You are Edgar Tristan Rood, child of the Executor who happens to be the overseer of the Holy Grail War that you are participating in.

Unfortunately, you don't know what day it is at the moment, nor how long you've been fighting this Holy Grail War alongside Saber. Over the first few days, you summoned your Servant during a misunderstanding with the now-deceased Agrippa Brigante, officially entered the magic battle royale as a matter of principle, carried a very attractive girl named Charlotte through a hail of Archer's arrows, and began building trust with your new neighbor Rider.
On the next leg of your violent odyssey, you discovered the terrifying enemy Servant, Shielder, and very nearly killed his Master, the Einzbern. Lancer alarmed you with evidence suggesting that there’s a humanoid, carnivorous predator of some sort wandering about, and it may not even be related to the Grail War. Of course, you immediately reported this to your mother, the overseer. After that, you deduced Shielder’s identity and had your first heart-to-heart with your Servant.
Following that, you found and promptly fled from a battle between Shielder and Berserker only to fall prey to a trap set by the Einzbern, barely escaping with your life. Charlotte approached you to exchange information about the War. After another chat with Saber, a strange message lead you into a chaotic battle at the isolated mansion of Alceste Lucroy.
Once the chaos settled, Lucroy tried to kill you, and Charlotte came to your aid. Lucroy's death gained you a strange canister with heavy-duty magical locks. While searching for a way to open it, you were ambushed by (and managed to kill) Shielder, and took his Master to the church for protection. The next night, you received grave injuries in a battle with Archer's Master and lost consciousness. Upon awakening, you found yourself in a luxurious bed under the watchful eye of a bizarrely dressed maid...

“Where am I?” you ask. The only hint you have as to your whereabouts are the woman’s looks. Her appearance is an awful lot like Ilonasviel, with red eyes, pale skin, and white hair. Is she an Einzbern, too? Does that mean you’re in the hotel?

“You, in guest room. Badly injured.” The maid speaks with a soft, monotone voice, face inexpressive. Her speech pattern is slow, awkward, and incomplete, but it’s comprehensible nonetheless. She didn’t tell you exactly what you wanted to know, but it looks like you can get somewhere if you keep asking questions.

“Guest room?” your query continues. “Of what building?”

“Manor. City, not safe. Manor is outside city, so safe.”

Wait, a manor? The Einzberns have a mansion near the city? You’re surprised that neither of the files you found made any mention of it. Perhaps more confusing is the statement that the city isn’t safe. A hotel smack in the middle of downtown, where people are concentrated, should be impossible to prosecute the War in, shouldn't it? You elect not to ponder further, though, and focus on your more immediate problem.

“What direction is the city from here?”

“Mmm… That way,” the maid says, pointing across your body with her finger.

“I see,” you say, feeling a bit less than elucidated. However, you do, in a sense, know where you are now. “Thanks.”

“Mm.” She nods and smiles faintly, as though happy to have been of service.

At that moment, the door to the room past the foot of the bed opens, revealing the petite form of Ilonasviel. She looks just as surprised to find you awake as you are to see her here. Shouldn’t she be at the church?

“Ursula,” Ilonasviel orders the maid, “you are dismissed.”

“Yes, Ilona.” Ursula departs, carrying the massive weapon with her like it’s nothing.

“Are you feeling well?” Ilonasviel asks, sitting on the edge of the bed beside you.

“Sore, but a lot better than I was,” you reply. “Why are you here? I thought you were-”

“Silence,” Ilonasviel commands you, her countenance stern. “I’m asking the questions.” Your inquiry is cut off more by your own astonishment than any authority of Ilonasviel’s. She’s almost unrecognizable from the terrified, defeated Master you met before. Her statement clearly indicates that you are a prisoner being interrogated. Whatever happened while you were unconscious, it completely inverted the positions you and she held not too long ago - or at least, it was brief in your perception.

“Why did you take me to the church?” your captor carries on. “You could have killed me, or left me, or taken me prisoner. Explain yourself."

>>3829873
>>>”I didn’t want you to get hurt. It seemed like the best way to ensure your safety.”
This one feels the most true. Edgar took her to the Church because that's what happens to defeated Masters, full stop. As much as I wish it were option 3.
>>
>>3829901
It should still confuse her even more
>Try to kill guy 3 times
>"I don't want you to get hurt"
>>
>>3829901
That's why I added the "You were no longer a threat" bit to mine. It's just a little colder but still honest and kind.
>>
>>3829913
>wanting to be colder to her
But why?
Our life is sort of in her hands right now.
>>
>>3829917
She needs to be harsher if she wants the D.
>>
>>3829919
She's harsh enough.
>>
>>3829873
>>”I didn’t want you to get hurt. It seemed like the best way to ensure your safety.”
>>
>>3829926
It's a faux harshness. If she wants to be top bitchthe only kind of girl Edgar likes she needs to start performing under pressure.
>>
>>3829940
But Edgar isn't the one who's harsh.
He has a heart of gold.
...at least towards women.

He agreed to fight in the war solely for Saber's sake.
He agreed to escort Charlotte for effectively nothing
Then he both spared Ilonasviel and took her to safety.
>>
>>3829873
>>”I didn’t want you to get hurt. It seemed like the best way to ensure your safety.”
>>
>>3829955
She was an enemy, unlike the other two. While that is hot it isn't endearing.
>>
>>3829961
But Edgar loves it when attractive girls almost kill him.
>>
>>3829989
He loves girls that are fun or hyper competent while trying to kill him. The Einzbern was just kind of there being awful.
>>
>>3830014
Well we'll just have to see how her relationship with Edgar develops from here.
>>
“I didn’t want you to get hurt,” you reply, like the answer is plain as day. “It seemed like the best way to ensure your safety.”

“That is exactly what I don’t understand!” Ilonasviel says angrily. “How can you possibly harbor good will towards someone who tried to kill you three times?”

“It’s not as though you were in a position to fight back. Is it weird to want to preserve life when I can?” you ask, scratching your head.

“Even when that life tried to end your own, you would save it simply because it is a life?” The silver-haired girl fixes you with a vexed look. ”You are an enigma.” You don’t think it’s a very complicated stance, yet Ilonasviel struggles to comprehend it. She hops off the bed and begins to pace back and forth. While she says nothing further to you, she does not leave. Perhaps she’s just mulling something over.

You lay back, staring lazily into the luxurious canopy. While your left side is healed, the soreness detracts from your will to move it, as does the comfort provided by the warm bed. A slight chill compels you to slide your arm back under the covers in spite of the stiffness. It finally registers with you that your clothing is minimal, outfit comprised only of underwear. The rest was likely destroyed and discarded during the treatment you received while unconscious. Noticeably absent, much to your displeasure, is your anti-magic amulet. You hope it hasn’t been done away with.

While taking mental inventory, you decide to test your connection to Saber. You don’t remember having any dreams while you were inert, indicating a severe deficiency, but it can’t hurt to attempt contact.

‘Saber, can you hear me?’ you reach out with your mind. You wait several seconds, but receive no reply. Inability to communicate mentally suggests that you shouldn’t try using a Command Spell to summon the swordswoman. If she’s physically as far away as she feels, there’s no chance one or even two Command Spells can close the distance, and they’re far too valuable to waste.
>>
>>3830805
>Is it weird to want to preserve life when I can?
>He wasn't moved by her beautiful crying face.
Edgar doesn't have enough desire. This is very Shirou.
>>
“Very well,” Ilonasviel declares, drawing your focus back to the room. She climbs onto the bed and stands on the mattress, hands on her hips, positioned just above your feet so that she can look down on you. Her head almost touches the covering above. You might even have found her a little intimidating if her method for attaining this height weren’t so silly. “If my safety concerns you so much, then you will gladly protect it. Serve me!”

“Come again?” You hesitate to say what you really think out loud, but what the hell kind of conclusion is that? She doesn’t understand your resistance to killing her, but takes that reluctance as permission to be your boss? Her proposition is distorted in its reasoning and astonishingly naive. It begins to occur to you that perhaps this homunculus knows very little about people and their relations with one another.

“I said serve me! Obey my commands! Follow my orders and help me win!” So she hasn’t dropped out of the Holy Grail War, is that it? You don’t have a clue who her Servant might be, if she even has one at the moment. That aside, Ilonasviel is asking a lot of you right now. But given that she’s from the Einzbern family, operating under her could have a wide range of benefits, both material and magical.

>>”Okay, I can do that for now. I won’t break any promises I make to others, but outside of that I’ll listen to you.”

All Lucroy needed to do was be a girl for an alliance.
Edgar is kind of weak to attractive girls, huh?
>>
>>3830934
All Lucroy needed to do was not be a complete dickhead about it. Unfortunately for him, he couldn't manage that.

