The year is 2030, and competitive gaming is a worldwide phenomenon.

The world has come far from the days where professional gaming is stigmatized, stadiums erected in the name of physical sports soon being re-purposed into stadiums for competitive games. From high-octane first-person shooters to intense rhythm games – everything is accepted in this world where games reign supreme.

And as a person who lives in this world, you’re currently as tired as you could possibly be.

When Fletcher said you would be training for the rest of the day, he meant it entirely. You didn’t get out of matches with him until the other arcade manager forced you out of the machine – if your arcade was still in operation, that wouldn’t have been an issue! Unfortunately, all good things must end, so you signed off with a parting gift from Fletcher.

“This will do you better than the shotgun you have.” He handed you a silver gun that looked more like a blunderbuss than a shotgun, but you took it gratefully and swapped out the rusty one currently in your loadout. “Good luck, Wolfgang.”

That was…you think five hours ago now? Currently you’re in your apartment and your head is hidden under your pillow. You were asleep until moments ago, but you’ve been awakened by the sound of soft and rhythmic knocking at your door. You peek out from underneath the pillow and look at the clock, wondering what time it could be if someone’s at your door – judging by how dark your room is, there’s no way in hell anyone should be at the door.

3:17 AM, the impossibly bright red digits of your bedside clock tell you.

What do you do?

>Groggily get up and answer the door – who could it be?
>Wait until it goes away – it’s too early for this shit.
>Recall the gun you got from Fletcher, because you’re a Warscape gun enthusiast apparently.
>Other.

Your mind wanders towards the gun Fletcher had given you on your way out of the game – a long silver thing that, as previously stated, looked more like an old pirate’s blunderbuss rather than a traditional shotgun. He assured you that it would work in competitive play, stating that it had good damage output as well as a quick reloading mechanism that gives it that extra edge. You’d like to say that you insisted that he shouldn’t give it to you, but you know Fletcher has never been big on shotguns – either you get some use out of it, or he sells it later for money he most likely doesn’t need.

Score for you, getting a good gun for FREE.

>BPQ-19 - Silverdollar shotgun
>DMG to limbs: 30 HP, DMG to body: 55 HP, DMG to head: 75 HP
>Ammunition: 2/12
>Features: quick-load mechanism

Regardless of your fictional armament choice, you let out a small groan as the knocking continues, throwing your legs over the side of your bed and rising up with no small difficulty. Your body is still sore from Rock’s assault on your arcade, and you’re physically still not 100% - getting spiked into an arcade machine isn’t the greatest! You throw on a shirt and move into the living room while rubbing the sleep out of your eyes, whoever’s knocking at the door this early can deal with you being in your underwear while you talk to them.

Moving over to the door, you go to open it but pause, suddenly remembering all of the shit that’s happened to you over the last few days. Instead, you are wise and lean forwards to make use of the peephole.

Funnily enough, you can’t see jack shit because it’s pitch black outside. The knocking continues.

>Sigh and open the door – might as well get this over with.

You squint as you look at the door through your tired state, mind struggling to get caught up with the waking world. The rhythmic knocking does not stop for even a moment – surely whoever’s out there must be just as tired as you? For all you know it could be someone wishing you ill will, or it could be 0phelia, or it could even be a particularly go-getting salesman! Either way, you aren’t opening this door until you know whom the fuck be steppin’ on your doorstep.

"I'm not accepting any pamphlets, priests or alternative medicine." You call out, voice still heavily groggy as you continue to rub at your eyes. Why did people need to come around this late? First you had your life invaded upon, then your place of work invaded upon, why did your home need to come into it now? You need at least one place as a sanctuary, goddamnit!

The knocking stops as whoever is on the other side considers their words – you’re almost tempted to grab a chair just so you don’t need to stand up anymore, you’re slouching and your body feels heavy. You’ve never been a morning person, especially so when you’re being disturbed at THREE IN THE MORNING.

You aren’t upset, not at all.

“I am not…offering any of those things.” You hear a very familiar voice from the other side of your door, and you almost consider banging your head against the corner of a table until she goes away – is this a dream? Are you really being dealt such a shitty hand that she’s at your fucking house now? What is your LIFE?

You want to get off of 0phelia’s wild ride, but apparently that ride just doesn’t fucking stop.

>Invite her in – you’ll have a verbal battle of wits at three in the morning!

No. Fuck this, you aren’t dealing with this – in fact, fuck her for coming all this way to your home at three in the morning! Fuck 0phelia! You turn on your heel and go to fetch your cellphone, not even bothering to respond to her words. Just because she’s assailed your life doesn’t mean you need to march to the beat of her drum, especially when at this point she’s really done everything she can against you? She dug up your past, leaked your address…what else does she have left, other than being a nuisance like this? You genuinely can’t think of anything.

As you almost make it to your room, you can hear her begin speaking once more.

“I have not come…to cause strife. I simply…have something…to give you. Please…consider it.” You hear a strange sound coming from the door, and you turn just in time to see a sealed envelope get pushed through your mail slot. A few moments later, you hear footsteps as she makes her way down the stairs leading to your door, and then utter silence.

You gaze at the white envelope warily, briefly considering the fact that she could have stuffed some form of poison inside of it, despite how outlandish the thought is. You let out a disgruntled sigh, moving back into your room and flopping onto your bed. No use in calling the police now when she’s already gone! As soon as your head hits the mattress, you pass out once again with one last thought.

Fuck 0phelia.

Several hours later, you’re awoken once more by the sound of LOUD KNOCKING. It sounds like the police are hammering your door with a battering ram, that’s how loud it is! It scares you off of the side of the bed, your frame hitting the floor with a record pace. To add insult to injury, the sun’s rays peek through your blinds and go directly into your eyes.

WHY ARE PEOPLE KNOCKING AT YOUR DOOR SO MUCH!?

You pull yourself off of the ground using your bed, scrambling to your feet as the pounding on your door continues. This time, you pull on a pair of wrinkled jeans that you see on the floor, moving towards the door and looking through the peephole.

Well, judging by the fact that you can only see a deeply bronzed chest and a muscle shirt, you can guess that it’s Rock. Normally you’d have just pretended not to be home but considering the fact that you have a match with him today and he’d just come in anyways if he were so inclined, you try to mat down your bedhead and open the door.

He looks down at you, eyebrow raising at your crumpled attire.

“…good morning.” He says simply. It’s very odd hearing Rock attempt to make pleasantries after everything he’s done to you, but you try to put it in the back of your mind – you know for a fact that he’s going to be put in jail for a few months after your match, so you can’t bring yourself to worry too much about it. You doubt he’d try to beat you up again right now anyways – that’d interfere with his oh so glorious quest to triumph over you.

[Looks like today’s been a waaaaay busier day than I thought! Very sorry about the wait, but I’m back to get down to business.]

You bite your lip as you assess the situation in front of you – even despite logically thinking nothing will happen at this point in time, the part of you that very much remembers getting the shit beaten out of him is objecting to this very intensely. However, you let out a sigh as you decide on stepping aside, raising an arm to vaguely gesture for him to come inside. There’s no point in not being polite unfortunately, you’ll just need to take out all of your anger towards him in the game.

Rock seems surprised that you’re offering him this, but nonetheless he ducks into your door frame (seriously why the hell is he so tall) and makes his way over to your table. He sits down and looks over at you.

“We are supposed to be at the arena in an hour. They wish to take pictures.” He says simply, not bothering with any small talk. You’re starting to realize Rock is a very simple guy with simple emotions, but you file this away in the back of your mind. Not like you’ll be seeing him for very long after the match, although once you win you’ll still have him under your beck and call due to the terms you mutually agreed on.

“They’re advertising it?” You close the door and walk over to the table, being sure to pick up 0phelia’s letter on the way there.

“They already have been. I believe they are using it as a last-minute attraction to get more people to come to the event.”

A part of you doesn’t like that very much, but you can understand it from a business standpoint. Two formerly famous players clashing, and especially two with a reputation on both ends. Rock for his vandalism and assault, and you as a disgraced prodigy. You have no doubt in your mind that it’ll drum up more business than they would have gotten otherwise.

>Ask him why he came here – he could have just as easily texted you this information.
>Go and change into actual decent clothes – you don’t want to show up to the arena dressed like a bum.
>Ask him if he’d like something to eat – might as well keep up the niceties.

“If you don’t mind me being blunt, why are you here? You could have easily texted me that information, I gave you my number.” You sit across from him and cross your arms, feeling mighty suspicious of this. Even if he’s not here to beat you up, what’s to say he doesn’t have an ulterior motive? There’s logically no reason that he should be here at all!

“Do you not remember competitive etiquette?” Rock says with a hint of surprise to his tone, eyebrows raising as he leans back and regards you. The hell is he talking about?

