Finally after two years in the service of the Dark Queen Quintis you have finally been promoted. No more marching through filthy peasant villages administering the Queen's justice, this is your chance to rise through the ranks of her Majesty's armies and become one of her generals, or so you thought.

Being placed in a garrison out in the middle of nowhere wasn't the promotion you had imagined, but after the death of your commander, your rise through the ranks seemed that much more possible. Through your leadership, your garrison holds its ground through an assault and infiltration by rebel forces and manages to capture two of its heroes. After transporting the two of them to the Capital, Queen Quintis decided to promote you to Captain and to add you to her collection of personal agents.

Your first mission as an agent of the Queen was quite the ordeal, nearly dying to a shape shifting mage, getting stampeded by a mercenary cavalry charge, and getting shot full of arrows as well as stabbed lot. In the end however you stopped the mercenaries attacking imperial caravans, and uncovered that they had been hired by the the rebels to disrupt trade between imperial, and desert merchants.

This is not the end of your troubles however upon returning to the Capital, you find that the rebels weren't just sitting on their hands while you were gone. They had advanced much closer to the Capital and would likely be on your doorstep in weeks. Not one to sit on her hands, the Queen has given you a mission to help prepare for the coming battle by killing off the shamans assisting the rebels.

While the mission was difficult, and you suffered losses, in the end you succeeded. Killing many of the shamans and their supporting troops. With the mission finished, you find yourself waiting while the Queen and her generals decide how to finish off the rebel threat once and for all.

With a confident nod Selenas heads off to get Mildri and Aborea while you head farther up the column to get a better idea of the situation. When you reach the head of the march, the troops separate into their individual platoons before arraying themselves to face rebel forces. Only a couple of platoons had been arrayed for battle so far, but you could already see how the battle line would be laid out. The frontline and the bulk of the center would be heavy infantry ready to do the bloody day’s work. Behind them would be units of archers ready to volley over the front and into the rebel hordes. Mixed in with and slightly behind them would be the mages preparing to give the rebels some nasty surprises, and getting ready to counter any surprises the rebels might throw at them.
Ideas, plans, and strategies race through your mind as you take stock. You are a Captain meaning you will have some control over these men. As long as your orders don’t contradict the Major’s or the general battle plan you should be able to do what you want with them.

As more men file into position you have a quiet word with the mages telling them to hold off on casting anything unless you give the order. They give in to your authority easily enough and you have time to take a look at the rebel lines. From your current position, the land sloped gently down toward the river giving you a good view of the rebels. The rebel’s order of march was very clearly split. On the outside “lines”, if you could call them that, were peasant forces moving in a large mob. They were in total disarray and with no distinction between units. They were extremely numerous however and put a large number of bodies between you and the actual rebel army which was another story entirely. Morning sunlight glinting off their weapons and armor, the mix of mercenary and actually disciplined rebel troops moved in an ordered march behind the wall of peasants. While certainly not as numerous as the peasants they would be the harder to crack portion of the rebel force.

Looking from the massive rebel army to the currently assembling imperial force, your stomach starts twisting into knots. How are you going to take this thing down? Before that thought can unnerve you too much Selenas arrives with Mildri and Abroea. You fill them in on their new roles as Mildri finishes drying her tears. When you finish your explanation, Mildri opens her mouth to speak, but is cut off by a trumpet blast. Looking around, you find that while you were speaking with the mages, examining the enemy lines, and positioning your companions, the rest of the imperial forces had arrived. Men stretched in a thin line extent far out to your left and right. At the sound of the trumpet, your lines begin to advance.

>cont.
>>
>>3652729

You and your companions quickly fall in and join the advance. Sliding into the back row of the heavies at the front, you and Selenas adjust to the pace of the advance and listen to the thunder of feet and the clack of armor as the imperial forces move ever closer to the rebels. Looking over the rows of heavies in front of you, you watch the rebels waiting for them to react, but they show no sign of changing tactics. The rebels just keep advancing toward the crossing. It isn’t until you almost reach bottom the of the gently sloping hill that you see a small tendril of steel clad knights take off through the rows of peasants and rush toward the crossing.

The trumpets give a second blast and the advance stops. Behind you, you hear a shout “ARCHERS DRAW!” You echo the shout as do a few other officers. The sound of hundreds of arrows being pulled from quivers sounds around you as a second shout rings out “AIM,” The archers lift up their bows to arch their shots over the heavies. There is a long moment of silence then. You can almost hear your heart pounding inside your chest. You look to Selenas standing by your side. She gives you a nervous smile which you return. “FIRE!” the order comes and hundreds of arrows are loosed and flit past over your head.

