Cover-art kindly provided by our noble artiste, Draw-anon, who kindly took time off repainting the Sistine Chapel for us. Look upon our prettyboy protagonist. Look upon his devilish smile and despair.

In last thread’s episode of Why Can’t I Hold All These Crits, our hero HARRY ‘TROUBLE MAGNET’ FLASHMAN found himself a natural prodigy with the fine and subtle weaponry that are... cannonballs. Um. He, uh, also confirmed that Fireface is Garp’s grandson, Hat got a Logia, and Crocodile got deadified. Afterwards, HQ threw out promotions like candy (mmm, candy), and the ship carrying Lolonoa Zolo has come under attack by Jedi Kn- uh, the Strawhats. At least you still have Wado Ichimonji.

We now return you to your scheduled idiocy.
>>
>call curly

All right. First up, the docks are an hour away. That means you need ENERGY. and energy means SUGAR.

So you grab a couple of pieces of candy and shove them in your candy-hole.

“IS THIS REALLY THE TIME?!” Ah, Lieutenant... one can’t expect someone of her pitiful rank to understand the wisdom of her superiors. How sad.

You ignore her, and focus on Mr Speedy again, who’s highly unimpressed by all this running in hot weather, and would rather have been in the shade somewhere. By a pool. With a little umbrella, and a massive head of lettuce.

Too bad, Mr Speedy, you’re a MARINE.

Curly picks up in short order, sounding harried. “Yes?”

“Hey Curly, any idea what’s going on?”

“I have no idea!” Wow, he sure can wail. “It sounds like Strawhat Luffy was really Mr 2 -“ OHHHH, that makes sense now... “- Rainbase is being invaded by okama, mi-mi-mi, and Princess Vivi is still- a prisoner! As I already knew! Of course!”

... He totally thought the Strawhats were inside the Palace, didn’t he? You can’t help but feel a little bit of glee that after having lied to you, he got lied to in return. Ouch. Then you feel bad, because being lied to sucks. A lot.

“The ship with Lolonoa on is being attacked,” you say. “So it sounds like the Strawhats have recruited this Kohza guy and... kept the Princess prisoner.” You and Tashigi hurtle around a corner, still on track for the docks. “We’ll be chasing them, but...”

“You don’t think you’ll catch them, do you?” He sounds frustrated.

“... Not really. They left at least last night, maybe before.”

“Understood. But - but, mi-mi-mi... I’ll admit, the Strawhats aren’t my priority! Even Kohza! But Princess Vivi MUST be returned!”

“And the duck?”

“... Yes, Carue too.”

>Then come with us! We haven’t gone too far yet, you can catch up with us.

“Then come with us! We haven’t gone too far yet, you can catch up with us.”

A brief pause. “That... i shouldn’t get involved in such matters...”

“Well, if you think not, then I guess-“

“But I’ll come anyway! I’ll mi-mi-meet you at the the docks!”

He hangs up. You and Tashigi look each other. Then shrug as one.

“Well, that’s that.” You dodge a couple of passersby.

“Yes,” Tashigi puffs, looking determined. “At least nothing more can go wrong!”

Glazed look on your face, you keep running.

(AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH, says a small voice deep at the back of your head.)

The next forty minutes are blur of rushing speed and then a load of hurry up and wait - Curly gets to the docks not too many minutes after the pair of you (riding a camel... makes sense, you guess), followed by all piling on to Garp’s ship, as the men hurriedly get it moving again to head out to sea.

Garp, apparently, is running around Rainbase, hunting down okama (there’s a sentence you never thought you’d hear). Considering what you know of his and Strawhat’s suspect he might not be dealing with the issue quite as quickly as he could be.

As the ship races along the river, you

“Okay, seriously... ducks? Military ducks? I mean, I’m from the Grand Line myself, but... ducks.” Seriously. Duuuuucks. Not that you’ve got anything against them, but... “Could you tell me where I can find one for myself?”

Curly gives you a long, pointed look. “Carue is the Captain of the Super Spot-Billed Duck Troops, the fastest super spot-billed duck in the entirety of Alabasta. He’s served for many years as a fine officer, as well as Princess Vivi’s good friend.”

“... So you’re saying none of them might wanna serve as Marines? Because we’re already making a uniform for a mermaid, I bet we could wrangle one for some giant ducks.”

Eventually, hours of sailing later, Bogart makes the announcement - Smoboss caught up with the remains of Hina’s ship, and set about rescuing the crew.

The good news is that the Strawhats aren’t really into killing, so there aren’t TOO many deaths - the bad news is Black Cage’s ship is barely seaworthy, and Roronoa Zoro is gone along with the rest of the Strawhats.

She’s so violent...

“The Commodore is going ahead to try and catch up with the Strawhats,” Bogart says, his monotone voice somehow making it extremely clear what he thinks the likelihood of this is. “We’ll be going back to collect Vice-Admiral Garp - it’ll take longer to drop you off and have you find another ship, so you’d best come with us.”

“Are you going to following the Strawhats as well, sir?” Tashigi sounds concerned - obviously not happier to be split from Smoboss and the rest than you are.

“Not quite - the next island along is Jaya, so that’s where the Strawhats, Commodore Smoker And ourselves will be heading, but we’ll be moving on to stop at a nearby Marine base for a while after that. You’re welcome to travel along to Jaya, but if we miss the Commodore on the way...”

“I’m sure we can meet up with him on Jaya,” Tashigi says quickly, before apologizing for the inconvenience.

First up, you deposit Mr Speedy with the ship's own den dens. He seems particularly enthused by the sizes and variety of lettuce offered, and apparently decides to claim them all as his own.

Figuring the others won't starve to death from one missed meal, you go off to challenge Curly to a spar.

With FANS.

He, amazingly, accepts.

It goes... okay. Not great, but admittedly it's been a little while since you properly used your fans, and boy oh boy, you've never actually sparred against someone who primarily fights with guns. Machine-guns. In their hair.

.... Okay then.

With all that surprise, while you don't get your ass kicked, you DO lose, and not too closely, either. Lesson learned - you're going to have to get better at mobility while using your fans. It's one thing to hold position and territory when your opponent needs to get close, but another when they can stand at range and shoot the crap outta you.

(Fans +1, increased use of mobility when using them!)

>okay versus fail

You begin the rematch with a bang (literally, dude's shooting at you). This time, you're a little more mobile, dishing and evading, though you don't necessarily take the fight to Curly.

You do, on the other hand, manage to take a leaf out of your spar with Fop, and carefully manipulate him into walking backwards and tripping over a step, which ends the spar pretty quickly.

It's not really a satisfying victory, and depended on his unfamiliarity with the ship, but it's still a victory. You guess.

Meh.

By the time you dock - Nanohana this time - Garp is ready and waiting to be brought aboard, along with the remainder of his and Smoboss' infantry who'd been left behind.

With night falling, the ship will be setting sail as quickly as possible towards Jaya, leaving Alabasta far behind. Curly's coming too - you doubt he's thrilled with the Strawhats right now, and maybe he can talk their 'hostage' into returning.

>>
>>3447214
>>3447214
Honestly? I'd say Flashman's got mixed feelings about the whole thing.

