Welcome to the Fort Ticonderoga Military School for Officers and Thaumaturgists. Located in the High Peaks Wilderness of upstate New York, it's a vaunted academy, the single largest and most prestigious school for mages in the US, as well as an actual fortress. There are only three ways to reach the fortress. The first, a monorail that leads to the nearby city of Albany. The second, approaching by air. And the third, hiking through the wilderness that surrounds the school for miles. It's the single most secure location on the planet for mages to practice their craft, before they eventually serve their country.

The year is 1999, and the turn of the millennium approaches. Your name is Marcus, and you have been a student at the school for one year, and you have already distinguished yourself among your peers, for you immense physical and magical power. A juggernaut among Magi, you started the year off with a literal bang, as an assassination attempt caved in the building you were in. You also got a junior, who you attempted to toughen up.

Last time, you were asked to work with your rival, Angela Harper, to investigate the assassination attempt that was possibly targeted at the two of you.
>Fine. You suppose you can work with her, if briefly.

Groaning, you pinch the bridge of your nose, throwing a hand up in exasperation, letting it fall back down, hitting your thigh. "Fine, I guess I can work with her. For now. If she doesn't get too annoying."

Angela immediately fires back, "And I suppose I can deign to work with this thuggish buffoon, if he doesn't get too aggressive. " Gritting your teeth, and grinding them together, you just about call it quits, then and there, but Lt. Christoff holds up a hand, and you pay attention to your superior and teacher.

"Please, please. Calm down, we will be looking into this, but as I said before, it would be good for both of your military careers should you catch these infiltrators. And as a staff member of the Academy, it's my job to encourage student growth. Do try and comply, will you?" You grumble, but your lack of any barbs in Angela's general direction seems enough, and Lt. Christoff gives you a small grin. "Excellent. I expect great things from the two of you in the future." Standing up, and nodding to the both of you, Christoff leaves, closing the door behind him.

Sitting in silence, you eventually look over at Angela, who already has a notebook out, and is furiously scribbling notes down. You don't really care what she's writing, but she notices you looking, and scowls, but says, "Well, what?"

>"Where did you keep that thing? You wear a skirt."
>"What are you writing?"
>(Leave.)
>"Look. I hate this as much as you. But we gotta work together."

Squinting, you look at Angela all over, trying to figure something out. Yes, you came right from class, but the girls uniform doesn't have pockets, at least, none you can see. Yeah, it's a bit of a tangent, but you have a train of thought, and this derailed it thoroughly. "Where did you keep that thing? You wear a skirt." Your eyes linger on her thighs. At least she's good to look at, even if she is a raging bitch to you.

This causes her to look up at you, confused. "Huh?" Seems she was really engrossed in her notes.

"I said, where'd you keep the notebook? I didn't bring your bag with you, I'm not your damn gopher." Freezing in the headlights, you get to see a rare face on Angela. Embarrassment.

Flustered, she flounders. "Ah, I... We have an inside pocket in the jacket, you know. I don't do... whatever you think I do." Keeping a blank stare, she eventually caves, and says, "I have a... holster for it, on my thigh." You blink, and then almost double over with laughter. "Stop, you oaf! It's not funny"

Pointing at her, still laughing, you say, "What a fucking dork!" This causes her to grow red with anger, and she lashes out at you with a magical burst. You don't even need to form a rune to let it wash over you, doing nothing. This just causes her to get even madder.

However, after a few minutes, you both calm down, and settle into a serious discussion about the assassination attempt.

"So, what ARE you writing?"

Sighing, face still flushed, Angela shows you. It's a list of suspects, and surprisingly, she has crossed out your name and hers. When you look to her, as if to confirm what you're seeing, she simply shrugs. "You're too dumb to plot something like an assassination. You'd just march up to me and break my neck like a barbarian, if you wanted to kill me." .... Huh.

Scribbling the word 'Strategy' in her notebook, she looks to you, as if contemplating something. "... I suppose I should let you join in on the decision-making process, if only so I don't shoulder all the blame when it inevitably goes horribly wrong. What kind of approach would you suggest? I've got a few written already."

>>
>>3595635
Somewhat, yes. But the way I interpret it is, in this context, you shake down the student body, while staying wary for the next attack, not going out of your way to look for clues, other than what your fellow students can tell you.

If it helps, imagine the events happening sequentially. Nonaction after action, etc etc.

That works.

You decide that any search would be useless; if they hid from the staff guarding this facility, they would be more than able to evade you. So, Angela and you hatch a plan. Each day, you will watch each other's backs, prepared for the worst, covering each other's blind spots. Angela stays on the lookout, and you are prepared to retaliate, 24/7.

First, however, you must shake down students who were nearby the first time. Angela, having received a list of students in nearby classes, leads you to each and every one student, where you proceed to browbeat them into telling you what they know.

