/qst/ - Quests

The dusty earth beneath your belly is hot and scratchy against your flesh as you crawl forward against the ridge. Your elbow comes down with a soft crunch on the shell of a crawling insect, the remains quickly shoveled into your mouth. You creep forward, your companions follow along behind you, spreading out along the ridge as the small convoy makes its way along the battered trail that passes for a road in these parts.

The dust raised from their passage alerted you to their presence, a Water Convoy headed to one of the outlying villages in the area most likely. They had been part of a larger group that had diverted earlier in the day, each section of the convoy headed to a different village or outpost. They did this to make sure that if the convoy was attacked, only one shipment would be lost and the resupply would know where to go.

You smile ferally beneath the mask that guards your face, narrowing your eyes against the harsh glare of the sun. The water convoy is around fifteen men and women, their light brown and tan robes concealing a thin layer of hide armor, the long shafted spears and curved daggers in their belt glinting in the sunlight. The laden beasts and carts that accompany them are the culprits responsible for the dust cloud, the lumbering Pack Beasts grumbling uneasily, their wide wet nostrils flaring in their bovine heads. One of the convoy guards rides ahead of the group, holding the reins to a hairless horse, the crossbow across his lap glittering with a razor sharp bolt.

You look to your companions and motion them to lay low as you watch the convoy pass below you. You're not worried at all about their weapons or training. You were in charge of this for a reason.

+10 to speech rolls

You've always had a gift for convincing others into things. Whether it was getting others to charge a caravan or outpost, threatening terrified villagers into giving up their loot or convincing someone to part with their share of the take, you've never had a hard time of it. It was easy to get this band together from your old group, the old boss leading them deeper into the desert on some foolish mission of his to find "Edun" or whatever that was. You're sure the carrion birds stripped all their bodies to the bone within a week.

The convoy below trudges by, their guttural, harsh language echoing up to your ears as they joke and talk among themselves, passing along canteens, the light sparkling off of the cool water they spill.

Its been days since you had water and that was muddy and near poisoned.

You ready yourself to call out the order to attack, all the men and women under your command readying themselves eagerly. Rusted blades and sharpened lengths of bone, clubs and axes, the odd bow or sling, they are armed... Less than expertly and you fare little better, having not had a great many options when you deserted your former group.

>What weapon do you use?

>Ripper Spear: a serrated and barbed spear with a weighted cap on its end. Excellent for ripping out innards.

>Saw-Axe:Using the blade of a old circular saw, this weapon can cleave flesh and split skulls

>Sledge: a heavy, two handed hammer that can crush bones, blades and skulls.

>Gut hooks: a pair of large, heavily curved, daggers that can slit a mans throat to the spine.

I was going to pick spears too but then I had thought about suggesting throwing spears or javelins, but I'm not sure if that would work out. Also arrows have more range.

>Ripper spear
You felt along the length of the spear, appreciating it's every curve and contour. When you reached its tip you lead your hand against it, leaving your dripping blood on the twisted metal. The shaman had taught you that absolutely everything had a spirit residing inside, weapons included. You knew your spear well enough to know that it needed an appetizer before the main course.

As you painted on the last drops of blood that your body was willing to give, your lieutenant approached you.
"Everyone is prepared to strike, what is the plan?"

Ambush, writing. I would like to add that we lead about 30 men, all armed with makeshift weapons.

"We'll be putting the old ambush spot to use. Let's go."

Your band of raiders flatten into a line formation, moving quickly and noiselessly through the terrain. Through quick glimpses you were able to get a better look at the caravan. Your earlier assessment was wrong, they had water, but that wasn't what they were carrying in the tank. What set you off was that the beast didn't look particularly strong, yet it dragged the container along with ease. Water would have weighed him down, forcing the caravaneers to whip him every once in a while. It was strange, but not enough to call off the raid.

You arrived in the old ambush spot. It was a short pass through a mass of boulder that had fallen down from the mountain. When herds of game used to migrate through this part of the waste, your people made great use of the tactical usefulness of the spot. But the gods thought they had made it too easy, and stopped sending game. Your people stubbornly hold on to the land, hoping that at some point that the gods would reimburse you for the years of empty bellies and spilled blood.

Your men filled gaps in the rocks and lay silent, only communicating through mouthed words and gargling bellies. The caravan had urched forward slowly but steadily, and you were close enough to hear their words.

"Stop the caravan, that pass is giving me a bad feeling."
He had a commanding tone to his voice, the owner of that voice was most likely the leader.
"We're already behind schedule, captain, I'd like to remind you that your pay is deducted by every pointless pitstop."
He sounded like a weasel, the kind of person that takes respect but never gives it.
"I know my trade, duke."
The beast wheezed as the caravan was called to a halt. What will you do?

Hide the men on the flanks and ask what the caravan is transporting.
Using that good 'ol charisma, maybe you can get them to give you a toll for passing through your land. No one gets hurt and your men will like you more for it

Everyone that could hear the conversation looked to you for an answer. You pondered a thousand ideas before it hit you. You quickly ripped off your mask and breathed the desert air. You stepped out into the open for the caravan to see, still carrying your spear. The entire caravan's eyes fixed on you.

"What in the hell are you doing out here making all this noise and stirring up all this dust?"

They had no words. You had put on your best civilized accent, but there's no going back.

"I could hear every one of you laughing and talking for miles, scaring away all my game. I told you last time, if you want to come through here, you either need to keep quiet or pay what you cost me today."

Hunters came through the area often enough that you knew their speech patterns. They were a part of the reason you starved. The duke was the first to speak up.