We caught Lolonoa and Fireface (and HOLY SHIT, WE CAUGHT A WHITEBEARD COMMANDER), but a lot of luck went into that, as opposed to our own raw skill. If even one thing had been slightly off, we'd have been taken out or worse. Also, we thought that Fop died for a short while, and that would have really sucked.

The situation in Alabasta is resolved, but it also involved a pirate getting the Shichibukai position, so they're pretty much thumbing their nose at the justice system and getting away with it. Also, they have a vendetta against us, as they literally scorched our name into the floorboards before crossing it out. Also, the Whitebeard pirates will want our head when they figure out all the details behind the incident.

We got promoted to Commander, which is freaking sweet, but we're a Commander in the Photography Division. Which is like being the lead singer of a rock band, but it's also a Christian band. The others got promotions as well, which is actually really cool, and Hat got an Acid Logia, so good on ya, Hat.

But now, the Strawhats are getting away, again. Lolonoa got busted out, AGAIN. And the princess is still a hostage (maybe?), the Strawhats now have new crewmates, including the vice president of the criminal organization that tried to take over a country, and the leader of the rebellion who is technically a criminal. And the latter just became a Sand Logia.

Now we're going after them, with Curly, who has been kind of lying to us, but for a good reason, and he's still an okay guy as a person. So it's mixed.

There were a lot of positives, but also a lot of negatives. I imagine Flashy will want to really train himself so that he can prevent this from happening again.
>>
>>3447250
>Flashy will want to really train himself so that he can prevent this from happening again.

...But training won't have stopped a bunch of things which happened in Alabasta - Garp pulling strings to get his grandsons off scot free, people siding with pirates because that gives them the most reward, the incompitance (both real and faked) of others.

Flashy needs to accept that might won't solve everything at some point. Cue Akainu
>>
>>3447214
>Mixed bag. Good things that happened were great, bad things that happened were really shitty, some will haunt us for a long time. We learned some things we shouldn't and some other things that are totally awesome. We got a new companion but were separated from most of our crew. Garp morphed from a horrifying demon from the past into a pretty cool(if still a bit scary) dude. A mixed bag, but it all ended up relatively fine.
>>
>>3447240
W-whatever, it's not like that impresses me or anything, b-baka...!

And these are all very useful, thanks guys! I'm gonna go eat now, but next sort-of-arc instead of travelling with sis and Curly will be a few days with Garp's crew (and Fireplace, ARRRRGGHHHHH), followed by taking a small boat in to Jaya while Garp's ship fucks off elsewhere.

Proud of what we achieved; we exposed Crocodile, helped save a country, got justice for Zoro backstabbing us, took down one of Whitebeard's commanders, helped Hat become a fuckin logia, learned how to yeet cannonballs from Garp himself and got a good chunk of the crew promoted.
On the other hand, annoyed at how quickly Roronoa got out the moment we weren't keeping an eye on him. Ace got out by becoming a Warlord. Crocodile's fruit is in the hands of a strawhat. We found out someone we trusted had been lying to us from the start. Whitebeard is going to want us even deader than before on account of Ace's new job. And after Garp pulling strings for his grandkids we lost a lot of faith in the marines.
So, a lot more confident in ourselves and our crewmates, packaged with a lot less trust in everyone else.

If people want to tell Fop, they're welcome to vote to do so. I'd be happy to write the resulting confused-blue-screen-of-death!

Anyhoo, I think this is becoming a confused mess with vote changes that is rather cut my arms off than tally, So how about this:

You will NOT run into any Strawhat besides Usopp in Mocktown. In order not to be recognized by him, however, you CANNOT wear/use your jitte or fans, so they'll have to be in a bag or left in an inn. You can still wear/use Cut-chan, Ka-tan, Piero-san and Pistol-chan.

You will also switch back into Marine uniform before getting to Skypiea, and can wear/use all weapons there.

Also because it's dumb and fueling Fob's delusions is dumb cause he's just going to feel like a massive idiot and that Flashman was laughing at him the entire time when the truth EVENTUALLY comes out.

Friendships built on lies don't last and lying and saying 'Oh I'm Totally A Woman' is a pretty big one.

>>
>>3447531
He went for a nutshot that we no sold.
>>
>>3447531
The joke was that Flashy tanked the nutshot because '''he''' had no nuts to shot, not because he was wearing a cup.

Which doesn't make sense because a Sanji tier crotch kick would absolutely make a woman be in agony too.
>>
>>3447538

Anime logic.
>>
>>3447531
He knows you're a guy.

ALSO does anyone mind doing the standard 'two actions a day' to Jaya? I can do otherwise, it's just that nothing much interesting is gonna happen on the way unless you specifically vote for it. It's two days to get there.
>>
>>3447531
Interestingly, back when I did fencing, guys wore cups and girls wore chest protectors which were like two shallow dishes, when then went over the chest.

Getting hit in the crotch still hurts, but getting hit in the chest is the real bitch.
>>
>>3447531
As far as I'm aware, getting hit between the legs is still VERY painful for women given how many sensitive nerves are down there.

The angle of delivery is just narrower compared to a male target.
>>
>>3447543

>>
>>3447543

>>
I'd vote to Continue Cannonball Practice and ask if Garp has any seastone Cannonballs we can borrow.
>>
I'd personally like to spend at least one of the actions trying to awaken one of our weapons.
>>
>>3447556
And once we get good enough, we'll get a craftsman to weld a big ol' handle onto a cannonball and tie a ton of rope to it.

Two-handed cannonball flail is a go!
>>
>>3447565
We're still like 8/15 for even our closest weapons anon. We aren't even close.
>>
GOOD NEWS

I just remembered you should get THREE actions a day, because Klaus training isn't automatically taking up a slot.

>First action
>Second action

These can be training or socialization, or other stuff. I'm assuming you're avoiding Fireplace unless you specifically say otherwise.

What do people think of something like this for a cannon ball instead of a chain? It would allow it to function as a sorta brass knuckle when Flashman isn't pitching it around. He could use it for boxing or attach it to the opposite end of one of the fans for a sort of kusarigama.
>>
>>3447507
I love the Mysterious Hero vibe more than shirtless, we get to dress up and be dramatic and mysterious. Flashy would love It, It has my vote.
>>
>>3447834
I don't think it has the same charm as just a cannonball.
If a two year timeskip occurs with Flashy training with Garp I wonder how strong he'd be by the end of it compared to timeskip Strawhats.
Conquerer's Haki wen
>>
>>3447834
I know we've got bullshit one piece strength, but I still can't imagine trying to use that thing to punch not throwing us off balance and just being generally unwieldy. And the extra bit seems like it'd probably mess with our throws.

