Longyamen, Edinburgh Malaya
A century ago, this small fishing town at the tip of the Malaya Peninsula was just that - a little coastal settlement of little significance. That all changed when the Kingdom of Edinburgh arrived in 1830 with her adventurers, and claimed the land for the crown.

These veteran adventurers, with years of experience exploring uncharted territory under their belt, quickly recognized the untapped potential of this location. Longyamen’s geographical position provided a natural harbor for ships, and its location on the tip of a strait served as the junction between the then Yu Dynasty and the rest of Southeast Assuwa, giving it the makings of a powerful trading port.

What followed was an influx of colonists and entrepreneurs. Today, Longyaman is a bustling harbor and the heart of trade and maritime travel in Southeast Assuwa. Under the Kingdom of Edinburgh, the city became the nation’s centerpiece of dominance over this part of the world.

As Edinburgh’s Jeweled Crown of the Far East, the city was appropriately constructed and decorated to reflect that title. Districts and architectures were modeled after classical Edinburgh before industrialization - old designs with new interiors, and streets were kept exceptionally clean. From the colorful dyes of the Raj to the varied spices of the East Indies, the city’s bustling trading port ferried in goods from all over the continent. In a sense, Longyamen was the first International City, a shining star that demonstrated Edingburgh’s vast heritage, wealth and power in this part of the globe...

Power that allowed them to dominate their fellow allies in the Atlantic Federation.

Erected in the center of this city was the Governor-General’s Office, Longyamen’s seat of power.
While the structure was known as an ‘office’, a ‘palace’ would be a far more accurate description of this grand achievement of engineering. Together with guesthouses, a botanical garden, a situation room for military personnel and a fully protected bunker, the Governor General’s Office covered an area of 300,000 m2. Unsurprisingly, this level of grandiosity has granted the landmark notoriety rivalling the Tengar Khaganate’s Forbidden Palace.

Within a room on the third story of that formidable office was a thin, late middle-aged man in full suit, sitting behind a solid chestnut desk reading the day’s paper. His graying hair was combed to a slicked back, giving him an aura of youthful vigor despite his age. A lush, well maintained moustache hanged right under his nose, capping off the gentlemanly aesthetic.

The gentleman’s attention left the paper as a gentle knock on the door disturbed the harmonious solace.
“What is it?” He asked politely, folding the paper into a neat, rectangular form.
“Lord Moriarty,” The voice of his secretary came from behind the door. “The ambassador of Vinland and the representative of the Carolingian Indochine government-general have arrived.”
The man smiled deviously as he was alerted of the presence of guests

“My, my, dear Henry, let’s not keep the gentlemen waiting.”
“Yes, my lord.”
John Henry Moriarty, Governor General of Edinburgh Malaya, donned his signature feather trimmed coat and left the room. Though he was a veteran in both Europan Wars, the man was much better known for his illustrious work in Edinburgh’s Secret Intelligence Service. For Edinburgh, there wasn't a more perfect candidate to manage such an important and delicate domain.

This gathering of important Federation officials was conducted in a small, rather modest room around a round table. At first glance, a bystander may see this setup rather inappropriate for a meeting between high ranking Federation officials. However, the truth was because this gathering was not sanctioned by any of the respective parties. On paper, Moriarty was just inviting two friends to have an afternoon tea, a favorite pastime for those hailing from the Edinburgh Isles.

“Gentlemen! It’s such a pleasure to make both of your acquaintance.” Moriarty entered the scene with an amicable nod before taking his seat. He quickly surveyed the near empty room and picked out a young man who sat by his left, an absent seat to his right, and two filled cups of steaming, untouched black tea.

“How was the tea?” The governor general followed up the peasantries. Needless to say, his little stunt amused no one in particular.
“How about we get right to the point, Lord Governor.” An scarred, eagle-eyed officer barged into the meeting. His deep, commandeering voice was one befitting of a warrior, a retired veteran who still retained that passion and vigor in his heart. Moreover, a band of heavily armed soldiers followed closely behind, each carrying the insignia of the United States of Vinland.

“As restless as always I see, Mr. Armstrong.” Moriarty took a sip of earl gray, watching the Vinland ambassador’s theatrics with mild amusement. It was one thing to enter the Lordship’s estate armed, but it was something else entering it with a platoon of men armed to the teeth.
“Traffic.” Armstrong casually responded, dropping his weight onto his chair. “You mind if I keep these boys around?”
The governor general answered kindly with a serene smile. “Feel free.”

