In the last session we tried to explain ourselves to our cult and started preparations for our upcoming birthday. After giving Haven a lift to the city of Platania, we set off to meet Nike’s oracle. Her patron was relatively busy at the moment, but she offered an option to hang out with her in Valhalla, poorly named Ceno pantheon’s headquarters, until she deals with the problems. We agreed and found ourselves in a big conference room with a large part of the Pantheon present.

QM ooc notes: Well, the hiatus is finally over and we are resuming Synthetic Gods Quest. I apologize for the late start. This summer was surprisingly busy with endless exams and emergency cramming. On the bright side, I’ve finally graduated with a Bachelor in Organization Management and just this week I got enrolled into my Master’s program. I expect to have partially decreased load from now on and SGQ will continue as it used to before the hiatus.

Due to how much time has passed I am a little bit rusty and I didn’t have much time to wrap up the loose ends. All pastebins currently contain information outdated by at least two threads and I hope to update them all sometime during the next week. I’ve decided to separate inventory into two pastebins as I realized yesterday that it was absolutely unreadable. Now inventory would contain Agatha’s private property while new infrastructure pastebin would contain everything we construct and, at least temporarily, the technologic base.

I’d like to say thank you to all of my players that stayed with me through this hectic time. The wait is finally over, I hope you’ll enjoy the ride.

When Nike’ takes her seat, Elspeth decides to start her speech: “Thank you all for coming. Unfortunately, Samael won’t be joining us today. Since everyone else is accounted for, let’s cut straight to the subject. I’ve collected you for today’s War Council in regards to the recent Ceiling subjugation attempt by Etheans and Holies. While their actions had no direct impact on our holdings, I believe the circumstances are important enough to discuss. Yaw, could you please recap the event?” The conference is mainly in English but pantheon members seem to sometimes slip into Ceno Lingua on accident similarly to bilingual people. You mostly play a role of Nike’s bodyguard of sorts by just standing behind her chair.

As Elspeth sits down, Yawgmoth stands up and touches the table with his index and middle finger on his left hand while touching his temple with his right hand. Moments later a colored semi- transparent projection forms above the table that represents a three-dimensional map of the local region. Current territories of the four countries are highlighted in their respective national colors. After that Yaw removes his fingers from his head and starts:

“Thank you. As everyone here already knows, we are a part of the Foresight Treaty between the four nations. According to the treaty, pantheons of the four nations cooperate to remove existential threats to the humanity so that it might flourish some day in the future even if we are no longer there to guide them. One of the biggest dangers to humanity’s future technological progress are still active post-MAD monitors known as Ceilings. Currently there are no more psi or heat- seeking Ceilings with global reach left, but EM seekers still remain and would hamper development of electronics for thousands of years unless exterminated. In accordance of the treaty, Etheans informed all parties about their intention to eliminate the Ceiling classified as Seraph 7 stationed in highly inclined low orbit as it passes above their territory…”

As he says that the map zooms out more but landmasses don’t render. You expect that is due to the fact that Pantheon simply are unable to map the changed world. The continent you are on is unlike anything you’d be familiar with. It looks like massively sized up volcanic island with a massive circular mountain range in the middle. The crater has a large lake in the middle of it and there is probably a massive waterfall on the northern edge of the mountain range judging by the dip in terrain altitude and rivers.
>>
>>3755409
Yaw continues: “However, they didn’t mention the method of elimination. They didn’t display any capacity for anti- orbital weapons yet so it was assumed that this would be the first demonstration of their system. Today at 3 am twenty-four objects were launched from their territory. From the analysis of the exhaust I can tell that these were solid fueled rockets powered by CL-20 based propellant, a difficult to manufacture and powerful high explosive.”

“…which means they have advanced chemical industry on large scale” ran through your head. Everyone in the room seems mildly concerned as they probably thought the same.

“During ascend the barrage has lost five missiles to mechanical failure, which is not surprising since they didn’t have any test flights or we would know about them. I believe the secrecy of their project until this point is an important aspect of the event.”

