Cover-art kindly provided by our noble artiste, Draw-anon, who kindly took time off repainting the Sistine Chapel for us. Look upon our prettyboy protagonist. Look upon his devilish smile and despair.

In last thread’s episode of Confused Eye for the Oblivious Guy Quest, our hero PRINCESS TASHIGI FLASHMAN managed to practice Billiards to a not-quite-combat-ready state, followed by the ship’s arrival in Renaisse for resupply. While Tashigi’s manly younger brother signed up for (and won) a duelling tournament, Tashigi ended up duelling Prince Fop, winning his recruitment into the Marines and the promise of a new sword. Now the tournament’s prize sword has been stolen by MYSTERIOUS THIEVES! There was also apparently some crossdressing in the background, but it wasn’t very important.

We now return you to your scheduled idiocy.
>>
>what the hell is this ‘like’ thing? is this a desktop only thing? wtf?

Whatever’s going on, Tashigi’s in pursuit and Smoboss is covering the outside if they manage to escape her and whatever guards there are. Hell, you can even hear the king-dude and the local Commodore yelling orders.

Right now, if Detective Pistol-chan has taught you anything, it’s the importance of gathering accurate information! And maybe remembering to put the safety on. But information! That’s the priority right now!

You fling yourself down to the arena, hurtling down the aisle-steps, past the panicking audience, charging over to where the flustered guard is talking to another pair, exchanging rapid words.

>Who were they? What did they look like?
>How many are there?

“Who were they?” There’s no time to waste as you reach the three guards, not when there’s JUSTICE to uphold! “What did they look like? Was anyone hurt?”

One of the guards’s eye narrowed, obviously not pleased by being questioned by a Marine. The other two seem less bothered.

“There were two, a swordsman and a woman,” the original guard babbles, still panicked. “They beat us around, grabbed the meito and ran for it. The guy had a top hat and a katana, and the woman had purple hair and some kind of fans! She called the guy ‘Mr 11’, but none of us ever saw them before!”

You doubt you’ll catch up to Tash- uh, Harry, and if they manage to escape her, there’s no guarantee Smoboss will be on the right side of the palazzo to grab them if they emerge, especially if they split up.

That said, by the name ‘Mr 11’, that definitely sounds like the Baroque Works agents Curly’s described in his reports; and if they’re not based in Renaisse, they’ll probably plan to leave ASAP.

Which means... the docks!

>FLASHY VS ROOFTOPS: ROUND 1

It doesn’t take too long, the corridors empty, to escape the Palazzo.

The time has come.

You gaze up at the buildings of Renaisse; three, four storeys tall, roofs not flat, but not sharply-slanted. Dry weather, no rain-slick tiles to step on. Some gaps between buildings, especially over the canals, but not out of the bounds of possibility.

It’s happening.

You’re going to do this.

For justice.

For swords.

For the defeat of rooftops everywhere.

“Mama,” a small child tugs at her mother’s sleeve as they pass by you determinedly climbing up some kind of municipal building. If there’s one good thing about the architecture here, it’s all so overloaded with pretty ornamental features and statuary, there’s plenty to get a grip on. “Why’s that strange woman climbing up there?”

You manage to keep climbing rather than ‘accidentally’ tug a windowsill flower-display down on the kid’s head.

“Just ignore it, darling, some people are strange...”

Screw you assholes, this is for JUSTICE!

Tugging yourself onto the roof (phew, that was a lot easier than the last time you tried this sort of thing), you lock your eyes towards the direction of the docks, and RUN.

You charge like a sprinter, and jump like a... long-jumper? Huh, you’ll have to work on that. In any case, under the heat of the mid-afternoon Sun, you run the goddamn rooftops of Renaisse like you were born to it.

(General Fitness +1, new Parkour skill +3)

Your boots find traction on the roofs with ease, eyes picking out the best places to run or jump to, without losing your balance at any sudden shifts in height or angle.

Gaps between buildings? No problem. You’re ready for each one, judging with an accuracy borne of intense training with combat-distances where you need to push off from, and with how much force.

Canal? Big deal. Small building squished between two taller ones? Whatever. You jump it in a heartbeat, without even thinking. Dodge aside some weird looking gargoyles, plunge through a rooftop garden, onto a ledge far thinner than you’d normally consider safe, hand out to grab a corner as you swing yourself round, grab onto a windowsill (smile politely at the gawping man inside), pull yourself up, across a tiled rooftop, avoid the loose-looking patch there, another canal to jump -

Huh. Kinda nice view from up here.

But mostly importantly, the docks are straight ahead, and you have CRIMINAL SCUM to await!

>>
>i choose you, pistol-chwaaaaaan

You glance over the side of the building you’re currently on, judge the distance, shrug, and drop.

Hitting the ground at a crouch, the pressure slams up your legs, breath exploding from your lungs, before you straighten up, ignoring the cracked concrete beneath you.

Stepping out from the buildings, into the docks proper, you scan your eyes over the busy area.

There’s the White Mist, nice and obvious - another Marine ship too, one of the local ones. Aside from that, nearly a dozen merchant and passenger ships, as well as an assortment of smaller boats and pleasure yachts, doubtless belonging to people coming for the tournament, or rich local nobles. Even apart from them, there’s far more fishing boats than you could reasonably check...

You grit your teeth. Then your hand reaches for Detective Pistol-chan, drawing him from his holster.

You gaze down at Pistol-chan. She gleams back at you, waiting.

“Pistol-chan,” you tell her, a lone man talking to his gun in the middle of the docks, as one does. “I gotta find these guys. Partly because they’re criminal scum that might have information about Baroque Works, and partly because Tashigi will murder me if she thinks I let them get away with her new sword.”

Pistol-chan feels cold in your loose grip.

Two metal fans, spread open to reveal their top edges thinned into a curved blade, go flying at your face. They're aimed damn well - a flurry of panic breaks your Haki as they're suddenly right in front of you, and only a graceless dodge-stumble to the side saves you from having to learn blind-fighting. Or death, you suppose.

The fans slash past, one half-impaling a wooden post, the other hurtling past, and you don't bother to check where it landed, because Miss Thursday is already swinging another pair of fans at you; these ones the chained fans you first practiced with.

She also looks seriously pissed off.

>>Get back out of range without being hit (medium DC)

Let's get back out of range and look at our options first.
Cutting through the chains sounds good, but I'd rather not risk it if we have the chance to outlast her stamina-wise (due to her leg wounds), or if we can exploit her injuries to take her down without coming near the fans.
>>
Why are we trying to cut the chains, entangling them is probably easier and would give us a way to either disarm her or prevent her from running.
>>
>>3401464
Cutting the chains will disarm her too - since she needs to get up close and personal to be able to effectively use the fans without the chain, and with her two legwounds I'm betting that Flash can overpower her pretty easily.

The most dangerous thing about the chained fans is that she can get a good hit on us without having to move around a lot.

The sight of two bladed half-moons swinging at your face sends up a flurry of panic, but then you stagger back from the first one (almost slicing the bridge of your nose, way too close), before Haki kicks in for the second and you easily avoid it.

A few feet of rapid backdrops to avoid avoid swing, and both of you can tell you're out of range, unless she can move... and judging by the rapidly spreading pools of blood under her kneeling legs, that's not really an option.

The fury on Miss Thursday's face dulls to mild frustration despite the agony she must be feeling, as she slows the fans reels them back in, grabbing them by the hilts rather than the chains as you steady your aim on her.

"You couldn't at least beat me with fans, boy-o?"

"Thank you for recognizing I'm a guy, it's appreciated," you say, because politeness is important, and it really is a relief not to be called 'girl-o' or 'girly' or something. "Now, tell me where your buddy and the sword is, and I'll leave. You might even get away in the meantime."

Your Haki detects first confusion at your thanks, then a curious intensity of suspicion-hope-determination at your offer.

"And I'm supposed to believe you'll stick to that, ah?" Her eyes narrow at you. "Swear to it. By whatever you hold most dear. Then I'll see whether I believe you."

You take a moment to figure out what you value the most, and aside from terrible puns, the answer comes easy. The people you care about. Who actually, somehow (and sometimes you can hardly believe it) care about it. The sort of people you never had after the orphanage, or even while you WERE there, where they cared for you out of duty and a liking for children rather than any particular preference for you as an individual.

"I'll swear on my -" 'friend's, you open your mouth to say. "- family." Slips out instead. "The bonds I've made with the people I've grown close to. Tell me where the sword and Mr 11 are."

Thursday stares at you. Beneath the bland expression, she feels like surprise-tiredness-thoughtfulness-annoyance-regret-acceptance. It's muddy as all hell.

"Okay," she says finally. "I actually believe you mean that. Color me surprised, boy-o. So here's your answer - Mr 11 had the sword when we split up. And last I saw, he was already getting his ass kicked by some pissed-off Ensign with a katana. So. Are you still going to walk away and leave me?"

She smirks at you, and you can tell from the vindication-bitterness-acceptance that with all her cards played, she's uncertain only if cuffs or a bullet await her.

>>
>>3401848
It may not have resulted in anything, but a deal's a deal. She told us where her partner and the sword were, that was her end of the bargain.

Now's the time when we walk away and leave her - and find Smoboss and tell the marines where she is. We never promised we wouldn't do the last bit, and this way, we're giving her a chance to escape. A lousy chance, seeing as she's been shot in both legs, but still a chance.

>any excuse to flash (hoho) the tat

The information she gives you is... pretty much worthless. All it tells you is that there's nothing you can do, that the problem has probably already been solved.