>>”Okay, I can do that for now. I won’t break any promises I make to others, but outside of that I’ll listen to you.”
Please don't turn us into clothes like Illya.
>>
>>3830962
Bit difficult to romance, clothes.
Now a geas would be something to worry about.
>>
>>3830969
That's why we shouldn't just acquiesce, we need to make it seem like we're on more equitable terms -- alliance instead of serving her.
>>
>>3830974
That is true...
>>3830813
Switching from >>3830846 to
>>”That’s a pretty overbearing way to request an alliance, you know? Just ask normally.”
>>
>>3830974
Why would a Geas matter?
Edgar never breaks his word anyway.
>>
>>3831016
A geas would let her put us in a very inconvenient situation.
Say Edgar has to keep a promise he's made already, but it violates the geas's terms: it's the end of the War, only Saver and Rider are left standing, and now Edgar is forced by the geas to break his promise to Saber.
>>
>>3831029
We aren't going to get geassed.
Einzbern aren't that kind of sneaky.
Maybe turned into a doll though.
>>
>>3831016
Have you read The Death of Cú Chulainn? He has conflicting geasa placed upon him, and his dying follows from being placed in a position where he must break one. Something similarly bad would happen to Edgar if he were given a geis.
>>
>>3831040
Einzbern are alchemists and shouldn't have the capability to geass though.
>>
>>3831029
Hell we could pull a Kiritsugu if she says we have to "listen" to her, doesn't mean we actually have to do what she says.
>>
>>3831029
Edgar would just attack Saver himself instead of ordering Saber to do it
>>
>>3831061
Yeah, but Illya also had mystic eyes, so I don't think that necessarily disqualifies them from having a geis or equivalent binding spell.
>>3831064
That's not Edgar's style, is the problem. He's not a rules-lawyer so much as one who abides by both the letter and the spirit of the law.
>>
>>3831074
Mystic Eyes are because of them being alchemists though.
They are able to give any homonculi they want the damn things.

If she has mystic eyes that can control people to that extent, we were fucked from the start.
>>
>>3830813
>”That’s a pretty overbearing way to request an alliance, you know? Just ask normally
>>
>>3831084
It's not necessarily mystic eyes that would control us. Remember the dead end where Shirou acceded to Illya? She had him under some kind of magic whereby she knew what he was thinking and could control him. I think a similar result would occur here.
>>
>>3831095

>Spoken like a true machine.
You have made a fatal error: your flawed organic brain has elected to agree with Ilonasviel von Einzbern because of its incorrect prediction that appeasing her will lead to sex.
This will lead to long-term ramifications such as the formation of mutually-exclusive obligations, formation of stress in Maternal Unit and alienation from Servant Saber.

You also seem to be forgetting Kirei's admonition that "not all bad choices will kill you," EVEN THOUGH we made a poor choice not even five updates ago, and because of it we're now separated from Saber.
>>3831243
Why? Her interest doesn't seem to stem from the fact that Edgar is absolutely pussywhipped, but from the fact that he has a really strong personal code. Unconditional submission to her is not in keeping with Edgar at all.
>>
>>3831253
It's not a complete unconditional though.
It's a sincere "I'll do what you want to an extent"

He is, in fact, surrendering himself 99%. Don't be a chimp, anon. Change your vote.
>>3830839
The is completely incorrect. We never promised Saber that we would help her win. We didn't even give Mom words of comfort, remember? (See Thread 1, Post #3684605)
>“Please win. I’m begging you.”
>Before you can speak up, she turns and starts running to the front of the church. You stand and follow, wanting to reassure or comfort her, but you freeze just before the chancel, unsure what you would say. You can’t even make the promise that you’ll emerge victorious. After all, you might not be able to keep it.
We would be TOTALLY at Ilona's mercy, BECAUSE we are so autistically hung up on keeping promises and making sure they're achievable.

Yes, but this is about not giving her the ability to do something malicious in the future. It's like Net Neutrality(TM): the ISPs don't necessarily want to throttle our Internet, and in fact say that they won't, but the option for them to do so is there. This is rather like that.

“That’s a pretty overbearing way to request an alliance, you know?” you say half-jokingly. “Just ask normally.”

“What?” Ilonasviel’s brow furrows. “What do you mean, ‘normally’? It’s already normal. When two people work together, one of them has to be in charge.”

“I don’t know where you’re getting that idea from,” you respond, “but there are plenty of people who cooperate as equals.” She hesitates, as though she hadn’t considered the idea before.

“...Well, I don’t want to do that,” the girl replies after a moment. “Do you understand the position you’re in right now? I could have you killed with a snap of my fingers!”

“Even so, I won’t subordinate myself to you.” Your defiance confounds the girl even further than before, and it shows on her face.

“Edgar Rood, you are utterly inscrutable,” the Einzbern complains. She carefully steps down from the bed and walks over to the door. Once it’s open, she pauses in the frame. “Tonight only, we’ll work together, as ‘equals’.”

“And after that?”

“We’ll see.” With that, her silver hair disappears from view. The entrance remains open behind her. “Angela! Ursula! The clothes! And give him a briefing on tonight! He will be joining us.”

In a few short seconds, Ursula returns, followed by a similar-looking but unarmed maid carrying a pile of folded clothing. The door is closed, and the clothes are deposited onto your bed.

“Dress yourself,” the second maid - Angela, you presume - instructs you with an impatient, condescending tone. Unlike her partner, it appears she can speak regularly. “You have freeloaded here long enough, and it is time you work to repay your debt.” As much as you would like to reject that, it’s true that your life was saved and you’ve been sleeping here for an unknown amount of time since.

You sit up in bed, still sore, and grab the pile of clothes. The two maids don’t seem to be going anywhere, and dressing with an audience embarrasses you, so you remain in bed and let the sheets cover your legs while you put a shirt over your torso. Impressively, the clothes are almost exactly what you wore the night you were injured. Did they buy you a new outfit? Topping the mound of garments is your trusty amulet.
>>
“Lady Ilonasviel has planned a most excellent strike on Berserker,” Angela continues. “Tonight, he and his Master will be patrolling the western district, in accordance with their pattern. Rider will engage the Servant. If you are to aid Lady Ilonasviel, then you will attack the Master.”

Rider? Didn’t Rider disappear long before Shielder died? How does Ilonasviel have her? With your top half covered, you get out of bed to put on the pants.

“Familiars can help you locate Berserker’s Master, but do not count on them for combat support. Lady Ilonasviel will be occupied with command of the Servant battle.”

You’re fully clothed now. The only difference between this outfit and your usual is that the shirt is tighter. You begin stretching to ease your aches.

“Do you have any questions about the plan?” Angela looks at you with disinterested, barely tolerant eyes. If Ilonasviel’s offer of cooperation was as spontaneous as it seemed, then Angela did a very good job of presenting on the fly. You do have a question, though.

Did you guys miss the part where Edgar says he won't subordinate himself to Ilona and she responds, "we'll work together, as 'equals'."? By asking to bring Ursula -- who is for all intents and purposes property of Ilonasviel -- we admit that we're not her equal. Borrowing Ursula is the same as saying, "you're stronger than me, we are not equals, and I give control to you." After the discussion yesterday, I still believe that we should avoid giving control to Ilona in any form at the start of our relationship.
>>3833628
>>>”Why is this shirt so tight?”
This is a good meme, and I support it. Certainly more than immediately shooting ourselves in the foot.

We don't have access to a Servant, we've been taking her favors in the form of having our life saved, and we're setting ourselves up to follow her plan; effectively taking orders from her maid, if you hadn't noticed.
After all that, you think Edgar can actually keep up a farce of being an equal partner?

It's not about pretending that she's not in a stronger position, it's about demonstrating that we're capable of standing on our own -- that we don't need her to be in control of everything.
>>
>>3834913
But you're doing that while actually letting her control everything (following her plan of attack). It's a transparent pretense.
>>
>>3834912
That's a retarded analogy and you know it. We're not friends with Ilonasviel, we are negotiating an alliance in which she explicitly says she wants to be in charge. You find a closer analogy to what this choice is in F/SN Bad Ending "Geas" (Tiger Dojo #31). Taking alms from Ilona is completely different from getting a favor from a friend.
>>3834920
There's a difference between admitting that her course of action is the correct one to take and admitting one's own weakness to such an extent as to need the other's explicit and continued support.

I made my vote under the assumption that something had happened to her. Would the Einzberns be able to make a bounded field that can keep a Servant out?

You’ve clashed with Berserker’s Master once before. You’ll be ready for her exceptional physical capabilities this time, but you would be a fool not to gain every possible advantage in anticipation of your clash. To that end, there’s another capable combatant right here in the room with you - at least, there appears to be, assuming that weapon of hers isn’t for show.

”If I can’t get support from the familiars, then can I bring Ursula?” you ask.

“Preposterous!” Angela scoffs. “Ursula serves as Milady’s personal bodyguard-”

“Mm. I go.” Ursula nods. “If Ilona says yes.” Angela turns to her companion, surprised.

“Ursula,” she begins, “you can’t possibly mean to abandon your post?”

“I fight. Kill those who want to hurt Ilona. This, no different.” There’s a clear distinction in your mind, and likely Angela’s, between attack and defense, but it appears battle is all the same to Ursula. At least, that’s what you think until she offers a more compelling argument. “Besides, if Ilona there, and I here, can’t protect Ilona.”

