Sorry about the late start this evening gents, doggos wanted to play. When 120lbs of Doberman wants to play- well, you play. haha! Got most of the school shit sorted, it won't impact the running schedule at all, at least not this semester. I'll be looking for a part time gig while I'm going, so we're not quite in the clear either way, but we'll see. Of course, my career as a streamer could take off, too, haha! Archive here http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=Strike%20Witches%202016 As usual, I'll point out that the original SW2016can be ignored- only the reboot threads are worth paying attention to here. I think that's about it, so let's get going! ======================================================Normally, the MIU isn't really all that notable when you connect to it. There's the faint murmur of the AI of course, and the sudden flood of information delivered by it, but there's nothing there- it's like waking up in the morning, almost. Now, though, it seems crowded- there's two other personalities crammed in there with you, though 'you' is kind of a fuzzy concept at the moment. It's firming up of course- you're pretty sure it's your training that knows that that's part of the critical role of the AI- to prevent mental bleedover from getting beyond acceptable limits and keep the personalities and minds of the crew relatively separate. Of course, nothing's ever a faultless system- and wyvern crews generally tend to start having almost eerie synchronicity in their ground lives as well. Still, for what feels like hours, it's like picking up everything in your house after it's been blown over by a hurricane- and, you know, you're bound to pick up a few things that maybe aren't yours, too. The fact that the ground crew doesn't sever the connection- which, you know, they can do- and have done, in particularly ugly first attempts, means that there's nothing that's too far out of boundary limits. Eventually, though, you're pretty sure you've got yourself put back together- though there's now very much the impression of being watched. “Oh, good.” A voice intones- you can't quite pin it down. “Here I am, stuck with a cat and a wolf. This is either going to be amazing or tragic. I'm your ship's AI.” An image coalesces in your head- A crow on a tree, who looks at you kind of disapprovingly. “I think I've got you two sorted out, considering how different you seem to be, it wasn't that hard.”
You blink as your senses start making sense again- you rapidly bring your breathing back under control, though the technique you use to re-center yourself isn't one you can exactly remember learning. “Well, that's a good sign, at least.” The AI says. “You're not in danger of giving yourself a grand mal or a heart attack anymore. You know who you are?” “Lieutenant Morgan Laroux-Bishop.” You respond by reflex. “Good! Looks like I've managed to reassign everything where it belongs again.” The AI seems genuinely pleased with itself. “With the opening riot out of the way, you know my role in the aircraft, yes?” Explain it to me again. You bridge the crew's links, provide initial sensor interpretation, and form a third set of eyes in the aircraft.
>>3605314>[x] Explain it to me again. It's been a hot minute, I could use the exposition dump.

>>3605314>[X] You bridge the crew's links, provide initial sensor interpretation, and form a third set of eyes in the aircraft. We've only been around Wyverns for about 80% of our lives, not like we haven't picked up on most of the details.

>>3605314>[x] You bridge the crew's links, provide initial sensor interpretation, and form a third set of eyes in the aircraft.Hello AI, what is your name?
ok, votes called!
[x] You bridge the crew's links, provide initial sensor interpretation, and form a third set of eyes in the aircraft. “You bridge the crew's links, provide initial sensor interpretation, and form a third set of eyes in the aircraft.” You respond, vaguely aware Kyou is having a conversation with the AI at the same time too. “That's most of it.” The AI admits. “As a matter of fact, I'm keeping you and Kyou separated for the moment to let you re-adjust. And our sensors are offline anyway. I'll also assist her with defensive and offensive electronic warfare.” It pauses for a minute. “And I'm sure you're both back together, at least mostly.”“Mostly?” You ask, and get the rough equivalent of a shrug. “All I'm going to say is you already spoke Japanese.” The AI responds. “but you may find her french has improved somewhat. Also she knows.” You'd ask what she knows, but the AI elects that point to start actually bridging the two of you. While it's nowhere near as invasive- at least, not on a surface level- as the older VDNI system was, an MIU link works far more subtly and is more pervasive overall. You won't exactly be able to read each other's thoughts, like you've heard both Merlin and your dad talk about occasionally, but you know that it's also entirely possible you'll walk out knowing far more of the deep secrets of the other person- enough that it's a major sticking point in training. If you don't trust the other member of your team with everything- literally- you don't fly with them. Of course, your instructors also pointed out that no one in the history of the program has ever not been catastrophically embarrassed coming out of the first link. “Morgan?” Kyou asks- her voice kinda just popping into your head, instead of over the helmet speakers. “Ah, excellent. Is this not amazing? Truly, your feelings for your aunt are well founded! ” If a bird could smirk, your ship's AI would be giving you one now. “Sorry.” It says, in a way that very much indicates it is not- and that this isn't something it can help. “If it's any consolation you should have a few of her deepest darkest secrets in your head now too. If you're wondering, both of you are stable and well within what I'm informed is optimal range, especially for this phase of the process.” It preens a bit. “And I didn't even have to work that hard. Maybe this won't be so bad.” “Our aircraft needs a name.” Kyou says, and the crow in your head nods. “Shall we name it Hraesvlgr as you had suggested? If we do, I may demand concessions later.” You know exactly what she means- if you get to pick the name, she wants to pick the paint. Yes. And you can pick how it's painted. Uh... noo, we can talk about it.

[x] Uh... noo, we can talk about it. “Just respond.” The AI says. “And I'll translate it across to her”“We can talk about it.” You respond. “Oh, good!” She says. “I had hoped. We could agree on a name, I am not particularly fond of Hraesvlgr.” “So what are you thinking?” “Muninn” she says without a pause. “I believe it fits more, and remains within your Norse mythology.”“Mind?” The AI quips, and it's head tilts as it thinks. “That's not too bad. Better than Amaterasu.” “That is a perfectly valid and acceptable name.” Kyou responds. “For a raven? Oh for the love of... no. no it is not.” The AI responds. Muninn works, yeah. I was thinking … (Write in!)

>>3606170> I was thinking Morrigan from irish mythology
[x] Muninn works, yeah. “Muninn works.” You respond. The AI nods. “Muninn. Alright.” It says. “Is there anything else you need or-” It pauses, then tilts it's head again. “Nevermind. Looks like they're going to get you out.” “Morgan, Kyou.” Merlin says over the radio a minute later. “You're done in there. Disconnect and standby in the cockpit, crew will be up to get you out.” “See you soon.” Muninn says, then blanks out- it's still there, of course, but it's no longer bother to project any sort of avatar for itself. “And nice meeting you.” You disconnect a second later- Muninn will be staying online, of course- now that it's fully up, but since you're on a major post, it's ground power will be provided without use of the generators- they'll just hook it into the grid here. Leaning back in the ejection seat you wait- you can hear the crew escorting Kyou out, but you're more worried about how flat your chest is all of a sudden- something's definitely missing there. It's only a few seconds before there's a pair of ground crew up to help you out- normally you'd have not needed the help, but in this case you're grateful for the hand- you feel incredibly clumsy, and nearly trip over the canopy rail as you step out. You would have, in fact, if not for the crew supporting you by the arm. They help you down the stairs too, where Merlin and the shrinks stand with Kyou- she's got someone supporting her too, you notice. “Welcome back, Lieutenant.” One of the shrinks says. “How do you feel?” “A little strange sir.” “Feel out of my skin, sir”
>>3606393>[X] “A little strange sir.”

