/qst/ - Quests

Previous threads: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=One%20Piece%20Bounty%20Photographer%20Quest
Cover-art kindly provided by our noble artiste, Draw-anon, who kindly took time off repainting the Sistine Chapel for us. Look upon our prettyboy protagonist. Look upon his devilish smile and despair.

In last thread’s episode of M.A.R.I.N.E.s, our hero ENSIGN HARRY FLASHMAN was kicked in the crotch by a small girl. It hurt. After that, he ventured out into the wilds of Loguetown, only to find himself beating and recruiting a pair of bounty-hunting dumbasses named Sunglasses and Hat. Or something like that. Drunkenly celebrating, he then assisted Detective Pistol-chan in taking down a Whitebeard spy, causing much headaches and paperwork for papa-Smo. Oh, and then the Strawhats arrived, and some stuff happened, but who cares about them?

We now return you to your scheduled idiocy.
>>
Zoro you baka, I thought you were a cool dude.
>>
Rolled 76 (1d100)

>defiant to the end, harry flashman dies

“Don’t give him what he wants!” You tense in Roronoa’s grip, trying not to make him think you’re attempting anything.

Tashigi’s eyes narrow, and you see her throat bob as she swallows. “Let him go! We don’t negotiate with criminals - just make this easier on yourself!”

“No can do, not while my crew are in cells,” Roronoa says, angling his blade pointedly (ha, pointedly) against you. “The orange-haired witch, and the blond with the curly-brow. Get them out, and your comrade doesn’t get hurt.”

“Like I said, we won’t negotiate! So... just let him go!”

The blade pressed in, and you manage not to flinch at the stinging sensation, or the warm blossoming of blood. “Sounds like you’re not a popular enough guy, Ensign.”

Tashigi freezes at what must be the sight of the slow dribble of blood down your neck. “W-Wait! I’ll call my Captain!”

You can just about see Roronoa’s eyes narrow, though he still grins. “Fine. But if he says no...”

Your senior nods, teeth gritted, and pulls the Den Den from her pocket, quickly calling.

Do it as soon as Smoboss picks up and starts talking, because that's going to be the moment where most of Zoro's attention is going to be focused elsewhere.

This can be done before or after Smoboss answers, but this betraying bastard deserves it.

Sides it will be hilarious to use Sanji's signature move against him.

>>3353163
Dragon busts in and beats up everyone chasing the Strawhats up was literally the plot of canon Loguetown though.
>>
Looks like most votes are to wait for Smoboss rather than attempt escape.

Before I write, does anyone still want to say anything while waiting for him to pick up?

Rolled 92 (1d100)

>i-it’s not like i ever liked you anyway, baka!

You scoff as the Den Den starts to ring, feeling a Roronoa lift the sword slightly from your throat. “I should have expected something fishy from someone that disses the cutlass as a weapon,” you mutter, Roronoa shifting against you. “And - and wielding a sword in your mouth is stupid anyway!”

“You think it’s cool,” Roronoa mutters back.

“I d-definitely don’t!” Shit! He somehow saw through you!

A click.

“I’m busy, Ensign,” Smoker’s voice snaps, along with the sound of different crashing. “What’s the problem?”

“Sir!” Why is she saluting the Den Den? “I’ve got a pirate here who’s taken Ensign Flashman hostage, in order to release two of his crewmates from the cells! Orders, sir!”

There’s a long silence.

“I LEAVE YOU BRATS ALONE FOR FIVE MINUTES?!”

Um. Oh shit.

“WHAT THE HELL?!” Aaah... he’s definitely mad. “What crew are they from?! Wait, shit - is it Strawhat’s?”

You perk up, as does Roronoa.

“I - I don’t know what-“

Roronoa interrupts her, calling out. “That’s right, I’m on Strawhat Luffy’s crew. “You got him there?”

There’s the unmistakable sound of your boss’ grinding teeth. “He’s here, all right - he and Alvida are tearing up the damn execution grounds, and Alvida has hostages. I can’t move in!”

You feel more than see Roronoa’s grin widen. “Two hostage events in one day. Loguetown’s an exciting place, huh? Tell you what, Captain - you let my crewmates go, and we’ll help our own Captain with your little Alvida problem, how about that?”

“Like hell I’ll team up with a pirate!”

“Ha. Your Ensign didn’t seem to have a problem with that...”

“Not me, sir!” Tashigi, you traitor!

“It’s Roronoa Zoro! I thought he was a bounty hunter!” You don’t wail. Much.

“Is this even important?! Let my idiot Ensign go, or I’ll be dealing with you next, Roronoa. Every scratch you give him, you’ll regret.”

That”s touching, but it really doesn’t help you right now. Roronoa tugs you slightly closer, obviously getting irritated. “I’ve got a blade to his throat, you know. Try being a little considerate.”

In the Den Den’s background, you hear a faint voice yelling ‘Gomu’ something. The hell?

>>3353304
We need to work on our special moves after this. We had a few of them planned out but we never trained them.

Since Sanji most generously passed down this move to his future kid, I'd say this special move should get an additional bonus if used against baka marimos.

Half of our special moves are absolutely garbage in close quarters though - risk of friendly fire is way too high. Especially billiards and anything to do with out fans.