Angela has no rebuttal to that. There’s nothing left but for Ilonasviel render judgement.

~~~
Ultimately, Ilonasviel agreed to letting Ursula accompany you. Angela drove the three of you into town. It was a bit cramped with Ursula’s giant polearm taking up so much space in the vehicle’s interior, but since this was your idea, you didn’t complain. The maid dropped your party off in a secluded alley at the edge of downtown and, after you retrieved your Black Keys from the trunk, went to the hotel to await your return.
You and Ursula follow the architect of tonight’s plan through the streets of the western district to her ambush location. Your coalition ally creates several birds out of wire and releases each one as she finishes it, dispersing familiars in multiple directions to monitor the battlefield. After a good deal of walking, Ilonasviel leads you into an alleyway and to the back door of a small corner store. Her intended hiding place for tonight, most likely. You’re about to offer to destroy the lock for her when the silver-haired girl produces a key. How she acquired one, you’ve no idea.
“You two should go one block further west,” Ilonasviel says, constructing another eye in the sky. “The familiars are centered around there. Once they find the Master of Berserker, I’ll have this one lead you to her.” The Einzbern Master holds up the faux avian so it can hop onto Ursula’s shoulder. Ursula looks at the bird for a moment, smiling softly.
>>
With your most fragile member safely tucked away, you and Ursula head to the prescribed position. There, you find a deep alley containing a particularly convenient nook. Impressively, it can hide Ursula and the full height of her weapon from the street. You wonder for a moment if Ilonasviel found this place on her own or if Shielder happened to scout it out while he was alive. Probably the latter, you suppose, taking cover behind a dumpster.
For some time, you and Ursula wait in silence for the mesh creature to take flight. Before that happens, though, you hear a familiar roar.
“grrroooOOOOOOOoooh!”
Berserker’s groan echoes into the night. Cautiously, you peek around the dumpster and spot the mad warrior in the street, still a good distance away due to the length of the lane. He stomps irregularly on the asphalt, looking up into the night sky like a lunatic. You doubt he'll notice you if you depart. His head slowly turns, and his body with it. For a nutcase, his gaze is surprisingly steady… is he tracking something?
A tap on your shoulder causes your head to snap to Ursula. She’s crouching beside you, keeping body and weapon low. The familiar has left her shoulder and now glides silently in the opposite direction from Berserker.
>>
>>3837073
It's kind of esoteric and I don't remember it that well either, to be honest. I just remember that something about the underlying world is different, having to do with elemental spirits in Tsukihime, and the result is that some things like Arcueid's marble phantasm would be impossible in Fate, while heroic spirits are impossible in Tsukihime.
If there's anyone who properly remembers what the deal is, please feel free to explain.
>>
>>3837083
Honestly that sounds like something Nasu made up afterwards or slapped into a materials book or something.
>>
>>3837093
IIRC it was a conflict in the exposition given in the games themselves. Again though, not totally sure.
More than that, though, they just feel incompatible. The world as presented in Tsukihime just doesn't feel the same as the one presented in Fate. I'm not sure how to explain it, but even if there are a lot of things present in both, the idea of them sharing a universe puts me off.
>>
>>3837098
It's more to do with the immense edge that Tsukihime had that Fate turned down a little bit that makes the two feel different. I don't really see the two stories as incompatible myself.
It's only a matter of time till they get to share a universe through FGO.
>>
>>3837073
From what I remember the split off between Tsukihime and Fate goes back well before the time of the gods. They contradict in that in Fate humanity has the ability to oppose the Beasts to the point that in most timelines they are never an issue (barring a couple exceptions, then as of FGO there were no exceptions).
Whereas in Tsukihime Arcuid and those on her level meant humanity never reached the point where Beasts were a thing. Humanity is inherently weaker in that timeline and at the whims of a few powerful individuals.
Fate is humanity at the helm of its destiny (or at least allowed to give it a shot).
Tsukihime is humanity a subservient species with a handful of outliers that are enough to amuse those greater than us.
As far as I'm concerned, the entire series had it's soul torn out by Extra.
The rest is just constant retcons by Nasu to allow whatever the current shitty story is.
Like giving the will of humanity the ability to delete any unfavourable timeline.
>>
>>3837128
Extra feels like it was supposed to be non canon but for some reason had enough fans at the time, or sales, that they tried to make it a mainstay. Then it just overwrite the meta and Nasu was like "Well they seem to like every scrap of esoteric bullshit I cram in here."
If the familiar is in flight, then it’s time to move. Spending too much time around Berserker would be hazardous to your health, anyway. The two of you carefully creep away in tow of the bird, your steps quick but light. Ursula’s deft footwork and handling of her unwieldy cargo are something to be admired. Soon enough, your guide turns a corner, and the pair of you take off like a shot once out of sight. Berserker remains distracted and make no attempt to stop you.
Hurrying to your destination, you can’t help but notice that Berserker’s roars grow in volume despite their fading distance, resulting in a relatively constant listening experience for those in flight. Then comes the clashing. Thunderous waves of sound pursue you, but several seconds pass between each individual noise, and their source comes no closer to you. The crazed Servant continues to howl. You expected him to wreak havoc on the urban area come time for battle, but he doesn’t seem to be moving at all.
A relatively short journey that leads you to a small strip mall containing only two restaurants and a grocery on one end. Ilonasviel’s familiar hovers outside the windows, peering into the market. You and your partner stop in the parking lot, none too keen to get ambushed by someone you can’t see. Red handles fill your hands.
After a few seconds that feel like hours, the window in front of the wire avian explodes. Berserker’s Master comes hurtling from within, grabbing and crushing your cable companion with one hand. In the same bound, she tosses the deformed, lifeless familiar to the side and propels herself towards you. To dodge, you drop your weight and roll sideways, removing yourself from the path of her fist. As you do, you materialize the blades in one hand and slash at your passing opponent with the extended range. She kicks the ground to spin just out of your reach. Momentum causes her to overshoot your position, and when she puts a foot down to correct her trajectory, she jumps away from you instead. Her move is just in time to avoid the crashing impact of Ursula’s black halberd.
The ice-like eyes of Berserker’s Master remain primarily focused on you, though they shift between you and Ursula. You’ve gained a little bit of information from what just happened; Berserker’s Master is treating you as the priority target.
Our magic may not be able to affect her directly but could we use ice magic to make barriers and whatnot like when we helped Charlotte evade Archer? We won't have enough time to use that spell we used on Shielder because she is on our asses but those earlier spells were pretty quick to throw up.
>>
Your other Black Keys reveal their blades. While Ursula keeps the Master of Berserker busy, you’ll have the opportunity to attack from range. If you keep her hemmed in, you or Ursula should manage to land a hit before your ammunition is depleted. You ready a throw, but Berserker’s Master recognizes your intent, positioning Ursula between you.
The enemy having restricted herself to what is effectively a narrow corridor, Ursula’s long weapon easily keeps the unarmed girl at bay. Movement of the white hoodie is accented against the darkness on the other side of your partner, exposing a futile struggle to slip past the polearm. The fight takes place in such a narrow arc that the maid can move her weapon to intercept or repel with little more than a flick.
For you, this has its difficulties. Any attempt you make to get an angle simply causes the melee to rotate. Berserker’s Master is keen to avoid your line of sight. Whatever; you can make this work. Ascertaining her location isn’t hard, and Ursula hasn’t given an inch of ground yet. Sweeping an arm wide in front of you, a Black Key spins off toward the fight, arcing safely around your ally. But your target is fast, evading with a powerful lunge to one side. She probably saw the sword coming over Ursula’s shoulder. Regardless, your objective is complete. With five Keys still in hand, you’ve forced the Master out from cover!
Your foe doesn’t dare stop now that she knows Ursula is an ineffective shield. Instead, she makes another two hops to slip completely around the halberd’s reach and charges you. Another Key makes a beeline for the Master of Berserker. It’s not going to hit, of course, but you don’t intend it to. Your throw ends with your arms crossed in front of you. Two blades remain in each hand. Berserker’s Master dodges to the right. As soon as she makes her move, your right arm swings like a trebuchet, and the projectiles twirl out as a pair - one to strike her if she continues in her present direction, another to nail her if she tries to halt.
Blue eyes fixate on your weapons. Berserker’s Master keeps moving and holds up her arms defensively. A cutting edge bites deep into the bone of her forearm. You’re not entirely used to throwing two spinning swords at once, so you relied on your gut a little bit, but your intuition proved correct.
Your opponent’s face doesn’t change despite the pain. She turns her body around to her other problem just in time to see Ursula slashing vertically once more. The Master cartwheels out of the way, but her newly injured arm buckles and she tumbles to the ground despite avoiding the attack. Ursula tears the halberd out of the pulverized asphalt and towards the wounded foe. The tip catches a bit in the flesh of her torso, audibly ripping flesh as it picks her target up. When the halberd slows, the loser of this fight slides off smoothly and sails down the parking lot.
>>
“Iris, no!” a completely new voice shrieks in horror as Ursula’s victim rolls to a stop, bleeding terribly. Several meters further past the landing zone, another girl about your enemy’s age with long white hair, a matching dress, and emerald green eyes dashes to the fallen combatant. Soft green light emanates from the hands she places on the injuries of the crumpled fighter. Ursula hefts her weapon, preparing to charge and kill both, but freezes as a third figure fades into reality before them.
It’s a woman with hair black as the night itself. A simple, dark red dress held up by a pair of straps covers a brown kirtle underneath. Gold brooches with multiple bead-covered strings tied between them accent her golden eyes.
“What a brave double-teaming strategy!” she says in a mocking tone. “Proper heroes could learn a lot from you about how to fight young ladies.”
The Servant isn’t making any moves towards you, just standing protectively in front of the two white-haired girls. The initiative is yours… if you want it.
Both they and Caster were present during the attack on Lucroy's mansion. Plus, I'm fairly certain Caster was distracting Lancer while the Berserker pair were hunting down Lucroy. That might have been a coordinated plan on their part.
Rereading last thread I'm pretty sure this is Archer and her master, she taunts us like the woman did before we got got. It's possible Marshall has three servants and masters in his alliance.
>>
