably hit the Wing Zero's Twin Buster Rifle.

I also feel like when she's in the air is the only time she can just be herself, with no reporters watching her every action, no danger of proving an embarassment to her family, et cetera. So she's probably got a LOT of bottled up emotion that she's letting loose this way. It's unhealthy as all fuck, but it's understandable, and as a love interest it makes her all the more compelling.

That's a good point. Ignoring their hitting power, I'd still like to take them down ASAP while they're grouped up. If they're smart they'll separate when we get stuck in to make it a bit more of a chore to down them both.

While there might be more, it's possible these Lancers might just be the only long distance slingers here since the brass wants to see our dogfighting skills. Would explain the copious amounts of Raptors present...

>>
>>3371534
It comes from Kantai Collection. "Poi" is the verbal tic of the destroyer Yuudachi, whose second remodel is designed to make her look like a mad dog based on her record at the First Battle of Guadalcanal. The pictures Ghost has been using for Kyou is the light cruiser Yahagi in swimsuits. In our timeline, Yahagi's claim to fame is being one of the escorts for Yamato during Operation Ten-Go, where the battleship was supposed to beach herself on Okinawa. It was the last action of the Imperial Japanese Navy in WWII, and was a failure because most of the ships were sunk by aircraft before they got within firing range of the island. Yahagi took more hits to sink than her sisters Agano and Noshiro combined.

[x] Get the raptors first- they’re the real danger.

While the wild excitement coming from behind you is almost infections, you were raised by an infamous commando and the best fighter driver of the era, and are aided by a monstrously powerful AI that’s starting to realize what it can do- you can almost feel time slow down around you as it starts to add it’s massive computing power to your own thought processes. Kyou may want to dive right into the furball and go for the throat, but you take stock in less than a heatrbeat- eight king raptors, two witches, and two whiskey lancers. Even for a drake, it’s getting a little hot up here. Still, your conclusion echos what she’s no doubt urging from behind you- pile in and go for the throat.

You punch the throttles into their maximum war emergency power setting without even a whisper of complaint from Kyou behind you as the massive Pratt and Whitney turbofans behind you start sucking fuel from the tanks and energy from the accumulator focii at an astonishing rate- dozens of pounds of jet fuel gone in a second.

The acceleration should punch you back into your seat- instead your IAS simply jumps to mach 3.31 and pegs there- there’s no acceleration at all, and the miles to wind down dizzingly- in thirty seconds, you’ll be on top of them, though you’ll be in missile range long before that.

Of course, they have missiles too- and the Lancer’s railguns muzzles glow threateningly, the runic circle around them speaking to their witch crew’s powers. Of course, at this speed, there’s little you can do to evade- though, with railguns, there’s little you need to do, since their own projectile speed precludes any kind of guidance systems. There’s no visual tell to them of course- almost no warning for when a slug is going to go screaming through the sky.

The raptors begin breaking to engage as the lancers start turning away- while their firepower is incredible, they’re not built to try and tangle with a fighter like the wyvern in close, and they’re going to work to keep themselves at range. You can see their afterburners light as they bank away, diving to separate from the fight.

The raptors, meanwhile, scatter in pairs- they’re trying to keep you moving enough that you can’t gain position on any of them long enough to start shooting. It might work against wyverns sometimes, but in this case, it won’t.

“If you unlock the missiles I can queue them up and fire them!” Kyou calls. “We can kill more of them quicker!”

She’s got a point- but doing so may mean your reserves deplete a lot quicker, especially if she takes marginal shots or doesn’t use any kind of self-control... which she may not, you’re afraid.

[] Unlock the fire controls- she’s got enough of a point that it’s worth the risk.
[] Leave them locked to your trigger- she’s got other things she needs to worry about.

She may have bloodlust but she also aced SIO school, so I'm sure we won't do anything dumb.

We haven't seen any Eagle X's yet if there are any, just the E's. If anything, I'd worry about them going back to hit the ground forces while we're busy. Though, seemed iike they decided to nope it out of here.