A big part of Conqueror's Haki is personality. It's meant for those with the disposition of a literal king or ruler, the sorts of people who rise up to conquer nations. Examples of people who have Conqueror's:

Luffy
Ace
Whitebeard
Boa Hancock
Shanks
Silvers Rayleigh
Doflamingo
Big Mom
Katakuri
Eustass Kid (RIP)

All of these people have some element of being a natural leader, but it's not common at all - literally one in a million people have it. We've only seen it in so many people because the Grand Line is a magnet for those kinds of personalities. And despite everything he's done so far, I don't really think that Flashman is that kind of a person. He doesn't really have people follow him, nor does he want to be a leader. He just wants to live his best Flashy life.
>>
Regarding the choice of a DevilFruit, I'm ambivalent towards taking one at all but I was thinking that if we do get one we could try for a Mercury Devil Fruit?
Think about it:
>Mercury Sword/Bullets
>Giant waves of mercury suddenly erupting with an armory worth of weapons
>Leap from pool to pool while switching weapons underneath
>Pin and then shoot them

That said, I'm still salty we didn't keep the Magnetic Devil Fruit to have all our weapons orbit around us and weapon surf
>>
... You know, it just now occurred to me how eerily close our whole possible eventual “living weapon” thing is to Big Mom’s whole “put a bit of my soul into this object to give it life”. Huh.
>>
I wonder which members of BW died, they had a lot of devil fruit users amongst their midst, meaning a lot of devil fruits could be going around right now

Let's see, Devil Fruit users in Baroque Works:

Mr. 0, Crocodile - Suna Suna no Mi (Eaten by Kohza)
Miss All Sunday, Nico Robin - Hana Hana no Mi (Alive, with Straw Hats, as it should be)
Mr. 1, Daz Bonez - Supa Supa no Mi
Miss Doublefinger, Zala - Toge Toge no Mi
Mr. 2 Bon Kurei, Bentham - Mane Mane no Mi (Alive)
Mr. 3, Galdino - Doru Doru no Mi
Miss Merry Christmas, Drophy - Mogu Mogu no Mi
Lassoo - Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Dachshund
Mr. 5, Gem - Bomu Bomu no Mi
Miss Valentine, Mikita - Kilo Kilo no Mi

That's ten altogether, with three being accounted for (one eaten, two users still alive). Meaning there are seven users who have an unknown status.

WE’LL FIND OUT

>161, 70 Tashigi v 80, 134 you (includ8g dual-wielding bonuses). Tashigi improving with dual wielding, you lose by a small amount.

You spar with Tashigi by the pale moonlight. Well, no, it’s daytime, but still. She’s still getting used to dual-wielding, not good enough to use a second blade in combat yet, but as a sword-freak, she’s a fast-learner. It’s kindnofmdisturbing how much she can learn just by watching you - even though for this spar, you decide to bring out Jitte-san.

He hasn’t had much fun in a while, after all.

With him in one hand and Ka-tan in the other, Tashigi moves on the offensive, keeping her blades as far out of reach of Jitte-san as possible. Not that you WOULD try to break her precious swords, but a bit of psychological warefare never hurt, right?

Apparently it does - while she doesn’t kick your ass, it’s pretty clear Tashigi comes out on top of this one, faking being worse with dual-wielding than she is, and catching you off-guard with sudden competence.

CURSE YOU, LIEUTENANT JUNIOR GRAAAAAAADE.

At least getting practice with Jitte-san against a dual-wielder is useful.

(Jitte +1!)

>cannonballs, 80+20=100

(Cannonballs +8!)

While Garp doesn’t join you for your important lesson in throwing goddamn cannonballs, you’ve got a good enough grasp to keep practicing by yourself. It’s all in the swing of the hips. And your back. And shoulders. And arms.

Also, all of them hurt.

“So I gotta ask, sir” you say in the evening, having caught Bogart mostly alone on deck. “How have you survived so long?”

“I assume you mean as a Marine, and not the honor of working under Vice-Admiral Garp,” Bogart says, face and tone blank of all emotion.

“Uh. Sure.”

“A lot of aspirin.”

You consider this. “That’s... that’s it?”

“And the knowledge that my sacrifices prevent chaos from befalling the world.”

“... I think you’re the real Hero the Marines, sir.”

“It HAS been suggested,” he agrees. “Was there anything else, Commander?”

Was there? Oh, yeah. “I’ve seen you using that iai stuff against Pinky and Chin in training, and it looks pretty useful. Do you have any tips for that, sir?”

Despite his standard emotionlessness, you could almost see a flicker of surprise in his squinty eyes, before it vanishes. “I do, yes.”

“....”

“.......”

“............. Could you tell me them, please, sir?”

He does, although you’re starting to think all swordsmen are secretly assholes. Wait - you’re a swordsman. Shit.

He’s served under Garp for at least 25 years, he’s incapable of anything other than the briefest and shallowest of emotions.

>cannonballs, 55+28 = 83

(Cannonballs +4! Gains decreasing significantly now!)

The next morning, you start the day by hurling cannonballs, as one does. It’s getting quite a bit easier, in both the throwing and the actual handling of them. You think you may well be developing muscles in places you were previously unaware of.

Maybe you’re growing entirely new muscles.

... This IS the Grand Line, after all...

In any case, you can feel yourself improving in the aim and distance, though you’ll need to work on your body more to get significant improvements. Skill can only take you so far in throwing giant lumps of metal, after all.

>iaaaaaaaaaaaai, 97+33 (general swordsmanship) = 130

(Gained trait Iaidon’t Suck (Low)! - +5 bonus to unsheathing and cutting (and resheathing if necessary) in a flash!)

Taking the tips from Bogart, you decide to put it into action.

Stand.

Breathe.

MOVE-

.... Oh, okay. That was easy, you think, as you watch the poor piece of fruit you hung as a target fall to the deck in two pieces.

“What the fuck...” one of Garp’s infantry mutters. Another pats him on the back.

You shrug, and attach another apple to the post. Gotta git gud, right?

>129 v 135 v 151

Tashigi, Curly and you. Squaring off in defiance of all common sense - Tashigi's swords at close range, your fans at mid-range, and Curly's guns at BULLETS range.

"I have no idea how this is even going to work," Tashigi says, as a massive space is cleared.

"With a lot of running around," you suggest. Curly, while clearly intends to just stand around and shoot at you both, looks smug.

When the moment is decided, the three of you blaze into action. It is, naturally, absolute chaos. Both you and Tashigi are trying to avoid AND close-up on Curly - a wary and temporary truce based on not wanting to go at him alone, one of you attracting his attention while the other tries to angle behind him.

Despite this, Curly's blanks eventually hit close enough to Tashigi that she has to admit she's 'out', which you take prompt advantage of by crouching down and slamming both fans out at Curly's legs as he starts to turn to deal with you.

He pauses, looking down at the chains wrapped securely around his ankles, ones you could easily pull him off-balance with. Then you finger-gun at him.

"You realize, mi-mi-mi, you couldn't have done this is your been fighting me alone?"

"A win is a win," you chide, and finger-gun ever harder.

(General Fitness +1!)

(All right, guys, we're heading to Jaya. That means DISGUISE TIME. You will ONLY be meeting Usopp (of the Strawhat crew, anyway), and will change back into uniform before you do Skypiea. In order for Usopp shenanigans, jitte/fans must be hidden. Pistol, swords and meteor-hammer are fine. SO.)

Also EMERGENCY ACCOUNCEMENT, I've mentioned this a few times before, but it bears repeating. This is the fourth OPBP Quest on the board, I'm allowed a maximum of 5. I'll see about running this thread longer than 1000 comments and hopefully the oldest of these threads will drop off soon, but if we end up with thread 5 on the board and it moves quickly, we might have to take a break for a couple of days or more. I dunno.

It's limited by IP.
Not to punish very active quests but to prevent people spamming a slow board to oblivion with shitposts.