>86, 92 = 97, 103 @ D.6 level = 97, 109

>i now pronounce this ‘dickkick quest’

Smoboss starts to say something, but you don’t bother to listen. You have something far more important to focus on; a cunning and brilliant ploy, unpredictable in its strategic genius.

Thanking (ugh) Klaus for all Pouncing Raccoon’s flexibility training, you kick one foot hard off the floor... and up into Roronoa’s crotch.

There’s a sound that can only be described as ‘pain personified’. Followed by a high whimper from the man behind you.

Silence and stillness reign in the room, as Tashigi and the men’s jaws hit the floor, apart from some of the men unconsciously dropping their hands to their crotches in sympathy, and you slipping out of Roronoa’s suddenly lax grasp with kami-e, drifting a few steps away.

(Kami-e up to D.9!)

“Well!” You fist-pump, face bright. “I think that went great!!”

Roronoa gives a wheezing grunt, sinking slowly to the floor.

“What’s going on over there?! Tashigi?! Brat?!”

“Uh...” Tashigi clears her throat, as the Marines look at Roronoa with a mix of horror and pity. “Ensign Flashman... is free...”

“What? How?”

“... A terrible way, sir...”

That’s so rude. “The important thing is that Roronoa’s down,” you announce, while the infantry shoot you terrified looks. At least they’re still keeping their guns aimed at Roronoa. “In fact, he may never get ‘up’ again, haha!”

“... I don’t want to know what’s going on, do I?”

“Probably not, sir,” Tashigi mutters. “All right! Men, arrest Roronoa, and get his sw-“

And then, because everything sucks and life is suffering, a tall, cloaked man walks casually through the door, tattoos on his amused face, and announces, “This seems like an interesting party. Alas, it’s time for a few of your guests to leave.”

The hell?

>>3353500
Sis was going to pick it up before Zoro stole it like the pirate scum he is, a good enough excuse for us.
>>
I feel bad for Zoro but honestly the whole "take a hostage" plan was retarded.
Like, he should've just gone straight for the doors.
>>
Here's how I see It with the sword votes.

I have no problem trying to take them, we think he was willing to kill us.

However, If Zoro starts bawling about his dream and the need to carry his friends sword to the top and gets all emotional and shit you know Flashy wouldn't be able to take It from him, at least not personally. He believes too much In his own weapons to take a kindred spirits treasured blade away.

>>
>>3353529
No I'm not forgetting at all, this Is a hypothetical scenario where our plan of potentially taking Zoro's blades wins out and what I think would happen If there wasn't immediate violent Intervention. If Dragon wanted to he'd have already fucked up everyone In this room. We'll see how It plays out, but you know the strawhats are getting bailed out no matter what here.

I don't give a fuck If Tashigi gets the special blade Zoro just looted though, he literally just picked It up so who cares.
>>
>>3353544
Outside of Garp or Sengoku or one of the Admirals exploding through a wall nobody has the slightest chance of beating Dragon.
And none of those people could possibly be here.
>>
Okay, I’m running through a lot of scenarios, and the only logical one I see, Zoro DOES get away with all the blades. Remember that Revolutionary spy from the Meowka crew way back? Dragon ain’t gonna waste time dicking around with a bunch of nobody Marines, even if he isn’t in a ‘kill everyone’ mood.

That said, rest assured that doesn’t mean Zoro will be KEEPING the blade. Tashigi-sis is going to be veeeery pissed off with him, and you’re gonna be chasing after them all, so...
>>
>>3353549
>none of those people could possibly be here.

You can just bullshit that he finds a good sword offscreen somewhere somehow like you just did with him beating a whitebeard pirate with a good blade, so he's not really losing anything.

And I was wondering why you didn't play the Kitetsu scene back when we took him to the shop anyway, It's not like he couldn't have found It there with us. I think.

“Sorry, invites, only,” you tell him cheerily, readying your weapons again. The trickles of blood from your throat and arm are distracting, but not a huge problem. “But if this WAS a fancy dress party, then you’d totally have earned your way in!” It’s a tough thing to finger-gun while holding sword-hilts, but you’ve long mastered the art.

“Let’s call me a plus one.” Cloaked dude strides in, and you could swear the room just got a little chillier. And... breezy? “I’m here for one of my subordinates... but while I’m here, the Strawhats are welcome to come along.”

The infantry’s attention switch from Roronoa’s struggling form, to cloaked dude, some of the weapons changing direction.

“Stop right there!” Tashigi steps forwards, her sword held high. “You’re under arrest for - whatever you’ve done!”

“Tashigi...” Smoboss sighs, crashing still continuing over the Den Den. Then, louder, “And who the hell are you? Another Whitebeard recruit?”

“No.” Cloaked dude makes no movement, face still amused. “Just a man with an interest in upsetting the status quo.”

“That’s-“ Tashigi begins, and then -

“Nrrrghh,” you mumble through the haze. “Wha- wh’r’m’I?”

“You’re aboard the White Mist, sir,” the Marine tells you, naming Captain Smoker’s ship. “You’re in the infirmary, you’ve been out for - about eight hours now.”

That makes you blink, a little more alert. “Eight - what... happ’n’d?”

