The Lighthouse War is over, but conflict still continues.

With Erusea's defeat at the hands of the Osean Federation and the International United Nations, the imperial nation has splintered into a confusing mess of separatists, freedom fighters, warlords, rogue military factions, and those seeking to profit from the chaos. Worse, Erusea's many automated drone factories still remain intact, waiting for new masters to come to claim them.

The Usean continent remains in crisis, and it's up to a new generation of pilots to face this next generation threat...

You are MILLY, the "Red Tail", a Belkan Air Force pilot fighting for the IUN!

Comona Island didn't seem like too bad of a place. While Comona was technically an archipelago of smaller islands, it was the largest one that was of any interest to anybody. Apparently, due to its location, Comona was considered an ideal location for a spaceport.

That would be the Riass Space Center, the primary draw to the Comona Islands. You heard Comona had fallen on somewhat tough times with the construction of the Lighthouse, the space elevator negating the need for conventional rocket launches. However, with the destruction of the global satellite network and the Lighthouse only operating at a fraction of its capacity, it seemed like business was booming on Comona once again.

Already, ships and planes were packing the harbor and airport as both countries and corporations were lining up desperately to get fresh satellites back into orbit as quickly as possible. Sure, all the space debris was still going to be a problem, but it looked like they were willing to take the risk.

Right now, though, you were just flying in with your squadron, the Gullinbursti trailing behind. Looks like Bandit still needed to meet with whoever was in charge of the island to let them know the IUN was coming.

"Wow, this is the first time I've seen a spaceport..." Vicky marvels, her Gripen tilting so she can get a better look. "Red, have you ever though about going to space?"

"Eh, not really." You reply noncommittally. "Space doesn't really interest me all that much. Got plenty enough to worry about down here."

"I suppose you have a point." Misono agrees.

"Still, that's a bit disappointing to hear." Vicky sighs, obviously a bit bummed.

"What, you wanted to become an astronaut or something?" You tease.

"M-maybe!" Vicky 's voice starts sounding flustered at the unexpected question. "If you want to fly the highest and fastest, space is where you go!"

"Hm, maybe you're right." You say as you glance a the dark blue skies above.

"Raven Squadron, this is Comona Control. You are clear to land." The flight controller announces, shaking you all back to reality.

As your squadron lands on the lone airstrip at Comona Base, you're interrupted by a shockwave that sends rattles through your Su-30. You glance out your canopy to see a rocket lifting off into the sky, its engines flaring like miniature suns. Guess that's why the flight controller wanted you on the ground as quick as possible.

"I'm going to brief the base commander and try and get back into contact with the Andersen." Bandit explains. "The WCS planes should be catching up soon, too."

"We will explore the base. See what amenities it can provide." Misono smile as she pats Vicky on the shoulder.

Well, you figure you should be a good little sidekick and tag along with Bandit. See what the heck was going on around here.

"I'll tag along with you, Boss." You say, taking position to his side.

"All right then." Bandit nods and turns to Misono and Vicky. "Stay out of trouble, you two."

"Of course!" Misono salutes. "I'll be sure to keep an eye on Vicky!"

"What's that supposed to mean!?" Vicky glowers while saluting as well.

And so you follow Bandit over the tarmac as he makes his way to what looks to be the main admin building. You take a quick look around at the base, and could tell that Comona Base wasn't really all that large. Nothing more than a small garrison base for self defense purposes. To reflect this, the base's air wing looked to be rather old and ragtag, consisting mainly of F-5s, F-20s, and the occasional F-16. Guess you could see why the were willing to shell out for a high maintenance PMC like Wild Card Security.

And then that got you wondering. It seemed Sam was on familiar terms with Bandit, and Karla, too. Yet you don't really remembering seeing him around before joining up with Raven Squadron. Given all the intrigue that's been going on now, you wonder if there wasn't something more behind it all.

Well, the both of you were relatively alone at the moment. There wasn't anybody close enough to overhear anything the two of you said...

"You should know by now that a woman like Sam pretty much knows everyone." Bandit shrugs simply and keeps walking along at a casual pace.

Damn, you couldn't suss out whether he was being straight with you or not. You're about to try and press the issue when you suddenly find yourself at the front of the admin building.

"All right, stay calm. I'll do all the talking." Bandit instructs as he enters.

