You're a lad from the Sengoku Jidai. This is a bizarre era and the Samurai spend their days fighting each other over land and wealth and all of that. You couldn't care less for now, the poor folk simply struggled to survive day-to-day as the warrior classes continued the onslaught.

It's not easy to survive, but you did so until your youth of 18. Let's learn a little more about you, won't we?

You were lucky enough to have a parental figure that cared. Your father taught you a bunch of things, his most common job was as a:
>A Farmer.
Teaching you how to plant seeds and harvest crops is nice, but a farmer's work also implies some toughening up. These people are some of the toughest bastards in the land, and could go hand-to-hand with a proper warrior if taught right. Sadly, you're a bit more dull than the rest when it comes to higher learning.
>A Potter.
You need a master's touch to learn proper pottery, and not many masters remain nowadays, so you're one of the lucky few who got to learn the job in your area. You've got a knack for meticulous craft, but hard labor takes a higher toll on you.
>An Ashigaru.
Mercenaries, scum and lowlives. But hey, they fight on foot and win wars for the smart Samurai, so they can live -for now-. You've learned how to properly use a weapon but you've got no real skill that can eke out a dayly wage. Risky, but fun. Or so your father told you.

Alright then, nice job, but you should also have a name. Remember that Japanese names show the last name first then the first name. So if you were John Smith, your name would be Smith John. Let's see what fate brought you:
>Let the dice decide.
>Hijikata Katsuji. Friends call you Katsu.
>Kita Chikakazu. Friends call you Chika.
>Yasuda Sakubei. Friends call you Saku.
>Ikeda Mitsumasa. Friends call you Mitsu.

Ashigaru Mitsu, here we go.

[Gained 1x Half Ashigaru Armor]

Well well well… Ikeda Mitsumasa, son of Ikeda Tsunamasa. I’m afraid that your father died not too long ago in the battlefield. You found his body after the deed was done and took a memento from him before the burial. His ashigaru armor, which was much finer than yours due to his long years serving. Some would call it looting, but your pa would’ve been proud to know that the one who looted his body was none other than his own son.

[Gained 1x Full Ashigaru Armor]

After the battle and after all was said and done, you were kicked out of the samurai’s army as he had no more need for you. You picked up your…

>Katana. A single-edged sword, but this one has not been folded a thousand times. It cuts very nicely through unarmored opponents though, and if dexterous enough, you can take on more armored opponents easily.
>Yumi. A bow, plain and simple. Supposedly the Samurai’s preferred weapon, but lucky ashigaru can find a yumi in the battlefield and keep it as loot. It’s cumbersome to use, but it can snipe most foes from quite the distance.
>Kanabo. It’s a staff, it’s made of metal, and it’s got spikes at the end. It crushes anything it touches, so long as it touches it. You’re quite the hulk of a man to be able to carry something like that.

Now that you’ve been sent away, it’s time to find some good place to go. Hmmm. You’ve got options on your hand:

>A Castle Town. A good place to find samurai who want mean stuff done. These jobs are usually more of a hit on someone or something, not so risky, but it could get you exiled from the place if you’re caught red-handed.
>A village. Sometimes villages are beset by bandits, rogue ashigaru, a kidnapping, or a familial dispute. It’s risky to go on your own, but you could make something out of it.
>Find an army. Battle is good place for loot, as long as you keep yourself out of much trouble, but not so much that the leading samurai calls you a coward and cuts you down.

You picked up your katana. It’s a trusty weapon that you looted from much more experienced ashigaru that your father killed a while ago. They’re expensive to make, but not that efficient a weapon. It’s very easy to carry around and is pretty imposing to the layman though, so you have that going for you.

[Got 1x Old Katana]

Nice gear you’ve got. Now to find more work for a lone ashigaru. Surely there’s a samurai going around in the lands nearby hoping to snatch some land from the closest other samurai around.

It’s time to head out and see to whom the red thread of fate ties you, at least for the next few weeks or months.

The trek was long but you eventually found an army. Its ashigaru say that their young lord is seeking to attack some old samurai and take over his lands. Apparently the old man has grown too complacent and this younger man wants to teach him what it means to be in an era of Warring States. Oh well, all the more jobs for you.

The young samurai’s called Akita Toshisue, and the old samurai is Gamo Tadasato. Interesting enough.
As you merge you and your belongings into the army’s camp, you notice the number of soldiers here is around 400. It seems this Akita guy doesn’t need much more than that to take on Gamo, most of the soldiers here are young, though you notice a few veterans with a full armor. Considering the numbers, you’ll be more noticeable, but have more of a role too. You wonder how you should tackle on this battle.

>Let’s be cautious. Low risk with average loot. You’ll be opportunistic and won’t get noticed.
>Maybe this Akita guy could be a ticket to higher standing, let’s try to show off. Average risk with average loot. You’ll be defiant and might get noticed.

Alright, this is it. This guy’s young, his army’s small and he’s a fully-fledged samurai. You won’t live for years as a petty ashigaru trudging through one battlefield after the next. You’ll either be noticed or die trying. Well, if things get real bad, it might be worth it to -not- die trying. You headed to the center of the camp and warned the retainers of Akita that you were going to head to the frontlines and hoped to get noticed by them. They seemed intrigued by the fact that you had a full armor, but brushed you off as another brazen young lad thirsting for glory. You went back to your spot in the camp, yelling your name and declaring your stay in the frontline.

With that said, around a week passed as you marched, encamped, marched again, encamped again, the army grew to host 100 more as some more loners joined in. You were kept fed by Akita’s supply wagons and slept in relative safety in the outer areas of the camps.
From what your father taught you, Akita and Gamo are probably eyeing each other up and trying to find good terrain to fight in. This could take weeks, or even months, depending on the battle’s importance. But soon you realized that the week that passed was more than enough for old man Gamo.