He switches the hologram so that it would display the local terrain again. Highlighted icon of the Ceiling is shown to move from north-north-east according to trajectory prediction line and the missiles were launched basically straight upwards intersecting the object’s path. Classical antisatellite missile attack plan.

“During ascend it became apparent that the barrage included two types of missiles. The heavier and larger staged version and a lighter version with higher acceleration. Majority of failures happened during heavy’s staging while lighter missiles burned through their propellant and continued on inertia. About 50 km away from the target larger missiles have overtaken the smaller ones and engaged a potent radar system for terminal guidance which was immediately picked up by the Ceiling.

Heavier missiles adjusted their trajectory through gimballed engines but over half of them was lost to point defense fire. Heavy missile payloads appear to be large quantities of metallic debris and an explosive charge designed to scatter the shrapnel. Ceiling suffered mostly superficial damage."

>>3755410
"At this point the object entered into the firing line of the “Holy Light” which immediately fired. The analysis is not complete, but I believe that Ceiling has suffered significant external damage and its point defense was presumably fried. Object retaliated with its main energy weapon slagging several square kilometers in HL’s general area. Since it is mainly rural, I think civilian casualties are in low thousands. It could have been much, MUCH worse.

After that the light missiles entered in range with their payloads and they deployed a yet unknown type of telekinetic weapon. Ceiling was accelerated by 2 km/s towards Earth and it hit atmosphere around 400 seconds later despite its attempts to stabilize orbit. The debris impacted somewhere far to the south- west of our territory.”

Interesting. A telekinesis powered weapon. Etheans might be more than just a trading empire. What followed is mainly an hour-long discussion in political reasons for the event. Majority seems to think that Etheans are trying to flex their technological muscles with this display of power and main debate is whether this violates technological limiting treaties.

Nike’ quietly asks you if you are interested in this because she can technically ask someone’s cup to show you around in the meantime…

You decide that there might be still something you could learn from the discussion. If there isn’t, you could still just wait for this to end since it shouldn’t take that long anyway. After all, you are not a child on a “bring your child to work” day to get bored and wander off. So, you decide to stay and watch for anything important that might be mentioned.

During the debate about technological limitation treaties it became apparent that pantheons decided not to limit themselves, there is a limitation only on sharing of the technology with “mortals”. However, this itself massively limits what is available to pantheons themselves. While every pantheon has at least one person with the sum of human knowledge in their heads it seems that developing or mass-producing certain technologies requires a large industrial base. No one in the known world has access to microchips, complex petrochemicals or, until now, somewhat decent rocketry. Basically, anything advanced that can’t be sidestepped with psi powers is off the table. So it is unknown how Etheans got their hands on mass production of large quantities of machined parts and high explosives.

Speaking of which, rockets are incredibly complicated. Etheans used solid rocket motors for their missiles which are the simplest types of chemical rockets, but even then, these things should contain tens if not hundreds of thousands of individual parts. There is also a problem of guidance. It is apparent that these missiles were guided, but ironically current computer science is all or nothing. You either have to mess with large transistors that are in the best case semiconducting if not based on tubes or just plain mechanical, or you have to use an actual sentient being in the form of a human brain or in the form of a soul bound or created through a certain complicated technique. While creation of sentience for service is allowed, but disposable intelligence is heavily frowned upon by synthetic god community.
>>
>>3755512
The other interesting thing is that pantheons have their own arsenals of similar scale weapons. During discussion it was mentioned that Cenophila have some kind of atomic disruption energy weapon mostly powered by Elspeth’s psi potential and requiring her as an operator. Similar weapon is Holy Light which is Holy Nation’s surface to orbit psi powered device. It seems to be some kind of powerful beam emitter based on energy manipulation psi. Essentially a titanic laser beam cannon. It was implied that the pantheons have access to other weapons since these particular devices are limited to anti-air and anti-satellite roles due to limited angles of firing and fixed positions. The reason why Ethean weapon is different is due to the fact that it is purely technological. Most weapons designed to fight Ceilings are either created through expensive and complicated psi processes or used to be a part of a killed monster of an enormous size, usually both. That’s why they are next to impossible to mass produce or to even replicate.

