”A Knight is Sworn to Valour. His Heart Knows Only Virtue. His Blade Defends the Helpless. His Might Upholds the Weak. His Word Speaks Only Truth. His Wrath Undoes the Wicked.”

Every child in Cantôn knows of the Knight’s Code. From peasant-born waifs playing with sticks in the mud to keen-eyed noble sons practicing with cold steel in the training yard, all have at the very least dreamed of one day becoming a knight themselves. To ride out on errantry into the Five Duchies Kingdom and beyond for God and Glory, bringing the Law of Adam to the wicked and the Blade of Cain to the beast.

The Knights of Cantôn are sworn to follow the Code, to obey the King, to refuse no call for aid honestly asked for, to seek out and destroy the Foe wherever it may lurk and rid the world of evil.

Were it so easy…

Many years from now, not far from home…

”I don’t understand.” The boy asks while the bard slakes his thirst with a goblet of Romani Red, compliments of the house. ”Didn’t Sir Andrei win the melee? What was he worrying for?”

”Ah my boy, you see Sir Andrei may have been supreme on the field but he knew that the lords of that forested Duchy play hard and fast with their interpretation of the law. If the Duke Fallavon wanted this interloper that had injured his heir imprisoned and put to death, trial or no, then our Romani knight was a long way from any help.” The stranger’s eyes twinkle over the rim of his cup as he smiles conspiratorially at the crowd leaning in, straining to hear his words. ”So yes lad, our brave knight had plenty cause to be worried. He was treading around the edges of a much more dangerous game, and the time would soon come where he would have to choose to dive in head first or stop playing altogether.”

”More dangerous than jousting an’ duelling?” The boy’s sister asks, incredulous. ”More dangerous than the forest roads?”

”More dangerous by far, girl. More dangerous by far…”

Fenegan, 9th Day of Ovrimun, 883 A.C.E. – Late-Evening, Lord Duncan’s Banquet

>Persuade Lady Elisabeth Fallavon
>3 Successes
>Lady Fallavon accepts hurting her brother was an accident in a risky endeavour and appreciates your concern. House Fallavon is indifferent to you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JJ-RSyhLpo – Popular Fallavon song

After congratulating the bride and groom on their happy day you pause a moment by Lady Elisabeth Fallavon’s seat. The daughter of the Duke regards you coolly, doubtless not inclined to give you the time of day in light of you severely injuring and possibly crippling her brother in today’s melee. Nonetheless you press on.

”By Reginae's grace, Your Ladyship, I pray that your brother will recover soon. I know accidents like these are to be expected in such violent sports but still, I wish to extend my own apologies for the inadvertent wounding of your brother today. He is a splendid Knight and each day he is unable to ride for Fallavon is a great loss for the Kingdom. I realise I may be speaking out of station here, but if you or your family ever find themselves in Romaine, please allow my family to show you our hospitality.”

The Lady Fallavon swirls her cup contemplatively, the silence drawing out long enough to be considered uncomfortable. For a moment you suspect that she will refuse to even acknowledge you, but at last she responds. ”Sir Andrei, what do you think of this song?”

[1/7]
>>
>>3725766

”It is well sung.” You reply cautiously, not wishing to give offence.

”Indeed. But that is not what I was asking.” Lady Fallavon’s expression reminds you of a cat playing with its food. ”My question was more directed to the contents rather than the quality. Do they have the song of the tryst between Queen Maya and her Herald Fontaine in Romaine?”

”We do, Your Ladyship. Though the Romani version concerning Sir Fontaine’s weakness… and Queen Maya’s adultery, they are not viewed with such…”

”Sympathy? No, I imagine the pious preachers of Romaine have an altogether different outlook of the affair.” Lady Fallavon smirks, you feel as out of your depth discussing poetry with her as you had with your sisters. ”The people of this Duchy have a more, shall we say ‘romantic’ view of crimes of passion and acts borne out of love. So believe me when I say, if I suspected for a moment that your foolish harming of my beloved brother was anything other than unintentional… I would not hesitate to use every shred of influence at my disposal to utterly destroy you.” There is a dangerous pause as talk lulls, the daughter of the Duke had not bothered to lower her voice. Finally, Lady Fallavon gives an easy laugh and the frosty air of hostility dissipating. A bead of sweat trickles down your back as conversations resume around you, comprehending that you may have just dodged a figurate crossbow bolt. ”A good thing then that I believe it was an unfortunate accident. I do not suffer fools, but nor do I unjustly see them punished. I cannot speak for my other relatives, but I will pass on your apologies. You will find no warm welcome in our halls, but you will not find yourself interfered on the road. Not at our command, in any case.”

”My thanks to Your Ladyship’s wisdom and understanding.” You say with a bow. You realise you’re laying it on thick, but the last thing you need is to make an enemy of the Duke’s heirs. Not both of them, at the very least.

”Spare me your flattery, knight.” Although the Lady’s dismissal is brusque it is thankfully without hostility. ”Go. Enjoy the feast and let me do the same.”

>Elicit Information: Mademoiselle Ava Sinclair
>3 Success
>The Maid Sinclair provides extensive insight into Duchy politics. Additionally, she shares some geographic knowledge of the terrain north of Motte-Fallavon.

As you return to your seat you find it remarkably easy to speak to the object of your affection, Mademoiselle Ava Sinclair is a shy dinner companion at first but warms up to conversation. Across the table Lady Rabe gives you a smug look and a raised eyebrow, hinting none-too-subtly that she’s very happy Lady Duncan listened to her advice on the seating arrangements.

While Ava tells you of her home Duchy, you piece together some interesting information in between the remarks about the wonderful walks and glossary on rare flowers she has collected. House Sinclair is one of the more virulently independent fiefs in the Duchy, boasting a reputation as a house of hardy warriors where every male of noble birth is destined for knighthood. Real knighthood, according to her brothers and cousins, which to them entails being an effective and lethal warrior above all else. That said, they scorn the idea of Errantry outside of hunting down monsters on their fringes of their own lands. Their duty is to their family and holdings, first and foremost.

With scattered lands in the wild north and west of Fallavon, their territories are one of the hardest to police. The Law of Adam is applied swiftly and brutally at the discretion of the nobles with harsh punishments, even by the standards of the Duchy, being meted out for even fairly minor offences such as illegal forestry or poaching. Ava Sinclair tells you that you’re fortunate the Lady Fallavon accepted your apology, even if repercussions weren’t as severe as seeking your arrest or barring you from attending the Festival they could have at the least declared that no one in the Duchy could be permitted to lend you aid or shelter. You get the impression that this independence is not atypical of Lords are here and you imagine that must grind against the Duke, even if Ava seems largely unaware of the rift. Perhaps such a decree was not made because it would only invite defiance of it.

”The border to the north is not official, but according to my uncle few hunters will venture beyond the Abhain River. There is no bridge, but it can be forded in a few places this time of year apparently.”

”I must admit I am surprised that My Lady is so knowledgeable of these treacherous lands.”

”Well it’s… I mean I’ve read about it in books, also sometimes my uncle’s head huntsman will tell stories at dinner and...” The red-haired damsel averts her gaze with some embarrassment. ” I don’t think treacherous is the right word. Dangerous, of course. But wonderful too. I have heard that sailors say much the same about the sea. I’ve always wanted to see it for myself. It must be beautiful.”

A hard trek through the dangerous wilderness to the north sounds a mite bit more dangerous than a pleasant walk in the woods. Either the Maid Sinclair’s naiveté is showing, or this flame-haired freckle-faced slip of a girl has a more adventurous spirit than is strictly sensible for a well-born woman.

The Maiden Sinclair pauses from your conversation to reach for another morsel of fruit, only to knock over a platter of wine being held by Mikail who was waiting on you. Mikail tries to salvage the clatter of plates, but the damage is done. The material on the whole of the arm on the Maid Sinclair’s dress is rapidly stained red.

”Ohhh, drat!” Ava Sinclair frowns in annoyance. ”Just… get me a cloth or something, please. Hopefully this will come out. Oh, Sir Andrei please don’t hurt him!”

”I… hurt him?” You asked, genuinely puzzled. You’d risen from your seat to dab at the wine spreading on the table, not punish your squire who you wave away with an irritated flick of the wrist.

”Sorry sir, it is not my place. But that was partly my fault, the boy does not deserve a beating.”

You’re a tad confused as to why the Mademoiselle is making excuses on your squire’s behalf. It was entirely Mikail’s fault. Your squire had been standing too close to the lady when serving drinks, an amateur mistake for a castle servant. It may warrant a harsh reprimand and retraining on his courtly skills, but he’s still learning. Still, it is not the fact that Ava feared you would have the boy punished but that you would bring it upon yourself to disrupt the dinner and thrash Mikail for his idiocy. Is the beating of commonfolk something that happens a lot in this Duchy, or is your reputation really so fearsome?

By the Almighty, if you were going to punish a servant you would order it seen to, not take it upon yourself to lay about it with your fists like a tavern lout. Father had never even raised his voice at the dinner table. You’d seen father order punishment, and the kitchen staff might give a particularly slow apprentice a smack at their own discretion, but beat a man with your fists in a rage for spilling wine? You wonder if this is an indication of the Fallavon Duchy, where the privileges and powers of the lords over their subjects are more entrenched, or just of the men in the Maid Sinclair’s life.

>Persuade Lady Frida Vancewell
>1 Success
>You receive no impression of the Lady Vancewell’s character or intentions. Conversation is stilted, each participant wary of the other.

As Lady Rabe and Mademoiselle Sinclair depart to see if a quick wash will save the sleeve you also rise from your chair and nearly bump into a pale woman wearing a stunning black-and-gold dress.

”My apologies, Lady…”

”Vancewell. Lady Frida Vancewell. You must be Sir Emile Andrei.”

”I suppose I must.”

”I had heard that the Marquis was courting you. A very fine catch, as a suitor.”

Although Lady Vancewell does not say ‘you mean the suitor you just crippled’, her raised eyebrow certainly suggests that what she was thinking. ”Indeed, lucky me. I have heard you are on pilgrimage.”

”I am.”

”Well. Lucky you.”

”Yes, lucky me.”

You both seem to flounder for a topic that doesn’t relate to you getting her brother executed. Lady Vancewell keeps her expression set to such a careful nonchalance that you would have little reason to assume she was treating this exchange with suspicion. Likewise your countenance is stony, wary glances in between stilted conversation that skirts the line between danger and awkwardness. To an outsider it would have appeared to have been the most obdurate encounter between two strangers at a party struggling to start a conversation that had ever been witnessed.

‘Bumbling Romani Bear, I will destroy you and everything you love’ you imagine her say. Instead she curtseys with a polite smile. ”A pleasure meeting you, Sir Andrei.”

‘Not if I crush you underheel first, you treacherous mountain snake’ you think but instead bow in turn and say ”Likewise, Lady Vancewell.”

