Gopher’s answers grew more clipped as his trademark paper-thin patience tears. No spoils or intel from the captured hostiles, they’re still being interrogated and they’re likely to be given to Canadian jurisdiction as a peace offering for your “quiet” approach. No trace of the PHANTOMS--either of them. And that capture device was called a Hangerter. They’re known quantities, both rare and vulnerable, but have seen use in a few high-profile missions tied to RUDRA’s upper echelons. Scuttlebutt is that one of the Philosophers makes every single one by hand.

All that done, though, Gopher very politely has you get the fuck out so he can resume running the show. You’re still down for repairs a few days. And a busy few days they’ve been.

The war has progressed...

RUDRA contests African energen zones
Andes duel imperils thousands as Carrowcal, Euler battle
War turns good business for French criminal cartel
Hunter activity derails Canadian city
Contact lost with Badia mission
Patlabor Station defended by space Hunters
Ultimate Reploid project completed
Deadly new Maverick models made from stolen data
iO topping rivals in payment wars
Scottish LBN factory destroyed by RUDRA forces
Hunter general repels Shiva attack
Volkov to contest Silvestrov in Russian election
"Major tactical victory" as Zero downs Cristavel
Turkey struggles in wake of Istanbul siege
Entrepreneur pitches vermion shipping
Doppler goes silent as Pacific theatre heats up
Gecko goes bull in bear market
Unlikely contender runs for US Senate
Weissritter, RUDRA representatives refuse to comment on incident in Detroit

You look away from the news crawl, back down at your datapad. A message from Gopher pops up, clipped and brusque as ever.

“Saved you the trouble of the post-op nastygram. Here’s how your pay broke down, money’s already deposited to your account.”

Base Pay:

You’re a bit stunned--you’d expected nothing like that, especially for a failed op. Still… Jesus, it really was a long three days.

You sift through to another message, from Em.

“Let me know when you’re back up. Got some ideas for you. PS don’t die.”

You shoot back “Instructions unclear, died” and hit send. He might still be away, according to Gopher.

No worries there, Gopher; we need no encouragement on that front!

Joking aside, I am a bit disappointed we totally missed that: When you hear "Hacker is interested is the MagLevs", it's not a huge leap to think "Oh crap, he's gonna make a train-sized railgun." In retrospect, it looks pretty obvious. Unlike the food deliveries, which I never would have connected to kidnapped hostages, since most of our Mavs so far have been the Take No Prisoners kind. Before Moloch, Stellar Atlantica is the only one we'd even heard of taking someone alive (...and Jagwire, but that REALLY doesn't count as "taking hostages").

With nothing else pressing, you figure you should see how the gang is doing.

“Susan, you there?”

He comms back after a moment. “Yessir. Flak said you were vertical again.”

“Yep. Better luck next time.”

He chuckles. “Nice to hear from you again.”

“Likewise. You guys at the range?”

“For now. I think Looey’s gonna chase us out.”

“Tell him to hold off, I’m on my way back.”

Looey is perching atop a table, looming ominously over Derby, who is steadfastly ignoring him as he carefully wipes the emitter lens on his disassembled buster rifle. Susan waves as you come closer, shaking his head.

“He’s been standing there like that for half an hour.”

“You’ve been staying here too long!” He crows from behind.

“Don’t you sleep under that bench?” Derby asks.

“...Yes.”

Susan rolls his eyes. “Marx is over there, practicing with Flak.”

You note one of the range fields has been cleared for mobility exercises, with the two Berets dashing up a storm. Marx is a bit further along than Flak, but he also doesn’t have that new leg hardware to adjust to. He’s attempting, with varying levels of success, to scale the wall with his EAS. Flak is feeling out timing cycles, movement, and momentum.

“So just those two?”

“For now,” Susan replies.

“Had to give Flak one of ‘em, huh?”

He folds his arms. “I did, and I’ll fight you on it.”

You shake your head. “No need. Everyone doing good?”

The two of you turn and look back at the others. Flak drives an elbow into the wall to stop his advance, rattling his dome with the sudden stop. Marx slides down the wall, loses footing with one boot, and goes for a sprawl. Derby keeps on assembling his weapon stoically as Looey leans in over his head, raising his wings out to either side, and makes a screeching “SCRAWWWWW!”

The two of you share a glance as Derby, without looking up, produces a small bag of what looks like corn kernels and tosses one to Looey, who snaps it up without pause and leans back.

“So I got a letter,” Susan finally says.

“Yeah?”

“I’ve been promoted.”

“No shit.”

“Corporal, now. In light of Vancouver, and leading the fireteam for a few sorties.”

You clap him on the shoulder. “Congrats, man.”

“Thanks, I guess. I’m not sure how I feel about it.”

“Money,” you offer. “You feel so much more money.”

He snorts. “Maybe not ‘so much more,’ but yeah, it’s a thought.”

“So what’ve I missed in the last few days?”

“Not much. Karin came by once or twice and drilled with us, that was cool. We saw Halcyon the day after the Philosopher thing. Pretty banged up, but on his feet.”

“What was he doing?”

He scoffs. “Mugging for photo ops, mostly. I didn’t exactly get close to the press train and ask him.”

“Fair point.”
>>
>>3440848
He looks back out as Derby begins throwing his hat, Marx and Flak taking turns kicking off the walls to try and catch it mid-leap. “Got those, and Flak picked up those stakes.”

“Anyone else go under for any work?”

“Not yet. He just refused to let that Culverin go.”

“Can’t blame him.”

He turns and gives you a thin smile. “Me neither.”

“You know, Canada opened their arms catalogue to me, kinda like Candemir. I bet we could put some of those upgrades to use for you guys.”

“Maybe. Still pretty rich for our blood, we’re still 2 dashes short of a quartet.”

“Maybe I can put in for a stipend.”

“Doubt it, but it’s worth a shot.”

>You want to go over those new toys with me?

“You guys want to get out of here and peek and poke?”

Susan’s response is as flat as it is immediate. “There’s regs against that, sir.”

You flick him on the back of the head. “You’ve been hanging out with Em too much.”

“Yeah, may as well. I think Looey’s about one more more exercise away from throwing Derby into space.”

He calls the crowd to saddle up and mount up, Marx responding with an entirely-too-formal salute and ‘yes, sir!’--apparently the team is giving Susan a good ribbing about his promotion. Flak elbows him a little as they collect Derby’s hat and toss it back to him, packing up kit and moving out.

They’re chatty and exuberant as you walk through the halls, having a good time--it makes you feel a little better. Whatever the outcome of Moloch, you and your team are still here. You make a note to send your regards to the RCMP and your fellow hunters to give your thanks for the ones that weren’t so lucky.

You pull up the big screen in the dev room, punching in your account and opening the attached catalog data.

“That’s…” Flak murmurs.

“A lot, yeah,” Susan agrees, flicking his hand over the bar to scroll through. “Most of it’s a bit rich for our blood.”

“Not all, though,” Marx adds.

“True. Plus, we can always save up.”

“Welcome to the treadmill, boys,” you say with a grin. “Speaking of, I’ve got my own ideas to look into…”

“Not without me, fuckface,” Em says from behind you, announcing himself with a bop across the top of your head with a rolled up schematic. “Good to see you. They wouldn’t let me into Lifesaver.”

You give him a noogie that he snarls and swipes at. “That’d explain it. How’ve you been without the brains of the operation?”

