The goal is to leave Matilda’s dojo for the Calamity’s New Clinic as soon as possible, but the current state of affairs in the city isn’t making the task all that doable. With the army outside routinely scouting for any signs of movement from suspicious individuals (which, frankly, you don’t know if you fit the criteria), you are having a hard time deciding on how to go about this.

Yukika proposed to pretend Amelia is sick and simply ask the nice soldiers if they could be escorted to the Clinic, with you invisible while this happens. It’s definitely a good idea, and your sister isn’t rejecting it at first glance.

Even so, you can take some time to think of a better one, one that will raise the chances of you not getting shot!

Not only will the longer you stay here the higher the risk builds up, but you’re worried about everyone else. Clinics and hospitals were supposed to be untouched by the Crimzone. If the army was prepared beforehand about the light beams, then they must know about that too. What could have happened over there since you left the place…?

“Meh, I’ve heard and done worse plans than that.” Your little sister responds with a loud yawn, bringing you back to the problem at hand. “What do you think Johnny? Any better ideas, or is this the one?”

What’s the plan here?

>Go with Yukika’s plan. It’s straightforward but the soldiers could react differently.
>Have Saraswati fly up and scout out movement patterns to make escaping easier!
>Find a manhole and bust into the Pokyo Lokyo sewer system! They’ll never know!
>Write In.

Votes:

Votes are counted until 25 minutes have passed. This rule doesn't apply to the last reply of the day.
Votes that require a dice roll are counted until 15 minutes have passed, so we can speed up the process. Rolls are counted until 10 minutes have passed, so be prepared!

(NEW) Dice Mechanic:

We always roll 1d100s!
Since most people weren’t happy with the system of averaging top four rolls, we’re using best of 2/3/4 depending on the attribute a prompt requires. If Johnny is a genius and it’s a Knowledge based roll, he gets more rolls (Max. 7)! If he sucks, he gets less dice (Min. 2)!

When asked for rolls, I will specify how many you’re going to get. Rolling begins after it’s asked.

Rolling over a 95 is a critical and ignores all other rolls! In the same vein, rolling 5 or under means a critical failure (only for hard rolls and above).

The difficulty of the roll is tied with the effectiveness of the action. In other words, the harder the option the better the result!

Don’t forget that at the end of the day, this is a story-driven quest! What the prompts are describing is more important than the difficulty of the rolls, for results in a fight.

Again, rolls are only counted when they are posted within ten minutes of being asked, so watch out!

“I think it’s a neat idea, but we need to scout out the soldiers’ movement patterns for an easier escape first. Can Saraswati do that?” You need all the information you can get.
Amelia starts staring at you. “Yeah, we’ve done that before under… not-so-great circumstances.” She blinks a few times, then shakes her head. “It’s a little draining, but I’ll be fine. Let’s head to the backdoor, entities can’t go through walls.”

Yukika nods to your sister, and the four of you walk to the back end of the dojo. Opening the door, you peek outside to make sure the coast is clear. No footprints in the snow, no signs of anybody having been here since the soldiers left, nothing. Once you shoot her a thumbs up, Amelia summons Saraswati by grabbing her foot.

“It’s adorable!” Yukika stares at Saraswati in gleeful awe.
If Saraswati had a human head, a vein would be pulsing on it right now. “Adorable?! You yourself met your fate at these claws not so long ago, spider-child. You would know well not to take me lightly.” Saraswati scoffs at Yukika as she shows off her non-intimidating paws, then folds her arms. A faint static crackle comes from her cloud, also glaring at Yukika with its single eye…

“Hehe, you’re getting used to being a bear.” Amelia isn’t smiling, but she laughs at her partner anyway. The bear glances at her host briefly, then continues glaring daggers at Yukika.

“Saraswati, would you be so kind as to help us?” You ask the little bear a bit formally, finding some kind of respect for her after what you two went through to stop Amelia.
“Yes, I’ve heard your request and I’m more than willing to help. The more cautious the better. I’m glad you’ve began taking this type of conservative initiative.” The bear is almost proud of you. Almost.

In response you just shrug, deciding not to correct her or anything. Let her think whatever she wants…

Now Amelia commands her bear to gain her bearings and she slowly starts rising vertically into the cold air. These mental puns are awful. You’re thankful your sister is bad with bear puns, or else your life would’ve been unbearable.

…God damnit.

“So how does this work? Are you able to see what she’s seeing?” Yukika asks your sister, breaking the snowy quiet.
“N-no… she’s telepathically telling me what she’s seeing.” What an underwhelming truth! Maybe you could try doing the same with Philonune sometime…?

Suddenly, your sister left arm violently jerks back! Immediately her other arm does the same, and she spits blood from her mouth! It happened so fast not even five seconds passed!

You rush over to your quivering sister and hold her before she can fall. “Amelia! What’s wrong?!” Checking her over, you notice her flame back on her foot. As you do so, you also notice the bloody glob she spat on the snowy backyard ground – the place no longer all-clear as before. The thumbs up you gave her not ten minutes ago is still fresh in your mind…

Whatever happened to her, it could have been worse. So much worse.

“My arm… It hurts…!” Amelia whimpers out between her hyperventilating breaths, snapping you out of it. Your little sister’s widened eyes dart back and forth from one arm to the other, occasionally shooting straight up to look somewhere above you.
“I’ll go for the first aid kit! Keep her steady!” Yukika runs off down the hallway.

Gently placing your sister down on the wooden patio, you take the moment to check her closer. There’s two swelling bruises on her left arm, but the other one looks alright. Nothing’s dislocated or Amelia would be screaming in pain. Probably.