Sorry for the short post, this probably could've been included in the vote, but I thought I could have more written. As it stands, I just have to get the post out there.

Unfortunately, you find no conclusive evidence. Everyone was either unable to see what happened till afterwards, or trapped under the rubble themselves. Everyone, that is, except for one. A Jack Forrester, the closest thing that such a prestigious academy might have to a delinquent (besides yourself,) reportedly saw something, according to his friend. Leaving Angela to thank him, and smooth things over, you look for the student in question. You don't know Jack that well, but he seems to think that he's your rival, or something. Not quite as strong as you, but still stronger than the average Magus, he's had a constant Napoleon complex when it comes to you for the last year. You don't see that changing anytime soon.

Finally finding him after several minutes of searching, (during which Angela caught up with you,) you approach to see him training his magic, practicing several runes on the field. You and Angela look at each other, sharing a glance, and you decide to take the initiative, walking towards him with intent, calling out, "Hey! Jack! C'mere a sec!" You see his eyes flash with annoyance, and he stomps towards you, teeth gritted.

"Yeah, Marcus, whaddaya wan-" He does a double take when he sees Angela next to you, who frowns at the sudden attention, muttering something under her breath. "I thought the two of you hated each other?" You roll your eyes, and cross your arms, tapping your foot impatiently.

"I don't have all day. You're the last one on the list to have been around the attack. Do you know anything or not?"

This causes Jack to immediately go on the defensive, Jersey accent becoming prominent. "The fuck do you mean? You accusing me of somethin'?"

You growl, and prepare to retort, but Angela puts a hand on your shoulder, giving you pause, and says, "Sorry, he didn't mean it like that. What he meant to say was, did you see anything suspicious, or odd at all? Other than the collapsed schoolroom, that is." Angela isn't the most socially adept Magus, but her platitude seems to have placated Jack, who scratches his chin, contemplatively.

"Ahh... well... I fuckin'... I probably shouldn't tell you guys before I tell the Staff, buuuuut, since you ask..." He shrugs. "I didn't see her face, but I did see a girl run away from the building, right before it collapsed on your heads. Happy now?" Nodding, you turn on your heel, and look to Angela, who is writing this down in her notebook.

>"Got any suspects, know anyone who hates you?"
>"So our bomber is a girl."
>(Look over her shoulder, see what she's writing.)
>Write-in.

And with that, you conclude your incredibly short investigation, and await the next attack or incident, wherever it may come from.

Leaning over Angela's shoulder, you attempt to read what she's writing, but her hand is in the way, so you snatch it out of her grasp deftly, smirking as she squawks, undignified, and attempts to grab it back. Holding it up high, out of reach, you easily read it as she attempts to grab it back from you, without using magic. It reads;

-Saboteur
-F
-Exp. or Thau.
-M n a sus.

Looking down at Angela, squinting at her with blank eyes, you say, "What are these... chickenscratches? Do they mean anything?"

Angela finally snaps, and sends an Imp, in the form of a winged viper, to grab it back, which you allow, amused. "So? Mind telling me what they mean?" She sighs, closing her notebook, and setting it in her 'holster', lets the imp curl around her index finger, which she points at you.

Speaking as if she's explaining something to a child, she says, "The saboteur was female, and she utilized Thaumaturgy, or mundane explosives." At this, she stops speaking, looking at anywhere but you.

You hold up a hand, frowning. "Wait, what was that last one, then? Mum nah a suss?" She sighs overdramatically, and looks down at her feet.

"Marcus... is no longer a suspect." You immediately grin, smugly.

"I'm sorry, but what was that? Say it again?" She huffs, looking pointedly away from you, and crosses her arms across her chest, angry.

"I will most certainly not. However, I have my reasons. Mostly because you're too dumb for any intrigue." Well that's... something.

Sighing wearily, you ask, "Well, if I'm not one, got any suspects, anyone who hates you? Other than me, of course." You flash a shit-eating grin, much to her annoyance. "We've got shit for information." At this, Angela shakes her head.

"I have people who hate me, OTHER than you," She glares at you, and continues, "But I don't think that anyone would try anything on school grounds..." She appears to think about something briefly, but shakes her head, moving on. "We have to stick together, you do realize this, correct?" You nod, to which she replies, "I hate it too. When we catch this assassin, I'll be sure to introduce him to my 'friends' of the Outer Being variety."

Moving on to your next class, Angela walking silently by your side, you eventually come across a peculiar sight. John, wearing a simple smile, stands before Alexis, who looks up at him, worried frown across her face. As soon as she sees you, Marcus, her face brightens in acknowledgement and relief that you're alright, and before you know it, she's hurrying over to you with that little nerd run that she has.

"M-Marcus! You're ok! I mean, John was telling me that you would be, and..." She trails off when she sees Angela. "Who... is this?"