All the Colonel listed were the possible types of aircraft we'd face out here. Like I said before, if they're expecting to see how we do in a dogfight, makes sense for them to throw only a few long range craft and fill the rest of the aggressor numbers with the most agile craft they could.

[x] Unlock the fire controls- she’s got enough of a point that it’s worth the risk.

As wild as she seems to be, she’s got an excellent point- and with her own helmet mounted display, even though she’ll have the extra step of having to pull a trigger, she can send agiles even at targets behind you.

“Unlocked. Your trigger is hot.” You respond- and are immediately rewarded with two agiles launching from your shoulder bays, each rocketing at a different raptor- both of whom roll wings level a second later and climb away from the fight, dead. The next, however, is a clean miss- launched in a bad position, the agile tries gamely, but the raptor is able to evade it. Still, it forces him away and off for a second- and with the numbers a bit more even, that’s worth the missile to you.

The five remaining on you for the moment are laboring to keep you turning- and they’re struggling to do so, comprehensively outperformed, even with their numbers advantage, by the wyvern. Typical defense is to adopt a Thatch weave, using wing pairs to try and break a wyvern away by threatening guns- most wyvern pilots, even with witches in the back seat, look to avoid fire as much as possible.

Of course, you can’t imagine most wyvern pilots are used to flying with a witch like Kyou. “Stay on them!” She yells, her voice almost a snarl- almost an order, but not quite. “Their guns are no threat to me!”

[] She’s right- you’ve got a lot of targets to hit, and getting them down fast is the best option here.
[] No, play it safe- you’ve got time, no sense in having her cover damage she doesn’t need to.

I'd rather take some cannon than a railgun. Every second in this fight allows the Lancers to get further away and reposition for more railgun shots.

I get where you're coming from but if we were flying with any other witch we might have been dead the moment the railgun hit us. They almost certainly tailored this mission for both of our talents and so far it's looking like they underestimated her raw power.

I'm pretty sure we're not supposed to win this, these introductory flights aren't just for training new wyvern pilots, they are also a confidence booster to show witches that wyverns *can* be beaten. But we threw that out the window on our first mission when we splashed the objective, squashed one witch like a bug and cheesed it before they could catch us.

So odds are they will just keep piling on the ridiculous odds until we break, this is a situation that calls for aggression. We need to smack the enemy down fast and hard and keep ahead of their expectations, by the time they realize this isn't working and they need to up their game it will be too late.
>>
>>3373987
>but if we were flying with any other witch we might have been dead the moment the railgun hit us.
I'm not worried about her powerlevel, she's got power in spades. I'm worried about her completely unrestrained aggression. This mission does call for aggression to some extent, but hotheadedness is antithesis to staying aware and alive. It doesn't matter that she can tank so much; better to spend that on offense than waste it begin reckless.

>this is a situation that calls for aggression.
Her aggression isn't due to need, it's due to want and thirst and looking down on our opponents. I can't trust any of her recommendations while she's worked up like this. Is she even watching her radar properly? Do we even need a backseater for more than a magic battery, seeing as the AI is already working better than she is?

I suspect she's a closet yandere

[x] She’s right- you’ve got a lot of targets to hit, and getting them down fast is the best option here.

She’s right, and this is a good time to learn about her strengths anyway- is she overestimating herself? Part of you wonders- she’s proving fantastically strong, but there’s a limit to everything, and even witches run out of strength eventually. Still, for now, she proves right- as the raptors weave back into each other, her shield stutters as simulated cannon rounds walk across it- and she sends a pair of Agiles at them as they cut back across to get you again- claiming one, and forcing the other out of the weave while your guns down one of the pair you were chasing.

The remaining fighters break away, and you move to chase, but a transmission on the GUARD channel- the emergency channel every aircraft is required to monitor at all times, cuts the move short. “All aircraft all aircraft, knock it off knock it off knock it off.” The area controller orders. “Roll wings level and cease maneuvering except to avoid collision.”

“What? What happened?” Kyou asks you- you shake your head before remembering she can’t see you.

