The Lighthouse War is over, but conflict still continues.

With Erusea's defeat at the hands of the Osean Federation and the International United Nations, the imperial nation has splintered into a confusing mess of separatists, freedom fighters, warlords, rogue military factions, and those seeking to profit from the chaos. Worse, Erusea's many automated drone factories still remain intact, waiting for new masters to come to claim them.

The Usean continent remains in crisis, and it's up to a new generation of pilots to face this next generation threat...

You are MILLY, the "Red Tail", a Belkan Air Force pilot fighting for the IUN!

"Red, tighten up your formation. You're lagging behind a bit." Bandit says curtly over the radio. "Remember, this isn't a training run. It's a real thing."

"Yeah yeah, I got it, Bandit." You roll your eyes as you throttle up your Hornet a bit. Just slightly behind you were Vicky's Gripen and Misono's F-2.

It was sudden, but your squadron was assigned its first official IUN mission. Apparently, there was a brand spanking new Osean aircraft carrier called the Admiral Andersen a little ways south of the Lighthouse that needed to be towed back to port for repairs. Apparently she was ferrying aircraft for the Osean air force at the start of the Lighthouse War when it took damage that disabled her engines. At the time, nobody had the resources or time to try and recover her, so the ship was left to float aimlessly the whole time.

However, now that there was a relative peace, there was a concern that the Andersen would float out into open sea where she would never be found, or she and her massive treasure trove of warplanes would fall into the hands of more... unsavory parties. There was already a marked increase in piracy all along the Usean coasts, after all.

Anyways, it was pretty much just your job to provide air cover to the salvage teams as they prep the Andersen to be towed back to Gunther Bay for repairs.

"We'll be coming up on the ship in a few minutes." Bandit reminds you. "Have you decided who you want on on your wing?"

Ah, that was right. There was a brief discussion this before you had taken off. Bandit wanted you to pair up with either Vicky or Misono, since neither of them had any experience.

He pointed out that Vicky's record indicated that while she was a talented pilot, she was prone to bouts of anxiety and indecisiveness. Hopefully, as he put it, "some of your bullheaded aggression might rub off on her."

On the other hand, Bandit also observed that Misono's flying style very closely matched yours, wanting to dive into the thick of a dogfight and handle things up close. At the very least, Misono would be able to keep up with your maneuvers, even if she wasn't really going to learn anything new following you.

"I guess I can pair up with Swordfish." You decide.

"Good. Swordfish, you're Raven Three now. You'll be on Red's wing." Bandit orders.

"R-roger!" Vicky affirms as her Gripen banks a little to be just behind and to the right of your Hornet.

"Knives, you're Raven Four. You'll be my wing." Bandit continues.

"Affirmative!' Misono says with gusto as she takes position behind Bandit's Hornet.

"I'll be under your care then, Red!" Vicky's voice squeaks.

Huh, now that you think about it, this was the first time in where you were actually in charge of a nugget...

You feel a shiver run through your body as the full realization of the situation hits you. A pit in your stomach opens up at the thought of being personally responsible for another living, breathing person, relying on your for commands.

Was this what Karla felt when you were under her as her squire? Did she experience the same anxiety whenever you were around? If so, that made you respect her so much more.

"Hi! Is that Raven Squadron out there?" You hear a bright, chipper voice on the comms. "This is AWACS Bright Eye, at your service!"

"Bright Eye, can I assume we're almost at the mission area?" Bandit asks.

"Yup yup!" Bright Eye responds enthusiastically. "You should be getting into visual range right about now!"

Sure enough, on the sea below, you could see a large grey rectangle, which was undoubtedly the OFS Admiral Andersen. All around her, you could see a small flotilla of tugs, gunboats, and a single Osean frigate.

"That's... not a lot of surface protection." Vicky points out nervously.

"Perhaps that is why they needed us for air cover." Misono points out.

"The Osean Navy took a huge beating in the War. I'm surprised they could even spare a frigate." Bandit grumbles. "Bright Eye, is there anything to look out for?"

"Nothing on my scopes so far, but there's lots of civilian traffic nearby, so it'll be hard to pick out any baddies!"

