One day when you were four your babysitter started freaking out when she couldn't find you. She was calling people and crying. You were horribly confused as you were only two feet away watching the Adventures of the Golden Patriot on TV. She was certainly less amused when she could hear you calling to her from seemingly nowhere trying to get her attention. You only realized something was amiss when you tripped and fell right through the cou trying to calm her down. Later however you were excited. You were super-abled, a miracle since as far as you were aware neither of your parents carried the Apex gene. You knew from then on that you had to be a cape. You were so certain even as a little...

And now you get to make a new name for yourself. It begins tonight.

A few white 4 door hover movers come in under the veil of darkness and park round the back. A few cyber crusts come out from the warehouse gate armed with chains and lead pipes and meet up with the movers. They open the trunks and from your position you can see that there are enough cold caches to equal at least a good fifty thousand creds.

An armed guard carrying a Tamaka Enforcer rifle steps out of one of the movers and begins to escort one of the crusts as he begins to carry a cold cache to the gates. The other stays behind as another armed guard steps out and joins him. They will probably need to make, you estimate, three trips back and forth to get it all in.

Its go time.

Descending the building via the fire escape you invisibo your way behind the armed guard by the truck. You sneak behind and to the right facing toward the crust and punch him. You ding him pretty good and the shock knocks him down for a moment and his TE rifle drops and slides a foot away from the open mover.

The crust is shocked and looks around weilding his pipe menacingly as his head swivels from side to side trying to find the source of his troubles.

"Who goes there. You fucking slaggers!!! The hell do you think you are!"

Ooooooooh yeah! Here it is. The moment. The chance for a cool name drop. You sneak behind and drop your invisibility and prepare to punch his lights out as you say...

>"Im (ENTER CAPE NAME)." and take him down.
>>
>>3713558
Please god no. I never thought I'd say this but. I can stand a Nazi and a liberal, but I can't stand a liberal Nazi.

Nazi Hero: Talks about how it is their duty as a master of the superior race to look after their lessers.

"I'm Specter Streak." He turns around, pipe already in an arc towards you. But you drop him with a quick but firm left hook upside his skull and he falls like a sack of potatoes. Sadly his pipe falling from his now limp hand hits the concrete and alerts the guard and the crust coming back for thier second cache. On the ground a little bit away from the KOed crust the other guard begins to stir and rise.

What do you do?

With a swift kick to the side the guard stays down.

"Oi!!!!"

You turn around and see the crust with his chain spinning like a propeller and in front of him is the guard. He starts blasting you with pulse rounds on sight. You won't be able to dodge in time, you'll need to phase.

Roll a 1d10 RESTRAINT

(Whenever you use your powers in moments of high stress its harder to control them. Whether your're trying to reduce collateral damage or avoid killing someone with superstrength you need to show a little RESTRAINT. 5-6 are the sweet spot. 1 is barely a fizzle, your powers don't activate. 10 is overkill. The other numbers inbetween are varying degrees of mixed successes.)

(First roll posted is used when making RESTRAINT rolls.)

Oh fuck.
>>

You manage to let a few rounds slip through you but you flicker for just a moment and one of them hits you squre in the sternum. The blue bolt stings as it strikes your chest. Its a searing hot pain and will likely bruise and scar but luckily he's using pulse rounds so you don't need to worry about removing a round from your lung.

"Get down and stay down. Resistence is futile!"

Screams the synthesized voice of the guard. Must be tin man.

As he approaches you can see inside the warehouse from this angle. There on a table is the first cache opened up where punks in lab goggles are counting the preprepped syringes.

The tin man guard is close enough to where you can see the neon glow of his optics behind his visor. Hes close enough that if he sprayed again going invisible won't matter and you don't have enough time to phase again.

Roll a 1d20 to perform a take down.

You let the chain phase clean through you like a knife through air. You make a smug face before you notice your shrinking. Shit! You aren't shrinking you're sinking. You got over excited and have sunk 2 feet into the concrete and dirt. As you notice yourself no-clipping through the ground you panic and flicker. Surprisingly you aren't bisected like you always feared and are instead ejected upward violently from the ground as the greater mass of the earth sends you tumbling 4 feet into the air.

Time feels slow for you as you see the shocked face of the crust a looking up in astonishment. His chain hanging limp by his side. You need to really pull yourself together and make this landing or you are going to find yourself in a very vulnerable position.

All of a sudden you feel your stomach drop as your land square on your left arm. You hear an unhealthy but crunchy *SNAP* as you dislocate your fore arm from your elbow. HOLY. SHIT. This hurts worse than the shot to the chest.

"You stupid cunt!"

You tilt your head up for a second just as the chain comes crashing onto your face and strikes your across the face over your right eye. You feel a warm wetness coming down your right cheek as darkness begins to overtake your vision.
As you see the silhouette of the crust raise his chain for a final blow a loud *WOOOOOM* and a rush of air knock the crust down as another form takes his place. The shadow reaches down towars you as you pass out.

You wake up in a hospital bed with a patch over your right eye and your left arm in a sling wearing a patients gown. You look around and take in the sterile room. To your right by a hospital nightstand is your cellphone, a call remote to call a nurse, and your wallet, containing your cape ID and your Metro City citizen card, which is sitting a top your folded cape costume.

"Like abosolute shit... How long have I been out."

Your voice comes out a little gravely.

The nurse keeps checking the machines as she replies.

"You have been asleep for 2 days."

You sit up a bit more in your bed and wince at the pain in your chest. You can feel the bruise from the pulse round and its harsh.

You cough a bit to clear your voice up a bit.

"What happened?"

She looks at you a bit unamused.

"Well if what Sonic Strike told me was true when the police had everything wrapped up at the warehouse and checked all the nearby cctv it looks like you, a cape that just got her liscence a few days ago, attempted to bust a pretty decent shipment of nitro, ALONE I might add, and went up against four armed criminals, half of which had energy weapons, and ended getting herself beat up after your powers malfunctioned. Honestly if the Crusaders didn't plan on also being at that drop off you would have been killed."

You feel very, very lucky and grossly embarrased.

She sighs and looks down. She goes over to a nearby desk and pulls the chair from under it and over by your bedside. She sits down and looks you in the eye.

