The Lighthouse War is over, but conflict still continues.

With Erusea's defeat at the hands of the Osean Federation and the International United Nations, the imperial nation has splintered into a confusing mess of separatists, freedom fighters, warlords, rogue military factions, and those seeking to profit from the chaos. Worse, Erusea's many automated drone factories still remain intact, waiting for new masters to come to claim them.

The Usean continent remains in crisis, and it's up to a new generation of pilots to face this next generation threat...

You are MILLY, the "Red Tail", a Belkan Air Force pilot fighting for the IUN!

Currently, you and Vicky were being dragged along by Sofia to apparently have a few celebratory drinks after having successfully defended the Anderson from an apparent ambush. It happened so fast that Bandit and Misono hadn't even managed to land on the carrier yet. You were pretty sure Bandit wouldn't be happy about you skipping debriefing, but you honestly didn't have much of a choice. Sofia was very much a human storm, just dragging you and Vicky along in her work like a force of nature.

Vicky just gives you a look of pure nervousness and uncertainty as Sofia happily hums some sort of Sapin tune to herself. Honestly, you couldn't really blame her for feeling that way.

You decide it's probably best not to tell Bandit about this. It was pretty clear he had a... complicated history with Sofia so calling him in may make things more awkward.

Plus it might be a good opportunity to get some dirt on him.

Soon enough, Sofia drags you and Vicky to the officers' mess, the one place on the entire carrier where alcohol could be served. The Osean Navy took that sort of thing really seriously, apparently. Fortunately, since you were pilots, you were all technically counted as officers in the eyes of the crew.

Sofia quickly and calmly slides in on the bar as if she owned the place. You honestly wouldn't be surprised if she had been here already over the course of this "cruise".

"So, what can I get you?" She asks cheerfully as she wave the bartender over.

"O-oh, well if you put it that way then..." Vicky nods.

Dang, that was a quick change in attitude...

"Okay, it's decided then!" Sofia smiles as she turns to the barkeeper. "Two shots of tequila! Leave the bottle!"

And just like that, a pair of filled glasses and a bottle slide in front of you and Sofia. Meanwhile, Vicky seems to be drinking what you swear is a cherry soda or something. You thought you were kidding when you called her a kid-

"All right! Bottoms up!" Sofia winks as she holds her glass out. "

"Uh, bottoms up." You nod as you raise your own glass, clinking it against Sofia's.

Osea lied about the how much resources there were and promised Belka a large chunk any money made from them, and used that to trick Belka into selling the land for much less than they could've.
Belka didn't have the money to set up extraction themselves, so the hope was that by selling that relatively small amount of land they could get the money from the sale AND the resources to fix the more important parts of Belka.
The Great Lakes is also much less Belkan than South or Nord Belka.

"Pretty sure the Air Force just didn't know what else to do with us." You shrug. "I mean, after the Belkan War, the combination of pilot attrition and the forced disarmament meant they didn't have a big pool of pilots to rely on."

"Huh? What would make you two unpopular with your superiors?" Vicky wonders. "You two seem totally normal!"

"Mmmmm, perhaps an illicit affair~?" Sofia giggles.

"No. Hell the fuck now." You groan. "I do know that Bandit flew in the Circum-Pacific War. What exactly he did was always kinda hazy, but I know for a fact he flew for the anti-war side. There's the possibility he shot down fellow Belkans in that war, which may have pissed off or scared some of the higher ups."

"Hmmm, that much I could guess." Sofia nods, and then pulls at your cheeks. "But who sort thing did a cute little thing like you get mixed up in?"

Okay, this was starting to get into some pretty iffy territory. While your involvement with One Belka wasn't exactly top secret, Uncle Weiss did remind you it wasn't a good idea to bring that up if you didn't need to.

And here's why I said it was stupid. Why should the Belkan government trust their regional rival of the past sixty-odd years to give them a good deal?

>Belka didn't have the money to set up extraction themselves,
So why not do what governments normally do when they need money and sell bonds for that purpose? I get that the writers handed the pre-DLP government an idiot ball just so the DLP could rise to power and declare war, it doesn't mean Belka is blameless when they got themselves into that mess in the first place.

"Okay, so what's your story with Bandit, then?" You ask, turning the subject of the conversation back to Sofia. "Looks to me like the two of you have a past."

"I suppose you can say that!" Sofia giggles, still a bit unsteady. "I guess it all started when me and Bandit got into a little dogfight against each other."