The arrows race across the battlefield in a dark cloud that settles onto the mob of peasants. You hear screams, shouts, and cries echo from the peasants as the arrows make solid contact, just beyond the front row of peasants, yet oddly enough and entire swath of peasants lay dying along the arrows path. You don’t have much time to consider this however as the trumpets blast again and the order to advance is given. The front ranks begin to move, slowly at first, but picking up speed. The trumpet sounds yet again and the Major’s voice carries to you over the clack of metal plates, the thunder of feet, and the constant draw, aim, fire commands being given by the archer lieutenants. “CHARGE!” he bellows and a roar of shouts goes up from the heavies as they go from a quick jog to a full on sprint. Volleys of arrows continue to fly overhead and pincushion the peasant ranks as the charge draws ever closer.

Then suddenly a brilliant flash of light blinds you. You stagger and stop running, unable to see where you are going. You try to blink the light away, but it isn’t disappearing. You only realize you aren’t totally blind when your vision adjusts and the shapes of people are outlined in shadow in front of you. The roars of charge had been replaced with grunts and groans of pain as men try to shield their faces from the intense light. You hold up your hand to blot out the light to little effect. Squinting in the intense brightness you try to find what is making that horrible light. Then you hear it, a roar and the thunder of feet, a counter charge. More silhouettes appear on the horizon, as their collective shadow falls across your face, you are able to make out a little more. The light had blinded and broken your charge, the heavies were milling about still trying to see, and the peasant mob was only moments from smashing into your unprepared ranks.

>This will be the last post of the night as I am falling asleep at my keyboard.

As shock and fear dulls your thoughts, something flits past our foot racing toward the charging peasants. You watch as it slips forward in the long shadows cast by the peasants and makes contact. Shrieks and screams replace the roars of the peasant charge and chaos erupts in their ranks. You and the heavies can only listen unable to see anything as the screams get louder and more widespread. Then slowly the blinding light ascends higher into the sky reliving your eyes but turning the world into a world of contrast with no color only darkness and light. As the light ascends the shadows from the peasants recede. In the shortening shadows a dark shape darts back toward your lines. It passes by you and starts toward the archer line when the shadows cast by your own men shorten and the shape is exposed to the light. It lets out an ear piecing shriek that forces you to clamp your hands over your ears. The shape sizzles and steams in the light and its shriek decreases in pitch and start to sound almost human. Then a tendril of inky blackness lashes out and attaches itself to you. The dark shape zips over to you in an instant and begins to work its way through the gaps in your armor. You try to scrap it off to no avail, the darkness seeps into your armor and you begin to hear whispers.

They are faint, at the edge of hearing. The words, at least you think they are words, are incomprehensible and spoken in a dozen voices. Suddenly one voice speaks clearly and so close it sounds like it was spoken into your ear. “Charge Captain, cut a swath through this rabble and bring me the bitch’s head.” You recognize the voice almost instantly.

“Your grace?”

“Yes, Captain it’s me. Now get moving.” The Queen snaps her tone impatient.

You turn your focus out word as the Queen’s insistence and take stock. The heavies were still milling about in confusion, unsure of what to do. The archers had stopped firing and no commands or trumpet were sounding, the whole army was still in shock from the light. Your enemies were no better off though. The peasant charge had been halted and they were in disarray with many of them dead and dying. A charge now could break them, but getting your heavies together again might give them time to reform as well. Then again time to reform might be just what you need, it might give the rest of the army time to get moving again to provide support, but the Queen wanted you to get in there now.

>What do?

>Charge now, you’ve got to get in there and break up the peasants before they refrom. If you charge the heavies might just catch on and follow.

>Take the time to coordinate a charge. A sloppy charge now could spell disaster if you’re going to charge you’d better do it right.

>Damn the Queen, the army needs time to reform, pull back and let the generals do their thing.

Rolled 6, 18, 13 = 37 (3d20)

