Cover-art kindly provided by our noble artiste, Draw-anon, who kindly took time off repainting the Sistine Chapel for us. Look upon our prettyboy protagonist. Look upon his devilish smile and despair.

In last thread’s episode of Dad Collector Quest, our hero ENSIGN HARRY FLASHMAN finished up the angst backstory discussion with SwordDad1, acquired hugs, had an angsty political discussion with papaSmo, acquired more hugs, no-one reads these anyway, reached Whiskey Peak to discover the villainous Strawhats had kidnapped a princess (GASP) for vile revolutionary purposes, and killed a sea-king. He also failed to call dibs on fighting Roronoa Zoro. So sad.

We now return you to your scheduled idiocy.

Fortunately, you have a cunning plan, ready-made for just this situation. It consists of pointing at a Klaus and yelling a special code, like so.

“KLAUS MADE ME DO IT!”

As Klaus’ expression immediately turns from surprise to polite innocence, Smoboss looks up, from you to him, eyes narrowing.

“It’s not like I can’t believe that, but if Klaus told you to, would you jump off the damn- yeah, you did that. Never mind.” He sighs. “Come over here, Ensign.”

... He sounds way too calm. You edge back warily. “Why?”

>a noble death

So this is it.

This is how you die.

Not with a bang, but with a whimper, probably from you.

You try not to walk too slowly to your inevitable death, although keeping the slump from your shoulders is too much to ask. Why? Why have you still not updated your will? Tashigi will no doubt take care of your swords, in memory of you, if nothing else. Maybe you should have told her the truth about the shampoo? Especially if Klaus is getting you killed...

You peek up, coming to a halt in front of a suspiciously blank-faced Smoboss. “Please make my death painless, bossman. I don’t like pain.”

“Then stop being a dipshit,” Smoboss bluntly tells you. Then he smacks you upside the head with his smoke, which OW, isn’t painless, thankyouverymuch! “Why the hell did you think taking on a sea-king was a good idea?! If that asshole tells you to do stupid shit, don’t do it! You take orders from me, not him!”

“In my defence, he called me a chicken...”

You get another, slightly gentler, smack around the head, which is when Klaus steps in. “Uh, you might not want to do that, Smo-kun.”

Smoboss scowls at him. “Don’t think you’re getting off scott-free, Klaus.”

“No, I mean, he doesn’t need any more head injuries. Maybe hit somewhere else.”

That gives the bossman pause. “Mm. Good point.”

“Or don’t hit me at all! That’s good too!”

“You want more latrine duty instead?”

“Hit me, bossman! I deserve it!”

Smoboss groans, tilting his head back to stare desperately into the cloudless sky. One of the infantry is trying to mop up the trail of watery-blood you’ve left on the deck. It isn’t working well.

“Just... get cleaned up, idiot. And stop jumping overboard. I can’t handle more mermaids on board.”

>Okay, but you’re punishing Klaus, right?
>(flee before he changes his mind)

You are a manly man of bravery and courage, which is why you promptly vanish in the fastest acceleration known to mankind, leaving only a reddish-pink water trail behind you.

... Now you think about it, you probably use up more water for showers than anyone else on board.

At least you get cleaned up in record time, giving your babies a thorough cleaning of the blood/water/salt/accumulated gritty junk that was trying to attack them.

... Plus, the infantry who pass you in the corridors look on you with impressed awe, which is pretty damn sweet.

>2nd daily action?

>>3386631
Whoops, I thought it was +70 including his DF and +50 with just the jitte... in that case, I’ll increase his bonus. Really should write this stuff down. Okay, +50 for big sis, +70 for papa when he’s not using his DF! Thanks for reminding me.

>>3386636
Wait, is that +70 WHEN using his DF, then? ... shit, whatever, I planned to fiddle with the combat system anyway, and Smoboss has got more training in recently. I’ll stick with +70 with jitte.

>>3386638
To be fair, East Blue is the weakest sea, where many people don’t even believe in DF fruits, they’re that rare. 90% of the pirates he deals with are trash, and the other 10% against a Logia (with a sea stone-topped weapon) is kind of screwed.

With Pistol-chan freshly cleaned and loaded (poor thing, they were absolutely coated), you head up to the deck. Smoboss has fortunately made himself scarce, probably to stack rocks, drink heavily, and beat his head against a wall.

Poor wall.

In any case, having lopped the head off a sea-king has taught you that you maaaaay need some more ranged options, and improving your shooting is the best way to manage that.

And you have JUST the idea.

>recruit Klaus

Klaus isn’t in his storeroom (although there’s a hammock slung in the corner, so yay), or so you check out the galley, which is a safe second-bet, because he’s raiding one of the fridges.

You watch him as he puts together a sandwich which honestly looks ten times better than the food you normally get served. “Should you be doing that?”

“Probably not,” Klaus drawls, “you wanna tell on me for this too, prettysnitch?”

“... Never mind. Anyway, I have an idea for a technique which involves a gun but ALSO a sword. Come help me not kill people?”

He shrugs. “Sure, once I’ve finished my sandwich.”

“I’m glad I have such an enthusiastic teacher.”

“Yeah, you’re real lucky.”

You lovingly and affectionately flip him off, and head up to wait on deck.

Okay, soooooo...

44 for swords, 28 for pistols. That actually gives you a pretty low DC for figuring it out... let's say 30/60/90 for low/medium/high success.

22 is half of swords, 14 for pistols, so bonus of 36. 54 + 36 = 90, +5 for rolling the same number twice. Success of 95, including Haki activation, so +1 to Haki, DC decreases to 82.

95 + 20 Haki bonus is 115, which clears high success.

Writing.
>>
>wow, practising on deck with a teacher means a lower DC than figuring shit out in battle, who knew

You explain the basic idea of your new move to Klaus, who nods.along before giving you his opinion.

"That's stupid. But you might actually pull it off."

"... Thanks? I think?"

He sighs, leaning back against a railing. "The main problem is that it involves both sword and gun, and requires a certain level of talent in both. You, however, aren't too bad at either, prettyboy. It'll take some trial and error, sure, but speaking as someone who sailed the Grand Line for enough years, I've seen way weirder techniques work out."

With that sort-of reassurance, Klaus first clears the area of curious infantry, before having you run through the motions without actually firing.

There's way more.math involved than you would have thought. Not just wind-speed and the like, but angles of deflection, the force increased or decreased by bouncing off the sword, how to angle the sword itself... not to mwntionnfiguring out the best part of the blade to use.

Your brain hurts. Again.

Still, you get your teeth and power through, and after an hour, Klaus finds you ready to try with a single bullet, tossing an air-filled bag overboard and having you target the bobbing buoy.

(115, high success!)

You take a couple of seconds to position Cut-chan, a luxury you won't get in a real fight, and steady your nerves as you pull Pistol-chan's trigger -

- as her barrel points at the perfect angle, the lines of bullets reflecting through the air narrowing down to that one lone that hits the buoy -

A loud crack of gunfire, the high ring of a bullet against steel - and the buoy bursts, sinking pitifully under the waves.

Klaus raises an eyebrow. "Not bad. Again?"

You are overwhelmed by MATH.

It's strangely terrifying.

But, realizing what you did with the first bullet, you calm yourself, focusing on

There.

There it is.

You line Pistol-chan up at precisely the right point, the bullet trail there/notthere, hanging in the sky and then vanishing as the bullet travels down its assigned path, hitting the next buoy Klaus had tossed down, then you changeangleadjustbladegotitfire--

The other buoy bursts following the next crack of gunfire. Klaus leans to look over the railing, giving a short whistle. "I'm actually mildly impressed. Don't get me wrong, a gun'll never be as good as a sword, but I guess that could be useful in a pinch.

"Does Smoboss collect sword-freaks?" You give Cut-chan a quick once-over as you wonder aloud. No dings that you can see, but there s a hint of gunpowder that you don't approve of, which necessitates a quick rub with a cleaning cloth.

"... Maybe," Klaus mumbles. "One last try for the day?"

Actually Billiars would be very useful for learning to hit targets who'd normally be inaccessible. Firstly, say you're surrounded or otherwise have an enemy behind you, and don't have time to turn around aiming and shooting them all? Just stand in place, lifting the sword so part of the blade is above your shoulder, and adjust the blade's angle very slightly with each shot. Much faster than turning. You can also deflect enemy shots rather than having to dodge them.

Next up is that once you've learned how to reflect/deflect stuff, you can bounce bullets off more than one thing. Enemy behind cover? Shoot a bullet at their friend's sword while it's at the right angle to hit their buddy. Hell, even make it ricochet off multiple objects to hit a target that would normally be too far to hit.