Quickly enough, you both are ushered through the building to the base commander's office. A Colonel Marshall, or something. As you enter the office, you see the poor man obviously has had quite a few sleepless nights.

"You know." He sighs, motioning for the both of you to sit down. "When the IUN promised support, I was expecting something a bit more... substantial than a single squadron."

"We're only the advance force. Our main fleet has run into complications en route here."

"Natural ones?" Marshall raises an eyebrow.

"Unknown forces attempting to blockade our path." Bandit explains. "WCS tells me you seem to be having similar issues."

"Somebody's launching constant drone attacks at the spaceport." Marshall shakes his head as he motions to his window, which as an admittedly nice view of the space launch facility. "Not only do they risk destroying billions of dollars in property value, but they're also delaying launch windows and timetables, preventing us from being able to restore the global communication network."

"And I assume there's been no demands or claims of responsibility." Bandit narrows his eyes.

"None. We're completely in the dark on who may be behind this." Marshall shakes his head. "WCS is more than enough to hold off the drone attacks, but it's putting a lot unnecessary stress and strain on my people."

"I understand." Bandit nods. "Is there anything we can do to help?"

"If you have a way to hunt down the bastards behind this and put them to the bottom of the ocean, I'm all ears." Marshall says grimly.

"C'mon, Boss! We can totally hunt them down!" You blurt out.

"Well, it seems like this is the type of threat we don't want the Andersen coming near, anyways." Bandit sighs and turns back to Marshall. "I assume you've been trying to hail the Andersen this entire time?"

"We are, but the communication network in this area still hasn't been restored yet." Marshall shakes his head. "We won't be able to make contact with them until they get into our radio range."

"We'll likely have to send someone back to link up with the Andersen." Bandit grunts. "I might just send Swordfish and Knives back to handle it."

It does make me realize that most of these super carriers don't really have weapons designed to fight other super carriers since they're generally up against planes and conventional ships. With a few exceptions to those armed with cruise, and burst missiles.

"Sounds like a good idea." You nod.

"Commander, do you have any reconaissance or anti-submarine assets here?" Bandit then asks.

"We have a few frigates and maritime patrol planes." Marshall nods. "But their anti-air capabilities aren't that great. I can task some of my birds to help air escort, but they're not really suited to ranging out to far from the base, and I'd rather keep as much air defense near the spaceport as possible."

"Can't we ask Sam for help?" You ask Bandit.

"I can authorize it." Marshall nods. "But I can't let both her planes and the Gullinbursti head out at the same time. We need to maintain our own defenses."

"I think Lara and Wolf would be enough, right?" You grin at Bandit.

"Just one of them is basically an entire air wing unto themselves." Bandit nods in agreement. "I think that can work."

"Still, that's a lot of ocean out there." Marshall points out. "And I can't even begin to imagine how to narrow down the search area."

"We were ambushed by sea launched drones on the way to the island." Bandit explains. "I'm betting that whoever is crewing that submersible carrier also knows the Andersen is coming, and is preparing an ambush."

"Which means it has to be near the western sea routes." Marshall's eyes light up. "Yes,we can work with that."

"We'll also coordinate with WCS over how to best proceed on a tactical level." Bandit continues. "Is there anything else you need?"

"Just get that damn sub out of our waters." Marshall says grimly.

"Yes sir." Bandit gives a quick salute and you follow his motion.

And with that, the meeting is over. Marshall goes back to fretting over his air defense setup while you and Bandit head outside.

"Anyways, I'll go meet with Samantha to further iron out the mission details." Bandit explains. "You should go catch up with Misono and Vicky and let them know what's going on."

And they're easy enough to find, standing right next to an F-22 and F-15 bearing the Wild Card logo. Vicky and Misono were ogling the two state of the art planes, which were leagues ahead of what the Comona Island garrison had access to.

"They're so BIG!" Vicky marvels at the heavy fighters.

"Or maybe you're just real small!" Lara laughs heartily as she headpats the shorter pilot, much to Vicky's chagrin.

"I am rather jealous." Misono sighs. "Perhaps one day I'll have a similar plane.

"Don't sweat it. You just have to work your way up to it!" Wolf grins, arms crossed like the smug asshole he is. "Besides, and F-2 and Gripen aren't all that bad, either!"

"Perhaps he has his reasons." Misono says in a measured tone. "I don't personally know him, but in my experience people don[t act like this out of the blue."