"Roger that. We'll keep an eye out, then." Bandit responds. "Red, you want to go high or low?"

"We'll go high!" You say decisively as you pull back at your stick, making your Hornet nose up towards the sky. "Keep up, Swordfish!"

"R-roger!" Vicky responds. To her credit, she's quick to follow you, her Gripen maintaining formation with you.

Meanwhile, Bandit and Misono drop altitude and maintain and orbit around the Andersen, keeping a protective watch over the disabled carrier.

You check your radar now that you were higher up. You didn't see anything in the immediate area. Not much civilian traffic, either. The mass destruction of the world's satellites during the war not only messed up global communications, but GPS as well. As a result, a lot of civilian traffic, both air and sea, was restricted due to safety reasons.

So, overall, there wasn't really much to see up here. However, you did notice a rather ominous stormfront rolling in from the south, which was messing with your radar detection. Your gut feeling was telling you that if there was going to be any aerial ambush, it would be coming out of those clouds.

"Swordfish, we're gonna go check out that storm. Maybe our radar can get a better read if we're closer." You tell her.

"I-Isn't that dangerous?" Vicky gulps. "We were told to avoid storms whenever we could!"

"Which is exactly why baddies like hiding in them!" You counter as you gently bank your Hornet towards the storm clouds. "Don't worry! If something happens just call out and I'll be there to back you up!"

"O-Okay!" Vicky responds a bit more confidently, reassured by your words.

As you near the roiling clouds, you keep a close eye on your radar screen as well as the clouds themselves.

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!" You hear Vicky screaming in panic as her cannon opens up at the same time as yours.

The Mig-29s, apparently also caught off guard, unleash their own bursts of cannon fire but they're just a tad too slow. Your cannon shells get sucked right into the opposing Mig-29s engines, causing a massive explosion as the craft goes down in flames. You glance to the right and see the other MiG-29's cockpit canopy shatter as Vicky's cannon burst hits the pilot dead on. The pilotless MiG-29 drops like a rock, the airframe still intact.

"D-did I do that?!" Vicky gasps, finally stopping her screaming.

"You're damn right you did!" You laugh. "I didn't know you were such a crack shot!"

"Swordfish." You say quickly. You couldn't afford to have her thinking herself into knots in the middle of the mission. "Check your instruments. You got a couple holes in your plane."

"O-oh!" Vicky pauses. "No visible damage! You got a few holes, too!"

Did you? Damn, guess that MiG-29 was a better shot than you thought. You glance at your own instrument panel, but thankfully, it didn't seem like anything important was damaged.

>9 hp remains.

"Bandit, did you catch that?" You announce over the radio. "We got bogeys in the storm clouds! A pair just tried to bounce us!"

"We saw, but we've got other problems." Bandit grunts. "We've got surface contacts closing in on the carrier, and they don't look friendly."

Vicky is able to stay on your tail. However, the turbulence and lowered visibility makes it damn near impossible to tell if there's anything lurking in these clouds. Your Hornet shakes and rattles from the turbulent air and harsh winds, while water droplets start peppering your canopy, further reducing vision.

You couldn't ask for a more perfect shot. You hold down your trigger and let loose with your cannon. At the same time, Vicky follows your lead and unleashes her cannon as well. The hail of bullets tears into both Mig-29s, punching deep holes into their fuselages and sending them tumbling out of sight.

Splash two more Migs!

However, the four drone wingmen don't take too kindly to their fleshy partners being shot down, and immediately begin maneuvering. Unfortunately, it seems they detect Vicky first and start making a beeline straight for her.

"Swordfish!! Move your tiny ass and lead them outta the storm!" You bark. "Go!"

"Aaaaaaaaahhhhh!" Vicky wails as she hits her afterburner. Her Gripen's single engine blazes like a giant candle in the night as she blasts out of the storm clouds, the MQ-99s still intent on following her.

You follow the pack out of the storm as well, only to be met by a real mess of a sight.

Numerous small speedboats were harassing the frigate and salvage tugs, trading small arms fire with the IUN personnel on the ships. Bandit and Misono were doing their best to help, swooping down and performing strafing runs on the pirate boats. You even manage to catch Bandit basically capsizing a couple of boats with a well timed, low altitude supersonic flyby.