It was late in the evening when the camp was attacked. You and your comrades started hearing yells close to the northern section of the camp. Akita and his men headed out of the center of the camp and rallied the troops. You made sure to get a spot closest to the center and front.

As you reached the attacked zone, it was a horrid display of death and gore, but not being the first time you saw something like this, you steeled yourself and unsheathed your katana. The rest of the ashigarus were armed with many kinds of weapons. The enemy had also rallied after taking a heavy toll on your allies. They seemed willing to withdraw, but Akita would have none of it, he ordered the lot of you to march forward to the attack. As you walked forward, you spotted Gamo and his entourage at the back of the enemy's line. He had a small elite force of ashigaru in front of him, and a few younger ones in the forward rows, but his forces were smaller than Akita's by a longshot. It seems Akita was planning on this, somehow. Right? Or maybe Gamo goofed at some point and is now in this rather bad situation.

First stage of battle, the charge. How do you do?

Fuck it, that 88 roll is good enough.

You clutched at your chest as you advanced forward with the rest of the lads. Akita’s retainers were barking orders and encouragements from the back. Gamo’s old guard had good enough loot to keep a man fed for months, or so they said.

Gamo’s men kept themselves to their position, keeping spearmen at the front and others at the back. A few arrows flew to and fro, but Akita had brought shield-men who kept the front safe from arrows.

It seems the enemy realized that their inability to win the ranged exchange was too much, they decided to withdraw and head for a nearby forest… But Akita would have none of it, he ordered you all to charge.

‘UOOOOOOOH!’ echoed through the lines of Akita as they ran headfirst into danger. You put your katana up and yelled your name. ‘I AM IKEDA MITSUMASA’.

It was so intense and brazen, this charge. You heard the retainer’s orders being swarmed by the yells all around. The odds were on your side, sure enough. The young spearmen at the front of Gamo’s line were breaking as they saw you charging in, they tried to get behind one another in succession and that just led to more and more confusion.

You plunged through the lines and started cutting foes through and through. The spearmen were scared to the bones, and other ashigaru tried their best to hold a cohesive line but it was futile. Akita was winning the gamble. You couldn’t say how many you’ve cut down, but you’re sure it’s in the tens along with the rest of the frontliners.

As battle went on, exhaustion started to grip you and a man offered himself to replace you in the thick of the fighting, you duly accepted and sat on an enemy’s corpse to catch a breather. The smell of dust and blood permeated the air around you. You asked around and were told that all that remained was pursuing Gamo and his elite, who had broken off to flee. Akita was thinking about using his own retainers to give pursuit and finish them off, but he needed more men as Gamo was accompanied by veteran ashigaru.

A spearman with the looks of a retainer came by you and your men. “Good fighting out there, I’ve seen some of you plowing through foes like they were butter. Any of you want to join lord Akita in finishing off Gamo? I, Harada Taneyoshi, will put in word for you."

You step up to the spearman. “I, Ikeda Mitsumasa, will join the pursuit.”

The spearman welcomes you with a smile hiding a certain guile. “I hope you’re ready to fight some tough enemies, boy. You’re rather young.”

“Anything for lord Akita’s recognition.” You respond.

Harada Taneyoshi nods and you get behind him along with a few more ashigaru who were spurred on to bravery by your words. He walks around the battlefield seeking some more men, and when he’s fine with the numbers, you’re taken to Akita. Akita is young, but he seems gruff, serious and lacking in patience, he’s got a yumi on his back and a quiver full of arrows on his belt.

“These are the ones, Taneyoshi?”

Taneyoshi nods and bows to lord Akita, the rest of you follow suit after a wave of his hand.

“Hmph. Fine, they look able enough to do the part.” Akita turns his horse to a side and begins speaking to you and the rest of the ashigaru directly.

“Listen, ashigaru. All of the country sees you as vultures and cowards who seek naught but corpses to loot. If you prove them wrong today, I, Akita Toshisue, will reward you most handsomely.” With that, he spurs his horse onwards and two dozen horsemen join him, all well geared and armed.

Harada Taneyoshi looks back towards you and the rest of the ashigaru here standing. “We’ll let filth mop up the filth while we take the glory. Let’s go!” Taneyoshi mounts his horse and leads the footmen onwards to follow lord Akita into the sparse forest in front of you.
With Akita in sight, you suddenly see them redeploying, splitting into two groups and advancing back, with a few of them being taken down from their horses. Lord Akita returns, exchanges a few words with Harada, then Harada warns the lot of you to get in formation.

You see it in the distance, the retainers of lord Akita who fell are getting killed by some ashigaru. These guys look like they’re out of this world, rather big, strong and bulky, but few in numbers. They’re the rear of Gamo’s escapee ‘army’, and they’re headed straight for you.
Akita leaves to circle around them, using their horses’ maneuverability. But the bigger element in this tactic is you, the fodder that has to withstand these tough ashigaru while Akita and his men snatch the weakened Gamo.

Harada Taneyoshi smiles. “You wanted lord Akita’s recognition? See if you can get it.”

Gamo’s ashigaru seem to be in a hurry to fight you. They’re hoping to tie in the footmen so Gamo can have an easier time running away. These boys are in it to win, even if they’re outnumbered by far.

You maintain formation and so do Gamo’s elite, though they split into three squads ready to give hell. Their center squad start gunning for the frontline in but an instant. You stood there in the second line and saw how the guy in front of you got impaled by a spear tip, the ashigaru holding the spear lets go of it and takes out a katana to deal with you. You deftly parry some blows but after a few attempts, you find yourself overwhelmed. All you can do is defend yourself from this guy, and even then you’re struggling to keep up with his movements. You felt a few cuts brush up your arm and chest, but you’re also able to deal a few blows to the man.