“Whatever you’re referring to, I don’t know it.” You respond truthfully, shrugging your shoulders at him. That sounds like a fat load of bullshit to you, and you can’t think of any form of etiquette that would require an opponent to show up at your place of living. Honestly that sounds like a recipe for disaster knowing some old teams, and especially so with the man sitting across from you. The dude fucking tossed you like a sack of potatoes across your arcade, what would stop him from coming in with a baseball bat or something if he were so inclined?

“It is only proper for a direct challenger to give the challenged a ride to the arena. Upon second thought, it does not surprise me that you do not know this, considering you were not Genesys’s team captain.”

You try and remember if Fletcher accepted any carpools with other teams, but nothing springs to mind. Whether it’s due to Rock being untruthful or just the sands of time withering away your memory, you don’t know.

>Tell him you can make it to the arena on your own just fine – you were planning to go with Cinder anyways.

>>
“Would you mind if I changed really quick, then? I don’t want to go to the arena looking like a bum.” He nods to you, so you rise up and make your way back to your room, closing the door behind you. Once you’ve done that, you take the envelope out of your pocket and open it up, sitting down on your bed as you unfold the paper.

It only contains two sentences, but they manage to unnerve you.

>I wish you the best of luck in your match today, Nova.
>Check your Warscape account at your earliest convenience.

And just what the hell is that supposed to mean? You glare holes into the paper as your thoughts begin to race – what did she do to your account? Did 0phelia somehow get your password or something? What did she do? You let out a disgruntled and anxious sigh, rising from your bed and walking over to your closet with a worried frown.

You settle on the fact that she either actually did something to your account or that she’s just trying to throw you off before the match. You’re directly taking a big piss on her plans by doing this – she’s been running off of the fact that you absolutely don’t want publicity whatsoever, and you have no doubt she’s concocted some fucked up plan within her mind to get back at you for it.

“Whatever, it doesn’t matter right now.” You murmur, opening your closet door.

So many options, so little time! Even with 0phelia’s letter and the match with Rock weighing on your mind, there’s always a suitable occasion for a FASHION MONTAGE.

[I am proud of this and I hope you like it just as much as I do. I can only hope this was worth the wait.]

You crack your knuckles as you sift through the closet, eyes searching for the perfect outfit to take to the arena. What will it be? A snazzy dress shirt? A whole ass suit? Perhaps a wonderful but suitably wacky array of colors that express your tastes and personality? SO MANY CHOICES. And hey, you even have an unwitting participant for your SICK FASHION CHOICES in the other room!

Just kidding, you’re not gonna show off to that dude lol.

As you go through the closet, you decide that the first and foremost factor should be comfort. Why would you want to walk around in something that’s really stiff to move in? You’re gonna have to take pictures in that outfit, as well as potentially interact with other people whilst wearing it! With that in mind, you reach into your dresser and pull out the comfiest pair of boxers that you own. Fuck, these are just the best. You discard your pants in a slightly dramatic fashion, flinging them across the room and nearly taking out your monitor as you do so. You don’t care though, it’s all in the name of FASHION.

Now that you’re equipped with boxers and socks, it’s time for the REAL SHIT. GOD, FASHION MONTAGES ARE THE GREATEST.

You reach into the closet and pull out a plain black shirt – normally people would scoff at this, how could this possibly be the pinnacle of basic fashion? The point is that it’s a blank slate, a representation of a new dawn as you seek to carve out your destiny once again. Also, it fits your nerdy twink ass extremely well, so it also has that going for it. When you clothes shop, you only get stuff that fits you perfectly because why buy clothes if they don’t fit? You’re a practical dude, and practicality is key when it comes to the world of SELF IMAGE. As well as that, you pull out your nicest pair of jeans – shit, have you even worn these before? Now’s as good of a time as ever, so you slide them on and you feel that sweet, sweet denim cling to you- okay this is getting a little weird now. Time to dial it back a little bit. There are limits to the glory of fashion.

You look through the closet and decide to throw on a blue plaid button up t-shirt as well, because that compliments it well enough. Not too fancy, but it’s enough to make you look pretty alright. You complete the look by putting on a pretty nice belt – you catch a look of yourself in the mirror, and you look like a handsome respectable young man!

You go to turn away from the closet, but you feel your mind drift to something you’d purposely been ignoring…the cardboard box pressed into the corner of the closet. A memory of the past, of times long forgotten.

You find the thoughts of your modern outfit leaving your mind as you walk back towards the closet, stooping down to look at the box. It’s unmarked, yet despite that you know it’s contents like the back of your hand – it’s the only remnants of your team, after all. You got rid of a vast majority of things from that house, but these…well, you couldn’t part with them if you tried. Even with everything that happened, these still matter to you.

You find yourself reaching out to take it, lifting it up from the dusty corner and moving it over to the bed. It has quite a bit of weight to it due to the sheer amount of contents, and with a bit of trepidation you open up the box. Inside is a partition – on one side are folded up clothes, and the other contains a metric fuckton of necklaces. Medals, to be more precise – all of them that you ever earned as a member of Genesys. You let out a long drawn out sigh as you look into the box, reaching in and pulling out the topmost clothing article.

Hey, this was the last jacket you had ever wore – the one made specifically for the finals, in fact. It’s a primarily black jacket, with plenty of gold patterns that look very appealing to the eye. There’s a myriad of product logos placed in various places, your team was a hit with the advertisers back in the day and it certainly shows just by looking at this fucking thing. On the back, across where the width of your bruise currently is in fact, is your old team’s name and yours underneath it.

GENESYS
NOVA

Fuck, this is a real blast from the past. You set that one aside and look at the next – still black and gold with different pattern variations and different sponsors. You can’t help but smile as memories begin to resurface – you recall a drunken Buster crowing about the major victory you guys had achieved, slumping over the dining table and passing out. The next morning, Drifter woke him up by pouring a half pint of water on him – and she made him clean it up, too!

You’re aware you’re on a time schedule, but you can’t stop yourself from looking through your old jackets and all the memories associated with them. It’s almost like a mental block has been lifted, and you find yourself smiling as you relive the days where you had everything. Soon the pile dwindles, and all that’s left is a jacket that’s different than the rest – rather than black and gold, it’s white and orange. You chuckle at it.

This was the first jacket you had ever worn. Fletcher had given it to you during your welcoming party at the house, and it looks so tacky. Back then the team was called Genesis rather than Genesys, you still have no idea why Fletcher switched out the I. As you continue to look at it, you feel the memory rise up in your head. The day you arrived at the team house for the first time, to be exact.

[I’m gonna be heading to bed after this one guys, I’m pretty tired. Sorry for being gone most of the day, really didn’t expect to be as busy as I was! Please give me any of your thoughts or critiques or feedback – it helps me write better and also I really enjoy hearing what you all think. Thank you so much for reading and I hope you’ve enjoyed! Have a great night, anons.]

You bury the memory down for introspection later, you don’t want to keep Rock waiting. He’s come all this way to drive you to the event apparently, and as suspicious as it is, you don’t want to look a gift horse in the mouth. With that in mind, you go to stand up and walk towards the door, but once again your attention is attracted back to the box. Namely, the white and orange jacket.

“…fuck it.” You murmur to yourself, snatching it up and sliding it on. It still fits pretty well, and you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror with it on. It kind of works with your fashion ensemble, so sure, you’ll wear it to the match as a gesture of good luck. To double that, you catch something glinting from inside the box – a necklace that isn’t a medal! You know what it is as soon as you pick it up – a caduceus with a green gem in the middle, something that Fletcher had gotten for the entire team. He was always big on team unity and making sure that you guys were always on the same page - you put that on too.

“For old time’s sake, as well as luck.” You say with a chuckle, walking over to the door and opening it. As soon as you do, you almost run into Rock – apparently you’ve been in here a bit, because his hand is raised as if he’s going to knock on your door.

“Ah. I was about to knock.” No shit, Sherlock.

[Good morning! Had a real good sleep even if it was a bit long, now it’s time to get started.]

“Have you eaten yet, Rock?” You find yourself asking, mostly in part due to the rumbling in your own stomach. To be honest you don’t really give a damn if he’s eaten or not, but yesterday’s breakfast incited your urges to cook once more! So, if he’s here already you might as well cook for two.

“I…have not.” Once again he looks surprised at your offer, so you shrug and meander over to the kitchen, rolling up the sleeves of your jacket so you don’t get it dirty. After that pretty intense fashion and nostalgia session, you really don’t feel like ruining the look you decided upon – you beckon Rock back over to the table.

“Are we short on time, or can we afford to sit for a bit?”