"Red, heeeeeelp!' Vicky wails, the MQ-99s still stuck on her tail like glue.

You figure you and Vicky can handle these drones just fine. She just needed some of the pressure taken off of her so she had room to breathe. She was doing a good job of staying ahead of the four drones, but she couldn't keep evading them forever.

However, as a result of her hitting afterburner, she'd gotten quite a distance away from you, just out of your gun range.

"Don't worry, Swordfish, I got your back!" You tell Vicky as you lock on to the drones with your radar. A couple missiles should knock most of them down, or at the very least scatter them so they woudln't be focusing fire in Vicky.

You pop off a pair of missiles, which streak after the drones pursuing Vicky. Thankfully, it looks like the drones were too focused on Vicky to realize that they've been targeted, and two drones explode into pieces as the missiles impact.

The other drone then pause for a second as if trying to process what had happened and trying to decide whether you or Vicky were the larger threat.

Vicky meanwhile is not idle in all of this either. Seeing her opening, she pulls an incredibly tight turn that only a light fighter like the Gripen was capable of, her plane briefly turning into a gray blur as she lines up on the last two drones. A pair of missiles then lance out, spearing the last two drones.

"Good job everybody! It looks like all the hostile force have been routed!" Bright Eye announces cheerfully. "And the Andersen is already being towed back to shore! She should reach the drydock before sundown!"

<<MISSION ACCOMPLISHED>>

As you level your Hornet, you could indeed see that the massive carrier was being pulled by the small fleet of tugs back towards the mainland, leaving behind a dozen smoldering wrecks slipping below the waves as Bandit and Misono start climbing to link up with you and Vicky.

Vicky meanwhile was silent, or her comms were off. You wonder what the girl was thinking now, having survived her first mission.

Well, as far as first missions went, this wasn't too bad. At least you still had plenty of fuel to reach base this time.

It was short ride back to base, considering the Andersen wasn't too far off from it.

As your squadron lands and taxis to hangar, you glance over at Vicky, who was having trouble getting out of her cockpit. She looked like an absolute wreck, her body shaking and trembling like she was made out of wet noodles. She needed the help of one of the ground crew to get out.

After you see her take her helmet off, you could see that Vicky was DEFINITELY a mess. Her face was coated with sweat and she looked absolutely exhausted. Another ground crew tech hands her a water bottle, which she gladly snatches and sucks it dry in mere seconds.

Yeah, she was definitely coming down from her first combat high.

Honestly, you almost feel kinda sorry for Vicky. While your own initiation into combat wasn't particularly flattering, it was drilled into every Belkan pilot that their demeanor should always be setting an example for their comrades and subordinates.

Back in your days in One Belka, such a sad display would be disrespectful not only to herself, but to her commander and wingmate-

You quickly shake your head of that notion. Those days were waaaaaaaaaaay behind you.

The thing now was to see what you could do to cheer up Vicky. That was the proper thing to do in your role as her wingmate.

"Vicky! Great job out there!" You grin as you slap her on the back in an effort to snap her out of her funk. "Four kills in one mission? You almost made ace in a day!"

"W-what? Really?" Vicky blinks, the realization now dawning on her. "Four kills?"

"Drones count too, so that gives you a total of four!" You nod. "Don't worry, you did great today!"

"I... I guess I did." Vicky nods.

"And what should matter is, you both came back unharmed." Bandit says simply as he joins you, Misono following him like a loyal puppy. "Though, I should point out that with your previous kills accounted for, you're an official ace, Red."

Waitaminute.

Two Mig-29s and two drones this mission, the two drones during your trip over, combined with the S-32 you managed to bag a few years ago...

"Holy shit indeed." Bandit merely gives an approving smile and ruffles your hair like you were a kid or something.

The burning sensation in your face probably meant it was as bright red as your hair right now. And in front of the two nuggets, too!

"Anyways, I'm going to have to go get debriefed." Bandit continues, focusing on business as usual. "I suppose you need some time time to cool off?"

"Got it." Bandit nods. "It shouldn't take too long, but you've all go the rest of the day off."

