Back story:
You are Vih' Indesal, Sergeant of the Obsidian Smith's first company. After unknown centuries of service to the emperor your chapter turned it's back on the imperium and was thusly dubbed excommunicatte by the inquisition. Now striking out on your own, your chapter sails the stars with its modest fleet always teetering on the knife's edge of annihilation.

You are not alone in your struggles, your separation from the imperium of man has lead to the discovery of new friends and the forging of strong alliances. The xenos of the near extinct Ulumeathic League, owing your chapter a life debt, have sworn to service your vessels as maintenance workers. Their connection to your chapter goes deeper however.

A strong psychic link between the Ulumeathins and your chapters reclusive psykers binds the Ulumeathins hive mind together, keeping the xenos from falling to feral madness.

The Ulumeathins are not the only xenos you've ingratiated yourself to. The eldar of craftworld Iyanden who fought alongside you shoulder to shoulder forming a bulwark against the Tyranid of hive Naga stand ever ready to aid you again should the need arise.

The story so far:
After tracking an imperial distress signal to the far reaches of the Ultima Segmentum the Adeptus Astartes of the Obsidian Smith's came a upon the derelict cruiser saints mercy. Taking the lead in investigating the vessel you and three of your squad mates entered the vessel.

After making your way to the bridge you discovered that the derelict was in fact the centerpiece of an ambush set for your chapter by the Vitrian dragoons a lesser known but incredibly formidable imperial regiment.

Upon making quick work of the ships command network you and your brothers were evacuated by the rest of your squad. However it was too late to warn your chapter as the trap was sprung. The rest of the Vitrian fleet came without warning out of the warp and engaged your brothers in ship to ship combat.

Thinking on your feet you led your squad into a daring boarding action against the enemy flagship Righteous Spirit. Cracking it's hull and fighting your way to the bridge where you executed the fleets admiral and ordered his second in command to send the enemy into false route.

With the Righteous Spirit secured you and your brothers prepared the fleet to warp to a safe location, unfortunately fate is a fickle mistress and you now find yourself handling a mutiny of the surviving crew members. Worse yet you've begun to unravel a terrible conspiracy involving the forces of chaos.

And now you face down the leader of the cultists aboard the Righteous Spirit, a Sergeant of the imperial guard turned heretic. Assuming himself to have the upper hand he tries to tempt you with tthe gifts of the ruinous powers. It is time to show him what it means to be a Space Marine.
>>
The heretic stands his hand outstretched offering you a place at the side of the dark gods. You spit on his offer and ready yourself to end the wretch and his followers. The sound of whirring chain sword engine drowns out the chanting of the cultists. Moving on them you...

Breaking past the chanting guardsmen you crash into the heretical Sergeant slamming your mass into his insignifigant frame, you throw him clear across the room clear of the gellar field generator. His skull cracks against the far bulkhead with a sickening crunch that resonates across the room. He lays slumped over himself in a ragdolled mess that resembles a mass of tangled limbs more than it does a man.
With the generator safe you look about the room, the chanting ceases some of the guardsmen look at you, most seem confused a few seem enraged the rest simply moan or mumble to themselves incoherently. Two of your brothers enter through the door you came in through, you recognize them as Xipilli and Cihuatli.

Xipilli has a plasma gun so order him to vaporise the remaining guardsmen. if his Plasma gun starts to get hot or the cultists (for that is what they are) start to dart behind the gellar field then we close in and strangle them. no spilt blood. no flames of change.

After close to an hour of restraining the delirious guardsmen and throwing them in the ships holding cells you along with Cihuatli and Xipilli reconvene with the rest of your squad in the ships hangar, now emptied of prisoners. A few brothers from other squads move about the flight deck. They're aided with their various tasks by servitors and even a few guardsmen that took little issue with the ships change in command.

Topiltzin is the first to speak, "Well brother it's been an eventful few hours but I'd wager we've weathered the worst of the storm and come out unscathed." He's interrupted by Nelli who adds. "Unscathed? ambushed by an inquisitorial regiment that's already anticipated our next move and left by the rest of the chapter to fly a ship beset by chaos worshippers. That's your idea of bloody unscathed?".

You find the exchange exhausting, you block them out and review the events aboard the ship in your thoughts. The mutiny aboard the Righteaous Spirit has been dealt with, the leader of the heretics lies slain, the gellar field generator is safe from sabotage and most importantly you've gleamed a better understanding of what your chapter is up against. Soon the Righteaous Fury and the rest of the fleet will drop out of warpspace at a system it's never visited before. A system that, with luck, will be free from the prying eyes of the inquisition.

