Hello and welcome back to Mortal Kombat Konquest!

On today's episode, we take control of Jacqui Briggs, the hard-hitting tough-as-nails daughter of Jackson Briggs. Dedicated to her family and the life of a soldier in a world much larger than she is, Jacqui has been a solid member of the New Defenders, a stone for others to lean on when they need help. Through all of the adventures, up and downs they have faced, she has remained resolute and sure, unwavering in her duty, but everyone has their limit...

Our story continues now!
>>
Deep within the Syrian Desert, hidden within a range of mountains and obscured by natural terrain and the heat of the sun lies an entrance to a deep, dark, subterranean cavern. There are many such lairs spread across the deserts of the world, claimed by the true inhabitants of Earthrealm: the raptors. Having remained hidden for millennia after the Great Migration split their peoples in two and they learned of the horrible fate that befel their Zaterran brethren, their grand scheme to take over the surface world from the disgusting humans had been going flawlessly... until recently.

It is not exactly known how the accursed New Defenders learned of their plot, but that matters little to the sentry known as Xantus. He is a strong, proud warrior, though his talents do not lie in matters of subtlety. Unable to change his appearance as convincingly as the infiltrator caste, he is nevertheless a valuable asset to his kind, tall and strong and he has been waiting patiently for his chance to strike at the humans. The whispers of the New Defenders attacking their secret facilities and kidnapping the infiltrators who were sent to integrate into human governments has sent the saurians and their beloved queen into high alert; every remaining infiltrator was recalled to these lairs with captives, several of whom are within this very cave.

Xantus remains in his position, seemingly highly alert but the truth is that his mind is elsewhere, imagining the coming conquest of the human capitals. While he is but a low guard, he dreams of the great glory he will achieve when he is finally given the chance to test his mettle in combat against the humans, perhaps even the New Defenders! In the meantime, he will remain vigilant, though he knows it is impossible that they could have found this cavern, for only the highest and most elite of the royal caste knows of this place. It will not be long before he gets his chance to face a human, and when that time comes, he will---

An arm wraps around his throat while a firm, vice-like grip, augmented by advanced gauntlets, holds onto the top of his head. His yellow eyes nearly bulge out of his green skull as he struggles, trying to shriek out a warning, but the arm is tight and unyielding. He kicks and scratches at the gauntlets, but within moments he is out of breath and out of consciousness.

Jacqui Briggs drops him to the floor, then cracks her gauntlet-covered knuckles. Nearby, Takeda finishes another sentry, dropping down upon him from the cave roof and knocking him out with a single stroke. Somewhat more elegant than her takedown, perhaps, but then again he is a ninja and she is a soldier. So long as the job gets done, she doesn't much care how elegant it is performed.

Frost sneaks up on her takedown with a kori dagger in hand, ready to slit his throat, but Jacqui holds up a metal hand. "No killing," she says.

"You still hoping to sue for peace with these guys?" Frost says with narrowed eyes. This is still a stealth mission, however, and so she speaks softly. "You haven't been on the receiving end of one of their needles. I have. Need I remind you that they developed weapons that were meant specifically to kill us, and wouldn't hesitate to use them?"

"We have our orders," Jacqui replies, looking over at Takeda as he and Kung Jin drag their sentry off into the shadows. She grabs digs her hands under the arms of the one she just knocked out and hoists him halfway off the ground.

Frost grunts in a dissatisfied manner. "Whatever you say, Army boots." The Lin Kuei picks up the saurian by the feet so that he doesn't drag and they hide him behind a rock. They take a moment to bind his hands and feet, along with gagging him with an acid-resistant fabric. Their previous encounters with the saurians has given them plenty of ideas on how to deal with the slippery serpents. Takeda and Jin silently hop back over to them, bounding across the open floor of the cavern.

Jacqui kneels and gathers her team around. "Remember, if we get caught, the secretary's life is assuredly forfeit. That's why no killing," she says to Frost in particular. "Any hint of blood in the air and we risk them sniffing it out."

"I just wish we didn't have to wear these rediculous outfits," Jin mutters, indicating their green-colored attire, taken from previous saurian owners in prior conflicts. "I know it's to mask our scent, but what about our poor noses?"

Jacqui takes a moment to swallow back her gag reflex. She agrees with Jin that the outfits are horrible, but they have allowed them to sneak upon saurian sentries without being detected, so the discomfort is a small price to pay for their success so far.

"We need to move," Jacqui says. "If they send someone to relieve the sentries and finds them, we need to at least have reached the secretary first, and any other captives."

Jacqui looks at the Lin Kuei. "You take point. The three of us will follow behind."

If Frost has a snappy remark, she keeps it to herself. The green-clad cryomancer keeps low and moves forward, putting her years of experience in stealing on the streets and training from the Lin Kuei to good use. Kung Jin is no slouch either when it comes to stealth, and Takeda is Shirai Ryu. If she is being honest with herself, and she rarely isn't, Jacqui is somewhat intimidated by their prowess, to the point where she isn't certain she should have been put in charge of this mission.

But she is in command of this team, and she'll not let doubt over how stealthy she can be get in her way. After all, she's already taken out one saurian; how hard could the rest of this mission be?

The come to an opening in the cavern leading to a much larger chamber. They hug the wall as Frost leads them on, but Jacqui steals more than a few glances towards the center of the cave. Unlike their technologically-advanced laboratories, these ancestral homes for the saurians seem to be more traditional in nature, with large stone structures, archways and hand-made holes in walls leading to small chambers. The cavern is lit by large fires and a thin mote of sunlight coming in from a hole in the ceiling, and saurians can be seen going about their lives all around it.

She estimates at least several dozen men, women and lizardlings scurrying about. Her brow furrows as she realizes this is a civilian population, but she knows that all saurians can be dangerous, with their claws, acidic bile, long tongues, camouflage and other natural talents.

Up ahead, Frost pauses. Takeda and Jin pause in front of Jacqui, nearly making her bump into them. She snaps her attention back to the mission at hand.

The Lin Kuei is keeping very still as two saurians walk by, speaking something in their native hissing tongue. They pause, inconveniently holding their conversation in a place where Frost would be easily seen were she to move.

Jacqui signals to her to hold position, and she does so, with her hands close to her chest. Frost slows her breathing, knowing that it often comes out in puffs of white, especially in a hot place like this, and despite the desert outside, this cave is surprisingly humid. Jacqui notes a bead of sweat forming on her brow, and hopes that the scent of the costumes they are wearing will not be overpowered by it.

Takeda and Jin seem cool, like they were born to be here. Jacqui reminds herself that she was, too. Gently reaching over to Jin's shoulder, she leans in to whisper, "Anything in those Shaolin scrolls about the saurians that might come in handy right about now?"

The monk slowly shakes his head. "The Shaolin, like everyone else, thought the saurians were long gone. Not even Lord Raiden knew they were here. I suppose that's a testiment to how far they've gone to conceal themselves." He looks around the cave. "But if I were to make an educated guess, based on the general surroundings and what we've learned from our prior encounters, that," he points with a low finger, "is where we want to go."

Jacqui follows his gaze towards a far corner, dimly-lit and guarded, with a narrow tunnel. "You think the prisoners are kept there because of the guards?"

"Well, that and the shoe in front of it."

She squints. Sure enough, a white shoe lies in the dirt and sand, one that is decidedly human in origin, unless the saurians have taken up wearing high heels.

"Huh. Good eye."

He smirks over his shoulder. "Archer."

The two saurians near Frost move on, and Jacqui signals with a hand sign for the direction to travel in. She finds a cut in the floor and hops into it, moving along the combination of natural and worked stone with the three of them following. Soon enough, they're near the guarded area. These saurians are alert, with serpent-staffs topped with curving blades. Much more vigilant than the ones up front.

Takeda gives Jacqui a look, one that boosts her confidence. She's always admired him in a way, how easily he can carry himself into any situation with a smile and a willingness to do what needs to be done. Had she not been dating Cao at the time, and had he not pursued Sheeva, perhaps there would be something there worth exploring... With but a glance, he communicates that he's ready when she is; she need only give the order.

Jacqui clenches and unclenches her hands a few times, feeling the subtle servos within gently whir beneath the metal surface. She admits to herself that it was somewhat impulsive when she took out the first guard; Frost, with her superior stealth, should have done it, but she was worried she would kill the raptor. She looks at Frost now, who gives her an unreadable expression. There has always been difficulty working with Frost, due to her trouble with following authority and desire to do things her own way, that and numerous personality problems and conflicts, and her past trauma, and---

She blinks and refocuses. She could attempt to sneak up on this more vigilant guard, but one mistake and it could be over. Takeda can handle one of them, of that she has no doubt, but can she take the other? Jin likely could. Frost most definitely could, but can she trust her to remain non-lethal? She looks again at Takeda. Perhaps he could take them both down, but that would be risky as well...

The others look to her for the call.

Jacqui looks back again at Frost. She's had her problems with the Lin Kuei girl in the past, as have most of the team, but recent events have resulted in something of a change in her. The situation with losing her powers and learning about her parents, though Jacqui is only vaguely aware of the finer details, has caused her to seemingly make more of an effort to open up and become more of a team player.

'Now's a good chance to prove herself,' she thinks. 'But then again, if she screws up here, things could get... messy.'

She's taken too long to decide. As her heart takes another beat, she nods at Frost and Takeda, and they get to work. Jacqui and Jin keep low as the two of them break away, each splitting up to get into position for an attack. She watches Frost carefully.

'Stick to the plan,' Jacqui says, subconsciously gripping the stone in front of her as she looks on. 'Stick to the plan...'

Takeda darts in from the side, striking the saurian with a kick to the back of the knee before hook his arm around his foe's neck and taking him down. Frost lingers for a moment, and Jacqui worries she may have made a horrible mistake in trusting her, but then the Lin Kuei leaps upon the back of the sentry, wrapping her legs around his chest from behind and striking both sides of his head with two powerful chops.

Frost catches both herself and the saurian as he falls forward. She signals to Jacqui, and for a moment she thinks she catches a hint of cockiness in the cryomancer's expression---but only for a moment.

With the sentries disposed of quietly, they approach the cells. There are several people here, and Jacqui takes a moment to retrieve a datapad from her belt. It scans their scared faces, immediately identifying them in the registry built from the list of suspected saurian kidnapping victims.

Including, in the most secluded cell, one Secretary Blake, kidnapped and replaced with an infiltrator years ago, long before the New Defenders was even a concept. "Mr. Secretary," Jacqui says with a smile. "We're here to rescue you and the others."

He looks up with weak eyes. "Oh, thank God..." he whispers in a hoarse voice. "I knew... I knew one day..."

Takeda takes out a pulse blade, preparing to cut the cells, when suddenly there is a sound from the great cavern. Drums, a strange beat with an odd rythym, begin to pound. The prisoners all freeze.

"What's that?" Takeda asks.

"It means someone is coming," one of the prisoners, a lady in a white suit and likely the owner of the missing shoe if her bare foot is any indication, tells them.

"They found us out?" Jin wonders.

"No," another one says. "Someone important... one of their leaders, we think..."

Jacqui pauses as the tactical situation shifts.

"Focus on the prisoners," Jacqui instructs them, and Takeda nods. He strikes up the pulse blade and begins cutting through the bars while Jin gets to work on the opposite side, using his chakram to cut open one of the locks. Frost puts her hands together and blasts one set of bars after instructing the prisoners to back away, lest they feel some of the cold bite of her cryomancy.

Jacqui approaches the cell containing Secretary Blake. "You might want to stand back, Mr. Secretary." Raising her gauntlets, she cocks her arms and charges them up before thrusting them forward, smashing through the lock with a bright flash. The metal bends and yields to her attack and the cell door swings open.

She takes a moment to admire her newest gauntlets, forged from studying the technology of Rellim Ohcanep. "These babies will do nicely," she says, stepping into the cell to help the captive up to his feet.

The attack on the door made a great noise, but it will not be much trouble for long---they are on their way out. Takeda is already prepping the personal portal generator. Outside the prison cells, the drumming is growing louder; hopefully it masked the use of her gauntlets.

Within moments, the portal is up and running, and though frightened, the people are coaxed through it by the team. Jacqui helps Blake through and Jin follows in last, his bow at the ready. A saurian leaps into the chamber, perhaps having overheard them or having discovered the guards, but all he receives is an arrow in the chest. The portal closes behind them as Jin leaps backwards into it, and the team and all of the captives are now safely within the New Defenders base.

Special Forces personnel were on standby for this moment and rush forward with blankets and medical supplies, quickly tending to the captives, some of whom are in worse condition than others. As the real Secretary Blake is placed upon a stretcher to be taken to the infirmiry, he grabs onto Jacqui's arm. "Thank you..." he says as a breathing mask is fit over his face.

Jacqui smiles warmly as Takeda lightly clasps her shoulder. "I'll be damned. That's got to be the smoothest mission against those green suckers we've ever had."

Jin leans on his staff as Frost folds her arms. "Wasn't bad," the cryomancer admits. "Can I get out of this outfit now? Green's not my color."

"I think it looks good on you," Jin says with a smirk. "Really brings out the eyes."

"Heads up," Jacqui says as General Sonya approaches. She snaps to attention.

"Specialist Briggs, fine work, damn fine," the general compliments her. "At ease. You'll need to be debriefed, but you have the go-ahead to change first."

"Thank you," Frost mutters, tearing off the hood and exposing her bright blue hair. "If the raptors don't get me, their stink will."

Sonya cocks a brow. "Yes, well... change and shower, then. Report to the debriefing room when ready."

Jacqui nods. "Yes ma'am."
>>
>>3527360

As Jin and Takeda break away, enthusing about the mission, Frost gives Jacqui a funny look before, in a mockery of her voice, she says, "Yes ma'am, right away ma'am, will do ma'am."

Jacqui takes it in stride. "Upset that you didn't get the praise for the mission?"

"Please. As if I'm looking for that."

"Well, you'll get it from me anyway. You did good work there. I'm glad we had you along."

Frost avoids eye contact. "Yeah, well... Whatever."

She pushes on ahead, intent on not looking back at Jacqui's satisfied expression. 'She's warming up, if that was even possible,' she thinks. She smiles wider, exceptionally pleased with the mission. The team has been needing a good operation like this to boost morale, and her morale is considerably boosted.

In a fast and efficient manner bred out of military training, Jacqui sheds her foul-smelling disguise once in her room, showers and changes into a proper work uniform. Once she has laced on her boots and tucked in her sleeves, she slides her gauntlets back onto her hands.

She takes but a moment to run her fingers over them. She isn't quite sure what about these tools that she finds so attractive and right. There is her father, of course, and his famously augmented arms, but then is it a matter of blood? Or is it purely admiration, or a combination of the two?

Either way, she knows that few things feel more satisfying than giving someone or something a good pummeling with them. After properly securing them, she heads out. She is the first at the mission room, which gives her some time to enjoy the pleasant surprise of her father waiting for her inside.

"I thought I smelled cigars," she says, moving around the table to give her father a hug. He throws his arms around her and chuckles around the stogie in his teeth.

"The general told me all about your mission. In and out, objectives secured, no casualties, mission accomplished. You do your old man proud."

Jacqui hides a blush from her father's praise. "Wasn't so bad. Something funny was happening at the end there, though..."

His brow furrows. "Hm?"

At that moment, the general walks in, alongside Fireseed and Sheeva. Jacqui takes her place at the table as Takeda, Jin and Frost filter in behind them.

Sonya listens to their report on the mission in relative silence. "Good work," she says when they are complete. "The captives are recovering. We're hoping they can provide us further intel on the saurian operation, particularly these strange rituals you began to hear."

Sheeva stands up. "These drums you describe. They are similar in function to the drums we play for royal guests in Kuatan."

"You suspect royalty was visiting them?" Jax asks.

"It is possible," Sheeva replies. "We know they make use of portals, and their society is caste-based. From our interrogations of the one who pretended to be Blake that they are matriarchal, and follow a queen."

"A hive queen," Sonya nods. "One above all of the others, a mother for the entire saurian population. It might not have been her visiting that hive you were infiltrating, however."

"Do we have another suspect?" Fireseed asks.

"Not entirely, but I'm willing to bet that once they learn we've infiltrated this hive and rescued some of their prisoners, they'll be extra careful." Sonya stands up, putting her arms behind her back. "That's why we'll need a new plan."

Jax puts his cigar out on his metal palm. "You aren't still considering that idea you had that I told you was damn foolish, are you?"

Sonya looks over at him. "I am, colonel."

"With all due respect, general, I think it's a damn foolish thing to do."

Jacqui cocks her brow, her interest piqued.

Sonya puts her hands on her hips. "Reptile."

Several others look around at each other, then back at her. "Reptile?" Sheeva asks.

"Currently held in a cell in Z'unkahrah by Kotal Kahn after he was defeated in the form of Onaga, he might just be what we need to track down the leadership of the saurians here in Earthrealm."

"How, exactly?" Fireseed asks.

"We plant a tracker on him without him knowing it and ensure he makes contact with his fellow saurians. Once we've determined he's made his way to the top, we bust them in a surprise operation and put an end to this raptor nonsense once and for all."

"How do we even known he'll get to queen lizzie?" Jax asks.

Sheeva folds her arms while two of them rest on the table in front of her. "Reptile is a fool, but he is strong. He is likely the strongest of the saurians, though that isn't saying much. If he were to pledge himself to their service, it would only be a matter of time before he was brought before their queen."

"And how long will that be?" Jax points out. "There are too many variables. Too much risk in letting Reptile out of his cage. That, and Kotal might not agree."

"I'm willing to enter into negotiations with Kotal Kahn," Sonya replies. "He may need our assistance in a number of ways. The alternative is springing Reptile ourselves."

Sheeva's brow furrows. "To free an enemy from an ally's captivity without that ally's consent is hardly honorable."

"It's merely an option, and one I don't want to take myself. We have Kotal's adopted son on the team. I'm sure we can get him to play ball."

"Kotal is not interested in playing sports," Sheeva says, and the room is silent. Takeda leans over to whisper in her ear, and her eyes burn for a moment and she sighs. "And here I had thought I had spent enough time among you to not make such a fool of myself." Takeda's amused look doesn't escape her sight and the one she gives him promises that he will come to regret it later.

Sonya brushes the awkward moment aside and continues. "The saurians are well-entrenched and might very well abandon their caves soon, especially after this raid. We do have an opportunity, however. Now that we have proven we can find them and strike at their heart, they may be more willing to negotiate a prisoner exchange: our saurians for their remaining captives."

Jin frowns. "Is that a fair trade? Every saurian we give them back is a fighter for their side."

"Hostages are hostages," Sonya says. "We must try to save them however we can, and there is no certainty that we can continue these raids. In their desperation, they might threaten the hostages and even kill them. Our raid should have them scared, but we don't want them so scared they make a mistake like that."

If all the saurians want is a home, then give them another realm and tell them to fuck off. Jacqui speaks up. "Can't we send them to another realm? They have women and children of their own. We can't exactly just exterminate them."

Jax nods softly, agreeing with his daughter, but the general shakes her head. "Unfortunately, they think Earthrealm is their home. When their people split long ago and the other half went to Zaterra, which was eventually conquered by Shao Kahn, it only served to further convince them that they were right to remain."

"They didn't defend Earthrealm when Shao Kahn turned his gaze upon it," Fireseed says in a dark tone. "They don't deserve it."

"True, but they only started infiltrating us after Shao Kahn's invasion," Takeda points out. "They're doing this out of some kind of misguided notion of survival. They even helped form this team specifically to take out threats from other realms." He looks around the room. "Ironic that we're now working to take them down."

"The only way we could get them to move is through forceful eviction, and that will only make them vengeful," Sonya continues. "We have enough enemies from other realms. This one is from our own, and we have to deal with it here."

"But is peace possible?" Jin asks. "They've co-existed with us without us even knowing it for thousands of years. If we can secure an audience with this matriarch, perhaps terms could be discussed. Earthrealm is big enough for all of us."

"But not if they don't see it that way," Sonya says with her arms folded. Jin frowns, rubbing the side of his forehead.

"We could always go for that total extermination option," Frost points out. Jacqui shoots her a shocked look and is about to retort when Frost goes on, "Not totally, just enough. You know, beat them into submission. Force their hand. They tried to infiltrate, they were caught, now their secrecy is gone. We know about them. They can't go back to the way things were before now that we do, when all they did was live in caves and hide from us. I say we treat them like any other enemy and just keep chipping away at them until they surrender."

"That would work just fine were it not for their captives," Jax reminds her.

"Then we capture their queen," Fireseed offers. "Why trade one-for-one, when we could trade their queen for all of their human captives?"

Sheeva seems to like the plan, but raises a point, "The problem is finding this queen."

"Which is precisely why I suggest using Reptile," Sonya nods in her direction.