You need to charge now and break the peasants before they can ready themselves again. The plan not only made sense, but it was a command from the queen herself. You raise a shout and sprint through the line of heavies toward the peasants bellowing “CHARGE!” Your bold action and extremely loud shout snap the soldiers out of their stupor and the ones nearest you all take off after you, though none as quickly as Selenas who is hot on your heels as you approach the scattered and unorganized peasant mob.
As you approach where the peasant lines had started you are assaulted, first by the smell. It was the smell of blood, bile, and spilled entrails but concentrated and piped almost directly up your nose. Then you are assaulted by the sights and the sounds. Your first step on to the peasants’ position is greeted not by the sound of more grass rustling under foot, but by squish of liquid saturated ground. You steal a glance at your feet as you run and see why. The whole area was covered by a paste of blood and bone and gristle. You could find the occasional chunk of flesh or shard of bone, but nothing bigger than your hand. It was as if a stone wall had fallen on this chunk of the peasant mob and crushed it flat. Pulling your eyes away from the scene at your feet and holding down your breakfast as best you could, you continue to squish and slosh your way over the battlefield and toward the peasants. The rebel you see is a young boy wide eyed, shaking with fear, and clutching a spear. Seeing you charge in, he lowers his spear at you and takes a few steps back. You move closer to engage readying your glaive, but when you get within 10 feet of the boy, a shaft of darkness shoots out of your armor from underneath your armpit and catches the boy in the face. His head jerks backward and he collapses onto the ground.
“I will handle these wretches Captain,” the queen’s voice breathes in your ear, “Continue on toward that luminous whore.”
Obeying the queen’s command you resume your charge toward the peasant lines. Behind you trumpets sound as the imperial forces shake off their shock from the flash of light and get back to the business of battle. The heavies who had followed you continue their own charges and engage with small groups of peasants who break almost instantly and try to fall back to the main group, but they are simply cut down on the retreat by the heavies. The push continues as you charge toward the peasant mobs that had managed to pull back and regroup with the main mass.

>cont.
>>
>>3663577

They had arrayed themselves in a sort of spear wall and as you approach the mass bristles and points its spears at you. You brace yourself once again to charge into the enemy, but once again, 10 feet out the queen acts. Tendrils of darkness snake out of all the gaps and shady spots of your armor and lash out at the peasants. Some tendrils strike quickly stabbing out killing a peasant and retreating back into the armor, others though are a bit messier lashing out in wide arcs that cut men in two and send others flying. You barrel into the peasants, a one man cavalry charge, and cut a swath into their lines. The peasants panic, they break and run in a desperate bid to escape the queen’s attacks. They trample and run over each other and sow chaos throughout their ranks making the heavies charge that much more effective. They slam hard into the peasant line and start hacking their way through, but much more slowly than you. With the queen aiding you, you carve a path through the peasants as fast as you can run. Troops pour in behind you taking advantage hole you'd punched in the rebel lines to further push the peasants. You are moving so fast through the rebels that you soon reach the second layer of better equipped and experienced veterans and mercenaries under the rebels employ, but just as before the queen swats them aside and you continue on unopposed. As you pass deeper into the rebel lines however, the veterans and mercenaries don't break. They certainly do their best to avoid you, but instead of fleeing before you, flow around you and fill in to close the gap behind you cutting you off from the rest of the charge and blunting its penetrating power. You are alone now save for Selenas who had managed to stay close by you throughout the charge. All around the both of you were the elite of the rebel army and they weren’t going to stand idle for you to push on to their leader. Javelins and spears, as well as rocks and other projectiles are hurled at you and Selenas as the two of you push toward the large collection of banners in the center of the rebel position. The projectiles don’t even get near you as the queen swats them down mid-flight. Selenas however isn’t as lucky and while none of the projectiles manages to skewer her, a few hard knocks by thrown stones and some glancing javelin shafts give her some cuts and bruises.

>Push harder, the sooner you reach Falenta, the rebel leader, the sooner you’ll be out of this rain of projectiles, if you move fast enough you just might catch more than a few of the throwers.

>Slow your charge and have Selenas stand closer to you under the queen’s protection. You’ll make slower time to Falenta and give the rebels more time to strategize, but you’ll protect Selenas.

>Fall back and regroup with the heavies, if you’re going to breach these lines and push on to Falenta in relative safety, you’ll need the support of the heavies.

“Run close to me,” you shout to Selenas as you push forward “I’ll keep you covered.”

Selenas sprints closer to you, but not before more projectiles speed at her. She is pelted once again and one spear slashes her side as it passes dangerously close leaving a bleeding cut in her side. Selenas nonetheless grits her teeth and gets close enough to you that the queen’s dark tendrils cover her as well.

>Selenas health 14/20

With Selenas now next to you, the two of you push forward, safe from the rocks, spears, and javelins. Even when a few of the rebel mages fling fire, cutting winds, spikes of earth and stone, and every other kind of magical attack at you, the queen deflects it all with ease and even returns a few eliminating nearby soldiers as well as the mage who had cast the attack. Through the withering rain of attacks you finally arrive at the center of the rebel forces. There behind a line of truly fearless and loyal fanatics was the woman herself Falenta. She was the epitome of beauty with her soft radiant skin, long blonde hair that fell down past her shoulders, and easy blue eyes that could drown you if you looked into them for too long. Seeing you arrive in her midst she gives you an easy smile that tests your resolve even at this critical moment. “Captain Baldr,” her voice is a song that is sweeter than the richest honey “I’ve heard a great many things about you. I’ve heard it’s you we have to thank for the capture of Valenca and…” She breaks off as her eyes find Selenas. “Oh Selenas dear, what have they done to you. Come closer child, let me get a good look at you.”

