/qst/ - Quests

Previous threads: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=One%20Piece%20Bounty%20Photographer%20Quest
Cover-art kindly provided by our noble artiste, Draw-anon, who kindly took time off repainting the Sistine Chapel for us. Look upon our prettyboy protagonist. Look upon his devilish smile and despair.

In last thread’s episode of Dad Collector Quest, our hero ENSIGN HARRY FLASHMAN found himself held hostage by a dick (Sworddad2), so he promptly kicked him in said bodily part. Then everyone lived in peace and harmony for about five seconds, until the Revolutionary Nation attacked (or something). After the ensuing beatdown of the Marines, Flashy found himself kidnapped by SmoDad in an exciting adventure to beat pirates up for escaping, and crossed over to the Grand Line, where he began the process of acquiring dad6, Doctor Lighthouse. He also deeply progressed the Sworddad1 route by investigating Klaus’ backstory. There were also some fights or training, and a mermaid, but who cares? More importantly, will Flashy catch up with the Strawhats and gain Sworddad2 and KickDad? ONLY TIME WILL TELL.

We now return you to your scheduled idiocy.

>look after yourself papa

“Just...take promise you'll take care of yourself more?” It’s the main thing you’re worried about right now. You COULD maybe ask him to take over your latrine duties as well, but you wouldn’t wish that on anyone.

Waaaaaait. Actually... You perk up, excited. “Oh, and teach me all that cool shit you offered me earlier, I'm really interested in learning Haki and that personal style you were talking about!”

Klaus side-eyes you. “Yeeeah... about the Haki; you know you’ve already got it, right?”

What.

“I dunno when it activated, must have been recently, but have you been a bit better at predicting people in combat?”

What.

“It works better when you’re calm and focused, and you’re kind of an excitable kid, so I guess you’re not doing it on purpose.”

What.

“Anyway, sure, I’ll teach you. Now you’ve got that book, you’ll be learning it anyway... might as well have someone on hand to make sure you’re doing it right. “

What.

“My sword-style... I wasn’t gonna teach you it for a little while longer, but fuck it. You’re picking things up so fast, and with the transfer to combat.... as soon as you can reliably cut metal, I’ll start teaching it. Okay?”

What.

A hand waves in front of your face. “Prettyboy? Did you die?”

What.

“Seriously, if you just had a stroke or something, Smo-kun’s gonna be so pissy with me...”

“Sure, he- wait.” Klaus pauses in the middle of passing it over, but at least his hand has dropped now. “Are you just planning on drinking all my booze?”

“Use your Haki to see what I think of that,” you mutter, grabbing the flask. Then you throw it back and start drinking.

And drinking.

And drinking.

Klaus stares at you as you steadily down the contents in one long breath, your eyes fixed on a distant world where batshit stuff like activating your Haki without realizing it doesn’t happen.

>please don’t get drunk, papaSmo only has one ship

”Loguetown - I don’t know what happened.” You stare down at the empty flask, remembering just a few months ago, when you were... well. The bottom of pretty much everything. Great at the regulations side of things, shit at everything else. The idiot who was only tolerated because it meant no-one else was the bottom of the class. The guy who picked up a pistol in training and nearly blew his own foot off. The guy who never got letters or Den Den calls from home. The guy who didn’t have anyone turn up to graduation. “The Academy was just... I dunno. Not good. And I’m not drunk! Believe me, you, and every other person on this ship, will know when I'm drunk.”

“That sounds ominous.” Klaus leans back, legs swinging gently over sides of the crate. “So.. is there anything else you wanna talk about, prettyboy? I’m not really great at... the social kind of stuff, but I can try.”

... Huh.

Setting the flask down, you pull the compass out of your pocket instead, holding it up for Klaus to see, and popping it open, tilting it so he can see the inscription. “... can you use your Haki to find out who R is?”

Klaus just looks at the compass, reading the message. Then his eyes flicker back up to you, apologetic. “That’s... really not how it works. Sorry.”

Wow. He didn’t even call you prettyboy.

“Yeah.” You flick it closed, shoving the compass back into your pocket, voice flat. “Figured that was asking too much.”

Klaus shifts awkwardly on the crate. “Maybe I could... look into it? I mean, that obviously belonged to a Marine, by the symbol, so... it’s been a long time since I got out, but I still know some guys. Maybe one of ‘em might know something.”

You swallow. “You could do that?”

“It’s not like I’m promising results. But if it was close to Marineford, he was- is - probably an officer, and that’s a lot easier than finding an infantry-man.”