Let that be a lesson, prettyboy - unless you can recognize a bad angle and correct it on the fly, you're gonna throw off any subsequent shots, and the more you shoot, the wilder they're gonna get."

You scowl, still staring out at the two bags. 'So what, stick with a couple of bullets for now?"

"Right now? Don't use it in combat, but practice with three, maybe four max. You catch on quick, it should be fine." He puts his flask away from drinking. "More importantly, don't slack off on Kami-e and metal-cutting, or I'll kick your ass."

"... Thanks."

"My pleasure, prettyboy! Now let's clear out so the men can actually do their jobs."

That said, you shake your fist in vengeance at the bags, and head to your cabin.

Nice one, Bob, you'll get a medal for that.

>71, 323/350 so close

Klaus puts you on thicker metal this morning, because 'if you can slice through a seaking, you can cut through this'.

Apparently you can't. Mostly.

About 80% of the time, you can score deep gouges through the metal - the rest, you can only make scratches. As for actually severing them into two, thin sheets you can manage, somehow carving your blades through them, but anything thicker than half an inch is impossible to cut straight through.

Sometimes you almost think you have it, like you're on the verge of something, but then you lose the feeling - an insurmountable barrier between thin metal and thick plating.

You can't understand why.

"Don't worry about it," Klaus says, waving you off. That's weirdly nice of him. "I got a better idea for next lesson, prettyboy." Then he grins like a shark.

... You take back the weirdly-nice thought.

Around lunchtime, the news coo arrives, with (amazingly enough) the newspaper. New bounties - pirate attacks - Government policy changes - local festivals - absolutely no mention of the Strawhats. Wherever they are (hopefully at the bottom of the sea), they're keeping their heads down.

... You gotta call dibs on Roronoa for next time.

"Any mention, mi-mi-mi, of Princess Vivi?"

You look up from the newspaper to the hopefully face of Curly. "Sorry, no. But hey, no news is good news right now, isn't it?"

Curly sighs. "Perhaps. Still, it's a constant concern, to know she's reliant on either a criminal organization, or Revolutionary pirates, knowing I failed to save her."

"It's not that bad, Captain Curly," you reassure him. "And you did your best, that's all anyone can ask. It's not you handed her over to them, after all."

"... Yes. That is absolutely true." Curly clears his throat a little awkwardly after that.

>interrogation time

"So Curly, do you have any idea who Baroque Works' big boss is?"

"Mi-mi-mi... sadly, no." Curly shakes his (curly) head sadly. "Though I learned much about their organization, the overall leader is a shadowy figure, and all those who even suspect his true identity are quickly killed. All I know is that he's currently working out Alabasta, as he plots to destroy our Royal family."

"You keep saying 'he'. Are you sure it's a guy?"

"I - suppose... not?"

"Because I'm just saying, it would suck if we change right past the big boss because we think it's a dude, and it's really a dudette."

Curly looks helpless. "It could be a woman, yes?"

You purse your lips. "A woman... keeping their identity that secret... who would be the least suspected one...?"

Could it be... Princess Vivi is the secret leader of Baroque Works, and she ran away because she needed a more active hand in the running of things?!

... No, that's dumb. Besides, the poor girl's a victim in all of this. You dread to think how she s being treated by Baroque Works, or Government-hating maniacs like the Strawhats.

"Is there... some problem?" Curly asks, a little warily, as you stare thoughtfully into space.

"Nah... just wondering if the princess is being tortured right now."

You barely notice Curly pale, too busy considering if Roronoa is as good with knives as swords, as you flip through the rest of the newspaper.

Oh hey, some fancy 'Kitetsu' sword got found.bsck in Loguetown. Tashigi'll be furious about that one, especially as it's by some criminal. You've never heard of this Bartolomeo guy before, but Smoboss'll take care of him when you all get back.

You take the newspaper to see Tashigi, just in case she hasn’t read today’s news yet. Plus, she might need it for emergency tissues if she cries a lot.

“Tashiiiiiiiigi,” you call, rapping, rapping at her cabin door, quoth the seagull ‘Justice, caw’. Or something. “Hey, beloved senior Ensign, I totally don’t have horrible news for you that I think you might stab me over! Can you open the door?”

“... That doesn’t encourage me to open it,” you hear Tashigi say, but the door opens anyway to reveal her looking at you curiously. “What kind of news? Has something big happened?”

You wait.

Her eyes scan along the words.

You wait.

She comes to an end.

“Oh! That’s interesting. Thank you for letting me know.” Smiling brightly at you, she hands the paper back, reaching up to adjust her glasses.

“Uh. You’re not mad?”

She laughs. “Why would I be mad about something like this? Some random criminal finding a Sharp grade sword that was in my hometown the whole time?”

“Yesssss?”

“Don’t worry.” Her smile widens. “I’ll just have to kill him.”

“Um.”

“And pry Kitetsu from his cold, filthy fingers.”

“... Um.”

“In fact, right now, I feel good enough for a spar! Care to join me, Flashman?”

“Yeeeeeeesss?” You’re not really sure you WANT to spar, because her smile suggests less ‘spar’ and more ‘severing of limbs’, but if you say no, it might turn to ‘severing of head’, and that’s somewhat more important to you. “Just... be gentle with my weapons?”

“I’d never harm them,” Tashigi reassures you sweetly. You note she doesn’t say she won’t hurt you.

If you had a mother, this is exactly the time you’d be crying for her. Instead, you find yourself trailing after a still-smiling Tashigi, who almost seems to float with an air of perfect calm and grace, over to the sparring area.

Swords are actually the highest because I add standard Marine Swordsmanship and your sneaky-misdirection Pouncing Racoon Style together. It adds up to about +44, I think.

Also thinking about giving you guys a bonus when you dual-wield (even though that’s every fight.). It really doesn’t makes sense that if you fought someone equally skilled but wielding only one sword, you’d only do the same amount of hits/damage. Maybe a flat +5? Or a bonus fraction depending on the skill levels of whichever weapons you’re using?

+44 bonus for Cut-chan, +28 for Jitte-san. Think I’ll add a +6 dual-wield bonus (+4 from first digit of Cut-chan’s bonus, +2 from first digit of Jitte-san’s.)

Personally prefer the scaling, mostly because I like that everything depends on how good we actually are with our weapons rather than dual-wielding inherently being a certain amount better than regular wielding.
>>
>>3388747
if i may make a recommendation and do a number crunch real quick i think duel wielding should work as follows

>Single Weapon
Weapon bonus + 0 = Modifier

>Dual Wield
(Weapon 1 Bonus + Weapon 2 Bonus) x Dual Wield penalty with the ambidexterous im thinking around 0.75 = Modifier

>Zoro style
(Weapon Bonus 1 + Weapon Bonus 2 + Weapon Bonus 3) x 3 weapon style penalty im thinking around 0.625 = Modifier

Assume All weapon bonuses are at a flat 30 ignoring style and they have the max reduction for being ambidexterous ect.

Single +30
Double +45
Tripple +56.25
Round down because you allways should in games like this to +56

In the case of dual wielding swords like Cut-chan and Ka-tan or tripple wielding swords like zoro you just add the type multiple times. so our sword bonus would be counted for weapon 1 and two in that case.
>>
>>3388753
Fear of big sis overrides Garp trauma apparently
>>
>>3388774
It should be noted i tried a 0.5 penalty for triple wield but that just came out as the same as dual wield which is stupid.

Also without having ambidextrous the penalty would be much more painful. making it a horrible idea unless u know what you are doing. such as dual wield starting at a x0.1 to the weapon skills and slowly climbing up. giving a sizable benefit for a substantial amount of time training. with triple scaling even better because as flashman always says.

More weapons is always a good idea
>>
>>3388774
God, I hate maths... looking at the numbers, I’m running into problems when it comes to different weapons with different skill levels Vs using the same type of weapon (ie, two swords). If you use a sword and a jitte, I’m going to take the roll and use it twice, adding the appropriate skill bonus to each, plus dual-wield bonus. But with two swords...

Okay, never mind, I FIGURED SHIT OUT. Sort of. Apologies for adjusting combat on the fly, guys, everything is subject to change, etc.

(Also as for triple wield, which would take a LOT to master, I feel like the bonus would be somewhat smaller. I know you said 0.5 didn’t work, but assuming one would be triple-wielding with their mouth, that means there’s much smaller degree of movement allowable by the third weapon. Perhaps that could be solved by giving a malus to the skill level of the third weapon rather than the bonus, but oh well, not a problem for now.

SO.