“Some kind of Haki attack, sir,” the Marine says, stepping aside to let a harried medic move in to check your pulse. “But the docs say you’ll be fine!”

You could have, but you guys wanted to go hunt Alvida instead of look around the shop or try to haggle, so Zoro went ‘hey, a bit of bounty hunting with a Marine who doesn’t know I'm a pirate? Get two better swords and some extra cash? Lol sounds fun’. And thus, canon was further fucked.

>PRIORITIES: NOT STRAIGHT

You take a quick mouthful of proffered water to wet your throat, gulping it down so you can speak. “Are my weapons okay?!”

The medic gives you a look so annoyed, it almost matches Smoboss’. “Yes, sir. They’re in the locker next to your bed. Your BODY is fine too, somewhat more importantly.”

You stare at him. He’s clearly insane. On the other hand, your weapons are okay, so your panic dims. A little. “Can I get up?”

“Should be fine,” the medic grunts, already turning away. “I have more than just one unconscious man to deal with, so free up my bed already.”

... Charming.

You push yourself off the bed, checking yourself over. Shoulder and arm are bandaged, along with gauze stuck around your throat, where -

Where Roronoa Zoro...

You grit your teeth, looking over to where the medic is looking over a series of beds with infantry laid out, and the door your own infantry guy left through once you’d woken.

Tugging on a clean shirt folded at the end of your bed, you totter over to the locker, regaining your balance to the ship’s harsh sway. It must be travelling at some speed.

You breathe a sigh of relief at the sight of all your weapons, undamaged, feeling far better once they’re safely on you.

So... now what?

Balance mostly restored, you head out into the bowels of the White Mist, looking for a swordswoman who's probably going to punch - no, stab you.

But how were you to know Roronoa Zoro was a damn pirate now?! It's totally not your fault! Mostly?

Asking a passing Marine tells you that Tashigi is currently on deck, talking to the navigator. Where you're actually going is another issue, especially as you're teeeechnically not under Smoboss' command, but... we'll, you're not going to complain. Unless you get punished for dereliction of duty or going AWOL.

... You really hope Smoboss already sorted this out with the brass. And that he's not going to murder you himself.

Emerging into sunlight, you quickly spot Tashigi among the Marines working on deck, and hurry over. She looks unhurt, but tired, and her sword is sheathed at her hip.

"Tashigi!" You hurtle over, as quickly as you can. "Are you okay?"

She turns, catchignsight of you and sending a reassuring smile as she waves the navigator away. Maybe she doesn't want to murder you? "I'm okay. We were out for quite a while though - I only woke up myself about twenty minutes ago."

"Yeah, about that... what the hell happened? I remember the cloaked guy talking and then..." You shrug helplessly.

Tashigi scowls, hand instinctively reaching towards her sword. "From the description I gave the Captain, and the medical officer's findings, it seems we were hit by a wave of Haki, which knocked out everyone in the room. Possibly not Roronoa Zoro, I suppose." She reaches up to adjust her glasses. "He left most of the prisoners in their cells, but apparently took the Strawhats and one of the Meowka pirates with him... likely the Revolutionary."

She leans in close, whispering. "From what Captain Smoker says, it sounds like that man was the Revolutionary leader, Dragon. He definitely has some links to the Strawhat pirates - he stepped in at the execution grounds and saved their Captain, too!"

Your eyes widen.

You sassed the Revolutionary Dragon. And the Strawhats are... what, Revolutionaries themselves? No wonder Roronoa joined their crew, if it was some kind of idealism. How are you even still alive?!

"That's insane..." you mutter, bewildered.

Tashigi nods. "We're all lucky to be alive. Captain Smoker is- well. Furious doesn't begin to cover it. Apparently as soon as he got back to base, he loaded almost everyone aboard and took us straight after the Strawhats. We're chasing them towards Reverse Mountain right now."

"Good! I need to kick their asses again!" You went to all that trouble putting those criminal scum in a cell - and getting betrayed by Roronoa 'Backstabber' Zoro himself - only to have them broken out by the most wanted man in the world? Like hell! "But - almost everyone? Did he take Hat and Sunglasses, too?"

Tashigi looks at you with confusion. "If you mean those two new recruits with the... odd headgear and the sunglasses respectively, then yes, they're aboard. They seemed quite worried about you... And also Roronoa for some reason. Maybe they met as bounty hunters?" She shrugs. "The Captain left some infantry at base to look after the rest of the prisoners, but we've got the Whitebeard spy and affilitiates aboard, in case they think of attacking the base again. It's really just a skeleton crew back in Loguetown until we get back, though."

You nod. "That makes sense. I guess it won't take long to track the Strawhats anyway."

"Hopefully we'll get them before the Mountain, but our navigator says Smoker gave orders to chase them over if necessary. They got a few hours headstart on us, and their ship is smaller and lighter, but... we'll see what happens."

She sighs, looking out to sea, the water stretching for miles with no sight of a ship. "I hope we get back soon... I ordered a new polishing cloth for Shigure."

... You'd probably be a hypocrite if you commented on her priorities, huh?

"Anything else I should know about the Strawhats?"