But...

"A deal's a deal," you say, feeling shock-confusion-reluctanthope. And then you turn back to the direction of the Palazzo, and walk away, leaving a silent, bewildered Thursday bleeding on the ground.

Then you pause and turn back. "So I'm all for honoring our deal, but do you want me to bandage your wounds first? I kind of just realized shooting you in the legs over a sword was a bit of an escalation, and now I feel bad."

She stares back at you, bewilderment rising. "... I tried to kill you."

You shrug. "Well, to me, that's pretty much a normal 'Thursday', haha!" Then you finger-gun, because you're some kind of punning genius.

She stares even harder at you, blank-faced, before looking down at her bleeding legs. "Trying to get me out of my pants, huh, boy-o? How unexpected."

"... I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have to lose all of them," you say, because you're lacking in experience in the 'removing other people's pants' department. "And - okay, I don't actually have bandages, but I could use my shirt?"

Thursday scoffs. "Just fuck off if you're really going to."

She feels like she means it... so after a few seconds, you do.

You take to the rooftops again, because it's faster, but not quite so urgent that you go at full speed; all the same, you have to pause to answer a den den call from the White Mist, reporting gunshots at the docks, followed by a search for the perpetrators - a pool of blood found, but nothing else.

You're pretty damn sure that Thursday, assuming she even survived, didn't get away by herself. Millions, or Billions, or whatever they're called?

Either way, by the time you get to the Palazzo, it looks like it's all over, struggling crowds of spectators safely leaving, which you doubt they'd allow if a dangerous thief were still around.

Well, I was kind of expecting you to fight her with fans and thus pick up bonus fan skill points from being good enough to pick up more of her style, but that didn't work out... that said, you opened the way for future possibilities, and prevented her from killing herself to escape capture, so not an entirely bad result?

Plus Flashy realized how he considers those close to him, established his own honor in keeping a promise despite getting basically nothing in return, and even offered to assist a woman who'd just tried to kill him, further establishing his character development.

Besides, Miss Thursday got away in canon too, so not as if it's a worse result than before.

You've also unlocked a Future Event you otherwise wouldn't have got, via all those write-ins, ohohoho, etc.

>>

You know, that Miss Thursday is smart enough to kill herself to avoid capture, but stupid enough to pull this stunt, is remarkable.

Crocodile got BW the governmental greenlight by making them an organization of bounty hunters and mercenaries. These two idiots stealing a Meito in such a obvious way while being ID'd, would have caused him to kill them and turn them over to the Government, in order to keep his organization clean until he got his hands on Pluton.
>>

When the den den rings, you naturally expect it to be Smoboss or Tashigi, so you're mildly surprised when Sunglasses' worried voice comes over the line. "Aniki, are you okay?"

You look down at the last few remaining scoop of your ice cream. "Uh. Yes. I've been... busy."

"Oh, good! We were starting to get worried, no-one's seen you since the sword was stolen!"

"Right, yeah, it was found again, right? I think I heard." BLUFF. BLUFF, YOU FOOL.

"Wow, that sucks," you say, for lack of anything more convincing. "Mr 11 talking at all?"

"Not as far as I know, but the Captain's in with him now! The local Commodore's ticked off because we're refusing to hand him over for interrogation - I don't think there's any proof that he might be in Baroque Work's pocket, but the Captain isn't taking chances."

"Yeah, he wouldn't," you say, thinking of the rampant corruption it must take to let a guy get away with setting up Baroque Works and giving him almost free reign to take over a country.

Why would anyone WANT to rule a country, anyway? From what you've seen, most people hate paperwork, why do they want more of it? Dumbasses. "We're still leaving tomorrow, right?"

"Yeah, in the morning. Oh, and there's some new kid on board, who was looking for you? I mean, he said Tashigi, but he obviously meant you."

New k-?

You freeze.

"Um. Has he said anything about..." You being a girl? No, you can't even suggest that out loud. The second Smoboss or Klaus find out, you'll WISH you were dead. "Actually

"- I'll be heading back to the ship soon, anyway." After you finish your ice cream, naturally.

"All right, I'll tell everyone you're okay! See you, aniki!"

Sunglasses cheerfully signs off, apparently not too badly hurt by whatever his final tournament placement was.

Meanwhile, you stare at the melting dribs of creamy, sugary goodness.

Miss Thursday. The woman who casually let you use her fans, even taught you how to use them, recommended you a place to get your own. A nice enough woman. Except she's a criminal. A criminal working for another criminal who wants to take over a country and murder a bunch of people in the process. And she tried to kill you.

Not like she was apologizing for it, either.

You kind of want to punch something, but you don't think that would make anything any clearer. Might be satisfying, though.

And what are you supposed to do? Tell Smoboss, 'oh hey, Miss Thursday taught me how to how to use fans! Also I let her go because of a technicality, even though she gave me zero useful information. Tee hee!'?

You don't think it would be latrine duty for that. Maybe the brig, instead.

And yet... what use would telling anyone be? Would anyone gain anything by it? You know her home island, sure, but not her real name. You doubt she'd have told anything if she were caught, or at least no more than Mr 11 would.

Smoboss would probably believe you if you told him you had no idea who she was when you first met, but it's going to have to go in an official report someday soon, especially with Vice Admiral Garp involved, and would anyone else accept that you just have a really weird life?

It's just... a whole bundle of trouble. And no matter how you turn it over, or what you try and shake out of it, you've got an unpleasant feeling about the whole thing.

Well. That's a problem for future Flashy.

>smokin'

Seeing as you'll be setting off tomorrow, this means it's your last opportunity to do any shopping or to avert your potential (and likely) death at the hands of a furious Logia.

In other words, it's BRIBERY O'CLOCK.

Renaisse seems more into cigarettes than cigars, but you finally find a tobacco shop with a good selection, and you've seen Smoboss smoke enough of them that you can pick out his favored brand in an instant. You go to buy a box, then remember that you ditched a supply run so you could duel a Prince while using your colleague's identity, and decide that two boxes sound better.

... Actually, make that three.

The shop-owner raises an eyebrow as you pile the three boxes down on the counter, glancing at your uniform. "Gonna be a long time at sea, huh?"

"Better than in it," you tell him, fixing him with the eyes of a dead man walking.

"... Riiiight. That everything?"

No, because you just spotted a dam box of novelty cigars made of chocolate, which sounds like just the sort of thing to give Mina and then take a picture of her. Maybe see if you can steal Smoboss' jacket for her as well, to scowl and pose- no! Bad Flashman! That's how you die again!

You, uh, buy them anyway.

As you head back to the docks, via boat and gondola this time, you wonder if you'll be buried at sea or if the bossman won't leave enough of you for a proper disposal.

The White Mist isn't overly hectic, but it's certainly bustling - the supplies you'd left the infantry to arrange have been delivered and are being loaded, preparations for tomorrow's sailing are being made before sunset, and off-duty crew are making the most of coming and going before they get stuck at sea again.

In all the chaos, you manage to get aboard mostly uncommented on. Some infantry pay more attention to you (one catches your eye and sadly draws a cross across his chest, the dick), but fortunately you're popular enough that no-one decides it'd be fun to go let the Captain know his prince-duelling subordinate is back.

All the same, you keep your head ducked low, and move fast up the gangplank and across the deck, out of sight from Smoboss' office or cabin windows as much as possible, on your way to Tashigi's cabin.

A few quick raps finds the door open slightly, Tashigi looking relieved as she sees who it is. Her lower-face looks a little red from scrubbing, but now pen-free. Disappointing. "Flashman! Where have you been?"

>

"Getting bribes," you say, holding up the bag of cigar boxes. "It's really hard to find cigars here..."

Tashigi looks scandalized. "Flashman! As if the Captain would punish you less just because of that! He might even increase it!"

"Considering I'm looking at about ten years of latrine duty, I'll risk it. Want a box?"

"Well..." Her eyes dart around. "... I'll pay you back."

"Sure, sure." You hand over a box, managing not to smirk. "You haven't spoken to him yet?"

"Only for him to give orders about the man I caught," Tashigi sighs. "I'm sure once he's finished talking to the local Commodore, he'll come back and..."

"Tear us to shreds?"

"... Yes." She hugs the cigar box close to herself, like a shield, before frowning. "Flashman... I'm sorry for using your name like that. They don't let women compete in the tournament, and I was worried they might try to look me up, so I didn't want to just make up a name, and have them realize they couldn't find me in the crew-listing.

"Too late," you proudly announce. "You're adopted now. HA!"

Tashigi laughs lightly, apparently relieved you're not taking offence at her running off and stealing your name for rule-breaking purposes. "Forgive me if I don't introduce myself as your brother..."

You pout. "Aaaaw, but you made such a good one! Wait, when's your birthday? You are younger, aren't you?" Physically at least, you hope. Mentally, you're about five.

"We're both 19, but I was born on October 6th," Tashigi says, adjusting her glasses (seriously, get them re-sized).

You stare at her. "October... 6th."

"Yes?"

You beam. "I was born on October 6th! That's the my mom filled out when she dropped me off!"

You stare at each other, feeling the intense bond that can only come from two people realizing they don't have to fight over who's oldest. Then you high-five to celebrate.

"TWINS," you declare. "Identical! We switched identities and no-one even knew!"

"... Flashman, everyone who knows us knew."

You raise an eyebrow. "You haven't spoken to Yu yet, have you?"

"Huh?"