In the end, War Council decided to stop with the argument since everyone understood each other’s points. Ceno pantheon will not make any official statements yet and they will come back together at a later date and make a final decision on how to react to this. The overall consensus was that it was a display of power. An act to show that Ethea is a powerful pantheon that can defend itself. Similar to first test of a soviet nuclear weapons.

To change the subject Elspeth asked: “So, while we are still here, is there anything else going on?”
Nike, who seems to be in charge of knowing this stuff, decided to reply: “Let’s see, there were a few conflicts between mortals. We had border skirmish with holies on land and on sea as usual, Valistrat is fighting basically everyone again but that’s not out of ordinary. Unlike two years ago the attack last month was weaker and our border fortresses held well. Ceno merchants to the east have some pirate issues. Tlaltecuhtli from that island seems to be acting up a little but it doesn’t seem too bad yet, we need to keep an eye on her for the next decade or so.

There was some kind of biosculptor who landed in the border region with Holies and started dumping a bunch of weaponized parasites but with the help of local mortals Muses beat her up. It could have been some unknown SG’s remote body but I’m not sure. She honestly died way too easily for that to be a serious problem. Remnants of Aino’s elves managed to reach dwarven territories and now they have a massive refugee crisis. Oh, speaking of which, anyone remembers that dwarven fortress that was crushed by some monster a couple decades ago? A group of monster hunters found a yet unknown entrance from somewhere in the western border region, went in and killed it. It is probably the reason for that probability flux that Vera felt.”
>>
>>3755513
“I think it is even stronger now” added Verdandi. “It is now quite possible that the surface wilderness would be colonized by the elves or dwarves, but the deeper region might be too monster packed for that to happen quickly. This might cause some border friction in a generation or two.”

Valentina smiled and after a small pause said in Ceno language: “Well, if all issues are dealt with, maybe we could address the newcomer. So, huntress, please tell us of your adventures. You must be very talented to get chosen by Nike’. Well, then again, she might get lonely…”

Nike’ disapprovingly glances at Val and sighs “…Look who’s talking…”

“What? It wouldn’t be the first time you brought a cutie candidate here. And the difference with me is that I don’t get embarrassed about it. You can’t stay a virgin goddess forever, right?” Adds Valentina with a sly grin. The rest of the pantheon have either “not again” or “this is going to be good’ reactions on the whole ordeal.

You decide to tell how you…
>Killed the Blight of Farsalos alone, a dangerous creature that took lives of a large group of hunters
>Repelled an attack of Giants
>Assisted Muse Matilda in the fight against the Mad Goddess
>Cleared the forgotten beast from the dwarven fortress
>Something else?

Please do also mention your reaction on all of this.

>Killed the Blight of Farsalos alone, a dangerous creature that took lives of a large group of hunters

I'm not very sure on divulging our killing of the giant monster, that was a feat very close to a cup level.
Get a little embarrassed by the implication but decide to use it to tease Nike later, like we did when she gave us a ring.
"So you usually bring your "cuties" to meet the pantheon then? And here was I thinking I had special treatment"

You manage to take over the conversation by telling about several of your feats. You’ve decided to forgo the Mad Goddess shenanigans just in case someone gets suspicious, but you do mention the Blight of Farsalos. This creature took down a group of experienced hunters and that alone is an impressive but not an impossible feat for the more talented of the monster hunters. Then you mention how you saved a large number of mutilated slaves from a tribe deep in the wilderness region. You do that mostly so that someone might send a cup to heal them since you are basically done with large construction. The last thing you mention is the subjugation of the forgotten beast. You change the stories so that they still make sense while not relying on your telekinesis. The group is mostly impressed with the latter achievement and this seems to be sufficient to convince the pantheon in Nike’s choice. While this is far from the most impressive result, this is still more than sufficient to become a candidate for becoming a Cup Bearer. After all, most people who become Cups have some remnants of augments from the Bloodline Founders so a few superhuman feats is not that impressive.

