So.. let's see. News. Uh.. discovered a youtube channel Kent Rollins? he does cowboy cooking and it looks bloody amazing. Haha. (send help I can't stop watching)

Archive here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=Strike%20Witches%202016 For anyone just coming in, there was an... abortive attempt at getting this going last year. The strikers 16 reboot is what you're looking for- the original attempt has little to do with this run, other than a few character names you may see.

Anyway, I think that's it for news as such, so let's get rolling!

===============================================================================================================

You were up on time this morning, though you’re starting to regret it.

Your alarm went off at 04 in the morning, which was plenty of time to cook a simple breakfast, make coffee, make a second pot of coffee for a thermos, go on your morning run, shower and clean up, and still have some time to sit and catch up on the news. You regret the news mostly- it’s an election year and that’s all anyone seems to want to talk about, much to your disappointment. There’s plenty of news in southeast Asia, with Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand all undergoing massive armament and military expansion programs, and the Philippines enacting a new national service law for their witches. Even Taiwan and the South Koreans are spending a huge amount of cash on new hardware and training efforts. Of course, the news out of the larger powers in the region- Japan and China- are about the same story, with the IJN laying down two more destroyers of their Maya class in the last four months.

You hit the door kind of glad to be able to turn it all off- while you’ve never much cared for the news, this year seems particularly bad, especially with the elections being the circus they are. Your own opinion is it doesn’t matter to you- even during the worst of the recession, the wyvern program didn’t get touched, and you’re already plugged, and assigned to a jet. Since Wyvern crews always go on basis of ‘oldest first’, you’d be the last they got rid of, just because of that.

At least, that’s what you tell yourself.

Instead you find yourself headed to operations again. You’re getting kind of excited- two flights left in the trial period, and then it’s on to the real meat of the training, your deck tour, and on to the operational pool. It’s kind of hard to not be excited- the sun is alread crawling over the horizon, and the pair of black Toyota SUVs in the lot indicates Kyou is already on site- probably down in the observation room.

You pause on entering as another car rolls up- one of the gray government vehicles used for fetching people from off post- and parks, the driver, a marine in the green and brown digital pattern MARPAT gets out, pausing to salute you before walking around to pull open the passenger door. “This is ops, ma’am.” He says to the passenger- a witch with blonde hair- as she steps out. “The el-tee up there can help you from here.”

“Thanks corporal!” She responds, her voice bright and cheerful. “You have a good day, ok?”

“You too, ma’am.” the marine says with a smile as he walks around the back of the car, popping open the trunk and pulling a yellow athletic bag out. “Was this it?”

She nods, taking it from him and slinging it over her shoulder. “Mhmm.” She says. “I packed light!”

He nods, getting back in the car as she approaches you, smiling widely. “Hi!” she says, thrusting out one hand for a handshake. “I’m Lotus Earhart, I’m supposed to report in to Colonel Jackson. Do you know where I need to go for that?”

She’s certainly used to civilian life- she’s even dressed like one, a pair of cut-off daisy duke jeans over top of a pair of comfortable looking sneakers. She’s got extensive tattoos on one leg and the opposing arm, though you’re pretty sure you shouldn’t stare long enough to figure out everything you see there. Mid-length wavy blonde hair runs down past her shoulders, and she certainly eats pretty well- you think the term most people would use here is ‘thicc’. You’re not sure.

[] Yeah, if you want, I can walk you up to his office.
[] He’s up on the second floor, go right out of the elevators and head to the desk, they’ll get you the rest of the way.

[x] Yeah, if you want, I can walk you up to his office.

You nod, noting that she might have been letting her eyes wander a bit too. “Yeah. If you want, I can walk you up to his office.” You say.

Her smile, if anything, gets wider. “Oh, really? Thanks, that’d be great!” She says. “I’m already getting kind of turned around and they drove me right here from the airport.” She laughs as you nod. “I haven’t even been set up with a room or anything yet. I guess the military can really move too fast for itself sometimes, can’t it?”

You nod again. “Here, you need to check in at the front.” You say, motioning for her to step up to the duty desk at the front of the building. Ops isn’t exactly entirely secure, but it’s also not open to visitors, usually. Still, she’s expected, so everything goes smoothly, and she’s quickly issued with a badge printed on a sticker.

You lead the way up to the second floor, and the colonel’s office. “I’m really excited to be here.” She says as you ride the elevator up. “I never figured I’d get selected for the wyvern program! Oh man, how cool is this?” She practically bounces on her feet. “Are you a pilot too?”

[x] Yeah.

You nod. “Yeah.” You say- part of you is too interested to see where she’ll go, if she doesn’t know who you are. The other part of you is just playing games at this point- which, while it may be a bit out of line, is still funny, and you get the impression she won’t be too mad at you for it.

“You are? Oh, yeah.” She laughs, looking back over at you. “I’m still pretty bad at reading all the pins and ribbons and things. Kinda funny, isn’t it? I do all this contracting work and stuff, and I still can’t tell a general from a midshipman or whatever. I guess I’d better start learning, huh?” She laughs again.

The elevator dings and you step out, half turning and waiting for her to step out. She looks down the hallways, before twisting on her heel to follow you. “Lead on!” She says, cheerily, falling into step next to you. “Man, this is all so awesome.” She says, before laughing again. “Mom’s gonna be so pissed. You from around here?”

You shake your head. Funnily enough, this is the first time you’ve been in California for any length of time, with most of your other time here being limited to layovers on the way to Japan or Washington.

“I’m from LA, but I live in Palmdale.” She says. “I would have drove down, but they insisted I fly in. Guess they don’t want me wandering off, huh?” She laughs again. “Ah, as if I could! Oh man I’m sorry I’m babbling, but this is soooo exciting. So you said you’re a pilot too? What’s your airframe?”

[x] I’m a wyvern driver.

“I’m a wyvern driver.” You say after a moment’s thought. You don’t want to lie, but you’re still curious about how much she’s going to put together- though she already admitted that she’s not exactly up to speed on military life. Of course, her attire could have told you that.

“Oh, really?” She says, sounding a bit awed. “Wow! What’s it like? I bet it’s incredible, isn’t it? Oh man, this is so cool. I can’t wait to get in the cockpit.” She laughs. “It’s gonna be a bit weird not flying it myself, but they said there’s so much to do that I’m not going to have time to worry. Is your backseater around? I’d like to ask her a few questions.”

You shake your head.

“Oh, that’s too bad.” She says. “Oh well, I guess it’s fine. They said you can’t really talk about the pipeline anyway, because so much of it is based on our ability to react to changing situations.” She laughs again. “As if that’s a problem! I mean, c’mon, test pilot!” She indicates herself, running her hands down her sides. “Reacting to changing situations is like, my job!”

You’re starting to wonder if she’s like your aunt- either that or she had a bit much coffee this morning. You stop at the desk outside the office area here. With all the brass in these offices sharing one ‘receptionist’ you’re pretty sure the sailor on duty gets a bit harried. She looks fresh out of school, and her rank pins indicate she hasn’t been with the fleet long- you can see her start when she catches your rank pins. She looks pretty confused by Lotus, though, and turns to you.

“How can I help you, sir?” She asks.

“Miss Earhart is here to see Colonel Jackson.” You say. She looks down, flipping through a paper planner on her desk, before nodding.

“Oh, right. She’s for the wyvern program? I’ll show her in, he wanted to see her as soon as she got here. You’ll have to wait here, sir.” The sailor says, standing up.

Lotus gasps from next to you. “Oh my gosh I’m sorry!” She says, suddenly. “I was so excited I didn’t catch your name! Oh man I am sooo sorry, that’s my bad.”

[x] Morgan Laroux-Bishop.

You smile a little, trying to not look too smug. Son of a catwitch you might be, but you aren’t one yourself. At least, that’s what you try and remember.

“Morgan Laroux-Bishop.” You say.

“What? Oh man, really? Aw jeeze.” She says, doing a double, finally seeming to slow down and read your name plate. “Great. And now the pilot thinks I’m a blabbering retard.”
You shake your head. “Just excited. All is forgiven.”

She sighs. “At least there’s that.”

“Lieutenant?” The sailor asks- she’s been waiting patiently to show Lotus into the colonel’s office. You nod again.

“Sorry. Go ahead. See you in a couple, miss Earhart.”

“Yeah. Looking forward to it!” She says, her initial enthusiasm proving resilient enough to bounce back quickly. She smiles as she brushes past you, following the sailor into the colonel’s office, leaving you alone out here for a minute.

You head down to the briefing room, finding it dark and empty, as usual. It’ll probably stay that way, empty except for yourself, for a little while, given that Lotus is probably about to get a good long briefing on what it means to be activated, and the requirements on her, here- the commitment to the navy, all of that. You shake your head at the thought- it’s going to be pretty jarring to go from a civilian life like hers to a military one.

You’re shaken out of your musing by your phones text alert going off. Looking down there’s a short text from Cass- “R U available B4 flight? Wan 2 talk some. Ship soon.” While her text speech drives you insane, you do almost kind of feel bad for your sister- she’s got a point about being kind of alone out there, and all of them have always been surrounded by each other, an extensive support network. You’re weird in that you always kept your distance from all of it, even just a couple steps.

[] Tell her you’re available a bit now- but you don’t know how long.
[] See if she can wait- probably better to deal with this later.

[x] Tell her you’re available a bit now- but you don’t know how long.

You frown, but text her back that you’ve got a short while to talk, assuming she can come see you- you don’t need to be leaving the briefing room. That you do so in correctly spelled and punctuated English is a point of pride for you. A man has to have standards, damnit.

Cass wanders in a couple minutes later, most likely through abuse of the old witch privilege, probably, though given that she’s just a Bishop- and thus one of the navy’s most favorite witches- she may just have been able to breeze through based on that alone. Most people don’t bother your sisters too much, especially, you’ve noticed, around here.

“Hey Morg.” She says, walking in and looking a bit down. You stand long enough to hug her- she may be acting, but she doesn’t try to grab your butt this time, which makes you think she really is a bit depressed by the whole thing. She does linger in it a bit too long, but that’s just Cass.

“What’s on ya mind, Cass?” You ask after she finally lets go, finding a chair next to the one you’d been occupying when she came in. You sit back down next to her.

She sighs. “I’m supposed to report in to the Commander of the Kaga and the Ship’s Matron this afternoon.” She says. “Already cleared post and closed up my apartment in town. Dad’s taking my car up to Washington and Ana’s got all the stuff out of my kitchen.”

“Ah.” you say- you’re kind of familiar with the feeling, that case where you’re kind of in limbo, without a unit or home. Even for just a few hours, it’s uncomfortable to say the least. In this case, then, she’s probably just looking for friendly company, at least for now. “So once you report in, what then?”

>>
She shakes her head. “I don’t know. Ship’s not due to sail till the end of the week, but I’ll be staying aboard, and I don’t know what kind of freedom I’ll have. I’ve heard they treat their witches differently.”

You shrug. “You know as much as I do. Probably more, you visited aunts Jess and Kat more than I did.”

She shakes her head. “I didn’t pay any attention. I kinda wish I had.” She sighs. “I was so excited to do this, till I learned you were gonna be here. Now I just wanna stay and fly with you, but I’m already committed, and a Bishop never breaks their promise.”

“Have you thought about putting in for the wyvern program?” You ask- while it’s far, far too late to have a chance of flying with you as part of the same crew, as part of the program she’d at least have a better chance of flying with you as a wingmate.”

She shakes her head. “Why bother? I don’t wanna fly with anyone else anyway.” She says.

[x] What about aunt Merlin? Have you asked her about her program? She’s going to need more than one witch.

“What about aunt Merlin?” you ask. “Have you asked her about her program? She’s going to need more than one witch.”

She shakes her head. “No. Why would I? Even if she wanted to I bet they wouldn’t let her, just because there’d be the usual suspects bitching about favoritism and the navy turning into a Bishop playground.”

“So you haven’t.” You say.

She sighs and shakes her head. “She wouldn’t go for it.”

“How do you know?” You ask. “Listen, they’d block us being crew for a lot of reasons-”

“Even if we’d be incredible together.” she supplies.

“Not least of which being the link between crewmates.” You finish. “But you know as well as I do aunt M gets what she wants, when she wants it, and the navy would happily let you go fly for her if she asked. She wouldn’t even have to ask nicely.”

“Aunt Merlin doesn’t have that kind of pull.”

“Doesn’t she?” You ask. “Go find out. Go ask and see if she’d take you as one of her test subjects. See what she says. In fact, I bet you could before we started flying, she’ll be down in the observation deck.”

She sighs. “Even if I do and she does want me, I’m still on liaison for at least a cruise. At least six months.”

You shrug. “Yeah, and? We have sisters they’d replace you with, mark my words.”

“Fine, I’ll go ask.” She huffs. She looks up as the door opens, and the colonel steps through. He looks at Cass with one eyebrow raised.

“You need something, Lieutenant Commander?” He asks- you blink at your sister’s rank, having forgotten she’s managed a fairly successful career so far.