The two elder figures shared a laugh, leaving only Joachim Cousteau, the representative from Carolingia, in an anxious, albeit awkward disposition. While he’s a good diplomat in his own right, these two larger-than-life figures were out of his league.

“Now then, shall we begin?”
Moriarty’s tone shifted, slightly different than usual. Those with sensitive ears might have guessed the reason for today’s gathering and showed it similarly with a curious suspicion.

“Concerning the series of events that happened in the past week: We have reports of unidentified submersibles appearing in our waters. At the same time, we also have insurrections sweeping through Carolingia’s territories in this part of the world.” He paused momentarily, glancing over Cousteau’s increasingly grim expression. “Last but not least, the Tengar Khaganate’s newest flagship was hijacked by Zipang partisans. And it looks like… it’s heading down south.”

The Government General stops, interlocking his fingers while assuming a steepling posture. “Does the honorable gentlemen belief these incidents to be connected in some way? And if so, what appropriate action should we take?”

“Lord Moriarty,” The Carolingian representative spoke up. “Matters like these should be best left discussed within the High Council.”

“Interesting proposal.” The old gentleman muses at the idea while turning to his other guest. “What do you say, Mr. Armstrong?”
“How utterly counterproductive.” Vinland’s ambassador shook his head and vented his disapproval in the bluntest way his profession allowed him to.
“That is the official process, Mr. Armstrong.” The Carolingian raised his voice. “It is the duty of the High Council to vote and pass decisions as a whole on international matters like these, no?”

“And how practical would the decisions of some bureaucratic, out of touch dinosaurs who can’t even find this place on a map be?”
Armstrong’s formidable presence- a testament to his history in the armed forces - outright intimidated the young representative, leaving him with no other choice but to grit his teeth silently.
“And who are you anyway, kid? Where’s the Governor General?”
“I am Joachim Cousteau, an aide of Monsieur Antoine Lepante, Governor General of Indochine.” The young man stepped up, his delivery stern and aggressive. “I believe I have every credential to represent the Governor General in this affair.”

However, Vinland’s boisterous ambassador was not done with him yet.
“What sort of name is ‘Joe-a-kim Co-stew’? Is having fancy names and fancy pants all you Carolines are good for? How about growing a backbone and start calling the shots yourselves?”
“You…!”

“Gentleman, gentlemen, please.” Moriarty stepped in and broke the two up before the argument escalated. “While I do appreciate the enthusiasm, I have to issue a reminder that we’re not here to discuss the culture of Mr. Cousteau’s nation, nor the subpar efficiency of the Federation.”

The young representative of Carolingia shot Moriarty a glance. Despite both being major members of the Atlantic Federation, Edinburgh and Vinland have never played well with the Continentals, particularly in politics. Neither nation would have garnered much support had this topic been brought directly to the High Council, but here in the Far East- far away from the reaches of other member states- they have completely free rein to flex their muscles.
>>
>>3444320
The ambassador’s remarks aside, the fact that the Lord Governor himself would assemble such unsanctioned meetings was by itself a telltale sign of how little these two men, and by extension, the nations they represent, thought of the Federation as a whole. While this frustrated Cousteau to no end, the Carolingian representative was also aware that his country is in no position to make any demands, lest their current situation saw some improvement.

“If I were not mistaken, Mr. Armstrong, your nation’s priority is to maintain order within the region.” Moriarty inquired, “Is that correct?”
“Exactly.” The ambassador of Vinland crossed his arms and leaned back into his chair. “These insurrections follow the exact patterns we observed during the collapse of the old Colombian Republic. Hell, these ‘rebels’ even use the same guns and tactics! If the godless, thieving Colombian communists weren’t behind this, I don’t know who is.”
Armstrong’s words were lettered with extra scorn and disdain as he spoke of his nation’s sworn enemy. The animosity between Vinland and Colombia very much mirrored the relationship between the Federation and the Empire, but Moriarty always suspected the grudge ran way deeper than just territorial and resource disputes.

“Let us confirm the identity of those submersibles, first and foremost.” Moriarty turned to address the Vinland ambassador. “ Mr. Armstrong, were we to reasonably assume these unidentified submersibles as stealth agents of your nation’s less-than-agreeable neighbors from the south, what actions would you suggest we take?”