"Ugh, I guess it can't be helped." You groan. "God they're so hopeless."

"Well, we can only let things take their natural course." Misono says sagely. "You cannot force love, after all!"

"Sure would like to sometimes, though." You grunt.

"A-anyways!' Vicky yelps, trying to change the subject. "What did you find out from your meeting with the base commander?"

"Oh, right." You nod, remembering Bandit's orders. "Uh, you and Misono are gonna have to fly back to the Andersen to update them on what's going on here."

"Ah, is that so?" Misono seems to sag. "That means you and Bandit will have the honor of hunting down the enemy, correct?"

"Yeah, pretty much." You confirm. "Sorry, but it was Bandit's call."

"Well, good luck and good hunting, then!' Vicky says, gripping your hand in hers. "D-don't get hurt or anything while we're gone!"

"Heh, yeah, I'll try not to do that." You reassure her.

Well, hopefully this sub hunt will go off a hitch.

Hopefully.

"Red, status check." Bandit says simply.

"Everything's green, Boss." You sigh loudly. "What, you're afraid the Comona ground crew don't know what they're doing?"

"Can never be too careful." Bandit replies simply.

It had already been a couple days since first arriving at Comona. Vicky and Misono had already departed to link up with the Anderson, but still hadn't returned, which was a bit worrying. However, there was no time to think about that.

Currently, you were flying security for an anti-submarine patrol group, heading out to sniff out a suspected submersible carrier harassing Comona. It was a modest, but still sizeable force of five frigates and a pair of P-3 Orions.

Also accompanying you were Lara and Wolf from Wild Card Security. Sure, it was just the two of them, but they were literally the best pilots money could buy, at least in your opinion.

"Raven Squadron, this is Seagull 1, we're going to start our search our search pattern." The lead P-3 announces. "We're counting on you to keep the skies clear while we do our work."

"Roger that." Bandit responds.

"Hey, Bandit, can't we just try to bait that sub out like you did last time?" Lara wonders, her F-15X pulling alongside his older F-15E. "It could really help narrow down the search area!"

"That was by accident, and there's no guarantee it would react the same way." Bandit grunts.

"Ah, but they're drones. They pretty much always behave the same way, right?" Wolf counters.

"Hmmmm." Bandit pauses.

"We really should just stick close to the task force." You side with Bandit. "I get the feeling they'll come out sooner or later."

"Awwwww, fine." Lara grouses.

"Babysitting it is!' Wolf affirms as his F-22 climbs up to a higher altitude. "Since I've got the best radar out of all of you I guess I'll be our improve AWACS!"

"Oh please no." You groan.

"Well, he's not THAT bad at it." Lara says apologetically.

"I can hear you two, you know!" Wolf grunts.

Well, anyways, it seems all there is to do is sit back and let Seagull do their work.

On a whim, you glance down at the water, which was a nice, sapphire blue. As expected of the warm, tropical climate in this part of the world. This far out, it was just ocean as far as the eye could see, with only the Comona Islands in the distant horizon behind you.

And then your eyes catch movement on the water. Small, dark dots with white foamy wakes dragging behind them. It seemed like a dozen or so boats?

"Hey, Seagull, I see a bunch of boats coming from the north. Those guys with you?" You ask.

"Hold on."

You see Seagull 1 drop altitude to get a closer look. However, almost immediately, tracer rounds lance through the air as the boats open fire.

"Drone boats! Drone boats! They are hostile!" Seagull 1 yelps as his plane rapidly climbs to get out of range.

What, they had freaking drone BOATS now? Was nothing safe from this freaking AI menace?!

"Looks like they're only lightly armed." One of the Frigates, Drake 2, speaks up. "We can handle these things."

"All right, we'll leave it up to you guys, then." You say.

And that's when you see the frigates turn to face the oncoming drone boats, pouring heavy cannon fire into the formation from long range. It looked like they had things handled, but as long as they were fighting, your only assets capable of sniffing out that sub were the two P-3s.

"All right, good luck you two!" Lara says cheerfully as she and Wolf break off with Seagull 2.

"Don't jinx it." Wolf sighs.

Yep, Lara hasn't changed much last you saw her, that's for sure.

"Seagull, stick to your attack run! I'll keep any drones off of you!" You assure them as you dive in ahead the big, lumbering maritime patrol bird.

