Our motley band had only just gotten comfortable in their new home when trouble struck. An insectile abomination has attacked Henry's home, attempting and failing to kidnap Ophelia before being brought down. Now the group looks to figure out who sent the thing and to make them pay.

Quest rules:
1. All dice rolled are assumed to be D100 unless otherwise stated
2. The first two rolls will be given far greater importance, but additional rolls, good or bad, will affect the outcome. This choice ultimately falls to the Lorekeeper, odd circumstances may cause him to change how the story progresses (a ton of crits for instance)
3. All dice rolls are final
4. Critical fails are considered to be between 1-5, Critical hits are between 95-100. Crits overpower any other roll except another crit. In the rare chance that a crit fail and crit success happen. The Lorekeeper will do something interesting from a story angle. Similarly, rolling 2 of the same number will be considered a MEGA crit, just pray its two high numbers.
5. Near misses may occur, where a rolled number is close to the required threshold, whether over or under. This can have an impact on how the story proceeds. However these are up to the decision of the Lorekeeper.
6. Sometimes there are optional choices one may participate in, these will generally NOT be taken unless there are multiple posters who wish it, assuming there are multiple posters in the thread
7. There are often times choices with multiple parts, each part is counted separately, unless otherwise stated, sometimes rolls will be required before counting the second, third, etc, part
8. There will be “Time Limited” decisions, in which characters may only do a set number of actions, these will be clearly marked. Generally you will only be able to choose one decision per ‘round’.
9. Rules may be subject to change between threads, but will not change during the same thread. These rules are what we will follow for the remainder of this thread.

“It was said that the spot that Avignon rests was carved into the cliffside by a massive wave, the truth of this is unknown.”

~ Rosgrain memoirs

===============================(Chapter Start)=================================

The morning came quickly, and everybody more or less leapt into action with minimal need of convincing from Henry.

Larry and Charles formed the recon team while Henry and Johnny made up the information gathering team. Ophelia was by herself in the ‘I just want to spend the day alone working on my creation’ team. Henry was kind of creeped out how the woman sometimes treated ticky as her child. That sort of behavior wasn’t uncommon among necromancers but it didn’t say good things about ones sanity.

Breakfast happened over the course of an hour over two rooms, Ophelia opting to eat while she worked, and the others dining in the makeshift kitchen that Ophelia and Henry had thrown together. There was a stove, a semi functioning sink, a small cold box that Henry had bought before realizing Ophelia could just make them, and a heat box for cooking food. Ophelia had even placed some heat runes on top to act as burners for when Henry made eggs and bacon. A really nice touch he had to admit.

As Henry finished his morning cup of coffee, he and Johnny headed out towards the Nirdec Caverns while Charles and Larry went off to do recon at the location Ophelia had seen.

Henry didn’t expect them to actually find the place, he really doubted that Ophelia had found jack shit. He couldn’t scry at all, let alone over such a large city, the woman was probably just trying to save face.

Charles and Larry set out, Charles full of confidence that he’d do his job well, and Larry happy to simply have an excuse to stretch his legs and let someone else do most of the heavy lifting. Charles had a bag with the reanimated cat corpse in it, curtesy of Henry, who’d raised the thing back up the prior night. The cat stood stock still instead of being limp, which caused the hairs on Charles’ neck to stand up straight.

The sea air was something neither of them had quite gotten used to, but Charles noticed how it seemed to set Henry at ease, something he’d never seen the man do until they’d arrived in the city. Charles hated how he couldn’t understand how dangerous the world really was. He hated a lot about how naïve and weak he was before, and how weak he still was.

He hadn’t done anything to the bug, he hadn’t mentioned how he’d been hurled against a wall and lost consciousness, he hadn’t mentioned how he hadn’t been able to react at all. He didn’t care what Henry had said about a fear aura. He needed to get stronger, a lot stronger, any way possible. So nothing could just push him around like that.

He mulled over the fact that Henry had made him do so much tedious bullshit while the man did little and still was able to expend ever more amounts of mana. It wasn’t fair. Life had never been fair but at least he could console himself that it wasn’t his lot in life before. Back at the castle. Now he had to face his own inability to be of any use on a daily basis. He hated it.

“We should be getting there soon lad.” Larry said.

“Right, can I trust you to guard me and not wander off?” Charles said, sounding more annoyed than he would’ve liked.

“Jeeze what’s with you today?” Larry said.

“Nothing, I’m fine.” Charles replied.

“Alright, whatever.” Larry replied. The man started whistling a tune.

Charles hated how care free he was. This was serious! Someone had ordered that thing to attack them, obviously, meaning that they needed to strike back twice as hard. It would only be right.

The building was a three story stone and timber construction which took up an entire city block and was some sort of storage facility. There was a brick wall around the building as well which blocked off sightlines and overall access. Charles figured the cat could just climb up a wall and then jump through an open window to get inside. Easy enough, no guards posted, whoever was inside probably didn’t think they’d be courageous enough to strike back so quickly.

Decisions:
1. Find a nice quiet spot to transfer your sight and locomotion to the cats body
2. Head to a nearby roof top and try to scope the place out more (will use up more time)
3. Head in yourself, if you and Larry can bring them down this will be over and done with, and Henry will be impressed with you!