The idea of maybe, possibly finding your father. That was one that... that you gave up on a long time ago. When you realized that you were being a stupid, immature kid with delusional fantasies. And despite that, when you signed up for the Academy, that stupid little hope flared up again, like it had never left, like one of the teachers would look at your face and recognize some similarity there to a friend of theirs. They never did. You were always just-

Your fingers tighten on the crate’s edge. “That’d be nice. If you could.”

“I will.”

Okay. Admonishment over.

Now you step forwards, wrapping your arms around the most annoying guy you've ever met. Who freezes up for a second in confusion, and then vacillates between More Intense Confusion and Actual Desire For Non-Violent Human Contact, judging by how he alternately tenses and relaxes, until finally, tentatively, placing his arms in what might generously be called a loose hug around you.

"... We never admit to this," Klaus mutters in your ear.

"I can't believe you actually smell okay," you mutter back, enjoying the heady sensation of hugging someone you (ugh) care about.

You frown against him, giving a light sniff. "Actually, you smell kind of like - are you using Tashigi's shampoo?"

"Aaaand we're done."

"Seriously, are you stealing Ta-" You backpedal as Klaus' hands vanish from your back, reappearing on your chest to shove you gently backwards.

"Done here! I gotta go, uh, rig a hammock."

"You know that stuff is expensive, right?"

"As if I'd steal cheap shit," Klaus mumbles, opening the door and making a rapid exit.

"I KNEW IT!" You stare after his retreating back, wondering if he's going to get a fresh hammock, or just grab whoever's he finds lying around. At least you have a bed, so he can't steal yours. Probably. You hope.

... You might start locking your shampoo up though, just in case.

If there's one thing you truly appreciate about larger ships like this, it's the water filters, so you take shameless advantage of such by treating yourself to the longest, hottest shower you can manage.

Once dressed, and hair only reasonably damp, the sun is beginning to set, and watch is changing for the evening. The men have a new pep in their step with a mermaid on board (apparently some of them didn't even believe they were real until now), and the meeting's clearly over, by the sounds of Smoboss giving Mina a jitte lesson up on deck.

Awww. They grow up so fast.

... You kind of want to see her kick someone else on the balls though, just so you're not the only one.

"Just wanted to know whether we're hosting a mermaid, Smoboss," you say, tugging the lollipop you got earlier from your pocket and tossing it to Mina as she staggers past. Good thing you'd conveniently left it in your cabin before you went overboard, rather than having to rely on an off-screen temporal alteration to save it.

"You're a little early, but yes," Smoboss says, sounding irritated at your new passenger. But then, irritated is his default state, so. "Turns out her family and a few others split off from Fishman Island a few generations back, decided to start a village here for some stupid reason, and now she's the only one left. Apart from her sister, who already decided to try and get to Fishman Island by herself."

He sighs, reaching up to rub his forehead. "The spoiled brat doesn't know any self-defence, just let everyone coddle her. If she stays here, she's going to end up eaten by a seaking or enslaved. "

"So we've got her until Loguetown? What happened to the rest of her village? Was there some kind of an attack?"

"Until Loguetown, or if I can find someone trustworthy who's heading for Fishman Island. As for her village, it was pretty small, her family's been the last one left for a while. Then her parents died of natural causes."

"An illness?"

"Eaten by a seaking... pretty natural to die when that happens."

..... You're fairly sure that's not what people mean by 'natural'.

Smoboss' eyes narrow. "Then we chase them into the New World, and may the gods have mercy on them when we finally catch up."

... A strategic act of genius, this does NOT sound like.

"Uh... bossman, with all due respect, do you think you might be a bit TOO obsessed? With one pirate crew? What does HQ think of us running off?"

He folds his arms, scowling now. "Brat, how many pirate crews do you think I've ever knowingly let escape from Loguetown?"

You consider. "Um... two?"

"Wh- two? Why two?!"

You fidget. "Well, the Strawhats and the Xiaolongs?"

"The Xiaolongs came and went while I was at sea. They don't count."

"... They kind of count."

His eyes narrow further.

"Just kidding! They totally don't count! You were on patrol! Did I mention they tortured me horribly? For like, a week?"

"Uh huh," Smoboss says dryly, breathing out a writhing plume of smoke. "Look, the STRAWHATS are the only pirates who've ever escaped me. And they did that by getting rescued by goddamn Dragon of all people. If Alvida hadn't been holding those hostages while fighting Strawhat, I'd have had him. And then Dragon would have broken him out anyway, like the rest."

"So now Dragon's gone..."

You respond in a mature and professional manner, by looking Smoboss in the eye, and sticking your tongue out at him.

"Serio-?"

You lunge forwards.

Smoboss lets you, though you know he can move faster than that, even without his Devil Fruit - then, when your swords are close enough, he steps in, throwing your judgement of distance off, dropping his jitte low and to the side, forcing you to break off before you slam into the tines.