"This thing can't exactly turn on a dime, so we're counting on you!" Seagull 1 replies as they continue to drop lower to get into attack range.

At this point, the drones were already starting to break out of the water. MQ-101s, as you expected. You knew that Bandit was up high to provide support, but he'd be to high up to able to properly intercept them as they came out of the water.

You could try nailing them as they launched, but committing to an attack like that would leave Seagull vulnerable if you couldn't get them all on your first pass.

Unfortunately, the MQ-101s don't even seem to be phased by Bandit's presence as he dives down from above. They immediately split into multiple directions, foiling his attack run.

"Damn! It's up to you, Red!" Bandit grunts in frustration as he tries to reacquire targets, his F-15 leveling out.

This unfortunately meant that there wasn't anything stopping the MQ-101s that broke away in your direction from zeroing in on you and Seagull 1. This was going to be rough.

You let out a long burst of cannon fire, which tears into the lead MQ-101 and it spins out of control as a third of its body is sheared off. The hapless drone plummets down towards the water, where you can see it slam down into what looks like... an antenna sticking out of the water?

Suddenly, the rest of the drones all practically fall out of the sky, crashing into the water below as if someone had just switched them off.

And then when the water starts foaming and bubbling again, that's when it hits you. That antenna sticking out of the water must have been what was sending command signals to the drones! Which meant-

Your train of thought is interrupted when a massive submarine emerges from the water. All along its broad spine, you could see launch tubes where the drones had been coming out of. This was definitely the target, all right.

"Holy crap!' Seagull 1 curses. "It's gigantic!"

And that's when you seen countless hatches opening up to reveal drone launchers, SAMs, and AA guns sprouting from the hull. Looks like this sub wasn't going down without a fight!

"I'm already calling in reinforcements!" Seagull 1 shouts as he breaks off.
We just need to hold out until then!"

"Screw that! It might escape by then!" You scowl.

You bank towards the massive submarine, and your missile warning system was already screaming warnings as you.

"I hope you know what you're doing, Red." Bandit grunts as his F-15 swings around to hit the submarine from the opposite end.

"Of course!" You laugh.

You do a quick read on the submarine's status. Right now, you could see the immediate threats were the drone launchers and AA emplacements. If you could knock those out, you'd pretty much knock out the sub's only offensive and defensive power. Then again, you could see a tall communications mast jutting out from the submarine's command tower. That had to be their backup antenna!

Or you could try hitting its engines and ballast tanks to prevent it from being able to escape.

You angle for the submarine's main antenna. If you could take that out, you'd basically eliminate their ability to use their drones! Or at the very least hamper their effectiveness.

However, that meant you were going to have to run the gauntlet of drones and AA defenses littered all over the submarine before you could get a good shot in. It as going to be tricky....

And that's when you notice a critical flaw in the design of the submarine. All of the AA emplacements were built into the flanks of the massive vehicle, all with the assumption that aerial opponents would be approaching from the sides to attack. But there was one avenue they didn't think of covering, because frankly, they probably thought nobody would be crazy enough to take it.

All you had to do was fly straight down the spine of the submarine.

Now, granted, the dorsal area was where all of the vertical launch missile tubes, converted into drone launchers, were located. Every tube you flew over, there was chance a drone would pop out at the same time, which would result in an ugly crash.

But you were in the goddamn zone right now! You effortlessly weave around and over the drone launch tubes, dodging drones and sporadic AA fire as you hurtle directly at the conning tower. Your HUD lets know you have a solid lock and you let your missiles fly...

Your missiles slam directly into the building sized conning tower, setting off powerful secondary explosions that shatter the conning tower like glass. The secondary explosions continue to ripple across parts of the submarine, and the great open wound where its conning tower used to be start belching smoke and flame.

"Holy crap! That was an amazing shot!" Seagull one marvels.

"Good job, Red. The submarine's turning away now." Bandit says.

Sure enough, the submarine was slewing around in an attempt to escape. Even with the entire damn tower blown off and with no way to control its drones, it was still a formidable threat. All those damn weapons emplacements meant it still had teeth.

However, at this point, the Sea Drake frigates were beginning to catch up, running down the submarine like a pack of wolves chasing a wounded deer.

Oh no, you were gonna be the one to finish it off! You already went this far!

"Sorry, Boss, but I'm itching to have a super sub with my kill markers! You laugh as you turn and dive down on the submarine yet again.

