Previously on 999 Quest:

You, and all of your gathered allies came together to take on the strange and spidery godlike entity that had taken Blue and Red and had seemingly bound them into its own mass. Despite your magic and skill and power, the abomination would not cease in its assault against you, even when pushed and lessened from its original seat of superiority.

Finally, having cut your way into the bulk of the entity, you pushed yourself down into its very essence to find Blue and Red, and find them you did, being paraded about by the nightmarish entity, which wanted you to join them, a puppet for it and nothing else.

Now here you are, with Blue and Red by your side, glaring up at the piercing and ever-changing darkness and its singular eye, shifting and twitching every few moments. It's a pretty nasty sight, all said.

How do you plan on starting things off?

>With an attack of cleansing fire and ice!
You, Red and Blue raise your arms up into the air, as the hideous umbral star glares down at you, motes of green light gathering in front of its unblinking eye, focused and refined until they are litttemore than a thin needle of light.

The three of you weave the cold bite of frost and storm among you, letting fire dance upon ice and ice interlock with Fire, creating a strange configuration in the air between the three of you.

And just as that mass of light and storm comes together, you carry it upwards, propelling it rapidly just as the star above lets loose the thin needle of light that it had gathered. You can only watch mystified as the two Marvel's of spellwork come together and collide, exploding and rippling outward in a vast collection of lights and noise.

Beneath that display however, you find that the star, the heart of this nightmare, has moved. You don't know where, but you can feel it blinking about all around you. Preparing an9ther attack, no doubt.

What do you do?

After all this Fifthist shit gets resolved, I more or less intend for things to just revolve around exploring the city (which needs a proper name, thinking on it) and meeting new folk, with maybe some sidequests here and there, if you want to take them up. It will also work in ranking up some of the assorted skills and gaining new ones.

>Try and strike at it with Song of Fury
You clutch at your Dream Trinket, take a deep breath, and proceed to let energy flow through you. Lines of power criss-cross through your body as you focus on what you want to do-

-At least, up until Blue steps in front of you.

"[I think I get what you want to do, Orange. Mind if I take the lead here?]"

Huh? It's rare that he actually wants to be at the front of whatever you want to do. But you nod to him either way.

"[Good. Now stand back a little bit. You too, Red.]" he turns back to face the twisted core of the darkness, body flaring up with a song yet unspoken, as he clutches a dream trinket of his own. "[This may get a little bit messy.]"

Well, you aren't sure about that but-

-!!

A radiant well of energy tears through Blue, spiralling upwards before blossoming out, flaring into a hundred little tendrils of light, which dart around for a little bit, before suddenly pointing forwards, and rapidly moving towards the black star, which has actually re-emerged, the strength of the light having illuminated its position.

The mass of darkness burns with a kind of alien hatred that you can scarcely fathom, but as the rays of light speed towards it, it seems to pull backwards somewhat, channeling walls of wailing static to try and shield itself from Blue's onslaught.

Unfortunately for it, Blue isn't having any of that, and as the light strands touch the static walls, the blockade quickly starts to dissolve into more gleaming tendrils, which rap around and ensnare the star, holding it in place and digging into it, drawing a strange noise not like any roar or scream you've ever heard.

And as the magic wraps tightly around the demon, something connects in your head and for the briefest of moments, you can SEE the magic that Blue used to weave this all together.

>A new trait has attained realization within you! Observant (F): You're fairly intrigued by some of what goes around you. Not to any major degree, but you notice some stuff

That feeling fades shortly after it comes, but you feel as though you've just learned something in that instant of crossing the spheres of awareness and perception.

And as the strands of light bind the darkness, a pretty cool song kicks in.

You watch as with only a mere moment of hesitation, Red leaps into the fray, body growing suddenly and spontaneously, with him nearly quadrupling in size. Flames rise along his body as he gives a sound almost akin to a roar of pent-up rage and frustration, before the flames swarm around him and come together in a huge wave if fire, slamming into the immense dark shape before you, and spreading all along it.

As he is doing that, you time the time to build your own purifying power, letting it flow through you and concentrate in a central point in your body.

In a burst of speed, you close the gap between you and the thing, spread your arms out, and give a might yell.