"What?" You blink.

"Whaaaaat?!" Vicky yelps.

"It's quite the story." Sofia gives a sly wink. "Well, to explain a few things, after the Belkan War, Sapin and Ustio came to an agreement. Ustio doesn't really have a standing air force, but Sapin does, so they asked Sapin to help provide air policing along their border with Belka."

Oh. OH. So that's where this was going...

"I was a young hotshot back then, fresh out of the academy and eager to prove my worth! When I saw Belkan plane cross into Ustio's air space, well, I just couldn't resist!"

You're about to protest, but you pause for moment to mull things over.

"Well, you're not wrong." You concede. "I mean, national pride is one of the few things Belka has left."

"Quite the bleak outlook." Sofia laughs. "That's always the thing with you all. You're all just so damn serious all the time. You should all learn to lighten up once in a while! Go with the flow of things!'

"Easy for Sapin to say." You glower.

"Um, how about the rest of the story?" Vicky quickly says, hoping to get things back on track.

"Oh, right!" Sofia nods. "Well, over the next few months was a game between us, weaving back and forth across the border to goad a reaction out the other. And then things er... became interesting."

"Interesting how?" You ask.

"There was a bit of a midair collision when we both got a bit too aggressive and we were both forced to eject." Sofia explains a bit sheepishly. "Bandit tried to pull a silly little stunt to try and scare me and I guess he misjudged his speed..."

"Wait wait wait." You blink. "You're telling me that Bandit tried to pull a STUNT?!"

"It sounds like he was a totally different person back then." You frown.

"Oh? He's changed?" Sofia pauses.

"Well, he's sorta a super by the book killjoy. Not the type of guy to do stunts for no reason." You explain.

"Hmmm, perhaps he had a change in priorities since we last met!" Sofia nods. "He was quite talkative and... passionate when we encountered each other after having ejected. Ah, to go back to those simple days..."

"Wait..." You pause. "So you two ACTUALLY banged?!"

"M-Milly!" Vicky croaks, her cheeks turning crimson. "What kind of question is that to ask!?"

"Ohohoho!" Sofia giggles. "Well, what happened was-"

"That's quite enough of that." Bandit says sternly. When the hell did he get here? "Sofia, I think you've waylaid my pilots for long enough."

"Ah, and we were just getting to the NASTY party." Sofia grins smugly. "Are you afraid of what your juniors might think of you?"

"What happened back then isn't relevant to the situation now." Bandit sighs. "You could have at least told me you planned to carouse with Red and Vicky."

"Oh, where's the fun in that?" Sofia responds playfully.

"We'll talk about this later." Bandit sighs and shakes his head. "Red, Vicky, come on. We've got a debriefing to attend."

"All right, guess it's back to work." You sigh as you hop off your bar stool. "Come on Vicky."

"R-right!" Vicky quickly follows suit.

"Don't worry, I'll hold the fort here!' Sofia waves the both of you off. "If you ever want to fly together, you know where to find me!"

Bandit just silently shakes his head and leaves the officer's mess, motioning for you and Vicky to follow him out.

"So, did you two really do it?" You ask once you get into the hall.

"Like I said, it's not important." Bandit grunts. "What you should be doing is focusing on the mission at hand."

"Come ooooon, Sofia said you used to be cool." You roll your eyes.

It's brief, but Bandit pauses at those words before continuing on.

"That's all in the past. Like I said, it's not important." He repeats.

"Can you at least tell me what kind of stunt you try to pull that got you an Sofia to crash? I wanna try it sometime!"

"Milly!" Vicky gasps, mortified a the thought.

"Of all the pilots to end up on the same ship with." Bandit mutters to himself.

And quickly enough, you were in the main pilot briefing room where the Andersen's two main officers, Captain Miller and the ship's CAG, Commander Lehman were waiting. Commander Lehman, you could understand, since he was supposed to be in charge of all of the squadrons embarked on the ship, Osean or not. Captain Miller, though, was a bit unusual. Shouldn't he be busy running the ship?

In addition to them, the rest of your squadron was present, as well as Scalpel and Guillotine from Orpheus Squadron.

"First of all, I would like to say, damn good job in that previous sortie." Commander Lehman starts off. "From initial damage assessment reports, we've downed multiple enemy planes, drones, ships, and missile launchers positioned to ambush our fleet, with minimal casualties on our end. Damn good job."