If your IP is dynamic then when posting the thread it should be fine.

Finally, the day comes for arriving at Jaya. You haven't caught up with Smoboss on the way - he's lost the Strawhats (or they've lost him), distracted by thrashing some other randon pirate crew they caught up to. At least he got some stress relief. You can't imagine how bad the poor crew must be getting it...

In any case, the Strawhats MUST have landed at Jaya to reset their Log Pose, and they're most likely to be in Mocktown, which is apparently pirate central.

So while Garp's ship is following their Eternal Pose towards Marineford, and Smoboss is detouring for supplies at a nearby base (you can only imagine how much that's pissing him off), you, Tashigi and Curly are heading ashore.

... You suspect that when Smoboss arrives in a couple of days or so, he's going to arrest every single pirate in town, which simultaneously scares and excites you.

More importantly, being in pirate heaven for a few days means not being a Marine, which means... Disguises.

.... fuck yeah.

"Are you sure it's better than last time?" Tashigi presses a finger carefully against her- no, HIS stubble to check it's dry.

"You look so handsome and manly," you tell 'him', giving a thumbs-up as you pop the lid back on the market pen. "All the lady pirates are gonna swoon over you~!"

Tasharry smiles sweetly at you. "Thank you, Flashman! I'm sure all the male pirates will like your own face, too."

.... You change your thumbs-up into a middle-finger-up.

"How old are you two, again?" Curly's getting his own disguise on, which is totally boring and doesn't involve facial hair. Lame.

"Nineteen," you both say.

"But I'm older," you add.

Tashigi glares at you, folding her arms. "I was born in the morning. Do you even know the exact time of your birth?"

"An hour before you, Lieutenant Junior Grade Tashigi," you answer sagely, having absolutely no idea.

Tashigi kicks you.

"So you're both nine, mi-mi-mi," Curly mutters, packing away his normal clothes. "Now - as, hm, convincing as our disguises are, we all need to be on the same page as regards our backstory. Hopefully no-one will question us, but a few basic facts we can all agree on may be helpful. We must also have our names decided on beforehand."

"That makes perfect sense," agrees Tashigi, because she's a filthy suck-up. "I'll be Shigure."

"That's a woman's name."

She pauses. "Tsurugi. It's unisex, and close enough to my own name I won't be confused."

... That's totally with the kanji for sword. You just know it. "Uh-huh. What about you, Curly? You could use that 'Igaram' nickname people call you."

There's a pause as the others obviously think about what a great idea this is, before Curly says, "Actually, I think I'll go with... Guard."

Boo. Unimaginative. Personally, you'll be...

You set out to see in a pea-green bo- Wait, no, it's a normal brown one, and devoid of Marine symbols. You DO stick up a quick jolly roger, because you find it funny.

"You realize we're only using these disguises for a couple of days... Arthur?" Clearly Tsucarpeti is still bitter over finding out you're older than he- him. As expected of one still so young and immature.

"We must get deep into character," you wisely inform him, tugging your jacket's overlarge collar up. "So deep. So deep we drown in it."

"We really don't have to, mi-mi-mi," Guard assures. He clearly knows nothing about undercover work, so you shoot him a condescending loom. Then you remember you've just covered half your face, and sulk instead.

"Let's check the bounties before we get to land," Tsucarpeti quickly says, grabbing today's paper from where it's slung over a bench. "Just in case we spot someone major there!"

"Really? Apart from the Strawhats, I doubt we're gonna see any big-names there."

"Apparently a pirate by the name of Blackbeard is around this area," Guard muses, as your younger subordinate flicks through the paper. "He was originally one of Whitebeard's men."

You try not to panic. "GOSH, WHITEBEARD, HUH? GOOD THING I'VE NEVER PISSED THAT DUDE OFF, HAHA!"

Guard frowns. "How did you aggravate Whitebeard, mi-mi-mi?"

"HAHA WHAT?"

"Found the Strawhats!" Tsucarpeti cheers, holding up the posters. "Strawhat Luffy, 70,000,000 - Demon Blade Zoro, 25,000,000 - Cheapshot Sanji, 40,000,000 - Thief Witch Nami, 20,000,000 - Sandstorm Kohza, 15,000,000 - there's that massive deer Mink they have as well, although it's only a sketch; Monster Chopper, 10,000,000."

Guard leans in. "And none for the Princess or Carue?"

"None for the hostages, no," Tsucarpeti says, straight-faced.

"Lolonoa's bounty is craaaaap~" you sing, utterly delighted. "Uh, not that I care. Being a fellow pirate and all. Yo-ho-ho."

"Perhaps leave the talking to mi-mi-mi..." Pirate Captain Guard suggests, as the Mocktown docks come into sight.

It's only Admirals that can individually use a Buster Call, isn't it? Multiple Vice Admirals need to meet as a group and decide collectively to declare a Buster Call for it to go through if they want one, if memory serves.
>>
>>3451624
No, admirals just get a golden snail they can press at any time.
They can give it to others to press if they want.
There's no reason it shouldn't be a normal call to confirm.
Like, what if somebody stole one?
Admirals are strong but aren't undefeatable.
>>
>>3451624
The only ones who can unilaterally call a buster call are
>Five Elder Stars
>Commander in Chief of the Marines
>Marine Fleet Admiral
> Three Admirals (Kuzan, Aokiji, Light guy)

Everyone else needs to petition one of them for the ability to be bestowed a golden snail. But yeah the snails can very well be turned on by accident - that's what happened in Enies Lobby. (Spandam successfully petitioned Sengoku to be given a Golden Den Den, and then accidentally activated it while going for his regular Den Den).

>>3451645
>Stole one
Pretty sure the Golden ones are carried on one of the above people at all times, so to steal one you'd either need to mug an admiral / Kong / Sengoku (absolute suicide) or mug one of the Leaders of the World Gov (good luck inflitrating Mariejois)

The only people with enough firepower to take down an Admiral to snatch their den-den are literally the Yonkos / their top commanders, and like hell they're going to be caught dead using the Marines to do their dirtywork.

Ah right, I forgot about him.

But then I'd argue that the five elder farts have the most security surrounding them since they're literally the rulers of the world, so it still would be a hell of a challenge.

Also I'd expect someone would question a Buster call in the heart of the world noble territory, especially since the ones carrying it out answer to the world gov.

You can't destroy a government backed by most of the planet just by killing off all the guys at the top. "All right! Let's go find a bar and start gathering information!" You don't bother keep g your voice down, because it seems like an appropriately piratey thing to do as well.

"Arthur, I think our Captain should make the decisions," Tsucarpeti says pointedly. The pair of you look at Captain Guard.

"Mi-mi-mi... Perhaps we should find a drinking establishment and gather intelligence."

Tashigi nods. "That sounds much better than Arthur's idea, Captain!"

You wonder if shooting her would be the piratey thing to do.

In any case, the three of you venture through the loud, stinking hellscape of CRIMINAL SCUM that is Mocktown, the pirate paradise. The number of bars and pubs are... high. Very high. Despite that, Captain Guard shakes his head at each one after a quick glance at them, before finally pausing in front of one that... looks pretty much like all the others.

"This one will have a good information-broker," he explains.