97 + 44 + 4 (dual-wield) = 145 + 20 Haki = 165
97 + 28 + 2 = 127 + 20 = 147
Versus
75 + 65 = 140

+1 Jitte-san awakening, +1 Cut-chan awakening, +1 Haki, Haki DC dropped to 75

Tashigi looks utterly at peace. Fortunately, you're not a TOTAL idiot, when she charges at you with a ferocious sweep of Shigure, you're alrea moving, leaping back out or range.

Like hell you're risking blocking that, not with the woman who can already cut metal.

While she recovers her balance from the miss, you side-step, darting around her off-hand side while moving closer. Jitte-san's range is slightly greater than Cut-chan's; you send him lashing out at her, more to distract her than any real attempt to hit, while you close in.

Shigure rushes to parry him - Cut-chan darts in, aiming for her wrist. She disengages immediately, moving smoothly to your left, forcing you to take the fraction on a second necessary to halt and change the direction of Cut-chan's strike, while you stab Jitte-san in a not-entirely-honorable blow down at Tashigi's feet. He may not be pointy, but getting a solid blow from one of his tines into your fragile toes will seriously mess up your day, you suspect.

Tashigi moves her foot quickly, but that means stepping in closer, at which point it's a test less of skill than speed and perception - and as you breathe heavily, forcing yourself calm enough for Haki to work its magic, that sort of thing becomes second nature.

Tashigi's faster than you are, fast enougg to probably keep parrying youe blade and jitte for a long while. But when the potential paths of her own sword narrows down to twelve-six-three-one in an instant, the fact you can see where her sword is going, combined with two weapons, means her advantage is steadily overwhelmed.

For two minutes, the deck rings with repeated shrieks and clangs of metal, almost rapid stacatto, and the strain on your mind from keeping up the Haki is almost too much, your breathing harsh and brows pinched with concentration - finally, as Tashigi bellows a cry of frustration, Shigure lashes out just a little too wildly, and you spot the opening.

You step in, Cut-chan swinging up to rest her tip against Tashigi's chest, pointing up into her heart.

"I win. Please don't murder me?"

(General Fitness +1!)

Tashigi scowls at you between heavy breaths that match your own. "... You're better than I expected..."

"Thanks. I think." Your breathing steadies as the two of them rest, and you let Cut-chan drop back down. Despite the twinge of pain in your head - you've never held Observation for that long before - you still feel oddly calm. Peaceful, even.

Tashigi huffs, sheathing Shigure. "I'm going to have to up my training again," she sighs, but at least she looks better than before. "Especially if I want to face Roronoa."

Maybe if Smoboss becomes Grand-Ultra-Mega-Fleet Admiral, he'll let you use your Bureacracy powers to put an official Dibs Protocol in the rule books! Or maybe he'll toss you out of a window.

>MINE

This needs to be nipped in the bud. "I CALL DIBS."

"W- no! I already called dibs before Whiskey Peak! "

You fold your arms. "That was FOR Whiskey Peak, they weren't there. Thus, the dibs expired."

"Dibs don't just expire, Flashman! They're permanent."

"That sounds like the kind of thing someone who forgot to call dibs again would say."

Tashigi's eyes narrow. "What really matters... is who tells the Captain they have dibs."

You stare at each other. Unyielding. Unstoppable force versus immovable object. A rivalry foretold by destiny.

Then you both turn and charge towards Smoboss' office.

Oops.

You do the only thing you can think of, hearing Tashigi come to a halt behind you, and break out the finger-guns. "Sorry~?"

Smoboss twitches harder.

Which is when maniacal, horribly familiar laughter breaks out from the Den Den. "Hey, who was that?! He sounds enthusiastic!"

You feel the blood drain from your face, and the will to live drain from your everything.

"Ha!" Tashigi mutters from behind, backing away.

"I still have dibs," you croak out, eyes turned up to the reliving simplicity of the office ceiling rafters.

Heavy footsteps sound, before Smoboss peers down at you, looking annoyed. Ah. You're still on the floor.

"Brat, is that all you have to say?"

"... I beat Tashigi?"

His eyebrow raises at that, before glancing in what's probably Tashigi's direction. "Seriously? Huh. ... All right, you get dibs."

You manage a shaky fist-pump.

"And two weeks extra latrine duty for breaking into my office."

You sob. Loudly.

"Captain, I think he might have been punished enough..."

"Hmm." You feel his boot nudge your side. "... You might be right, Tashigi. All right, one week extra. Assuming Garp doesn't kill him."

Smoboss packs you off surprisingly nicely. Maybe be feels a little guilty for setting Garp on you. Maybe he's impressed you beat Tashigi. Either way, you go for a long lie-down that leads to reading some more of the Haki book, and then falling into a deep sleep.

If you have nightmares of being chased for hours by a giant cannonball with Garp's laugh and dog hat, you're not going to mention it to anyone.

The next morning, Klaus takes one look at your groggy face and blindfolds you. Weird.

What's even weirder is when you slice through a thin sheets of metal, and Klaus rips your blindfold off to reveal it was twice as thick as you'd been told.

"I can't believe I have to say this to YOU," Klaus grumbles, "but less thinking, prettyboy. Your confidence is shit but your skills aren't."

That might be the nicest compliment you've ever had. You spend the aftermath staring at the metal and trying to figure out how you sliced it when you were judging it to need less effort.

"Your body adapted, even if your conscious mind couldn't keep up and work it out," Klaus says, which makes zero sense to you. "Congrats! You're an actual swordsman now! Once you can do it reliably."

You spend two whole hours having Klaus hammer that ability into you, which isn't fun... but now you can literally cut people's swords in half, so who cares?

"Tomorrow, we start the real lessons," says Klaus, as he finally wanders off like you haven't just blown all your expectations out of the water.

You might beam a little. Or a lot.

__________

>RENAISSE - RIP-OFF VENICE

Renaisse is bigger than you expected. A population of nearly twenty-thousand packed into the main settlement, along with various outlying villages and farms, and a large Marine base.

It's a weird place. A center of art and culture where people love to act smug about aesthetics, artwork and music, and canals and water-ways slice through the city, people travelling mostly by bridge or boat. Clockwork is a big thing here, too.

The other major thing is the masks. Mandatory masks for men, for women, for children, with strict rules for the decoration and coloring based on your class, wealth and job.

It's really. Goddamn. Weird.

"It looks like infantry have a standard mask," Tashigi muses, rooting through the crate of small white seagull-esque masks that the local Marines - wearing the same type - had brought as you docked. Apparently anyone who leaves the ship has to wear one. There's a small selection of fancier ones for officers, but you're pretty sure Smoboss would rather carve his own face off than wear one. Or carve the face off whoever tried to make him wear one, rather.

On the other hand, it's officially your own ship's responsibility to transfer the prisoners to the local HQ...

"MINE!" You happily claim a totally sweet dragon mask, passing over your second choice - a flamingo mask in honor or your favorite drink - with regret.

Tashigi takes a fancy, full-face one with swirls and curlicues, more abstract than themed, probably because there wasn't a mask based around swords.

The White Mist will be docked in town for the rest of the day; as for yourself

All that remains, after giving the others the okay to raid the masks, is to convince Smoboss to wear a mask.

You and Tashigi, you can tell, both suspect it's not going to end well.

"Like shit I'll wear one," Smoboss says bluntly, which confirms it.

You and Tashigi look at each other helplessly. "But Smoboss, it's a local law! You can't disobey it!"

He snorts, plumes of smoke lashing out from the cigars. "What a stupid law. What are they going to do, arrest me?"

"I... think so?"

Smoboss fixes you with a ' just try to arrest me, you little shit' look, before Tashigi steps in.

"Sir, it's only to transfer the prisoners, it won't take long. You can come back to the ship right after!"

"Or I could just take them without a mask," he states.

"But that's considered indecent, here! It's like running around without - without -" She blushes furiously, not yet wearing her own mask. Poor, innocent Tashigi. You yourself can list a whole range of body parts with only mild blushes and a little sniggering!

Smoboss shrugs. You guess a guy who walks around with his chest on display is less than concerned about showing his face. "I'll turn my eyes to smoke."

"... That's really creepy, Smoboss."

"It could be a throwable weapon in a pinch, Bossman, just to smack someone further away than usual!"

"Seeing as I can fly, idiot, If be more likely to hit you with it," Smoboss says, unimpressed.

"Oh. Well, ah - come on Smoboss! Why not pick something scary as shit to go with your smoke and scare them senseless? Besides, you may be a Logia, but do you really think the brass will overlook you leaving Loguetown if the first thing you do in the Grand Line is get smacked with a public indecency charge?"

Smoboss' scowl grows at that last bit, but you can see he realizes you have a point.