"Never mind, Twinshigi." You wave the matter aside. "Speaking of, uh, identity stuff, have you seen Fop yet? The new guy?"

She frowns again. "Yes, not too long ago. Apparently he specifically requested to be assigned to the White Mist, and the Captain agreed after a quick talk with him. That is the Prince, right? He looks... a lot different without all the additions."

You take that to mean the wig and crap on his face. "That's him, although I haven't seen him yet. You said he already talked to Smoboss?" Oh sea-gods and soul-devouring spirits.

"Yes. He seemed quite surprised to see me as a woman, though he was understanding when I explained why I used your identity." Tashigi smiles, probably glad he didn't run off to report her and get the sword taken back. "He said something about crossdressing being more common than he'd thought...?"

>i'm pretty sure fop thinks he's the protagonist

Turning on your heel, you leave a confused Tashigi behind, and power-walk over to the nearest infantryman. Apparently Fop is currently settling into his own cabin (own cabin? He can't have made officer, right?), which is great, because it means you can corner him in there and not have anyone overhearing any Totally Unimportant Theories They Have No Business Hearing.

... Right, information control time!

You walk at a totally slow and not at all hurried pace towards the cabin you're directed to, knocking on the door in a calm and non-crazy manner.

All too quickly, the door opens to reveal...

Okay, yeah, it took a moment to recognize him.

You look up and down the guy who appears in brief confusion, before remembering that oh yeah, a lack of powder, rouge, beauty mark, wig, and fancy noble clothing can definitely change a guy. He's still wearing a mask, although now it's a plain, white half-mask, utterly lacking in jewels.

Yeah, probably kind of a lot.to ask him to ditch masks entirely, if they're really that... indecency-covering in these parts.

"Ensign!" Fop beams, waving a hand down his uniform, which is that of... a petty officer. Huh. Not a real officer, technically speaking - that starts at Ensign, but enough to separate him from the infantry. "See? It wasn't that difficult to sign up, or get assigned here. I'll have to study to take the officer exams, though."

>That's... that's great, Fop. Say, could we talk in your cabin, maybe?

"That's... that's great, Fop. Say, could we talk in your cabin, maybe?"

He looks surprised for a moment, before flushing slightly. "Yes, but - is that decent? Even tho-"

"Yeah-it's-cool-let's-go," you say, hand reaching up to shove him inside as you hurry in and kick the door closed behind you. "Okay, welcome to the Marines, great to have you, have-you-told-anyone-I'm-a-woman?"

Fop blinks at you as he works through what you just said. His cabin is as small and sparse as any other, you vaguely notice, rapier carefully hung on the wall alongside a Marine jacket. He sure did get his uniform sorted fast.

"I - no, of course not!" Foo straightens up, face serious and hang on heart. "I realized when I came on board and met Ensign Tashigi - the real one - that she was also a woman, and that she must have crossdressed to enter the tournament, and taken your own fake identity for it. I wasn't certain whether she got the idea from you or came up with it by herself, so I simply accepted her explanation that you were the real 'Harry Flashman', and a man."

You almost sink into the planking in relief. "I... I see. That's great."

"Although frankly, you really should have picked a better name. Harry's fine, but Flashman? Putting a 'man' in there is a little too obvious, don't you think?"

"... Yeah. Good point. Thanks."

"So," Fop continues proudly, folding his arms, "Rest assured, your true identity remains the secret you've confirmed it to be."

Your relieved smile is frozen on your face. Perhaps one may even call it a rictus now, as you reach out and grip Fop by the shoulder.

"I see."

Your hand tightens, face still frozen in that expression, even as your emotions are too distant and alien for you to comprehend. They seem to exist of 'screaming'.

"Thank you for keeping my secret."

Your grip increases, Fop wincing slightly at the added strength.

"But it seems I must leave now. Perhaps for good. Farewell, Fop."

"What d-?"

You're already gone.

Physically and mentally. And spiritually.

It is time.

You know Smoboss arrived back not too long ago, while you were talking to Tashigi, by the men's cries of 'Captain coming aboard' and 'Captain on deck'.

Normally you'd assume he'd be a walking thundercloud from having to deal with the local Commodore and this mess. Right now, you have no idea. All you know from questioning one of the men is that he's gone to his office, looking... weirdly content.

Once, twice, thrice, you politely knock on the door.

"Who is it?"

You step in with a blank expression, letting the door CLICK closed behind you.

There he sits, behind his desk. Not lounging back with his boots up on the paperwork, but sitting attentively, gloves hands steepled and gaze locked onto you. He's smiling. Happily. Only one cigar, lazily emitting a curling plume of pure white smoke.

You're suddenly very glad that you went to the bathroom before you left that cafe earlier, because this is the most terrifying sight you've ever seen.

"Hello, Flashman," the demon in your Captain's skin says genially, still smiling. "I've been waiting for you."

"Because you want to see me suffer?"

"I guess you could put it that way. For all the good you've done," the dem- no, Smoboss, says, "you've brought me an absolute shitload of work and trouble. And just because you didn't do it on purpose, and just because it was good to have those messes found out and cleared out, doesn't mean I can't take some pleasure in finally watching luck bite you on the ass."

... Rude.

"I mean, seriously, brat?" He spunds frustrated now, reassuringly familiar scowl making a reappearance. "A runaway princess? How the hell did this mess even happen? And why didn't you explain when he first confronted you with this crap?"

"It made perfect sense at the time!" You're close to wailing, blank expression long broken to frantic panic. "He knew that 'Tashigi' was crossdressing, if I told him Tashigi was really the Harry from the tournament, he might have freaked out at a woman entering and got her disqualified! Would YOU keep Tashigi from a sword just because of some stupid rule like that?! She'd kill me!"

Smoboss has an eyebrow raised now. "I'm pleasantly surprised. That's actually reasonably logical for you."

"I'm not a TOTAL moron, dammit!"

"And the princess part?"

"... Okay, that's just because I convinced him I was an undercover prince a whole beforehand. For funsies."

But if our mother was a marine, wouldn't she have better luck tracking down our father? A civilian being unable to track down a marine makes more sense.

19 seems a bit too early for Papa to have gone on his super secret mission, so its not like that can be an excuse.
>>
All right, so Bellemere found Nami and Nojiko 18 years ago at Oykot Kingdom. Assuming Flashy was dropped off pretty much as a newborn, that would have been 19 1/2 years ago or so.

Bellemere was an officer (a fairly high ranking one, judging by the coat), so I doubt she signed up and progressed that far in one and a half years.

Several possibilities; first, ditch it entirely because it's not plausible.
Second, she lied to the orphanage staff for some reason about why she couldn't give the kid to the father. If she actually KNEW who he was, that could potentially explain why she thought giving a kid to him wasn't the best idea.
Third, a dramatic conspiracy theory which I won't ruin the details of in case people want to go for Belle-momma and severe complications/angst/drama, but which has the benefit of explaining why Bellemere was cool with adopting two kids despite having left one already, and also explains why Flashy was never adopted.
>>
>>3406595
I think if it has to get to the point where you must create a dramatic conspiracy theory to justify it, it's best to drop the idea. Honestly, I'd prefer biomom to be kept hidden from us entirely without any confirmation on your part as to her identity.
>>
>>3406619
I disagree.
Dumb conspiracy theories are the coolest.

You sigh, trying to figure out how to explain it. Does Smoboss even know what happened with Fop's family? "I mean, might as well let him believe he's in control of something at this point. He's just uprooted his entire life to join the Marines and tanked his relationship with his parents to maybe the point of no return. Taking this from him now is a little harsh, isn't it?"

Smoboss chews on the ends of his cigars thoughtfully. "This really should be the part where I point out that this is going to explode in your face somewhere down the line."

"... But?"

"This shipwreck is too good to watch," Smoboss tells you bluntly. "Seriously, this is the highlight of my month. I'm not sure catching Strawhat is gonna be this."

You restrain yourself from flipping him off. "Gee, thanks, bossman." You DO flip off Klaus, because he's sniggering and doesn't have the power to assign you more latrine duty.

"You're welcome, Princess." Smoboss smirks again, temporary niceness apparently all used up. "I won't tell him - and nor will Klaus - but it's up to you to deal with any day-to-day bullshit that results. I kept it vague during his interview, so if you're gonna make your story a bit more detailed, you'd better come with something soon, before he starts wondering why there's a princess on board."

>Got it. So what's happening with that Mr 11 guy?
>Klaus, don't you dare drop any hints to him.
>So if I'M not getting punished, is Tashigi?
>Other?

(If you guys want to come up with a ready story as to why a crossdressing princess is undercover as a Marine, now's the time! The more bullshit chaos I can cause with it, the better.
>>
>>3406595
I'd say ditch it.

Technically we already have the potential for a 'someone else poached MY parent' plot with the captain of the organ related pirates, if you really like the idea of that plot.

Having someone else steal away both Flashy's mother AND father is too much drama for me. I'd rather biomom be either a random civilan or a D
>>
>>3406627
>>Got it. So what's happening with that Mr 11 guy?

Oh I'm glad you asked! The reason is simple!
We are a descendant of an old branch of the celestial dragons that no longer have protection and thus if our bloodline was revealed people would try to kill us!
>>
>>3406627
>>Got it. So what's happening with that Mr 11 guy?

I'd say don't make up a story at all. Either Fop will discover Flashman is actually a guy on his own when he gets too curious, or he'll just fill in the blanks himself.

Plus if we make up a big yarn on purpose he'll just feel betrayed that we actively lied to him when the truth comes out. This was the confusion is all on his part.