“I… called Saraswati back.” Amelia shakes the foot with her flame on it. Her forehead and neck is breaking out in a cold sweat, but her breathing is starting to calm down. “…She was attacked by… a laser beam. Three hits. Someone must have seen her…”

Wait, does this mean the army is going to check the area soon again? Or a completely different enemy searching nearby, sensing a target?

What will you do now?!

>Wait for Yukika to treat your sister, then go with the dog girl’s plan. Your sister’s injury would make seeking help legit.
>Wait for Yukika to treat your sister, then go with the sewer escape. The enemy knows you’re in the area, you cannot stay.
>Wait for Yukika to treat your sister, but stay put and don’t do anything rash. They don’t know your exact location, right?
>Go outside invisible and check the immediate area yourself. Maybe the bastard who did this to Amelia is still out there.

There's so many houses and apartments in this city, and Saraswati wasn't flying EXACTLY over the dojo house. That might have bought us time, but we need to get out there and find answers. Nobody laserbeams our sister and gets away with it.

Yukika appears with the first aid kit. She looks at your sister then back at you, hesitating.

“Please help her out. I need to go investigate what happened.”
“B-but Amelia is—”
“I’ll be fine… You know what you’re doing, r-right?” Amelia reassures Yukika then drops the act in a second. About what you expected from this new her.
Yukika nods. “If you tell me what’s wrong, I can.” The dog girl starts tending to your sister.

There’s nothing else you need to say, so you move away to leave…

“Johnny, just a quick check and leave. Don’t do anything stupid, please?” Amelia’s tired voice begs you from behind. Wordlessly, you nod at her and turn yourself invisible.

“He probably can take down whoever did this to you, you know?” Yukika believes in your abilities.
“...Not worth the risk.” You sister still doesn’t, for other reasons.

Without wasting any more time, you start walking by the side of the building out to the front. Damn snow still keeps your footprints…

Now that you’re at the front of the house, it hits you that you forgot to ask how far Saraswati went in her little scouting mission. She could have been straight above the house and made it an obvious target, or been away a block or so. It could be the difference between being caught and slipping by this unknown enemy for all you know…

Either way, you walk a street away to where you hear more ruckus, and see a group of soldiers hauling ass. From the few words you hear carrying to you, they are raiding other key locations roughly five blocks away from your position, and… away from the Clinic! This can’t be mere coincidence – whoever has an entity that uses some sort of laser beam is working for the government, and they must have told the soldiers where the bear was when they shot her! Inadvertently, Saraswati baited the soldiers away from your goal and towards completely unrelated buildings! She was that important of a target to them, huh?

Streets look empty enough from here that you could chance this path to the clinic and sneak there with the others. The soldiers will eventually reach this place again though, so you don’t have any time to lose…

What’s your next move?

>Get back inside the dojo and tell the girls you’re going to the Clinic! Your sister will have to manage the pain, maybe if she’s hurting as much – she could call the bear for a faster transportation.
>There is someone with a laser sniper entity out there. You need to get farther away to check where he is. The large concentration of soldiers is a few blocks away. Maybe you should check them out?
>Get back inside the dojo and report what’s happening to them. Amelia is too injured to move, and you cannot take the risk of moving right now. You’ll have to hunker down and prepare for anything…

Doesn't matter, to hit her on the back porch, they'd need line of sight. So what places gives such a view?

Amelia isn't a baby as mean as it sounds she's gonna have to suck it up, Saraswati's window of opportunity can only last so long
>>

They hit the bear and not Amelia, the damage just transferred because stand logic. Bear is flying in the air, a visible target, and the sniper dude used his entity to take shots at her. The soldiers might be a few blocks away, but they're trained to search buildings and do shit like this because it's a fucking dictatorship. Staying in the dojo is a death sentence at this point.

While maintaining your invisibility and keeping a steady pace, you rush inside the house and to the backyard.

“Girls! We’re leaving now!”
A flabbergasted Yukika stares at the empty spot you’re standing in disbelief. “B-but Amelia is not in any condition to—”

Amelia raises her hand to stop the ex-celebrity’s worrying. “Why?” Her eyes move, trying to figure out where exactly you are.

“Best window of opportunity. Saraswati baited the soldiers away from the clinic somehow.” You keep it concise and simple. “I’ll use Philonune to carry you, let’s go.”
“Yeah, I can take it. We’ll be toast otherwise.” You invoke Philonune and make him carry Amelia as safely as possible.
“Woof, woof!” Chewirton leaps on Yukika’s shoulder. You have heard of shoulder cats, even experienced the joy of having one accompany you for a day, but not dogs…

“Let’s move.” You signal both of girls, getting silent nods back in response. It’s a five minute run, what’s the worst that could happen?

After making sure not one soul was looking at your direction and dropping your invisibility, you all began to run to the clinic without looking back!

It felt like an eternity, but somehow you four plus Philonune managed to reach the clinic unscathed from the military forces – you had enough Athletic ability your success wasn’t even in doubt! Uh… you didn’t notice until now, but you were holding Yukika’s hand while running this whole time. She didn’t seem to have noticed either… It’s kinda nice…

Anyway, there are some familiar faces waiting for you at the lobby!

“Amelia! Johnny!” It’s Henry! He leaps from his chair and rushes to the doors at you. “Who is this, by the way?” He stops and points at Yukika, who’s now huffing less from exhaustion and more from being offended, probably from not being recognized. Guess you have to want attention to a degree to become a Youtube star, huh…?
“Meow!” It’s Bradford Jr. too! He’s on Henry’s shoulder, being the only person willing to handle his weight.