"Shit," he mutters. "Fine, I'll take one of those infantry seagull ones. They're not too hideous."

"There's a flamingo one that might suit y-"

"Don't piss me off worse than I am, brat."

Well. You'll count it as a victory.

FLOWERS ACQUIRED

I have no idea what they are, but they’re definitely some sort of... flowery... thing. With leaves!

>68 - nothing yet...

Getting to the local suppliers requires transport via the oversized gondola-boat-whatever-they-ares, that ply the canals. Yu (who attracts startled looks from passengers in passing books) seems especially delighted by the event, peering overboard to watch the schools of shimmering fish below. Why a mermaid would be excited by fish, you have no clue.

Personally, you’re content to watch the passing architecture, every house- or shop-front perfectly maintained, while the list of supplies rests in your pocket. Food, medical equipment, supplies for ship maintenance and repairs - Marine-specific supplies such as new uniforms will be supplied by the local base, but there’s still plenty to arrange. Smoboss should be picking up the Eternal Pose to Alabasta as well.

Mina stares about her in delighted awe (as do Sunglasses and Hat, despite pretending not to), while Tashigi keeps an eye on the infantry. Curly seems unaffected by it all, but you guess he’s used to the finery of a royal court.

Sorry guys, I died. Better now.

>stabbies

You watch the people on the boats or strutting across the narrow walkways and bridges, and can't help but notice something. "Is it me, or are most of the guys here wearing swords?"

Tashigi sniffs. "Rapiers and sabers, sure, but most of them are ornamental. I doubt anyone here would know how to them." You guess ornamental swords are some sort of Evil Cardinal Sin to real swordsmen, judging from Sunglasses' and Hat's nodding.

"Actually, the act of duelling is considered an art form here," Curly comments, as you sail past a massive display of flowers reined around an admittedly impressive row of statues. "While restrained by far more rules than an actual fight, mi-mi-mi, most men here know how to put on a decent show for a few hits, and the higher-ranks make a regular event of challenging all and sundry."

Damn, that was a lecturing tone. You kind of felt like you were back in the Academy. Is there gonna be a test later? "I hope they use better swords than those flashy things," Tashigi sighs, obviously unimpressed by the velevet-coated sheathes and silver-plated hilts of the passing common-folk.

As for you, you're insulted. "Hey! What's wrong with flashy?"

"... Never mind."

You make sure to scowl at her very severely for the next few minutes. Then you remember you're wearing a mask and sulk instead.

"Our destination!" The boat slowly pulls into the crowded docks for the market district at your boatsman's call, Tashigi passing over the transport fee while Sunglasses as Hat heft Yu's stretcher up, causing gasps from locals who catch sight of the mermaid.

"We're going to cause a scene," Curly murmurs, sounding nervous.

You clap him on the back. "Ah, it's fine! There's definitely no s
Strawhats here and even if Baroque Works was here, why would they pick a fight with a bunch of random people like us?"

Curly relaxes slightly beneath his crow mask as your group moves out, heading towards the first contact on the list, nodding acknowledgement. Besides, who'd start something in a crowded place like this?

>82, missed that 90 DC for Heart Pirates, oh well

The directions on your list are thankfully very precise - it's almost like Smoboss told the local base you were some kind of idiot or something. Hmm. In any case, you lead the way through the colorful market with a decent amount of shoving, thanks to the constant crowds. Each shove gets you a glare and aborted yell from either the man you knocked into, or a man with a woman you pushed past, before they recognize the uniform and quickly hurry past.

In fact, it seems to be happening with everyone in the group - everyone keeps Mina and Yu firmly in the middle, but it's as if the locals are desperate to challenge anyone who so much as bumps into them. Hell, from what you see and hear around you, there's a challenge to a duel for selling rotten fruit, followed by a challenge to a duel for insulting them by accusing them of selling rotten fruit.

"These people are nuts," you mutter to Curly, who's the only one in your group not bewildered by the locals apparently wanting to stab everybody for so much as looking at them wrong. Actually, maybe that's why they wear masks, to prevent duel based on 'bad' eye contact.

"Renaissans do take their honor very seriously, mi-mi-mi," Curly politely demure, which sounds like fancy noble speak for 'Yeah, they're totally batshit, let's get this trip over fast'.

"I'm so glad we're doing this, and not Captain Smoker," Tashigi says, as you manage to brush past some guy without touching him. He almost looks disappointed at the lack of opportunity to be offended.

"Yeah, I'm pretty sure Smoboss would've snapped by now," you muse. And by the way, how much silk and lace can you fit into one market place? And why are all these women wearing big, puffy dresses in such a crowded place? Are they TRYING to limit the space even more?

"Actually, I think everyone wold have cleared out of his - Wait." You see Tashigi tense up, although her tone seems excited. "Guys, keep going. I'll catch up in a minute!"

And then, like a lunatic, she charges out from your assorted Marine/civilian crowd, a charging woman with glasses awkwardly placed over her silvery mask.

"Tashigi, what are you-?" You manage, before the passing shoppers put her out of reach and sight of your suddenly paused group. "... Okay, that was weird."

"She knows where we're going," Sunglasses encourages, still energetic despite the weight of Yu lounging imperiously as she admires the surroundings. "Let's just keep-"

"What's the hold-up?" The shrill voice breaks through the hubbub, and you just manage to see one of those flouncy, inbred types near the back of your infantry group. He looks pissed-off beneath the jewel-embedded half-mask and... beauty spot? Wow. "Move out of the way, commoners! Who's in charge of this rabble?"

Flouncy dude purses his lips, the powdered... you hope it's a wig and not his real hair... wig-thing wobbling faintly. "You! You dare insult the perception of a member of the august Cagna clan?! After blocking my way! Apologize, commoner!"

Crossdressing is rapidly approaching... but not for Flashy.

>insert marine copypasta here

"You dare insult the honor of a Marine Ensign?! Apologize, creepy fop!"

The rapidly increasing crowd (oh, you have an audience, how lovely) gasps. Some women swoon, though whether that's real shock or because their corsets are too tight, you have no clue.

As for Fop, he flushes a deep crimson, one hand reaching to grasp at the jewelled hilt of his sword. "You- never have I received such an insult! I challenge you to a duel, commoner, much as it will dirty my blade!"

"Duel! Duel! Duel!" Yu cheers, clapping enthusiastically with every repetition. Mina happily joins in. "Duel! Duel! Duel!"

... Right. Thanks, girls.

You and Fop try to ignore their drama-ruining chant, even as the crowd takes up their cheers.

"As the challenged, you may select either time or place!" Fop points at you with a perfectly manicured nail, lace sleeves overhanging his elegant hand. "Choose which, commoner!"

There is ONLY ONE OPTION. "I choose time," you loudly declare. "And that time is RIGHT NOW!"

Shrieks and cries of excitement ring out. Damn, this duelling stuff makes you pretty popular, huh?

Fop clenched his fist. "Very well! Verily, I shall have you beaten and kneeling before the clock chimes for my afternoon tea, peasant! For location, I choose... the duelling stage of my father's palace, the Palazzo Cagna! We shall leave right now, that I may display your shame to the entire island!"

Excited gasps ring out, and you pause, leaning to whisper to Curly, "Is that a big deal?"

"Mi-mi-mi... the Pallazo Cagna is the home of the ruling family," Curly sighs, sounding oddly despondant. "It appears you've picked a duel with one of its princelings..."

"So one of you knows their betters!" Fop sniffs proudly, crossing his silk-clad arms. "And today, the Palazzo's duelling stage hosts the national competition for finest duellist! Nobles and commoners alike will see your humiliation!"

You're practically carried along by the cheering crowds, back the way you came, towards the marketplace docks - everyone once more settles into boats, the oarsmen confused by the sudden level of customers.

Does everyone in the market wanna see this?!

Fop and his three muscled lackeys insert themselves into your group's boat, the former elegantly crossing his legs as he sits. "It's only a short journey to my father's palace, foreigners," he says, smirking smugly and other words beginning with 'sm'. But not smokily, that's a Smoboss word. You shrug. "First up, is this to death, or first blood, or what?"

Fop scowls. He's about your age, you think, though with all that wig, face-powder and fancy mask, who could tell? "How barbaric! We would never duel to the death! ... Unless agreed beforehand. No! We shall duel to surrender or severe injury, as per standard... or we could take part in today's competition, I suppose, which has more rules for defeat."

"Okay, and second - I don't have a duelling sword. Is a katana or cutlass okay?"

Fop sniffs. "I suppose it's a noble's duty to lower themselves to a commoner's capabilities... for a commoner cannot be expected to ascend to a noble's standards, ohohohoho! Very well, you may use either, or borrow one of my men's duelling swords."