Tashigi considers. "Strawhat Luffy's bounty poster is aboard - thirty million, I think? He's a teenaget who ate the Rubber Rubber Fruit. The Captain says he seems to be an idiot as well, so he possibly just follows orders from Revolutionary HQ. As for his crew... Roronoa Zoro is having a bounty poster made, as we have his picture on file. Sanji and Nami are having theirs made, though we still need pictures for them - apparently they have another crew member, though the dockworkers couldn't give many details beyond a male teenager with a long nose. I don't think they have bounties set yet."

You snort. "Not like they'll need bounties for long!"

"True enough," Tashigi laughs, cheering up a little. "We'll have them soon, but just in case."

"And, uh... do you know if Smoboss brought Klaus along?"

"Not that I'm aware... I don't think he had time to find him, considering how fast we moved, and Klaus isn't actually a Marine anyway..."

You don't know whether to be disappointed or relieved. "Ah, well. This'll be a nice vacation from him for a day or two, I guess."

The pair of you take a moment to bask in the knowledge that Klaus is absolutely, totally, nowhere nearby.

In the distance, thunder rumbles... OMINOUSLY.

You shove the door open and enter to see... wow, that's a lot of paperwork covering the desk. Smoboss seems to have abandoned it in favor of spreading a massive map across a table, chewing furiously on three cigars as he glared down at it. At least he's down to three?

At your entrance, he glances up, running narrowed eyes over you. "Well, you're alive, at least." He sounds more disgruntled than angry, now. "How the hell did you get captured AGAIN, brat?"

Vivi, King Cobra and even the Strawhats might get in some very hot water over Alabasta, since the world government is only going to see members of the Revolution interfering with one of the 20 founding countries.

Enies Lobby is going to be 10000% more inflammatory than it already was, because again its going to be seen as the revolution giving a gigantic middle finger to the marines, and by extension the world government.

I can also see Sanji making it into the eleven supernovas, considering the possibly inflated bounty and the fact that Kidd and Killer are dead. This may bring him to the attention of the Vinsmoke's much earlier than canon, especially if they get a good photo of him.

inb4 the revolutionaries are dragged into Marineford thanks to the Luffy-Ace connection, leading to an early ASL reunion How public was Ace and Luffy's relationship before Marineford again?

"It was only for a minute!' You tromp over to the like of paper, huffing in annoyance. "And it's not like I knew he was a pirate, anyway!"

Smoker snorts, his cigar-smoke decreasing a little as he relaxes. "Yeah, I won't complain for you not figuring out Roronoa Zoro was a damn pirate. How the hell did that even happen?" He scowls down at the map, as you drag a chair over to the desk and start work on the first pieces of paperwork- some supply requisition bullshit for Smoboss' sudden leave of base.

"I didn't meet him, but his crew all seemed to have a lot of faith in him," you mention, starting work. "When I took those first two in, it was like they honestly believed he'd come and break them out, and it was better to just wait."

"Then his crew's as stupid as he is," Smoboss says. "And thanks for reminding me."

"Of wha-? OW!"

The smoke plume retreats from whacking your head. "What were you doing arresting them anyway?! Take a picture and call for backup, idiot!"

"The girl tried to rob me!"

>biopapa angst

You feel the indignation burning, glaring over at Smoboss. Normally you wouldn't dare, but this is... you can't just accept that. "She tried to steal my father's compass!"

Bossman... actually pauses, face smoothing into mild surprise, before turning swiftly to a small frown. "Your file says you grew up in an orphanage."

"Yeah, my mother left it with me." Maybe you sound a little defensive, but so what? "It's the only thing I have of him, I'm not gonna risk it."

Smoboss looks away, reaching up to drag the cigars from his mouth. How does he even talk around them? Devil Fruit bullshit? "Fine. I guess I can't complain about something like that. Just... She could have been a lot more dangerous than she was, brat."

You scowl down at the paperwork, forging Smoboss' signature at the end. It's basically a squiggle anyway. "Yeah, well, she wasn't." Ugh. Why does the subject of the compass always make you... like this?

You hear another chair creak, as bossman presumably settles down. "Brat." He sounds... almost reluctant?

You keep working. "Yeah, Smoboss?"

"Where you grew up... was it okay?"

Smoboss make a vague noise of... understanding? Acceptance? "That's good."

"If you ever have any illegitimate children you don't want, I definitely recommend it." You force yourself to look over and finger-gun, even if your smile's a little wooden. "Lots of piggybacks for the younger kids!"

"Damn - and there I've been drowning my unwanted kids in sacks."

You choke on thin air, chair tipping as you flail. "S-Smoboss?!" Shit, that smirk - you really want to throw a pen at him. RESIST. RESIST. "That's not funny!"

"No, but your face was," he drawls, cigars going back in his giant jerk mouth. When the hell does he make jokes like that?! "Now, listen up, rookie - in all seriousness, here. When we catch up to the Strawhats, I don't want you fighting them."

You seem to be handling the quest alright so far. Mechanics seem to be holding up fine, and we're not getting OP quickly even with those ridiculous rolls of ours. The constant training instead of photography made sense considering we wanted to follow Smoker

Main thing I can think of is Smoker might be a bit too affectionate? I can definitely see him being happy about a kitten apprentice, but headpats seem a bit too far. Heart backslaps seem like they'd be enough, though that might just be personal preference

If it weren't for those dice, the Whitebeard affiliates wouldn't have attacked, and Dragon was meant to attack when you were elsewhere... I'd like to point out though that you ALWAYS have an option to just run away and call for backup. At the end of the day, you're a non-combat officer, and you're going to be chastised more for getting into combat you can't handle than for taking a picture and running away.