This is regardless of what we decide, though the option of capturing the queen seems the most powerful on the table.
Reiterating >>3527552, need I remind you that
a) Reptile is an idiot and is bound to mess something up somewhere, and
b) the saurians must be pretty good at counterintelligence if they've remained hidden until now. There's a good chance they'll sniff out the rat immediately if Reptile is bugged and sent back.

Several smaller conversations happen across the room while Jacqui sits and ponders for a moment. She looks up at the general and places her hands on the table. "Ma'am, with all due respect, I don't think using Reptile is a very good idea. He's a wild card, and one we already have locked up. Throwing him into the mix is dangerous."

Sheeva nods in agreement. "The fool became the vessel for the Dragon King thinking it would grant him power and Outworld suffered for it. He can do nothing right."

Jacqui adds on, "And the saurians are good at counterintelligence. They might sniff out any bug we plant on him."

"Not if he doesn't know it is there," Sonya replies. "We plant a subdermal tracker on him while he is unconscious and link it to our global satellite network. Anywhere he goes, we can open a portal to. There'd be nowhere in the world he could hide."

"Why not do it on someone else? One of the saurians we've already captured?" Jax asks.

"There's no guarantee that they'll see the queen. Reptile might be a fool, but to the saurians, he's an oddity: the one survivor of the Zaterran breed, and a warrior strong enough to have fought in the Mortal Kombat tournaments. I'd bet my rank that he'd get an audience with their queen."

Jacqui can see her point, but still has doubts. "I still think we should play with the cards we have instead of bringing in another player, ma'am. We should attempt negotiations for peace, prisoner trades, even try capturing the queen ourselves, but I can't get behind bringing Reptile in on this."

Sonya looks around the room; most seem to agree. "Your objections are understood, but I still intend on discussing the matter with Kotal Kahn. For now, you are dismissed. Remain on base: all temporary portal activity is restricted."

"May we ask why?" Takeda says, leaning forward.

"We have another mission, but we're still sorting through the details. Remain on standby for the time being. Move out."

Jacqui pushes back her chair and stands with the others as she nods at her superior. Outside in the hall, she and her fellow teammates discuss the meeting while Sheeva and Fireseed split off to speak with themselves. Jacqui catches a brief nonverbal exchange between Takeda and Sheeva; a small wink from him and a nudge to his side from her.

"Seems like the general is set on her Reptile idea," Jin says. "Too bad nobody in that room has enough rank to talk her out of it."

Jacqui shakes her head and replies, "It's not always about rank. A good leader listens to her subordinates, but ultimately it is her call to make. She has a bigger picture than any of us."

"Maybe, but she's not the one getting punched by the picture," Frost says. "We're the ones who have to carry out the hard work."

"She can fight if she needs to," Jacqui says, feeling slightly defensive of her superior officer and the namesake of her middle name. Frost merely shrugs in response.

After splitting up from the others, Jacqui heads towards the gym where she suspects her best friend is. Her suspicion is proven correct, for Cassie is within, wearing light workout clothing and beating on a punching bag. Jacqui smirks as she enters, and the blonde sergeant sees her almost immediately.

"Whatup, girlfriend?" Cassie says with a bright smile. She drops her fists and puts her hands on the punching bag to stop it from swinging. "Heard you had a good mission."

"Damn good," Jacqui replies, setting her gauntlets down on a bench and unzipping her armored top before shedding it so that she can work out in her tanktop. "I'm in a great mood because of it."

"Well if you feel half as good as you look, then I'm definitely jealous. Them muscles, girl!"

"Careful now," Jacqui says with coy look and a wag of her finger.

"Just being friendly, old habbits and all," Cassie says with a shrug. "Wanna join me for a set?"

"Always."

For the next hour, the two of them engage in a variety of exercises, from lifting weights to core workouts and some light aerobics. As they do, they chat and catch up, having not had much of a chance lately with all of the chaos their lives have been caught up in. At the end of the hour, they're both thoroughly warmed up for their final workout of choice: sparring.

Cassie throws her friend a pair of kickboxing gloves, which Jacqui catches and looks at. "You sure?"

"You always said how you want to go pro, so let's use their rules." She approaches the ring and climbs under its ropes, and Jacqui follows, putting on the gloves as she does. Cassie chides at her, "I know those aren't as advanced as the gloves you're used to wearing, but you can still punch, right?"

"Oh, you're about to find out," Jacqui says, balling her fists and holding them up high.

"Just like the good ol' days," Cassie comments as she punches the air in front of her, bouncing on her toes as she does.

"We'll see how long you'll say that when you're on the floor with me on top of you."

"Promises, promises!"

Cassie is more lithe than Jacqui, but Jacqui is much more grounded, more centered and stronger. Cassie darts in with a few jabs and a kick, and Jacqui begins things defensively, conserving her inner power for an explosive outburst, merely waiting for the right opportunity. She knows that Cassie can handle anything she can throw at her, and always has. For years they've fought and played and, until recently, loved on occasion. But right now, they're fighting, and she intends to hold nothing back against the daughter of Cage.

Jacqui grabs Cassie's leg as she kicks and brings her to the floor, taking her down effortlessly. Cassie slips away from her with a clever twist, springing back up to her feet. Jacqui attempts to sweep her leg, but the lighter girl bounds over it and attempts a falling punch upon her. Jacqui blocks with with both forearms and deflects her back with a kick, giving her room to get up on her own feet.

The two of them square off, testing each other with probing strikes and quick footwork. Jacqui's arms are poised and ready, framing her upper body and face, knuckles inward and gaze fierce. Cassie blows her a kiss and goes in again, but Jacqui is ready for her.

Cassie charges and Jacqui steps forward and to the side, putting all her weight on it, before wheeling to the opposite side and bringing her fist swiping in front of her like a comet. Cassie stops and blocks it, the blow forcing her arms to follow its tragectory, but the Briggs girl isn't done yet. She follows it up by thrusting her body in the opposite direction and following through with another punch, and then another, and another---left, right, left, right---with each blow containing enough force to knock a man off his feet.

Cassie is blown away by this pure offensive volley and her arms drop after the third strike, allowing Jacqui to connect solidly to her. In Jacqui's mind, she recalls the hours she spent with her father honing and practicing techniques not only in the ring, but on the screen, watching old film reels he had collected of some of the greatest boxers in history. She performs the Dempsey Roll flawlessly, forcing Cassie back as she slams a fist into her jaw, but she isn't done yet.

>>3528830

This isn't a boxing match, and Jacqui isn't just a boxer. She brings up a knee and jabs it into Cassie's gut, and then another, each one stepping forward like a train of fists, elbows and knees. Cassie is forced into the corner, assaulted from every angle and winded.

>>3528847

Left with no option, her body suddenly glows green and she surges forward, headbutting Jacqui and forcing her back. Jacqui shakes her head and rids herself of the fuzziness, but when she is ready to fight again she stops when she gets a good looks at Cassie, whose last attack was one of desperation. The Cage girl is leaning on the ropes, barely holding herself up and breathing heavily.

"Holy... shit..." she manages to say, her head leaning forward. "Damn girl, were you... trying to... kill me?"

Jacqui smirks. "Nah. Just evening the score from our last little bout that I let you win." She holds out her hand and helps Cassie up, putting an arm under her and kneeling to help her out of the ring. "I can always go easy on you next time, though."

In spite of her winded state, Cassie laughs. "As if I would... ever have it any other way."

Once they are out of the ring, the two of them towel off and grab some water bottles. Jacqui tries not to giggle at Cassie's nice new bruise. The blonde fighter feels under her nose and observes some blood on her fingers. "First blood. I'll remember that."

"I'm shaking in my boots," Jacqui quips back at her.

As Cassie sits down, she compliments her friend again on her technique. "I suddenly had a lot of sympathy for that punching bag I was using earlier."

She suddenly grabs Jacqui and pulls her in close, putting her bruised face next to hers while taking out her cell phone and snapping a quick selfie. "I think I'll tag it as 'girl talk' or 'cat fight.' What do you think?"

"I think you spend too much time worrying about what to put on social media," Jacqui says as she rolls her eyes.

At that moment, Jin enters the room and looks around, his eyes focusing on them. He approaches. "Pardon me, oh-so-sweaty ones, but the general has another assignment for us. Word is, we're going to Japan."

"What for?" Cassie asks.

Jin cocks his brow when he gets a good look at her. "Nice shiner. Not sure. Something related to the saurians, so gear up and get ready to move."

Jacqui doesn't need to be told twice. She heads towards her vest and gauntlets as Cassie stands up. "I'll meet you there, Briggs," she says as she leaves the gym.

As she walks past Jin, he gets another look at her bruise, and Cassie sticks her tongue out at him. He then looks at her. "She piss you off or something?"

"Nah, just tough love."

"Right. You know, we had that at the temple, too, except we'd get hit with sticks."

"If you're homesick, we can always arrange to beat you up with sticks."

"I'll pass, sister. See you there."

As Jacqui leaves the gym, her phone buzzes softly in its pouch. She takes it out and sees that Cassie tagged her on her Friendships page, and there are already a thousand likes and a hundred or so comments. A quick glance at the comments has her regretting it immediately.

Jacqui rolls her eyes again and turns off notifications for the post. Ever since the public press conference, Cassie's been running the online fan groups for the team and her social media has blown up with every rando and creep on the internet. 'It doesn't help that she takes lord knows how many selfies in a day. She must have a million stalkers by now.'

Once, she received a random message from a man in Georgia asking to marry her. She couldn't have blocked him or changed her messenging settings to 'friends only' faster.

"The internet was a mistake," she muses with a small grin. She turns the corner and sees her father on his phone.

"Nice pic," he says, looking up with a grin. "Dempsey Roll?"

"Dempsey Roll," she says with pride as he hugs her under one arm.

"So, another mission?"

"You tired?"

"Sir, no sir! I'm ready for three missions in a row!"

"Haha, that's my girl. Just don't blow yourself out. Remember, endurance is important, but everyone has their limit."

"You never hit yours."

"Not that you ever saw," he says, lighting tapping her jaw. "C'mon."

He takes her into the briefing room. Within sits Jin, Vapor, Takeda and Sam. Jacqui looks around. "No Frost?"

"She's needed for another assignment," Sonya says. "Have a seat, specialist." Jacqui takes her place alongside the others. "We've been honing our portal tracking for some time now. As you know, every kind of portal uses different energy signatures and everyone has their preferred style: demons, Outworld sorcerers, Chaosrealm mystics and so on. We haven't been able to track the saurians, but we think we found a way. We just got a hit in Japan, and we're sending you to scout out the area."

"Ah, to be home again," Takeda muses.

"This isn't a sightseeing trip, Takahashi. We believe the saurians might restrictively use their portals because they know we're close to figuring them out. Once you're on the ground, spread out and look for any signs of saurian activity."

"What is the area?" Jacqui asks.

"Just outside of Tokyo, the city of Hiratsuka in the Kanagawa Prefecture."

"I've been there," Takeda says. "Once or twice."

"We're picking up portal activity in both the underground and warehouse districts. The only reason it popped up on our radar was its consistency; multiple portals in a short period of time."

"Multiple portals, multiple saurians? Some kind of invasion force, perhaps?" Jin wonders aloud.

Jacqui looks up from the briefing notes in front of her. "Ma'am, what makes saurian portals different from most others?"

"Saurian magic isn't something we fully understand yet. We believe they use certain artifacts passed down from ancient times, as their magic doesn't appear to utilize souls. Their portals are subtle and stealthy, not unlike themselves. They've been using them for years without us knowing it, but we're finally finding them."

"Any help on the ground?" Takeda asks, his voice light with implication. "Perhaps a local agent...?"

"Yes, Takeda. Your father has been called in to assist us."

Takeda smiles and nods at the others. "This'll be a piece of cake."

At that moment, Cassie enters the briefing room. "Apologies for being late, ma'am."

Sonya gives her a discerning look. "Sergeant, you seem injured."

"Just a bruise, ma'am." Cassie shoots Jacqui a look and a tiny smile before stiffling it.

Sonya frowns. "I've already given the briefing and there are notes on the table. The more time we spend here, the more time the saurians have to slip through our fingers. Proceed to the portal chamber."

Jacqui stands up and gives Cassie an apologetic look, but the girl waves her away. Whatever chewing out she'll receive from her mother for her tardiness will come later.

Sliding on her full-auto gauntlets, heavy things with weathered-green finishes and mahine gun barrels built into the forearms, she joins her team in the portal chamber. They have their gear prepped, and technicians busy themselves around the chamber as they look up at the circular ring. A low humming noise begins to rise in intensity as Cassie smirks.

"This is always my favorite part of Stargate," she says over her shoulder to her friend.

Vapor looks over. "What is that? You bring it up almost every time we use the portal."

"I'll show you later," she says with a wave of her hand.

They shield their eyes as the portal fires up, lightning-like discharges flaring out from its edges. Wasting no time, they march into it in single-file, quickly rushing through. On the other side, they take up positions and Jacqui points her arms forward, ready to establish a perimeter.

They are in an empty warehouse. The portal seals shut behind them.

"Area's secure," Cassie says after performing a sweep. Her pistol in hand, she takes out her radio and communicates their successful passage into Japan. The group closes in and prepares to receive their orders.

Cassie slides her radio back into its holster. "We're going to split up into teams of two, maintain comms, and sweep the local area. Use your scanners to pick up any trace hints of abnormal energy signatures."

"I'll go with Vapor," Jacqui suggests. Cassie nods. Takeda volunteers to take Sam out, but Jin nudges him in the ribs and says he'll take her instead.

"What?" Takeda says, holding up his palms. Cassie taps him on the shoulder and drags him off with her. Sam mouths a silent 'Thank you' to Jin and they head towards another exit.

Jacqui and Vapor take a back entrance out into an old parking lot and begin walking down the streets and alleyways of the town. They get a few odd looks from the locals and a few photos taken from not-so-discreet onlookers, but they pay them little heed. At least, Jacqui does.

"You think it's wise, being out in the open like this?" Vapor asks, looking around nervously. "The saurians have an extensive network..."

"We can afford a little indescretion, I think," Jacqui replies. "Of course, if you'd like, you can always go invisible. I'll be the one who sticks out like a sore thumb."

Vapor nods and vanishes, but remains close to her.

"Ever been to Japan?" Jacqui asks, trying to make small talk.

"Not this part of it... and not for a very long time."

"You saw the world as part of your Lin Kuei training?"

"Something like that. We went to a few places to see what the world is like so that we would know what we are fighting for. I spent a lot of it like I am right now, invisible, watching people..."

"You still do that a lot?"

"W-what?"

"Go invisible and watch people."

"N-no. Not anymore. Not really, at all. Why?"

Jacqui looks over her shoulder as if looking at Vapor despite the girl being little more than a wisp of invisible cloud. Her reaction was a little odd, but Jacqui knows when to drop things.

After coming to an alleyway, Jacqui's scanner suddenly beeps. She takes it out and holds it up. A relatively simple device despite how complex its task is, the screen displays strange energy readings nearby. "Come on," Jacqui says, though she knows she doesn't need to; Vapor will be by her side the entire time, and her other side, and all around her really.

She jogs into the alleyway and stops when she comes upon a green puddle of bubbling goo. The scanner detected an unnusual concentration of acid, and this is it. "Looks like saurian stomach bile, alright," Jacqui says, taking out her radio. "Cage, this is Briggs. I've got a pile of green goo over here eating through the cement." She looks around. "No sign of the one who puked it up, though... or why."

As Cassie begins to respond, Vapor's voice in her ear suddenly shouts, "Jacqui, up there!"

Jacqui's head shoots up to the roof, catching the vague outline of a cloaked humanoid figure vanishing on the rooftop. Whoever it was was staring down at them. She immediately cuts off Cassie's response. "Possible target sighted on the roof! Giving pursuit!"

Vapor doesn't need to be told what to do. She whisks Jacqui up into her cloud and soars upwards before reforming them both onto the rooftop. The cloaked figure is dashing with inhuman speed across the rooftops, and they both immediately give chase.

When it reaches the edge of one roof, it leaps to another like a frog. Jacqui digs her heels onto the edge before leaping off, and Vapor's powers carry them both to the next one.

'Definitely not a local,' Jacqui thinks, watching the way the figure moves. She raises her arms and attempts to fire, spraying at the backside of the saurian, but he leaps down into another alleyway to avoid it. Jacqui flips off the roof and lands on the ground, trusting on Vapor to catch her which she does.

After rounding a corner, they come upon a dead end. "Where'd he go?" Vapor asks.

Jacqui notices that part of the wall is sticking out too far too late. The camouflaged saurian, his body textured like brick, kicks out and strikes Vapor in the face before attacking Jacqui, a living wall of brick and mortar coming at her with sharp claws. She brings up a hand and blocks the first strike, then gains some distance by backing up and prepares to fire on him again. He throws his cloak at her and she fires into it, shredding it with full-auto fire, but when the tattered remnants of the cloak fall away, he is gone.

"How in the...?"

Suddenly she takes a roundhouse kick to the back of the head and is sent rolling forward. She gets back up and aims her arms as the saurian moves his hands like a pair of snakes.

Finally, she gets a good look at him. He's dressed unlike any saurian she's ever seen before, almost regal-looking in a way, with a black cobra-like hood and gold trimmings lining his sleek outfit. His movements are graceful, and each seems to carry a purpose, even as he simply stands there slowly moving his narrow clawed hands into attack position. He surprises her again by speaking in an almost eloquent, yet nonetheless threatening tone beneath his black mask.

"I'll say this once: leave this place. I am not the enemy you seek. If you do not let me go, I will lose him."

Jacqui's face twists into one of confusion. "What?"

Cassie's voice comes over the radio, saying that they are closing in on their position for backup.

As Vapor picks herself back up, Jacqui carefully steps to her left, keeping her guard up. She knows that the others will be here within moments and quickly comes up with a plan to keep him talking, which he so far seems to be willing to do.

"What enemy? Who will get away?"

Underneath his cobra hood, his eyes narrow. "I don't have time for this."

He puts his hands together and they glow green as he creates a ball of force between his palms. As he seperates them, the ball launches towards her. Jacqui's eyes widen and she punches at it, but the ball explodes in a wave of green-colored energy that sends her hurtling backward.

The saurian turns and leaps onto the wall, scaling it quickly like a spider. Vapor, however, is not so keen on letting him get away, and throws a ball of smoke at him. He looks back just in time to see it hit him, causing him to dematerialize and reappear a few feet behind where he was, causing him to fall straight down. He hits the ground and rolls, clawing at the cement as he gets back up.

"I said... I don't have time for this!" His body glows green and he vanishes from sight, appearing behind Vapor. He strikes her back and she dissipates into fog. Jacqui kicks aside a garbage can she landed near and aims her weapon at him to fire, but he waves a hand and creates a shimmering emerald shield in front of him that deflects her rapid-fire onslaught.

She and the saurian make eye contact one last time before he says. "Don't follow me." He turns and leaps high, back onto the wall, crawling to the top.

Vapor, however, is a poor listener, appearing at the top to continue fighting him. Jacqui stands up and reaches for her belt, taking out a grappling hook. "I knew this would eventually come in handy," she says, affixing it to her gauntlet and firing it. The powerful grapnel latches onto the edge of the roof and pulls her up, shooting her up the side of the building. At the top, it disconnects, allowing her to leap up with the momentum of the ascension and deliver a powerful punch to the back of the saurian.

She lands next to Vapor as their green-clad foe rolls forward, skidding to a top on the metal surface, claws on his hands and feet leaving marks in the metal. "You fools," he mutters. Then, in a bizarre moment, he pulls back the leather of his bracer to reveal a silver wristwatch and checks the time. "Now I've lost him for sure."

He turns and runs.

>>3529953

With her target no longer moving, she raises her other arm and fires a volley of rounds at his legs. The saurian turns and creates another shield, causing her bullets to harmlessly bounce off, but he doesn't stop there. Putting his palms flat against the shield, he then strikes it, sending it flying towards them both. Vapor dodges out of the way but Jacqui tries to take it head-on; this proves to be a mistake. The shield crashes into her and sends her flying back, over the edge of the rooftop. Fortunately she grabs the ledge and holds on, then hoists herself back up to look.

She does this in time to see the saurian backflip onto the fallen antenna tower and pause to look at them. Then, he turns and continues running in the opposite direction.

"Oh, hell no," Jacqui says, pulling herself completely up. "Not... giving up... that easily!"

"Vapor, give me a boost!" Jacqui shouts as she runs up to the antenna tower. Vapor puts her hands together and creates a gust of smoke that lifts Jacqui over the wreck. She flips as she soars clear over it, hitting the ground and sprinting as hard and as fast as she can towards the saurian, who jumps off of the edge of the roof and through the skylight of another building. Jacqui follows after him, falling and breaking through the glass before landing roughly. It isn't pretty, and she is covered in numerous small scrapes, but she is back on her feet in an instant and aiming at the saurian, breathing heavily.