Well, things were starting off well, at least.

"Unfortunately, that doesn't mean the end of our troubles." Captain Miller grunts. "Commander, let them know what's ahead."

"Of course." Commander Lehman nods and points to the projector screen on the wall, showing a map of Usea. "After that attack, we've launched additional reconnaissance flights to scout the rest of our planned route. We've found... complications."

The screen then focuses on a narrow strait, weaving between a large peninsula and island. Red dots then begin populating the coastlines.

"Our recon birds spotted what appear to be multiple anti-ship missile batteries lining the coasts of both Seals Bridge and Proud Island, effectively blocking off access to the strait." Commander Lehman explains. "This means our options boil down to either fighting our way through the strait, or swinging down around the south side of Proud Island to outrange their missiles."

"But that would add weeks to our trip." Captain Miller warns. "And we're due for a port call to the Comona Islands. The fact that somebody's gone through the trouble of blocking off the strait to us a this time is... concerning. Especially with our limited communications."

"So, the question is." Commander Lehman yes you all. "Are you confident in your ability to break that blockade? We expect heavy anti-air and enemy aircraft presence. Otherwise we'll have to sail around."

“We can totally take it!” You say with smug confidence.

“It doesn’t appear we have much other choice, anyways.” Bandit says in agreement. “Who’s to say that going south won’t put us in another trap?”

“We can smash up those launchers and anything else they can put up in the air!” Guillotine says confidently. “Don’t worry about it!”

Commander Lehman then looks to Captain Miller, who gives a simple, grim nod.

“All right, then we’ll make go at it. We’ll be relying on you to clear out enough of those missiles so the Andersen can get through.”

“Hey, can't we like, call in for reinforcements or anything?" You ask. "There's supposed to be friendly nations out there, right?"

"Most of the nations in this area have their hands full already trying to keep order in their own borders." Captain Miller points out. "And even then, organizing a coordinated assault would take time we may not have."

"Eh, then I guess we should just go full steam ahead." You shrug.

"However, I am worried about the status of Comona Island." Captain Miller frowns. "There's a critical military base and space port located there, which makes it a prime target for these rogue elements. Commander, would it be possible to send a flight to make contact with them?"

"They'd have to break through the blockade to do it." Commander Lehman points out. "But it should be possible, and they'd likely draw attention away from the fleet. It would be highly dangerous, though."

"They're totally not rookies anymore." You point out. "I mean, they're both already aces!"

"You do have a point." Bandit nods and turns to the two carrier officers. "I'll volunteer Raven Squadron to make the run to Comona Island."

Both Scalpel and Guillotine look at each other briefly before Guillotine lets her opinion known.

"Yeah, we don't have a problem with that." She says.

"Then it's settled." Commander Lehman nods. "Raven Squadron will commence an operation to break through the blockade and reach Comona Island. The remainder of the carrier wing will focus on eliminating the blockade for the Andersen to pass through. We're still a few days away before we'll be in engagement range, so you'll have the opportunity for a bit of R&R before then. Dismissed."

"I'll go report back to our superiors what's going on." Bandit says to you as he gets up.

"Me and Vicky will be going out on deck to see the view." Misono grins. "It's quite a rare opportunity to finally get up there!"

"Hey, Vicky, Miso, you mind if I tag along?" You ask.

"Not at all!" Misono nods happily. "The more the merrier!"

"Yeah, it's fine!" Vicky nods.

And with that, the three of you start heading up through the decks of the Andersen.

"So, is this really okay?" You wonder. "I thought they didn't like letting too many people onto the flight deck?"

"Well, Mead managed to convince the crew to give us a pass, so it should be fine as long as we stay out of the way." Misono explains.

"I'm so excited!" Vicky hops up and down, her twintails bouncing in unison. "To be able to see flight deck operations up close!"

"You know we do the actual takeoff and landing, right?" You raise an eyebrow.

"W-well, it's a totally different thing being in the cockpit and watching from outside!" Vicky retorts.

"You got a point there." You concede.

Finally, you reach a large, bulkhead door that Misono pulls open. Sunlight floods your vision, forcing you to wince as your eyes adjust.

And sure enough, there was the flight deck, the sun beating down from clear blue skies. Deck crew in their color coded uniforms scurry back and forth, making sure there's enough room for planes coming up from the elevators to take off, while at the same time directing freshly landed planes to where they need to go. It was all like some well, oiled machine.