You whip out a mock salute. "Got it. So what happened to that Mr 11 guy?"

Smoboss scowls over the crunch-crunch of popcorn. "He's down in the brig. Local base wanted to keep him, but there's no way of knowing if they're in Baroque Works' pocket, do like hell they will. They can make do with the Whitebeard spy and the rest of the prisoners we dropped off."

"Might not get anything out of this one," Klaus notes, manic grin having dulled to merely an amused smile, as he dips hand into his half-empty tub. "He's not too high-ranking, so I doubt he knows any more than what Igaram told us."

"Who's Igaram?"

"... Curly."

"Ohhhhhhh. I didn't know he had a surname."

You smile politely at Smoboss and the growing fire on his desk (which he lights a fresh cigar off), because you're leaving his office without a single punishment or even having him excessively mock you.

This is pretty much the optimum outcome.

You head put on deck, ignoring the pieces of popcorn aimed at your back as you close the office door behind you.

FREEEEEEDOOOOMMMMMMM.

It smells like... not getting extra duties.

The sunset is beautiful, an orange glow still lighting the sky, though the dock is quieter than before. Quite a few ships have left by now, you see, ones that were only here for the tournament.

As for the White Mist, you'll be heading out in the early morning, off to Alabasta (and Garp... guh). That should be about four to six days away, depending on the weather.

DC too high, auto-fail.

>shigi sword

You return to Tashigi's cabin, drawn by the alluring presence of swords. By which you mean you want to see this fancy meito that's caused you so much trouble.

Tashigi, being a woman who understands a worthy appreciation for weaponry, is only too happy to show it off.

Kashu, a katana, one of the fifty Skillful Grade swords. It's apparently better quality than Shigure, Tashigi's sword, although Tashigi's of course insistent that she's not looking to replace her treasured katana.

Kashu will given to some Marine swordsman no doubt, once Tashigi finds someone she considers worthy. You spend nearly an hour cooing over the blade with her, discussing styles and types of swords (and learning far more terminology and history than you originally knew).

For a guy who's pretty good with swords, you realize you don't know a great deal about the swords themselves. Klaus' lecture on forging them was educational by itself, but Tashigi's another fount of obscure knowledge that might stop you looking like an idiot in future.

Maybe.

It's a pleasant way to spend the evening, even if the later meal in the officer's mess is spent in constant terror of Fop saying something suspicious.

All in all, you're kind of pleasantly, suspiciously pleased that Renaisse turned out safely, as you go to sleep that night.

You gotta admit though, it is pretty interesting how the goofy, low ranking non combat officer ended up developing a pretty depressing backstory and motivation.
>>
>>3406904
It's One Piece, everything is angsty if you dig deep enough. Which reminds me, I've nearly finished Smoboss' backstory.

>disappointing, no whitebeard raid on the local hq

"A few options today," Klaus tells you the next morning, as the ship gets underway. "We can work more on your metal cutting, get it more reliable for combat use - or we can work on your kami-e, or that Billiards move. Ooor I can start teaching you my own style, if you want. I'm in such a good mood today, prettyboy, I'll let you choose."

His smirk tells you exactly why he's in a good mood, but as long as he doesn't start calling you 'princess' in public, you don't care.

By the way, if anyone has any questions (maybe about what would have happened if you'd made a different choice somewhere along the way, or something), feel free to ask. I'm in a 'what if' kind of mood.

For example, fun fact, Klaus actually won the Renaisse duelling tournament one year, back when he was in the Marines. If he'd come along with you, he'd have been recognized as a past winner (and maybe even entered again, if you pushed him).

If you'd said the orphanage was awful, I'd have checked whether you wanted to change things so it really was kind of bad, or whether Flashy was exaggerating because of dumbass kid memories, or if he was just straight-up lying.

Whichever the case (although it being a blatant lie would definitely have had me writing Flashy as more socially manipulative and cunning in future), it would have upped Smoboss' sympathy for you (and the protectiveness that he pretends doesn't exist). You might even have got a hug earlier than it happened! As it was, Smoboss was mosrly relieved and you still got emotionally closer to him anyway.

If you'd made it sound legitimately abusive rather than just 'it really sucked and I hated it', he would have also been seriously pissed off and making a few calls. Which depending on whether it was the truth or not, may not have gone very well for the orphanage.

As for Crocus, it actually went pretty well! You pinged his interest (and in such a way that he started thinking 'D'), and convinced him that Smoker et al are some of the good ones. He's obviously not 100% trusting or anything, but you developed a good foothold there.
Amusingly, you're actually going to be getting a call from him in a few days, when the newspapers have a small article about the latest winner of the Renaisse duelling tournament, so look forward to that.
As for what Smoboss did/said... that'll remain a mystery for now. But let's just say there was some interesting progress made that I very much doubt you'd guess.

>>3406953
Forgot to say about orphanage, if it has been seriously bad, I'd ask for a vote on what exactly happened. Starvation? Beatings? Locked in a cupboard regularly? Resulting behaviour would vary on what the abuse was, much like the general emotional neglect has led to Flashy being kind of a clingy, attention/affection-starved social actor/chameleon once he's figured put what people want from him and how he can make them approve of him.

>>3406939
They're further in the Grand Line than the Strawhats, not Supernova kind of big, but not small names, either. You had the possibility of joining them either willingly or by being drunkenly kidnapped, but people seemed more interested in drunken shenanigans and photo-taking, so it didn't happen. They'll make another appearance eventually.

>>3406932
I'd have done another roll to see if you met mook crew, a named character, or Law. Then you guys could decide if you recognized them as a pirate, and would either have had a fight or a conversation (and potential shenanigans), depending.

>learn family style from swordpapa

"I want to learn your personal style." The a answer spring out immediately, so definite that Klaus actually pauses in surprise.

"Really? Not Billiards?"

"Nope."

"Huh." He looks at you for a moment, then shakes his head. "All right. This style is something I developed myself, and there's not a single living person but me who knows it. So before we begin, let me make this absolutely. Clear."

He steps towards you, eyes narrowing and face hardening, and you can't help but feel a prickle of DANGER-DANGER-DANGER up your spine.

He bends slowly down, face just a few inches from yours, and somehow you just KNOW if you move a fraction of an inch, you're going to be in for a world, a galaxy, of pain.

"If you willingly teach someone, anyone at all, any move from this style - unless you have my permission, or I'm dead - I will personally hunt you down and make you suffer beyond anything you could possibly imagine."

You manage to avoid squeaking, and nod.

Klaus keeps staring into your eyes like a raging creepy serial killer for a few more seconds, before he leans back up, gaze dulling to his normal 'don't give a fuck' laziness. "I'm showing those lackeys of yours a few tricks, but you're my actual apprentice," he draws, unscrewing his flask. "My expectations for you are higher, and I'll teach you shit I don't teach others. So keep that in mind, got it?"

NOD-NOD-NOD.

The sense of of danger finally fades to nothing, and Klaus casually takes a drink. "Great! In that case, prettyboy, let's begin with the very basics."

And then he makes you wear a blindfold. Because what the absolute fuck?

You hold just one sword out in front of you, with both hands, and no Haki allowed (again, what the fuck).

And then - get this - you stand on deck and practice the same basic cut. The exact same way. One goddamn thousand times.

And Klaus refuses to even tell you the name of the style.

For a thousand goddamn strokes.

(+1 Cut-chan Awakening)

And after you've finished that?

You feel Klaus stand by you, his hand reaching out to grasp your wrist, change its angle, and move you through a precise slashing motion.

"That. Another thousand times."

Your arm is killing you. You keep your mouth shut and do it anyway.

>fopigo borgifop (or something)

Body aching but face free of blindfolds, you stagger first into the shower, and then, when dressed, off to find Fop.

As it turns out, he hasn't got too many duties yet - probably partly because Smoboss doesn't want to give him a nervous breakdown from culture shock too soon, but mostly because he's been set homework instead.

You never really thought about how much booklearning the Academy crammed into your head in a year, but Marines who work their way up to officer from the lower-decks tend to have been Marines for at least a few years before they go for the Officer Exam. Fop intends to take it in a few months, and while a royal education may be extensive, you doubt it includes naval regulations, flag signals, navigation, and exactly what piece of rigging does what, let alone how to reef or splice a sail, or what knot to use at what time.

You're pretty sure he's not going to make it the first time, but from the way he's got his head stuck in the books in the mess (otherwise empty at this time of day), you're not going to discourage him.

"Hey Fop," you say, breezing into the mess. "How's the sailing life treating you? And still wearing the mask, huh?"

Fop looks up at you, distracted from his reading. "It's... not bad so far, though it's only the first day. And yes, although you foreigners may not consider it indecent, all these bare faces are somewhat..." his face flushes slightly as he struggles to find the words.

Yeah, he tried not to look at your upper-face too much during the conversation yesterday, and he kept avoiding people's faces all through the evening meal, too. It was kind of funny, honestly.

You give him a thumbs up. "It's cool, you'll get used to it. Or die of embarrassment, whichever."

"... Thank you. Regardless, I have the rapier I promised you in my cabin, if you want it later."

YES

Uh. "That sounds good," you casually say, already fantasizing about giving it a name and making it properly yours. "All going okay, then? No-one giving you a hard time?"

"No problems thus far," Fop confirms, giving a small, pleased smirk. "Officerhood will soon be within my grasp!"

"... It's your first day, don't get cocky."

"R-right..."

