"My lord, today really has gone to shit."

You really couldn't agree more. One moment you're being fitted for a suit for the next masquerade dance, and the next your castle is suddenly besieged by assassins and ne'er-do-wells. As you raced for the secret passages, the halls themselves shook from an explosion, bits of ceiling shaking loose and falling harmlessly. Did your parents make it out? The staff? How could this have happened?

Your brain is going a mile a minute, each new worry superseding the last- but you've got to focus. There has to be a clue to what started this all- think back to your first lessons of the day, the details of your morning:

>You started the day with your studies; your faithful personal aid, Sen, going over the intricacies of economic policy with you.
>Etiquette lessons, bright and early with your sister, the princess. She may seem the prim and proper type to the public, but the two of you have been in a constant war of one-upmanship since birth. Typical sibling stuff.
>Physical training. You were surprised to find the dueling arena occupied by a visiting orcish dignitary- a warlord's daughter, apparently. It certainly was a challenging morning work out.
>Political theory, reading over classical tomes as one of the castle's handmaidens was bringing tea.
>You gave your entourage the slip, sneaking in a ride on your faithful steed. It was a fun diversion, even if you got an earful afterwards.

"Sen, language!" Cherise hisses, as the three of you stop behind a corner. You want to tell her now is not the time, but Sen holds up a hand.

"Nobody in the hall- we're clear, my lieges."

You all scurry around the corner, and Sen starts searching for the mechanism.

"Really? We're running for our lives and you're worried about foul language, sister?"

Cherise frowns, and of course does so in a way that makes her look demure and dignified. Despite your shared blood, the only thing the two of you ever seemed to have in common was height- your blonde, broad features contrasting sharply against her dark haired, skinny frame.

"Just because we're evacuating doesn't mean we have to be savage about it."

You roll your eyes. A 'clunk' sounds behind you, and you turn to see Sen stepping away from a bit of wall sliding out to reveal a secret passage. The scent of stale air wafts around you as you all step in, and the wall closes back up.

It's dark for only a moment, before Sen and Cherise both summon forth a wisp of light from the aether.

>That's the real reason you pick on her so much- you never really had the patience for magecraft, even in spite of Sen's own tutoring, and you might be jealous (though you'd never admit it.) At least you were handy with most weapons you could get your hands on.
>While it may not be the focus of your studies, you're no slouch when it comes to magecraft. You trace up a sigil for 'light' and lead the way, making extra sure that your light is bigger than your sister's.

Your hand goes to the hilt of your saber- yes, it's still there, that's reassuring.

"I recognized a few of those men from the barracks," Sen said, frowning, "I think this must be a coup of some sort."

"It's the vizier," You and your sister say at nearly the same time, before shooting each other an irritated glance. Cherise continues.

"The man hides it well, but he's never been happy with Father's alliance with the Forlaquen Principalities. Marrying an elf like Mother was a major blow to the humanity first movements back in 927."

You raise an eyebrow at her, "You've got a lot of free time, it seems."

She shoots you a mischievous grin, "A lady must always be in the know~."

After a brief moment, however, her grin falters, and her brow knits together in worry.

"Mother and Father... they're gonna be okay, right?"

>>3468331
>>3468428

"We just have to make it to the rendezvous point outside the castle- by the time the vizier realizes we've gone down river towards Forlaque, it'll be too late for them to catch us, and we can mount a counterattack."

"Well, at least we'll have some beautiful scenery to inspire us while we plot." Sen mutters. The forests of Forlaque WOULD be in bloom around this time of year- finest carpentry wood in the realms, to your knowledge. The trade of Forlaquen lumber has done wonders for both architectural evolution and economic growth in Yoriel.

Your blade is out and you're ramming full speed ahead before anyone can say "Roll for Initiative." As you speed around the bend, voices finally reach your ears.

"-Nyet, nyet! They are not so tough! You are being of too worried, we are never of being defeated-"

You're practically on top of the orcish woman before steel clashes against steel- she's visibly shook by your surprise attack, if she had been even a little bit slower it would have been the end for her.

It only takes you a couple seconds afterwards to realize "Wait, the vizier wouldn't hire on orcs," and barely even half that to realize, "Oh shit she's the visiting dignitary," and immediately back off, sheathing your sword. The orc's long, single edged blade is still half-drawn defensively in front of her, and you recognize one of the maids cowering behind her.

"M-my liege!?"

The orc looks from the maid, to you, and back again, before nodding gruffly and sheathing her sword.