"Man, carriers are really something, aren't they?" Vicky absolutely beams. "It makes me wish Nordennavic could have her own aircraft carriers!"

"Ehhhh, it was a bad call." You grunt. "Never should have happened."

"Well, I shouldn't be one to comment on your countries affairs, but it seems like a rather unhealthy thing to focus on." Misono sighs.

"Especially if you think invading other countries is the way to achieve it!" Vicky adds.

"Those aren't real- ugh nevermind. Forget about it." You sigh.

Suddenly, your phone vibrates in your pocket. You take it out and glance at it, seeing that the call is from Bandit.

"Yeah? What is it, Boss?" You ask as you answer the call.

"Red, get over to the comms room. There's something you need to hear. Just you." Bandit says rather grimly.

"Uh, right. Give ma sec." You hang up the phone and look to your wingmates. "Sorry, looks like Bandit needs me for something."

"Oh, go on ahead." Misono says. "We're not really going anywhere."

"We literally can't go anywhere. We're on a ship!" Vicky points out.

"A very large ship." Misono reminds her.

You head on over to the comms room, which was nestled in the ship's island. It was here that long distance calls could be made. However, given how spotty satellite coverage was at the moment, this must have been really important if the head honchos back home wanted to talk directly.

As you enter, you see Bandit sitting alone at the radio, a rather grim look on his face.

"She's here, sir." Bandit says simply.

"Ah yes, good." Uncle Weiss' voice buzzes back.

Wait, what the hell? Wasn't he supposed to be retired already?

"Uncle Weiss?" You blurt out. "What the hell is going on!?"

"Captain, I can assume you and Milly are alone?" Uncle Weiss asks sternly.

"We are." Bandit confirms.

"All right. Milly, this is rather serious." Uncle Weiss continues. "This is still very preliminary information, and may not be accurate, but I thought you should know."

"Know what?" You frown.

"It's about the enemies that have been harrying the IUN all this time. We have reason to believe they are led by, or at least involved with, remnants of One Belka."

Basically, Belka went through their own version of the Great Depression due to military overspending. So then they figured they could stave off complete collapse by allowing their outlying regions to secede, essentially breaking up Belka and forming several new nations including Ustio.

Then the old government got voted out for a more ultranationalist party that wanted to bring the seceded territories back into the fold, even if it meant resorting to force.

During the 70's there were pro-independence protests in the Eastern territories, but Belka crushed them with it's military. Then when the recession hit in the 80's along with the Oseans funding and support forthe independence and seccession groups, it caused a perfect storm for the Eastern territories to secede. Belka hoped that this would help them revive the economy in Belka proper without having to spend taxes on the East.
However that didn't work because Osea, so when resources were discovered in Ustio they wanted it all rightfully back.

"Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised." You grunt. "You know Belkans never quit."

"All too well." Uncle Weiss says in agreement. "After all, they started off as splinters of the Gray Men, and they continue to lurk and slither in the shadows."

"So, what, you're afraid they're going to come after me?" You wonder. "As revenge?"

Bandit just eyes you silently.

"Unlikely. These remnants probably aren't even connected to you. The bigger concern is if something like this were to come to light to the IUN or Osea."

Okay, yeah, THAT would be a problem, honestly.

"So what exactly are you asking us to do?" Bandit glowers.

"Continue your mission with the IUN and keep their activities contained." Uncle Weiss instructs. "We will continue our efforts on our end to narrow down the location of their leadership so that they can be dealt with."

"Wait. Wait wait wait." You scowl as you lean even closer to the comm console. "Uncle, did Command plan this from the beginning? Was this why Command fronted us to the IUN?"

"You know I can't answer that." Uncle Weiss replies.

"I'd like to know, too." Bandit says softly but seriously. "A Belkan pilot who opposed the Gray Men, and another Belkan pilot who defected from One Belka? Now we're with the IUN fighting possible puppet forces of One Belka remnants? That's too much of a coincidence, isn't it?"

"Command has their reasons." Uncle replies cryptically, but not outright denying the claim.

"All right, whatever." You sigh. "Fine, we'll just keep doing what we're doing."

"And please don't get caught by them." Uncle Weiss continues. "I- we don't want a repeat of what happened last time."

You wince at that reminder. Yeah, One Belka didn't treat their prisoners, much less deserters, very well. If Karla hadn't saved you back then-

You shake your head, trying not to think about it.

