You're working at an Aquarium which has a unique attraction. A real life mermaid. Other aquariums do get them from time to time. But at least around your area this is the only people be able to see for miles.

You're lugging a pail of fish towards the water when you see a group of thuggish looking teenagers throwing their garbage at the mermaid sitting near the shore.

The mermaid seems confused and gets hit by a lot of the garbage. Coating her pink hair in gunk. Hurting her causing the mermaid to cry out in pain.

1) Chastise the boys and lecture them

2) Tell them to stop harassing the animals, and that you're just doing your job.

3) Attack them

4) Write-in

You set the pail down and walk over to the kids.

"Hey get away from the mermaid. Have some respect for the animals."

One of the kids up there sporting a neon floral shirt smirks at you,

"Relax dude, we're just having fun. This is a place for entertainment, and we came to be entertained."

The other young guys behind him laugh as well. Their cruel expressions trigger a deep level of revulsion in you.

"Just get out of here before I have to call security."

"Pfft, whatever dude."

He turns around to leave. The others follow after him. You watch as him and his gang slowly walk away. Then you turn your attention to the mermaid.
She's covered in some kind of icky muck.. What is this motor oil? How the hell did those kids have something like that?

Looking at her, you suddenly realize that you're not actually supposed to get this close to her. You've heard some pretty scary tales of mermaids luring unsuspecting people in before dragging them underwater to drown.

You shiver imagining that wouldn't be a very pleasant way to go. You get an idea though.. You go fetch the pail of fish stuffs. This gunk looks terrible. Something you wouldn't feed to a dog. But you notice her smelling it and inching closer to you. You lead her away from the edge of the water.

You toss some fish-stuffs on the ground. She cups it with her hands and rather messily eats it. You grab a nearby handbrush and try to clean off some of the gunk..

She keeps eating the fish stuffs hungrily. But her eyes do linger on you here and there.

You decide to talk to it,

"You know, if those kids start throwing stuff at you. You don't have to sit there and take it.. Just dive back into the water."

She looks up from her meal in what you can presume to be mild confusion before returning to eat.

You groan,

"Why the hell am I even talking to you? You can't understand me at all can you?"

She stares at you with an innocent doe eyed expression. Is she reacting to your voice? You decide to ask,

"Hey, can you understand me?"

She tilts her head to the side a bit, but makes no verbal response. You sigh.

"So.. You can't understand."

She pauses for a moment seeming to be thinking about something. Before reaching down into the mess of fish stuffs, and offering a cupped hand full of fish stuffs to you.

1) Accept it, and eat some of it

2) Tell her no thank you and reject it

3) Ignore her and just keep trying to clean the crap off her.

You decide it'd probably be rude to reject her offer.. You grab the fish gunk, saying as best of a heartfelt 'thanks' as you can feasibly muster before shoving a handful of fish gunk into your pants. Ugh.. This is gonna smell so bad later..

She observes carefully, and then smiles nicely at you. She claps her hands together and makes a pleased expression. Like a child after you tell them you're gonna buy them some cotton candy at the fairground.

You come closer to her and continue to gently groom the gunk off her. She doesn't fuss much, and remains still while you groom her there. Seeing the upper half of her being human. It's hard not to feel some kind of.. Oddly intimate thing happening here.

You shake your head trying to snap back to reality. You're just an aquarium cleaner, cleaning one of the animals that got dirty. She's just like a dolphin, or an Orca. Just another aquatic tourist attraction for people to gawk at.

One of the other handlers comes down into the pen. Your co-worker Glenda. An older, muscly tomboy type with a backwards ballcap.

"Hey sport, I gotta go home soon and babysit one of my neighbors kids. Someone puked near the octopus display. You can clean that up for me right?"

"Sure thing," you said. The mermaid almost winced at the sound. Right, her ears were tuned for lower frequencies that propagated easily through water. A human-pitched voice loud enough to carry probably sounded like nails on a chalkboard to her.

"Sorry," you muttered. No, you will not feel strange for apologizing to a fish. You stepped on a cat's tail once when you were carrying boxes and couldn't see. You about died that day, and cats... well, cats are assholes.

