General rules:

There is a 10 minute voting period after each post. Non-contradictory votes will be combined as best as possible.
Write-ins for all votes are always welcome and encouraged. They may not all make it into the post or be altered to fit in, but I'll do my best to at least try to address the spirit of the write-in.

Very important or contentious votes may be redone in a stricter voting system as circumstances warrant.

Combat mechanics involve three rolls of 1d100, taking the best, and using the base accuracy and crit ranges of the the PTU system, roughly, but the 'turn order' will be more like the anime, where sometimes you can do a few moves in a row or be hit by a combo of moves yourself, all depending on circumstances. Stronger moves tend to take more time and have more cooldown than weaker moves and also may leave you open to an interrupt, so beware of that timing. Speed is more important for closing ground, intercepting, and other things and doesn't necessarily mean going first.

Pokemon and trainers are unique, and may have certain specializations, skills, or other things that the video-game mechanics might not allow. Some examples: That kung fu Bellsprout in the anime, that crystal Onix, or a Roggenrolla that can fly. Herb's perception skills, pokemon knowledge, context clues in general, and other things will hopefully come into play to avoid completely unfair, unforeseeable bullshit, but expect more bullshit from more advanced trainers.

Call me out on a mistake and receive a suggestive picture, mostly likely a butt.

Pokemon:
Gobble (Munchlax)
Mace (Roggenrola)
Belladonna (Roserade)
Dice (Feraligatr)
Sorbet (Vulpix)
Ghost Pepper (Rotom)

“Cubone, come on.” You very slowly reach out and touch the end of the club, lowering it slightly. “She’s just talking. Nobody is going to do anything you don’t want.”

Cubone looks a little assured, and she does lower the club a bit more, but she still keeps both hands on it, ready to act just in case. You also notice that Ghost Pepper is approaching and listening to the conversation. Your words seem to have drawn it’s attention.

Cubone cocks it’s head. It seems to want to know more.

You nudge Hana. “Go on.”

She fidgets nervously in your lap. You get the sense that she’s feeling extra vulnerable and uncertain since she’s relying on you to be her mobility. You hold her steady.

“Cubone. I don’t want to do anything you don’t want. I just thought that since we seem to understand each other, at least on a certain level, that maybe we’d make a good team. If you ever want to leave I’m alright with that.”

Cubone seems intrigued. It cocks it’s head again. It’s not sold on the idea, but willing to listen.

You encourage her with another nudge. “You can listen to Hana, Cubone.”

Cubone’s grip on her club remains, but it seems more out of habit than desire.

“I can’t replace your family. Nothing can.” She pauses. For quite a while, too. She seems lost in thought. “But I can be something else. Reliable. A pillar you can lean on. Not a replacement for what you could have had, but someone who’ll help you while you learn to stand on your own, so that when you find someone else to turn into family you’ll know you’re choosing it instead of clinging to the first thing that makes you feel like you belong.”

Cubone really lets those words sink in. As she thinks, Hana cuddles in deeper onto your lap.

Cubone looks around. She’s a bit worried about something. Her eyes seem to linger on Dice especially, but she looks at all the pokemon and people around the camp behind you. Cubone also looks at you, as if she expects you'll say something. You don't know if she means you'll say something about Dice, or about wanting to train her yourself, or something else.

Cubone looks really ready to listen, but Hana isn’t sure about what else to say.

You decide to step in a little, and add your own thoughts. “Having people you can trust, and lean on, and be taxing to in your weak moments, that’s, well, something that everyone needs.” You think not just of your brother depending on you, but all the times you relied on others, like your grandpa. “It’s important to be able to have someone, or more than one someone, like that in your life.”

“Herb always knows how to say it.” Hana adds in, giving you a soft wiggle. “I know it’s scary to trust someone else as your trainer. We can ease into it, or we can just not do it. Either way, I want to stay friends.”

Cubone nods.

“Does that mean you want me to be your trainer?”

It shakes its head.

“You’re not sure yet, but you want to train with me?”

Cubone nods.

“Sounds good, Cubone.” hana says, reaching out. Cubone takes one hand off it’s weapon to shake Hana’s fleshy hand.

“The only expectation I have of you is the same I had a minute ago.” Hana assures Cubone. “Just that we’ll be able to talk anything out.”

Cubone’s weapon drops to the ground with a soft, almost inaudible thud. It looks out to the stars.

You leave them to their bonding after a long moment of silence. Well, not that long, but it felt that way. “Let me know if you need help back.” You assure Hana.

She smiles. You know she’ll be fine, even if your urge to stay and help still tugs at you.

You leave them both to bond. You want to stay and be a part of if, but you know that sometimes you just have to let others have their moments, and stories, and special things that aren’t about yourself.

You feel spiritually refreshed despite leaving that scene, and return to your tent. It seems like most of the party as gone to bed. You’re in for a surprise when you see Keira sitting over Laki.

