/qst/ - Quests

In 1996, the Rapture happened.

It is now the fall of 1999.

Nicolae Carpatescu - the Antichrist, according to some religious fanatics - has solidifies his grip on the world, and has tapped you to launch a global cashless system to drag the world economy into the 21st century kicking and screaming.

You are the faceless man who runs the internet, or at least, the physical web of wires and antennas that underlies it.

You have been warned by said religious fanatics that the world may have more or less five years to live - their predictions, so far, have mostly checked out.

Your mission: Keep the Internet alive. Even in the face of Armageddon.
>>
Hello, Foreman! You are planning CATS' operations for the month.

Rules: http://emlia.org/pmwiki/pub/web/LeftBeyond.Quest2Rules.html
Datalinks: http://emlia.org/pmwiki/pub/web/LeftBeyond.Quest2Datalinks.html
Tentative timeline: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1BlMOSEOxSihj1gdagq7yxCjONaRBgcdlRxnc68uWf0A

You can deploy yourself on TWO actions for a small bonus to all rolls. Your Nomenklator system can be issued to ONE team per turn, for a small bonus to all rolls.

Dr. Robertson can be deployed on ONE action for a large bonus to R&D rolls or a small bonus to any non-covert rolls.

Ryan Andrews can be deployed on ONE action for a large bonus to construction rolls or a small bonus to any non-covert rolls.

Moira McSingh can be deployed on ONE action per turn, for a medium bonus to covert rolls or a small bonus to all rolls. She can give basic combat capability to a work crew.

Aki Lattinen can be deployed on TWO actions per turn, for a medium bonus to R&D or construction rolls. She will hack into things if bored.

Performing an action outside of your home territory will also require the availability of (complexity) fleet assets, OR renting them at the cost of 1/asset.

C0 (Free):

Move the Garibaldi (Mediterranean, Arctic, Atlantic, Indian, Pacific).

Track someone (max 3)

Buy equipment on the open market:
Power generation 1
Small arms 1
Network equipment 2
Fleet assets 2
Aerospace part 3
Supplies (food, fuel etc) 0.5

C0 (Agent):

Survey a territory for opportunity using an agent. Not surveyed: Northern Europe, Western Europe, China, India, Greenland, Japan, Indochina, Pacific Islands, Afghanistan,

Madagascar, Sahara, Central Africa, Israel, Middle East, Western Russia

Construct a CellSol pylon (Needs 1 network part)

Undergo combat training (Max 1 per month)

Tail someone.

Buy equipment on the black market:
Small arms 1
Squad weapons 2
Stimulants 1

C1:

Reconfigure the Garibaldi (generic, cargo, hospital, strike, orbital)

Tail someone.

Survey a territory for opportunity using a team.

Hire out a covert operations team for a situational reward.

Construct network equipment.

Procure network equipment and construct a CellSol pylon.

Make and sell consumer-grade Nomenklators (Net gain 1BN).

C2:

Do research (1~3).

Construct an aerospace part.

Construct a logistics hub (cap 1 fleet requirement for that territory; can deploy covert teams there with no advance notice; costs 1 power; stores supplies)

C3:

Recruit a work team.

Schedule a satellite launch, which will happen at the end of NEXT month. Requires an aerospace part.

Do research (4~6).

C4:

Recruit a covert team.

Do research (7~9).

Construct a network node. (unifies cell and net; costs 1 power, 1 network)

Start DEW research.

C5:

Rush a satellite launch, which will happen at the end of this month. Requires 1 aerospace part.

Construct a base and a network node at the same time (2 power, 1 network)

Do research (10).

What are your orders?

So how does our girlfriend feel about more factories?
>>
(Huh. That title doesn't sound ominous)

Survey either Japan or Pacific Islands. If possible with Carla with a mindset for studying the architecture used to withstand seismic events. The Apocalypse is dark and full of earthquakes; we don't want to lose our facilities due to an act of God, do we?