Mina gives a small cheer. "We're gonna go to a fancy palace AND see Flashy kick butt! This is great!"

"A-ah, perhaps this won't be the best sight for a little girl..." Fop says weakly, apparently just now realizing how odd your entourage is. "There's quite a bit of blood at these things..."

Weirdly savage write-in...

>my italian names are impeccable

You make a thoughtful noise. "That's a mouthful, I'm gonna call you Fop."

"WHY YOU-"

While Fop froths over something, his lackeys frantically trying to calm him, you lean back to check how the others are.

Mina and Yu are, naturally, thrilled by all this (Yu in particular also enjoys the attention she's getting from the crowded boats of market-goers who are coming to watch - every regal wave or kiss she blows them has men tossing flowers and cheers, and women tittering demurely. You're kind of disturbed).

Hat and Sunglasses... apparently want to join the tournament. So that's a thing. You assume sign-ups will still be open when you get there.

And Curly... he seems kind of resigned to the whole thing. "I've been dragged on stranger excursions," he says. Whatever that means.

You dock a distance from the Palazzo, which towers in gleaming white marble and stone, easily visible from where royal staff help Fop off the boat, apparently shocked he deigned to ride in a commoner's vessel.

"This way!" He leads you towards steps up to a collonaded entrance, the area thronged with crowds of excited people. "The tournament should be starting in thirty minutes, but we can use the duelling stage before then!"

>tournaments are for pussies

"Sounds good!" You follow his lead along with the rest, except for Sunglasses and Hat - they vanish off to one of sign-up booths, mostly empty this late, but still open.

While Fop leads the way at a strut, you and the others (Yu's stretcher now carried by two of Fop's lackeys, which you suppose is kind of polite) admire the sheer opulence of the Palazzo.

This is clearly some kind of public part, or at least made so for today - elegant signs point you all towards the Duelling Arena, which is a short but still crowded walk.

So enthusiastic are the people as they stand and talk or charge onwards towards their seat, they don't even try to challenge each other to duels, merely settling for glares or rattled swords as they bump each other.

"Prince Stronzo! It's really him!"

"Ah~ so regal!"

... Okay. Apparently Fop's pretty popular, from the way people turn and whisper in awe as he passes, your original audience still following behind. Ahead of you, Fop is clearly preening at the overheard praise.

"Is he competing in this year's tournament?" The gossip continues as you eavesdrop.

"I don't think so, I heard he wanted to give someone else a chance..."

"Ah! So noble!"

"The Duelling Arena!" Fop steps through a massive gateway, spreading his arms to show you... wow. A massive arena, raised stage in the middle of the circular area - You could probably fit five thousand people in here, which is half the damn city. Only half the seats are filled at the moment, but judging by all the people still coming in, you're pretty sure they'll all be taken soon

"People come from island around to witness our yearly tournament," Fop brags, before telling one of his lackeys to go and let his father know he's using the duelling stage for a pre-tournament duel. "This year our first prize is something spectacular - a Skillful Grade Sword!"

OKAY, calling Tashigi is a definite (and one I'm delighted by and want to munch popcorn over), but before that...

While the others head off to find seats, you fold your arms at Fop. "Hold up. Are there any prizes for OUR bout?"

"Okay, cool, but any prize for winning?"

"I... can only assume this is one of your barbaric foreign customs. Very well!" He strikes a pose, causing oohs and aaahs from the nearby audience. "Flashman, are you talking about the tournament?!" She sounds weirdly frantic. "Listen, you mustn't go! Absolutely do NOT watch th- I-have-to-go!"

CLICK.

..... Okay. That was weird.

........... Oh well.

You head down the aisle after Fop, down the stairs towards the arena, and meet up with a besuited man with a microphone standing beside it.

"Prince Stronzo!" He bows deeply, with an extravagant flourish, a charming smile beneath the plain black domino mask. "I hear you're honoring us with a pre-tournament duel?"

Fop smirks, waving a hand airily. "Well, it seemed cruel to join the tournament again, after winning two years in a row. When I ran into this Marine Officer ad had a disagreement, this seemed like just the thing."

"Oh? Duelling a commoner?" The announcer looks at you curiously.

"About that..." Fop leans into him, hand covering his mouth, but you can just about hear him whisper. "He's an incognito prince, so keep it quiet!"

"Ohhh!" Announcer-dude looks at you with an excited gleam in his eye, especially once he sees what sword you're wielding, your other weapons left (reluctantly) in the care of the others. "And against a katana! What a match! Tell me, what's your name, Ensign?"

"Flashman," you cheerfully state, mind still working over what Tashigi said. Is there some kind of plot? Where could she be infiltrating?

"Flashman? Oh, are you a relation of the Ensign Harry Flashman who's signed up for the tournament? How delightful! Your brother, perhaps?"

"Uh. Can I... see Harry before we start?"

"Sure, sure!" The announcer turns slightly to point out the line of people - contestants, presumably, by the numbers they're wearing pinned to their tops - filing out from one of the doors. "There he is - number 16!"

You stare up at number 16. Even from this distance, you can recognize the black hair, the flowery top - fully buttoned over a flatter-than-normal chest - and the glasses hanging over a silvery half-mask.

You can also see, as 'Harry Flashman' gets closer, the stubble across his chin and around his mouth.

Stubble that looks oddly flat. Almost like someone grabbed a pen and just drew a load of dots to try.and make themselves look more like a guy.

You know when 'Harry' sees you, because that's when they freeze up, head turned towards you, mouth in a horrified 'o'... Before they slowly, awkwardly, raise their hands.

And finger-gun at you.

This is the happiest day of your life.

"It's so wonderful to compete on the same stage as my brother," you say, as the demonic grin grows across your face. You can't help the finger-guns back either, even as Tasharry trembles in the line of contestants approaching the stage.

Wait. You still have your camera.
"Yup," you croon, as you lift it and start taking pictures of her growing horror. "That's my bro. Younger bro. Shame of the family. Yup."

>this train has no brakes

"Tashigi," you say sweetly, as you take a few more photos. Tashigi has given up trying to hide behind the other competitors now, too close by far as they ring around the raised arena, and appears to be considering seppuku instead.

"All right! Let's get on stage and I'll introduce you!"

You and Fop follow him up the short stairs to the stage, and take your places in the center. Fop draws his rapier in a graceful flourish - you draw Ka-tan in an extravagant, flashy series of moves, because fuck you, why not.

"Introducing the 372nd Annual Renaisse Duelling Tournament!" The announcer's voice echoes out loud and deep, and you glance quickly around to see the seats are now all filled, the crowd quieting their clamouring as they eagerly listen to the announcement.

"Before we begin with the first rounds, we're honored to present a duel between our local hero and reigning champion, Prinze Stronzo...!

The crowds erupts in screaming joy, while Fop preens to the shrieks of women demanding to have his babies. Your ears hurt.

"... and a foreign newcomer, the Marine Ensign Tashigi Flashman!"

There are still cheers, quieter this time, although particularly loud - ah, there's your friends over there (looking confused at the name), and those are the crowd of market-goers who followed you all here.

"And as a bonus, Ensign Tashigi's younger brother - also an Ensign - Harry Flashman will be competing in the tournament today, as number 16! Give it up for this family affair!" He points down at Tasharry, all lights and attention suddenly swinging to the frozen face of your new little brother.

She coughs under the attention, voice deepening to to most awful fake-male voice you've ever heard. "H-hi?"

Wild applause and cheers are flung into the air, sounding honestly excited about Little Ensign Fake Stubble.

You're pretty sure they'd applaud anything right now.

"And in the audience! Our honored guests from many countries, as well as representatives of the Marines, Commodore Wazowski, and Captain Smoker!"

You look up.

Over a patch of the seating, a cloud of cigar-smoke hangs menacingly. Beneath it, a man wearing a seagull-styled mask and a Marine jacket stares down at you.

He seems to be clutching at the seat hand-rests very hard.

You gaze up at the man you least wish to see on this horrible, cruel, godforsaken world. Why couldn't it have been someone less inclined to kill you? Like a Pirate Emperor?

While the announcer lists a bunch of foreign representatives or sponsors or whatever (not really your priority), you lock eyes with Smoboss and pointedly jab your finger at Tashigi.

'She started it,' you mouth under the mask.

The smoke cloud thickens.

Ah, well. You tried.

Accepting your death, you slowly raise your hands, Cut-chan's hilt grasped loosely in one, and finger-gun at him.

Smoboss raises a finger to his neck, and makes a slicing motion across it.