He has his back turned to her, and he is standing in front of a broken case filled with strange works of art. In fact, the entire room is---it seems like some kind of private collection, or an art gallery.

"He's already been here," the saurian mutters, turning around with eyes flaring yellow. "Twenty years I've been after him... And you... You!" His fists clench in fury and she prepares to defend herself.

>>3530009

Jacqui blinks and then he's gone. She fires in a wide arc, tearing the place up, but there is no sign of her hitting her target. 'Did he turn invisible? Teleport?' She looks around for any hint of movement; a door opening, someone stepping on glass, but there is nothing. Only silence, and her breathing.

"What the hell..." she mutters.

>>3530034

Vapor wafts in behind her, coming through the skylight as a trail of fog. "Where'd he go?"

"I wish I knew," she says, taking out her scanner. There are some strange patterns in the room, but nothing solid and no trace left behind. "He said he's been after someone for twenty years..." She pauses. "Twenty years... That lines up with the invasion, alright. That's when the saurians started to emerge. But..."

"But what?" Vapor asks.

"Something about all of this doesn't add up..." She looks at the white-haired girl. "Why would a saurian have been chasing someone for twenty years?"

She looks back at the case he was standing in front of. It contains several exotic daggers, mostly ceremonial in nature, from many cultures and time periods. There is a space in the display for another, but it is missing, likely stolen.

'What's this all mean?' she wonders.

Jacqui takes out her phone and starts snapping photos of the scene as Vapor looks around. With her other hand, she takes out her radio and begins to speak. "Cass, come in."

"JB! Where the hell did you guys go?"

"A few buildings down. Some kind of private gallery. Shot the place up, but no sign of the gecko. Can you hone in on my signal?"

"Yeah, we're enroute."

"Briggs out."

As she slides the radio back away, the entrance to the room suddenly bursts open and three figures enter. Jacqui is about to prepare an apology and an explanation until she gets a good look at them. Clad from head to toe in black and red jumpsuits with glowing crimson goggles set into faceless metal masks, she immediately recognizes them from the threat files the SF keep on hand.

Red Dragon mooks.

"Uh... this is all a big misunderstanding," Jacqui begins.

"Kill them," the one in the middle says, and they take out electro-batons.

"Not so much anymore, though," she says, cocking her arms. "Vapor! Company!"

The three Red Dragons charge!

Jacqui aims and fires, but not at them---instead, at a nearby glass case, showering them with shards. This gives Vapor the opportunity to slip past them and whisk them off of their feet with a sweep of her leg once she appears behind them.

One of them gets up and throws his stun baton at Jacqui, who deflects it with her arm. He charges at her with the remaining baton and swings it fiercely, wildly, but predictably and clumsily. She dodges every swing before following up with an uppercut to the man's jaw that dents his mask and sends him falling back into another case.

'Saurians, now Red Dragons... If the Deadly Alliance shows up today, it'll be a new record!'

Vapor blocks an attack from one before another jabs her in the leg with his baton, causing her to let out a cry.

>>3530133

Raising her arms, she fires at them, but they both scatter and take cover behind pillars of marble. Keeping them both suppressed as she fires and walks forward at the same time, each arm pointed at one of them, she prepares to help Vapor when suddenly the one she had thought knocked out pops up behind her. He gets his baton around her throat and pulls, attempting to choke her out and causing her to stop firing on his allies.

Jacqui backs up and grasps at the baton as she tries to keep breathing.

Jacqui tries aiming downwards with one arm, but the Red Dragon is skilled at what he does, keeping control over her as he continues to attempt to choke her out. Vapor moves to help him, but another throws his baton into her back, shocking her and making her fall forward.

>>3530148

With the last of her breath fading and her vision swimming, Jacqui grabs one of her arms by the elbow and pulls, forcing it as far around her side as she can before firing into the man's chest. The baton around her throat drops away and Jacqui whirls around, blasting him with both cannons and absolutely shredding him. The man's chest explodes in a shower of blood as he falls onto a table that had been displaying a miniature city, crushing it beneath his twitching body as he is annihilated by her shower of fire. All told, she likely pumps more rounds than needed into him, but it makes her feel good.

She turns around as the other two Red Dragon come for her, but at that moment, another as-of-yet unbroken section of the skylight shatters from two figures leaping through it, despite there already being two perfectly fine pre-existing holes to jump through. Takeda and his father Kenshi fall, each with their weapons drawn, and when they land they strike their targets in one smooth, beautiful attack.

The two Red Dragons fall back, their chests and throats slashed by the blind samurai and his ninja son.

Kenshi stands up and looks in Jacqui's direction, though not directly at her. "Apologies for dropping by, but we thought we'd cut into the situation."

Takeda facepalms. "Ugh, dad... Seriously?"

Before more dialogue or dad jokes can be made, another door opens and more Red Dragons run in. Kenshi turns to face them, though again does not look directly at them. "Oh, good. I was worried I had missed out on all of the fun."

Takeda's bladed whips emerge and he looks at Jacqui. "You alright?"

"Fine," she insists, rubbing her throat. "Let's finish this."

Takeda and his father rush in, but Jacqui lingers for a moment when she realizes one of her weapons is jammed. She looks up in time to see one of the Red Dragons leap in front of her and kick her in the stomach before following up with his batons to her back. Electricity surges through her and she falls down, whereupon she is kicked once more. After attempting to get back up, a second Red Dragon strikes at her, and soon she is trying to defend herself from two attackers kicking her while she is down.

Vapor takes notice and immediately turns into a cloud of violent wind, blowing onto them both and knocking them back. Nearby, Takeda and Kenshi work together to cut down several of their foes, slicing them where they stand.

>>3530166

As Vapor reforms over her, offering her a hand, Jacqui looks up past at the ceiling and sees a panel open up along the upper wall. A Red Dragon soldier appears in it, armed with a rocket launcher!

"Look out!" she shouts as the rocket is fired into the room, apparently disregarding that their own soldiers are within it. The rocket hits the ground and the four of them are sent flying in different directions; Jacqui lands in a case and breaks several works of art within it as the room fills up with smoke, fire and debris.

She groans as she tries to pick herself up. Just then, another Red Dragon appears in front of her, shoving the stun baton into her midsection. She lets out a painful shout as he continues to press it harder into her, holding her down as she spasms.

The attack stops when a sword from the collection is shoved through his face, and Takeda withdraws it. Kenshi picks himself up nearby, reaching for his sword. The man with the rocket launcher, having reloaded it, fires it again. The samurai faces it and holds his sword aloft, which glows blue, before motioning with his hand in a circle around him. The rocket flies past him, turns around and swings back towards where it came from, following his fluid-like dancing motion. It strikes the man in the hole and explodes, destroying him and that corner of the room entirely.

Jacqui is showered with more debris and chips of paint and wood as Takeda helps her up. "I'm fine," she insists, though his face still shows his concern. She wipes some blood off of her forehead and tries not to limp towards Kenshi. Vapor joins her, putting a worried hand on her shoulder, but she again ignores it and focuses on the situation at hand. "Let's just get out of here."

Cassie and the others bust in at that moment, conveniently providing their means of escape from the burning room.

"Are any of them alive?" Jacqui asks, looking around.

Kenshi kneels down alongside one and rips off his mask with a telekinetic fling. The man is very still, his mouth dripping foam. He speaks in a dark, angry tone. "That monster Daegon has them kill themselves before they ever reveal anything about their organization. It's how they've managed to elude us for so long. Not even the Black Dragon inspires such vicious, fanatical loyalty..."

Jacqui leans up against a pillar, an action that doesn't escape Cassie's notice. She moves in close. "JB? You okay?"

"I'm fine!" Jacqui insists, shrugging off her hand. "C'mon. We need to continue the mission and find those saurians."

Cassie doesn't press her. She turns towards Kenshi and his son and asks, "Do the Red Dragon have some kind of connection with the saurians?"

"We're not sure," Kenshi replies. "I've been tracking this particular cell lately. It would certainly be an odd coincidence if this cell and your saurians appearing in this area were not connected."

"I say we assume there is a connection until we find proof that there isn't," Takeda suggests. "The saurians and the Red Dragon are two of the most secretive groups we've ever come across. They must know of each other."

"Yes, except the Red Dragon doesn't usually make mistakes like the saurians have been making," Kenshi replies. "If they are allies, the Red Dragon might see them as a liability."

"Well, technically the saurians didn't make a mistake, we just have a time traveller on our side," Takeda points out. "Allowed us to learn about them without them ever having a chance to slip up."

"That gives me hope," Kenshi says, standing up and wiping off his blade before sheathing it.

"What about?" Sam asks, gingerly stepping over one of the dead bodies.

"That the Red Dragon will soon make a mistake, and I will find my wife's murderer," Kenshi coldly replies, and Takeda stands silently off to the side.

Within minutes, they have left the building, avoiding locals and any authorities looking into the situation. They regroup nearby.

"We've lost the trail of the saurian that Briggs and Vapor were trailing, so we need to pick it back up," Cassie says. "Let's sweep the area."

Kenshi half-turns towards them. "I will continue searching as well. I will be in touch."

Takeda bows his head. "Thank you for your help, papa-san."

As he takes off, Jacqui rubs her arm, trying to keep the soreness down. She stiffles any outward signs of pain she may be giving off and stays strong, like she knows her father would.

"We'll split into teams again, only this time teams of three," Cassie says. "Just in case."

"I'll go with Sam and Takeda," Jacqui suggests. "Let's try mixing up the groups."

Cassie seems to like the idea, but Vapor's eyes drift down. Jacqui takes note that she seems almost... dejected. As the two teams prepare to split apart, Jacqui breaks away from her two and approaches her. "Andela."

She turns. "Y-yes?"

Jacqui gives Cass a nod that says, 'I'll be a moment,' before taking her off to the side. "What's wrong?"

"N-nothing."

"C'mon. What is it?"

She casts her eyes downwards. "I... felt like I should've been more help to you. I know my powers are some of the strongest here, and yet we lost that saurian, and you got hurt in that last fight..."

"Hey," Jacqui says in a low voice, stepping closer. "This is what we do. Sometimes, we get hurt. Besides, I'm fine."

"Really?" she asks, her green eyes wide.

"Really."

"Because... there's something else. And it, it's..." She squints as words fail her.

"What is it?"

"That saurian... when I was near him, or looking at him, there was something... strange. I felt odd. Like nothing I've ever felt before. It made me... sluggish. Did you feel anything like that?"

"No, why? Sluggish how?"

"My thoughts were hazy and I was reacting slowly... When he kicked me, I felt... like, I was kicked out of my own head for a moment."

Jacqui listens very carefully, taking in every word. "I didn't get that feeling."

"It's... probably nothing," she says. "Some trick."

"...Yeah, you're right. He was some kind of wizard, it must've been a trick."

"Please be careful," Vapor says, nervously rubbing her arm. "I, I know you said you're fine, but... please?"

Jacqui smiles. "I will be. Don't worry about me: we Briggs are built tough like trucks, and we hit as hard as one, too!"

She returns to her group as Vapor leaves with hers.

Takeda takes point and begins leading them back towards the warehouse district. All three of them have their scanners out and are keeping a keen eye on them, though Takeda seems content to talk while he works.

"I know a pretty decent joint not far from here. After this is over, we could grab a bite. Good stuff! I know everyone thinks Japan is all about sushi and ramen, but we've also got---"

Jacqui puts a stop to his rambling with a hand over his mouth. "Quiet. I'm picking something up."

"Me too," Sam says, looking at her screen. Takeda looks at his. Several strange energy signatures can be read nearby, moving in a consistent formation.

As Jacqui drops her hand and takes the lead, Takeda mutters, "Alright, so food later, then."

They come to a warehouse and crouch beneath a window, peering up and over. At first they don't see anything in the dark interior, but then they see them, and it makes their blood run cold. Several figures emerge from the shadows, walking towards the center of the warehouse, clad head-to-toe in thick armor of various colors, with glowing eyes.

"I don't believe it," Takeda says.

"I thought they were all destroyed?" Jacqui whispers.

"Uh, guys? Cue me in?" Sam asks.

"Cyber-ninjas," Takeda replies. "Like our training dummy..."

"The one who killed all of us before Kaito travelled back in time?" Sam asks, her face draining of color. "But... how?"

"I don't know," Jacqui says, her hands nearly bending the metal window sill with how tightly she is gripping it, "But this is a problem. Big time."

Jacqui takes out her radio. "Cage, we've got cyber-ninjas on our position."

"What? Cyber-ninjas? Are you serious? You sure they're not more Red Dragon?"

"Definitely cyber-ninjas."

Within the warehouse, one of them turns and looks directly out the window, his eyes flashing red. They duck down.

"And... apparently they can detect radio signals."

His voice, deep and low and robotic, can be heard from their position. "Three life signatures identified. Outside that window."

"And they can see through walls."

Another one with an identical voice says, "Terminate them."

"And they're hostile!"

Takeda grits his teeth. "And they're fans of movies!"

The three of them get up and run as the window smashes from within. Three flying cyborgs shoot out of the structure and quickly land in front of them, cutting off any escape route. Takeda throws out his arms and extends his bladed whips as Sam takes out her batons. Jacqui smashes her fists together and raises them up high.

The cyborgs stand straight and scan them. "Takahashi Takeda. Jacqueline Briggs. Samantha Stryker. Submit and be destroyed."

Takeda cocks his head. "Don't you mean, 'Submit OR be destroyed?'"

The red one's chest opens, revealing a pod of missiles. "No." He then fires them.

She struggles to get up to her feet, but the cyborg gives no quarter and is on her in an instant, attempting to strike her while she is down. She holds up her gauntlets and blocks a kick and then a punch as the hard-hitting machine pummels at her arms. She drops her arms to her sides as her barrels smoke and she smiles while sighing in reflief.

At least until two more cyborgs drop in from the roof, crashing through and landing in standing positions.

>>3532429

They close in rapidly and attack, striking at her with punches, kicks and powerful chops. She attempts to block, duck and weave, but she is winded and wounded and only getting worse. They are relentless, brutal and efficient, working in tandem; one strikes, then another from a completely different angle, then the first comes in again.

She tries her best, but it is no good. They push her back with devastating blows until she nearly trips over some construction equipment.

Through the haze and the blood in her vision, she reaches for a tool and grabs it, swinging it with sudden fierce power. She smashes it aross the faceplate of one, then clocks the other. They had thought her beaten, but she is filled with newfound energy as she desperately strikes them with the long-handle wrench.

For a moment, she flashes back to when she was working on a truck with her father, and smacked the engine when it wounded start with a wrench. It then immediately started back up and her father laughed and hugged her.

"RRAAAAGH!" Jacqui screams as she brings the wrench down upon the head of one of the cyborgs, smashing it and showering her in bloody oil. Bringing up her boot, she kicks the body away while pulling the wrench free and looking at the other one.

She pauses for only a moment before rushing towards it, ready to take him apart like an old muscle car.

The machine anticipates a high swing, until Jacqui suddenly goes low, sliding on her knees. She slams the wrench against the knee of the machine, bending his leg backwards and causing him to tumble forward.

She gets back up and grips the wrench tightly in both hands and looks down at him as he tries to snap his robotic leg back into position.

>>3532444

Dropping the wrench, she cocks her arms and loads in two new mazines from her side pouches into her gauntlets, slapping them into the sides. As he fixes his leg, she aims down at him and fires, destroying his faceplate and exposing a wire-covered skull.

Jacqui kneels down over the machine and punches into his skull, her augmented fist crushing bone and allowing her to grab some of the wires and rip them out. She throws them behind her as she stands up.

"Damn," a voice from behind says, making Jacqui whirl around in alarm and then relax when she realizes it is only Cassie. "Rough day?"

"Girl, you have no idea."

"I've got some," she says, jogging up with gun in hand. "The others are outside, dealing with more of these things. Come on, we've got to---"

She is cut off by a glob of acid fired between the two of them, landing on the floor nearby and causing it to bubble and hiss. They both aim at its source: a saurian up on the ceiling, along with two others, both of them falling to land on the ground in low stances.

"Looks like we found our saurians," Jacqui says distastefully.

"Did we, or did we stumble onto something bigger?" Cassie replies. "Look, nine o'clock."

Jacqui looks to her left, through a window. Outside, a cyborg can be seen, shooting a flamethrower at something before a saurian leaps upon his back and attacks him, clawing at its armor. Somewhere nearby, an explosion can be heard, along with more gunshots.

"What the hell is going on?" Jacqui mutters.

"Turf war?" Cassie suggests. "Now all we need is the Yakuza to show up and this little rumble in Japan will be complete."

The saurian coming after Jacqui leaps at her, and so she simply reaches up and grasps him by the throat, squeezing hard. Using his momentum, she turns around once and hurls him at Cassie. "Head's up!"

Cassie, having just roundhouse-kicked her own saurian, maintains her twisting motion and performs another, this time with her leg glowing green with shadow power as she delivers a second roundhouse to her flying foe, putting him down on the ground. Once she brings her foot back, she strikes a pose with her fists curled and up, ready for more action.

>>3532462

As Cassie's saurian tries to get back up, Jacqui charges at him and tackles him, but rather than take him to the floor, she scoops him up onto her shoulders and keeps going. Gripping him tightly with her augmented arms, she pulls hard as she bounces him while charging towards a nearby window. Upon reaching it, she bends forward while throwing him off of her, out the window and out of her cares.

A long, sticky tongue reaches out and lashes around her neck. Jacqui gasps and pulls at it, but the sudden force of its pull catches her by surprise as it reels her in.

Cassie sees this happening and rushes in, but the saurian that Jacqui threw grabs her by the leg, wrapping his own tongue around her thigh and causing her to trip and fall forwards, her glasses falling from her face and shattering.

It is a strong muscle and she only cuts halfway through it, but that is enough; green blood spills onto the floor and the saurian unwraps it from her neck, retracting it quickly.

>>3532468

With her other arm, she points her fist at his open maw and locks on with a rocket. "Open wide."

She fires it down his throat and it explodes, showering her in green blood as the headless corpse falls back.

Jacqui breathes hard as Cassie turns around and puts a bullet in the brain of the saurian who had tripped her. She gets up and dusts herself off. "Those were four-hundred and ninety-nine dollar sunglasses, asshole."

Jacqui looks over her shoulder. "I'm currently covered in red, black and green blood, and you're worried about your shades?"

"Well, they were nice."

"So have your dad buy you some new ones!"

"Hey! I'll have you know I make more than enough to buy my own replacements. But yeah, he probably still will." She checks the chamber of her pistol as she approaches. "Today sure took a turn for the worse, eh?"

"You can say that again."

"I'm calling for backup. This place is becoming a warzone. If the Red Dragon show up again and get mixed up in this, it WILL be a warzone. We're still near a civilian population."

"We need to evacuate the people," Jacqui suggests.

"Well, right now keeping the fight here, focused on us is what's best." They both aim their weapons as a cyborg breaks through part of the wall with two saurians on him, flies across the ceiling and crashes through the opposite wall. "...Then again, they're just as interested in each other as us, apparently."

"I'll get the people out of here and try to radio for help too," Jacqui says, running towards one of the openings in the walls. Once she is outside, she sees a group of construction workers huddled behind a series of vehicles and moves to them, urging them to get out of the area. She cannot speak their language, and so only communicates with body language, motioning for them to run.

She holds up her communicator. "Takeda! We've got civilians in the area, and I don't speak Japanese!"

The reply that comes back is fuzzy and he is clearly talking whilst fighting. "I'm a little... busy... at the moment!"

Movement on a nearby rooftop catches her attention as Takeda leaps onto it, duelling with a cyborg armed with pulse blades. Takeda has his own and they clash, at least until the robot is shot in the back with an arrow. Jacqui looks up at another rooftop, where Kung Jin is kneeling, firing arrow after arrow at targets all around, saurian and cyborg alike.

On the ground, Sam and Vapor work as a team, with Sam serving as the lead, tanking hits and getting their enemies into a position for Vapor to take down. A cyborg attempts to crash into Sam from behind, but only ends up crippling itself as if it had flown into a steel wall, crumbling its armor and breaking its spine. She turns around for a brief moment, looking rather surprised, but then continues fighting the cyborg in front of her with her tonfas.

Jacqui helps the group of civilians towards the edge of the combat zone, taking out her radio as she does. "Dragon Base, come in, Dragon Base, do you read? We need backup! Multiple hostiles in the area! Requesting immediate reinforcements!"

She doesn't have time to listen to whatever response she receives as a truck drives past, screaming along the road at top speeds. Jacqui whirls around as the civilians run past, watching the truck strike the building that Kung Jin is atop and explode. She immediately realizes that the truck itself was loaded with explosives, as the force of the blast is far too powerful for a mere vehicle to make. Jin stumbles as the building begins to topple.