“I would…prefer it if we arrived early. Things can take longer than necessary.”

You can concede that to him. You remember sometimes where organizations and arenas wanted to hold big photo shoots and they required certain things to be exactly as they envisioned it, or interviews that took up way too much time. Hell, if there was speculated bad blood between teams, they’d ask for press conferences! Those minefields were always hard to navigate, but you had the boon of not being team captain – all you had to do was sit there and look pretty while Fletcher took the reins.

“Then I’ll make something we can eat on the road.” You say, cracking your knuckles and opening your refrigerator. Time to showcase your other talent for all it’s worth!

You begin cooking with gusto, but a few minutes into the process your brow is furrowed. You’ll be honest, this is sort of not turning out well? Whether it’s due to stress because of the match later today, or anxiety due to 0phelia potentially messing with your account, cooking just isn’t working out for you today. After your attempt ends in an entirely burnt mess, you let out a brooding sigh and scrape the remains into your garbage can.

Man, why does your cooking have to get fucked up now? This week has just been one gigantic universal dick slap to the face.

“Looks like I’m not at my best today.” You tell him, walking into the living room and allowing your sleeves to lower once more. God! This is a wonderful start to the day, surely it will only get better from here.

You don’t care if you’re tempting fate again by saying that, it’s just the truth! Your days have acquired a bad habit of going downhill just when things are supposed to go right.

“I understand.” Rock nods his head, and you want to punch him. He’ll never understand the bullshit he’s put you through, nor what 0phelia has done.

“Mind if I give Cinder a call quick? She’s planning on coming to watch, and I think she’s on the way to the arena. Might as well kill two birds with one stone.” You tell Rock, already pulling out your cellphone and typing in Cinder’s number. Rock shrugs and moves around you, walking towards the door and opening it. You’ll take that as an affirmative, so you dial her number and hold the phone to your ear. She responds almost immediately.

“Heya! What’s up?” Cinder says, voice a bit obscured. It sounds like she’s in a room full of people, and that makes your brow furrow.

“I’m about to head over to the arena, was going to ask if you wanted a ride.”

“I’m already here, dude! There’s a hell of a lot of people!” She laughs into the phone as you hear the voices lessen – she must be trying to find a better place to be able to hear you. “They’re advertising your match almost as much as the main tournament! I forgot how weird you looked as a teen!”

You find yourself cringing at that – of course you don’t have any recent photos, so they needed to pull up your old competitive pictures. Back then you were young and full of bombastic energy, often posing into the camera in a very dramatic and cocksure way. Man, those were the days! Back when you didn’t have this shaggy-ass Eraserhead tier hair, your eternal broodiness clouding your very existence, as well as 0phelia twisting your arm in every conceivable manner.

You could fix at least one of those things at least – you majorly need a haircut.

“Ah…wait by the entrance for me, then? Rock showed up to give me a ride, something about competitive etiquette.”

“Wow, I’m surprised he’d abide by that considering he nearly killed my abdomen and actually killed your arcade!”

So that wasn’t a bullshit thing he made up on the spot? Huh, neat.

“Yeah, you’d think so. I gotta go, so I’ll see you soon.”

“Yep!”

The line goes dead, and you let out another patented sigh.

“Hold on a moment.” A thought pops into your head, and you rush back into your room and rifle around through some clothes piles. You really don’t feel like getting rushed by reporters, angry pro players, or rabid fans – so you equip the most classic disguise in the book. A regular black baseball cap and sunglasses. You glance at yourself in the mirror and let out a sigh – there goes your perfect fashion ensemble that the QM most lovingly crafted for you. But hey, it’ll deter any rabble-rousers, so you suppose it’s worth it just for some peace of mind.

“Ready to go?” Rock raises his eyebrows when he sees your new attire but doesn’t comment further. You notice that his facial expressions never really change from being blank, and the only way you can really tell his emotions is when he raises his eyebrows or when he’s coming at you with the force of a runaway truck.

“Yeah. I’ll pick us up something to eat on the way there.” You respond to him, moving past him and out onto the landing. The air is pretty chilly today, you can tell that autumn is starting to fade to winter in short order. Thankfully you wore this jacket, which keeps your arms nice and cozy! The two of you make your way down and attract attention from some passerby’s, but Rock leads you over to your apartment’s parking lot and to his truck.

Damn, that’s actually a really nice truck. You half expected him to own a beater or something. He walks around and unlocks the doors, sliding into the driver’s seat.

[THE FUCKING PORCUPINE CAME BACK. MY PORCH IS IN DANGER.]

You walk forward and hop up into the truck, and you decide to take a look around. An all-black interior, and it’s surprisingly very well kept. You can’t spot a single speck of dirt, in fact – he must take really good care of it. You wouldn’t have expected Rock to even have the ability to be meticulate in anything he does, but this truck certainly sinks that train of thought – you should probably get a vehicle one of these days. You have your license, you’ve just never really put it to use since the arcade is within walking distance, and that’s all you’ve really ever gone to over the past five years.

You are a sad, sad man.

Rock starts up the truck, and the engine sounds just as nice as the rest of the truck. It isn’t loud in the slightest, in fact it practically purrs. Rock’s radio turns on, and he connects it to his phone – as he starts to pull out of the parking lot, he switches on some alternative rock from a time long past.

You wouldn’t have pegged him as an alt rock kind of dude!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uF3reVVUbio

“Wanna swing by a drive-thru on the way there? I may have shit the bed on breakfast, but we should both be filled up for the match.” You take out your cellphone and begin texting Cinder, reminding her to meet you outside of the arena. You don’t want to walk in there with Rock because people will know immediately, but you definitely don’t want to walk in alone. Cinder’s practically your bodyguard at this point!

“Sounds good to me.”

As he drives down the road, you look out the window to finally observe more of your town. It’s a very urban place – malls and arcades dot the landscape; an occasional grove of trees present to shake it up a little bit. You chuckle at the other arcades – you know for a fact that a lot of people come to yours purely because you can afford to make things very cheap. You have enough money to be able to live a luxurious life until you’re old, so when you hardly pay for anything other than business expenses? That’s why you’re a big hit in the town.

You focus your thoughts on the current conversation you’re having with Cinder over text, not only because you don’t want to talk to Rock, but also because you’re currently stressing a little about the match. You don’t know how things will go inside the match, and certainly not outside of it – if someone finds out it’s you, you have legitimate concerns about being decked by people who are still mad, or old acquaintances that you just cut out of the loop without any words on the subject.

>WOLFGANG: Hey, how did watching your sister go?

>CINDER: It went ok! She’s a bit of a finnicky eater so I had to dig deep to find something she liked, but it all worked out. I got her off to school in the morning and headed over to the arena right afterwards, so I’ve been over here for a bit!

>WOLFGANG: Well, you won’t be alone there for long. We’re on our way.

>CINDER: Hell yeah, man! I’ve found a few people I know here so it’s been alright passing the time, but I’m really boooooooooored.

>WOLFGANG: Sorry about that.

“Nova.” Rock’s voice breaks through the veil of uncomfortable air and alternative rock, causing you to look up from your phone and at him. “What do you wish to order?”

Oh shit, he’s at the drive-thru already. You hadn’t even noticed when the truck came to a stop! Time to get your breakfast on and make another very important decision! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, after all.

[Sorry for the wait, walked to get the mail!]

You lean towards the driver’s window and squint, trying to make out the small font that these guys use. Their menu is pretty badly laid out honestly, but you think you find something under the breakfast section that you’re into? All it says is ‘breakfast bucket’ and nothing else, and that’s enough mystery for you to agree to purchase it! Rock shrugs and orders himself a breakfast burrito with more egg than meat, as well as a black coffee to go along with it. That’s normal enough, you suppose – part of you thinks he’d just fucking order raw meat because he is who he is.

A few minutes later, you two are riding down the road once more. The bucket actually contains a plethora of good food – some burritos, a tin of scrambled eggs with ham and ketchup mixed in, as well as a variety of other things. Shit, this is a lot of food for the amount you paid! Maybe things are finally turning around for you?

Bold words for you to say despite not having tasted any of it, but it’s certainly a small win in your book.

>Begin eating your breakfast bucket – gotta nosh on it while it’s hot, homie.

You hungrily reach into the bucket and pull out a breakfast burrito, unwrapping it from it’s package and beginning to bite into it. Shit! It’s so good! It seems to be composed of egg, ham, and green peppers. You let out a satisfied groan when it meets your taste buds, and you see Rock look over at you with an arched eyebrow. You stare at him back blankly – you haven’t eaten today, so you’ll enjoy your food as much as you want. In fact, you finish off the burrito with record speeds and tilt the bucket towards him wordlessly.

He hesitantly reaches in and grasps a burrito.