"All right, we'll keep an eye out, then." Bandit concludes. "And don't worry, we won't tell anybody."

"Even Vicky and Misono?" You blink.

"Especially them." Bandit grunts. "They don't need to know."

Bandit then shuts off the comm console and gets up, heading for the door.

"Come on, Red. We've got a lot to prepare for."

"Sure thing, Boss."

You just follow him out silently, unsure of what else to say. Seemed like this simple peacekeeping mission had just gotten far more complicated...

>And that's it for tonight! As always, we'll continue things on Friday. However, it looks like thread turnover is starting to slow down, and there's 3 ACQ threads on the board right now, so we'll likely have to start consolidating more sessions into a single thread. If we still have at least 2 ACQ threads on the board next week, we'll just continue the quest in this thread instead of starting a new one. So just stay tuned!

"Red! Hey Red!"

"What?" You blink, getting snapped out of your train of thought.

"You were kinda quiet for a moment there." Vicky says with concern, static fuzzing up her voice. "I almost thought you passed out in the cockpit or something!"

"No, I'm all right." You respond. It was a bit of a lie, but you couldn't tell her, of course.

"Red, this isn't the time to start losing focus." Bandit reminds you sternly. "We'll be in visual range of the strait soon."

As the unit responsible for making contact with Comona Island, that meant you'd have to spearhead the breakthrough of the hostile blockade in front of the Andersen and her task force. Immediately behind you were Orpheus and Flamenco Squadrons, who would be backing up your advance.

So far, the idea was...

>To blitz through the airspace as quick as possible. Time was of the essence.

The plan was to take out whatever targets of opportunity that you could find along the way. After all, the point of this entire op was to make the Andersen's transit through the strait as smooth as possible.

To that effect, your squadron was slinging some specialized air to ground weaponry to make things easier.

>IRON BOMB: Not particularly accurate, but you can carry a lot of them and they have a nice, big blast radius.

Your Su-30 was kitted out with some AGMs. Pretty neat weapons that would let you hit targets from a distance with good accuracy. Don't have to put yourself in danger by actually having to fly over the target to attack it! The IUN actually letting you have toys to play with was nice, even if they were only basic ones.

"Visual on the strait!' Misono calls out. "I'm getting spiked on radar!"

"Me too!" Vicky confirms.

"All right, they know we're coming." Bandit grunts. "Flamenco and Orpheus are here to cover us, but we've got to pull our own weight here. Keep moving forward but engage enemies at will!"

"Affirmative!" Misono and Vicky respond. You meanwhile are more focused on your HUD and radar, trying to pick out targets of opportunity. Immediately, you could spot antiship missile launcher set up on the beaches, lying in wait for the Andersen. Clustered around them were AA gun batteries for close in defense. Not really a threat if you kept your distance, but were definitely there to discourage attack runs.

Your radar was also picking up SAM radars as they lit up, trying to score target locks on you and your squadron. There weren't many of them, but they could get problematic if you ignored them for too long. Taking them out would also greatly help Orpheus and Flamenco, even they'll never admit it.

There wasn't anything in the air though, which was a bit concerning.

"Swordfish! Let's go get those SAMs!" You call out.

"W-what?!" Vicky stammers. "But they're already trying to lock on to us!"

"They're gonna try and shoot us either way, so we might as well try to shoot them first!" You reason as you bank towards Proud Island.

"I see missile launches!" Misono warns.

Sure enough, up ahead you could see the signature white plumes of missile exhaust lancing out from the trees. Shooting at you from this range was a bit of a long shot, but you guess they were really itching to take you down.

Going in high was the fastest and most direct route, and would be the easiest approach to get a lock for your AGMs. However, you'd be in the ideal engagement envelope for SAMs, so you'd have to be constantly wary of missile attacks.

The alternative was to fly low to stay beneath the SAM radars, but that would potentially put you in range of the AA guns. They weren't particularly accurate and couldn't knock you out of the sky like a missile could, but they could throw a lot of rounds in the air.

You decide to approach from on high. You keep your Su-30 steady, making a beeline for the nearest battery of SAMs. Already, you can see the first wave of missile spiraling in as your missile warning systems start screaming that you are, in fact, being attacked with missiles.