>>3606393>[X] “Feel out of my skin, sir”
ok, votes called
[x] “Feel out of my skin, sir”“I feel out of my skin, sir” You admit, still kind of confused as to where your chest got to- you did have some, and they were pretty nice, you're pretty sure. He nods understandingly. “That's not uncommon.” He says. “How do you feel otherwise?” “Not too bad.” You say, looking over at Kyou- who looks torn between wanting to blush and look away and thinking you should be doing the same. “I, uh. Know some things I might not have otherwise about my partner.” “Not uncommon. Are you two comfortable returning to your quarters together, or do you feel you'd prefer to stay in observation?” He asks. Kyou shakes her head, though she does so with a frown. “I believe I am fine, though I do feel rather too short.” “Lieutenant?” The other one asks. You shake your head. “I think I'm ok, sir.” You say, and he nods. “Very well. You'll be monitored by the duty marines at your quarters.” He says, looking over at the other man, who nods. “We know that there's a lot you both have to process. Our number is on the wall next to the phone in your quarters, along with our personal contact information. If you want to talk about anything, please, call.” He says. “We know that marines aren't always the best conversationalists, and sometimes it can get awkward.” You nod, as does Kyou. “That's all, then.” He says. “But really, if you want to talk, call us. We don't care if it's at oh dark thirty, give us a ring. We'll be happy to talk.” “I don't have anything for them.” Merlin says. “Though I'll be by your quarters later to discuss the technical work going on and flight tomorrow, if you're signed off.” Kyou nods at the same time you do. “Ok, get back to quarters, and get some rest.” She says, dismissing you. You're driven back to operations, though by the time you're out of the cart, the clumsiness and dizziness seem to have largely abated. Kyou, for her part, doesn't look much the worse for wear, though she, like you, looks a little pale and out of it. The ride back to quarters is quiet- and once you're there, Kyou wastes little time in retreating to her room and throwing herself on the bed- though she leaves the door open, and appears to be tired enough that she's out as soon as her head's on the pillow. You could do with a nap yourself, you know- you've got a headache building behind your eyes, and you feel faintly sick to your stomach. It'll mean cold leftovers- or ordering out- but at the same time, you're not sure you trust yourself to cook right now, either. I could really use a nap, yeah. Duty calls- I'll just make a cup of tea and start in on dinner.
This is gonna be our overnight vote, guys. Been having a lot of trouble maintaining my energy lately, Which tells me I'm wildly out of shape, haha! probably time to start my old morning run route again- the advantages of moving home! anyway, till tomorrow gents, cheers!

>>3607118Oh, it most definitely did. the question is, did Kyou get the same kind of treatment?
>>3605748>“All I'm going to say is you already spoke Japanese.” The AI responds. “but you may find her french has improved somewhat. Also she knows.”From Post #3589856 in Thread 10:>“Maman.” You greet her. “This isn't exactly the best time.” You say in French- reasonably sure Kyou doesn't speak the language. Given the look she gives you, either she doesn't- or she's willing to play along. Well, I guess turnabout is fair play after all, but you all should be aware that Kyou probably understood most of our talk with maman.
>>3607532Considering the filename in>>3605748 I think what Ghost meant is that she didn't speak French before the link but she is at least passable in it now. Also I'm pretty sure that the "Also she knows." isn't referring to that but instead to our crush on Merlin which Ghost has heavily implied isn't nearly as platonic on our end as we insist that it is.
>>3606710Hey Ghost, what did we learn about Kyou that we couldn't possibly have known otherwise? WHAT DO WE KNOW!?
>>3607551That might be the case, but the 'her french has improved somewhat' implies to me that she had a decent grasp on the language, but wasn't fluent like Morgan is. Especially with the first part of that sentence being 'All I'm going to say is you already spoke Japanese," I think the implication is pretty cut and dry.As for the 'Also she knows' part, yeah that really isn't up for interpretation imo.
>>3607582See he describes Muninn as a "Snarky raven AI" so that combined with the way Muninn phrased that makes me think that she didn't spreak French at all outside of "Bonjour.", "Si vou plait" and"Omlette due fromage" .
>>3607712>Omlette due fromageI liked that episode of Dexter's Laboratory.
>>3606706> Duty calls- I'll just make a cup of tea and start in on dinner. It will take more than this to put us out of action.

[x] I could really use a nap, yeah. You waffle on the point a little- part of you is sure you need to make sure you still know how to work in the kitchen- but at the same time, you know as well as anybody that if you are as out of it as you think you are, cooking might not be the best idea. You head back to your bedroom, closing the door quietly and going to sleep as soon as you've stretched out- you've always been a fast sleeper, but you must have been flat exhausted to be out so quickly. You're woken shortly later by the sounds of a knock at the door- one that, as you stand to answer, Kyou handles. You can't quite make out what's said, but there's more than one set of footsteps that ender, and as you sit up, the lights flip on and you're greeted with the faces of a doc and one of the duty marines, carrying a bag and one of those portable vital signs readers. “Sorry about this el-tee.” The doc says. “I'll let ya get back to sleep, but we gotta check your vitals real fast.” You nod and he hooks up the little fingertip sensor and the blood pressure sleeve, watching the screen and nodding, noting the reading down on a pad. “Not bad. Sorry about waking you up, but it's procedure. Sometimes it takes a while for your body to really react to what happens. You feeling alright?” You nod- the headache is mostly gone, it seems, and you don't feel sick at all. “Good. You look pretty good, though your blood pressure and heart rate are still a little over your usual. If they stay up we'll have to address it, but it's normal for the first forty eight or so. We'll be back in about six hours.” He says. “If you need them, motrin is fine, I'll leave a bottle here on the counter. Take a couple, but if that doesn't knock back any headaches, call me, alright?” You nod. 1/2
>>3608513Well, I mean, every second update image Ghost has posted in this thread has been very fine shots of Kyou in swimwear/underwear with a clear line of sight on her lady bits, so... yeah, here's your call mate.
“Good. See you in a bit, Lieutenant.” He says. “We're gonna go check on your backseater, you can go back to sleep if you want.” You nod, and the two of them step back out into the living room, where you can hear the doc talking to Kyou. As he does so, you flip your wrist over and check your watch- you've been asleep for a good four or five hours, and it's closing in on dinnertime. You get up, and briefly contemplate getting dressed again- then decide that it's really not worth the effort and you're not indecent anyway, and step out into the living room as the doc and the marine leave. Kyou looks up at you- frowns very briefly, then nods. You sit down on the couch nearby and for a moment, there's just silence between you two. “That was-” She starts, then stops and shakes her head. “I understand, now, why they are so intent on warning us during training of the difficulty.” She says. “It is too late to go back now, but-” She pauses again. “I feel as if, perhaps, we should discuss what we know, now, to be true.” If there's anything you want to discuss, absolutely. Otherwise I think we're fine. Let me go put some coffee on, we may be up a while.

[x] Let me go put some coffee on, we may be up a while. “Let me go put some coffee on, we may be up a while.” You say, standing, and she nods once. You put a pot on quickly, and stand in the kitchen as it brews, then pour two mugs and bring one out for her. She takes it with another nod, and looks up at you after taking a sip. “That's better.” She says with a sigh. “I-” She pauses again. “I am unsure where to begin.” She says, after a moment. “That was possibly one of the worst experiences I have ever faced, and I know the same is true of you.” You nod- she's not wrong. “And yet, I also know now I can trust you implicitly.” She continues. “Though I don't know why I know that.” She frowns. “Is the same true for you?” You nod- You do know, down even in the part of your head that questions everyone's motives- even your sisters- that ultimately, like them, you can trust Kyou. You don't know why- and you have your suspicions of why you know that, of course, but you know it all the same. At the same time, you know that she's right about you- that is, she can trust you completely. She nods. “As I suspected. They mentioned that there would either be a feeling of instant and total trust and affection, or one of utter revulsion after the first link.” She sighs. “It is a relief to find we are in the first category.” She ventures a small smile. “Of course, with that said, I am still not sure if I agree with the witch instructors that if you do find yourself in the first category, it becomes incredibly difficult to keep your hands off your partner.” You laugh- you've heard the same thing from the IPs in the program. Of course, you didn't discount it- you know witches, afterall- but at the same time, you know yourself. "Of course, I am still an imperial princess." She says with a smile. "And there are some things even I cannot ignore. My behavior regarding that is one." The smile falls off her face a second later and a frown twitches across her face again, and she pauses, then shakes her head. "I am unsure how to continue. I know that the concerns I have are of little consequence and will fade rapidly, but I still must ask- what do you think of me?" I know I can trust you, and that's more than enough for me. I'm still not sure, but I'm not worried about us having problems long-term.