“No idea.” You respond, looking around before you see it- there’s a puff of ugly black smoke about twenty miles away, hanging in the air like an exclamation point, a trail like blood arcing downwards towards the ground. “Someone’s in trouble.” There’s an explosion out there a second later.

“Who was that?” Kyou asks. “I’ve got- wait, I lost one of the lancers!”

“All aircraft, this exercise is over.” Range control calls. “Eagle one-one, what’s your fuel state?”

“We’ve got thirty minutes loiter.” You respond.

“Proceed to indicated grid square and give us a datalink.” the controller orders. “All other aircraft, exit the range at best speed.”

“What happened?” Kyou asks, somewhat superfluously- you have no idea. “Sensors coming up, datalink established.” You know what they’re doing- the AWACS is using your EOTS systems to search for crew and look over the crash. The lancer is a mangled mess- you hope the crew punched out in time.

You loiter for less than twenty minutes over the crash before a pair of army blackhawks swoop in, both marked with the distinct red cross in a white square of medivac aircraft. “Control, what’s the word?” You ask, against your better judgment- it’s always tense when something happens, and the air force isn’t going to be happy about the loss of a Whiskey lancer- they don’t have that many of them to begin with.

“Crew’s accounted for eagle.” They respond- a different controller this time. “Exit the range and RTB.”

“Eagle copies. Glad we could help.” You say, turning outbound. The curt response isn’t a great sign, but again- the loss of a bomber in a training exercise isn’t

The ride back is quiet, but there’s crew waiting for you on the tarmac once you’re down and guided into your spot. There’s looks of relief on their faces as you power down the jet- no doubt there’s not a lot of news out of the area, yet.

Predictably, Aunt Merlin and your sisters are there- though Danielle isn’t. You pop the canopy as your engines spool down and disengage the link, the brief headache passing through your skull in a scant second. Entirely normal, they’re part of the price, you’re told. You’re not sure if they even really bother you- they don’t last at all and it’s only when you unplug as the AI withdraws.

The tiredness, however, is new- and it takes a second to fight it off before you pull your helmet off, leaning your head back against the ejection seat and exhaling as you catch movement out in your peripheral vision. Merlin’s the first one up the access stairs as they’re rolled into place- and you recognize her frown.

“You’re going to the flight surgeon.” She orders- you recognize a command when you hear one. She turns back to Kyou. “You too.” Unusual, for her, you think as you nod. Of course, you know what she’s worried about, but you’re up and moving without assistance easily enough, stuffing your helmet in your flight bag and stretching as you stand up, looking down at the ambulance on the tarmac and sighing. You hate riding in those things.

>I'm worried about her completely unrestrained aggression
Like anons said, if we take Kyou that's something we'll need to work out with time in the quest. A big part of these SIO tests was compatibility, and her reasons for wanting to fly in the Wyvern seemed very close to ours.
Seriously, I'm finding the reversal of Frank and Merlin's personalities in combat with the both of us hilarious.
Sure, it's concerning she might disobey, but it's considered DISHONORABU for the Japanese not to follow their CO's orders. Especially since Japan still has IMPERIAL in their name settingwise. Kyou also acknowledged that we're the commander of the Wyvern, so, yeah...
It also occurs to me that since both Jess and the elder Sakamoto were instructors at the Imperial academy, Sakamoto probably just laughed off Kyou's EVERYTHING MUST DIE battle-attitude, while Jess probably thought she was just really enthusiastic. It just makes too much sense...

>Is she even watching her radar properly?
Considering she was top of the SIO classes to be sure she got into the cockpit?
Yes.
Kyou was on point when the witches showed up and didn't just fire everything like an idiot when we gave her weapon access either.
She also said she wanted to get to Merlin's level.
Kyou NEEDS to be highly competent to compete with her level.
While she doesn't have the same magic ability as Merlin, she does have similar, if not possibly more magic power to work with then what Merlin was said to have.

Unless we find out more worrying stuff about her down this testing line, she's looking like a solid pick for all that PLUS the fact that the Japanese and U.S. witch covens can't mess with her. Yeah, the fact she's high ranking to an allied nation may be a slight bother to us, but there's a good chance for more world building and more multinational squadron action.