>hello fellow nerd

"You want any help with the book-stuff? I'll admit I'm not too hot with navigation, but protocol and regulation stuff is pretty much engraved on my brain."

Fop looks relieved, as he should considering the size of the pile of books he has. "That would be helpful, if you can spare the time, Ensign Flashman. These are a little..." He gives the books a look that suggests he thinks they might bite him. You feel both smug and delighted to be of use, which are odd emotions to combine, but still.

"Nah, it's no problem. Let me know when you want it," you tell him, before saying your goodbyes and leaving him to it.

Looks like he's settling in for now, although you have no idea what'll happen when he starts interacting with the 'commoner' infantry. Still, that's a problem for another time.

Next stop: grab the chocolate cigars from your cabin. And after that: find Mina. She's also reading, but it's a comic book hidden inside one of her study-books.

>a gift for papa

You peer around Mina's cabin door, not bothering to comment on the comic (compiled from some North Blue series) sticking out from her textbook. "Wanna give Smoboss something cool?"

That gets her attention. "... How cool?"

You hold up the box of chocolate cigars. "'Pictures of you with a jitte and smoking' cool."

"Do I get t'eat the chocolate?" Her eyes gleam as she asks the most important question.

"Some. I get the rest."

"Deal!" She bounces off the bed, grabbing her jitte from where it rests, and eagerly follows you on deck.

What follows is the most adorable photoshoot ever made, as she poses with a disturbingly-accurate scowl, two chocolate cigars clamped in her mouth and jitte ready.

The pair of you giggle maniacally, along with several infantry, who are only too happy to lend her their cap or scarf for a few more pictures. It's a shame you can't get Smoboss' jacket, but that would mean either dying or explaining why you want it, which would ruin the surprise.

(Photography +2!)

In any case, the chocolate cigars are all gone by the end. Sorry everyone else, you didn't bring enough to share.

>if something needs to be done, it’s worth being done by a small child

You perch yourself at a decent distance, camera at the ready, as Mina knocks on Smoboss’ office door, insisting he comes to open it rather than her coming in.

You’re too far to hear exact words above the general noise of ship and sea, but you can easily see the disgruntled face when he first opens the door, followed by confusion as Mina proudly shoves the photos up at him, then a twitching grin that he tries to hide as he realizes exactly what they are.

Naturally, you’re taking pictures of this, too.

Turns out a genuine smile from Smoboss isn’t as creepy as the fake-nice smile during the princess thing. Although you unfortunately can’t restrain the ‘awww’ that breaks out when he ruffles Mina’s hair.

Brows furrrow. His head turns to locate you, quickly homing in on you lying down on an upper deck, still taking photos.

Smoboss glares at you, but it’s too late - you have a picture of him smiling, and he can’t beat you too badly in front of Mina. Hopefully.

Shooting you a look of promised retribution, Smoboss directs Mina inside, probably to continue being nice out of sight of recording equipment. Cheat.

... You totally won this round, though.

At least your weapons don’t need sleep, the lucky buggers.

You head up to the deck, getting ahold of your balance, still rubbing sleep from your eyes as you approach Klaus. The rest of the deck is empty, but for a man up in the crow’s nest, and a few Marines doing a walking patrol around, who cast you curious looks as well as salutes.

“I’m here, against all reason,” you mutter, approaching the still-dark sparring area. Klaus is enough of an asshole to look bright and perky, despite the fact he usually looks ready to fall asleep at any moment, the dick.

Sighing, out take the proffered cloth and tie it around your eyes. Great. Now you’re tired and can see even less than before.

“Sword at the ready.”

Blade lifted, you let Klaus guide you a basic stabbing motion that you could probably do while 100% asleep, or possibly while dead.

“1000 times, no Haki. Oh, and I’m gonna be throwing stones at you while you do it. Picked up a load in Renaisse for this.”

“What?!”

“Yeah, don’t dodge ‘em, or you’ll start from the beginning. Begin!”

You grit your teeth, lunging the blade out in a stab, and try not to flinch as a stone - thankfully not too heavy - slams into your leg.

There’s no rhyme or reason to the goddamn pain-stones that hit your legs, slam off your hips, back, chest, arms. Klaus doesn’t aim for your head (small mercies), and you can tell from his footsteps what sort of angle they’ll probably be coming from (if not when or which body part he’s aiming for), but you still flinch and hesitate more than you’d like as the accumulated bruises start to sting and throb.

Plus, you’re still so fucking TIRED.

Whatever the patrolling Marines think, they don’t intervene. Good thing, Klaus would probably make you start over.

... you hate him so much right now.

Stab. Withdraw. Sta-ow. Withdraw. Your arms are burning, Stab. Withdr-ow. Stab.

“1000!” Klaus calls cheerfully, while you’re ready to collapse. “All right, one minute break, keep the blindfold on.”

You hear him picking up thrown rocks once more, while you let your arms collapse. “What... time... is it?”

“Just gone 2 AM. Five more hours until morning training!”

“... what.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll let you get a couple of hours sleep.”

“What.”

“One minute up! Okay, 500 lunges, and you’re done.”

>94, +1 ??? Style

Your legs are aching almost as much as your arms, thanks to physical exertion, general tiredness, and the stones that STILL KEEP SLAMMING INTO YOU DAMMIT.

At lunge number 212, though, something feels... different.

For an instant, it’s like you’re not even holding a sword, weight not so much familiar as nonexistent, balance and grip unimportant in face of the lack of anything in your grasp.

And then you pull back to resting position, preparing for lunge 213, and everything’s back to normal. Painful, for a start.

At lunge 500, you want to die.

“Not awful,” Klaus acknowledges, as you manage to yank your blindfold off with slow movement, sweat dripping down your back. “See you back here at 7am.”

“It’s... 3.30?”

“And?”

Fuck existence. “Never mind.”

“Good prettyboy. Now get lost.”

You stagger mindlessly off to sleep, lacking energy even to flip him off.

The hell do you think Klaus is teaching you, huh?

>67

You somehow manage to grab about three hours sleep, which is enough to take the edge off, but only the edge.

Klaus takes one look at you, looks incredibly smug (although back to his usual sleepy-lazy-asshole style) and tells you to pick your training today. Oddly, his style isn’t an option.

Whatever. You pick metal-cutting, and in your hazy, half-awake state, prepare to slice and dice some old blades and metal pipes that Klaus pours out from a massive bag. Some junk that would otherwise be thrown away, apparently.

(Metal-Cutting increases to B.2! At B.5, Swordsmanship will gain a +2.)

At 8AM, slivers of steel spread around the training area, Klaus finally calls a halt before you collapse, ambling over to peer at your shaking form.

“Hm. Maybe we’ll just go from twelve to two, tonight,” he allows, taking another drink. “Don’t want you actually dying on me.”

Despite how exhausted you are, you do manage to summon the energy for a scowl. “Smoboss is gonna be pissed off if you make me useless for regular work.”

That actually seems to give him pause. “You really feel that bad, prettyboy?”

“YES.” YOU DUMBASS, you don’t say.

“Huh.” Klaus scratches his stubble, looking honestly surprised. “I’m just trying to break you to pieces, not break you completely.”

You stare at him, bewildered. Is it your tired brain, or does that not make any sense. “That’s... Klaus, that’s the same thing.”

“No, it’s...” He pauses. “It’s complicated. But you need to stop being aware that you’re using a sword.”

The fuck.

“You mean like... that stuff about making the sword a part of myself?”

“Kinda. I mean, that’s useful too. This, though, it’s more about making your own sword.”

Yeah, no, what?

Klaus looks down at your blank expression. “If this were normal circumstances, I’d ask Smoker to let me drag you off somewhere private for a couple of weeks. Instead, I have to make do with a few hours here and there. It’s not... optimal.”

You sigh, feeling the horrible knots in your shoulders. “You realize if I’m in the medbay, you can’t train me at all?”

“Honestly... I think you might not be ready for my style. I didn’t even start to bring it together until I was a Captain.”

Theres a conflict of interest in Flashman with her, so even if she herself is kind of meh on her own, there is a huge potential in the story because of her, or something like that.

>klaus might actually feel bad if you died from exertion, how shocking

"I can handle it!" You're not sure if that's your stubborness or sleep deprivation talking, but it gets said despite that. "I mean, Garp would put me in the medbay anyway."

"... Please don't compare me to Garp, or I'll put you in a grave instead."

"Understandable."

Klaus sighs. "I'll try to go a little easier on you, I guess. Just tell me if you're getting too... close to collapse? Or near-death? Whichever. I'm trying to cram a few years of training into as short a time as possible, I can't say it's gonna be great."

You wonder how he taught his original students. It probably wasn't his own style, and... he probably didn't have the same personality, do you guess it was a lot easier on them. Not that you're going to ask, obviously.

In any case, you manage to grab a nap afterwards without anyone complaining about you missing your duties, so may be Klaus is being a little less asshole in the background. Maybe.

(Klaus' Style training slightly decreased in learning speed but made less dangerous/strenuous.)

The great thing about a nice daytime nap in your cabin is that it's close to Doctor Lighthouse's Haki book, which means you can wake up, drag it from your tiny bedside shelf, and read through the rest of it without having to actually drag yourself from the bed.

Mmm. Warm, comfy bed.

... Oh, right. Reading.

Whoever wrote this is.damn good at simplifying stuff, because things are slotting into place that you never quite figured out before, let alone the entirely new stuff.

(Haki book COMPLETE! Haki DC decreased to 61, effects of overusing Haki reduced. Range for emotion-sensing increased slightly.)