So if she’s a test tube witch, the link should provide the knowledge confirm that? [x] I know I can trust you, and that's more than enough for me. You shrug. "I know I can trust you, and that's more than enough for me." She smiles. "And I know now that you do not trust easily at all." She pauses again, then nods, and looks down at her mug of coffee. "I was afraid I would need this far more." You nod- though you do take a sip of your coffee. "How was your nap?" You ask. She smiles again. "Oh, it was excellent!" She says. "I apologize for my silence beforehand, but I was having trouble focusing. I- ah, " She pauses and blushes, looking away. "I felt I was missing an important part of my anatomy. And wasn't comfortable at all in my body. I feel much better now, however." You nod, looking back over the back of the couch as there's a knock at the door. "That, I suspect, is your aunt." Kyou says. "No doubt." You respond, standing to get the door. "I'll set the cake out." Kyou says, also standing and heading into the kitchen. Kyou was right- Merlin stands in the door, dressed in regular civilian clothes with an overnight bag in her hand. "Hi Morgan." She greets, returning your hug. "How do you feel?" "Not bad, auntie." You say, noting that Kyou is very, very clearly checking out your Aunt's backside from her position in the kitchen. She stops when you look over at her, though. "Morgan made cake, Merlin." Kyou calls from the dining room. "We were waiting for you before we tried it." "Cake?" Merlin asks, looking at you. "Oh, yes, you did say something about that. Let me put my things down." She says as she turns to drop her bag in your room, which she clearly intends to use during her overnight stay. Kyou shrugs at you when you look over at her- a 'don't blame me' kind of movement. You elect to not say anything, and instead pull out a gallon of milk and three glasses. "What kind of cake?" Merlin asks, emerging from your room in her old MIT shirt- she must have changed, as she's also switched into shorts that are a little too short for her, but are reasonably acceptable for wear around the house. "Chocolate." You say. "Chocolate?" She asks, sitting down. "That cake looks familiar. Did you find a new recipe?" Old recipe, auntie. Kind of. Found a different recipe book.

>>3609454> Old recipe, auntie. >>3609480>>3609571A lot of players like her and the ooc discussion has had her brought up in such a way in pretty much every thread. It could easily be said that ignoring many players' comments on her in the story posts would also be railroading. I think it's a new and interesting relationship.
>>3609936>I think it's a new and interesting relationship.Would you like to go into detail on that? Mostly so that I can at least understand a personal viewpoint in favor of the MerMor ideal.
>>3609936OOC comments don't equal votes.
>>3609942Sure. In character (after a vote), Morgan has expressed that she was the reason why he became so interested in the Wyvern in the first place. He obviously finds her to be interesting. Perhaps he even looks up to her in a way. He also has consistently taken care of her; letting her sleep in, cooking for her, going over to see her over other options. Now, this could just be platonic closeness (and votes may end up reflecting this), but she is also obviously attractive. The age gap isn't that bad. Wasn't she 15 in the first quest? So she is probably right around 40. That isn't exactly out there for someone in their mid-20s, especially with magic anti-aging involved. She'd be considered a catch to just about anyone. A famous war hero who is also an attractive genius with similar interests to you? I see it like a childhood crush where reality hits and for once she is actually still very real and pursuable. For her? Different personalities aside, he is likely as capable as Frank without the big brother complex and handful of dominant older witches vying for his affections. Any girl in her position probably imagined being with someone like Frank. What did she get instead? Her first relationship was with a seemingly nice guy that ended up getting caught with other women behind her back. Then she dives into her work and eventually picks out a safe option that she hardly spends any time around. I doubt her original dreams completely faded away. Then Morgan pops up again, very much an adult now. Seemingly wise beyond his years. In your program. Single(ish). Wat do?>>3609954And there has been no vote committing anything to her either. It's just talk. Talk that matches up with a lot of the discussion in the threads. It's cool if you don't approve. Just vote in the other direction when it comes to that.
>>3609987>Just vote in the other direction when it comes to that.pretty unanimously we have been whenever it comes up, like the convos with our sisters.
>>3610033I've seen a lot of, "I don't want to talk about this." I can't recall seeing any, "I'm not interested in her." Unless I'm missing something major, we've been dancing around the issue for most of the quest... which I think makes a lot of sense for a very private person with trust issues. He obviously has at least some feelings for her. I'm assuming that it'll end up coming to a vote on whether or not he will act on those feelings. Just to be clear, I haven't totally made up my mind on which way I will vote either. I think both options are viable and in character.
>>3610126>I've seen a lot of, "I don't want to talk about this." I can't recall seeing any, "I'm not interested in her."Then you need to reread previous threads, because the votes where we say we don't want to talk are because we keep getting pestered about it after saying we're not interested.
>>3609454>[x] Kind of. Found a different recipe book.>>3609458>I legit feel bad about how slow it's going Please don't, we all have other stuff to do, like you. Quality over quantity.
>>3610127Not that Anon but did a quick skim through the quest and I haven't found a vote regarding Morgan being interested or not interested in Merlin. I may have missed it since I'm stuck on a phone but I'm pretty confident I didn't.
>>3610281To add to what I said here, I also don't think I saw any vote that said we didn't want to talk about Morgan's feelings towards Merlin. It's been said in the text of the updates themselves but not in votes nor has it been said because a vote has implied such. It's as >>3610126 said, Morgan is a private person so it's unlikely he'll openly discuss such matters.
>>3609634Jesus Christ you whiny fuck. Let the story actually play out.
Old recipe, auntie. You shake your head, cutting out three slices and setting them on plates, putting one in front of Kyou and Merlin, and setting the last at your place. "Old recipe, auntie." You say. She looks at it again, her eyes getting a bit wistful and faraway. "It looks like the ones Santa used to make." She says, smiling sadly. Kyou tilts her head, regarding first Merlin, then the cake. "It was something special?" She asks. Merlin nods. "It was amazing." She says. "The best chocolate cake ever. But I guess the recipe was his secret, and when he died, that was it." She shrugs. "No more of it. I remember finishing the last piece from the last cake." She frowns, looking at the piece of cake in front of her as you sit. "And I love chocolate cake, but it's always been something Morgan doesn't make much." She says. You shrug. "Holdin myself to de standard set by Santa, oui." You respond. Merlin shakes her head. "You shouldn't do that all the time." She says. "You always hold yourself to an impossible standard." You grin. "Impossible? Non. Improbable maybe, oui. Try de cake, auntie." She sighs again, but nods, cutting a small bite off and putting it in her mouth- you can see the surprise shoot across her features, and she finishes it before setting down her fork. "Morgan, how?" She asks. Santa left me his notes. How close am I? I had his old recipe, but I'm not sure.

[x] How close am I? I had his old recipe, but I'm not sure. "How close am I?" You ask, as Kyou tries a bite of the cake. "I had his old recipe, but I'm not sure." Merlin sighs, slicing off another bite of cake. "It's the exact same." She says. "I haven't had this cake in almost twenty years." Kyou nods in agreement. "This is excellent cake." She says, smiling. She's taking small bites, savoring the dessert slowly. "I cannot imagine what it must have been like to have this originally." Merlin smiles at the memory. "It was like this." She says. "at least a little. Frank and I used to get cake delivered at the end of a big project or a successful major milestone, and sometimes Ice or Slider would come visit with us." "Ah, speaking of milestones." Kyou says. "Have we been cleared for flights tomorrow?" Merlin shakes her head. "I don't know yet." She says. "Probably, the MHU attached to the program will often tell me if there's any concerns, but they won't sign off before they've had a chance to talk to you the morning before." "But we will be flying?" Kyou presses. Merlin nods. "Most likely. You'll be here till the Enterprise finishes refuel and complex overhaul and takes aboard her training rotation for her cruise. That's about two weeks from now, though you'll be rendezvousing with them off North Carolina or Florida." "And we'll be there a week?" Kyou asks. Merlin nods. "Once they sign off on your carrier qualification, You'll be back here for a couple of days, and then you'll be starting your deck tour." She says. "Till then you'll be doing basic test flights over fort Irwin and out over Nevada and Alaska." "Alaska?" Kyou asks, and Merlin nods. "The Alaskan test range is one of our major ones, because it's as large as it is. We prefer the NTTR and fort Irwin for the most part though because of how close they are, but you can expect to head up to Alaska at least once or twice." Kyou nods. "I look forward to it." Merlin yawns and stretches as she finishes her cake. "Morgan, that was-" She shakes her head again. "Thank you." of course, auntie. So I guess I got it right?