She shakes her head, standing up. “No, sir. Just asking my brother for some advice.” She says. He nods, then gestures towards the door.

“If you don’t mind, then.” He says, and she nods.

“See ya later, Morg.” She says. “I’ll ask.”

>>
You nod as she walks out of the room at the same time Lotus walks in. The two witches pause, looking each other up and down, then Cass continues on her way, while Lotus turns to watch her pass by, before the colonel clears his throat.

She grins and sits down next to you. “That was your sister?” She asks, and you nod. “Wow. You guys must have gotten the best genetics.” She laughs as the colonel plugs in his laptop and starts the projector.

“Welcome back, Lieutenant.” He says. “Crash investigation teams are working the bone crash still, before you ask. No news on that front.”

You nod.

“This is hop three of four for you.” He says. “Lieutenant Commander Earhart, this will be your first flight in the wyvern. For the rest of your time here, the Lieutenant is your aircraft and crew commander. He is in charge in the jet at all times, clear?”

She nods.

“Excellent. We’ll get clothing issue sorted if it becomes a necessity.” He says, then launches into the briefing. “For this one, you’re taking a bit of a trip. Your mission is to penetrate simulated hostile airspace in the ATR and destroy targets at the granite mountain airport, then maintain air superiority long enough for an army special operations team to insert in the test region safely, then exit the test range.”

“So it’s a repeat of my Canadian party trick?” Lotus asks. “Neat!”

The colonel shoots her a glance, then continues. “You’ll have tanker support from the Stennis, currently sailing with her battlegroup three hundred miles west of Seattle, Washington. You’ll be carrying a preselected weapons package. Any questions for me?”

[X] No, sir.

“No, sir.” You respond.

“Good. The Canadians, per standing agreement, have allowed use of their airspace for this hop, if you want to use it. Your actual route to the target to range is your decision. Expect redair to be searching for you the entire way.” He pauses. “Normal peacetime rules of flight over the continental US still apply- you cannot exceed the speed of sound over the CONUS or within twenty miles of the coast outside of training ranges. No such restriction exists in Alaska. Training rules also prohibit any ACM over the CONUS outside of designated training airspace or within twenty miles of the coast. The air force will be putting up the redair, expect aircraft out of Elmendorf and Eielson over the test range, and Mountain Home on the way up, at the very least.”

“There’s no fixed threat list?” Lotus asks, and the colonel shakes his head.

“This isn’t for investors.” He responds. “We want to see what you can do as a crew on a mission profile like the ones you may be tasked with in the fleet.”

She frowns some at the response, though to you it makes sense- in a shooting war, there’s painfully little information on what may come at you, according to both of your parents. You’ll know the broad strokes of course- what types of aircraft a hostile power may operate, for example- but the specifics are often too hazy to make out.

“The RCAF won’t be participating, but may have something track you through their airspace, should you route through it.” He says. “They use these kinds of flights to train AWACS operators and early warning crews sometimes. They are not part of the exercise, and you can ignore them, they will not be scored against you.”

You nod.

“That’s it. Last chance for questions.”

“I think I’m good.” Lotus says.

“No questions, sir.” You say, and he nods.

“Good. Lieutenant, by now you should be familiar with procedure, go get your shit done. Lieutenant commander, you’re headed down to the flight surgeon to be fit up. You know what all goes into a fitting?”

She nods. “They were pretty clear in training and in the packet they sent!” She says, still sounding excited. “No biggie. I’ve been naked before.”

There’s a sigh from the Colonel. “Right. That’s it then, both of you are dismissed.”

You nod, gathering your limited note-taking gear and tucking it under an arm.

“Oh man this is going to be so fun.” Lotus says, falling into step beside you. “I’m so excited I can hardly stand it! Oh man this is gonna be just like the party trick, we still talk about that sometimes at Palmdale.”

[x] Party trick?

“Party trick?” You ask- this is twice, now, she’s brought it up. She nods excitedly.

“Oh man, you should have seen it, it was so cool. We were finishing up the test and demonstration cycle for the F/B-22, you know, the strike raptor concept? So the suits wanted to show off what it could do during the restart a couple years ago, so we contracted with the RCAF to use their Manitoba range and stuck an old remote controlled army truck out there and told them to drive it around the whole range, just to show off what we could do.” She laughs. “So they tell me, ya know, hey flower child, take the demonstrator we’ve got built and go hit this truck in the middle of NOWHERE and then come back at the best possible speed.”

She laughs again. “Man that was so much fun. So I took off from Edwards, flew nonstop to the Manitoba range, hit the truck with a couple bombs, and flew back, like, five hour round trip. Only had to tank once, too.”

“So you can find targets?”

She shakes her head. “Not really, but I can figure out where I am and where I need to go without instruments or maps or anything. Doesn’t matter if I’m up in the stratosphere or down in the weeds, either, inverted, blacked out- I can figure out where I am and get where I need to go. I can also get jets to work at their paper specs- the napkin and margin specs, not the real world ones. Hypothetical max.” She says. “That’s how I found the target truck so easily, I was able to operate infrared and radar to their theoretical best performance.”

You nod- it’s impressive, though you feel like anything she’s able to coax out of a jet is still going to pale against Kyou. Then again, errorless direction finding is impressive no matter how you look at it- especially for a mission like this.

“I’m great at parties, too!” She says, laughing. “Anyway, yeah. I’m pretty good with jets in general, I guess it’s why I went with lockmart out of school instead of the navy. Kept getting in trouble for staring at the jets when I should have been focusing on strikers. I’m a rated pilot for those, too.” She pauses as you walk down the now-familiar hallway to the changing rooms. “Oh, I guess we’re here, huh?” She asks, laughing again- though now she sounds kind of nervous.

You nod again. “It takes about a half hour to get fit for a suit.” You say.

“Oh, ok.” She says, nodding. “Are you going to wait out here, or do I catch a ride to the jet separate from you?”

[] I’ll be out here, since I can’t get much done without you on hand.

[x] I’ll be out here, since I can’t get much done without you on hand.

“I’ll wait out here.” You tell her, getting a slightly relieved look in response. “I can’t get much done without you on hand.”

She smiles. “Already getting attached, huh?” She laughs, before twirling on a heel and walking through the changing room door.

You change quickly- you were already wearing a flight suit, and so it’s a simple matter to drop your wallet and cell phone in your locker and collect your uncontrolled gear- your thigh board and your gloves, among them- and head over to the life support cage, where you draw your helmet, G-suit, survival vest, and sidearm. The sidearm is a joke- and one you plan to replace in the fleet anyway. You’ve never been a fan of the M9, no matter how many times people tell you it’s a good pistol. You also have to make a note to get a scabbard for your hatchet- You’ve left it behind these last few flights, but you need to stop, just in case.

The weather shop is in a different room down the hall, so instead you wait on the wooden bench for Lotus to come out of her side of the house, clad in the armless flight suit variant, a smile still plastered on her face. “Oh man, I can’t beleive it.” She says, doing a little twirl in place. “You know they said I need to keep this from here on in?” She laughs. “As if I could get rid of it! Even if it does kinda make my butt look a little too big.”

You nod, refusing to get suckered into commenting on that. “You have everything, then?” You ask, and she nods.

“Yep! New gloves and everything. The slippers are kinda uncomfortable, but they said we don’t wear them in the jet anyway.” She laughs again. “I think they’re on some kinda crusade to get naked witches in the wyvern. Oh well, joke’s on them, last burning man I didn’t wear clothes at all.”

You blink at that, and she laughs again.

You board the crew van and take the drive that’s now starting to become rapidly familiar out to the jet. The crew seems pretty reduced today, and you’re greeted by the assistant crew chief again. She looks to be busy closing everything up and running final checks, but she salutes when she sees you get out of the old blue van. “Morning, sir, Ma’am.” She says.

“Good morning!” Lotus beams back as you salute- looking confused when the woman remains at attention for a moment. “Oh, uh. at ease?”

There’s a slight frown from the assistant chief, who turns to you. “We’ve already got you loaded except for the centerline, sir.” She says, gesturing back to the jet. “I know the mission profile calls for you to hit an airfield and then kill anything that comes out to get you away from it, but it’s a long assed flight too. Normally we’d load combined effects cluster bombs, but I thought a fuel tank might be a good idea, give you some wiggle room. I figure one tank would get you there without forcing you to tank somewhere obvious, but two should mean you don’t have to tank at all except for on the way home.”

“But what about the airfield?” Lotus asks. “We need bombs to hit that, right?”

the chief nods. “Yes, ma’am. But we were thinking that, well, cratering a runway isn’t that damn useful anymore anyway, so you could just use guns on the soft stuff and the buildings.” She shrugs. “Either way, sir, your call, we’ll load you however you want.”

Lotus looks over at you- either having no opinion herself or preferring to keep it to herself.

[] Load both tanks- fuel is going to mean more options for us on the way in, out, and over the range itself.
[] Load one tank- we’ll want the bombs so we can spend less time hitting the airfield when we get there
[] Don’t load any tanks- we really want some ords for ground targets, since we don’t know what else we’ll have to deal with.

One of the big names in custom work on CZs in the US is a company out of Louisiana called Cajun Gun Works.
With modern hollow points, there is no functional difference in the terminal ballistics of the major carry calibers. And proper shot placement trumps "muh stoppan powah" all day every day.
And the five-seven is a stupid meme that shoots an overpriced hipster bullet.

>>
>>3426265
Literally grasping at straws. A fucking gunsmith is the best you can do for a cajun gun? Everyone from GIGN to Secret Service uses the Five-seveN, and it clearly would replace 9mm in NATO if it wasn't for Germans being butthurt. You call the 5.7 a meme, but somehow pick the memiest CZ? You could have at least had the decency to pick something that wasn't literally a competition pistol. Look up the differences and demands of a service pistol and you'll see it's not something you should trust your life to. In fact, go ahead and show me any military, police, special forces, or other group that uses the Shadow. I'll wait.
>>
>>3426309
I thought the Germans just didn't want to spend the money on a new pistol when they already have one that works fine, which is totally valid. Honestly, in a service arm, actual performance of the weapon matters a lot less than economics, once you get something that works fine. The difference between acceptable and excellent may be a lot for the individual user....but not worth it on an organizational level. Buying cheap and acceptable is just a better idea. Yes the actual users don't like it, and may die because of it, but statistically it's not worthwhile for a marginal improvement on the macro scale.

[x] Load one tank- we’ll want the bombs so we can spend less time hitting the airfield when we get there

“Load in one tank.” You say, after thinking a second. “We’ll want the bombs to hit the airfield fast instead of making gun runs on it.”

She nods, turning to the ordinance crew, who appear to have heard. “Oh, admiral Wells wanted me to pass along that she dialed back the ships AI a bit, owing to your fourth flight. She told me that her concern was it was going to finish formation before you’d done final selection.”

You nod, looking around. “She’s not here?”

“No, sir. She took off about five minutes ago, said she was heading to the observation deck.”

“That’s a shame, I was looking forward to meeting her.” Lotus says, then laughs. “It’s not every day you get to meet a living legend!”

You nod, while the chief looks back over her shoulder, then nods. “Sir, if you wanna start your walkaround, you’re good to go.” She says. “We’ll get the weapons uploaded and the tank hooked up, and you can hit them last.”

You nod again, looking back over at Lotus as she moves to follow you. “I- uh.” she pauses, and frowns, looking lost for a second. “I don’t actually know if I should go get working on the computer startup, or walk around the jet with you.”

Because they use the P90, and wanted ammo commonality. And stop with the capitalizing the "n" shit, it's a cringey ass marketing thing that just looks dumb in an actual sentence.
And 5.7 not being adopted had as much to do with logistics and the Berlin wall coming down killing the urgency for PDWs to be adopted by NATO as with the "german butthurt" you choose to blame.
As for Morgan's pistol, let's look at logistics here. Is the US in this timeline using the five-seven? Clearly not, since the M9 is still in use. Which means getting 5.7mm in a warzone? Gonna be a BITCH. 9x19? Fuckin' EVERYBODY uses that shit. Hell if this timeline is like ours, even the fuckin' Russians and Chinks are using it now.
I should be more clear. The five-seven is a great gun, mechanically. Brilliant design, shooting a wicked little round. But history has consigned it to the realm of a few specific units (usually law enforcement and protection details), folks who want a cool, unique gun for the range, and people on the internet who just can't let it go.
As for the Shadow, I was grabbing a picture of a CZ with a red dot quickly, on my phone, during my break at work. Excuse me that the one I found in the like forty seconds of minimal effort I put in was a Shadow. Obviously for military use, a CZ actually built as a duty weapon would be far preferable, because as you said, the Shadow is a racegun.
The cajun part was meant to be me having a giggle.
Chill out dude, it's just a fuckin' quest.

What he is talking about is that the German delegation vetoed / objected witch resulted in the the decision being suspended, as pending NATO testing was on track to adopt FN's 5.7x28(five seven & p90 ) over H&K's 4.6x30mm ( MP7 & UCP/P46 )
the problems with logistics would be solved if ether was adopted by NATO as Bulk purchase of the cartridges would lower cost per round

otherwise you do raise valid points.