“Johnny? Amelia? Yukika?” It’s Nurse Calamity as well, all smiles! “You’re alive!”
“Amelia needs medical attention…" You tell everyone, as if seeing Philonune carry your sister and her mouth still being a little bloody wasn’t enough.
“My arm is turning in ways I didn’t even know it could.” Amelia grunts in obvious pain, trying to move to show it. “It’s not so bad now though”

In the blink of an eye, multiple clinic personnel bring out a stretcher for your sister and they start carting her off to another room. You try to follow, but Henry tells you off – he wants you to report back to Nina first. Yukika told you not to worry, she would stay by her side the whole way. Unlike what anybody else told you, this gives you real comfort for some reason.

[Yesterday, June 4th, 11:02 AM]

Inside the Cult’s base hidden below the old 1-Plus toy factory, in the underground prison section. The limp bodies of both ex-terrorists Jaylene Larsen (Thug B) and Rhys Frye (Thug C) lie in front of a “victorious” WILDFLAME, now on his knees. The lone hero managed to defeat codename Strawberry, still unconscious after the fact. Not many who go against WILDFLAME can claim such a feat.

WILDFLAME, at this point in his life, has enjoyed many victories and suffered many defeats in his constant self-imposed struggle against the forces of evil. Yet, never has anyone sacrificed their own lives to save him… until today, where both ex-terrorists tried to stop Strawberry from finishing off the superhero in distress.

If those two hadn’t thrown themselves in harm’s way at the critical moment, WILDFLAME’s loss would have been a mortal one. Despite this, faced with two young teenagers cut down in the prime of their life, victory is a hollow and ridiculous notion.

It has been a few minutes since the heated battle concluded. WILDFLAME continues staring at the twin corpses, arms limp at his sides, his head still unable to comprehend what just happened. He didn’t merely fail. Those two weren’t just casualties in a bigger accident. They lost their lives saving a failure of a superhero.

He didn’t overcome the odds. He didn’t do the unthinkable. He couldn’t do the impossible…

Ultimately, he didn’t have enough determination to save them.

He couldn’t save them.

He’s no hero.

The not-so-mighty superhero cannot pry his eyes away from the sight… Rhys’ plead, now his last request, hangs heavy on the buff man’s mind: Save a man named “Oliver Watts.” At all costs.

“…Rest assured that I will save your friend, true heroes.” WILDFLAME almost chokes on his words, barely holding in his tears – but he does so anyway. His work here is not done. Not yet.

The grieving hero turns to the gaudy villainess. “Woman of evil, if you ever want to be welcomed on the path of redemption, you have but one task: save these two.
“Flame, Flame, Flame… Hehehehehe…!” Strawberry shudders on her spot, caught in a giggling fit. Ringing off the battle-scarred concrete and empty cells, it sounds just the slightest bit unhinged. “Don’t be silly! Just look at them; they’re already dead!” She starts to have another giggling fit, but stops with a pained grunt. Her injuries are too much to risk more gloating.

“Find a way.”
“Impossible.” The wounded gypsy girl responds without missing a beat.
WILDFLAME slowly shakes his head, pulling himself up on his feet. “Then there is no path of redemption for you. I’ll burn you and your sins to ash, woman of evil.” WILDFLAME’s phoenix partner Vehram comes out of his forehead, eyes full of flames like his ally.

“Fine, fine, fine. I’ll give it a shot. And stop calling me woman of evil, damnit! Name’s Sasha.”

“Your life is at stake, woman of evil. Don’t forget that.” WILDFLAME, in a stunning display of raw power, leaps through the concrete ceiling as if it was tissue paper!
“Tch… I’m good as dead, then.” Sasha sighs, dropping her ‘tough girl’ façade. She stares at the two unmoving bodies like WILDFLAME did, wondering what the fuck she’s going to do now. “I sealed my fate when I lost anyway… There’s no hope for me. No hope for any of us…”

Guess you’re leaving to Nina’s impromptu Command Room. At least she’s going to tell you what happened since you left. You seriously need to catch up on things anyway. You tell everyone to please be careful with your sister before setting off.

Back in the medical bunker labyrinth again! This place still looks like a maze to you, but you know your way around here now. No more getting lost!

Despite the place being the same as it was when you left it yesterday, something about it makes you and Philonune both feel uneasy… as if something wrong happened here while you were gone. More reasons for you to go meet Nina again!

You are in the mood of opening doors without knocking, so you do just that. The surprise element seems to be adequate for this situation, and it might help break some tension. Without hesitating, you barge right in! But it turns out the only one surprised is you, as Nina stands up with a bright smile on her face and tears trailing down her cheeks.

Seeing someone so glad to see you, to know you’re alive and safe… it gives you goosebumps.

Instantly, Nina grabs you and hugs you tight. How did she know you were coming here? Oh right, the cats have cameras and Bradford Jr. was there. Either way, you hug her back and put your head on hers.

“I’m here. It’s alright. It’s okay.” You pat her back, whispering.
“It’s you! It’s really really you! I’m s-so haaaaappy…!” Nina cries to her heart’s content. At least these are tears of happiness and not heartbreak. All sense of composure lost, your ex-girlfriend pours all her raw emotion out into your shirt.

It still surprises you every time you see anyone getting emotional for you. Part of you feels like you don’t deserve this…

“It’s alright. Everything is alright now. Amelia is here too.”
“I t-thought I would n-never see you again… Johnny… I couldn’t do a-anything to help y-you again… I’m just… I’m just…” Nina can’t stop the tears. “So sorry…!