"BLOFBLE!"

Light erupts out of your central mass, blossoming all over the eye and burning right into it, tearing through the darkness and causing cracks to spread along the points of the twisted star.

>Purifying Explosion (D+)!
>Purifying Explosion (D++)! Through the focusing of your light, you may release it all in a massive burst to tear through your foes. The exhaustion probably isn't worth it under most circumstances. But it's so much fun!

You fall back a bit, being safely caught by Red, who moves a limb to catch your descending form. Blinking and shaking your head around a bit, you look up only to catch Blue's chains starting to dissolve as the anomaly starts to do something, judging by the orb of static now surrounding it.

You push yourself up, moving out of Red's grip as you start down your foe as it gathers power. You turn over to Red then, and outline something to him.

"Blorble blorb, blorble-blorble-blorble-blorb."

Red makes an absolutely confused and somewhat surprised reaction at your plan.

"[Y-You want m-me to do what!? ]" he shouts, the surprise leaking into his voice.

"Blorble-blorbitty-blorb-blorb." you reply. Its really simple in actuality. You don't know why hes getting so up in arms over it.

He sighs and slumps forward slightly, his large body sagging, even as he draws his eyes up to the steadily building sphere of static.

"[T-this is g-goddamn crazy. But I'll do it, and I'll tell Blue what he needs to do.]"

You smile at that. Friends till the end, indeed.

>Your bond with Red has grown (D+)! Whilst you certainly don't know everything about him, you feel as if you've definitely grown closer to him after all this time. Wonder what his interests actually are?

Red breathes out a bit, and then raises his arms, waves of light trailing through his body and pushing outwards, spreading and snaking through the air lazily as he builds up his power.

Meanwhile, you channel your own internal power, building up energy and purifying power, before letting it burst out of you, rocketing forward as sleek jet of snow and frost, spreading out against the sphere of steadily building static, freezing and solidifying it, and quieting the hiss of the noise.

Just as you do, Red's chains snap forward, twisting and bending through the air until they completely encircle the orb, pressing into it and running grooves along the edges of the field of snow you've put around it.

Just as that happens, Blue seems to have finished processing the information, something between shock and a mere second of hesitation crossing his face. He turns to you and levels a little glare at you, but it's half-hearted and the grin he gives shows his genuine thoughts on the matter.

As he turns back to the anomaly, he pushes himself back a bit, and raises a single limb, holding it in the air, and letting motes of light build up along the length of his fist.

What is he doing here-

-HOLY!

A burst of light and fire BLAZES forward as he raises his fists and charges forward, bringing it against the sphere of ice and static now encasing the entity, slamming forward hard enough to crack, splinter and subsequently shatter both the ice-sphere and the orb of static, and sending the entity reeling back, even as Red's chains still bind it.

He doesn#t stop there, though and he continues to rapidly smash blazing fists against it, cracking them against its eye and spines, and dodgiign around the retaliatory attacks it fires at him.

>Summon up a storm to blind it!
Weaving power and frost into yourself, you decide to go with an old classic. You aren't sure how it will hold up now, but you'll put all you have into it all the same.

As Blue levels another crackling punch against the mass of the entity, you can visibly see the blaze about him starting to decline. Sure, he isn't slowing down much, if at all, but the power behind his blows is definitely petering out.

Guess that's where you come in.

Channeling all the might that you can muster, you push your power out into the space above and between you. And with that, you can down the rain.

Or more accurately, a downpour, judging by the force of it all.

>Rain-Call (F++)!
>Rain-Call (F+++)!

The rain comes down hard and heavy, falling all around despite the area around you *clearly* being no place to accommodate any kind of rainfall, but the power doesn't care, and the rain keeps on coming anyway. But that's not all you do, and you may on the pressure with a Snow-Storm, a wave of purifying power and snow mixing into the rain to form a churning maelstrom that sweeps in and tears down upon the anomaly, over and over and over.

>Snow-Storm (E+)!

You note that Blue has already pulled himself back, the last embers of his fire trailing behind him as he moves back towards you. And looking back at the entity, you can see it isn't doing so hot itself.