“Herb!” Keira jumps, wrapping her spindly limbs around your body. She slides down. For half a second you’re worried about Laki’s reaction. But as she turns over from her prone position to look at you, she smiles.

“Hey Soft Hands. Keira was just practicing some stuff.”

Keira nods. “Fertility aid rituals.”

You finally see all the little candles, incense, small gatherings of flowers and plant offerings, and other items around the tent.

So, guys, re:pregnancy;

There’s a thing you can do in Loanan culture, I forget if it’s festival-specific, that’s like getting engaged to get engaged.

I think it’d be fair for Herb to tell Laki that, if she’s not pregnant now, that he’d like to be married first before having a kid. It’s something that’ll make his family happy and they can still move fast, just in an order he’s more comfortable with. It’d push the kid, like, 9-12 months farther down the line, not the many years a lot of people wait to have a kid.

“Neat!” You announce as you settle into the tent. “I told Val I’d give her and her Pokémon massages, why don’t I bring her over here and you can tell me about the rituals?”

“Yeah? Alright Soft Hands. Bring her in.”

You go find Valerie, who is having a chat with Abigail as they show off each other’s pokemon moves. Abigail seems embarrassed when you approach. You think her and Conqueror were showing off a little.

Valerie seems eager to come enjoy a massage. You extend the offer to Abigail too, but she seems a bit distracted and embarrassed. She calls you a rude but endearing name and sets you on your way.

“Alright. Double blonde time.” Laki says on your arrival.

“Laki!” Valerie half scolds, half looks a little concerned about.

“Come on Soft Hands. Me last.” Laki says. “Do Valerie and her Pokemon first.”

Well, you don’t want to rock the boat. You start working on Herdier as Valerie releases it into your now cramped tent, and watch as Keira does a quick blessing ritual onto Laki’s belly.

“I hope that’s right.” Keira says. “It’s so weird. I’m used to being intimately familiar with everything I do. Now I’m like a helpless babe. Everything is so new and strange.”

We told her we would be open for that night, and that we were in it for the long haul relationship wise. and shes stolen the march and is being a bit overly aggressive about it. That said we know about this part of her psyche the whole putababyinmenow persona. So I think we should mention it and tell her to put strong laki in control a little more and let her know we arn't running away.

You finish up with Valerie’s very stressed pokemon. They all seemed to really need a little pampering. You guess it’s not just trainers that have worries about these things.

“Oh. Omigosh Herb.” Valerie says as you work on her knots. “You’re amazing at this.”

Laki takes your arm. “Alright. My turn.” She seems not jealous, but eager. She puts your hand on her shoulder as Valerie begins to exit the tent.

“Thanks, Herb. I should get to sleep. It’s a big day tomorrow. And, um, thanks, everyone. Even though we just hung out, I really needed this. I feel more...centered.”

“You can stay.” Laki offers.

Valerie looks happy for the invitation, but declines. “I think you want your privacy.” She says knowingly as she leaves.

“Awww, I guess that means it’s time for sleep.” Keira yawns. “Alright. Tomorrow is another day.”

Keira just sort of curls up and goes to sleep at the foot of the sleeping bag you share with Laki. You give Laki a quick but complete massage, relaxing with and somehow not getting distracted by all the ways her body responds to her touch.

Laki quickly turns you into the small spoon, wrapping you in comfort and warm safety, as you drift off to sleep.

You dream of...

You have no focused subject of your dream. There’s a lot going on. Chaos and disorder are all over your mind. At least, at first. Soon, things come into focus. Your mind becomes centered on one thing; your pokemon.

You see an image of a small, unevolved Gobble. He’s holding something nebulous, but heavy. What he’s lifting doesn’t matter. What matters is that he isn’t able to keep it lifted. He looks to you, offering a bittersweet smile, before being crushed by the weight. Or at least, it seems like he might have been. It’s unclear. Your vision is blocked before it happens.

You want to help. You want to tear away the fog and lift with him. Empower him. Feed him. Do something. But your energies and attention are limited. Your other pokemon will need you. Your friends and lovers will need you. You’ll need yourself.

>Trust he can handle it. Save your energy.

“You have this, Gobble.” You say, offering offering but morale support as the fog closes in. Gobble pushes and strains against the unseen weight as your vision of him fades. If he overcomes his challenge or not, you’ll never know. All you can do is believe you’ve given him what he needs to be prepared.

There’s Mace. Good old dependable Mace. But something’s not quite right. The excess energy from not evolving that he burns off seems gone. Faded. What remains is an empty, worn out husk. A rock without life remaining. Aged, empty. Spent. A creaking, worn out old man inside of a rock barely offers you a glance.