What will you do before hand, there's only enough time to take one action as you'll exit the warp soon and your superiors will no doubt expect a debrief of what's transpired aboard the vessel.

Basically, drop on a world, eat some local fauna, get information on surroundings.
Or, eat brain of local noble, get rough understanding of social and political environment that has caused you to end up there, and where he hides the key to the spire.

A tribune, HH days, Diocletian, nearly killed a young boy and girl, who were refugees, in front of their families, because they mistook him for the emperor, and he honestly thought they were making a deliberate (and insulting) jest.

Getting everyone together to give the speach is probably the best way to do it, we don't need to use the hangar for it though I'm sure a ship this big would have some sort of muster hall.
>>assess the morale
Within the muster hall of the Righteous Spirit a crowd of guardsmen is gathered in a mass. An air of anxiousness hovers above the crowd as you begin to speak from a podium atop an elevated platform.

"Men of the guard, you have been used and misled. The workings of heretical conspirators have pitted you against us. Make no mistake you were sent to die at the behest of those serving the ruinous powers."

The crowd is a mess of murmuring confusion and raucous objection. Knowing that only proof will quell their protest you activate a large series of monitors that hang about the hall. The feed of your confrontation with the traitor Sergeant plays for all to see. A silence falls over the crowd.

A familiar face steps forward, the aged commisar from the hangar speaks up. "Your point is made Space Marine, now what will you do I wonder. Perhaps you'll expect us to join you and the xenos you cavort with." He mocks you as a point to remind the guard that you and your brothers are traitors as well.

Your rebuttal is swift. "No." The commissars response is rife with animosity. "What then, will you put our regiment to the sword?" Again you tell him simply. "No." With his anger rising he asks "What then?"

You make it a point to address the crowd and not the commissar. "Of the traitors we know, we will deal those we can confirm are too far gone to be redeemed. The rest we will turn over to you, and they will be judged within whatever capacity for mercy you possess. As for your regiment, once the fleet exits the warp and we make planet fall to rearm and refuel you will have the option of staying on that world or coming with us."

The commissar scoffs and returns to the crowd. You leave your place at the podium and the crowd begins to disperse leaving the muster hall. Some stay, talking amongst themselves in small groups. Among the crowd you spot and approach.

>the ensign
You move across the hall towards the ensign who regards you with a mix of fear and contempt as you approach. You stop a few paces away and she addresses you. "Well you've done it, you've beaten us down in every sense. You routed our fleet effortlessly, killing our pride along with Admiral Sergio."

You try to interject but she continues. "You broke our resolve with your mercy when you spared what men I could rally to stand against you. I wonder do you understand traitor, what that felt like?" You shake your head. "No I don't claim to understand, but I do imagine it."

She seems irritated "Imagine all you wish but you won't know what it's like to lay down your arms for the sake of your men, how could you know?" Replying to the implications you say. "You think I don't value the lives of my brothers." She let's out a short laugh. "I'm saying surrender is impossible for you."

You think on this for a moment before she continues. "And finally you've exposed us as hypocrites, heretics accusing heretics. Our pride stricken, our resolve broken and now our faith shaken. Killing the admiral and offering us insult after insult, my regiment and I will never forgive you."

Interrupting her you remind her that she and the rest of the men are free to leave once the fleet makes planet fall. However she's not finished, "That won't be happhappening." Confused by what she means you ask her to extrapolate.

"We saw the holofeed, there are more traitors throughout the regiment as well as other regiments and systems. We can't simply go on our merry way knowing what we know. I can't promise all the men will stay and help, many are sure to believe the feed was manufactured to win us over to your cause."

She extends her hand. "I'll sway what men I can, though it pains me deeply to be forced into this arrangement." You take her much smaller hand in your massive armored gauntlet and shake it. "I can't ask you to forgive us for shaming you and your men, but I can promise you our aid in rooting out this corruption." She flashes a weak smile. "I'd have your name Astartes."

After letting go of her hand you reply. "Vih' Indesal, Sergeant of the Obsidian Smith's first company." Telling her your name you ask for hers in return. "Ensign Sterren Sergio, daughter to the late Admiral." It was answer that you expected since her reaction on the bridge. Knowing that an apology would mean nothing to her you just thank her and leave for the helm.

You watch from your view behind the helmsman as your ship comes out of the warp, stretching out in front of your view is the rest of the fleet in orbit around.