"This isn't gonna be easy to accept. I'm sorry. We really did do all we could. But the nature of the damage was very excessive. You kept entering incorporeality during the early stages of treatment before we could manage to properly sedate you. There were so many other complications. Your eye was damaged beyond repair. The nature of your power also makes it so that cybernetic replacement isn't an option as modern medicine hasn't found ways to make them work with the phasing ability.
You will never have full depth perception ever again."

You feel.... miserable. You reach up and touch the patch over your wounded socket and press lightly. There is no resistance. It's gone.

It all seemed so simple when you were little. The bad guys lost and the good guys win. Justice prevails and no one gets hurt. But thats just cartoons, comics, cape serialized series meant to sell knick nacks and chotchkys. Last night was real. This pain is real. Your eye was real too. You worry that you really aren't ready to be a hero like you thought you would.

You look at the nurse.

"Thank you for taking care of me."

She actually seems to smile at that.

"Just doing our job miss. Someones gotta make sure you capes don't die punching alien invaders and stoping wayward asteroids."

She stands up from her chair and heads to a nearby sink. She gets you a small paper cup full of water and hands it over. As you sip from it she says,

"Now I know you just woke up but there is someone outside who wants to see you. If you want i can send them away for later but they would really like to talk to you about what happened a few nights ago."

You ask her to send them away. You just want to rest and recover right now.

"I'll let him know. Get some sleep."

She steps out into the hall and you can kinda hear her talking with a bassy voice through the door. You lay back down into your bed and let sleep overtake you.

TWO WEEKS LATER.

You are at your dinky studio apartment. You've been out of the apartment for a few days and finally feel ready enough to get back to the heroics. The pulse round left a very noticeable cross scar on your chest and there is also a vertical scar across your right socket that goes all the way down your cheek. The leather eye patch you got as a get well gift from your mom when she came to visit is doing a pretty good job of keeping your ruined eye from scaring people. Your arm is perfectly healed though... like it was never busted.

When you checked the mailbox on the way in you found a note from your landlord. He's been pretty forgiving considering the injuries but now that you're back he expects the rent for this month on time. You've got about a week to collect the 1,500 creds needed.

Normally the Superhero Initiative Registry will pay you for taking part in daily patrols, solving cases for concerned citizens, or after assissting in major crisises and natural disasters. But since you haven't been working for the past two weeks you aren't exactly flush with cash. Then again there is... the CARD.

The nurse gave it to you after you checkes out. The guy who came to visit left it and recommended you get in contact as soon as possible. Its got a Stylized letter S on the front and on the back it simply has a phone number. You know very well whose it is though. You'd know Sonic Strikes logo anywhere.

What do you do?

You can't see it but you imagine him flexing everytime he raises his voice.

"I'd like you to come to my auxilary office at the SIR building downtown. I have a proposition for you I think you'd like to hear. I'll be hear all day. Just let the girl at the front desk know who you are and she'll send you up. Goodbye."

You hop on bus donning your hero outfit since you haven't really had a chance to do any laundry since you've been back. At least they can pass for edgy street clothes in a pinch. You look at the city through the windows of the hovering vehicle. You don't appreciate enough but this city really is amazing. During the night when crime is bad its easy to dunk on Metro City. But in the day you can see it for what it is, a living breathing place full of people. Magnetrains and hovercars and just all these people. Each one with a story or a dream and they all have so much potential. It really is beautiful here.

After the wistful moment you realize you've made it to your stop. You look up as you step off the bus at the monolithic skyscraper that houses the SIR. You make your way inside the building and make your way to the service desk. At the desk is a bespecticled office worker tapping away at a plethora of holo screens. He's abosutely swamped with work. He looks to you for a second and looks back to his screens. You blink and in that moment there are two of him. He walks from behind the desk and greets you very pleasantly.

"Hello. How may I help you today?"

You let him know that you're Specter Streak. You have an appointment.

"Ah yessssss. I remember now. Give me your hand."

You always hate this part. You take his hand and in an instant you are at Sonic Strike's office on the 35th floor. You feel uneasy and kind of sick.

"He's expecting you. Just walk right in."

You take a deep breath and enter his office.

You can't see him anywhere 'till you notice the slow rise and fall of his desk. You lower your gaze and see he is bench pressing it.

"AH!!!!! Young hero!!! HRRRRGH!!!! Get on the desk I could use some more weight!"

"Sure why not."

You walk over and hop onto the desk you cross your legs and get comfortable as he goes back to his benches.

"So is this the only reason you called me here or....."

He pauses.

"No."

He continues his lifting.

"I called you hear because I wanted to talk to you about your future as a hero. That night I saved you I had to go over the cctv footage with the police. You weren't doing to bad actually. You're just kinda green. So here's what Im want to do i want to take away this."

He's holding your solo license. When did he ...

"And give you this instead."

He hands you a provisional team license. He puts the desk down and kneels so he's at eye level with you.

"I think you have a lot of potential Specter. I just don't think you have the experience to be out there by yourself right now. I want you to find at least two other team members and work as a cape team until you feel you have the experience to go out a work as a solo. You don't have to say yes. If you want I can crush and invalidate that prov license and give you back your solo one right now."

All of a sudden a million worries pass through your head. Maybe you aren't as you thought you were. If he really wanted to he could have just revoked your lisence entirely.

>>3716475

"Hmmmm. YES!!! HUZZAH!!!! You'll see young Specter! This is the start of a very promising career."

He brings a chair from over by the window and sits back down at his desk like a normal person should.

"I know you have a promising future ahead of you. If you go out into the hall. The Duplicate will take you to where you want to go just ask. I expect big things from you. Call me again should you ever need advice."

You exit the office and a 3 feet from the door is The Duplicate. The bespecticled assistant who brought you up here a moment ago.

"Where can I take you?"

If you want to get back to work you need to find two team members stat. You better start your search today.

"Flex Grips please."

He takes your hand and in an instant you're there. Jesus this sucks. You puke a little in your mouth. Fuck teleporting seriously. The worst of the mobility suite.
You'd take flying or super speed anyday.

