In the far future, biotechnology advances by leaps and bounds, creating stunning achievements in medical, civil, and military applications. Illness becomes a thing of the past, and genetic modification is as commonplace as cosmetic surgery.

However, like all great advances, unchecked progress and experimentation has led to abuse and corruption. Ultra powerful megacorporations that monopolized the latest biotech have risen to be the great powers of the age, waging secret wars of sabotage, espionage, and deceit to get ahead of each other.

In order to fuel their rampant growth, megacorps develop lethal diseases and viruses, horrific bio-organic abominations, and ever more exotic genetic modifications to both sell to the highest bidder and unleash upon each other.

The rampant proliferation of bioweapons, and the need to contain them, has given rise to a new profession, the BIOWEAPON HUNTER.

You are LEWIS, a Hunter specializing in hunting down biological threats with your T-Doll companion HK!

You're not sure how it is that vacations end up making you feel even more tired than when you left, but this one was no exception. You're fighting to keep yourself mobile as you disembark the Umbrella charter plane after it landed back in Raccoon City.

As expected, SOPMOD had parted ways with you back at Rockfort Island, presumably to go track down that "mystery dinosaur" which was obviously Carol in disguise. Mom decided to leave with Carol, so the both of them were going to be cruising around the tropics for who knows how long,

"Lewis, do you require assistance?" HK asks with a hint of concern as she follows you out of the plane, lugging the majority of the equipment and baggage effortlessly.

"Nah, just shaking off some jet lag." You yawn.

"It's still morning here." HK points out. "Where should we go?"

"I think we'll drop by the office." You say. "Just to check up on the others."

"And I assume to pass around the gifts you got for them." HK adds.

"Yeah, that too." You nod.

It's simple grabbing a cab to take you to the office. The driver doesn't bat an eye at the ridiculous amount of luggage HK casually crams into the trunk. Being a Raccoon City cab driver means you've seen a lot things and learn not to ask a lot of questions besides where to go and how fast.

It's a quick drive there, and already you're feeling a bit more relieved being back on familiar territory. G is already at the door to greet you, and quickly snatches all the luggage HK is carrying, obviously insisting on carrying it all herself.

"Welcome back, Lewis." G says simply. "Things have been... quiet without you around."

"I don't know if that's supposed to be a compliment or not." You frown.

"Just an observation." G replies coolly.

"So how are things going right now?" You wonder.

"The Boss is currently at a business meeting and is not present. Nemo and Artya are in the lab section and Hank is filling in for the Boss in administration."

"Wait, the Boss put HANK in charge?" You gasp.

"Under my supervision." G says sternly.

"Right, right." You calm down. The Boss wouldn't do something THAT crazy without a contingency or two.

You keep following G to the office area, where you could see Hank at his desk, practically hidden behind a wall of stacked up paperwork. Even in this digital age, paper just never truly died, especially for old timers like Hank.

"I reeeeaaally hope you're bringing a fresh pot of coffee, G." Hank grumbles. "Because if I have to forge the Boss' signature one more time I'm gonna-"

Hank then looks up and sees you and HK.

"Oh, the vacation boy's finally come back, too." Hank grunts in annoyance. "Must've been fun, huh?"

"Oh yeah, it was the best." You nod, giving them most smug and taunting grin you could manage. "Sun, beach, girls, the whole shebang!"

"G, as the acting boss, I'd like to nominate myself for a vacation." Hank grumbles.

"Then there wouldn't be anybody around to run the office." G responds sternly. "Just submit a request to the Boss per company procedure."

"That harpy would never approve it." Hank sighs.

"I do not recommend calling her that." G warns.

"Even with the Boss gone I can't have any fun with this tin can around." Hank sighs and glances at HK. "No offense."

"None taken." HK responds.

"So, what brings you to my little corner of misery?" Hank asks as he leans back in his chair.

"Well, I come bearing gifts." You smile as you reach into your bag and set the raptor claw you bought for him down on the small patch of clear space on Hank's desk.

"Ah great, something I can use to stab you with." Hank nods appreciatively as he picks up the claw and inspects it. "This is the real thing?"

"That's what the shop claims." You shrug.

"Huh. Well, damn shame we won't be seeing more of these around." Hank sets the claw down on the desk. "So they really took all those dinos out behind the shed?"

"Pretty much, yeah." You confirm. "Guess Umbrella figured that venture wasn't all that profitable."

"Well yeah, otherwise InGen wouldn't have been bought out like that." Hank sighs. "Still, they used to be one of the frontrunners in the whole biotech field. Sad to see them go like this."

Uh oh, Hank was about to go into his Old Man mode. Something he was prone to do when he was bored. You've heard enough odd stories during those long and boring stakeout jobs.

"Anyways, G, this is for you." You hand her the box containing the dino tooth necklace.

"Ah, thank you." G nods appreciatively as she accepts the gift. "If only Master were this generous."