"I-I never thought I'd get to taste it again. Thank you Morgan." You nod. "Are you retiring, then?" Kyou asks Merlin, and the older witch nods. "It's been a long day for me, and I have just as much work tomorrow to do, too." She says. "With Sorensen and my team here, we're going to be pretty busy tomorrow with your flight."Kyou nods. "If you wish, you are welcome to use my room. I can sleep on the couch this time." She says, looking at you with a look that very clearly says 'I do not intend to spend the night on the couch'.Merlin looks a little torn- her things are already in your room, afterall. Eventually, though, she nods. "Thank you Kyou." She says, smiling. "do you need to get anything?" Kyou shakes her head. "All the things I will require are already out of the room" She says, and Merlin nods. You handle the dirty dishes as she heads into the bathroom to brush her teeth- and Kyou does end up pulling a few things out of her room- a well-worn kindle and a blanket, and she's changed into her evening clothes- that oversized shirt of hers. The two of you sit quietly in the living room with the TV low as Merlin heads into Kyou's room and shuts the door, and neither of you speaks for a bit- leaving your aunt time to sleep. Eventually, though, you hear Kyou pull in a breath to talk. "I wasn't sure, earlier, if I wished to bring this up, but I'm sure by now you have heard rumors of my origins?" She says. "And I know that I can trust you with them, should I reveal them to you?" I've heard a few things, oui, but I'm not too worried. I've heard a few things, and I'll admit I'm curious.

[x] I've heard a few things, oui, but I'm not too worried. But I am curious. "I've heard a few things, oui," You start, watching her out of the corner of her eye for any kind of physical response- there isn't one, at least not one you can see. "But I'm not too worried. I am curious, though." Kyou nods. "As I had suspected you may be." She says. "You are aware, of course, what I plan to tell you remains between us. It suits my grandfather- the emperor- for there to be a degree of uncertainty about me." You nod- you understand, and are no stranger to the kind of politics she's describing. While they were far more limited in your case- extending no farther than inter-coven wrangling- they're almost the same. "I am not the same as the Soviet weapons." She states, flatly. "My mother is, indeed, my mother, as is my father. I was not created wholecloth as they were." She pauses. "I was, however, modified after I had been conceived using some of the technology and techniques the Soviets had developed. It was on a much more limited scale, but it was successful."You nod. "I see." She smirks. "Internally, it puts me in a position much like yours. Most families desire me for both my latent magical strength and for my political connections. It must be driving them mad to know we are both now taken- and with each other." That earns a laugh. She's not wrong- it's part of why you don't trust that easily. Maman made sure you were well equipped to handle life in the best way for you- and sometimes that meant knowing the super hot witch that was totally into you wasn't in it for anything other than your name. You still ran into trouble- the ex, forever after known as 'the ex' being an example- but you learned quickly to separate real friends like BB from people who just wanted to run close to Frank Bishop's son. She smiles. "It does make me wish my mother would share more of her dealings about my sister with me. I can only imagine the discussions she must be having regarding her future. There are more than a few families with old noble ties that expect to be able to introduce their sons to the daughter of the heir to the throne. Is it the same with your family?" Not as much as you'd think- none of my sisters are that well behaved. Kind of, but nowhere near that overt or consistent.

Ok guys, votes called! It's probably going to be a short-ish run tonight, just to get us to the stop point I'd hoped to get to this week. We weren't far off and it's all my own speed issues that caused it, so haha!
[x] Not as much as you'd think- none of my sisters are that well behaved. You smile and shake your head. "Not as much as you'd think." You say. "None of my sisters are that well behaved." To be sure there were low-key feelers from highly placed witches and matrons about their sons or grandsons- even traditional covens, who tend to ignore anyone not a witch or highly placed politician or military officer will look to the possibility of 'political' marriages. Your sisters, especially Anastasia and Christina, have always been what would be considered 'desirable' in coven politics, especially with their claim to the Romanov tradition- but in general, the Bishop family name, and Frank's reputation- not to mention their own behavior- has kept it limited. Kyou smiles, scooting a hair closer. "I do recall there was some low-key discussion about using the princess consort as a line of communication on behalf of some families in excellent standing. It was decided, after the unpleasantness regarding Samantha that it was better to not and it was dropped." She shoots a glance back over her shoulder at the closed door to her room and sighs. "I am afraid, now, that the actions of the coven and Mitsubishi's board of directors cost us a great deal in regards to her." You shrug. "You're not wrong." You admit- you're comfortable with some of the story, but a lot of it you class as being firmly 'not your business'. She sighs again. "I suppose, then, that I am fortunate that she values you so highly." She says, then shakes her head. "But I suspect this topic will lead us to uncomfortable places." There's a pause, and you both turn to the TV. "I am looking forward to flying, tomorrow" Kyou says, after a few minutes. "Are you as well?" Sitting still has been hard, yeah. I'm more worried about carnival. This many witches around means we're going to have a lot of company up there.

[x] Sitting still has been hard, yeah. You nod. "Sitting still has been hard these last few days, yeah." Kyou smiles, nodding. "I am amazed Merlin's team was able to complete the modifications to our fighter so quickly." She says, then shakes her head. "Tales of American industrial workers drive aren't uncommon, of course- their repair work on the Kaga after Midway is still a thing of legend among the fleet. But I had done as I suspect many others have and discounted them as hyperbole. It is surreal to encounter them firsthand." "Well, we did kind of get the prince treatment." You say with a smile. "Auntie M has always dropped anything if I asked her for something." "I see." Kyou responds. "I understand the nature of your relationship is private, and will not press the matter." She says with a faint smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. "It would be unfair of me to do so, yes? " She laughs. You watch TV for a short while longer- you're edging into the tail end of primetime and on into late night when Kyou yawns. "If you do not mind, I think it is getting time for sleep." She says, standing up and stretching. "As I offered use of my bed to Samantha, I feel I would be out of line demanding use of yours, however it will be rather difficult for me to sleep if you remain up and watching television." You nod, standing up- you've gotten pretty tired too, despite your nap. "Were it not for the need for some decorum and proper behavior," Kyou says, "I would suggest that perhaps I would join you instead of remaining here. However, a princess cannot behave in such a manner, so quickly." She says with a smirk. "And it is a challenge. The instructors made clear that the link makes controlling oneself difficult. I intent to prove to them it can be done." She pauses. "That is, with your assistance." You laugh. (jokingly) as you command, highness. If you worried about people talking I can see to it they don't.

[x] (jokingly) as you command, highness. You Bow. "As you command, highness." You say, and she laughs. "I am pleased to hear I have my subject's approval." She says. "But for now the discussion will stay till morning." You nod, and head into your room, closing the door as Kyou shuts off the lights in the living room. You're vaguely aware of the conflicting emotions- MIU linkages can do that, since they can impart the equivalent of a lifetime of knowing someone in a few minutes- and, of course, the longer you fly, the more deep it becomes. It's why there's as much controversy around the program as there is, with certain people claiming it's little more than government-sanctioned mind control. It's not, of course, but you're well aware it's designed to create a kind of gestalt consciousness in the air that, more often than not, also creates an incredibly close relationship between pilot and witch- and you're both already feeling the first effects of that. So far you've been able to keep it under control pretty well- at least, you think you have- but that doesn't mean Kyou's not feeling it worse than you. You push the thoughts aside as you climb into the rack, shutting off the light and rolling over. Sleep comes more easily than it might, knowing you're back to flight tomorrow- but your dreams are a jumbled mess of scenes and you wake up at least once with a monster cramp in your legs- one that you still faintly feel when your alarm wakes you at 04.
And that's it for the week! sorry about the slowdown there, got called away to do some work. This is the danger of living with the folks after acquiring a trade skill, haha! Wasn't bad, actually kinda enjoyed burning steel again. They've suggested chasing a bachelor degree in something, but we'll see- I'll keep you guys up to speed either way. Anyway, gents, as that's all, and I have no other news for you, I'll just say till next week and Cheers!
>>3614581Thanks for the run Ghost!