Selenas remains steadfastly at you side. “Oh my, they truly have brainwashed you haven't they. Don't worry I will save you child." Falenta says extending her hand in invitation.

Her words are strong and as she speaks you start to feel light headed, the very air becomes sticky sweet, and you have to fight to not go rushing into Falenta's arms.

Selenas doesn't show any sign of influence and in fact takes a step closer to you.
>>
>>3685215

"Enough of this," the queen hisses in your ear. In a one quick swipe a tendril of darkness shoots out of your armor and cuts down the line of fanatics between you and Falenta. The pressure you had felt moments ago disappears and Falenta's calm composure cracks as her lips curl in disdain and she turns to glare at you.

She opens her mouth to speak but the queen sends another shaft of darkness speeding toward Falenta. Nearly as fast as the queen's attack Falenta raises her arms and an opaque wall of light fades in to intercept the attack. The tendril strikes the wall and instantly dissipates into nothingness. “So you’ve come.” Falenta shouts from behind her wall “Good, that saves me the trouble of dragging you out of your tower,” she says all the sweetness from her voice gone. “Caulder, my shield,” the giant of a main rises up, unseen from behind the wall of light.

“Yes milady,”

“Tear the Captain open and force the queen out of her hiding place would you?”

“It will be done milady,” Caulder replies and he walks forward through the wall of light. As he passes through it, the light envelops him and his armor begins to shine brightly. The queen lances out at him only to have her attack dissipate as it hits the giant’s armor.

“Gut him Captain and let’s be done with this.” The queen says. As Caulder approaches, Selenas steps closer to you, “Don’t do this Caulder, don’t make me fight you,” Selenas pleads.

“Surrender then,” Caulder grunts as he advances steadily toward you.

“I can’t do that,” Selenas answers and Caulder offers no further words as her breaks into a charge and rushes the both of you.

As Caulder closes, you and Selenas split going to either side of the charging giant. Seeing you split, Caulder swings his hammer in a wide arc attempting to catch you both in his swing. Moving deftly, you back step and let the hammer go by, then move in quickly to strike at his armpit. Your glaive makes solid contact, but is slowed as it passes through the corona of light around the giant and by the mail protecting his joint. With a jerk of his torso, Caulder twists out of your strike and extending his own sweeping attack toward Selenas who is about to be caught in the giant hammer’s arc.

Enemy rolls: 16,19,11 = (17)*2 + 4 [Expert] + 2 [Lady’s Presence] = 40

17 – 40 = -23 damage

Bonuses: -23 – 3[Judgement] +1 [Armor] + 2[Queen’s aid] = 23 damage negated by Savior’s Plate

You grit your teeth and restrain yourself as the hammer blow clips Selenas as she tries to get out of the way. The force of the blow spins her and sends her tumbling on to the ground shouting in pain and clutching her shoulder where the hammer had landed. “Fall back and heal,” you shout at Selenas as you rush forward to take the heat off of her. She rolls away just in time as Caulder’s lightening quick back swing catches you completely off guard. His hammer flies back at you, but just before it impacts you, the jewel in the center of your armor shines out creating a barrier of blue light. The hammer comes to a full stop as it contacts the barrier give you time to dance away as the light fades and Caulder takes a second swing at you.

Trying to use Caulder’s rallying strike, several more men attempt to join the fray and surround you. They lack Caulder’s protection however and the queen strikes down any who attempt to help.

As you prepare yourself for Caulder’s next attack, you feel a strange lump of bile in your throat and a hot anger begins to boil just under your skin. Throwing aside the two potion bottles she had just drunk, Selenas takes her place back at your side as you face off against Caulder once again.

>Selenas is at 20/20 health

What do:

>Fall back, this fight is too much, you need more support.

>Attack again you’ve got the feeling this time will be different.

Now we have a jinx to get to

>Send Selenas to [Write In]
Tell her telepathically to make the signal to the mages so they can open a path to our heavies if that is possible, but tell hee to remain near, she'll join the fight here next round

Reaching out through the ring you say to Selenas, “Signal the mages, we need their help.”