Good. Fuckin’ bitch better take one.

The ride to the arena continues in silence from there, the sounds of soothing indie rock gracing your ears as you idly eat and look out the window broodingly. You let out an anxiety-ridden sigh – this whole situation is fucked. Your mind wanders back to the letter 0phelia had left you earlier this morning, the contents still unnerving you. Well wishes and a message telling you to check your Warscape account? With everything that’s happened, that raises so many red flags in your head – she will not stop in her attempts to recruit you onto her team that doesn’t even exist yet, and in your head all she’s trying to do is play mind games until you eventually concede to her wishes.

At least with Rock, he’ll be going away for a few months after this. The only reason you’re still around him is because of the threat of getting knocked around again, as well as the impromptu deal you had talked him into. All you need to do is win this single match, and then he’s under your command until he gets locked up. Normally you wouldn’t even consider this as an option, but judging by everything you’ve seen from him, you’ll just hope that he’ll take the L and listen like he told you he would.

The ride continues, and eventually you can see a bulbous roof peeking out from between a few buildings. Looks like that’s the arena! When you round the block, you see it in clearer detail – digital signs are on full display, and you can see tons of people crowded around outside as they go to enter the building. You had forgotten that the arena in this city was moderately sized, and you didn’t expect this big of a turn out.

The signs proudly display two things on loop.

TEAM BAROQUE’S WARSCAPE TOURNAMENT IV

The other makes you frown as Rock begins to search for a parking space.

I hope we did. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having a cheerleader accountant.
>>
>>3544515
Now talking more seriously... I wonder if she can be redeemed if she truly apologizes.

She did a bad thing but I can't see her as "evil" or something, just really childish. She doxed not because we refused to join her but because she thought we were cheating and embarrassed her on live stream.

For now I will wait until we get information about who told ROCK we were cheating. If it was 0phelia then yes, that's actually bad and she is actively manipulating the situation to force us to join her. If it wasn't her then I see her more as a misguided girl that needs to apologize.
>>
>>3544532
Since children share the same brain development as sociopaths, and considering she's a teenager now. It would be stupid of us to consider her actions childish rather than outright sociopathic.
She wanted us on her team whether we wanted to be on it or not, and attempted to threaten us to get her way. She clearly invested time into researching us to track us down... An apology would never suffice for me. That girl gotta burn in a way that going pro, or becoming beloved, could never be an option.

>go to recruit a 'known' cheater

Most of her moves towards Wolfgang so far have trended towards malicious. At the very least, she has some knowledge abut the situation with Rock and has been rather unrepentant about her role in getting the arcade trashed. And she's still playing the 'join my team and I'll fix it' angle. Contrast that with what we know about her encounters with Fletcher, and it feels like 0phelia is actively doing whatever she can to get what she wants.
That being said, I'm all for forgiving her once she apologizes, and then still refusing to join her. It's just the principle of the matter.
Fuck 0phelia.
>>
>>3544543
Stay strong, anon. We can't let these 0phelia-apologists win.
>>
>>3544542
Don't know, Anon. The worst thing she did (Second worst, the worst was the doxing) was the ROCK thing, and we are not sure it was her.

She seems pretty childish. Maybe she is some kind of rich girl and always gets what she wants? That would explain it. I wonder why she is so focused on being on a team and reaching nº1.

I still think she is more childish than malicious (Until we know if she sent ROCK after us anyway).

... wait. Possible rich girl focused on reaching the top. Maybe she is related to Auxilia somehow and wants to defeat their team.

>>
[MY ASS IS BACK. Time to continue, apologies for the wait!]

You look at your phone with some trepidation, mind immediately jumping to 0phelia. You’ve started to associate the buzzing of your phone with her calls, which in hindsight probably isn’t the healthiest thing to do? Regardless, you turn on your phone’s screen and are immensely relieved by the fact that it isn’t her calling! It’s actually your landlord, Alexis! This is a welcome sight.

You answer the phone, and then immediately have to rip it away from your ear due to the volume.

“YOU HAVE A MATCH TODAY AND DIDN’T TELL MEEEEEEEEEEE!?” Alexis screams into the phone line, and you scramble to pull it back so you can respond. Rock looks over, obviously startled by the noise as well – you can’t believe you forgot to tell her! In your defense, a lot of shit’s been happening, but you know she won’t see it that way.

“Listen, I’ve been really busy preparing for it-“

“NO EXCUSES!” She shoots down your claims with another shotgun blast of noise, and you think you hear the honking of a horn in the background? Is she driving right now? “I’LL BE THERE SOON, AND WE CAN TALK ABOUT IT THEN.”

“But-“

The line goes dead, and you’re left staring at the phone with bewilderment.

That…well that took you off guard in a major way, but at least that means you’ll have another supporter in your corner?

“Go on in by yourself Rock, if people see me with you they’re going to know who I am, and I don’t want to be hassled before the match. I’ve had enough hassling to last me a lifetime.” You tell him, and he shrugs and nods.

“I will send event workers your way, then.” Without another word, he gets out of the truck and begins making his way towards the building. Almost immediately, you see a crowd of people lose their shit and make their way towards him, shoving merchandise and other things in his face. Looks like you’re definitely going to be the heel of this match up, you literally cannot imagine anyone coming up to you for autographs with things how they are. After you see him disappear into the building, you get out and begin walking towards the building yourself, keeping your eyes out for Cinder. You can’t locate her very well with all of the people, so you resign yourself to moving through the crowd in order to find her. Or maybe you could just go inside without her and tell her to find you?

You let out an anxious breath and move into the crowd of people, trying your best to get through them with your hat and sunglasses still stationary. These people are frenzied, trying their best to get past others and into the building – it makes navigating through them extremely hard, and there are a few moments where you think you’re about to be exposed! By the time you get through some of them, your hands are fully on top of your hat and you’re trying your best to not get trampled by this mob! Whether they’re here for the match with you and Rock or the actual tournament, they are very excited to be here, and it shows.

“Hey! Move it, dickhead!” You hear someone from behind you say, and you feel two hands shove you into more people, who also get upset and start shoving you as well. Holy shit, since when did casual fans start to get this aggressive? Is this just how sports fans act nowadays? You would think people have standards and etiquette! As you’re being manhandled through the crowd, you almost lose your footing – but you feel someone’s hand wrap around your wrist and yank you out of the stream of people with little effort.

“Are you…doing okay?”

“Oh, fuck off.” You blurt this out as you look at your pseudo-savior – yep, it’s fucking 0phelia. You didn’t think you’d have to deal with her in person on top of everything else, but that’s what you get for tempting fate! She’s in a similar state as you, wearing a large brimmed hat and keeping her head low as to not be spotted by passerby’s. She’s a famous streamer, and sometimes you forget that.

It all honesty, it doesn’t shock you that she’s here. For one, it’s an event where you’re confirmed to be showing up. For two, it is a tournament event – for all you know, she could be competing in it. It does bother you a bit that she managed to pick you out through an entire fucking disguise, but that’s just par for the course with literally everything else that’s happened.

The average boner for 0phelia is taking away some anon's ability to think and empathise with Wolfy. She ain't worth a salted square and you know it!

She no deserve a redemption arc of any kind. In any case she clearly doesn't feel bad about what she did, the only reason 0phelia has mellowed is because she's trying a different strategy to get to us.

That's where you're wrong kiddo; 0phelia is a cyberneticly constructed pseudohuman created for the sole purpose of being mad at videogamrs. >>
>>3545056
Yeah, I know. But why is she stopping us now and what does she want to say? It's probably not "Join my team" again. She already did that enough.

And... Why was she at 3am in front of our door? That's not normal, she needs a good reason (at least for her) to do that.

God dammit. Internet crashed before I posted.
My bet is she either snuck away from group/person X or feels bad about what she did.

There’s a difference between hating her, and just being irrational. I hate 0phelia. She did Doxxed us, forced us back into public, and now we have to fight against Rock because he has a hard on for warscape(or something)

But that doesn’t mean we can question her.

‘Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer’ that’s a thing, right?

Plus the more we know about her, the more we fuck her up later on
>>

Oh, right. We are probably the only one who wears our jacket. We are not that liked.

Still, ROCK is the liked one and he is going to prison for knocking out a bunch of cops.

I'm starting to think we are a normal guy in a Yu-gi-oh-esque world where a game is the core of the civilization. That would explain 0phelia a bit better.

Still think we should at least wait to try ruining her life. We need to be the actual adult here. Right now she is just being annoying and doxing us was more like a brat having a fit than actually malicious.