"Just let me finish cleaning this mess, okay?" This time you were careful to moderate your town. Thankfully, the mermaid didn't seem to mind. Maybe she was just used to it by now? "You'll owe me one, right?"

Glenda waved a brawny hand generally through the air. "Yeah yeah yeah, what..." she froze when she saw the gunk plastered all over the poor mermaid's hair and back. "Aw hell," she grunted. "Poor thing."

"Yeah," you said. You gently pulled another piece of garbage out of the mermaid's hair. Did it count as hair? It was thicker and coarser than you were used to. Maybe it wasn't hair at all. You knew so little about mermaids, you'd have to look it up when you had the time. "Caught some kids--"

"Oh," Glenda scowled. "I know the type. Threw 'em out on their asses."

You smiled. Glenda could shout and bully like nobody's business. She could hit the midpoint between angry drill sergeant and disappointed mom with uncanny ease. "Well.. I'm off then. See ya."

You waved and went back to cleaning the Mermaid.

You settled down onto your haunches by the edge of her tank. The aquarium was closing soon, so you could take as much time as you wanted doing the nightly cleaning without anyone disturbing you. Normally you tried to get everything done quickly so you could go home to some vidya and post-work relaxation. But not today. There was something oddly therapeutic about cleaning up the mermaid. Her long hair--you decided you might as well call it hair--was soft and slick between your fingers.

She leaned forward, hauling more of her body out of the water until her breasts kissed your knees. Were they breasts? They certainly looked like breasts. Maybe you should find her something to wear? Was that weird? Nobody made the gorillas wear pants, right?

Anyway, she leaned forward and rested her head in the furrow left between your thighs. Her big golden eyes looked up at you and... squinted. Of course, her lenses were adapted to see through water. Looking through air must be difficult for her. Her long tail swished through the water, and as you cleaned she started to... purr?

You talked to her about.. nothing. Your day, things you'd seen. You'd gotten to witness a baby's first time seeing a manta ray the other day. That was an experience you'd never forget, even second hand. Mantas were such majestic creatures, and the one at your aquarium had a famously docile temper.

Her nose twitched, and her gaze drifted south. She craned her neck, exploring along your pants until... Until she found the pocket where you'd stashed the food you'd given her. She slunk back, looking up at you with a profoundly hurt expression.

>Tell the truth. You just couldn't bring yourself to eat it.
>Okay okay, she caught you. See if you can choke it down now.

Doctor: Would you care to explain why you thought eating raw fish, prepared for consumption by another species, known to contain at least two substances harmful to humans... was by any means a good idea?
ZooKeeper: The mermaid would have been sad if I didn't.
Doctor: Understandable, have a nice stay.
>>

>>3781058
Can't turn back now.
>Okay okay, she caught you. See if you can choke it down now.
>>
Okay. Whelp, she caught you. Thankfully the stuff doesn't have anything overtly toxic in it. A few bites won't kill you and... well... her big gold eyes look so hurt! You fished the lump of food from your pocket and took a tiny bite. That was a bad move, you could taste all the foul flavors as it slid down your throat like a soggy slice of toast. You forced yourself to keep a straight face, and even flashed her a thumbs up.

Her purr intensified and she settled back down onto your lap, still watching you with what you interpreted as a contented smile. This time you took a big gulp of her food and threw it back like a shot. It still tasted foul, but at least you didn't taste it for so long. "Ah," you said, voice hoarse and breath stinking. "Nice... very nice."

Her purring oscillated. A giggle! Mermaids giggle! Her long tail swished in the water and she smiled at you. She was about as clean as she could get now. She slid off your lap and splashed back into the pool. She rolled belly-up and waved at you before arcing back down into the water and darting behind one of the decorative rocks.

You stood up from the pool and tried to dry yourself off. It wasn't really working, but you'd learned on the first day not to bring clothes you really cared about to work. The rest of your shift went by in a blur. You finished your tasks on autopilot, still thinking about that fish in the tank.

When you got home you made yourself a plate of chicken and drenched it in every spice you could find to try and get the foul taste out. You settled down to eat in front of your computer and decided to search...