Just as he drops of you off he's gone in the same instant. You turn to get a better look at the building. Its a simple 3 story buidling near Starlight Park with a glowing sign neon sign in an intense font that reads "FLEX GRIPS!".

You step inside and to your left near the counter you see a simple community game room. A foosball table, a ping pong table, a Galacticon arcade cabinet, 2 vending machines, a water fountain, and a couple of sets of rounded tables and chairs. At the back wall of this rumpus area is a holographic wall tablet covered in different pieces of data.

There are a couple of sidekicks playing ping pong and there is a very upset looking cape shaking a vending machine. He is wearing a domino mask and a bandana .His is draped in a desperado pancho. Under his poncho is a leather vest and a wrinkled white button up. He is wearing sturdy jeans and leather chaps and modified spurred cowboy boots. It looks like there are little chambers where the spurs should be and a strange black and neon revolver on his hip.

To the right is the is the entrance to the gym.

You aren't entirely broke. You have at least 10CDs to your name. You go to the machine next to the cowboy and and look at the options. A plethora of finger foods to choose from but you are distracted by the cowboy.

"Consarnit!!! C'mere you varmint!!!

From this angle up close you can see the source of his frustation. A bag of beef jerky thats wedged between the plexiglass and the stock part of the machine. The most cruel of fates.

>>3717089

You can't bare to see his struggle. You to have been the victim of the treachery of vending machines.

"Step back I got this."

He turns to you, confused for only a second, as you phase your hand through the glass and flick the beef jerky with your finger and watch as it clatters to the bottom. While you can't use your phasing to pull objects out from blocked spaces you can control what parts of your body are incorporeal at any given time to manipulate things through physical barriers. It takes a bit more finesse but in a low stakes environment you can do it pretty easily.

You phase shift your hand to be incorporeal once more and pull it back out.

He takes his jerky and even though you can't see his eyes behind the white material of his domino mask you can FEEL the sparkle in his eyes.

"Well butter my biscuit! Thanks pardner. I was just about to turn this here thing into swiss cheese in a second. You just gone and saved me a lot of grief."

He holds out a hand for a shake. You realize something you hadn't noticed before. His arms and hands... they're cybernetic. The lights of the gameroom reflect of his chrome hand.

"Names Sixer, and who is it that I have the pleasure of speaking to?"

"Hmmm. Show me what you can do first."

You can't see it from under his bandanna but you are CERTAIN he is grinning wildly.

"I was hopin' you'd ask that lil'miss. Follow me."

He leads you to the back of the building to a secure room with different booths that face over toward a titanium lined firing range.

He pulls out his strange revolver and loads in a cricled band of six large shells into the cylinder. He pushes a button on the booth and a few targets come out from the ground and ceiling from slots you can barely percieve.

He spins the cylinder.

"Don't blink or you'll miss it."

He takes a stance and fires all six rounds in the span of a few seconds. He flings open his revolvers cylinder and tosses up in the air a new band of shells, catching and loading them with the open cylinder and with a flick of the wrist continues to fire wildly. You can see flashes of light spark across the walls and floor as the bullets ricochet. Then he holsters his gun and makes finger guns with his hands. His pointer and middle fingers locking together with a sliding mechanism and barrels forming at the tips. Beams of blue light begin to stream from the tips and slice through the paper targets.

When he's finished he waves for you to follow him and look at the targets. They are all in chopped half but oddly enough not a single one has a bullet hole.

"Ummmm... Hey Sixer that was cool and all but you missed all your shots."

He pulls down his bandana to reveal a scarred upper lip and a bottom jaw made of polished steel.

"Did I?"

He points to the back wall. As your gaze follows his finger you see, written in bullet marks and wedged tips, the number 6.

He walks over.

"Soooooooooo... You thinkin' bout sayin' yes?"

As you walk to the gym you remember you still need a team name. Luckily since you already have a team license, even though its just provisional, you can register your team and it's name on the app once you have all your team members. You'll need to enter their ID numbers as well so you can worry about that once you got everyone together.

As you make it to the gym you notice a few interesting characters. In a wind tunnel chamber in the back you see an ani-powered bird man flap his wings and soar against the breeze while carrying lead weights in his clawed taloned feet. He swoops to set them down as the fan creating the strong breeze winds down. He exits the chamber and takes a seat on a nearby bench. He pulls a water bottle out of his bag and shoots water from the bottle into his beak. Not having lips must suck.

On an extreme parkour track in the corner, near the rock wall, is a thin athletic woman who is doing varying flips and grabs and scaling the walls of the course in a sharp circuit. On one of the swing bars she loses her grip and just as she is about to fall on the padded floor her other shoots forward and stretchs and wraps around bar. Placing her other arm on the streched one she reels her self toward the bar rapidly and leaps it with the built momentum and returns her arm to normal.

On the powerlifter, testing his upper limit, is a large tin man. His red cyclopean gaze fixated on its task fully. His body looks like it was quite literally designed to throw and smash. The proportions are almost cartoonishly gorilla like. His arms and chest, large and threataning, while his legs and lower body seem comically average by comparison. His head bops perfectly in rhythm to the boombox next to him.

You take a second and make a decision. You go beside him and start lifting weights in tandem. You aren't a wimp but if you've learned anything over the past two weeks, it's to not bite off more than you can chew. You start with a 100 pounds dead lifting. You do a few and as you start the fifth...

"WR0NG."

You turn to face the tin man. He is sitting up in the machine and facing you. His synthesizer sounds old. He's clearly an uprising era model.

"I'm sorry wha-"

"Y0U'R3 ST4NC3 1S B4D. W1LL HURT Y0UR S3LF."

He gets up and with a foot pushes your feet wider apart.

"TH3R3. Y0UR C3NT3R 0F GR4V1TY 1S L0W3R. M0R3 3FF1C13NT."

"MY N4M3 1S F0R3M4N."

In perfect sync. You and Sixer ask...

"Will you please join our team?
"Would you be willin' to train us pardner?"

He is inherently un expressive but he seems intrigued. He puffs out his chest and crosses his trunklike arms.

"SUR3. I H4V3 B33N 4W4Y FR0M MY W0RK F0R T00 L0NG."

Excited, you and Sixer high five. *CLING*
OW! Fuck. Metal on skin.... not smart. You decide to forge your friendship by being cheeky. You approach the large tin man.