Tsucarpeti looks at him, impressed. "There's some secret symbol that tells you that?"

He points to the dusty window. "No, but there's a sign rating this establishment four skull-and-crossbones by IntelAdvisor."

"......"

"I really need a drink," you mutter, stalking in ahead of them.

As it turns out, the place isn't too bad. At least it's more of a drinking establishment than a 'barfights every ten minutes' kinda place. You sit yourself at the bar, followed by Captain Guard, while Tsucarpeti gets three steps before being accosted by a flirtatious barmaid fluttering her eyelashes at the confused not-a-pirate.

Clearly, your artistry skills are magnificent. If the Marine thing doesn't work out, you have a bright future as a make-up artist.

"What'll it be, gents," the barman grunts, eyeing you with dull boredom.

"Information, and your wine menu, my good sir," your Captain politely requests.

You eagerly jump in. "And a

"- Pink Flamingo!"

"Comin' right up," the bartender drawls, plunking an ornate glass down on the bar before passing your new Captain an elegant wine menu (with rumpled tassel along the spine). Guard seems delighted with the selection, judging by the eagerness with which he looks through.

"So which crew are you guys with?" The bartender doesn't slow down in whipping through the ingredients for your cocktail.

"We're the Mi-Mi-Mi Pirates," you proudly announce, motioning at Cu- Guard. "Led by Captain Guard!"

"Mi-Mi-Mi Pirates? What's up with that name?"

Guard shakes his head, still looking through the menu. "I have no idea why my crew insisted on it, mi-mi-mi."

"...... right." He finishes your drink just as Tsucarpeti manages to drag himself over, looking panicked, and throw himself on the stool next to you. 'He' has lipstick smeared across his cheek.

"Anything else I can get you guys before we sort out the information? " The bartender's cleaning away the bottles from your Flamingo now, still looking bored. "Children's menu, maybe?"

Wow! "You have a kid's menu?!"

"Arthur, no!" Tsucarpeti slaps you around the hat. "Please ignore him. He ate the Stupid Stupid Fruit."

"Yeah, well, your momma ate the Fat Fa-"

"A glass of the single-harvest Chateau Soixeme 1312, if you please," Guard butts in, eyes dead. "I quite desperately need it."

"... Want the whole bottle instead?"

"Dear sand-gods, yes."

He shrugs, and rattles off a list of names, some of which you know. Big-Time-Rookie Bellamy the Hyena and his crew are making a name for themselves, and Roshio the Executioner has just arrived. That Blackbeard guy is apparently hanging around, though his crew set out to sea now and then, Jewellery Bonney only just left, and... the Strawhats arrived late last night.

You let Cu- Captain Guard keep asking questions about Mocktown and its scummy population of scum, while you and Tsucarpeti sip your cocktail and beer respectively.

The place isn’t empty, but it’s not necessarily busy, either - the clientele are more interested in actually drinking than conversation, which is why the door opening grabs everyone’s attention easily.

As with your entry, everyone’s faces turn to check the newcomer, hands carefully in reach of their weapons, before they relax and turn away once more.

Except for you and Guard.

Your Captain hesitates for a second at the sight of her, before going casually back to his questions - as for you, you try to sink deeper within your snazzy blue coat, looking as anonymous as possible.

It’s a little bit worrying. And relieving! But also worrying. Because... what the fuck?

She finishes casting a wary eye around the rest of the place, and you quickly look back to your drink as her gaze sweeps across the three of your backs.

Don’t look at you. Don’t look at you. Don’t look at you.

“Rough day?”

Guard glances at you, almost panicked - yeah, he definitely recognizes her - and Tsucarpeti looks mildly confused but says nothing. She doesn’t look surprised; it’s almost like she expects you to strike up conversations with random criminals while you’re undercover. Is that rude? It’s probably rude.

Thursday scoffs, as the whiskey is placed in front of her. “Rough fortnight,” she bites out, before slamming the entire damn glass back in one go. Tsucarpeti looks awed.

“Cowardly shit ran off while I was still high on pain meds!” She slams a fist down on the bartop, rattling glasses. Guard steadies his wine glass, before taking a delicate sip. “But I’ll find that little shit, boy-o, see if I don’t... hunt ‘im down and see how he likes me practicing some surgery on HIM, ah?”

She grins toothily, one finger running along the fan folded at her hip.

Nah that's how we get to become her perminant #1 shitheel, duping her into coming aboard a marine ship + working with marines + working with the main reason why all her money is gone.

We gotta approach her as Harry Flashman to have any hope at succeeding.

Not to spoiler because it isn’t really important, but while the doctor in question was originally one of Wapol’s, doctor-dude skipped out after the Strawhats kicked his ass. So she didn’t actually head to Drum, the Billions who rescued her met him while they were running from Renaisse.

“Really?” Mr Bartender complains. “They haven’t even paid me yet.” Ah, Mocktown.

“You can take your own share,” Thursday allows, rolling her eyes.

You and Tsucarpeti look at each other, blank-faced, while Guard closes his eyes and continues to enjoy his wine.

“You’re right. Dinner as well?”

Guard chokes on his wine.

Tsucarpeti slumps so far down he nearly slithers off the stool.

Thursday just stares, fan still raised. “Dinner. You’re offering dinner, boy-o?”

You nod cheerily, though your mouth’s still hidden behind your collar. “Sure! We haven’t eaten yet, have we, guys?”

Guard and Tsucarpeti turn to glare at you between them.

“See? Hey, bardude, anywhere you’d recommend to eat?”

“Looks like you guys have already got the ‘show’ part figured out, but if you want any more entertainment, the Salty Crab Seafood Cafe has good food and music,” Mr Bartender says, eyeing your little group of buddies. “Just try not to trash the place if you end up killing each other, I like to eat there myself.”

You resist the urge to give him finger-guns, because you’re a PIRATE and and thus unworthy of performing them right now. “Thanks, Cocktail Guy!”

“... Just pay me.”

Guard pours another glass from his bottle. “Why am I even Captain...?”

“It’s a mi-mi-mystery,” you agree.

Thursday stares between you all, confused, before coming to a decision. “If they’re paying, I’m having another whiskey, boy-o. Actually, make it two.”

Once you’ve all finished your bottle of wine/cocktail/mug of beer/multiple damn whiskeys respectively, and paid Mr Cocktail-Dude (who makes a mean Pink Flamingo, you’ll have to make sure Smoboss doesn’t trash this place when he inevitably rages across the island in pirate-punching fury), the next option is clear.

FOOD.

The four of you stride along the (vermin-ridden) streets of Mocktown, following the directions of Mr Cocktail, Tsucarpeti casting constant glares at you, Guard with his eyes devoid of life, and Thursday swaggering along with a smug smirk of smug smugness, while clearly sizing up most of the pirates you pass.

You suspect she’s matching bounties to each one.

The Salty Crab seems to be clean, not that you can vouch for the kitchen; but the clientele also seem to be more decently dressed (if still pirates) than the other eating places you’ve passed. Not exactly ‘Captains only’, but clearly not for the common mook who’s just looking for a slab of meat washed down with rum.

“Amazing,” Tsucarpeti mutters, keeping his voice low. “We might not actually get food-poisoning here.”

Thursday snorts. “A restaurant like that wouldn’t last long here, boy-o. As soon as they’d recovered, they’d just come back and kill the chef.”