Larry found an old abandoned townhouse that the two set up inside. Larry had to temporarily chase out a fairly angry squatter but other than that things went very smoothly. Once Larry had shown the squatter the business end of his sword and ran him off the two had no further trouble. The place reeked of opium though, which Larry continued to gaged on long after Charles had gotten used to it. Charles hardly minded of course, his good for nothing sister was always using the stuff, he’d gotten rather used to the smell over the years, even if he’d sworn never to actually use it. She was among many people Charles hadn’t minded losing that day.

The circle was thrown up rather quickly, and the stock still cat corpse was gently placed at its center while Charles took up the caster’s position around the outside. He conjured the meager black mana he could manage, and set the spell off, concentrating but not nearly as hard as he had expected. It came more easily now that he had succeeded once. VERY easily.

He found himself floating through a black void, seeing images of things he didn’t recognize. He looked up to see a vast, glowing eye staring down at him, the symbol of the church. Was this god? Was he about to die?

The eye stared down on him, then it blinked, and 3o4u201429u401 9u10error328013930error, unable9340323 read filel839481u304

Larry watched as the cat jumped out of nowhere and Charles slumped over. The cat looked around while drunkenly stumbling around.

“That you Charles?” Larry asked. The man gripped his sword when the corpse nodded back at him. He’d never minded necromancy before really, but this was unnerving to him.

The cat bounded outside leaving Larry alone with Charles’ actual body.

Charles felt sick, he didn’t even know how that was possible but he couldn’t quite remember WHAT he’d even seen. Something had been watching him, sure, but what?

He quickly forgot about it as his task lay ahead of him.
Decision:
1. Head through the front gate, the cat’s body can squeeze through the gaps

Charles navigated the cat through the widest gap the steel gate had to offer, and then took a quick look around the yard, the guard hadn’t even reacted at all to his presence, which meant he had free reign of this portion of the exterior. He noticed a couple of odd symbols, an hourglass and a stalk of wheat, on the guards clothing, He’d have to ask Henry about it later, he had no idea what it meant and it didn’t seem to be a royal insignia, those tended to be either simpler or fancier.

Charles moved his cat body around the warehouse, finding a few more people milling about, one of them seemed to be some sort of bean counter who was busy writing down something or other about a pallet of crates that was in front of him. Charles continued to find a second guard who was equally as asleep as the first was.

Security around here was extremely lax, had Ophelia gotten it wrong? Had she wasted there time?

Charles decided to try something that’d been at the back of his mind, mage sight. Henry said it was possible to do while projecting your sight but extremely difficult and taxing on the user.

So naturally Charles did it on his first attempt, and found the entire warehouse to be surrounded with a veil of blue mana magic, several in fact. He wondered how none of the angels circling above hadn’t noticed, or perhaps they didn’t care? Regardless there was something off about this place. Charles wanted to know what.

There were a few entrances to try out, a ladder leading up to the roof, a pallet of crates the beancounter was hauling into the warehouse, an open window, and the front personnel door which was slightly ajar.

(-2 time units)

Decisions:
1. Try to climb up the ladder onto the roof

Charles waited until the beancounter had his back turned then he moved the cat body into the crate and hid amongst a grouping of metal tanks which were all sealed up. The crates were loaded up onto a pallet by a guard with a metal face mask on which Charles assumed was a zombie of some kind, and the beancounter began to wheel the whole thing into the warehouse, only stopping at the door to have a brief exchange.

“Let me in, I have the latest shipment of supplies from the floating lab.”

“What’s the password?”

“It’ll be your job if you don’t let me in, Earl doesn’t like waiting for his toys.” The beancounter replied.

“Fuck, fine.”

Charles watched through the cats eyes as the door was slowly lifted up via a crank and a series of gears and chains. After they got inside the door was lowered in a similar manner. He’d have to find another exit if he wanted to get the corpse out.

Inside was abuzz with activity of around a dozen or so different people. There were a few large glass cylinders with murky liquid at the center of the room, with a couple of catwalks up above for better mobility. There were a couple of franks with significant metal attachments prowling around acting as tougher security and there was a fairly important looking man with fine clothes and the symbol of the cult of progress on his back, the symbol being an outstretched hand with a gear on the back of it.

A hand of progress, so to speak.

The room was covered with all sorts of machinery and piping, which was emitting all sorts of noises, clanks, grinding, and what have you. Charles realized one of the blue mana layers must have been a silence enchantment of some kind. It was a bit much for the boy to take in, but he needed to get deeper into the place if at all possible.

Decisions:
1. Ride’s over, get off
2. See where you get taken
3. Cut the connection and return to your body, you’ve seen enough
4. Try to cause an accident to ruin whatever is going on here

The cat corpse leapt out of the container at Charles’ command and found a nice gap in the floor to hide in. He quickly realized that there were all sorts of mechanical moving parts down here and that the cat corpse could be disposed of here if he wanted to make a distraction. It also meant that it was dangerous to hide and move under the floor if he didn’t want the cat corpse to get horribly mangled.

“So you’re saying we’ve lost the test subject?!”

“Well its presently unaccounted for sir, but the signal runes we implanted into it have allowed us to narrow down its location to a warehouse district a few miles from here. I believe it might have been killed and taken by some hostile faction, the church would have simply burned it.”

“I see, and does the director know about any of this?”