Not even looking at Angela, you say, "A bitch." The reaction that Alexis and Angela both give is priceless.

Coughing, Angela gives her best smile, (not very good,) and says, "Ah, my name is Angela Harper, I am assisting Marcus here with a private matter, who might you be?"

Drawing back from a new person, Alexis looks down, saying, "O-oh, my name's Alexis." This pains you physically to watch, and you see John's face in his palm, shaking his head.

>"Yes, I'm fine. Is there anything you needed, Alexis?"

Gritting your teeth at the presence of the softest Magi you've ever seen, you resolve to be nice.....er. She did push herself to her limits today, after all, even if her limits were pathetically small. Leaning forward and bending slightly to meet her at eye level, you say, "Yes, I'm fine. Is there anything you needed, Alexis?"

This causes her to perk up, and turn to you, with a slight burst of energy. "O-oh! Yeah, I was just wondering if there was anything I could do for you, since you were attacked, and all..."

Angela, smiling brightly, says, "Well I'm so glad you asked! I need someone to carry my-" You hold up a finger in front of the prodigy's face.

"She wasn't talking to you." Sighing, you shake your head. "Nah, I'm fine, as you can see, and besides, you don't know me, we literally just met today." At this, Alexis looks crestfallen. "At this point, I'm just wondering what you want from me. Because if it's to go easy on ya when we train, not happening." She begins to protest, so you flick her in the head. "Go to class, Alexis."

She walks off obediently, if a bit dejected, and soon disappears into the halls. Turning to Alexis, you say, "See you after class;" and then you waltz off to your next subject, John in tow, which happens to be Physical Tempering, another subject you don't think much about. As you get changed in the locker room with John, he asks, slyly, "So, was that cute lil' thing your junior for the year?"

Annoyed, you say, "Yeah, and she's weak as fuck. Says she's good at Thaumatology, but we can't see if she's telling the truth until we're on the Mountain Trip." Changing into the PT uniform, gym shorts and a grey t-shirt (rolled up to emulate a tank top, in your case,) you do the basic stretches, like every workout of yours, and then head into the gym with John.

"Always focused on that 'magical potential' of yours, arent'cha, Marcus? Sometimes you just need to chill out and relax, enjoy the cute girl that you're obligated to help around the school." Scowling, you start doing jumping jacks with the group, as the PT coach barks out orders, and you oblige, leading the group with your physical prowess.

"I have... responsibilities, John."

"Yeah, but it doesn't mean you have to focus on them all day, every day."

"Kinda does."

"Mmmmmnope, pretty sure it doesn't."

"Fuck you."

"No, fuck you, I insist." Laughing, you and John continue joking throughout the class, not even batting an eye when the Aspected Runes activate, placing intense gravitational pressure on everyone. PT, fortunately, is one of those classes which allows the students to talk while in it.

Finishing the trial, you exit the indoor gym into the locker room, and, having not even broken a sweat, you simply get changed. And with that, your day is done. Heading out on your own, you meander over to your room in the dormitories, enjoying the sunset, the breeze, and the smell of the woods around Fort Ticonderoga.

Looking up at the blonde girl, you simply give her a long, suspicious stare. She blinks at you, once, then twice, smirking all the while. Eventually, you say, slowly, "Could call it that. You really enjoy flyin', huh?" You cross your arms, and stare at her, as if challenging any statement she could ever possibly make.

She smiles brightly. "Yep!" At this, she does a loop-de-loop midair, and comes to a stop, hovering before you. "Probably my favorite part of being magic." At this, she points to you. "And what about you? What do you enjoy the most about magic?" Still suspicious, you don't say anything, until she frowns, putting a finger on her cheek, "I thought we had some camaraderie, Marcus, but I suppose that if you can't tell me, I guess I have to remember your rooftop meal for my report..." Looking at her, eyes flashing angrily, you prepare to retort, when she says, "Just kidding."

Gritting your teeth, you internally curse at the fact that almost every girl in your life is impossibly difficult, and then answer, "Potential. I like feeling the power build, until I release it as Force or into Runes." Your fists clench, arms still crossed. "Why do you ask? Trying to find out my weaknesses?"

At this, the girl places a single hand on her chest, over her heart. "I am shocked, appalled, and flabbergasted at the accusations being thrown around here. Imagine, thinking that someone as beautiful as myself is a traitor! But you are on the mark with that one, at least, partially." Confused, but wary, you cock your head, but also step forward, fists clenched, ready for anything. "The higher-ups have set me on watchdog duty, it seems." At your questioning expression, she laughs, and says, "You can't believe that the military didn't know that something was going on, right? This is the primo school for Magi on North America, they're gonna have an idea that something is going down."

You accept this reasoning, but something's bothering you. "What's your name?"

The blonde girl gives a mock bow. "Scarlett Jackson, at your service."