All that aside though, I'm looking forward to testing with Lotus like you said earlier too, she seems like she'll be interesting with her test-piloting past.
Since Ana told us none of the matron favorites made our list, the only two problems I'd foresee taking her would just be that since she was primarily doing civilian work, we'd need to take some time to get her up to speed, while the other problem is her mother REEing at the branches and us for 'conscripting' her daughter even though Lotus volunteered herself to be activated for any Wyvern crew.
Ugh, Hollywood politics. Though the thought of Brigitte taking her on in a talkshow is amusing...
Anyways, maybe that jet that landed earlier as we took off had her onboard, so we'll meet her next time.

>That last spoiler
Eh, still holding out on waifuing anyone right now. We're still in the starting stages and haven't met our squadron yet.
But oh geez I can see that. Either that or she'll be easily flustered like Yahagi. Well, low chance since she's a Princess and has to have that CHARISMA, but I can dream.
>>
>>3374686
>Like anons said, if we take Kyou that's something we'll need to work out with time in the quest.
Or we could pick someone that doesn't need to be leashed in order to be effective. Maybe we could fix her, but she'll change us as well via the link, and the others look like they'll have much more subtle effects.
>A big part of these SIO tests was compatibility, and her reasons for wanting to fly in the Wyvern seemed very close to ours.
Funny, so far I consider her wildly incompatible with us in the air. She's just short of demanding we "kill 'em all", while we're cooly doing what actually needs to be done. Public persona is more compatible, but that feels like a mask, and it's the one we'll spend the most time dealing with, even if she's got another one underneath.

>Yeah, the fact she's high ranking to an allied nation may be a slight bother to us
>slight
That's my single largest concern with her. I do not want to get tangled up in japanese royalty and politics. I'd rather literally any other American for our backseater. I don't want foreign politicking grounding us. And remember, this is a permanent pick. If she quits or is grounded for any reason, we're done.
I was initially against Danielle due to preference for other powders and fear of matron interference, and I'm still not a major fan, but I'd take her over the two so far.

Here's hoping Lotus is equally interesting. It feels like anons have already made their pick. Don't lock yourselves in before you've seen all the options.

>Eh, still holding out on waifuing anyone right now.
Preach. Whoever winds up in our backseat, we don't want romance in the cockpit, that's a recipe for messiness and drama down the line. Ideally we'll be assigned and shipped out to our squad quickly after we make our pick so we don't suffer from First Girl Syndrome too much.
>>
Kyou kinda seems like the polar opposite of the cardio bun- I mean Danielle, Kyou is all business and no character outside of the plane, but inside she's a little wild, whereas Danielle is all business inside the plane, and a little wild with plenty of character outside, which I how I like em.
>>
>>3374757
>Whoever winds up in our backseat, we don't want romance in the cockpit, that's a recipe for messiness and drama down the line
Considering it sounds like the majority of Wyvern crews end up in relationships it probably hasn't been too big of a issue.

http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive/3302867/#p3338065

>And the MUI is like that, yes. It's why the Navy and Coven board put so much emphasis on making absolutely certain the aircrew isn't made up of a witch and pilot who hate each other and the selection is so tightly monitored- they can't afford a bad match. While it's not unheard of to have a situation where one or the other member of the crew has an outside relationship, it's the exception rather than the rule.
>>
>>3374757

See I don't feel that at all. It seems like we balance each other out. Morgan is calm and calculating while Kyou is all fire and flames, which if we work together can make a damn effective team composition. It probably also has a lot to do with the fact that she's just as green as we are, if not almost more so since while she's done the schools, most of any experience she has is going to be on Strikers.

>That's my single largest concern with her. I do not want to get tangled up in japanese royalty and politics. I'd rather literally any other American for our backseater.

Not gonna lie, to me this reads a lot like "I don't like interesting plot hooks." But that's my personal preference more than anything else.
>>
>>3374900

What's happening for me right now is that I can't trust her at all in regards to aggressiveness, because her answer is always going to be "we can take them!"