Selenas responds with a nod and takes a step back from you and raises her sword in the air while you move to engage Caulder.

question, since we were saved by the armour, did we keep the untouchable bonus? and if so, did it rise to 2?

Do anons wish to use their jinx you currently stand to lose 8 health.
>>

You are technically correct

You stand to lose 6 health
>>

If you use the jinx you would deal 1 damage.

I rather save it for a crit from him or something like that, take the 6

Your rolls: 2,4,18 = (8) + 3 [Veteran] + 1 [Stance] + 1 [Oaken Strength] + 2 [Untouchable] = 15

Enemy rolls: 16,13,17 = (15) + 4 [Expert] + 2 [Lady’s Presence] = 21

15– 21 = -6 damage

Bonuses: -6 – 3[Judgement] +1 [Armor] (Negated by Judgement) + 2[Queen’s aid] = 6 damage received

Closing with Caulder once more, you duck under his first swing take a swipe at the back of his knee. Caulder twists however letting his knee guard take the blow instead. With the grace of a dancer he pivots and swings his hammer, this time as you try to dodge out of the way a flash of golden light goes off in the corner of your eye blinding you for just a moment. A moment too long, you can only watch as the giants hammer swings at your head. It is then the queen acts tendrils of darkness shoot out of your armor and push you forward, closer to the giant so instead of having the head of the giant’s massive war hammer crush your skull, the hammer’s long handle slams into your shoulder and throws you to the side. Pain erupts from your left arm and shoulder as you land and roll in the dirt.

You recover quickly though and get back to your feet. The blow had dented your left pauldron and made your arm stiff and tingle with pain when you move it. You don’t have time to focus on your arm for long though as a commotion is starting over by Selenas. As the last few golden rays of light fade from her sword, a cacophony of sound erupts from the direction of the battle lines. Crashes and booms and shouts and screams echo loudly over the battlefield and suddenly peasants break through the rear line of soldiers and stream though running everywhere in a terrified panic. Confusion is everywhere as the peasants panic begins to spread to the other soldiers who don’t look as sure of themselves. Seizing your moment you…

>Charge Caulder, he won’t be able to maneuver as well in this crowd.

>Fall back to your own lines, you’re going to need some help from your troops.

>Push for Falenta maybe you can get to her in this sea of confusion.

With a bit of a write in

"My queen, I'm going for Falanta, when I attack her, do not do it with me, go for her body guard"

When Caulder sees us rushing his waifu he will charge us full speed, and when we attack Falanta, maybe, just maybe, she will drop Caulder's defense bubble to focus on defending herself, since she probably expects the Queen to go all out on her, because that is the usual Queen strategy, and then, with Falanta distracted, the Queen can get the big guy(for you)

For all his problems, I hope Caulder survives this, even if in a broken mess.

I'll change to this too
Faints are usually a strange concept to mages since they solve problems by judicious application of force

and just to make it canon that Baldr has the appropriate set of balls necessary to tell the Queen what to do.

I think the point is Caulder following us unless you are thinking of throwing the smoke bomb at Falenta

With peasants rushing all around, all it takes for you to disappear is to duck down and you are at once lost in the seething tide of humanity. “Your grace, I’m going to attack Falenta, but when I do I need you to focus on her body guard. If I push Falenta she will likely be unable to maintain that barrier around her bodyguard then you will be able to bring him down."

“Clever,” the queen remarks “and it just might work, go on captain.”

Moving swiftly, you circle around Caulder and come up just behind Falenta. As you charge forward however, Caulder’s head snaps around, he’s spotted you. Like ship breaking waves Caulder plows his way through the sea of humanity between you and him. He arrives just in time to interpose himself between you and Falenta. You reel back to avoid a crushing blow from Caulder’s hammer that takes out several peasants who were try to slip past. You circle around him some more trying to find an in, but Caulder stays tight to Falenta. That is when you notice that Falenta was straining. Her tender face was screwed up in concentration. The heavy task of maintain the light in the sky, her own barrier, and Caulder’s shield was wearing her down.

The tide of peasants was running out and as the last few rush past, the sounds of battle return much closer that they were before. Selenas runs up to join you as you face off against Caulder once again.

>The battle lines are closer now, fall back and regroup with your forces.

>Keep the pressure on and hit Caulder again.

Selenas, keep him busy, we tell her with telepathy

and we go for Falanta circling him around, he can either face selenas or come after us and leave his back open for her
>>
>>3690602
This, let's make him chose(he will obviously chose her) and be open for attack, but more importantly, keep the pressure on the mage

With jinx Selenas stands to deal 1 damage.

If you so wish