“Please, you’re going to make me c-cry too… It’s all fine now. Trust me.” At least on your end.
Nina thumps you in the chest. “Stop that! You made me cry first!” She gets pouty. It’s always cute when she gets like that…
“But I’m a m-manly man, I can’t just d-drop tears every 2 seconds!” You stutter your voice to lay on the joke further. Judging by how Nina’s sobbing turned to musical laughter, it worked!
“Y-y-you’re so much m-more than just that.” Nina stops hugging and moves away, smiling brightly through her tear-stained face. “I-I’m being imprudent a-again. I’m sorry, you didn’t come here to comfort me, right? L-let’s start talking about w-what happened. Shall we?”

“GYAHAHAHAHAHA! Take that motherfuckers! Enjoy your vacation to Hell!” A severely wounded Rob Banks crows at the Police Station, now engulfed in flames. Blood pours from holes all over his body. Somehow, against all odds, he managed to defeat everyone inside that office – including gym teacher Brock McKenzie and Lise’s father Danforth Villiers.

“What the hell is this?! What happened?!” A police troop arrives, having returned when they saw the smoke rising over the station. The group is led by Roger Jackson (the retired policeman who befriended Johnny) who’s the one doing the talking. All of them are completely confused and more than a little mortified at the sight.

“THEY ARE DEAD! DEAD! DEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAD!” Rob Banks cackles in complete ecstasy. A child in a candy shop wouldn’t come close to the sheer joy he felt in this moment. “Now someone fucking help me, I’m gonna pass out or bust a nut… and I don’t know which is first anymore! GYAHAHAHAHA!

The mad police chief flops himself onto the snow, proceeding to make victory snow angels. Occasionally, he stops to loudly snort a handful.

“I didn’t come back from retirement for this shit…” Roger Jackson facepalms and signals the other officers to help their boss.

Nina invites you to sit on the empty bed before beginning your informative talk. She sits on the chair in front of her desk and moves it closer to you.

“I want to know if anything happened while we were away with Amelia. Phones are still down, and the bunker felt off on the way here…” Something definitely happened, according to your gut feeling.
“It’s not only the phones, the internet is down as well – the TV signals and the radios all remained shut down even after the Crimzone ended.” What?! Even satellite TV? Is that even possible? “With the cats’ help we found out the military is trying to find a Crystal Piece in the area, but their efforts have come empty. They will clear out to leave sooner than later. Communications will also be down until tomorrow. Leaving that aside, a lot happened in here…”

[You are slowly entering a flashback…]

[Yesterday, June 4th, 6:58 PM]

At Control Room A, Nina and Matilda are confronting Yu Yan after she pulled some shit.

“What’s your excuse? You disobeyed direct orders. Transgressions like this are unacceptable.” Matilda confronts Yu Yan, sitting across from each other.
Yu Yan waves at the air and holds her head up high. “Yeah I didn’t alert you all about her escaping, so what? It’s a huge skeleton monster going after him! Amelia is the only chance Johnny has to survive!” Apparently Yu Yan turned a blind eye to when Amelia snuck out of the building to go help Johnny. “Now lemme go already! I should be next to Nariko to calm her down instead of stuck here yelled at by you. You have all the cameras now, doesn’t that make you happy?”

“The problem here is that you didn’t only do that.” Matilda slams the desk with her palm. Nothing on her face betrays her anger. “You told her which cameras you were watching and planned an escape route for her. Now we only have four flame users here, and only one capable of fighting. Our mission is now in jeopardy thanks to you.”

“We’re fiiiiiiiine! We got the bad dude, right?” Yu Yan scoffs in Matilda face. “But it’s easy for you to let him die since you don’t really care about him, and you’re safe and sound down here.”

“You think I don’t care about him…?” Matilda looks down at herself, blinks a few times, then back at Yu Yan. “I do. Deeply.” The freelancer says in a sort of hushed voice. Her wonder doesn’t last for long though…

“…But an imbecile like you doesn’t understand he went out there and took the bullet for us, because he wanted to save every single one of us. And you are making his noble sacrifice pointless by throwing his sister out there to die for no good reason!” Matilda leans into Yu Yan’s face, not letting up! “How idiotic are you? And you tell me those two took you in as part of their family? You and your carelessness disgusts me.”

“Amelia is way more capable than what you think she is, dumbass!” Yu Yan barks back, refusing to give an inch!

Nina claps her hands to get their attention. “Calm down you two! What’s done is done. We need to go back to our—” A loud bang cuts her off.
Matilda’s fist is on the table in front of her. “Silence. You should be yelling at her as well. You’re our leader, act like one. She disobeyed a direct order and needs to be punished.” No-nonsense Matilda talks in an even voice, all her tranquil fury at the forefront.

“The thing is, I can’t really blame her. If you knew Amelia, what happened was a matter of time. She loves her brother too much to let him die. I believe those two will come back, we only have to believe in them.” Nina takes a breath. “…Now if there is any punishment to be dealt, it will be after today. Time is precious. I thought you called me here for something else that needed to be taken care of, not petty insults. Now if you’ll excuse me…” Nina is trying to maintain her composure, but she’s deeply affected by the events that have transpired so far. The pressure of the day is getting to everyone, her included…

Suddenly a call comes in from the speakers!

“Control Room A, it’s me Henry. Control Room B wasn’t respondin’ so… Eeeeh… There’s a big dude and a little kid down here asking for medical attention. Nurse Calamity said the big guy has a white flame and it looks pitifully small. What do we do? He looks pretty roughed up.”
“Uh… I’ll head there immediately. Give me one second!” Nina responds using Matilda’s headphones, much to the stoic girl’s irritation.