“Honestly? I don’t remember much.” He digs a knuckle into his temple. “Got a killer headache, and the last few days are a bit of a blur.”

“Yeah?”

Shrugging, he flourishes his roll and gently bops you on your left and right shoulders. “Whatever. Before these witnesses, I anoint you Sir Dumbass of Fuckwagon.”

Susan golfclaps, Marx rips another form-perfect salute, and Flak wipes a mock-tear from his eye.

“You’re all bastards and I’m sending you to die,” you reply cheerfully. “So what’s that?”

“This,” Em breathes, laying it on the counter, “is for you.”

The wafer-thin circuits within light up and then project their plans onto the schematic. A studded carbon-fiber brick with two tapered points stares back up at you from the page. Beside it, a lengthened cylindrical bracer and clamp roughly describing a forearm join it, slender cables running down the top of the wrist and up to those studs.

“Em, what is…”

“I was thinking,” he says, on a roll now. “You’re really starting to make use of your kit, right?”

“Came home about empty on the tanks, yeah…”

“Well, you remember that little confab we had about the grapple cables?”

“I do.”

“Well since I can’t take my advice,” he says cheerfully, “I figured I could help you with it. AND--”

“Oh, hell,” you groan.

He prods the white stripe of band-aid-patched chest and armor. “Seeing as you CLEARLY got dunked again…”

“Fuck you?” You offer.

“I think you need INSTRUCTION. After this.”

“Well then shut up and scoot over so I can look at this monstrosity,” you reply.

All prior upgrades not specifically excluded are on the table, as are custom suggestions--if you want something not listed here, please cite the item. Do remember that certain items take specific parts of your systems--you wouldn’t be able to stack two buster compressor rings, for instance. The other would either be stored for later use before another mission, or you could opt to give it to one of your squad.

Your Zenny: Z157,003

Replacement Equipment:
Anode expended several consumables during his operation. While you can no longer order replacements at cost, resupply remains inexpensive.
Pullu Cell: 5,000 apiece. Both burned out from overuse, but fulfilled their functions handily, sparing you further--and in Moloch’s case, potentially deadly--damage.
Ejderha A17 “Yıldız” Anti-Robot Flare: Throwable one-use flare emits pattern of high- and low-frequency light that interferes with optics but does not harm humans at low exposures. Can hover during activation. Z800 apiece.
Ejderha A9 “Pençe” Throwing Knives: Simple spherical design offers no hint of this tool’s true function. On interacting with a shield frequency, projects a hi-beam through its own surface to stab perpendicular to the discharge. One-use apiece but a terrible surprise for the unaware. Standard issue for Turkish military forces. Z1,600 apiece.

Canadian Defense Contractors

Korman Intelligent Machines Inc.
One of the preeminent robot processor producers in the world, Korman’s Abrams processor is a highly successful product found in tens of thousands of Reploids. Their suite of products includes many specialty subprocessors in high demand with labs developing specialist Reploids, and Korman has a controlling interest in or has become the parent company of other notable Canadian arms manufacturers as a result.

Korman “Potter” Synchro: Currently the best synchro available on the market, with a dedicated subprocessor that tracks the timing of outside factors as well as internal timings to produce reaction times as close to target as any commercial manufacturer has been able to accomplish to date. Z129,000

Korman “Weston” 2Win Subprocessor: One of the better detection & investigation utilities on the market, though not in the same class as something like OPAL, the Weston 2Win is a substantial improvement on the erratic Weston S Subprocessor and provides two-source confirmation of identified risks and uncertainties, allowing detection of many traps and scanning through forms of stealth. Slight paranoia is noted in some users, though the company offers a software package to tweak results and reduce this outcome. Z45,000

Korman “Miller” Mobility Optimizer: Once part of Korman’s “Get Your S In Gear” campaign aimed at Maverick Hunters during the Sigma era, Korman has divided the Miller subprocessor from the Miller/Webster package that featured in several of the most dangerous defectors during the Maverick War. Loaded with a full systems diagnostic algorithm, the optimizer quickly directs your own movement capabilities and assists in pathfinding, traversal, and navigation with maximum efficiency and minimal effort. The optimizer of choice for sporting Reploids. Z110,000

Korman “Geller” Vectorer: A dedicated subprocessor for calculating motion vectors and providing projections of trajectory, speed, and freedoms of movement. Useful not only for aiming leading shots, but also for predicting incoming physical attacks, calculating escape routes, and rapidly scoping out potential ricochets. Z62,000

Korman “Jardine” Lateral Interpolator: A very useful ability for strategists and commanders, lateral thinking allows correlation of unrelated data points to arrive at logical inferences. Korman’s processor is a standout that has been used in command-level Reploids around the world, though it requires careful calibration via the attached software package to avoid leaning too hard to either optimism or pessimism when making inferential correlations. Macdonald Special Arms
A subsidiary of Korman, Macdonald supplies the Canadian Military with specialty weapons.

Macdonald “LMR” Analytic Buster: Local magnetic resonance calculated from the impact of this buster’s shots is used with dedicated software to calculate potential structural changes due to damage, not only including shield weakness but also general susceptibility to further attack and likelihood of damage to specific internal components. Z51,000

Macdonald “Walton” Powercharge Buster: Despite a reputation for a malfunctioning amend node, this weapon is a favorite of breakthrough specialists due to its rapid and potent charged shot. Unlike most busters, the Walton does not have an uncharged capacity. Z38,000

Macdonald “Hackenschleimer” Buster Cannon: Too large for a normal humanoid Reploid to equip without modifications to the arm and shoulder for support, this buster fires incredibly strong shots that knock back smaller targets. Very slow charge cycle and incompatible with most commercial buster mods. Z46,000

Macdonald “Davies” Exciter: A universal exciter component that provides feedback and reporting on the weapon’s energy usage, heat regulation status, and refiring readiness. Z8,200

Macdonald “O’Neal” Node Package: Combines a top-of-the-line amend node with a degaussing node that is able to scrub waste anchor ions into a secondary amend node, slightly improving WEAPON use capacity. Z55,000

Macdonald “Anderson” Amend Node: A training device, the Anderson amend node cancels anything fired from the buster, leaving only an ionic trace signature to fire out for tracking of shots that would have been hits. Used by the military for close combat simulations. Z1,100.

Macdonald “Rampulsky” Focusing Lens: A smart lens that adjusts escape velocity based on the user’s current movement to ensure complete ejection of the payload during a punch or a dash. Useful for ensuring maximum shear at close range when a buster shot is being fired in motion. Z21,500.

Macdonald “Wilson” Chamber Ring: Buster shots trap ionic residue in target’s shields that can be “pinged” once up to five minutes later for tracking or added damage. Z33,000.

Macdonald “Talbot” Chamber Ring: Buster shots paint target’s shields with visible light discharge that lasts for several minutes. Harmless and useless for distance tracking but good for highlighting targets who are trying to vanish into a crowd. Z7,000

Cardin Inc.
A major Canadian Reploid producer, Cardin contributes Reploid designs for military and law enforcement use, including the 225 and L1 lines. Cardin also supplies accessories to these forces.

Cardin “Blaireau” Laser Glaive Pod: A utility device for stopping vehicles, this pod can be used in a stationary configuration or rolled in a “bowling” attack, though this does tend to damage the pod and may render it unusable. The Blaireau projects a powerful laser blade on activation. Z2,400 apiece.