Hmmm.

Guess you'll die.

"- this match will proceed after a few words from our duellists! Prince Stronzo?"

Fop stops trying to work out what the hell you're doing, and gracefully takes the microphone. "Beloved subjects! I, Prince Stronzo, swear to bring victory against this one who insulted me! In the name of Renaisse!"

You're somewhat deafened by the resulting cheers and kyaaaaahs, a bouquet of roses nearly smacking you in the face as flowers and petals rain down.

"And Ensign Tashigi?"

... Oh, yeah. That's you.

"Uh - Well - on that note... if our duellists will take their positions - salute each other - BEGIN!

You aren't exactly with rules of duels, but seeing as this isn't part of the tournament, it probably doesn't matter, and you're pretty sure someone will tell you if you do something blatantly wrong. Maybe.

With that, you step in casually, Cut-chan held in a loose, amateur grip that makes Fop scoff in disdain, his rapier whipping out to slice at your wrist.

You promptly lunge in further, not only throwing off his gauge of distance, but throwing out your own riposte, less delicate and more brutal in her target of his chest.

There's something you DO know about duelling - the instant you touch his blade with your own, he'll immediately judge the placement, speed and pressure of the touch, and with that, be able to form his own response and counter before his eyes even catch up to see it happening. That wouldn't be true for a beginner, but for some fancy expert like him, you get he's good enough.

Which means you need to make sure you don't touch his blade.

Even as he backsteps away from Cut-chan to circle you, his figure turned side-on to minimize his silhouette, breathing calm and steady, he's already flicking the rapier up at your face in a test of your reflexes and perception.

You don't fall for it or give away more than you have to; you dart back two steps as if startled while the blade slices through nothing, then back in as it finishes, leaving him bereft of momentum.

Cut-chan is too thick and heavy to go for anything finicky, unlike Fop's flexible rapier; even as you rush in, you extend your arm, turning a straight jab with Cut-chan's point into a sudden slash caused by your next side-stop to avoid the rapid fall of Fop's blade, her edge biting into and licking across his upper arm.

"First blood!" The announcer's cry brings cheers, boos and gasps from the audience, while Fop's eyes narrow under his mask.

The pair of you keep circling, watching each other's guard, while a trickle of blood stains his pale-blue silk shirt.

You have the measure of each other now.

You let yourself grin a little, kind of getting into this, but Fop's expression doesn't waver from cold determination. Is this really the same guy who was flouncing about earlier?

Before you can only consider any further, he moves.

The rapier is a thrusting weapon, and Fop proves it - stabstabstab, rapid-fire, towards your chest, your arm, your head, your legs - You draw one part of your back and he's already aiming somewhere else, momentum of one negated thrust instantly converted to slash it down or up or anywhere else that might be open.

You're forced to play catch-up, Ka-tan trying to desperately parry a series of increasingly precise blows, while you're forced on the retreat, Fop practically floating across the arena while the crowd cheers.

He strikes you twice, quick but shallow - a faint jab to the stomach that barely nicks your skin through your shirt, and a thrust to the shoulder that should have hit your neck if you'd been slower.

Second blood to Fop, though you both know last blood is the most important.

>3rd round, maybe the last? Roll 1d100, best of 3.

You need to end this now. That onslaught wore him out a little, but it wasn't great for you either, and if he tries another one, you're not sure you'll catch them all.

So you decide 'screw it', calm yourself down, and look into the future like the badass you are.

You instantly get a headache.

In most soars or fights, you see maybe a couple of dozen potential paths - they move their weapon like this or that, or they step back or forwards - here, too is ready to move In a hundred different ways, some almost identical (at least at first) depending on which way you move.

He thrusts out at this angle - except he also steps forwards for better range and THEN thrusts out - except he aims for your bicep instead - except he feints towards your thigh - except you parry, so he disengages - except he doesn't disengage, he ripostes - except -

You want to stab yourself in the head.

Gritting your teeth, you stay calm. You don't only need to see his options, you need the speed to react to them, and the tactics to lead down the path to where he's out of any options except for 'get hit'.

And you have to do it with a steadily growing headache.

Yay.

You take a quick breath, running your eyes-thoughts over the myriad paths and trying to push just a little further as you see his moves AFTER those first ones, which opens up... about five times as many paths, which doesn't help your head. Great.

In the fraction of a second since you activated Haki, Fop lunges.

Ka-tan strikes - slap the rapier and keep pushing, running down the length to lock hilts, step in to-no-no-no, disengage, shift to side, sway back, bend knee to let him think you're moving, wait for him to bring rapier up in response, straighten knee and twist to dodge, thrust Ka-tan into his side he tries to turn not-fast-enough stab-through-his-waistcoat-shirt-skin see-him-stumble slap-aside-the-flailing-rapier step-in hook-Ka-tan's-blade-through-the-ornate-handguard send-it-skittering-across-the-stage.

You drop the Observation, head pounding as you gasp for breath, Ka-tan tiredly moving to rest at the bewildered, unarmed man's throat.

"Yield?" You try to sound confident rather than like you want to collapse, but your word still reverberates around your skull and attempts to kick you in the brain.

Owwwwwwww.

Fop slowly lowers his gaze towards Ka-tan, the audience seemingly all holding their breath, then steels himself, giving a faint, grim nod. "I... yield."

You've never heard such an explosion of cheers and cries. Plus you nearly get yet another load of flowers on your head, though presumably these ones are for you.

"YOU'LL ALWAYS BE THE WINNER OF MY HEART, PRINCE STRONZO," some woman screams while sobbing. Actually, maybe not all the flowers are for you.

You drop Ka-tan from his throat, trying to regain your energy, while the announcer bounces onto the stage, beaming wide as Fop goes to pick up and check his blade.

You sneak a glance at Fop while bowing to the audience; he's lifting his rapier, frowning down the length of it as he holds it up and peers closely for any damage. Whether he's just oblivious to you and the audience or ignoring them, you have no idea, even as carefully runs a white cloth over the blade, wiping the blood off.

Huh.

When the announcer offers you the microphone, you immediately take it, along with your camera. "It was a good match," you announce, audience falling quiet to listen. "I don't think I've ever been pushed this hard!"

That gets you another round of cheers, and a potted hydrangea hurled at you. You think that's supposed to be a good thing.

"And Prince Stronzo?" The announcer spins to shove the microphone in the face of a solemn Fop, who takes a quick breath. "Wait a moment," he says, shoving a hand over the microphone so the audience can't hear, and then turns to scowl at you. "What... am I... supposed..." He clenches his fist, forcing the words out, "to... apologize... for?"

I'm pretty sure we were mad at him because he was some do-nothing noble riding on his family name and power. But he's actually a skilled duelist, and I'm pretty sure we can respect that.
>>
>>3395497
Being good with a sword is respectable, but he's still a holier-than-thou Noble prick. If we just have him apologise about calling our group a rabble, then we're basically saying that his only fault was not realizing that the Marines are higher up than commoners. It'd be Flashy saying that he should be treated with the respect of a noble, rather than that of an average person.

Being good in a duel doesn't make him justified. If all it takes to be a good person is being good at fighting, then that makes Sakazuki a fucking saint, doesn't it?

You finger-gun at him, which after a second he understands as approval, and continues. "Thank you all for your continued support! I am honored to be the prince of a country with such magnificent subjects. Ohohohoho~!"

You manage to ignore the worst of the screaming and cheers as the announcer directs the pair of you off-stage, going up himself to start announcing the tournament rules.

Fop straightened his clothing as he walks, though unable to do anything about the small holes and bloodstains.

>hi all my name's tashigi now

You happily trot off up to where the others sit, to enjoy your last few hours of life. Screw getting an explanation from Tashigi, it's time to watch people cut each other up for fun and profit!

"Hey guys!" You move across to the seat saved for you, as the audience shifts out of the way and applauds as you pass. It's pretty damn nice.

"Hello, Ensign Tashigi," Curly says dryly as you sit down. "A good match, mi-mi-mi."

"We knew you were gonna win, but it was still cool!" Mina nods triumphantly, holding her hand up for a high-five you gladly give her.

Yu nods in agreement, looking delighted. "Ah, it was wonderful! Although I don't quite understand why such mistakes were made with the names... and why didn't you tell the Great Me that your younger brother was competing! He's so handsome!"

You all pause to stare at her.

>hmmmm

Yeeeeeeah, you're not touching that one.

Subject change! "... So, uh, Fop's giving me a cool sword, aaaand also joining the Marines. Should I give you all a proper introduction to him?"

Curly raises an eyebrow, taken aback. "You talked him into becoming a Marine?"

