The water is sweet. The bread is soft.
The floorboards creak. The chair, it rocks.

The night is quiet. The fire is warm.
Malona Trim's alone at home,
The first before a village stood;
It ends a path. It borders woods.

Three blessings she recounts at eve
She knows how time must take and give...
But trusts that she will see it through.
Come morn, an outing's overdue.

>Three remain to her, but which?
The Wits: There is fog, but sun prevails.
The Health: Fire before, but also within.
The Estate: Hard-earned and proudly maintained.
The Family: Love and all its flourishing.

To sounds of crackle and of creak,
She rocks piecemeal to gentle sleep.

Her dreams have never wandered far,
But waking-ordered ever are.
To Lew she left the waking dreams,
Her husband's witless lucky schemes.

He and she made path here first.
Then grew the Village of his and hers.
When Empire's roads at last came 'round,
They and theirs erected Town.

In Town her children live and trade.
And though they plead she come their way,
In Village Malona stays.
The forest is where Lew is laid.

The rest by weariness is stayed
'Til she awakes where count was torn.
Wakes she early, then, or warm?

>Early: The fire is out, and the body restless.
>Warm: The woodpile is high, and the servants keep all hours.

When she wakes, the smoke still curls.
Beside her is the breakfast girl.
The dish has cooled. Malona eats
With hard-transferred dexterity.

One wrist against her heart is bound;
T'would stretch old sores to let it down.
A worthy tale of payment dear,
But all the servants know it here.

An Outing, then, and business too!
The landed's affairs are not few.
This is the age that blessings fade,
Sooner still if not maintained.

>The Wits: Are tales worth telling now? (Pick one Blessed)
>The Health: It hurts the body to move; the soul to not. Too late, perhaps.
>The Estate: The vacated Village is refilled with memory and ornament.
>The Family: They in Town or he in Forest? (Pick one)

Estate's servants can, twice a day,
Be called to work out of their way
As Mistress please, they here, she there,
Ere things slide to-ward disrepair.

>Servants to the Estate: They can be trusted without her inspection.
>Servants to the Forest: The Soiltusks fear her personally, but perhaps the servants carry her infamy.
>Neither: Malona will do things herself.

A tour of frontier Village Trim:
The statues sport un-beast-like grins,
Though they depict (excepting one)
Fierce boars surviving spear and gun.

In a former home is stored
Old things of they of Village born.
Decorous children do not fit
The storied toys and clothes in it.

A second house devoted to
The Soiltusks at last put through.
Their sinews woven, bones arranged,
Their bristles brushed, their tusks engraved.

And other memories besides,
In farmshed, hunt-lodge, third reside.
And all within is color-drenched
By glass not from the Forest wrenched.

A little dust, but nothing wrong.
Mistress ‘lona carries on.

Into the Forest, valley down,
‘cross the river, to the mound.
Ignore the rustles as she goes
Nothing squeals at her approach.

Offerings of food and beer
Have only ever molded here.
Lew, though fool from dawn to dusk,
Had understanding with the ‘tusks.

But seemingly by hooved herd,
The offerings now lie disturbed.

>Wits: Regardless, Lew would have wanted to hear the latest, and reminisce.
>Health: The Forest knows the mark it gave. Does it still respect it?
>Estate: An intrusion shall be treated so.
>Family: To call now is hope against hope. But hope.

The children first. The eldest one
Came home last week, returned a nun,
Her order charged with charity
To those with no home but the streets.

The second carries well the Hunt.
His marriage, too, is without want.
The third, by dint of industry
The tradehouse of the Town now leads.

And other gossip: Sheep-thieves caught,
Taxes rising, apricots
Are soon to season, and tomorrow,
A festival will watch for swallows.

Sounds of snort and rustle both,
But nothing leaves the undergrowth.

>Wits: Speak on. There is an order to these things.
>Health: Challenge them. See if they believe their debt repaid.

Remember what a layabout
Was Lew who sought a farmer's daughter?
How ennui boiled into work,
When his flame made eyes at his father!

A worthier boy he made himself
And turned those lovely eyes his way.
But, stifled by that worthy life,
He bade her follow him away

To moonlit paths and walks in rain
And bivouacs in open fields.
To swim with fish and run with deer
And see the heather in the hills,
And how the earth rewards endeavor...
... With hard years, Malona said.
And thus refused. But not forever.

>Wits: For all there is to say, nothing interrupts.
>Health: ... But they grow bolder.
>Estate: This place was carved out against those that would carve it back.

Hello, all. Thanks for playing so far. I'm unexpectedly busy and also not the fastest composer, so an update is unlikely in the next 16 hours. Sorry for the delay. Hope to catch you tomorrow with three updates, if response allows.