>Not gonna lie, to me this reads a lot like "I don't like interesting plot hooks." But that's my personal preference more than anything else.
Politics are just about the least interesting thing we could do as a fighter pilot to me. Let the hooks be related to flying planes and the primary focus of the quest, not backroom deals and diplomancy like every other PC on /qst/.

Literally all we have to do is talk about it with her. Like civilized people. Being part of a combat team like this is mostly likely new to her, and she seems level-headed enough outside of the jet.

Now I'm wondering what a B1 with railgun will look like, how large it is and whether it's underslung or over-the-shoulder like the Ace Combat Morgan.
>>
>>3376003
As the bulkhead between the two forwards bomb bays on the real-life B-1b can be moved around inside the bay, I recon that they just straight-up removed the bulkhead to convert the first two bays into a single bay. From there they would just stick the railgun into the bay. Meanwhile the rear bay probably contains either a big ass capacitor or a tank of coolant. Either would be needed to help balance the weight of the railgun itself.

Why?

It'll need to make strafing runs just so it can retract the guns for reloading. If it loiters, it'll be shot down by the enemy it isn't suppressing. Might as well use bombs in it, or call in a Spooky instead.
>>
>>3376604
My guess is it's intended as long range AtA arty, similarly to how it's being used here. Tie the enemy up with dogfighting, then put a slug through them at serious range. It would have worked on anyone except shielded craft, which we are.

Now, why they used that airframe in particular, I dunno. A converted cargo plane would be much cheaper you'd think. Stealth, speed maybe?
>>
>>3373372

Read the filename here. It's a Dreadnaught killer, bought under UNEDF contract originally, and then acquired by the USAF.
>>
>>3376728
I was referring to the image in post >>3376003, not the in-story railgun. Apparently, somebody in real life thought it was a good idea:
https://www.military.com/defensetech/2018/05/17/proposed-cannon-would-turn-b-1-bomber-gunship.html
https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/20782/boeings-been-granted-a-patent-for-turning-the-b-1b-into-a-gunship-bristling-with-cannons

Now, using a B-1 to carry a very heavy, long-range weapon like a laser or railgun makes sense. Most of the weapons mentioned in those articles, don't. They're talking about CAS (insert whining about A-10 retirement here), and we've got better airframes for that.
>>
>>3376870
Oh. Yeah that's dumb. I can see it as a missile-hauler though. Load the bitch up with AIM-120s and a launcher and have it sortie with a squadron of F-35s. Datalink radar launches for DAYS. Or develop a BVR anti-tank ASM and load it up with that. Let the troops on the ground call in fire support via datalink.
>>
>>3375634
A magic powered railgun and its associated systems, including witch-use gear, may very well cost as much as a ship while the B-1 airframe itself already has a pricetag of 400 million in 2016 dollars.
>>
>>3377363
Any modifications to the airframe, particularly strengthening to let it handle the railgun would also increase costs dramatically, especially given the low production numbers.

>What's happening for me right now is that I can't trust her at all in regards to aggressiveness, because her answer is always going to be "we can take them!"
Which is hilarious because this is basically how we played Fronk in the previous quest, but now the roles are reversed. I think we mesh together perfectly, we are methodical to a fault and she is aggressive to a fault. Combined together we keep her in check and she backs us up with raw power when we decide to let her off the leash.

So far I'm liking Kyou more than Danielle as an ideal SIO. Danielle would make a great wingwitch but I think her talents are wasted on a wyvern because SEAD work isn't what wyverns are for. Essentially what we are supposed to be is the US Navy's Motherfucking Pimp Hand that reaches out and bitch slaps entire air forces. That is what we were *supposed* to do in the first mission and what we we're in the middle of doing in the current mission before murphy's law cockblocked us. For that kind of work Kyou is perfect.

If you want to avoid politics Kyou is actually the best pick. Kyou is utterly untouchable by american and japanese matrons, of course the downside is that instead of witch politics you have to deal with princess shenanigans and everything else that entails.