Nina not-so-quickly runs to the reception lobby! She finds Nurse Kata, Henry, and the two men Henry was talking about.

“Hey it’s you two! That homeless man and Twig!” Nina recognizes them from a long time ago.
“It’s 7W157! And I beg you, Titan needs some help! You can’t throw us out! Pl-Please!” The little kid is bawling his eyes out, clutching at a barely-standing Barry the Hobo.
“I’m not the type to decline helping another human being, Nina.” Kata has her mind made up. “But you’re in charge of this flame business, so it’s your call.”

“Let me think this through.” Nina walks up to Barry for a closer look. He’s in very rough shape, coated in enough blood that making out his expression is impossible, but he’s still up and breathing. There’s weird injuries visible on him too, reminding Nina of old neighborhood kids after birds pecked them all over…

…Marcus?” Nariko appears out of nowhere and looks at the big hobo man with wide eyes. “Is that you?” Nariko begins to cry for some reason. By this point, Nina thought she had no more tears to shed…

[End of Flashback.]

“Wait, you can’t stop the story there! It was just getting good, come on!” What’s up with this ‘to be continued’ crap?!
“Sorry, I need a sip of water.” Nina casually picks up a random-ass bottle from the floor. “Don’t get too hasty. He’s not the only visit we had yesterday, you know…”

No. No you don’t know. Why is she trying to be mysterious? Maybe a little payback for leaving the building yesterday? You do deserve that much, at least…

[Yesterday, June 4th, 5:20 PM]

If there is one thing you can’t say about B-WORM, it’s that he’s impatient! He has been holding his position for 9 hours now, refusing to abandon his post for anything! That’s how dedicated he is! It has absolutely nothing to do with the fact the behemoth a few feet away has effortlessly wiped everyone off the face of the earth! And to make it even better, the thing decided to make the Grand Hospital his own base for the remaining of the day! Oh joy!

But things have been quiet for a while, and it’s making B-WORM anxious. So even though he has seen many disgusting corpses being thrown around in front of him randomly, and he’s eager to know what the fuck is going on, he hasn’t moved to peek for a second. His unmatched patience is finally running thin! This creepy silence is driving him crazy! And actually talking to his boring-ass entity is going to make this decision even easier! Can you blame him? A little peek isn’t going to kill anyone, for fuck’s sake! He just wants to know if now after 9 long hours is the time to move!

He slowly inches his way towards the side of the couch, bends over so slowly he might imagine his bones creaking, and tilts his head so only one eye peeks out…

The behemoth is staring directly at him.

A monstrous man with a metal mask. Impassive. Unyielding.

He begins walking towards B-WORM, almost robotic in his steps forward…

He knows he’s that monster’s target now, but there is still a chance of escape…! He needs to move fast! The giant is blocking the entrance, so B-WORM foolishly runs for the stairs to the 2nd floor! A two-story drop should be easy to survive compared to this freak!

The behemoth isn’t slow by any means, and the gap shrinks smaller each passing second… B-WORM is too slow to outrun him…

But B-WORM didn’t stay idle for those 9 hours! His partner Dagon’s ability has been running the entire time, and he finally activates it!

Somehow, every object inside the room being to be pulled towards the couch B-WORM was hiding behind! For the first few seconds the pulling force is very gentle, but then it ramps up to something resembling a black hole’s gravity field! Chairs, magazines, potted plants… not even that implacable man is immune to this much concentrated power! He holds himself in place on one of the other couches, but how long can he keep this up?

Meanwhile, B-WORM is unaffected because he’s grabbing his partner. He stops running and watches his ability unfold with a satisfied smirk; he never had the chance to store it for so long! The behemoth human doesn’t have any tricks up his sleeve that could potentially kill him, that’s the reason why he remained hidden for so long – you cannot take anyone lightly in this war…!

But he thought wrong: the monster is starting to approach closer extremely slowly, resisting the energy pull! B-WORM looks thunderstruck for a second, then decides to continue running towards the second floor.

He’s halfway up the stairs when, with a loud cracking and tearing noise, the couch violently splinters apart.

With the couch broken and the pull ceased, the beast is loose! How could this happen? Why did his power stop?! He doesn’t know, and will have to die without knowing! Goodbye cruel world! He starts going up the stairs again, almost reaching the second floor landing…!

The demon is standing right next to him. B-WORM didn’t even hear his footsteps this time.

“DUCK!” A voice yells from the second floor. No time to hesitate, B-WORM drops to the floor and hears a whooshing sound above him followed by a heavy thump next to him. Opening his eyes, he quickly notices three things…

One: He’s not fucking dead.
Two: A new intact couch on the first floor, with the demon man’s legs poking out from under it!
Three: An athletic boy waving at B-WORM from the top of the stairs… someone better known as George Adams, the ex-member of Johnny’s school basketball team and Henry’s best friend.

“C’mon dude, run for it! Bastard won’t stay down for long!”
B-WORM nods. “Y-yes! Let’s go!” In moments he finally manages to make it to the second floor, safe for the moment.

But back on the first floor, the unstoppable man’s legs begin to twitch…

“Please get on with it.” You feel slightly annoyed at all this.
“S-sorry! Alright. That was the first part! But here’s what happened next…”

Nina explains that your team ended up accepting 7W157’s request and helped the big man – mainly thanks to Nariko’s insistence. Barry the Hobo’s real name turned out to be Marcus Sanchez.