Cardin “Loutre” Ballast Buoy: A small canister that catalyzes water to create a gas bubble and catch it in a force envelope, the Loutre can be used by a human-sized Reploid to slowly float toward the surface of water. Its stabilizer also permits it to be kicked off from in water for additional mobility. A Loutre can serve as a platform on the surface of water. The catalytic gas requires recharging if it is to be reused; otherwise, these are one-use. Z1,500 apiece.

Cardin “Lapin” Missile: Comes in self-launching and stock versions. Lapin missiles deactivate if they lose tracking and can “hop” once after grounding if the target comes back in range. Useful anticollateral ordnance. Z800 apiece stock, Z1,100 apiece self-launching.

Cardin “Taupe” Missile: Comes in self-launching and stock versions. Taupe missiles can be fired into a solid surface and “burrow” there awaiting reactivation; their rapid beam drill tips allow them to instantly reorient and relaunch out of the surface (ground, wall, etc.) at a target when triggered. Z980 apiece stock, Z1,400 apiece self-launching.

Cardin “Lièvre” Jump Booster: An external add-on to the legs, the Lièvre extends jump distance vertically and horizontally. Z27,000.

Cardin “Souris” Scout Drone: An unobtrusive miniature scouting drone that roams the ground, about the size of a grenade. Z5,100 apiece.

Cardin “Musaraigne” Shuriken: A throwing star that magnetically latches onto the first enemy to trip its proximity detector ring and activates a trio of rotating cutting lasers. Limited in the total damage it can deal but substantially irritating. Z700 apiece.

Cardin “Phoque” Inverter Grenade: One of the most unique tools of the Canadian military, this grenade is used to intercept energy attacks, causing them to be deflected away from the inverter field. A skilled angle of impact can even result in the inverter field turning the attack back on the originator, though this requires a lot of practice or dedicated hardware or software solutions to calculate. Z1,900 apiece.

Huron “Osprey” Agility & Acceleration System: Famously used by the Cardin L1 series, the Osprey AAS combines the dash of an EAS with a secondary booster and reorienting sleeve to allow a second “jump” while in midair. A powerful but expensive mobility system. Z110,000.

Huron “Canard” Glide System: Not a true flight system, the Canard can be engaged during a jump or fall to glide safely downward, provided body orientation is appropriate to let the force-projected glide wings engage safely. Reploids with flight capabilities may engage the glide to extend overall air time. Z23,000.

Huron “Athabasca” Gyro Link System: Allows downward dash while wall-clinging to transfer momentum when on the ground. Z43,000.

Huron Flame Retardant Frit: This unobtrustive chemical coating reacts with fire, expanding to provide a protective barrier and reduce damage sustained. Wears down with impacts and won’t last forever (or for more than a mission or two given how Anode tends to use up his HP) but a cheap way to solve fire problems. Does leave vulnerable areas that can’t be fritted. Z15,000, reproof Z8,000.
Note that only one Frit can be applied at a time. You’ve banked but not yet equipped your anti-laser Frit.

Huron “Voyageur” Ailieron: Long streamlining ailieron intended for the back and retractable/foldable when primary flight system not engaged. Improves uptime. Razor edges help cut through entangling situations. Z9,000.

Journeyman Manitoba Inc.
Generally known as “Manitoba,” provides civilian-grade equipment for explorers as well as military-grade equivalents.

Manitoba JM2 Thermal Knife: Not primarily intended as a weapon, this knife can nonetheless output a powerful contained flame intended to help cut through obstacles, and can cause serious injury if misused. Z9,800.

Journeyman EC14 Electroconductor Gel: A pressurized canister containing an expanding gel, this substance is used in tandem with an enucleating magnetic “stylus” rod to effect a quick field repair of a damaged electrical circuit. By defining the conductivity using the stylus, it is possible to “draw” a very simple circuit that accretes the conductive element within the gel, with the filler providing insulation. This short-term patch can keep a vehicle functioning or restore energy briefly to a computer system, though effecting proper repairs with the circuit powered down is the recommended course of action as soon as is feasible. Z3,500 apiece.

Journeyman RG1 Electroconductor Tape: A sturdy roll of gray tape coated in adhesive electroconductive gel with an enucleating strip in the middle, this tape can be used to temporarily repair a damaged circuit or create a new one. Z4,900 apiece.

Osiris Laboratories
Osiris is Canada’s foremost defense contractor. While some of their components are sold in restricted supply to other Canadian developers, Kermod lacks the pull necessary to approve extranational sales.

Grapple Gauntlet
It is possible to create an adaptable housing designed to interface with Tension Coil. Reinforced heavy alloy plates worn over the hand, with two spiked “knuckles” for fast strikes. While lower damage than a lobeam saber, these knuckle spikes would double as launchable coils, springing out in flight from tapered stakes to grapnel claws. These would anchor as T. Coil, be it to walls or surfaces or to an enemy. This would open up a world of close-quarters fighting techniques, throws, grabs-and-pulls, etc. They would carry strong synergy with Mass Shriver and a convenient defensive offhand, even when wielding another weapon. Additional options and upgrade potential are high; R&D returned a laundry list of prospective improvements, many of which would be additive expansions that provide new applications while retaining all the functionality of the base Coils as you currently know them.

On purchasing this weapon, you must first select the baseline or the WEAPON-enhanced model. In either case, once purchased, you may choose two upgrades from the below list.
Base model: Z50,000. You would need to carry Tension Coil in your VWES stock in order to make use of the primary grapple functions, though it would remain a low-damage solid alloy weapon. While you would be reduced to 16 cables, you would only deplete ammunition on replacing a severed or destroyed cable.
Integrated WEAPON: Z100,000. A small, commercial-size LIFE cell hookup along a forearm bracer mount would unshoulder the burden of carrying the T. Coils into battle, instead serving as its own source of the coils. This would also provide unlimited coils.

G. Gauntlet Upgrades: General rule of thumb is Z50,000 apiece.
Charge: Harder, better, faster, stronger. The cables would launch at greater speed, longer distance, and cause additional damage on impact with a hostile target.
Modular Head: Select alternate tip options for cables. Chosen before deployment. Further development would open the weapon to greater diversification.
Impact Hammer: Adds a pneumatic one-two to any given strike, improving base damage.
Conductor: Integrated conduit linkup allows taser shock through the coils.
Knuckle Buster: Throughputs buster output to emitter gem studs on the striking surface. Replaces coil heads when in use. Further development would allow simultaneous deployment alongside coils.
Ceratanium Plate: Adds a forearm shield, capable of deflecting melee blows, plasma fire, etc.

OH BOY.

We gotta get that Grapple Gauntlet with the intergrated WEAPON. It takes a huge chunk out of our cash, but it's a no-brainer given how often we bring the coils with us anyway.

I vote we either get the conductor option now and replace one of our Pullu cells, or replace both of our cells and save up for the conductor.

and if you need help with that, I've got the majority of the possible upgrades here

I need to think about this but I fucking WANT that gauntlet.
>>
Oh boy

That's a lot of good stuff

Grapple Gauntlet is obvious, but can't decide between integration (and use the leftover to replace a Pullu Cell) or vote for the "LMR" (feels like a "vwes weakness identifier")
>>
>>3443415
Might be a bit biased, but definitely voting the Grapple Gauntlet (100k) version since it frees up a VWES slot, provides UNLIMITED COIL WORKS, and allows for a hell of a lot of synergy and advantage. I like the Impact Hammer and Ceratanium plates personally. Though when you say choose two upgrades from the list, do we pay for those too?