You attempt a hard, high G bank to throw off the incoming missiles, but you must have gotten your timing wrong. One of the missiles fails to keep up and shoots past where you previously were harmlessly, but the second missile has enough time to adjust its aim and vector towards your flight path. And having blown all your energy in the turn, you don't have the time to-

"Red, watch out!"

Having started behind you, Vicky's Gripen blazes over you on full afterburner, vomiting flares and chaff between you and the incoming missile. It doesn't quite throw off the missile, but it does prematurely detonate it, showing your Su-30 with shrapnel and missile fragments.

"Thanks for the save." You gasp, checking your instruments. Everything seemed to be in order. Guess that shrapnel damage was mostly just superficial.

"Don't worry about it! It's what wingmates do!" Vicky reassures you, her Gripen leveling out.

However, you did still feel a bit bad that you forced Vicky to use her own countermeasures to save your ass. That would mean she'd have fewer tools to defender herself if something were to happen.

Meanwhile, Bandit and Misono take the opportunity to pounce on the SAMs while they're still reloading. Bandit waves through the battery, firing off missiles to home in on the launchers and radars. Misono, unsurprisingly enough, dives even closer than Bandit does and take out her targets in gun runs. Pretty ballsy move to take out ground targets with guns.

Meanwhile, Flamenco Squadron seemed to have split into two groups, sweeping down both shorelines to roll up the exposed anti-ship launchers with volleys of rockets and missiles. The Orpheus pair were orbiting much higher up, keeping an eye out for aerial threats.

"All right, we've neutered the SAMs in this area." Bandit reports. "We should proceed with the second stage of the mission."

Unfortunately, not matter how much you jink and juke, neither you nor Vicky can seem to break out the net the MQ-101s have trapped you in. The damn AIs running these drones seemed to be far smarter than the MQ-99s ever were. It was damn infuriating!

Thankfully, Vicky is continually able to fun interference for you, her mere presence being enough to ward the MQ-101s away from settling in on your tail.

Heh, trapped in the middle of the enemy with minimal support? It sounded like it was just your style. You flip the safety of your weapons off and zero in your attention on the nearest drone.

However, much to your frustration, these damn drones prove to be really damn slippery, always staying just out of your line of fire, despite your best efforts to get a bead on them.

You then get a missile warning as a pair of MQ-101s slide in on your tail, ready to fire-

When a hail of gunfire whizzes through and shears both drones out of the sky. A split second later, Misono's F-2 flashes past, its cannons still barking. Up above, Bandit comes diving in with his F-15, belching missiles at the drones farther out. Their combined efforts scatter the drones, at least for the moment as they fall back to reassess the situation.

"Get moving, Red!" Bandit grunts. "Now's our chance to make a break for it!"

Yeah, no. Drones literally coming out of the sea? You weren't sticking around here any longer than you had to.

"Swordfish, did you hear that?" You call out to your wingmate.

"I'm already ahead of you!" Vicky responds.

Sure enough, you see her Gripen blitz past you, its single engine flaring at maximum power.

What? She was already ditching the fight just like that? You were gonna have WORDS with her after all this!

You quickly follow suit, putting your Su-30 at maximum throttle. The drones rapidly fall behind, none of them apparently deciding to pursue. They were a lot of things, but fast wasn't one of them. You're pretty sure they couldn't even break the sound barrier.

Finally, the drones fall out of range of radar, and with no further contacts, you feel the tension in the air ease up as your squadron relaxes just a tad. You see Misono's F-2 flying a bit close to you, though.

"Something wrong, Knives?" You ask.

"My apologies, I do not mean any offense, but I was about to ask you the same question." Misono replies a bit apologetically.

"What?" You blink. "What do you mean?"

"It is very clear that your performance this mission was... below expectations." Misono tries to explain as diplomatically as she could.

"So you're saying I flew like a complete nugget." You groan.

"Something like that." Misono says in agreement. "Such a drop in performance, in my experience, results form some sort of injury or inner turmoil. Is that the case?"

Shit, Misono was a lot sharper than you gave her credit for, that's for sure.

"It's nothing." You tell her.

"Hmmmm, if you say so." Misono responds coolly, clearly letting you know she wasn't convinced.

"Those MQ-101s are on a completely different level from the MQ-99s." Bandit interjects, trying to back you up. "Once they focus on you, they're tough to catch and tough to shake off. Simple as that."

"Of course, sir." Misono says.

"I'm just glad we're all okay!" Vicky adds. "I hope we did enough for the Andersen to get through..."