"Too cocky, brat," he says, smirking faintly.

He knows about Cut-chan, and figures you've probably given the rest of them names. Fortunately he's used to Tashigi being a weapons nut already, and doesn't see much difference in a legendary sword being named, or a shitty broken one. They're not animals, it's stupid both ways. Plus he's seen a lot of batshit weirdness from pirates and Marines both.

Thus, it's just another dorky, dumbass quirk of a well-meaning idiot brat. He'd definitely try to smack some sense into Flashy if he talked like that, though.

>81 + 33 = 114 v 46 + 55 = 101

This time, you take the hint and trust to patience. Footwork first, as both your teachers tell you - the essence of all evasion, defence and offense.

You and Smoboss circle each other, you carefully and him almost lazily. You swords lash out to test his guard once or twice - his jitte catches the first but lets it go, and simply bats away the second.

He's not taking you seriously.

You don't let your eyes narrow in irritation; instead, you keep the look of concentration on your face, even as you make what seems to be another test towards his stomach.

Smoboss' jitte whips out to catch it - but you were only feinting, Cut-chan avoiding his grasp, while Ka-tan jabs straight and sharp at his leg.

It should stab through, but those few inches of target turn to smoke as Ka-tan reaches his leg, leaving your sword slicing through nothing.

"That's a hit," the bossman allows, sounding pleased. "Once more, and remember to watch your surroundings."

>96, DC 95, diggity darn

You steel yourself as a thought strikes you.

As far as you’re aware, Smoboss doesn’t have any form of Haki. So if you can use it, that’s a pretty big advantage, right?

As the book said - calm. Calm. Calm.

Even as the pair of you watch each other carefully, Smoboss obviously intending to let you make the first move, you focus on your breathing, your heartbeat, stilling your mind of all the what-ifs as it races to analyze the spar.

Calm. Calm.

Forget ‘if he does that, I’ll do this, if he does this, I’ll do that’. What’s he going REALLY going to do? That one, unchangeable path.

Are there any ‘unchangeable’ paths? No, don’t tink about that - you focus on the movement of the jitte, his own body’s movements, but still you don’t see...

Oh. Right. He’s letting you take the lead,so he’s reacting to you. So of course he’s not going to make any movements until you do.

You step lightly in, the sisters changing angle as you position them strike, your eyes and mind latched onto the jitte.

Smoboss moves-doesn’tmove-moves -

(Successfully activated Haki! Haki +1, reached +5! Further Haki activation rolls dropped to DC 90!)

You swing Ka-tan in a low slash, charging forwards, Cut-chan steadying herself to parry at Smoboss’ jitte - except you see him slipping it around to catch her, which means you promptly pull her back and aim to slice at his wrist, except he catches on as you disengage and angles himself to guard, except you see him changing angle and side-step to keep in position, except

EXCEPT NOW YOUR BRAIN IS HURTING, OW

You stumble slightly as you move, unable to react as the jitte lashes out to catch Ka-tan, and before you know it, the real jitte catches up with one you saw, a light flick shoving her out of your grip and skittering across the deck.

(Swordsmanship +1!)

You wince at the mild headache you suddenly have, even as Smoboss lightly taps your open side with the jitte.

“You’re out. That was good, up until you stumbled. You’re getting better at reading your opponent, brat.”

You smile sweetly. “Yeah, this Haki thing is actually pretty cool, Bossman.”

Smoboss stares at you, first in incomprehension, and then in a slow, dawning horror. You can actually see the moment the light leaves his eyes, utterly destroying his soul.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“No.”

“Do you want me to lie to you, Smoboss?”

“N- y-“ Forehead meets palm as he seethes a long, slow breath out, teeth gritted around his cigar. “How.”

You shrug. “Dunno. Klaus said I activated it a while back, but he only told me today. So I figured I’d see if I could do it deliberately!”

“For fuck’s sake,” you hear bossman say under his breath, which seems rather rude. Then he puts his hand down, looking around suspiciously for anyone nearby, before stepping close. “Listen - if you want to stay in Loguetown, don’t tell anyone else. And don’t make it too obvious.”

Whaaaaaat?! “Why not?”

“Because the second the brass find out you pulled goddamn Haki out your ass, you’ll end up snatched off to train under some Commodore or Rear-Admiral. And I guarantee you, they’ll be a lot less lax with you than I am.”

>But I can keep using it if I’m discreet, right?

“Do you notice how I’m not dangling you overboard for that comment, rookie?”

“Have I mentioned how you’re 5e best? Because you are. Especially on the ‘not dangling me overboard’ part.”