With a head stuffed full of shiny new knowledge, you drag yourself up and go to find Fop, and - most importantly - your shiny new rapier.

Naming remains open until Flashy ICly names his new baby, by the way.

>muh rapier

You enter Fop's cabin with less blushing from him this time. Apparently he's a little more used to this strange new world where people wander around without masks, and go into each other's cabins without Shocking Implications.

Plus, SWORD.

"Here it is," Fop says, half-proud, half-smug, as he carefully holds up your new companion. "I... wasn't able to get one from the treasury, which would have been best, but this is from one of Renaisse's finest swordsmiths. I told him you'd want one for proper fighting rather than competition duelling or ornamental purposes."

There's a beautiful leather scabbard with it, which is a great bonus, but the sword itself... You're not exactly an expert on quality, but even you can see the workmanship as you draw it.

It's not some famous masterpiece of history by any means, but it's clearly exceptionally well-made, even to your inexperienced eye.

You let out a low whistle of appreciation. "You really went above and beyond, even if it was just a bet. Thank you."

... Yeah, gonna have to beat that dumbassery out of him, sometime.

"I never used one. Are you up for a spar?"

Might be workable, either built directly into boots or on greaves. Depends on how heavy seastone is.
It'd make our dick kicking skills a threat to even logia, which is hilarious.

"We'll see about that," you say, with all the smug self-confidence of a guy who's pretty good at this whole swording thing.

Fop's eyes narrow in what you recognize as 'a man's pride being challenged'. You very much doubt he's going to go easy on you, princess or not.

Good.

The pair of you almost even compete in getting to the training area, your paces faster than usual.

"First off, I'll show you the general thrusts, and how they differ from a katana. Or, ah, a cutlass." Fop is obviously eager to get onto the sparring, tapping his boots impatiently as he holds up his own rapier.

IIRC we need more experience with more different types of weapons if we want some kind of all encompassing perk to fighting with anything that comes to hand, right?
>>
>97, noice. Malus downgraded from 22 to 10.

Fop runs through a series of graceful movements, not slowly, but enough for you to see them clearly. You already knew the rapier was primarily a thrusting weapon, but you've only fought against the one - from this distance, you can clearly see how each attack or defence is meant to target a particular area, or protect from a different weapon.

"Got it," you say, confident.

"Do you want me to go again?"

"Nah, I'm good. Let's spar!"

Looking uncertain, Fop nods, and the pair of you settle into position, rapiers en garde.

>Roll 1d100, best of 3. You get +34, Fop is +50.

eeeh, considering One Piece uses guns that SHOULD be muzzle-loaded going by the appearance, it'd make more sense to me for Flashy to have a custom blunderbuss - assuming you Anons were talking about a double-barreled shotty. If not, you can freely ignore my rambling.

Looks like it, just remember whatever word/code you used for whenever you want to use the roll, so we know it's you. You don't have to use it apart from that (unless you want to, I don't care if people want to namefag).

>>3410015
Tricky because considering weapon bonus you ONLY beat him because of Haki bonus. But because it was a nat100, that means it shouldn't be a close fight. On the other hand, it kind of feels like he's earned a badass spar with that 95, rather than an asskicking. Hmm....
>>
>>3410034
I say make it as equal as all hell, like he starts easy on us, realises oh shit she wasn't joking, and then we get put on the backfoot, have to haki, and back and forth
>>
>>3410013
Yeah I also vote against lin lin for what it's worth.
>>

Considering how much longer he's trained with it I'm fine with it being close. Experience has to count for something, though that 95 certainly doesn't hurt
>>

>>
>>3410034
You could make it a close as fuck duel (thanks to Fop's 95), with Flash only coming out on top because of reaching another level with his haki (courtesy of the nat 100?)

Since its haki that ultimately won it for us
>>
>>3410048
Maybe after we null our rapier malus, we should be able to adapt our fighting styles to most kinds of one hand swords.
>>3410062
Very classic, I like it.
>>
>>3410046
He's actually going to earn an extra +2 to his skill from a combo of his excellent roll and your bullshit one. Flashy's flinging moves at him that his fancy tutors never did.

>95 + 50 = 145 noice
>1fucking00 + 34 = 134 + 20 Haki = 154, wtf. Haki +1, DC lowered to 60.

(Rapier malus totally negated, folded in to katana and cutlass for all Swordsmanship.)

You calm yourself, burying the gleeful fantasies of beating Fop in two moves flat.

You bring your Observation Haki out, not the emotion sensing side of it, but focusing on the future moves that Fop will make.

And then, as he says, "Begin," you move.

You're fast. So is Fop. Your strength is pretty good. So is Fop's. Your endurance is solid. So is Fop's.

The pair of you clash an instant after starting, both on the offensive, Fop nowhere even in the vicinity of being polite and playing nice with the newbie.

Two simultaneous thrusts turn to parries, then meet again, slide against each other to lock at the hilts with a sharp clang of noise - you consider headbutting him, at this closeness, but Fop clearly gets a read that SOMETHING is going to put a hurt on him, and disengages, a graceful one-two step that forces you to turn with him or present a blind side.

Technically speaking, Fop is better than you. But you're a fast learner, more ruthless, less honorable, and have Haki.

Plus, he keeps calling you a woman.

As in the duel, Fop's potential paths are myriad - he reacts to your techniques with blinding speed, and you're juggling seeing what he'll do, and reacting to what he actually does.

It's annoying. It's also all kinds of fun.

The pair of you soon almost in a circle, swords sometimes lightly tapping as one of you moves to disengage quickly, other times clashing with a smash of ringing metal, as strength is used to smash the opposing blade aside.

You've already lost count of how many times the pair of you have struck out, been beaten back, not a single actual hit thus far, despite three long minutes of frantic action. Bscksteps and cold manoeuvring have taken you out of the sparring area, across the deck, the pair of you waving over and around coils of rope or other supplies in place on the deck, barely aware of the encouraging cheers or bets of the watching infantry.

You see a thrust to the chest-thrust to the shoulder-thrust to the bicep but each movement vanishes to turn into a elegant parry as you move to counter, eyes fixed on each other in concentration. You're vaguely aware of your pounding head, but as long as you don't look too far ahead and stay calm, it's manageable.

You're both wearing down slightly, but not enough to declare a winner. As one advances or retreats, the other keeps pace, rapiers darting to seemingly open spots that turn out to be feints, a limb or vital part carefully exposed for a few seconds to lure in a strike.

(1/2)
>>
The moment finally comes, less due to your sword skill than because of Haki. You see yourself tripping over something small behind you, feel the edge digging into your lower leg, see your vision tilt an and fall, enough for Fop's rapier to slice out and press itself against your heart - so before you touch the obstacle, you step-aside just a little, casually, like you're angling yourself to better hit at Fop's liver.

Then you step backwards and back to the side, Fop advancing to follow, eyes on you instead of the ground, too close to see what's there.

Fop trips over a damn bucket.

And to the chorus of cheers and groans, depending on their bets, you immediately step forwards and thrust your rapier to rest near Fop's throat, not quite touching in case he stumbles any further.

(Swordsmanship +1)

You grin. "I think I like this sword. Thanks, Fop." Then you sheathe your new, cute little kid, extending a hand to help Fop up, filled with the sheer, bubbly joy that comes from fighting someone that's technically better than you, not holding back, and that you STILL manage to beat.

Maybe one day you'll kick Tashigi's or Smoboss' ass, but that's a way off.

Fop stares up at you with a look of confused bewilderment, realization slowly dawning into embarrassed comprehension of his loss. Against a 'woman' who only touched a rapier for the first time today.

"Right," he mumbles, tentatively reaching a hand out to meet yours, and letting you pull him back to his feet. (Damn, he's kind of heavy.) "That was... unexpected." His head is lowered slightly, expression obscured.

"You really pushed me, you know, I wasn't bullshitting with what I said at the tournament."

Fop manages to glance up a little, a hint of shame on his face hidden away behind relief. "Well, naturally! I've had the finest tutors, after all."

"You still lost me fifty beri!" The infantryman's cheerful yell breaks through your conversation, and you promptly turn to call an amused response to the assembled throng.

"Don't you guys have work to be doing?"

"Don't YOU?" Ah, a comedian, judging by the laughter from his friends.

"Screw off before I take a picture of you, Jenkins," you mock-threaten, audience giving small boos as they disperse before Smoboss can use his Captain-senses to detect them slacking.

"I really need to get in on those betting pools," you sigh, while Fop apparently works through his emotions over what's probably one of few recent times he's been beaten.

>What say/do, now?

Audience gone, you round on the ship's newest Petty Officer. "So! Since you helped me learn to use the rapier, do you want me to help you study for your officer exams? I have some free time now."

The answer is a definite yes, once you've washed up.

Fop's accumulated textbooks could probably sink a dinghy, and he needs a decent grasp of all of contents to be an Ensign. Technically speaking, it IS possible to get promoted on sheer combat merit alone, but that requires being a) a monster on the scale of a mini-Garp-to-be, and b) to have your superior give up on you being smart enough to actually pass the exams. Seeing as Fop isn't THAT terrifying, and has enough of a brain to actually learn things like a normal person, that's out.

Which means the pair of you end up settling down and trying to come up with a workable plan to memorize approximately a zillion pages of knowledge in the space of a few weeks.

Honestly, you think he's a little screwed. But hey, encouragement, right? Together you manage to draw up a reasonable revision plan and get started on geography, at least.