I think you're right that we don't have a confirmed gender for Archer. I vaguely recalled Charlotte referring to them as a he at some point, but looking back I don't see it. However, I did notice this from back when we went to the Lucroy mansion.
>True to Saber’s report, a tree across the clearing falls, accompanied by a familiar groan echoing throughout the premises. In the distance, a dark figure dexterously cartwheels into view past the right side of the home. Several colorful spells fly out of the treeline in pursuit. Lancer regains his footing, heels digging into the dirt as his momentum carries him along, and slashes at any projectile that strays too close. Each one vanishes after being cut by his spear.
>Berserker now charges out from the woods. Currently defending and without enough time to evade, Lancer can only block the incoming attack head-on. The axe slams into the shaft of the spear, sending the spearman careening back into the darkness of the forest. Unsurprisingly, Berserker follows. You catch a brief glimpse of another figure wearing a dark red color moving in between the trees before your attention is drawn to the house itself by a muffled explosion and a flash of turquoise light from a second-story window. Another noise and an identically-colored flare occur in an adjacent room. There’s another battle occurring inside, it seems.
I think the red thing in the woods spitting out spells was Caster, and that they are the same Servant who stands before us now.
>>
>>3840129
It is possible for an Archer to use magic based projectiles but I can't even imagine who. The projectiles we know for sure were Archer were always described as "shells". Possible explosive spells but no way to know.
This makes me wonder why Archer would have spared us and where did Saber go afterwords.If it is some self imposed exile muh honour shit I swear to god.
She's an exceptionally skilled Caster who wields AoG magics of course she was a danger. Casters need setup though, time to work their magic. Her performance, even working against his magic resistance, was lacking. If she was capable of killing us without the girls dying she would be doing it.
The introduction of a Servant banishes all thoughts of finishing Berserker’s Master - or Iris, as she appears to be named - from your mind.
“Ursula, we’re leaving,” you say, carefully backing away and refilling your hands with hilts. It might not do much good, but you’re not dumb enough to expose your back to a Servant nor face one unarmed. Ursula follows suit, weapon held at the ready.
“My, how courageous!” the woman mocks your decision to depart.
“Better cowardice than incompetence,” you retort.
“You have the guts to back talk, I'll give you that,” she laughs, shooing you away. “Run along now. I have more important matters to attend to.”
You’re not sure why she’s letting you go, but you’re not going to stick around to ask. As soon as the line of sight is broken, you and Ursula sprint back the way you came, ducking into alley after alley.
~~~
{interlude ??-1}
~~~
A massive man stands atop a roof, breeze pressing his hooded shirt against bulging muscles. It’s only about four stories up, but it’s noticeably taller than most buildings in this area, making it an excellent vantage point. Conveniently, the jutting road of a three-way intersection stretches out before the building for a few miles. This is the cleanest shot anyone could ask for on Berserker.
Unfortunately, Berserker’s Protection from Arrows nullifies that advantage. Archer would have killed Berserker days ago had his target lacked that skill. The warning from the overseer against collateral damage has also proven a nuisance, effectively banning Archer from pursuing targets in this central (and more importantly, popular among combatants) area. With a few days of preparation, however, he has managed to prepare a solution to both problems. He won’t attack Berserker with arrows, and he technically won’t be destroying much of anything. Yet, somehow, luck hasn’t been on his side lately. A complication, impossible to account for, now plagues his plan right as he intends to execute it.
Of all the Servants he’s fought, observed, and schemed against in this Holy Grail War, none have been able to fly.
Two great wings, black as a raven’s, sprout from the back of a beautiful woman. Her long, pale blue hair and armor of blue and gray shine in the moonlight as she swoops down repeatedly to the hulking madman below. In her hands is a strange winged spear, with a one-edged, hooked, harpoon-like tip. Every skewering dive she aims is deflected, but when her attack is repelled she soars back into the sky. Though Berserker may be holding her off for now, he is powerless to counterattack.
Despite the interloper, Archer has no intention of abandoning his plan. He has the opportunity to learn about this new enemy from a distance, and she may even be slain in the chaos to follow. That, perhaps, is the ideal scenario. A huge composite bow appears in the marksman’s hands. He calmly knocks an arrow, takes aim, and fires.
The roars and crashes are getting closer again. Has that guy moved at all since you left him in the first place? You’re not too keen on risking a run-in with another Servant, but you need to meet back up with Ilonasviel one way or the other. You motion to Ursula to stay back and carefully peek around the building into the alley from which you first fled.
Indeed, Berserker remains rooted to the spot. Even more bizarre than that, however, is his reason for why. You can hardly believe your eyes. Every few seconds, Berserker swings his axe to parry what appears to be no more than a streak of moonlight, resulting in a deafening collision. Each time the shooting star returns to the sky, Berserker shouts after it in frustration.
Then, just after another shining impact, Berserker twists to avoid something. You catch a glimpse of one of Archer’s arrows sailing over the mail-clad monstrosity before your view is obscured by a flash of light and a great rush of air. In an instant, your connection with Saber surges back to its full strength!
However, your overwhelming excitement from this development is short-lived, and you only have a split second to take in what follows. Several feet in the air above Berserker are Saber and Rider. Wasting no time on confusion, their weapons are already drawn to neutralize the threat below; for Saber, her sword, and for Rider, a one-handed battle axe. The mad warrior’s skin glows from within, and he lets out a horrendous howl. With blinding speed, his weapon rips through the air. His targets, unable to dodge, are sent rocketing away.
Saber rakes across the building opposite you in the alley, smashes into a dumpster, and skids across the ground for a bit before finally stopping a few feet past your hiding spot. On all fours, the swordswoman whips her head up, and her eyes lock on you. But she doesn’t express any joy, or even say hello. Your Servant is already in a frenzy.
“Orders!” she growls. The moonlight is about to make another pass at Berserker, and after that he might start moving. Until then is your window to make a decision!
Why is this a restriction? The throne of heroes exists outside of time. It shouldn't matter when you become a heroic spirit so long as you do eventually. It's also very possible to summon servants who aren't heroic spirits yet in your timeline, like EMIYA.
>>
>>3843372
>EMIYA
>heroic spirit
Big laff.
The more recent a Servant, the weaker they are due to the fact that as time went on, individual humans got weaker and mystery diminished.
Go ahead.
Bring up SERAPH and the Moon Cell summoning Armstrong
I dare you.
>>
>>3843382
What's the deal with that anyway? I know the mooncell can summon up ineligible heroes because se.ra.ph isn't the same as the throne, but wasn't there no moon landing in the extraverse timeline?
What'd he become famous for there, being the first man on Mars?
>>
>>3843528
It's because nothing about the Moon Cell makes any fucking sense.
There's that whole retconned bit with Arc showing up if you want proof that Nasu didn't think this shit through.
>>
>>3843372
EMIYA is a bad example, he only became a Servant because he contracted with the world as a Counter Guardian, not because Sword Autist ever became recognized as a hero.
>>
>>3843382
>Can summon the man that sailed across a big puddle to find a new country
>Can't summon the man that literally left Gaia in nothing but a tin can wearing a fish bowl helmet and strutted his stuff in Crimson Moon Brunestud living room
Heroic Spirits are saved on the Throne because of their effect on Human history, Armstong would be saved but he'd just be a weak Heroic Spirit since he comes from a time with low Mystery as opposed to a time when you had people suplexing dragons and demons everyday.
>>
>>3843624
>Heroic Spirits are saved on the Throne because of their effect on Human history
This is FGO's nonsense, the kind of stuff that justifies Tesla as a lightning god. Heroic Spirits are those who have risen far beyond the bounds of humanity as well as made a legend. The decline of mystery gradually made it impossible to do both at once.
Armstrong is a terrible example also because 99% of his accomplishment was the work of others at NASA. At least Columbus led his own expedition. There's a reason why the "one small step" quote is meaningful: it's an admission of the tiny role he played in the achievement.
>>
>>3843636
>Heroic Spirits are those who have risen far beyond the bounds of humanity as well as made a legend.
To be fair I'd classify leaving your own planetary body when you don't have any natural flight capabilities as going pretty far beyond humanity's boundaries.
>>
>>3843661
>beyond humanities natural boundaries
Yes, so is travelling at high-speed in a car.
What's your point?
>>
>>3843661
It isn't, though. That's the point. People like Artoria or Cu Chulainn were truly superhuman, while the achievements of modern heroes, made with technology, are purely within human capabilities. It's the human mind put to mundane work, and the achievements are made by amassing large numbers of these mundane people and having them work together. Spaceflight is the heroism equivalent of a million monkeys at typewriters making a novel. It may be a shocking event, but you wouldn't call any one of the monkeys a great writer.
There are moderns who have gone beyond human limits. Zelretch and the other Sorcerers are the prime examples. Due to the constraints of mystery, they need to keep their achievements hidden, though; so they cannot become heroic spirits. On the other hand, we have people like Armstrong, or political leaders, or sports stars, who achieve incredible fame while remaining perfectly mundane humans. These, too, cannot become heroic spirits. Do you see my point?
>>
>>3843661
>>3843668
Let me clarify what I mean by superhuman. In F/SN, it's stated that Servants are weaker than the heroic spirits they're based on were when they were alive. They have to be cut down to fit into their class containers. In other words, the original Cu could kick Lancer's teeth in, and Saber would have a hell of a time going up against the real Artoria.
Now, consider that comparison with Armstrong, or Columbus, or Drake, or Tesla, or any of these more recent heroes. What's Neil Armstrong going to do when faced with a Servant? Call up NASA and hope they can build him a machine that lets him win?
After F/SN they started introducing heroes who simply weren't superhuman. Heroes not out of legend, but out of more and more recent history. The excuses they came up with to make them Servants became more and more contrived as time went on, and at this point it's just ridiculous. Totally out of step with how Servants were depicted and explained in the original work.
>>
>>3843684
>Saber would have a hell of a time going up against the real Artoria.
Bad example to use considering the living servant thing but yeah, the class container does nerf her.
>>
“We’re going after Archer!” you declare. While Berserker defends himself, you make your move! Saber in front and Ursula behind, you hurry across the alley in time with the resounding clang. The crazed Servant doesn’t follow.