"Eh, it was part of his losing. Apology, sword, Marines." You shrug. "Anyway, assuming he doesn't stay at the local base, and comes with us, we'll all be travelling together for a while, so..."

Yu looks thrilled. Worryingly so. "So he'll become a servant of the Great Me, hmm~?"

"I... guess he'll technically be a public servant, yes? But that's not really how it works..."

"Unimportant! The Great Me shall permit him to carry my carriage!"

"It's a stretcher," Mina says, with the bluntness only a ten year old can deal.

"That aside," Curly butts in, "is he joining as an officer? I can't imagine him dealing with the infantry well."

You start to answer, but the first pairs of duellists are going up on stage - three pairs at once, no-one you know, and the audience rings with yet more cheers as you all settle in to watch.

The first lot move quickly - two duels finish within a few moves, terrible match-ups between excellent swordsmen and casual ones, though the third drags on a little longer.

The next three pairs to come on stage include Sunglasses and Hat, thankfully not paired against each other.

>78 + 30 = 108 VERSUS 93 + 28 = 121
>67 + 30 = 97 VERSUS 60 + 28 = 88

Sunglasses... does pretty well. His opponent is good, but Sunglasses is just plain better, and while it isn't a one-sided thrashing, the winner is clear even before one of the judges calls a stop.

As for Hat... maybe it's the nerves of an audience, or just an off-day, but while he isn't BAD, he's just not good enough. After a reasonably close couple of minutes, his opponent moves in faster than he can react, pressing his blade against Hat's heart.

Well - at least they're honourable opponents who agents in it to splash blood around. You cheer with the other as the three pairs leave the arena, Sunglasses triumphant and Hat despondent.

Looking up at the VIP section, you can see who you presume to be his father sitting there, watching the duels with a charming smile, but empty seats beside him. Shouldn't Fop be up there now?

"I'm gonna go find Fop," you whisper to Curly, before getting up and moving to the aisle as quickly as you can.

Hmmm. If you know youŕ ~ooooooh honor~ types well, he's probably already packing or something, which means the private areas of the Palazzo.

You probably shouldn't give Smoboss another reason to murder you by breaking into there, so you quickly track down a palace guard instead.

"Hey, I wanted to speak to Prince Stronzo, and I can't seem to find him," you say, smiling in your usual 'please help me, I'm so useless' way. "Do you think you could tell me where he is?"

"The Prince is currently in a meeting with his mother and elder brother," the guard states, stony-faced. "You will have to wait, foreigner."

If I know my shonen tropes...

The fact he wasn't a complete bitch in combat shows some level of higher meaning to his character, if he was just a fop he woulda bitched out instantly,

Would that deeper meaning mean he was willing to join the marines? Maaaaybe.

But what I', 100% wiilling to say is that in a weird society like this, with masks and duels, the royal familly not being on top is definitly not good.

So at minimum he's being chewed out, at max he's being chewed out and hates us.

"Can I wait outside the room?"

The guard fixes you with an oddly disdainful look, but gives you directions - it's in one of the public areas, so you suspect the three met up and went to the most convenient private location after your match.

It takes a few minutes to find, although the walk is enjoyable enough; there's enough artwork and decoration along the massive corridors that there's never a blank wall or boring stretch of space.

There's no-one around here, which the matches going on, but you immediately recognise the bright red door the guard specified, and faint sounds from within. Talking?

"-mmoner, and you da-"
"-again will you-"

You take another quick glance around and listen - no-coming yet - and step back a couple of paces. If you try to activate Haki and someone opens.the door before you manage it, it sure would be awkward to have them walk out and into you.

Look, Haki is... not technically eavesdropping, right? So it's basically a step up from a moment ago!

Some might even call you a saint.

Hoping you won't get the brain-ouchies from earlier, you try to remember what Doctor Lighthouse's book said about detecting non-combat-related stuff, and give it a try.

(Okay, so I think this is the first time you've ever deliberately used Haki out of combat, and certainly for non-future-prediction type purposes. This is thus a different application so while you keep the same DC (truly I am a benevolent and merciful QM, ohohoho), you only get ONE of the following options at an autopass. If you choose a second or third option, it'll require rolling again at a higher DC.)

>You can sense how many people are in the room, where in the room, and can probably recognize the 'feeling' of them in the future
>You can comprehend the emotions in the room, but you can't tell at this distance whose is whose
>You can sort of sense a general physical 'overview' of the room, like bouncing sonar off it, which doesn't include fine details/movements or emotions.

(If people want two or three abilities, 2nd choice will be at an 85 DC. 3 will be at 99 DC. If you ask for two or more and then fail to reach the DC, those abilities will be locked off for a time. Any questions, please ask.)

So conflicted. People sense seems pretty important but considering the whole point of this is to determine what's happening with Fop, developing emotion sense makes more sense to me.

And with thisvite, 3-11-6. That's an autopass on general-people/emotions-sensing, but I don't feel it's enough votes to go for a second sub-ability.

From the room, you feel

FURY-FURY-FURY-shame-disgust-horror-disbelief-misery-pride-woundedpride-longing-smugsatisfaction-worry-determination-vindication

Your eyes open as you nearly reel backwards from the onslaught of... how many people's emotions? You couldn't figure out whose was whose, or how many, but there can't be too many people in there, right?

That said, the fact that so many of those emotions were negative doesn't really fill you with glee.

You gnaw at your lip. What the he'll are you meant to do with this? If old queeny is pissed off about her son joining the Marines... well, you can sort of see her point, you guess. It's a dangerous job even without a giant 'TAKE ME HOSTAGE, I'M VALUABLE' sign stuck on your head. Besides, signing up because you basically lost a bet proooobably doesn't sound like a great idea.

Maybe you should... let him off the hook? Or something? Shit, who knew recruiting royalty could be so politically problematic?

Then he raises a perfectly-plucked eyebrow at you, looking you up and down in obvious disdain. "You. You're Ensign Tashigi, aren't you?"

"That's me... your highness?" You proceed with Operation: Win Hearts And Minds, which consists of finger-guns. It's generally a good plan.

Sadly, this time, Older-Fop merely sniffs, still looking disdainful beneath his jewel-encrusted mask. "Your actions today were unbecoming of even a commoner. To force a Cagna to suggest they were incorrect - and in public, no less! I doubt one such as you has shame, but while we may not have the authority to whip a Marine, we can certainly discuss the matter with your Captain. >97, +1 Haki, DC down to 66

You calm your emotion, trying to grasp the emotion-sensing bullshit you managed a minute ago, and... find it easy to grasp, thankfully, emotions spilling into your senses like flavors to your mouth. Really angsty flavors, 'cause damn.

The other two are way out of your not-too-large range by now, because it's obviously Fop you feel; a thick, gloopy puddle of misery-shame-fury-regret-resignation-disbelief, all swirled together, one barely bobbing to the surface before being tugged under and replaced by the next.

"Trust me when I say birth parents are overrated," you say, fixing your gaze on some massive, gold candlestick that probably costs more than you'd make in six months. You still feel the shock as Fop realizes you're there, followed by a wash of hate-shame-pride-resignation-tiredness, before steeling itself to... determination-pride? Really?

Fop swiftly reaches up, tugging his wig mostly back into place, and turns to face you, head held high and body straightened. Beneath the powder and mask, it's hard to tell any details, but his lips look paler, the rouge on one cheek smudged, his eyes bored and careless.

"What's there to talk about, foreigner? Don't think I've forgotten our agreement. Your sword will be arriving shortly, and I'll be enlisting within the day. These things merely take a little time."

"Sounds like your family might have some problems with that," you observe. The wonderful thing about Observation Haki is that you have to be calm for it, which forces you to have some self-control. Much as you hate the idea of that, of course.

Fop scoffs, pursing his lips. "That's of no account. I'll simply serve under another name, and thus cast no reflection upon the Cagna family."

He feels like stubborness-determination-pride now, even if an undercurrent of misery still drifts about the now less-dense puddle of emotions. Man, Fop's a stubborn kind of asshole.

It's two years for infantry, four for officers, assuming Fop can pass the officer's exam. He's certainly good enough combat-wise, so the theory-work is the issue.

"You're okay with leaving things like this?" You fold your own arms, face as calm as your voice, as your emotions, keeping a tight rein on your Haki. "It's a four year minimum to serve. Even as a second prince, is that all right?"

Fop scowls, annoyance flaring from him, deep and purple. "Weren't you the one who made that stipulation? I already agreed, and I lost. Don't shame me further." That sounds like a command, and feels like a plea. "If you're trying to prevent me from coming aboard and finding out-" He pauses, giving a slight, embarrassed cough. "I'm already aware of the... crossdressing, and have no intentions of letting anyone know. Really, it's blatantly obvious, I don't know how anyone's fooled."