So, news!Had a line on a job here locally, but that fell through. Shame, I was looking forward to it, but eh. There's the Fullsail thing, too, but I'm really, honestly not comfortable taking on a shitload of student loan debt. Course, I could and then just bank on there being a civil war sooner or later, right? Haha. Probably not. Anyway, So, we may not have a run tomorrow- in a fit of cosmic irony, the 4th and I don't always get along. I'm alright most days, but that and new years, for some reason. We'll run a make-up, of course. I think that's about it! ===============================================================================================================================Your alarm went off for you to find you weren't even the first awake- Kyou and Merlin both had gotten up just before you, and were dressed in PT gear, waiting for you to throw on shoes and shorts and join them on the morning run. Four miles didn't seem to even phase Kyou, though Merlin, at least, looked a little red in the face and more than a little out of breath at the end, there. Frankly, you're more surprised she joined you, and was able to keep up the entire run- Kyou didn't set an easy pace, though you suspect it was easier than she was used to just for Merlin's presence there. For you, it wasn't much either- typically you shoot for six miles in thirty minutes. Four miles an hour is practically a walk in the park. From there, you all ate light breakfasts- though 'light' in the case of Kyou still involved about a pound of bacon. She's taking very well to western food, you note. You opted for a couple of eggs and a slice of melon, with Merlin eating about the same, while side-eyeing the cake under it's plastic dome on the counter. The flight line is already busy by the time you get there- marine hornets and navy tomcats already rolling for early morning flights, while, on your part of the pad, the Marine Wyvern has attracted a small crowd of marine brass. They seem none too interested in you or Kyou as you arrive in your gear, though Merlin goes to talk to them, leaving you to do your walkaround inspection without her. You're loaded for self-defense- an old wartime restriction of flight that's never changed. For you, that means a pair of sidewinders in the nacelles and a pair of AMRAAMs in the centerline bay. It also means the 40mm guns are loaded. The Chief rides up on the cart with another of the ground crew as you complete the walkaround, with Kyou greeting her just before heading up the ladder. "Morning, sir." The chief says, saluting- you note that her cup of coffee isn't present. You return the salute and nod. 1/2
"Morning, Chief." You respond. She looks up at the fighter. "Well, they got it all done and signed off for flight. Kinda amazing how fast they were able to do it, but I guess that's why bosslady keeps witches on a fabrication team." She says. "I guess they signed off on you and the Princess?" You nod- you'd seen the shrinks in ops before even getting a flight plan briefed. "Alright." she says. "Well, all they said today was a check ride on the structural work they did. One of the Boss' witches charged up the VLS, that's still got more or less a full charge. Boss said she was going to work on it some more, but it'll charge in flight anyway." She pauses as a pair of Tomcats start up their engines- they're far enough away that it's not deafening, but near enough that it's noticeable. "They said you'd pick your range in flight. Top gun is using the shit out of the NTTR right now, are you headed that way or are you going to Irwin?" I think the marine drake is headed into the NTTR for a date ride, so we're going to Irwin. We're going to the NTTR anyway, there's plenty of space and we're just checking structural anyway.
>>3624819>[X] I think the marine drake is headed into the NTTR for a date ride, so we're going to Irwin. >>36248124 is some bad news, just ask this guy.

I just completed a re-read of the original quest & noticed that horruu-neetohs pastebin is gone, does anyone have pics, copies or something, also I noticed some mentioning Slider lewds made by him, can anyone confirm?
>>3625019Huh, it is gone.
[x] I think the marine drake is headed into the NTTR for a date ride, so we're going to Irwin. "I think the marine drake is headed into the NTTR for a date ride," You say, looking back over your shoulder at the camoflague painted aircraft, "So we're going to Irwin." The chief looks past you to the other wyvern, and nods. "Yeah, I can see that. They sure do get interested whenever they're spinning up a new crew." She says. "I guess that's what happens though, when they've only got four. Rumor says they got approved two more, and that they're talking about another two after that." You nod- you've heard the same rumor, mainly from talking heads on the news channels. "It might get busy around here." She says. "There's a crew due to retire pretty soon, too. They've got kids, I guess, and they're figuring now's the time to get out." She looks up at the fighter. "That's good news for us. We'll get some of their guys when the crew is decommissioned. Must be busy days at the vought plant."You nod again, and she looks back over her shoulder at the arriving ground crew members- just a few of them, to help with the startup tasks, like pulling the ground power umbilical and wheel chocks. "Be good up there, sir." She says as you turn to head up the ladder. You climb up and drop into the cockpit, noting that Kyou's waiting with her helmet off in the back. She nods to you as your eyes briefly meet as you get to the top of the ladder and drop into the ejection seat, pulling your flight bag over the side with you. In the mirror set to either side of the console, you can see her pull her helmet on and lean forward against her straps to flip her uplink switch. You flip your helmet over into your hands and seat it on your head, reaching over to grab the umbilical line and plug it in before tugging it on and hitting the MIU link. It's nowhere near as chaotic as yesterday- indeed, it's much closer to how you usually think about it, but for the presence of Muinn- although, this time, instead of a crow, she's decided to present as what you think of as a stereotypical 'goth' girl- black lipstick on a pasty, almost corpse-colored face, dark clothing, and too-pale skin where it shows. "Ah, glad to see you finally made time to join us." She says. "Kyou and I already done on prestart and ground checklists, we were just waiting for you to plug in." "We're on external power and oxygen." Kyou says. "Ammunition bins for the forties are full, and we've got two sidewinders and two AMRAAMS, both loaded conventional." Her voice comes over the helmet speakers, now, indicating she's using the intercom. That's not too surprising- one of the things the MIU struggles with that the VDNI didn't is communications- most MIU aircrews prefer the intercoms. "VLS and FAST packs are empty." 1/2
You nod. "She can't see that, ya know." Muninn points out. "Crew's clear, starting up." Kyou calls, and you feel the turbines behind you start to spin up, both cracking into the green as they reach power. "Chief, pull ground power and oxygen." Kyou orders, and you note the power dip for a second before the internal systems compensate. "We're on internal, ready to roll." Kyou calls. "Chief, pull the chocks." You order- only the rear wheels are chocked, of course, and the ground crew pulls them, the chief gives you a thumbs-up when, then a salute as you start to roll, following the marshal off the pad and onto the apron. You have to wait on the pad as a pair of hornets takes off, but you're in the air behind them quickly, executing a traditional climb out and crossing out over the pacific beach at La Jolla. "Southern airspace at Irwin is closed." Muninn announces. "And the airspace over the B-1 crash site is also restricted, recovery efforts are going on. We're cleared into the north." "We should also think about attracting attention." Kyou adds. "I am told it is a tradition for older crews to test the incoming crews, and that it is unusual you escaped such behavior thus far. I think with the additional activity in the area because of carnival, if we wish to not be pulled into impromptu dogfight practice, we should consider setting our transponder to training." "Or leave it on." Muninn offers. "I 'd like more combat data, the stuff they make publicly available is pretty limited and I've already reviewed every single live and practice air combat involving a wyvern." Kyou's right- we're just here to do a structural check, not to get sucked into a dogfight Muninn's right- more combat data now could be a benefit later.
>>3625080>[x] Kyou's right- we're just here to do a structural check, not to get sucked into a dogfightIf we weren't running a structural check I'd be all for a little fun with some senpais but not when we're running a check like this.

[x] Kyou's right- we're just here to do a structural check, not to get sucked into a dogfight"Kyou's right." You say. "Set the transponder to training." "Alright." Muninn responds, though she visibly pouts a bit as she does so. "I guess I can always read more dragonriders of Texas on the ground." She sets the transponder over, broadcasting your location, but also informing ground control- and other aircraft- that you're in a test or training cycle, and not to be approached. It's not foolproof, of course- nothing is, especially nothing within the wyvern community- but it's an excellent cover. Once your arrive over the airspace, Muninn makes itself busy locating and tracking the army units on the ground- the vast majority of them are done, you know, with the armored unit you'd flown over during Kyou's check ride leaving the post currently, headed home to Texas. Still, there's small elements still utilizing the land, and, of course, the ongoing salvage operation near the crashed B-1W. There's not a lot of it left, you know- no major components really survived, and most of what can be recovered has been. Still, that small grid of airspace remains restricted- you can fly over it at twenty thousand plus feet, but not below that, owing to ongoing helicopter flights in the air. "Workup procedure is to max both positive and negative G loading, and to achieve and maintain maximum airspeed for at least twenty seconds." Kyou says, reading off her checklist. "We should also perform basic air combat maneuvering." "I can also start working to integrate the VLS launch profile into our weapons computers." Muninn offers. "It won't take much effort and I won't be able to finish it without live tests, but it's something to do and monitoring our skeletons isn't going to take a whole lot of effort." "Or you could monitor nearby flight traffic." Kyou says. "I do not trust our counterparts, or witches, to pay attention to the transponder setting." Kyou's right again, but just keep an eye on it. You can do the VLS workup as well. Go for the VLS- if they want to play, we'll just nosell it. Kyou's absolutely right. Tie in with the local net and keep an eye out.
>>3625295>[x] Go for the VLS- if they want to play, we'll just nosell it.