“At present, no.”

“Keep it that way for as long as possible. We’re already at odds with quite a few people, last thing we need is for word of this little incident to spread.”

“Understood, tonight I’ll dispatch a cleanup crew to try and destroy any evidence.”

Charles guided the cat deeper into the building, waiting for a grunt to open a door and slipping inside before it closed. He found a large pulley operated elevator which led down into what Charles assumed was the sewer. There were a couple of people wearing mage robes discussing a blueprint of some sort, four more franks of various sizes and shapes, one of which had a glass cylinder reinforced with metal on its back.

The room was fairly large, with about a dozen light runes on various parts of the wall providing a meager amount of light. Lastly, there were a couple of completely armored guards on an upper catwalk, armed with crossbows.

You notice a couple of doors on either side of the chamber, flanking the elevator shaft.

Charles guided the cat body onto the lift, which was the equivalent of a large wooden bucket with a couple ropes and pulleys acting as the mechanism that lifted it up and down. He could see some sort of motor nearby which was loaded up with a couple of volt runes and a resistor rune, probably so the whole thing didn’t burn out or explode from the volt runes.

He didn’t even have to wait that long before a couple of mages and a guard wheeled a trolley full of mice and a couple of the metal containers from earlier on board.

“Can’t believe we’ve finally got to the point we can put on a show.” One of them said.

“Well if this goes well I doubt this will be used for anything peaceful.”

“If only we could find some way to launch the gas safely onto target, and keep it there.”

“We’ll have to rely on the other team for that.”

The lift reached the bottom and stopped with a thud. The mages and guard got off and headed for a large open set of double doors which led into a medium sized room with a large glass container in the center.

The whole place had been carved out of the sewer itself, Charles could see a few pipes leading away, thru which he could dispose of the cat corpse easily enough, or just leave it if he had to, though not cleaning up would be unacceptable for him.

Charles crept into the medium sized room with ease, only to realize there were about two dozen people present inside, all sitting on wooden folding chairs and all keeping their eyes on the center glass chamber. The guard kept watch over the metal canisters while the mages began dumping some of the mice they had with them into the container. They then closed up the opening and one of them pulled out a flask and a brush and painted the opening with some sort of vicious sticky material which Charles assumed was resin, creating an airtight seal.

The guard then grabbed a hose and attached a metal piece to valve on top of the tank, one of the mages inspected it before flashing a thumbs up. They talked to each other but Charles was too far away to notice. He’d picked an uninhabited corner to keep his cat in, far enough from the exit to not be spotted but close enough to run away if it came to it.

“Alright everyone, we all know why you’re here.” A fairly soft spoken and well-dressed mage said. “This is the culmination of several years of research and development, and we’d like to show just how much all that hard work and investment has paid off, we finally have a weapon that can make our biggest threats nonexistent. As you can see, we have a fairly large population of mice, which will be standing in for people in this little experiment. For this first test we’ll just be showing off the overall effects of the Sulfur gas.”

“Alright hit it.”

The mage in control of the valve turned the nozzle and a gush of yellow gas filled the container. The mage then cut the flow ensuring that visability was not harmed. The mice began to panic as the gas descended on them. Charles watched in disbelief as the mice began to drop dead and horrific looking blisters and scars formed on their bodies. Some of their fur shedding in the process.

“The gas is visable as you can see, ensuring we do not strike our own people when using it, in addition it will still cause significant damage to personal caught up in it. The mice are presently dying because their lungs are blistering and filling with blood, this means that our undead will be completely unaffected. You have a question sir?”

“How effective will it be against angels?”

“Due to a lack of subjects we have been unable to test it. Though even if effective we do not believe that angels would be directly impacted by the gas itself. They could simply climb above it and the gas would disperse too much to be effective at that point. The best results are when it stays low to the ground and wind is minimal.

“How expensive is it to produce this compound?”
>>
>>3394360

“The actual cost is fairly moderate… we can provide exact numbers if you’d really like but the main issue will be mass production. We need a larger production base to be able to create sufficient amounts of it.”

“I see.”

“Any further questions?”

“How will we distribute it?”

“We believe the ballista prototype that the secondary team showed off last week will be an adequate way of dispersing the gas. Using undead carriers loaded with explosive canisters is also a method we’ve utilized. We will be launching our first large scale practical test relatively soon, so we can see how it’ll work on actual humans then.”

“Alright.”

Charles stood back in shock, was THIS what Ophelia had been talking about? How did she even know about this? He had to tell Henry, this was really bad and this was WAY above anything they were aware of. He carefully exited the room while the group was distracted and tried to figure a way out.

Charles brought the cat body into one of the nearby open pipes, and worked his way out into the main sewer. He could see a couple of small rowboats tied to a small dock. The whole area was lit by torches and light runes. The current was fairly strong, and made for an easy place to dispose of the corpse. He tossed the thing into the river and cut the connection. He had a very good idea of what was going on, and he hadn’t even been spotted inside. A perfect recon mission. Henry would be pleased with his work for sure, though he’d probably be troubled by what Charles had actually found.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Charles bolted upright from where he’d been laying. Larry was nervously glancing through a window while trying to stay low to the ground. His sword was unsheathed and his breathing was uneven.

“Larry?” Charles whispered.