Smoboss makes a vague noise of realization. “Actually, if I do that, we might end up finding Yu’s sister, when you inevitably fall.”

“... Yu?”

He gives you a look that could charitably be called pitying. “Considering how much the men are gossiping like fishwives, how do you not know what the mermaid’s called?”

“Justice” is whatever the Celestial Dragons say it is.
>>
>>3372685
>Variety
Honestly most subscribed to troublemaking pirates = take them off the seas desu. Justice is just keeping the peace and protecting civilians.

'Absolute Justice' has it's own distinction because following it to the letter will result in deaths of many good marines and innocent civilans caught in the crossfire. And these deaths will probably outnumber the pirate deaths, especially when absolute justice is turned against grand line / new world pirates.
>>
>>3372688
How much you want to bet that Flashman slept through the academy class that covered the celestial dragons?
>>
>>3372685
Other than the fact that the Justice in general is kinda fucked because of an all powerful group of noble fuck heads, theirs also seperate types of justice depending on the Admiral you're talking about.
For example Sengoku's is Reigning Justice, which is basically the law is always right but you don't need to be more of a cunt than you have to
While the most common is Absolute Justice
Which means fuck all criminals for any reason also fuck people who are connected with criminals and just in general fuck everyone

Don't forget Rob Lucci's "Dark Justice". i can't describe it of fthe top of my head well, but I'll reiterate the incident described by some Marine official. That ought to give and idea about Lucci's Justice:

He also finds it offensive when someone shows weakness around him, as seen when he told the cowardly Marines on a Buster Call ship to shut up,[34] and goes as far as to dismiss a new colleague by presumably killing him for being weak.[35] The reason that he killed the five hundred soldiers in his past was due to another belief of his - the belief that weakness is a sin. Personally, he believes anyone who shows weakness is no better than a criminal.[36][37] He also believes if he is involved then the situation means blood will be drawn and that he also does not have to accept the views and ideals of his superiors as long as he completes his missions efficiently.[38]

Lucci bases his outlook on justice on his personal philosophy that any person or thing that goes against the World Government's interests should be destroyed, but is also evil for being that way. Specifically, he has declared to serve a "Dark Justice" (闇の正義 Yami no Seigi?),[39] his motto being "Necessary Evil" (必要悪 Hitsuyō Aku?).[8]

A lot of them are assholes, especially in the upper ranks. Enlisted Marines and low rank officers for the most part range from decent to "I've done some shitty things but it's just part of the job".

For the most Flashman has been doing a good job and following a marine crew who are all good people, so his views on the Marine as a whole is positive. I'm definitely interested in seeing how that changes as he meets more and more officers with clashing viewpoints. I would actually love to see what Lucci/Flashman meeting would entail.

You don't know whether to be horrified or disgusted, so you settle on disgusrified. "So I'm just meant to close my eyes and ears? Pretend people aren't doing awful, official shit around me? Boss... what's your Justice? Is that really what you think?"

Smoboss grits his teeth. His shoulders are hunched as he lights a second cigar, looking like he didn't sign up for a sudden conversation about morality when he decided to come on deck for some sparring.

"Brat, don't think I approve of shit like that. I hate it. If I see that kind of corruption or abuse of authority, then I'll stop it, as best I can. But slamming head-on onto things isn't always the way to win. Shit, most times it'll just get you dragged down instead - or worse."

"So, what? There's some invisible line, and you've got to figure out whether someone's crossed it before you can decide whether to do anything?"

"Yes. That's how justice WORKS. But true, pure justice... in a perfect world, it'd happen." His voice lowering, Smoboss fixes you with an almost reluctant look. Or is it pity? "This isn't a perfect world. So you're going to have to learn what's important to you, and what you're willing to risk for it."

>How am I supposed to figure that out?!

>>3372875
The fight only happens if Sengoku resigns. The major thing to prevent that from happening would be Marineford, so preventing Ace from being captured, beating the shit out of Blackbeard, or whatever other shenanigans. We might also be able to trigger some "I still need to be here" feelings for him if he finds out our identity.
>>
>>3372905
I mean, keep in mind Sengoku is 77 before the timeskip, even ignoring Marineford he's probably not going to be Fleet Admiral for much longer.
>>
>>3372873
Sengoku is my favourite character in all of One Piece, so I'm biased, but look how he lightened up after his retirement. Let Law get away, let the Strawhats get away, hung around Marineford mocking Akainu for getting stressed out. I think he's less a man who believes in Sins of the Father (frankly, he's too smart for that, and seen too much), and more a man with a definite separation of 'Personal Feelings' and 'Duty'. Does he want to execute his best friend's grandson, which he also knows will kick off a war and cause a shitton of deaths? No. Does he do it anyway because he doesn't let how stupid he considers this to be, to interfere with the orders from above? Sure.