... I was going easy on it, but you know what? A rewrite just for you. And for the lulz.

>IT WAS A TRAP or was it??

Your Haki has stopped, which is odd, because you've never felt more emotionless in your life. In fact, you might not be capable of even thinking right now.

From somewhere distant, you hear your voice say, "..... How. Is it obvious. In retrospect."

"Well..." Fop seems a little reluctant as he quickly runs his gaze up and down you. "Even dressed as a man, and with your hair that length, you're still very... ah... that is to say..." he coughs again, and please, please, don't let him be flushing beneath that powder. "Your slimness would be the first, I suppose, and your legs and curve of your hips - even as a sailor unused to land, there's a certain sway there, yes?"

No, no, that's definitely sea-legs, you're sure --

"And ignoring your, ah, back -"

Wait, your back? What's girly about your back? Don't ignore it, explain!

"- your torso is quite excellently proportioned, especially around the waist and chest, even though you've bound it well -"

What, no you haven't, WHAT

"- then your shoulders, which clearly aren't broad enough to be a man's, nor your neck, both far too slim and delicate -"

You are going to dropkick Fop in the face.

"- as for your head, your hair is far too fine and soft-looking. Even if you were a prince, it would be far too much hassle to keep it that good at sea, but as a princess, of course you'd take the extra time and effort."

... You're torn between 'pRiNcEsS?!' and 'oh hey, that's kind of sexist against prince-hair'. The former wins out.

"Then there's your face! Such fine bone structure, those cheekbones - your lips! Your eyelashes! That flawless, soft-looking skin! The sheer absence of any stubble!"

.... How are you a stubble expert?! You think Tashigi's pen stubble is real!!

"Ah, and then there's your voice, and the way you held your fan as you laughed in the market..." Fop shakes his head, frustration ringing through. "I don't know how I missed it then. Such delicate, graceful movements can only be the domain of a young lady. I understand that Renaisse is... somewhat more strict regarding women fighting than many other countries, so I can see your reasons. But rest assured, my parents are less than eager to announce your disguise, so it remains safe! Nor have I mentioned your true status of royalty to them."

Ah, so BPQM is gonna push for FopxFlashman too obviously
>>
Oh god, when he meets Sanji he's going to be convinced that the reason the cheapshot didn't work was because we are actually a girl. Not that we were wearing a cup

THE ONLY ROMANCE IN THIS QUEST IS THE ROMANCE OF ADVENTURE

... although admittedly I'm kind of fucking that up if I set up Tashigi and Yu. Hm. Oops?

Also SmokerxJustice OTP
>>
>>3399415
Pssht.

Flashman will soon be the single dad of two girls, a boy, two little devils and a genderless chuunibyou/actual nitty gritty detective.

And maybe one more, if he takes a shine to the new sword.

All while chasing pirates.

He wont be able to date till thirty, at least.

>Fop meets Sanji
>Convinces Sanji that his marine nemesis is A) a girl + B) a princess

Can't wait for Sanji's mental breakdown over the fact that he desperately wants to kick a ~LADY~ in the teeth

Or the fact that he straight up kicked a girl in the crotch kek
>>
>>3399386
Oh shit, Sanji kicked our crotch and it didn't faze us.
>>

You will be in for quite a surprise later.
See you on-board.
>>
>no u

"... Yeah, well," you say, once you regain your voice, control of your body, and your will to live, in that order, "you're wearing make-up and a wig."

Fop apparently takes humor in that, face lightening as he throws his head back in a laugh. "Of course I wear the standard adornments of Renaisse nobles, but even this powder couldn't mimic the delicacy of a real woman's skin! No, despite your lack of make-up, your womanliness shines through, Ensign Tashigi. It was only your clothes, sword and hairstyle that had me so deceived."

You stare at him. "I cannot possibly describe how not the point that was." And what the hell did he mean about your back, earlier, huh?!

"Regardless!" Fop straightens, steel in his spine and dedication shining through. "I must continue my preparations! No doubt I'll see you aboard the, ah, White Mist tonight. Was there anything else, before I take my leave?"

>>Please don't tell Smoboss about this conversation
>>
>>3399498
I was actually planning on having this conversation in front of Smoboss at a post-tournament after-party, where you wouldn't be able to explain the situation for fear of outing Tashigi, but I thought it would be too cruel.

... As it turns out, you're all willing to let him keep believing anyway. At least you missed out on Smoboss nearly laughing himself to death!
>>
>>3399510
>Implying Smoboss won't find out anyway after talking to his newest recruit and hearing him mention 'that blonde swordswoman Tashigi who bested me'
>He doesn't even give us punishment, as he realizes we're suffering enough with this assumption and he's laughing too hard to hold anything against us
>>
>>3399510
I kinda expect Fop's parents to either allude to it or something like that, and Smoboss try his hardest not to laugh during the conversation
>>
>>3399519
It's a tough life, being a beautiful runaway princess...

Any more votes, people, or should I assume most everyone has said everything they want to?
>>
>>3399496
>Hey, if you ever want to talk to someone about things (like your family)...
>>
>all done

"Yeeeeeah, I think we're done here," you mutter, because what the hell can you say to all that? Just... what?

Fop nods, looking weirdly cheerful now he's apparently privy to your Shocking Secret, and leaves with a new bounce.to his step, apparently truly determined to set forth on a new life of stabbing pirates in the face.

You... suppose that you technically succeeded in your goal. Yippee.

>Head back to the others.
>Go find Smoboss and let him know Fop's signing up. You've already lost the will to live, it doesn't matter if he kills you.
>Head back to the ship. You need to just... curl up in bed, or see if Klaus is in a huggy mood, or stab something. A lot.

Lets see if actual Tashigi at least won her sword. She SO owes us for this.
Also curious how far Sunglasses managed to get.

You make your way back to the arena. How long has it been? Between finding a guard, getting to the room, eave- uh, casually standing around, getting your masculinity destroyed, and the slow trudge back, it must have been an hour before you approach your destination.

You step in to wild cheering, the audience standing, applauding, and once more throwing dangerously arranged plantlife, as you wander over to an aisle to state down at the show.

Well. Apparently you came just in time to see Ta- HARRY, triumphant.

She (or he) stands in the centre of the arena, a wide grin on her face despite the clear exhaustion, sword-arm held high by the announcer.

"LADIES AND GENTLEMEN," he bellows, voice echoing around the open air, "HERE HE IS - THE WINNER OF THIS YEAR'S TOURNAMENT, ENSIGN HARRY FLASHMAN!"

Yeeeeep - on cue, the crowd explodes into even louder cheers. You're practically deafened, even though you're cheering as well, mood buoyed by your colle- no, little brother's victory.

"AS FOR HIS PRIZE! WE PRESENT THE-"

Which is when a panting guard slams through one of the doors leading from broken up to the arena, yelling distress, "THE SWORD! THEY STOLE IT!"

Everyone freezes.

All eyes turn to the guard.

The announcer, microphone still at his mouth, says a very impolite word that has several ladies gasping and fluttering their faces with fans.

As for you, you quickly take in the important sights. Tashigi, hurtling offstage and running for the door the guard came through - Smoboss, already vanishing over and outside the arena as a massive cloud of smoke, no doubt in case they get outside - the others still seated but worried, Sunglasses and Hat with them but standing, moving to assist.

You

>head down to the arena and follow Tashigi into the lower levels of the Palazzo!
>leave the Palazzo, catch them outside!
>question the guard, though it'll mean a delay.

OP, you going to be okay running much longer? It's well past two in the morning.

Let's put our emotion reading skills to good use. The fact that they were able to do this without raising any alarms up until this point screams 'inside job' to me.

Get some clues. Even if we fall behind, we happen to have a certain gun-shaped ace up our sleeve.

It's 2.30AM and I'm going to sleeeeeeeep~

Thanks for playing, all, hope Pretty Princess Flashman wasn't too traumatizing.

Also I can't believe how much Fop's grown on me since his original appearance. Like a fungus with a beauty mark.

Sis and Smoker have the exits covered anyway - if they slip past both of them then we'll really will need more info to track them down

Shhh anon, this is a fucking blue board

Question guard wins out, going to make new thread later. Not that the theft even matters, because Tashigi is powered by the rage of a furious sword-freak, and and could currently slaughter a Yonkou by herself. Poor thieves, hope Smoboss catches them first.

Officially speaking, Ensign Flashman won this tournament. I’m sure that will cause absolutely no problems later down the lines, at all.