“Fuckin ell there you are. I didn’t know if I could remove you from that thing without issue.”

“What happened?”

“A couple of them started poking around just now, I think they know where we are.” Larry said. “We need to leave, get rid of the evidence and lets get the hell out.”

“R-right.” Charles said, scattering the mage sand and following Larry to the back of the rowhome. The place didn’t have a back door, but there was a window, probably the only unbroken one left in the place.

“Right so, we got two options kid.” Larry said. “We fight or run.”

“We can’t fight, there are a lot of them and they have Franks.”

“Well shit.” Larry said. “Hey it’ll be alright, I’m here after all.”

“I don’t want you to lie to me, ever, Larry.” Charles said.

Decision by Larry:
1. *break the glass and make a break for it with Charles*

Use Charles as bait to get into position. Be pretending to chase after a kid that ran away, Charles can run past them "escaping" then Larry can attack them.

When they turn to deal with Larry as the obvious threat, Charles can attack from behind with Bolt at close range.

“Alright I got an idea.” Larry said.

“Alright, spit it out then.” Charles said, repeatedly glancing at the house’s broken door that was a poor excuse for a barricade.

“Right so, I want you to pretend you were a kid who is running away from me. You distract the blokes following us and I’ll chop em up. Then when they’re distracted you bolt any remaining ones.”

“I don’t have red mana!” Charles said angrily. “Sides that’ll alert their people not to mention you’d be attacking people in broad daylight!”

“I don’t see you coming up with anything.” Larry replied.

“I think the aether trail leads this way!” One of the people outside shouted.

“Oh cripes.” Larry said.

“Blast, look we’re doing this sloppy.” Larry said, punching out the glass and cursing as it cut into his hand.

“Fucking shite!” He said, before grabbing Charles and forcing him through the newly created hole. He then leapt through himself and the two took off.

“THIS WAY!” Someone called from behind them.

Charles took a chance and looked over his shoulder. There were four people after them, two guard looking people and two people in mage robes.

“We need to lose them.” Larry said, pulling a large shard of glass out of his hand then ripping a piece of his shirt off to wrap around his wound.

“Charles!” Larry said, grabbing the kid and throwing him up onto his back. “I want you to look for a place with a lot of magic users. We can lose them.” Larry said.

“Wha-?” Charles said, suddenly thrown off the ground.

“I saw a milita captain do this once when I was younger, just trust me!”

Larry sheathed his sword and began to pick up the pace, grinning madly while he ran through the alleyways of Avignon. His feet sparked with red mana and his pace became inhuman.

The two guards and one of the mages were left in the dust while the last one took to the air to pursue them.

“Flight?!” Larry yelled. “Not good!”

“There!” Charles said, pointing to a bunch of buildings surrounding a dome.

It was a mage guild, the skyward palm. There would be a lot of mages there, and a lot of aetheric interference. Anyone trying to track them there would have a very difficult time. Not to mention the various wards and protective runes the place had.

Larry ran up a wall and kicked off it, propelling him and Charles over a cannel.

Charles took the time to scream in terror and he was suddenly launched off the ground by a madman.

Larry landed and immediately continued his run, spending more mana to extend the distance he could travel. The mage in the air began to conjure up a couple of bolts of blue mana. While Charles used his trump card, the ward charm.

A bubble of white mana formed around the two of them and several bolts of blue mana bounced off of it harmlessly. The bubble then popped as Larry ran up a wall into the guilds quarters, suprising a couple mages walking inside.

Larry ran into an open door and deeper into one of the buildings.

Decisions:
1. *hunker down and wait for the danger to pass*
2. *go on the offense, using the guild’s aetheric interference as cover.*

“Larry I have an idea.” Charles said, squirming his way out of Larry’s grasp and landing on the floor with a thud.

“Well speak up I don’t feel like waiting around for whoever the fuck that was to find us.”

“We should find a mage room to hide in!” Charles said, leaping to his feet and rushing ahead.

“Will that work?” Larry asked.

“Henry said the things are insulated to deal with high powered spells, but they should also prevent any scrying spells from finding us while we’re inside!” Charles said. “We can hide there I think.”

“You think?!” Larry said. “Well worst case I just cut them in half.”

“Right…”

The two hid inside the mage room for about an hour before emerging to find a VERY angry overseer who wanted to know what the two of them were doing inside HIS mage room.

The conversation didn’t go great, and the two were forcibly removed from the guild. Their pursuer had seemingly lost them, and they made it home in one piece.

Henry glanced out across the grasping bay, the place was where the Shine River met the sea, and where myths claimed mana had first been discovered by mankind. The place should have held bad memories for him, but honestly he liked being on the ocean too much. Perhaps he should’ve come back to Avignon the second he’d escaped, he certainly liked the scenery more.

Malory sung a cheery tune from her captain’s quarters while Johnny took care of the sails and rigging. The current would pretty much guide them to the other side of the bay at this point. Mory Island and the Hallcroft Asylum were further out to sea, though easily visible from where they were. Malory had refused to go anywhere near that place, and Henry agreed, nothing good went into, or out of that place. From what he understood the Cult of Progress had ties to the place, for what he didn’t really want to think about.