Her eyes wide, Jacqui takes out her grapnel and fires it at a nearby billboard, shooting herself upwards. Jin leaps from the rooftop, and halfway towards the ground, sees Jacqui coming and reaches out to her. She grabs him by the arm and holds on tight as the grapnel pulls them both up. Behind them, the building collapses, covering the area in dust and smoke.
>>
>>3533003

Once on the small adjacent rooftop, they shield themselves from the aerial debris, feeling the force of it wash over them. Jin positions his palm upon the ground and swings his staff, summoning a gust of wind with a Shaolin manuever to give them some breathing room, but it doesn't do much.

"What was that?" he asks, coughing.

"A truck," she says, standing up. She squints as she tries to see through the smoke. Their comms are filled with the sounds of battle, and she gets no response. "I can't see anyone."

He strings another arrow. "Those cyborgs have the advantage now. They can see through all of this smoke. We're spread out and outnumbered."

"We need to fall back and regroup," Jacqui says. "Come on!"

They use her grapnel to get back down to ground level, searching for the others. They find Sam trapped under some rubble and Jin uses his staff to pry it off of her while Jacqui helps her up. "You okay?"

"Yeah, I'm not hurt," she insists. "I guess it's good to know that a building falling on me wouldn't kill me, but being stuck under it would..."

Vapor appears nearby, bringing Takeda and Cassie with her. They materialize and join up with them.

"This whole situation has escalated far too quickly for my liking," Cassie says. "Something is going on."

"I can't feel my father's presence," Takeda says, his hand on his forehead. "But I feel something... else..."

Cassie faces him. "What is it?"

He turns towards his left, his eyes narrow. "More trouble."

A truck, just like the one that was driven into the building, pulls up nearby, turning around so that its rear faces the team. It opens, the back sliding up as Red Dragon soldiers begin to pile out of it. Jacqui feels her stomach tighten as a dozen men emerge, led by one man in particular, a swarthy stranger in a black trenchcoat. Within his hands are a pair of hookswords.

"You kids found yourselves in the wrong place at the wrong time," he says, holding up his swords and smiling. "But I'm sure we can fix that."

"Here we go again," Cassie says, preparing to lead her team into battle. But then the smoke in the area begins to clear some more, revealing a group of saurians approaching from the east... and a group of cyborgs approaching from the west.

The four parties all end up staring at each other, each one waiting for the other to make their move.

After a moment more, all four groups run in. Jacqui and Takeda leap over the heads of several foes, landing in front of the Red Dragon leader.

"I do not know you," he says, holding up his hookswords, "but all the same I'll cut you down."

Takeda spits. "But I know you, Mavado. And you know my father, Takahashi Kenshi!"

"Ah, so the brat is all grown up..." He slides the blades of his weapons against each other. "Why don't we send you along to go and see your mother?"

Takeda shouts and dashes forward, with Jacqui on his heels as Mavado prepares to face them both.

As Takeda ducks low, Jacqui recognizes the practiced manuever he is setting up and she fires over him at their enemy. Mavado spins his hookswords in front of him in an attempt to deflect her bullets, but the force and surprise of the attack causes him to become disarmed as they fly from his fingers.

Takeda goes for a swipe with his whips, but Mavado jumps over him, landing between them both.

>>3533143

Not wasting any time, Jacqui's fist shoots straight up into the Red Dragon's face, followed by her kicking his knee, forcing him to fall forward on his other foot. This allows her to bring up her own knee to smash it into his face.

Takeda spins around and delivers an equally devastating roundhouse to the back of Mavado's head, kicking him aside. He looks up at Jacqui and smiles. "Well, that was easy."

A red laser blast hits him from behind, causing him to shout and fall forward. Jacqui catches him and looks up as a new foe enters the brawl, the one who was driving the truck. This one Jacqui knows, for he is a traitor whose face is well-known to the Special Forces: Hsu Hao.

He folds his arms over his glowing chest augmentation, smiling down at her. "Well, well, well... aren't you just the spitting image of your mother's beauty and father's oafishness?"

"You," Jacqui says, helping Takeda back up. "You betrayed the Special Forces! Infiltrated us and blew up a compound!"

"And I'd do it again for the glory of the Red Dragon."

Nearby, Mavado recovers and rolls over to his hookswords to retrieve them. "I'll handle that one," Takeda says to Jacqui, then motions to Hsu Hao and says, "This one's all yours."

Jacqui and Takeda split up to face their opponents as Hsu Hao chuckles. "Overconfident. Just like your father."

"My father is confident because he knows that any problem in his path he can crush." She punches her hands together, then cocks them. "And I'm the same."

Jacqui aims at Hsu Hao's chest, but he thrusts it forwards, the cybernetic implant glowing red-hot before unleashing a beam of energy that knocks Jacqui off her feet. She feels the burn against her own chest, charring part of her chest armor as his laughter echoes in her ears.

She moves to get back up, but then suddenly he is standing over her, reaching down to grapple her. He picks her up and throws her into a nearby dumpster before walking up to it and slamming the lid shut.

He dusts off his hands and chuckles softly to himself.

>>3533250

Jacqui twists into a sitting position, lying atop foul-smelling bags of trash. "That son of a bitch..." She reaches into a pouch and removes several rockets, quickly loading them all onto her gauntlets.

The dumpster lid bursts open and Jacqui pops up, a look of pure rage and indignation on her face. She fires a cluster of missiles at him, using up the last of her stock. Hsu Hao brings up his arms as they impact around him, one of them hitting him and forcing him back a few paces.

Jacqui leaps through the smoke, punching him in the face as hard as she can. Again he stumbles backwards.

>>3533251

Slowly, he turns his head, gazing upon her with glowing red eyes. Jacqui looks at his arms, seeing bits of charred flesh fall off, revealing even further cybernetic augmentation beneath.

"Your father hits harder."

The speed at which he rushes at her takes her by surprise. She attempts to get a few shots off but he tackles her, wraps both arms around her midsection before thrusting her up and over while bending backwards, performing a suplex that smashes her against the stone floor. He lets go and Jacqui crumbles on the spot.

Hsu Hao turns around and kicks her in the stomach. He takes out a pair of strange blades sheathed behind his belt, odd weapons little more than handles with crescent blades connecting both ends with a sun-like pattern.

"I only wish he were here to see this," Hsu Hao says with a sinister smile.

Suddenly, he is lashed from behind by Takeda, who has broken away from his fight with Mavado to help Jacqui. Hsu Hao turns around and begins to duel with him, using his sun-moon blades to deflect further whip attacks as he closes the distance.

On the ground, discarded, Jacqui feels like a small girl again. Long ago, she picked a fight with a group of bullies who were bigger, stronger and far more numerous than she. They surrounded her and beat her, knocking her down again and again. In that time, she recalled the words of her father: "Never stay down if you can get back up."

So, she kept getting up, no matter how hard they knocked her down. Eventually they tired of her and moved on. Jax was upset, because he had felt his advice had pushed her into only hurting herself more. He blamed himself for what had happened to her, but Jacqui didn't. Even though she had been beaten up, she was proud that she never stopped getting back up, because that's what she imagined he would do.

Jacqui is snapped back to the moment as her eyes open and she gasps for breath. All around her, the sounds of battle rage. Her arms feel weak and she is sore all over, but she pushes herself up on shaking limbs until she can stand.

"I'll never... stay... down," she mutters, though her vision is somewhat blurry. Her eyes focus on the sight of Takeda holding off both Hsu Hao and Mavado, mostly defending himself from both attackers.

That's her teammate, her friend, having to do twice the work in a fight because she was lying down on the job! She curls her fingers into fists and works herself back into a state of focused rage. Her heart pounds in her chest as blood pumps in her arms and legs, bringing life and energy back into her limbs.

"Time for round two!" she shouts, charging at Hsu Hao from behind.

With a roar of righteous fury, she blasts Hsu Hao in the hamstrings from behind, forcing him onto his knees. He falls forward, allowing Takeda to focus on facing Mavado.

Jacqui's opponent turns his head, but only in time to see her perfoming a jumping Muay Thai knee from a sprint right into his face, smashing his nose and knocking him to the ground.

>>3533328

Without skipping a beat, Jacqui grabs one of his legs and hoists it up, intent on giving him something to remember her by. Bringing up her boot, she smashes it down upon his leg, breaking it at the knee, causing him to unleash a fierce cry of pain that sends satisfying chills down her spine.

Nearby, a Red Dragon with a rocket launcher fires it near them, blasting the area and causing Jacqui to let go and back up. Mavado takes advantage of the distraction and kicks Takeda in the chest, then throws out a red rope with a clawed hook on the end which latches onto Hsu Hao's prone form. He pulls Hsu Hao towards him as a strange, swirling portal opens nearby, one that resembles a long, coiling spectral dragon. Mavado drags himself and Hsu Hao into it as the remaining Red Dragon escape through it.

Jacqui falls back, wondering why they they suddenly retreated, when she notices that the sky is darkening. The wind picks up speed, rapidly blowing out any fires and sweeping away any lingering smoke or debris. The wind rapidly grows stronger and stronger.

Evidently, the cyborgs realize what is happening and make their retreat as well, all stopping their fights and taking off into the sky with their thrusters. Or at least, they attempt to retreat, as Jacqui and her team look on, a funnel opens up in the sky, moving like a serpent; a living, guided tornado that sucks up the cyborgs, smashing them all against each other and ripping them apart.

The saurians, for their part, scatter, though the sudden storm picks up more than a few of them as well. The New Defenders gather and look on as a figure descends from the heavens: Fujin, the new Protector of Earthrealm.

As he lands, the storm ceases, and the saurians and shattered cyborgs fall from the sky. Fujin pays them no heed as he approaches their team. "I apologize that I did not arrive earlier. My attention was drawn elsewhere."

As Cassie goes to speak with Fujin about the wild situation that they were just swept up in, Jacqui focuses solely upon finding survivors among their enemies. Scanner in hand, she begins to sweep the area, limping softly but ignoring it.

Vapor and Sam come running over to her side. "Jacqui? Jacqui! You're bleeding!" Vapor says.

She and Sam rush in to help, but Jacqui keeps walking. "The remaining saurians can't have gotten too far," she says. "Even if they are camouflaged, we'll pick up their heartbeats and other signs. Come on."

Vapor forces herself in front of her. "Jacqui, stop! The fight's over."

"But the mission isn't."

"We aren't equipped or prepared to keep going on like this!" Vapor tries to talk sense into her. "Our enemies are running. We're wounded and low on supplies; you're nearly out of ammo!" Jacqui looks at her gauntlets and tries to ignore that she is correct. "And you're bleeding!"

Jacqui finally looks down at her side. She isn't sure where she scored this wound; perhaps some shrapnel from that last rocket, but her side is indeed soaked in fresh blood. "Oh, shit," she whispers, suddenly feeling very light-headed.

Sam and Vapor help her when she stumbles, getting her to a sitting position against a telephone pole. As they do, Sam sniff the air. "Anyone else smell that?"

Vapor ignores her as she takes out Jacqui's medical pack and begins taking things out. "Um, I'm not really, uh, trained in this sort of thing..."

"I am," Sam says, taking the kit from her.

At that moment, Cassie runs up, leaving Takeda and Jin with Fujin. "JB!" She kneels alongside her childhood best friend. "Are you alright? How many fingers am I holding up?"

Jacqui raises a finger of her own, the middle one. Cassie smirks. "Well, at least your sparkling personality is in tact." She stands up and continues, "We're bugging out of here. We got hit by two groups we didn't expect to be here and tore up half of Tokyo."

Vapor looks up. "I thought we were outside of---"

"It's a joke," Cassie cuts her off.

"We can't leave yet," Jacqui insists, worry suddenly surging through her. A great nervous fear of disappointing her superiors (but mostly her father) for having not stopped the saurians nor found out why they were here, and also for losing Hsu Hao, races through her. "The mission---"

"Is completely fubar at this point, JB. I'm calling it. We're pulling back to base." She takes out her personal portal generator and prepares to activate it.

As Vapor and Sam help Jacqui to her feet, with Sam ensuring that the new bandaging is holding, Takeda and Jin rejoin them with Fujin walking behind.

"Fujin says that my father was lured away by the Red Dragon before they sprung their ambush on us here," Takeda says to them. "He's going to remain here in Japan and try and continue the hunt."

"Any idea on why they were all here at once?" Jacqui asks.

Fujin steps forward. "There are strange winds blowing... I detect an unnusual presence whose invisible hand is guiding these events, though perhaps not intentionally."

Jacqui gives him a confused look. "What do you mean? Something or someone could have lured them all here?"

"I suspect they were all here for different reasons, but something drew them together. Perhaps to obscure our vision from something else..."

"Another patented Deadly Alliance distraction, perhaps?" Jin offers.

A few more ideas are thrown out, but Jacqui looks at Vapor, who seems to share her thoughts on the matter. Neither of them can get that strange saurian out of their minds, nor stop questioning what his mysterious motives were.

The portal opens and they return to the island. There, they are immediately debriefed and give their reports. Sonya, Johnny and Jax question them thoroughly, taking in all of their intel. Needless to say, none of them are too pleased, but not with the team's performance.

"I thought all the cyborgs were dead or erased from history," Johnny says. "What's up with that?"

"It's possible that Lin Kuei technology could have fallen into other's hands," Jax suggests.

Sonya shakes her head. "The Cyber Initiative was shut down for good more than fifteen years ago and we've stopped all production on our end at Kaito's warning of Triborg becoming a threat. If someone had access to that technology, we would have seen them much earlier. Something smells fishy."

"No, that's just Jacqui," Takeda quips, but a nasty look from her shuts him down. "Sorry."

"The Red Dragon also very rarely make public appearances. If Fujin's hunch is correct, that someone guided all four groups that were present into fighting each other just to cover something else up, then we're dealing with someone exceedingly clever."

Jax sits back. "So, what do we do?"

"Kaito was the one who time-travelled. We should bring him in on this," Johnny says.

"Kaito is unavailable," Sonya replies. She attempts to move on, but Johnny cuts her off.

"Woah, woah, hold on now, what do you mean unavailble? He's on the team, isn't he? What's going on?"

"It's a personal matter and right now it doesn't need to be brought into the open," Sonya says firmly. "Have some discretion, Johnny."

He clearly wants to press the matter, but drops it, folding his arms and pursing his lips in thought.

Jacqui looks over at her father, who catches her gaze but says nothing. She resumes staring at the general.

"Thank you all for your reports. Get whatever medical attention you need; I'm pulling you off of assignments for forty-two hours to recover."

Jacqui stands up. "Ma'am, with all due respect, I can keep going."

Sonya cocks her brow. "Your bravado is noted, Specialist Briggs. Forty-two hour mandatory downtime. Move out."

She wants to press the point, but realizes there is no way to be tactful in doing so. "Yes, ma'am."

Upon leaving the room, she proceeds straight to her own, not stopping to speak with Cass or her father. She strips out of her filthy, bloody and charred uniform and steps into the shower, carefully removing her bandaging and inspecting her numerous bruises and wounds. She winces slightly as she washes blood off of her skin, watching it swirl down into the drain.

She closes her eyes, trying to focus on cleaning, but her mind wanders to other places. She is constantly replaying moments from the mission in her mind, thinking about things she could have done better. While no one died, she should have done better. In spite of all of her effort, she came up short in capturing that saurian or stopping Hsu Hao, though she is pleased at having snapped his leg.

A stray thought passes through her mind. 'Things must've been easier in the old days, when things were handled in the Mortal Kombat tournament.'

She then brushes that thought aside. There were always fights happening around the tournaments, unfair fights and skirmishes and more, not to mention the invasion. The convenience of a one-on-one fight isn't always something one can afford in war, and that's what the team is waging.

With her hair hanging low, she towels off and wraps it around her body. She is about to change when she stops in the middle of her room, pausing for a moment.

"Come out from hiding, Andela."

It was honestly nothing more than a guess. She knows that most of the team were worried about her but that none of them could enter her room... except one. Andela appears, pressing her back up against the wall like a frightened child.

"I'm so sorry," she whispers, her eyes wide.

Jacqui takes a deep breath. "It's fine," she replies, walking over to sit on her bed while wringing out some of her hair. "So, I was right earlier, you do go invisible and watch people."

"I'm... trying to stop. I was worried. What if you had collapsed in the shower, o-or---"

"I thank you, really I do." She takes another deep breath and looks down at the floor where her kicked-off boots lie. "Look, I'm not going to lie and say that I'm perfectly fine, because I'm hurt. But really, I'm okay. I'm tough."

Andela wrings her hands together. "I'm... really sorry I came in here without your permission."

"You've probably done it to everyone else's room too, huh?"

"N-no!"

She fixes her with a knowing look. "Andela..."

"...N-not while they're usually around..."

She smirks. "Well, as long as you're not stealing things." She pauses. "You aren't, are you?"

"No!"

"Good."

Jacqui looks down at her side. Her towel is damp with water and a small amount of blood. "Would you like to help me with this?"

"Your... wound? I don't have training..."

"I heard. We should fix that. Come on, sit."

Slowly, the timid girl moves to sit alongside Jacqui, though not quite too close. The older girl opens a nearby drawer and takes out a fresh medkit and hands it to her, then opens her towel enough so that only her clean wound is showing. Vapor avoid making eye contact as Jacqui guides her through the proper treatment procedures and what from the kit to use. The smaller, white-haired girl is nervous, her fingers trembling as she delicately presses the bandage to the wound.

"More pressure than that," Jacqui says with a smile, putting her hand atop Andela's and pressing more firmly upon it. Andela looks away, hiding behind her stark bangs. "See? I'm fine."

After a moment of silence, Jacqui takes her hand off, allowing hers to slip away. Vapor stands up from the bed and takes a nervous step away. "I wanted to say that I'm sorry."

"Again? There's no need to."

"No, for earlier. For not being better."

Jacqui is about to tell her that she already apologized for that too, but she stops herself and sighs. "Yeah, I felt like I could have done better, too." She manages to chuckle. "I guess we all feel that way on some level, but what can I say, except that hindsight is twenty-twenty? We shouldn't be so hard on ourselves. Besides, you tried your best, right? Me too."

"I really admire that about you, you know," she says, her fingers intertwining and fidgiting. "I see it all the time, your ability to just pick yourself up and keep going. You're stronger than I am. I feel like I would quit a lot earlier than you ever would."

"Hey," Jacqui says, readjusting the towel over the wound, "that's not true. You've got just as much drive as me." She stands up to walk over next to her and put a hand on her shoulder. "You just need to believe in yourself, like I do."

Her green eyes stare up into Jacqui's. "You really mean that?"

"I do."

Vapor is quiet at first, but then reaches up to gently touch the hand on her shoulder. "Jacqui, there's... someting I want to say."

She blinks and tilts her head. "What is it?"

"I... that is, um, I wanted to say, for a while now, that... I, I just..." Words continue to fail her as her eyes begin to dart around. She stutters several more times as her cheeks become more and more flushed beneath her mask.

Her brow arched, Jacqui waits patiently for her to finish, but the conclusion is never reached.

"Nermind," Vapor suddenly insists. "It was n-nothing."

"It doesn't sound like nothing."

The small girl swallows. "I just... wanted to know if we... I mean, you and I could..." She pauses and Jacqui can see a light turn on in her head. "Train together?"

"Well, what do you mean? Sparring? Working out? Running?"

"Whatever you like," Vapor says, taking her hands back to her sides before hiding them behind her back. "That's it. That's all."

Jacqui gies her a reassuring smile. "Yeah, that's fine. I can do for you what Cassie does for Sam. But aren't you a bit out of my league?"

"W-what?"

"You're Lin Kuei. Trained from childhood to fight. At least, that's what I assumed, I don't really know if Sub-Zero runs all that tight a ship."

"I am! We are! He does!" Vapor is quick to blurt out. She coils back somewhat, averting her gaze again. "I just thought we could... train together, is all."

"Okay, calm down," she replies in a warm tone. "What's got you so on edge?"

"I guess I'm just nervous from being in your room, ha..."

"Well, you're welcome any time. Not that I could stop you from getting in if you wanted to," she teases.

"I won't do that anymore! I promise!"

"I'll hold you to that," Jacqui says, taking her over to the door. "I'll meet up with you later to train?"

"Right," Andela says with a nod. "Thank you."

Jacqui opens the door for her and lets her out, closing it behind her. She shakes her head. 'That was strange...'

She gets dressed in some loose-fitting clothing and decides to take things easy for a while, at least until her wound stops hurting.

Deciding to relax and perhaps have a drink in the rec room, Jacqui walks down the stairs and enters it, discovering that its sole other occupant is Takeda. He looks up as she enters.

"Hey," he says, walking over. He is similarly dressed, in a dark hooded jacket and sweat pants. "Same idea, huh?"

"I guess so," she replies. The two of them walk over and sit on the couch.