"Don't worry, Orpheus and Sofia are more than skilled enough to handle things on their own." Bandit reassures her. "What I'm more worried about is what we might encounter ahead- what is that?"

You glance at your radar screen and blink as your see a MASSIVE blip, nearly covering the entire damn screen. There was something gigantic and airborne right ahead of you!

And that's when you see it.

A massive, aerial fortress casually floating in the sky.

What hell did you fly into...!?

"Come on, you aren't gonna shoot me down." You laugh. "How are you gonna poach me from from the Belkan Air Force otherwise?"

"That's the thing about you, Milly. Too damn smart to be a pilot." Auntie Sam sighs. "Bandit, I take it you're still alive, too?"

"That's right." Bandit finally jumps into the conversation.

"Looks liked you picked up a couple more strays, huh?" She says playfully.

"Strays?" Misono wonders.

"H-how rude!" Vicky fumes.

"Ha, well, we're a bit busy out here on company business. If it's Comona Island you're headed for, you're almost there! Just a little farther east, you can't miss it!"

"What sort of company business are you talking about?" Bandit asks.

"Proprietary info!" Sam responds playfully. "But well, it HAS been a while since you've visited. Maybe if you stop by real quick we can talk!"

Waaaaaait. Did Bandit also have a history with Sam? That was something you didn't realize before!

"Well, a quick pit stop wouldn't hurt, right?" You suggest to Bandit. "Might be useful to top off the tanks. We did burn off quite a lot getting past those drones."

"Good point." Bandit says in agreement. "Sam, I'm assuming the Gullinbursti has space to accept us?"

"Of course! Our pilots are out on assignment so there's plenty of hangar space!"

"Wait, we're going to LAND on that thing?!" Vicky yelps.

"Hey, it's pretty much a carrier...that flies." You try to reassure her. "Nothing to it!"

"Ha! I look forward to this unique challenge!" Misono says confidently as her F-2 starts climbing already.

Fortunately, it's not too difficult to get everyone landed on the Gullinbursti. You and Bandit had enough experience, while Misono was pretty gung ho. Only Vicky seemed to have any real trouble, having to take a couple tries before getting an acceptable landing vector.

As you dismount from your Su-30 and your feet hit the deck, you immediately feel the difference between the Gullinbursti and the Andersen. There was something about being on an airship hat just felt... different.

"Milly!" Auntie Sam says cheerfully as she walks up to you. "It's been too damn long!"

"I DON'T REGRET ANYTHING!" You bellow.

"Aw, that's such a shame!" Auntie Sam coos.

And then your vision explodes with stars and everything goes black for a second.

When your vision clears up, you find yourself lying flat on your back, a concerned Vicky and a very bemused Misono kneeling over you.

"W-what happened?" You mumble, still dazed and dizzy.

"It seems Samantha is quite the wrestler." Misono says with genuine awe. "She executed a near perfect suplex on a person far larger than herself!"

Oh, that explains it, then.

You know, you sort of wonder if your old room was still around on the ship. You had used to spend quite a bit of time on the Gullibursti back when you were younger, and Sam always boasted about keeping your room nice and ready for when you eventually decided to come work for her.

"All right, let's go check out if my room's still around." You say with a grin as you take the lead. Even if the design and people were different, you couldn't easily change the layout of the city, and everything felt familiar to you.

"So why would you have a room for yourself?" Misono asks. "Were you part of her crew?"

"Well, yeas and no." You shrug. "Honestly she was hoping I'd join up with her company eventually. She was pretty bummed when I turned down her offer."

"Why did you?" Vicky wonders. "Looks like they're running a very aggressive and successful operation."

"Well, I guess I sorta just wanted to see what was out in the world first." You shrug. "It would get boring fast if I signed up with Auntie Sam right away."

"Oh! That makes sense." Vicky nods.

By this point, you've already reached the section of the ship housing all of the residential units for the crew and pilots. It honestly wasn't all that different from the Andersen, with most of the facilities being communal between the crew.

Though beyond those were the private rooms for the officers and certain visitors and VIPs. Sure enough, a quick, cursory check revealed that one of those staterooms was in fact yours, still kept here after all this time. Then again, you don't quite remember what's in there. What if there's stuff in there that could embarrass you?

"So, are we going to go in?" Misono wonders.

Thankfully, it looks like you didn't leave anything too embarrassing in your quarters. It was pretty basic, though the walls were lined with posters depicting various planes, as well as a lot of Wild Card memorabilia. A LOT.