"WHY D0 Y0U SP34K L1K3 TH1S?"

Doing your best to imitate his clunky, staticy voice.

He looms over you menacingly. Fuck maybe it wasn't as funny as you thought. He reaches towards you with his massive hand. He pats you gently on the head.

"H4 H4 H4. PR3TTY G00D. D0N'T B3 4L4RM3D. 1 G3T TH4T 4LL TH3 T1M3. 1 4M 0LD3R TH4N M0ST 0TH3R UN1TS."

You exchange names and begin to talk a little when Sixer speaks up.

"Pardon my interuption y'all but I am getting a mighty fine urge to do some celebrating. We just formed what may one day be the greatest team in this here city. Let's go y'all drinks are on me! Where y'all wanna go?"

F0REM4N scratches his jutting chin. Sparks fly.

"1 KN0W 4 PL4C3 W1TH G00D MUS1C 4ND DR1NK STR0NG 3N0UGH T0 STR1P P41NT."

Sixer giggles a little.

"Sounds good new buddy. I also know of a little honky tonk south ah here that's got the hottiest tottiest waitresses this side of the raydon canyon."

You've only ever been to the Star Spangled. What can you say, the Golden Patriot was your favorite hero. Hard not to like a bar themed after the guy.

Sixer looks to you.

"Well Specter, I reckon you should choose. Seein' as you brought all us folk together in the span of an hour. What'll it be?"

You think about it but tonight is special and you can't beat a classic.

"Let's just head down to The Star Spangled. Can never go wrong with that place."

Sixer and F0R3M4N turn to each other and then turn to you and ask in unison...

"Do they got pretty ladies?"
"D0ES TH1S 3ST4BL1SHM3NT H4V3 4 JUK3B0X?"

You blink.

"Uhhhh.... yeeeeeeeeeesss?"

They turn back to each other and nod in manly agreement.

"L3T US 'R0LL 0UT'"
"Let's skedaddle."

So a short bus ride later you find yourselves at a round corner booth in the Star Spangled. A nice jazzy song, paid for and selected by F0R3M4N, playing from the antique jukebox.

You are nursing a frothy beer while Sixer waits for his tumbler of whiskey. F0R3M4N on the other hand asked for a glass of their strongest rubbing alcohol. They couldn't legally serve him that, even though he's a tin man, so instead he ended up with a large glass filled to the brim with grain vodka.

F0R3M4N clears his.... throat? You aren't exactly an expert on tin man anatomy.

"S0... SP3CTER, Y0U KN0W WHY 1 CH0S3 TH3 L1F3 0F 4 C4P3D CRUS4D3R. WH4T 4B0UT Y0U. WHY CH00S3 SUCH 4 D4NG3R0US C4R33R?"

Sixer leans forward and rests his hand on his metal chin, his bandanna tied around his neck like a kerchif.

"Yeah. I was a mite curious m'self. If'in you don't mind my askin'?"

>Let's not talk about me, i'm boring. What about you Sixer. What got you into the cape biz?

Just as they say this a waiter and a waitress come to the table. The waitress hands Sixer his whiskey and the waiter sets down a small bowl of beer nuts on the table.

You whisper to yourself. Conversation at the table stops. You slowly turn your head back toward the group. Three eyes are locked on you. Shit! You said that out loud.

"Uhhhhhh... I mean he didn't stare at my eyepatch. Hard to not find rude people these days..."

They both look at you like you are full of shit.

"Whatever pardner, but for the record, I ain't judgin' nobody fer lookin'. Lookin's always free."

You blush and they both have a chuckle at your expense. Like good friends always do.

He orders every one another round of drinks and as soon as everyone has a drink in their hands he raises his glass.

As you all talk you get a little curious about the strange cyber-cowboy and you and F0R3M4N ask about who such a humble country man ended up here in Metro City.

Now Sixer is beaming from ear to ear. He's had quite a few drinks already and cyborg physiology or not he is very clearly hosed.

"Now I knew one o' y'all would be askin' sooner er later. Now listen up cause I plan on only tellin' this tale once. Well long ago, and far west past the mutant inhabitated Raydon Canyon, was the humble thorium minin' town of Blue Creek Run. That town was full of kind folks but you would still get the occasional bar fight or raider caravan tryin' to take their hard earned thorium, so it still needed a sheriff. That sheriff's name was... well I don't rightly remember. Anyways one day this sheriff got into a stand off with the 4 Armed Kid, the meanest, rootin' tootinest, sum' bitch mutant this side of the canyon. Though the sheriff did his darndest he ended up going down, and losing a lot of himself in the process. That no good mutant left what was left of the sheriff for dead in the middle of nowhere. Just when all hope seemed lost a strange man with glowing red eyes came and scooped him up. Sometime later the sheriff woke up to find himself on a metal slab, whole once again, with note on his chest and some holes in his noggin. The note said simply, 'Patient no.6, you will be my last.' Confused and alone the sheriff tried his hardest to find his way to his barely remembered home, but when he got there...."

He looks down into his glass, the brown liquid a swirling mirror.

"There was only dust.... So the patchwork sheriff wandered from town to town helping folks, being as that was all he could remember doin'. When people asked him for a name, grateful and wantin' a name to thank, all he could tell them was 'Patient no.6'. So the people gave the wanderin' sheriff a new name. Sixer. Eventually he made his way to Metro City, a place always in need of help, and settled down. Leaving my... HIS... forgotten past behind him."

Holy shit... maybe you should stop asking people about their origin stories... a lot of bummers to be had.

Sixer starts chuckling.

"But now I guess that sheriff ain't really alone anymore is he?"

"Y3S. Y0U W1LL 4LW4YS H4V3 4 H0M3 H3R3 1N M3TR0 C1TY.... P4RTN3R."

"What about the 4 Armed Kid? Did you ever see him again?"

He squeezes his glass.... you're worried he's going to break it.

"Never could get a trail on 'im.... but I reckon if'in I evere saw him again.... "

You can see a deep blue light come out from some of the vents in his arms... it looks dangerous. But he waves his hand dismissively and the light stops.

