The Lighthouse War is over, but conflict still continues.

With Erusea's defeat at the hands of the Osean Federation and the International United Nations, the imperial nation has splintered into a confusing mess of separatists, freedom fighters, warlords, rogue military factions, and those seeking to profit from the chaos. Worse, Erusea's many automated drone factories still remain intact, waiting for new masters to come to claim them.

The Usean continent remains in crisis, and it's up to a new generation of pilots to face this next generation threat...

You are MILLY, the "Red Tail", a Belkan Air Force pilot fighting for the IUN!

You have to admit, this little cruise was way more exciting than you had expected with the presence of Sofia aboard. You still weren't 100% on the details, but apparently this Sapinese pilot had quite the history with Bandit, of that much you were sure.

Still, you had to admit was a bit amusing seeing Bandit doing his best to try and avoid Sofia as much as possible. Even Vicky and Misono were a bit intrigued, too, given they didn't know too much about Bandit, either.

However, it wasn't all fun and games. As the Andersen was sailing along Usea's southern coast, the risk of attack by pirates or local warlords was always a very real possibility, so the carrier's captain, Captain Miller, had ordered for a CAP flight to be in the air at all times. This meant your squadron had to rotate with the others on patrol duties.

This time, though...

Today, it was Raven Squadron's turn to pull CAP duty. Pretty routine stuff, so you didn't really have anything to complain about.

Currently, there wasn't too much going on right now. Both of your squadron's wing pairs were flying together directly above the Andersen and her escort group, which was basically whatever was left of the Osean expeditionary fleet Osea was able to slap together. There was only a single destroyer and cruiser, with a handful of frigates and even a few minesweepers pressed into service. Just as ragtag as the air complement, you guess.

Even worse, you didn't have AWACS support available, at least not until you reached Fort Grays on the east coast. Any early warning you could get, you would have to rely on your own radar or the Andersen's.

"Nothing on radar or visuals." Bandit reports from his lead position. "There's a stormfront to our south, though. It's a bit concerning."

"I would be a good place for enemies to hide." Vicky adds.

"But wouldn't an attack more likely originate from the coast?" Misono wonders. "That is where most of the conflict is taking place."

Yeah, given all the instability going on around Usea, just about anybody had reason to go out of their way to take out an IUN naval force.

"We'll split into wing pairs." Bandit says gruffly. "One group patrols the coast while the other checks out the storm."

"T-that makes sense." Vicky agrees.

"Red, which one do you want to take?" Bandit asks.

Huh well... the coast would be easier to fly over and the visibility was better. However, it was more likely to run into shit like hidden SAM sites or something like that.

The storm, obviously, was going to be tough to fly in and would have poor visibility, meaning you'd likely end up in a knife fight if you encounter the enemy. Though, with your Su-30, you'd actually specialize in knife fights...

"I'll take the storm!" You laugh.

"Again?" Vicky groans.

"Oh come on, you got super great luck in storms!" You remind her. "Don't worry about!"

"This is such a bad ideaaaaa." Vicky sighs.

"Right, me and Knives will check out the coast, then." Bandit replies. "Stay safe."

"Heh, you know me, boss!" You reply confidently as you bank your Su-30 south, the storm clouds filling up your canopy.

Hm, if you go in at high altitude, you be able to get the height advantage in any encounter, and you could always dive deeper into the storm as a form of escape. However, you'd have zero visibility of the ocean surface. If there were any surface threats down there, you'd be hard pressed to find them.

Your Su-30 gets shaken heavily from the turbulence as it enters the clouds, but you manage to barely maintain control of your craft, keeping it level despite the high winds.

However, you lose track of Vicky in the clouds, and the atmospheric interference is doing much good for your radar, either. You couldn't get a fix on Vicky's location, but you were getting brief, intermittent contacts in the clouds ahead and below you, but you couldn't tell if it was an actual contact or just an artifact from the storm.

"Swordfish? Swordfish! Can you hear me!?" You call through the radio.

No answer but static.

So, yeah. Things could be better. But not by much.

Unfortunately, you didn't have the luxury to worry about Vicky at the moment. You nose down to investigate the contacts, trying to keep your Su-30 flying straight through the harsh, constantly shifting winds. These contacts were low... very low. Either these were surface contacts, or planes flying below the worst of the weather. You'd only find out once you broke the cloud cover...

You almost miss it, but a chance flash of lightning lets you catch sight of of an... odd shape in the water. Black and angular, it didn't look like any ship you were used to seeing. Even this close, your radar was barely even picking them up. Some kind of stealth ship?

Another flash of lightning, and your eye catches at least four more of the stealth ships skulking through the water. They seemed to be having trouble navigating the rough seas, but were slowly and surely making their way towards the IUN fleet.

You key your radio again, but are again met with static. Whether it was some kind of jamming or the storm, you weren't too sure, but you couldn't let this unknown fleet continue unmolested.

Damn, this was something you had to call in, even if you had to leave the storm to do so. You hit afterburners and boost north to get into proper radio range.

All the while, you keep an eye on your rear aspect, but your radar doesn't pick up any contacts or missiles locks coming from behind.