>>
You allow the anger that fills your mind at the mere sight of this girl to slowly fade away, clenching and unclenching your hands as you step further away from the crowd. Causing a scene here would do no one any good, so you grit your teeth and begin walking towards the building. 0phelia follows you without a word, her hands clasped firmly against her stomach as she does. You can see her little side-braid things poking out from under her hat, and you definitely don’t miss her gunmetal grey eyes peering at you from behind her glasses.

“Why are you here?” You get straight to the point with a cold tone, not willing to mince words with this woman whatsoever. You’ve had enough of her presence in your life, and the fact that she’s still plaguing you today only makes that pit of rage grow even further.

“I’ve signed up…for the tournament. I do not…wish to stay idle…whilst I’m here.” She responds in her particular way, adjusting the backpack she’s wearing to a more comfortable position. “And also…I am here to…watch your match. Although…I would have to…regardless. So, I suppose it…is a moot point.”

“Uh-huh, sure. What the fuck was this morning about?”

“I forgot…that people don’t necessarily…have the same…sleeping schedule that…I keep. I wished to…give you a letter. Did you…read it?” She asks.

“I did. Why do you want me to check my Warscape account? What did you do to it?”

“If you have not…seen it yet…then my lips are sealed.” She gives you a coy smile from under the hat, and you really feel like hauling off and punching her in the goddamn mouth. Unfortunately, that would be bad, so you restrain your flash of anger – god, she pisses you off so fucking much!

She leans around you and notices something in the distance, her lips pursing as she steps back. You don’t give a fuck, though, so you continue your interrogating.

“And how did you pick me out in the crowd? Why did you, even?”

“You looked like…you didn’t want to be found. And that jacket…went off the market…several years ago. I don’ believe…you have enough supporters…so it was a guess…on my behalf. And to why I did…I wished to have a…conversation. However, that seems…unlikely as of now. I wish you…the best of luck. I hope my…gift aids you. Knowing you…I’m sure you’ll…enjoy it.” She reaches out and pats you on the shoulder, stepping into the stream of people and disappearing just as fast.

You got as much info out of that as you were expecting to, and that increases your anger twofold. It seemed strange that she cut the conversation off there, considering her goal of picking you out of the crowd was to have one in the first place.

>Continue walking towards the building – you could care less why she left, only that she did in the first place.

You try your best to locate whatever had scared her off, but you can’t for the life of you find it. All you’re seeing is a bunch of people walking towards the building, some people lingering around the entrance and having a smoke…that’s about it. You shrug and continue your journey forward, hoping that your anger against 0phelia fades by the time you reach the entrance.

Speaking of that…you are extremely concerned as to what she could have done to your account. Did she send you something sketchy on it? Did she send you something good in an attempt to bribe you? Did she somehow sneak cheats onto your account? That last comment she said really fucking bugs you – knowing you, you’ll enjoy it huh? Considering her little fit when she left the arcade, you wouldn’t be fucking surprised if she pulled it off just to spit in your wounds. You sigh as you finally get to the entrance, ducking inside without issue. Looks like you managed to avoid detection…for the most part, at least.

The entrance room of the arena is pretty standard fare – a large space for a lot of people to loiter around, various doors and hallways that lead to the main stage, and a bunch of miscellaneous areas that you really don’t care about right now. You scan the inside for Cinder, and luckily you find her pretty quickly – looks like she has her hair up in a ponytail today, as well as wearing some old Genesys merch. How sweet!

This is a SERIOUS DAY. No time for practical jokes. Writing now!
>>
You briefly consider sneaking around her and scaring her – you are wearing a disguise, after all! However, you do realize that now isn’t exactly the time for jokes, so you just move past more members of the crowd and make your way over. She looks up at you and is confused for a few seconds, but then you see her eyes narrow as you come closer. When it hits her, you see her eyes light up and mirth and she has to slap a hand over her mouth to keep from letting her laughter get out.

“Yeah, yeah. Laugh it up while you can.” You murmur to her, leaning against the pillar and adjusting your top tier disguise. She continues to laugh, before taking her hand away with some accompanying giggles.

“S-Sorry…didn’t expect to see you with that hat and glasses.” She stops and points towards one of the walls. “Check it out, your fifteen minutes of fame.”

You follow her finger and your eyes widen, then you feel your very soul cringe. On the wall is a fucking big-ass advertisement for your exhibition match – and the pictures they chose were you at your actual worst. They have it flicking between shots where you’re standing and facing the camera, and a side shot as you gaze down the opponent’s picture. Rock’s look alright, considering he still is active, and they were probably taken very recently. Yours, however? Your standing shot is you with your arms outstretched, as if to say, “Bring it on!”. Your face is contorted into a fucking dumb looking smirk, and you really want to travel back in time and smack your old self. Why were you like this? Your side shot isn’t much better, the same smirk on your face and your hand brought up to cup your chin, almost as if you were contemplating how to deconstruct the opponent on the spot.

You desperately hope that they switch those pictures with the ones you’re about to take.

[I’m gonna head off for the night, have some stuff to do in the afternoon so I’m gonna get some extra sleep to prepare for it. Thank you so much for reading, and please give me any critiques, feedback, or just general comments – we’re five threads in and I still don’t know what the fuck I’m doing lmao. Have a great night, everyone – see you tomorrow!]

You stare at your phone and slowly bring your hand towards the power button, very hesitant to turn it on. You really don’t feel like being on the receiving end of Alexis’s wrath, and you’re already in hot water with her because you forgot to tell her about the match. Cinder raises an eyebrow at your mannerisms but doesn’t comment, so you sigh and turn on the phone. You’ve been sent three messages in rapid succession from your landlord.

>MOTHERFUCKERRRRRRRRR. I’M HELD UP IN TRAFFIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!
>I am gonna kick your ass when I see you. I could have been there early!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
>:(

You decide against responding to those, and instead choose to gaze across the entrance are. Rock had informed you that he would send some staff your way, but you really don’t see anyone who looks official? Other than people standing in front of doors that lead into the main showroom – they’re accepting the tickets, and you see a few concessions people loitering around? You let out a frustrated sigh as you look at your phone – maybe you should message him just to make sure there’s no hold up?

You raise your phone up yet again and unlock it, pulling up Rock’s contact information. You can’t imagine what the issue could possibly be that would make this take so long, however with your luck as of late, you’re aware that anything is possible at this point. With that in mind, you formulate a quick text and send it his way, idly tapping your foot against the ground.

>Hey, is something up? No one’s come out to get me yet.

“You doing alright, man?” Cinder asks you, apparently having picked up on the fact that you’re more stressed than usual at the moment. You can’t exactly say you’re the pinnacle of calm, considering you’re glaring at your phone and tapping your foot on the ground with a little more vigor than necessary.

“Yeah, just…nerves, as well as something else.” You begin to tell her the tale of your encounters with 0phelia both at your home and at the arena entrance, and at the end of it her eye is twitching.

“She really doesn’t know when to give up, huh…?” Wow, Cinder sounds pretty pissed off now.

“It seems so. I’m worried she’s messed with my account somehow, so I’m going to ask an official to check it before the match starts. I don’t want to get pinched for anything that isn’t my fault, and if she somehow sneaked a cheat onto my account, I have a feeling Rock will work me over again – I don’t think he’ll give a shit if it’s in public or not.”

She gives a vague noise of agreement as she pulls out her own phone, and thankfully your phone buzzes as you get a response from Rock.

>sent ppl ur way just now, sry 4 w8.

Does…does he really talk like that over text? A part of you feels inexplicably disappointed with him.

You grumble to yourself as you jam the phone into your pocket, crossing your arms and gazing out at the crowd of people. You can see a few people moving around with lanyards and badges, but they make no move to come towards you and Cinder – you can only hope Rock was smart enough to tell them that you’re wearing a disguise, because you aren’t taking this bloody thing off until you’re securely away from the public. Part of you thinks you may be over-reacting, but these dudes are cheering for a guy that beat the hell out of your arcade and four police officers. That’s a little bit fucked up in your head, so you’re perfectly happy to dawdle incognito.

Some time passes as the two of you make idle conversation, and Cinder informs you about the other bits of the event that you weren’t privy to. As the sign so helpfully informed you, this is the fourth tournament hosted by Team Baroque. According to Cinder, they’re a team that popped up and played professionally for one or two years but withdrew once they realized they had a love for the business side of things more than the playing side. As such, they sponsor up and coming teams and host tournaments to scout new talents for their brand. They’re known for being fair people to work with, as well as very lenient towards players when they have personal issues.

Your conversation gets interrupted when a man in a deep cobalt suit seemingly appears in front of you – he’s wearing a badge that apparently means something, and you can spot his Rolex peeking out from underneath his sleeve. He’s a rich dude, and apparently he has a few things to say.