If we undo the Andes fund, might be able to afford the Rampulsky focusing lens too as it makes us hit harder when in a dash, I think.

And, of course, replace the Pullu if we can't afford the next version up.
>>
>>3443409

That Loutre Ballast Buoy looks like something we should be strongly considering for when we go up against Atlantica. If we do get it, what would it take to recharge the catalytic gas?

>>3443441

Unless I'm misreading this, if we get the G. Gauntlet, we get the conductor plus one other upgrade for /free/ with it, whether we get the WEAPON version or not.

And yeah, it's really, really hard to argue against getting the gauntlet, and pretty hard to argue against the WEAPON version, despite taking nearly 2/3 of our current cash

>>3443415

So do I understand correctly that the G. Gauntlet is /not/ something offered by Osiris, but is, in fact, the schematic that Emerald brought?

You say damage is less than a lobeam. What sort of percent are we talking here? And how would it compare to a punch from Anode now?
>>
>>3443469
>Though when you say choose two upgrades from the list, do we pay for those too?

Nope--you get the first two free. All further upgrades are 50,000. Evolutions off those, where relevant, will be individually costed.
>>
Oh geez, that’s a lot of goodies. I’m inclined for those processor upgrades though...

>Korman “Potter” Synchro @ 129k
Speed kills, and I think Anode could do with some top-of-the-line reaction times
>2x Pullu Cells @ 10k
They worked rather well

Referencing >>3443454
>Targeting Pointer- Birdal I14 “Sisman” @ 16k
Because accuracy is good, and in combination with the reaction time would be really good for our on-the-move action.

At the small cost of 155k Zenny, Anode would be more effective in the field with what he already has.
>>
>>3443476
>That Loutre Ballast Buoy looks like something we should be strongly considering for when we go up against Atlantica. If we do get it, what would it take to recharge the catalytic gas?
HQ could do it for you for a small fee. 16th provides the canisters. They use it for no reason. No reason whatsoever.

>So do I understand correctly that the G. Gauntlet is /not/ something offered by Osiris, but is, in fact, the schematic that Emerald brought?
Correct. Nothing is listed in the Osiris catalogue entries.

>You say damage is less than a lobeam. What sort of percent are we talking here? And how would it compare to a punch from Anode now?
It's a dedicated fist weapon, so--by itself--it'd be around 50% of the damage. However, it's as quick or as slow as any number of hand strikes, and will combo beautifully either for additional damage or creating openings to exploit, or exploiting openings you've created. Compared to now, the only time Anode is doing proper damage with his fists is against weaker opponents or when activating Shriver. It's a flat upgrade--and still Shriver compatible.

Somehow, despite it being in bold, I missed that. That's a horse of a different color, then.

We have two different types of gauntlets, one costing 50k and the other 100k

Because from the way is written I think it is the second
>>
>>3443415
Is the Conductor upgrade separate from TCoil's Improved Conductivity upgrade? Is there any benefit to commiting to that before getting gauntlet?
>>
>>3443517
Potter occupies the synchro slot and would replace Anode's current Rudd synchro; Weston, Geller, and Miller vie for subprocessor slot; Jardine occupies a slot you'd have to deliberately seek out competing equipment for.

Weston subprocessor has relatively trivial benefits for someone with OPAL but would be good for a squaddie. I would imagine Anode's use of it would be marginal at best.
Korman subprocessors are the best on the commercial market; asking a couple of Toolcircuits to work you up a dedicated uplink and aggregator should be quite feasible with the Korman API.

Buster equip slots are listed on the wiki article for busters. Notwithstanding the buster model itself, slots for buster equipment are power supply, WEAPON cell, igniter, exciter, compressor, chamber ring, thermal regulator, degaussing node, recombinator, accelerator, amend node, focusing lens, muzzle, retort, and augment.

Unclear on Cardin questions, please rephrase.

Anode does not have sufficient leg space for the Osprey system. Some of his squad have no EAS and could make use of the Osprey AAS.

Canard takes up a retractable scapular modification slot and would not compete with any current equipment. Also works when not using Jumpjet, provided you're in a stable enough jump or plummet.
Voyageur does not conflict with your current ailieron. You can use both.

Gel/tape are for minor field repairs. Capacitor release would likely burn them out at anything above a trickle feed; if Anode wants to dump capacitor load into powering something, they can take it, but the conducting element isn't intended to deliver the massive fry that Anode puts out. They could conceivably be put to use as a minor zapping annoyance, but nothing substantially damaging.

It's nowhere near complex enough for that. You'd need a custom product or something not available in the current supply.

>>3443593
Unless otherwise specified, they should be compatible with the busters the squad uses. Please note that the LMR, Walton, and Hackenschleimer are not upgrades, they are busters in their own right.
>>
>>3443415
I believe our choice here is obvious

>>

Walton with a good node is probably a good idea. I understand Macdonald sells one.

If you had a good enough hardpoint and mounting, you could put the big gun on there. You'll want to make sure it's reinforced, that is a big gun.

Voting for the integrated WEAPON G. Gauntlet, for sure. Personally I like the Charge and Conductor upgrades.

>>
Integrated WEAPON Grapple Gauntlet with Conductor and Ceratanium Plate is my vote for primary purchase.

I think we should look into getting Marx a melee weapon and training with Em after the way he handled himself during the seige. I could see him getting good use out of the JM2 Thermal Knife.

Derby might make for a solid combat medic if we send him to get training with Lifesavers on how to use the Gel/Tape.
>>
>>3443398
Do not forget the 22k for the himilayas. That should open stuff up.
Still, we should go for that gauntlet with intergrated WEAPON. This frees up a slot for more weapons.
As for what to get for the 2 free upgrades, depends.
Personally, I go with the Knuckle Buster and Shield Plate. Opens up for a charge shot or 'marking' enemies with our shield shredders. Combine it with Rampulsky lens for more bang.
121,500, a loutre for 1500 plus 14000 for kit replacement leaves 20003 zenny plus himilayas. 42003 for something later.

Raikousen and Jumpjets both wreath us in various flavors of damage cloaks. Since these hug the body and I assume the jump booster is a larger than average external mod, would the jump booster receive significant wear from the fire/electric?

Same thing for the frits, do the Jump Boosters count under "some areas cannot be fritted" and thus make them vulnerable to beams/fire even with frit?

>Korman “Weston” 2Win Subprocessor: One of the better detection & investigation utilities on the market, though not in the same class as something like OPAL, the Weston 2Win is a substantial improvement on the erratic Weston S Subprocessor and provides two-source confirmation of identified risks and uncertainties, allowing detection of many traps and scanning through forms of stealth. Slight paranoia is noted in some users, though the company offers a software package to tweak results and reduce this outcome. Z45,000
Surprised there isn't more discussion over this. It's a piece of equipment designed to make Anode better at shenanigans.

>Grapple Gauntlet (Integrated) (100,000)
+Charge & Ceratanium Plate
This thing is fucking beautiful. Extra WEAPON with unlimited coils, holy shit yes! Since we're getting this for the cables, an upgrade that makes it better cables seems obvious. The plate gives Anode an option to block instead of always having to dodge, which might work better with his "built to take hits" mindset. We'll need some practice using it, obviously.