"And is this your land?"
"I took it from some inbred cannibals that live in caves. You should be thanking me that you don't have any fresh scars this fine day."
The duke did a double-take between the captain and you.
"Give him what he wants, we can't risk any more - distractions."
The captain sighed.
"What do you want? Water, money?"
"What about a part of whatever you have in that tank?"
The duke was set off by the mere mention.
"No, no, no! Anything but the tank."
"Money then."

The captain whipped the pack beasts back up and dropped you a small bag of coins as the caravan passed you. You took one look at the coins and dropped them, they had no value to you. You followed the caravan between the winding boulders. When every caravaneer was inside the trap you plunged your spear deep into the back of one of the guards. That was the signal to begin.

You pulled the spear out of the man's flesh, his entrails following suit. The rest of the guards looked at you and readied their weapons, only to be assaulted on two sides by your men. You were locked into melee with another guard when you were suddenly knocked on your back. Your chest felt strange, you looked only to see a crossbow bolt shoved through your left breast. Then you felt pain, tasting blood as you breathed out. The man you were just fighting stepped over you, and the last thing you saw was a boot crushing out your consciousness.

When you woke up it was dark and you could barely breath. You felt your chest, the bolt was gone and replaced with a bandage. You were apparently placed in the same cart as the tank. When you tried to peek over the edge a gruff voice came from the shadow across the cart,
"Don't even think about it. I don't miss twice."
A familiar crossbow pointed at you, illuminated by moonlight.

Basically, it's to say "Why should I? If you shoot me, either I die quickly and annoy you, I get wounded and get a free crossbow bolt to stab someone with, or you miss and I win a free bolt AND make you look like a tool."

"What's to stop me from risking death just so I can get that bolt, softman?"
"I would like to see you try. Even if you somehow escaped us, you would die to the wastes. With your punctured lung and empty stomach you won't make it far. Waster."
"Why keep me alive then."
"The duke's orders. Maybe he wants a new slave, maybe he wants your execution to be public."
"Where are we going?"
"To hell as far as I know."
"What about the duke, who is he?"
"I don't know."
"What's in the tank?"
"I don't know."
"You don't know much."
"Well fuck you too."

The man with the crossbow didn't want to talk anymore. The swaying of the cart and noises of the night helped to ease you into a deep sleep. In a dream, the gods spoke to you. Acknowledging your peoples suffering and sacrifice, they offered you one of their many abilities. The shaman would have told you to be wary, for demons could easily mock the voice of a god but you were desperate. What did you wish for?

Everything ok?

In a distant vision, you see your village, with a group of people at the center of it, looking at something. As you pass through the crowd, you see distraught faces looking and muttering, all in a state of mourning, for something, or someone. When you get to the middle of the group, you see a boy, limp and blue, in the arms of a tattooed woman. You hear her whispering to the boy, something old and powerful, then, as the boy gasps for air, (to the amazement of the crowd) you wake up.

You sit up, wincing from the pain of the wound, you can feel your mouth feebly open at the sight of the waterskin at the hip of the Guard,
"Any chance I could get a swig from your waterskin. Also, where's my war mask? I made that myself." The guard lifted up the waterskin and took a huge drink, spilling some down his neck and chest, he then proceeded to pass the skin to another guard, then another, then another, then another, till finally, it came to you. You were only able to gain a drop or two from the flask before emptying it, getting laughed at by the men in the process. Then a deep voice, coming from the front of the caravan commanded the men "Give that poor sod a good drink, he's no good to us dead." The men immediately stop laughing and give you a full waterskin:

You go to stand up, but find that your hand is tied to the carts side. The guard said a punctured lung, in the village that would mean death. If the grunts can’t tell you what’s going on, maybe the man in charge of them can, “thank you for the kind gesture. I’m guessing your the leader of these men?” You hear no response, “and I’m guessing that you were the one that kept me alive.” Then the man turned so that he was visible from the side of the tank, “if you don’t shut up, I’ll change my mind.” You could see the mans face now: a big scar ran across it, and his hair was gray in some places, yet he was cleaner than any man you’ve seen. He was holding the reins of the beast drawing the tank and cart. The man, now happy that you had shut up, got comfortable again. “You’re a survivor kid, and that’s always better sport.” You lie down, thinking about what this means.

You looked around to see where your equipment was and saw a (seemingly) low ranking soldier had it. After a while of giving him the stink eye, he finally saw you looking at him, and he took off the war-mask, revealing his face (you never forget a face). "What do you want, waster?" the man growled, "nothing, just my mask, and spear. This waster made the weapon you chose to arm yourself with." The man chuckled at this, "yeah, and they were the only things worth looting from your people's worthless bodies." Just as he was about to say something else, the leader commanded him to be silent: they had arrived.

In front of you were huge sandstone walls, larger than any fence or wooden palisade that you've seen from the nearby villages. The caravan was stopped by a man dressed in full scrap armor, with a crossbow in his right hand. The guard on horseback proceeded to give the man a sample of the liquid in the tank: some black molasses that made the soldier smile when rubbing it in his fingers and smelling it. The soldier gave the cart leader a nod and signaled for the doors to be open.

The inside of the mega-village was bustling with people, more than you have seen in your whole life, and they all had something to do. Then, after the leader got given some coins, one of the caravan guards untied your hand, and you

You followed the guard to a small building, that when inside, led down into an underground building. Inside you could see warriors of many types and wielding many different weapons. A large man approached the guard, saying "is he proficient in any weapon?" The guard escorting you nodded and pointed to a spear on the far side of the wall, "ah, a perfect warrior to go up against 'Bulugar the Beater.' I'll take him from here." The large man instructed you to put on a mask or helmet and grab a spear, the game will be starting soon.