Yeah, oceans for me.
>>3365299
Yes.
Paradise worlds. They vary greatly, from places of world spanning las vegas like hives, to worlds terraformed to have the greatest natural beauty, to planets that are quiet and peaceful, that have much in common with agri-worlds and feudal-worlds.
Indeed, ocean worlds can tend to be either agri-worlds or resort worlds. However, the oceans often present particularly harsh living environments.
Many ocean-worlds are also near-to or certified death worlds also.
>>
>>3365739
But if its undeveloped it could just be a death sentence.
>>
>>3365847
That's much of the issue with Ocean worlds. That they're so difficult to meaningfully develop. Other death worlds with hazardous wildlife. They can make walls, and defensive cannons. Hard to do that underwater. Walls need to be impractically large, and visibility/range is poor. Also, when gravity is not an issue, the wildlife can grow far bigger.
Although, this does require such creatures being viable to evolve, and then preying on humans.

>>a world wrapped in rolling blue waves with little landmass save for a few scattered islands

You've seen paradise worlds in the past but the blue marble before you takes your breath away, initial projections show a wide varvariety of flora and fauna. While the world appears on no imperial records there are signs of settlements located on one of the larger islands.

The fleet has already sent in a reconnaissance force to find a suitable location for a forward operating base. The Dark Forge is on standby to enter the worlds atmosphere and set up said base. A crewman alerts you that the Dark Forge has begun hailing the bridge.

The chapter masters voice buzzes to life within the bridge. "Brother Vih'" his address is brief and informal. "I will take the Forge and establish a beachhead on the worlds largest landmass, you will take the Righteous Spirit and follow Captain Xinhua with the rest of the first company. You're to investigate an island chain on the planets southern hemisphere where we picked up readings that indicate habitation by sentient life."

You acknowledge the chapter masters instructions as the vox blinks off. You bring the ship around and form up behind the cruiser, Dragon's hoard. Hailing the vessel you are answered by captain Xinhua who says you're to make planet fall shortly. "There is much ground to cover Vih', but we don't know what to expect on the worlds surface."

You understand his implication...

"The 1st company will move as one, we can't afford the risk of splitting our forces when we know nothing of what we're walking into." Captain Xinhua agrees with your assessment and, after a few course corrections, both ships begin the process of entry to the planets atmosphere.

The Righteous Spirit rumbles and roars under the stress of breaking through layers of ozone. After a few moments the turbulence eases up and the ships retros fire, slowing your descent until the Spirit comes to a slow cruise several miles above the islands.

In the distance a great mass of rolling clouds is making it's way towards your objective. Gliding across the calm blue waters like a heavy grey sheet over a bed of blue satin. If you don't land soon your ship will be caught in the storm.

Not far off you can see the Dragons hoard touching down on a large island at the center of the long archipelago. The Spirit follows suit. Descending through the cloud ceiling and breaking through branch and bramble. Luminescent jets of flame a hue of orange and blue scorch the ground.

The Spirit touches down softly among the trees. Another vox from Captain Xinhua comes through informing you that he intends to send a scouting party out immediately while the majority of your forces work to build up a defensive position encompassing both landing zones.

After assembling your squad and making your way to the hangar you begin speaking. "Another squad has gone out ahead of us to search the island, we'll be joining them while our brothers dig in here." Before you can continue someone interrupts your briefing.

The lackadaisical commissar calls over your briefing. "Hey, space marine!" He saunters over to your gathering. "I heard you plan on going ashore, as it were." Your tone betrays your annoyance and the unwelcome interruption. "This is the case, why do you ask?"

His lips curl up into a mischievous grin. "I, that is my men and I should accompany you." You let him know your opinion on the matter. "That is a terrible idea" you announce flatly.

He shakes his head. "Just hear me out, we need to procure supplies so were going to scout out the settlements we picked up from orbit. Now if we come across these settlements who do you think they'd be more receptive to dealing with, a group of towering Astartes or a friendly commissar and his men."

You scoff at the man. "Your suggestion has been noted, and ignored." The commissar huffs. "So stubborn, well if not me you should still consider taking some guardsmen." He turns on his heels and makes to leave the hangar whistling an imperial marching cadence as he goes.

While the commissar would be a liability you consider if there are any guardsmen who might prove useful on the scouting mission.

Realizing that, inspite of his crass aproach, the commissar was right in addressing the utility of bringing guardsmen on a potential diplomatic mission. While it would be pertinent to have guardsmen among you in the event the settlements on this world are imperial. It would undeniably serve you well to ingratiate yourselves with the guardsmen in hopes they come around fully to your side. Motioning to a nearby guardsman you beckon him to you. “Y-yes milord.” he stutters out. “What is your name son?” the guardsman settles himself, his voice responding with a more firm confidence. “Private first class, Savrin milord.” breaking his military bearing he adds. “C-course I s'pose ya could call me Frank if ya like.”