”Fight Mace! Do not go gentle into that good night!” You shout into your dream. There’s no physical feedback in your dream, but that just means you have to try harder to be satisfied with your effort. You storm forward and give him energy. He’s your pokemon. He’s your friend. You won’t just let him go and accept what happens. You’ll fight with him. And you’ll keep him strong! Your pour energy unto him with one arm and flip fried noodles with another. By the time you’re feeding him food instead of what’s in your spirit, he’s stirring, moving. He’s not a young pup, but he’s alive. He’s willing to see and experience more new things.

But you’re drained. Exhausted.

“Hey.” You feel yourself wake up suddenly. You weren't done. You had more to see and do. But the pushing of Laki on your arm shunts you out of your unconsciousness. “Soft Hands. Wake up.”

“What is it?” You squint. Gobble stirs by your head, and Mace is sleeping soundly near the tent entrance.

“Well, I wanted to talk before everyone wakes up.” She says.

“Sure, about what?”

“I’m just...You know I love you, right?”

The words make your heart race, even now. You know there will come a day when they don’t, even if they’re still comforting, but until then, you embrace the shot of alert excitedness from hearing that. You nod.

“Good. Because I know your sister doesn’t really like me. And I get that. If I were in her position and I saw some girl trying to make babies with my little brother I’d...anyway, I get it. But that’s not what I wanted to talk about. I want you to know that if you want help dealing with Max, I’m in.”

“What do you mean?” You whisper.

“Whatever you want.” She says back. “We can set him up somehow, or I can just emasculate him, or intimidate him into leaving her alone. I know it’s not stuff you’d jump to, but...I saw how upset you looked.”

“I appreciate the offer.” You say. “But-”

“But it’s not right.” She tries to finish your sentence.

“But it’s too far, and I honestly think he’s capable of making a fool out of himself without our help. Besides, I already threatened to break his legs.”

Her eyes take yours in for a moment. She looks impressed. “Well alright Soft Hands.”

“And my sister is smart. She’ll say something to me or our parents if she has any problems. I might not like him, but she does.” You leave out ‘for some reason’.

“Well, the offer is always open.” She says. “I know how you see things, Soft Hands, but as far as I’m concerned, I’m not about ‘right or wrong’. I’m about being on your team. So if anything comes up that you’re not comfortable with, come to me.”

The morning is still and quiet. Nobody else is awake, yet.

“Hey.” You whisper to Laki as you both keep close under the warm blanket against the chilly cold morning air. “Can we talk?”

“Just for the future, you never just ask your girlfriend if you can talk without giving context first.” She says, sounding a little like Hana. “What’s up, Soft Hands?”

“Well, I wanted to see how you felt about Keira...you know.”

Her face is inexpressive. Or maybe just hard to see in the early morning light. “She’s been great. I really think this is her calling.” Laki’s hand takes yours as she aggressively pulls you in to be spooned again. Her breath against the back of your neck and soft, but firm, body against your back make you feel safe but also a little helpless. “But you’re not asking about that, are you? You want to know if we’re going to give her more hands-on help about experiencing what it’s like.”

You nod.

“Let me ask you this, Soft Hands. Be honest. I won’t get mad. If you were...give her your pride, what would be your motivation?”

It’s not about adding her to a harem (and I don’t want to now that we’ve chosen others), it’s about doing what will be best/most comfortable for her and what will make her the most happy. It’s not going to be a great start to her future career if she starts out with rejection and having to settle. It’s weird and contradictory, but I see this as a more spiritual/platonic relationship (with some sex for ritualistic purposes) as opposed to the more conventional partnership with Hana/Laki. Basically, I want to do this, but I don’t want to collect girls.
>>
>>3391066
>Keira’s your friend and asked for your help
>You genuinely want to make her and everyone else happy and don’t really care about the way you accomplish that.
>>
>>3391585
It'd be nice if she and her kid still came over to Herb's place for dinner all the time down the line, though. Not full harem member maybe though personally that's still my ideal case but still family.
>>
>>3392832
Sure, it would be a little weird and out of character to cut ties, especially considering their friendship. I only meant that Kiera and Kiera-spawn wouldn’t be living with/financially supported by Herb. Kiera is going to end up as a temple leader and the kid would likely be supported through those means. There just doesn’t seem to be a downside for anyone involved here.
>>
>>3391066
>She’s really cute
>You genuinely want to make her and everyone else happy and don’t really care about the way you accomplish that.
>Keira’s your friend and asked for your help

The first reason is why we would be lying if we said we hadn't idly thought about it at least once. The other two are why we're actually considering it instead of brushing it off as just a random fantasy from our lower head.
>>
>>3392832
I can see Keira becoming a full harem member, but only if from the get-go she’s dating Hana and Laki as well as Herb. The, ah, completeness of the Herb/Hana/Laki triangle is what has allowed it to work as well as it has, and I think if the relationship is going to become bigger, messier, and more complicated, that quality will need to extend fully into the new form it may take. It’s a long shot, really. I’d expect it to be an occurrence in the epilogue, really.
>>
>>3394707
Yeah, it might be epilogue material. Didn't Keira once mention that only senior fertility priestesses were permitted to marry, because they had demonstrated that they can balance a relationship and their duties? A formal relationship with her wouldn't be permitted at this point anyway.