Finally, both your respective brains fried, the pair of you call it a day. Fop heads off to... probably do something actually wprk-related, while you head to your cabin to grab The Book.

Now you've finished with it... well, it's not USELESS to you, but you should probably get better before you give it a reread for any advanced details that aren't quite useful to you right now.

On the other hand, you're fairly certain this would be invaluable to anyone else on the crew.

Sure, Doctor Lighthouse gave this to you, but he didn't say you had to keep it to yourself.

Klaus already knows Observation. Tashigi and Fop... you're not quite sure if they're at that level yet.

Smoboss, though?

He's a damn CAPTAIN. If he's not ready for this, you don't know who is.

As a latin lover would say, he speaks whatever language you'd prefer.

I'd say Italian, maybe from central-southern Italy if you want a mix: it was spanish territory for a long time and it permeated the language somewhat, just as some arabic have been assimilated in very southern Italy. Really the language took from all over the place, and dialects and accents...

All three (french spanish italian) are Romance languages anyway. Very different accent tho, even just around Italy and...wait, i'm rambling. Ok, it's time to go to sleep. Night all.

Also I have to find a way to fit all 15 of our (future) crew in the damn picture, but I think I got it.

>>
>Not naming our sword Charlotte, both inadvertently referencing our mother, and referencing the fencer from Samurai Shodown

Anons, I am dissappoint.
>>
>>3410824
Is our mom Charlotte Linlin? I'm partial to Charlotte Smoothie as she was around 22 when dad died I think and seems to have at least some info in her bio. Plus she likes da swords. I don't know, I feel like for all she is the QM can do something cool with her backstory with our dad. A good blank slate option might be Charlotte Custard as well.
>>
>>3410824
No.

That's fucking dumb.
>>
I’m personally fine with our mom being just some nameless civilian barmaid or something. I think pops would have reservations against sleeping with either a named pirate or named marine.
>>
>>3411178
I've been reading the Charlotte theory and given it some thought - and honestly, I really, really like it. It's the best nominated origin for our mother so far, and it makes a lot of sense in terms of why she left us at an orphanage.

Big Mom is all about marrying off her children to secure political alliances. If one of her daughters had a son born out of wedlock, it would ruin her potential to be wedded off to a powerful suitor. So Big Mom would have probably had us killed before getting Pudding to wipe our mother's memory of us, then marrying her off to somebody rich and/or politically powerful. Knowing that this is what might very well happen, our mother would put us up for adoption, as hiding us would be our best chance of survival.

As for how this ties into future events. Big Mom finds out that we exist - and she also finds out about our father. Suddenly, she realizes that her grandson not only has a position within the marines, but most importantly, he has the blood of the Celestial Dragons in his veins as well.

And her attitude towards us flips from 'I want this loose end grandson dead' to 'I want this boy in my family almost as much as I want my Wedding Cake'.

Thus making the Whole Cake Island arc even more insane and awesome than it already was in canon.
>>
>>3410488
>But does the rapier speak with a French, Italian or Spanish accent?

Yes.
>>
>>3411430
These are some damn good points.

Just popping in to say that on the potential Charlottemomma front, a) his father definitely wouldn't have realised who she was, and b) I'm not sure whether it would be a canon character or OC. The mother could also be a child of one of the older kids - for example I mentioned earlier that Katakuri is 46 (48 post timeskip, forgot to do the maths), which means he could very much have had a daughter wandering around Paradise for a while.

In any case I really am liking the Charlotte idea, so while it's not guaranteed, it's definitely heading to the top of the mental pile.

>>3410788
If Coby can make the changes he did just from Chore Boy to Petty Officer in a few months, I'm sure Sunglasses and Hat can do good work too!

They're getting proper training now, fighting different opponents than random untrained pirate trash of East Blue, and gaining that special boost of fighting Harry Nat100 Flashman, the Jitte Kid, Sword-Freak Tashigi, and Alcohobo Klaus.

I BELIEVE IN THEM~
>>
>>3411672
Thanks, BHOP! I appreciate it!
>>
>>3411672
So the whole cutting through metal thing is a mental thing right? So in theory if Flashman practices and wields his gun with the same resolve he could have some crazy piercing rounds. Cause I'm imaging next time a big melee breaks out with all our fellow infantry on the field just Billiardsing a single bullet around the room off various peoples swords and dropping every mook with one pistol shot.
>>
>>3411672
As for the possibility of our mother being a canon character:

Flashman is 17, and his mother would have given birth to him at the age of 18 at the youngest. Meaning, his mother would be 35 at the very least in the present day.

Here's a list of all of the female members of the Charlotte family who are 35 and older (I grouped them in terms of multiple births, like triplets and quadruplets):

Compote, Age 49

Mondee, Age 47
Amande, Age 47 (Long neck swordswoman)
Hachee, Age 47
Effilee, Age 47

Custard, Age 45
Angel, Age 45
(Note: Triplet sisters of Charlotte Cracker, the unfortunately named Sweet General worth 860,000,000 berries)

Brulee, Age 43 (Mirror user and contender for best sister in the family)
Broye, Age 43

Mash, Age 40
Cornstarch, Age 40

Mozart, Age 37
Marnier, Age 37

Smoothie, Age 35 (Badass who hasn't had a chance to truly shine, dehydration powers, a Sweet General worth 932,000,000 berries and the second most powerful female in the Charlotte Family)
Citron, Age 35
Cinnamon, Age 35
>>
>>3411736
Shit, I forgot to consider the timeskip. All of the ages of the Big Mom pirates apply in the post-timeskip part of One Piece, while we're currently in the pre-timeskip section.

Flashman will be 19 after the timeskip, so his mother would have to be 37 at the youngest. So Smoothie, Citron and Cinnamon would be out as candidates (dammit, Smoothie would've been an awesome mom).
>>
>>3411736
Dear old daddy would be about 37 right about now.
>>
>>3411751
She could lie about her age
>>
>>3411754
Nice, thanks for adding that note in. He'd be twenty when we were born, so our mother would be roughly in the same age range as him.

I also did the math for the possibility of our mother being the daughter of another child, making Big Mom our Great Grandmother. It doesn't check out - if our mother was born to somebody, her parent would have to be eighteen at the youngest. Then that'd make our grandparent 36 when we were born, and after adding 19 years, that totals out to 55 as the minimum age post-timeskip. The oldest member of the many Charlotte siblings is Perospero at 50, so it probably wouldn't work.

...And after doing all of this hypothesizing, I realized a hilarious bit of irony. Flashman has grown up without a family and always wanted one. If it turned out his mother is a Charlotte, then he'd have one of the most gigantic and fucked up families in all of One Piece.
>>
>>3411760
That's a possibility I considered. But that'd be getting into teenage pregnancy territory, and I'm not sure that BHOP would be comfortable with that. So the other alternative, aside from all of the canonical candidates, would be an OC daughter.
>>
>>3411736
Flashman is 19 at the beginning of the the quest, and it's been a few months since then. In fact, if we're going by canon timeline and assuming Luffy set out immediately after his birthday, it's probably early June, so he turns 20 in about 6 months.
>>
>>3411736
I just realised, having a Charlotte mother would be hilarious. This relative midget coming from two giant parents.
>>
>>3411820
...Whoopsie daisy.
Time to recheck my math, thanks QM.

...

So his mother would need to be 39 at the youngest, in that case, so Mozart and Marnier are out as well. Leaving 11 canonical candidates, or an OC Charlotte daughter.

Also, I know I've posted quite a bit. But I had one last realization that I need to contribute to this debate.

If Flashman is indeed a grandson of Big Mom...

Then that means we get to have this guy as our uncle.

(Which explains our natural talent for Observation Haki.)
>>
>>3411826
The biggest angst and horror that Flashy would experience from the whole mess. "WHY AM I SO DAMN SHOOOOOOORRRRRTTT?!"

>>3411830
Yep, thanks for doing all that research. I was actually eyeing Amande as a potential mother last night. Obviously the human genes would be dominant there, and I want to do a reread of the Cake Island Arc to see if there's suitable stuff to pull from it, but I'm still open to pretty much any reasonably-aged kid or OC. As a bonus, twins and triplets seem to be common, so an OC could slot in pretty easy as either a loyal or runaway twin/triplet.

Also as a plus to the Charlotte theory, it would explain why Flashy keeps eating ice cream and candy, and drinking fruity cocktails. GENETIC SWEET TOOTH.

Wait. He probably didn't have much sweet stuff at the Academy, so he was weak... But then he got to Loguetown and started having more sugar, which gave him power-boosts and unlocked his potential! You got a nat100 in rapiers a day after eating chocolate cigars and ice cream! I'm a genius!

It's not much, but it confirms two things: first that she was young, or at least looked young, and second that she was 'apparently really hot'.
Cross-refencing with >>3411736, then if she is a Charlotte, and if we accept that the minimum age required puts Mozart, Marnier and anyone younger out of the running, I think we can cut the possibilites down to maybe 4 or 5 at most unless we go for an OC. So, about half what we had before.
Amande, Hachee, Custard, Angel and Broye.

"How'd you like Smolboss, Smoboss?"

Smoboss smirks around two cigars as you bounce on in, shoving a stack of paperwork in your direction. "It was good, brat. Almost as good as having you fill out these damn forms for me."

"I'd complain, but we both know I enjoy it," you admit, flicking through the top sheets. Looks like the usual stuff, no big deal. Although why there's a confirmation of delivery for a harpoon gun, you don't want to know. Hunting sea-kings?