“Are you Nova?” He says under his breath, moving a bit closer so you can hear him better as well as blocking your conversation from the rest of the room. You’d like to think that this is one of the guys sent by Rock, but he seems a little…rich for this scene? You don’t know, maybe you’re jumping at shadows – it’s been a stressful week.

[Good morning, everyone! Back to our remotely scheduled updates. Also, here’s a picture of the dickhead porcupine I took a few days ago.]

“Yeah, that’s me.” You respond to the sharply dressed man, seeing no point in hiding it. You highly doubt that he would see you if he wasn’t already looking for you, and the way he’s currently shielding you from the rest of the crowd indicates that he knows you don’t wish to be seen.

“Good, I’m with Team Baroque. I was sent to retrieve you for updated pictures, as well as potentially a few words to the press. With your circumstances the way they are, however, the latter is entirely optional.” He slicks back his hair and steps away, glancing around to make sure he’s not attracting any attention. Considering he’s wearing a fairly ostentatious suit, you’re surprised he’s not attracting more. “Shall we go?”

You shrug your shoulders and move away from the pillar, keeping your head down low as you do. The entrance has become more crowded somehow – there’s a lot of people showing up for this event, and they definitely don’t all seem to be from this town. Despite it being a respectable size, there’s no way in hell this many people live around the area. You’re desperately hoping it’s fir the actual tournament and not your exhibition.

>Follow after the man, tell Cinder you’ll see her later.
>Ask him if Cinder can come along too, you feel better in general when she’s around.

[Sorry for the wait, also making lunch at the same time!]

Before he starts to walk off, you ask him something. You’re not gonna let your best buddy sit outside by herself, doubly so when she’s bored as hell to begin with!

“Mind If she comes with?” You gesture at her, to which she looks up at you in confusion. Apparently she hasn’t been paying attention! “She’s my +1.”

You doubt that these tournaments have a +1, but apparently you’re being used as a novelty attraction, so you’re gonna exploit the shit out of it while it lasts! He looks at you for a few moments, then looks around you at Cinder, and then shrugs as if he could care less. You’re going to take that as an affirmative, so you tell Cinder to follow along. She puts her phone away and begins walking after the two of you, so that’s a success in your book!

He leads you through quite a few hallways and through a bunch of official doors – apparently the people outside of them recognize his badge on sight, so they allow him into each one. You cast your gaze around the room, looking for another breakfast bucket – you forgot yours in Rock’s truck, and that basically means it’s gone forever! Unfortunately, there is no breakfast bucket to be found, and you have to settle on a single burrito. You take a bite into it, and you sigh.

IT’S JUST NOT THE SAME.

Eventually you’re brought towards another room, this time with a very bright nameplate saying BACKSTAGE AREA. You’re not sure why it took so long to get here, but you do consider the fact that the suited man might be trying to avoid showing civilians where the backstage area is just in case someone tries to do something shifty. You’ve heard horror stories of fans kicking in the doors just to get autographs, which is a very fucked thing to do.

>Go into the room after the cobalt suited man.
>Ask him if you can wait in a different room – if that’s the backstage area, 0phelia will be there, and you don’t want to deal with that.

You feel a familiar sensation on the back of your neck, one that you once grew accustomed due to constantly being on stage. The feeling of being watched. Normally this wouldn’t faze you, as everyone gets a few looks thrown their way every now and again, but this was prolonged staring – it’s especially odd due to the various twists and turns the man took to get to this point. You should really ask his name, now that you think about it?

Regardless, you try to sneakily glance over your shoulder and down the hallway to see if you’re being watched – surprisingly, no one is there. Your brow furrows as you look for any sign of someone being around – you even turn back around to see if the feeling returns. Nope, it’s as gone as fast as it came, and you find yourself feeling confused.

You’re really going to need to take a night to get drunk or something, you’ve been way too tense recently. Everything has you jumping at shadows, and you’re far too worried that something will go wrong. It’s not a healthy mindset to have, but when has your broody ass ever had a healthy mindset, now that you think about it?

Man, you’re a fuckin’ sad sack.

[I’M BACK. Family stuff is annoying. It’s too hot outside. End me, please. Regardless, back to it!]

“Hey, mind if I ask your name? It’ll be irritating if I keep having to refer to you as ‘suit guy’.” You tap the man on the shoulder before he opens the door, and he turns around a bit startled. He apparently wasn’t expecting you to ask his name, but he clears his throat and responds after he gets over the initial shock.

“My name’s Killian, sir. It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance.”

Did this guy just call you a sir? He’s most likely older than you! Judging by his squinted eyes, wrinkles, and slightly receding hairline – he has to be in his late 30s or early 40s! As a stunning young buck like yourself is not nearly around that age, this makes you very uncomfortable – you choose to stop thinking about that though, since he’s about to open the door.

“Actually, uh, is it alright if I wait somewhere nearby rather than in there with the others?” There’s a multitude of reasons behind this decision – for one, you don’t feel like talking to any of the other players at all, especially because it seems like Rock is being hailed as the hero in this battle. You’d like to say that you thought people were smarter than that, but the most dominate sport in the world is gaming – people will overlook anything if it’s for a well-liked player, and doubly so if there’s a feud heading into the fight. The second reason is because you’d like some alone time to go over your strategies to yourself – this was an old ritual that Genesys had imposed upon you. Your team would always get together privately before the game and drill the strategy into your head until it was practically all that was in your mind. With them absent, though…you’ll have to do it on your own.

“If you’re worried about running into people, there’s none inside here right now other than official employees.”

“Huh?”

“We call everyone in before their match – you’re the first one on the card, so you’ll have free reign of the room. If it were a team tournament it would be a different story, but that’s how we run things.”

Hm…interesting. Normally the rooms are way more crowded than this, but maybe this could be a boon for you? Hell, if there are official employees in there, maybe you can summon the press and throw some shade at 0phelia? There could always be the chance that someone could sneak in, though.

So much shit to consider, so little time.

>Actually, you’ll go into the room – if no one important is in there, everything should be fine.

You let out a shaky sigh as Killian opens the door, following him in shortly afterwards. You really need to get a grip on yourself, you’ve been far too focused on shit going wrong – with good reason to be fair, but right now you’re really getting worked up over nothing.

The interior of the backstage area is smaller than you would have expected, the stages you were used to had way bigger! The walls are painted a soothing green, and the carpet is a dark red – an odd match of colors, but one that works well in this particular case. There are plenty of areas to sit in, this arena obviously hosts both solo and team tournaments – in fact you can see two mini-refrigerators packed to the brim with drinks to keep players hydrated while they wait. How quaint, they never had anything like that back in your day – they had you bring your own drinks, even at the first Warscape Invitational!

You scan around the room for a breakfast bucket, just in case you’re lucky in that department. Unfortunately, there is none, and you feel your soul die inside a little bit.

Priorities, Wolfgang. Priorities.

You walk over to one of the tables and sit down, giving the room another once over. There’s a flat screen TV that you can assume will show game footage once the matches start, along with an opening that seems to lead straight onto the stage. There’s a curtain in-between, but you can hear a slight rumbling as people move about in the entrance as well as the actual showroom – somehow the weight of the fact that there will be tons of people only hits you just now.

>Take a peek out of the curtain and see what lies beyond.

Cinder follows into the room after you and immediately strides over to the refrigerator, snatching a can of soda and immediately beginning to down it. Damn, she must have been thirsty! You see Killian begin to open the door to leave, but you call him just before he steps out.

“Hey, I have another question.”

He looks towards you and withdraws back into the room, closing the door and walking over.

“What is it, sir?”

“For one, please don’t call me sir. Second, is there any chance I could access my account before the match starts? Also, I’d like an official to review my account before anything happens.” You recall that you were going to ask this earlier, as you still have a heavy suspicion that 0phelia fucked with your account in some way. It’s entirely possible that she left something innocuous but knowing her and the fact that she came to your doorstep at three in the fucking morning, nothing is ever truly innocuous with her. You know for a fact that she’s a schemer, and you don’t want to get dicked over just because she wants you on her team.

Is it normal for someone to feel this hatred towards a person? Probably not, but that’s what she gets for upheaving literally everything around you.

He pauses and looks you in the eyes, mulling over exactly how to respond.

“Well…that’s an interesting wish, but one that can be accommodated. There is a little bit of time before the match actually starts, as these consoles are tournament issued.” Huh, those exist now? Neat! “And for your account to be reviewed, you would need to consent for your avatar to be accessed while you are in the game – I don’t know why you wish to do this, but it can be done.”

You nod to him, and he responds in kind and leaves the room. You immediately turn to Cinder.