Cracking a smile beneath your helm you reply. “Frank then, I'd ask you to gather a number of your fellows and bring them to me. I aim to go on an excursion into the wilderness and ascertain what we're dealing with on this world. Can you do that for me Frank.” The young Guardsman seems particularly excited at the prospec of being able to assist you. “At once milord!” He scurries off to collect more guardsemn to join you. After he runs off

Brother Zelhua approaches you. “Seargent, you know I'm not one to rattle cages. But I must ask, are you sure bringing the men who were trying to kill us not hours ago is such a good idea.” Completely understanding his reservations you reply. “Zelhua, these guardsmen present the first stepping stone in an ardous journey to not only redeem ourselves in the eyes of the emperor but to show the imperium that those who hold sway over them are wanting of their own ambitions besides his.” Zelhua doesn't respond so you add. “If we can show those who have been tasked with hunting us that they have been led to do so against the interest of mankind, that alone is worth taking a great deal of risk.” The young marine adds with a lilting titter. “You're atypically impassioned about this matter Seargent, but then again you've always been the type to think things unnecessarily far ahead.”
>>
Frank quickly returns with near a dozen guardsmen. “Milord I've mustered the men as you requested.” you remark at his swiftness. “I appreciate your brevity in gathering them, we'll set out shortly.” before you can make for the exit Ensign Sergio makes her way to your gathering. “Seargent a moment of your time.” acknowledging her you reply. “What is it Ensign?” Her gaze is intense enough to bore a hole through your helm. “I see you're taking my men, I trust your aim isn't to use them as fodder against whatever you might find on the island?” It's clear the remark was made out of spite rather than genuine concern. “Rest assured my actions are well intentioned. I value the lives of all those under my command as I do my own brothers.” She sighs and retorts. “Pretty words may sway the men but I'm not so easily bought, I'll be accompanying you.” “I would advise against it but I doubt you'd heed my objections.” she smiles and says. “I'm glad we're on the same page.” After assembling your force of Marines and guardsmen you make your way for the vehicle bay.

>>take the Rhino

You enter the bay with your squad and the guardsmen in tow, shortly after most of the men split up to gather supplies for the excursion. You're left with Frank and Ensign Sergio. “Why are we wasting time loitering here Sergeant?” addressing her you reply. “We'll need supplies, rations ammunition and what not. No telling how long we'll be out in the field. A transport to carry everything would be helpful as well, preferably a Razorback” She shoots you a look as if you'd said something terribly outlandish. “A Razorback Sergeant?” you shake your head. “I did say preferable, I'm well aware that the guard isn't typically issued Rhino pattern vehicles.”

In the vehicle bay Marines servitors and guardsmen are working on various vehicles, some of your brothers assist in modifying vehicles and their armaments to be more accommodating to Astartes. A familiar voice calls your name. You're approached by brother Chuan, the techmarine isn't wearing his helm and you're seeing his face for the first time in quite a while. His features are rougher than you remember, his skin tanned like leather with a roughness to match. “Seems you're the big hero of the day yet again, I would say don't expect a reward this time around but then we'd both be the one disappointed.”

Unsure of what he means you ask. “Are you saying I'm to be rewarded?” he laughs and rubs the back of his neck. “If you want to call it a reward, come with me I'll show you your prize for winning the day.” moving through the vehicle bay you approach a vehicle in a noticeable state of disrepair. It's hard to tell if it was at some point painted with a gray and green tiger stripe pattern or if the coloration is simply the result of the oxidization of metal. On the upside, it's been given some upgrades very recently. An extra layer of armor that wraps downward and around providing more protection on the front and sides. A heavy plow has been attached to the front for moving through difficult terrain. Lastly some of the more trifling features of the vehicle have been gutted to accommodate additional cargo, namely the seats. The Ensign let's out an audible groan at the sight of the thing.
>>
Asking Chuan where in the hell they dug this thing up he responds. “It was aboard the Dragon's hoard, they were using it to clear the brush between our vessels when it suffered a minor malfunction.” Asking what he means by minor malfunction he waves his hand dismissively. “Don't worry I got it sorted myself.” While everything about the vehicle fires warning alarms in your head you trust Chuan's work with your life and decide not to press the matter further. “So she'll get us to the scouting party?” Chuan sighs. “You, no. Your supplies... so long as you don't overload her. Which reminds me, in their last communicae the scouts asked us to send enough kit to set up a small forward operating base, they could only bring so much with the time they had.” you thank Chuan for his time and begin loading up the Rhino.