Eventually, the enemy stops their onslaught and seems more willing to simply maintain themselves like this. Your troop wants to surround them, but you notice Harada on his horse stopping them from doing so. This would be a piss easy win if you were to surround them, why is Harada…?

Harada reforms part of your group to prepare to meet the unseen attack from the left and right orchestrated by the two remaining enemy squads. Harada had noticed it way before any of you did, but being atop a horse probably helped.

As the battle goes on your group successfully starts beating back these expert ashigaru. Numbers count for a lot, and slowly they fall to your blades even if they take two or three for every one your allies kill.

In the thick of the fighting, as you rest in the third line you notice something, there in the back of their lines. Some of them are retreating back and heading to… Horses? Since when are those horses there? Some lads seem to have brought them. Wait a minute… There’s a well-armored old man with a strong beard heading there, and he’s guarded by a few particularly gruff ashigaru. And they’re going to escape on horses? Brought by servants?

Oh shit. That guy is not an ashigaru. That’s a damn samurai, a big honcho. Damn, it would be risky to fight him, but if you were to win and get his head, there’s a lot of glory in it.

>Gather some resting ashigaru and split off to fight them.

Seriously, FUCK this captcha shit.

You gather up some ashigaru telling them about what you saw, they’re willing to help protect you as you head towards Harada. He is fixated on the three fronts of the battle as he sips some water from a skin. He looks at you bewildered. “I thought you were out for glory? Why are you here?”

“There’s no time!” You reply. “There’s a samurai retreating in the back, he looks like a big guy!”

“A -what-?” He looks towards where you’re pointing. “Aw hell, there’s a big prize for us. Probably the guy they left back here to command these ashigaru.” He puts his water skin down to his belt and hoists his spears to rally his two retainers.

He looks down to you. “Are you willing to come?”

“Yes. Me and these guys here will help you, lord Harada.”

He grins and spurs on his horse joined in by his two retainers, you follow in a sprint along with the men.

The big honcho was getting ready to saddle his horse when he saw Harada running in at full speed. The few ashigaru who had escorted him formed a line right in front of the old man, who continued to saddle in.

You don’t have much time to think. Let’s see what you come up with while accompanied with your ashigaru.

This is it, for real now. This is the big opportunity. The ashigaru are delaying Harada and the old man is spurring his horse to get away from the fighting, if he does get away it’s over. There’s only a few who can stop him. You and the ashigaru.
You encourage the ashigaru to join you in pursuing the horseman instead of attacking his bodyguards. They seem weirded out by your orders, but you successfully rouse them to the attack.

You pursue the old man who looks back at you with disdain. You’re blocking his initial escape route and he turns right into a clearing to circle around you. You won’t be able to reach him, damn it all. You take a look at Harada and see him struggle with the ashigaru bodyguards. Unwilling to let go of this opportunity, you continue on your sprint towards the old man, who, again, has to push his horse further out of his planned route.

As the old man seems more and more out of your reach, you hear the ‘thwang’ of a bow and an arrow flying in from the forest and planting itself in the old man’s chest, who tumbles down on the grassy field as he falls from his horse. Yikes, if he survived that, he’s lucky.

More sounds of bows being fired ring out and the ashigaru who were fighting Harada fall dead on the ground. Harada sits down to mourn one of his retainers, who fell in order to save him from a cunning blow by the ashigaru.

Meanwhile, you arrive right where the old man is and see him grumble and wince in pain in a pool of his own blood. The horse archers coming out of the forest are easily recognizable. You see Akita and another two, the rest are finishing the fight against the ashigaru.
Akita spares you a stare before getting down from his horse, closely accompanied by two veteran retainers of his who are much older than he. He approaches the old man and takes a look at him. “That’s Gamo Tadasato for sure. The snake knew I’d get to him in a horse pursuit, no matter what.”

The retainers pick up Gamo and put him atop a horse to carry him away. Akita looks at you before getting on his. Shit, this was the biggest prize one could get, and the one to get it was Akita himself.

“What are you doing here, ashigaru? Running after a lone horseman to steal his valuables?”

“Lord Akita, we knew this man was a samurai. We warned lord Harada and he asked us to join in the pursuit. Sadly, lord Harada was kept busy by the able ashigaru who protected lord Gamo and we had to pursue on foot.”

Akita’s expression does not change at all during the explanation, he doesn’t seem to care overmuch. “Well. At least you made him an easier target and saved me some time pursuing him on horseback. Go and tell the men they can start looting.”

You nod and head back into formation. You see Harada being calmed by his other retainer and some of Akita’s men too. It’s not a good time to go and see him, so you decide to abide by your orders and be done with it.

You remember a fine piece you’ve seen during the battle. The yari that pierced right through the ashigaru in front of you even though the man was in full armor. Though its wielder was a strong fellow, he was greatly aided by the fine craftsmanship on that spear. You head right out for it and tear it out of the corpse where it is lodged and keep it close to you at all times.

[Got 1x Finely Crafted Yari]

Along with the rest, you try and find some sort of valuable or trinket that you can use or sell. There are some things laying and trinkets which the soldiers used to remember their homes, but most of them are worthless when it comes to down to monetary value. You do get spares to replace the parts of your armor chipped by the ashigaru who fought you in the forest.

As post-battle arrives, you realize the old Katana you were using got really battered, you’ll have to see a blacksmith to get it repaired. Bummer, the thing held on thoroughly during the fight.

[Old Katana became Battered Old Katana]

After the looting came the burial of the dead, lord Akita saw it done to the end. Seems like a religious type. After a few prayers came the celebration at night, men dancing and singing littered the whole camp while the wounded were tended and the lords spoke of future plans.

As the party went on, you were approached by lord Harada, who hails you with a frown and spear in hand.

“I’ve told lord Akita of the exploits of the clever ashigaru named Ikeda Mitsumasa who forewent the aid of me, lord Harada, in order to get Gamo by himself. He said I could do whatever I wanted with you, but he’d have no participation in it.”