“Alright, my game plan is to find a place to hide or engage him up close. Fletcher went over a lot of stuff with me, and we’ve determined that starting with sniping is key. If I get a few shots off on him, closing in for the kill will be what decides the match. His LMG is dangerous in mid-range, and bothersome at long. If I get in his face, he’ll be forced to rely on only the sword – barring he doesn’t have anymore tricks up his sleeve.”

She nods thoughtfully as she leans back in the chair, sipping more from her can of Spryte.

“That sounds good…I did some more digging, and I can’t find any evidence of what he uses for his secondary equipment. You’ll be entirely in the dark on that front.”

You’re fine with that, you can outclass him with pure gunplay. Training with Fletcher instilled a bit of confidence in you, so you’ll run with it until it expires.

You reach into your pocket and pull out your cellphone once more, immediately swiping over to Alexis’s name and calling her. You don’t want to risk her wrath later, and texting someone when they’re in the middle of traffic isn’t something you should do. You don’t want to cause an accident by delivering an ill-timed text, and at least by calling her she’ll be able to keep her eyes on the road. It rings for a few moments, and then Alexis picks up.

“WHAT DO YOU WANT!?” She screams into your ear, causing you to nearly drop the phone – you called her to prevent this, why the fuck is she yelling right now!?

“I just called to tell you that I’m in the backstage area, I’m going to be going on soon!” You say back to her crossly, not hiding your irritation at her yelling whatsoever.

“Well isn’t that lovely! I’m still stuck in FUCKING TRAFFIC!” You hear the sound of her car’s horn as she rapidly punches it, causing Cinder to look over with a mixture of slight concern and heavy amusement. “You’re lucky that I’m not gonna raise the rent for this bullshit, you should have called me earlier!”

“If you raised the rent over something as petty as this, I think I’d need to move out…”

You hear another slam of her fist against the horn and a screamed curse at another driver, and then the line goes dead. You stare at it with wide eyes, not quite sure how to process everything that just happened.

“…so, she’s a road rager, huh?” Cinder asks, breaking into laughter. You shrug your shoulders – apparently she is, you certainly didn’t know this beforehand!

You hear the doorknob turn, and you look up to see Killian step back into the room and head towards you as quickly as he can.

“Si-Nova, I must ask as my employers are twisting my arm on this, do you wish to speak to the press in any capacity? I understand that you do not want to take pictures, but you never gave me an answer to whether or not an interview would be okay.”

>Yeah, sure – bring on the press! You have plenty of shit you want to get off your chest right now.

[Gonna call it for the night, hella tired. Apologies for being gone all day, I’m really not liking how sporadic I’m being as of late – real life is a shit. Please give me any critiques, feedback, or comments you have – it helps me improve literally everything, as I always want to make the quest more enjoyable for everyone. Hope you have a great night and see you tomorrow everyone.]

“I’d rather not, thank you.” You respond curtly, reaching over and snatching a soda from the refrigerator. Killian is a bit taken aback by this as he seems to be with literally everything that he doesn’t expect, and struggles to staunch his surprise.

“A-Are you sure, Nova? Do you not want to hype up your fight or…make any comments about recent events?”

You narrow your eyes at the man, and your mouth turns into a frown as you speak your next words.

“I don’t want to talk to the press, nor do I want any pictures.” The way he insisted despite your initial statement sets off some red flags in your head. He sounds like a reporter himself honestly, and one that’s fishing for information – you’ve been down this road years ago, and it seems like they still use the same attempts to this day. Good to know that some things just don’t change! “Please leave me alone, I need to discuss my match with my coach.”

He opens and closes his mouth as he mentally tries to catch up to speed with you, and eventually stands and bows as he goes back to the door and leaves.

“Damn, looks like they’re going at you hard, huh?” Cinder comments idly, having already secured a second and third soda from what you are now referring to as the DRINK BUCKET, since you don’t have a breakfast bucket anymore.

“I wasn’t expecting to have to deal with this right away.” You click your tongue as you eye the curtain warily.

“I didn’t think you’d turn down pictures, though! I even brought you a hairband for your long-ass hair!”

“They’re going to get plenty as soon as I walk onstage, so why bother? I have other things to worry about.”

“Yeesh! You’re so cold today!” She cackles as she reaches and grabs you by your hair, fiddling with it and pulling it into a ponytail. You go to swat her hands away, but the deed is already done. You feel your phone begin to vibrate once more – it seems like you’re getting an unknown call again. You sigh deeply.

The MC needs to relax. He is too angry at everything.
>>
>>3551613
Why are you so certain we're going to lose?
>>
>>3551690
Because we've had two lucky, last-second wins. Law of Sudden Anime Drama says that now we're in public, we're going to lose, and have to prove our non-cheatiness the long way (possibly in some kind of tournament), after being recruited by our previous team leader onto a team with Rock and Cinder. I know my animu! We've had it too good!
>>
>>3551706
...You know that Rock is going to face a trial soon, right?
And that we won both of those matches despite the fact we didn't play in years? We were one of the strongest warscape pro players of all time, we just needed a brush up.
Not everything follows anime tropes.
Besides this will just make the mass media go "retired pro back on the scene!" even more than a livestreamed random match and will get us more heat. If we were to go full animu this would be the time we get sued for something so that our economic well-being is in danger and then we'll actually have to come back to playing for a living. Like either fight the lawyers and join a team for funds or accept a shady deal for a publicity stunt. Either way we feel frustrated and at the same time we rediscover our love for the game. Only then we make our own team. Your plot is not convoluted enough.
>>
>>3551738
There’s no way Rock’s going to go to prison or anything. He’ll pay a fine, get a slap on the wrist, and probably end up joining a team soon, because Plot.

And needed brush-up or not, unless whatever 0phelia’s sent us gives us a massive boost, I doubt a couple of games and a decent weapon isn’t enough to make up for five years of not playing. Especially when we’re relying on dice rolls and not narrative conveniences.

In other words, WE’RE DOOMED. DOOMED TO PUBLIC HUMILIATION. And if we’re lucky, death.
>>
[Good morning! Time to get back to it, hope you’re doing well!]

You look down at your phone angrily and let out a harsh sigh – you know for a fact that this is going to be 0phelia, because literally every unknown caller as of late has BEEN her. She just talked to you earlier, can’t she at least leave you alone for your pre-match shenanigans? And to make matters worse, you can’t even record the calls legally. You answer the phone.

“Yes?” You speak as soon as you accept the call, not bothering to hide your irritation. This is getting a little ridiculous, after all!

“Hello?” You’re surprised when a not at all feminine voice comes through the speaker, and even more so because you actually recognize the voice.

“A-Aidan?” You can’t help but sputter, how the fuck did Fletcher get your phone number!? You’re about to go into another panicked state, however you vaguely recall giving him your number at the end of practice yesterday, so you let the tension drain from your body. Holy shit, you’re a little worked up – looks like this match might be stressing you out more than you had thought.

“Yes. Where are you?” Fletcher’s a man of few words IRL, and that’s a trend that’s apparently kept up to this day.

“I’m at the arena, my match is happening soon I think?”

“But where are you?” You can’t help but raise an eyebrow.

“I’m…in the backstage area? Why?”

“I see. Thank you.”

The line goes dead, and you’re left bewildered. Why do people keep hanging up on you and hardly letting you get a word in!? The rudeness of the modern-day is very clear.

You’re about to lean back when you hear the door to the room open again, and this time a different man with a briefcase steps through. He’s wearing more of a regular suit than Killian – a slick black one with a deep green tie – and he wastes no time in walking over to you with measured steps.

“Nova, I presume?” His tone is straight to the point, just like his suit.

“Yeah.”

“I was sent by Killian. You wished to have your account looked at?”

“Yeah, I have a strange feeling that someone might have messed with it.” You respond simply because you have no reason to lie to him.

“You will be going out in five minutes, and then there will be a five-minute period before you are automatically placed into the match. During the wait period, I will inspect your account. It’s wise of you to have told us about this sooner than later – as I am aware you have a probationary band, it would have resulted in an instant disqualification if something was amiss.”

Well damn, it really is good you told them! If 0phelia actually fucked with the account, not only will you be cleared, but you’ll have even more reasons to hate her! And isn’t that all life’s about, nowadays?

Do you do anything while you wait?

The new guy takes a seat across the room and you recline in your seat – you’re fully ready to wait out the clock, however a thought ends up striking you. Are people online commenting about the match at all? You’re certain that they must be, so you take out your phone once more and go to your browser. All you need to do is type in ‘Nova’ and autocomplete does the rest of the work for you.

>nova rock match
>nova vs rock stream
>nova arcade address
>nova arcade broken into

Damn, it’s a bit surprising that your address is that high up on the list, apparently it ended up being a lot more large-scale than you expected. Regardless, you find the live stream for the event, and you observe the chat while you wait.