>>3372875
Honestly, who knows if Marineford will even happen? Canon is there to be mutilated.

>>3372900
It's kind of fun to see how Flashy's developed with his dads as role models. I think he's definitely picking up hints of them (especially the flashes of sadism from Klaus. Poor Sunglasses and Hat).
>>
>>3372905
Actually, wait, reading up on this shit again, he was disappointed in the WG for keeping the Impel Down breakout a secret. All we'd really have to prevent (assuming everything somehow stays the same previously) is Impel Down, which I think is something that should be prevented anyway. Impel Down is all kinds of fucked up, but it probably isn't a good idea to release so many pirates into the world. Speaking of which, I can't wait til Flashy finds out about it!

I'll support this though I think the natural response to it is that it's not just our own life that would actually be at risk.

The way I see it, back before we joined the Academy and regained the hope of meeting our dad, we probably wouldn't be principled enough to risk anything for the sake of the truth despite having nothing to risk. Now we're principled enough but we have a family we don't want to lose.

Don't think Flashman would offer to stake his life on pursuing justice just like that, or even set this life goal to be 'Perfect Justice'

Later on maybe, but not this early, when he's so conflicted and has yet to witness the full tyranny of the world gov with his own eyes.

Smoboss shakes his head. "The problem is, you can make other people lose as well. People who don't deserve it, just because they're affilitiated with you. Easy targets. So... what then?"

He sounds like he's giving an exam.

Smoboss snorts. "Yeah, that's the problem. If you really care about justice, then you care about people. And if you care about people, others out there will always see that as a weakness, a convenient target.
"Look. You're young, you're a rookie. You're not meant to have all the answers. You're not meant to deal with shit like this at all, though you might have to, anyway. But you DO need to be aware of when to keep your mouth shut and nose out of things you're not ready for."

He takes another drag on the cigar, sounding utterly frustrated. "Some people will look at your skills and Haki and see the potential. Others'll see a threat, and I'm not just talking about criminals. If you end up snatched up by one of the brass who's looking to mold you into their perfect apprentice, you're going to see shit you can't handle right now, brat. And if you're too loud about it, you're not so special they won't cut their losses. That might mean demoting or transferring you, or it might be worse, and you might get other people caught in the crossfire."

You swallow. "So I should, what? Keep my head down? Don't get noticed?"

"If you were a Lieutenant, or at least older, you'd be a less ideal prospect," Smoboss admits, "so if you can hold off too much bullshit until then, that'd be good. Or if you could get the protection of someone higher-ranked than me, who isn't an asshole."

“From Smoboss, that’s high praise~!” You fingergun EVEN HARDER, waggling your eyebrows in smug delight. “Buuuuut I got a hug from Klaus, so that crappy comment isn’t even in the running for being nice.”

Smoboss scowls. “Didn’t you just say you appreciate all kinds of compliments? That was a compliment, so take it. And why the hell was Klaus hugging you?”

“He let me drink his alcohol, too.”

“... Is he dying?”

Only if he takes your shampoo. “Not that I’m aware. We just had our, y’know, talk, and things got a bit... emotional.”

“Hm. Well, don’t expect a hug from me, brat. I don’t give ‘em.” He stubs his cigar out on the railing, which sucks for whoever’ll have to repaint there tomorrow.

“That’s okay, I’ll just hug Klaus instead.”

You’ve never seen such a look of intense fury directed at you. “Why would you even want more?!”

“Um.” You try not to sink into the deck. “Hugs are nice?”

“fuckingdammitbrat,” Smoboss mutters in a mash of rapid, frustrated words, eyes narrowing as his gaze heaps some kind of blame on you. You’re not entirely sure what”s happening. “Just get the shit over here, idiot.”

You edge closer.

“NOW.”

Restraining a panicked squeak, you take another, larger couple of rapid steps next to him, only to feel an arm suddenly holyshit it’s around you it’s Smoboss’ arm whatthefuck dragging you close for two seconds and then

The arm vanishes, Smoboss reaching up to adjust his collar, teeth gritted around his rapidly-smoking cigars. “There. Happy?”

Smoboss is well aware that as a Logia and a Captain, he can get away with way more shit than Flashy could. Despite that, one has to consider that’s he’s an incredibly competent Logia, in his early-thirties, and STILL only a Captain. Yes, Loguetown is important, but he’s clearly been pissing off a lot of people. If he didn’t have that Logia, he’d have been forced out, framed and arrested for something, or just left as a Lieutenant long ago. There’s no way he’ll recommend Flashy follow the exact same path unless he’s sure the consequences are understood.