“Stay in the alleys and out of sight!” you command. “Don’t let Archer target us!” Both of your companions hear and obey, hugging walls and dumpsters as closely as speed will allow, pressing forward in the direction of Archer. When you reach the first road, your whole team simply sprints to the other side. To slow would make you easier to shoot. You can’t see any particularly tall buildings over the tops of those you pass, so you don’t have a good guess as to where exactly Archer is camped out. As usual, you’ll have to rely on Saber in order to track down the enemy.
You continue tearing through backways for one, then two, then three more blocks. Despite your charge and the continued clangor to the rear, no more missiles fly. You begin to worry. Has Archer fled? Was that first arrow his singular contribution to the night’s chaos? If that’s so, should you turn around? You might still be able to rejoin the action, but if you return and Archer is simply waiting for an opportunity, then your back will be exposed. Staying the course is the wiser option, even if you come up empty-handed.
‘Master, he’s here,’ Saber eventually alerts you, rendering your worries null and void. Once your narrow path opens up a final time, the swordswoman turns down the street. You follow, and Ursula brings up the rear. What you expected to be a brief home stretch is cut even shorter just as you round the corner. A man waits for you on top of a short dry cleaning establishment several buildings away on the opposite side of the street. His impressive muscles remain somewhat defined under his loose hoodie and sweatpants.
“Back for another round, are you? I didn’t know the first was so enjoyable,” he taunts, focused on your Servant. Saber’s hands knead the hilt of her weapon restlessly. She looks like she wants to pounce, but you suspect she’s holding back to guard you. The large man pays little mind and looks down at himself, indicating his sweatshirt. “Oh, this is rude of me, isn’t it? I suppose disguise is meaningless after our last encounter. I look better without it, anyway.”
>>
His figure is obscured by mist for a moment, and then the haze disperses, revealing Archer’s true form - which, truth be told, isn’t any different in physique, but his clothing is radically altered. He wears a bronze muscle cuirass with an armored skirt and greaves of the same material above his sandals. It’s the classic look of an ancient Greek soldier. Tan skin now covers his still-titanic build, with curly golden hair and beard to crown his head. In one huge, sinewy arm is a wooden composite bow; in the other, a bronze arrow.
“What do you think?” Archer says playfully, slowly turning to show himself off. “Quite a looker, am I not?”
He completely exposes his back to you, but Saber doesn’t budge. When Archer finishes his rotation, he frowns quietly. The Servants glare at each other, neither wanting to make the first move.
“Edgar,” the soft breath of a whisper tickles your ear. Ursula has come up beside you and now leans over your shoulder. She’s cupping her hand to direct her whisper and probably to prevent Archer from reading her lips. “Everyone, bait. You, ice. Saber, kill.”
The fight will break out soon regardless of what you do. Better to have a plan than let this play itself out.
>>Ursula is onto something. Trick Archer into getting close, pen him in with ice, and let Saber handle the rest. Archer only needs to be slowed momentarily.
Ursula has a point. So long as Archer can continually retreat, Saber will have difficulty ending him in a timely manner. If you could stop him with ice long enough for Saber to get close, she would have a much better chance. The question is how to catch Archer with your magecraft. You’re not indoors like when you tripped Shielder up, so you’ll need to lure him close to you. But how are you going to pull that off when he’s so much better off at a distance?
You spend several seconds racking your brain for an answer. Nobody moves. In the silence of the staring contest, an idea strikes you. It’s risky. It’s plain stupid. In fact, it’s so ludicrously moronic that no half-competent Master would try it. But that’s why no one would see it coming.
‘Saber, I have a plan,’ you reach out to your Servant mentally. Ursula will accompany you of her own accord, but Saber in her present state needs to be instructed. ‘We’re about to pull back the way we came. When I start running, I want you to follow.’
‘...Yes, Master.’ The response is hesitant, but obedient. She must really want to kill Archer if she doesn’t immediately accept your instructions.
No sooner have you received confirmation from your Servant than you turn and rip back through the alley from whence you came. Ursula and Saber are right on your heels. If you want your spell to be ready in time, you need to start casting now. The dam bursts. Magical energy surges into your circuits.
“Deliver me, O Lord, from the evil man.”
Dingy gray walls pass you by on both sides, broken only by the occasional door or trash bin. This retraced path is ideal for the maneuver you intend to pull off. Up ahead is a staggered intersection. This alley stops as it connects with another. But go right, and a short distance away is a left turn to another backway. That junction will be the key. A loud metallic reverberation rings out from behind you, and a deflected bronze arrow soars overhead.
“Keep me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked.”
Archer can surely see the layout of the buildings from up high. He knows what routes you can take, and what vantage points are best suited to sniping at each. Another clash echoes to the rear, sending one more projectile careening into the starless night. You bank right at the first convergence, narrowly skirting a few trash bags.
>>
“The proud have hid a snare for me.”
What’s more, when Archer can’t see you, he has another way to trace of your movement. His ability to sense Saber will tell him everything he needs to know about when and where you turn. It’s like you have a GPS microchip inside you. The second you commit to the left turn, Archer will move to the establishment currently on your right for an ideal line of fire.
“Thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.”
But what if you were to rip the implant out?
‘Take the lead, Saber! To the left!’ you command telepathically. Unlike before, the swordswoman obeys immediately, moving ahead of you and Ursula at the same pace as before. But the two of you stop at the mouth of the alleyway. You press your hands against the wall of Archer’s next position with only Ursula to protect you. A Master, in the face of an enemy Servant, sending away his own. It’s pure lunacy. Who would anticipate this?
You hear Archer land near the edge of the property above. Ursula’s hand covers your mouth to stifle what little noise you will make. You whisper the last line of the incantation.
“Circle Nine.”
Ice rapidly snakes forth from your hands and up the side of the structure. Archer certainly sees that Saber is the only one in the alley, and realizes something is wrong. You can’t have gone far. He takes a step forward to peer over the edge. The front of his foot curled blond hair appear over the side just as your ice reaches the roof. It swiftly balloons out, snags his leg, and forms a hollow sphere multiple inches thick around him.
‘Saber, attack now!’
It will take no time at all for a Servant to break out of your frozen bubble. But Saber, previously moving at human pace, is more than close enough to turn back around and lunge full speed at the trapped prey! Archer’s refracted image is difficult to perceive. You can see it shift, then distort even further, accompanied by a muffled sound within. A flash, and it disappears. Saber crashes through the ice.
No more than a moment later, your Servant drops down beside you from the hole, a single bronze arrow in hand. Suddenly, she shrieks in fury, crushing the shaft in her grip, hurling what remains to the ground, and stomping it repeatedly. Archer has vanished into thin air. You sigh in exasperation. Shielder was one thing, given that he was built like a tank, but Archer's escape is even more ridiculous than your plan to beat him!
After crushing the missile to satisfaction, Saber calms down. Silently, she and Ursula look to you for orders.
Son of a bitch. I'm guessing he has the ability to, through his bow, make others be far away kind of like himself or his wife's potential suitors. That's why Saber felt far away.
Well we have Berzerker out here in the open. His master is injured and we have multiple servants, the winged chick(whether she's a servant or what ever) along with our self and Ursula (and Illonahole I guess) we should be able to wear him down and best case scenario our other enemies will be reduced as well. Going to have to be careful Saber and our self aren't being used to get rid of Berzerker though.
I'd like for us to at least secure more information on Berserker before we leave. Even if he doesn't fall tonight, if we learn more about his abilities then we can ensure our next encounter is our last. We need to be careful if he really does have some sort of ability that buffs him when facing multiple opponents.
Despite your frustration, the night has yet to end. Faint sounds of the battle you’ve left behind are audible in the distance. Archer is nowhere to be found, remaining here on the off-chance he might return would be wasteful. You might still be able to score a kill tonight. Wordlessly, you hasten back to Berserker, flanked by your allies.
The closer you get, the clearer it becomes that the situation has changed. Clashing noises are too distant, and the soaring starlight is no longer visible as you approach. Upon your arrival, you find that the street and surrounding buildings have been torn to shreds. Just about all storefronts have received some form of damage. Some were lucky and only lost windows or signs; others have collapsed entirely. Gashes mark the road all the way up to an intersection and around the bend. You glance back to Saber. Her gaze is pointed in the general direction that the destruction leads.
Tracing the path of devastation, the battle soon returns to your view around the first corner. Mostly, anyway. Brief flashes of Berserker’s axe deflecting his persistent attacker appear over the rooftops to the left at the next intersection. Rider zips across the junction ahead; at this distance and speed, you can’t make out much save that her mount is a horse. Additionally, the moonlight no longer flies uninhibited. Its attack pattern remains largely unchanged, but every so often, it swerves in an evasive maneuver as a chunk of debris is hurled past.
Suddenly, one of Ilonasviel’s familiars glides out of the darkness and over to you. Saber nearly cuts it in half, but holds back her blade just before her slash begins. Ursula watches the avian intently. The bird circles in front of you twice, then falls to the ground, motionless. That’s odd. And ominous.
Given the circumstances, perhaps it’s best to split up. But sticking together may also be prudent.
Berserker's holding off two Servants; that plus the glowing thing plus the earlier interpretation of Kirei's warning tells me that we shouldn't send our unfortunate Saber into the mix. “Saber, Ursula, stay with me. We’re going to make sure Ilonasviel is okay.” Ursula nods in assent, and follows as you take off. Saber lingers for a few moments, focused on the conflict at hand, but ultimately turns away to obey you. It’s not far to Ilonasviel’s hiding place; only a block or so to the east. The markings of Berserker’s rampage abruptly cease as you pass the starting place of the battle.
Rather than risk making yourselves visible through the store’s large windows, the three of you sneak around the side to reach the dim alley you originally left Ilonasviel in. You’ve received no warning about an enemy Servant from Saber, but that doesn’t mean nobody is inside. You assume your standard breaching position beside the door. Slowly, quietly, you twist the knob. It’s unlocked. Ursula presses herself against the wall on the other side of the entrance. Saber prepares to take point, blade drawn.
A quick, powerful push with your palm swings the portal wide open. Your Servant lunges through. Ursula’s weapon isn’t well-suited to such close quarters, so you go in second. Black Keys already in hand, you whip around the doorframe and dash inside. Saber has stopped moving, glaring hatefully at something. You turn your head to look and-