Magica lay directly in front of them, with the mountains containing the Nirdec Caverns directly behind it. The place had grown tremendously since he’d last seen it. There were so many new factories and large brick buildings that it made Henry’s head spin. The town was a large testing ground for inventors, and many useful inventions had come out of the place.

“Ah Magica, I cannot believe that’s where Rosa received her training from.” Johnny said.

Decision:
1. “She did?”
2. “Why can’t you believe it?”
3. “She must’ve had a hell of a teacher.”

“She must’ve had a hell of a teacher.” Henry said.

“She never spoke much about her, but always spoke kindly of this place. Quite a few good memories.”
“She told me it’s where she grew up after she ran away from home.” Henry said. “Must’ve been tough for her.”

Johnny gazed at Henry for a bit before turning over to Malory. “How long until we arrive.”

“Bout twenty or so minutes, so get comfy.” Malory said. “And don’t think I’m gonna be forgettin bout all these favors I’m givin ya, I expect your help on getting me a crew Henry.”

“The saltwater won’t be good on any crew I could find you.” Henry replied. “You’re out of luck there.”

“Then go be a talent scout damn it.”

“Maybe I should’ve asked your father for help instead. That man knows how to lend a hand.”

“Fawk you.”
The boat pulled into a quiet part of the port and Henry and Johnny disembarked. Malory was fuming by the end of their conversation and Henry laid off because he didn’t want to get stranded on this side of the shoreline. Malory was feisty as all hell and held a grudge like no other. He couldn’t afford to tick her off to much.

“So we’re heading to that blasted place now.” Johnny said.

“I know you hate it but just bear it for now.”

“We both know I could probably put an end to this foul business if you just allowed me free reign.” Johnny said.

“The hells gotten into you lately?” Henry said.

“Ah… nothing.” Johnny said.

“Huh.”

Decisions:
1. Take a detour to ask about Rosa’s old tutor, might be good to have that kinda person on your side.

“So are you going to tell me?” Henry asked

“Nothing to worry about, surely you have plenty of other more pressing concerns.”

“Oh don’t be like that, come on.”

“So what does it feel like being so close to home.” Johnny asked.

“The fuck kinda detour is that?” Henry asked.

The two continued through a few city streets and a fish market before heading further up the mountainside.

“I’ve just been thinking that I might still have family alive, somehow. My brother did have a family, and if the line carried down I might have relatives in a way.”

“I really doubt they’d be really related to you.” Henry said.

“I just worry that some of the people I might have to kill will be my own relatives. It almost makes me happy I don’t always have a say in things.”

“What?” Henry asked.

“Its far easier for me to stomach some of the things I’ve had to do Henry, I’ve never had any control whatsoever. At least after I signed myself away.”

“Fucking hell where is this coming from.”

“After we killed Lisa I began thinking about this.” Johnny replied. “Well, not just that, have you ever considered you might still have some family left, Henry?”

“No. My parents and my brother are dead.” Henry replied. “I don’t have anyone else.”

“You’re father had no siblings, nor did your mother? What about their parents?” Johnny asked. “You should be smart enough to know this, but you’ve never tried to reconnect. I don’t know why I’ve never thought about it much before, I suppose simple joys of being alive have become lost to me. But if you did have any relative or family, why not try to reconnect with them? Your village can’t be too far away.”

The caverns had come into view by the end of their conversation. The rest of the journey would have to be up to Henry’s memory.

Decisions:
1. “This is the end of the conversation Johnny.”
2. “I don’t have any family left, period.”

“If I go back there, someone might recognize me from all those years ago Johnny. That’s… that’s a jar of worms I can’t even begin to imagine.”

“You don’t want to just let the past go?” Johnny asked. “Stop all this, spend what time we have left trying to put things right?”

“Time we have left?” Henry asked.

“The High Seraph isn’t here anymore Henry, I know nobody else really knows what it means but I do. All those stories about border villages and hamlets getting wiped out or near overrun are not just talk, and it’s going to start happening to larger settlements soon. Not to mention what’ll happen once the bigger powers act on it.”

“Shut up Johnny, I really doubt we’re in any danger here. Beyond, yknow, and well, if anyone knew me, then they’d be at risk for just knowing who I am, right?”

“Henry, he is a lot of things, but for all the time I’ve known him, he’s never lied once. As much as his ilk tend to do so, he’s made it a point of pride to never lie, ever. His deal is ironclad, as long as you never bother them…

“You trust him?!”

“I’ve known him for almost five hundred years now Henry. I’d say I know how he acts and how he thinks.”

“And you’d be okay with that? Not getting your revenge?! Just giving up?!”

“Are you?”

“No, I refuse to go back there Johnny, not now not ever.”

“I suppose not. A man who has no home to return to has no future.”

“Speaking of homes, why don’t you ever talk about your home? You never asked me to take you there once, wherever it is.”

“It no longer exists Henry, it was destroyed to the last brick.” Johnny replied. “By a demon, a very foul one, now locked up in the hellvault.”

“You didn’t kill it?”

“You don’t know do you.”

“About what?”

“You can’t kill a demon Henry, only seal it in a vessel or throw it down into the pit, but they can crawl back out given enough time.”

“I will kill that son of a bitch Johnny, I’ll find some way.”

“There’s an old saying that was passed to me by my tutor, Henry.”

“Oh yeah, and what’s that?” Henry replied. “Some shit that’s written on scrolls given out to trainees?”

“Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.”

The two exited into a large series of massive caverns, lit up by some of the largest light runes henry had ever seen. This market was by far the biggest flesh market in the world, and it sure as hell showed its charm off. All sorts of bodies, parts, people, Franks, zombies, and even a few liches could be seen milling about. The whole market was on multiple levels, with buildings being carved into the stalagmites coming out of the floor. Giant mushrooms fed by discarded corpses gave off a dim blue glow.

It had been a very long time since Henry had seen something so majestic.

Decisions:
1. Head down to the pit and see if any fights are happening, might be a good bit of entertainment.
2. Head into the Tongue bazaar for information
3. Find a bar and get a drink, you know a place that makes good corpse wine

Henry took his time to get acclimated, which consisted of finding a bar and having a couple rounds. After he was properly mellowed, he went through a couple of different vendors to find the parts he needed. He could see a few shadows moving at the edge of his vision and he knew that THEY had a meeting hall deeper inside the caverns. Johnny kept his eyeholes peeled the entire time but even with the majestic view Henry suddenly found himself wanting to leave.

He purchased a couple of young male corpses to make into guards as well as spell components, a few more books, some mage essentials and illegal runes, and lastly some complicated components for his new pet. The thing would be a hell of a project but perhaps he could make a frank out of it using the bug as a base. He’d never truly dabbled in making franks before but he was willing to give it a shot.

There were a lot of odd characters in the Nirdec Caverns corpse market, but everyone knew to leave the shades the fuck alone. Nobody really knew how to deal with the fact that a group of them were following a single man. They could avoid his notice but it was difficult to avoid a few thousand people at once.

As Henry and Johnny warily avoided their silent followers, a second group was steadily making their way towards them. A massive frank, easily the size of two men stacked on top of one another, lazily strode through and occasionally over the crowd. Perched atop it was a boy having the time of his life. In front of it was a grizzled older man holding a rope attached to a leash around the creatures neck and a barley adolescent girl trying her best to shrink away from everyone else.

“Henry!” The grizzled older man called out, “I know it’s you boy, I could see that damned red cloak of yours from a feckin mile away!”

“That Henderson’s and his family?” Henry asked.

“Don’t see the wife with them, probably for the best in all honesty.” Johnny replied. “What do you want to do sir?”

“HOW YA DOIN FRAZ, I SEE THE KIDS ARE GROWN RIGHT!” Henry shouted, stopping and waving to the man.”

Fraz Henderson came up and hugged Henry, laughing like a madman all the while.

“And my wife is doing good too ya little shit. I still remember when you were all full of vinegar and causing havoc back in Celeste. Happy to see you’ve come to Avignon for a change!”

“Nice to see a friendly face in this trashheap.” Johnny said. “Although someone who doesn’t mutilate corpses would’ve been preferred.”

“Happy to see you’re still just as charming.” Fraz said. “You know Samantha but I guess you’re not acquainted with Graz.

“Graz?” Henry asked.

“Was my father’s name, he wanted me to name my first born son after him.” Fraz said. “Only took four attempts but I’ve got one.”

“Heh.” Henry said. “Mind if we can find a quiet place to talk, actually had something I wanted to ask about.”

“Sure! OY LUG, TURN ROUND YEAH?” Fraz screamed.

The Frank groaned and then turned around, revealing that it was carrying a shed on its back.

“Step into my office.”

“So you finally did it you crazy old coot.” Henry said.

“Well I was hoping to build an office inside a Frank but this is much more versatile.”

Fraz pulled down a ladder from the shed and the two climbed inside. The interior was surprisingly cozy, even if all the furniture was nailed or otherwise secured to the floor.

“So then, what brings you to this neck of the woods?”

“You invite a man into your office and don’t even offer him something to drink?” Henry asked.

“I see you’ve become an even bigger alcoholic.” Fraz replied. “But you are still correct… I do believe I have something… ah here.”

He pulled out a bottle of scotch out of his desk and poured Henry a glass.

“Oh and I’d hold onto that if I were you, we’re going to start moving now.”

A moment later the room trembled and swayed gently as Lug slowly meandered through the caverns. Henry watched through a window as the scenery passed by.

“Remind you of a boat don’t it?” Fraz joked. “So anywho what do ya want?”

“Well I’ve had a bit of an incident happen in my home the other night. Someone got the bright idea to attack me and my people. Even with the corpse of the fucking thing I don’t have a clue who did it or whats going on.”

“It?” Fraz asked. “What kinda make was it. How complex?”

“No no, it was a living creature. Able to cast spells.” Henry said.

“Tha fuck?” Fraz replied. “Nobody here’s been able to do something like that before.”

“Yeah, which does narrow down my options a bit.” Henry said.

“So where do I come in exactly?” Fraz asked. “Last I checked I don’t owe you any favors.”
“Well I might as well finish explaining.” Henry said. “Thing looked like a fucked up giant insect, and it had blue blood in addition to the spellcasting. Ring any bells?”

“The bug thing does. I knew of a crazy fecking buglover who stopped showing up in the market recently.. Always buying materials from here for his stupid experiments.”

“Does he have a name?” Henry asked,

“I can give you a bit more than a name… but what’s it worth to you lad?” Fraz asked.

1. “A gold coin.”