“Nothing.” Armstrong declared proudly across the table, hands still crossed before his chest. “Our navy’s Seventh Fleet has already deployed two of its carrier battle groups in the region. They’ll take over the hunt from here.“
“Two carrier groups?” Moriarty’s eyes went wide. “I must say I am surprised, Mr. Armstrong. Vinland has never dispatched such a large force to Assuwa.”
“Not much of a choice, have we?” He scoffed, shooting another glare at Cousteau. “Seeing how poorly these Carolines are handling themselves.”

The young Carolingian representative sat by with a deep scowl. He wanted to retort but decided to swallow his protest at the last moment. As much as he hated to admit, Vinland’s aid was integral in safeguarding Carolingia’s Indochine territory, regardless of how dismissive their ambassador acted.

“We’ll weed out these communist scum before any of you even noticed.”
“This would be very welcoming news to Sir Antoine.” Cousteau calmly acknowledged on behalf of his direct superior.
“Very well, then Malaya shall further aid your endeavors by providing ports for ships to dock, as well as logistical support for any supply you may need. The Royal Navy shall keep an eye on that rogue battleship as well.”

“Battleship? What can a single piece of outdated technology do?” Armstrong let out a demeaning scoff upon the mention of the most recent blunder in naval history. “Battleships are now history. Carrier fleets are where the future’s at.”
Moriarty chuckled in lieu, apparently agreeing with the ambassador’s viewpoint.
“Indeed, Mr. Armstrong, but as you said, one can never be too careful.”

“Well then, that sums up this meeting.” Following a nod, the boisterous ambassador stood up and put on his suit jacket, signaling his armed bodyguards to prepare to leave.
“Already leaving?” Moriarty raised an eyebrow. “Mr. Armstrong, your tea is untouched-”
“I don’t drink tea.” He turned to look at the lord governor while straightening his coat. “But I do appreciate the hospitality. We’ll see each other soon.”

Vinland’s ambassador left the room just as abruptly as he entered it, leaving the remaining two.
“I shall be taking my leave as well, Lord Moriarty” Cousteau stood up with a sigh. “While I would’ve loved to stay around for afternoon tea, I believe Sir Antoine would very much prefer to have my reports as soon as possible.”
“Indeed, it would be a crime not to inform him right away.” The Lord Governor acknowledged with a nod. Offering one final handshake, Moriarty parted ways with the last of the guest he invited to his office.

As the young representative left, the middle-aged gentleman sat idly back onto his chair, sipping his cup of tea. Even though this unsanctioned meeting with Carolingia and Vinland’s representatives has come to an end, there was more work to be done for him.
“Dear Henry?”
“Yes, Lord Moriarty?” His secretary answered, entering the room.
“Any words from our friend on the cruise?”
“Yes,” Henry walked up, handing his superior a piece of paper- more specifically, a transcribed telegraph. “As a matter of fact, this was sent directly to you, milord.”

The Governor General of Malaya quickly skimmed through the paper’s contents.
“Outdated technology, was it?” A satisfied grin gradually crept onto his face. “Oh dear Mr. Armstrong, how naive of a man you are...”

“Nii-san…”

“Nii-san!”
...

“Wake up, Subaru!”
“T-Tewi?” I woke up as I felt the soft covers tearing away from my body. The morning sun seared my face as I opened my eyes.
“It’s Sunday, let me sleep for once.” Despite complaining, I was already sitting up and getting ready to rise for the day.
“Nii-san,” My sister scowled as she stood over me. “It’s Urabon, remember? Get off your lazy ass, we gotta go get offerings for mother.”

Ura… Ah yes, today is the 13th of July.
“Is father coming back this time?”
“No, unfortunately.” She sighed, walking towards the closet erected at the corner of the room. “His leave got suspended due to some antics those mainlanders cooked up recently.” Opening my closet, Tewi tossed out a fitting short sleeved shirt, along with a pair of black pants to go with the contrast.
“I see, so this marks the second year.”

Emboldened by their momentum after crushing the Yu Dynasty, the Tengar Khaganate invaded the much smaller Goguryeo Kingdom with the full intention to subjugate the entire peninsula. However, what was supposed to be a swift and overwhelming conquest has now spiraled into a perpetual stalemate by the air superiority and the surprising resilience from the Goguryeons.

“He’ll be there for a third year if the current situation persists.”
Since he was stationed in Tsushima, the Zipangnese domain closest to the Goguryeo Peninsula, it was only natural for father to be recalled in case of an emergency. This also meant he was unable to return to Kure as long as our international neighbors continued to prolong their conflict.
“Then it’s up to us to make up for his absence,” I said, changing into the clothes my sister chose for me. The simple, clean white polo paired well with Tewi’s white lace sundress - one with a striking resemblance to the sundress mother used to wear.
After grabbing my wallet and a shopping bag, the two of us left home and headed toward the market.