You feel a tingle of fear run through you. This fucker blamed you for the death of his retainer or what? It would’ve all been for nothing if Gamo hadn’t been caught anyhow.

“My lord… Please forgive my lack of cunning, I thought those ashigaru were done for with your presence.” You cautiously get up and face Harada.

Harada’s frown turns into a smile. “Heh, I got you.”

Holy fuck, you nearly shit your pants. There was no way you would’ve survived an encounter like this if Harada wanted you dead.

Harada approaches you and puts an arm around you. “Listen, Mitsu. I’ve lost a retainer due to your cunning tactic, though it allowed lord Akita to kill his prey.” Harada’s smile does not disappear, but his general tone and expression is odd.

“If you’d just come to help me, we would’ve slain the ashigaru with no issue, but it is true that Gamo would’ve probably disappeared into the thick of the forest.” Harada continues.

“Nonetheless, a retainer of mine died due to your actions in the fight.” Harada stops here and eyes you up.

You shift uncomfortably under Harada's grip. “Lord Harada, what is it you want from me?”

Harada laughs for a bit. “You’ll be my new retainer, Ikeda. And you have no choice in the matter. All I say you will obey, and you’ll become part of the Akita Clan for as long as I breathe.”

Ah fuck. Samurai are crazy.

=AFTERWORD=
Since I like this era of Japan so much, I decided to make afterwords after each session in case anyone wants to read 'em. If some big weebs want to correct me on the facts I throw out, do so, most of my sources come from the internet.

Samurai during the Sengoku Jidai were not a defined social class. Samurais were ‘warriors’, members of society that lived under the code of bushido and were expected to uphold its values. A plain soldier from humble beginnings could eventually be called a samurai by his peers if he received the blessing of another samurai. The clearest example is Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who was born to a humble life and destined to become a simple monk, but rose up to become one of the three ‘great unifiers’ of Japan in the period through wit and luck.

This lack of regulation over who could be called a samurai led to a large percentage of the population to be considered of the ‘samurai’ class. Including close relatives such as wives and children, estimates range from 4% to 8% of the 8-12 million population that Japan hosted back then. As a comparison in the same era, only 0.25% of Britain’s population was considered of noble birth, the European social class to which the samurai are often compared. Very few of these samurai had lands or were rich at all, and very few upheld the bushido code, though the lack of a central authority impeded any serious measures against this.

It wouldn’t be until the very late 1500s that samurai had a clear distinction with the common folk, as the very same Toyotomi Hideyoshi forbade the use of weapons by the peasantry and made social mobility nigh impossible. A bit ironic considering social mobility is exactly what made him rise from a humble and thrifty young man to de facto ruler of Japan. From there on, samurai usually indicated their social class by wearing a Daisho: A big sword (katana) and a small sword (wakizashi or tanto). Though this wasn’t enforced until the Tokugawa Shogunate decreed that samurai had to wear it while on official duty.

Though many think that our vision of the samurai as the aimless ronin seeking purpose belongs to the Sengoku Jidai, it’s often one more fitting for the Tokugawa Shogunate.

Many samurai, mostly those who opposed the new Shogunate at one point or another, lost any semblance of power due to the end of the conflict and the efficient social restructuring conducted by Ieyasu Tokugawa and his heirs. They were forced to aimlessly wander the relatively peaceful lands in order to find any form of work.

We might have impressed the lord enough to take us as something more than Ashigaru, but I feel like our skills aren't what won us the honor.

It might not be the most glorious thing to do, but we might want to seek actual training from one of the veterans, or maybe find a master to teach us. Also literacy, we really should learn to read if we want to serve the clan properly.

>Akita Toshisue
>Akita Toshisue (秋田俊季, 1598 - February 14, 1649) was the 2nd Akita daimyō of Shishido Domain, 1st daimyō of Miharu Domain and 3rd hereditary chieftain of the Akita clan. His courtesy title was Kawachi-no-kami, and later Izu-no-kami, his Court rank was Junior Fifth Rank, Lower Grade. He was the eldest son of Akita Sanesue, and fought as a soldier in the Tokugawa forces at the 1614 Siege of Osaka. His father was exiled to Izu Province in 1630 due to discontent with the policies of Shōgun Tokugawa Iemitsu, and he was appointed daimyō of Shishido Domain in 1631. In 164, the Tokugawa shogunate ordered the Akita clan to relocate to Miharu Domain with an increase in kokudaka to 55,000 koku . His wife was a daughter of Matsudaira Nobuyoshi of Tsuchiura Domain. He died in 1649 while on duty at Osaka Castle and his grave is at the temple of Kōken-in in Miharu.

Your sudden hire as a retainer by a particularly drunk Harada caused some turmoil within the Akita Clan’s lower ranked retainers, but things died down after a few days when they saw how much the clan had gained by defeating the head of the Gamo clan.

Gamo Tadasato himself had been captured and the rest of the Gamo clan was forced to surrender after the loss of their army in the battle at the plains. The clan itself fled from the territories they once held along with a whole bunch of retainers of theirs. Villages and towns within their boundaries were pretty much autonomous up until Akita and his cronies showed up to impose the new order, you among them.

As Harada’s third in command, you were tasked with protecting his life with yours. It was pretty alright, you had a whole room for yourself and lots of food, including meat. Meanwhile, all you had to do was stand around Harada and look tough. It’s a nifty job, as long as no one tries to kill him.

There wasn’t much time to do any training as Harada was sent around villages and towns to exert Akita’s influence over them. That is, to take away their hard-earned crops and make them pledge their younger lads to the ashigaru life. You were technically already above the ashigaru life, the meandering days you spent with your father were gone due to your efficient behavior at the Akita-Gamo battle, as it was known in the stretches of the newly expanded Akita clan. Still, you weren’t quite the hotshot retainer, more of a tertiary retainer’s own tertiary retainer.