"How's your side?"

"Not too bad."

"You really pushed yourself out there."

She shrugs. "I got a little carried away at the end."

"Hey, as long as you save it for the bad guys, right?"

She smiles and lies her head back. After a moment, she shakes her head and says, "I can't believe how poorly that all went. Felt like we had no control, that we were completely swept up in something bigger."

"Well, yeah. We were."

"After that first mission today, I felt kind of invincible. Guess I got knocked down a peg."

"Yeah, I know how you felt."

She narrows her eyes. "Because you read my mind?"

"What? No. I meant I can sympathize. I was with you for both."

"Right," she says with a coy smile.

He holds up his hands. "Hey, believe whatever you want to believe."

"I think you know exactly what I believe."

"Okay, sister. I can see there's no winning here. I can't exactly prove that I don't read your mind."

"Alright then, what am I thinking about right now?" Jacqui says, concentrating hard on the first random thought to pop into her head, which in this case is about Frost's hair gel.

He shakes his head. "Nuh-uh. Not gonna do it."

"Suit yourself, but I don't think you're off the hook."

He throws up his hands in mock-exasperation. "Oh, no, whatever shall I do?"

Jacqui hops off the couch and heads towards the fridge. "You can start by picked out a good movie."

He slides over to the movie cabinent and peruses their options. "Which Cage flick should it be today?"

"We've got the real Johnny Cage three rooms over, and you want to watch one of his movies?" Jacqui rolls her eyes. "Sure, just pick one."

"You know, I'm a fan of 7 Poisons myself."

As he puts the movie in and settles back on the couch, Jacqui returns to his side with a few drinks and some popcorn. Just as the movie is about to begin, however, Sheeva enters the room.

"Oh, hey!" Takeda says. "Come join us!"

Sheeva walks over and sits between them, forcing Jacqui to scoot more to her left. The shokan places two of her arms around Takeda's shoulder and digs a large hand into the popcorn bowl.

"I prefer the Ninja Mime film," she says.

Takeda clears his throat. "Well, we could change it, I suppose."

"No. This will do."

As the movie progresses, Jacqui finds herself feeling like something of a third wheel. She can't help but feel strange around Sheeva, particular with Takeda in the room and with her hands around him. She certainly has no qualms with a human and a shokan being in a relationship, but the two of them in particular raise strange feelings within her.

Though she is loathe to admit it, she is somewhat jealous of the shokan; not only for her physical strength, but sinking her fingers into Takeda before anyone else could get the chance. There isn't any denying that she finds him attractive, but...

She sighs and chomps down on some popcorn, trying to get lost in the movie. 'It's like I'm back in highschool,' she thinks distastefully.

Nearby, Sheeva and Takeda share their drink while she whispers something in his ear.

Jacqui bears through the movie in relative silence. Before the credits roll, she stands up and places her empty bottle on the table before leaving. Takeda notices her go and seems like he is about to stand up to go after her to see what is wrong, but Sheeva keeps him sitting as she plays with his hair.

The tropical climate washes over her as she leaves the compound through one of the side entrances to step out onto the beach. Thinking that a walk will help clear her head, she listens to the sounds of the waves rolling onto the shore. There isn't much else for her to think about other than her mentally kicking herself for getting wounded and taken out of active duty, even if only for two days.

Upon coming to a small lagoon, she looks over and spies Cao sitting upon a rock, tossing smaller rocks into the water. He sees her almost instantly and waves her over. Picking her way across the smooth, white sand, she hops up onto the rock and sits alongside him.

"There's a thing in that water," he says, picking up a rock and throwing it. She watches it as it splashes, but sees no sign of any kind of animal. "I saw it earlier. I want to see it again."

"Has it occurred to you that you might be scaring it?"

He gives her a strange look, then throws another rock.

"Well, you know, you could always go in there and take a look."

"I don't do well with water."

"Yes, I remember," she says with a small smile. "I got taken out of active rotation. Got a wound."

He pauses. "It hurt bad?"

"Not too much. The boredom hurts more."

"Tell me about it." He throws another rock. "I don't think I'm really cut out for this whole 'team' thing as much as I thought I would be."

"Are you going to quit?"

"What, and be the first one? No."

"So... if someone else quit, you would?"

"No. Maybe. I don't know. Quitting wouldn't solve the problem. I'm the Kahnzedah. Things can't go back to the way they were before, the way I'm used to."

She's heard this song before. "Stealing to eat, running from the guards, every person in the city wanting you dead..."

"Yeah, well, they still want me dead, they're just much more polite to my face now. All the nobles in that city hate that I came from the streets."

"Kotal knows that it made you strong. Someday, you'll take the perspective that life on the streets gave you and apply it to ruling Outworld."

"Yeah... Kind of makes me wonder who I'll be sharing it with," he says while casting a sidelong glance in her direction.

"I know who. Your sisters, for one."

He chuckles. "Yeah, I guess so."

The two sit in silence for a while. Ever since amicably parting ways in their relationship, they haven't sat alone like this once, always with someone else or a group of the team. Jacqui remains quiet as Cao resumes throwing rocks into the water.

"How was your mission in Nemsai?" she asks, looking to make smalltalk.

"It was alright, I guess. I didn't do much. I was hoping to be the one to finish off those gods but that didn't quite happen. And Kaito was..."

"What?"

"Acting kind of funny. Tired. He went to go hang out with that sphinx and I haven't seen him since."

"General Cage mentioned that he's handling something 'personal.' You think that has anything to do with it?"

"Don't know." He throws another rock. "Hope it isn't anything too serious."

"Me too."

"There is one thing I liked about Nemsai, though."

"Oh? What's that?"

"There's this cute girl with the lower body of a snake and---"

Jacqui pushes him off the rock and onto the sand as she rolls her eyes. She continues on her merry way, leaving him to his rock-throwing.

A short time later, atop the New Defenders base, Jacqui stands atop the roof, leaning on a railing near the helipad, looking out over the water at the setting sun. She hears a series of heavy footfalls approaching her and the cigar smell gives away who it is.

Jax joins her, leaning onto the railing to her right as he takes a puff before putting out his cigar and flicking it over the side. "Hey, kid."

"Hey pop."

"Penny for your thoughts?"

"I'd like to think they're worth more than that," she says with a smile, looking up at him. "What's up?"

"I heard a few things today that didn't sound quite right to me, and I had a private conversation with Cassie." He looks down at her with a frown. "Jacqui, we all want to accomplish the mission, but there's no need to blame yourself if it goes poorly, and there's no need to put yourself at risk when it isn't sound to do so. All you can do is try to handle every situation as best you can as they come and roll with the punches."

"I know dad, but, I can't just stop going if I feel like the job isn't done. It's like you taught me when we were fixing cars, or building that barn---a job half-finished is an unfinished job at the end of the day."

"Yes, I know, but Rome wasn't built in a day baby girl, and neither was that barn. Our whole lives we strive towards goals, and sometimes we meet them and sometimes they don't turn out how we wanted or thought they would. The same goes for a mission. There is an objective, and usually a plan to get there, but not every mission can be a success. That's just life, Jacqui."

She resumes looking out over the ocean. "I always thought you were unbeatable, in any way. Any life goals you missed out on? Someone else beat you to the punch?"

He smirks. "I have a home, a beautiful and loving wife, and one of the greatest daughters a man could ask for, who makes me proud every day. Whatever I lost, I gained so much more than I ever thought I would have, or deserved."

"What about being a hero, dad? Saving the earth? Your career?"

"I listed the important things first," he says, putting a hand on her shoulder and pulling her in for a hug. "You'll get there someday too, Jacqui. Don't be impatient. Everyone's time to shine comes sooner or later."

"Until then, just roll with the punches, right?"

"Thatta girl. Come on. Let's get a pair of steaks, with all the trimmings."

"I thought mom wanted you to stop eating red meat," she says with a bright smile, patting him on the stomach.

"What she doesn't know won't hurt her," he says, pointing a finger at her. He opens the door and they proceed down to the dining facility.

That evening, Jacqui gives her mother, Vera, a call. She attempts to call back home regularly, if not visit, to let her know that she is okay and doing well. While some details of her life on the team are kept personal, she's always very open with the things she is doing and great things the team is accomplishing. Though now, ever since the saurians began kidnapping high-ranking officials, she and much of the world are in a state of fear. Due to the detailed records the saurians possessed on every member of the team, Vera was moved to a military post for temporary safety.

"I know, mom. We're doing everything we can to get them back. We rescued some of them earlier today, in fact. I can't really say who."

"You know I wouldn't leak that kind of information, Jacqui."

"I know, I know. These guys are dangerous, and they know a lot about us. How are you doing at the new place?"

"I'll feel a lot better when I can go back to our home."

"Hopefully soon. Someday all this business will just seem like a bad dream."

"I hope you're right, sweetheart. How's dad?"

"Staying strong, doing the best he can. He's working on a way to better track the saurians down, overseeing the technicians and their work. We think we're close to a breakthrough." Jacqui looks over and out the window, seeing the moon rise over the mountains. "It's getting late mom, and I should get some rest. I'm nursing a wound after all."

"Don't sleep on it," she says.

"I know, mom."

"And be sure to change your bandages."

Jacqui sits on the edge of her bed. "Yes, mom."

"Alright, I'll talk to you soon. I love you."

"Goodbye mom, I love you too."

She hangs up and changes into her sleepwear, then tucks herself into bed. She takes a few moments more than usual to get comfortable due to the ache in her side, but eventually she drifts off into sleep.

It is about three in the morning when they get an alarm. Jacqui sits up in bed, throwing the covers off. Her heart is racing, but she takes a moment to fully wake up and realize the nature of the alarm, from its tone and frequency, indicates an alert in Outworld. Taking less than ten minutes to throw on a tanktop, cargo pants and lace up a pair of boots, she runs out of her room and downstairs.

The remaining members of the team who are on-site are gathering as well. The night shift who operate the command center are scrambling around, trying to verify incoming data. Cassie pushes her way over to Jacqui.

"What's going on?" Jacqui asks her.

"Kotal Kahn activated the alert we gave him. Some kind of trouble in Z'unkahrah."

Cao overhears and approaches them. "What kind of trouble?"

"The alarm is just an alarm. We're not going to know what the problem is until we get there and ask him."
>>
>>3534695

As Cao begins to insist that they travel there immediately, another alarm sounds and a glowing yellow portal opens up in the command center. Guards with rifles take up positions and aim as the team prepares themselves, but Cao gets in front of them and tells them to stand down.

Kotal Kahn, Erron Black and Ruby emerge from the portal, with the former holding the Portal Stone. He hands it to Ruby, who is holding a plush pillow that it rests upon.

"My son," Kotal says, placing his arms behind his back. "I am sorry to trouble you and your team at this late hour."

Cao straightens and bows his head respectfully at Kotal Kahn. "Why was the alarm sounded? Why are you here?"

"I shall explain my actions when General Cage arrives."

The wait is not long; roused from slumber, Sonya enters the command center and heads straight for Kotal Kahn while the rest of the team look on. "Kotal Kahn. To what do we owe the unexpected honor?"

"I am here because of the matter that you discussed with me concerning Reptile."

She places her hands on her hips and wears a troubled look on her face. "This seems like a topic that could have been communicated in private."

"It could have, had he not been freed from my prison mere hours ago. My guards, slain. There is no trace of their killer, nor Reptile."

"Damn," Sonya mutters. She puts a hand to her chin and thinks hard. "I doubt there is a matter of coincidence here."

"I doubt it as well. My refusal to release my prisoner has clearly not hindered your plans to use him to eradicate your saurian infestation."

"I did not arrange for his escape," Sonya protests his implication.

"Either you did not, or someone knew of your desire to have him released and aided you, whether or nor you were party to the plans."

"None of my staff are compromised, either. All saurians have been rooted out of this facility."

"But can you be certain? They were so ingrained into your governments that it would be a trivial matter for them to have compromised any number of soldiers in your military."

"Every communication that leaves this facility is monitored," Sonya says, and Jacqui inwardly gulps when she thinks about calling her mother and telling her about the missions. "No one leaves without proper clearance. I am telling you that my people were not involved in freeing Reptile."

"And yet, on this day that you approach me on the matter, he escapes. Forgive my skepticism."

"I agree with you, Kotal, that there must be a connection, but it is not on our end. A third party must be involved."
>>
>>3534697

"We shall see," Kotal replies, taking hold of the Portal Stone. "Yet perhaps this saurian infestation is greater than you proclaim. This very team and base was created and founded by them... it casts shadows upon those who once seemed allies, forcing them to be seen in a new light. How many actions, missions, people on this team were at their direct behest, working towards goals they wished accomplished?"

Sonya folds her arms. "We are who we have always been, Kotal Kahn."

"I have come to take my son away from this nest of snakes until you have cleaned it fully." Cao's eyes go wide as Kotal creates a portal back to Outworld. He looks at Cao and says, "You will come back to Z'unkahrah now."

"You can't pull a member of this team from his obligations," Sonya says, but Kotal Kahn points a hand at her. Guards across the room remain trained on him, ready to act.

"The Kahnzedah of Outworld served on this team at my permission. I now rescind it. He shall return to court until your saurian menace is dealt with."

"Don't I get a say in this?" Cao asks.

Kotal firmly replies, "You do not."

The room is tense. The relation between Outworld and Earthrealm balances upon a knife's edge, and everyone can feel it.

Jacqui, standing directly behind Cao, remains silent as the thief prince steps forward.

"I do have a say in it," he says defiantly, facing Kotal without a hint of reservation, "and I say that I'm not going anywhere and abandoning my friends."

Kotal's glowing eyes seem to ben enraged, and everyone seems to step back, save for the New Defenders. Were Kotal and Cao to come to blows, they could very well destroy the entire base with just their powers alone, and if the team were forced to intervene it could create a host of diplomatic problems. Erron Black's hand rests casually on his six-shooter, but only a fool would think that his casual rest can be mistaken for not being on high alert.

"And how many of them are your friends, truly? How many of them are as vipers in a house of hens?"

Sheeva steps forward. "Kotal Kahn, you protest too much. We have stricken the vipers from our ranks and are hunting down what remains."

"I shall not be spoken down to on this matter nor any other," Kotal replies, focusing his attention on Cao. "This is where you choose to place your loyalty, my son? Not with your realm, your family?"

"Fighting on this team means I'm fighting for both," Cao insists. "Shao Kahn may be dead, but how long until the saurians see Outworld as another threat?"

Sonya steps in before things escalate further. "Kotal Kahn, I am truly sorry that your guards were murdered. We will do everything in our power to help you find the true culprit."

"Outworld will handle its own affairs," Kotal says, taking out the emergency beacon given to him by the team. Several of these were handed out, such as to Sindel of Edenia and key government officials around Earthrealm, though some of them were compromised. He crushes it in his hand. "I do not forbid your team from Outworld, but I shall not support it until your saurians are dealt with." Looking at Cao specifically, he says nothing further that his glare alone cannot communicate.

He, Ruby and Erron Black step into the portal, sealing it behind them and leaving the room in tense silence. Jacqui looks at Cao, noting his balled fists, but he then relaxes. "I'm going back to bed," he mutters, making his way towards the exit.

With the situation now handled, the general dismisses the team, promising that the Reptile situation will be looked into. With nothing much else to do, Jacqui returns to bed after chatting with Cassie for a moment, sharing the details of her earlier conversation with Cao.

"I'm surprised he didn't leave, since he's the one who talked about quitting the team," Cassie says.

"I'm not. Cao likes to come up with his own ideas, but he likes rejecting authority more. Leaving the team sounded like a good idea until Kotal Kahn told him to. Now simply being on the team is rebellious."

She smirks. "I guess you're right."

They share a small hug before returning to their rooms to sleep.

After a light breakfast, Jacqui sends Andela a message over their communicators to meet up in the gym. Jacqui gets there first, performing a series of warm-up exercises and stretches before Vapor arrives. In contrast to Jacqui's sportswear, Andela is wearing a robe of dark blue and red coloration. Upon seeing it, Jacqui cocks a brow. "You don't want to wear something lighter, maybe less restrictive?"

The girl plays with a strand of white hair and nervously averts her eyes. "I don't really own anything other than this and my uniform, which really should only be used for combat... I mean, I have the bodyglove that goes underneath it, but it gets a little hot in this weather."

Jacqui puts her hands on her hips in thought. "I suppose that could do fine, but you usually don't wear that kind of thing for training, right?" Andela shakes her head. "We should get you some new clothes."

"You mean... shopping?"

"Sure, why not?"

She rubs an arm. "I've never really, um, been shopping before."

"Boy, if I didn't know any better, I'd say that you Lin Kuei lived in an isolated temple in the middle of a frozen wasteland or something."

"But we---" She stops herself. "Oh, I get it. Heheh. Yeah..."

"We should fix that. We could make a day of it! Spend some time together, pick up a few things, maybe grab a bite to eat. What do you think?"

"I'd... like that, a lot."

Jacqui smiles and nods. "We could bring along some of the others, too. Make it a group outing, maybe?"

Andela's smile fades. "Oh... okay. I-if that's what you want."

"Something wrong?" Jacqui asks with an inquisitive look. The girl's body language changes from one moment to the next; Jacqui can hardly get a read on what she truly wants with how reserved she is.

"I don't mind," she says, chewing on her bottom lip.

Vapor nods. "Okay. It sounds kind of fun, actually," she replies with a tiny smile.

"Great! I'll set it up."

After changing into something more casual, requisitioning a personal portal generator and signing out of the base, the three of them travel to Los Angeles, arriving first at Cassie's condo in Venice and taking a striking red convertable Ferari to the mall.

"Did we ever tell you about the time we got stuck in Outworld while driving this car?" Cassie says over her shoulder. "It was when we met Cao. There was a gang of Mad Max rejects, dinosaurs, giant amazon babes in bikinis... Man, what a time that was!"

"Just keep your eyes on the road," Jacqui says, looking back over at Vapor in the backseat. She seems very out of her element. "Don't worry, that won't happen again."

"I'm not worried, it's just that everything around here is very new," she says, looking all around at the east coast architecture and Californian population. "I'm not so sure this was a good idea..."

"Oh, you'll be fine," Cassie assures her. As they pull up to a red light, a group of people suddenly recognize her and begin shouting her name, taking pictures. Cassie shoots them a winning smile beneath her backup pair of shades (priced at four-hundred and ninety-eight dollars) as the light turns green and she pulls away. Jacqui looks back again at Vapor, who is retreating inwardly, clearly not used to public attention of that scale.

After securing a prime parking spot by waving Johnny's name around, they enter the mall. The three of them approach a railing and look down over the central court as Cassie inhales deeply. "Ah, the smell of America: fast food and credit card plastic. Isn't it grand?"

"Y-yeah, it's really... something," Andela replies. Jacqui offers her a shrug.

"So, what's first?" Cassie asks. "We're not just here for sportswear, right?" She whips out a credit card with Johnny's smiling face on it. "'Cause we got a golden ticket right here, baby!"

They waste little time and hit up several stores in rapid succession. Upon learning that Andela has never been shopping and owns a wardrobe consisting of less than four outfits, Cassie flew into a spending fury, determined to correct this crime. Jacqui quickly finds herself carrying several bags, two boxes and a new purse.

Andela walks alongside her. "Do you need help?" she asks.

"Oh, this is nothing," Jacqui laughs it off. "If anything, this is a light day."

Shoes, pants, fashionable shirts, dresses, scarves, jewelry; nothing is left unchecked on Cassie's list. The more they get, however, the more anxious Vapor becomes. "I can't pay you back for any of this... the Lin Kuei don't exactly use money."

"Pay us back?" Cassie laughs at the notion. "You kidding? You deserve it! All the hard work you do and your kickass powers helping us fight baddies is---Oh, 'scuse me."

Jacqui and Andela stop as Cassie takes a selfie with a group of fans who quickly surround her.

"How does she handle that?" Andela asks, hiding behind the boxes Jacqui is holding up.

"Comes from being Hollywood royalty, I suppose," she replies. She'd shrug, but that might risk the topmost box falling. "How about we end the shopping and do something else?"

"I agree," Vapor replies.

When Cassie breaks away, they tell her that this is enough. "What? But we haven't even hit up the next five stores!"

"Cass..." Jacqui says in a strict tone.

"Alright, fine. Let's do something else. Hmm..."

After mentioning Johnny's name, they got in front of several appointments at a local hair salon. It made Andela feel somewhat uneasy, cutting in line like that, but her objection is brief and quiet and only heard by Jacqui. The three of them settle into seats and are quickly tended to by professionals who make light conversation as they work. Cassie is on her phone, evidently livestreaming and allowing her fans to vote on what her new hair should be. Jacqui isn't quite as willing to let other people choose for her, and comes to her own decision.