Finally, as the clouds begin to break up, the white noise on your radio starts go clear up.

"Andersen, heads up! We've got unknown contacts in the storm bearing down on the fleet! A fleet of stealth boats or something, not sure what else may be in there!'

"Roger that, we're scrambling additional fighters." The carrier's flight controller replies. "We have no friendlies or civilian shipping to the south so you are weapons free on any contacts. We'll task an additional squadron to back you up."

That would either be Orpheus squadron, or Sofia's squadron. Erm... Flamenco Squadron, right? You knew Orpheus were pretty good in the strike role, even if they were Ustian and had a rivalry with you. Sofia's squadron, though, was a bit more of an unknown factor to you.

"Ohoho, looks like we'll be your backup, Red Tail!" Sofia's smooth and sensual voice fills your speakers. On your HUD, you see her Rafale take off from the Andersen, tagged as VIXEN.

Oh boy, you wonder how she got THAT nickname.

All in all, Sofia's squadron seemed to number six Rafales in total. Enough for three wing pairs.

"Come along, boys. It's time to dance~." Sofia chuckles as her squadron links up with you. "Ah, little Red, where's your wingmate?"

"Lost her in the storm." You admit. "She's probably still in there somewhere."

"Well don't you worry, me and my boys can handle the enemy fleet. You worry about finding your wingmate!" Sofia suggests, her Rafale pulling up alongside you.

You can't help but feel Sofia's gaze was falling upon you, as if wondering what you would do next.

Thankfully, you find Vicky quickly enough. Or more accurately, you sorta stumble right into the middle of an aerial skirmish. You could immediately see Vicky's Gripen tangling with a pair of F-18s. Looks like it was the enemy's own CAP. Guess Vicky had drawn their attention which was why you were able to stumble on the stealth fleet without getting jumped.

"Swordfish! Do you read me?" You ask.

"R-Red! Heeeelp!" Vicky wails, her voice fuzzy and broken up by static. Even this close, your radios weren't working all that well.

Thankfully, you had fallen in directly behind the F-18s trailing Vicky, and they haven't quite realized you were there yet. One was actively tailing Vicky, trying to get a bead on her while the second was hanging back, no doubt to intercept Vicky if she managed to give his wingmate the slip.

Your first instinct was to shoot the F-18 going for Vicky since it was the most direct threat, but then you'd be showing your back to his buddy, or worse, ignoring him would give him the opportunity to escape.

"Help me out here, Swordfish!" You yell as you jink and juke from side to side to try and shake off the F-18's aim. Fortunately for you, it looked like your opponent was trying to get a missile lock rather than going for guns.

This buys you the precious seconds you need for Vicky to break formation from you and loop around. The second F-18 is too focused sticking on your tail to notice Vicky sliding in behind him,and a burst of cannon fire means it's all over as the stricken plane tumbles out of the sky, disappearing into the storm clouds as its engine are aflame.

"Great shot, Swordfish!" You say happily.

"That's why I hate storms!" Vicky whines, her Gripen returning to formation with you.

"Sure thing, Swordfish. Sure then." You chuckle as you key your radio to raise Sofia. However, almost as expected, there's no reply. Just more static. You're almost certain this wasn't just a trick of the storm.

You keep your eyes focused and peeled at the roiling clouds around you. Every flash of lightning being a possible giveaway to your own or the enemy's position.

However, another bolt of lightning streaks across your canopy, and for a split second, you can see a silhouette of a plane zip by through the clouds.

"Swordfish, did you catch that?" You ask.

"Y-yeah! There's definitely something up here!" Vicky replies. "It looked like one plane, though!"

A single plane? Either that plane was part of a force that had already tangled with Flamenco Squadron, or it was a one plane flight, which mean...

Well.

You suspicion is immediately confirmed when there's another flash of lightning, showing a very familiar black F-16V flying right at you head on.

And there you see it, End's signature F-16V flying right at you head on. Did they follow you here? Or was whoever they were working for hounding the IUN fleet? Whatever the case, the two of you were basically on a collision course and mutually destructive head on run.

You know with your speed and direction, there wasn't really any way to avoid the head on encounter. At least, not without making yourself vulnerable.

There was, however, Vicky. She could stay in formation with you and provide her own firepower, increasing the chances of shooting down End. However, that was assuming End could find a way to outmaneuver you. Even worse, End may have backup. You remember in your last encounter that End was running with a squadron, and that may still be the case, their buddies hidden in the storm. Then again, your instincts told you that End was more of a lone wolf...

And it seems your caution has paid off. A pair of F-16Vs burst from the clouds, no doubt attempting to follow END. Seeing Vicky tailing the ace, they immediately hit afterburners, seeking to get in on Vicky's tail.

You fire off two missiles, which begin to close the distance on the F-16Vs. However, in a stroke of bad luck, a bolt of lightning lances through both missiles, frying their guidance systems and causing them to spin off course and explode uselessly.

"Swordfish, watch you back!" You warn.

"I see them!" Vicky yelps.

Thankfully, your missile locks are enough to spook the two F-16Vs and break off their attack run, splitting off into separate directions to thwart attempts at pursuit.