... Oh, yeah. Pirates.

Thursday struts in first, followed by Tsucarpeti, while Guard grabs you before you can enter.

He leans in, whispering urgently, “That woman is Miss Thursday!”

Last update of the day, if you somehow missed it, I’m out of phone data and (ab)using public WiFi.

Will try to update earlier than usual tomorrow, phone data should be back to normal on 26th, but short(er) sessions until then. Pray for me.

Quick question, because I’m curious, anons, what was your favourite moment of the quest so far? Any particular incidents/lines/crits stand out to you? I’d like to know which parts/styles/relationships/whatever people prefer to read about. (No, Zoro Interlude is not an answer.)

Any moments where we kicked canon in the nuts: Sanji having a higher bounty than Zoro, Cheapshot Sanji, killing Kidd, completely screwing up Alabasta

Also the dice driven narrative of Flashman's haki awakening / him discovering he's a weapons prodigy / his weapons awakening - you really ran with those bullshit rolls.

But the best moment so far has to be nat 100ing Ace and the fallout of it.

It's quintessentially one piece in a way that's hard to explain but which worked perfectly.
>>
>>3454147
I really like the relationships that are being built up, and the characters themselves as well. Fighting is all well and good, but the real victory feels like the friendships Flashman makes along the way. That being said, the crits are continually hilarious and suitably One Piece.
Overall I like Flashman's generally helpful nature, even if he can be a bit bratty at times. I hope both of those aspects stick around.
Right now I'm partial to this encounter with Miss Thursday because she's a bit of a flake. I'd like to know more about why that is, even if it's as simple as she just doesn't want to get caught. Otherwise, Fop seems like he could be a lot of fun as he adjusts to the outside world, and his officer exam of course.

Like, dear god would you be rich if you found that place, you could basically buy the entire world government and still have enough left over to last ten lifetimes!....but also the companionship, I like word play.

Fuck. Technically Miss Thursday was first mother like figure, that would be correct. Most importantly she teached us how to use weapons, and this count like being part of family.

“Poison is a coward’s weapon! It’s utterly dishonorable!” Tsucarpeti adds her own two beri, swordsman’s pride rising.

>Yeah, listen to Tsucarpeti! Just drugging them to get them outta the way is fine!

>One. Drugs are harder to track down and easier to buy.
>Two. Lethality is a problem. You kill them they come back after you for killing. And they are part of big crew.
>Three. If you poison them there's a chance that we kill people from different crews they will want revenge. If we drug the most likely they will let it go. We don't want to shooting ourselves in the leg.
>>
>>3456005
>Think of it this way. If you let them live they will probably get a new captain with new bounty, ripe to be collected another time.
>Just drugging them to get them outta the way would do the job just fine.

This whole honor talk may hit a bit close considering what Flashy did to her.
Its hard to be honorable when dealing with criminals and expecting them to be honorable right back. Way too risky, sadly.
>>
>dishonour before death

“I dunno, using dishonorable tactics against our fellow dishonorable pirates sounds pretty okay to me. I mean, the point is staying alive, not scoring honor-points.”

Moku-moku jabs a finger a finger at you. “Right. ‘Sides, I can turn in even more bounties that way. You’re not bad at this mass salaughter thing, boy-o!”

“....... Thanks?” DON’T FINGER-GUN.

“Haven’t heard much from you -“ she adds, turning to face Guard, “- curly.”

HOLY SHIT

SHE’S ON TO YOU ALL

“HAHAHA, what a great nickname!” Tsucarpeti abruptly butts in. “Because he has curly hair! And not because his name is curly! Isn’t that right, Arthur?!”

Your hand shifts away from Ka-tan. “Ha! Yes, that’s absolutely right!” Shit, what were the chances she’d accidentally suggest Curly’s real name for his nickname?!

Guard’s gaze flicks towards her, before looking away. “I have nothing to add, mi-mi-mi...”

She frowns. “Wait... where have I heard that before?”

Huh? “You mean our crew name?”

“Nah... well, yeah, but as a tic... who was it...”

Well, it can’t have been Curly. After all, it’s not like he’d have ever met Miss Thursday before, right?

She stares at you.

Tsucarpeti stares at you.

Guard stares at you.

Your deep-sea puff-finned haddock stares at you, which is impressive considering it’s dead and the kitchen removed its head.

You blink, still staring at Moku-moku. “Well?”

“Not really,” Moku-moku finally answers, grimacing as she turns back to her lobster. You flash a smug wink at Tsucarpeti, who looks relieved . You’re not sure whether it’s because the bounty hunter was distracted, or because it means you’re not a moron who thinks a tic is a food.

It appears that Moku-moku DEFINITELY thinks you’re a moron, though.

The rest of the meal passes... somewhat awkwardly but deliciously. You’ve also learned a great deal about how to eat while keeping your lower face covered.

You truly are a man of mystery.

“Well, thanks for the meal, dumbasses,” Moku-moku says, stretching out as the last of the plates are cleared away. “I might just give that Bellamy trash a go, ah? And by that, I mean Im gonna murder the shit outta him.”

“Have fun!” You’re always glad to hear about pirates dying!

Moku-moku nods at the three of you - smugly, naturally - downs the last of her drink, and saunters off. Also smugly.

...

“Well,” you say brightly. “I think that went well!”

Guard and Tsurugi slowly turn to glare at you.

“What?” You look between them. “I’m setting criminal against criminal! It’s cunning!”

Tsucarpeti opens his mouth, hesitates, and then slumps. “That’s... useful, I suppose. Ca- our old Captain also said it’s best to let enemies kill each other off.”

“Valid tactics,” Guard sighs. “Although I refuse to believe that was your plan from the beginning.”

You try to look suitably mysterious.

“... Definitely spur of the moment,” Tsucarpeti agrees.

Ugh. So rude. You can’t help but feel aggravated, which is, y’know, totally well-deserved and all. You stopped a bar fight before it even started! You saved your anonymity! You possibly sort-of took down Bellamy the Hyena by proxy, maybe! And all it cost you was a few whiskeys and a good meal!

“I’m going to arrange a room for us tonight, mi-mi-mi,” your brave and noble Captain sighs. “You two wait - in that bar over there. I’ll be back within two hours.”

“Actually, I wanted to go have a look at the local weapons-shops,” Tspaghettios admits.

You try to look harmless. “I’ll do my best not to cause any trouble!”

They cast you concerned, suspicious looks. “... Fine.”

Man, it’s like you’re some kind of trouble magnet. Rude.

The three of you splitting up, you heft your duffle bag of Mystery Weaponry, tug your cap down, and saunter into the Drunken Albatross pub, which is significantly busier than the first bar you were in. And dirtier. And louder.

With a quick look around, you decide to plonk yourself at the bar next to a guy who looks pretty harmless, judging from how he’s hunched in on himself.

“Pink Flamingo, please, my good barlady,” you tell the good barlady, who glares at you, but does as asked.

The guy next to you peeks over slightly as she starts whipping up a heavenly, fruity, pink concoction of deliciousness and alcohol. You admire the artistry as well, ignoring a small bar fight breaking out in the corner. It sure looks more appetizing than the curly-haired dude’s mug of rum!