Perhaps you’re envisaging things a little too vividly. Certainly none of you gave the other any reason to suspect that you are mutually seeking the other’s destruction. Perhaps Lady Vancewell is only glad you removed her brother, this encounter being an awkward reminder of how good fortunate came about rather than a meeting with a hated foe. It doesn’t help that the Lady Frida Vancewell is undeniably attractive, in a cold and harsh sort of way. Perhaps she inherited all the admirable qualities of the family, and her brother all the bad. And really, what do you have against the House Vancewell? Sir Rabe is certain they’re running an illegal smuggling operation, a false knight claimed they were favoured of the Duke and Crown Prince… but how does any of this relate to you beyond… Bah. Bah you say, you’ll dwell no more on this tonight.

Cain on the Cross, you need a drink.

>Forced Counter-Intrigue: Lady Frida Vancewell
>0 Success
>The ploy goes smoothly, and you are none the wiser.

Over the course of the dinner you occasionally catch a glimpse of Lady Friday Vancewell deep in conversation with prominent members of the court, namely Lord Duncan and the Lady Fallavon. What they talk of and what House Vancewell hopes to gain from them, you can only guess at. She leaves the feast earlier than most, you assume to check on the Marquis.
If your sisters had been here, doubtless they would have been able to engineer a way to work your way into the discussions or just outright eavesdrop and try to determine what, if anything, was afoot. Well, perhaps not Maryla. You can’t even say she had any ulterior motive beyond that of a concerned object of the Marquis Caspian Fallavon’s affection, it’s not like it was unusual for a woman of her breeding to be having an audience the host and Lady Fallavon.

Eventually you despair of making sense of it and, seeing that the Maid Sinclair and Lady Rabe must have retired, you take a seat at the bench with the knights that made up your team in the melee. Here, at least, there is some good cheer and frank words to be had.

[7/7]
>>
[7/7]

Somewhere between the second and third round of drinks, after the toasts to the victory of your team and the merits of each man present, the four of you agree that a knight is many things but that they must be a warrior first and foremost. What follows is an increasingly heated, or at least loud, argument over what the single most crucial attribute of a great warrior, and therefore a knight, really is.

”A warrior’s purpose is to win battles. Battle is conflict, the ultimate last resort of discourse between any two opposing forces. Victory is survival, defeat extinction. Faced as we are with creatures that would see mankind in the crypts or their larders, victory must be achieved with a singular bloody-mindedness and purpose of body.” Sir Jean Sinclair speaks with a cool certainty that you might be minded to call arrogant, though he speaks bluntly and without the flowery airs of someone used to courtly discourse. ”Anything less and we fail not just ourselves but our entire species. Thus, strength and the naked ability to emerge victorious is single most important attribute of a warrior.”

”Nay, Sir Sinclair. Fortitude is the key. It’s not about how hard you can hit, or even the winning of it, it’s about how many times you can get back up after being beat.” Sir Karlaus Rabe thumps his chest for effect. ”It’s about taking a hit, picking yourself up out of the dust and diving back in for another round, again and again.”

”They cannot pick themselves up if you cut off their head.” Sir Sinclair retorts.

”Strength and determination are both admirable attributes in a fighter, but they immune to being twisted to dark purposes.” Sir Neil dan Marc shakes his head, both refuting the claims of his drinking companions and perhaps attempting to clear the ruddiness from his cheeks. ”The most important quality of a warrior of man, especially one anointed in the light of the Almighty, is that above all they be to thine own self true. Honesty and keeping one’s word can never by themselves be used as tools of darkness.”

”Preposterous. By your logic if I were to say that I will kill a newborn babe, and then do so, that is a fine and noble thing because I kept to my word.” Sir Sinclair scoffs, rolling his eyes as Sir dan Marc blusters his retort.

”That’s not at all what I-“

”Friends, friends!” Sir Rabe waves for calm, though his wide-grin betrays his enjoyment of the lively exchange. ”We should allow Sir Andrei to speak his piece, eh?”

>You agree with Sir Rabe. Determination to pick oneself up time and again after defeat is more important. [Hearty]

”You each make a strong case, but I must ultimately agree with my friend Sir Rabe here. We knights are at times faced with foes that outmatch us in every aspect, to show the courage to try again and again despite past defeats is the key to eventual victory. Both as a warrior and as a superior species I suppose.” Sir Rabe manages to nod at your words and scull his drink at the same time. ”The determination to push onwards, no matter the odds or outcome, is by far more admirable than fighting when your strength will guarantee you victory, or for that matter being trusted to do what you say you will.”

”Hah! I knew you had some lick of sense in that Romani brain of yours.” Karlaus slaps your back heartily mid-sip, launching you into an ungentlemanly fit of coughing.

”Bah, pure favouritism I say! You have a soft spot for your Brunian road companion, is all.” Sir Sinclair sneers, though there is little malice in it.

”Our only recourse then to this agreement is by a trial of arms.” At the questioning looks of his teammates, Sir dan Marc raises his mug. ”I mean a drinking contest, of course.”

”Very well then.” Sir Sinclair nods, calling over a servant to refill all your pitchers. You give a weary groan as Sir Rabe bursts into another bout of laughter.

Things get a little more lively after that, but try as you may you have difficulty remembering much of it. Certainly you forgot who won, though you have the impression Karlaus and you gave a decent account of yourselves. Or at least he did. Somehow you managed to find yourself snoring in your assigned tent some hours later.

”Ugh. What time is it?” You cast your eyes about blearily, barely making out your squire

”Late, milord. Or early. Sorry to disturb ye, but a messenger came in the night, had a letter for you.” Mikail hands you an envelope, the wax seal bears the House Andrei sigil. ”Took off ‘fore I could get I word in.”

A letter in the night? The carrier must have arrived at Motte-Fallavon and been told they could find you here. Why it couldn’t wait a day or two for your return though…

”Fetch me some light. And be discreet about it.”

”Right away, milord.”

[3/3]

To My Cherished Son,

I have to admit I am somewhat distraught that you have decided to go off on some hare-brained adventure around the world under the pretence of a sabbatical pilgrimage. Have you no thought for your dear old mother? I was so looking forward to showing you off to all the young ladies at the Summer Tourney, it’s about time we got you settled down and with a few grandchildren for me since your elder brother Damien is taking his sweet time about it. At least that way you won’t be so quick to run away from home and VERY PROUD! JUST LIKE YOUR OL’ GRANDAD, EH? Stop it, Nikky. Honestly.

Please be careful, Emile. Your grandfather may have returned safely from his pilgrimage but there are plenty of those who fall prey to wickedness and danger on the way. YOU CAN TRUST THOSE BLOODY SLAVERS ABOUT AS BLOODY FAR AS YOU CAN BLOODY THROW THEM, MY BOY. As I was saying, you must take care. And not just of those foreigners, I know you’ve made friends with this Sir Gilbern but those Order Reginae types are not to be trifled with. Powerful friends often bring powerful enemies along to the party. We have heard no more of your brother, by all accounts you’re the last person who has had any word of him.

The girls very much appreciated your gifts, but now they simply won’t leave me alone about taking them to the markets for shopping and such. They even want an excursion to the Royal Court! Insufferable. The twins want hugs and kisses; Maryla all but demands that you update her on your battle stories; Halina wants to know more about Sister Ignatius and Father Towbray; Anastazja wants to know if you’ve met a girl yet while Roselyn just wants you not to step on the toes of anyone too important while you’re away gallivanting.

Do try to oblige them, dear.

Heartfelt love and prayers,

LADY PATRYCJA S. ANDREI
AND LORD NIKOLAI ANDREI

We can continue the pilgrimage after we find Damien and come back from the woods right?
>>
>>3727519
At this point I doubt we have a dangerous tail. We have good rep with sir gilbern and this was in the capital which means that a direct movement against us by the order reginae is unlikely. Any vector against us would likely be by house vancewell or other unknown forces arrayed against out house.

Furthermore, advancing into the woods puts us in vicinity of our brother's operations and whatever opposition there may be. Especially since we're likely to go in without fully trusted help save our squire, we'll be in a bad situation and likely force our brother to come to our aid if we're frakked.

Lastly, we're on the roads with pilgrims and knight comitas. The former will attest to our good character and the latter are sworn to protect pilgrims, of which we are one as well.

Include a general accounting of what we've been up to. Up to and including news of the tournament and the relations we've learnt of. The accidental injury of the Heir and his courting of Lady Vancewell are very important bits of information that need to be included. Our mother and sister will know what to do with it or what to watch out for.

We should write also of what we intend to do for here on and in code, inscribe what new information on our brother that we've learned.

Regarding our letter, theres no need to burn the whole thing.

Cut out the bottom and burn the cypher.

I back this but I think we should add actual details about the battles we've been in as per their request (fighting that monster on the way here), our interest in Lady Sinclair, details on what happened in the tourney itself as well as the fact that we seemed to have smoothed things overt with the Favallon family. Send our love and tell them we'll stay watchful and not trust anyone too deeply. Although tell them that Sir Rabe is a good man that we've developed a good friendship with.

Tell the sisters about the philosophical arguments of Sister Ignatius and Father Towbray as well. We may as well indulge them in all the fun little bits and pieces of the journey they are so interested in. To ignore that might seem suspicious

Mother's encrypted message is giving me doubts about following our brother specially since it will delay our pilgrimage. But I feel we at least have to hear his side of the story leaving him to the winds.

>Especially since we're likely to go in without fully trusted help save our squire, we'll be in a bad situation and likely force our brother to come to our aid if we're frakked.

This is a situation where we'll either have to gone in with a trusted few and what equipment we can afford on our persons, or go in with men we can't gurantee but trust but with a better chance of actually making progress in decent time and less chance of being monster chow.

>Lastly, we're on the roads with pilgrims and knight comitas. The former will attest to our good character and the latter are sworn to protect pilgrims, of which we are one as well.

It's nothing about bringing them into the forest. I'm staying sticking with people we're familiar with and in a large group AND continuing on our pilgrimage will be safer since the roads unsafe comment means that extralegal methods are likely inplay.

Joke to momma bear know that ser Andrei's presence will still be felt at the tourney, then address the snafu with the Marquis. Advise he'll be watchful and hopes the rest of the family does the same.
Let her know he's learning more about court and courting, not always in the happiest sense, but steps forward are being made. Gently mention Mlle Sinclair, but try not to get her hopes up and say the pilgrimage needs to be finished first.
Mention ser dan Marc, that should make poppa bear excited. Update the girls as requested.

the players around our Brothers intrigue are almost certainly wielding extra judical and judical authority and no amount of character witnesses or common companion is going to help us from that, likely the only thing that will is either picking a side in the conflict in the hopes of protection or GTFOing into a part of the world where the crowns authority has little power.

>You will head north of Motte-Fallavon, deep into the untamed woodlands in search of your brother. Family is family, and he may need your help. [Into the Woods]

It takes you no time at all to decode the message, for once glad of Master Handark’s dreary cryptology lessons from your youth. To think you had first thought ‘cryptology’ to have meant the study of fighting the undead. You’ve heard of the Wytes, or at least their sort. Bluejay Bands. Rebels without a cause passing themselves off as something better than common brigands. That your brother has fallen in with such, or been accused of doing so, is a cause for worry. Out there in the untamed lands such Bluejays and other ungoverned settlements are rumoured to roam free, fearing only the Order of Names and the ever-present Foe.