[This is amazing. Thank you! I can't express enough how great this is. I will definitely produce a move list for other characters this week. It's something I've wanted to make for awhile.]

“She’s my friend, and she asked me to help.” You whisper, almost confused that that has to be said. Maybe she’s asking about something else. “But, if you’re asking if I think she’s cute, then the answer is yes.”

Laki blinks. “Well, your honesty is part of why I made you my man.” But her tone isn’t angry, or even disappointed. “She is cute. And I’ve had a bit of a blocker in my head about being able to define someone in the clergy like her as that.” She pauses for another moment before seeming to change elements for whatever dish is in her head. “Hearing you say it is actually nice. I’m not threatened like I thought I’d be, but it’s because you’re not hiding anything. And...” she smirks, “I’ve seen how much I make you want to ravage and breed me.”

Oh dear. She starts running her hands on your body, but the start of movement just outside the tent makes her hesitate for a moment and cools off.

“Soft Hands, I know you’d want to help her even if she wasn’t your friend.” You nod. You want to say more to emphasize that point because she gets it, but she’s still talking. And the nod is enough to let her know she’s reading your mind. “But I think this is one of those ways of helping that requires friendship, or something like it. I want to help too. But...I don’t have the same connection with her as you do. Yeah, we get along great, and yeah, we had a fun time pranking you when we first met. But you and her...well, you have a friendship I might have gotten a little jealous of. Before. Not now. Shut up. Don’t worry about it.” You didn’t say anything, but okay. “What I’m saying is that her and I get along great, but I don’t feel like we’re very close. I want to be closer to her so she can feel more at ease with me helping, but I don’t know how.”

You risk putting your head up to look in the tent. Keira is still sound asleep near yours and Laki’s feet. “I think she trusts you and feels closer to you than you think.”

Laki mimics your action and looks at Keira too, before returning back to having her head half-covered by the blanket. “Maybe, but not like you. I want to know what we can do to become closer. How to let her know I’m safe for her to trust. What should I do?”

“You should ask her, not me.” You offer simply.

Laki looks annoyed at first. After a moment of thinking it over though, her face shows her thoughts and she agrees with that answer. “I hate that it sounds so simple and makes so much sense when you say it like that. Alright. I will.”

Keira starts to stir awake.

“We’ll talk with her and Hana later.” Laki tells you quickly.

The little camp that you have starts coming to life a short time later, buzzing with activity. You find Hana and Cubone having had spent the night outside, cuddled up.

“Hey, where’s Ghost Pepper?” You ask the still half-asleep Hana after it just occurs to you that you haven't seen the little guy this morning yet.

Hana’s hand rises up. She wakes up very quickly after realizing that wasn’t done under her own power. You both enjoy a laugh as the mischievous pokemon zooms away to see what Valerie is up to.

Actually, what is she up to? She’s got a small laptop setup and is watching something. She slams it shut when you approach.

“Hey, Herb. Just thinking about my performance today.”

“Nervous?”

“A lot less than I was. Thanks.” She says. But she does look a bit more stressed when her stomach growls in hunger.

You suppose that’s your queue. You and Gobble get to cooking right away. He seems eager this morning. You feel pretty well rested yourself. With that energy and motivation, you’re both able to cook up a nice breakfast quickly, giving you some spare time with your cooking gear before you should pack it up.

“Hey Belladonna.” You call your cute little Roserade over. Huh. She’s not that little these days, is she?

She runs over with a grace that’s so unlike the stubby-legged budew that she used to be. But the look in her eyes when she glances up at you is still the same.

“Hey, so I had an idea. Involving what they call Roserade tea.”

She perks up. Without even waiting, she unleashes a storm of leaves into a nearby rock. For half a second out of the corner of your eye you thought that one in the path of green destruction was Mace, but he’s safely way over on the other side of the camp.

“Woah! Alright! You can stop n-”

Belladonna continues the Petal Dance, making a storm of destruction in that general area. You draw a few heads from the camp but everyone loses interest on seeing it’s just you and your pokemon using a move. After a few more seconds, Belladonna spins and flops over, adorably confused. You catch her before she hits the ground.

“Thanks, Belladonna. But wait next time, alright?”

She tries to give an okay sign, but can’t quite seem to focus her eyes as they spin and twirl. You gently set her down to rest it off.

You and Gobble gather a nice amount of leafs, and try to figure out the next step.

“Is it just a matter of adding boiled water?” You ask aloud, trying to think.

As you work on it and ponder, Hana approaches, eating a banana from Keira’s Tropius. “Making tea?”

“Hopefully.” You pat Belladonna as she recovers and you try to think. “How’d things go with Cubone?”

“Great! I think we’ll become good friends. I’m really glad we met her.”