Nina took Nariko to another room to make her explain her connection with the homeless man. Nina feels like you should hear the story from Nariko, but she basically summarized it for you in a few words:

Unlike other flames, white flames are more parasitic and inclined to want to take over their hosts. First they try to get on their partners’ good graces, then they make requests to help them with their ‘noble and just cause’ – the requests slowly becoming harder and more disruptive of their hosts’ lives. Once you either start declining them or start failing, they rapidly begin their takeover since their hosts already have everything ruined thanks to their meddling, leaving only an easy target. There is a point of no return when this process happens where it becomes only a matter of time, and white flames have this well-known among them.

Nariko and Marcus both reached this point separately, but they met shortly after on the internet. Nariko plead for help on a forum she used to frequent, and Marcus happened to see the post. They met for real afterward and found a way to stop the process together: using the help of a Judge entity. That’s when Marcus somehow found one; a man named Gerard Luther.

The two of them met with this man. Gerard Luther was optimistic about performing this process. Marcus wanted Nariko to take the chance first, but… Nariko didn’t remember what happened next.

You are slowly entering a flashback…

[Yesterday, June 4th, 7:32 PM]

“…I’m so glad he’s alive.” Nariko is having a bittersweet moment. Johnny is probably dead in her mind, but she’s glad to have her old friend back. “I owe him so much.”
“Then I don’t want to keep you waiting! I’m so sorry for dragging you here. You must be worried about him!” Nina plays the concerned adult part nicely.
“Yes… I am. But it felt nice finally telling someone this story. It all came back to me when I saw him… How could I have forgotten him?” Nariko is on the verge of tears yet again
“That doesn’t matter! Go and see him!” Nina smiles at Nariko and gestures at the door. The masochist leaves the room in an attempt to reunite with her buddy. Anything that could cheer her up.

[Yesterday, June 4th, 7:52 PM]

Nina is staring at one of her screens, the one showing Nariko and 7W157 looking at Marcus’s recovering body. They are staying three rooms next to Constance’s, inside the panic bunker.

“Sheesh… I need some water.” Nina searches for something to drink under the table. Then once she finds out there is nothing, she leaves Control Room B with a bottle and goes to the bathroom. “I’m going to the bathroom. Use the walkie talkie to talk to me.”

At the bathroom while filling her bottle with water, Nina receives a distress call.

“Control Room B! Control Room B! The bastards are gone! Kaz’s goons are gone!” That’s Yu Yan’s voice! That’s Control Room A! Oh god!
“Quick, inform everyone immediately! Bring everyone who isn’t in the bunker down here. Tell Lise and Neko to be alert.” Nina issues commands flawlessly, the operator practice paying off!

“Already done that, ma’am! The crazy bastards made it inside the bunker! T-They are going to Constance’s room! Fucking Henry, move your ass down here quick! W-Wait, Nariko! Don’t go down there!” Yu Yan talks rapid-fire.
“Tell Nariko to get back to her post! She’s in no condition to fight head-on!” She was too depressed to even bring her entity out! She can’t do anything! “I repeat, her condition is not enough for this! Back out of there!”

“Nariko! Please! Don’t fucking do this! That bastard has a knife! They… Holy shit!” Yu Yan goes silent for a few seconds, then yells at a frantic pace. “He’s taking both of them down! Go Titan! Fuck ‘em up! Go for their heads, just like that! …Oh shit. Oh no. That’s not good… Shit.” Nina hears Yu Yan gulping on the other end, then… “Wait, N-Nariko?! What the fuck?! Nariko! Yeah, destroy them! Yes! Yes! Yeah… All clear! Nariko got them down! Big guy isn’t looking too good though. Call the docs here, ASAP!”

Nina sprints to Control Room B after hearing the good news…

[End of Flashback.]

“...Marcus was wounded during the struggle. He got stabbed 14 times. Nariko was so enraged she cleaned house on them. Marcus… didn’t last an hour after the fact... His organs failed.” A gloomy Nina ends the tragic tale of Barry the Hobo… Err… You mean Marcus Sanchez.

After dedicating a minute of silence for Barry, it’s time to resume the conversation. “I don’t want to sound insensitive, but what happened next?”

“Nariko had a complete breakdown after hearing about Marcus’ passing. She was desolated in a way I’d never seen before. I had to relive Yu Yan from her post so she could help comfort Nariko. I had her stay with me in this room for some periods of time as well, so Yu Yan could have some breaks. Matilda took charge when I was unavailable.” Nina exhales hard. “Things weren’t easy… But we managed.” The stress you feel coming from Nina is almost physical in how it weighs on you too… “We had only three flame users available and two people to oversee the cameras. We were at our weakest in the entire day. It was the perfect opportunity to take us down…”

[You are slowly entering a flashback…]

[Yesterday, June 4th, 10:17 PM]

During the commotion caused by Marcus’ incident, nobody noticed the betraying little shit 7W157 helping Kazuchika Storgaard escape from his impromptu cell room and passing him a gun. The few clinic personnel told to guard the room as well as Boopies the cat were shot, and the camera was destroyed. Miraculously, nobody died from this.

The mad man and the idiotic teenager set off a smoke bomb inside the bunker and rushed Constance’s room without the cameras catching them. Both of them were wearing gas masks to protect themselves, and 7W157 was guiding him to Constance’s room! The lackeys’ incident from before was nothing but a mere distraction for this setup! The entire day’s worth of plotting was all for this moment!

“Neko! Lise! It’s all up to you! Save Constance! Kaz is still too severely wounded to do much!” Nina’s distant panicked yelling rang through the speaker on Bradford Jr.