Yeah, arguments and all. It’s too bad that this has already been fated.
>>

The logistics I was referring to was specifically the cost of mass adoption and issue of PDWs, after the main impetus for the PDW (the danger of Warsaw Pact troops parachuting in behind NATO lines meaning rear echelon troops needed something with more hair on its balls than a pistol) was dead. The Germans' pettiness delayed the decision to that point, but the end of the Cold War sealed the round's fate.

>Personally I just wish Canadians would stop jacking it off like it's the second coming of Jesus Christ or something.
Eh, the people who won't shut up about GLORIOUS ARROW FOLDED 1000 TIMES are a small sect of FUKKEN LEAFs who only do it because it triggers certain people.

The rest of us canucks don't like them any more than you do because it spreads bullshit information and makes it impossible to have a decent discussion about aviation and history. Personally I like it just because delta wings are awesome and the prototype colour scheme was aesthetic as fuck.

>>3425761
>It was designed to take out strategic bombers, but came too late and was axed as everyone was moving to ICBMs.
The Arrow being "too late" is bullshit, ICBMs didn't made planes obsolete overnight. Countries with interceptors like the Delta Dart and Canuck continued to operate them until the 80s. After the whole song and dance about cancelling the Arrow because it wasn't needed they ended up buying the Vodoo, one of the Arrows contemporaries. People still speculate that there was some corruption or other fuckery going on at the time.

>It's not meant for dogfighting
Of course it's not for dogfighting you dingus, what part of interceptor do you not understand? The point of an interceptor (in period context) is to fly in a straight line as fast as possible so that you can launch your payload and destroy enemy bombers as far from friendly shores as you can. Everything else is dead weight that reduces your range and speed. These would almost certainly be suicide missions, not only does it double your range if you have no intention of returning home but the pilots planned to ram targets as well because any enemy that made it through could destroy multiple cities. That was simply the cold war reality they were living at the time, it only sounds strange to us because now have ICBM based MAD with silos and submarines and pure interceptor planes are an obsolete concept.

>>3425775
We still have plenty of aviation tech relative to our size as a country, it's just that none of it is fighter jets. Bombardier is still around (they make the Learjet now), and we still produce weapons and parts for military supply (including subcontracting for the F-35).

>Chill out dude, it's just a fucking quest.

Take a look at your post and tell me who needs to chill.

You clearly have no clue about the pdw decisions, but the other anon educated you on that. The Five-seveN (that's literally it's name, so I'm sorry you can't handle that) being selected by those units is fundamental proof that it's use in personnell protection is top notch, compared to some shitty gun shop tune-up which is only folks who want a meme range gun and people on the internet who've never fired one.

If anything, we probably have the training and latent talent of the mother of fucking night to go full hatchet on some motherfuckers, but you're worried about getting rounds? Motherfucker if we use more than two mags we are so far up shit Creek it's not going to fucking matter. The purpose of a pistol is to get you to a rifle or kill someone who absofuckinglutely has to die to save yourself-- it's no contest between a run of the mill service 9 and a dedicated pdw.
>>

Didn't one of the naval side characters in SWQ have this talent? The guy who married Georgette? It's been a while and I don't remember.

>>3426265
The military doesn't use hollowpoints. Our choice of pistol really doesn't matter because we either will never use it, or will only use it once to cap some conscript in the back of the head and take his gun. And if we ever use THAT it will be to die in a last stand as the enemy witches come to take away our geneseed. The point is to escape after all, combat only happens if we fuck up.

>Everyone from GIGN to Secret Service uses the Five-seveN
They haven't for years, they only got 5-7's with their initial batch of P90's as a package deal, they've been using Glocks, SiG's and FNH's ever since. Also the only NATO member who voted for widespread adoption of 5.7x28 as a service round was Belgium, everyone else argued against it because its fucking stupid.

>Look up the differences and demands of a service pistol and you'll see it's not something you should trust your life to
Who's grasping at straws now? Also motherfucker I took a 1980's Colt Delta Elite into combat and actually used it without it getting me killed in the streets.

Also just pointing out that the SP-01/Tactical/Shadow/Shadow Tactical all have been issued to NATO forces in the last 15 years throughout most of the balkans, Poland, and a few others, I've even seen Spanish intel and SF guys with SP-01 Phantoms, which are really flimsy things compared to a shadow.

[x] You should go get started getting the computers up, we’ll roll faster that way.

You shake your head. “You should go get the computers up, we’ll be rolling faster that way.” You say, getting a nod from her. She turns in place and starts up the ladder built into the side of the nose- there’s no rolling stairs here today for you. CPO Brown joins you as you start your walk- She, you note, like the crew chief, carries a thermos of coffee with her.

“She’s in good shape, sir.” She says, lending her own experienced eye to the preflight inspection as you go through. “Admiral Wells had been worried there was going to be stress damage on some of the more delicate shit, the wing joints and the engines specifically, but there wasn’t. We damn near went over the whole plane with a fine-toothed comb looking for anything, but there wasn’t a single thing out of place. Hell of a strong witch to pull that off, from what flight data said.” She pauses, looking over at the ordinance crew, busily loading the second tank in your centerline bays now. She gestures over to them. “She also made some noise about doing some more work with the bays. They never seem happy with the damn things. Course, changing them was a dumbshit move, but hey, navy and the spirit of buords, right?”

“I did wonder about that.” You say, looking into the open nacelle bays- four sidewinders, it looks like. “Didn’t these used to be able to carry AMRAAMS too?”

1/2
>>
She nods. “Some of the older ships still can, too. They changed it when the Air force got their Romeo and Whiskey bones. Idea was they strip that out, shrink the bays down, and then you just datalink with a missile truck in the AO, or a tico or burke. Does double duty, because it also means you can guide in land attack missiles if you need to. ‘Course, then we had the budget cuts and someone pointed out that the wyvern fleet was never really operating in the kind of environment where you could operate a missile truck too, and even SM-6s only go about a hundred, hundred thirty miles.” She shrugs. “So here we are.”

You nod- navy procurement the last decade or so has had a few problems, and, while it’s remained remarkably untouched, the wyvern program was never going to get away without some measure of questionable decision making.

“Eh, it’s not so bad though. Admiral Wells was already making notes on what she could do with ‘em, and she was talking about bringing in her fab girls to do work between selection and workup flight.” she says. “We’ll see how that goes. You’ve got, what, this and one more?”

You nod. “Reflight.”

“Oh, right. well, no big deal there. Most guys get one or two flights beyond the three selection ones anyway. You given any thought to asking about an alternate?”

“Like an alternate witch?”

She nods. “Yeah. I mean, they’d bitch, but I bet you could get a flight if you asked for it. Even with the reflight with commander Peterson.”

[x] Now that you bring it up, I might.

“Now that you bring it up, I might.” You say, satisfied everything is in order and the plane is in peak condition- not that you’d expected anything else.

She nods. “Like I said, it’s pretty common. I’ve seen some guys come through that do six or more, but less than four seems to be pretty out there. Everything good?”

You nod. “Looks good chief.”

“Alright. We’ll finish upload, I’ll get you on external power and air. Be safe, sir.”

You nod, grabbing your helmet bag from it’s place near the ladder and climbing up. Lotus, in the back seat, is already strapped in, her legs disappearing at mid-thigh in the interface. She looks up as you crawl over the canopy lip, unhooking her oxygen mask. “Startup’s done to MIU active.” She says.

You nod- she’s waiting on you. You drop into the ejection seat, stuffing your now-empty helmet bag in the small storage space next to your right leg. You run through your own personal checklist first, strapping in and reaching out to plug your helmet’s umbilical into the ports before setting it on your head. There’s the slight click of it interfacing with your implants, and the echo-chamber effect as you reach over to manually toggle the MIU.

“MIU is live.” Lotus calls from the back- she’s not plugged, of course, but she can still read a screen. “We’re good to begin startup checklist.”

You confirm, and the two of you rapidly go through the startup procedure. Her experience shows here- there’s no hitches or issues, and your engines are started up well before you thought they’d be. You’re disconnected from external air and power, and the chocks are pulled a second later.

“Follow the marshal to the taxiway, then proceed to runway two-four lima.” Lotus directs. Hold there for takeoff clearance.”

“Two four Lima.” you confirm- the shorter of the two runways at the base, though still within even a fully-loaded wyvern’s short field capability- in theory, you can get one off a carrier deck with no catapult, if you can run from the stern out over the bow. Of course, you have to do so with almost no fuel in the tanks and no extra weight, but in theory, it’s possible at full WEP.

1/2
>>
You’re just as glad to not have to try it though as you taxi to the runway and line up, holding for clearance. It’s a short wait- just a few minutes- while a tomcat lands on the longer runway next to you before you’re cleared. Of course, once you are, you’re airborne quickly, climbing to altitude and passing out over the city before banking northbound.

“Oh wow. This baby has some moves!” Lotus calls from the back. “I’m really gonna have to hit the gym if we do that much more. Made my thighs do things I’m not quite sure I like.” She laughs. “Gear’s up and locked, we’ve got a green board. Weapons stowed and in safe mode. How do you want to navigate this?”

You’ve been weighing the options- with the one fuel tank aboard, you’ll practically have to tank on the way in and the way out, but you’re not limited to the coast nearly as much. Of course, you can also use an inland route, which would make getting out to a tanker more of a challenge, but it would also make you harder to find- the air force is probably going to expect you to come in via the coast or the sea, and will most likely be focusing their search there.

[] Go up the coast- it’s going to make tanking easier, and we can always go inland or out to sea from there, if we need to.
[] Stay inland. We can’t do much to avoid airforce jets there, but they can’t do anything than tail us anyway, and it’ll be harder to find us there.
[] Go out to sea. there’s no terrain to hide in, but it’s a big ocean and alaska has a lot of coast for them to watch.

Age notwithstanding I think she'd be fine as an SIO, her skill set is exactly the kind of thing that would have saved our ass back in 69 where Frank nearly died and she now has decades of racing and test pilot experience. Whether or not she could do the full 18 years is questionable but I'm sure she'd try. She is also stated to have zero issues adapting to new equipment which means that she could easily make the jump from strikers to SIO, back to strikers, or maybe even back and forth.

Mostly though I want to see what her test pilot experience can do for the Wyvern and it's AI. It clearly learns a lot from both us and any witch in the second seat and the more test scenarios we can put it through the better it will be in the long run. Plus getting Danielle, Lotus and Wendy in the same room as Merlin can only lead to good things because it sounds like she's going all in on new VDNI tech and the more techwitches she can work with the better.

>>3428441
>I’ve seen some guys come through that do six or more, but less than four seems to be pretty out there.
At the end of the day it's the pilot's choice no matter how much the navy and matrons might grumble. If the match doesn't work out there's no recourse, someone else can get plugs and fly the plane but it's a huge expensive pain in the ass. Way more expensive than a few more test flights, so it at least makes sense that the pilots can do this.

Whether or not we should take advantage of the system to that degree is debatable, 6+ flights is a bit much. I would at least like to see Wendy again, getting to meet and fly with a Youngspawn could also be amazing. But 5 would be the absolute limit for me, I see no need to bring out the book again to make our list any longer.

[x] Stay inland. We can’t do much to avoid airforce jets there, but they can’t do anything than tail us anyway, and it’ll be harder to find us there.

“We’re going to take an inland route.” You say, already reviewing the potential points where the air force could find you- there’s a few along the northern rockies, but you’re reasonably sure the lack of AWACS means that even king raptor’s radars are going to struggle to pick you out of the mountains.

“Along the rocky mountains?” Lotus asks. “It’ll mean our best tank point will be near Graham island. I’ll get a route for us in a second, but if you don’t want to overfly Edwards you need to turn eastbound now to heading zero five six.”

You confirm, turning the wyvern to the specified heading, crossing the coast again and passing over the city of Oceanside. A minute later, a proposed route appears on your MFD. “That’s the best route I can come up with for now.” Lotus says. “It should keep us in the thickest part of the mountains except for when he have to head west to tank.”

The AI confirms- and you get the real sense that it’s learning from the route, too, filing it away for later examination. You’re passing over the desert and on into the foothills of the mountains quickly and quietly- Lotus seems to not speak much, at least not yet.

Still you’d have missed a turn if the AI hadn’t warned you of it- not necessarily a failing on her part, but certainly an oversight. With the MIU, verbal communication is less necessary, you’re told- though at the same time, she’s not plugged and should have warned you. “Oh!” She says, surprised. “I’m sorry. I uh... I got caught up looking at this. I didn’t know the computer core was built around a QR-512. It’s amazing to see what they’ve done with the avionics in this plane.” She laughs. “I know, I sound like some corporate spy. Don’t worry, they’ve already talked to me about that. I don’t feel like going to a supermax over making the company a couple more dollars.”