Honestly, Smoboss is being seriously lenient. What he should be saying is 'stop getting into fights, you dumbass'.

"What? Bossman, I owe them at least a stabbing or five! Can't I least take pictures?"

"Pictures, fine. Stabbing, no. Just because I didn't feel like leaving you unconscious in a base that might get attacked again, doesn't mean I want you to get killed out HERE." He leans back in the chair, and you can tell he wants to kick back and put his boots on the desk. Too bad, Smoboss, it'll ruin the map! Ha!

You scowl. "I just want it on record that I'm three for three on arresting the Strawhats."

"You didn't technically arrest Roronoa. You kicked him in the balls."

"Same thing."

"... Who taught your Academy classes?"

"Did you want me to do this paperwork or not, bossman?"

"Never mind."

>79 - regular seaking attack, nothing special, considering how close you are to Loguetown

Throughout the day, there's a few sightings of the Strawhats' ship in the distance, but not much else - this close to Loguetown, piracy is rare, and the only others you pass are fishing boats and a few merchants.

There's a nasty seaking attack at one point, the beast rising up above the desk of the White Mist and smashing it's massive head down... except Smoboss promptly wraps it's neck in smoke plumes, and beats the ever-loving crap out of it.

Then he tells you and Tashigi off for looking disappointed at not getting to do anything.

>kami-e

You're not quite feeling up to training with sword or jitte, and there's no range for a pistol, but you kind of feel like you had a breakthrough with kami-e earlier. You know, after you kicked Roronoa Zoro in the balls.

... That's still kind of amazing.

In any case, ignoring the work going on around you, you stand on deck, closing your eyes as you breathe in the sea air.

Then -

Muscles relax, body loosens up, even your bones feel softer (that's your imagination, right?), and you can almost feel the wind carry you away as it catches at your body --

You open your eyes, finding yourself two steps from your precious location. Okay. That took less time than normal. Now again, but with your eyes open. And again. And again.

(Kami-e to C.1!)
__________

You go to sleep in a cramped set of quarters for lower-ranking officers, hastily thrown together into a semblance of neatness.

You wake up at 7am, in the same place, but now with the point of a scabbard at the gauze on your throat, and the creepy face of an alcoholic hobo leering down at you.

"You're late for traaaaaining~" the demonic face croons in the dim light.

... Aren’t we technically not under Smoker’s authority? I seem to recall that being said at one point. As long as we say we’re looking for pictures of pirates, we can probably get away with fighting.

>d-d-d-dual! ... wielding

Ka-tan and Cut-chan. Ka-tan and Jitte-san. Cut-chan and Jitte-san. The fans - you still haven’t named them, smirking little newbies that they are. Pistol-chan is harder to work with on a ship, so you can’t practise with him as much, but you spend a few hours on deck working on variations, flipping between different combinations as you run through katas, shadow-duelling against invisible enemies

It’s surprisingly easy to perform one move with one hand, and another with a completely different weapon in your other hand, independently of each other. You never thought your moves could be so smooth.

(Dual-Wielding +1, 30/30! Skill changed to Ambidextrous trait: will no longer suffer a malus from dual-wielding even unfamiliar weaponry. Outside combat, can perform actions with separate hands with full finesse, assuming concentration/skill is reasonable.)

(On switching weapons mid-combat, even in the middle of most melee, 50% chance to switch with no inconvenience.)

>return of the revenge of the jitte kid

“Did you really beat up Zo- Roronoa Zoro?”

Man, Hat and Sunglasses are really invested in this, by the way they corner you, fists clenched before them. “Yeah. So?”

“E-Ensign-aniki!”

“I’m so torn...”

You glance at Hat. “Huh? Why?”

“U-uh, we were so glad to see the execution grounds, but now we wish we’d been at the base! That’s all!”

“That’s definitely all!”

Makes sense. “Yeah, it was definitely a sight,” you say, crossing your arms. “Whitebeard wannabes, that backstabber Roronoa Zoro, and then the Revolutionary leader... honestly, I’m kind of amazed most of us survived.”

“Backstabber?” Sunglasses scratches his chin, leaning in close. “Hey, hey, Ensign-aniki... was the fight against Z-Roronoa really tough? A battle for ages?”

“... Yes. It was very intense. And painful.” You don’t say for who. “S-so! On a completely unrelated note, uh - oh, look, it’s Mina! Let’s see Mina!”

“Oh, the office kid?” Hat and Sunglasses are happy to follow you over, like the mentally-disabled ducklings they are. “I’m amazed she’s aboard here...”

“Well, she lives on base, so it’s not like she’d be safe if they got attacked again,” you point out. “Although apparently Smoboss made sure the papers said we’ve got the Whitebeard spy and their wannabes with us, so if anyone gets attacked, it’ll definitely be this ship!”

“... Doesn’t that just put her in more danger?”