Yeah... you guess there was a time where there was a lot of merchandise of them being passed around. They were working for a private company after all, and they DID save the world that one time.

W-wait a minute, they actually had plastic figures of Karla? And you somehow had a first edition collector's version of one...?!

Both Vicky and Misono simply stare at the contents for a few seconds. It was pretty clear they were trying to hold back a healthy amount of laughter.

"Yeah yeah, laugh it up." You grunt, crossing your arms. "I like to see YOU having the complete first edition set of the Wild Cards WITH the scale model planes to boot!"

"I'm sorry, it's just... I never took you to be such a dedicated fan!" Vicky giggles. "It's a whole different side to you I never knew about!"

"Having such a deep appreciation for something you admire is something that should not be made fun of." Misono adds.

"Honestly, I almost forgot I had all this stuff." You admit bashfully. "Guess I never got around to moving it all out."

"Well, I guess you have something to thank Samantha for!" Vicky smiles.

"Secret spot?" Vicky blinks.

"Yeah. Spend enough time on a ship, you start to learn all its quirks, you know?" You nod. "Now... hm. If I remember this right..."

And... well shit. You uh, kinda forgot where your secret spot was.

Maybe it was just a little too secret. Or maybe the layout of the Gullinbursti had changed over the years. Honestly it was a bit embarrassing, but you couldn't just admit it right in front of Vicky and Misono-

"Milly? Holy shit, there ya are!"

You pause as a very familiar and very obnoxious Gracemerian pilot strides up to you and slaps you in the shoulder.

"How are ya doing, Milly? Looks like you're still alive and kicking!"

"Hi, Lara." You smile. Maybe you could use this to your advantage.

"No way! The Blood Stripe herself?!" Vicky gasps.

"Aw shit, is that what they call me out here?" Lara chuckles. "Not exactly the most friendly title, huh?"

"It's only natural, being one of the most feared aces in the world!' Misono's eyes shine. "You were also in the Wild Cards, right? Second only to Valkyrie herself!"

"Shucks, you're embarrassing me when you talk about me like that!" Lara laughs. "So Milly, if you're here, did ya finally decide to take up the Boss' offer?"

"Not exactly." You shake your head. "We were headed to Comona and it was just sorta coincidence we ran into you."

"Comona, huh? Interesting." Lara nods.

"What? Something we should know?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Er, I don't think I'm supposed to talk about that!" Lara shakes her head. "You know Sam. Doesn't like us blabbing about our work and all..."

"Fine, guess I'll ask Sam, then." You sigh. "Anyways, how are things going with Wolf?"

"Oh, pretty well so far!' Lara chuckles. "Makes a great partner, but a terrible wingmate."

"Is that so?' You nod.

"But other than that, things are going great between us!" Lara nods. "He's just gotta learn that I'M the flight lead and not him!"

Vicky and Misono just glance at each other, wondering what you two were talking about.

"Oh, I see how it is~." You give a smug grin.

"Hey, quit it!" Lara smacks you in the shoulder, her cheeks getting a bit pink. "It's not like that!"

"So when are you gonna propose then?" You ask, still teasing her.

"That's Wolf's job!" Lara groans.

Vicky and Misono meanwhile start whispering to each other. Ah, nothing like some gossip.

"Milly, quit bullying Lara! We've still got a lot of work to do!' Auntie Sam berates you as she appears with Bandit. "After talking things over with Bandit, it seems that Wild Card Security and the IUN have aligning interests!"

"According to Sam, WCS had been contracted to provide security for emergency satellite launches at Comona to restore the global communications network." Bandit adds. "However, it appears there's a hostile party intent on sabotaging these launches."

"Our best guess is that there's some form of camouflaged, or even submersible carrier launching drone attacks on the launch site." Sam sighs in exasperation. "We're holding them off just fine, but we don't have the extra manpower or resources to hunt that carrier down."

"If such a thing exists, it would be huge threat to the Andersen as well." Bandit concludes. "Once we reach Comona we will participate in the operation to secure the surrounding waters before the Andersen catches up."

Well, guess it seems like there's no shortage of extra work to be done, even when you're away from your IUN nannies.

Still, it'd be nice flying with Lara again. You wonder how much she's improved since you last saw her. As Lara glances your way and smirks, you figure she's thinking the same about you, too.