Frank pitches in to help while Ensign Sergio delegates the duty to more of the men. Frank seems to have taken a liking to the vehicle. “This'll be muh first time in a Land Raider milord, never thought I'd see one up close much less get ta ride it.” His comment illicit's a chuckle from Chuan. “What's so funny milord?” Chuan shakes his head. “Nothing private, do enjoy your trip in the Land Raider.” Chuan leaves the rest of the packing to you, Frank seems somewhat confused but quickly perks up and addresses you. “Sergeant, have ya thought of a name fer e'r?” Replying you tell him. “No, I suppose it's not uncommon to do so but the thought hadn't crossed my mind.” Frank questions. “Well what about...”

“Well what about Rocksteady?” you look at the private, though he can't see your face under your helm your sure he knows what expression it bears. “Ya don' like it?” you shrug. “Well, it's not a name I could have come up with.” he smiles. “The Rocksteady it is then.” defeated you return to packing the Rhino full of cargo. Taking just shy of an hour you load everything you need and finally leave the belly of the ship. Walking down a ramp that descends from one of the bays openings your squad forms a v at the front of the vehicle with the guardsmen pulling security to the sides and rear.

Your party steps out into the wilderness, swarming flora encircle much of the drop zone save for a large swathe of deforested land to the east. Past the cleared treeline you can see the landing zone of Dragon's hoard where the rest of the first company is at work entrenching the area, slowly working their way toward the Spirit. Hanging above the emergent layer of the canopy a thick network of rain clouds stretches across the sky. It appears the storm you saw during your descent has covered the island entirely. The rain is coming down heavy, while you and your brothers shrug it off the guardsmen seem somewhat irate at the weather. You look to Ensign Sergio who's sitting atop the Rhino, she seems annoyed.

“Does a little foul weather distress you so?” she shoots you a glare. “A wet uniform is the least of my worries Sergeant, the rain interferes with our armors stealth capabilities. It also reduces the effective range of plasma and Las weaponry.” you fall back a bit in the formation, coming up alongside the Rhino, you notice the words Rocksteady scrawled across it's hull in white paint. You're a bit perplexed, as you had Frank in your sight the entire time you spent loading her and don't remember him stopping to paint the name. You write the issue off as insignificant and continue your conversation with the Ensign, all the while moving along with the Rhino as it crosses the treeline and begins to carve it's way through the underbrush. “You shouldn't let it worry you, after all we shouldn't run into anything out here.” she clicks her tongue at you. “And just like that I feel you've jinxed us Sergeant.”

A few hours of travel through the bush and you find yourself surrounded by jungle on all sides. Occasionally you come across a marking or beacon left by the scouting party to guide your way. The party remains fairly quiet save for some scattered chatter among the guardsmen. The relative calm is broken by a shout from one of the guardsmen. He's at the far left side of the formation about fifty meters from the Rocksteady. Rushing to his position you're shocked to find a heavily injured scout marine of the tenth company, his wounds are...

You recognize the scout as initiate Vahn, a young pdf soldier from your recent campaign against the orcs. One of only a handful of your chapters initiates Vahn has yet to receive his gene seed as your chapter is I'll equipped to perform the procedure.

The scout has a most peculiar series of injuries. Numerous small cuts and bruises cover his dermis, clearly visible through his scout armor. The most jarring thing about his state is an ornate wooden spear jutting out of his abdomen. Kneeling down next to him you ask in hushed a tone. "What happened initiate?"

Vahn coughs up a mix of blood and bile as he recounts what happened. "We had set out to locate the settlement, only a few hours in something started hitting us from the tree line. We didn't see what at first and they were gone before we knew what happened." He cringes and reaches at the spear.

"Don't pull it out, your guts will leak out if you do." He lowers his arm and continues. "I lost line of sight on the others when the storm hit us, but I think they got away safe. I was trying to link back up with the rest of the tenth when those things came back around pinned me to the tree with a fuckin spear. When I heard you coming through the brush I thought it was those things coming to finish me off."

You stand back up and reassure the initiate. "Your safe now brother." He let's out a sigh. "Thank the emperor." He starts to drift in and out of conciousness. Usman approaches you from the Rocksteady. "Sergeant what's our course of action?"

>saving Vahn is the immediate priority
Send Vahn back to base in Rocksteady

>we have to find the rest of the tenth
Stabilize Vahn and take him with you
>the mission goes on

Leave Vahn, he won't make it. We need to find the settlement
>>
>>3389466
>we have to find the rest of the tenth
keep him safe in the rocksteady
we have power armour the guard cn stay in the Rhino
the scouts a potential Space Marine if he doesn't survive a light spear wound then he would've never lived through the gene-seed implantation process anyway