"I think it's time I ditched these rows," she says, selecting something from a magazine and showing the stylist. As she settles into the chair and lets the stylist work her magic, she looks over upon hearing how much Andela's stylist is raving over her hair.

"This is amazing," the girl says, running her fingers through Vapor's white locks. "I've never felt hair like this! What product do you use?"

"Um... I really don't?"

"This is natural? I'm so jealous! The color is so vibrant and pure! It feels so light, so wispy... It's almost like it's flowing in water..."

Cassie looks up from her phone. "You should see her father's hair, now THAT'S a legendary mane!"

Andela seems to shrink someone into her hair before Jacqui places a friendly hand on her arm in a supportive gesture.

After just over an hour of styling, the three leave the salon with fresh new styles. Cassie, having grown out her hair as of late, is enjoying her new perfectly-cut bangs and shoulder-length blonde hair. Jacqui, for her part, decided on a curly front with a twisting braid in the back. Andela, meanwhile, whose hair is usually somewhat wild and all over the place, is now as smooth as a bank of snow, hanging straight and shining.

"I like it," Jacqui says.

"You... mean it?" Vapor replies.

Before Jacqui can respond, Cassie pulls them both in for a selfie. "Hashtag salon pals!" she says as she snaps the picture. After tagging it, Jacqui feels her phone begin to vibrate with notifications.

"I'm starting to think I need to end my Friendship with how much you tag me," Jacqui says.

"Oh, you love it." Cassie checks her notifications. "Oh-em-gee! I just got a text from an old friend who's here! Hang on, I'm going to go find them and catch up, be RIGHT back!"

Cassie quickly moves off, leaving Andela and Jacqui alone with a lot of bags and boxes, including a new one from the salon with some bottles of shampoo, conditioner and other hair care products.

"She certainly is active today," Andela observes.

"I think she's just happy to have a chance to indulge in her inner valley-girl for a change," Jacqui replies. "Normally she has to be all stoic and professional... Well, maybe half the time, anyway, when she isn't cracking wise."

The two of them stand there in awkward silence for a moment before Vapor brushes a strand of her new haircut back behind an ear. "Thanks for bringing me out here, Jacqui. It's been a lot of fun, really."

"You're welcome. We should do it more often."

"Yeah... I'd really like that," she says in a hopeful tone. She trails off, seemingly about to say something else, but then she changes her mind and the topic. "I like your new haircut, too. It's very pretty."

"Thanks."

Again, it seems like she wants to say something, but holds herself back. Jacqui arches a brow as they walk over to a table and sit down. "Something on your mind?"

"No, nothing," Andela replies, looking out over the crowds of people.

As they wait for Cassie, the two of them settle into conversation over some smoothies from a nearby stand. Though Jacqui asks a few probing questions, Vapor continually dodges them or reflects the conversation back onto her. She asks Jacqui about many things; school, life in Earthrealm, events from growing up, favorite foods and more, but as she answers she begins to realize that she can't ask Andela many of these same questions. Having grown up in the Lin Kuei temple, Vapor lacks much of the normal life experiences that Jacqui has.

She decides to ask something else that everyone can relate to. "How are your parents doing?"

Vapor is very still, then her eyes drift down and she looks sad. Jacqui suddenly realizes that her mother is going through the death of a friend, and helping Kitana deal with it as well. "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to---"

"It's alright," Vapor interrupts her. "I suppose it's only right, you know? I kind of thought I was reaching a breakthrough with my mother and then this happens..."

Jacqui stares hard at her. "What do you mean, it's only right?"

Vapor is very quiet at first, but eventually speaks. "I've been going through... something... and I thought I my mother could help me, because she's part of the reason why I am the way I am. But now she's shut off to the world, completely devoted to helping Kitana avenge Liu Kang, and... it's all my fault."

"Vapor..." She shakes her head, insisting on using her real name. "Andela. It's not your fault that Liu Kang died."

A small tear begins to form in the corner of one of her green eyes. "Yes it is, and I deserve it," she says in a trembling voice. "And I don't deserve any of this. I don't know why I thought Cassie was right when she said I did because I don't. I don't deserve clothes or nice hair or friends like you."

Jacqui reaches over and takes one of her hands. "Woah, hey, it's okay. You can't think like that. We need you."

At that moment, Cassie comes jogging back up. "Hey guys! There's a two-for-one special at the..." She trails off and blinks. "Uh, bad time?"

Jacqui spares her a sympathetic look, then focuses back on the white-haired girl as she hides her face, but is clearly crying.

"Maybe we should get out of here," Cassie suggests, and Jacqui nods. To her credit, Andela doesn't vanish or teleport away, allowing them to get to the car and drive back to Cassie's condo. By the time they arrive, she's calmed down somewhat and the two of them sit across from her in the living room. They wait for her to speak, but she doesn't say a word.

Jacqui looks over at Cassie, frowning slightly. She motions for them both to step out of the room to give the girl some space. Once outside, in the kitchen, they sit at the table. "You know what's up with her?" Cassie asks.

"She blames herself for Liu Kang's death."

"Well, that's just... I mean, the Deadly Alliance are the ones who killed him."

"Yeah, but remember when we busted Wildfire's joint after? I think there's a connection there we're not quite getting."

Cassie thinks for a moment. "The mission report. You read it?"

"I did. Why?"

"It mentions how Quan Chi possessed some kind of new weapon that finished off Liu Kang. Takeda mentioned something to me about it, and mentioned Vapor, but he was being vague."

"She talked about it with him? Something that wasn't in the report?"

"Maybe... Of course, we could ask her ourselves."

"I think I'll go," Jacqui says, pushing back her seat. "I think she does better one-on-one."

"Yeah. I'll uh... I'll get some lunch going or something." She walks over to the fridge as Jacqui reenters the living room. Vapor is where they left her, which is somewhat surprising; usually, when you take your eyes off the girl, she's gone. Jacqui walks over and sits next to her.

"Want to talk?"

Slowly, she nods. "I heard you guys in there."

"Wow. You can do that?"

"I have good hearing. Quan Chi has that weapon because of me. I know... that it wasn't really my fault. My mother told me, and Kaito told me, and Takeda's told me... But it's hard to make yourself believe it when there's this big part of you inside that's screaming at you that it's your fault. I thought I was dealing with it, but, I guess not so much. I'm sorry if I embrassed you."

"You didn't, not at all." Jacqui takes her hand and cups it warmly. "We all have moments of weakness, but that's why we have friends. To help us. You don't have to face any problem by yourself, whether it's a fight or something inside."

"I..." Vapor swallows, and her expression changes. "Thank you."

Jacqui pauses, giving her a curious look. "You do that a lot. You seem like you're going to say one thing and then say something else."

"It's only because I'm stopping myself from saying something stupid."

"It's not stupid if it's the way you feel."

Vapor looks into her eyes and opens her mouth to speak, but once again changes her mind, blinking as she looks away. "It's better this way."

After a short while, they join Cassie for lunch. She's prepared some salad and soup, based on constraints of time and available resources. Both she and Jacqui work to keep conversation flowing normally and ensure Andela is comfortable.

"You know, it just hit me," Jacqui says, setting down her fork. "We did all of this to get you some proper workout clothes and we still haven't done that training."

"Won't it ruin our new hair?" Vapor asks.

"It never lasts for long anyway," Cassie says with a dismissive wave.

"Then why pay so much to get it done? Wouldn't you have to pay just as much every time?"

"Welcome to the life of the rich and famous," is Cassie's reply, followed by a snicker. "Of course, it helps to learn how to do it yourself, or have a friend do it who's better at it than you."

"Like me," Jacqui says with a smug look.

"Yeah, well, until your 'friend' nearly burns down the house by leaving the curling iron plugged in."

"Oh, like it was entirely my fault. You're the one who dragged me away to go play video games in the basement."

Cassie looks over at Vapor. "Old sleepover. Sorry, we were talking about training?"

"I don't mind that we didn't train," Vapor says. "I just wanted to spend some time with friends."

There is a ring at the door and Cassie, apparently expecting it, stands up. "I'll be right back," she says, moving off.

"What's that about?" Andela asks, and Jacqui shrugs, having no idea.

A moment later, Cassie reenters with something behind her back. "Okay, so, I might've been lying earlier when I said I was meeting up with a friend so I could pull off a little surprise."

Jacqui gives a small chortle. "Trying to one-up your old man in the acting department? I guess you had us fooled."

Cassie walks over to Andela and reveals what is behind her back: a tiny white kitten. The smaller girl's hands shoot up to her mouth in surprise as her eyes go wide.

"Go on, take her!" Cassie says, and Vapor reaches out for the tiny creature. Jacqui can see the instant love forming in her eyes as she places the kitten in her lap and pets it, playing with its tiny paws. "Isn't she just the cutest little thing?"

"But... I..." Andela stutters, at a loss for words.

"You don't need to say anything," Cassie insists. "She's all yours." She shoots Jacqui a wink, one that tells her she's holding back a bad or inappropriate joke; given that the last time Vapor brought home a cat it turned out to be an evil mastermind, she doesn't need to be reminded of that right now.

"You're alright, Cage," Jacqui says, lifting a glass in her direction.

Vapor brings the cat up to her face and rubs it against her cheek. She adores the feline, tearfully thanking Cassie.

Moving into the living room, the three of them play with the kitten, picking it up, petting it, dangling things in front of it. When Andela asks what gender the cat is, Cassie says that she believes it is female, but cannot quite remember.

"I think it looks like a girl cat," Jacqui says. "She needs a name."

"That's right!" Cassie says, handing the kitten back to Andela. "What do you like?"

"I don't know," Andela admits, holding the kitten close.

"How about Snowflake?" Jacqui suggests.

"I like that," Vapor says, rubbing the top of the kitten's head. "Snowflake..."

"Awww. Adorable." Cassie snags a quick picture of the moment.

The rest of the evening is spent at Cassie's, talking, playing with Snowflake and casually snacking. Andela really seems to have lightened up considerably and cannot stop enjoying her new pet.

As the two of them look on, Jacqui asks Cassie, "We should probably get back to base, huh?"

"What's the rush? We'll have a slumber party, like the good ol' days."

"If something happens..."

"We're never more than a portal away," Cassie reminds her. "And I'd like to see anyone try to take us here, with dad's home security systems. It's cool."

"I guess you're right."

Andela is receptive to a slumber party; it will give her a chance to try out some of her new sleepwear, though she doesn't quite feel like modeling it despite Cassie's suggestion. As the sun dips low over the horizon, the three of them find themselves in the living room, watching an old movie, strewn about the furniture. Snowflake is fast asleep, curled up in Vapor's arms, and she doesn't seem far behind.

Jacqui and Cassie head to their rooms. Cassie has her own, and the guest room is frequently referred to as Jacqui's with how often she used it in their youth. This leaves the secondary guest room for Vapor, though it seems like she finds the couch comfortable enough.

After curling up under the old, familiar covers, Jacqui falls asleep. It is a short time later when she is roused from slumber by a gentle hand nudging her shoulder. She blinks a few times and rubs her eyes. "Cassie? Is that..." She lets her eyes clear some more as she focused on the moonlight-lit form. "...Andela?"

"I didn't get a chance to say goodnight," she says. "Can I... hug you?"

Jacqui rubs her eyes again. "Yeah, okay..."

Vapor slowly moves in to hug Jacqui, wrapping her arms around her neck and resting her head against hers. Jacqui returns it, feeling somewhat awkward but willing to help the girl feel comfortable.

"Thank you for today," she says softly.

"Anything for a friend."

"...Only a friend?"

The last question is spoken so softly, so gently, that Jacqui thinks at first she has misheard her. But she hasn't; the question, and the implications that come with it, are clear in her mind.

She blinks several times and then begins to pull back. Vapor subtly trembles, staring back at her with eyes that look almost fearful.

Jacqui opens and closes her mouth, thinking about how to reply. She's never considered a relationship with Andela before---in fact, the only girl she ever thought about being with was Cassie, and that was just more for fun than anything else, not a serious loving relationship. While she appreciates the beauty of other women, sometimes even envying them their looks, has she ever actually been attracted to any of them?

And then there is Andela, who is nervous and afraid, looking like she is thinking she just made the biggest mistake in the world. Did she? Jacqui can't say she is offended at her attraction---surprised, definitely---and she certainly doesn't have qualms about dating in the team. She only broke it off with Cao because she couldn't see a future with them together.

Does she reject the girl? Let her down easy? Or does she dare reciprocate her affection? She didn't even know that Andela liked other girls. Can Jacqui say that she does? She'd be a hipocrite if she said no, with Cassie and all---but Cassie is special, isn't she? She doesn't want to lead her on, if it does turn out that she doesn't truly like women who aren't her best friend.

She realizes she's spent far too long overthinking this, leaving the trembling girl to grow more and more anxious about what her response might be. She looks Andela in the eyes and says...

>You're more than my friend. You're my teammate.
>I'm sorry if I gave you the wrong idea, but I'm not that way.

"What would you have me be?"

She seems taken aback somewhat by the question. "I... I don't know."

Sitting up more in the bed and facing her fully, Jacqui takes her hand again, looking down at the paleness of it in the moonlight and feeling its smoothness. She looks back up into her eyes. "What do you want me to be?"

"Nothing," she says breathlessly. "Just... you."

Jacqui has long suspected the girl has never been in a relationship. Growing up in the temple, she only had her friend Zian and Frost, as well as other students, but in a life ruled by discipline and meditation, it is clear that the Lin Kuei hasn't offered them the opportunity to experience such things. Even just speaking with her today so much today has given Jacqui a much clearer picture on just how much the girl has missed out on in life. Zian is experiencing it now with Sam---why shouldn't Andela, with someone she trusts?

But can she be that person for her? The one to guide her, show her what it all means? If not her, then who? 'That's a bit of a silly question, there are plenty of people out there...' She decides to continue the conversation and try to lighten the mood somewhat.

"I have to admit, I didn't think I was your type."

She takes a deep breath, emboldened to admit more. "I like you. I admire you." She averts her gaze. "I understand that this sort of thing isn't considered very normal in Earthrealm, but in Edenia---"

"Normal? It's perfectly normal. I mean, it's not as common as some things, but it's not abnormal." Jacqui clears her throat. "If I'm being honest, I've walked on that side of the line in the past."

Her green eyes flicker back up. "You, uh, indulged?"

"That's a weird word for it, but yes. Where'd you get the idea that it's an indulgence?"

Her shoulders sink somewhat. "My... mother."

"...You wanna talk about that?"

"I do, but I'd like an answer to the first question more," she says, swallowing another nervous lump. A bead of sweat runs down her forehead; Jacqui can nearly hear her heart racing. "So, only f-friends, or...?" Her voice curls up at the end of that last sentence, a hopeful tone. Clearly, discussing it somewhat has made it easier to ask, but she's still horribly nervous.

Jacqui takes another moment to consider, even though she knows it is torment for the other girl to be kept in uncertainty. Whatever choice she makes now, she must commit to, even if it means letting her down, and so she cannot simply give an answer without thinking hard about it...

Jacqui was the one who was initially resistant; Cassie was the one who encouraged it. Later on, Jacqui asked Cassie to back out of the relationship and end their friends-with-benefits thing to focus solely on being with Cao, but that ended as well due to her not seeing a future with him due to him being prince of another realm.

"I... don't know."

Vapor sits back, looking somewhat dejected. "Oh..."

"That's not a 'no', it's an 'I don't know.'" Jacqui frowns and holds tightly onto the other girl's hand. "I've been through a lot lately. I had a relationship that ended not too long ago. I don't know if I'm looking for another one, or what I'm looking for in that department... But I know this: I care about you a lot. I want you to be able to talk with me and count on me. I want you to know that I'll be there for you."

"I see..."

"We shouldn't rush into anything too quickly. We should spend more time together. Maybe learn if what we want is right in front of us, or somewhere else."

She lowers her head. "I like you a lot."

"But you've never been with someone else. It'd be your first. And if I said yes, but inwardly wasn't really sure... I'd hate to hurt you down the line."

"I think I understand," she says after a moment. "I'm sorry that I pushed you into talking about this."

"Don't be," Jacqui says, daring to reach up and cup her cheek. "I think it could be beautiful... but I have to know for certain before I do anything."

She gulps as Jacqui lowers her hand. "So, do you still want to train with me? It won't be awkward, will it?"

"Well, it might be. But that's okay. We'll need to get past awkward things and understand each other more. And after some time, we'll see how things turn out. Remember, this isn't a 'no'. It's an 'I don't know yet.'" She lets go and pulls Andela into a hug. "And even if it does become a 'no', then you'll always still be my friend, no matter what."

Andela returns the hug. "Thank you."

As they part, Jacqui says, "Let's start training together tomorrow. And if you like, we can try a few more places around Earthrealm to visit. I'm partial to Chicago, myself, but Cassie is an east coast girl."

"Will we visit the two of them alone?" Her manner is hopeful.

"Like a date?" Jacqui says, making her blush. "Maybe eventually, but at first I think we should bring others along. I think it'll help you connect more with them. At least until I figure out what I want."

After a moment, she scoots back and invites Andela to lie on the bed with her. She settles down and looks up at the ceiling. "You know what I really want, though?" she asks, and Andela shakes her head. "I want to be a kickboxing champion. Maybe Muay Thai. I'm fighting to defend the world, but I want to be the best in the world, too." She looks over at Andela. "Do you have a dream like that?"

"I've never thought about it like that," she says, then looks at the ceiling. "I can't really compete in sports. It wouldn't be very fair."

Jacqui snickers. "It's hardly fair when I do."

"I honestly don't know what I'd like to do. I don't have dreams that big."

"Sure you do, you just haven't had them yet." Jacqui reaches down to hold her hand between them. "When you figure out what it is, I'll help you reach it, if you'll help me reach mine."

Andela looks over, green eyes meeting brown in the light of the moon, and she smiles. "Deal."

When morning finds them, they are separate but both sound asleep. Cassie stands in the doorway with a cocked brow, wondering if she should wake them up. Rather than embarass them, she decides to sneak into the kitchen and prepare breakfast. When she's done, she calls out to them and they both startle awake.

Jacqui looks over at Andela, who is rubbing her eyes. They both are quiet for a moment.

"Sleep well?" Jacqui asks with a smile.

"Mm-hmm." Vapor softly slips off of the bed and pauses in the doorway. "I'm going to find Snowflake," she says.

Jacqui watches her go, then sits with her arms on her knees, wondering about last night's conversation. 'Just try and act like things are normal,' she thinks. 'Don't make it awkward, especially around Cassie.'

Breakfast, despite efforts to the contrary, is somewhat uncomfortable. Cassie keeps darting her eyes between them both, wondering which of them will speak first. She doesn't suspect anything raunchy happened, but is curious as to why they ended up sleeping on top of the covers alongside each other. As Jacqui quietly eats her pancakes, Andela plays with Snowflake in her lap.

Cassie decides not to press the issue. "So, what's on the agenda for today?" she asks them.

"How about we start that training we were talking about?" Jacqui suggests. "I think I know just the place."

They both seem onboard with the idea, and after breakfast, all three change into gym clothing at Jacqui's behest. Andela is somewhat shy displaying her new top and shorts, more used to her body-covering combat garb. She is eventually coaxed out of the guest room where they can see her for the first time. With the pale skin of her arms and legs contrasted against the dark fabric, along with her white hair pulled back, she cuts quite the figure, lean and thin with an exotic flare.

"Looking good!" Cassie says, nudging Jacqui.

"Yeah..." Jacqui agrees, shooting Cassie an odd look.

Soon enough they are driving, this time with Jacqui behind the wheel. Cassie is in the back, buried in her phone, and Andela is riding shotgun. During the drive, Jacqui takes a casual glance over at Vapor, seeing her white hair flying in the wind. The girl is continually taking in the new sights of this strange land called California, continually interested in what lies beyond the next stop light.

It is a short drive, less than an hour, before they are pulling up a gymnasium and dojo, a combination that is all the rage in the post-invasion era, especially one ran by someone who experienced it firsthand. They park outside and enter. Jacqui's membership card is old, but valid for life, as is Cassie's. At first it seems like they'll need to get one for Andela, but there is a guest clause in the charter and so they are admitted into the gym proper.

Jacqui drops her bag and takes a deep breath. "It's been too long."

All around them are mats, training stations and rings meant for one purpose: fighting, and the instruction of it. Kickboxing and Muay Thai are the sports of choice, along with a few other various martial arts, and the gym is rife with activity as people work out, spar and participate in classes. The walls are decorated with a great many things, but chiefly displayed at the place of honor, in the center of the highest wall where all can see, are a series of world championship belts.

"Do my eyes deceive me, or is that Jacqueline Briggs I see?" The voice is all-too-familiar to Jacqui, who turns to greet her favorite teacher.

"Hello, Kathy."