Valentina’s joke basically fizzles out after your explanation as you put up a serious attitude and after this the conference finally ends and SGs start leaving. You follow Nike and when you end up alone you ask her: "So you usually bring your "cuties" to meet the pantheon then? And here was I thinking I had special treatment"

Nike laughs and says “It is just Val’s teasing. I sometimes bring new Cups and Cup candidates closer to Pantheon’s business to see how they deal with this kind of stress and as a part of their training or testing. Surprisingly you don’t want zealots or people who fear gods too much. Elspeth used to do that as well but much rarer and at the later stages for her Cups. The joke mostly started because the latest three Muses were female… and the fact that… well… I prefer women. I don’t bang my Cups though, that’s just a rumor. I wasn’t in a relationship since I woke up from the pod. I was never married and I lost my fiancée during that Eastern European mess. I… don’t want to talk more about it, the pod luckily healed mental scars just as well as physical so it doesn’t hurt as much anymore and a lot of time has passed. I just still feel uncomfortable with relationships in general. Sorry that you got mixed up with this.”

To break up the awkward silence, she asked “So, you want to have a look around or shall we just get back to the city?”

“Well, Valhalla is basically a small private city built on top of an artificial mountain. We have a lot of stuff here. Currently we are in what we call a capital- complex in the middle of the plateau. It is a large palace of sorts that is communally owned by the entire pantheon. It basically contains everything needed from places for diplomatic guests which are most usually Cups or other SGs to private facilities for the pantheon and our servants, some workshop areas that are now mostly unused since almost everyone who needed them moved their stuff to their private properties and even artificial hot springs. The rest of the artificial plateau is separated between the individual members based on what they have there.

For example, Yawgmoth does mainly technology and manufacturing so he has a large factory complex inside of the mountain with its own hydroelectric dam powered by a river that falls from it so his footprint is pretty small and he mostly lives in his estate in the capital complex. I, as a war goddess, have many small estates in areas of strategic importance so I could quickly move to crisis areas and I too have my “home” here. Ninmah, however, has a massive nature preserve slash park that takes up the largest area of the plateau. Belkh has second largest area where he prototypes architecture. Mortati only has his university for his Cups here. Sam just has her own mansion close to the complex and doesn’t really want much more. You get the idea. There are some areas saved in case someone wants to join in but even then it won’t be a problem to redo a chunk of someone else’s facilities and reshuffle it all since Belkh can literally lift a mountain into the air and build whole cities in hours if he really needs to.

Kind of funny story with the name, back when we were setting up Elspeth had an idea to use very common references so that newly awakened SGs could know for sure that we are also from the pods. It kind of worked but everyone had the same idea and the name was already decades old so we couldn’t change it. This is a bit embarrassing and to be fair, her naming schemes are still terrible. Oh, and the name Olympus was already used in local mythos so we couldn’t use that. I think it was some ancient bloodline founder hero from before the fall so many people know the word.

I think that maybe we could go to the diplomatic areas since they have most of the recreational facilities and stuff like restaurants but we could pay a visit to someone. I don’t think that we’d get anything actually useful for you as a cup candidate though so it is mostly sightseeing and recreation, sorry. What do you think?”

Nika leads you to the diplomatic section as she explains how it all works: “We can’t have only the Cups to do everything, they are specialized and heavily enhanced servants that do complicated and often dangerous things like fighting, engineering or using a lot of psi powers. The majority of the service work such as cleaning and cooking is done by more common and much less powerful servants. The majority is basically biologically immortal humans or humans with very minor enhancements. Pantheon prefers to keep them in this weird state where they are paid well and live in unimaginable luxury by local standards but they are not really allowed to easily resign. This is in contrast to some SGs who are known to keep their servants in some form of personal dependency like serfdom or slavery. They have an option to go, but it would have to come with removal of immortality and some memory wipes so it is basically unprecedented in almost a hundred years this place was around for. I know it sounds questionable, but we have to control our technological and cultural pollution and they have easy access to our more off-work images and a variety of modern appliances. To be fair, they do consider it a great honor even after several generations of seeing who we really are as people.”