"I see you are of knowing orc way to be saying hello," She says, looking you up and down. If that was an orcish greeting, you're pretty sure it was a fairly forward one. A moment later, your own party has caught up to you.

"What the hell do you think you're doing?!" Sen growls, before noticing the new arrivals.

"Scouting ahead," You remark, dryly.

"Hundira Rex," Cherise crosses her right arm across to the shoulder, nodding her head. Hundira returns the gesture.

"I am sorry we are to be meeting like this," She says, "Unless this is a trap."

"No traps, at least not from our end," Cherise grimaces, "Seems my father's royal adviser grew tired of not being able to call the shots."

"Ah, you have been betrayed!"

"Beg pardon."

You all turn to the maid accompanying Hundira- a slight figure you recognize from helping Cherise's personal retinue many times before. She flushes at the sudden attention.

"Um- so, the docks are swarming with soldiers- that's where we were coming from..."

"And where we were trying to get to," Sen sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. Well, it seems your escape plan is royally fucked.

"Seems our escape plan is royally fucked."

Couldn't have said it better yourself, Sen.

"We should fight our way out! We are of a much better match, now!" Hundira said, fist gripping the hilt of her sword.

"That's suicide, we need to find an alternate passage," Sen said, tracing some runes in the air to bring up a map of the castle. Cherise fidgets for a moment, before grabbing you by the arm and whispering.

"I- well, let's just say, hypothetically I had an alternate way out."

You cock an eyebrow at her.

"Just don't ask any questions and do NOT tell mother and father about it, okay?"

Well, you're certainly not hurting for options.

You jog back over to the group, hand on your sword and a glint in your eye.

"I think Hundira's got a good point- we've got a small but capable band here. If we can secure even one boat, we'll be able to escape."

"Are you serious?" Sen gives you a critical look, "My liege, you're capable enough with a sword-"

"Your Prince is more than capable," Hundira cuts in, "Not many men can be catching an orc off her guard."

"Be that as it may, we're talking- at maximium- TWO swordsmen versus how many trained guards?" Sen looks towards the maid.

"Uh- I mean, I didn't really stick around to count them but-"

"A lot, then," Sen frowned, "Roark, this is an idiotic plan. Even if we made it through ourselves, those soldiers must have already captured or killed the sailors and I know for certain you've never piloted a boat in your- do I hear ominous chanting?"

You don't have much time to draw Sen's attention back, as you all start to look towards Cherise and the passageway just... stretches out. There's a strange tugging sensation from the pit of your stomach, and the light from the runes bends and twists around you all. You think you hear your sister shout "Hold on!" but you're unsure what to hold on TO. Up and down lose all meaning as swirls of purple and seafoam creep at the edge of your vision and-

Everything slams into a standstill, you drop to the grass and promptly vomit.

You definitely do both of those in one of those orders. Takes a couple seconds for the taste of ink to leave your tongue and for your vision to stop swimming, but you soon take in your surroundings- these woods are definitely familiar to you, and looking east you can see your castle towering above the capital city in the near distance. So, you haven't traveled far, at least. You sheathe your sword again- no threats nearby, near as you can tell.

(Oh, no no- not this early, of course)

You brush off Sen's question, instead going over the maid- who's still busy trying to hold on to her lunch.

Alright, time to play it cool. You're a prince, she works at the castle. You've definitely read a few novels on the subject. Just be polite- be charming. You take a knee next to her, and offer your hand.

"Are you quite alright, miss?"

Oh yeah. You can feel the sunlight glistening off you as she nervously takes your hand. You're not sure if her face is normally just that red or if it's your royal charms, but you're gonna go ahead and chalk it up to your royal charms. You steady her as you help her up- she's rather short, and very cute.

"I'm afraid I didn't catch your name earlier," You say, and the maid averts her eyes. God, she is a bit of a wallflower, isn't she?

"It's... Kalina, my liege."

"Just call me Roark- or Prince Roark, if you must. We're all in the same boat here- well, hypothetically, since SOMEONE didn't want to go to the docks," You say, grinning at Sen. He makes a rude gesture in your direction, but remains on the ground.

The man just grunts, hands over his eyes, before slowing scooting up into a sitting position.

"It's like someone's turned my eyes inside out, just give me a moment for pity's sake."

You leave your friend be for now. The vision stuff was probably worse for him, what with already terrible eyesight. Turning back to Kalina, you start to prod.