On the other hand Danielle owes her career to the american coven and they will almost certainly want something in return. I would expect them to exert their influence over her as a means to get at us. Lotus is in the same boat, with additional controversy due to her mom.
>>

You mean like the sheer heart attack the entire Japanese public has when we calmly stroll into the Palace and ask for the Emperor's permission to marry his (granddaughter? daughter? neice? And is Kyou Naruhitos daughter, or one of Fumihitos?) in a blunt, American fashion?

I'm not sure. The last Emperor of Japan we know of was the Red Alert 3 Emperor/George Takei-expy in Pararescue, but since he was said to have passed away in 1998 we don't know. I'm not sure where Kyou is on the list of succession, but she'll probably answer that next time.

>The acceleration should punch you back into your seat- instead your IAS simply jumps to mach 3.31 and pegs there- there’s no acceleration at all, and the miles to wind down dizzingly

We felt the WEP when we rode with Danielle, so SOMETHING happened here.

Since Kyou's shield was said to be omnidirectional, she might be capable of reshaping it, and made us a bit more aerodynamic. Still though, that would have effected us with G's...
Maybe Ana was right, and she ALSO possesses some sort of G-working talent like Natalya.

If they switched over to the Prussian model during the Meiji Restoration like they did IRL, they'd exclude princesses but witches exist so witches may still be included?

Holy fuck, her talent is giving us a DFM button.

I don't think it's exactly that, but I definitely feel like with Kyou we can be more aggressive than we were with Danielle, simply because we can tank shots that we otherwise wouldn't be able to tank.

I was kinda bummed at the abrupt ending to Kyou's session here, but I think there's something to unpack. Not only does >>3378814 seem to hint at something on Kyou's end, we also felt that same tiredness that we're familiar with from Frank. Merlin sure noticed it. But we really didn't do much of anything too too special with the airframe. Here's the thing - Frank and Merlin both credited each other many times in '89 with holding the engine together well past failure. What if our powers are reversed from Frank's? He could hold things together on his own bird, we can affect others when we're stressed? Or both - we can act offensively and defensively? Just a bit of a showerthought, but it'd be a cool twist at least. Especially if we went with Kyou. As someone mentioned in the thread we have a bit of a role reversal from '89 in Morgan and Kyou, it'd also be interesting to have that same kind of dichotomy in Morgan and his power. We've played him objective-focused and not as eager to go off the rails to get stuck into a furball, imagine if his power actively encouraged him to be aggressive as well.

I don't think we effected the Lancers, we were focused on the Raptors. If we had some sort of machine-effecting talent on other planes, it'd have likely been on them since they had most of our attention.

Something clearly went wrong onboard that Lancer as it was hauling ass away from us on afterburner, most likely something with an engine unless something with the railgun started a fire. I'm sure that the aggressors and us will be pissed if the cause of the incident was because they were rushed in maintenance by the higherups since everyone wanted to be sure they had another Fronk on their hands.

...I'd like to think they aren't THAT incompetent though. They may have accidentally inhaled a bird while zooming off.

We're also talking about the US 'ran our birds until they started falling apart' Air Force here.

>On the other hand Danielle owes her career to the american coven and they will almost certainly want something in return. I would expect them to exert their influence over her as a means to get at us. Lotus is in the same boat, with additional controversy due to her mom.

No more than literally any American witch. And didn't we literally just get told, in character, to knock the matron plant stuff off so we can go back to having a quest?

Expecting anon to get the hint is a fool's hope.

>Hey guys remember matron plants?
>Is that guy talking about matron plants again?

>The QM just told us not to worry about matron plants why are you worrying about matron plants
>Maybe if I keep telling him to stop talking about matron plants he might get the hint and stop talking about matron plants

Okay seriously guys.

SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT GODDAMN MATRON PLANTS.

NO ONE ELSE CARES ABOUT THAT BESIDES YOU.

I was merely ambivalent about her before but I'm starting to despise Danielle because you can barely mention her name or debate her merits against other witches without provoking commentary from you snide cunts. Even the actual shadowrunners had the decency to cease shitting up the quest after people asked them to stop. And yet here you are like a festering wound that never heals because you just can't resist picking at it until it bleeds again.