Gobble and Belladonna look to Dice, then to Hana again. They both look a little uneasy about that. Belladonna shifts a bit closer to the eggs you have laid out by your other ingredients.

“Now guys, Cubone’s been with us for awhile and hasn’t caused any problems.” You remind them. It’s simple, direct, and they seem to take it in pretty effectively. At least, they seem to react for the time being. You half expect Belladonna to harumph, and she does just a little, but she also seems to give it some genuine thought, too.

You take a sip of the tea after a lot of blowing on it. Your constant and consistent practice with cooking, and Belladonna’s great health, seems to have paid off. The tea is refreshing.

“Ah.” You relax. After a few more taste tests and trying to make sure there’s no strange after tastes, you offer some to Hana. She then invites the others over.

“Oh, Herb, Bella, this is heavenly.” Valerie says.

“Yeah. Gotta say, I usually think tea is pretty lame but this isn’t bad. Oh yeah, got any more of stuff from before?” Abigail asks. You give her the leftovers, which she scarfs down greedily.

“Before I forget, Herb, I want to do something to say thanks. Sometimes I get some items I don’t have any use for in the contest from sponsors or extra props or things like that. Is there anything you’d like me to keep an eye out for?”

Not necessarily something she'd use for a contest, but just something nice in general, you know?
>>
“Well, maybe we could find something for Abigail.” You muse.

“That’s sweet.” Valerie says. “I wanted to offer her something that doesn’t fit me anymore, but I don’t know how she’d react. Her clothes are so worn out but she seems a bit sensitive about...you know, we have different household circumstances.”

“Hmm, I didn’t think about that. We could take her shop-”

“Shopping” Valerie almost explodes. “Okay, but if I see anything she’ll like, I’ll grab it anyway and figure out how to give it to her later.”

“I hate to be greedy, but can you also keep an eye out for a cape for Mace, and maybe something cute for Sorbet?”

Instead of being overwhelmed by your request, she starts to bounce in her spot. “Omigosh yes! Oh, he’d look so dashing! Oh, what material would blow well in the wind for him? And Sorbet! A little bow, or...or...”

“What are you guys whispering about?” Abigail asks quizzically.

“Fashion!” Abigail squeals. She downs her tea and shoots up. “Alright! This is the energy I wanted! This is what we need for the contest. Come on, let’s go!” She starts gathering her pokemon, waiting for nobody.

You and everyone quickly gather things up and go with her down to the festival grounds. Today’s theme is on older children. People just entering puberty, around your brother’s age. The games and activities seem more focused on that today too, but there’s still plenty for everyone.

“Thanks again.” Valerie says before trying to run off. “I have to get ready, but watch my contest tonight, okay?”

“You got it.” Laki says.

“Good luck!” Hana offers.

“Lick some butt!” Keira tries to use a mainlander expression.

“Piss off those prissies.” Abigail says with something that almost sounds like warmth, despite the words.

With that, Valerie is gone, and everyone else is looking around the festival wondering what to do.

“Uh, Keira, it’s ‘kick’.”

“What is?”

“You ‘kick’ butt.” You elaborate.

“That doesn’t sound very fun.” She seems confused.

“Licking butts does?” Abigail asks.

Hana turns her head so fast that you almost worry something bugged out.

“What? Oh!” Keira giggles. “I suppose that does imply that, doesn’t it? That’s hilarious. You know, you’re really funny, Abigail.”

Abigail seems a bit taken aback by the compliment. She regains her composure. “I guess that’s better than funny looking.”

Keira loses it.

You decide to try out an amateur contest battle while they’re going on. It seems like they’re a focus of today before the main contest show starts. There’s a bunch of people just having fun with unorganized exhibition matches, and there’s also some small tournaments with prizes going on too.

“I think I’ll join that little tournament.” You say, pointing to the sign up area. It seems more like an amatuer thing than the more serious, larger tournament that’s also accepting new applicants. The prizes aren’t nearly as huge, but it seems more focused on fun and won’t take up your whole day.

“That works for me.” Laki says. “I was hoping Keira and I could do our own thing for a bit. But good luck!”

Abigail raises an eyebrow. She’s not asking any questions but seems to think something is up.

You look among your pokemon to see how eager everyone is. Dice doesn’t seem too interested, but he’s not against the idea either. He might come around if he sees the others having fun. Belladonna is very eager, jumping in spot and probably ready to rebel if she isn’t chosen at least once. Sorbet seems a bit shy, but as she watches two trainers have a little exhibition match focusing on looking good over raw damage, seems at least intrigued. Gobble looks like he can show off, and quickly shows some jabs. Mace doesn’t look excited at all, but you know he’d be willing to try his best if you asked. Ghost Pepper seems excited to try, although there’s some hesitation in general to be under pressure.