>Mermaid history
Mermaids are found throughout the world--with the notable and thus far inexplicable exception of the Mediterranean--however until the 17th century they were considered a myth by Europeans. Limited visibility in the storm-racked Atlantic compared with the natural skittishness of European mermaids made them nearly impossible to sight. Mermaids dwelling in the Caribbean or Indian oceans were far more friendly, and the clear, gentle seas made them easier to spot. However the immense distance sailors would need to travel before making reliable sightings made the reports easy to dismiss as the daydreams of horny sailors who'd gone without female companionship for too long.

Mermaids have traditionally not been fished for meat. Even the dumbest is too intelligent to be fooled by any but the most determined fisherman, and at that point the effort required isn't worth the megre amount of meat delivered. Ever since their discovery was confirmed by science, there have been attempts to train them for military purposes (most famously the US NAVY's GILLGIRL project of the 1960's which attempted to train Pacific Orca matrons to place espionage gear on Soviet underwater telegraph lines.) Thus far there have been no confirmed reports of any collaboration between national militaries and mermaids.

>Mermaid Anatomy
"Mermaid" is a broad category for a number of morphological similar but anatomically distinct species. Mermaids as a rule possess two arms with human-like hands, but from the "waist" down their bodies flare out into something resembling that of a fish or whale. For convenience, many mermaids are described by analogy to the conventional fish they most resemble (orca matrons, shark maidens, etc.)

Some mermaids are true mammals, complete with lungs that require them to surface for air and simple flukes aligned in the horizontal plane. Others (like the common green-scaled Mermaid at the aquarium) are more fishlike with greater collection of fins and a tail aligned in the vertical plane. Fish-like mermaids breath through a complex set of gills and air-sacks that allow them to spend limited time (between minutes an hours depending on the species) above water with no ill effects.

The intelligence of mermaids is hotly debated. Some, such as Sharkmaidens, are renowned for both their intelligence and stupidity. Others like the Orcas are more enigmatic, while the Green-scale you have on display is considered middle of the road, if exceptionally personable and docile.

>Mermaid diet
Green-scale mermaids are omnivorous, but prefer meat when available. Along with fish they happily consume marine mammals and the occasional seabird.

>what would you like to know more about?
Social behaviors?
>>
>>3781255
But the hair name trivia, QM! What about my precious, deeply important trivia!? :V

No, but the only things I can really think of atm (besides >supporting social behaviors) are:
>You mentioned whale mermaids- are those actually the size of whales, or are the tails just whale-shaped? Are there smaller mermaids based on smaller fish?
>How common are mermaids compared to back when they were considered a myth?

I've got to get up early tomorrow, so goodnight. Thanks again for hijacking the thread, new-captain!
>>
>>3781275
>Social Behaviors of Mermaids
Mermaid social structure varies wildly with species. Some varieties of whale-matron live solitary lives once they're old enough to leave their mothers, while others (namely the infamous north american tiger-backed sharkmaiden) have been observed actively colluding with each other for seemingly no other reason than compromising the results of any scientific study made on or near them.

The Green-scale you have at the aquarium is known as a semi-social species. If placed in a confined space with another green-scale they get along without competition and will help to preen each other in areas they can't reach themselves. However they have no problem living alone and are perfectly content to swim solitary. When a green-scales are docile and friendly by nature, rarely lashing out unless seriously threatened or hunting. Like many mermaids, they purr when content, but only when around someone they consider a friend.

When swimming in groups, Green-scale mermaids occasionally share food. Food is usually only given to very young or very weak members of the group, however.

>Mermaid Hair
All mermaids, even those not similar to marine mammals posses incredibly thick hair that minimizes drag compared to mammalian hair despite its often great length. Their hair can be of very complex construction, with multiple layers of under-coats to maximize insulation when diving deep, or a simple mating display depending on species.