"But it ain't like he's just gonna turn up in a big city with as many capes as this one. Besides... the past is in the past... I'm just tryin' to make it to tomorrow."

Sixer stands up and walks out from the booth.

"Welp... it's been fun y'all but I gotta be hittin' that ol' dusty trail. I'll go pay up our tab then imma go hit the sack."

You figure it's getting pretty late and decide you should head home yourself. You let out a yawn.

"Yeah... I'm getting pretty tired my self.... what about you F0R3M4N?"

He rises and the table shakes a little.

"4FF1RM4T1V3. 1T'S B3ST W3 H34D H0M3. 1 W1LL C4LL US 4 C4B. TH3 C0ST 0F TR4NSP0RT410N 1S 0N M3."

As you all pay and make your way out you wait with F0R3M4N at the payphone. As you wait you hear, in a barely held whisper from the table near the front.

"Finally... I was wondering when that fucking ROBOT would leave. Making the place smell like exhaust."

You and Sixer turn and see a few young street toughs in beat up leather jackets. As they notice you looking, one of them speaks up.

"You got a problem doll?"

You begin to walk over but you feel a heavy hand fall on your shoulder. It's F0R3M4N. He shakes his head.

"F0RG3T 1T. L1K3 1 S41D... 1 H4V3 H34RD W0RS3."

Sixer balls up a fist. He is pretty sloshed. It'll be hard to stop him if he really gets into it.

You walk over to the plexiglass box. You sit criss cross on the ground in front of the box and focus on becoming incorporeal. You then place your forearms into the box and phaseshift your hands up to their wrists so you can manipulate the cube inside without triggering the noclipping effect from two weeks ago.

As you lift the cube your hands flicker and as the cube slips into your hands at the moment of the flicker you expect pain but instead the noclip effect that happened to you two weeks ago happens not to you but to the cube as it is propelled away from your hands and toward the back wall of the box, shattering into pieces. It seems that the effect applies to the object with a smaller mass... you wonder if this could be useful somehow. You put your thoughts aside and open the box to see if you can repair the cube. It looks like the main part is damaged and cracked so you won't be doing this training for awhile.

You decide that, with training over early, you should get to bed and meet up with the team at Flex Grips tomorrow. You close your eyes and fall into a fitful sleep...

You are falling. The wind feels sharp against your skin as you plummet toward the concrete street below. The lights of the city blind your eye as they seem to stretch with the speed of your fall.

The other numbers inbetween are varying degrees of mixed successes.)

You close your eye. You take in a deep breath... the wind doesn't feel like a barrier anymore. It's holding you. Guiding you. You let the breath go... and you phase.

You dive right through the concrete. You pass by miles of dirt and silt and years of sediment and fossils and just layers of time and change as you dive. You pass through and are a layer above the earths crust and then... when the time is right you flicker.

Then as fast as you fell you are rising. You erupt from the earth and soar past the buildings. Past the buildings and the lights of the city and even pierce the sky itself as your become unbound from the earth. You look down at the world before you. Then you shift your gaze towards the heavens. It is beautiful. The lights of the distant stars bathing you in warmth. You feel... transcendant....

And then you wake up.

After getting dressed and eating your breakfast(a small protein bar), you met up with your teammates at Flex Grips. You don't know why but that dream last night has you feeling pumped. Like you can take on the world.

(You've gained a RESTRAINT reroll. After rolling RESTRAINT I will ask if you would like to spend your reroll. If majority says yes then I will roll the second RESTRAINT. However if the new roll is worse than the first you still must use the newer roll.)

You don't really have any real work out or athletic wear so you just brought a hoodie and gym shorts in a bag. After getting changed in the back you see F0R3M4N and Sixer doing endurance training. Sixer is on a treadmill with lead leg weights tied to his ankles, F0REM4N beside him timing him as he approaches a certain distance being measured by the machine.

"Now *pant* why can't I... *wheeze*... start with my upper body again *pant* pardner?"

F0R3M4N clicks mechanically and folds his arms dissaprovingly, shaking his head at the cowboy.

"1T W0ULD N0T B3 4 G00D US3 0F T1M3. M0ST 0F Y0UR UPP3R B0DY 1S SYNTH3T1C. Y0UR L3GS 0N TH3 0TH3R H4ND 4R3 V3RY 0RG4N1C. 4 TRU3 4THL3T3 N3V3R SK1PS C4RD10."

As you approach Sixer sees you and waves.

"Howdy there Specter! *pant* was wonderin' where you was."

F0REM4N unfolds his arms and turns to face you.

"G00D. Y0U 4R3 H3R3. N0W W3 C4N ST4RT 0N Y0UR SP3C14L1Z3D R3G1M3MT."

You look past him and back at the straining Sixer. You feel concerned.

He points over his shoulder at the parkour course you saw the other day.

"C0MPL3T3 TH3 C0URS3 W1TH0UT PH4S1NG THR0UGH TH3 BL0CKS 0R THE B4RS."

Fuck... that elastic gymnast made it look astoundingly easy... it doesn't look so easy anymore.

All of a sudden you get this flash of instinct. Using your momentum from leaping you actually grab the bar and let the motion carry you up above the other bars and then dismount, landing on the next bar, and run atop them instead of swinging from bar to bar. You reach the final bar in the sequence and dismount by performing a forward flip onto the half wall block below and continue to run the course.

F0R3M4N's arms fall to his side in shock. Sixer, stunned by the display, slips and tumbles off the treadmill.

After F0R3M4N gets Sixer resituated you run the course a few more times, and while the other runs don't live up to how smooth your first one was, you feel confident enough in your abilities to try this out on the job.

You walk back up to F0R3M4N and Sixer.

"So... How did I do?"

F0R3M4N pats you on the shoulder.

"Y0U 3XC33D3D MY 3XP3CT410NS SP3CT3R."
"Yeah amigo. I didn't know you were a god damn olympian."

You blush a little. You honestly never performed this well before. F0R3M4N throws you a towel and you catch it swiftly.

"W3LL. 1 TH1NK W3 4R3 R34DY F0R 0UR F1RST 0FF1C14L 0UT1NG 4S 4 T34M."

Sixer whistles.