“Oh! A mainlander contestant! Welcome aboard!” The friendly person at the register desk says as you put your name to paper. His Yungoos makes a cute noise and offers you a paper. “Please review these rules and we’ll get you started with your first match. Good luck!’

You check over the rules. They seem simple enough. You have one pokemon per match and can’t switch, except if you and the other trainer want to do a double battler instead. You’re both judged based on the style and combinations of the moves instead of focusing on knocking the other side out, but knockouts do count as a win. The other side loses points as you pull off judge-pleasing attacks, and whoever has the most points when the short time is up wins. Or you can win by taking out all of your opponents points.

Before you know it, you’re being summoned to get ready for your first match. The middle aged woman waves at you and wishes you luck, and you do the same. She seems friendly!

You look over which pokemon you want to choose. Belladonna is the most eager, but she also seems to be in a really competitive mood that might be a bit aggressive for your opponent.

“Alright, you’ll go up first, alright Ghost Pepper?”

Belladonna looks upset, but she keeps herself from doing anything. Yet. Ghost Pepper zooms haphazardly towards you in that strange zig-zag way of his. Or hers.

“Remember, Ghost, this is a contest battle. It’s all about style.”

Ghost looks quizzically at you, and a little uncertain. He bursts into bright lights even under the bright and heavy sunlight of the day. He’s ready to prove himself.

The middle aged, harmless old lady produces a cute little Mudkip. She gives it a little pep talk.

“Got any good ideas?” You ask the buzzing, electric ghost. “I can try to work them in.”

Ghost Pepper buzzes in a circle. Not from excitement, but from feeling pressure and needing to just do something. Even though you haven’t known Ghost for as long, it’s apparent in how it acts.

“Hey. It’s alright. I’m just asking because I want you to be able to share if you have any ideas.”

Ghost calms a bit, and thinks. He seems to throw the first thing that comes to mind out, flies through a trash can as if it weren’t there.

“Hey, that’s a good idea! We can take advantage of your ability to go through stuff.” You compliment. “Good thinking, now let’s battle!”

You send out Ghost, and the other trainer has her Mudkup run out. It’s a fairly small area, and there’s not a lot of fanfare, but the judges are paying close attention and have an official looking timer and two small screens that represent your points.

“And....begin!”

“Sorry, kiddo. This tournament is mine! Mudkip! Use Mud Slap!”

Mudkip, wearing a pretty little bonnet, prepares to attack.

“Fly up and use Confuse Ray!”

Ghost buzzes in a zigzag pattern upwards. The Mudslap manages to catch him as he goes upwards, but it’s not a clean hit, and he looks neat punching through the mud in a sudden burst of speed. His purple ball of confusion flies smoothly and gracefully through the air in an odd but captivating way. It lands right on target.

But instead of the quick advantage you were hoping to secure, the Mudkip is retrieving something from it’s bonnet. A berry! The judges are waiting to see how this turns out before taking points

A few notes for as you put together the moves/abilities, if you're open:

Meowth evolved.

Togepi knows Wish and Double-Edge.

I'd suggest using Serebii.net instead of bulbapedia to get the most complete sense of what moves a pokemon might know, since it includes a list of moves that can be known by transferring over from a previous generation.

I don't know if you plan on filling in more natures or just sort of nixing that. This go 'round has been really great about characterizing the pokemon as individuals, so natures aren't as necessary, though they do still give an indication about stats.

And if you're taking suggestions on abilities, ignoring the pokemon I think I remember having confirmed abilities, or that I don't have much opinion on:
Wailord: Pressure
Persian: Technician
Togepi: Hustle
Tirtouga: Swift Swim
Cutiefly: Honey Gather
Tropius: Harvest
Ninjask: Speed Boost
Vivillion: Shield Dust

And I haven't really given any thought to Jane, Polu, or Valerie's Pokémon since they're not usually around for us to train our pokemon alongside, and I can't even be certain what their teams are, though I'm sure I could think of cool builds.

“Ghost Pepper! Use Trick to steal that berry! Quick!.”

Ghost zigs, then zags, then zigs and zags! Then instead of zigging again, he zags a second time in a row! It’s the perfect move to steal that berry right before Mudkip chomps down on it.

Ghost snickers mischievously. It’s not a dominant, condescending laugh like what Belladonna gets. It’s a fun, restrained giggle with an electric energy. He looks like a kid that got away with their first big prank.

The judges go wild at the turnabout, but but Mudkip is already giving chase to Ghost and will likely be able to catch up to him right away. It seems able to keep it’s confusion at bay.

“Ghost! Duck!”

Ghost goes up for half an inch, then dips down under the ground itself. He’s gone in an instant. And Mudkup is stuck looking around for its target. The little Water pokemon looks left and right, confused as to where it’s opponent will come from.

“Astonish!” You command!

Nothing happens right away. You and the judges and the opposing trainer watch closely.