Harada had been unhinged for quite a while after the loss of his bodyguard. Revelries were common in his mansion and the man kept drinking himself into oblivion. That was until lord Akita himself came by to visit, you and the rest of Harada’s retainers were told to stay well away until the boss was done with Harada. Whatever it was, Harada stopped his drinking binges after that, and he was officially made governor of the small town where he was hosted.

Anyhow, your gear didn’t get much better. You were given some old samurai plates that barely covered your body and a proper helmet, a kabuto. The stains on it indicated that it wasn’t acquired in the nicest of means, but it was spooky to think you had killed its former owner.

[Got 1x Old Half Samurai Armor]

As for your weapons, you were given a new, shinier katana and a tanto to go along with it, a gift from the Akita Clan to all its new retainers. The yari you retrieved was still with you, though you didn’t have much of an idea on how to use it. Hopefully, Harada would someday get out of his depressive stupor and help you learn how to use it, but for now you had to be content with looking cool with it.

[Got 1x Normal Katana, 1x Normal Tanto]

Peace had settled in the Akita clan, but knowing its leader this was likely to not go on for long. Either that or the Gamo Clan would have a say about the recent loss of their territory, accompanied by some other bigger clan that was around this region.

Still, you enjoyed the days spent acquainting yourself with Harada’s retainers. Sunsets passed by as the lot of you chewed tips of wheat strings and discussed Harada’s mental state and the new town he governed.

Months passed, and summer rolled in. Harada got married to a girl from a family that used to be Gamo retainers, but were now trying to pledge themselves to Akita. The girl was pregnant already.

Let’s see what event will transpire, if any, during the summer…

It was early in the morning when a rider arrived at Harada’s mansion. The mood there was palpably bad. His wife was having trouble with the pregnancy and his depression was getting worse. You were stuck with guard duty at the time and made the horseman stop on his tracks.
The man lifted his horses’ reins and the animal whinnied. “I need to see lord Harada. It is urgent.”

You looked at him intrigued. “What’s so urgent to send a damn horseman in the middle of the summer? Everyone’s busy tending to crops.”
“Who are you to be asking a question like that?”

“Harada’s new retainer, Ikeda Mitsumasa. And also the guard to lord Harada’s gate. So tell me the news.”

The man seemed bothered by your presence and inquisitiveness, but he responded nonetheless.

“Lord Akita Toshisue is dead.”

You thought you shit your pants for a second, but thankfully your gut was empty. “What?”

“Let me through.” The rider ordered, somberly.

“A-Alright.” You opened the gate and headed inside with the rider. Oh shit. This was bad news. What in the heavens could even have happened? What stroke of luck is this? The bastard’s only heir was an infant and he’s got no damn brothers. Ah, curse this damned luck.
The two of you make way through the few servants who were doing servant things around the mansion. Transporting water around and cleaning rags, but who cares? Akita clan was leaderless.

You tell the other retainers about the news as you were headed in. They looked at each other in very clear discomfort. Harada’s mental state was already in really bad shape, and this was not going to help, at all.

The lot of you requested an audience with Harada while he brooded over some parchments in his room. He accepted it and headed to the audience room. The retainers sat at his side as the council was called and the messenger officially entered to bring the news to lord Harada.
“After an unfortunate hunting accident where lord Akita Toshisue fell off his horse, lord Akita perished due to a broken neck.”

An extremely uncomfortable silence reigned in the hall. Everyone looked either at the ground or at Harada, awaiting his reaction. You looked at the man. His face was emotionless, dead, all he did was stare at the messenger.

“What are Akita clan’s orders?” asked Harada.

The messenger was in a deep sweat. Harada sounded much more deranged than usual. “T-To head back to the Akita Clan’s capital and pay respects to the departed lord Akita.”

“I refuse.”

>>

Oh no. He snapped. The retainers looked at Harada in complete and utter disbelief. “My lord. We must pay respects to-“ dared one high ranking retainer.

“I said no. The Harada will officially break away from the Akita and form their own clan. We are marching to the Akita capital.”

“My lord, there are many other retainer clans under the Akita who will not accept that people such as us take over this region-“

“So what? Damn them all to hell. Many of my ashigaru fell fighting for Akita’s pompous samurai bastards. It’s high time that we got some high status and established ourselves as something more than arrow fodder. Plus, it’s highly likely that now Gamo will be coming back, if he brings in a clan too big for our shoes, we’ll offer his holdings on a platter in exchange for Akita’s old lands.”

Harada looked around the room. “Those who are with me, stay. Those who aren’t, go.” He stared at each and every one of his retainers, but he lingered for a while longer on a few, including you.

Oh man, the luck. Just… Let’s think about this.

Harada didn’t seem as insane as he explained his plans, but the past few months were anything but proof of his descent to insanity. Still, even though his numbers are lower than the rest of the Akita Clan, the rest of Akita’s retainers will probably exercise caution and not move from their lands at all. The element of surprise is totally in Harada’s side. And there’s probably some retainers of Gamo who might find this entire ordeal very agreeable and join with their own cohorts. Plus, lots of ashigaru felt loyalty towards Harada instead of Akita.

But… If it all goes south, heads will roll, and fast. What will you do?

>Stick to Harada’s side as his samurai, you owe him.
>Leave the room and become a ronin, the man’s gone insane.

I'm sticking to the canon emplacement of the Akita clan, so the Touhoku region. For Sengoku buffs; it's the region where Date clan is located, though by this period it wasn't a hotshot clan yet. In fact, we're ~15 years off from Masamune's birthdate.

You stuck to your spot. A part of you wanted to damn this all to hell and just head out to become an ashigaru again, at least your head would roll for the sake of a good pay and not for honor.