I’m not arguing if it’s possible, or even acceptable, to go through more flights. I’m just saying that it’s delaying the story for weeks just for the novelty of seeing another character or two. We already have two good choices and one excellent choice.

I didn’t even think about Wendy’s age impacting our ability to complete our service. If she somehow became our backseater and then had to quit then we would too. Hard pass then. Also, I don’t see how her using strikers will ever be relevant if we need her to in order to function.

[x] Yeah, Aunt Merlin is pretty amazing.

You smile underneath your helmet. “Yeah, aunt Merlin is pretty amazing.” You agree.

“Amazing isn’t the half of it!” Lotus says from the back. “She’s got six of these things linked together, there’s probably more computing power here than they’ve got in some server farms. That’s amazing just because of the boxes themselves. Each one is hand assembled by an Iranian expat witch, and she charges a lot for them. And these are all linked to another pair of boxes that have to be Wells originals. And the work she’s done with the airframe and power plants is unreal.” She laughs. “No wonder the suits are so jealous of Vought. God, I can’t imagine what they’d do to get her working at Palmdale again.”

You don’t respond, instead keeping your attention focused on your passive sensors. There’s not many early-warning or air-search radars in the interior of the nation- especially not any that can easily detect a wyvern- but as you cross into southern Idaho, you’re getting close to mountain home AFB and it’s King raptors. While you expect most of them are out over the coast, there has to be a few still in the area- and their radars are powerful enough to detect you unless you duck down into the mountains.

The problem is, doing so is going to severely reduce your fuel efficiency- while, with the belly tank in your bay, it’s not going to cause you to have much of a problem, it means that you’ll have to call to tank soon- and radio transmission could guide them into you, especially if there’s multiple aircraft up in the area. Your satellite communications suite would mean that you can call to the Stennis to put a tanker up, but it’s going to be delayed over a radio- and you can’t lurk over one area too long without serious risk, especially over the coast.

[] Use Satcom. It’ll be impossible for them to detect, and the coast there is still pretty mountainous.
[] Make a radio call. You can get in, tank, and sprint out before they’ll get aircraft up there to shadow you.

[x] Use Satcom. It’ll be impossible for them to detect, and the coast there is still pretty mountainous.

“Lotus, get on satcom and get the stennis to get the tanker up.” You say over the intercom, noting that your fuel levels are still acceptable- you’re not even at bingo fuel yet, but you’ll be there soon. Factoring in the ability to set down at any airbase or civilian airport along the route, should it be necessary, you’re not too worried about running out of gas.

It takes a couple minutes before she gets back on the intercom. “They’re launching a pair of KS-3s to tank us up.” She says. “Their time to station is approximately an hour, callsign Exxon. They’ll be orbiting over the Learmouth bank, on the north side of Graham island.” A way mark appears in your helmet display, the distance still showing close to a thousand miles away. You don’t take any course changes yet- while there’s not many air search radars here in the interior of the US, there is one at Mountain Home, and another at Fairchild AFB, near Spokane, Washington, and you want to give them plenty of distance.

Still, the distance closes quickly- you’re better than half again as fast as the KS-3s, though, given that neither aircraft is stealthy or even all that hard to find, you’re hoping the RCAF isn’t allowing the air force to fly patrol corridors up the coast.

“Hey, Morgan?” Lotus calls as you cross into Canadian airspace, just before you turn westbound to make the refueling hitch. “I’ve got a couple big radars out there, about a two hundred miles north-northwest of us. I don’t know who they are, but I think if we get much closer they’ll see us at this altitude.”

You were afraid of that- without going active yourself, there’s no way to tell if those are USAF King Raptors, USAFR Raptors, or RCAF aircraft- the newest Arrow variant’s radar is powerful enough to detect even you at that range, though they’re not exercise participants, there’s no guarantee they won’t tell the air force where they saw you last. The raptors and king raptor would struggle to see you- though they might, but a flight of arrows is going to see you for sure.

The problem is, getting lower to terrain mask means that you’re going to have to let the tankers sit longer on their hitch- and that runs the risk of air force birds picking them up, and loitering nearby till you tank, giving them a position fix on you this close to Alaska. While the whole state isn’t a training range, they’re famously friendly to Aviation units- as such, there’s no peacetime rule-of-flight restriction on ACM or supersonic flight, except over Fairbanks, the capitol of Juneau and the Seward peninsula.

[] You’ll have to risk it- they might see you, but they’ll damn sure see those tankers if they’re out there more than thirty minutes
[] You can’t risk getting tagged now- get low and stay in the mountains. They may not have patrols up over the coast yet.

We'll apparently have to unsneak them.
>>
[x] You’ll have to risk it- they might see you, but they’ll damn sure see those tankers if they’re out there more than thirty minutes.

You have to risk it, you realize. The tankers are just too visible- and there’s no reason a pair of USN tankers are going to be loitering about, if not for you. You adjust your flight path a little, trying to keep those radars out at a distance, but they do edge closer regardless. Hopefully they’re just a normal peacetime training flight- with any luck, they’re not actively up here looking for you.

Still, you sweat pretty badly as the distance seems to crawl by. “They’re arrow twos.” Lotus says from the back. “Computer just got a match on their radar signature. They’re staying parallel to us.”

You hope they don’t stay that way long as the Canadian countryside crawls by beneath you, but they do- and the continual sweep of radiation over your jet’s skin indicates they know you’re there. They don’t broadcast, though- which is a small favor. They keep their distance the entire time- and the radar never spikes, so at most they’re just watching you, not actively tracking. It’s a small favor.

You crawl up on the refueling point, having seen the pair of vikings miles away. “Exxon, Exxon. This is Eagle.” You call, getting answered by a friendly, southern drawl.

“Eagle, this is Exxon. What kept ya?” The tanker pilot responds with a chuckle. “We’ve been on our hook for about twenty minutes now. Come on in, we’re waiting on chow still!”

You shake your head, watching the drouge unwind as you extend your refueling probe and plug in, watching your levels start climbing back up. You’d reached bingo fuel about twenty minutes ago- you couldn’t have made it back to Miramar without tanking. From here, it’s still twelve hundred miles straight in to hit the range complex- which means you’ll almost certainly have to tank a second time on the way back.

Lotus calls a warning just as you feel it- there’s another pair of radars to your north west. They’re at the maximum edge of their effective range, even against the nonstealty vikings, which means they won’t see you, not yet, but they’re closing- and coming from that direction, they’re almost certainly king raptors out of Elmendorf.

You’ve got two options here- head back inland, which gives you the mountains again, but means that you’re going to be over the flat lands of Alaska really close to either of the major air bases in the state- or you could head out to sea, which would add at least six hundred miles to your flight, but means you could both use the wyvern’s supercruise sooner, and means they’d have much more ground to cover.

[] Use the mountains again

[x] Head out over the water.

“We’re going out over the Pacific” you call back, unhooking from the tanker and breaking away, diving to gain a bit of airspeed.

“Ok, I’ll recalculate our route.” Lotus says. “I think the air force only has stations at Fire island and Unalaska, so I’ll try to avoid those. How far away should I try to keep us?” She asks.

You think for a second, but the AI provides the answer. “At least four hundred miles.” You say, noting that you’ll have to stay pretty low either way, but that’s less of a problem now.

“Ok!” She sounds like she’s starting to get excited. “Let me figure this out, keep pushing west.”

There’s only a narrow gap- in theory it’s a couple hundred miles between the radar ranges you’re giving the two bases, but both of them are equipped with very modern- and powerful- emplaced land based AEGIS ashore systems. They’re actually fairly common on the coast- most big bases have at one with at least one 32-cell VLS system, and places like San Diego have many more launchers for their systems- You’ve heard there’s at least ten VLS emplacements around the city, protecting NAS Halsey Field, Miramar, the USMCRD, and the naval base there. The Elmendorf complex has three VLS systems in place- along with semi-mobile systems in the mountains around the base.

The tension slowly ratchets up- there’s no air patrols through here, but you can detect the faint hints of the radar in the distance. It’s very faint, but the long range detection radars there is designed to pick up aircraft at extreme ranges and vector fighters to intercept, so even getting this close is nerve wracking. “Feet dry” you call after what feels like a short eternity, turning northbound as you cross the coast over a town the fighter identifies as Chignik. You’re only over land for a couple of minutes before you’re back out over the water of Bristol bay, still skirting the Elmendorf radar.

“We’re about forty minutes out.” Lotus calls as you cross the coast again, now truly over land. It’s kind of strange, you think- you’re only a few hundred miles from places where some of the earliest phases of the soviet war were fought. The range complex you’re attacking is a former soviet forward air base- fighters from here were involved in the furball where your dad’s legend started.

“Thirty minutes.” Lotus warns. “This is going to be fun!”

You can’t help but wonder if dad thought that over Tanana.

Otherwise, guys, you know how it goes! We'll be back next week in the same place, so till then guys, cheers!

I...what? I can tell you right now that most guys do not give a flying fuck about whether or not a chick is getting more action than they are, either consciously or subconsciously, so that's some mad mental gymnastics right there.

I went into this being completely in the Merlin camp. Then you brought in this divine goddess of intense and forbidden love. I doubt it’s a good idea and that is more encouragement than anything at this point. Why not make some waves and fulfill her fantasies? The making it work part... okay, I should say that this is just brainstorming: wouldn’t siblings share the greatest synergy in the MIU? Wouldn’t that potentially translate to better performance? Has it ever been tested? If Cass is already going to Merlin to ask for an assignment favor then why not ask for a test flight? I’d much rather spend a flight with her than doing a reflight or an alternate flight, even if she doesn’t ultimately get picked, just to see what happens. Hell, if she was our backseater and anon majority still doesn’t want that kind of relationship then it just opens the door to a more normal relationship with someone like based Merlin or whoever.

>>3431420
This. She’s too perfect.
>>
>>3430800
Cass wants us, who are we to deny her?

We're the one who loves her.
>>
>>3431762

Cass can't fly even a test flight with you- she's not trained at all on the wyvern, so everything a witch in back is supposed to do, she can't. And it's not a case where she could get a crash course from Merlin- the school is months long, and involves backseat time in trainer jets. Keep in mind, the reason the selection list is limited isn't because there's not a lot of witches, it's because there's not a lot of qualified witches- most witches in the fleet won't have gone through the Wyvern Systems Operator school. It's part of why Lotus, for example, is on the list despite being a reservist, or why there's IJN liasion witches on there.
>>
>>3431880
Why has a liaison from a country we aren't willing to sell Wyverns to gone through a certification course for Wyverns? Her special snowflake status as royalty shouldn't matter here.

> so everything a witch in back is supposed to do, she can't.
With the way the AI is shaping up, I don't think that's going to be relevant for too much longer. As long as she can be a battery, she'd be fine.
>>
>>3431954
Because she volunteered, she qualified, and the Imperial Japanese agreed to the conditions, based on her asking- that if she was selected for a crew, she'd serve with the USN for the duration of her career. Keep in mind, not a whole lot of witches both want to be in a wyvern and qualify for it.
>>
>>3431994
But why was she allowed to take the courses at all? The fact that we won't let them have Wyverns should have blocked her from qualifying on them.
>>
>>3431994
>she'd serve with the USN for the duration of her career.
I'm surprised they are willing to permanently give up such a powerful witch like her for nothing in return. In strikers she'd be worth a flight of witches on her own.
>>
>>3432024
Keep in mind what witches are- this is effectively the Japanese agreeing to lease a superweapon to the US for twenty plus years. Of course there's conditions to it- it's expected, were there to be a war, her aircraft would fly predominantly in the pacific, for example. But it's similar to any other closely allied foreign nation- while we may not sell the Wyvern to them, we'll allow their witches to fly as part of drake crews.

>>3432060
Well, think about it- this, in effect, binds the US and Japan tighter as allies. While Japan is still incredibly proud and strong, since 1989 they've given up a lot of claims on land that used to serve as their traditional industrial heartland (Korea, specifically). While they've gotten war reparations from the USSR in the form of all Russian island holdings in the north pacific and Bering sea (Which are uncontested) and most of the former Kamchataka Oblast (Which is- the UN has held transfer of the land in limbo for various reasons) the Japanese government is well aware that a large, belligerent China has been spending trillions on modernization and expansion of their military, with a fairly nationalist government at the helm.
>>
>>3431431
Shit, are you discouraging us from pursuing Cass or are you suggesting 5-toubun: witches edition?
>>
>>3432196
Considering how all of our sisters except Cass explicitly find her behavior weird as fuck, that's not an option.
>>
>>3431880
This makes sense. I wasn’t counting on the training being so extensive, though that does fit. It would’ve been cool to test the sibling MIU part. For uh, purely scientific reasons. Alright. Other than that, no real news! I guess that's mostly good, haha!

======================================================================================================================

“Entering range complex now.” Lotus intones from the back as you flash over the Alaskan tundra. Most of this part of the state fell under soviet occupation during the earliest phases of the war, and more than a few formerly soviet bases were ‘preserved’ as training aids. While it’s well in range of Soviet radars stationed on the Chukotka peninsula, it’s typically used for limited exercises- even given it’s size, encompassing almost three quarters of the Seward peninsula, it’s remoteness and the difficulty of supporting operations this far out mean it’s rarely used for anything but small-scale exercises, despite the authenticity.