Jagged cracks lay across its frost-coated spines, that twitch and bend disconcerntingly as they try to break free from their chilly imprisonment. Its eye, fat and swollen and bloodshot with mucus and puss, has been almost entirely encased in the ice, which is being battered away by snow and rain time and time again.

Its movements will likely be much slower now than they were before, but you can't let your guard down yet. The battle hasn't been won.

You move over to Blue, checking up on him and his current condition after everything that he just did. And overall, he isn't looking so hot.

His body looks battered in some places with riplling lines that spark with leftover energy moving all along his frame, as if channeling his power in such a manner had actually ended up injuring him. He actually leans into you a bit when you move to him, his body naturally flowing into yours somewhat.

"[Never...doing that...again...]" he huffs, breathing slightly ragged. You can definitely understand why he wouldn't want to go that far a second time.

Looking over at Red, you can see that using his Chains did something to him too, but he doesn't show it quite as much as Blue. Still, he definitely looks pretty run-down from his efforts at holding the entity in place for so long.

Red and Blue can take care of themselves for now. Right now, you have to take advantage of the entity's vulnerable state to del as much damage as you possibly can.

You feel bad for leaving them like this, but you can already feel the familiar touch of understanding drifting across your mind from the both of them as you move out.

>>Use Purifying Touch to try and burn away at it
You speed upwards towards the entity, which doesn't direct its eye to you exactly, but you can feel its attention falling upon you all the same. The already nonsensical space around you takes on an even more horrific bent, twisting into spiralling jaws and layers upon layers of writhing corpses, swarming up and over each other in a mess of pain and bliss.

You push through the changes in reality, and the hissing sting of awful black smoke spreading out and trying to swallow you. And with a single arm, you slam forward, against the mass of darkness, radiant flames bursting out from your touch and spreading all along the bulk of the infernal star.

A hiss and a groan, and then several sharp pops later, and the star explodes into leaping flames. The flames and sparks spread all along the mass of the entity, tearing and breaking it apart with every burst. You can see the eye make numerous popping noises as something violently ruptures behind it.

Sure, this comes with the unfortunate effect of removing Red's chains, but man, it's worth it.

>Purifying Touch (B++)!

The thing let's loose the very first actual noise you've heard it make all fight: a low, warbling note of distorted voices layered all over each other to the point you can't distinguish any of them.

Dark spines tear through the air, twisting and bending and shaping into awkward and weird configurations, spreading out and then breaking apart into a number of black cubes. The cubes dance in the air around you, and start to pulsate with a bizarre inner light.

The cubes pulsate and hum in the air around you, an oddly discordant tune ringing out from them. Like a broken music box.

Motes of tiny particulate drift and cluster around the cubes, which now blink with a bizarre internal light, before they suddenly expand, fracturing and rapidly engulfing the areas around them with spheres of utter blackness.

Except, even that's not right. It's something else. Something darker than the space between the stars, and so much colder. You realize it just as your blessed blade cuts through that absolute void for but a split second. And you realize that there's truly nothing there. The darkness from the cubes is a complete non-space, and when your blade cut through it in your ark, you felt it completely loosen from your grip, disappearing into the literally errors in the world before you.

And then everything snaps back, like waking from a dream. And you realize that this is all true.

>Observant (F+)!

The nothingness doesn't stop in its spread, and continue he's to bear down on you, pushing you, Red and Blue back as it continues to eat away at everything. And you notice that the entity is nowhere to be seen. It's likely to have moved to try and blindside you whilst your attention is diverted.

>>Try and push back the encroaching nothingness with as much force as you can
You raise your arms and allow light to flow through you, with as much power as you can. It twists and burns and pulsates, and turns into a sea of light that rockets out of your body, blazing into a wall between you and the nothingness.

You stand there, between oblivion and your friends, and you push it back.

The darkness, the non-space before you, struggles against you and strikes against your barrier over and over and over. And yet you keep pushing with that wall of astral fire, even as it tries to strike against you.

To the side, you catch the entity's hateful eye emerge from the chaos around you, a spear of twisted light focused to a pinprick in front of it, before it lets it go, and a rush of power and reality-shattering force bears down on you.

"[NOT TODAY, FUCKER!]"