The alley intersection is dark and smelly. Black clothes blend in quite well with the shadow, as does the ebon lance loosely gripped in the man’s right hand. Only the faint glint of the crushed bronze arrow clashes with the night. Odor hardly makes this a pleasant location to keep watch in. He’s amazed that his Master is willing to stomach it. That said, with how dangerous it is to stray from her Servant at the moment, his cynical mind doubts that she’s displaying strength of character.
There’s a pretty big battle going on right now. Chaotic as it is, he could probably clean house under better circumstances. No free lunch, though. Getting out from under Lucroy’s thumb came at the cost of the preparations they’d made together, and he’d been sent back to square one. Slowly but surely, though, he and his new boss are recovering lost ground, and soon enough he will be able to fight unencumbered. ‘Til then, it’s back to the old grind.
And that’s why he’s here right now. This is going to be an easy kill. Most Servants only have so many tricks up their sleeve, and Lancer figured out Archer’s big one. Saber’s kid seems pretty smart, what with the ballsy move he pulled to corner his enemy. But surprisingly, he hadn’t managed to solve the puzzle. After everything the kid had seen, why didn’t he realize that the arrow is both the entrance and the exit?
A brilliant burst shines from the arrowhead. The presence of a Servant suddenly appears. Lancer already knows it’s his target, and his weapon thrusts forward into the light. He feels it pierce easily through flesh. The glow fades, and the spearman can see that the deed is done. His weapon is buried in the sniper’s vulnerable throat. Archer, shocked, stares wide-eyed into the merciless violet. As Lancer thought, Archer was incapable of seeing outside.
...What the hell?
This isn’t where you just were. You quickly take in your surroundings. The first thing you notice is Ursula. Her face remains expressionless, though she must be in incredible pain. She’s lying flat on the sidewalk, black halberd laying off to the side. You’re in the middle of tying a torn strip of your gray shirt around a cut on her left forearm. Her right upper arm is already bandaged in the same manner. The blood is messy; soaked into both bandages, on your hands, and even on Ilonasviel, who sits on the other side of Ursula. Her hands hover over the deep, horizontal gash across Ursula’s upper chest. You can see the green light of healing magic fade from Ilonasviel’s palms, as though she just forgot what she was doing. She looks down, mortified, at Ursula’s condition. She herself can’t see it, but the skin of Ilonasviel’s neck has been broken. It’s not deep - it’s clearly superficial - but it’s lacerated nonetheless, like a blade had been pressed against it.
Your head jerks to the right. It’s the corner store you left Ilonasviel in. One of the windows behind you has been shattered, glass coating the concrete a few meters to your rear. To the left, you find Saber standing off to the side next to a woman you’ve never seen before. She’s drop-dead gorgeous, with incredibly long, pale blue hair and amethyst eyes, clad in armor colored silver and blue. A Servant, no doubt. You also realize that your left arm has its own bloody scrap of your shirt bound just below the elbow.
And one more crucial detail: everyone looks as baffled as you feel.
Despite how bizarre the situation is, you quickly get a grip and continue tying. Whatever’s going on, it seems like you’re safe for now. Ursula is in a bad way. Her treatment has to come first.
“What’s going on?” Ilonasviel asks, scared and confused.
“Heal,” you order. You nod pointedly to indicate the gash on Ursula. “I can’t fix that. Maybe you can.” Ilonasviel looks at you blankly for a moment before her face steels. Without another word, she begins the healing process.
Despite your injured arm, you manage to finish binding Ursula’s wound. You begin checking for more injuries, but it doesn’t look like you’ll find any. Maybe now you can afford to talk.
That's a funny way of spelling「KING CRIMSON」...
So here's what I'm thinking: Edgar doesn't have the physical or magical capabilities to care for Ursula, and hovering over Ilona will only make things more stressful for the both of us.
Saber and this other Servant are standing off to the side, which means they aren't hostile to each other; ergo we can determine identities at a later time. What I think is most important is that we need to piece together what happened. So far, we have:
- There was no Servant energy in the building
- Saber glared hatefully at something
- Ilona had a blade held to her throat
- Someone (presumably Ursula) got yeeted out the window
Maybe the pretty blue lady can explain what's going on.
>>
>>3851059
>We disappointed Lancer, lads. I'm sad now.
I'm not sure we could have solved the puzzle without a few more clues. All's we had to work with was that Archer disappeared while inside the ice, and the only thing left inside was the arrow Saber took. But she threw a tantrum and stomped all over the arrow, so I just assed it was left a pile of splinters on the ground and wasn't relevant any more.
>>
>>3851075
That's not all, though. He shot the arrow and materialized not one but two Servants at once. I thought that was weird at first, but with hindsight it's pretty clear that his NP is like a Trojan Horse Arrow, but with the ability to suck things in, too. We should've figured it out from the post where he released Saber + the one where he disappeared
>>
“I don’t know if I can do this here,” Ilonasviel says. “We need to get her back to the mansion.”
“Can someone contact Angela at the hotel and get the car? Ursula shouldn’t be moving if we can avoid it,” you effectively order the others. As great as information would be, Ursula takes priority. You continue to examine the maid, lightly turning body parts to scan for any more trauma. Work is interrupted by a deep sound to the left, drawing your attention. Bursts of air rhythmically brush against you as the newcomer, who has now sprouted a pair of beating wings as dark as your hair, rises into the sky. Then, she’s off like a shot - so the moonlight earlier was her? - and she dematerializes.
You return to the search. Thankfully, you fail to find anything. Nothing is visible on the surface, and the patient never reports pain whenever you press lightly to locate internal injuries. Eventually, you come to Ursula’s right arm. Taking care to avoid disturbing Ilonasviel’s magecraft, you work your way down the limb. When you reach the wrist, Ursula retracts her appendage a few inches. You freeze. Did you discover something? Where’s the injury? Her hand rises, and her fingers curl around your low-hanging palm. So that’s what it is. Your ally might struggle to express herself, but she must be in agony right now. With a wound that deep, she may be terrified, too. You clasp her hand firmly in both of yours. After a moment, you’re surprised by Saber, who moves to the other side of Ursula, kneels, and replicates your gesture.
For a while, the four of you remain just so, and you lose track of time. Eventually, though, you make out the hum of a car’s engine, and shortly thereafter a black, high-capacity, high-end SUV comes barreling around a corner, led by the flying, winged woman. The car screeches to a halt on the road right in front of Ursula. Angela hastily exits the driver’s seat and opens the trunk. Saber leaps to the other side of you, hefts the halberd, and shoves it into the automobile through the back. After lingering for a brief moment, Ilonasviel stops healing and pulls away so Ursula can be moved. The girl is tired, and Ursula’s wound still isn’t closed. This might be worse than you thought.
When you carefully pick up the injured maid, her deadpan visage watches you blankly. Oozing blood prevents you from gauging the remaining depth of her wound. You don’t know whether to consider that a blessing or a curse. Deftly, you ascend the step into the vehicle and slide your sister-in-arms across the middle row of the eight-seated transport, taking care not to strike your head against the polearm’s shaft. Ilonasviel climbs in behind you, and you exit the opposite side of the car so she can easily reach the patient’s torso.
“Are you coming?” Ilonasviel asks, casting you an exhausted and worried look.
>>Return to school grounds tonight. Ursula will be taken care of. You don’t know how long you’ve been absent, but it’s been long enough.
>>
“Yes,” you reply simply. You can’t bring yourself to leave while Ursula is in this state.
“You may take the front passenger seat,” Angela instructs, sliding through the gap between you and the car so she can climb in. “Milady, I will take over from here.”
“No,” Ilonasviel replies, clearly tired, “when Ursula is like this, I-”
“You must not overwork yourself, Milady,” Angela cuts off her employer. You open the passenger-side door and clamber in. “The brunt of the effort is now mine to bear. You may watch, but you must rest.”
Saber shuts the trunk. Seeing that little room remains in the vehicle, your Servant vanishes to spend the ride in spirit form. Passenger doors of the row behind you close as well. The unfamiliar woman, the only remaining candidate for driver, opens the driver-side door and takes the wheel. Your transport accelerates, and you’re off.
The ride is fast and smooth. Acceleration and deceleration occur in just the right quantities to enable turning without causing Ursula to shift. You turn to get another look at the operation, but it’s impossible to see. Angela is hunched over directly behind your seat, which puts her and her uniform right in between you and the healing. On the other side, Ilonasviel kneels and leans against the seat, spent but still watching intently.
“You are kind to worry,” the driver suddenly addresses you. Her voice is soft and soothing. “But at this time, there is nothing you can do. Your concern alone is enough.”
You face forward again and resign yourself to waiting. The car passes through the southern neighborhood, reaches the highway, and drives east to the Einzbern manor.
“Unbelievable! Lancer, how could you allow the survival of an enemy to whom you dealt a fatal blow?”
“Look, where I come from, people die when you stab ‘em in the throat. I thought it would take care of itself.”
“And your failure to finish Archer off let him teleport away! What do you have to say about that!?”
“Hm… well, that move cost at least two Command Spells; one to teleport Archer, and another to heal him. That’s gotta count for somethin’, yeah?”
“We COULD be counting one less Servant among our enemies!”
“Hey, this can still work out. He’s bound to clash with Saber’s kid and the Einzbern again. The more enemies for the Einzbern, the better, and the better chance Saber’s kid comes to us for help. And with one Command Spell left, Archer's Master can't pull any more funny business. Good scenario, ain’t it?”
“...You are on thin ice, Lancer. I'll forgive your mistake this time, but don’t disappoint me again.”
“Relax. I won't.”
You toss the ruined shirt atop the pile of your clothes on a chair. It’s the same room you had been sleeping in before. Fancy patterns on tan wallpaper are framed by white moldings connecting the wall and ceiling, as well as identically colored baseboards and dado rising from the floor.
Once the car ride ended, the extent of your involvement with Ursula’s treatment was to carry her to her bed so Angela could continue applying healing magecraft. You allowed yourself to return to this room only after you confirmed that Ursula was in stable condition. Ilonasviel didn't leave even then. Angela saw fit to give your arm a little bit of fixing as well before you turned in for the night. Both you and Ursula are due to receive more complete therapy in the morning.
You slip under the bed’s sterile white covers. It shares its hue and golden trimmings with the canopy. While the shade of both is the same as the dado, the wall lacks any ornamentation. It’s been a long night, and you still don’t have a clue how it ended. While you’re this tired, though, you won’t get very far if you ponder the issue. You close your eyes and let sleep take you.
~~~