"Red! RED!" Bandit barks.

You grin as you make another attack run on the submarine. However, this time the AA emplacements were prepared and send up a storm of missiles and tracers your way.

Unfortunately, the sub's AA defenses have finally started to catch on to your tactics, and you're barely able to dodge away from a storm of AA gun fire and missiles. Looks like you weren't going to be able to approach it from the air anytime soon.

However, by this point, the Sea Drakes had caught up with the submarine and they were starting to launch missiles at it, as well as riddling the hull with their heavy cannons.

Well, you tried, you guess.

"Red, we're going to have words when we get back." Bandit says sternly.

Well shit.

"Hey, what the heck? Don't tell me it's already over?!" Lara groans as she and Wolf finally arrive on the scene.

"Pretty much." Bandit informs her. "Red dealt the crippling blow to it."

"You're damn right!" You harumph.

"Agh! Leave some fun for the rest of us!"

"I'll think about it." You chuckle.

"All right, I think the navy can handle things from here." Bandit concludes. "We should be heading back."

"Back to where?" You wonder.

I guess that sort of explains a few things about her character, and motivation. Though it could change later on.

Just like her favourite Belkan Ace.
Though desu he's probably soldier himself, Grun are more mercenary.
>>
>>3803386
The line between Knight and Mercenary can potentially be much harder to find since both can have a bit of ego in their motivation.

I'm thinking she's a Merc since Mercs fight for money, fame, or personal glory.

"To Comona. We're low on fuel so we don't have the luxury of going looking for the Andersen." Bandit concludes.

"Sure thing." You nod as you turn your Su-30 eastwards. "Stripes, Wolf, what are you two gonna do?"

"We've still got plenty of fuel since we totally missed the action." Lara sighs. "I think we'll stick around a little longer to keep an eye on things.

"All right, see you later, then." You say as you bank your Su-30 away to follow Bandit out.

"Red, I know you've had a string of successes and big kill so far." Bandit says over your private squadron channel. "Just don't let all that success get to your head. That sort of overconfidence gets pilots killed."

Jeez, where the heck was all this coming from all of a sudden?

Well, regardless, you bagged a freaking drone launching supersub today! Even if it wasn't a complete kill, it still felt good knowing you made a difference.

You could get used to this feeling, actually...

>I'm thinking she's a Merc since Mercs fight for money, fame, or personal glory.

I'd say that far more strongly applies to Karla. She unlike Milly doesn't seem to have any kind of patriotic or political commitment driving her.

On the other hand, while Milly is an agressive pilot, i don't see any indication of a mercenary spirit.
She's definitely more of a Belkan knight in spirit (National honor, the Revanchist politics, an emphasis on group loyalty), etc.

I cannot foresee a scenario where Milly would would ever let a paycheck determine what side she fights on. Even beyond the matter of Belka, I think she would let her ideals guide her.

I wish i could say the same for Karla, but I really cant. Short of refusing to work for actual cartoon villains, she's a merc through and through
>>
>>3803985
Karla’s ideals are more personal than Milly’s. She’s still got a strong sense of honor, it just isn’t bound to any particular nation, which is understandable considering how messed up her childhood was.
>>
>>3803839
No, we will instead adopt Vicky as a full Belkan to look out for us. Mostly for keeping up with our shit and bailing us out of bad spots.

Last thing we need is for Milly's Belkan Pride, or personal ego to swell to the point that a single loss will break her resolve.

On a mechanical level, Karla rolled a crit when it came to confronting Milly over her OB affiliation.

On a narrative level, Karla was willing to give Milly a chance to redeem herself and even pulled strings to get her into the Belkan Air Force in the first place.

The inevitable clash of ideals promises to be an epic shitshow.

Cannot wait for her and Bandit to get into a heated argument over some random thing and then her calling him out on his career of Belkan Killing.

The failure of Belka not only in the Belkan War but elsewhere clearly highlights the main problem. Belka always fights alone. Key needs to be to build up an Anti Osean coalition. Not really a fan of commies but Yuktobania and a restored Erusea would be the clear choices as allies.
>>
>>3807667
>Belka
>Yuktobania
>allies
I doubt the Yukes would trust the country that manipulated them into a war that nearly turned nuclear. They'd be more likely to ally with Osea against Belka, like they did in the Belkan war.