“I don’t think you have any buisness asking me that.” Henry said, annoyed.

“Well everyone’s been wondering where you got the boy from. Some kinda orphan or something? I know you wouldn’t accept just anyone, since you’re a paranoid son of a bitch. So spill it already.”

“Fucking hell who put you up to this exactly?”

“Believe it or not I’m just that feckin curious. You never really trusted anyone and now you got a small team or some shit. Still I ain’t asking about all of em, just want to know bout that apprentice.”

“Fraz, I like you, you like me, we get along right?”

“Yeah?”

“So I’ll tell you this real carefully and real calmly. Don’t fucking ask me, don’t fucking ever ask me to talk about that.”

“The fuck you say boy?” Fraz asked.

“Fraz if I told you, it’d be all our heads.” Henry said.

Fraz nearly fell out of his chair. Red Cloak Henry, the brat, the twerp. His eyes looked utterly devoid of any emotion other than pure malice. Terror gripped Fraz’s heart though he did a damned fine job of hiding it. Yet Henry didn’t seem like a man in that instant, he seemed more like a horrifying demon, ready to steal his soul. Fraz tried to look away and glance out the window, only to find a couple of shades staring back at them. Fraz decided to drop the subject, he lied to himself and said he didn’t really care anyways.

“S-so then.” Fraz said. “Like I w-was saying.”

“Fraz, just fucking tell me who this man is.” Henry said. “Alright?”

“Fucking hell Henry when did you get like that?”

Henry didn’t say anything, he’d always been like this. He’d taught himself how to use this, to become deadened. It had helped when torturing people, to not think of them as people, however briefly. Eventually he’d stopped thinking of them as living things. It had made life easier. Sometimes, rarely, he brought up that same energy.

“F-fine, fuckin ell. His name is Requin. Requin Del Mar. Mage from a city to the east, don’t know all the specifics, or what city. I just remember him cause he always bought the weirdest components in the market. Don’t even think he practiced the craft. I know he has a fancy little home in Avignon. Asked me to deliver materials once, paid well but didn’t let me enter his home, got real angry when I asked for a little hospitality. Can’t trust a man like that, though you don’t trust feckin anyone.” Fraz said.

“Thank you Fraz.” Henry said.

“So can you call off your little friends?” Fraz asked.

“What?”

“The shades, I think they’re trying to get inside!”

Decisions:
1. *laugh*
2. “They’re harmless.”

Henry's knowledge on shades:

Shades are an immaterial creature in a way similar to ghosts, however they are distinctly inhuman, and unlike human ghosts they can stretch and warp their forms.

Strong light will weaken them but even sunlight will not be able to banish them.

They have strong fear and hatred auras which are able to be toggled, allowing them to bend mortal's emotions to their will.

They move over the ground like living shadows, and are able to fit through any gap, no matter how small. Henry saw a group of them strangle someone to death after crawling through his nostrils once.

He has never seen anyone foolish enough to initiate direct combat with one. When a shade wishes to end a human's life they generally just go for strangulation when the person is sleeping or they will cast a black mana death spell.

Shades can be powered up through applying black mana directly to them, this power up can last for several hours.

Henry's best guess is that only white or blue mana spells will have any real effect on them, as they have no physical body's to kill or destroy and direct physical attacks of course have no effect.

I will answer further questions as requested.
>>
>>3408231
no, shades generally don't directly mess with a person's mind. Any paranoia or terror experienced will be a result of Henry or their fear aura, which is soul based rather than mind based.

Henry has gained a good deal of resistance to this due to his time spent around them of course, but if a bunch of them used their fear aura then they would overpower him.

The Lorekeeper’s Library is the repository for everything that has ever happened, ever will happen, and ever can happen. This place is where reality is written and where the word was founded. To understand its place in the multiverse, one must have a proper understanding of 10th dimensional space, but as the story on Chime (the world we’re reviewing) only takes place in 4th dimensional space, I believe it is outside of the purview of your possible understanding at this point in time.

The greater universe as it is now is what I would describe as a massive cesspit ruled by petty tyrants, gods of questionable moral fiber, and aetheric monstrosities. This multiverse is one which some members of the library currently seek to clean up and properly categorize, despite those chaotic sorts who refuse to allow them to preform our functions. As it stands little overall progress has been achieved in this matter, although this is not a task I am currently assigned.

As for why I’ve picked Chime for the story, it’s a fairly backwater plane located smack dab in a wall made up of dead and shattered planes. As for why such a thing would even exist, and why one would need to construct such a thing, you would need to have an understanding of 7th and 8th dimensional space at the very least. But long story short having a wall of dead world makes travel very difficult and insulates the interior of the artificial multiverse bubble that’s been created from the equipment I possess. Until I can create a narrative that allows me to bore a hole into the bubble, I’m unable to access and stop what’s going on within it. From what I understand, at the center of that bubble exists a being who is trying to pierce the veil and access the library. This cannot be allowed to pass for a variety of reasons.

Mainly because I’d be out of a job and I like my job.
>>
>>3414240
as you can probably guess, I can't very well write a story without things to write it about. Having readers to vote on things allows me to progress the story properly as well. Dead worlds are both boring, and not full of people to write stories about.