How could this happen so fast? How could everything fall apart like this? Where did she go wrong…?

Nina watches everything unfold through Bradford Jr.’s camera, mortified. Neko hugs the wall next to the door, staring at it and silently daring it to open. Lise grabs Constance and shields her with her body, summoning Welimor to protect them. The entity can’t do much against bullets, but it’s the thought that counts.

(Note: Entities cannot appear on cameras, but for the sake of understanding these events, they appear in this narration.)

The heavy bunker door is kicked aside, revealing a gun-toting Kazuchika Storgaard! He locks eyes with his mesmerized target, their bandages mirroring each other perfectly, and…

A jagged finger slices clean through Kaz’s right hand, bones and all! The gun falls to the floor along with his harmless hand, and the madman falls to his knees, clutching his stump in a feeble attempt to stop the blood pulsing free. 7W157 leaps for the gun, but Welimor’s spirit guitar **TWANG**s straight into his head, instantly knocking him out!

“Take that, you PRICK!” The hysterical T_T Neko starts laughing in Kaz’s face, the same demented way she laughed in Richard’s face when she told him she let his brother die. One unspoken command later, Neko’s partner Bastet cuts the gun into quarters. “Oh? You wanted thaaaaaat? Well TOO FRICKIN’ BAD! Now sit there and keep bleeding until you die, freak!”

“Why are you imbeciles so determined to doom us all?!” Storgaard gazes at the fragments in front of him. The blood gushing from his amputated limb seems to slow down…
“Just go straight to hell with the rest of your family, freak!”
“Don’t talk about my family…”

“They are pretty close, right?” Neko leans in and pokes Kaz in the side of his head. “Hey, how far down do you think hell is from the bottom of the ocean? Maybe if you scream loud enough, they can hear how you failed them again!” The filthy NEET bursts into another laughing fit in eerie sync with her entity. It would sound annoying at any other time, but…

“I’ll fucking kill you. Mark my words… I’ll fucking… kill you all…” The fight goes out of Kazuchika Storgaard’s eyes as he falls unconscious again, perhaps never to wake up again.

[End of Flashback.]

After hearing this story, you have big doubts about Neko feeling guilty about what she did to you. Yeah you had some already, but they weren’t as big as they are now!

“…As soon as Constance woke up and heard about Osgood, she immediately removed Kazuchika’s entity and placed him in a coma. We didn’t even get a chance to interrogate him, though his bleeding stopped on its own. We have 7W157 and the weird guy who came in here with that damn Crystal Piece both locked up on the first floor. Other than all this, everyone is alright now.” Nina puts an end to this hectic tale! “The other bit of news is WILDFLAME arrived an hour after that, with a man in dire need of medical attention, and asked us to help the guy. Henry accepted before I could even get there. Then he left… That’s it.”

Your former teacher looks around the room intently. Trying to find something? “I need another sip of water…” Figures. You’d feel the same way after telling a story that long!

Your innermost instincts are telling you something important, something you cannot deny… Standing up and stepping closer to the teacher with the puffy hair, you start headpatting her!

“It must’ve been tough.”
Nina stays still with a funny-looking smile on her slightly red face. “It… really was.” Your ex-girlfriend closes her eyes and moves her head closer to you. “It feels nice to have some recognition…” She’s now smiling properly. Perfect. You cut the headpatting short though, as you want to continue this conversation. “I-Is it me or the temperature here rising a little?” Nina finds her bottle of water and takes a big sip of it, looking away from you and your cheeky smirk.

“Speaking of extreme temperatures, I need to report everything that happened out there, because I have some big news…” You show her the crystal piece you worked hard to earn. Ignoring how shocked Nina looks, you start your long tale…

You explained everything that happened once you left the clinic. Seioubo’s chase, Amelia rescue mission, Brahma and Saraswati’s power couple combo, the fight against the other flame users you managed to solo and win, Ka-Shing’s threat and accident, your encounter with Dudley and the promise of a future duel, staying at Matilda’s dojo, Chewirton being adorable, the Judges’ message, Amelia getting shot (which you were reassured she would be fine)… and finally how you got here!

You left out the parts with Yukika in their entirety because your ex-girlfriend is sitting right here in front of you.

That, and you want to keep this secret close to your heart, for reasons you still can’t quite put into words…

“Woah… What we did here pales in comparison to all that!” Nina is pleasantly astonished. “You’re amazing!”
“No need for flattery.” You chuckle at this, going along with the joke.

“No Johnny, I’m 100% serious.” Nina is really in awe. “I don’t think you want to hear me sing you more praises, right?” You wouldn’t mind, but she doesn’t need to know that! “So what are you planning to do with the piece?”

“What do you mean what am I planning to do with the piece? You’re the leader, aren’t you?”
“And as the leader, I think you and Amelia should decide what to do with them on your own. You’ve earned them.” Nina smiles warmly, then goes back to her serious gaze. “…I know that face. You haven’t thought this through yet, have you? Take your time. Our mission here is to keep Constance safe. As long as we don’t forget that, you don’t need to rush it.”
“…Thanks.”

“Don’t thank me! We’re in this together! And more importantly, I trust you.” Nina is being more supportive than you expected… “Now I should go back to watching the cameras. This break was long enough as it is. If you need anything, my door is always open.” The wink she gives is all that’s left for you to see.

We've literally been fighting for our lives almost nonstop for nearly two whole days. Gotta go stay hydrated and get some alone time before the hard stuff.

Before leaving, you ask Nina where Nariko is supposed to be. After hearing what happened and knowing what she tried to do back on the rooftop, you’re worried for her well-being. Turns out she’s right here in the bunker! You part ways with your ex-girlfriend and make your way to the designated room.