>>3625295> Go for the VLS- if they want to play, we'll just nosell it.I honestly would be shocked if soem moron got it in their head to mess with people doing training and new equipment workup. That's just asking for something to go wrong.
[x] Go for the VLS- if they want to play, we'll just nosell it. "Start the VLS work." You order. "If anyone shows up to play, we'll just no sell it." "You got it." Muninn says- you get the impression she'd already started on it, but now she's spending more time on it. "Alright, first line item is maximum rate sustained turns." Kyou says. "We want maximum G loading at least three times, preferably in different attitudes." You respond by pushing into the afterburner range before rolling the fighter into a brutal break turn, snapping it around to a new heading. You hold the turn for a full second before leveling out. "Everything is still normal." Kyou calls forward. "No structural issues. Two more of those, please." You comply, shoving the aircraft into a snap turn to north, rolling level a second or two later, and then a third. "Muninn reports no warnings or faults." Kyou says, and, distractedly, Muninn nods, looking a little distracted. "Next is airspeed, accelerate to maximum safe indicated airspeed and maintain it for at least thirty seconds, then decelerate rapidly down to stall speed." The wyvern flows through the fairly punishing maneuvering without a hitch- you barely notice the wing transition as you trim into high-speed flight automatically, and even when you chop the throttles to idle and deploy the airbrakes, the jet hardly complains- though you can hear Kyou grunt as she slams forward into her straps. "We have company." Muninn calls. "Four contacts, two witches, two..." She pauses and frowns. "Aircraft? One's a trainer, the other, I'm not sure about." "No radio contact." Kyou calls. "And they're not radiating. But they're headed in this direction. And they're not trying to sneak up on us. Or if they are, they're doing a terrible job. Do you wish me to hail them?" We'll just unass the airspace. I don't trust witches to not want to play. Yeah, see who they are and what they're doing. We're done if they want the airspace.
Calling it here for the night- sorry about the slowdown, some of my neighbors started setting off some early fireworks and rattled me a bit, haha. bear in mind, we won't be running the 4th, so I'll see you guys friday! Not sure if it's my shit memory, but was it ever explained what would happen if someone died while linked up?I would imagine that the survivor would not go unscathed psychologically.
>>3629156I'm fairly sure that there are safety interlocks designed to forcefully sever the link the moment the vital readings from either the pilot or WSO indicates imminent death. There would probably be SOME neural and mental damage, but a lot less than being in someone's mind the moment the lights go out. As for what would happen what would happen if someone dies BEFORE those safeties activate (i.e. something that destroys the brain, like a bullet to the head or shrapnel), I don't think anyone knows, as that would probably happen in a dogfight and the resulting airframe damage and shock to the other crew member would probably prevent them from ejecting.
>>3629306I swear this is the horrifying shit that keeps me up at night. God hopes that it's severed cleanly because between possibly witnessing your own death from another's POV, or seeing your partner's death while also experiencing death in both scenarios; I just don't know which is worse.
>>3629306I suppose the AI is there to prevent the situations like this.
Ok, votes called! Hopefully there's no more storms that blow through, there was one about an hour ago that got a little close for comfort, haha! I'll let you guys know if one's coming in though.
>>3629493Hell, just hope that it actually severs in the first place. Brain damage is bad, remembering some of your partner's memories would require counselling and psychiatric help, but both would 100% be preferable to being inside someone's mind the moment they kick the bucket. Though I suppose the upshot of that is that you might have the chance to see if there is another side, but that could very well have some soul-crushing results if there really is nothing on the other side.>>3629497Hey here's hoping that the AI has that function, because if not then it would be entirely wasteful. It should be able to fly the plane while the surviving crew member is KO, or at the very least eject them before the plane hits the ground. No need to loose BOTH crew members and the plane if there is an option to input one line of code to save one of them.
[x] Yeah, see who they are and what they're doing. We're done if they want the airspace. "See who they are and what they're doing." You say, pulling the jet around in a wide northerly turn, putting you more or less on a direct course to the China lake airfield. You'll have to stay clear of it- the airspace there is restricted, other than for in-flight emergencies. "We're done, if they want the airspace." "Understood." Kyou responds, before opening up a radio broadcast, using your "Eagle one-one" callsign. Part of you is anxious to be rid of it- though you're going to be rid of it- it's the mark of a replacement squadron wyvern, but more than that, part of you feels wrong using it- Eagle is your dad's callsign. Or was, anyway- you're not sure what he uses these days when he flies, to be honest. "VLS workup is done." Muninn says, intruding into your thoughts. She's got a bored expression on her face, and is examining her black-painted fingernails as she talks. "We'll want live weapons data before we try to use it, though." "They're Valkyrie flight." Kyou says, a second later- normally you'd have heard the whole conversation, but Muninn had muted it to say her piece. It's one of those MIU behaviors that takes getting used to- the AI can detect where your focus is and limit data in response, taking the duty of watching everywhere at once onto itself. Of course, it's well-equipped to handle the job, too- unlike you, it's always had access to every sensor in the fighter and it's brain is housed in eight separate twelve core magically-assisted computers. "And they just want us. Take heading Three-Two-Eight and climb to angels twenty to join on them. We'll be providing distant chase and sensor data for a test." "They have orders? China lake takes us outside our area." You ask. "From Admiral Wells." Kyou responds. "I already confirmed them." She sounds a tiny bit insulted- and reflecting on it, you know it was kind of silly to ask. She wouldn't have relayed the information without confirming first. 1/2
"Understood. Three-two-eight at angels twenty." You respond, pulling your fighter into a shallow bank and climbing to the briefed height. It's not long before you see them, flying in a loose formation- two witches in a standard combat spaced formation, the lead forward and low, her wingmate high and behind, off to her right. But it's not the witches you're interested in. One of the two aircraft one of the NASA chase planes, which are the same aircraft used for MIU training, without the MIU gear installed. It's presence is only slightly odd- they're based at NASA's Dryden facility at Edwards, and you know they've worked with Merlin before, but to have one along here seems out of place. The other aircraft is smaller even than the NASA airfcraft- and is extremely odd. There's no canopy visible- though you can clearly make out four gunports on the nose, all clustered together. It's wings are almost too short- and feature a compound sweep, similar to your own wyvern's- though these have no foward swept section. A pair of small engines at the back look similar to the ones in training aircraft- but the faint violet shimmer near the exhausts gives away their magical nature. "What is that?" Kyou wonders aloud as you sweep in and join the formation from above, forming up below and to the left of the witches- presenting you with a view of the strange little aircraft's underbelly. It's painted in the current navy scheme- Light blue on top with a white underside. It's got a pair of V-shaped supersonic intakes, and you can see the closed doors of internal weapons bays. "Good to see you again, El-tee." Danielle calls. "Like the new ride?" "So that's valkyrie?" "Nice to see you too again, commander. What are we doing?"

"Nice to see you too again, commander. What are we doing?""Nice to see you too again, commander." You respond, tossing a glance back over your shoulder at the witches- you don't recognize either of them, though their lack of rifles and the blue paint on their strikers marks them as vought, most likely. "What are we doing?" "I'm putting this thing though it's paces." Danielle responds. "You're going to stand off a couple miles and let your sensor pack record it. I'll be sending you telemetry and flight data live as well, you should see the datalink now." "I've got it." Muninn says, then frowns. "Oh, ok. Someone's trying to flirt. Not my type." She says, dismissively. "Seems small to have a full AI in there, though. Must be cramped.""Seperate now." Danielle calls, and you split away from the small fighter, positioning yourself a little over two miles north as she begins her workup- it looks to be mostly aerodynamics. "That is amazing!" Kyou says, watching Danielle execute a pair of almost instant ninety degree turns- as you suspected, the machine is far more flexible than a fighter, and seems able to bend in places. Knowing your aunt, it's also got a couple more tricks up it's sleeve- she's too big a mech nerd to not at least take a little inspiration from her shows. You watch for a few minutes more- you're not watching the actual datastream, instead preferring to follow the little craft as it wheels and pivots around, no doubt testing it's structural limits and performance boundaries. Kyou sniffs from the back seat. "It is impressive." She says, her initial excitement clearly having died off. "But we are more powerful by far. She is struggling to match us in speed and her instantaneous turn rate is only marginally better than ours. Her weapons are significantly weaker, as well, and her electronic warfare suite is much more limited." How does it compare to strikers, though? Too early to make a call on it though, right?
>>3629973>[x] How does it compare to strikers, though?