You’re Elsewhere again. The scenery is familiar to you by now; conifers and thick mist, with an undeniable presence… out there.

“Tonight, I offer you a trade,” the forest whispers.

“What sort of trade?” you ask.

“Give me a truth,” the breeze demands, “and I will give you one in turn.”

“Before I agree, tell me what you want to know.” After last time, you’re rather wary of what the wind will ask of you.

“When you deal with the girls in your life, what do you wish you could improve upon?”

That’s… not too bad a question, honestly.

Something you could do better when dealing with girls, huh. You take a moment to think about it. Frankly, you’re probably deficient in a few areas, but if you had to pick one...

“I wish I were more sensitive to their feelings,” you say. “Sometimes I feel like I’m so caught up in my own system of rules that I neglect the emotional part of the interaction.”

It’s happened many times. You agreed to become a Master because you failed to turn down Saber’s request, not because she spurred you to action. You’ve rejected a number of kind, attractive girls just because you thought how you met them was twisted. They were blameless in that regard - how could they have known Damien was acting against your will? - but that didn't stop you from shutting them out. Ilonasviel earnestly begged you for her life with tears in her eyes. Even that didn’t move you. Sparing her was a direct result of her inability to do you further harm. It was an act of mercy, yet it feels so cruel. All of it is just so damn mechanical.

“A good answer,” the trees whisper, satisfied. “I must fulfill the bargain. I now see that a past claim of mine was wrong.”

“And what claim is that?” you ask.

“We are of the same kind after all,” the wind replies.

~~~
After taking a shower in the bathroom adjoined to your lodging, you find that your damaged clothes have been replaced once again with new ones. The shirt is the same size as it was last night. You’re still not sure if this is an honest mistake or if it’s intentional. A knock on the door is followed shortly by its opening, and Angela enters the guest room.
“I see you are awake,” Angela says coldly. “Take a seat. I will finish healing your wound.”
You obey, sitting down in the nearest chair while Angela works to complete your treatment.
“Will you be joining us for breakfast this morning?” Her tone is polite, but filled with a freezing venom underneath. Angela’s distaste for you seems to have magnified since your briefing yesterday. She remains composed, as a maid should, but it would be a mistake to confuse her professionalism and tolerance with genuine hospitality.
But then i remember our first interactions with Lancer and she definitely would have brought it up in private considering how serious we are treating the case.
>>
“No,” you reply. With Ursula now safe, you should return. People are probably worried about you. “I’d like to get back home as soon as possible.”
“I see,” Angela says, stepping away from you, healing complete. “Of course, you will require transportation. I will inform Lady Ilonasviel and prepare the car. Please wait for me out front.”
The maid leaves your room. Before you follow, you scribble your phone number down on a notepad and tear off the top sheet. You can’t help but be reminded of a hotel room by the availability of a writing utensil and notes, though they bear no brand logos. You’ll give the number to Angela after the ride in case Ilonasviel needs to call you. Now ready to establish communication, you step into the hallway. It’s tall, wide, and lined with windows rather than doors on the other wall, clearly designed to impress. The color scheme out here is identical to your room. However, the moldings on the walls are carved with intricate, artistic patterns.
You come to a magnificent foyer and immediately turn your back to it as you make for the front door. Behind you, you remember, is a vast white room with tile flooring. Two symmetrical, curved staircases with ornately designed, wooden railings lead to a landing a floor above. The space under the structure’s arch is a hallway that leads to other parts of the first floor, as do the two corridors leading off to either side from the entrance hall.
“Edgar! Wait!” The lady of the house calls to you. Your hand freezes midway to the handle that will take you outside. She runs up to you, but not very quickly due to her small frame and visibly sleepy gait. You guess she didn’t get much shut-eye last night. Her countenance displays a sad confusion. “Are you leaving already?”
“Yes. I have a life at home, so I can’t stay here forever.”
“Is that so…” She replies, downcast. Ilonasviel appears to be more fond of your presence than Angela.
“Here’s my number,” you say, handing her the folded piece of paper. If the intended recipient is right here anyway, there’s no reason to use Angela as a messenger. “If you need me, just call.”
“Okay.” Ilonasviel’s mood doesn’t do anything close to a 180, but it does improve just a little bit.
~~~

At long last, you’re back at the academy. Saber is nowhere to be seen, and daylight beats down on the campus. The residence halls surrounding you are nearly empty at the moment, suggesting that classes are in session. You doubt your wounds kept you unconscious for four or five whole days, which would mean you weren’t gone for too long after all.
>>
Given that Mom is managing the Church’s information network for this Holy Grail War, she might already know what happened to you; if so, a cover story has long since been concocted and fed to the general population. The gate guard didn’t seem too surprised to see you, at least. But it’s also possible that your mother hasn’t. Either way, Damien is sure to interrogate you for dropping all contact with him for the past… however long it’s been.

Since the academic buildings all stand at the top of the hill, your reappearance has yet to cause the stir that will inevitably follow it. Vanishing for days on end is strange, even for you. While you would usually return to classes posthaste, recent events may be excuse enough to play truant. Just for today.

You should go see your mother. She’s no doubt been worried sick over the last few days, even if she has been privy to your whereabouts. She would never sleep comfortably knowing you’re in the hands of magi, let alone a family as well-known as the Einzberns. You make your way up the hill, but make sure to sneak around behind some buildings. Hopefully you won’t get spotted too easily by other students. You’d like to avoid anyone disrupting a class if possible.

The church is easy enough to reach without incident. However, the instant you push in the front door, you’re hit with the full weight of your mother, hugging you tightly. You return it almost reflexively. She’s clearly been very, very worried about you. But to meet you as soon as you step foot inside… did she know you were coming?

“Oh, Edgar! Thank God you’re okay!” She pulls back a bit, but holds your shoulders firmly, looking you over. “Those cheap excuses for people didn’t do anything to you, did they?!”

“No, Mom, I’m fine. They didn’t hurt me. I promise.”