In your letter you skirt a fine line between giving a detailed, gory account of the encounter with the fell Wodenaki whilst also keeping the language appropriate for a young lady to read. And you of course give Hannibal his due credit for their part in the victory. Doubtless Maryla will find that entertaining to no end. You do your best to recount the arguments of Father Towbray and Sister Ignatius as best you can, though you freely admit to Halina in your let philosophy was not one of your strong suits. Anastazja will probably find your casual mentions of the Maid Ava Sinclair highly amusing, despite your honest and respectful language.

You wince as you write about your victory over the Marquis Fallavon in the melee following your close placing as second in the jousts. Father will be proud but you hold no illusions that Mother and your more sensible sisters will be anything but furious that you have risked the ire of a powerful Duke with your feat of arms. You make sure to mention the presence of Lady Vancewell and her bethrotal. Ill news, if it is such, is best delivered in one blow.
At the bottom of the parchment you encode that you intend to look for Damien in the woodlands to the north.

Once that is done, you tuck your reply underneath your shirt and destroy the letter from home. You still don't know what you plan to do if you find your brother. No, not if. When. Will you give him aid, convince him to come home... or perhaps stop him from doing anything more reckless than he already has? You won't sleep easy tonight. The paper curls in yours hands as the flame takes it, the last words ’love and prayers’ reflected in your eyes by the sole candlelight.

Sandag, 10th Day of Ovrimun, 883 A.C.E - Midday

You find yourself far from alone on the road to Motte-Fallavon the next day, many nobles that attended Lord Duncan’s Tourney have decided to avail themselves of the upcoming festival at Motte-Fallavon. None you have spoken to intend to stand the vigil or bear a lantern, in fact a few look at your piety askance when you mention you’re not going to just get drunk and party with the rest of them. You’re a long way from pious and faithful Romaine.

Lady Rabe has managed to talk her way into an invitation to the Sinclair Tower after the festival and Mademoiselle Ava Sinclair is apparently quite happy to have some female company in a house dominated by burly warrior men that talk of nothing but hunting and fighting all day. Your friend Sir Karlaus Rabe is eager enough at Sir Jean Sinclairs talk of the fine hunting to be had on their scattered estates, and not at all perturbed at the prospect of running into a monster or two while on a jaunt through the woods in the huntsman party.

"From the way you tell it, we could head out hunting for common game in the morning and come back with a Wyvern's head slung over our shoulders!" Sir Rabe boasts with a broad smile.

"Contrary to the stories, Wyverns rarely come down from the rocky Crags to the forest floor." Sir Sinclair states as a matter-of-fact, to Sir Rabe's dismay. "Sir Andrei, the invitation is of course extended to a mighty warrior such as yourself."

"Smash a smarmy Duke's son into the dirt and you open all sorts of doors, eh Em?" Sir Rabe winks and grins with all the subtlety of the battleaxe strapped to his side.

"I am sure that is not what the good Sir Sinclair meant, Karlaus." You shake your head regretfully, despite the appeal of some fun. "I'm afraid I must decline though, I have another task ahead of me."

"Oh right, I forgot. The pilgrimage. You sure you can't take just a few days off? Bag yourself a giant boar or two? Ah well, can't be helped."

As your fellow knights go back to discussing their past hunts, you give some thought to asking for aid. It hurts your pride to admit it, but the prospect of a few armed companions as you travel north is a comforting thought. You have a few days before the festival to organise your venture north, and plenty of time to approach potential companions over the course of it if you wish to recruit them. But do you really wish to risk entangling anyone else in this web of secrets and schemes? Perhaps travelling alone, or near enough, is the wiser course in those dark woods. It's not just monsters lurking out there between the trees, it's something a lot worse if you run afoul of it.

Politics.

===================================

Having made the decision to look for your brother, I would suggest giving thought to how secretive you wish to keep this and also preparations and purchases to be made. A larger party will be safer in conflict, but slower and leave a more obvious footprint (politically and literally). As a heads up the later vote to confirm purchases will also include other options to spend wealth not listed on the market, such as a potential guide and lodging for the pilgrims.
>>

(1) Into the Woods: Enlisting Companions over the next few days You can pick any, none or all. Depending on the companion or how much you divulge, a persuasion test may be required. Or a favour owed. Decent write-ins for approaches will net DC bonuses to persuade, or even auto-passes. OOC let me please assure you there is not really ‘bad-wrong’ choice between taking NONE or ALL the companions you can, each side of the scale will come with its own challenges and benefits.
>Mikail of Andryski. The boy is practically joined to you at the hip. Where you go he goes, come what may. At least he's better handling his sword than he the serving platter.
>Sir Karlaus Rabe. A fine warrior and and an erstwhile friend, someone to watch your back. Not a man for discretion, but you're not bringing him along for his subtlety.
>Sir Jean Sinclair. An accomplished knight with a half-dozen men-at-arms to hand and no slouch with the blade himself. A bit of a cold character to be indebted, but you might consider his aid worth it.
>Sir Neil dan Marc. A knight who values honesty, never mind his modest breeding. He is young and untested, but as your sworn man you will have to trust him at some point.
>Brother Marcel Rousseau. The holy knight will likely follow if you ask for aid, even if this detour is not strictly part of your pilgrimage. As for discretion, you feel you can trust the man to hold his tongue even if he wasn't sworn to silence.
>Someone else. Maybe one of the Duncans or someone else you've met recently. Perhaps Sir Hewitt? Hah.

(2) Plots within Plots. How much do you tell your companions?
You guys have accrued a lot of theories (and some evidence). Some of those theories are WAY off, but some of them hit close to the mark. It's up to you how much of that you want to share.

>You tell them that you are searching for someone in the north, and that this mission is matter of the utmost delicacy to you. If pressed for details you tell them you cannot in good faith divulge any secrets, but you will ask nothing of them that would bring them dishonour. [Haughty]

>You are frank and open with the details, including not just what you know about the situation but also what you may suspect may be at work and who the possible players are. You fear that your theories risk you sounding paranoid, but you hold nothing back. [Hearty]
>You tell them that you are searching for your brother, and that he may have gotten involved in over his head with dangerous opponents at Court. You do not mention the coded message, but you do say that it is likely your brother has made powerful enemies and needs your help. [Idealist]

Tell Mik that we're looking for our brother, he doesn't need to know much, it isn't like he has a choice. Maybe tell him this will be dangerous and give him the option to stay back if he wants (obviously he will decline but it allows him to be brave on his own terms and act like a real knight)

Tell Rabe the whole thing, we can trust him, he is like a brother to us and I would feel terrible involving him in something this potentially dangerous without giving him the details. Especially given how fast we've become friends and how good he has been to us

Tell Sir dan Marc very little, we're traveling North to find someone in our family that we believe may be in danger. It will be dangerous but there may also opportunity for glory, greatness and justice being done. We're doing this for a good cause.

I think the 4 of us, if properly outfitted should be enough to tackle things. I think adding any more is pretty risky. MAYBE Brother Marcel Rousseau but if he sees something he doesn't like he may feel compelled to tell the authorities given his position in a holy order

Mikail and Sir Neil won't need convincing and for Karlaus we're blood brothers now, are we not?
For Brothel Marcel we can compare the situation to Gabriel and to spare the thought of your family waiting for months if ever without news of our brother given he's in a even more secluded place.
Sir Sinclair doesn't seem close enough yet for us to really trust with this; also if he finds out what Damien is accused of it may affect his opinion given that the Bluejays are such a problem in Fallavon.

"Sir Ra-... Karlaus, I've been meaning to talk to you. It is true that I pledged myself to complete this pilgrimage, but there is a pressing family matter I must attend to first... and I would have your help if you were willing to provide it. I consider you a brother, if not by relation then by combat and bloodshed in battle so I will not lie to you, what I am planning will likely be dangerous. It seems my brother has become tangled up in some court intrigue; there are rumours that he has been aiding rebels called “The Wytes”. I don’t believe it could be true, if it is there must be a reason but it seems he has made powerful enemies and has travelled north. I intend to track him down and find out the truth of it all myself and bring him home if I have to. I do not think I can do this alone, not out there in the wilderness against unknown enemies. To have my brother in arms watching my back and fighting alongside me would be like Salve Reginae herself blessing our journey. To put it simply, I need your aide and would consider myself in your debt. Will you help me brother?”

>>Mikail
“Mikail boy, how has your studying been going? Have you been keeping at the books? Practicing your forms with the sword? Good… good. Mikail you’ve been a fine squire thus far, your manners could use some polish but you are progressing finely and I believe one day you’ll make a fine knight, perhaps if you’re lucky… very lucky Mikail, you may even make it to you Roiguard – calm down lad, I said perhaps and very lucky. For that to happen however you must survive and as you are well aware the life of a knight is one fraught with danger. I am about to give you a choice that you’ll likely not be given again in my service, I plan to head north to investigate something on behalf of my family, it will be dangerous and we may not survive to come home. As a knight in training, as a man, I will let you decide. Will you join me on this treacherous journey? Feel no shame if you wish to remain here for the time being, you have a long life ahead of you and it would be foolish to throw that away on a whim simply because I am rushing headlong into danger. However know that if you join me on this you will have my gratitude and my trust for life”

However I must, because it is for my family and I too am a man of honour and will not leave family to perish alone or be vanished away by unscrupulous nobles and their plots. I ask you to join me, to fight beside me, to act as my shield as I will yours and to keep silence on anything you see or hear throughout the journey. You are my sworn sword but in this task I give you leave should you request it. I am asking a great deal of you and offering very little in return but my loyalty and a share of any spoils in the journey ahead. Know that I will consider myself indebted to you and will do all I can to repay your loyalty in this. If I ask too much you may remain here in Motte-Fallavon until I return and we will speak of it no longer. Will you join me Sir?”

>(1) Into the Woods: Enlisting Companions over the next few days You can pick any, none or all.
>>Mikail of Andryski. The boy is practically joined to you at the hip. Where you go he goes, come what may. At least he's better handling his sword than he the serving platter.
>>Sir Neil dan Marc. A knight who values honesty, never mind his modest breeding. He is young and untested, but as your sworn man you will have to trust him at some point.

Considerations:
1) Mikail is ours and a good kid. He'll follow us into hell or highwater anyways so yes.
2) Sir Rabe is going to be escorting his sister home after the festivities. I would not deprive his sister of his escort home as he should and must need to look to his own family first.
3) Sir Jean is still very much an unknown. It would not be a good idea to risk the secret being blown open at this stage.
4) We will have to trust Neil at some point and perhaps we should show trust in him as he has since sworn his sword to us.
5) Brother Marcel is still committed to the pilgramage and as part of the ordos, he might be obliged to inform his superiors of any findings he comes across in this expedition. We should keep this within our family.