Total: Z156,000

>>3443717

That integrated Weapon Grapple Gauntlet is a must
Id also go with the Ceratanium Plate amd the Charge options
And hopefully we can integrate the Conductor option later on, But a shield is a good option for Anode (Especially if we train to use it properly) and having a charge weapon that doesn't use VWES slots and ammo is an excellent boost tp Anode's arsenal
Replacing both our Pullu Cells is a solid option
That's 110,000z I'd be very willing to. Spend right away on these upgrades/replacements
The Huron “Voyageur” Ailieron for 9,000z is alsp a tempting option to boost our air time, especially if the increased overall air time means we are reducing the time cost between landing and the next jump jet flight, a potential good boost to mobility
I'm down for grabbing at least one Manitoba JM2 Thermal Knife, for the BB 9,800z
Cardin “Souris” Scout Drone is definitely another item I'd be interested in picking up for the BB 5,100z

Grabbing all that would cost us 133,900z out of our total 157,003z
Leaving 23,103z for other stuff
I'd definitely be interested in getting more gear for the BB
>>
Just a note that if we get the Macdonald “Talbot” Chamber Ring, we can always pass it on to a BB when we replace it with something more expensive.

It's cheap and the benefit is not very diminished when passed on.
>>
>>3443631
To clarify, I would like the Charge and Conductor (as long as the conductor option does not require us to first get the 'improved conductivity' upgrade for the cables first)
>>
Submitting my order for consideration.

1) Integrated WEAPON grapple gauntlet (100K)
-Just pure YES from me. This would open up a load of options for Anode, and those coils are a consistent part of his toolkit. For the two free upgrades:
-Charge. Going all in.
-Knuckle buster.

2) Pullu cells X 2. These things won me over. I'd like to keep them. (10K total)

3)Canard glide system. Combined with Anode's other tools, you could probably Batman your way across a city with this. (23K)

4) Voyageur Aileron for more glidey. (9K)

That leaves 15K left over.

As nobody wants speedy reactions (and with good reason I suppose), I will change my vote to

>G. Gauntlet, Integrated WEAPON
>Charge: Harder, better, faster, stronger. The cables would launch at greater speed, longer distance, and cause additional damage on impact with a hostile target.
>Impact Hammer: Adds a pneumatic one-two to any given strike, improving base damage.
>Conductor: Integrated conduit linkup allows taser shock through the coils.

>1x Pullu Cell
So damn useful
>>
>>3443415
>Knuckle Buster: Throughputs buster output to emitter gem studs on the striking surface. Replaces coil heads when in use. Further development would allow simultaneous deployment alongside coils.

I'd like to get some clarification on this.

- First, is the purpose of this essentially to be able to fire off buster shots directly in the chin of whoever we're uppercutting?
- Second, do I understand correctly that we would have to choose at mission-loadout time whether to go with Coil Gauntlet or Buster Gauntlet? 'Cause that seems to drastically reduce the value of this option without the "further development" mentioned...
>>
>>3444191
My understanding of it is that it's like our existing buster's hands. We can coil or buster, just not at the same time.

Okay, folks. I've got a bit of bad news.

During editing, a line was missed--the one about the two free upgrades on purchase of the Gauntlet. It was too much for one package, and ultimately neither Cain Labs nor myself are happy with it.

With the understanding that the upgrades are all still on the table, albeit at the 50,000 zenny cost, are you okay with letting us walk that one back to just the 50 or 100 for base glove/WEAPON integrated glove? This is our bad and we'll cop to it--if there's mass outcry about moving that goalpost, we can leave it where it is.

Thanks as always for both your reading and your patience, and Q&A follow-up to come.

>>As a solid alloy weapon, do these(or the Impact Hammer upgrade) count as armor penetrating?
>>Does the Knuckle Buster come with it's own slots for Buster Emitter/Lens?
>>
>>3443517
>Do the coils from the gauntlets retain their monofilament wires?
No--and it's worth noting that to create the gauntlet, you'll need to permanently surrender the VWES data as you currently have it. If you want the bladed braid systems, it'll be a relatively easy re-addition since it's already highly compatible with the data, but it will cost, likely as an alternate coil head type.

>If we want to move these somewhere other than the arms, are we locked to the arms as soon as we purchase the gauntlets?
After creation, you might be able to remodel the system, but it's going to cost and most likely be far more unintuitive and difficult to master. If you can tell me what you've got in mind, that might help.

>As a solid alloy weapon, do these(or the Impact Hammer upgrade) count as armor penetrating?
Not AP, no. It's not impossible in the future.

>Does the Knuckle Buster come with it's own slots for Buster Emitter/Lens?
It'll serve as a throughput for your existing systems, so no.

>>3443527
With Knuckle Buster, yes.

>>3443534
For the sake of simplicity, your squad already opted to rebuild their damaged outer armor layers out of their own checks.

>>3443581

>>3444191
The purpose is more to give you access to your buster while the weapon is "readied," but yes, shooting a fucker right in the chin after a punch is absolutely a feature.

You'd be able to switch between coil and buster modes with Knuckle Buster--it's more re-enabling buster capabilities with a big old fist ring fitted over your hand.

>>3444947
You'll be able to discuss this with them. If you want you can ask them their thoughts before you commit your zenny, but bear in mind basically every single thing on here except the training shot amend node would be a flat improvement. And they'd be kids in a candy store.

>>

We were correct that someone was trying to make our lives hell during part 1.
>>
>>3445623
Pfft, as if anyone would just up and send wave after wave of bird reploids at him during a mission, or build an entire roster for him out of birds, or reveal that Em was secretly a bird all along, orchestrating events behind the curtain but maintaining the facade of being a friendly neighborhood sword man only to pull the rug out from under Anode later on in an effort to adapt his DNA so he can ultimately build the SWORD and turn it on the upper echelons of Hunter Command because they made one too many green jokes. Who would do a thing like that?
>>
Actually, thinking on it, if we have any leftovers, it might be a good idea to put it into the range.
>>
>>3445646
Anode's been moving up the ranks; I'd be surprised if there aren't people Anode doesn't know that actively want him dead. Remember, it's not paranoia if they're actually out to get you.

>After creation, you might be able to remodel the system, but it's going to cost and most likely be far more unintuitive and difficult to master. If you can tell me what you've got in mind, that might help.
I need to compete with the Grapple Gauntlet design itself, oof. This isn't likely to win then, but may as well give it a shot.

>>Waist - Generally around the area where Shred Zone would have been
>Focus on acting on the center of mass, reducing jerkiness to accuracy and maximizing speed without stressing the body
>Allows spinning like a top similar to Shred Zone, although practically would require boosted reaction time and subprocessors to effectively shoot or move while spinning.
>Least easy to aim
>May not have space for alternate heads, etc.

>>Shoulder Hardpoint
>Still not as accurate as arm, but positioned at an angle where most T. Coils would be fired anyway.
>Optional swivel turret. May be difficult to multitask while fighting in exchange for comparable accuracy to arm configuration.
>Hardpoint allows explosive firing speed and possibly retraction.
>Possible alternate configuration that latches on and grips debris as makeshift pauldrons for added reusable defense.
>Likely cannot aim downwards

No anon, when we buy a piece we can buy an evolution or three for that piece. We have plenty of options, and now we have to do that even slower. Maybe In a few real-time years we'll start to see close to fully kitted out.