“There’s a lot of things on the list,” I said, looking at the list of items we needed to prepare. “We should split up.”
“Good idea.” Tewi nodded, taking the parasol I was holding for her out of my hand. “You’ll go fetch the flowers, and I’ll get the fruits and sweets. Let’s meet in front of the temple.”

With Orabon just around the corner, the florists had their inventory quite stacked and ready for business. It didn’t take long for me to finish my part and arrive at the entrance of the temple, our designated rendezvous point, with two large bouquets of sunflowers, some of mother’s favorite.
>>
Looking around, I realized my sister was nowhere to be seen. I was early this time, I suppose.
The cicadas chirped loud and noisily under the scorching, cloudless July sky. This utterly unbearable heat made it only logical to seek refuge under the wooden eaves at the entrance of the temple. Standing with my back against the wall, I started to recall a dream that I had earlier today. It was hard trying to piece the bits together now, but I did remember it as a rather bizarre one. At the same time, I felt as if I’ve forgotten something quite important about it...

“Nii-san!”
I lifted my head, alerted by the call from my visibly exhausted sister, carrying a basket of fruits and a bag of ohagi.
“You won't believe the line at the wakashi stand.”
“Yeah, I can tell,” I replied, taking notice of her visibly moist forehead and pinkish skin. Reaching out, I took both the fruits and ohagi from her grasp, hanging them over my other free arm.
“Let’s go see mother.”

With Tewi holding the parasol to provide some shade, I carried the offerings into the temple’s front entrance and into the graveyard, stopping right at the Kurokawa Family tombstone. After placing the offerings aside, the true hard labor began.
While I weeded out the growing foliage that started to overgrow from the corners and wipe them aside with a broom, Tewi took the initiative to clean the tombstone, rinsing clean water over it from a bamboo-crafted bailer. Once both processes were complete, we decorated the stone vases on both ends of the altar with fresh bouquets I bought earlier and set the foodstuffs Tewi brought gently and tidily on the center.

With everything set and done, the two of us stood before the grave of our mother and clasped our hands together.

We’ve come to see you again, mother. Father has been caught up with work, just like last time, but I’m sure he wants to be here with us. Thank you for watching over us, and please watch over Father as well.

My sister and I stood in silence for a good while, hands clasped in meditation. Eventually, she finished her prayers too and turned to me with a gentle tug.
“Let’s head home.” She suggested out of the blue.
“Already?”
"Nii-san, did you notice how insufferably hot it is today? I'm sure mother won't want either of us to get a heatstroke."
It sounded very much like an excuse to get back home as soon as possible, but she wasn’t wrong.
“Don’t forget, we’ve got to clean the house today too.”
“I guess you’re right” I answered with a smile. “Let’s go.”
Turning around, we prepared to leave the gravestone. In an utterly innocuous act, Tewi reached out her hand, to which I took and held without a second thought. Together, we began walking home under the scorching July sun...

My eyes snapped open, greeted to the absolute darkness within the Captain’s chamber, under a perpetual loud noise of someone banging on the door. I was unable to see anything in the absence of light, but I can feel my hand grasping onto the cotton blanket wrapped around my arm.
This sudden change in scenery initially confused me, until my mind gradually cleared up to the grim realization that I had just awoken from a slumber.
That dream felt… so vivid, almost as if it was the reality, and this hellhole I’m in is the nightmare I can’t wake up from.
I could almost still feel my sister’s hand wrapping gently around my own…

I felt the moisture gathering around my eyes. I tried wiping them away with my sleeve but to no avail.
Soon, tears overflowed and flooded my face like a broken dam, with no signs of stopping.
I buried my face into the pillow so I could muffle the noises I was making. My diaphragm cramped from the irregular spasms every time I sobbed, making my entire body curl up in a fetal position.
I tried to regain control of my breathing from the endless, uncontrollable sobbing. I could not.
In the end, I found myself gasping for air, like a catfish stranded in a shallow pond, drowning in none but my own sorrow.

And all this time, the knocking at the door persisted, followed by a distant yet familiar voice calling my name.
“Subaru? Subaru? A- are you in there!?”