(2) Plots within Plots. How much do you tell your companions?
>>You tell them that you are searching for your brother, and that he may have gotten involved in over his head with dangerous opponents at Court. You do not mention the coded message, but you do say that it is likely your brother has made powerful enemies and needs your help. [Idealist]

For both of them. For one Mikail is a little slow. An explanation in broad terms and emphasis of the bonds of family coupled with the fact that he probably knows our brother means he'll easily come along.

For Sir Neil, this is a case of trusting him and showing our cards. He will understand the faith we have placed in him and by further emphasis on the bonds of family, he is likely to be easily swayed to come too.

Trying to keep different levels of secrecy in a party this small is likely to be folly. We should be honest and clear to the party members so that they know the score.

>Mikail & Sir Neil together
"Sir Neil, while we have not known each other long, your sworn sword means a great deal to me. What little I have seen is of a knight who conducts himself honourably, justly and can hold his own in a fight. I hope to oneday be worthy of your sword. Mikail, you have travelled with me far and I am proud to see you grow from strength to strength. Your bladework is much improved and with time and more study, I believe you will make a fine knight, perhaps even a member of the King's Guard as you earnestly wish.

I do however now have a problem which I need to face. Mikail, remember my brother, Damien, no? He is my elder brother, a fine knight sure of arms and fiery of faith, one whom I look up to dearly. The word we have received on the road and from home indicate he may be in some trouble and in these woods here in Fallavon. It is my intention to go deep within to try and find him and render any aid I can. As this looks to be a fairly dangerous matter, I will not order either of you to come with me BUT I would ask of you two to come with me, freely.

Beyond the dangers of the woods, he likely has raised the ire of foes in the court and I cannot but go to his aid. What worth are such bonds if those of family, friends and comrades are so easily forsaken. We must be true to where we come from and who we are and I am not so little of a man to leave my brother in the lurch.

(Mind you there is reason to the madness of talking to both at the same time. Mikail is likely to join up with us regardless. I'm intending to use peer pressure and a direct thrust at being true to ones feelings and comrades to slice through any resistance Sir Neil has while avoiding talk of leigeship and more of companionship. Implying we see more of him as a comrade and friend than a simple sworn blade.)

I'd counter that since Lady Rabe is going to the Sinclair castle for a while it she could possibly hang out there until Rabe gets back, especially considering Ava seems keen on having female company for once
>>
>>3729791
1) Bringing in Sir Rabe brings in their family into this absolute shitfest of a political clusterfuck. If the political side goes tits up, they'll be isolated alongside us and I'd not subject them to that. It'll also likely wreck relations between both families. Furthermore if it does get frakked, having a ally outside the yay/nay lines will give our family some breathing and maneuvering space.

2) Lady Rabe is a strong lady who has Sir Rabe under her foot. If we're going to have him come with us, hes and us are likely gonna have to tell her everything as to why. This leads into the next biggest problem that Lady Rabe has the loudest indoor voice this side of the mountain and cannot keep a secret to save her life. Within a week of our expedition, everyone and their dog will know where and why we went. Including Lady Vancewell.

>Bringing in Sir Rabe brings in their family into this absolute shitfest of a political clusterfuck.

Maybe. Obviously we can trust him to keep it all to himself but I suppose there is a possibility that someone will recognize him, although I think that isn't massively likely

>Lady Rabe is a strong lady who has Sir Rabe under her foot. If we're going to have him come with us, hes and us are likely gonna have to tell her everything as to why

I mean she has a big personality yeah but I don't think Sir Rabe is such a pushover that he would decline to come because she decides he can't. That doesn't seem in character for him at all, furthermore (and this is just me speculating) she seems to like us and I think if Rabe HAD to convince her to let him go she would support it if she knew it was something serious that we needed his help in

>> Lady Rabe has the loudest indoor voice this side of the mountain and cannot keep a secret to save her life. Within a week of our expedition, everyone and their dog will know where and why we went. Including Lady Vancewell.

Again she has a big personality but this really seems like a stretch. As far as I can recall I don't think we've seen any evidence of her being unable to keep a secret or being a big mouth etc etc. That seems like a pretty unfair judge of her character

>”Oh right. Of course. Silly me.” Mademoiselle Sinclair nods agreeably, sinking back from the conversation. According to the friendly but less-than-subtle Lady Rabe she is newly come to womanhood, still learning the ropes.

>”Sir Andrei, an unexpected pleasure.” Josephine Daubeny at the far end smiles as you join them in the stands. She wears a red kirtle, but also a black ribbon and long black gloves going up past the elbow which strike you as quite out of fashion.”Congratulations on your victory.”

>”Poor girl. She quite fancied this Aubres gentleman but he died fighting snakemen or something or other.” Lady Rabe’s voice appears genuinely sympathetic as she confides in you while she returns to her seat, but unfortunately Lady Rabe’s whispering is about as discreet as her brother and nearly as loud. ”But they didn’t have anything official going on, so her mother’s not even letting her dress in mourning. Wouldn’t want to put would-be suitors off. Heartless, really.”

>”It was beastmen, Your Ladyship. And you need not inform Sir Andrei, he was the one who told us of Gabriel’s…” The Mademoiselle Daubeny wears a thin smile, touching the ribbon in her hair with one gloves hand. ”I wear this black ribbon in memory of him.”

>Lady Rabe looks aghast, turning as red as a beetroot in moments. ”…oh bollywog! I’ve gone and done it again. Me and my stupid big mouth.”
>>
>>3729820
Alright fair call I didn't remember that scene until you linked it. I don't really see that as strong evidence that she can't keep a secret at all though, more that she made a social faux pa. Either way though we aren't bringing her and she doesn't need any details about where we are going or why. Sir Rabe is his own man, I don't see why he would need to tell her everything before leaving to help someone his considers a blood brother if he thinks there is risk she'll let something slip
>>
>>3729824
>”Fine bloody jousting there!” Sir Rabe slaps you on the back as you approach the stands a few minutes later, flush with this initial victory. You have changed out of your armour as the qualifying bouts won’t conclude until lunch. Sir Rabe pauses at the stand, his demeanour changing from elated to sour in an instant at the sight of a petite woman dressed in furs calling the both of you over.

>”That’s my big sister, Brünhilde. Fuck. I guess I should introduce you.” Sir Rabe grumbles miserably, shrinking into a slouch even as the two of you approach.

>”Yes, yes we shall take it from here, Kip. Don’t you have a joust to get to?” The diminutive Lady Brünhilde Rabe should not intimidate your gruff warrior companion, her nose barely reaches your chest, but the hardened northerner flees as if the joust were a less fearsome prospect than his sister. Probably before you can unpack the fact that his nickname is ‘Kip’. ”Come, Sir Andrei. Let me introduce you. This here is Lady Elisabeth Fallavon, and the Mademoiselles Ava Sinclair and Josephine Daubeny. Ladies, this is Sir Emile Andrei and if half of what my brother has said is true he can lift dragons and slay mountains.”

Theres also this earlier scene. Basically I don't believe he can win against her.
>>
>>3729826
I see what you're saying, I remember the scene but I disagree. I think the importance of what we're asking him to do would be enough to allow him to stand up to her if necessary and even then I think if he explained that he will be traveling with us to help us out because we're in need and that he can't share details she would probably understand. It isn't as if she is void of empathy and she seems to like us

We will have to. For the reason that we might not come out of this forest alive. In fact, I'm thinking of and preparing for letters to be held and sent out if we dont return after some time. Matter of who to trust currently.

Also any reasonable person, even someone like lady ava is gonna question changes to the itinerary especially if they were supposed to head home afterwards and I do not expect vague wishy washy answers to fly very well and if she sees well of us, she will expect a straight answer.

And then back to that incident. We literally just sat down to her and she's telling of such a tragic thing and in a loud voice. Whats more she chastens herself "I've gone and done it again." This isnt a one off thing and indicates great chattiness.
>>
>>3729841
We don't have to tell her anything, we can lie and say that we are sworn to secrecy or be honest and say that telling her may endanger her. At the end of the day we aren't making Rabe come with us, we're asking him to aid us but he can decide that it isn't in the best interest of his family. If he feels that he can only do so by sharing what is going on with his sister we can simply leave him behind and go on our way telling him that we need to keep as few people as possible in on the secret

I agree that it was clearly not a once off incident but it was also hardly a big important secret either. She let slip the manner of death of a womens betrothed in front of her which seems more like her being insensitive rather than completely unable to keep a secret (which again I don't think we need to let her in on). It isn't as if the information itself was a secret, it was just a faux pa to blithely chat about it in the open like that

Our brother is possibly involved in something that could be interpreted as treason against crown, I'd like to keep this as discrete as possible. Of course we can make our own choice on how to handle the situation when we get there, but bringing some whos not inherently beholden to us like mikail/Neil brings a risk that we make the situation much worse by involving outside parties.

I do think it's good for the boy to be in difficult situations, and he is the most loyal comrade Emile has. Hopefully he'll have good growth on this journey and it won't be necessary to depend on Death's Door.
>Ser dan Marc
Similar to the above, it's time to put Neil through his paces. He may bring some insights about the woods along as well, but he's taken the time to trust Emile, and so returning that trust in kind would be a good reflection on his decision.
>Brother Rousseau
Probably one of the more important individuals to have along. While he's not Karlaus, Marcel has a similar kit-out to serve as a stand-in for the bruiser. More importantly, acknowledging that this action is for family may help to buy his continued silence on the matter, considering his own situation. Moreover, should Emile be unfortunate enough to encounter members of the Order Reginae, Marcel's presence may be the only one capable of bringing them pause.

Four is a good number, not too large but we can still set up a rotating shift schedule as necessary. Add in a dog, and we're probably set as far as defense is concerned.

For the most part I'm fine with
>Idealist
But it's important to mention that this is a search for your brother. Other details can be filled in if absolutely necessary, but acknowledging blood will make it easier to win over Mikael and Marcel, and should give Neil an idea of what to expect in terms of loyalty.

New theory incoming

So we know Damien is accused of aiding a Bluejay band. What we don't know is, accused by who? We know that he is at odds with the Reginate so it is safe to assume they are the most likely to make this accusation.

The Reginate was also looking to thwart the activities of Sir Vancewell. It seemed that his allegiance was with the Prince. At least this is what he alluded to before losing his head.

Is it possible that Damien has allied himself with the Prince against the Queen? Seems likely. But why are the two at odds? Let's bring in the foreigners. The Prince has been allowing foreigners to travel Canton and hunt Foe. So why would the Queen care?

The Queen is the head of the church. Many of the more faithful are less trustful of outsiders. We have seen this with Emile himself.

So it seems kinda thin that Queen is just having a tissy over the Prince's antics. Unless...He's actively looking to reduce the church's influence or overthrow the church altogether. He showed disdain for knights standing the vigil at the church. The King is expected to choose a bride from a selection the church provides. Maybe he has other plans, foreign plans, and is looking to remove the obstacle. He may even already have a mistress from overseas.

TL;DR The Prince is trying to take down the church so he can fugg exotic wenches. Damien is trying to help him.

>The Reginate was also looking to thwart the activities of Sir Vancewell. It seemed that his allegiance was with the Prince. At least this is what he alluded to before losing his head.