Out of curiosity, what do you think of that quest so far? It definitely hasn't been having as many shenanigans as this, and it seems pretty divorced from canon One Piece at the moment.

ALL LEWDS ARE BANNED, BY ORDER OF THE DICE GODS

>94; now 184/???, first stage complete!

Amazingly, Klaus doesn’t have you hang over the ship’s prow today. Maybe it’s because of last night. Maybe it’s because you hold up your freshly-bandaged hand and make a sad face at him.

In any case, you instead find yourself blindfolded, sat (very carefully) up in the rigging, trying to ignore the infantry who occasionally climb past as they adjust the sails. Cut-chan in one hand, Ka-tan in the other, arms and legs looped around the ropes, secured tight against the wind.

It sucks.

... But the balance of your weapons, 5eir positioning as you support them, has never been clearer. Despite the blindfold, despite the wind and billowing sails, you almost think you could toss one of the swords in the air and catch it by the hilt without a problem.

You’re... not sure how this is supposed to to help you cut metal, but it’s strangely relaxing to feel your swords like an extension of yourself when you’re not even in combat.

... Your arms are kind of aching, though.

>Whiskey Island will be docked at in the evening. 1st of two daily actions until then?

I’m actually really enjoying it! It doesn’t update as often or fast as I’d like (alas, the QM presumably has more of a life than me), but the updates are lengthy and well-written. The characterisation is good (I wasn’t thrilled by the new kid, too bratty, but she’s growing on me), and I like that it explores a greatly different aspect of the OP world than the canon does.

The only real criticism I have is that there tend to be a lot of ‘challenging’ options, but it’s not like anons couldn’t vote for easier ones if we were willing to be more careful. Unfortunately the rolls aren’t as good there as here. Backstories are intriguing, aspects of the sword-spirit stuff are weirdly similar to what I’m planning (might change stuff a little) so obviously that’s my preference, and the QM nicely adapts vocab for different POVs. Would definitely recommend, although it’s a slower-pace and more in-depth than this Quest if that’s not your thing. Characters aren’t stupidly overpowered, which is actually my preference, despite Flashy’s bullshit. Humour is good, less slapstick than here. No crotch-kicking, which is obviously a minus.

... Cut-chan is still better than than Val’s cutlass, though. Obviously.

Blindfold off (as fun as it sounds to walk around with it on), you find yourself knocking on the door to Yu’s cabin. It’s kind of your responsibility to see she settles in, right?

“It’s unlocked! Enter, human!”

... yeah, okay.

Shoving the door open, you see that a hasty... box-thing... has been rigged by the ship’s carpenters. Basically a massive crate, planks tightly-joined and with the shine of a water-proof coating, as well as what looks to be a bit of tarp peeking over the high edges. Inside it,you hear water sloshing about as as Yu lounges over the edge.

She peers at you as you enter, pouting slightly. “Oh, it’s you.”

“No, that’s you. I’m me.”

“Ah?”

“... Never mind.” Clearly you’re far too witty for her. “Sooooo, I wondered how you’re settling in? You okay with the whole ‘on board a Marine ship’ thing?”

Yu nods proudly. “Naturally the Great Me can endure any hardship! However, this vessel is an acceptable transport for my great personage, until the Great Me can rejoin my own kind.” She pauses, frowning. “Although the lack of finely braised spin6-fish is a concern...”

You’re not sure what the hell a spiny-fish is, or if it’s even edible by humans, but you suspect it isn’t on the ship’s menu. “Well, I’m sure you can ‘endure the hardship’ of Marine rations for a while. But, uh, what if we can’t get you to Fishman Island? You think you’ll be okay in Loguetown?”

Waving a hand airily, a Yu smirks as she splashed water droplets across the small cabin. “Nonsense! With the Great Me on board, destiny is clearly carrying us towards the Island. There’s no way we can turn around before then.”

Um. “You realize we’re... just chasing a bunch of pirates, right?”

“An excellent side-task for the Great Me’s escort! But we will still arrive.” She gives a final nod of confirmation.

...

Okay...

“Soooooo... wanna come on deck?”

Yu looks over at the medical stretcher leaned against the wall, with a hint of wistfulness. “Much as the Great Me would like to, that seems to be... impractical.

“Nah, that’s cool,” you casually say. “I have minions.”

“S-servants!” Yu’s face lights up in excitement. “Are you a noble?”

“Nah, they’re just pretty easy to beat up. Hold on.” You stick your head out of the door, clearing your throat. “HEY, MINIONS! GET OVER HERE!”

“... That seems fun.”

“It really, really is,” you admit.