“Not with Smoboss here!” Bossman is too cool! And undeafeatable!

“... Aniki, why are you sparkling?”

“Mina! Say hi to Sunglasses and Hat!”

“Those aren’t our na-“

The little girl, a way-too-big jitte attached to her back (ooh, her proper one must have arrived), stares up at your idiots and smiles. “Hi, Sunglasses, hi Hat!”

“Those still aren’t our-“

“These guys need a good beating sometimes, so don’t feel afraid to give them one,” you tell her seriously.

She nods. “Mmph! I’ll definitely beat them, Harry! No mercy!”

“Good to know!”

“THAT’S NOT GOOD AT ALL, ANIKIIIII!?!”

What a beautiful day.

>TO THE PAIN

“All right - let’s keep you up to date on your lessons, Mina! Sunglasses, Hat, it’s time for you guys to suffer.”

Hat stares at you. “To... suffer?”

“That’s a special Marine term. It means to ‘get stronger’.”

“I’ve never heard that one before...”

You frown. “Would I lie to you? Mina, is Hat calling me a liar?”

She nods. “He’s calling you a liar, Harry!”

“I’M DEFINITELY NOT CALL-“

“It’s time for these two to ‘get stronger’,” you announce brightly.

Ignoring Sunglasses’ cries of ‘But I didn’t say anything, why meeee’, you clear a space on deck, three groups standing as if at the points of a triangle. After all, not letting the ducklings fight together would just get them beaten too soon, and you need more time to make them suf- stronger.

“On three!” You call, wielding

>98 v 36, 20, 87

Jitte-san rests determined in your hands as you swing into action. Mina heads directly for the ducklings, her own jitte already aiming for Sunglasses’ side, then redirecting to catch his dao.

For your own part, you go for Hat - while he moves in to defend his friend, you charge in, Jitte-san lashing out towards his own weapon and catching it, tugging it aside.

He’s not an idiot, amazingly, but then he’d be long dead if he were. He steps back, disengaging from Jitte-san rather than taking him head-on, wary of your skill.

You hear several metallic clashes, a grinding noise, and spare a quick glance at Mina to see her grunting with exertion as she twists her jitte, ramming Sunglasses’ dao aside and loosening his grip. Her skill is brilliant, but the strength is lacking.

As for you, you step in to Hat’s guard as he lashes out again, flexing your body away from the path of his blade and lifting Jitte-san almost straight up, catching his sword on your tines. “Surrender?”

Hat grunts. “Go get strong!”

You shrug, disengaging Jitte-san swiftly rather than breaking his blade, and swinging him around in a vicious blow that ends with cracking him hard against Hat’s thigh. He falls back and down with a yelp, stumbling, The perfect opportunity for you to step lightly in and flick his fallen dao away. “Out,” you tell him, “but good job!”

Then there’s just Mina, finishing up Sunglasses with a series of rapid, painful jabs to his foot with the tip of her jitte, bringing him howling to a knee, and then resting her weapon against his neck. “Out!”

Then your jitte meets her own neck, very gently.

“Multiple opponents, Mina,” you remind her.

“Oh... nuts.”

(Jitte +1! Slightly decreased malus to fighting multiple opponents! Sunglasses’ and Hat’s combat proficiency increased!)

The news coo arrives in the afternoon, and after Smoboss has read it (on three cigars now, thanks to his growing irritation over the Strawhats’ speed), you and Tashigi huddle over it to read the updates.

DRAGON SIGHTED - ATTACK ON LOGUETOWN, is naturally the headline for this, the East Blue edition. Dragon, potential Whitebeard pirates, and the Strawhats make for several pages of lurid description.

Oh, hey, you get a mention! No picture, but being known as the guy who captured a Whitebeard spy, two Strawhats and brought down Roronoa Zoro is pretty cool.

... Although you think you may have just made a few shitlists. Huh.

“Strawhat Luffy’s bounty is up to 45,000,000,” Tashigi says, flicking through the new posters. “‘Witch Thief’ Nami is five million - ‘Cheapshot’ Sanji at ten million - ‘Demon Blade’ Zoro at fifteen million. I guess being affilitated with Revolutionaries gets you a high bounty, huh?”

You’re more interested in the appellations. “Cheapshot Sanji... it’s perfect!”

“Should we start calling you Cheapshot as well?”

You avoid Tashigi’s pointed look. “Oh, look, it’s sketches for Nami and Sanji. I’ll have to fix that.”

“There’s something of Roronoa’s you can never fix...”

“Technically I think he’s definitely fixed now.”

“PIRATES AHEAD!”

The pair of you drop the papers, racing for the deck.

Being Sanji is suf- getting strong.

>>3357369
Considering Alvida, who’d been around for a while, was at 5 million, those are pretty good starter bounties. Especially when Dragon was there for his spy, and only rescued the Strawhats because they were conveniently there. That said, why do they need any bounties when they’re clearly going to be caught by Captain Smoker? If they get away, however...
>>

>arise, MY CHILDREN

As you run, you slip the twins from beneath your jacket, keeping them closed for now, holding them at their base. There’s no way you’ll draw them properly in these cramped corridors, but you let the chains slip out a little more as you and Tashigi hit the deck, infantry preparing for combat.