"Heeeeeeeey!" Hank narrows his eyes. "What's that supposed to mean?"

Well, you figure that HK's apparently shifting or warping directives seemed to be concerning enough to bring up to Nemo at least. However, you were a bit torn on whether you should do it in HK's presence. What would she think about it?

"Hey, HK." You turn to your T-Doll. "Do you mind helping G get all the gear we borrowed stowed away? We did pack pretty heavy for that job."

"Of course." HK nods. "I'll be standing by once we're finished."

"Great. Thanks a lot." You grin.

As HK pivots around and heads back to the office area, you continue on to the lab, where it seemed Nemo and Artya were clearly slacking, both of them huddled around a tv screen and presumably playing some sort of game on it.

"Hey, Lewis." Nemo says softly as her hands tap away on the controller they hold. "Finally back?"

Artya just silently nods, her own hands occupied with the controller so she couldn't write on her tablet.

"Yep, and I come bearing gifts." You grin as you take out the two stuff dinosuars, a T-Rex and a triceratops.

Artya is instantly across the distance between you two and seizes the stuffed T-Rex. She was always a sucker for free stuff.

You just casually toss the remaining stuffed animal, the triceratops, towards Nemo and she casually catches with a single hand, her remaining one still working her controller. She had way too much free time to get good at that sort of thing.

"So, where's HK?" Nemo asks, still not looking up from her screen. "Hope she didn't get too damaged."

"Just a few scrapes, nothing major." You assure her. "But there's something I want to talk about regarding her."

"Oh? And what is it?"

"Well, I've been noticing as time goes on that HK's been acting... well... more human." You report. "At least, that's what it feels like to me."

"Oh?" Nemo actually pauses her game and sets down the controller. "Do tell."

"Well, I first noticed that HK's been essentially stalking me." You summarize. "I confronted her about it, assuming that it was something off on her protection directives, but HK told me that she was doing it out of fear being seen as useless."

"Hm, that is odd." Nemo puts a hand to her chin. "While T-Dolls are supposed to have prioritization for self preservation, none of them are supposed to have any programming that's supposed to simulate fear. It would be counterproductive to their intended roles."

"Which is why I found it really odd." You agree. "Do you think that HK might be, I don't know, evolving?"

"Too early to say." Nemo frowns as she turns her attention to her computer. "The problem with trying to simulate human behavior as closely as possible is that you might do too good a job of it. Doesn't really help that a T-Doll's base operating systems are almost incomprehensibly complex."

"That doesn't sound to helpful." You frown.

"Because it's not." Nemo sighs and leans back in her chair. "There's only one person on the planet who'd probably know, and that's... my mom."

"Auntie Egan?" You blink.

"Well duh, she's the one who patented the basic T-Doll OS." Nemo rolls her eyes. "Every T-Doll you see today uses software based on her work."

You notice a hint of annoyance coloring Nemo's tone. She naturally had a few... issues with her mom, considering the whole family situation with Lucina, and you honestly couldn't blame her.

"I'm fine with your input, Nemo." You smile. "You've never been wrong before."

"Heh, I guess you're right." Nemo mumbles.

Artya then softly elbows Nemo.

"Q-quit it!" Nemo barks. "Okay, I've got a working theory, but it's just a theory."

"Hit me with it." You nod.

"Okay, I'm assuming you just went off and authorized HK to alter her own code."

"Um, yeah." You nod. "It was to help her stay flexible in unconventional situations."

"So that's one mystery solved." Nemo grunts. "There's only been two other T-Dolls I know of that have had that same capability unlocked."

"ST-AR and SOPMOD." You guess.

"Bingo." Nemo nods. "T-Dolls are programmed to be learning machines, to rapidly adapt to numerous situations. It's what puts them a step above BOWs. Most commercial T-Dolls have that learning capability artificially throttled. Can't risk having them being TOO smart, you know? But the first run prototypes still have that functionality."

"So you're saying that HK just straight up learned how to feel anxiety?" You blink.

"That's what it sounds like." Nemo nods. "Likewise, events occurred to make ST-AR and SOPMOD the way they are as well. In humans, trauma influences behavior, so it's only natural that entities built to act like humans will act in the same way."

That makes you a bit curious on what exactly ST-AR and SOPMOD went though to be so aloof and psychotic respectively.

"That's all I need to know. Thanks, Nemo." You smile as you ruffle her hair.

Artya is quick enough to take a picture at the exact moment.

"H-hey!" Nemo pouts. "That's not funny!"

However, the moment is interrupted by a knock at the door.

"Erm, is it okay to enter?" HK's voice asks from the other side.

"Oh, you can come in." Nemo replies.

The door slides open and HK enters.

"My apologies, Nemo, but I did suffer some minor damage during the mission." HK reports. "It's nothing serious, but my diagnostics are reporting a 6% loss in mobility and a 9% loss in overall combat efficiency."

