Imai is a little more than a flyspeck on a map, a little border town between the here and the there. Neither too grand to host important visitors nor too small entirely to disappear, Imai leads a quiet existence.

In recent times, the borders have grown more porous as uncertainty and unrest scours the countryside. The Company is on the trail to Imai, but smoke is on the wind and cries of anguish roll across the hills.

The Captain pauses, raises a gauntlet clad hand to summon the Company to muster. Does not speak much never. Never has. Up ahead, a problem. We are here for resupplies and local intelligence. But the fire ahead, flickering orange light through the trees, is always an ill tiding. Debate follows. Eventually, a decision is reached.


Lantern Lichen, you are quiet and quick. Advance ahead while the company musters.

Rolling 3-4 is a normal crit. +Crit expands the range from 3-4 to 3-5, going from 2% to 5%!

Snipe then stacks on top of this, which means that when you Aim you add +1 hit and +1 Crit.

So, as one would, spend a single Ap to Aim for +1, or more. Say 3 and you're +3 to hit, and +3 Crit from Snipe, and suddenly the arrows are quite dangerous.

Range is as far as your skill allows. Every 2 hexes is -1 to hit. So if you fire at a target at range 10, you take -5 (if you fire at a target at range 10 while aiming for +3 you take -2.)

If you are UP HIGH, range increments double!

In disarray and harried, our superior local strength begins to show! One bandit is set alit and stabbed by a former friend, another is sent careening from a powerful blow. Reinhardt spins with elemental grace and flicks a blade across a vulnerable gap in an armored coat and the poor bandit begins to leak vital fluids in an unstoppable flower. Rather than face down the armoured swordsman, he runs!

Lichen sends a flurry of knives to impact after Micha's deadly shot, and another bandit tumbles...

And then the Gaunt strides forward

They say it is the Lantern's duty to shed light, to bring the warmth, to light the path and to be a bonfire beacon to those in need.

The rest of the company comes slowly into the town, silent, careful, spreading out to check the ruins and the rubble.

Some grab shovels and begin to dig.
Others search for survivors. When none are found, the idle hands soon find more shovels.

The Company healers take to their grim task. Bruises, scrapes, broken bones and the passionate courage that spurs someone to stand up after suffering two cracked ribs, all things that lead to bedrest and forced recuperation.

In the backwash of the Empyreal Fire and next to a Negation Offering, Karna was scourged by fire and rent by cracks in the world. Aife coughs up smoke for days as cinders find their wandering way into lungs. The attention of high Icons manifest itself in unpredictable ways.


With no survivors and most buildings on fire, we have precious few leads to grasp what happened here. Perhaps this "child" has some value or worth that made the slaughter of a village an endeavour for dark souls to contemplate. This Bandit Leader conjured a Pure Nightgaunt. A mystery in a mystery.

Informers will need to be found. The Captain will attempt to reach out to local informants. Perhaps some sense of all this can be made..

Take some time, adjust your gear, recover from bruises, pain, burns, concussions, broken ribs and undue attention of alien entities.

As the village of Imai no longer exists we cannot resupply, so we are low on supplies. As no local guides are available, we cannot know where to resupply. As no sound shelter remains we will have to get out the tents. This will complicate the recovery process. The Company healers and doctors will do what they can but we will be severe slowed down before we can consider moving. Burial duties will also consume some time.

Let us hope that whoever planned this attack does not find what they are looking for while we recover.

The melee deteriorates into a scramble for survival. Pushed onto a sharp spear, one bandit sighs in pain. The others close ranks and swing blades with wild abandon. Worst presents their ungearded rear to the enemy and is savaged by a wolfhound. Karna swings wildly with their fists and is in turn struck with multiple arrows, raked by teeth and stung by blades.

A few steps closer to the goal.
Sasaki makes their way through a winding system of old flow, a carved out escape tunnel. The inside of this keep are barren and eaten through with mold. Hardly a base. These brigands lead a small life.