It’s kind of unusual for you to be flying this far up, though, you think- you’re qualified, of course, for all flight conditions, unlimited cross country, and with the Wyvern’s AI, making a mistake would require effort. Something about this seems fishy to you though- even with Lotus’ impressive navigation capabilities, someone’s doing something here that isn’t just for you. You file the thought away for later- you’re sure you’ll find out at some point.

“Target airfield is forty miles out, on bearing zero one nine.” Lotus directs- you’d entered the range complex at a slight north-northwestern heading, coming in low with everything but passive sensors offline. “The range datalink is up for flight and weapons telemetry, but they’re not giving us anything.” She sighs. “We should have NIRTS sats, but I guess they can’t launch those for a test flight, huh? Multiple radar sites marked with passive sensors, four airborne, two land based. One’s ninety miles west of the target airfield, the other is three miles north.”

1/2
>>
The airborne radars are going to be Raptors or lightnings, at least- you doubt they’ll have parked an AWACS up there, but there may be Romeo lancers up there and just not radiating. That’s the problem with passive sensors- if the other guy is only listening too, you’re not going to know they’re there, and with the datalinks, a B-1R can shoot without ever going active. “What’s the commando’s ETA?”

“Twenty minutes before they’re in the range complex” Lotus responds. “MC-130J Callsign Deliverance.”

You nod- twenty minutes is plenty of time to work- an eternity, really. “How do we do this?” Lotus asks from behind you.

[] We’ll hit the airfield first and draw them into us, keep them there. They can’t ignore us if we’re parked above their airbase.

[x] We’ll hit the airborne radars first, they can’t do much without their fighters.

“We’re gonna hit the airborne radars first.” You say, pulling the wyvern into a turn and pushing the throttles forward, hovering just below supersonic.

“Ok.” Lotus says. “I can’t get an exact fix on the type of emitter, but they’re lightnings or king raptors for sure, since they share a type. Judging by emission strength, there’s two pairs, one about twenty miles north of our target airfield, the other about thirty miles east. The northern pair is nose on to us, the eastern pair looks like they’re going to converge with the northern set near Haycock. I don’t think they’ve seen us yet though.”

The AI warns you, however, that with your relative headings and attitudes, the northern pair will probably see you once they’re within about forty miles of you, give or take. Even nose to nose, they’re going to see something- though at that range you’re going to look pretty similar to a flock of birds or something along those lines. Still, that kind of contact will firm up, especially if they take an interest in you, and you have to assume they will.

And there’s only four radiating sets- there could well be far more up here, just listening passively. The AI waffles a bit between suggesting bringing your own powerful active sensor suite online and leaving it cold before dropping the thread and focusing on available data.

[] Order Lotus to bring the active sensors up- you want a look at the airspace, four fighters seems far too few.
[] Leave the active suite cold- your biggest advantage is that they don’t know you’re here yet, and you want to preserve that as long as possible.

[x] Leave the active suite cold- your biggest advantage is that they don’t know you’re here yet, and you want to preserve that as long as possible.

The trouble with active sensors is that, barring a few of them, there’s a plethora of detectors and sensors designed to turn them against their users. It’s part of why the wyvern is so scary to most fighter pilots around the world- her passive suite, coupled as it is to the AI, means that you’re gifted with damn near omnipotence in an area of operations when you’re all linked in with satellite and ground-based networks. Even without them, with the proper witch, you can detect any radiation- including that involved in hostile data nets- and form a picture of the battlespace that way, without ever revealing your own presence.

Still, with no BVR missiles- a restriction that’s really starting to become a hassle- there’s no reason to go active. If there’s other aircraft up here, you’ll have to deal with them as they show up, you realize. Instead you keep your nose pointed at the incoming air force fighters- the AI is cycling back and forth between lightnings and king raptors itself, their speed well within the capabilities for both, if a bit fast for lightnings just loitering in the airspace.

You stay low to close the distance- there’s not much terrain here, but climbing is going to highlight you as an item of interest, especially since you know they’ve seen you, at the very least- you can feel the skin-level microsensors buried in your fighter light up as radar waves wash across them rhythmically. You don’t dare change much yet, figuring that shoving in the afterburners or WEP, you’ll tip them off too soon, and even with the speed open yourself up to shots you don’t want to have to deal with. The seconds seem agonizingly slow.

Lotus calls a warning at the same time the AI stabs it into your awareness. “We’re spiked!” She calls. “One O’clock high, bearing zero three one at twenty three miles!” It’s followed seconds later by three more warnings- the original aircraft’s wingmate and the other pair, now turning to engage. “Bandits are accelerating, the second pair has gone hot!” Lotus warns, her voice conveying more than a little excitement. The AI vaguely warns you of a heart rate spike in your backseater, but squelches it as it recognizes the effects of adrenaline.

With only four bandits live- you can see one pair now, through the excellent electro-optical search system, the AI having tracked back down the line of bearing of the hostile radar to find the opposing aircraft- you’re reasonably sure of victory, even with them shooting first, as they no doubt will. Something is still bothering you, though about this- the two you can see are lightnings, probably up from Eielson, and you suspect the other two probably are as well. Four lightnings is kind of insulting, if you think about it, though you’re not sure if you feel insulted or that’s the wyvern.

“How we gonna do this?” Lotus asks.

[x] We’re gonna hit them hard and fast, before their backup shows up.

“We’re gonna hit them hard and fast.” You say, mentally checking your weapons load- sixteen sidewinders, about what you expected, plus full loads on all four guns. “They’ve got to have backup out there, I want to deal with them before it shows up.”

“Ok!” Lotus says responds. “Both groups have turned to engage! Weapons hot, on your trigger.”

The first pair of lightnings is coming in high and fast, probably looking to be able to trade height for additional launch space for AMRAAM simulators- against a wyvern, AIM-120 simulators are limited to twenty miles at the same altitude, and even then, unless they’re volleyed out, their probability to kill is very low- less than ten percent.

Still, that’s a lot more than you want to deal with for too long- you’ve got to get in there and get them turning against you- a lightning can’t fight a wyvern, even with four on one odds.

“Missiles!” Lotus warns as the closest pair take their shots. “Active radars, jamming is active, AI is handling defensive ECM! Notch right!”

You slam the wyvern into a right-hand turn, pushing the missiles into a direct perpendicular course- fooling their radars into squelching you from their return as ground clutter for a second. While the modern systems use home-on-jam, Wyvern ECM is strong enough to physically damage seekerheads- and, when guided by the ship’s AI, is incredibly difficult for even the AMRAAM to defeat. Still, you’re forced to break left as the two simulated rounds close to within a mile before sailing off to the south, their locks defeated and their seekers homing on phantoms generated by your defensive countermeasures.

“Tally ho.” You warn, seeing the pair of F-35s, already turning into the merge, as they dive in on you. Head to head like this, with a closure rate measured in multiple times the speed of sound, they flash past like a pair of bullets as you begin your turn to engage, the wyvern pulling through a hard left hand bank to acquire one of the lightnings reversing across your path. He’s too close for missiles, and he’s across your gunsights before you can get a shot into the lead box.

[x] He’s going to try to run us into his wingmate’s guns, break off.

You peg the move for the start of a thatch weave the second he starts it- you’d have recognized it even without the Wyvern’s AI and Lotus’ warning as she tracked the other lightning through his turn.

You yank back on the stick- one of the odd things about the MIU is that it removed the direct mental control of the older VDNI link- you use pedals, stick, and throttles, same as any other pilot and crack the throttle open, pushing into afterburners but stopping short of WEP. The vertical move throws the thatch weave all out- a lightning can’t climb against a wyvern, and there’s not much vertical space for them to evade at this point- their best option is to break and drag you into their squadron mates, a mere ten miles out and closing fast.

You keep the stick pulled back, the wyvern flipping inverted as you complete the top end of a loop, hanging inverted for a second as you do, the AI tracking the pair of lightnings as they break away and go head to head with their partners in the other pair of F-35s. You’re already tracking for a sidewinder lock as you do- getting both of the original lightnings long enough to send a missile at each of them. The angle isn’t great, and only one ‘connects’, the trailing fighter rolling out and away, climbing out of the fight.

1/2
>>
The eastern pair starts maneuvering as soon as they can, pulling you into a dogfight as the single plane survivor of the original pair banks around in a sweeping turn to reengage. Three on one odds aren’t good in most cases as you merge into a rolling furball at ten thousand feet- in most cases, it’s asking for trouble. Of course, in most cases there’s not an almost-sentient AI in the jet with you, tracking all three fighters effortlessly, merging data into what can best be described as limited precognition. You can see speeds, weights, rate of fuel consumption- you can even detect that they are linked further back with additional aircraft, all of which are desperately searching for a lock long enough to release their own weapons at you.

“Witches!” Lotus warns as you push the wyvern through a brutal break turn, slewing the tail of your jet out to cut the turn even tighter. “Two pair, four bogies! closing fast!” The AI confirms a second later, merging available data with the Wells sensor and painting a picture of four witches in unknown strikers closing quickly. Given the rate of closure, you’re guessing F-22s, but you know a very few of the produced Black Widow superstrikers aunt Merlin made during the war ended up up here when the USAF elected to purchase them.

“Deliverance reports he’s fifteen minutes out.” Lotus warns as you yank the fighter through another high G turn, rippling a pair of sidewinders off at one of the lightnings. “They want to know if they need to come in high or low on their drop zone!”

Wasn't getting rid of the manual controls the point of the VDNI Ghost?
>>
>>3444206
That's what I thought. In doing so, it was supposed to increase reaction time, shown when the legless girl hovered a fighter vertically, which was a tipping point for Frank. But that was honestly one main of the reasons I didn't like the system. It made flying feel too sterile. So I'm certainly not complaining.
>>

>Wasn't getting rid of the manual controls the point of the VDNI Ghost?

Yeah this seems like a gigantic step backwards.
>>
>>3444206
I thought the same thing
>>
>>3444327
Should have mentioned, I am actively concerned about needing manual controls in a machine as agile as the Wyvern. I don't want G-forces sealing a foot to the pedal when we need to lift it.
>>
>>3444327
>>3444330

I would imagine that pilots actually weren't really fans of the direct mental control of the VDNI, you might actually be able to get a better feel for what sort of shape that your fighter is in with HOTAS setup rather than just mental controls. The Wyvern likely has Fly-by-Light (which is the same as Fly-By-Wire but it uses fiber optics instead of wires) and backup hydraulics which would allow you to feel your plane.
>>
>>3444333
>you might actually be able to get a better feel for what sort of shape that your fighter is in with HOTAS setup rather than just mental controls.
I wouldn't be surprised. A decent chunk of car guys prefer manually operated systems because you can feel feedback better.
>likely has Fly-by-Light (which is the same as Fly-By-Wire but it uses fiber optics instead of wires)
That sounds like a bad idea. Fiber optic is much more fragile and overall less damage resistant, and over those distances the difference between electrical and optical would be negligible.
>>
>>3444339
Good point, I actually hadn't thought of the fragility of Fiber-Optics. So the Wyvern likely has three control systems, a Fly-by-Wire system with redundant backup and a Hydraulic system in case shit really gets fucked. That said, it could be possible with the insane maneuvers that a Wyvern is capable of doing that VDNI goes to full mental control if the g-forces go above a certain threshold. Its also possible that the Fenrir (anyone know what its exact dimensions are?) might have full VDNI control, with all three engines having three-dimensional vectored thrust and likely Pulse-Detonation Bypass Turbofans which can provide a significant boost to power without increasing fuel consumption.
>>
>>3444346
AFAIK there isn't an exact size listed for the Fenrir. See pic related, fan-made but looks accurate from having played a majority of the AC games. Just reference the COFFIN updated fighters with their real counterparts, should get you a rough size.

There was also a shot in the cutscene following the final mission of Ace Combat X, after the crowd wrecks the Fenrir on stage with people clambering on and around the broken plane. That one comes across as QUALITY though, take it as you will.

I am thinking that the Fenrir might be carrier capable, its just that its in the same size division as the beauty in the pic. The huge A-5 Vigilante Supersonic Carrier Borne Nuclear Bomber that was 23.32-meters long, with a wingspan of 16.16-meters, and 5.91-meters tall that weighed 28.6-metric tons at maximum takeoff weight.

Fenrir doesn’t exist in the reboot, as far as I’m aware
>>
>>3444437
Ghost said the Fenrir is still around, just at Groom Lake.
>>
>>3444437
It does, it's just covered in ink and probably undergoing more development. It got sent back after we used it to beat Robo-Stalin. Non-canon run had it ready to go, though.

>>3444384
Went into Photoshop, copied the F-16XF's wingspan from the pic I posted and moved it to Fenrir. I don't doubt you. Uh, also bare in mind I don't really consider math my strong suit...