(What is DEW research again?)
>>
>>3696044
Ok plan is
>4 teams make/sell nomenclature
>4 cover team work with moira

This brings our funds to 10.

Factory make network
>2 team make network
Place in austrailia, Briton, and India.
>4team research logistics with aki
>4 team researching nuclear with Robertson this will let us male a nuclear generator right? The nuke wont be helpful.

>>3696084
Direct energy weaponry like lazers and plasma and shit. I would like them once we have nuclear power.
>>
>>3696044
Wait shouldn't we have gotten our quarterly budget this month?

>>3696084
>Survey either Japan or Pacific Islands. If possible with Carla with a mindset for studying the architecture used to withstand seismic events. The Apocalypse is dark and full of earthquakes; we don't want to lose our facilities due to an act of God, do we?
Almost certainly a good idea. I'd also suggest studying Indian or SEA construction techniques that deal with annual floods / extreme rain so that is taken care of.

>(What is DEW research again?)
Direct Energy Weapon: lasers and shit. They have limited benefits but are honestly not a focus for now.
>>
>>3696101
Forgot individual actions

>we visit rosewig try and make a deal for fertilizer.
>we undergo combat training in south america
>aki's second action is individual research
>Ryan will try and get us more factory permits in south africa.
>>
>>3696109
Thats a good odea i change my vote for personal action from combat training to vsiit pacific island's
>>
Japan also has a lot of technology worth exploring too. If we want to have the tech edge in Armageddon, it would be fruitful to invest.

>>3696109
Good idea! I don't know if flooding is involved in one of the Judgments (maybe the Seventh Bowl?) but they would be worth investing due to to coastline issues like Tsunamis.
>>
>>3696084
4 covert teams working with Moira

1 teams make high grade nomenklators to replace the ones we gave away to Santiago.

3 teams make and sell normal nomenklators
4 teams on research Ai With aki
4 teams research preparedness with Robertson.

Okay, We go survey Pacific islands, and Andrews surveys Japan?
>>
>>3696150
Can we spend an action looking for recruitable field agents?
>>
>>3696101

So full action so far.

>4 teams make/sell nomenclature
>4 cover team work with moira
This brings our funds to 10.
>Factory make network
>3 team make network
>Place in austrailia, Briton, northeast russia and inda.

>4team research logistics with aki
>3 team researching nuclear with Robertson

>us visit rosewig try and make a deal for fertilizer
>us survay japan and oacific islands with carla with a mindset of studying archtecture used to withstanding seismic events.
>aki do individual research
>Ryan work on getting more factory permits.
>>
>>3696150
Works for me~!
>>
>>3696157
I thought selling nomenclature's gave us 2bn every turn?
>>
>>3696167
Nope it only gives us 1 says so in the Mainpost. So
>>3696150
Wont give us enough money and there are also 2 work teams not doing anything
>>
>>3696109

You will get your quarterly funds at the end of this month. (Or did I completely mess everything up? I don't think so).

>>3696156

Yes; you'd have to send someone, or better yet go yourself, to survey an area.

>>3696167

Gives you 1, however, you can have the factory produce them at 1/month, and then have 1 team sell the whole stock in one month. Artificial scarcity creates demand, although you're going to see competition in a little bit. You did get rid of a potential competitor earlier in the year by making them look like idiots and work on inaccurate data: they ended up trying to hire your own security team to spy on you!

>>3696157

this good for everyone?
>>
Works for me
>>
>>3696231
Sure lets go.
>>
Geist are you doing the "let me put something in a quest that shows up in the news later" thing again?

https://hardware.slashdot.org/story/19/07/26/2129254/leaked-documents-reveal-saudi-arabias-plans-for-its-next-megacity

>>3696157

Looks good. The "government agency people selling stuff on the side to make the end of the month" thing is very Russian...
>>
>>3696553
At least its not state assets or literally stripping out the copper and metal from the walls and selling it.