A few of their number are struggling to equip old plate and broken cuirass, while others advance on our formation.

A quick scout of the inner keep does not reveal the Bandit Leader, or much in the way of a ritual site of fallen villagers. So why the headless corpse? Why this odd cut well that reeks gently with old blood?

In the face of Karna's stoic advance one brigand decides better of the fight and turns to run.

A hound sniffs along the path carefully and, spotting fresh prey, lets slip a mighty howl that rolls through the old keep!

In essence, these are hardened walls heavn from solid rock intended to shelter a group of warriors. It is likely an old abode from Vanadian's storied past. Perhaps a knight chapterhouse? It explains the banner.

The walls are reinforced and even if crumbling, will take a lot to break. They have 25 HP, 15 DR. To break through them will take a while.

The Court Hound dashes off and through a wall. It does not consider mere material impediment adequate hindrance. With a splintering cacophony of breaking wood a monstrous thing bubbles from the other side of the Keep. A bedraggled core of bleeding Lanterns drag their battered, beaten bodies back to to the ruins of Imai. Something lingers in the back of their collective minds, this insidious thought: what was that Spriteling? Why this? Why here? Why now?

None were taken alive to answer for the monstrous act or the slow, steady trickle of abominable deeds that would have led there. We are without much information.

Yet the battered remains of the Vanguard Thug's armor, plating and fighting style all indicate a uniformity of purpose that speaks of Mercenary Outfits and the Red Markets. Someone with means hired this trio of competent fighters to watch over their lesser peers. One need simply follow the clinking sound of coin on the winding way it takes to become a shiv in someone's heart.

Or perhaps we have some other mean to find our foe? A report needs to be made. An accounting given.

So much was lost today for so little information. Mysteries unveiled reveal more mysteries. But we've given too much to stop now.

They say Entropos sees through the eyes of the dead. What about the corpse of that headless villagers? Maybe I can gather information from it using my convocations. If that incarnated Spriteling is no longer around, maybe we can investigate the bloodied room in detail. We should also make it a habit of taking at least a few prisoners.

If there aren't any leads, I suppose we will have to sleuth around the Red Markets.

Making your way to the abattoir atop the keep, pushing past lingering flames and fighting through those that you can push past, you find the chamber coated as you left it with a thin patina of other people's insides.
But that is all.
No corpses remain. Someone has spent meticulous care and focus to arrange the sprays of blood in overlapping concentric patterns.
And despite this, Aife gets the sense that they are somehow all still alive.

The choking fumes from below drive you back. We may be able to find some trace of the Spriteling Prince if we search this place proper. Some things can be hidden in the carnage. But the keep is gutted and may collapse beneath our feet.

While the choking smoke burns the lungs at least one can maintain the steady pulse of adrenaline. Sweat-soaked and ash stained, we search the bloody chamber quickly. There is little time to UNDERSTAND the intricacies of the their odd arrangement.

Jin-Han stumbles, slips on a pool of black-white blood, tries to catch himself, finds the odd gunk mixing with his wounds and scrapes. It stings, vision growing faint.

The blood has a strange pallour, bereft of colour, and small piece of human bone have been embedded into the walls and the room, crunching beneath our boots. Did someone explode here?

Aife breaks an arm as a part of the wall collapses inwards from a hurled rock. It appears Karna is haphazardly throwing stones at the crumbling keep everyone else is inside.

Our quick scavenge turns up some useful tools - a purse of gold, Vanadian, a likely part of what pays for this design, and, an odd, old set of engraving tools that appear so light as to mark the air, each needle and thread of it pristine in the ravages of the smoke. Kicking open a lockbox while snapping breaths from the dwindling air (the building occasionally shakes now as it is bombarded with heavy rocks, the crumbling floor sagging, the old broken load bearing walls pushed beyond their limit by explosives and violence).

The floor begins to give away. At least there is time for a prayer.