F-16 IRL has a wingspan of around 9.8 meters. The XF probably has a different wingspan given its wing shape, so this is more of a guesstimate.

It's a tad bit more than two wings across, so it's in the ballpark of around a 20 meter wingspan, and would probably be smaller for carrier operations with wings folded.

Damn, now I'm curious.

Well, I'm already using the F-16 wingspan as a reference, so...
Its a little less than 3 F-16 wings stacked end to end, so around, I wanna say, 28 or 29 meters in length. It's larger than the A-5!

For the hell of it, put it alongside the advanced Blackbird in the pic as well.
Blackbird's length IRL is 32.74 meters.
Fenrir's about a tad more than the length of it's own nose shorter than the Blackbird. Yeesh...
>>
>>3444520
Good fucking God! That makes the Fenrir the world's largest combat fighter, taking the title away from the Tu-128 "Fiddler"!
>>
>>3444333
>>3444339
>That sounds like a bad idea. Fiber optic is much more fragile and overall less damage resistant, and over those distances the difference between electrical and optical would be negligible.
For what I've read, modern planes use a hardened version of usual Ethernet cables to connect various subsystems.
>>
>>3444588

Now that's rather interesting, considering the speed of modern Ethernet cables, particularly the new Cat 7 standard has speeds of 10-Gbps
>>
>>3444598
That's throughput. Latency is more important here, and afaik there's not a notable difference between the CATs in terms of latency.
>>
That's actually pretty interesting, though I wonder what the 411 is on the Valkyrie Strikers, are those in service or no?

This. Latency and redundancy. For example, A629 data bus standard for civilian airliners is essentially a twisted pair version of 10Base2 with the bandwidth requirement of only 2 Mbps. But the whole thing uses three bi-directional buses for redundancy, has special terminators to prevent signal reflection and uses couplers to connect periphery directly instead of cutting the wire, just for a start. I can imagine the requirements for military hardware are even stricter.
>>
>>3444645

I can imagine that would be true in terms of redundancy. Regardless, I remember how Merlin back during Strikers 89 figured out how to put AMRAAMs into Striker Units, I wonder how much that has since improved.
>>
>>3444634
> though I wonder what the 411 is on the Valkyrie Strikers, are those in service or no?
You do know this is thread number six of the reboot, right? It's been a subplot so far but the long and short of it is that Merlin has been working on them and is at the point where she is looking for test witches.
>>
>>3444665

Huh, I must have missed that conversation when scrolling through the various replies.

Regardless, the mention of SAM units that are witch-killers got me thinking about other possible units before the S-300, S-400, and Griffon Railguns. My research turned up two rather old missile systems: the S-200 and 2K11 Turg. They aren't the most accurate things in the world but who needs accuracy when the missile for the S-200 hefts a 478-pound warhead while the 2K11 Turg hefts a 330-pound warhead, for reference the S-300 from Strikers 89 would've hefted about a 293-pound warhead.

Plus I can imagine that both the Tunguska and Shilka would be quite lethal in the role considering how much steel they can throw. Plus Tunguska has missiles!

[x] Have him go in low, try to minimize his exposure.

“Have him stay low! Low!” You call, wheeling your fighter through a crushing roll as the witches merge and watching the lightning defeat the simulated sidewinders. While they both miss, they’ve forced him away from the fight in his defensive turn- not for the first time, you wish you had the newest agiles instead of the more common sidewinders. With their improved maneuverability and the ability to maintain a datalink with the launch platform, you’re pretty sure they’d have connected.

You’ve already got what could be counted as a full assessment on the witches within the first second- two of them are wearing war-era Black Widow II strikers. Merlin’s superstrikers- the armored ammunition linkage belt connecting their weapons to cavernous bays in their engine units gives it away more quickly even than the captive stinger missiles mounted on their wing pylons. They’ll probably both have sidewinders in their bays, too, you note, though that’s impossible to tell for sure.

With four witches in the mix, the odds against you are significantly longer- and these four have clearly fought together for a while- every time you start to bring your own guns to bear on one, another drives you away. They’re not desperate, but it feels like they’re struggling to get you penned in- these first couple seconds, you know, are critical in a fight, and if they can’t hold onto the initiative, they’re in trouble.

“Morgan, the lightnings are breaking off!” Lotus calls- and indeed, all three are separating from the fight, breaking west. They couldn’t outrun you in normal circumstances, but with the witches here it’s going to be a challenge to catch and kill them. Still, their motive is clear- at least to the AI, which predicts they’re splitting away while the witches are still here in an effort to down the transport- they’ll have seen him for sure on their radars already, and he’s got to be in the training range and so be fair game by now.

You recognize the tactics after a second- part of you wants to laugh at them, too- how could you not recognize them? Ice and Katya wrote them- you were there when they were going over the first PowerPoint for it. One witch stays glued to you as much as possible, trying to ‘lasso’ you- to use her rifle to herd you into her partner who sets up the killshot, while the other two stick close enough to make sure that there’s always going to be a witch able to get her gun on you in case you slip the chaser, and to engage and destroy missiles you fire before they can get moving. The chaser keeps you from killing the shooter, the two standoff witches keep you from killing the chaser, and the shooter keeps you too busy to kill the standoff witches. It’s simple, effective, and standard practice taught to all witches when dealing with superfighters, especially those with integral witch crew.

That they were never successful in employing them against your father is another matter- of course, you aren’t him, and don’t have the mother of modern superfighters behind you right now. You can defend against the tactic easily enough- defeating it though...

You know what this is, of course. Same thing, you suspect, all of your workup cycles are going to be. They’re playing games, pushing you. The know your profile- you’re competitive and hate losing, and they’re looking for that spark of what dad was- that hair on fire wildman, the warhound that can’t be killed.

You’re not him, of course. Maman made sure of that.

There’s defensive options open to you. Normally, you’d break away, shove in full war emergency power, and separate like that, relying on the massive power of the two turbines behind you to outrun the four witches. You’ve done as much before- day before yesteday, in fact. But you’ve been learning, too- at least, you’re pretty sure it’s you that’s drinking in the data and assessing it this fast. The witch behind you is in a black widow II striker, her long red hair flowing behind her as she flies with her rifle stretched out front. A gilboa snake you note with some surprise- the double barreled AR is a rather unusual sight.

Her partner, turning nearby, is setting up her kill box- a space where, once you enter, she’s got you cold, Lotus’ shield or no. The system isn’t perfect though, you know- even with the nearly bottomless pit of ammunition your chaser has, she’s still reliant on you behaving defensively, and, if you don’t, her ability to rapidly corral you.

Dad fought like a wild animal- fangs out and making his aircraft do things it really had no right to do. Something of that’s in you too of course- but you didn’t grow up being raised by a pair of veterans of the southeast Asian conflict, you grew up being raised by the mother of night. You learned very quickly that wild passion and fury worked- but only if you knew when and how to channel it. Maman made you learn. Out of fear, maybe, but she made you learn.

And so you slam the throttles into WEP, getting a surprised squeak out of Lotus as the wyvern suddenly demands- and finds- a lot more of her magical reserve. The witch behind you reacts with panic as you slide the fighter around her attempts to lasso you back in, the AI aiding Lotus in locking out her pathetic electronics suite- she couldn’t even acheive a heater lock for one of her stingers at this point. You’re calling up guns even as the other witch goes to break away, the jet plumes of her strikers turning purple as she dumps energy into them in an attempt to climb over your gunsights. You can feel the other two arrowing in, in an effort to either get you to break away or acheive a kill on you if you don’t- but they’re seconds out of gun range, and the blonde hanging in front of you doesn’t have that long, even as her M249 swings around in a guns-defensive move.

The range computers record her death even as you roll under her, the small red light on her wrist MFD visible, if only just, by your rear-mounted EO cameras.

[x] Continue to separate and go after the lightnings now! Mission is a wash if they get that MC-130!

You leave WEP locked in, rapidly punching past mach 2 and still accelerating, the force of it pushing you back into your ejection seat. Even with their fantastic thrust to weight, strikers will struggle to race a wyvern- you can see the witches behind you pushing it to keep pace, let alone close the distance. Meanwhile, your time to intercept the three lightnings- now breaking off and getting low, in an effort to evade you- shrinks to a few seconds as you slash across the Alaskan sky. You drop out of WEP as you close, warming up the sidewinders as you do, latching on to one of the F-35s with contemptuous ease and sending a pair of the deadly missiles at him. You’re rewarded with a simulated kill- flares and his defensive break trashed one missile shot, but the other flew true and, had it been real, would have shredded the back quarter of the little fighter.

The other two break away from you, pushing west and away from the MC-130’s entry point while the three witches are pushing to catch up. They will soon, you know- their sidewinders are probably already in range, but, like most witches, they seem to be favoring their guns.

The lightning drivers aren’t bad- honestly, they’re pretty good, everything considered, and the two of them are pushing their mounts to the limits to play for time and give the witches a chance to reengage. But F-35s, even pushed to their functional limits, aren’t a match for a Wyvern operating at it’s theoretical limits- you get a guns kill on the trailing lightning as the witches slide back up, a simulated burst of tracer fire flashing past your right side. The lightning, low and fast, is scrambling for the southern range border. Once he’s out, that’s it- you won’t have killed him, but he can’t re-enter the range, either. Of course, you can always go for a shot- but with the witches back there, that’s going to be a lot more difficult, and chasing him out of the range means you’ll be better able to defend yourself on the way. You could also break and engage the witches again- but that still leaves this guy alive and able to go after the 130.

[] Go for the kill- you’re proving a point to the brass, here.
[] Chase him out- you may be proving a point, but you’re not going to risk it if you don’t need to.

>>
[x] Chase him out- you may be proving a point, but you’re not going to risk it if you don’t need to.

Sparing a quick glance back at the witches, you stay glued to the lightning as he heads for the range exit. You’re well aware, by now, that the ‘exercise’ wasn’t really that important to the brass, and that these guys aren’t going to mess with the 130- and never were, unless you’d entirely ignored them. At least, it seems that way- this F-35 pilot is doing nothing if not burning wildly for the range boundary, less than ten miles away- at these speeds, a matter of seconds. The witches behind you can’t maneuver for a good shot either, simply because you’re not willing to give them the chance to go for the kill. Instead you break away as the Lightning crosses the range boundary, going ‘dead’ in your display as he does so. As long as he spent on the afterburners to drag you out this way, he’s going to have to recover at Nome- of course, with as long as you were on the WEP, you may have to as well.

“Deliverance reports he’s twelve minutes from his drop zone.” Lotus warns from the back. “He’s in the range complex now.”

You nod, evading another long-range burst of simulated tracers from the witches behind you. They’re not likely to leave you alone- you suspect they were told to stay on you regardless of any other conditions until either they’d gotten you or you’d gotten all of them. “We’re at bingo fuel for Elmendorf.” Lotus further warns. “We’ve got fifteen minutes at military power if we want to make Nome, less if we go back to war emergency.”

[] We’ve got to hit the airbase target before the commandos jump- we’ll have to use WEP to have the separation from the witches to do it, too.
[] We’re going to stay in it with these three- we may miss the airbase objective, but we have to deal with the witches.

I second this decision, we don't have the fuel to hit WEP and go streaking towards the airbase, besides we don't know if anyone is packing Agiles which for all we know are likely equal to the Python-5 which is an infrared missile with BVR capability thanks to having Lock-on after Launch or LOAL with infrared imaging + electro-optical guidance!

Yeah it does seem like some people aren’t on the same page behind the scenes. It’s like the cadre are just giving us your typical LARP scenarios and the brass is only interested in how much we can kill in one go. Honestly? We are an air superiority fighter and should be focused on just that. Any realistic scenario would have a different aircraft with a more suitable role escort in that c130 and hit the airfield while we dominate the airspace. We don’t have to play it like Frank to still show that we are very capable of doing just as well as him, if it better. I can barely comprehend why taking bombs is even an option when we could’ve stayed up for longer.
>>
>>3446489
>Any realistic scenario would have a different aircraft with a more suitable role escort in that c130 and hit the airfield while we dominate the airspace.
Any IDEAL scenario you mean.

War doesn't let you use your IDEAL plans anon.

>I can barely comprehend why taking bombs is even an option when we could’ve stayed up for longer.
BECAUSE THATS THE MISSION YOU DUMB FUCK.
>>
>>3446489

Yeah, that is what we same to be the case. But if we go for the airbase, we'll be looking at a Deadstick landing in a bird that we have little knowledge on for unpowered flight characteristics and likely makes the F-35 Lightning II look cheap. I think that we might want to call Bingo Fuel out to the range controller, because we're down to the minimum fuel load where we can still make an airfield without running out of gas.
>>
>>3446570
One thing people seem to be forgetting is that theres an airbase right in front of us, that's about to be under the control of friendly forces if we do out job right in getting them there, which we can then land on...
>>
>>3446583

True, alright here's a third option. Lets extend out at WEP or afterburners and hit the airbase objectives. If the Witches stay on us like I think they will, then the enemy AAA and SAMs won't be able to engage because of the risk for friendly fire.
>>
>>3446583
I'm pretty sure that landing there is a guaranteed fail for this mission. As landing at an enemy controlled airbase in a wartime scenario would be a fast-track ticket to becoming a POW and the enemy (assumed to be china) getting the most lethal weapon in the US inventory.
>>
>>3446595
You miss the part where we've got a planeload of commandos about to hit this airbase and bring it under our control?