"So, what was your position in the castle, exactly? Anything that might help us sneak back into the city and find the King and Queen?"

She clears her throat, "Well, I mean- I was mostly used where I was need, my- Prince Roark. Your sister favored me as a lady in waiting, but I was never in one particular person's personal service for too long."

She looks from you, to your sister, and back again, "It's not much, but I've managed to make a few contacts within the higher houses in the castle. That's why my father sent me to capital."

"A smart move," Sen says, finally making his way over, "Good way to move up in favor."

"Certainly worked for you," You said, grinning and clapping a hand on his back. He winces, but shoots you pained smile.

"Quite."

"So, you know people then," you start, "Did you hear anything about the Vizier's plans?"

"Princess Cherise, would you mind helping me with some transmutation?" Sen calls out, your sister hopping over.

"I will gather wood for fire," Hundira says, pulling out the handaxe opposite her blade. Taking a moment, you notice the woman seems to be armed to the teeth- sword, axe, a coil of rope with some sort of bludgeon at the end, shield- it's almost comical.

Turns out it is pretty hard.

You find hare tracks easily enough, and you even manage to sneak up on the burrow without alerting your prey.

It is only then that you realize that you have neither a hunting bow nor a spear with which to hunt with. Just your saber. And after a truly embarrassing attempt, you realize trying to hunt with a sword is a Pretty Bad Idea Actually. You probably should have just worked on making some snares- or hell, even carving up a rough spear might have been more useful. Fishing might have been a better option.

As you nurse your ego, you realize the sun is starting to dip low, and a brief jolt of panic passes through you as you can't find the trail back to camp.

Right, of course, no need to panic- sun is setting, so that should be the direction of the river. Just have to find it, backtrack to the edge of the forest, and take the long way back.

...So you're in for a bit of a hike.

Leaves crunch beneath your boots as you continue your journey, the chill autumn air refreshing and invigorating. Now that you're not so focused on either Running or some Project, your mind thinks back to the events of the day.

You're a fugitive now. That fact is starting to sink in. You don't know where the rest of your family is, or if they even made it out of the castle. You can only hope- better to be optimistic than give in to despair. You need a plan, that much is certain- but what? You're no assassin, and regardless if the vizier has as much of the guard on his side as he seems to, it'll be a tough wall of security to crack through. You'll need an army of your own- or at the very least a very good team.

Agreed. We need to turn to someone for help, but we need to be sure they're not going to stab us in the back. When/if we find somewhere safe to plant roots we'll need to raise forces to take back our home. It may also pay to have someone still inside of the city to act as a spy and informant for us.

Maybe, Kalina could do it?
>>
>>3474554
>>3474560
>>3474573

The only trouble with contacting your Mother's family in Forlaque is time- by the time you could rally forces from there to lay siege back on the castle, the vizier could already have fortified the walls and started stockpiling food. It'd be a long, drawn out wait, and no doubt the vizier would force the common folk to take up arms should it turn violent. It's an option, for sure- but it doesn't sit too well with you.

Hundira's connections might be a bit of a wildcard- the new orcish nation of Vuzyek is a recent endeavor, from what you've heard. Apparently, the current warlord- Mordekai Rex- was an unknown until he started forcing the rest of the orcish clans to stop fighting each other and bend the knee to him. By all accounts, the man is surprisingly concerned with the good of the next generation instead of holding onto ancient grudges, a rare quality in an orc. The potential alliance with the orcs was a surprise- and they have some of the fastest infantry in the world, marching tireless for days on end. If you could only send a message to them, you might be able to catch the vizier with his pants down.

But that's another path that could end with the deaths of many of your own citizens.

>>3474638

Though, if you stick around, sneak back into the city and start gathering forces from the citizenry- well, at the very least that's one group that the vizier can't use against you. And who knows- perhaps Mother and Father are already long on their way to Forlaque to bring their armies to bear.

As you crest a small hill, you can hear the sounds of running water ahead; the river must be near-

"What was that?"

You dart behind a tree- the red and gold uniformed forms of royal guards searching through the forest. You count six of them- damn it.

>Stand and fight- we can take them!
>Sneak around, try not to draw attention. Can't risk leading them back to the others.

If they're not loyal, talking to them would be a huge mistake

We're good at talking and etiquette, not sneaking around the woods. Use the skill with the +2 bonus instead of the -1 penalty.

If they want to arrest or kill us, that +2 bonus won't help very much

I'm just going with the option that has the least chance of failing. We suck at stealth.