We make our shit and sell.
>>
>>3696553
I wonder what Zakharov is up to these days. We heard there were rumors of him conducting unethical experiments on his population. An effect of him (possibly) getting brainwashed by Carpatescu?

Zakharov's territory was not affected by the plutonium dust (much) but rumor has it that he has exposed various people (here the stories vary: criminal prisoners, Jews, potential dissidents, Remnant, neo-communists, LGBT folk) to the stuff, just to see what it does. Unfortunately, these stories are mixed in with other conspiracy nonsense such as chemtrails and the Gangster Computer God Worldwide Secret Containment Policy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJLhnts9-oQ

At the very least, it's likely that he's read Robertson's papers -- which, after all, were published, just not in major journals -- and has people working on the same problem.

You set your work teams to produce Nomenklators and sell them on the open market immediately; making the gadgets available to a wider audience after a couple months' wait ensures that they sell quickly and well, although they face a little bit of pushback on nascent social media - there's quite a few Livejournal posts about people using the Nom in public being creepy. Case mods are starting to be a thing, the most popular being a small camera mount. Other bloggers are praising the Nom for having resulted in, of all things, more bikers and cyclists wearing their helmet, since Nom-compatible bike helmets were one of the first third party accessories to emerge.

Moira takes advantage of the Garibaldi being in the Mediterranean to take on relatively the relatively straightforward work of

# escorting Egyptians leaving for the northeastern part of their former country

# protecting towns like Siwa and Kharga from Rebohoth's men "imposing sanctions" by naked looting

# protecting towns like Siwa and Kharga from the Peacekeepers under Rebohoth's control, which is more difficult since, color of law aside, they are better equipped

# using the carrier as a way to take people to Sicily

# a mix of the above

as well as spreading out a little bit by

# supporting the Rose Island separatists against Od Gustav's forces

# supporting Gustav against the separatists

# assisting Folgore's men in tracking down Angra Mainyu

# ensuring that Mr. Mainyu remains hard to track down

# none of the above

Interestingly, after the airport attacks, there has been a small resurgence of private military outfits; your best analysis is that a few of those were picked up by the nationalists have seen the end of that particular mess and have gone their disparate way.

Dr. Robertson asserts that he would like to start gearing up for a "proper" nuclear test: he believes that

"Like I said, Foreman, I am overall very happy with this particular genie having gone back in the bottle. But we should know what it takes to achieve nuclear initiation. I don't believe that the rules of the universe have changed; the neutron anomaly seems circumscribed to this solar system. And just as whatever field or effect came in, it will go out, some day - I want to make sure we don't all spontaneously blow up on that day."
>>
Rolled 93, 23 = 116 (2d100)

>>3699190

Dr. Robertson decides to start with uranium hydride: the technology was found to be very prone to fizzling, and never developed. In theory, the apparent changes in nuclear physics would make a uranium hydride design even less likely to work, but Dr. Robertson notes that at this point reinventing the wheel is justifiable.

# Use our server farm to run a variety of simulations.

# Use our server farm to run preliminary simulations, then prepare for a live test. This will use up 0.25 units of nuclear fuel.

In the meantime, Aki is having possibly a little bit too much fun: the rough doubling of consumer Nomenklator units on the market is an excellent excuse to collect voice search data. You're years away from voice recognition that works reliably without training it first, and that's unlikely to change any time soon, but she's pretty sure that training times can be reduced to maybe a couple of hours. This in turn gets her to look into genetic algorithms, with the result that the small robots that you've had underfoot for a few months now are getting better at dodging people's feet.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kk-H--e6PUs

You ask Aki to

# look into the MCP.

# look into whatever system the Commodity Co-Op is using.

# Keep working at her own pace.

Aki is not a very good lab manager - if anything, she makes R&D efforts less focused, not more. However, she has an idea a minute, and doesn't care one iota for academic politics, which your coders and software engineers find very much to be a morale boost.