Thus they are fairly impenetrable
>>
>>3414262
Seeing as the world of Chime is beginning Industrial Revolution except with magic, how different do you think things will get if not already? Magic being a thing would serve to skip several stages of societal development, if people weren't retarded and if literally everything else on the planet didn't want humans enslaved or eaten.

Henry’s first instinct was to preserve his own life, as such, he went for the door, which he found locked.

“Oy what the fuck you doing?” Fraz asked. “Leave that closed till we get outside the cavern, you weren’t planning on staying right?”

“I do not want to be anywhere near those things Fraz, they’re extremely dangerous.”

“Never considered em a threat, they generally just hang about town and deal with the occasional troublemaker or hang around someone that they’re curious about… kinda odd that so many of them are hanging around you though. They’ve been following you for a bit I think.”

“I hadn’t noticed them but I did feel I was being followed.”

“Keen senses.” Fraz said. “Let’s wait till we get outside yeah? You’re a scary son of a bitch and I don’t really think they’re more dangerous than you are.”

Lug continued to move through a large passageway that led into a maze of tunnels that eventually led outside. Henry could find the way from here or he could try kicking the door open.

Henry waited around nervously, tapping his foot on the ground. He knew better than to try and alert Johnny as the man wouldn’t be able to do much about the shades and the less agitated he was the better, he didn’t want to alarm Fraz’s kids either as he wouldn’t be able to predict how they’d act, and if one came to harm Henry didn’t want to be trapped in a fucking wooden box with the man.

“So why are you so worried about a bunch of shadows?” Fraz asked. “They ain’t never harmed anyone before, worst they do is throw people into the maze if they cause trouble.”

“They can kill people very easily.” Henry said. “Knowing what I know about them and being up in a fucking wooden box… no offense…”

“None taken.”

“… in a fucking wooden box with no place to go isn’t comforting.”

“Aye but most people are trapped in their own little boxes, unable to do much about it.” Fraz said.

“The fuck sorta answer is that?” Henry said.

“Cathar told me that once, before we killed him for trespassing.” Fraz said, “Has some truth to it I think. Most people are trapped in their own little boxes of fear and indifference, only venturing out into the big world if something breaks their box open.”

“I don’t see how that applies here.”

“Well would you have cared about who made that beastie if it hadn’t attacked you and yours?” Fraz asked. “You don’t have any duty or real reason to figure things out.”

“Except to learn how to make more.”

“Aye that’s a good reason. Regardless my point stands.”

By the time they finished talking they were outside and the shades had wandered away from the window and the door. Henry found that the doorway swung open easily.

“See you around Fraz.”

“Aye stop by my homestead some time if you’re in the area. Not too many Cathars around recently. I suppose what with all the troubles. Feckers can barely keep the streets clear of franks at night.”

Decisions:
1. *head to Requin Del Mar’s home.*
2. *Head back to the boat and figure this out tomorrow.*

Henry and Johnny quickly departed, and Henry decided to not reveal to the skeleton that they’d had a couple of guests. They took the shortest path back through Magica and came to the crest of a small hill outside of town. On top sat a rather large home. It was not quite a mansion but was far larger than a townhome and approached the size of the warehouse Henry currently lived in. It was probably properly insulated, and had far more amenities than his warehouse had to boot.

Interestingly enough the front door of the house was kicked in although there was no further signs of violence.

“Probably not inquisitors then.” Johnny said, looking over the damage from outside the gate to the home. “They’d be far less direct, pick the lock if needed but they wouldn’t kick the door in like that without guards standing here.”

“Cathars?” Henry asked.

“Probably, might still be inside.”

“Or someone along to remove the evidence.”

“Also a possibility.”

Decisions:
1. *you don’t feel good about this, call it off*
2. *you can’t risk losing any evidence, head inside with johnny in the front
3. *have Johnny scout things out, though if there are Cathars inside it won’t go great.*

“Gonna take a look, keep any trouble out.” Henry said, grabbing at his sword and placing it at the ready. He didn’t dare unsheathe it though, if he did run into Cathar’s then having it out would only complicate things.

The foyer of the house was fairly undisturbed other than a couple pieces of overturned furniture and a few Knick knacks knocked to the ground. To his left was a kitchen which was in a far worse state of disrepair. There were a host of cabinets with their doors ripped off their hinges. Henry took a peek inside and found they had been splintered against a wall. Several chunks of wood still hung out of the wall yet Henry didn’t have any uneasy feeling in his gut. He figured that this had been caused by the creature, though it would’ve had to be much smaller to fit inside the hallways.

Further inside Henry could hear the sound of someone rummaging through something. Based on the footsteps Henry guessed they were about human sized and still had all the flesh on their bodies. He couldn’t quite guess their weight but he figured three males, two adult and one adolescent.

He grabbed out a couple of daggers and slowly crept out of the kitchen and back down the hallway to a large study. Where a couple of people had gathered.

“Do you think he was raided?” One voice asked, a man’s.

“Doubtful, they wouldn’t have left the door UNTOUCHED.” A second voice complained, a females.

Henry hated being wrong.

“So he did this to himself!?” The first voice asked.

“People do strange things for love, right Adam?”

Nobody responded to that. Henry didn’t know what the fuck was going on.

Decisions:
1. *try to hide and gather more of their conversation*
2. *reveal your presence*
3. *attack them*
4. *leave quietly*