“A cocktail? Really?” He mutters it in amazement, as if talking to himself.

“And the finest of them all!” You point at the pink ambrosia, as the subtle hues of light pink, electric pink and WOW THAT’S PINK shimmer in a haze of perfection. “Do you know how much alcohol is in that? Because I don’t! All of know is that it’s a LOT, and has fruity deliciousness to go along with It! How can you possibly beat that?!”

“... You... really like that drink, huh?” The guy - whoah, that’s a long nose - looks upon your passionate defence with mild confusion.

You stare him right in the eyes. “The drink... was brought to Earth by angels.”

“This angel’s charging twenty beri,” the bartender grunts, shoving it over. You happily pay her, taking the precious treasure all for yourself.

“You’re the only guy in here who hasn’t got a beer or rum,” Nose says, eyes scanning the bar.

You shrug. “So? Not my problem if everyone’s too dumb to appreciate a real drink. A few of these’ll get someone hammered waaaay faster than beer.”

Nose looks at his drink. “Really?”

“Higher alcohol content,” bar-lady butts in bluntly. She isn’t really part of the conversation, but you appreciate anyone who backs up your excellent taste.

“Huh.” Nose’s eyes flicker around, before he straightens up slightly. “You know what? Get me one of those pink things as well!”

You raise your own Flamingo in a proud toast as he finishes the dregs of his rum.

“Ah - I’m Captain Usopp, of the Usopp Pirates! And... uh...” He slumps again. Even lower than before. “We’re... lookinferthskisland.”

Also, holy shit, this dude does NOT look like a Captain. Is he just starting out? Attracted to a life of glamor and riches? You’re pretty sure you’ve never heard of his crew, at least...

“You’re looking for what?” You lean in closer, curious, as the glorious Angel of Alcohol hands over his own sweet nectar,

“We’re. Um.” He takes a deep breath, before grabbing the drink and sucking down a mouthful. “Hey, yeah, that IS good! Soooo... we’re... looking for... a sky island.

He eyes you, as if making sure you’re not about to bust out laughing, but apparently you have reassuring eyes. Or you’re just that harmless. “Yeah, apparently there’s one nearby. Our Log Pose is pointing to it, but we haven’t figured how to get up there, yet...” He sighs, before taking another sip.

Sky. Island. An island... in the sky. Admittedly, you’re from right near the end of Paradise, but even so, that sounds... kind of insane. “Wouldn’t it... sink? And by sink, I mean, fall really quickly?”

Captain Usopp looks despondent. “It’s definitely real! It’s just - getting there is the issue. Especially before the Log Pose resets - we’ve got most of the crew out manning the ship, to make sure it doesn’t lock on to Jaya’s magnetic field.”

“- the Strawhat crew are real vicious.”

Usopp cough-chokes around his straw (also pink). “Wha-wha-what?! The Strawhats?!”

Your eyes narrow as you nod. “Yup. They’re around here somewhere, too. Obviously I’ve never met them myself, but I hear they’re the most ruthless, dishonorable monsters that ever sailed the Line. They take hostages, steal even the most sentimental items, and even helped take down a Shichibukai. They’re brutal and cunning beyond anything you could imagine.”

“REALLY,” squeaks Usopp, who obviously grasps just how utterly terrifying and generally scumbag-ish thee crew is. “THEY- ahem, they’re th-that bad? And scary?”

Man, this is a topic you could go on about for days. “Right! You’ve read the news, right? They -“ Oh, wait, the World Government’s claiming Crocodile’s death was all Fireplace, and not Strawhat. Well, still, you can mention the ‘public version’ of stuff. “- they kidnapped a Princess! Who knows what terrible things they’re doing to that poor woman!”

“Er.”

“And they have a huge, vicious deer mink with massive arms-“

“A what?”

Oh, right, most people here likely haven’t seen a mink. “Uh, think like an animal person. Most of them live waaaay further up the Grand Line, in the New World. They’re all incredibly skilful, dangerous fighters, and the Strawhats already have one as a crewmate! And their first mate, the swordsman...”

I am rewatching the older one piece episodes and I have to ask. How did Captain Morgan (Axehand) ever become a captain. Fighting strength wise, he is the weakest captain ever, and gets one-shotted by early zoro, before he gets any of his real sword training.
>>
>>3458657
You're thinking of it the wrong way. It's not that Captain Morgan is weak, it's that Luffy and Zoro are really strong. Luffy 1v1s both Captain Buggy, a crewman on the original Pirate King's ship, and Arlong, a Fishman Captain who ruled with an iron fist for 10 years. They are just too strong.
>>
>>3458657
East Blue is the weakest sea for a reason.
>>
>>3458657
IIRC, he got a promotion for capturing Black Cat Kuro, and subsequently had a massive personality change and stopped improving.
If that name seems familiar, it should: he was free and clear the whole time, working as a butler. Morgan got hypnotised by Django into handing over a random schmuck in his place.
>>
>>3458736
It's actually because everyone encountered was inexplicably too weak before the timeskip.
Luffy should never have been able to beat Crocodile.
Crocodile should never have been a Shichibukai.
Enies Lobby should have ended far worse for the Strawhats too.
It's silly that they managed to pull what they did off.
Arlong should be near Jinbe level but isn't, for no reason.

I THINK ‘tell me more about this incredibly handsome and talented marine’ won, will start writing in about ten minutes unless someone wants to dispute it.

I’m gonna be honest, I totally skimmed the votes and went ‘yup, looks right’.

>>3458657
Canon to this quest but not to actual OP canon is that it’s easier to get a promotion in the Blues because your opponents are going to be weaker anyway, and the Marines still need a good amount of officers over there.

You can’t put a Lieutenant in charge of an entire base, but all your strong guys are over in the Grand Line? Promote the Lt. to a Commander as long as they know their theory and can kick a reasonable amount of ass.

Basically, an officer in the Blues is really one or two ranks lower in combat capability than a Paradise Officer. Officially they’re the same rank/seniority/whatever, but every Grand Line Marine and most Blues officers know it.

Smoker is basically one of the few exceptions to this, because he SHOULD have been on the Line (being a Logia and also a competent, intelligent professional), but he got stuck at Loguetown due to pissing everyone off and refusing to play politics. Also because no-one liked the second-hand smoke.
>>
>gosh this marine sure sounds handsome

“Really?” OHOHOHOHO~! “Tell me more about him.”

Captain Usopp fixes you with an intense look as he turns on the stool to face you properly. “He’s unbelievably strong and fast - like some ambush predator, where you think you’re free and clear, and then BAM - he comes straight outta nowhere and crushes you!”

You nod eagerly.

“He’s got these swords that are masterwork weapons, and he’s an expert with all of them. He can even cut through metal! Even other swords! During a fight!”

“Wowwwww!” You widen your eyes in awe. “He sounds badass...”

“He is!” Usopp takes advantage of the pause to order another drink, and you do the same. “And he’s like a rabid dog - he chased the Strawhats right from East Blue to Alabasta! Who even does that?!”

“Who indeed,” you agree solemnly.

“And he’s smart as well as strong! A master tacticians who lured him enemies into exposing themselves before he strikes! He keeps seastone on him to capture Devil Fruit users, and he’ll use the sneakiest, most underhanded tricks to score a win! Apparently he kicked some pirate in the dick back at Loguetown!”