Vicky erring on the side of caution, also breaks off her attack run at the same time, allowing End to slip away into the storm clouds. With that damage to their single tail fin, you were fairly certain they would take the chance to disengage.

You still had a visual on the other two F-16Vs, though. They looked to still be willing to put up a fight.

"I know! I know!" Vicky replies, frustration clear in her voice. Seemed like she really wanted to get a shot in at End, too.

You take a quick stock of the current situation. One of the F-16Vs climbed up high while the other dove down to shake off the missile locks. The one down low as in a more vulnerable position, but if you went after him, you'd leave Vicky having to deal with the troublesome F-16V up high. While you didn't doubt Vicky's ability to handle herself, you were still having second thoughts sending her after the more difficult target.

"Swordfish, you go low and I'll take high!" You announce.

"Got it! Engaging!" Vicky's Gripen goes into a dive after the fleeing F-16V.

You meanwhile put your Su-30 into a powerclimb after the F-16V up high, driving through clouds and rain. You were quickly closing the distance, but the F-16V was beginning to catch on to your pursuit and was turning to engage. You see the twin flares of missiles being launched. A snap fire on his part, either hoping he'll get a lucky hit or force you to break off your pursuit.

You grit your teeth as you hit your countermeasures, your Su-30 expelling streams of flares and chaff in an effort to throw off the missile's aim.

Thankfully, both missiles fly past your plane, failing to directly impact. Unfortunately, though, they explode just after passing, possibly having been set off by the countermeasures. Your Su-30 vibrates rapidly as shrapnel bounces off and punches into its fuselage, but you're still airworthy enough to keep your guns trained on your target...

Your aim is straight and true, a stream of tracers punching directly into the F-16V's cockpit and nose, shattering the front section. The stricken plane spirals out of control and topples into the storm clouds and below. Moments later, Vicky's Gripen rises up, taking position next to you.

"Red! Are you okay?" Vicky asks in a panic. "Y-your plane looks completely shot up!"

"It's just some shrapnel damage, it's no big deal." You assure her, even though you were hearing ominous whistling sounds from the high winds passing over the various holes in your Su-30.

Grunting, you fall back on your training and do your best to regain left, throttling up and using a combination of your engines and gravity to get your Su-30 properly aligned and level again, though by the time you managed that, you've dropped well below the clouds.

"No, that's all." You say simply, opting not to mention End's presence for now.

"Hmm, all right, then!" Sofia laughs. "Then let's get back to the carrier before your other wing falls off!"

And with that, you and Vicky follow Sofia's lead back to the IUN fleet, where you immediately see something is up. The ships were all sailing much faster, and you could see a number of distant columns of black smoke rising from the shore. Was there some kind of attack from land, as well?

"Red, it's about time you showed up." Bandit speaks out. You look up to see him and Misono still holding a defensive patrol pattern above the fleet. "It looks like you've had to deal with your own enemy force."

"Yeah, but we took care of 'em." You reply. "It was a piece of cake!"

"Then get landed and get your plane repaired ASAP." Bandit instructs. "We don't now when we might be attacked again."

You decide to let Bandit and Sofia bicker among themselves and make a beeline for the Andersen to land. Not much point to staying airborne any longer than you had to, especially with a damaged bird.

Upon landing and heading back down into the hangar deck, though, the first thing you're met with is Mead's angry gaze.

Think we can soften the blow if we tell her that we ran into an ace in the clouds?

"Hey, um, sorry about getting the plane a little busted up." You say apologetically to Mead as you hop out of the cockpit. "Some things kinda happened, and well, you know how it is."

"Yeah, I know when someone breaks a wing when they know it's already damaged." Mead's eyebrow twitches. "I don't mind if you get the odd hit or two from the enemy, but wrecking your own bird for no reason is the sort of shit that doesn't fly by me. You do that again, and I'll throw your ass off this boat myself. Clear?"

"Crystal." You gulp.

"Good, now get the hell outta here, I got a plane to fix." Mead grumbles as she storms past you.

You feel like you dodged a bullet this time.

"She's so scary!" Vicky whispers.

>Yeah, well, she has a good reason to be.
>Mechanics are all always like that.

"Mechanics are all always like that." You shrug as you move to get some distance between you and Mead. "Never too happy about their planes getting beat up."

"Yeah, I guess." Vicky nods.

"Hey giiiiirls~!"

Both you and Vicky are suddenly attacked from behind as Sofia swiftly appears between you two, wrapping her arms around the both of you and holding you two close to her slender body.

"How about a few rounds on me? As a sign of appreciation!" Sofia smiles brightly.

You look at Vicky, both of you knowing that despite the question, you probably didn't really have much choice in the matter.

"Great! Let's go!' Sofia hums happily without even waiting for an answer.

She's certainly an... interesting woman, you have to admit.

>And that's it for tonight! As always, next thread is next week, so don't miss it!

Maybe the two of them could go for the bunnysuit rather than suits?

You have to wonder if there are any rumors being spread about how Bandit is essentially surrounded by female pilots.
>>

Rumors? There is no such thing as rumors. That sounds like a conspiracy, a Belkan conspiracy.