He then looks up to the sky, which was starting to already turn a nice orange. A sign of dusk approaching.

"Well, what little is left anyways." You concludes before making his exit.

"I do have to congratulate you on your successes." Misono says, though you notice a bit of an annoyed pout in her expression. "Though I have to admit, it's a bit frustrating to be unable to secure any aerial kills myself on my first mission. Sinking a few gunboats doesn't quite have the same charm to it."

"I-I'm so sorry!" Vicky wails, bowing her head slightly.

"N-no, I didn't mean to disparage your achievements!" Misono quickly responds apologetically.

"Uuuuu, it's so stressful being an almost-ace!" Vicky whimpers.

You decide not to press the issue. If Vicky had some kind of complex about carriers, you figure it's not your place to pry.

"Great! Let's get going, then!" You grin.

"I will drive. I know the way to the port." Misono offers.

"Lead the way, then!' You nod.

It's not really much of a hassle to sign out a vehicle to go off base. Even though it was nominally a military organization, the IUNPF was mostly civilian run so regulations and standards were far looser, at least from what you've experienced in the Belkan SADF. No one so much as bats an eye as you get into the borrowed car, with Misono in the driver's seat.

You take shotgun, sitting next to Misono while Vicky somewhat meekly sits in the back. Misono quickly and calmly puts the car into gear and drives it out of the base, merging on to the highway and making a beeline straight for the port.

"It's nice being able to drive freely around the city again." Misono smiles proudly. "The Erusean occupation was rather... troublesome."

Ah that's right. The city of Selatapura was an independent city-state that had seceded from Erusea some years back, when the Lighthouse was first starting to get built. That caused a whole lot of butthurt within Erusea, but the secession was backed and recognized by Osea, under good old President Harling. You suppose part of the reason why the Eruseans attacked the Lighthouse was not only to seize it, but reclaim territory they believed was rightfully theirs.

"Yeah, military occupation is never too great." You sigh.

"Was that something you experienced, as a Belkan?" Misono asks. "I know that Osea seized and annexed the southern half of your country..."

"My family was in the south when the Oseans moved in, and... it was pretty bad." You sigh as you glance out the window. "Protests, riots, crackdowns... all the typical stuff that happens when law and order break down. We cleared out when it became obvious Osea wasn't leaving and was going to keep the south. I made it, but my parents didn't."

"I'm sorry to hear that." Misono shakes her head.

"That's so sad..." Vicky says sympathetically.

"But I hardly remember any of that shit. I was pretty young when it happened." You try to wave it off. "Besides, I still had my grandfather."

Man, Gramps. You loved him to death but now that you think about it, it was probably partly due to his fervent patriotism that you had the mind to join up with One Belka. You briefly wonder what he thought of you now, looking down from that big blue sky up there.

"Then I will take that lesson to heart, how fortunate my circumstances were." Misono says grimly.

"Don't sweat it. Shit happens." You try to play it off.

At this point, the port was quickly coming into view. If you had anything you wanted to ask Misono, you'd have to do it now.

"So uh, I don't mean to be offensive or anything, but what the hell is with that sword?" You ask Misono as you point towards the titular item, stowed away beside her seat within easy reach.

"Ah! It's an old family heirloom. The eldest warrior in our family always carries it into battle!"

"And, let me guess." You roll your eyes. "You're the first one to become a pilot?"

"Quite correct!" Misono chuckles. "Still, I'm obligated to bring it, even if there's no practical use for it. Traditions carry a great importance, after all."

"Well, anyways, we are here!" Misono announces.

By the time the three of you pile out of the car, you could see that quite the crowd has gathered on the shore as a small fleet of tugs attempts to jockey the massive Admiral Andersen into her drydock.

Down from this perspective, it really hit home just how MASSIVE the carrier was, the mighty steel construct towering over you like a small skyscraper. It was a far cry from the tiny gray rectangle you saw from the sky, which made it even harder to believe that at the peak of its power, the Osea had over a dozen of the damn things!

Did Belka ever have a chance, you wonder...?

"Hey, fancy seeing you here, Kid."