"One of the bizarre things about you that I actually approve of," Smoboss agrees, obviously in a good mood. You notice there's a picture frame on his desk now (a personal touch that isn't rocks or cigars? Incredible!), but you don't risk peeking at it. You have a suspicion you know what it is, anyway.

Here comes the real kicker. While leaving through the paperwork, you casually ask, "Hey Smoboss, wanna learn Observation Haki?"

He raises an eyebrow at you. "You think I need it, brat?"

Reasonable for Smoboss, but you're hardly the only one on the ship who knows it. "You've never asked Klaus?"

Smoboss pulls a face, amusement vanishing. "Brat, you know why he learned Observation, right? So he wouldn't get... tricked again. There's a load of bullshit history packed into it for him, I never felt like poking that wasp nest."

Oof. Ouch. He did say that he'd teach YOU Observation, although admittedly, you've never pushed it - you're pretty sure you're doing all right, between the book and using it in combat.

"Well," you say, deciding this calls for an immediate subject change, and pulling the slim notebook to slide it across Smoboss' desk, "TA DAAAAAA~"

Your Captain picks it up and flicks through, interest obviously rising. "Where's this from?"

"Doctor Lighthouse gave it to me. I'm pretty much done with it." You shrug.

Smoboss pauses. "The lighthouse doctor. Seriously?"

"Yup! Klaus says I awakened it before then, but the book's been pretty good at explaining stuff. It also handles activating it in the first place though, so it should be fine for you and whoever else."

Hand rubbing his forehead, Smoboss sighs. "Not really the issue. And I can't believe he didn't - fuck. Fine. As long as it's all right for other people to use."

"He didn't say otherwise, and it's mine now, so... yes?" You give the paperwork another look through. For most people it would take a day or so (and for Smoboss, a week). As for you... maybe a hour.

Bossman rolls his eyes. "I'll give it a shot, brat. I have other things to do, though."

"Like chasing after pirates who've already left your jurisdiction?"

"... Do you want a shot at Roronoa or not?"

You can't help but wonder. "... Do you really WANT to be back in Loguetown, bossman?"

He scowls. "What does THAT mean?"

"Well..." You try to piece your words together. "You usually say that the pirates in Loguetown are weak. And there's obviously way more dangerous ones in the Grand Line. I mean, I know Loguetown is an important place and all, but I guess I kind of think of you more as preferring to get out and take the fight to pirates than waiting for them to dock for supplies."

There's a brief silence as Smoboss tilts his head back over the chair, scowling at nothing. "You'd be right."

>it's a mystery

"So then... Why do you want to go back?" You can't help but ask, almost plaintive, though you're not even sure why. "Can't you ask for a reassignment or something? To a more active role?"

Smoboss rolls the cigars slightly around his mouth, looking utterly frustrated. "Spite."

"... Spite."

"I never said it was a good reason."

You fix him with a dull stare. "However much you're pissing people off by staying there - and how that works, I'm not even gonna ask - aren't you just kinda screwing yourself over more?"

Tilting his head forwards once more, Smoboss glares at you. "I think I prefer it when you're being a dumbass."

"I think I prefer it when you're not deflecting."

"Screw it," Smoboss mutters. Then, louder, "I do a damn good job in Loguetown. It was a pirate nest before I cleaned it out, and that's all anyone ever expected it to be, after Gold Rogers kicked it there."

"And despite that, if you were assigned there to keep you out of the way..."

'It worked' goes unspoken.

"Shut it, brat."

But not unheard, apparently. You fold your arms and keep your mouth pointedly closed, which Smoboss enjoys for a whole two seconds before he groans in annoyance.

"I might get a reassignment. Some time. Could bring it up with Garp, I guess."

You grin. "Wow! The Strawhats stole your complacency. Not sure what the sentence is for that one."

"The sentence is that you get my boot up your ass," says Smoboss, which is totally unfair to your innocent, non-pirate ass. Then he drums his fingers on the desk, sitting up properly, not quite looking at you. "Sit down, Flashman."

... He just called you Flashman.

Huh.

You settle down in the chair opposite, atmosphere suddenly different in a way you can't quite place.

"Assignments aside, I've been thinking about... the future. Plans."

Uh oh?

"I want your opinion on something."

>it's family drama time

He's asking YOU for an opinion? Either he's finally snapped, or he needs advice on something you're an expert in, like... causing trouble? Paperwork? Eating junk food? Fingerguns?

Doubtful.

In any case, this calls for Serious Mode, as painful and mentally-taxing as that is. You try to sit a little straighter and give off the air that you're actually, y'know, competent. And stuff.

"Alright Captain," you say, slightly more formal than your normal chirpy, casual tone. "You've got my attention, how can I help?"

Smob- no, Smoker, nods slightly, face still... how could you describe it? Not blank. There's a faint intensity there that belies it.

"I'm thinking of asking Mina if she wants me to adopt her."

>>

Supporting this. She's pretty much already like an adopted daughter. Bossman was even the one to actually find and rescue her. We thought she was a pirate or something... If she doesn't already think of bossman as a father figure, I'd be surprised.
>>
>papaSmo??? no papaSmo???

You stare. "Well, she lives in the base -
or on the ship - mostly eats in our company, looks up to you (and obviously me) and you train her. Boss, I think you already adopted her."

His gaze is still a little intense, though perhaps just a tad softer, although his voice is almost interrogative. "I meant with actual paperwork. Legal shit. But - you think it's a good idea for her? Even if I'm not assigned to a base any more? Even reassigned to more active duties?"

>Bossman, that's between you and her. I'm not sure how my opinion even counts, here.
>Logically, I guess she'd be safer in Loguetown than sailing the Grand Line, or whatever. You just have to decide if that's a sacrifice you think is necessary.

But she is being trained with the Jitte for a reason, right? She's surrounded by a whole bunch of people who love her and are strong enough to protect her. At the very least, I think we can say that our experiences make us favor her being with her family regardless of the situation.
>>
>>3413577
>>As an orphan myself, I'm pretty much always in favor of a kid getting a family. It's a weird situation, but who cares?

>>Bossman, that's between you and her. I'm not sure how my opinion even counts, here.
>She would be safe in a small, quiet town somewhere. A simple life, with other people who would love her. But is that what SHE would want? I feel as though we're the first family she's ever had. We saved her from slavery, Captain, we pulled her out of hell. You, me, Tashigi, Hat and Sunglasses, Klaus, we're all she's got.

>Sure, the life of a marine isn't safe. But honestly, and in all seriousness, we're badasses. Led by Captain Smoker, the White Hunter, scourge of pirates everywhere. And you've seen her with a Jitte, she's a prodigy. Plus a Devil Fruit? Give her a few years under your tutelage, she'll be ripping apart Yonkou singlehandedly.

>Off the record, sir. You'd make a great father. If you weren't dad material, you wouldn't be asking all these questions and second-guessing yourself as a candidate. She looks up to you, she cares about you, and she knows that you feel the same way about her. She'd be lucky to have a guy as cool as you for a dad. Forget a small town in one of the blues, one of the safest places on the Grand Line is right next to you.

You snort. "You do realize I've started calling her Smolboss? I think you'd be a great parent for her. Besides, as an orphan myself, I'm pretty much always in favor of a kid getting a family. It's a weird situation, but who cares?"

Heaving a sigh, your Captain settles back in his chair. You're not quite sure whether it's a sigh of relief or, weirdly enough, frustration. "All right. The reasoning's clear enough, brat. I'll ask her."

You nod.

"... Now help me with all this damn paperwork."

Guuuuh, 2 AM. Going to sleep, thanks for playing!

Also kind of surprised only three people are backing a bit of jealousy, Flashy is surprisingly selfless in this respect.

Smoker was also terrible at a couple of things, and Flashy was painfully oblivious, so that was amusing to me. New thread sometime tomorrow, and hopefully a chat with Doctor Lighthouse!

Not really to make Flashman selfless on my part. I see the situation as more like Mina being officially adopted into the family that Flashman himself is a part of. If it was to a group of people that Flashman wasn't already latched on to, I would vote for jealousy.

Also, she's only technically an orphan, considering her parent's are alive (and sold her into slavery in the first place, so we can treat them as functional non-entities unless we get a chance to kick them in the dick).

His shocking backstory will be revealed eventually. You will all be in AWE.

>>3414393
She and Smoboss know what Fruit she has, but as for Flashy, you’re just aware that she’s proooobably got a DF based on the seastone.

Gonna make a new thread, also going to be rereading Alabasta chapters because dear crap, it’s been so long. You’re completely kicking canon in the face via Garp and Igaram anyway, but I still need a background refresher.
>>
>>3415337
>His shocking backstory will be revealed eventually. You will all be in AWE.
Gonna be honest with you. Not looking forward to it, because I'm guessing canon is going to go there eventually and it'll be incredibly awkward for everyone involved if you already made up a backstory for him.
>>
>>3415337
New thread here:
>>3415361
Just archiving this thread now.
>>
>>3415363
Judging by canon speed, I expect Smoker’s real backstory to be revealed by Oda in approximately 316 years. That said, I fully understand the concern, which is why I’ve left him and Tashigi with no real backstory hints or whatever yet, just in case we get something revealed soonish. Hell, maybe it’ll always remain completely unimportant, and I won’t even have to ever bring it up!

If people would prefer him not to have one, I can say what I planned and y’all can vote on whether to go through with it or not. It’s not plot-important, and there’s no other canon characters involved in it, so I can easily just scrap it.