"Well I'll be damned. I'm sure excited for a day of high falutin' heroics but what should we go and do? Our first adventure as the Silver Stars should be legendary."

You think about it for a sec and go through your options mentally.

You pull up the case data and turn your phone to show your teammates.

"What about this one?"

F0R3M4N scans over the screen while Sixer tries to look past the bulk of the tin man to see the screen.

"4 G00D CH01C3. 4 V3RY N0BL3 C4US3 4S W3LL."

Sixer looks over at the phone and then walks toward the back to change into his uniform.

"Sounds good! Let's go!"

F0R3M4N follows close behind. Now you are a bit curious. Tin men don't need to really wear clothes, seeing as they have no visible naughty bits. You wonder what F0R3M4N's outfit could be then.

"W3 H4V3 R3TURN3D."

You turn around, excited to see what the old tin man's taste in fashion is and.... cargo pants. Just a pair of green cargo pants and a leather utility belt with two large pouchs at the sides and a sturdy metal buckle. You aren't sure what you were even expecting. Sixer steps out from behind and is in his full desperado garb, bandanna covering the lower half of his face.

"Let's go meet up with our concerned citizen. Where we going?"

You look down at the phone.

"Ummm... apartment number 270 at the corner of Main and Hurtz."

Sixer then loudly yeehaws and sprints out the door. You see through the glass of the door as he taps his cred card on to a paycycle and hops on. He revs it and blasts off toward the destination.

"SEE YA THERE PARDNERS!"

F0R3M4N looks concerned.

"H3 C4NN0T B3 4LL0W3D T0 M4K3 4 F1RST 1MPR3SS10N L1K3 TH4T. 1 MUST G0."

F0R3M4N briskly jogs out the door and crosses the street and as he's about to reach the front of the building across the street he slams his fist into the ground, bouncing himself off the ground and begins to scale the one story building and starts hoping from roof top to roof top after the overzealous cowboy.

You take a breath and run toward the nearest street lamp and scale it. You hop toward the traffic lights and run along the top of the post and leap toward the building F0R3M4N scaled a few minutes ago. You tuck and roll onto the roof of the building and pop up into a brisk jog.

You can see F0REM4N's silhouette a little further away in the distance. You take a running leap to the next rooftop over the chasm of the alley below. Your exercises today giving you more awareness of your environment.

Once again your instincts take hold and you leap clean over the alley and land cleanly upright on the other side. As you keep running you find your movement impeded by an advertisement screen. You pick and speed and phase through it and tuck and roll onto the lower ledge of the next building. In the distance you csn see Sixer at the corner by a manhole cover waving to F0R3M4N who is only a few buildings ahead of you now. You can easily catch up now. You hop down and slide off the wall into the alley below and phase through the concrete and into the sewer tunnel finding your feet on the walkway by the stream and run to where the stream meets the cover. Finding the ladder you climb up and push the lid off and away and pull yourself out of the underneath.

Sixer looks down at you confused.

"What? Second place isn't that bad is it?"

You stand up and wipe the roof dust off your knees. You turn look back to the roof tops and see F0R3M4N leaping to the pavement below, making a three point landing.

He then stands up and waits at the cross walk for the light to change before calmly crossing the street. He looks down at Sixer.

"PL34S3. N3V3R D0 TH4T 4G4IN."

Sixer scratches his nose.

"Now what'd be the fun in that. C'mon! Heroism awaits."

He walks over to the door and wrings the buzzer on the comms. A reserved, polite voice answers.

You walk up next to Sixer.

"We're the Silver Stars. We're here about your missing persons case."

A brief crackle of static comes over the comms.

"Come on in."

The comms lets out a loud buzz as a the door clicks open.

You walk in and up a few flights of stairs (you couldn't all fit in the elevator) and to apt 270. As you approach you see the door is open a crack. A voice calls from inside.

"Please come in! The door should be open."

As you walk in the first thing you notice is that the walls are completely covered in bookshelves. Loose papers and file boxes cover the floor and a dinner table is situated in the middle with a steaming teapot on a hot plate and a few ceramic cups surrounding.

A figure steps out from a back room. Its a tall lanky man. His hair is a wild mess of fluffy brown hair. His eyes are obscured by large round opaque glasses. His chin is adorned with stubble. He is carrying a few file boxes.

He motions at the table.

"Please sit. I'll be done in just a moment.
If you would like some tea feel free to help yourself."

You all find seats at the table. F0R3M4N helping himself to a small cup of tea.

The lanky man swings back around and sits down.

"I'm sorry for the mess... my work has been quite hectic without my assistant. My name is Dr. Albert Tyson. I arranged the case with SIR because my research assitant, Sloane, has gone missing."

You lean forward and lay an arm on the table casually.

"How long has she been missing?"

He takes off his glasses and cleans them on his black turtleneck. His eyes are sky blue. He answers as he cleans the spectacles.

"She's been missing for three days. On the first day I just assumed she needed a personal day and sent her an email saying not to worry about work that day. Then on the second day her wife, Emily, called me to see if she stayed the night at work. When I told her she hadn't I got worried and I told her I would file a report with the police and that she should too. Then another day passed with no results and that's when I asked the police to register the case with SIR, due to the serious nature of our work here."

He puts his glasses back on and looks across the table at all of you. He is clearly upset.

F0R3M4N takes a lengthy sip of tea and turns to the doctor.

"WH4T 3X4CTLY 1S TH3 N4TUR3 0F Y0UR W0RK H3R3 D0CT0R?"

He sighs.

"We studied the stimulant Nitro, with grants and permission from the Metro City Food and Drug Administration. We studied it's chemical make up and its effects on people lacking or with dormant Apex genes. We hypothesized that with measured and scheduled doses you could force a dormant Apex gene to activate in unactivated individuals. We only hypothesized because we have not been cleared for human testing yet. The data also suggests that in very high doses that it could greatly increase the reflexes and physical accuity of people lacking the gene."

Sixer scratches his head trying to process the information.

"Are y'all tryin' ta tell me that some back alley chemists made the worlds best performance enhancer and didn't even know it?"

Dr.Tyson nods solemnly.

"In laymans terms."

You start putting it together.

"You think that someone may have caught on and grabbed Sloane so she could apply your theories and see if they could make a buck selling super steroids."