A mad cackling comes from the overhanging light post above! You just now notice that it turned on in the bright daylight. Ghost drops from inside the lamp post down just an inch above Mudkip, who jumps in a scare.

Mudkip’s trainer though, still gets a command through. “Water Gun!”

The water gun shoots Ghost back up, knocking him into the lamp post he came from.

The judges take some of your style points away from that attack. But looking at your opponent’s points, you’re a pixel away from victory! It’s so unintuitive because Mudkup doesn’t look that hurt. But this is a battle of style over damage.

“Foresight! They can’t hide from us!”

“PEPPER! FLASH!” You shout.

The lamp explodes into flashing lights. Instead of one big flash, it’s a blinding, rapid flashing that somehow comes through as a strobe light in the daytime.

The points quickly fade from your opponents bar, showing a decisive victory on your part just as the Foresight lands. A small target appears on Pepper. Or at least, on the lamp post Pepper is inside.

“Victory goes to Herb!” The judge announces.

But the flashing keeps going. You and your opponent slowly approach the flashing post, trying not to look at it but still trying to figure out what’s going on.

“Ghost Pepper. The match is over. You can stop.” You shout into the light. It’s not loud, but the light somehow feels like you need to yell into it to be heard.

The flashing continues.

“Want help?” She offers.

“Pepper! Come back!” You use your pokeball. Despite the blinding, flashing lights, you’re able to aim it well enough. The flashing finally ends.

You have to blink quite a bit.

“What happened?” A judge asks.

“I’m not sure.” You respond, looking at the pokeball.

The three judges look amongst themselves. Your opponent goes to them and starts talking about something you can’t quite hear clearly. But the general gist of it comes through anyway. You think they might be talking about the outcome of that match

Belladonna stomps impatiently. She seems a little upset at not having been in the first match

Real quickly, "Sorry, Bella, I just wanted to save you for last."

First you’ll worry about Pepper. You’re not sure what happened and want to know that he’s okay. You quickly take out your pokedex and check his status in the ball.

Huh. He seems alright. Not at full strength, but nowhere close to hurt. He looks exactly like a pokemon that won a clear victory in a recent battle.

“Sorry Belladonna. I just wanted to save you for another battle.” You tell her as you pass by. It seems enough to placate her for the moment. Feeling relieved at that, you turn your attention to the conversation before you miss your chance to get involved.

“I’m not asking for a win. I’m saying you shouldn’t reward that sort of thing.” The woman who was your opponent tells the judges. “It’s not a responsible lesson for young mainlander men. I-”

She goes silent when she sees you approach.

A judge, looking to change the subject, but also with some concern, looks to your pokeball. “Is your pokemon healthy?”

>Yes. I need to talk to him though. Thanks

“My dex says he’s physically fine.” You say, not sure how to explain the rest. “I may need to talk to him, though. Thanks for asking.”

The judges look among themselves again. You always have a hard time reading people when they do that. And it seems like a common thing on the islands.

“And I think Ghost Pepper earned his victory, if that’s what we’re talking about. It was a good match and I had fun.”

The woman is silent. She seems embarrassed.

“I want to hear what you have to say.” You gently insist. You glance back to your other Pokemon who are watching from just outside earshot. Besides wanting to always give the benefit of the doubt, you want to set a good example for your pokemon.

She coughs. “I was saying, and please don’t misunderstand, that it’s considered...taboo to use public infrastructure like that.”

“Taboo is a strong word.” One judge says. “But it’s considered...impolite towards the Electric temple. The circuits in the things they build, like this post, are carefully painted and blessed to warn spirits to stay out to avoid interference or problems.”

“Which is why I was saying you should have points deducted in your next match.” The woman explains. “It’s the same standard any Loanan would be held to.”

The judges don’t seem to fully agree with that, but aren’t strongly opposed either. It seems like a greyer area than what she’s saying. At least in their view.

The woman’s words seem nicer, but the sideways glance she gives you for half a second seems odd to you. That’s just your imagination though, right?

>That’s reasonable. You accept
>You didn’t know
>But you’ll be using a different pokemon. They don’t deserve to be punished for something they didn’t do

Fuck it, not like the win is even valuable to us regardless, and besides, it'll make us look like more than just another mainlander dickhead anyway, which is what I'm sure the woman thinks we are anyway.

>But you’ll be using a different pokemon. They don’t deserve to be punished for something they didn’t do
ultimately, though,
>Well, you’ll leave it to the judges. You trust them to know what’s best

Actually, why is she talking about Pepper like they're a spirit? They're a ghost type pokemon, yes, but there's a difference between a spirit and a ghost pokemon.

>But you’ll be using a different pokemon. They don’t deserve to be punished for something they didn’t do
>And if it is so important, why was it not in the rules? I would happily abide by any rules given to me, and if the judges see fit to dock points? I will abide their judgement. But, this is the first time this has ever come up, and no one had told me anything of it, not my traveling companions three of whom are native Loanan, nor my friend who while a mainlander, is often in these competitions.