YOU ARE THE ONES PERPETUATING THIS STUPID BULLSHIT.

STOP.

You are literally the one who brought it back up again after it was settled, even indirectly, so stop fucking bitching about it.

We can discuss her merits as a backseater but you literally went and brought up the same goddamn matron dealing and wheeling shit the Shadowrunners had a lot of us thinking about a run or so ago and that's exactly why you provoked a fucking response about it, nobody would've made any remark about Danielle otherwise, considering our primary focus should be on her abilities and how she behaves in combat rather than any lingering political baggage she has.

And considering literally one anon even asked why you were bringing it up should not invoke that kind of response.

Do I think Danielle is the right choice for our backseater? Not with the Mission-set we're expected to run, she'd be better off in a sparkly outfitted Growler or a pair of strikers. And the general opinion is she's better on our wing than in our back seat as far as I can tell.

Especially since I haven't seen any bashing or 'snide commentary' about debating Danielle's merits for literally the entire last run after Ghost put an end to the Shadowrun nonsense.

Should I have been as snide as I was about the Matron comment you made, definitely not, but I was kinda annoyed that YOU fucking brought it back up after pretty much everyone else assumed it was done and over with.

So, I'm genuinely curious, what exactly makes you think you have the right to just blow up at everyone over something you instigated?

No, becuase I think her picture is ugly. Ghost should have picked a better one.

Thankfully not. those tend to end up separating the conversations into two communities.

>considering our primary focus should be on her abilities and how she behaves in combat rather than any lingering political baggage she has.
I'm not touching on the rest of that, but while combat abilities should be a major focus, we also gotta be able to work with them, which means personality is a considerable factor (as they'll literally be in our head), and personal/political baggage is also considerably important because that'll affect our interactions on the ground (a significant part of total quest time).

We're picking a whole package, not just a powerset. This would be much easier if that's all it was.
>>
>>3381862
I don't mean to discount it at all, it's just my personal tiering is from most to least important, Combat Ability/How does she mesh with our mission, personal issues (given that during the abortive version we were dealing with a backseater who was having doubts about her abilities and thus affecting combat readiness), political bullcrap.

In Danielle's case the personal issues she's alluded to are far more pertinent for our decision making than whatever favor she might owe some Matron we don't care about.

>>3381457
>So, I'm genuinely curious, what exactly makes you think you have the right to just blow up at everyone over something you instigated?
>Everyone
You know exactly who you are.

>You are literally the one who brought it back up again
No. This is EXACTLY what was said:

>On the other hand Danielle owes her career to the american coven and they will almost certainly want something in return. I would expect them to exert their influence over her as a means to get at us. Lotus is in the same boat, with additional controversy due to her mom.
Translation: "Well since they're not a princess like Kyou, Danielle and Lotus went to university and will have to pay off their student loans at some point in the future, also Lotus's mom is a political activist".

This is part of a normal conversation about the merits of Kyou versus the two american witches. Notice how two other people managed to reply to that post without sperging about the fucking matron plants? They're not the ones I'm telling to shut up.

Now look at this:

>"Danielle is obviously the matron plant because a matron was reading the list and she put Danielle first that can't be a coincidence guys we saw a matron talking to Danielle before our first flight and she made Danielle our personal driver to keep an eye on us don't pick Danielle it's all a master plan to get her into our bed and make superbabies for the american covens remember everything that happened with Longstreet every matron is just a blood sucking vampire our to get our genetic material for their eugenics programs THINK OF THE CHILLUNS hurfadurfadurf".

You see this?

This is what ACTUAL shadowrunning looks like. Baseless speculation and spurious logic about tangentially connected BULLSHIT.

What pisses me off is that people like you are incapable of differentiating between the two and snidely accuse us of being one and the same. You see the words Danielle and Matron in the same post and cry wolf about the fucking matron plants falling from the skies again regardless of the original context. You are even more irritating than the shadowrunners because you can't resist talking shit about other players instead of the fictional characters the quest revolves around, and you keep coming back thread after thread like a bedbug infestation.

Just fucking stop already. I have nothing more to say.