You decide to go on a trip this month, ending it

# back home; you'll talk to Carpatescu by remote.

# in New Babylon to talk to the boss in person.

Since your efforts have been both effective and visible, and you haven't been summoned directly, you still have the privilege to - more or less - decide how to tackle the quarterly meeting; Carpatescu is inhumanly busy, and has generally encouraged this. He also gives you the option to meet with his second-in-command, Leon Fortunato; you know that if that was a command rather than an option, it would mean a loss of status in the administration, and taking that on may still be seen as such, but then you wouldn't have to worry about Carpatescu's mesmerism (presumably).

Your fact-finding trip starts in California, where you find that the LAX and SFO airports have largely been rebuilt, as well as a huge amount of barge and dredge activity. Carla is worried about adding too many skyscrapers to San Francisco's skyline, but praises the fact that all new construction and a significant part of the existing construction has installed smart earthquake-proof valves.

Meantime, you send Ryan to look around for other opportunities to build a factory that you have at least semidirect control over,

# mentioning that it will be added to the Synco system - which you should really find a permanent name for - that is proving its worth in South America.

# leaving the automation stuff alone for now.

(Derp, my bad)

Mainyu Mazda, known as Double-M, is a black market dealer operating out of Iran and whose reach extends to India, Russia and the Arabian peninsula.

Carpatescu has odd but strict rules on the drug trade in New Babylon: most drugs are permitted and in fact are sold in the open, but a few (notably, meth and heroin) are clamped down upon, largely to preserve the pristine appearance of the city. Mainyu is the only one who's managed to consistently scratch that itch in the world capital, and get away with it.
>>
>>3700039
Lets find out more about this guy first, might be nice to have antoher arms dealer on our contact list.

But he does sell drugs..... Maybe we can get him to research combat stims for us, and try to steer him away from drug dealing.

Does Klaus or that other arms dealer guy deal in drugs?

Can we ask Mr Klaus what his opinion is of him...... More like phrase it as, how would he feel about working with Mr Mazda?
>>

Yeah, looking for combat stims that have little to no additive qualities but give performance boosts like Pervitin. We'd probably have to research and develop it, for a more refined product.

A few quick inquiries confirm that the next hot thing on the market is called Eye Candy - it's taken like eye drops, and allows for great boosts of endurance. Side effects are unknown so far; it was designed as a raver drug, but found to only boost wakefulness rather than make for a fun experience. You suspect some Silicon Valley types are using it.

(Sorry for the disappearance. See robot fish as to why)

>>3699922

You keep your security teams in northern Africa; having the Garibaldi there allows for quick deployment and, since her radar has been restored to full function and the land you're operating in is fairly flat, the occasional ability to get the drop on the other guys.

Aki is fascinated by the MCP idea, nearly as much as she is by the Synco system; she finds the old code to be very efficient and elegant. The offset of this is, of course, that the people working alongside her find it friggin unreadable... who uses self-modifying code in 1999 except maybe people writing renderers for 3DFX cards?

>>3700155

Mainyu Mazda seems to have found a niche in supplying New Babylon with the sort of excesses that Carpatescu finds it sensible to deem excessive; rumor has it that he's managed to talk Fortunato into ignoring his activities, or at least ensuring that only the small fish working for him get caught when it's time for some personnel turnover.

>>3699922

At this rate, the portion of Egypt still under Rebohoth's control is going to soon be a collection of ghost towns; Moira ensures that this happens in a mostly organized way. Thanks to your control of the cell phone network and the Garibaldi's sensors, the various thugs in uniform almost always arrive just in time to find houses and workshops emptied, family shrines cleared out, and heavy equipment stripped of expensive parts, or even sabotaged.

Until they lay a trap, that is....