Alright, time to channel your inner spy and sneak past these chumps.

You turn to take a step-

Crunch.

Yeah, that tracks.

"Hey! Over there!"

The guards are already chasing you. Time to book it. You sprint northward, up the river, weaving between the trees to try to lose them- from the shouts continuing to follow you, it doesn't seem to be working.

>Condition marked: Afraid, -1 to Warfare rolls

Your heart is pounding in your chest, and there's a slight ringing in your ears. Not even a day out, and it seems like you're going to die. Your legs carry you forward, you just have to escape, you just have to-

You hear a yelp behind you.

>Cont.
>>
>>3474733

Something flies overhead, and you hear a squelch behind you- you stumble, turning and drawing your sword as you see one of the guards fall, clutching an arrow sticking from his chest. One of his fellows lays dead yards behind, the four remains guards stopped dead in their tracks.

There's a rustling overhead, and a figure drops in the middle of them.

One guard immediately turns, spear leveled as the cloaked figure raises a shortbow and fires two quick arrows in succession. They rolled to the right, dodging the swipe of the guard behind them. One of the other remaining two goes to aid- the last keeps his eyes on you.

Adrenaline is rushing in your veins, and your brain is screaming at you to flee. But you shore up your resolve- at least for a moment- as the guard takes a stab at you. You parry it with ease, but your attempts to gain ground are for naught. You cannot get in reach of him, and he cannot land a blow on you- it is stalemate.

At least, until a spear rams through him from behind. He gasps, choking on the blood now filling his lungs, and collapses. The cloaked figure stands behind him, the other remaining guards lying dead at their feet. You keep a firm grip on your sword- they seem to be on your side, but they're also incredibly dangerous. Who the hell is this person?

"Nice evening for a stroll, eh?"

You can practically feel the raised eyebrow energy radiating from under the cloak. You clear your throat.

"I-in any case, you have my gratitude, sir- I'm afraid I've left my funds in my other castle, but I'll gladly help you with searching the bodies for valuables."

Plus, hanging on to a few of those spears wouldn't be a bad idea.

The cloaked figure snorts, before finally pulling back their hood.

"Sir? You are absolutely adorable, little princeling."

She gives you a sweeping bow, stowing her bow behind her back before getting back up.

"My name is Tashka- I'm your father's spymaster, unfortunate we have to meet like this, mm?"

"I've never heard of a Tashka working under my father."

"Well, then I guess I'm doing my job right as spymaster."

Damn, she's got you there.

If she can find us, maybe others can too.
>>
>>3474885

"How did you find me?"

"Luck, mostly," She says, kneeling down and searching one of the bodies. You begin to help as well. The corpses are already starting to cool- you try not to think about that too much.

"Originally I was tailing these ones to make sure they catch the trail of your mother and father."

>>3474837

"You know where they are?"

She nods, "Safe and sound- for now, at least. Give 'em until nightfall to be out of the country," She gives you a pointed look, "If you want to catch up to them, we'll have to leave."

"I can't- I was with others when we escaped, but I got separated."

"Damn- who?"

"My sister, the orcish dignitary, and a couple of the staff."

It's quiet for a bit- aside from the spear, this guard only has a dagger on him as a sidearm.

"You know, if you're really the spymaster," You start, not looking directly at Tashka, "How the hell did the vizier get away with this in the first place? Aren't you supposed to catch these sorts of things."

Silence for a moment longer, before she sighs.

"One of my own was covering for him, the bastard. By the time I realized what had happened, the vizier already turned most of the guard, military, and extra-military forces to his side."

She stands, stretching, with a serious look on her face, "Sometimes those closest to you are the ones that are most likely to betray you."

>>3474851

"Well... I can only assume you did all you could, good sir."

She smirks at you, "Again with that?"

"Killed that guard with his friend's spear easy enough- intimacy with a shaft and all that."

She snorts back a laugh, before tossing you a large leather quiver.

"Here- put the spears in this. It'll be easier than trying to carry them all at once. Whereabouts is your group, d'you think?"

>Point her in the right direction, let the most skilled tracker lead

Now that you're at the river, you've got a general idea of which direction the group should be. Once the two of you hit the treeline, it's a much easier trek- just need to find the right spot where the lot of you crashed in from.

(Alright it's getting late for me, so I'm gonna put a break there and I'll be back when I can make it- I work for the next four days, so unlikely to be before then.)