Some of the retainers didn’t stay. You’re surprised to see that the newest ones who had joined in with you did stay, as did the older ones. The ‘middle of the line’ didn’t, they got up and left in complete silence.

After the room emptied itself, Harada ordered the messenger to be put on house arrest. He then announced that all retainers would accompany him on his march around old Gamo lands to gather ashigaru willing to pledge themselves to the cause.

The sun was high up in the sky and the heat was bothersome. Your armor weighed much more during summer, and the heat made it all the more annoying to fight. Part of the reason that lords were reluctant of fighting at this time of year. You very much felt like Harada was doing a good work right now. Everywhere he went, the ashigaru knew him by name and swiftly pledged themselves to his cause. Some hate rhetoric towards the samurai here, some embodiment of the poor man’s condition there… And you had a recipe for a large army of peasants.

You saw that many of the veterans of the Gamo-Akita battle were here and joining up. They recognized you and congratulated you for a job well done back then. You thanked them and wished them the best.

As the column marched towards the east, approaching proper Akita lands, you wondered about your own position in the recently declared Harada Clan. Since this was a pretty recent clan, being a third rate retainer within this one probably didn’t net you a high status yet, but if Harada were to win and solidify his gains, you’d be one of the new hotshots in town. Might even get your own holdings to take care of as long as you remain under him, and as long as he wins.

Harada approached you and jumped down from his horse to track along with you.

“I’m happy that you stayed.”

Ever since the announcement of Akita’s death, Harada’s insane demeanor had changed to a more somber, serious one. Some would say uncaring, but the fact that he’s going on this campaign shows the exact opposite.

“You shouldn’t walk on foot my lord. We might get attacked.”

Harada chuckled. “They always target the lord’s horse in an ambush first. It disorients the entire army. My horse covers my right and you cover my left, good enough.”

Nice.

[Dutiful] / [Ambitious] (I'll let both roll for now. Just want to know what players want for good old Ikeda)

“I see.” Harada replied. He didn’t show much of a reaction to what you said, just hopped on to his horse and rejoined the front of the column. Huh, weird guy.

After a few days, the army arrived at Akita lands. From what you could see, you were a ragtag army of hundreds, though you couldn’t say how many. Somewhere around 200-400. More or less the size of Akita’s army back in the Gamo battle. Many of the ashigaru present there were here, so the remainder of the Akita clan were probably getting theirs from the surrounding regions.

You wondered if the Akita knew what was coming. Most likely, considering the situation, they’re likely on the lookout for potential invaders who caught words in the wind of Akita’s death. They’re probably rousing their own warriors at this very moment.

In Akita lands, more ashigaru from the outskirts wound up joining. These informed the army of the obvious: The Akita were also mustering all around their lands, though none of them knew their plans. You simply stuck to your job as protector of the retainer’s tents during camps, hopefully Harada had as much strategic wit as he had tactical.

One such night, you were lazily holding on to the yari you had looted so long ago. You didn’t know how to use it, but it was a good support pole for long shifts at night. You noticed something out of the ordinary inbetween all the revelry of the camp: A samurai with no armor and only the usual two swords found on them was approaching the camp of the retainers. You blocked the only entrance in the wooden palisade separating Harada’s retainer from the rest of the ashigaru. “Who goes?”

“I am a messenger from lord Ikaruga Nagakatsu, from the northernmost plains of Akita territory. I wish to relay a message to lord Harada.”

Ikaruga… Ikaruga… You do remember an Ikaruga from the north, but was he a retainer or not? “What does Ikaruga want of lord Harada?”

“To speak of truce and to support him in his bid for supremacy in these lands.”

He didn’t seem like much of a liar, but these weren’t easy times. Harada had even vetoed entry to the officer camp for anyone who was not known to him or his retainers. You were given a list of names, and Ikaruga wasn’t in them. But this might be more important than some safety rule.

“Wait here.” You told the man. Whoever he is, you first need to identify if this Ikaruga fellow is worthwhile enough to break the rule imposed by lord Harada.

You tell the man to keep his distance and turn around and try to see someone who could help out. He nods. You hear ashigaru that have gathered around to see what was going on with this lone samurai, but the retainers seem to all be at their tents. Yet…

Yet you hear the fucker’s blade rasping out quick as a flash. You feel something trigger inside you. Strength and dexterity emanate as you pick up your spear quick as lightning, plant your feet on the ground and twist them and your upper body around. The man was still on his way to make the cut when you pierce his throat with enough force to leave his head hanging on a thread, the surprise on his face does not remain for long: He collapses on the floor, dead.

Holy shit, how did you do that? The ashigaru are looking at you in awe except for a few yelling about the possibility of more intruders. You stand in the awkward position you used to attack him and let your heart calm down. Your breathing slows and you stand back, looking at the bastard.

The retainers come out to see what all the ruckus is about, all they can see is your bloodied spear tip and the dead samurai on the ground. Harada pushes everyone away, backed up by two bulky rough-looking retainers. “What’s the meaning of this?” He views the dead man sprawled in the ground, then looks at you. “Are you well, Ikeda?”

“Yes.” You respond, though you are a bit shaken. “This man was a murderer, my lord.”

Harada nods. “Good work. I didn’t know you were good with a yari.”

“I’m not, my lord. Never used one.”

Harada laughs. “You’ve got a knack for it then, to have only pierced his throat and no more. I’ll teach you how to properly use one if we win this war.” With that and a little two-finger salute, he returns to his tent.

The ashigaru pick up the corpse and some seem to look at you with a bit of dread. Days later, it seems you’re now known as the ‘Oni Horosha’ in the rank and file. The ‘Demon Vagrant’. I mean, you kind of look like a vagrant with your hurriedly put together armor. Some of the bolder ashigaru, knowing your low status in the retainer ranks, have even to referred to you directly as ‘Yari Oni’, the spear demon.