We can't say he was looking to thwart his activities but we can say that the opportunity to see the end of a potential enemy agent was one the Regina wouldn't pass up

We can't draw a conclusion to the conspiracy as a whole only parts of it.

As you arrive at Motte-Fallavon you can see that the crowd has swelled many times the number of what it was when you left for the tourney. The day of the Festival draws near and the edict that no structures be built on the blue fields themselves are nonetheless dotted with market stalls and wagons. Some festivities have already begun, though the strong presence of the Duke Fallavon’s men-at-arms ensure anything too overt is shut down.
And if your eyes are not deceiving you the flowers scattered everywhere somehow seem… brighter. Or bluer at least, despite the dust kicked up by the sheer number of people. You’d seen crowds in the Capital Aubrey, but this many people in the open at once? It’s mind-boggling, and apparently the turnout last years was even larger.

The Festival officially commences in roughly three days, and there is still some light left in today. On your first day at Motte-Fallavon you…

Very fun theory! I agree that the Reginate is fighting with the Royalty (Prince, who is king-to-be) over an actual issue of authority than mere "antics". The question then is this: who will our pious knight follow?

The structure of the state as we know it seems to give relief to popular sentiment by marrying their greatest representative, the Church, to the foundations of the monarchy in a very literal manner. If understood as a struggle between the State and Church, the Prince is then attempting something of a noble coup to strengthen central authority at the expense of the Church's. Those nobles who aid him would receive preferential treatment (a la fudai daimyos from Tokugawas) compared to those who do not, but in the long term nobles absolutely benefit from a weaker monarchy feuding with the church. Consider the difference of power between the nobility of France and England, the Sun King who was the State versus the King who had to pacify nobles with legal concessions. This attempted disruption of the power balance by the Prince could very well lead to a civil war made worse by religious overtones. And our knight is a very pious knight.

Shouldn't we stick to being pro-Church if not pro-Reginate, if only to ensure that our family survives the struggle between the two overarching titans? One leg on each faction, so to speak.
>>
Finally caught up with the archives. Love the quest and setting, will need to read up on BCQ sometime.

I know you probably answered this already, but if Emile... suddenly perishes, you restarting the quest with a new protag (remember something about a veteran Knight) or ending it?

Welcome to the party! As for your question, it would depend. I know that's a cop out but I could see it as a natural conclusion or time for a new perspective depending on where things finished off. Anons have also suggested starting up a shekel copper clipper or even as continuing on with a Mikail PoV, though at this point in time that would very much be hard mode.

”It is written!” You hear the powerful voice of Father Towbray clear across the din of the bustling market, a throng of people gathered to listened to this raggedy holy man read from the holy book. The Book of Brothers, Chapter III Verse 29.

The preacher is flanked by his closest followers on either side, one particularly serious looking fellow in a green hood practically shoves a cloth into your hands as you join the crowd. You don’t recognise him from the pilgrims you escorted here, Father Towbray must be making friends. The pamphlets urge against the dangers of cohabitation with the enemy of Man and numerous other vices, calling for pogroms to secure Cantôns border against the ever-present threats of beastfolk, foreigners, snakemen and the dead. The leaflets are etched on scraps of cloth or bark, good paper being prohibitively expensive given the demand in quantity.

”In the House of Magistrate there were many fine statues and paintings that would make kings and beggars alike weep at the beauty of it. For the Magistrate was a lover of the Arts, a patron of all things beautiful and exquisite to the mind and senses. As if the prettiness of his household could outreach the blemished of the cruel and corrupt depredations visited upon the fearful slaves of the City his command.” The man’s fiery oratory has captured your attention, you can feel the passion in his speech and the fire in his eyes even from the back of the crowd. ”Indeed, so covetous was he of wordly possessions that he would often commission fantastic works of art only to have the sculptor or paint strangled so that none else could enjoy their creations.”

”One day a stranger came to the Magistrate’s house, a battered box slung over his ragged desert cloak. The stranger promised a performance unlike any he had seen before, he boldy claimed to the Magisrate ‘I shall demonstrate to you the Universal Art’.

….
‘There is no such thing!’ the Magistrate laughed cruelly, guards and courtiers jeered at the stranger even as the pauper brought into his private audience hall. ‘Everyone knows that Art is a matter of perspective. Will this beggar show us an Art which even the birds and bees will heed? Which even the rocks and sand will shift and respond to?”

” ‘Indeed I shall, Magistrate’ the stranger said as he lifted back his cowl and revealed himself to be none other than the Brother Cain, Rebel of the Empire.” Father Towbray slams his hand against the wooden pedestal, causing the audience to jump. ”Brother Cain cracked open the case upon his back and split the Captain of the Guard in two with his Blade of Anguish. His slaughter was beautiful and terrible to behold, men were awestruck even as they were cut down…”

”The Magisrate cowered before the Brother Cain’s blade crying ‘You deceiver! You have brought no Universal Art here, only murder!’ he wept.”

[1/3]
>>
>>3734318

The crowd is deathly silent in anticipation. You’ve heard this story before, but by the Almighty Father Towbray tells it well.

”As the Blade of Anguish fell the Magistrate heard his killers final words ‘I spoke no word of a lie. The Universal Art is Violence. The Art which can move all things, living or inanimate, man or beast, good or evil.’ Thus spake the Brother Cain!”

There is a roar of approval at Father Towbray’s proselytizing, the Brother Cain has always had a stronger following in Fallavon than Adam for obvious reasons. Clearly the preacher has found a more welcoming crowd here than in his Montbrun homeland. The Sisters of Mercy led by the Superior Ignatius have drawn far less of a crowd, but perhaps a more appreciative one. There healing arts are in much demand for the folk untrusting of the numerous hedge-witches and questionable apothecaries that abound in the festival markets, and the sisters show no hesitation in dirtying their hands. Even as Sister Ignatius speaks to you, she is busy stitching up a ghastly shoulder wound on sullen ranger with a smirched white patch on his shoulder. Apparently a hunting accident, though you haven’t seen arrows that can carve flesh like that. Brother Marcel and a few other Knights Comitas are nearby, saying nothing but sitting watchfully.

”You seem weary, sir knight.” Sister Superior Ignatius says after you explain the situation. ” Please do not pay us any mind, there is still good work aplenty for my sisters and I to do here and word is just getting out of our mission’s presence. Father Towbray is busy too, I assume you’ve heard some of his sermons?”

”I have. The priest has a way with words” You admit that he seems to capture the fiery message of the Brother Cain well. Sister Ignatius smiles, though her focus is mainly on the needle in her patient’s shoulder.

” ‘I have told every such soul this. ‘Make peace with your enemies. Beat your sword into a plough. Raise food. Marry. Have many fat children. Grow old, soft and happy.’ To those stupid enough to ignore this wise advice, to have the option of peace and yet choose this life of violence all the same, I inflict the ultimate punishment. I accept them as my student.’ ” Sister Ignatius finishes patching up the dour huntsman and grants him a blessing, which he awkwardly accepts and gives thanks for before leaving. ”Do you know who said that, Sir Andrei?”

”I would have guessed the Brother Adam, but your tone suggests I would be mistaken.” Besides, after a year as a page in the Knight’s Comitas you know most of Adam’s teachings by rote. And Salve Reginae never spoke a word of the sword. ”Brother Cain then, though the verse… One of the later chapters?”

[3/3]

”Very good, Sir Andrei. It gladdens my heart to see that Romani children are taught their Book of Brothers so well. Brother Cain, Chapter VI Verse 63.” Sister Ignatius smile is not unkind, but there is a sadness to it. ”By the end of the Book of Brothers Cain’s teachings had softened somewhat, as least to my understanding. Wiser minds than I have argued that this is in the main due to his guilt for failing to save his brother at the Siege of Aubrey. I like to think however, that perhaps he had come to see the wisdom in his late brothers philosophy.”

That interpretation is a teaching that would be considered, at best, unorthodox. But you’re hardly going to argue religious theology with a nun of the cloth. Thankfully, Sister Ignatius spares you being forced to dance around the matter as you move onto more mundane matters as she says her sisters can probably do well enough on charity and donations for their extended stay, although their medical supplies will be running low. Brother Marcel has offered to watch over the pilgrims during their stay have your horses, under his personal charge. It does not escape you that at no point have you mentioned where your detour would be taking you, but it can’t be denied fighting ahorse in the forests is a risky prospects for beasts not specifically trained to move over uneven terrain.

I don't know if asking such a thing directly is a good idea. Asking is if he knows Damien though could be a good opening. Like saying we are looking for our brother and describe him and that his last known whereabouts were near here. If he is one of the group he would be more likely to open up if he knew we were related to Damien.

Going to up someone and asking them straight out "hey, are you one of those anti-noble rebels" is unlikely to get a positive response, especially when we ourselves are one of said nobles. At best he'll deny it, at worst we'll be marked for further attention.

”Thank you Brother Marcel, I appreciate it. I shall return ere too long in a few weeks time and continue our pilgrimage.” The holy knight offers only a solemn nod to your gratitude, but you had expected nothing else.
Father Towbray and Sister Ignatius are both agents of the Almighty, though their paths may take them in different directions. It would behove you as an Almighty-fearing man of Romaine to lend these holy folk and their followers every assistance. You insist on having their parties looked well after so far as food and lodging goes, with your coinpurse Sir dan Marc is able to secure acceptable rooming for them in the village at the base of Motte-Fallavon. Your man returns with the expected amount of change, it is small gestures of trust like these that make your following request go over easier.

>Persuade Sir dan Marc and Mikail: Auto-pass

"Sir Neil, while we have not known each other long, your sworn sword means a great deal to me. What little I have seen is of a knight who conducts himself honourably, justly and can hold his own in a fight. I hope to oneday be worthy of your sword. Mikail, you have travelled with me far and I am proud to see you grow from strength to strength. Your bladework is much improved and with time and more study, I believe you will make a fine knight, perhaps even a member of the King's Guard as you earnestly wish.”

Mikail struggles to suppress a beam at your praise while Sir dan Marc’s expression is more serious. He realises you must have had them follow you away from the festival grounds to the treeline for a reason. There is no one in earshot, but you lower your voice all the same.

”I do however now have a problem which I need to face. As this looks to be a fairly dangerous matter, I will not order either of you to come with me BUT I would ask of you two to come with me, freely.”

”Of course we’re coming wiv you, milord.” Your squires confusion is plain on his face. ”But you ent got to ask us to come, it’s our job innit?”

Sometimes you find yourself forgetting how young Mikail is. Or Sir Neil dan Marc for that matter, no boy but still a youth that can’t be more than eighteen summers. You yourself have only a few years more on him, your height giving you a deceptive few more years in appearance. When you speak to them you try to sound like Father, older and wiser than your age. Like you know what you’re doing.

”That warms my heart, Mikail, but you should know that beyond the dangers of the woods my brother likely has raised the ire of foes in the court and I cannot but go to his aid. What worth are such bonds if those of family, friends and comrades are so easily forsaken. We must be true to where we come from and who we are and I am not so little of a man to leave my brother in the lurch.”