Smoboss is already gone - you can see the massive cloud of smoke raging across to the enemy ship, while cannonfire begins roaring from both them and your own cannons belowdecks.

“We’re not close enough to board, yet,” Tashigi yells, eyes latched firmly on the opponents. You vaguely recognize the flag - the Calypso Pirates, they’ve got some kind of tropical theme going on. Clearly hoping to avoid Loguetown on their way to the Grand Line - just their luck that Smoboss is at sea anyway.

Broadsides rage, non-Smoboss-related smoke fogging the air with acrid fumes. You plunge through, aiming for the railings. It’s too far to jump, for now, but the two ships get closer even as the White Mist speeds alongside.

The pirates think it's a daring move, but it's just dumb luck.

>lmao top kek
>24 hour Crit used, Autosuccess

You raise your hands, swinging the twins around, as your gaze focuses on a nice bit of strong-looking railing on the enemy ship.

The acrid smoke billows around you, swept into a cyclone by the rapidly-circling fans, and Tashigi finally looks back to catch sight of you. “Flashman, what are-?”

“SEEYALATERBYE,” you yell, hurtling across the deck, picking up speed across the rolling deck, flick the chains higher as you lunge up onto the railings, kick out HARD, JUMP —

You soar. Like a really weirdly-shaped seagull.

And then, just as gravity remembers you’re here, you flick the chains forward, even harder, snapping them from whirling dervishes to piercing arrows, screaming forwards at your target, chains spiralling around each other as they coil tighter and tighter forwards, each separate clink of individual link against link nudging the main fans into the right angles.

With a fraction of inch to go, the fans slam through the same railing gap - and the movement of the ship means the railing slams into them, the force flinging them around to coil tight around the offending railing.

You’re already falling, following the chain, hand-over-hand as you rapid-fire pull your way up the chains, the interlinked metal just enough to support your weight.

By the time your feet slam against the ship’s side, you’re already kick-running your way up, using the chains as a climbing rope now.

“WHAT THE HEEEEELLLLLLLL-“ you vaguely hear over the cannonfire from the White Mist, but you’re too busy giving a final leap over the railing to notice, dropping to a crouch on a deck already engaged in battle.

Smoboss sure has been busy, but even he can’t be everywhere.

(Fans +1!)

Pistol-chan makes her presence known with a 'thank you for inviting me' gift, by which you mean he casually deposits a bullet through the skull of one scumbag who's taking aim at you. The next one is much trickier - you manage to dodge to the side of an incoming shot thanks only to a sudden, intense bad feeling, thanking your luck as it just barely misses your side.

As it is, that sidestep brings you into comfortable range of a swordswoman, whose stomach makes a charming temporary sheathe for Cut-chan. She doesn't stay in there for long.

Pistol-chan greets the pirate who nearly hit you, and you weave past the corpse of the swordswoman as she falls, letting her body take a bullet or two meant for you.

Cut-chan skims out as you go, slicing her merry way through someone's legs even as they turn at the sound of your approaching footsteps.

By now, the White Mist is close enough that infantry are tugging a gangplank into place, the first few already running across. Tashigi herself is yelling orders above the sound of gunfire and screams, while -

Ah. And there's Smoboss.

His figure looms large on deck, emerging from below in a rapidly condensing cloud of smoke, blood coating his jacket, and a cigar still lit in his mouth. "YOUR CAPTAIN'S DEAD," he bellows, voice rising even above the cannonfire.

Everything falls into place quickly after that, once a few stragglers who refuse to throw down their weapons are taken care of.

Still-living pirates restrained and wounded Marines being tended, Smoboss finally turns his attention onto you.

He doesn't look happy.

Shit. Your will's not up to date.

This, being comedic and chill is cool, I love Flashman as a character, but I feel like it's totally justifiable for him to be annoyed constantly told to sit out when he's both an officer and actually really strong in his own right.

I get we're noncombatant and flashman was initially completely fine with that, prefer it even, but it would be good character growth to watch him slowly resent that as he continues to get stronger. Just my take, I don't speak for the playerbase.

It's very much a question that's been building up for a while now. If you were actually a regular Marine officer, what you'd be doing would still be reckless, but understandable... as it is, what you're doing is far outside your remit.

Plus, he's told you a million times not to do something, and you still keep doing it. That kind of thing pisses him off.

You swallow hard, fists clenching at your sides, but you keep your head up and back straight. "Boss, you can't ignore the fact that I've been doing pretty damn good in battle. These weapons were something I've trained in for a while in private. Do you have any idea how much I've been training since I got to Loguetown?"

"More than I thought," the Captain bites out, shoulders still tense, but at least he isn't yelling. Or beating you around the head with his jitte. "Yes, you've been useful in a fight. Yes, you've been training hard. I acknowedge that. Including the fact that yes, charging in like that was the most stupid thing you could have done. But at the end of the day, you're still a member of the Photography Department, not a combat officer."

He leans closer, scowling. "If you want to fight, transfer departments. And even more importantly than that, you listen to orders when you're aboard my ship or in base, and if I tell you not to do something, you damn well DON'T DO IT. Is that understood, Ensign?"