Ah, if only Imai still stood, serene, quiet and peaceful. Then one could find a warm bed and a welcome smile. But Imai is ash and corpses. We can spend a shivering night curled in our tents near this place, trying to patch myriad wounds with scant bandages and few supplies.

They tell it well: Never one day the same as a Lantern.

The captain leaves with the early dawn hour. Friends in the Vanadian Inspectorate, that one. Perhaps it is time to ply favours and trade tales and find a code-cracker.

The gradual reknitting of our broken bones and shattered forms is left to us. There are graves to dig in the grand knowledge that the people going in them leave the world a better place for their passing. And there is a fallen friend to honour and recall, with grace and glory.

It means you need a hand free to use the Path of the Rope. That means Rope + Shield. Not Rope + Shield + Sword. You can wield two daggers and the Ropes, however.

But it does at least seem that there may be some interesting remnants among these broken bodies. The few bodies that remain from the bandits all wear uniform SCARS that must have been INKED INTO THEM by the CURIOUS ENGRAVING KIT that was recovered from the BURNING KEEP. A convocant (of which we have a few) would be able to use this to inscribe sigils that draw the attention of the Icons gently, beseechingly, and this at least may alleviate the pain and suffering that everyone is currently going through. It may also explain the horrendous...

aftermath of this charred oddity. The Bandit Leader was inscribed with dark swirls, much like the concentrically splattered blood of the burnt keep. This was a ritual, lead by someone careful in the practice. The Leader must have attempted to ward himself with more sigils to draw deeper on the Icon of TrDrak. We saw him pull a Pure Nightgaunt from his very flesh.

It appears that he drew too much, too readily, too deeply, unheeding of his own limits.

But Aife knows that drawing on the arts of the Icons is no easy, simple task. The Bandit Leader would have needing schooling, practice and training to accomplish this fact. It is far more likely he has a far ally somewhere. Perhaps... related to the coded correspondence? Perhaps an outside professional? Their relationship parasitically symbiotic: the brigands and bandits to find and kidnap people, the Artist to further their design, and both for the glimpses of Power...

We forward this Clue to the Captain via special Courier. It will greatly aid in deciphering the correspondence.

It is not. One does not seek to kill if one uses the Rope. It still can. The Houndmaster was deadly enough and whip-crack lethal. A rope can disarm, move you, trip someone, grab items, climb things, tie someone up, grapple at range, steal small items. One uses a rope as a weapon if one intends to win rather than simply murder. You can stab anyone to death. It is not so hard, Lantern.

It takes proper skill to wrap a length of coil around their throat in the dark and suffocate them with one hand from seven yards away while warding off another blow with your sword-hand.

If you can move around people speedily, their blind angles will make them easier to strike. If you are engaged one on one, however, expect them to simply turn with you. A run-around attack like this may give someone -2 to their defence.

It may be possible for you to BLITZ a foe, if you take a Major Action and roll vs 10+Speed. Should this BLITZ succeed, you are focusing your reactions on a single moment. For the next activity you take, people need a reaction equal to the margin on your roll or you move faster than they can perceive.

You may not be fragile but the sad truth of the world is that it breaks far too readily. With this ability to hew rock out of the way, you consider another path also: your gauntlets. With enough focus and careful attention you could squeeze rock apart and liquefy granite in your hands.

Your question is self answering. If a sharp blade cuts for 1d6, and a negation blade is bound with 4 points, the negation blade will strike with 4 points. It will be a sword. A sword forged by your heart of hearts and sharper than molecules could ever allow.

The after-effects are the true horror, as bits and pieces of the world are cut away and passed on to the Court, granting boons with each strike. A fire blade would burn, and light things on fire, and shed heat. A negative blade simply removes.

but why seek to add more murder to a world awash with it? Fashion a shield from your regalia, gird yourself in small sewn plates of holes in the world, bind yourself a spear with reach, or an umbrella to always eat the rain.