“You’re sure they didn’t use mind-altering spells you wouldn’t be aware of?” your mother questions you, unconvinced.

“I doubt it. If they were using some form of mind control, we wouldn’t have had the arguments we did,” you reassure her. She scrutinizes you for a moment longer perhaps unconvinced, then lets you go, allowing you to enter the church properly. The two of you walk past the pews while your conversation continues. “Speaking of the Einzberns, why did you let Ilonasviel go, anyway?”

“She said, ‘I never asked for protection, you just forced it on me!’ and, since that was true, I couldn’t really compel her to stay,” Mom explains. Her voice shifts into an all-too-familiar hateful tone. “But If I had known she was going to kidnap you, she never would have left.”

“I’m glad you didn’t. She saved my life.”

You two sit down at the front pew, and you relay recent events to your mother. The wound Archer’s Master dealt you, waking up in the Einzbern manor, and all the chaos of last night.

“Hmm…” Your mother thinks on what she’s just heard for a moment, but, again, she doesn’t seem very surprised by any of it. “I think Archer’s Master would probably have found a way to heal you even if the Einzbern didn’t show up. Based on everything you’ve just told me, it seems like Archer wanted to use Saber as a weapon, and without you feeding her energy, she would vanish.”

Really? You think Archer’s Master looked pretty intent on killing you. Maybe Archer would have stopped her one way or the other once he had gotten what he wanted out of Saber? You would continue running through possibilities in your head, but your growling stomach has other ideas.
>>
“Oh, right, I haven’t eaten today,” you say.

“Why didn’t you say so?” your mom chides. “I’ll go get something. Stay put.” She stands up and hurries over to the sacristy. Before she enters, she stops and turns to you suddenly. “Oh, right, you don’t know what day it is! It’s Friday.”

[Friday, Day 11 - Overseer’s Church]

With that, your mother vanishes through the door. Is she… storing food in there? You’re pretty sure she’s not supposed to do that, but as the overseer, maybe she gets some leeway in a few areas. She’s effectively living in the church right now, after all. You consider what to bring up for conversation upon her return.

Can we work on creating a list of priorities that we can use to guide decision-making? There's a lot going on and it seems like every time something new comes up we chase after that (which is why it took us so long to fight Archer). Your dreams have been odd recently. Masters typically do have unusual dreams, but those are visions of the Servant’s past due to the strong mental connection a Master and Servant share. Dreams where a mysterious presence in the woods interrogates you about your personal desires are a more unique phenomenon. It might be wise to get your mother’s opinion on them.

You don’t speak of the devil, but she appears regardless. The sacristy reopens after just a few seconds, and Mom emerges carrying, surprise, a half-empty box of donuts.

“They’re leftover from earlier, but you won’t complain,” she says, setting the box down between the two of you. She picks up a sprinkle-covered pastry, and you reach for a chocolate glazed. It occurs to you how similar this scene is to when you visited your mother about a week ago. You voraciously tear through half of the circle in just two bites before you raise the topic of conversation.

“I’ve been having pretty weird dreams lately,” you say to your mom, then chomping down on the third quarter of your food.

“Something other than typical Master-Servant dreams, I presume?” the overseer inquires, moving for another mouthful of her own.

“Mm-hm,” you reply after swallowing. “I’m in this misty evergreen forest, and something else is there. I’m not sure what it is, but it talks to me.”

Your mother’s mouth freezes halfway through her bite, staring at you with alarm.

“Does it ask you questions?” she interrogates you.

“Yeah, it asks me about my preferences and how I feel-”

The sprinkled donut drops back into the box. The Executor’s arms shoot across the gap to grab you by the shoulders, twisting and holding you in place so that her glare can bore directly into your eyes.

“Edgar, you have to stop talking to it,” she commands you. “I don’t care what it asks or what it offers, but you absolutely cannot continue speaking with the voice. Do you understand me?”

“Wait, what’s-”

“Do. You. Understand. Me?”

“How do you even know it’s a problem?”

Mom releases you, pulls back, and lapses into silence for a moment, averting her eyes.

“...Your father used to have similar dreams.”
>>
Your father. He passed away before you were old enough to remember much about him. Mom has shown you pictures and told you plenty, of course. His personality, how they met, stories from their time together, the few memories he was able to make with you. But there’s also a lot she’s kept under wraps. She’s never mentioned where he came from or what he did for a living, and you’ve never met anyone from the paternal side of the family. Whenever you asked a question your mother didn’t want to answer, she would deflect. That, or she would promise, ”I’ll tell you someday, honey.”

Naturally, this revelation piques your curiosity; a short-lived feeling in the face of what follows.

“That shitty voice is part of why we lost him,” Mom continues, voice beginning to crack with sadness. Her gaze returns to you, verdant lenses distorted by tears of sorrow and rage. “No goddamn way am I gonna lose you, too!”

Okay team, I've noodled on the priority list and here's how I think we should act in the future based on past choices. Then a priority list also follows.
1. Tell the truth.
2. Keep your promises.
2.1 When choosing between two or more promises to keep, the longest-standing promise takes precedence (even if that promise has been amended).
3. Don't kill wantonly, but exterminate with extreme prejudice during combat.
4. ???

Priorities:
1. The Predator
2. Other Servants
3. Spooky Ghost tree dream
4. Girls (which girls we can fight over later)
5. Canister
As other problems pop up we can insert them into the list.

I trust her to recommend what's best for us here, especially given how visceral her reaction was. Move to a different line of questioning. We'll ask her about the Tree when there's less pressing stuff to do.
>>

>We'll ask her about the Tree when there's less pressing stuff to do.
That's nice and all but we're not realistically going to avoid speaking with the forest, from a narrative or OOC perspective, so it would probably be better to choose the option that doesn't makes us a liar or dead. That option would be to go full retard, hurting our mother's feelings from insisting.

Dropping it might have been fine if we were just asking about Dad, but this thing is literally in our heads and if it's such a big threat then we deserve to know what the hell it is.
>>
Now that I think about it

>Doesn't kill opponents i they aren't fighting

Despite the powerful emotions this subject has stirred within your mother, you need more than that before you’re willing to stop communicating with the voice. If it’s a threat, you want to know its nature. Otherwise, how can you be sure that just shutting up will be sufficient protection?

“So what is it, exactly?” you ask.

“This wouldn’t have happened if Brigante weren’t such a pissant,” she spits in disgust.

“That’s not an answer.”

The overseer remains quiet. She won’t look at you.

“Mom, I know this is hard, but please.”

Tears roll down her cheeks.

“Just tell me-”

“I can’t!” You’re cut off by screaming, both your mother’s hands clenching her head in frustration. “I want to - you have no idea how much I want to - but I can’t! There’s so much I can’t do, so many dangers I can’t protect you from! I HATE this, Edgar! I hate this whole fucking war!”

You’re speechless. You did push for answers, but you didn’t think she would explode like this. Several seconds pass in silence.

“...sick of this passive bullshit,” the Executor mutters, rising. She turns to you, eyes still watering. “Edgar, you’re just like your father in the worst possible ways.” With words that stab your heart, your mother storms out of the church. Your head drops. After a few moments of paralysis, you reach for another donut and take a bite, face still downcast. It doesn’t taste very good.

Suddenly, you feel a hand rubbing your back. Looking sideways, you see that Saber has appeared, sitting on the pew beside you. She wears a bizarre white coat with a clearly Japanese motif over a layer of red and a base of black. Her upper garments are held together by a patterned dark brown sash, while baggy blue pants cover her legs. Scarlet empathy fills her gaze. It occurs to you that this is the first time you’ve ever seen your Servant without her armor. Unfortunately, you’re not in much of a mood to appreciate how pretty she is at the moment. Your eyes returns to the floor.

“That’s the first time she’s used Dad to reproach me,” you confide in your Servant.

“...Perhaps that was not a rebuke, but rather her answer?”

More silence. Maybe a few dozen seconds, maybe a few minutes. Eventually, the school bell tolls, signalling the end of classes. Well, can’t sit here forever…

The part where it's the only thing that actually gives Edgar an answer when he actually asks a question. Near enough everyone; Saber, Mom, Charlotte, etc have deflected our questions when we ask for answers. Barring Kirei in the joke Dead Ends it's the only thing that at least answers us, even if it is just in riddles.

I think we're reading different Quests, dude. It has given us almost nothing; that is, we've played 20 Questions with it and it has said, "We are of the same kind after all." That gives us no substantive information. Other than that clarifies what it's asking, but it's played word games with us except for the above; those word games do not, in my mind, constitute "answers" to anything.
1. cHARLOTte, for all her flaws, gave us the information we asked for with regards to Masters, Servants, etc. Only the scene in the basement sticks out in my mind as her being dodgy, other than that she's been pretty open.
2. We haven't actually asked Saber anything IIRC, except to invoke her full power when she was still uncomfortable with us.
3. Mom: didn't tell us what was in the canister, but respected our autonomy on that front (which implies that for her to tell us to do this like she's telling a young kid, the forest must be REALLY bad). Other than that, we've never asked her for information -- only for healing and gone in to have Saber sexually harassed.

I'm a little surprised that since Saber's declaration she hasn't tried to overtly get closer to Edgar. I suppose we can put it down to her traditional japanese upbringing and there being little time but she hasn't even tried to be present around us for anything to happen.