>insanit1: GIVE US WHAT WE WANT!!!!
>junebug030: rock has his number lol he was so shit against 0phelia lol
>dippdupp: @junebug030 isn’t she in the tourney? mayb we can get a rematch LMAO
>NIMBUS0: @junebug030 hes practiced since then! i saw him online yesterday!

You wince at that, you forgot that you can see whoever’s online if you look them up in the user directory. Back then, privacy settings were implemented solely because pro players got spammed by fans who wanted to have a match with them, and it was a widespread issue before Auxilia got their act together.

You’re broken out of your musings when you hear a booming voice from outside the curtain, no doubt from the host of the event. Somehow this is more intimidating than the match against 0phelia, but you know it’s because so many people are watching you. With 0phelia you didn’t know she was streaming, this time you’re well aware that many eyes are gonna be on this match.

“EVERYONE! WELCOME TO THE FOURTH BI-ANNUAL BAROQUE TOURNEY!” The crowd nearly causes the ground to rumble with how loud their cheers are, making Cinder’s eyes snap up from her phone. “AS YOU KNOW! TODAY IS GOING TO BE A RIVETING 32-MAN TOURNAMENT FOR THE GRAND PRIZE OF $50,000! BUT BEFORE THAT…WELL, DO I EVEN NEED TO EXPLAIN?”

The crowd somehow grows louder, and you feel yourself tense up. Christ, you’ve forgotten what it’s like to be on the big stage!

“I SEE, LOOKS LIKE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU CAME FOR, HUH? THEN WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, LET’S CALL OUT ONE OF OUR COMPETITORS!” Please don’t be you, please don’t be you, please don’t be-

“AFTER A FIVE-YEAR SILENCE, OUR ONCE DEARLY BELOVED PRODIGY HAS STEPPED BACK ONTO THE SCENE! HOW WILL HE FARE AGAINST SOMEONE OF ROCK’S CALIBER AFTER THIS ABSENCE? THAT’S WHAT WE’RE GOING TO FIND OUT TONIGHT! PLEASE GIVE WELCOME TO…N0VA_C43S4R!”

Music starts blaring over the stage’s speakers, a track that you vaguely recognize as one of Genesys’s old entrance themes. You feel Cinder pat you on the shoulder from behind and give you a little shove towards the curtain.

Before you step through the curtains, you take off your hat and glasses and hand them to Cinder.

“No point in having these on. I’ll be done soon.” You say to her, and she nods in response, giving you a little gesture as if to say, “Well go on, get out there!”. Before you can start digging yourself a mental hole, you walk through the curtains and into the showroom.

The air is hot in here, no doubt because of the stage lights and the sheer amount of people that occupy the room. You glance at them briefly, and from what you can tell there isn’t a single seat not filled. Before you can look away, you hear the crowd erupt in noise – mostly boos, with a few cheers dispersed in-between. You click your tongue – Rock’s the one who physically hurt people, yet you’re still the one getting booed? You find yourself wanting to punt some of these people across the room, but instead you move your head back to the stage and continuing walking across it. Your hands are in your pockets and you’re walking with a noticeable slouch – you don’t really give a fuck what they think, and it shows.

The announcer has dyed blonde hair and looks like a bit of a tool – black jeans with several chains hanging off of them, various tattoos spreading from his arms and up to his chest, and a few piercings that really don’t suit him at all. When you reach him, he eagerly shakes your hand and you’re a bit taken off guard by how forcefully he is.

You lean back and look into the man’s eyes, almost as if you were contemplating what exactly to say. And there are plenty of things that you could tell them – you could berate them for cheering for the guy who destroyed your livelihood, you could be cocky and tell them that your game play will speak for itself, or you could even stay quiet and let the boos wash over you. Fortunately, you don’t give a shit about any sort of appearances, so you lean forward and speak one word into the microphone offered to you.

“Nah.”

You didn’t expect the crowd to have much of a reaction to that, but an interesting one occurs nonetheless. A lot of the boos start to increase, but you can actually hear the sounds of cheers start to break through, as well as the general sounds of people getting hyped. You shrug – that’s all you really have, you guess.

“CONFIDENT WORDS FROM OUR PRODIGY, NO? LET’S BRING OUT HIS OPPONENT!” The boos abruptly shift to cheers, and you grumble to yourself. “THIS IS HIS LAST MATCH FOR THE TIME BEING, DUE TO WHAT HE DID…BUT WILL HE MAKE IT A GOOD ONE!? GIVE IT UP FOR ROCK!”

You see the curtain move on the opposite side of the stage, and there he is in all of his glory – the crowd fucking lose their shit over him, and you hear the sounds of people pounding their hands on their armrests. The announcer literally just referenced what he did to you! What the fuck, though!?

“ANY WORDS FOR THE AUDIENCE, ROCK?” The man shakes Rock’s over-sized hand, and unlike you, he leans down immediately.

“I will crush this cheater underfoot.” Rock says, being sure to look up into your eyes. The crowd goes ballistic as expected, and you roll your eyes. You almost want to make a quip back at him, but you don’t know if it’s a good plan.

>>
You don’t feel like responding to the bait, so instead you do your best to look as bored as humanly possible. Some people in the crowd notice your change of expression, and you can hear them let out “oooooohs” as if you’re intentionally trying to spur Rock on. You aren’t, you just can’t muster up the effort to pander to the crowd – your mind is too busy racing over everything that’s about to happen.

“WONDERFUL! AS YOU ALL KNOW, ALL 1V1 MATCHES HAVE AN HOUR’S TIME LIMIT! THIS WILL BE PLAYED WITH COMPETITIVE RULES, SO BOTH OF OUR COMPETITORS WILL BE SHOWING THEIR SKILLS IN FULL FORCE! ARE YOU AS EXCITED AS ME, AUDIENCE?” You start to feel the stage shift under your feet, and you look behind you to see that the floor is beginning to part, two oblong structures starting to emerge from the stage. You’re able to ascertain that these are VR consoles, and they seem to be sleeker compared to the models in the arcade. You vaguely recall Killian mentioning these were specifically made for tournaments, so you’ll chalk it up to that.

The announcer puts a hand around both of your waists and pulls you closer to him, then taking you by the wrist and raising your arm. He does the same to Rock, and the crowd continues to go wild.

“THEN LET’S GET IT STARTED!” He drops your arm and steps back, making a grandiose gesture towards the machines. Normally this is the part where the opponents shake hands in a form of respect, but neither of you go to do so – you both turn and walk towards your respective machines.

You take one last look at Rock – he’s looking right back at you, and you take the opportunity to throw a little smirk his way. Might as well try to throw him off his game somewhat, right? He scowls and pulls the helmet on, and judging by his body going limp, he’s now logging in.

You let out a grumble as you press back into the seat, grabbing your own helmet and putting it on. The sound of the crowd’s cheering slowly fades away as you’re taken away from the stage, mind uploading to Warscape once again.

You hope that Fletcher’s training will be enough.

[Alright, so it’s a little bit earlier than usual but I’m archiving the thread right now! I'm having a lot of trouble writing these, and I’m attributing that fact to burnout – as well as that, I’ve noticed that my quality has dipped majorly due to it and I’m not a fan of that at all. So, I’m gonna take a moderate break from writing this, and we’re going to pick up in the tournament lobby. I’m sorry for leaving off at such an inconvenient spot! So, I’m going to head off for a few days and do something other than writing, as well as plan the fight against Rock (there’s a lot of little nuances that need to be fleshed out for it). It’s not gonna be a three-week absence this time, but it may be a week or so. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading so far and have a good one anons – see you when I get back, and sorry once more.]

And so Cirno went off to fight in the Quill Wars...
Never give up! Never surrender!

Now that I think about it Fletcher is the most kindhearted guy ever. We destroyed the team he lead and liked so much that he's no longer willing to play professionally without it, and not only does he hold nothing against us but years later he dedicates a whole day to training us when we ask for it completely out of the blue.

Wasn't he the one who provided the hax in the first place? Maybe he's trying to atone for it now, but he's not without his own flaws.

if I remember right, it was their old coach. fletcher was the captain, but we don't know if he had anything to do with the cheats or not.

Found the post where this was described and you're right. The coach was the supplier (assuming coach != captain).

Pretty sure if he was involved with the cheat it would have been mentioned

And the week has passed.

Thank you for reading the previous threads anon, thank you for learning how much of a bitch she is and not becoming an 0phelia apologist.

Excellent taste, anon. Excellent taste.

I’m just glad I feel like people are leaning to making our own team as a giant middle finger to her
>>
I wish this quest was alive

That would piss her off the most

I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned but I honestly think 0phelia might have a severe case of autism