>>3629973>[X] How does it compare to strikers, though?
>>3629973>[x] Too early to make a call on it though, right?Danielle's natural talent for EW should level off the suite's limitations, and given how that's a jumped-up striker I'm gonna guess she has hammer space bays for air-to-air missiles similar to ours. So the only real deficiency may be the guns, but she can probably point them at us like a regular witch and her rifle.
>>3629973>How does it compare to strikers, though?
[x] How does it compare to strikers, though?"How does it compare to strikers, though?" You ask. "Against almost any strikers, I would think she would have an overwhelming edge." Kyou responds. "Against fighters, I am certain she would similarly posses an insurmountable advantage. Against us, I do not think she could survive long." She says. "I am anxious to test her ability against us, however." You nod to yourself, having expected as much from the aggressive witch behind you- you know she's having to struggle to not demand you bounce the commander now and get in a dogfight, previous statements about the subject be damned. You can kind of feel the same aggressiveness in the back of your head, though, you suspect, nowhere near as strong as she does. "Ok, I'm going to try the mode shift." Danielle calls. "Here we go." You can't see it very clearly from here- the angle is poor and the distance is too great- but the fighter breaks into a climb and begins to transition- the armored plates around the witch inside pull apart, leaving her in a position much closer to a traditional striker set. Of course, you think. It's a variable fighter- someone's going to call Merlin on it, you're sure. That said, watching the fighter move now is far more like a striker- enough so that you wonder why Merlin didn't just make this a standard flight mode. "It is a shame we cannot engage her in a dogfight." Kyou says, eventually. "I believe she would be a challenging opponent. Perhaps we will ask her later.""Phew!" Danielle calls, executing a brutal roll and shifting back into fighter mode- you'd put money down Merlin calls the powered-armor mode 'battloid' or something- You make a mental note to ask. "Ok guys, that's it. Eagle, we're RTB, thanks for the assist. Admiral Wells will meet you on the ground." Kyou responds while you break off- you've still got fuel, but you took off without full tanks- you'll still be landing with plenty of gas, of course, but it's time to turn for home plate anyway. The air is busy as you close in to Miramar- surprisingly so. "Look at the wyverns!" Kyou calls- you roll to one side and Muninn plugs in the enhanced optical camera for you- you can see there's at least four of the jets on the ground now, all parked in a row. They're all navy- the decidedly nonuniform paint on each of them marks them as such- one is a deep crimson red with gold trim, another an almost pure white. Compared to the Echocats and JSFs and marine hornets, they stand out. "Is all that for this Carnival?" Kyou wonders aloud. "Ah, it would be excellent to test ourselves against them!" Let's see what Merlin's got planned for us. We're close to our tour. We'll have to see.

ok, votes closed!
[x] Let's see what Merlin's got planned for us. We're close to our tour. "Let's see what Merlin's got planned for us." You say, watching the base recede behind you as you enter the usual landing pattern- you'll make one wide turn out over the sea, then land on 6L, the longer of the two runways. "We're close to our tour." "I know, but still, it would be excellent to engage worthy opponents." Kyou responds. "It seems as if it has been a lifetime since we were able to do so."You don't answer, instead guiding the fighter in for an easy landing on the runway- Muninn yawns in boredom as the wheels kiss pavement. Wyvern parking seems crowded, but there's a definite air of relaxation as you shut down the engines and Muninn's avatar pops out of existence. There's multiple ground crews mixing down there- you can make out your chief among a knot of other higher ranked NCOs- other chiefs, you suspect. You take a minute to gather your things, hearing Kyou doing the same behind you. The chief waits on the ground for you, one hand on the ladder as you climb down. "Welcome back, sir." She says. "How'd it go?""No faults we caught." You say, looking up in time to reach up and help Kyou off the ladder- not that she needed the help, but still. "Everything looked good on our end." The chief nods. "Glad to hear it." She says, looking over her shoulder as the ground crew moves to hook up the ground umbilical. "We've got a couple last things to install, but you're doing a turnaround. Night weapons testing." "So soon?" Kyou asks. "Did something happen?" The chief shrugs. "Nothing big, just the usual. The admiral feels like it's a good idea to hustle you along though, so here we are. She already told me about the flight data, we'll pull it from here while we get weapons uploaded for release testing." You nod. "How extensive is the test?" Kyou asks. "Eh, not as much as you'd think. Vought does factory tests before the airframe is released to the navy, so the only stations we have to check are the VLS and the FAST packs. FAST will probably one each Sidewinder, Agile and AMRAAM, and the VLS is gonna be probably just about one of everything it can handle. AMRAAM, Sidewinder, SM-2, ESSM..." She shrugs. "As long as we can get them to talk to the damn computer we should be fine." She says. "But they ain't even here yet, they've got to come up from the depot." You nod. 1/2
"The admiral's got the papers for you up in ops." The chief says. "I'd head over there first, if I was you. Way they're talkin, you're not even gonna want to bother changing." She pauses, looking over at Kyou. "Well, maybe you do, ma'am. All due respect that thing doesn't look comfortable." Kyou smiles. "You find yourself getting used to it." She says, stepping a hair closer to you. The chief shrugs. "If you say so, ma'am. Well, either way. We'll get this all taken care of, you should get goin."You nod. "Thanks chief." She nods, walking back over to the knot of chiefs, who seem plenty interested in what the newest member of their club has to say. Truth be told, being a wyvern chief is as exclusive a club as being a pilot- same number of slots involved. Kyou grabs her flight bag, putting on the plastic and canvas slippers they issue for witches and turning towards you. "It seems odd that they intend to rush us. I was under the impression we were not leaving until the Nimitz had sailed." Something's going on. They wouldn't be rushing us otherwise. Probably just don't want us around during Carnival. Too many people are going to want to take a shot at me and you just for our names.
Ok, that's it for the night, guys! Neighbors apparently had some leftover fireworks from last night.. that was kind of an unwelcome surprise, haha! So I hope Merlin doesn't get her hopes too high for the 2021 end to A FUCKING REAL ESTATE COMPANY'S stranglehold on Macross rights. For some unfathomable reason the bastards who have done LITERALLY NOTHING with the rights, other than litigate frivolously and demand absurd amounts of money to sublicense, managed to negotiate an extension this week.
Kinda offtopic. This old article has popped in my feed, and it immediately reminded me of our old SWQ antics.>The pilot, Thomas Fitzpatrick, turned a barroom bet into a feat of aeronautic wonder by stealing a plane from a New Jersey airport and landing it on St. Nicholas Avenue in northern Manhattan, in front of the bar where he had been drinking.https://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/06/04/long-ago-a-pilot-landed-on-an-uptown-street-thats-where-the-bar-was/

>>3631032Speaking of SWQ I came to a horrifying realization a few minutes ago. There WAS an AI available to study that may or may not have become the basis for all modern onesHISS
>>3631095I didn’t even think of that, but you’re right. Also, as it’s an AI, wouldn’t it still be around?
>>3631293Yeah, it's probably still hanging around the basement of Castle Barin. Hissing at everyone from inside the walls.
>>3631346Can you imagine how absolutely horrifying that'd be? Academy age witches trying to fall asleep and then they hear this loud *HIIIIIISSSSSSS* and they look over and there's this cow eye staring at them from a hole in the wall. Just...staring at them. Making this hissing sound that gradually increases in volume.
>>3631366The worst thing about that would be that the matrons in charge would absolutely know about the cow, and would be unable to do jack shit about it.
[x] Something's going on. They wouldn't be rushing us otherwise. You shake your head. "Something's going on." You say, looking around for more obvious signals that there's been an incident. You can't make anything out, though- there's no crews hustling to get aircraft up, no obvious out of place work going on, no sense of worry. "They wouldn't be rushing us otherwise." "If it were urgent, we would have been informed beforehand though, yes?" Kyou asks. "And there doesn't seem to be any other activity going on to indicate such a thing." "Probably not urgent," You admit with a nod, "But something." "Could also be they are anxious to tell the people who are interested in such things that we are active." Kyou says. "Subtle pressure from matrons, perhaps?" You shrug- it's possible, but you don't think it's very likely. While not explicitly removed from the usual horse and pony nonsense that American coven politics are, you're more or less off limits by a gentleman's agreement among the matrons- not to mention that the navy is typically incredibly possessive of drake crews. That's not something you think would have affected Kyou much- as a guest to the US, she's probably outside the usual politics, but Kyou and you together, well. "I cannot imagine they would attempt to pressure the navy regarding us so quickly though." Kyou muses, stopping by the door to ops long enough for you to step forward and open it for her. She nods at you, still thinking as she steps inside. "Unless this is in response to my parents, and they expect us to spend some training time at joint base Atsugi?" With only a week before tour? I don't think so. I don't think they'd do that unless they didn't think they had time for us to do our tour before they needed us in the region.