Kathy Long rushes over to greet both her and Cassie. Though much older now than when she participated in the Mortal Kombat tournament and was eliminated in the first round to none other than Kaito, she is still in fantastic shape. "How long has it been?" she asks, excitedly grabbing their hands. "Look at you two. Practically super heroes these days! Hardly anyone believes me when I tell them that you trained here."

"And we're hoping to do some training today," Jacqui says.
>>
>>3538938

Cassie takes out her phone to snap a quick group selfie, which Kathy enthuses about; she can't figure out social media at all, and if Cassie can bring some of her followers into the gym, the better business will be. "Not that I'm doing badly!" Kathy says with a bright smile.

Cassie promises to tag the place in the post as Jacqui continues, "I know it's been a while since we left off on our lessons, but do you have time today?"

"For an old friend, always," Kathy says, then she sees Andela. "Hello there. I'm Kathy, Kathy Long. Nice to meet you!"

Vapor shakes her hand with a small nod.

"Come on, you can join the class I'm teaching," Kathy suggests.

They join her in one of the nearby rooms, which hosts about twenty people. Kathy's assistant pupil, who had taken over for her while she went to greet her guests, steps back as Kathy takes her place at the head of the class.

"I didn't think there were so many people interested in fighting," Vapor comments as they take places at the rear of the formation.

"Well, not everyone fights for the same reasons as us," Jacqui says. "It's a good way to stay in shape, a great stress relief, not to mention the self-defense applications."

Cassie stretches in place for a moment. "Plus, while not everyone believes in Mortal Kombat or the Elder Gods settling differences with it, plenty of people remember what it was like to be caught unawares and unprepared when the invasion happened. Nobody can deny that. Some people buy guns, some people learn how to punch."

The three of them join in on the lessons, performing a variety of high kicks, knee strikes, defensive movement drills and other valuable warm-ups. When the class really gets going, she starts demonstrating her explosive fighting style, combining fury with focus, using strength and speed to overwhelm an opponent.

After going over the basics of her style, she prepares to demonstrate with her lead pupil, but then instead opts to call out, "Jacqui, if you would please step forward?" Jacqui is surprised, but nonetheless does just that. "Would you mind?"

"Not at all," Jacqui replies, bowing to her. Kathy bows back, and they take up positions.

Jacqui knows this is Kathy's class, and so gives her the proper respect she deserves in teaching it and only gives her the energy she asks of her. Kathy demonstrates a variety of moves, from punch combos to fast kicks to the midsection and face, all the while explaining which moves and techniques are best used to wear an opponent down and which ones are best used for finishing the fight when the moment presents itself. She is a powerful all-around fighter, making good use of every weapon in her arsenal; fists, elbows, knees and legs. Jacqui, for her part, focuses on blocking and, when needed, taking a hit.

She looks out over the group and says, "In a real fight, your opponent won't care about technique, or grace, or how much you've practiced. They want to win just as much as you do, and they want to finish the fight as quickly as possible. That's the mentality you need to have as well; speed, power and the ability to shut your opponent down."

She taps the side of her head. "We're fragile. One good kick can turn the lights off. You can spend your whole life training, but until you actually get in there and put yourself in a situation where you can be up one moment and down the next, you'll never be able to really defend yourself when the time comes. It's like that in fighting and in life." She looks at Jacqui and puts up her fists. "C'mon, Briggs, let's show them a thing or two. First to knockdown."

Taking that as a cue to step things up a notch, Jacqui begins actively fighting back. They dance around each other, throwing out probing strikes, ducking and weaving, focusing solely on each other. Jacqui knows she'd be a fool to underestimate Kathy at her age; she's an explosion waiting to come out. She tests herself carefully against her older and wiser opponent, knowing that for all the monsters and villains she's faced, Kathy's been in more fights than she has.

Jacqui dashes forward with a punch, managing to score a decent hit on Kathy, lunging past her jaw. Knowing that she would maintain her momentum and continue putting pressure on her opponent, Jacqui presses onwards, performing a few rapid-fire walking knees, attempting to jab her stomach.

Kathy, however, quickly adapts, throwing down a palm to block one of her knees while bringing up her foot to straight-kick Jacqui backwards, pushing her away to gain some distance. One separate, her arms are back up and she approaches Jacqui once more.

>>3539204

Jacqui goes for a feint leg kick to the stomach, but Kathy sees through the ruse. As Jacqui strikes with her opposite leg, Kathy slides in, moving right alongside the limb as she twists, smashing the younger girl in the side of the face with a masterfully-executed spinning backfist, one of her signature moves. Jacqui nearly goes down, catching herself on her rear foot as she stumbles back. The class applauds at the manuever.

Kathy brings up a knee with her arms held high in a traditional Muay Thai pose, ready for whatever Jacqui can come back with.

>>3539207

Blinking, Jacqui moves in to employ a series of kicks, trading shins and knees with her opponent. Hours spent in practice against punching bags, Black Dragons and Outworlders has enabled her to put a lot of pressure on Kathy, alternating between her left and right, sometimes striking several times with the same leg at varying heights and angles.

She gets in close and lands a few solid hits before they part ways once more, ready for the next series of blows. From the sidelines, Cassie cheers her on, filming of course. Alongside her, Andela quietly observes, taking in every detail of the bout, seemingly committing it to memory.

Kathy responds with some kicks of her own, shifting the momentum of the fight back onto Jacqui, forcing her to defend herself, but Kathy is experienced and knows her way around a good defense, even one as good as Jacqui's. More than a few kicks get through, knocking her around a little.

After a moment, Kathy leaps back, as does Jacqui. They're both sweaty, staring each other down and low on energy. They both know that the final blow is only seconds away; but who will land the first knockdown?

Jacqui takes a moment, staring deep into Kathy's eyes, waiting. Her foot slowly slides to the left, her hand raises slightly higher, her breathing slows...

They rush forward and clash. Kathy goes high, but Jacqui goes low, stabbing her elbow into Kathy's gut from a downward angle. The older fighter's eyes go wide for a moment before she falls back, landing on her elbows.

Jacqui stands over her, offering a hand. She takes it gratefully and allows herself to be pulled up, whereupon she dusts herself off, bows to Jacqui and is bowed to. The class goes wild with applause at the sportsmanship and spectacle of their sparring match, no more so than Cassie, whooping and hollaring from the sidelines. "That's my girl! Ain't no one steppin' to the Briggs!"

Kathy thanks her for the fantastic duel; a lesson like that is worth half a year's subscriptions to her gym, for both the viewers and Jacqui herself.

Several minutes later, Cassie, Andela and Jacqui are practicing nearby. Andela, more used to using her powers in combat to her advantage, is having difficulty with grabs and throws.

"They don't teach you this kind of stuff in the Lin Kuei?" Cassie asks, observing Jacqui and Andela setting up for another grapple.

"They do, but their training tends to focus more around honing our special abilities," Andela explains. "After all, they offer an advantage that no opponent can equal, other than someone with the same powers."

"It's no wonder you have difficulty with an arm bar when you could just turn into fog and escape from it," Jacqui says. "You don't have to restrict yourself if you don't want to."

"No, I do," she insists. "Plus, we're around people who might become frightened by that sort of thing..."

Jacqui wraps her arms around Andela and kicks her leg out from under her, setting her up for another submission hold. She tries to ignore certain things, like how soft her skin is, or how silken her wispy hair feels when it brushes against her. These distractions didn't exist until last night, when the idea was planted in her head. Out of respect for Andela as an opponent and a teammate, she doesn't let it get to her.

At one point, she looks over and sees a smirking Cassie, sitting with her head in her chin, watching with distinct interest. She blows Jacqui a kiss and a wink, raising her brow in Andela's direction when she isn't looking. It frustrates Jacqui, who realizes that Cassie must have seen them together this morning but clearly got the wrong idea.

After helping Andela to her feet, Jacqui puts her hands on her hips and says, "Ready to give the real thing a shot?"

"Sparring without my powers," Andela says, mostly to herself. She looks up and nods. "I am."

"Alright. I'll take it easy on you until you get the hang of it."

"Don't think I can't take care of myself, even without my powers," Vapor replies, a hint of playfulness coloring her tone.

"Oooh, a bit of sass, JB!" Cassie says, watching from the sidelines. "I didn't know she had it in her!"

Jacqui gets in a ready pose and waits for Andela to do the same, then goes after her. Despite not using her powers, Andela is light on her feet, moving with the grace of an edenian honed by her training in the Lin Kuei. Though she is not trained in kickboxing or Muay Thai, having so intensely studied what she has seen so far she mimics the movements almost perfectly. Jacqui is impressed with how easily she has picked up the style's basics, even after only an afternoon of observation.

A thought lingers in her head that it actually may be more than an afternoon's worth of observation. Last night, Andela said how much she admired her. Perhaps she's been watching from a distance for some time, looking at how she fights. As she squares away with the other girl, she begins to wonder how long she might have felt this way for her. Was it upon their first meeting, or did it build up over time?

Catching her with a kick and a grapple, Jacqui rolls onto the mat, taking Andela with her. She begins to get into a position of control, pinning her down and holding her arms above her head, placing her legs upon hers to control them. Jacqui establishes a position of dominance over her opponent, and it is only when she has her completely pinned that she realizes that Andela has stopped resisting. The girl stares up at her with her shining green eyes and flushed face, her chest heaving. Jacqui holds her grapple, her heart suddenly racing.

She unintentionally wets her lips and says, "And that's how you get your opponent in a... submissive posture."

"I see..." Vapor softly replies, her eyes dancing with light.

Off to the side, Cassie is now sitting with her chin in both hands. "If I had popcorn right now, I'd be chewing it SO hard," she says, interrupting their sudden moment.

Jacqui clears her throat and gets off of her sparring partner, helping her to her feet. She's about to say something to Cassie, a wise remark about her busying herself with a punching bag or something to that effect, when she notices someone entering the gym and look around.

"Kaito," she says in surprise, and Andela and Cassie whip around. Sure enough, Kaito has entered the gym, wearing a black outfit similar to the ones he usually wears, and upon seeing the three of them begins to walk towards them. He is intercepted, however, by Kathy.

"My god, is that you, Kaito? It's been years! How do you look so young? It's great to see---"

She is cut off as he forcefully shoves her out of the way, leaving her with a startled expression. Throughout the brief exchange, he never takes his eyes off of the three of them, Jacqui in particular.

They all stand up and face him as he stops in front of them. They regard him with immediate suspicion, as his body language is all wrong, and everything they know of him tells them that he wouldn't have done that to Kathy.

His gaze is cold and piercing through narrow eyes and a face that seems nearly a scowl. When he speaks, it is with a low tone in a voice that seems like he has something like a cold. "We have unfinished business."

Cassie's hands curl into fists. "I don't know who you are, but you're not Kaito." Jacqui and Andela take a step back, standing more defensively.

He ignores her and continues to stare at Jacqui. "We last met in Japan. You caused me to lose someone I was chasing. Because of it, he now possesses an artifact of incredible power. You are responsible, and you will assist me in correcting this."

Jacqui's eyes widen as she realizes who it is. "The saurian..."

"My name is Otiak, and I am not associated with the saurians you know. I am from another reality."

Their eyes widen in shock. Cassie steps forward. "Otiak... that was the name Kaito used when he was..."

"When he stole my body. That is why I am here now."

"So you stole his?" Cassie accuses.

"This is merely an illusion. I do not know or care where he is. You, however, are here, and you will assist me in tracking down the person you caused me to lose track of."

"And just why should we do that? Or listen to a single thing you have to say?" Jacqui responds. "For all we know, this is a trick."

"The fate of the realms could be at stake. Your duty to their safety dictates that you listen to what I have to say. I shall be outside, where we may speak more freely." His eyes dart around the room. "Not around the ears of others."

Without another word, he turns around and leaves, walking past the bewildered Kathy without so much as a look.

"What's up with him?" Kathy asks.

Taking a moment to assess her response, Cassie says, "That wasn't actually Kaito. Just some guy."

"But it looked just like him," she says.

"Yeah... maybe a brother or distant relative or something," Cassie lies, looking back at the other two. They all share uncertain and wary glances. They're all on edge, as the course of their day has rapidly changed from casual to business, and the kind of business they deal with is rarely good, especially when surrounded by civilians.

Gathering their belongings, Cassie immediately reports the encounter to headquarters. After receiving the information, they are told to stand by in the area. They apologize to Kathy for the rudeness of the sudden guest and for leaving early before heading out the door.

In a nearby alleyway, a portal opens up, from which emerges Takeda, Jin, Frost and Jax. Jacqui looks upon her father, who exits last, with some surprise. "Dad? Did the general send you to oversee this?"

"She didn't. She's not at the base; she's in Outworld with Cao, trying to smooth things over with Kotal Kahn. I've taken control of this situation. Now, where is this saurian?"

"He just told us to meet him outside," Jacqui says as the others establish a security perimeter. "I don't like it."

"Neither do I," Jax says. "We have a storehouse in every major city. If he could track you down here, he can track you down there, so I say we meet him on our turf."

"Is that dangerous? What if something goes wrong; can we risk exposing that storehouse?"

"There is no information inside of it that can reveal the location of any other storehouses, field agents or ways to get to the island," he explains. Taking out his portal generator, he points his metal arm at a nearby wall and activates it. "Let's move, people."

Every hustles through the portal and into the storehouse on the other side. It is a small, unassuming gas station located in a less busy part of town. As they spread out through its interior, some people taking up position around the windows, Jacqui and Cassie follow the senior Briggs into the back room, where there is a secret compartment in the floor with weapons. Cassie arms herself as Jacqui hesitates.

"Something wrong?" he asks his daughter.

"I guess I just feel a little naked without my guantlets," she explains.

He stands up. "You can fight just fine without them, Jacqui. They're not who you are."

She nods and smiles. "Yeah, I remember that time you told me you defeated Motaro without your augs... but to be honest, I thought that story was just cheesy and made up."

He smirks. "I might've exaggerated the beatdown I gave him, but just a little bit."

"Colonel," Jin calls from the other room. "I've got eyes on a snake-man in the parking lot."

"He's already here?!" Cassie says, only half-done loading her weapon. "How?"

"He's got some kind of magic," Jacqui says as she and her father move to the window in the main room. The entire team is looking outside through the window blinds. She immediately recognizes his appearance; the snake-like hood is a dead giveaway.

"He's all alone," Frost says, her eyes darting around. "Unless there are more of them slinking around..."

Jacqui looks over at the cryomancer. "He said he's not associated with the saurians we've been dealing with."

"What, and you just believed him?"

"Orders?" Cassie says, looking to her superior officer to make the call.

"I'll go and talk to him," Jacqui says.

"Like hell you will," Jax replies.

Standing up to her father and looking up at his stern face, she says, "He's here because of me. I chased him in Japan and made him lose someone he was tailing. When he came to speak to us in the gym, he spoke to me. We need him to talk, and we know he'll talk to me. Dad, let me handle this."

Jax seems unconvinced, at least until Vapor steps forward. "Let me go as well. I'll be as a wisp of wind; he'll never know I'm with her. And everyone in here is backup."

Jin, near the window with bow and arrow in hand, says, "I'm watching every move he's making. He pulls one thing, and he'll get an arrow between those yellow eyes."

Jax looks back down at his daughter, considers his options for a moment, then concedes. "Keep your communicator on, turned to maximum. I want to hear everything he's saying and record it."

She nods, doing just that. Nearby, Takeda preps his own communicator, ready to record her transmission. Jacqui looks at Vapor and they share a final glance of mutual understanding before she vanishes into a misty trail that swirls around her, eventually fading from sight.

Jacqui approaches the front door, slowly opening it and walking out. Otiak stands still, tall and imposing even from a distance thanks to his cobra-like hood. He stares at her with his piercing eyes as she draws near. She stops several meters from him, standing in a tense, alert manner.

"Well, I'm here," she calls out to him.

"I don't have time for subterfuge or games," he calls out, and for a moment Jacqui thinks he may realize Vapor is nearby. He approaches her, closing the gap somewhat. "Listen and listen closely. There is a man I have been chasing for twenty years. In all that time, we have never met. I came this close," he says, holding up his fingers with an inch between his thumb and forefinger, "to catching him in Japan. And then you showed up and ruined everything."

Trying to sound detatched, she asks in a confident tone, "Who is he and why should I care?"

"He's a man threatening to tear about the fabric of reality and that's more than enough. I have chased him across several different realities, and now we're here, where it all began."

"What do you mean?"

"This universe has been the centerpoint of three two major convergences between parallel dimensions and two fractures in time. That kind of damage to the weave of existence leaves scars, which can be exploited by those who know how, like me, and the one I am chasing. But where I seek to ensure these scars are not exploited, he is the opposite. He will exploit absolutely everything he gets his hands on until he has what he desires."
>>
>>3540778

She straightens somewhat and clears her throat. "I have been told that there are alternate realities, parallel dimensions, split timelines---whatever you want to call them. I've also been told that the damage from them was undone, and our reality sealed from others."

"Then you were told a lie, but likely a lie born of ignorance. The Elder Gods, for all their power, are not perfect. Small, tiny imperfections in reality get by them; they even elude those who watch over every universe. It is within these shadows cast by beings so vast that a human is like a speck of dust to them that he and I have played our game of cat and mouse. For twenty years we've been waging a two-man war with each other, always hidden. Now he's getting bolder the nearer he draws to his goal. Now, he is powerful enough that he feels he no longer needs to hide. He's brought our game out into the open, and now you're involved, which has only been beneficial for him, since now I am here likely wasting my time explaining all of this to you when he is out there, ever moving closer towards his next goal."

Jacqui's brow furrows as she puts her hands on her hips, trying to think of the most pertinent questions to ask. "Alright, then, what is his goal?"

"What else? Power. He's been amassing it through the use of artifacts of magic from various realities."

She holds up a hand. "I was told that taking something or someone from one reality and putting it in another could destroy both of them."

His yellow eyes narrow further, as though he is getting impatient. "If I were to take a rock from one universe and place it in another, would that annihilate them both? The complexities involved are far greater than can be easily explained. Yes, on principle, the rock does not belong, but the hole it leaves is so small as to be negligible for millenia until it becomes an actual problem. If you want to destroy a set of universes, you smash them together by transposing many things over a short period of time. That's not what he is doing."

"So then what is he doing, exactly?"

"Building a collection of powerful items to use when the time is right to take over his home reality: my home reality. And to do that, he has travelled here and to several other universes to find what he seeks. The souls of powerful warriors, weapons of strong enchantment, potions of ingredients that could only be made under certain conditions unique to specific timelines. He's amassed a horde of treasures spanning dimensions, and very soon he will use them to conquer my reality."

"Do you have any proof?"

"Proof?" he repeats her word as though it is without meaning. "My very presence is proof. Kaito must have told you about his time in my body. Who else knows of it?"

"I don't understand, I thought he made up the name Otiak, but here you are, a real person?"

"If you must know, Otiak is not my true name. I'm adopting it for the purposes of my interractions with you, since this is the home universe of the one who used my body and gave me that name."

"But why? Why not just tell us who you truly are?"

"Using the name Otiak helped me get this audience with you, and the less you know of me, the better. We were never supposed to meet."

Jacqui stares at him for a moment, then sighs and relents. "Fine. You want our help. What are we supposed to do?"

"There is an item in the possession of Shang Tsung that my foe cannot resist. We will use it to lure him into a trap, and I shall finally face him after twenty years."

"In all that time, you never thought to bait him out like this?"

"I have, but this time I will not be the one to do it. You will. I will be elsewhere, and ensure that he knows I am there. He knows of me just as well as I know him. He has laid traps for me in the past, and I have done the same. Never have we met yet we are so familiar with each other that I know this plan will work."

"If he knows as much of you as you say he does, then what makes this plan any different? How will he not see through it?"

"Because I know how to trick him. This is irrelevent and can go back and forth endlessly---'If he knows you know how to trick him, how will it work?' It will work because I know it will work. You will do your part to help me stop him and then I shall go about the work of returning the items to their original places across the universes he stole them from and set things right."

"Who is this enemy, and what does he look like?"

"He goes by the name Kollector and is one of the naknada."

"...I'm sorry, what?"

"The naknada," he says again, pausing for recognition from her that does not come. "Surely you have them in your timeline? Blue skin, six arms, notoriously corrupt and vile, ruled by greed? They look like hairless goblins and scamper about like spiders."

She shakes her head. "Not ringing any bells."

"I see..." He brings up a clawed hand and rubs at the chin of his mask. "Perhaps they do not exist here... It matters little. He has amassed relics of great power and cannot resist a prize as tempting as the one we will bait him with."

"What is this item? How do you know that Shang Tsung has it?"

"Because he would not allow anyone else to have it. The Tao Te Zhan. That book contains a blueprint of your very reality and the destiny of all within for those who are able to discern its riddles and prophecies. With such a tome, he would vastly shorten his search for powerful relics to aid him in his quest."