Your attention is piqued by the familiar voice, and you turn to see Mead, who gives you a casual wave.

"Mead? What are you doing here?" You blink.

"Well, it was getting a bit boring fixing up generators and refrigerators, so I figured I'd get back to fixing up some planes." Mead grins and holds up the tool box she's carrying. "I've been on the Andersen before so I know where's a treasure trove of planes tucked away in her hangars that could use some TLC."

She then glances over to Misono and Vicky, both still distracted by the carrier that they haven't even noticed her.

"Friends of yours?" She asks.

"My squadronmates." You reply.

"Not bad." Mead nods approvingly. "So hey, wanna get a look at the inside?"

"Of the carrier?" You blink.

"Duh, what else would I be talking about?" Mead rolls her eyes.

"Is that even allowed?"

"Look, the IUN owes me a TON of favors. Nobody's going to ask questions if it's me." Mead grins. "So how about it? You can bring your buddies along with you, too."

You glance at Mead, and then at the Andersen. The thought of stepping foot on an Osean carrier was pretty tempting...

"Sounds like a plan!" You grin. "Hey, Vicky! Misono! Wanna take a closer look?"

"Can we?!" Vicky gasps.

"That would certainly be interesting!" Misono nods.

"Well, our buddy Mead here is gonna give us a little tour!" You say, motioning to her.

"It's nothing, really." Mead laughs lightly. "Come on, let's check out the hangar, first."

You follow Mead up a gangplank into the carrier itself. Inside was just as tight and cramped as you imagined it would be, though you had to wonder just how many miles of hallway was snaking all around the massive ship. Mead leads you three through the carrier's labyrinthine with no issues at all. Well, she did say that this wasn't the first time she was on the ship.

Soon enough, Mead pulls a heavy bulkhead door open, revealing a hangar filled to the brim with aircraft of all types and makes. Each and everyone of them was in a partly dismantled state, their wings either folded our outright removed to maximize storage.

"So, these are all functional?" Vicky asks, her eyes wide in awe.

"Well, once they're reassembled, yeah." Mead nods. "Osea threw in every damn aircraft they could get their hands on to ship to the front so there's some pretty high end stuff in here."

Mead then grins and looks to you.

"Say, how do you feel about taking one of these babies back with you?"

Wait, what?

"That would be pretty cool." You grin but then pause. "Wait, what's the catch?"

"There's no catch!" Mead laughs. "Think of it as a reward. Not everyone in the IUN has a beef against Belka, and there's a bunch of guys smart enough to see good assets. Besides, we've suddenly got a huge surplus of planes and not enough pilots to fly them, so nobody's going to complain if we put a few of them to use."

"Is this really okay, though?" You wonder.

"Look, I've seen that Hornet of yours." Mead sighs. "Your people have done a good job keeping it flyable, but I'm going to be blunt here, it's a heap of junk. It's going to fall apart in two maybe three missions tops if you keep pulling max Gs in it. I put in a good word for you to get this requisition going, you know!"

"Well, if you put it that way, let's get this done then." You nod. "What have you got?"

"What are you looking for?" Mead grins.

"I'm kinda thinking of something heavy and fast." You say. "What have you got?"

"Hmmmm, well, let's see." Mead picks up a clipboard and reviews it. "Ah, that's perfect! Looks like we've got some F-14s, F-15s, Mig-31s, Su-30s."

Hmmm, well, the F-14 and F-15 were primarily Osean made aircraft, while the Mig-31 and Su-30 were more Yuktobanian deals. From your experience, Belka used both types of aircraft, so there wouldn't be any training or logistical complications.

The thing was, Osean birds tended to be a bit more all rounder, blending both air to air and air to ground capabilities, with some seriously sophisticated weaponry and avionics. On the other hand, Yuktobanian birds were a bit rougher and lower tech, but they generally had the edge in raw performance.

Hmmm, we seem to have a tie here and it's getting rather late, so I think we'll put up the vote again on the next thread so more people can get in on the vote!

Next thread is tentatively scheduled for next Friday. However, since it's the July 4 weekend, I can't promise I'll be able to run if some sort of last minute commitment comes up, but I'll be sure to let you know if it does!