You know you found the right room when you spot Henry guarding it outside. You decide to ask him what’s going on, seeing as you’re still kinda clueless.

“Uh… nothing much man. Nariko felt asleep a few hours ago and Yupie wanted out. Wanted to see you first, but when I told her you were going to report back to Nina first, she left for Amelia.” He shrugs, all casual. “So I’m guarding here.”
“Why aren’t you inside? And why didn’t anybody tell Nina?” This just raises further questions!
“Dude, I want to keep the good memories, you know? She’s like a totally different person. And I… kind of get nervous and stuff.” Henry blushes. He has a point – Nariko’s much more intimidating now than she was as an amnesiac hobo! “And if nobody told Uccelli, then that’s on Yu. She’s the one moving around, not me.”

“Right. I’m going in. I guess I’m relieving you from your post? Nina knows by the way, you don’t have to worry about that.”
“Uuuh, sure? I’m gonna go get some food upstairs. See ya.” Henry starts walking away, then stops himself. “Hey one thing. I forgot to say it before, but it’s nice to have you back!”
“Thanks. I’m glad to be back too.” One day that feels like a month…

Henry gives you a thumb up before leaving. Now it’s just you and Nariko…

You open the door and enter a dimly lit room. Like the other spartan rooms inside the panic bunker, there is only a bed, a table, and a wardrobe. Unlike the others, there is a TV on the wall displaying a foreign drama. On the bed is a familiar sight you aren’t sure you missed or not: a very worn-down Nariko hypnotized watching TV – identical to the early days when you met her as a homeless girl. She hasn’t noticed you or reacted to the door opening at all.

In fact, you don’t think she’s reacting to anything but what the TV is showing. You’re not sure if Nariko even has the ability to do so in this state…

What do you do?

>“Hey Nariko, it’s me. Do you want to talk?”
>Sit next to her. “Nariko, talk to me. Please.”
>Sit next to her and stay quiet. Let her speak.
>Turn off the TV! Escapism is unhealthy! Right?
>Go invisible, move in front of the TV, reappear.

You sit next to her quietly, then you put your arm around her. Next you pull her head into that space between your neck and shoulder so she’s leaning on you. Her eyes remain glued to the TV, but you hear her sniff.

“Johnny…” She mutters, her face still hypnotized by the screen in front, expression still empty. It’s unlike Amelia’s cold emptiness, though the result is the same…

As your efforts remain fruitless to a dismal degree, you decide you need to stop being so cautious! A hug should help her more than some dumb drama! Gently lifting Nariko’s head so you can stand, you walk between her and her hypno-machine and embrace her soft body, pulling her up to you!

“Johnny…” She closes her eyes and hugs you back! That’s progress! “Dear Johnny… Why do you keep coming back?”

“You need leave again. You need to leave. I can’t help you. I’m only going to slow you down. You know that.”

“You need to leave and never return.”

Okay, not what you hoped for. Something about this feels beyond her state on the rooftop that day, almost entranced…

What do you do?

>“I don’t know what’s going on, but I’m really here Nariko. And I’m not leaving. No way.”
>“Uhh… Are you okay? I know you’re not really okay. But I mean, are you really okay?”
>“Okay, I can do that.” Turn yourself invisible. “Better now?” Could this break her trance?

“I need to leave and never return?” You look at her with all the determination you can muster in this moment. “I will never willingly leave my friends like that, I’ll never leave you like that.”

“Friend…? What I have done to earn such a title…? Such words of praise coming from you only wounds me further. You have tormented me all day. There is no hope for me. Please, you need to leave. You know this is better. You know I can’t help. How many times do I need to keep failing for you to understand? You need to leave again. Tell my parents they were right about me.” The same empty stare continues, as if piercing through you into the television you’ve been bodyblocking.

You decide you’d had enough and shut off the TV. The drama ends with a black screen; no ‘to be continued’ or ‘the end’ or anything remotely satisfying… just an anticlimactic stop.

“Mariano…? What happened to Mariano?!” Nariko blinks several times, waving her head around expecting the television to magically be somewhere else. She throws herself off the bed and onto the floor, starts crawling towards the TV past you. Suddenly, she stops and stares down at her shaking hands. “Huh…?”

Turning away from the cold stone tile, Nariko faces up at the ceiling. Taking a sharp breath as if slapped, she runs her hands all over her body, clutching frantically at whatever she can with no rhyme or reason. “What happened to me…? My body… My hair…? What happened? Where am I? Wait… Dear Johnny… Amelia… Marcus…! What happened to them? No! NO! I l couldn’t keep my promise… AAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaah!” She pulls her beanie down and starts sobbing uncontrollably.

“I’m worthless! I’m a living failure! Why am I alive? Why?! WHY?!

…?

It seems this is quite troubling to answer. We are leaving this for next thread. You can discuss what you guys want to answer in this thread and come to a consensus, so we can start with that. Thanks for playing!

>Nariko, I know how it feels to Do Your Best and still fail. It wasn't long ago that I felt the same way you do after almost dying to help Neko. Everyone was against me and I felt like a burden just like you. But do you know what I did? I tried to change myself. If I let myself fall into a endless state of self depreciation, nothing would change and I'd just prove myself right. If you're so worried about being a burden you have to pick yourself up and promise your going to do better next time. Not to anyone else, but yourself. If you do that you'll improve no matter how long it takes. That's all you or anybody can ask of you Nariko, to Do Your Best. If you do that I'll always accept you
Give the girl some hope from our own experiences