”I am with you, sire, of course. I could not call myself a knight were I to choose otherwise.” Sir dan Marc says with due gravity.

”What he said.” Mikail nods, puffin himself up and tilting his chin in a most unpleasant-like manner. ”Besides, Pa would tan me hide if he found you ran off into the woods after fairies or whatnot without me watching your back.”

”It is agreed then. We leave the day after the Festival, which itself is two days from now.” You smile warmly as you slap your arms down on the each of their shoulders. ”Go, make the necessary preparations. And enjoy yourselves while you can, soft beds and easy sleeps will be in short supply for a while after.”

I really want that full-plate armor harness. However, I'll give it up since it can be found in all other markets unlike the unique Griffinhawk which can only be found here.
>>
>>3736774
Couple questions.
By hunting in the forest we about to enter. Can we be accused of poaching?

I'm found of your wealth system. It doesn't really have application in forest where we will have hard time keeping clean and well kept. Will we be able to keap our charisma bonuses from wealth in the forest?

Depends on the game and where you hunted. What the lords of Fallavon lay claim to and what they actually police are two different things.

That will be situational. If you’ve had time to clean yourself up, yes. If you’ve met someone having just come out of a swamp, no.

Yes, that is my understanding.

? Why would you want it without master hawker anyways? That utility is unparalleled and the difference between a 3W and 4W isnt great.
>>
>>3739190
It doesn't appear immediately useful and depending on how it works it'll take a long time to have any real utility (do they come with some already known locations or do we need to take it places for it to return?). Being able to send letters to the City of Purchase is a minor boon imo and the extra wealth may come in handy (ransom, bribes, etc)
>>
>>3739194
Wasnt it changed so that the sending letters thing only came with master hawker? I could be wrong.

>>3739194
Sending of messages only comes with master hawker. Yes, we will have to bring it with us to learn where to goes to send messages but that'll come with time. If we don't pay that one wealth, the hawk wont be able to send messages at all.

Yes I understand that guys, and I don't see it as a particularly useful at this point in time considering where we are going and what we are doing. Especially when you consider that we wont be able to get a message home etc unless we divert our plan and take it there first.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObQnTkmRa_U - Griffinhawk Theme

The Hawker Camrock-i-Hain’s stall stands apart from the more common stalls, an erected tepee that rears above in a spiralling fashion. The old man sits cross-legged at the entrance of the tent, his face is so aged and wrinkled that it looks to be made of leather. He does not shout the value of his wares as you approach like the other merchants, doubtless he knows his goods are unmatched in all the continent. Perhaps the world. “Duine uasal eile a tha den bheachd gu bheil e airidh air? Na bi a ’caoineadh rium ma thogas iad sùilean an duine seo cuideachd.”

“Grandfather says welcome to our store, honoured knight. Have you come to seek one of the Legatus Prionnsan as a companion?” Unlike his milky-eyed grandfather the boy, perhaps six summers old, has disconcertingly different eyes colours. One deep blue and the other startingly yellow.

”I have.” You respond, a cold sweat creeping down your back as you lock eyes with the open tent flap. A rustle of feathers stirs from within, the dark opening beckons you.

“Leig leinn seo fhaighinn thairis leis an uairsin. Tha mi a ’teagamh gum bu toil le mo bhòidhchead am fear seo an dàrna cuid. A bheil fios aig an daimh balbh seo nach reic mi cac dha mura tagh na seabhagan e?” Whatever language the old man speaks, it has no root in the Cathagi dialect of the Old Empire.

”Grandfather says it is important that you understand that the Prionnsan must choose you, not the other way around. We must blindfold you for the ceremony.”

”I was not aware… I understand.” You are blindfolded and led into the tent, which smells of a sickly smoke that makes your tongue dry.

”Remember, stay very still. And do not take the blindfold off until it is time.”

”When will I know if it is time?”

”You will know. And when you know, do not flinch. They will see that as weakness and reject you, or worse.”

You don’t like the sound of ‘or worse’, but the rustle of feathers calls to you. You clamp down on your nerves and step across the threshold.

You are buffeted by a windblast as you step in, a flapping of wings so loud that you’re sure it’s a wayward part of the tent canvas. You can just barely make out the roosts and spiraling tent opening at the top through the threadbare blindfold. Vague shapes, impossibly large and sinister in the dark, peer down at you with the authority of a lord sitting in judgement over a condemned criminal. You breath in deep the smoky air, straightening your shoulders and standing proud. You are an anointed knight of the realm, you will be judged worthy. A chitter and screech sound above you that turns into a chachopny of indignant noise and flapping of wings. And then finally, silence.

A weight settles on your shoulder. You’re reminded of a cat, if that cat was very large and its claws very sharp. You feel the hooked beak brush your blindfold aside a fraction and you find yourself with your left eye staring straight into the cool avian gaze of an imperial Legatus Griffinhawk. It holds your stare steadily, with the casual arrogance of a supreme species.

”Eeeee!!!” Your heart jumps as the Griffinhawk screeches at you in challenge. You know, with a cold certainty you can feel in your gut, that had you flinched in that moment this Prince of Hawks would have taken your eye for the offence. A proud and noble creature that will brook no insult or weakness in his master. In you.

“Uill thèid mo mhilleadh. Tha e air còrdadh ri fear mòr.” The elder chuckles. “Dèan cinnteach gu bheil an duine gad phàigheadh, a bhalaich.”

”Grandfather says this one has chosen you. It is a great honour, once it has selected a companion the Griffinhawk is loyal for life. This one is young, if you care for him properly it will leave for another 20 years.” The old man leaves you with the boy as he explains that your new avian friend has an uncanny memory and ability to interpret instructions. These rare creatures can no longer be found even in the heartland of the Old Empire they served, after its collapse they flourished only here in the untamed forests of north Fallavon. They have a proud and noble lineage, which must be respected if you wish for it to continue to serve you. It will be able to strike targets at your command, hunt and feed itself and also deliver messages to specific locations you have imprinted on it. It can travel enormous distances in a short time, in the old times it was not unheard of for them to even cross the seas in a single stretch.

You do your best to pay attention, but your eyes never leave the beautiful creature resting on your shoulder for a moment. Its wings stretch beyond your entire armspan, and you are not a small man. Like the actual Griffin, an even rarer and savage beast, its hindquarters end in limbs that are reminiscent of a great cat but end in talons every bit as wicked and sharp as the ones on its forequarters.

>Maid Sinclair Hidden Favour Trait REVEALED
>LADY HAWK: Griffin Hawks are a remarkably intelligent species well known for their ability to follow instructions. However, the degree to which your avian companion seems to understand is remarkable. Almost eerily so. You may give your Griffin Hawk more complex instructions than normal.

Having asked around for the services of a forest guide, you narrow the options down to two potential candidates based on the recommendations of the pilgrims. Craig of Lowgrove is the man who handed you a pamphlet earlier, bearing the green hood and cloak typical of foresters and trappers but with a disheveled look about him. With a worn shortbow and rusty blade it is clear he has seen better days, enough to turn any man to the more hard-line branch of the Faith.

The other candidate goes by the name of Jack Jehova, the man with the white patch on his shoulder who was having his ‘hunting accident’ injury tended to by the Sisters of Mercy. You find his casual insolence annoying, but his name is recognised by anyone you ask with a reputation as an excellent tracker. Armed with bow, spear and hardened leather he strikes you as not just a hunter but someone who can handle himself in a fight should push come to shove.

(1) Select Forest Guide

>The new addition to Father Towbray’s followers comes highly recommended by the priest. The pastor may put more emphasis on the man’s zeal than his pathfinding skills, but the man has indicated an interest in seeking your employ as a permanent archer if you should find him employable. [Hire Craig of Lowgrove]

>The man is impertinent to the point of outright insult but he’s a well-known name around these parts and the recent winner of Lord Duncan’s archery contest. Despite pocketing your coin he insists he’s only offering to act as your guide because he owes the Sisters of Mercy a favour. [Hire Jack Jehova]
(2) Name your Legatus Griffinhawk
With a lineage stretching back to the great Cathagi Empire of Old, these magnificent birds are royalty among avians. A Griffinhawk is to a normal bird-of-prey like a Wasteland Mustang is to a Warhorse. While steeds are usually named after great generals and statesmen of days gone by, these majestic feathered creatures are invariably named in the style of a virtue and object of nature (eg: Audacious Wind, Patient Flame or Merciful River).

>Write-in If it’s close I will call a vote-roll with the top candidates.

(3) Just as an aside. Are you expecting Sir dan Marc or Mikail to accompany you on the Blue Lantern Vigil? It does not go against tradition to have your aides and sworn men to hand when you go on that particular vigil with the Order of Names, although they will obviously miss out on the festivities.

He is much more experienced at pathfinding and tracking plus he can actually fight.

Unsure for which one to vote right now, but I suspect that maybe Jack Jehova is or was a blue jay sympathizer, maybe even a wyte, which in itself could be useful. He is the high risk, high reward. Skilled with bow and tracking.

Given the nature of what we're about to go into with our brother, a man of more flexible faith is better than someone who would see us turned in for heresy - or treason

Besides, despite his insolence, Jack clearly honours his debts.

> Name your Hawk

Make the offer to them, but as this is an act of faith I feel we shouldn't force the issue.

I thought it would be a nice touch having it "Anglecize" into something religious if we call it Joan in Emile's language.

And what with their exceptional intelligence, having Griffenhawks represent "Wisdom" was thematically fitting too.

>>3742859

Why would someone like that want to be our Archer in the first place?

Remember, Emile has been played as religiously flexible - note the recent runes shitshow.

Beast-niggers not welcome here hur-dur-hur

Clearly you're just a racist Trump supporting Brexiter from The Ukraine.

That was sarcasm.

But more importantly, do we want to bring a Zealot to Carthage? Especially given our tendency to *compromise*, and our brother's possible involvement with the Blue Jays?

A viper bites because that's it's nature. And a zealot's nature is to censure sooooo many of our planned activities.

Lookin' at votes, it seems like Craig the Fag is gonna be our next man, but just remember that I warned y'all.

Him and hannibal don't get along. Joan teases Hannibal, as all women of wisdom are wont to do, but in a gentle way. Of course our Griffenhawk is a woman, our bonus is called Ladyhawk.

Of course, we could also always redeem him by showing integrity and honour, if a kind he thought to be a mere cynical facade of the nobility when he threw himself into religion as an ideal to die for after seeing so many live for only themselves.

>Courageous Sky

Courageous Sky. ’Speur Misneachail’ in the old local dialect. ’Audax Caelo’ in the tongue of the Old Empire. The wizened master hawker nods approvingly. It is a good name, a strong name. One worthy of the stunning creature that now serves you.

Imprinting the location of Motte-Fallavon on the Griffinhawk’s mind is surprisingly simple. Courageous Sky listens to your with a cocked head that indicates a rapt attention and understanding of your instructions. Its aptitude is demonstrated when it delivers a practice message from one side of the camp to Sir dan Marc at the gates of the Motte itself, singling him out without hesitation.