With a great shout and rush, you watch as Blue and Red move to your side and erect an opposing barrier of their own, purifying light flaring up into a wall of fire to hold against the oncoming attack.

The wall of flame buckles as the ray hits, but it does not break.

"[Orange, think you can try to purify that shit you're holding over there?]" Blue grunts, staring ahead and trying to maintain himself as he holds his own barrier up. "[I've got a plan, but I NEED to know that you can at least TRY to purify that stuff.]"

>Attempt to do that.
You not at Blue, even if he can't see the motion (it's still osmething you need to do, after all). You turn to the field of fire in front of you, holding back a mass of raw oblivion on the other side, and you wonder how you're going to actually purify this mess.

Then, and idea comes to you.

You push your arms further into the wall of purifying light, and you allow them to spread into it, diffusing into the fire and allowing you to view it all around. You then start to mold it around the points where you've spread yourself.

Tiny little whirls start to dot the wall, as thry start pushing up and out, allowing tiny rivulets of the darkness on the other side to pass through, but instead of letting it run free, you have the light wrap around it and twist with it. Bands of light and darkness twirl in the air about you. And soon enough, there's no darkness anymore. Just light.

You don't know how long you've been going at this at this point, but it had to 've a few minutes at the least. Nevertheless, Red and Blue don't make any move to shout at you to speed up, only grunting in exertion as they force themselves to keep on struggling. You'd normally be surprised and questioning at Blue being so quiet, but you figure it's a bad time right now.

You finally allow the last mote of darkness (that you can detect) to string into the air. Now, all you need to do is set them into place.

"Blorble. Blorble-blorb."

"[What?]" the response they gave you is unsurprisingly incredulous.

"Blorble-blorb-blorb."

"[Ah, f-fuck it.]" Red shrugs, wincing only a tiny bit as the entity bears down on them with another beam. "[D-Do whatever you want, O-Orange. It's do or die time, a-anyhow.]"

"[Red, you can't be serious.]"

"[Does this look like a joking situation to you?]"

"[Well-]" That's enough of that, you think.

Tuning out the peanit gallery, you raise the band's of light into the air, and start to interlock them. You can only hope this goes through as well as you want it to.

(cont)
>>

>(cont)

The interlocked bands wave around, like a snake coiling up in anticipation of striking at its prey, flashes of purifying light trail along its length as it weaves through the air, bathing the three of you in a warm glow.

And then, you compel it to *strike*.

It slides up into the air, over the erect wall of fire that Blue and Red has created, and through it, you watch as the entity furiously unleashes blast after blast, deep curtains of smoke following each expression of force as they come.

The band of light moves smoothly past each and every one, the waves of dark energy entirely missing their target time and time again. Even as the entity starts pouring more and more force into every attack, the woven string of light and fire just keeps on dodging past each of them and fucking between their paths as it comes ever closer to its target.

The entity let's loose a low, warbling sound, that crescendo's into a deafening boom as a red-green blast of raw searing paingorceagonyanguish comes done upon you.

The blast tears on down, blazing reality into a heaping wreck as it does so and crashes against the barrier that Red and Blue erected prior, almost causing the entire thing to collapse in on itself as it does. There's a straining noise as the two grunt and try to hold against the onslaught. But they only need to hold on for a little while, B ecaue it has been done.

The thread of light you had woven, smoothly and quickly trials along the bare edges of the star's burst of energy, and in one quick and painfully sharp movement, flies right on upwards to embed itself into the center of the entity's eye.

A moment passes, completely still and silent save for the wheezing and gasping sounds of the fading attack.

And then the anomaly *screams*.

The sound is akin to an earthquake, the chattering of thousands of spiders, the collapse of a star, and countless other things. Its eye violently ruptures, leaking puss, black ooze and insectoid limbs in a grim display. In the now opened centre of the star, you see a shimmering point of twisting red and green.

Is that the real heart of this nightmare?

You don't get the chance to ponder much more than that, as the entity's spines jut forward and it emits another howling shriek.

'This is it then', you think as you drop your barrier at the same time as your two counterparts. A final race to the finish. Been a long time coming, hasn't it.

It's time to win this, once and for all. It's time to go. As a team.

Onward!