“Oh yeah, I hear that was Roronoa Zoro.”

Usopp pauses. “Wait, what?”

“He kicked Roronoa in the dick. I mean, that’s what I heard. From a friend who was helping attack the Loguetown Marine Base.” You take a sip of your cocktail. “Didn’t you know?”

“Noooooooooo,” coos Usopp, a gleeful grin spreading across his face. “But thanks for telling me! That’s, uh, an interesting fact.”

You shrug. “That’s why every guy should wear a cup.”

“I’m gonna get one as soon as I can,” Usopp fervently agrees, still looking thrilled. Man, this dude really hates Roronoa, huh? You really hope Usopp gives up on the piracy thing, he’s too good for that life.

“So back to that Marine...” you lead.

“Oh? Oh, yeah! Deeeefinitely avoid Ensign Flashman. Seriously, he’ll definitely be, like... an Admiral one day. Total demon.”

“I can assure you, if I see Ensign Flashman coming at me, I’ll run like hell,” you promise, entirely honestly. If you see a demoted version of yourself coming at you, there’s clearly some messed-up stuff going on that you want zero part of.

The bond between you formed of a mutual appreciation for how much of a badass Harry ‘never met a weapon he couldn’t master’ Flashman is, the pair of you continue your drinks in comfortable silence.

Until an idiot appears.

“The fuck is that pussy shit?!”

He’s a pirate. You could tell that even outside of Jaya, because unlike Captain Usopp (who apparently has enough self-confidence that he doesn’t need to flounce around in an outfit that scream she ‘PIRATE CAPTAIN HERE’), this moron is decked out in the full regalia, from the sweeping red coat, to the crossed-over bandoliers, right down to the most cliché boots you could imagaine.

Also, he looks like he hasn’t washed in at least a few days. Understandable, considering most pirate ships don’t have the water filtration systems of Marine ones, but still. Go to an inn and use a shower before you go drinking, asshat. How rude.

Oh, right. He’s busy insulting yours and Usopp’s drinks. Usopp seems a little more affected than you, by the way he’s flinching down, looking nervous at the massive flintlocks and knife the guy’s got hanging off him.

“- thought this was a bar for real men,” he blathers, grinning savagely, obviously itching for a fight, or possibly just from fleas. It could be either. “How ‘bout you girls get back to work down an alley, and-“

>Zone out and continue enjoying your Flamingo. Mmmm, fruity.

Maaaaaan, this guy just doesn’t shut up. Oh, wait! You can fix that!

Taking another sip of your sweet nectar of the gods, you quickdraw Pistol-chan and shoot him in the gut. Delicious. You’re amazed a place like this even HAS fresh strawberries.

The bar falls silent for a moment at both the bang and the screaming fall of Tasteless-Pirate, before starting up again once they decide an all-out fight isn’t happening.

Bar-Queen peers over the counter. “You’re gonna need to pay for the cleaning.”

You glance around. “This place gets... cleaned?”

“Nah, but I had to try,” she shrugs, and goes back back to serving drinks.

“Y-y-y-you j-j-just SHOT HIM!!”

Ah. It seems Captain Usopp really isn’t cut out for the pirate life. (Unlike Arthur, yaaaar.) Ignoring the whining and slowing writhing of the dying pirate on the floor, you shrug.

“A guy’s gotta defend what he loves, right?”

“I guess...?” Usopp doesn’t sound entirely certain of that. Fortunately, with Dumbass McDumbass’s moaning coming to a halt as he succumbs to JUSTICE, you don’t have to speak loudly.

“If you can’t stand up for what you believe in,” you announce, full of PASSION and ALCOHOL and PINK (and blood, unlike the dead dude), “you might as well live a quiet life on some island somewhere! And hey, even there, you’ll still have things you love. There’s a time in everyone’s life where something or someone they care about is threatened! And for people like us, it’s way more than just once... it could happen any time. Any place. You could be sitting in a bar, enjoying your drink, and some asshole could come up and end up spilling it everywhere in a bar fight. And wouldn’t that be partly your own fault for not taking measures to defend it?!”

“Uh... no?”

“Right! It’s - Wait, what?”

“I mean, it’s a good drink, I’m not denying that,” Usopp adds quickly, waving his hand apologetically, “but, um, he didn’t... actually... threaten the drink?”

Damn. This guy’s smart. You can see why he’s a Captain. Also, you’re pretty sure you’re a little drunk. Hm. Frowning down at the dregs of your... what, fourth Flamingo today? Fifth? Eh, whatever. You order another. “No, he didn’t... but are you honestly gonna tell he wasn’t aiming for a fight?”

Usopp hunches. “Well... no. He was aiming for one, yeah.”

You nod. “I like this drink. I like having a nice, quiet evening, and good conversation. If some guy comes along and picks a fight for no reason, trying to tear all that from me... what should I do?”

“Um.” Usopp chews on his lip, clearly thinking, “I... kind of get your point? I mean, with this being Mocktown... and him being a pirate...”

“Exactly. I haven’t got my crew here. I don’t have a bounty. I look like an easy mark. Sometimes the best way to head off a load of problems is to look like an even bigger one, right off the bat. Look like trouble, so people don’t start it with you, yeah?”

“I get it! That’s a good idea. I mean, I mostly just try to hi- uh, get to the high ground! Being a sniper and all! But if I made myself LOOK dangerous, rather than just preparing for when it happens...” He looks like he’s talking to himself now, getting excited.

(1/2)
>>
>>3459715
Speaking of marine fored, can someone tell me why not a single of the thousand mooks tried to snipe the slow moving half dead grandpa, Wb, when it became apparent he could be injuired?
>>
You nod wisely, as if this was totally what you meant, and not just because you don’t want to admit you find a cocktail worth shooting a guy for. ‘He was a pirate’ doesn’t really cut it when you’re also a pirate. “Right, right... you understand... uh-huh...”

“Looking big and dangerous isngood,” Usopp mutters, “but being insignificant is good too... hmm...”

You have no idea what’s going on, but nod sagely while you drink. “Totally... totally... good thoughts...”

“I gotta be the kind of man who can protect everything!”

“Maybe not, like... everything? Just... most stuff...”

“A brave warrior of the sea, who no-one picks a fight with!”

“That doesn’t make... wooo, never mind. Hey, cool spinny effect on the bar. Niiiiice.”

“A man so terrifying, people are too scared to even try anything!”

“G’job... yuuuuuppppp...”

“A man- uh, you okay?”

You blink at him, eyelids weirdly heavy. Why is he at such a stupid angle? Ha. Silly guy. “Faaaaaaantastic~”

“... How many of those have you had?”

You consider this. “Yes.”

“Right.” He sighs, reaching up to run a hand through his hair. Hee, fluffy. “Do you have a room somewhere? Or a ship?”

“My ship,” you whisper, enjoying the pretty lamps flickering, “is gone.” When will Smoboss coooooome? You want to get back aboooooard dammit....

“G-gone?! You mean, like...?”

“Y-yeah,” you mumble, bereft and alone. “There was... Garp... and...”

You feel Usopp’s hand clasp your shoulder.

“I’m so sorry...” he whispers. What a nice guy.