"Well, you at least still have your limbs attached." Nemo yawns. "She'll probably have to stay here overnight to get tuned up, unless you need her for anything else?"

You only have just enough time to see the slightly shocked but very angry expression on the Boss' face when she realizes shes been duped. However, you're smart enough not to stick around to be the victim of her wrath, and you're already moving and out the door when she starts yelling.

"LEWIS YOU"RE SO GETTING YOUR PAY DOCKED YOU ASSHOLE!!"

She was totally kidding. She'd eventually cool down and forget about it.

Maybe.

You hope.

You swiftly make your escape from the office, your car blazing out of the garage and onto the Raccoon City streets.

Well, the office was going to be a little hot right now, so you couldn't really go back for the time being.

And it's just now that you realize, both Mom and Carol were off on the high seas, HK was in for maintenance, and everybody else was back at the office. You actually had... free time for yourself, weirdly enough.

Your reach the RCPD HQ with no issues, though you do attract a few curious glances from some passing officers. You've gotten "picked up" often enough that you're somewhat of a regular here, so it was probably odd to them that you were apparently willingly visiting.

You head to the front desk to sign in, and the officer on duty looks at you warily right as the phone on his desk rings. He picks it up, pauses as whoever's on the other end speaks, and then hangs up.

"Sir, just head down that hallway and take the elevator." The officer points to the hall behind his desk. "It's considered a restricted are, so please don't deviate from the path."

Well, guess being buddies with the chief did have its perks, though you wonder why Lucina didn't just come down to see you herself. You follow the officer's instructions and enter the open elevator, which heads up to the top floor.

As the doors slide open, you see ST-AR casually sitting at a desk positioned in front of what you assume to be the Chief's office. It was a bit amusing, seeing like that.

"Hey." She says simply.

"So I see you got a promotion to secretary." You grin. "Does it come with dental?"

"Ha. Ha." ST-AR responds without a hint of humor. "Maybe I should've just told the desk officer to kick you out."

"Hey, don't be like that." You chuckle. "I guess they didn't program you to have a sense of humor?"

"Nope." ST-AR crosses her arms. "Anyways, Lucina's a bit busy at the moment. She's in a meeting of sorts. She's just wrapping up, so she should be back in a couple minutes."

"Meeting with you?" You ask, a bit curious.

"Some big shot from the BSAA." ST-AR shrugs. "Naturally, the fact that she's talking to Feds is making a lot of people nervous."

"I guess so." You nod. "Guess the local guys don't like federal agents barging in on their turf."

"Or, they're being called in to investigate something the locals can't be trusted with." ST-AR shrugs. "Or maybe, to investigate the locals themselves."

"I mean, it's not like the RCPD has had the greatest reputation to start with.' You point out.

"True. Maybe she's trying to clean up the force. Maybe she's got her eyes on a big fish." ST-AR frowns. "But she hasn't told me anything."

Lucina had always been terribly self conscious after the true nature of her conception came to light. It had put a lot of pressure on her to perform to expectations, and she quickly learned to bottle up all of her thoughts and concerns so as not to make people worry or think less of her.

You also suspect that there was a bit of shame to it as well. A lot of her peers ended resenting her out of jealousy, and you weren't too proud to admit that you were among them for a time. You were young and dumb, after all.

But you felt it wasn't your place to say all these things to ST-AR.

"You should probably ask Lucina about it, if you can pry it out of her." You reply calmly.

"Hmph. Figures." ST-AR sighs.

And as if on cue, the elevator doors slide open and Lucina walks out, pausing when she sees you.

"Lewis?" She blinks. "Star, why didn't you tell me he was here?"

"You were in a meeting, remember?" ST-AR rolls her eyes. "Couldn't very well have you walking out just to see your boyfriend."

Lucina seems to be taken aback at that last word ST-AR utters.

"Well, she's not wrong." You grin.

"Oh, shut up, Lewis." Lucina groans as she punches you in the shoulder.

"Well, I suppose I should give you two lovebirds your privacy." ST-AR sighs as she gets up from her chair. "I'll go grab some coffee. Don't make a mess while I'm gone."

ST-AR heads down into the hall and around the corner, out of sight, leaving you alone with Lucina.

"So, erm, I guess you can come into my office." Lucina says awkwardly.

Lucina opens the door and leads you inside. However, the office looked rather plain, with just a desk and few pictures hanging on the walls. It was pretty spartan, otherwise.

"I haven't had a lot of time to really settle in yet." Lucina sighs as she sits down on her chair and leans back. "I hardly have time to spend sitting still, it seems like."

You then take the wrapped package containing the dinosaur onesie from your bag and present it to Lucina.

"Nah, I don't think she needs to know." You shake your head. "She's supposed to be on vacation relaxing, so I don't see any reason to put more worries on her."

"That's a good point." Lucina smiles and holds out her hand. "Now then, shall we?"

"Let's go." You nod as you take her hand.