>>3446012

>>
>>3445011
That's fine, stuff happens during editing. Makes the non-integrated gauntlet a bit more appealing, but I'm willing to wait on the shield for unlimited coils. Sticking with my original vote >>3443964

>>3445329
btw, HC, what ended up happenig to that Ride Armor piece we got from wrecking Crewd's Ox? Is it enough to get the Crossmore moving again?

>>3445544
I'd be more worried about weird logic leaps, such as deciding the reason we can never give Cath her birthday present is because she's avoiding Anode so she and Blitz can build an electric bat child.

But honestly, from the description, it sounds like our personality will affect the Jardine more than the other way around. I still think a piece of equipment that lets Anode come at problems from a different angle could be a huge boon in the quest to Get Good.

And maybe help us figure out what Cryptic McALLCAPS is up to.
>>
>>3445011
Well, my purchase desire stays the same.>>3444429
My main concern is money. Even the cash we got from the mission, the sheer amount of options and slots makes filling out our gear tough. Are there ways to further supplement our income or acquire parts?
>>
>>
>>3446749
Could always see if any of the other units have fun side activities. The game I ran had the Seventh have a small gambling den, for example, let people try and win some extra cash or help the Berets get new toys. Another fun one was 16th having a "combat mechaniloid testing zone" treated as a battlebots arena.

A different approach to earning could be investing or production, admittedly. I mean, I could see Em and Anode trying their hand at brewing, for example.
>>
>>3447210
Alright we need a scene if Anode and Em brewing Moonshine out behind the Barracks now
>>
>>3447224
Beer is brewed. Moonshine is distilled.
>>
>>3446143
Look at it this way:
For 100,000 (more on that in the future), you're not just getting a melee weapon, you are effectively taking the Faster Spool and Wire Reclaim upgrades, the Nonlethalized sidegrade, plus modernizing against potential downgrades from tech marching on, plus not only getting infinite cables, you're freeing up a VWES slot. The last time infinite ammo was on the table, it took Saetos's whole upgrade to do, and that cost a VWES slot.
>>
>>3447255
But it also opens us up to a plethora of Fisting jokes from India!
>>
>>3447310
lets be honest, our entire kit could be taken for sexual innuendo if India so chooses. Don't even get started on our wires.
>>
>>3447310
We already have those with the Shell Punches anyway, what's a few more jokes?
>>
>>3447210
Wouldn't really help us with our finances, but we might want to try encouraging Em to work on designing weapons as a side business. He's shown a knack for it and it would encourage him to interact with more people (maybe Flares?). Plus it would help ensure he has enough money for his rebuild after we punch his face in.
>>
>>3446236
Crossmore's almost ship-shape again. The Ox is just an optional accessory to add a frontal dash attack.

>>3446749
Possibly in the future, but bear in mind it's intentional that you've gotten more options than you can possibly spend on. Also bear in mind that Anode has had a meteoric increase in power while being unable to afford everything that catches his eye.
>>
>>3447448
I've been thinking that Em might do a lot better if he was transferred to 16th where he could both focus on equipment design and be one of their top combatants. He seems to do his best when he is designing or revamping new weapons.

India is another that could use a transfer and 7th now wants her and her jet.
>>
>>3447448
>>3447558
Thing is it breaks up the current core of the Fourth, as we're the long timers now. Still, Em as a master weaponsmith sounds pretty on point, and we could tell him it would let him work on even more designs and ideas that he's had. India, well, she wants a transfer, but right now the Fourth is doing her good with supplying her materials for building her new jet.

What about finding a way to replicate the Phaseshift in the lance and then trying to make a system to mass produce it? Or something along those lines, possibly help assist the next layer of hunter defenses?
>>
>>3447558
Quick way to getting Anode killed is to suggest that to either of them.
>>
>>3447532
Nice, what's left on the Crossmore before it's back up, then? Maybe we could go bounty hunting for it.
>>
>>3447255
It could just be me missing It In the description, but It didn't seem like all of that was In the package deal. I thought we got Infinite cables and a free VWES slot (Though the gauntlet can be destroyed so there's that risk) and a moderate Improvement to unarmed melee on one fist. All three of the Wire upgrades and the modernizing you just mentioned I wasn't aware of. Thanks for clarifying, I feel much better about the situation. I still grieve the Ceramite shield even so

Also your little side note about price confirms that this gauntlet Is only so cheap for what It gives because Emerald's footing a big portion of the bill.
>>
did we ever solve what was up with Moloch?
>>
>>3447869
There are theories, but for those who haven't seen the main ones, the easy way to put it is horned devils have a second, fake head as a survival mechanism. The first personality is Moloch's fake head. The smart Moloch, he was the real deal
>>
>>3447929
so the smart one is the real Moloch then? what does that make the other one
?
>>
>>3447931
What we are guessing is that Moloch is an upgrade resurrection of Komodo Green with a fake thug "Moloch" personality that acted as a cover identity to hide Komodo's resurrection.

We beat down the A-Rank Moloch and made S or G rank Komodo wake up who beat our shit in.

Same with every "tracking" related buster upgrade, really
>>
>>3444028
Agreed. The shield painting effect is the kind of thing that would have utility even if it was its own device.

>>3447255
My opinions on the gauntlet are contingent on how obtrusive the device is going to be. I just don't see it ever being a superior choice over our beam weapons in close combat, and if it fits over our hand, it might take longer to switch to our buster.
>>
>>3448012
That said, freeing up a VWES slot is worth 100k on its own. I still favor the upgrades that keep it our utility weapon, with less of a focus on using the spikes in melee. Now's as good a time as any to add a charge or conductivity
>>
>>3448012

>My opinions on the gauntlet are contingent on how obtrusive the device is going to be. I just don't see it ever being a superior choice over our beam weapons in close combat, and if it fits over our hand, it might take longer to switch to our buster.
We have 2 busters (one on each arm). Until we buy Knuckle Buster, while the Gauntlet is equipped that arm's buster is disabled. Once Knuckle Buster is purchased the Gauntlet will not interfere with that arm's buster.

One advantage of the gauntlet as a melee weapon is that it won't be hampered by anti-beam defenses. 50% of low beam's damage is more than a low beam would deal against something that only take 33% damage from beam weaponry.

>>
>>3448085
Just for clarification
Does the Gauntlet make the buster on the arm it is mounted on unusable for the entirety of the mission it is equipped
Or does it only obstruct that buster while we are using this cable functions?
>>
>>3449157
The latter. You can ready/unready it, but it's not as quick as shifting to your buster from your bare hand.
>>
>>3449180
So the knucklebuster first restores the original speed, then makes both usable simultaneously. That about right?

While looking at the alternative munitions, one thing to come to mind was ways to do area denial or zoning even if we need to swing around with both hands. The digging missile, as I understood it, could be purchased as stock and loaded into a hardpoint device or two. I know that would likely not be popular, but I kind of wonder about things like that then mixed with Anode's DNA or not. But I admittedly have strange ideas like that.

>>3449868
As a rule, we're never going to outright wreck the thing on you. Stuff like that falls along narrative, not punitive grounds, and will always be accompanied by ways around the problem, or alternate compensation. We're not out to screw you, there are no bad/trap picks in your toolkit.

All that said, if you incur heavy damage it might need repair costs, but unless you go out of your way to destroy it, we don't have any designs on fun removal.