Jacqui thinks for a moment, remembering that Old Man Tsung is often seen with a book under one arm. "And you think he will agree to this plan?"

"Not likely. You may have to acquire it by force."

"Our team is on something of a truce with Shang Tsung. We don't mess with him and he doesn't mess with us."

"Then you are fools to keep a viper such as that in your midst. Better to kill him and take the book off of his body than continue to think you can be allies with him."

"Our Shang Tsung might not be as untrustworthy as your own," she points out.

"You would not defend him if you knew all that he has done, or likely plans to do. The Kollector will come if you bring that book off of Shang Tsung's island. He has ways of sniffing out artifacts of great power, and that book will be like a beacon to him. He will be compelled to steal it. Now, listen very carefully to me: you are going to let him."

"Say what?" Jacqui replies. "You just went on and on about how dangerous this guy is, and you want us to just hand it over?"

"Not hand it over. Let him steal it. He must think that you are not giving it to him; he will know a trap is afoot. He must take it himself."

"And just how in the hell does that make sense?"

"Because when he takes it, I will know where he is going. I have a spell which will allow me to track the Tao Te Zhan; that is how I know it is in the possession of Shang Tsung. As a sorcerer, I am intimately familiar with the magic of that book. He will bring it back to his lair, unknowingly leading me right to him. There, I shall finally end him, cornered in the place he thought unreachable."

"And if we help you stop this person, you'll go back to your alternate dimension, seal the hole between our realities, and act as if we've never interacted in the first place, right?"

His answer is short, simple and blunt. "Yes."

Oooor we could bait the Kollector into going after the Tao Te Zhan while Shang Tsung still has it and let it try to steal the book himself. Then Shang Tsung and the rest of us kick his ass and call it a day. You try talking to a pissy, crochety old fart of a sorcerer and say "hey, I need your single most prized, most valuable and most powerful relic that could unravel reality if misused so some schmuck from another reality can steal it from us just to bait him into an ambush that may or may not work if he figures the damn book out" and let me know how that works out for you. Shang Tsung may be annoying and selfish, but he's not stupid, and I'd bet money he's got a better plan than you.

"I'll have to discuss it with my superiors," she says, taking a moment to look him up and down. "You weren't the only thing we ran into in Japan, you know. There were the other saurians, the Red Dragons and cyborgs, which we thought were all destroyed."

"I don't know or care about any of that. Those are the affairs of your universe and I am not privy to all of its peculiarities."

He speaks openly and quickly, but the rudeness of his tone leaves her suspicious. "You're very deflective, you know that?"

"I am attempting to stop an individual from amassing enough power to annihilate everything in his path. Forgive my belief that it holds precedence over your problems."

She folds her arms. "When you ask someone for help, you shouldn't be so hostile. If you want us to actually be on your side and support you, then we need good reason to. We're good people but we have difficulty trusting strangers until they prove themselves. And forgive me for saying, your story is wilder than most."

"If you will not assist me, the ramifications will be grave."

"Look at it from my perspective. How do I not know this is all a trick, an elaborate ruse, to get your hands on the Tao Te Zhan? If this person, the 'Kollector' exists, how do I know you're not on his side?"

He is silent for several moments. "I do not carry proof with me. I have only my word."

"Then why not compromise and come up with a plan with us? What if we baited the Kollector into stealing the book while Shang Tsung still has it, and---"

"He will not take the book while it is in his hands. Furthermore, he will not risk going to his island."

"Why?"

"He knows Shang Tsung will hide behind your team, and the Tao Te Zhan cannot be pried from the hands of a sorcerer who does not wish it separated from them. Even if the Kollector were to attack Shang Tsung, he could cast the book into the depths of the Netherrealm, or lose it somewhere in the furies between realms, and then the effort would be for nothing. He will only come for the book if you take it away from its owner and off of his island."

"I just don't think that Shang Tsung will part ways with it."

"So kill him."

"Alright, there you go again, jumping to ends more extreme than we are willing to go to. Shang Tsung is an old man and, as odd as it sounds, our neighbor. We don't murder our neighbors."

"But you'll murder saurians, members of the Red Dragon and cyborgs just fine and with a clear conscience."

"They attack us first. That's not murder. And I'll have you know I go out of my way to not kill saurians on missions when I can."

"How very noble. Do you know that Shang Tsung wouldn't hesitate to kill you or anyone on your team if he could benefit from it in some manner?"

"As it stands, I know Shang Tsung better than you. You're still a stranger."
>>
>>3542943

"Enough of this," he says, waving his hand. "I have said what I have come to say. If you are wise, you will assist me in ending the Kollector's life once and for all. If you do not, the threat he poses to the realms will only grow stronger. Perhaps very soon you may come to regret not taking my advice when you had the chance."

"As I said, I will discuss it with my superiors," she says firmly.

"Take the book off of the island," he tells her. "Let it be taken by him. I will handle the rest."

"Why don't you tell all of this to Shang Tsung himself?"

Jacqui nearly takes a step back when she sees his reaction as his hands curl into fists, his eyes razor-thin and the intake of his breath just as sharp.

"I will not be in the same room as that vile serpent," he says with such hate and malice to nearly shake her.

"But why? Even if you hate the Shang Tsung in your universe, he isn't the one that's here."

"It runs far deeper than that," he mutters. "If I go after him for that book, I will kill him. I would like to do as little damage to your reality as I can. I can return a stolen item. Lives are somewhat more difficult to replace."

"You're nearly impossible to work with, you know that? You won't concede on a single thing. You're stubborn, but you're the one asking us for help."

"I had thought that you would understand that in our line of work, the greater good is all that matters."

"And what line of work is that?"

"Defending the realms," he says, closing his eyes and shaking his head. "Not just your realms, but ALL realms. I don't care if you think me rude or stubborn, I do what I do to protect my home and yours."

"Yeah, well... sometimes, if all you can focus on is the greater good, the small bad things slip by and begin to pile up."

"I find that to be a simplistic point of view. But very well. I will make you another offer."

She straightens and maintains a confident appearance. "I'm listening."

"I have always made it my priority to not use my knowledge to influence other realities. It can be dangerous. But if you help me stop the Kollector, I will impart what I know of your saurians from the history of my own reality. I know where their queen lairs in your realm... for she was my mother in my own."

Jacqui's brow rises. "You'd sell out your own mother?"

"It's like you said... she isn't my mother."

"But you won't be in the room with Shang Tsung, despite him not being the one you hate?"

He looks away. "Yes. That's right." He looks back at her. "I don't... hate my mother. I have no great love for her, either. What happens here means nothing to me. The course of your history is already vastly different from the one I grew up in."

She studies him intently. This is the first bit of vulnerability he has shown, and it is observable even from his body language. Over the course of this conversation an idea of him and his mentality has been constructed in her mind, and this little bit of information casts it in a new shadow: he is lonely. He doesn't trust others easily, and he works by himself.

"It's not just about Shang Tsung, is it," she says, her tone softening. "You being here, talking to me, is making you uncomfortable and on edge, isn't it?"

"I didn't want to make contact with anyone in this reality or any other," he admits, "but I remind you that you were the one who ran into me."

Jacqui takes a moment before replying to him. "We'll consider your deal; helping you trap him in exchange for information."

He nods, then turns to leave.

She holds up a hand. "Wait! How long do we have before our window of opportunity closes?"

"Not long," he replies over his shoulder. "Soon enough, he'll have what he needs from this reality."

"Do we have a means of contacting you?"

"Just play your part, and I'll play mine." With that, he vanishes from sight, either turning invisible or teleporting away; Jacqui cannot tell for certain. Slowly, after ensuring that he is gone with a pregnant pause, she turns and walks back towards the gas station. Once inside, she looks at the others as Vapor appears alongside her.

"We cannot," Vapor insists in a desperate tone, the sudden ferocity of which surprises Jacqui and the others. "We cannot give him or anyone else that book!"

Frost raises a finger. "Well, hang on a second, what about that guy he was talking about?"

"Sounds like a problem to me," Takeda agrees.

Vapor stares at her like she is mad. "The last time an artifact slipped into the wrong hands, Liu Kang DIED!"

That silences the entire room. Jacqui looks at Vapor, seeing how shaken she is. She must have been dying to object all the while during the conversation, but held herself back to maintain her cover just in case. She looks over at her father, who has a strange look on his face, a look of conflict and deep thought, like he is being forced to choose between two distasteful options.

"I don't like any of this," Jin mutters. "Alternate realities... I thought all of this would have ended when Havik was killed by Fox. The stories he told us about our alternate lives, how different they could be, were crazy. If he weren't one of us, I wouldn't believe him."

"Does that mean you don't believe this one?" Cassie asks him.

"Well, it's hard to say." He leans on his staff. "We know that cross-universal travel is possible, and he did know a good chunk of things it seems like he shouldn't, like when Kaito took his body for a joy ride which we all know was a secret he only shared with us. Damning as it may be, his story is consistent. He's just kind of an ass."

"Twenty years spent chasing a guy you've never seen would make me a little salty too," Cassie says with a sideways frown.

Jacqui approaches her father, putting a hand on his shoulder. "What do you think, sir?"

Jax looks at her, then resumes staring at the wall. "I think I'm unqualified for this kind of thing. Kaito is the one who has the most experience with parallel dimensions. We need him to listen to the recording."

"You're not actually considering going through with the plan, are you?" Vapor asks. "We can't risk that book falling into the wrong hands! What if, what if that saurian out there is just playing us for fools? Or working for the Deadly Alliance and just saying he's working towards the 'greater good'?"

Cassie folds her arms. "I think a servant of the Enemy would look fairer and feel fouler..."

Vapor turns towards her. "What?"

"I'm just saying, if he were a bad guy, would he really try and convince us in his saurian appearance? All King Cobra'd up with his monster face and claws and stuff? He knows we've been fighting the saurians, so we already distrust him on appearance alone, but he didn't try to hide it."

"Except for when he looked like Kaito," Jacqui points out.

"Yeah, but that was at the gym, for the benefit of the civilians who were present." Cassie kicks off the countertop she was sitting on and walks towards Jacqui and her father. "If he were evil and trying to convince us to do something bad, wouldn't he look like an ally to make us trust him more? Or take the appearance of a loved one or authority figure or something?"

"That's a decent point," Jin agrees. "He was being rather straightforward in some respects, but there's a lot he's not telling us... I suspect that's because he feels that the less we know, the better, and the less he messes with our reality the better."

"He's still willing to trade information on the saurian queen," Frost reminds them.

"Yeah, but that wasn't his opening offer. He only got there after Jacqui wore him down," Jin replies.

"We can't know if he even has that information!" Vapor insists. "We should have had him give it to us so we know he's legitimate, and even then I wouldn't want to give him the book."

"You'd take his information and not even pay him back?" Frost says with a cocked brow. "That's cold."

Vapor looks at her with a mean look in her eyes. "That means a lot coming from a former street thief."

"What did you just say?" Frost says, her eyes flared in anger. She begins to walk towards her.

"That's enough," Jax says, moving to stand between them. Jacqui puts a hand on Vapor's arm to tell her to calm down. "We're reporting back to base. This recording needs to be heard by the general, Kaito and Johnny as well." Looking at Vapor specifically, he adds, "We're not going to make any snap judgments, and our policy has always been to not interfere with Shang Tsung. We're not going to change it on a whim."

As Takeda preps the portal generator, Jacqui's hand moves up to Andela's shoulder and they share a meaningful look. She understands where the girl is coming from; giving the book away could have unforeseen complications. There's still a part of her that blames herself for Liu Kang's murder. Nearby, Cassie explains to Jax that they'll need to swing by her place to pick up their belongings and Snowflake before returning to base; Jax approves, but tells them not to take too long.

Once they are back, Jacqui walks into the guest room at Cassie's condo, closing the door behind her. She sits on the edge of the bed and takes a deep breath. While it didn't devolve into conflict, speaking with Otiak was somewhat exhausting in of itself, likely due to reminding her that even on an off day, the battle isn't over. She thought that enemies in her own reality were numerous enough, but enemies from different times and dimensions as well?

She rubs her forehead and lies upon the bed, staring up at the ceiling, wondering if it will ever end. 'Probably not,' she thinks. 'There's always going to be someone out there, even if we took all of them out in this timeline, how long until someone from another universe makes trouble?'

Problems from other realities did not become a factor in her mind until now. The only comfort she finds in the face of countless potential enemies is the fact that cross-universal travel is dangerous and many people exist who try to police it. If Otiak is being honest, he's one of them. 'Kaito also mentioned that one guy, what's his name? ...Ryan? What's he make of this?'

After a few minutes of lying down with what feels like a painless headache, there is a soft knock at the door. "Come in," Jacqui says, and the door cracks open a hair. Vapor slips into the room, appearing alongside the bed.

"Jacqui? Are you alright?"

"Just tired," she replies. "Mentally. It's a lot to wrap my head around, and I've been trying not to think about it too hard since Fox and Kaito told us about their treks across universes. Infinite worlds, infinite versions of ourselves... or maybe not infinite, who knows. But a lot. More than I can imagine."

"I know. I can't quite imagine it, either." She nervously sits on the edge of the bed after hesitating for a moment. "What if there was a time where my father never met my mother? Or one of them had died beforehand? It's... strange to think about a time like that could exist, right now."

"I was really enjoying our day, too."

"Me too." She looks over her shoulder, down at her. "We don't get a lot of them like this. Before Otiak showed up, I mean. I really liked yesterday, too!"

"Yeah, it was a great time," she says. After a moment, she reaches up and gently touched Andela's arm. "Hey..." She means to continue speaking, but the words become jumbled in her head and she loses her train of thought, unsure of what she is even feeling and unconfident in her ability to convey it.

"Yes?"

Sitting up, Jacqui slowly wraps her arms around Andela, pulling her in for a warm hug. The other girl returns it, resting her head on Jacqui's shoulder. Jacqui softly nuzzles her head into the crook of Andela's neck, feeling her smooth skin and enjoying the light tickling sensation of her flowing hair. There aren't any words exchanged for a moment as the two simply enjoy each other's company, but eventually Jacqui speaks.
>>
>>3548560

"I hope we find some time soon to spend together. I still feel like I need time to think about things. About 'us.' But... I like the way it sounds."

She feels Vapor nodding against her skin. They hold onto each other for a while longer yet, enjoying the connection and the warmth it brings. They're in this together, and there's a comforting feeling in that for them both.

Together, they return to the base, along with Cassie and Snowflake, to prepare for their next assignment, and Jacqui inwardly accepts that there will always be a next assignment; another mission will always be just around the corner. Vigilance is the price they pay to counter the constant lurking threat of their enemies, and the pain their enemies inflict is what they must endure, but at least they are not enduring it alone. She feels pity for Otiak, who chooses to keep himself apart and face such things by himself.

Looking at Cassie and Andela, and once back at the base her father and her other teammates, Jacqui smiles and thinks that she is very lucky to have the such people to help shoulder her burdens. She squeezes Andela's hand gently, an action that does not escape Cassie's notice. She creates a little heart with her fingers, framing them both in her vision before Jacqui shoos her away.

The three of them rejoin the others, ready for whatever may come next.

I'll call it there for this thread; I think I've covered all of the ground I wanted to as far as character development and events are concerned.

As always, thanks to everyone who participated and played, you make everything happen. I hope you liked this thread!

The next Team Member thread will be Kung Jin, but the next thread itself will be our 100th thread for the quest! So, I feel obligated to make it special in some way. I'll figure out how at the time.

100 threads, can you believe it? We've come so far, and still have more to go! The future's looking bright, I'd say. I'll see you next time!

In a dark cell beneath Kotal Kahn's palace, in a prison that once formed the center of Shao Kahn's dungeon, a lone figure lies bound by thick chains. His mouth is kept shut by an iron mask, more akin to a muzzle, and his arms and legs are both kept in place by solid, weighty chains. His mask is only removed for when he is fed scraps of food by the cruel guards.

There was a time not so long ago when he was the one who threw prisoners into this place, when he was an enforcer of Kotal Kahn's will and laws. His relationship with Kotal Kahn goes back far, one of the few people he would dare call a friend, and that relationship is both the reason he was a member of the new emperor's court and why he is alive now.

Reptile---Syzoth, as he is truly known---dreamt bigger than his place at Kotal Kahn's side. He dreamt of becoming something more, much more, and he studied the texts of Ruby's library in order to do so. Reading came difficult to him, but he taught himself. He is more clever than most give him credit, yet this did not stop him from making a foolish mistake. He gave his body to the spirit of the last great dragon egg, which contained the soul of Onaga, the Dragon King. He believed it would give him the power of a dragon; all it did was give Onaga a host body.

When Onaga was defeated by the combined power of Kotal Kahn and Cao---That accursed thief-child, now a prince! With the power of the slain Shao Kahn!---he awoke from his slumber only to find himself in chains for his treachery. Kotal Kahn's notion of mercy: a dark dungeon, tucked away, nearly forgotten except by the guards tasked to feed him.

It has been like this for a long time. He knows not how long. The days have become endless; the darkness of the dungeon is mind-numbing. Shadows have begun to take upon shapes of their own, laughing at him, taunting him with their freedom outside of his cell. He hears voices, the voices of his masters past and his people, calling him a miserable failure. All of his work to revitalize his people, what has it resulted in? A wretched caste of sub-optimal half-witted lizardfolk mutants and his own captivity.

All he wanted was to bring his people back, to have the strength to bring them out of legend and see Zaterra reborn. But even the other last members of his kind rejected him; Khameleon, perhaps the only other potential mate he could hope for, had nothing but disdain and disgust in regards to him. How could she? Does she not realize they are the last of their kind, and that standards must appreciably lower? He is a cunning warrior, a servant to some of the most powerful beings in Outworld's history!

Fate has cursed him again and again and again. What's worse, is that in this place, cold and dark and separated from nearly all contact, he has begun to feel the primal gnawing of his ancient reptilian bloodline resurface. His kind, when isolated from other saurians, begin to devolve into their lesser selves. He has felt it---his mind slipping, his body changing. He is becoming something else, something feral, and soon enough he will not even know himself. It is the ultimate torment, a fate worse than death, and one that Kotal has unknowingly ensured.

Life has been nothing but cruel to him, and soon he will hardly even know what the word 'cruel' means. He will only know things as an animal knows them. His hopes and dreams of his people's rebirth, to see his mythical home realm, the joy of having a family of his own... He will be denied all of these things, forever. He will not even be allowed to dream of them.

His yellows eyes slide open. There is a noise outside of his cell. It is not that of the guards, for he knows that sound very well. It is something else. At first he thinks it may be nothing more than another illusion conjured by his mad mind, but then he smells something unique, something that immediately triggers every sensory nerve in his brain: the scent of a fellow raptor.

A figure appears in front of his cell. His vision in the dark is excellent, but he knows not this saurian by appearance or scent. He is a tall, lean figure, with a strange hood---it resembles a regal cobra. The stranger approaches him and looks upon his kneeling form, arms held aloft by chains and spittle dripping from his mask.

"Look at you," he mutters in their tongue. "Imagine my disappointment."

Reptile's eyes widen. Another saurian, come to mock and step upon him, just like all of the others. It nearly drives him into a fury, but this is the first saurian he has had a chance to be in the presence of in so long---the sensation is nearly overwhelming.

After studying the captive for some time, he speaks again. "Your work isn't done yet. You have yet another role to play."

The saurian looks at his cell and spits upon the door, the acid instantly eating through the metal. He pushes open the door and walks inside, kneeling in front of the wide-eyed prisoner.

"Listen to me very carefully. There are saurians in Earthrealm. They have always been there, underground, even before Zaterra. There are many of them, all over the world."

Reptile could hear a pin drop if one happened to do so. Saurians? In Earthrealm? This entire time?

"There is a queen among them. You must go to her. Pledge your service. Right now you are weak, but they will help you become strong again. Stronger than all of them." He reaches forward and grabs onto the mask keeping Reptile's mouth shut. He once more firmly states, planting the sentence in Reptile's mind, "Go to Earthrealm and find your people."

He opens the mask. Reptile turns his head and spits upon his chains, mustering up enough bile to free himself. He falls to all fours as he breaths heavily. He looks up, wanting to ask the stranger several questions---who is he, where did he come from, how he knows this, why free him---but when he does, the other saurian is gone. His eyes dart throughout the darkness and his nostrils sniff desperately for a trail, but there is none.

Suddenly the door to the dungeon opens, and he can hear the guards laughing and talking as they descend the stairs. Reptile feels strength, rage and purpose returning to his limbs. He fully intends to find his people and drive back his feral self, but for the moment, his primal nature will do. First he will inflict a horrible, brutal death upon his guards, and then...

"Saurians... Earthrealm... My queen..."

"Did you hear something?" one of the guards says as they walk in front of his cell, discovering that it is open far too late. The last thing they see is a blur of green scales, yellow eyes and white teeth and claws leaping at them from the darkness.