He looks down and puts his head in his hands. He groans and continues your thought.

"If that is indeed what has happened then she is in more danger than we already thought. She isn't an actual chemist I am. She only knows the theory. Whatever they end up creating may as well be poison... and when they realize she can't give them what they want..."

He goes quiet.

You give Dr.Tyson a moment to collect himself before continuing with your questioning.

"Who else knows about your research?"

He adjusts his glasses.

"My contact and liason at the MCFDA Dr.Butcher knows quite a bit about my research. Emily knows that we are working with narcotics but nothing beyond that. We've spoken a few times when she visited our workspace here to drop lunch off for Sloane on rare occasion."

Sixer scoots closer to the table and leans in to be closer to the conversation.

>>3725399

"Did she go and mention anythin' funny last time you saw her?"

The doctor shakes his head.

"No. She certainly seemed fine. It was just another day at the office."

He gets up and finds a piece of paper and a pen. He jots down the address and hands it to you. It's about two blocks south from here.

He ruffles his hair nervously and looks down worriedly.

He smiles. The light of the room reflecting off his glasses.

"I'm certain that you lot can find Sloane and bring her back. I have the utmost faith in you."

After exchanging a few more words
you and the other members of your team are back on the street corner in front of the apartment building.

Sixer turns to face you and F0REM4N.

"I'm gonna head over to the Neon district. I know a few folks there that keep their ears pretty darn low to the ground. I'll give y'all a call if I find anything interestin'"

He hops back on the paycycle and goes off toward the eastern part of the city.

"Let's go talk to Emily. Maybe she can give us more information on Sloane."

F0R3M4N nods and you two walk south until you reach a small two story house with flower beds in front. A walkway connects the pavement to the porch and is linked by a concrete ramp.

You and F0R3M4N walk to the porch and knock on the door. You hear movement from inside as a delicate voice calls out.

"I'm coming! Just a moment."

The door opens inward and inside you see a pale woman with golden blond hair. She is wearing a simple white sundress with a red shawl drapped over her shoulders. She is in a motorized wheel chair, you notice the form of her legs stops just a little before the dress ends. She is clearly missing both her legs below the knees. Her eyes are a strange shade of hazel.

"Hello! Is there something I can help you with?"

You step forward a bit.

"We're with SIR. We wanted to know if we could speak to you about your wife."

F0R3M4N approaches the door.

"W0ULD 1T B3 4LR1GHT 1F W3 C4M3 1N MS...."

She smiles and nods.

"Fürst. Emily Fürst. My wife and I kept our maiden names when we married. Please come in."

F0R3M4N ducks down to squeeze through the doorway and you follow behind. You enter into what appears to be a sitting room. There are tables adornes with vases of varying styles and complexities and on the wall is a large oil painting depicting the green glow and vapor of Raydon Canyon.

She rolls herself in front of a small coffee table and asks you to sit on the couch adjacent.

As you sit she clears her throat.

"I suppose you'd like to know more about my Sloane. Please ask away. If it can help you find her I'll answer anything."

Her hands are crossed in her lap. They are clasped tightly together. She's clearly upset but doesn't want to show it.

Do we really need to know for how long she's been disabled?
>>
To summarize what we know so far.

Days since going missing: 3

Missing person is Sloane, female, unknown age and description. Name indicates British descent. Last known location Metro City, Neon District.

Works as an assistant for Dr. Albert Tyson. Works with him under the supervision of the Metro City Food and Drug Administration studying the effects of the drug Nitro on human beings. Research is overseen through the Dr.Butcher who presumably delivers reports to the MCFDA. Studies show that it may possibly awaken dormant Apex genes in humans possessing it, and boosting the abilities of those who don't.

Married to one Emily Fürst, disabled.

Could be possible motive for her interest in Dr.Albert's research. Enhancer like that, who knows what you could do. Maybe awaken a dormant Apex gene in a lover. Or make a buck selling it off and buy her some topnotch cybernetics. No piece of information is too small.

"How long have you been together?"

She smiles, seemingly at a memory of times passed.

"We met back in college 9 years ago. I was studying mutant history and culture at MCU and she was getting her masters in biochemistry. We met at a party being held by a mutual friend and we just hit it off. We were dating for 2 years before I had my accident..."

She places a hand on the cap of her knee.

"We decided life was too short and got married. We've been together since. After we grauduated I fell into a bad depression and found the arts as a coping mechanism. She worked in various labs and in lots of research groups before finding her calling with Dr.Tyson."

F0R3M4N leans in a bit. The couch creaks with his weight.

"WH4T W4S SH3 L1K3 0UTS1D3 0F W0RK?"

Emily shifts her gaze to F0R3M4N.

"She's.... amazing. If she really wanted to she could have gotten her doctorate years ago. She just enjoys working with others too much to go further. She says it's just as important helping great minds than trying to prove to others you have one. She is very passionate about her work with Albert. She's told me a bit about how it could help so many people. To turn something so vulgar and use it to help people... it's hard to not be proud."

She looks like she's going to cry. You can only imagine how hard this must be for her. You hate this but you have to keep pushing forward.

"What was her routine after work? Did she always come straight home."

Emily wipes away a tear.

"Ummm... sometimes. She felt like we needed some more variety so once every week for the past month she comes home with take out martian food. She says its straight from Little Mars. You know, that burrough by the Neon District."

Yeah you know of it. After Mars cracked in half a few centuries back during the Plutonian invasion the refugees and survivors spread out all over Earth finding new places to settle. Quite a few ended up in a slum here and overtime, with a little hardwork, they turned it into a thriving community famous for its xeno-commodities. Pretty good food too.

She looks like shes at the end of her rope.

"I'm sorry. I know this is a hard time for you but anything could be important. What was the last thing you talked about?"

She sighs deeply and takes a breath. She steels herself for her next answer.

"She said she loved me. She said she and Dr.Tyson had made a huge breakthrough in their work and she couldn't wait to present it to the MCFDA next week. She was practically floating she was so happy. She said she loved me and she kissed me on the cheek... and then she didn't come home."

Emily is crying now. Not sobbing. She is just holding her self and trying to be okay and failing as tears roll down her cheek and fall on the skirt of her dress.