>Mermaid size
Mermaids come in a variety of sizes. Some like the Indonesian murrshark (pic related) are only a few inches long, while others like the famous Orcamatrons of the pacific northwest can reach 20-25 feet in length and 12,000 pounds in weight. Green-scales like you have at the aquarium are smaller, usually around eight feet. (Though considering how much of that is slender tail you end up with a girl-part that looks proportionate to a 5'5 girl.)
>>
>>3781300
>Mermaid hair (side note)
There is not yet a scientific consensus about what a mermaid's hair should be called. Some scientists insist "hair" is a close enough term and adding a secondary term would complicate matters, while others insist a mermaid's head covering is distinct enough to be considered its own thing.

>>3781289
>How common are mermaids compared to back when they were considered a myth?
Mermaids are fairly common, though fairly difficult to capture. Given their natural habitat underwater, mermaids and humans rarely interact except under controlled conditions, giving the impression that mermaids are very rare. The overall population has grown since the 17th century, though it's difficult to determine how much superior maritime technology is influencing the numbers. Sightings are still rarest around europe, as mermaids of that region tend to live offshore and spend more time below the surface. When they do come close, the gray choppy water makes them harder to spot.

>Work out

You logged off from your research session and decided to get in some reps before bed. You weren't in great shape, but you weren't a slob either. You were stuck in the awkward middle ground of "kinda fit" that even the English Language with her expansive vocabulary couldn't truly define. But whatever your level of fitness, it didn't seem to be enough for your new fishy friend. You hammered out a few sets of push-ups and crunches before bed and then collapsed into your pillow.

You did the same routine in the morning before grabbing a breakfast that you considered healthy-enough. When you walked in to work, you made sure to pass the submerged window into the mermaid's tank. She was already up, swimming lazy laps around her tank and corralling other fish seemingly out of boredom. You notice her squint when you walked near the glass. She must've recognized your uniform, but it took her a second to realize who you were.

She smiled to you before swimming back behind a few fronds of kelp with her fish... did they count as friends or pets? You decided to question that later. In the mean time you had to check on the petting-tank. It was open-topped and kids could come and say high to the more docile animals, but that meant lots of clean-up and maintenance.

Still, the day passed easily enough, and soon it was time for lunch.

>Eat in the break room. See if you can hit up Glenda or one of the divers. They might know more about your new fishy friend.

You decided to eat with the mermaid. Maybe if she saw you eating your own food she wouldn't feel the need to give you any of her disgusting fish-muck. And... well... she was really pretty to look at. Not in a 'hot girl' way, but the way her fins flowed through the water was gorgeous. She was just calming to watch swim around her tank. And... okay, maybe a little bit of a 'hot girl' way too, but you weren't going to admit that to anyone yet.

You settled down by the edge of the tank and took a big bite into the apple you'd brought. It didn't take long for your fishy friend to make an appearance. She circled around from the far corner of the tank and swam up to you. Her dorsal fin broached the surface first, followed by her head and slender torso. She swam right up to the edge of the tank and squinted at you. She smiled when she noticed you take a bite and swam still closer. She hauled herself partly out of the water, crossing her arms on the edge of the tank and forming a protective wall around her naked breasts.

You decided you might as well call them breasts for now, even if you tried not to look at them. It was just... odd seeing something that so closely resembled a woman's bare chest without any covering. And to see the woman (or fish woman) attached to it so blithely displaying them for all to see. Though, you had to admit, her chest was quite nice as chests go. You suppose it helped when bouyancy was the mother of all support bras.

"Hey," you waved at her, taking a big bite of your apple to prove you had food.

In the short term? Mostly just more fluff with the mermaid. For me, whether that fluff takes the form of romance or making her the cutest, best trained aquarium exhibit to ever exist depends on how the intelligence thing shakes out, but either could make for a good story.

We haven't really gotten to anything longer term than that yet, so from there it's up to you.
If you wanted to start some drama with our bosses, or with other aquarium workers? That could be fun.
If you wanted to show that the secret Mermaid Empire was on the verge of succeeding in their world-conquering plans? I'd be down for that.
If you wanted to just keep coasting on fluffy feelings and mermaid interaction for a while? Count me in.

Right now there's a trifecta of a cute mermaid being cute, neat worldbuilding, and some mermaid pics to draw people in. As long as you don't go completely off the rails, you should be good for a while.
(That said, we're already halfway down the tenth page, so this should probably get a new thread soon.)