Just change that to "If it was in the rules I wouldn't have done it." and I'd back it.

When you talk way too long like that, it comes across as you whining/rattling off excuses and makes people think you're disingenuous. There's no reason to be nearly that long-winded.
>>
>>3405590
>You didn’t know
>But you’ll be using a different pokemon. They don’t deserve to be punished for something they didn’t do
Thank them for explaining too.
>>
“If it is so important, why was it not in the rules?” You ask, more curious than offended.

“It’s not a rule of the contest. It’s our culture. It’s something everyone knows.” The woman says.

Oh. Nobody told you. But you don’t say that. You think you know how that would sound coming from you. “I don’t think it’s fair to my next pokemon. It’s not their fault.”

“You are your pokemon are a team. Yes, sometimes they won’t have some opportunities because of your actions. And you will lose some opportunities because of theirs. But the sum of your lives will be better, and more whole, for your union. You and they are family.” The lead judge says. It seems a little preachy, but it’s not a bad sentiment.

“Thank you for explaining. I trust you to do what’s best and accept your judgement.” You offer a polite bow to the judges.

You let them talk among themselves about what happens next. They seem relieved that you didn't cause a scene, which feels odd to you. Maybe you're just reading too much into things that aren't there.

Your next match will wait until the other first round battles going on finish, which shouldn’t be too long.

Hana and Abigail are watching some of the other matches. They seem to have stopped paying attention after your win, not seeing anything wrong.

You bow to your opponent.

She looks a little taken aback, but bows respectfully back. “It was a great match. Thank you.” Her tone seems genuine.

With that, you step aside and take out your pokeball. “Come on out, Pep.”

Ghost Pepper buzzes about with surprising speed. Enough to make you wonder if he took “pep” as a command. He comes to a standstill near you.

“Hey, Pepper.” You say as the pokemon stops in front of you.

“He is worried, but doesn’t want you to know.” Gardevoir’s voice echoes in your head, spooking you a bit.

Ghost turns to face her, looking razzled.

“I wish to translate.” She says. You’re not sure if that’s to you or him. “It is a joyess task to illuminate. And this one makes bright lights.” That sounds almost like there’s a wink in her normally flat tone.

You don’t have much time to talk.

Bella stomps up at him, looking upset.

I see you added a bunch of those details in the pastbin!

Some notes:
Togepi still needs wish added.
Chatot's ability is listed as pressure, this is either a big accomplishment for Laki/Chatot or a typo when you were adding Wailord's ability.

Several pokemon have their abilities already confirmed, or there's only one canon ability, and are ready to be listed.

Pepper: Levitate
Belladonna: Technician (it's listed as her Roselia ability)
Bergmite: Sturdy
Chinchou: volt absorb
Shedinja: Wonder guard
Hitmonlee: Limber I think?
Hydregion: Levitate
Spiritomb: Probably Infiltrator, I think we would have noticed if it had Pressure
Aggron: Probably not Heavy Metal, or that would probably have been noticed.

Adding Cubone and Gardevoir to the bin would probably be a good idea too, especially as (I think) Cubone has gotten to a place where we can start focusing on her training.

I'm really excited to start hashing out training ideas for these guys, so I'm looking forwards to seeing these details fleshed out.
>>
>>3405747
Unrelated to anything happening in this thread, but do we know when Laki's birthday is? Or anyone else's for that matter? I know Hana's birthday was the same day we were at the grass temple and we only found out by accident.
>>
>>3408929
I don’t think we even know Herb’s birthday.
>>
>>3408929
[When it's narratively convenient. If you'd like to have that event I'm totally open, though]
>>
>>3410953
What I’m hearing is “Herb should have a Barmitzfah equivalent.” and I’m 100% on board.
>>
>>3410953
Herb seems like the kind of person who wants to give his friends well planned, thoughtful gifts, especially since he nearly missed Hana's.
>>3411229
Never before have I felt such a mighty need.
>>
>>3411229
This sounds amazingly fun and a great way to get some more family time.

That is if the Fugs don't interfere.
>>
>>3411229
To expound on my idea here, I’d really like to see Herb on the other side of the cultural divide some more. Being the one with the traditions and culture others don’t have an awareness of. Optimally, that would be when we visit our old home for the execution of grandpa’s estate, bringing our friends over there to see how we grew up. Even Hana may not have grown up on the same continent as us, despite being a part of the same sort of global economy.

One thing I’d like to explore is Herb’s chosen name/birth name. Are those a thing or is it just happenstance for his family/self? Does Herb totally plan on giving his kids all “Jo” names?

Something interesting would also be Keira re:nudity. In a place like New York, she’d legally be able to be topless on the streets, but she’s be sure to be kicked out of any private establishment. On top of how she’d like the large, empty, snowy fields passing by on a train ride.

It’d be sure to be weird to not be able to see the ocean.