The utility of having such a messenger at your disposal is… well you’re only beginning to grasp the extent of the possibilities. On top of that, their size and strength means you can deliver messages entire rather than in short script. No wonder these expensive beasts were so highly valued by Lords and Generals of days gone by.

You decide to go with Father Towbray’s recommendation. His man appears down on his luck and eager for honest employment. Eager enough not to baulk at the prospect of heading north to the deep woodlands.

”Thank ye for this opportunity, milord Andrei.” Craig of Lowgrove pushes back his green hood bows several times, showing more obeisance than is strictly necessary for a knight. ”I won’t let ye down, ye have me word on that.”

Over the next few days you and your companions take full advantage of the warms beds, hearty meals and easy sleep that is afforded to you. Sir dan Marc is eager to join you on the Blue Lantern vigil, while Mikail suppresses his regret on missing out on the festivities to remain by your side. Since your talk the two have been wary of strangers and careful not to betray the purpose behind their arrangements.

Sir dan Marc is certain that he exhibited total discretion in acquiring ranger gear, including quality bedrolls and waterproof hooded cloaks among other necessities suggested by your new hire.

Monegan, 12th Day of Ovrimun, 883 A.C.E. – Nightfall (Commencement of the Motte-Fallavon Festival)

The lantern bearers are predominantly from the Order of Names. Despite being one of the Holy Orders it has the largest composition of commoners among their number, with rank being primarily awarded based on their tracking skill and bounties claimed. Few of their number are anointed knights, most being distinguished foresters and rangers of some renown. They are often the first line of defence against incursions by the Foe, as well as being merciless in their persecution of criminal activity in the otherwise lawless reaches of the land.

The Royal Huntsman, despite being neither royal nor much of a hunter in appearance, is a man of severe countenance by the name of Eric dan Donsendale. Although there are other Fallavon knights of a pious persuasion in attendance, you are in fact the only foreign knight here. He is singularly unimpressed by your request to join the Blue Lantern vigil but relents without any good reason to refuse you.

”I don’t have any Wispdust to spare. You’ll be wanting this then.” Along with a lantern for each of your companions he hands you a short bar of wood with leather wrapped around it. ”Put this in your mouth when we set out.”

”Helps with the seizures. So you don’t bite your own tongue off.” He shrugs at your puzzled look. ”Sometimes the visions can be… a little intense for greenbloods.”

The sound of the festivities beginning in earnest begins as night falls and the azure flower fields take on an eerily bright glow. You join the band of lantern bearers setting out beyond the picket lines of the festival towards…

>All are rather bleak

The main battle took place on Fallavon's Fields where the festival is held, where mankind eventually emerged victorious. Prior to that, numerous one-sided engagements occured to the north as the main host of the wild swept aside the human vanguard and advance forces.

The symbolic purpose of the Blue Lantern Vigil is to lead those lost souls back to the Fallavon Fields where they will join their triumphant brethren. How literal this is, well... some very powerful magic was in play during those mythical years.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQu22qIlErU - Spectres in the Fog

Your party of a half-dozen souls moves in total silence northwards. The warm glow of the blue lanterns is comforting against the pervading darkness all around you. But against the haunting sounds of sinister ambiance of the night forest, the feeble light source is not nearly as comforting as the blade by your side.

You can see things, odd shapes and low lights flittering between the trees. You’re a long way away from any of the other Blue Lantern parties, it should be impossible to still be able to see them through the treeline.

The grounds becomes less grassy and more rocky as you near the abandoned quarry, the site of one of the many brave but ultimately futile last stands against the foe. You wouldn’t be stumbling so much if you can see your damn feet through the fog that has seeped onto the trail.

”Stay close, Mikail.” You tell your squire cautiously. “The mist is getting thicker.”

The response is faint, and not a little nervous. ”…what mist, milord?”

”What do you mean what…” You turn back to tell Mikail to stop dragging his feet only to see no one there. And none of the Order of Names Rangers either. You’re alone. You tighten your grip on your spear, scant comfort that it is.

….spear?

”HELP!” The voice sounds nothing like your squire’s but your reaction is instant. You sprint across the dried creekbed, your sandals slapping on the rocky undergrowth. You clamber over a boulder to see two barbarians, naked as the day they were born, poke and prod a wounded soldier wearing the same iron linothorax as yourself.

”Ksee, mishk varna koshki!” The cruel barking laughter of the beastman is familiar to you, as is the simple axe of black iron. Crude and heavy, but deadly all the same.

”Fuirich! Tha mi ag iarraidh a chluasan.” The beastman’s comrade is a wild-haired brute covered in blue symbols, nonetheless human for all that. He grabs the wounded soldier by the hair and brings his primitive hatchet up with lethal intent.

Total. If you have many short engagements in a short time you're going to run out of luck eventually. As we get to the stage where there will be more and more re-rolls to spend part of the tactics will include whether to take a small hit in the current combat so you can save a re-roll for when you -really- need it later or spending one on a good roll to make it a lethal roll.

Speaking of which, I forgot to include that totem's bonus. We can assume it has been waved off by the local church as a harmless trinket.

“Hi!” You shout as you leap from the boulder into the unwashed barbarian. The Wildman gives a whoop of pain as your drive the spear tip through his gut and out the other side. A killing blow, but the frenzied brute still claws at your face with his dying breaths even as his beastman companion charges from the side.

You kick the dying barbarian off the end of your spear and send him sprawling into the dirt. He struggles to rise and avenge his own death, but he is done. Snorting in rage, the beastman’s attack is clumsy and easy to avoid.

You sidestep the first blow then lift your under his armpit on the second. The creature’s blow is confounded the loss of swing momentum and your spear licks out into its foreleg eliciting a pained howl from the beast.

Although your form is perfect, you underestimated the beastman’s brute strength. With a grunt the creature picks you up by your armour and sends you flying several feet to land sprawling on your back, your spear squelching out of the beastman’s leg with you.

You land badly, twisting something. This isn’t… this is just a dream, isn’t it… it shouldn’t hurt… Nonetheless the pain feels all to real, you have to grit your teeth and lean on your spear to make it up in time for the beastman’s next attack.

Not to say I told you so (because I didn’t) but in that situation going with the Guarded stance may have been more fruitful, vis-à-vis avoid the exchange of blows damage. Even if you had just gone with Balanced your opponent would be dead by now. I have noticed you guys have been very heavily leaning to Belligerent in many of our combat encounters and this is a prime instance of where it has cost you. Consider other stances in the future, especially where you don't NEED the extra damage to finish off an opponent or their companion.

If that's your take on it, sure. My view is that it favors aggression where you enjoy high DC but low AV. The more the DC evens out, and the higher your AV becomes with equipment and stance, the more the system slips into favouring a defensive long game.

That's just my take on it though.

>2 Success (Guarded)

>Split-nose is Slain!
>You are Victorious!

You jab at the beastman wildly, trying to buy yourself some space. The creature snorts in derision and grabs the spear handle, chopping the tip off before your eyes with a swing of its axe. Strong indeed but slow, and stupid.

Before it can adjust itself you’ve drawn your shortblade and slid it into the creature’s side. The blade goes in easily, you twist the handle and yank it up with a sharp tug as dark blood and offal pool around your sandals. The pained shock of your opponent expression is soon replaced by you dull sightless gaze as it slumps to the ground.

You try in vain to wipe the blood away from your eyes with your forearm, but the damn thing is blinded in that side. Hopefully that will go away after a wash. The beastman put up a Pit of a fight, you’ll give it that.

”Thank you, comrade. I thought I was done for. You’re from the other scouting party?”
You shake at the wounded soldier’s question. You have a vague sensation that you shouldn’t be able to understand him and yet, as such things often are in dreams, you do. As you help the man up you notice that he continues to speak as if you had responded. ”No? Well good to see you anyway. They call me Jason, Primaris Peltast of the 2nd Emancipation Cohort. By the Old God and the New, we’re fucked. They’re everywhere, damn it.”

[1/2]
>>
>>3746501

[2/2]

There’s nothing to replace your broken weapon among the bodies here, though you do pause at the corpse of a man dressed in what looks remarkably like full-plate armour. You around look in vain for a spear to replace yours before you comrade speaks up.

”Here, take mine. It’s wasted on me like this. That’s one of Legatus Cain’s chosen men.” Handing you his own spear, your comrade eyes the corpse warily. The man’s flesh appears to have, well… melted. ”Wearing that new steel plate too, from the looks of it. For all the good it did him.”

The stratiote sprawled on their side next to the armored cadaver doesn’t have a mark on him, but judging from his horribly wide eyes and mouth open in a silent scream this man died in tremendous agony.

”We should get back to the quarry, the Lokhagos should know we couldn’t find a way out.” Despite his determination it appears that your fellow soldier can barely stand, after limping a few steps you have to sling his arm around your shoulder. He abandons his plumed helmet, less weight to carry. ”A lot of good it did me, bastards nearly too my ear.”

There souls have been trap here on the day they die for who knows how many years, until retrieve by someone. Of-course we have a try to save at least one more soul.
>>
>>3748602
I fail to see the of-course relation there, especially considering a single encounter already fucked our shit up (down) to wounded status
>>
>>3748689
We just gota play it safe with gurded stance.
>>3748602
Kinda weird that they dont do this eveyr month to try to get all the souls, unless they onyl come out to play on this night.
>>
>>3748756
Likely its related to the anniversary of the battles, the magic that went into them and all the souls catch in between.
>>
So. What if we only save the soul if we survive and lead them out? If we go back to the group and get slaughtered does this man we saved stay trapped there? If we go to rescue more and die in the process, is it all for naught?

The idealist pick is to wake up now. Seems counterintuitive unless we are risking this soul by staying in the dream.
>>
>>3748778
>>3748756
It is an annual event, and in the early days of the Order of Names it was in fact their primary purpose. Hundreds years ago you couldn’t so much as step away from the Fallavon Fields without a lost soul begging you for aid. But now that is rarer and rarer. Sometimes entire years go by without a single vision, let alone soul recovery. If indeed these are ‘souls’ in the theological sense. It’s somewhat problematic when compared to church teachings.

>>3748840
The most important aspect of leading a soul to rest is to recover some artefact where they fell. For Jason, who in reality died with the rest of his scouts, that will be his Peltast Helmet.

>>3748566
It is most heavily pronounced in Romaine where the influence (both hostile and trade) of Cathagi remained prevalent. At least in the architecture, according to Father.
>>
>>3748944
That's fucking terrifying for the few (many?) souls still trap there.
>>
>>3748944
Do folks die on these spirit quests?

Rather concerned at how Mikail will be doing.
>>
>>3748981
It’s very rare for a vision to be of a fatal intensity, but it is not unheard of. There are also those who simply go missing during the vigil, but again very rare and possibly not related to the visions.
>>
>>3748944
so the helmet he just discarded. If we don't wake up now we could risk not finding the helmet again?