Fucks sake, does no one read anymore?
>>
>>3446583
As long as we can destroy enough of the base for mission siccess, without cratering the runway.
>>
>>3446599
A plane load of commandos isn't going to secure an airbase in time for a wyvern to land. This isn't Ace Combat where an airbase instantly becomes fully usable the moment a friendly unit arrives. Even if that team has witches in strikers. Best case scenario, the wyvern remains in place while everybody scrambles to secure it, and worst case scenario is that some giggling fuck with an RPG damages it or destroys it, making recovery a lot harder. Either way, it's a dumb idea to land on that airbase, and we will definitely fail the mission if we do.
>>
>>3446623
>This isn't Ace Combat where an airbase instantly becomes fully usable the moment a friendly unit arrives.
Only thing that needs to be useable is the giant strip of concrete thats not running from anyone.

Also considering airbases and airports have been taken and been up and running during and just after the assault that argument don't fly.
>>

>>
>>3446527
Oh, so you think the US would risk a c130 full of troops with just the wyvern around in a real scenario? Okay. It was established before the flight that this could be done with guns. Calm down.
>>
>>3446657
Considering they've risked more with less, its entirely feasible, but the point you missed is you can't tailor your training to blatantly ignore the fact that your opponent won't let you just have a Wyvern stick to being a Air Dominance fighter, the theoretical war in this situation doesn't give a fuck what plane your in, it just gives you a situation you have to respond to.

If you just so happen to be in a wyvern in that situation, you better be able to at least try and adapt instead of going "No thanks Mr Universe, my plane isn't optimized for that roleset so we're just not going to go and fight today, is that okay with you Mr Enemy?

I get what you’re saying, but flying that far to perform a role the aircraft isn’t designed for? Seems a little unrealistic. I guess that’s just a difference in opinion.

Didn’t the briefing before the start of the last mission involve a quote somewhere to the effect of “we already know the LT can hit ground targets” and that they were looking to see some more airspace dominance? I get that it wasn’t this mission, but I can’t shake the feeling that we’ve been spending the majority of our time avoiding protracted dogfighting. It just doesn’t feel right.
>>
>>3446734
Yeah, Lotus is nice, and if I expected normal air dominance ops, I'd consider her.
But this is Strikers. Shit be CRAZY, and "just" performing to on-paper maximum spec is less of a game changer than being invisible, or having a "fuck you" shield powered by YAMATO DAMASHII that makes physics your bitch.
Now don't get me wrong, what Lotus can do is HUGE. But it doesn't completely undercut the enemy's ability to do us harm like Danielle's super-stealth or Kyou's super-shield.

It's the usual polarization that seems to happen with everything. Morgan needs to be his own person and play differently, but anon is taking "play differently from frank" as "don't do anything frank does whatsoever."
>>
>>3447078
If they want us to focus on dogfighting then they shouldn't give us missions where they say they want us to hit a ground target as well. Morgan is highly mission oriented so it makes sense he's doing what they tell him to.
>>
>>3447095
>If they want us to focus on dogfighting then they shouldn't give us missions where they say they want us to hit a ground target as well.

Aight, like two things with that. A mission can have multiple objectives that need to be achieved. Having a ground target that needs to be hit as part of a mission does not preclude us from having an aerial dominance objective as well, as we did right here. Yeah hitting the target is our mission, but the second objective is for us to maintain and hold air superiority so those commandos can get inserted.

>>3424333
>“Excellent. We’ll get clothing issue sorted if it becomes a necessity.” He says, then launches into the briefing. “For this one, you’re taking a bit of a trip. Your mission is to penetrate simulated hostile airspace in
>the ATR and destroy targets at the granite mountain airport, then maintain air superiority long enough for an army special operations team to insert in the test region safely, then exit the test range.”

So yes we need to hit the targets, but I think they're more concerned with us maintaining air superiority so those commandos don't get shot down. And those witches can absolutely do that if we leave them alone.
>>

>So yes we need to hit the targets, but I think they're more concerned with us maintaining air superiority so those commandos don't get shot down. And those witches can absolutely do that if we leave them alone.

I agree with that sentiment. But were is the sun in relation to us? We are in a dogfight against Witches or will be in a few seconds, lets cut back from WEP, got to full military power and get into the sun then bounce them using guns. Plus I bet with all the moving at full afterburner that they've been doing that those Witches are getting tired.

Ok guys, votes called!
>>
[x] We’ve got to hit the airbase target before the commandos jump- we’ll have to use WEP to have the separation from the witches to do it, too.

You’ve got to hit the airbase, you realize- given travel time, you’ll be dropping iron on it less than ten minutes before the commandos jump, and ignoring it isn’t an option, as much as you may want to tangle with the witches.

They’ve got to be getting tired, you realize- you can see one’s legs droop a bit before she straightens back out as you perform another evasive roll. While all the use of war emergency power can’t be easy on Lotus back there, she’s not complaining, and your fuel state isn’t quite as dire as she predicts- you can still make Elmendorf if you break off now, and you’ve even got a couple minutes if you go for best endurance speed on the way there, instead of military cruise.

You don’t worry about how you know that as you punch in WEP again, the sudden acceleration smashing you back into your seat again as the turbines howl. The witches try, gamely, to match the acceleration, but you called it right- they look like they’d struggle to match even afterburners, let alone full WEP. The distance opens up like a shot- they’re miles back before your acceleration even starts to slow.

“We can’t drop those bombs while we’re supersonic.” Lotus warns. “And we’re not lined up right for the best pattern according to the computer.” She sounds a little tired, but still in it- she doesn’t yawn or anything audible, anyway. “The witches are breaking off. I think you wore them out.”

“Deliverance?”

“Eight minutes from his drop zone.” She warns. “They’re going in near the airbase, so if you want to make a max-points run on it, we’re only going to get one chance before we’ll have to break off if you want to ride close escort on him on approach to the drop zone. And remember he’s got to leave the range complex for this to be a complete success.”

SPAAGS aren't super-hard to evade. They are unguided munitions after all.
>>
>>3447948

Thing is, I read somewhere that odds of hitting with radar guided SPAAGs was like one-in-fifty or something like that, I might be misremembering. But the thing is, they are going to shoot a lot more than fifty rounds at you.
>>
>>3447976
Takes a lot more than one hit to down a plane with a gun.
>>
>>3447982

Not true, 30mm HE shells contain a decent amount of explosive filler and if you get hit will often deal catastrophic damage. Plus with the rates of fire involved, unless you get extremely lucky, you won't take one hit, you will take several. To put this further into perspective, it takes just five 30mm HE shells to bring down a B-17, a Tunguska or similar has a fire rate in the thousands and would just rip your fighter apart.
>>
>>3447994
Most SPAAGs these days utilize flak type shells with tungsten pellets inside for maximum damage effect.

With shields the Wyvern can weather the worst of it, but we don't want to sit under fire from a full battery for any length of time if we don't have to. Because there's never just one SPAAG of course, and most modern machines also have SAMs affixed to them.
>>
>>3448025

*Looks at Tungsuka with its eight SAMs and two 30mm cannons with a rate-of-fire of 5,000-rounds per minute combined* No shit and I think that thing will tear apart anything.
>>
>>3448029
Now imagine eight of them firing on the same target at once.
That's how many are in a Russian SPAA battery.
>>
[x] We’ll settle for less than full points on the airbase, I’d rather be able to deal with any popup targets on the drop

As much as you hate it, you do have to admit your options are limited, and there simply isn’t the time to get a max score on the air base target and to ride close support for the dropship as he does his run. You squelch the part of you that wants to start examining that right away- you can worry about better ways to have done this after you land.

With the runway oriented north to south, you’d prefer to make a run along the same axis- but you’re coming in from the southwest, and the commandos are going to drop to the east of here. You line up your run to hit most of the soviet-built aircraft revetments and part of the runway- now just packed dirt, instead of the steel planks of the soviet era. The rippling light show of explosions behind you is almost beautiful to look at as your cluster bombs do their work, further tearing up and destroying the already long since hulked soviet aircraft.

“Good hit!” Lotus calls from the back. “Wow those are pretty to watch go off. I’ll have an assessment in a second for you. Steer one-zero-nine, Deliverance is ten miles out, my scope is clear, there’s nothing emitting out there.”

1/2
>>
Sure enough, out in the distance, you can see the dark grey transport plane as it lumbers through the sky, banking gently left, almost nose-to-nose with you. You spread a bit to the right, intending to pass along it’s left side at a quarter of a mile. Wheeling back around, you watch the SF troopers jumping out of the lowered rear ramp as you form up, below and to the left of the transport. One of the army commandos waves at you from his parachute on the way down.

“They’re out!” Lotus calls, somewhat unnecessarily. “Deliverance is exiting the range, heading two eight zero. There’s still no emitters. Looks like that’s it!”

You’re not so sure, and remain paranoid up until Lotus announces you’ve exited the range complex. “AWACS and range control confirms this exercise has concluded!” She calls, sounding happy enough to make the call. “I’m pretty sure we could make Elmendorf, but we’re pretty low on gas.” She warns. “Eielson is closer, and I know we can make Nome or Kotzebue.”

Either of the big air force posts would be your best option for their facilities- you could land, refuel, and get airborne again with the shortest turn around, and they’re likely equipped to handle a Wyvern. Nome and Kotzebue are closer, but you’re sure neither base is going to have the specialized support equipment for your fighter- which means at the very least you’d have to leave the onboard auxiliary generator online for however long it takes to fuel up. It also means there’d be considerable more drain on Lotus- she’d have to stay in the fighter with the generator running.

“Tankers?” You ask.

“Elmendorf can put up a KC-130.” She says. “But I think we’d still have to refuel on the way home off that carrier again if we did that, and there’s a weather system forming along the coast. Nothing major, but it looks like it’s pretty rapidly forming, the warning only just came in now.”

“Anything from home plate?” You ask- she’s going to be in charge of all long-range communications in operations, and it’s handled that way in practice too. If Miramar has put in a call redirecting you, she’s the one that would have handled it.”

“Negative.” She says. “The weather doesn’t look too bad yet, but if it keeps getting worse it might be too much to fly through. It’s weird though, I don’t remember the weather guys saying anything about a low up this way.”

[] This was supposed to be an out and back- call for the tanker out of Elmendorf, we’ll risk the weather

Weather is a fickle mistress, but we also need the facilities, they could possibly have the 130 give us enough juice to ensure we get there and then land.

That said, I can't help but wonder if there's something big going on. While weather systems can form out of nowhere, I can't help but feel there's some space squid involvement in this. Given the proximity to where the Kitty Hawk went down and the fact Dreadnoughts were involved with that.

I was wrong, there are only six, but even removing two it's still terrifying to think about should you be the only thing they have a firing solution on.

Yeah, that's a scary thought, plus the Griffon EML likely has the ability to datalink with AWACs, its likely shooting 100-gram projectiles at five or six KPS since its designed to kill planes and witches, it needs to do two things, one hit hard and have a fast rate of fire if it misses, I wouldn't be surprised if a single barrel could manage three-rounds per second it might not seem like a lot but considering the amount of energy behind each one it would be fucking terrifying.
>>
>>3448092
Possible, that or its something derived from their tech. There's also the possibility of salvage being taken off the seafloor, and combined with the old Tripod in the one-off but likely canonical Parawitches run from April Fools it might mean something.

The AIR-84 is just a harpoon anti-ship missile with the guidance system replaced with a bigger warhead. [x] We’ll head for Elmendorf AFB- there’s no reason to risk it anymore.

You look at the options, deciding that Elmendorf AFB is probably your best option, given the circumstances.

“Call Elmendorf, tell them we’re on the way there.” You order Lotus. “And then punch a call back to Miramar and let them know we’re diverting for weather.”

“Got it!” Lotus responds brightly. “Take heading one two four and climb to fifteen thousand feet, drop airspeed to three hundred knots for best endurance.”

You nod, executing her instructions and watching the Alaskan countryside shrink below you as you climb. There’s a gray shelf of clouds out there, but nothing dangerous looking- merely early summer rains, you think. Still, you keep an eye on them as they slide past, out to the west of you, over the tundra.

Elmendorf AFB hasn’t changed much since the war- there’s been modernization, of course, but little in the way of expansion of what was, at one point, the largest airbase in the northern hemisphere. There’s a little of everything here- and you can see heads swivel to track your jet as your wheels kiss the pavement of the runway. Even for a major post like this, a wyvern is a rare sight. Still, there’s almost everything in the USAF lineup out here- King raptors, a few lightnings, and strike eagles all share the ramp with AWACS aircraft, C-130s, and C-17, with a pair of KC-10s nearby.