Smoboss grumbles something incomprehensible, turning sharply to stalk back to his desk as he gives you a harsh wave over his shoulder. "Just give me the damn papers when you're done with them. You nod frantically, not being suicidal enough to push further right now. One week. You can manage staying out of too much trouble for one week, right?

"We hit Reverse Mountain tomorrow," Smoboss says, voice a little calmer as he slumps into his chair, maybe because he's lighting a second cigar. 'Damn Strawhats - hopefully we won't spend too long in the Grand Line." He eyes you pointedly. "Of course, you'll be too busy on latrine duty for the next week to worry about that."

"What?! But Smobo-"

"Two weeks."

You shut up.

Yo I'm in combat now, didn't you say something about making cut-chan stronger?

>Armament Haki is unlikely to be a thing, at least not for an incredibly long while, because people do seem to be predisposed to just the one type. Plus, giving you Armament too isn’t just too cheaty, and this IS supposed to Ben a non-combat Quest anyway.

>TA-SIS-I, I LIIIIIVE

You tuck the forms under an arm and dart out before it can be extended to a month. Up on deck, infantry are finishing up clearing away the fallen debris and bloodstains, Tashigi overseeing them.

She catches sight of you as you approach, smiling in relief. "You're okay?"

>IS supposed to Ben a non-combat Quest anyway.
Eh I have a lot to say about this, sorry QM.

1) That's been rendered moot though since we're literally just transferred to combat.

Haki does seem to have an inherited aspect (see: Ace developing Conqueror's freakishly young because Rodger's kid) so really Flashman should be predisposed to Armament over observation anyway seeing as Doffy has Armament, and neither Flamingo has shown any indication of being able to use observation.
I'm thinking QM went with observation over Armament because they didn't expect everyone to be clamouring for combat at the start.

As for being overpowered, it took Luffy two entire years to go from zero to hero with any Haki, and he's a haki prodigy head and shoulders above the rest.

If Flashman, who isn't a prodigy, starts training around now then in the three years it will take to get us to the post timeskip arcs he "might" be nearing the level of someone like Sanji. Not a haki monster like Luffy, but still pretty decent.

Even if we start working on it now I don't expect us to be using armament to any significant degree till at least Marineford, and that's only if the dice are kind. But we can still start working on it, rather than just cramming the training arcs in during the timeskip period.

I'm basing my prodigy status on being able to access all three types desu. Really like Luffy.

Yeah, I briefly mentioned you'd got them.

While this obviously isn't a non-combat quest any longer, and Armament Haki is a real possibility (hell, even Conquerors if you roll well enough), you won't be using it for a long while yet. You don't even realize you're using uncontrolled Observation Haki so far, and there's no need right now for Armament (which neither Smoker nor Klaus know how to use).

I gave you guys the start of awakening Observation as a freebie, but it doesnt feel right to give you Armament accidentally awakening as well. If you want to learn it, I'd recommend having Flashy ICly being interested and tracking someone down to learn it (or waiting until I introduce someone who knows it).

Accidentally activating one form of Haki, I can sort of justify, but two is... just too unbelievable. I don't actually want Flashy to go full, total Gary Stu bullshit. If you guys can figure out an IC reason for Flashy to go 'hey, I wanna learn Armament!' then great, but he hasn't shown any inclination or reason at the moment.

In short: figure out a way to ICly do it, without power-sperg, and it's fine.

>>3358527
Blame HonorableAnon. I do.
>>
>>3358553
...oh no.
One of our babies has to die.
At that point Flashy will search for a way to keep them safe.

Anons, are you ready to sacrifice one member of this budding family for POWER?

Im more than ok with observation only.
Armament could mean that many of our weapons fall into disuse.
I assume after our weapons awaken, they will be able to go against haki'd high-grade ones without being shredded to pieces.
That would mean that Flash would just have to get stronger without armament and rely on skill or just disengage and flee as he was supposed to when this quest started.
>>
>>3358568
Have woken weapons be on par with haki'd ones and boom, no need for armament haki.>>3358571

>live long enough to become the scum

You shake your head sadly. "I've been sentenced to DEATH Crime: Being too badass."

"... So how long are you on latrine duty for?"

You slump. "Two weeeeeks!"

"There, there," she smiles. "You deserve it."

"That's... that's not reassuring?"

"It wasn't meant to be." She folds her arms, still smiling sweetly. "Who was the non-combat officer that decided to charge an enemy ship by himself?"

"Um. I'm transferring to combat now?"

"Does that change the past?"

>... You're kind of mad at me, huh?
>I'm sorry for being an idiot. Okay?
>Can we at least admit that I looked really badass?
>Other?

>>3358553
Fair enough. Yeah I agree obeservation haki comes first.

>nor Klaus know how to use
Huh that surprised me. Assuming we went Armament in the early 'pick your power up' segment, would that have gotten us introduced to a haki user then?

>>3358568
It either due to one of our babies dying, or the interest could be an extension of Flashman going 'how can I make my beautiful babies shine EVEN MOORRRE' like >>3358460 suggests.

>>3358571
>Armament could mean that many of our weapons fall into disuse.
Nah the endgame goal is to enhance our weapons with armament haki, like Zoro does with his blades. I don't expect Flashman to be going bare knuckled haki boxer kek.