>>3702521

Dr. Robertson has, in record time, built a small uranium hydride bomb. He's going to be testing it

# in the frozen north, near the nuclear mine, safely under the earth.

# by dropping it from the Garibaldi, in the Mediterranean.

(more to come, again, apologies for disappearing for a bit)

>>3702521

Aki notes that like Synco, the Burroughs MCP was a technical triumph, but it belongs to a different era, of centralized mainframes rather than decentralized computing nodes. She notes that it's inherently highly secure, but its processing speed - she figures that the best it could ever do is run things 900 to 1200 times faster than a human, which isn't much these days - makes it vulnerable to being overwhelmed.

"If we were to place and cancel a lot of orders with systems that it controls, and I mean a lot - tens of thousands per second - it would probably go into maintenance mode until someone reset it. The good thing is that it's a really simple trick; the bad thing is that it's expensive, since we'd lose money on commissions and so on."
>>
>>3710601
Ah, I see, you are making an anti dolphin rape prevention device.

A noble cause, but it can't undo the psychological damages already done.

# in the frozen north, near the nuclear mine, safely under the earth.

Glad you are finally back.

Is there some way we can frame Dimmsdale for any fallout?
>>
>>3711163
Well there probably wont be any so its a non concern
>>
>>3711163
Political or radioactive?
>>
>>3711362
Either its solidly in our land so no one should notice we could even put out an earthquake warning if its bad as we control internet and tv. And radioactivity is dead. At worst there will be plutonium dust but thats not going to be particularly troublesome.
>>
>>3711372
or we can just secretly take over or put out of service all the seismic sensors on the continent.
>>
Lets not blame our landlord, if possible. Having one Subpotentate gunning for us is bad enough....
>>
>>3711552
Dimmsdale is clearly controlled by Cappy.

Heart and soul, he's a sellout.

Personally, I think it's even more important to engineer a replacement of him because he's our landlord than Reheboth.

Robby is a known and controllable distant threat, but everyone takes him so seriously that they've ignored Dimmy whose morally flexible attitude has been easy to work with.

But he's a snake at our feet. He's gonna bite us.
>>
>>3711754
Don't worry, we will never be able to kill him before the clock runs out at this point.

Might be easier to keep him alive so when the time comes we can directly influence which "3 Kings" die on the day.

Also he seems fairly okay compared to what little we know of the other guys. How do you figure hes a total sellout?
>>
Honest question, could we talk Carpatescu out of being the Antichrist? No Gods, No Masters. Only Man.
>>
>>3712068
I feel he might contest the "No Masters" point, since he is one himself.
>>
>>3712068
It wouldn't work. You can't convince someone driven by literal story stage strings to stop being a character unless you can cut them off from the strings.
>>
>>3712068
The only time we could do that is if we prevent him from being killed thus ofsetting the prophesy. honestly we should look into how to resurrect people from several types of deaths to as well to make sure he dosnt really die.
>>
>>3711765

Assuming we even get rid of Dimsdale, who's to say his successor will be better? Carpatescu will just find another similar patsy to fill the void

Instead, we should take advantage of the Subpotentate's personality flaws and vices for our own ends. He obviously cares about making money and business... Ergo, use that to pull his strings.

We've got to be subtle.

>>3712068

It probably would be too difficult. Even if we convince Carpatescu to turn away from his destiny, there is still Satan to consider. He could just use Leon or some other schmuck as a host and keep the ball rolling.
>>
>>3713799
Still we will have a man who can mass mind control with his voice on our side. Thats pretty powerful. Also his knowledge of satans plans.
>>
Given that Satan's essentially a massive tool (as demonstrated in the last campaign) his plan is basically act like the Heel, get people to take the Mark of the Beast, then get beat at Armageddon.

Also to consider, if we eliminate Carpatescu now, he's not the only one with the ability to control the Narrative. There are still the Witnesses at the wailing wall who can smite people with fire and call upon plagues. Like them, Carpatescu is likely just another pawn in this Apocalyptic charade.
>>
>>3713799
We've repeatedly been told that we can put our own puppet subpotentates in place.
>>
I'm hoping to resume this Saturday when we're done with crunch time, my apologies. Thanks for the theorycrafting! :D
>>
Hope to see you then, Geist