I too want to make Anode a master of CQC, It's a great complement to what he has now and makes us dangerous to engage In close quarters at all times In addition to everything else we have going.

Installing the Misericorde on our gauntlet could be a really good idea. What about a contraption underneath our arm/wrist that slides It Into our hand on command while keeping It somewhat concealed? We wouldn't make a tell to arm ourselves with It that way, so In the middle of a combo or whenever BAM, Instant knife.

>>
>>3452068
They have the lobeam knives, sure you want the thermal knife?
>>
>>3452161
The thermal knife should be an upgrade over the standard ones they have. I think we should start prepping Marx to be the squad's melee specialist and start training Derby as a field medic.
>>
>>3452173
This going off the understanding that the thermal knife is in effect a Fire elemental hi-beam equivalent.
>>
>>3452173
>>3452184
Question though, why peg Marx as the melee buff? They likely should be on paths they choose - could also see Susan dabbling as medic for example, or all of them deciding the best way to avoid getting slagged is to rely on superior firepower.
>>
>>3452285
Susan has taken the roll of squad leader and sniper. Having your medic be the squad leader leads to trouble as they can not direct others effectively while their attention is focused on patching up others.

Marx seems to have taken to the roll of quick reaction and interception with his shield. If he had been better geared for a melee fight he might have been able to lock down that melee maverick that the BB faced off against during the siege reducing the amount of damage the squad took before Anode arrived.

Derby seems to have a tendency to take apart and put back together the squad's gear when he has the time which syncs up well with a medic/repair specialization.
>>
>>3452358
Fair points.
>>
>>3452358
If the tools were different, i'd want to set Marx up as the Interceptor/Interference guy, like a defensive specialist. That would probably require one of those sub processors to set up right though, if not superior armor or shields, and thats not really in the cards here.
>>
>>3452378
I think I have an answer to that, based off the Himalaya funds no less. Instead of a memorial, what about a fund open to the guys who were there (at least to start) where people can put in and take out cash for upgrades for themselves or the base? With a simple rule being you pay the help back when you can, so someone else gets the equipment to stay alive.
>>

Okay, runoff vote time. Less the gauntlet with WEAPON and plus your memorial fund, you've got 78,003 zenny.

Let's start with the definite category: Pullu cells.
[ ] 1 cell. Z5,000
[ ] 2 cells. Z10,000

Most popular:
[ ] Korman “Jardine” Lateral Interpolator: A very useful ability for strategists and commanders, lateral thinking allows correlation of unrelated data points to arrive at logical inferences. Korman’s processor is a standout that has been used in command-level Reploids around the world, though it requires careful calibration via the attached software package to avoid leaning too hard to either optimism or pessimism when making inferential correlations. Z51,000.

[ ] Huron “Voyageur” Ailieron: Long streamlining ailieron intended for the back and retractable/foldable when primary flight system not engaged. Improves uptime. Razor edges help cut through entangling situations. Z9,000.

[ ] Macdonald “Rampulsky” Focusing Lens: A smart lens that adjusts escape velocity based on the user’s current movement to ensure complete ejection of the payload during a punch or a dash. Useful for ensuring maximum shear at close range when a buster shot is being fired in motion. Z21,500.

[ ] Manitoba JM2 Thermal Knife: Not primarily intended as a weapon, this knife can nonetheless output a powerful contained flame intended to help cut through obstacles, and can cause serious injury if misused. Z9,800.

As before, all other options are still on the table. Please try to be clear and if you change your vote, tag your prior one for easy crossreferencing.

>[ ] Huron “Voyageur” Ailieron: Long streamlining ailieron intended for the back and retractable/foldable when primary flight system not engaged. Improves uptime. Razor edges help cut through entangling situations. Z9,000.

>>
>>3452605
You're thinking of Distance Retune(which may or may not be worth it if it's part of an alternate upgrade path that leads to 100% uptime)

This is jumpjets
>As the jets build energy for use, they will project limited compression bubbles outside the exhaust to use as additional energy storage. When in this “overcharge,” energy will visibly gather at the jets and contribute to the flame wreath on ignition, resulting in a more powerful flame effect on impact

also
>Continued investment into the Jump Jet may permit retuning of the flame envelope around a beam blade projection on the move, or increased Blueshift power to release deadly bursts of UV lasers in all directions on boost.
this upgraded seems like the one that will most directly lead to beam saber integration or UV goodness
>>
>>3452487
>My issue with the Jardine is that it improves the user's tactical decision making. As players in a quest, that's OUR job.

I agree with that. But it depends on how it would work in a Quest-Mechanics sense.

If it takes choices away, that's a bad mechanic. But if it functions as a secondary Gut Feeling Processor, it wouldn't be so bad.

Take the food deliveries thing from last mission, for example. Everyone pretty resoundingly agreed that that was weird Maverick behavior, but it never got priority because... they were stealing pizzas and junk. So what? But a hunch that says, "No, hold up, this is weird, and they're up to something that doesn't make sense given the information we have..." Well, that's valuable. So long as there are still options on how to deal with said new information, it could be just as interesting as going into situations mostly blind.

All that said, I'm not in favor of it. For the simple fact that these things are mass-market processors, as Korman is literally advertising. The Mavericks already have them. On the list of "Things to do to beat the Mavericks", I would put "Think like them" near the top of the list.

I think the thing is a virus magnet, in other words.

Subverting your enemy's leadership is ALWAYS the most efficient plan in any war. And giving them all the same operating hardware is like writing Sigma a blank check when he delivers your pizza.

Imagine this but instead of accessing your keyboard we let Cain Labs tinker around in Anode's head
>>

Yeah, I would rather not have Cain Labs directly in our brains. Crazy enough as it is.
Sides, we have a sorta issue. In terms of missions, they aren't really squad based in the short term and more fire power is needed to handle the likes of tanker and yamatoad.
It also opens up the path for more upgrades and possibly the better stuff for the Jumpjet.

There’s are quite a few bits I like, between Pullu, Voyageur and the thermal knife, but again, I’d rather not split my vote between different things when there’s only one thing I’m definite on.

Plus we may want to donate some money to getting our Berets upgraded as well, they won’t always make bank.

Also: beer.

Main reason so many of us are opting for it is because it helped us come back to spend what we made. After all, we just got a surprise G up our ass, we still have a S with known S backup, an A acting as a rallying point to other mavs, and a B who is doing god knows what, and whatever happens with Moloch. “Holy fuck, Em,” you say, examining the gauntlet specs. “Did you design this?”

“No, it was the Tooth Fairy. I’m just a horrible plagiarist. It came to me in a dream. A Shaolin monk bestowed it upon me after a vision quest. I pulled it out of a stone. The Lady of the Lake--”

You unceremoniously pick Em up (“okay, we’re doing this now?”) and bowl him into the wall.

“--Yes, it was me, dumbass,” he replies succinctly.

“The hell are you doing here, instead of in R&D?”

He actually bristles a bit at that. “My job. I’m just a dumb fuck with a screwdriver. I’d rather be out there drinking or stabbing shit.”

You shake your head, and go back to the schematic. “And this is all based around T. Coil?”

“Coil, and your DNA. Dunno if you noticed, but you get on pretty well with it for such low-grade data.”

“So my true soul is that of a garbage disposal monofilament wire?”