[x] I don't think they'd do that unless they didn't think they had time for us to do our tour before they needed us in the region. You shake your head. "I don't think they'd do that unless they didn't think they had time for us to complete our tour before China made a move." You say. "The navy's determined to not have a repeat of Dad's wartime showing." Kyou smiles. "Him largely operating off of land bases the entire war?" You nod. It's a sore point for naval aviation- during the course of the war, VF-3 mostly operated out of land bases. While there's no real official doctrine changes because of it, there's certainly unofficial ones- most wyverns are expected to spend two months aboard for every month they spend on shore, typically meaning most carriers have a wyvern or two aboard for the majority of a cruise, even if the actual wyverns themselves will rotate on and off. Kyou shrugs. "Then it is difficult to say." She says. "Personally I hope they are ordering a change to our schedule. I see no reason we could not qualify aboard an IJN carrier and fly off of them for the first part of our tour." "Are IJN carrier practices the same as ours?" You ask as you turn the corner towards the elevators- Merlin's temporary office is up on the third floor, in one of the formerly empty offices there. Most of the offices here were assigned to the active squadron based out of here, before the majority of them were moved out to other bases- now they either sit empty or house instructors and aggressor pilots. "Very similar." Kyou responds. "Ours are slightly different in regards to aircraft handling, but for our purposes they're the same. The IJN claims that they can launch an air wing in half the time a US carrier can do the same, but I have my doubts." She says with a smile. "However, I am aware that launch and recovery are done practically identically." You shrug as you punch the button for the third floor and ride the elevator up. The hallway up here is fairly quiet- while most of the offices aren't empty, enough are that there's not a lot of activity here. Merlin's office sits with the door open, the Admiral herself sitting behind a desk with a trio of monitors arrayed on one side, the other a mess of open note books, pens, a box of crayons, and empty monster cans already. Kyou knocks and you both salute when Merlin looks up. "Is there anyone out in the hall?" She asks, and you look back out over your shoulder before shaking your head. "Oh." She says, then smiles. "If no one's around, don't worry about formality with me, ok? you can treat me however you want." She pauses, then turns red as she realises what she said.Kyou looks over at you, and you shrug. You wanted to see us? So what's going on with weapons? Why are we doing that tonight?
>>3632746> So what's going on with weapons? Why are we doing that tonight? Not that I mind, more flight time is more flight time.

[x] You wanted to see us? "You wanted to see us?" You ask, and Merlin nods. "Yes, come in, sit down." She says, though she doesn't stand. "I've moved your weapons release test to tonight, I'm sure the Chief told you?" You and Kyou both nod. "Good. Once you're cleared on weapons, I'm sending you to the Truman in the med." She says. "You'll complete carrier qualifications aboard, and once you do you'll assist in strikes against ISIS." You blink. "Combat?" Merlin nods. "It's a combat deployment, but there's no air threats. They don't have any witches that we know of, and the only aircraft they own are some ancient Mig-23s they captured from the Syrian air force. We don't think they're operable, but even if they are, we haven't seen them." She says. "Mostly you'd be tasked with ground strike from altitude." "So we'd be starting our deck tour with a combat rotation?" Kyou asks. Merlin hesitates, but nods again. "Yes." She says. "This isn't the first time we've done this kind of thing, two other wyverns have flown strikes as part of their deck tour, but never as their first rotation. I understand it's a bit daunting, so I'm willing to give you final say. If you don't feel comfortable with this, we'll send you to another carrier to start your deck tour." "What happened with the Nimitz?" You ask. Merlin shakes her head. "There's no reason to keep you here that long, especially not with the carnival going on and Sorensen's workup." She says. "Are you ok with taking on a combat rotation as the first leg of your deck tour? It means you may be aboard the carrier for longer than just a few weeks." I think we're ready for it, yeah. I'm not sure. I haven't had much practice on ground targets.

[x] I think we're ready for it, yeah. You look over at Kyou, then nod. "I think we're ready for it, yeah." You say. "Good." Merlin says. "I'll make sure everything is fit correctly, but I don't plan to join you aboard the carrier." "What about our ground crew?" Kyou asks. "The chief will be taking a select team with, but they won't arrive immediately. Until they do, the air support group aboard the carrier will take care of your aircraft." Merlin responds. "My team is going to do overtime tonight after you finish weapon release testing, and then you'll leave in the morning." She says. "So why us?" Kyou asks. "Surely there are other teams better suited?" Merlin nods. "There are and there aren't. There are teams that specialize in ground strike and close air support missions, and the navy is under pressure to send a wyvern to the region, but they don't want to send one of those teams currently." She explains. "So you're it, for now." "How will this affect the rest of our deck tour?" Kyou asks. Merlin pauses. "Either we'll extend it or we'll cut some carriers out of the middle. I don't think you'll spend any time aboard the Nimitz, but we won't be cutting the IJN ships." Kyou nods. "Will you be joining us at any point during the tour?" Merlin hesitates again. "I'm not sure. Maybe, but it's going to depend on what's going on here and at China Lake. I'll have combat data and Muninn's logs sent to my inbox regularly, so I'll be able to keep on top of any technical issues. She pauses, then looks up at the wall clock over the door. "If you two want to go get lunch, you should leave now. You're scheduled to fly again in six hours, but you'll want to pack and start closing up your dorm. You probably won't be back to it after this." She says. Kyou nods, and you mirror the movement. "So this is it then?" "For now." Merlin responds. "Go pack, one bag each. Anything else you can either send to storage or I can handle." She says. "That's all, you can go, unless you'd like to take me to lunch." Kyou smiles. "I think we would be delighted to." She says, clearly happy at the prospect of a combat tour- even one like this- so soon in her career. You're more excited by the prospect of actually flying sorties off a carrier deck- and getting to spend some time in the Mediterranean sun.
And that's it for the week! Sorry again about the 4th- I realize that that's a bit jarring, to have to take the day off there in the middle, but it's how it goes, sadly, in this case. There's no news that really needs to be put out right now, either, so I guess we're good till next week! >>3633350Directly? Not much concrete. MIU isn't like the VDNI, it's more subtle on what it does. For example, you knew there was something unnatural about her, but not what, specifically. Old MIU crews are kinda strange to be around- they know how each other operate on a level that makes it seem as if they're telepathic. They're not, of course, but still.

>>3633294A bit late but thanks for the run Ghost. What's the status of the PLA Navy? How many carriers do they have? Are they able to operate CSGs?
>>3633903Yes. Well, more or less. >>3634305They operate one- the Ex-soviet Varyag. Most western analysts consider the threat of it being deployed beyond the south china sea pretty remote- while on paper the PLAN can field a carrier strike or battle group, in practice they're very new to doing so, and, of course, the likleyhood of it being destroyed at sea by an IJN or USN carrier task force is pretty high. At least in the SCS, it's reasoned, they'd benefit from land based aircraft. Over all, that sums up IJN and USN analysis on the PLAN surface fleet- in a shooting war, they'll either be confined entirely to the SCS or near-shore operations, or they'll be run down and annihilated.