A bit overblown, it was just a single feat, but it must’ve been quite a spectacle to see. You hope you don't have to prove your skills anytime soon.

The attempted murder was enough of a confirmation that the Akita army was close. Either that or a lone samurai wanted revenge for Harada’s betrayal of his lord. The former theory was confirmed when, finally, the scouts report that the castle-town of the Akita clan is protected by an army. Counting around 300-400 ashigaru of their own, with scattered reinforcements coming a few days away with the same numbers.

Harada deploys his troops around the town, surrounding it from all sides. The town is circular in nature and surrounded by plains and scattered trees and forests. Within the deeper reaches of it lies the castle of the Akitas. The grand prize that would give Harada Clan some legitimacy.

Some of the formations in Harada’s surrounding troops are more dense, packing a bigger punch. You’re assigned to one of these, Harada hoped that you’d lead from the front as the glorious ‘Yari Oni’. You insisted that was just beginner’s luck, but he shut you up and ordered you to get back in the ranks. What a reminder that you’re a poor man in a big and uncaring world, you have to brag about something you don’t even have.

Within the town, the scouts report that the Akita retainers are preparing to mount a hasty defense. Knowing that, Harada relayed orders: A night-dawn attack.

Night-dawn attacks are tricky. It means your army has to sleep during the evening, wake up and eat at early hours of the morning, then charge in right before the dawn. The enemy will be struggling to get up, still drowsy and on empty stomachs, in order to fight back.

Harada’s army prepared. The evening passed uneventfully then came early night. You’re technically a third-rate retainer, so you are supposed to get in the front and fight, but you also have a bunch of ashigaru under your care and the battlefield is quite wide, Harada’s retainers will be stretched for resources. Harada does want you to fight the enemy directly though. Decisions, decisions…

It was time to choose a get-up for the battle.

>Yari and the half-samurai armor. Make a show for the ashigaru’s morale.
>Katana and half-samurai armor. The ashigaru will recognize you though you’ll sacrifice some limb protection.
>Katana and full-ashigaru armor. Gotta keep yourself alive, ashigaru know who they’re fighting for already.

And battle behavior:

>Bold. You’ll risk your life more, but you’ll heighten the troops morale. Harada will notice you even more.
>Middle-ground. You’ll put yourself at risk a few times when you see the ashigaru falter, otherwise you’ll keep yourself safe and keep a good overview of the battlefield.
>Cautious. You have to keep a look-out on the battlefield from the back. Entering the frontlines only when absolutely necessary.

You pick up your yari and half-samurai armor. Being at the frontlines with this will be quite the show. You parade around your unit, sitting at the edge of the small forest you hosted yourselves at and looking on at the town of the Akitas. You know the place relatively well from the little time you spent there as Harada’s retainer before heading off to Gamo territory again.

The ashigaru surround you in a protective formation. One of the elders, around his thirties, most likely, approaches you with a broad smile. “What does the Yari Oni think of this? Lord Harada is bold to take on the Akitas like this, but he gave all the ashigaru here enough hope to take out these snobby samurai.”

“All I think of this is that we have to stick to our duty and obey lord Harada’s orders.” You respond. “That will get us somewhere.”

The man nods and looks towards the town with you. The orders to get in formation are given and you group up along with the rest of the men. It’s time. A deep breath. One-two, all limbs are checked. We’re in tip-top condition.

You lift your Yari in the air as you see the other units in formation as torches are lit in the trees. Now yell, that lifts up morale every time.

“UOOOOOOOOOOOH” You let all the air of your lungs out and your ashigaru accompany you soon after. Now break into a run and let the tidal wave wash over the enemy.

One foot, then the other, and you’re in a full sprint with a horde of ashigaru following behind brazenly. You see the rest of the lines breaking into the charge along with yours and the first yells from the enemy are heard.

Oh no. You realize as you hear them yell. They’re not surprised, they’re calm, even. You start to slow down as you are about to enter the town. Your unit, somewhat confused, slows down you.

An ashigaru asks what’s wrong, and an arrow pierces his chest.

They knew. These fuckers knew perfectly what was going on, what in the hell?

You call up your men to surround you and get in the town as swiftly as possible. The archers are going to launch a wave of arrows after this first one, this one was the spotter. Your men rush in, you hear screams coming from the rest of the units, too soon and too many, they ate up arrows for brunch, it seems.

Thankfully, with some maneuvering and a bit of luck, your men are able to circumvent the archer positions and give them death. You’re in the first line and plant your yari in a few as they struggle to reach for their melee weapons.

You head up with your men towards the meeting spot of your flank, the right flank. And find that only a few of the units destined here arrive. The rest show no sign of life. You hear struggles coming from all around the town.

Your father warned you about battles in town: They quickly turn into chaos.

Cont.

The retainers commanding the rest of the units are also newbies like you. Proper ashigaru who saw frontline battling and smelled the trick as you did. They’re somewhat confused though, and are heavily arguing about what should be done. The retainers do see you as an imposing force as the Yari Oni, so your word carries more weight. They all look up to you.

Man, you’re only 18. You still have to find a good lass to bed and have kids with, not command dozens of ashigaru.

The elder ashigarus would like to exercise caution, they know the prudent thing to do is to just retreat back into the trees, but the enemy would mount a counterattack and the enemy reinforcements are days off. It would be postponed suicide. They also know that the young ones will obey you, showoff.

>We must secure victory, even if pyrrhic. Pick up the stragglers that arrived to the meeting point and head further in to find the commander of the defense. Give him death.
>We must secure our current position. Take over this part of town and await for more stragglers and messengers, even if it takes hours.
>We must secure survival, even if it would risk our chances of victory. Rally with the rest of the units. Try to find Harada and act as one cohesive force.