>The sounds of desperate fighting near at hand by the riverbed is unmistakable, could it be the other scouting party? Leave no man behind. [Hearty]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0KyhRkgThc - Fae Youngblood Theme

You will save as many faithful souls from this godforsaken forest as you can. Having made your decision you find yourself, as is the way of dreams, at the site of the end of a small melee located at the bed of a minor river.

You have never seen the mystical Fae before, and at first glance you had found yourself almost disappointed that they did not live up to the wild stories you had heard. The unarmoured figure facing off against three opponents appears for the most part humanoid, if too long in limb and lithe in figure to pass off as an average human male. His face, if these things even differentiate genders, is hidden by a simple unadorned wooden mask. Any notion that this might simply be an oddly proportioned human wearing a mask is banished the moment it leaps into action.

The speed the Fae moves with is blinding, ducking under the swing of the warrior in the dull red full-plate armour with a contemptuous ease and leaping over the thrust of another hoplite in a mocking cartwheel before spinning a knife with a flick of the wrist that splits open a stratiote’s throat in a manner that is almost delicate.

The remaining hoplite falters in his attack, adopting a hurried defensive posture as the Fae Youngblood leaps with inhuman agility across the metres distance to place a palm on the hoplite’s shield. "AWAUI.".The unmistakable radiance of enigmatic runes spins around the hand and, with shocking impetus, the hoplite is flung into the trunk of the tree behind him with lethal momentum. The results are much the same as if he had thrown himself from the castle walls.

All these lethal languid movements achieved in a matter of moments. A part of your mind, blissfully detached from the horrific consequences of natural law being treated as a plaything, notes that this Fae is by far a more fearsome opponent than anything you have faced in your life.

Throwing our spear + audacious allows us a good chance to wound the Fae right away, enough for us to fight cautiously and even disengage if necessary.

>2 Damage Inflicted!
>Root-Marries-Stone-in-the-High-Places is Injured!

The armoured warrior stands his ground as the Fae leaps towards with daggers outstretched.

”Comrade! Drop!” You shout as you hurl your spear with deadly precision. To his credit the warrior does not hesitate sinking to his knees as if suddenly deciding to offer a prayer, the speartip hurtling over his head straight into the path of his oncoming Fae opponent.

Your target displays an astonishing feat of acrobatics, twisting mid-air to avoid the throw as best it can. It does him, her, it little good as the spear takes them full in the right arm and they land awkwardly on the ground, shearing the spear shaft with the other dagger as they flip themselves up.

”God wills it!” Roars your newfound companion, leaping into the attack to land the killimg blow before the Fae assassin can recover its footing.

No cocky stances in the next round! We have wounded status and no companion to save us this time. We sustain one damage point and it's over.
>>
>Death’s Door AV Saved!
>Your companion survives their moment of heroism!
>The Progenitor is wounded!

If the Fae is sorely wounded, it gives little indication of it. It leaps over the wide swing of the armoured warrior and ducks neatly under your eager attack, and is suddenly inside your guard. They catch the inside of your shield with a calculated backwards stab, shearing off several fingers with a savage swipe.
Even as the pain takes a moment to register the dagger is gliding towards your remaining good eye.
”Not this one, fiend!” The armoured warrior shouts, making a wild grab at the Fae’s wrist. ”Not today!”
It is perhaps surprise alone that spares the life of your companion in that instant. The man full-bodied drags and throws the Fae away from you, who lands daintily and readies itself for another attacker. In the entire combat it has not so much as spoken or grunted in pain, but you get the distinct impression that the creature is mocking you.

4 = Guarded - Exchange of Blows does not inflict or sustain damage.

3 = Balanced - AV and Damage remain unchanged. BLADEMASTER: Re-roll stance control for this round and the next.

2 = Belligerent - Exchange of Blows does not inflict damage; +1 Damage to Foe if any unsaved damaged is inflicted.

1 = Audacious - Re-roll Successful AV Doubles; Each point of unsaved damage to the Knight is doubled.

Noice! Fae Magic can't check those doubles. And the cautious stance is useless against it as well.

His Death's Door can be only used once-per-day.

Unfortunately not, the Fae Youngblood barely survives due to burning their re-roll whilst the Progenitor succumbs to his wounds.

As we have seen before (with the Wodenaki) burning a re-roll permanently can avoid an untimely death. I will award a small DC bonus in the tracking roll though, since it was so close fought.

> The Progenitor is SLAIN!

It takes every iota of your strength to force your screaming muscles to respond as the Fae launches himself into a blistering attack. You and your armoured friend both stumble back under its onslaught, doing your best to bring your shield up to no avail. Even then you know you are dead, the icy sting of the dagger slicing up through your guts killing you as surely as a blade to the heart.

But a dagger through the heart would not have left you with the last few breaths of life, raging against the world and your killer as only a half-mad dreamer can. Your teeth bite into the elongated ear of the Far with a savage crunch as you wrench your neck back and both like a dog with a bone. Hardly knightly, but you have been known to see red sometimes. You figure dying is a permissible lapse. The pained yelp elicited from your killer is so satisfying it is almost worth the searing pain of the daggers slicing further through your intestines.
The Fae assassin literally tears itself away from your maw and flees, clutching the side of its head. You spit out half a bloody ear with a grin, for a moment every bit a savage as the barbarian you killed earlier.

”Cain on the Cross that was Magnificent! Have you thought about joining the… Oh no…” Your companion’s elated expression dissipates as they notice your fatal wounds. You collapse to the floor, the Chosen casting away his gauntlets at a nearby oak sapling and futilely attempting to stop the bleeding. ”Stay with me! Stay with me, comrade! We didn’t storm our way out of the depths of the Fighting Arenas to die in this godforsaken forest amongst these godforsaken barbarians and their godforsaken tree-shagging pixie masters! Damn it, soldier don’t you die on…”

>Shaken by Visions: Although you do not experience visions with the same clarity as you did just now, for some days the trauma of experiencing your forefathers demise firsthand leaves you with troubled dreams. Gain Tired (-5DC) trait in the next combat encounter.

”Hold him, HOLD HIM! Cain on the Cross, I ain’t ever seen siezures this bad afore.”

”Shut up! Sir Andrei can take it… Look, He’s waking up!” The voice of a young boy. Your squire?

”What did you see? Was there a battle? Men? Did they leave anything behind in the visions? Where?”

”Give him a moment, for pity’s sake!” The speaker you recognise as Sir dan Marc barks harshly at the hooded figured pestering you with questions.

”No!” A gruff voice in response, one of the Order of Names rangers. ”He’ll forget soon, that’s the way of these things. He has to tell us what he remembers now!”

That's all from me tonight gents. I think the tracking rolls tomorrow (depending on your choice) will be a fitting place to conclude the vigil and the thread together.

I will assume you have all your tracking bonuses/re-rolls from equipment/companions to hand or at least fetched for you.

It's honestly hilarious to watch the complaints swing back and forth, you can never keep everyone happy. Only a few threads ago people were bitching that we're being too cautious and that it would be more in character to go charging after monsters and now it is the polar opposite, we're too greedy and reckless
>>
>>3767250
Oh but how boring would this quest be if everyone agreed on everything?
>>
>>3767258
True, if the Quest Thread General has taught me anything it is that if a quest doesn't have screaming, it is not a good quest
>>
>>3767262
At least we shitpost and argue in good faith and not just mindlessly ree at each other.
>>
>>3767250
To be honest its about time our character traits got us in trouble.
>>
>>3767488
Not to give Forgotten any ideas on punishing us but yeah I am totally ok with suffering consequences for being reckless and overreaching what is realistic for us. Just like the courtly intrigue stuff that will at some point fuck us I'm sure
>>
>>3765657
if we had used Audacious here >>3765409

like I originally wanted to here >>3763837
would have done 4 degrees of damage and taken it immediately out of the fight, and if we didn't roll as well as we did there and immediately had to burn both rerolls to get the same degree of success, at the least the Fae would still be wounded badly right away.

And then we could have switched to cautious next round after we lost the spear.

Instead, we wasted the chance to hit hard right away with the spear and then went balls in after we lost our AV bonus.

It wasn't that we were too cautious or too audacious, it was that we didn't immediately capitalize on our advantage with chucking the spear, and then people went balls deep after losing most of our AV.

Remember, rerolls are nice for saving against death, but they're even nicer for putting the enemy out immediately.

There was no way we were going to fight a third battle, so what were we saving them for.

Tactics. They're important. Y'all didn't learn a thing from your first death, and you got used to letting the dice carry you through.

>You struggle to recollect both visions. It will be harder to accurately recall the whereabouts of both encounters, but you have to try…. [TRAUMATIZED]

Kniggas, *you died*.
>>
yfw this makes Cain and Abel cataphracts
>>
>>3767506
I feel like it was more to do with the fact that it wasn't actually Emile that was in danger. The only real risk (that we knew of) was failing to do well in this vigil which yeah, would have really sucked but it wasn't the risk of true death. This lead to us playing around a little more with the combat system than we usually do. Like Forgotten said at one point, we really do tend to stick to a particular method of fighting, using the same stances etc over and over again.

You're not wrong in that we need to be more tactical and careful about our choices some times but I think in this case it was ok to go a little wild, even if it meant not coming out as well as we could have

”Θεός στον ουρανό, πέθανα!” You scream, clutching your stomach and thrashing as the last vestiges of the vision leave you. You have no idea what you’re saying. Have you gone mad? ”Αkόμα μπορώ να αισθανθώ να πιάσω το δόρυ ...”

”Milord?!” Mikail’s concerned voice and Sir dan Marc’s firm hand on your shoulder, helping you up. These familiars bring you back to your senses.

”Speaking in tongues. Sometimes the visions will do that to a man.” The Order of Names ranger clucks his tongue. ”An ill omen.”

”I am! I…am? It...was... it has passed. I think. I am myself again.”You shake your head, the memory and pain of your own death setting in your hands an unknightly tremble. Despite that, you struggle to recall everything you saw. But it’s like tightening your hold on a fistful of sand, the harder you grip the more seems to slip away. Jessen? Jakob? He left a helmet by a boulder in the trees. And the other one, gauntlets. A river somewhere nearby? ”Follow me. While I can still remember…”

Actually the Cathagi cavalry is woeful, rely on light horsemen from the desert tribes. The superior horseflesh and zeal of Canton is its main advantage over their former masters.

To answer your question, the only equipment of that design would be archaic ornamental sets held by certain extremely old families that can trace their lineage back to the first mounted warriors of the Emancipation Cohorts. Even your ancient line has no such relic of their own, lost with their ancestral home during the Fall of Ardenne.

Tomorrow night's update will be the last of the thread, and a good place to leave off before the dangerous expedition north (hopefully the thread number is not a sign of your luck).

Unfortunately I am extremely busy now with a bit of juggling IRL plans so the date for the next thread will have to be confirmed later on twitter and /qtg/.

Needless to say, the Order of Names will be extremely happy with you as will a certain other noble house. You did good, dream-death notwithstanding.

Rarer and rarer as the years pass. Other parties this year may also have recovered a relic, but not two. Obviously, in the immediate decades following the battle it was common for hundreds of relics to be recovered with each vigil, or even for visions to occur outside of the night in question.