“Aniki!”

“Also, they’re weirdly fast.”

Sunglasses and Hat peer in, taking in the sight of a curious mermaid with utter delight.

“It’s her! A real merbabe!”

Ignoring their drooling idiocy, you motion towards her. “Sunglasses, Hat, this is Yu.”

Hat stares at you. “No, that’s... that’s a mermaid, aniki...”

“He’s finally lost it,” Sunglasses mutters.

You resist the urge to dropkick them. “Her NAME is Yu! How could you have missed such a totally obvious thing? Were you in a closet?”

“Why would we be-?”

“That’s not even important right now,” you continue. “We need to get Yu - that’s her - up on deck, which means I need you - that’s you two - to carry the stretcher. Got it?”

They salute, followed by an intense five minutes of wrangling a wriggling koi mermaid out of her mer-container and onto a stretcher, made all the more difficult because she refuses to let any of you touch her.

“No man may touch the Great Me! How could I ever marry?!”

“I’m pretty sure most people manage to get married despite that,” you comment in frustration, as you try to adjust the stretcher to her fins.

“Oh, that’s no concern, the Great Me never intends to marry.”

“.... THEN HOW DOES IT EVEN MATTER!?”

“She’s on, aniki!” Sunglasses and Hat high-five at their stunning competence, clearly pleased by the results.

“Finally,” you mutter, as the pair heave the stetcher up, unbothered by the weight of a haughty, curled-up mermaid. “To the deck!”

Yu pouts. “Ah, no cushion?”

“Your head’s soft enough.”

“... Definitely not a noble.”

>THE ADVENTURE CONTINUES

Leading your cheerful minions up on deck, you breathe in the invigorating scent of sea air, the sound of wind and waves whipping past, the feel of salt-spray as it dots across the deck.

The moment is promptly ruined by Yu.

"Servants, you may lower the Great Me's carriage!"

The dumbasses' eyes gleam with joy. "She called us servants, aniki!"

"A real mermaid!"

"We're a mermaid's servants!"

You fix them with a disgusted look even as the pair cling to other, the stretched safely lowered. "WE'RE SO HAPPY!"

"Don't forget who you belong to," you snap, arms crossed.

"... The Marines?"

Oh. "Yeah, that's... exactly what I meant. A-anyway, Yu, is there anything you want to do up here?"

Yu nods eagerly. "Of course! As a Marine ship, there must be fine warriors aboard, yes? Let them battle for the Great Me's amusement!"

"OKAY~!" Sunglasses and Hat manage to get out, before you smack their skulls together.

"I guess we could spar a little, if you wa- oh, hey Mina. Did you want to use here?"

Mina, jitte slung over one shoulder, stares on curiosity at the assembled crowd. "The Captain says I should go through my exercises regularly," she offers up, "But, um, I can go somewhere else? Or do them later?"

"Nah, that's cool. This is Yu, by the way." You motion over to Yu, who gives a gracious nod. "Yu, this is Mina, our ship's... something."

Mermaid and child reach out to shake hands, each one staring like it's the first time they've seen such a fascinating creature. Which it probably is.

Mina beams up at her new object of excitement. "Hi! You can call me Mi, Yu!"

... You're pretty sure they're just fucking with you, now.

"What are you guys even talking about...?"

"Nothing, Ensign-aniki!"

"Don't worry about it! We love you anyway!"

Rolled 9 (1d100)

>78 + 20 + 2 = 100
>v 62, 50, 76 = 98, 66, 92

You bring out your fans, causing more than a couple of weird looks from your opponents, casually starting to swing them.

"The Great Me commands you to battle!"

... Thanks. Despite that, everyone seems to take it as the starting signal - Hat rushes out, stepping into Sunglasses' way; not as a mistake, but shielding him from any strikes, taking the focus off him.

It's good for Sunglasses, but not for him - you and Mina promptly double-team, more from convenience than camaraderie, your fans whipping around his legs and tugging, while Mina slams her jitte into his stomach as he claims and falls.

One down.

She tries to catch your chains on the jitte as you pull them back, but you're just barely fast enough.

"ANIKI, NOOOOOOOO!"

"Go on... without me..." Hat chokes from the deck, splayed out with his eyes closed.

... right.

Sunglasses actually puts up a pretty good fight now; he puts Mina between the two of you, leaving you to attack him and Mina both, and Mina to defend against the two of you. It's tricky, because you're trying to use the chains rather than the bladed fans - this isn't the kind of spar where you'd feel comfortable trying to slice your opponents up, when they've never fought fans before.