For now it's just a phase. The QMs seem pretty dead set on driving home that batman factor but the MC doesn't have to go in a direction where he acts like a cunt to everyone.
Better yet, I would like to see it turned into a motivation to actually strike back against Aiteng's forces instead of just ceaselessly running away.

I only fear this could be a prelude to some Tomino-tier collateral damage script we're heading into.
Focus as a standalone QM has this bad habit of finding any means possible to off side characters en masse. The coQM just accentuates it farther by sprinkling drama onto the wounds.

Kind of hard to be a cunt to everyone when you have a battleship to run and a crew to manage. Not to mention that's just going down the same route Hibari did.

Firstly, apologies for neglecting that quest for so long. I do plan on going back to it, just that writing Pacific Theater together with AtisE really opened my eye on how flawed some of my earlier writing/storytelling was, and I have began setting a much higher standard for myself when it comes to penning out an update.

I will go back writing Takamagahara, but before that I want to farther hone my skills together with my co-QM so I get to improve, and for once be certain that my solo updates are of a consistent good quality. Thank you all for the concern. I'll see if I could run a session this week, at least finish up where I have left off.

I buried my face deep into the pillow I was holding, trying to muffle the noise I’m making. The voice behind the door sounded genuinely concerned about my well being, but I just cannot present myself under these circumstances. I curled up in bed in the same position, allowing grief to run its course. The knocking continued, but eventually died down after a while- just enough for me to calm down a bit.

Wiping away the tears, I sat up in the bed and took a deep breath. After I’ve made sure I wouldn’t burst into a crying mess again, I got off the bed, put on my coat, then sluggishly made my way towards the door.

With the knocking already died down, I was not quite sure whether anyone is still on the other side. Has this individual left again just like before? With one hand, I reached out for the doorknob to make one final check.
Incidentally, I heard a faint, distinct declaration coming from the other side.

“Stand back, I’m kicking this down.”
I wasn’t sure if I had heard that correctly until I heard what sounded like a short charge dash-
Reflexively, my body took a step back instantly when the sound got louder and louder. And soon enough, the door on the Captain’s chambers was blown open by a powerful kick.

“Ugh...”
Reflexively, I held my arm over my head to block off the searing lights that invaded through the now opened door, threatening to sear my retinas. At the same time, I heard the calling of that all too familiar voice I thought had left long ago.

“Subaru!?”
I lowered my arms, trying to pinpoint the direction where the voice was coming from, while my eyes struggled to adjust themselves to the sudden shift in brightness.

Eventually, my vision cleared up as my eyes adapted to the new lighting. In turn, I finally saw the owner of that voice behind the door.
Yanagi Morishima stood in front of the entrance, her hands held up in front of her chest. She seemed surprised seeing me right at the door, and it doesn’t take a genius to make out how terribly worried she was. Another shorter, more petite silhouette stood beside my friend- it was none other than Hibari Koishimizu, now the leader of Yamato’s air wing, and more recently the battering ram that knocked open the door.

An awkward silence engulfed the room as I stared at the two and the two stared back.
I wanted to give them a typical greeting, something to at least ease her worries, yet I found myself struggling to speak from how dry my throat felt.
“I--”
“Thank goodness!”
In a burst of energy, Yanagi threw herself onto me, wrapping me in a close embrace. Her powerful, tearful tackle almost threw me off balance. I felt her arms locking around my chest, then the slight bristling of her hair as my childhood friend planted her teary face over my shoulder.
“You… you’re….”
However, this sudden burst of joy soon died down as she made some space between us and looked straight into my eyes.

“You’re not okay.” She lets go of her embrace, and the same worried look resurfaced. “Subaru, you haven’t left the room! Did you even eat anything?”
“Not...much,” I answered weakly. “There isn’t much appetit….”
“It’s been TWO DAYS! TWO WHOLE DAYS!” Yanagi grabbed the sides of my coat and gave me a hard shake. “You’ll die like this!”

“It’s fine, I’m not going to...”
“No you’re not!” My friend raised her voice. “Look in the mirror Subaru, you look like a ghoul!”
She did not wait for what I had to say. Instead, Yanagi flipped on the lights and stormed into the room, her eyes darting around frantically, searching for something.
Eventually, she locked onto a couple of empty plastic bags sitting on the corner of a disorganized desk, then swiftly picked one up for a full examination.

“Are these… IV fluids!?” Her eyes went wide. “Subaru, you can’t survive off this alone! Were you trying to kill yourself!?”