He shrugs. “Maybe it’s the grapple-y part. You do embody the truest essence of hooker.”

The Berets’ heads are a tennis match as they look between you and Em during your exchange.

“What I’m getting at,” Em continues, “is that you had some strong natural synergy, and you’ve had this long enough to get some good play out of it. And, well, no offense, but you’re never gonna be a blademaster--”

“Gee, thanks,” you grumble. Susan snickers. Flak shushes him.

“--So this might be more your speed.” He pantomimes a quick slash-and-jab for emphasis. “I’ve actually got pretty much all the parts for it. If you’re interested…?”

“Em,” you say seriously. “You gave me a grappling hook that I can punch people with. If I said no, you should have dispatched me as a maverick infiltrator.”

He chuckles. “Yeah. Yeah. I’ll get the shit together.”

You go back to your other prospectives, scrolling through the list. “I’m still feeling burned about missing the fucking pizza thing,” you muse aloud.

“Pizza? Burned?” Em asks, nose in a cabinet full of bits and bobs.

“Please don’t encourage him,” Marx says flatly.

“So I’m looking at this Jardine thing. Ever heard of it?” You ask.

“‘Lateral interpolator?’” Em hefts a box full of parts onto the counter with a clatter-clang-rattle. “Think so.”

“Think you can install one for me?”

He snorts. “Do brain surgery on my best friend? Having been stabbed in mine once, I can’t really recommend it.”

Flak blinks. “Um…”

You shake your head at him silently. “Fair enough. Guess I’ll get the Lifesavers to chuck it in, while they’re in there.”

“Ask them if they can do something about your shit taste, while you’re at it,” Em offers helpfully.

You snicker. “Em, I just got hosed down with caustic alkalide, your zings ain’t find a home here.”

“Well, yeah,” he replies, fishing out what looks like a tiny saber and a carbon-fiber matte black brick. “You were already basic, everything else is just gilding the lily.”

You ignore the sass as you check other options--the extended ailerons for your jump pack certainly appeal, and it’s a no-brainer to replace the expended Pullu cells.

Finally, Em hefts the box again, divested of about three-quarters of its contents, and stands up. “So let’s go hit the Range.”

“Again? That’ll be my third time today.”

“You got cored out by a lizard,” Em states flatly, “and the only reason you’re still here is that you’re just too damn stupid to die.”

Susan snickers again. Flak pushes his hat down over his eyes.

“So yes, we’re going for a romp. And you need to learn how to punch shit if you’re going to use this new toy.”

“Fine, fine,” you relent. “Not like I’m tired of getting my ass kicked or anything.”

“There’s exactly one way that stops happening,” Em singsongs, tossing you a small object over his shoulder.

You catch it--it’s got roughly finger-sized grooves on a squeeze trigger mechanism that looks like he took it off a power tool. Two harpoon-tip heads protrude from the outer surface.

“Proof of concept,” Em explains. “Pressurized gas canister. It’ll work for the basics. For a spar, at least.”

You turn it over before sliding it onto your hand. “Does it retract?”

He nods. “Won’t stand up to any real high-flying moves, at least not more than once or twice. Fortunately, I’m not here for Zorro class.”

He sets down the box of parts on the bench without breaking stride, marches into one of the training rings, and turns on his heel, hands lowering to his sides. “Put ‘em up.”

The gaggle of Berets quickly disperse from behind you as you step into the circle. “All right, then. Holds barred?”

“If you can hit me, you deserve to,” he replies. “Fists, lance, dashes. No VWES.”

“All ri-” You lunge in on a burst dash, coming in with a savage cross that he springs back from, touching down with you.

Em grins. “Good.”

“So what the hell--” You advance with a lunging punch, trying to use your better reach to good effect. Em sidesteps, pushing your arm aside with a palm.

“Would you know--” You hook your elbow back--he crouches and comes in under your guard.

“About punching, anyway?” You drop a hammer blow for the top of his head, crunching down low to follow with a sharp jab to the face.

Em’s not having any of it, dancing away unscathed. “C’mon, Anode. You know what almost every sword style has in common? Grapple.”

You keep up the pressure, trying to come in with a drive like Hutchins. He twists and bobs, coming around your side, and you quickly twist and try a snapping roundhouse. He follows through to break away, then comes back in as you lunge to chase, letting you breeze by.

“If your hand’s not on your weapon--” Em springs, this time deflecting from the edge of your reach instead of entering your guard, “--It’s controlling your opponent.”

You try to power straight through him again, forcing him to react to your speed and mass. He fakes left, then hops back and chops you in the side. He’s close in, now, and you try to conserve your motion with a sweeping low backhand. He hops--

And your lance snaps down like a falling column.

Em skids back, his own saber ignited and held reverse-grip overhead, having barely avoided having his helmet split open. He looks up at you again with a canny, hungry grin. ”Good.”

You mull over his comment. You’ve yet to even try to use the fist’s grapple-hooks as advertised, and he didn’t take a half-dozen openings he could’ve. But even still, forcing Em to draw is almost a win in its own right.

You’ve got two weapons, now, for both inside and outside of your reach. You’re not coordinated enough to dual wield blades, just yet, but you know a thing or two about throwing hands.

You find Em’s grin infectious. This feels like the start of something.

>Take the grapple out for a spin.
You throw your hand to the side and snap your fingers out, adjusting your grip on the lance. Em rolls his saber in his palm and cuts the blade, returning it to his shoulder and turning to narrow his profile.

You come in with a lunge, which he sidesteps, bending back to avoid your follow-up cross. You swirl your lance full-circle as you throw your gauntlet past his shoulder and fire the hooks. The trigger bucks in your palm as the metal digs against your knuckle, the twin prongs springing free and plunging into the ground. You retract, leaping past Em before he can exact a counterstrike, pulling yourself away from the engagement.

“Real one will have a bit more oomph,” Em says as they retract, back in his ready stance. “More force, faster pull.”

“Damage on contact?” You ask sweetly, snapping it up and firing them at his chest.

He twists past, then ducks your running swing. “Not by themselves!”

You snap the cables back and come in with a jab. Em dips a shoulder and comes in with a counterpunch, clanging into your chest. You windmill your arms as you step in, shouldering into a tackle that flows easily into a lance-and-fist thrust. He skids back, crossed sabers warding off your blows.

In you come, swinging and slicing. He dances and weaves, bobbing just out of the way with slips to put a prizefighter to shame. Your fists curl closer and closer with each attempt, and even as you catch only air, you can feel your form tighten up, your movements become more fluid.

The final exchange is as fast as you think you’ve ever moved--every bit of the power you used to buck trains and burn down mavericks in Vancouver, bottled into your forearms and released in explosive bursts. Punch, pommel spike, block the return, turn and crouch, hook and sling, spin ‘round, lance crossways, palm, retract. Em barrels in, matching your tempo with mounting ferocity, until at long last his follow-up strike finds you ready. Your fist meets his, and in the instant after, Em rocks back again, the point-blank hooks narrowly intercepted along the haft of his saber.

“I think we have a winner,” Em says.

You nod--you’re already seeing the possibilities. Lance, your knife, coil combos you can’t pull with the stand-ins… “This feels pretty fuckin’ good.”

Actually, I got a idea. Why not have Anode do some training with the berets while Em is building it? The issue is they got stabbed a bunch by someone too fast to handle. So why not give them pointers? Anode is speedy himself after all.