Still, between a partially-blocked you and a distracted Mona, even Sunglasses can only fare so well. After all, even if she blocks some of your movement, Mina hardly obstructs your view. You wait for her to snag his dao, her tiny weight trying to to tug it aside, and swing your fans to wrap tight around his upper arms, yanking him unsteadily.

It's enough for Mina to disarm him, giving a cheer of victory.

Now it's just you and the midget.

>Roll 1d100, best of 3. Same bonuses as before.

If we actually have a harpoon gun, maybe we can have her try it out. I imagine she could be useful as an anti-ship unit underwater. I think regardless we need to teach her about ranged combat. We have all primarily melee fighters right now.

Bow would actually be HYPE. Kuja Archery Is a thing, she could maybe pick It up If we ever stop by there. I bet she could come up with some technique to fire It underwater because ONE PIECE, and most Importantly out of all of these options, out of ALL of these options you can add your physical strength to the power of the bow.

Oh yeah I'm hype about bows.

Ultimately though, she should pick from what we suggest to her but If I get a say It's bows.

Okey dokey, so harpoon just beat out rifle. (I'm assuming this means harpoon fired from a gun and not a thrown one?) In any case, there's not actually a harpoon-gun on board at the moment, so training will have to wait... I'm also fine with writing harpoon AND rifle, if you guys want two weapons.

We'll hold off on MerMarine for the moment anyway. Writing.

>L O N G R A N G E S T A B B I E S

"Maybe a harpoon," you muse
"Good in water and out. And when you're about water, you don't have to worry too much about moving around for it..."

"And you can use it as a melee weapon in a pinch!" Hat nods enthusiastically. "It's not as good as a sword, obviously..."

"All weapons are beautiful in their own way," you say primly. "And we must give them all the love and affection they deserve."

"Uh... okay, aniki..."

Making a mental note to ask Smoboss about how one might, hypothetically speaking, obtain a harpoon gun, you give your own bladed beauties a gentle pat.

>Sunglasses, Hat... wanna learn Kami-e? You might actually dodge some hits in future.

"Mina, wanna spar against my swords this time?"

Yu perks up even more than Mina does. "Ah! Battle again! Entertain the Great Me!"

Mina points at herself, confused. "'Mi'? You mean me, Mi?"

"No, the Great Me means 'me'."

"Yu means herself," you butt in, not wanting to see a horrible calvacade of me/you puns. "Now, spar? Yes, no, chop chop."

"Yes!"

As expected! The audience of Sunglasses, Hat and Yu settle down to watch while you and Mina take your places, drawing swords and jitte respectively.

Okay, you get a +44 roll with swords, NOT +34 as I originally thought, I fucked up bad with adding on the style bonus previously... apologies everyone, I'll see about giving you a bonus to metal-cutting or something.

Mina (this roll) gets +26.

>53 + 44 = 97 v 21+ 26 = 47

Mina is damn good for her age, even for someone ten years older than her, but she's also short, physically weak, and recovering from life as a slave, which you suspect doesn't involve gym membership.

That's not to say you go full force against her, but you don't need to.

You're far better with swords than with fans, and without having to worry about two other opponents (or with getting distracted and hitting yourself with a spinny death blade), you can step in with no concerns.

You test her guard, her reaction times, her perception; you keep up with her movements, lashing out when she extends too far or rushes in unnecessarily, and casually angling your body away when she aims for you instead of Cut-chan or Ka-tan.

In the end, it's less a spar and more of an outright lesson, but it's still valuable experience for the both of you. Plus, most importantly, you get to show off.

And isn't that the most important thing of all?

Finally, as Mina slows down due to exhaustion, you glide in and give her a light bonk on the head with a hilt.

"Aaaand match."

Mina scowls up at you, face red with exertion as she pants. "I'll - beat you - next time!"

>What was that, looooser~?

>condoms aren't the only protection for your lower friend

"I wouldn't be so sure of that Mina! I bought a cup after last time!"

"Eh?" Mina stares up at you, confused. "What's a new mug gonna do in a spar?"

"... Uh. I'll... explain when you're older. Look! A distr- I mean, everyone was really impressed by you! And how you didn't kick anyone!"

Mina looks over to where the other three give polite applause or a loud whoop, respectively. "Mm, I was okay?"

"Definitely," you reassure. "Plus I can walk at the end, so bonus."

(Combat Teaching +2)

The rest of the day is taken up with horrible, terrible things. A) Cleaning the latrines, and B) having to actually help out with the ship, due to some bad weather.

Doing your job... ugh.

As evening arrives, though, the Look out gives a call of land sighted, and Whiskey Peak soon starts to come into view.

Closer still, details start to emerge.

It looks a lot more... destroyed than you'd have thought. Same for everyone else, judging by the worried or furious looks on everyone's faces.