F0R3M4N gets up and walks over to her. From his pocket he pulls out a folded hankerchief and gently hands it to her. She takes it and wipes her tear streaked face.

She hands back the kercheif and smiles at F0R3M4N.

"Thank you. Thank you both so much. Is there anything else I can do to help?"

You give her a few moments to collect herself before you ask your next question. Thank god F0R3M4N is here. He seems to have more experience with these things.

"W4S SH3 4CT1NG PECUL14R 0R 1N 4NY W4Y 4T 4LL UNL1K3 H3RS3LF B3F0R3 H3R D1S4PP34R4NC3?"

Emily shakes her head.

"Not in the slightest. Everything seemed okay. If she was troubled she never let on."

Damn it. Maybe you should try something else.

"Could we see her room? Maybe she left behind a clue."

Emily whispers a thank you to F0R3M4N and then turns her chair to face you.

"Of course. Please follow me. It's upstairs."

You follow her to a stair case leading up to the second floor. Along the banister is an elevating mechanism that Emily attaches her chair to and activates, taking her up smoothly as you follow behind.

She leads you to what is clearly a master bedroom. Its a simple room with a large bed and a couple nightstands along with a dresser. On one of the night stands is a photo of Emily and Sloane. You hadn't seen a picture of the missing person so this is your first time seeing her. She has bobbed black hair and a beauty mark under her right eye. She has dark brown eyes and a tattoo of an eye on her collar bone.

"Over here."

You and F0R3M4N turn and see her open what looks like a walk in closet. Instead of clothes in side are few familiar file boxes and a rather pricey looking computer sitting atop a black desk. It even has holotouch display. Emily gestures into the makeshift office.

"If there is anything important she left it would be in here."

Roll 1d20 to investigate.

After digging through her papers to see if anything stands out you find a half of a page dated a few weeks ago. It looks more like a journal entry than scientific notes.

* God damn it. Another set back. We are running out of raw materials. Gorlox said with the next shipment we should have enough Nitro to finish my experiments. It's astounding really. The things you can do with enough...*

The page ends there. If only you had the other half. You show the torn half to F0R3M4N. He hums with his worn synthesizer.

"SH3 M3NT10NS A 'G0RL0X'. TH4T 1S 4 M4RT14N N4M3. TH3 -0X SUFF1X D3N0T3S TH3 N4M3 4S M4SCUL1N3."

You nod. Well... that's a lead at least.

You exit the office space and outside the door Emily is waiting for you.

"So did you find anything?"

You pause... what should you tell her?

>She was in contact with a martian. It sounds like she was working on something outside of her work with Dr.Tyson.
>Nothing conclusive. But you've been a big help.

Something... something is very clearly up here. You are pretty sure whatever Dr.Tyson has going on with the MCFDA doesn't involve shipments or shady martians. You're no xenophobe but clearly something isn't right with whatever Sloane and that martian are up to. It's probably best to keep her out of the loop for now. No need to make her worry.

"Nothing conclusive, but talking to you has given us a lot to work with. Thank you for your help."

F0R3M4N turns and looks down at you. His single red eye looks into and for a second before he gives you a single nod. It looks like he agrees.

"W3 W1LL S33 0URS3LVES 0UT. TH4NK Y0U F0R Y0UR C00P3R4T10N MS.FÜRST."

You put a hand on Emily's shoulder.

"We will let you know if we find anything else."

She smiles at you. You look into her eyes. There is hope in them... you begin to worry. You better not let her down.

A short moment later you find yourself back on the street with F0R3M4N.

F0R3M4N turns to you about to speak when your phone rings. It's Sixer.

"Howdy y'all. I just got done with my little venture out here. I think I know who we can talk to about our missin' researcher. How bou't y'all. You two find anythin' out while I was gone."

You give him the low down on what you learned from Emily and the torn page.

"Hmmmm... Sounds mighty suspicious. Well... what do you wanna do?"

Either sixer heard rumors of a new drug production site, or seen shipments and personnel moving around. With two leads it can help lower the search area to find the the Doctor.

You think it'd be best to meet up and see what Sixer found whil he was away. You reply to Sixer.

"We're on our way. Where should we meet
you?"

"Do y'all know about Rioletti's?"

F0REM4N nods.

"Y3S. TH3 CYB3RN3T1CS SH0P. V3RY P0PUL4R W1TH TH3 CYB0RG P0PUL4T10N. WHY?"

"Yeah. He's the lead. See y'all when you get here pardners."

After freerunning your way to the Neon District you hop off a building a block away from Rioletti's. You jog the rest of the way and around a corner you see Sixer.

You spot him through the neon lit glass window panes of the shop. Past the displays of various upgradable hidden weaponry and many models cybernetic limbs. He's talking emphatically with a large potbellied man with his arms crossed, presumably Rioletti. He does not look amused in the slightest. As you approach the shop door Sixer turns and sees you. He hustles over to the door and brings you inside.

"C'mon in y'all."

Rioletti harumphs.

"No. Go ahead. I love it when non-customers enter my shop. Please. Come on in. Shit on my floor while you're at it. Or perhaps you'd prefer to go and kick my childhood pet? Sixer you dumb hick... I told you already I'm not saying anything. If you talk around here it's bad for business. So you and your cape chumps can beat it."

As you reach the counter more of his features begin to stand out. He doesn't have eyes... or not real ones anyway. Melded into his sockets are telescoping lenses and his left ear is capped with a metal dome with a red ring of light on its outward face. You can hear a wierd skittering beneath the desk. Best not to question it right now.

F0R3M4N pulls you aside and attempts to whisper to you. He is very bad at it.

"TH1S W1LL B3 D1FF1CULT. H0W D0 Y0U SUPP0S3 W3 C0NVINC3 H1M T0 T4LK?"

He has a point...

Attacking a man like him in his own shop isn't wise so let's try to do it the sweet way. Offer to make a large purchase to upgrade Foreman in return for the information.

>>3727318
Ask Sixer, is the information stored elsewhere ? If it is we could user our phasing power to "borrow" it for a while.

The fastest way to get us out of here is to tell us what we need to know. It's a lot worse for business having three capes hanging around like a bad smell.