The path lies through a large covered garden that houses a miniature tropical rainforest biome filled with myriads of variously colored butterflies. “This was a joint project between Yaw and Nina. The entire dome is a sealed ecosystem that is artificially supplemented from the farms to keep biodiversity higher than what would be possible with just the plant life in this space. Temperature and humidity are supported all year round and it was Ninmah’s first success in resurrecting animal species. We managed to dig out remnants of a bio- bunker from our time deep in the ocean and salvage some of the samples, but Nina is still not that good at manipulating animal biology”

She leads you to what seems to be a small but luxurious restaurant after quite a bit of walking. It is done in a classical Italian style and there is a nice balcony with a few tables leading to a tidy indoor park that is designed to look like a vineyard. The cooking area is made in a way that you can see the chef preparing the meal from your seat. “I personally love this place. It was opened just 15 years ago and it is technically the first legit Italian restaurant that appeared in the world in two thousand years. Nina has spent decades restoring the crops and cooking techniques for it to taste correctly and all of the food is locally produced in her gardens. We have basically all of the western and common international cuisine in the palace and her passion right now is recreation of Indian specific dishes, but she is not done with them just yet.”
>>
>>3756424
The two of you take seats on the balcony and a nice waitress takes your order. You were personally craving some lasagna while Nike’ decided to take a seafood risotto for herself. The waitress leaves and the chef begins skillfully preparing the food in the background. “We don’t have many diplomatic visitors to be honest, the entire complex is a massive overkill. This is why it is open for the staff when it is not in use. They have their own food and recreation, stuff here is just on a whole new level since it is supposed to entertain some very spoiled synthetic gods on occasion.”

You strike up a conversation regarding Nike’s hobbies and she replies that she is a goddess of sport for a reason. She prefers to do various physical exercises to get rid of stress. She doesn’t have much free time but when she has a lot of it, she enjoys traveling the country as a mortal for new experiences. She says that it is refreshing to be a nobody when everyone knows your name.

About help, she doesn’t really need anything at the moment, but she thanks you for the offer. She asks if it would be alright to possibly call you through an oracle if she needs a favor. It might be something minor that she can’t or doesn’t want to get her cups involved with for various reasons or something bigger when she doesn’t want to get in front of the pantheon. You’d be able to refuse if you don’t want to, Nike’ most likely can compromise in case you are not available.

Regarding the birthday, barring something unforeseen she would definitely come to the party. However, she is not sure what to give you as a present. Nika has an idea and she wants it to be a surprise, but she would like to make sure it’s ok. Would you like something that is not considered to be a conventional present on birthdays? What she probably implies is that it might not be an item gift.

>Sure, surprise me

“Sure, surprise me” you reply to Nike’ and she smiles and says “I hope you’ll like it”. At this point the food has finally arrived and the discussion ceased so that you two could quietly enjoy it. To give Ceno credit, this is literally the tastiest lasagna you have ever tried in your life until now. It is a classical Italian “lasagne al forno” made out of thin layers of pasta with meat ragout filling, parmesan cheese and Béchamel sauce. From the first taste it becomes quite obvious that the meat used for this dish is made out of prime cuts not usually meant for mincing since it is difficult to tell the difference in most cases and other parts of meat are usually much cheaper. But in this case, they used basically the best beef cut they could. The pallet is slightly different which is probably due to differences in how cow was brought up. It feels slightly gamey and leaner but the difference is barely noticeable. You’ve never been to a five-star Michelin restaurant, but if you were told to imagine what the food from there would taste like you’d probably describe this. It is so good that you almost teared up a little. Nika seems to enjoy her amazing risotto dish with black mussels. Judging by what she picked when you first met her, she really likes seafood. The two of you quietly and peacefully enjoy the meal without distracting yourselves with further talks…

Alright, guys, the rules and mechanics are posted. This week was way more intense than what I predicted. Next thread will be delayed based on how early I manage to wake up.

I recommend even older players to take a look at the updated pastebin. It includes certain explanations of rarely used mechanics so please be aware of them. https://pastebin.com/jcac0p9D

Ask her if she is up for some more training sometime too

Adk her if the situation with the precog changed

And finally after that, thank her with a smile for what she has done for us so far and for keeping us a secret between the two of us.