You announce your plans to both retainers and ashigaru present in the town square. They look at each other and wonder if it was Harada who was insane or if it was you. But deep inside, it’s an easy guess that it’s do or die, and if it’s going to be die, might as well do so in a hail of glory. Right?

Slowly but surely, the ashigaru approach you and form up. The city has started to burn as dawn springs up from the horizon. This is good, it means that allied troops have pierced through somehow and are battling within the city. You’re not alone at least. A few more stragglers join in before you’re set to go and your march begins.

The city is eerily quiet outside of the distant screams. It seems that many civilians have fled rather than facing the invading army, good choice, really. The lot of you find a few enemies, but they all seem to head towards another side of the city, screaming about the enemy general having been found. It seems Harada thought of regrouping and slowly advancing towards the enemy. A good choice to keep the men’s morale up, it’s not so much about the real numbers in battle, but rather the numbers you can actually see yourself.

The unit you’re commanding is successful at sneaking through the town, you can feel how close you are to the castle right now and sure enough, there it is. The ground itself has been elevated and its walls are quite the sight. Your men hide out of instinct, castle walls are prone to leaking out arrows, you see. You give a good look to the walls and see the path to head to the castle gates, heavily guarded by both retainers and ashigaru, the gates themselves are open. You’d count at least two dozen here, against the three dozen you gathered yourself.

Still, if the gates close, it’s all over, you’ll be surrounded from all sides. Though it’s likely that this battle’s commander is hiding up there and giving out orders from that position.
The retainers are trying to hatch up a plan but they see, or rather hear, a chance. Whatever remains of Harada’s fighting force is heading towards the castle as well. The two dozen at the gate are starting to get nervous, and sending out some of their own to see what is going on there. Their eyes fixed on the sources of the noise.

We are the Yari Oni’s division! What will we do?

>Charge up now while they’re distracted and haven’t readied for battle, before the enemy commander has any chance to hide.
>Wait for the main force to approach further, then spring up from the shadows to reinforce them. Our impulse will drive them to greater heights and allow us to fully take the castle.

Harada is stressing out the resistance pretty hard back there. The messengers that come back sometimes have wounds on them and tell somewhat grim news for them, though they do say that the resistance is keeping up with the enemy somewhat.

When the next few messengers head out, you decide it’s your opportunity to strike. You tell the men to move up in a quick whisper, and so they do. The cover of the buildings helps you greatly as you go forward. As soon as that disappears though, you break into a silent run along with your men, a charge but with no screaming.

By the time one of them looks towards you, you and your frontline are shanking some of the ashigaru closer to you. The retainers above sound the alarm but with your numbers you are quick to overwhelm most of them. Some surrender and plead for their lives instead of dying gracefully with a shank of a spear tip, you decide it’s best to let Harada decide on that.

The gates had no time to close, and the men inside retreated towards the mansion’s courtyard. There, you see something of the ordinary. A whole bunch of gruff-looking retainers, probably a dozen hard Akita loyalists armed to teeth, and in the middle of them…

A woman, armed with traditional bugeisha armor and a naginata. Your unit stands still, frozen for an instant as they see the peculiar scene in front of them. You know the element of surprise is lost by now, they are reluctant to fight a woman.

She speaks. “The traitors have arrived here. I am Lady Oya, and this is my son’s castle that you assault so soon after his father's death. Will you divulge your name or are you too much of a snake?”

The men around her unsheathe their weapons and prepare for the coming battle.

You take up your yari and approach, lady Oya orders her men to stand down and picks her naginata. She swirls it around showing off how easily she wields it, eventually planting herself into a proper pose for fighting.

But you charged. Ashigaru instincts, really. Show-offs die first, and she decided to show off. Your spear is right at her belly when she deviates it ever so slightly up and left. You got her with the oldest battlefield trick in the book, but her skill still shows.

There’s a sickening crunch as your yari hits her right arm right above the elbow, her forearm is completely lopped off and she falls unconscious without making a single sound. The way she bleeds, she’ll be dead in mere minutes unless the bleeding stops.

The retainers loyal to Lady Oya are furious at your unethical display during the duel, but you’re quick to note that this was no practice fight, but a battlefield duel. They waver in their attempts to counterattack though, as the sounds of many footsteps come from behind you, running at full speed.

You see a badly hurt and hastily bandaged Lord Harada behind you. He got hit in the head hard it seems. As the other retainers who were with you rush to explain the situation, he approaches you with his spear at his shoulder. You see he’s bloodied all over, both his and enemy blood, but he’s still standing and strong. Behind him are dozens upon dozens of ashigaru and retainers, worn down by the fighting, some carried by the shoulder.

He approaches you, you notice the arrow in his hand, there’s something at the tip. Oh goodness.

It’s an eye. Harada’s eye, that’s why there’s such a big red blotch around his eye cavity.

He lifts it up to show it to you. “It seems I got myself some breakfast.” And without a second thought, he takes his eye to his mouth and gives it a big bite, chews and swallows. Now only half the eye remains.

“A bit salty, I’ll keep the rest for later.” He says. “Someone bandage and save Lady Oya. Kill the rest of the retainers, whoever brings me a head of theirs gets a promotion.”

The retainers and ashigaru are quick to follow his orders, and the retainers of Lady Oya mount a strong defense before finally being cut down or pelted by arrows. The sight is somewhat grim, since the soldiers are now fighting over who killed who and how.

“Well.” Harada says. “It seems the Yari Oni has something to his name.” He walks around and observes -his- castle, which is bathed in the bright red sunlight of dawn. “Without you, the Lady would’ve holed herself up and we’d have lost that many more men to trying to assault the walls. Good job.” He says.

“After we’re done with whoever is still loyal to the Akitas and the political chaos, you’ll be rewarded.” He winks.

“Handsomely.”

His laugh afterwards sounds so very deranged, you get a shiver down your spine. The men who were with you gather around you to praise you. Soon the festivities will start over this victory.