You’re directed to a small hangar near the south end of the runway and instructed to shut down there. A humvee parks itself outside the hangar door as you pop the canopy, surprised at the relative warmth of the air outside. A witch in battledress steps out of the passenger side, planting her fists on her hips and frowning briefly. Her red hair shows a couple gray streaks, and you put her age right around that of your Maman, or any of your sister’s mothers- a vet, probably. Her frown is gone in an instant, though, and she smirks as you climb out of the cockpit, saluting her smartly- the three stars on her collar are all shined to a brilliant finish.

She returns it, looking up at Lotus as she exits the aircraft, then back down to you. “Afternoon, Lieutenant. I’m general Holly Wilkins.” She says. “I’m gonna guess you don’t plan to stay here long?”

[] No, ma’am. We’re just here to refuel and get a weather fix on the storms to the south before we head home.

[x] No, ma’am. We’re just here to refuel and get a weather fix on the storms to the south before we head home.

You shake your head, looking over at Lotus as she joins you. “No, ma’am. We’re just here to refuel and get a weather fix on the storms to the south.”

She nods. “I’d figured as much. Come on, we’ll head over to the weather shop, my guys will take care of fueling your bird.” She ushers you into the back of the humvee, telling her driver to head to their weather building. “So I suppose I’ve got you to thank for some of my girls spending the night in Nome?” She asks, a slight smile tugging at the corners of her mouth.

“Yes ma’am.” You say, nodding, and she laughs.

“I warned them about you.” She says. “The navy’s going to be pushing you hard, and I told them not to play around. Oh well, maybe they’ll learn their lesson, the quarters up there aren’t the most comfortable.” She shakes her head and laughs.

The drive to the weather station doesn’t take that long, and with the general escorting you, you get the most up to the minute picture of the weather. “Wow.” Lotus says, looking at it, before stabbing a finger at one cell of clouds over the Seattle area. “Is that a thunderstorm?”

“Looks like it. It’s not that big though.” The general points out. “If you stay out to sea you should be able to end around it. I’d be more worried about the system west of here. I’ve never seen a storm like that before. If you want to get out of here, you’re going to have to hustle.” She says.

You nod. “You don’t think there’s gonna be a problem with it, do you ma’am?”

She shrugs. “I’ll be shutting down anything but critical flight ops while it blows through, we don’t usually have to do that in the summer. If you want to get out of here, you need to be gone before that system is within thirty miles. Last thing I want to see is a drake go down in a microburst. Head back out to the truck, we’ll get you out of here.”

You nod, keeping an eye on Lotus as you head back to the humvee, updated weather maps in hand. She doesn’t look too tired, even as you arrive with the ground crew unhooking the fuel lines. You look at your watch- it’s only been about twenty minutes, so they must have really been hustling. You’re rolling a second later, having signed off on the paperwork, noting that your tanks are all full- including the spare. You’ll have enough fuel to make Miramar, so long as you don’t have to divert much more to avoid weather.

1/2
>>
You get off the ground with a few minutes to spare- Lotus tracks the storm system as it rolls in, shutting down flight operations at the base less than a hundred fifty miles after you’ve gotten back in the air. It’s a quiet flight back, which you’re ok with, and the sun is already starting to crawl beneath the horizon as you enter your glide slope for the naval air station finally.

The air marshal guides you to your spot outside the hangar- though you note with some surprise the vought factory heavy lifter is on site again, parked nearby. The ground crew looks split, with the chief over near the jumbo, while his s econd in command lurks nearby as you shut down and pop the canopy.

“Oh man, it’s good to be home!” Lotus says from the back, standing up and stretching, arching her back as she does so. “What’s for dinner?”

You laugh- you haven’t quite figured that out either, but you suspect you’ll have company for it, as you spy your aunt down with the crew, her familiar out. She looks up at your jet- and you- while occasionally looking back over her shoulder at the jumbo. Part of you wonders what’s onboard, while you suspect you already know.
>>
And that's it for the Week! We got where I figured we needed to, so that works out well, and you won't be having dinner with Lotus in Anchorage! haha. Guess you guys will have to think about that a bit then, where you want to go, how you wanna do that!

I'd be more afraid of the Aussie witches with spooder familiars.
>>
>>3448512
You ask that as if it's not already something the world does.

the world is thankful there are so few Australians, relatively speaking- it means there's fewer Australian hellwitches.

Any American Tank Witches with wolverine Familiars?

True it does, until it happens, though its rare when it does.

I recommend everyone watch this, its about the Vulcan that managed to bomb the Argies before the Brit surface task force was within range of them, forcing the Argies to back off and letting the Brits get within range of the Falklands.

Friendly reminder that witchy backseat selection =/= waifu routelock.

Tbqh based on what we've seen so far I'd nominate Kyou for our systems operator, though as far as the waifuwar goes, I don't feel I'd really be disappointed if Morgan ended up with any of the three shown so far.

Do Wolverines only exist in the US (in the wild). Can Witches only have a familiar that lives in their country ?
>>
>>3451778
Washington, Idaho, and Montana have wolverines.
>>
>>3451778

Not necessarily, but it's pretty uncommon to have a familiar that isn't found in the wild in their country. It's more common among royalty and the oldest witch families- ones that can track themselves back to ancient Egypt, for example, may have familiars that aren't found in the country they live in now.

>>3451776

You probably shouldn't do that.
>>
>>3452010
Does that mean there is the potential for extinct animals to be familiars (i.e. wooly mammoths, various bird species, etc.)?
>>
>>3452108

Not really anymore, no. the only real cases of finding familiars you don't see in the wild are going to be limited to your royal families that have been around forever- the Egyptian royal bloodlines, for example, or the old Chinese nobility. Even then, it's not super common- Ice, for example, is technically an Imperial witch, but she's got an arctic fox as a familiar.

I mean, so far the only sexual tension she has is with the plane.

I feel like there would just be nothing mysterious or surprising about any relationship with her.

Like, I can imagine debriefs after the fact talking about how to improve alignment on the next romp and maybe a couple of performance charts on reaching optimal duration. While certainly good from the straightforwardness and communication angle, it's just not particularly alluring in the long run. A guy like Morgan who, by all accounts, is an amazing specimen and needs to loosen up a bit would probably not do well in that kind of relationship. He'd too easily fall into routine and then be left wondering what sex would be like without rigid structure in a power sharing agreement that's clearly skewed to the one who can alter reality, but doesn't for anything fun.

Even though I don't particularly like Danielle or Lotus, their personalities are much more fun and flirty, albeit a bit repressed in the former's and overt in the latter's. Clearly they also have advantages in the eye candy department and, let's face it, they're both easier to fetishize for it. However, their fetish is majorally one of body and not particularly of mind.

Cass is the glorious mix of all of them, with the added taboo of the forbidden. A beautiful body, a personality that is one if not dependency, but mutual support, allure, and teasing, and a history that goes well beyond one or two test flights. That's really the advantage of trope childhood friend, who lacks for perhaps beauty, brains, etc-- familiarity, tension, and longing. Cass is that and more because, like Morgan, her stock is top notch. This is not simply a case of desiring something that is contrary to good sense, but rather a moment that just makes perfect sense if you really consider who they are.

Maman has run Morgan's life to this point, he's followed his duty to the script and fulfilled everything expected of him despite the pressure, and he is not only by the book, he's writing addendums to the book to reinforce what the book says. So something primal, something contrary to what is obvious, that subverts the script is not only desirable, but damn near required if he really wants to grow. Honestly I'm fearful that Cass may just become a conduit for that desire and we lose that quality of longing that makes her special. Any relationship with her should not be solely for Morgan's sake or pleasure, but one that allows the both if them to embrace and grow together from that long running longing and desire.

Is that likely? I don't particularly think so, it's probably better we not explore that character or try to challenge the order prescribed. Morgan should only do exactly what's expected of him. He should not dare to do something untoward. We should not consider choices that are clearly before us, but probably shouldn't do. What a tragedy it would be.
>>
>>3453660
....This is a level of thought on this topic I was unprepared for especially on the bits for Maman and Cass, and that has me...concerned.

Though given her behavior in the plane I think you have a gross misunderstanding of Kyou's personality. She's less likely to pull out charts and graphs and more likely to go full "Morgan I'm going to fuck you until it's rape."
>>
>>3453706
I don't argue it would be "consensual" rape, I do argue that it's going to be driven by an almost psychopathic drive for pleasure efficiency.[\spoiler]
>>
>>3453660
>I feel like there would just be nothing mysterious or surprising about any relationship with her.
I think you're taking Kyou too much at face value, she only seems stoic and aloof without much personality because she's an Imperial Navy Princess with regal and military bearing. Her real face comes out when gets to drop the mask and it's really cute and nerdy with a side of AWOO BLOODLUST. If we hooked up I'd give it a week before we find ourselves on the couch eating pizza in our underwear while nerding out about planes and watching anime.

Also what disadvantage in eye candy are you talking about. As noted previously Yahagi looks a lot like Idolm@s Sakuya and AL Atago, right down the wolf ears.
>>
>>3453757
Generic idolmaster awoo girl versus muscle girl? I give you that might just be my preference.

Against Lotus though? No question who's more tempting.

> we find ourselves on the couch eating pizza in our underwear while nerding out about planes and watching anime

That would be an even more disappointing turn for Morgan though. Underachievement is the morally easy/bad end for characters under the pressure expectations. With Danielle, Morgan would at least push each other in self improvement in a mutually supportive way. That's the real draw of her, in my opinion, but it's fundamentally goal oriented which is much the trap of before. What makes Cass the real prize is that the motivation is ostensibly lust driven, backed by a shared childhood intensity of performance and expectation. But rather than the continued expectations brought on by a personality of duty that Kyou has to choose to perform, Cass is already actively rebelling against it (with Morgan's encouragement.)
>>
>>3453780
My dude there is a vast difference between underachievement and having a day off.

It's one thing to spend a sunday lazing around on the couch watching anime and nerding out about planes, quite another to do it everyday.
>>
>>3453780
>That would be an even more disappointing turn for Morgan though. Underachievement is the morally easy/bad end for characters under the pressure expectations.
Uh, I'm not sure how you translated "cute couple doing things relevant to their interests" into "wyvern crew devolves into lazy slackers" but that's not what I meant.

If self improvement is what you're after then Kyou is effectively the nuclear option. Lotus and Danielle are perfectly adequate SIOs with their own specialties, but Kyou is simply off the chart and pushes our combined performance into the realm of the impossible. She would be the Merlin to our Frank.
>>
>>3453894
That's really why she's my Tier 0 choice for the backseat, she's far and away better than the rest of them and I think once we actually get to spend some one on one time with each other without the press watching we'll get to be more honest with each other.
>>
>>3453907

Does anyone else think our flight with Lotus was...Weird? Like, not scripted or anything, but why the hell are we flying all the way to Alaska to blow up an airfield? I feel like this was a completely different test than we thought it was.
>>
>>3454884
My guess is someone with too much brass on their shoulder figured Alaska was where Frank's talent came through, so might as well send us up there as well, see what happens.
>>
>>3454914
Lotus is primarily a Navigation witch, with the side talent of making equipment function at it's "On-Paper" specs rather than it's real specs. What that does is it makes her a near perfect strike asset. Why we would want that in a Wyvern I have no damn idea but whatever.
>>
>>3454922
But that's my point! Who is trying to run a Wyvern as a strike asset? Like, that makes no sense, but someone CLEARLY wants to see how we do in the role.

I want to know *why*
>>
>>3454990
Maybe because, like me, they can't see any other use for her talents in a Wyvern apart from acting as a sparkle battery. And if they want a magic power powered strike asset, the B-1W seems to fit the bill rather well.
>>
>>3455007
Hmm, not sure I buy that, but I suppose we'll have to wait for next thread. I still think this was a non-obvious test, but debrief will tell us either way.
>>
>>3454990
>Who is trying to run a Wyvern as a strike asset?
I mean, the Wyvern variant that's present in AC7 is called the "Strike Wyvern", maybe that idea is being tossed around by the brass in this universe?
>>
>>3455276
We're already flying it. Newer Wyverns look like it whereas the older ones have more rounded airframes.

Also, not sure why they added the "Strike" designation in AC7 when it's still classified as a a fighter. Maybe it just sounded cool...
>>
>>3455276

This is gonna sound stupid, but do we know if there's such a thing like, Commando Wyverns? Like, the only people I can think of that would want a "multirole" Wyvern would be the kings of "Go strange places and do weird shit"

Retarded, I know, but I'm grasping at straws here.
>>
>>3454990
These flights are designed to show off what each Witch's talent can do and because Lotus's talent would be best suited for a strike role, we got a strike mission. Just like Danielle being a SEAD witch got us a SEAD mission or Kyou being OP as fuck got us a Berlin-like situation.
>>
>>3455566
I should have said 'designed to best show off what each Witch's talent can do', as they all would do a fine job in your standard air dominance role that the Wyvern is built for.
