The Lighthouse War is over, but conflict still continues.

With Erusea's defeat at the hands of the Osean Federation and the International United Nations, the imperial nation has splintered into a confusing mess of separatists, freedom fighters, warlords, rogue military factions, and those seeking to profit from the chaos. Worse, Erusea's many automated drone factories still remain intact, waiting for new masters to come to claim them.

The Usean continent remains in crisis, and it's up to a new generation of pilots to face this next generation threat...

You are MILLY, the "Red Tail", a Belkan Air Force pilot fighting for the IUN!

You wake up, both your vision and mind blurry as you try to regain your senses. What happened? Where the heck were you?

As your vision clears, you then find yourself in a darkened hospital room. The stark white walls and tile a dead giveaway of the sterile medical environment. The lights were off and all the shades in the window were pulled down, engulfing you in a sort of twilight gloom. It was impossible to tell if it was day or night outside. Then again, did it matter?

Your first instinct is to try and get up, but you can't. It felt like there was an invisible weight planted on your chest, preventing you from moving.

You instinctively flail your arms around, which you can apparently move without issue, when your hand brushes against what looks to be a remote control. Grasping it in your hands, it's then you notice the flatscreen television mounted on the wall in front of you. No doubt there to ease patient boredom.

Without really thinking about it, you hit the power button, and the television winks on, presenting you an image of-

You see a city burning in the night, plumes of smoke as high and thick as skyscrapers choking out the sky, turning it into a muddled mess of red and gray.

Flames roar through the cityscape like a tsunami, engulfing buildings, streets, and people. You can see the tiny silhouettes of people against the flames as they tried desperately escape the inferno. Cars choked the streets, abandoned in haste when the roads were blocked. It was a horrible sight.

At first, you had wondered what started the fire, but your curiosity was quickly answered when the camera pans up to the sky. Up above, in the murky smoke, you could see a fleet of bombers. B-52s, you think. Dozens, maybe even a hundred, dropping bombs indiscriminately. Explosions ripple through the city center like blossoming flowers, sundering and shattering buildings and sending flaming debris flying in all directions.

W-wait a minute, it was all coming back to you now. Hoffnung! That was it! That was your hometown! Where you were born! Where-

Where your parents died.

You were too young to actually remember what happened. You were still just a baby back then. But... well, the stories Grandpa told you about it. The old archive footage you saw from the documentaries and shit. From everything you've seen and heard, perhaps it was for the better that you didn't remember any of it.

"You remember, don't you, Milly?" A crotchety, familiar voice croaks to your left. "The pain and humiliation the 'Allied Nations' piled upon us."

You crane your head to the left, and there, slightly obscured in the gloom, was Grandpa himself!

That... that was impossible. Grandpa passed away years ago, you remember now. Was this a dream? A memory? Maybe a little of both?

"Of course, Grandpa." You respond. "I remember."

"That's my girl!" Grandpa leans forward, his expression as grim as it always was. "And you remember what happened that night, yes?"

"Only what you told me." You reply somewhat warily.

"Good. Good. Refresh my memory, then." Grandpa nods.

"Dad... was manning one of the AA batteries as part of the city defense force." You frown as you try to recall everything. "Mom... Mom went out to look for him when the bombs started falling."

"She was always such a foolish girl." Grandpa sighs.

"Don't talk about Mom like that!" You blurt out.

"Oh?" Grandpa leans in even closer. You can smell his alcohol stained breath now. "Interesting that you would presume to know your mother when you never even knew her past a year of age."

"W-well, she must have had a good reason." You mumble. "She... she must have just been worried about Dad-"

"The AA batteries would have been the first targets hit in order to clear the way for the Allied bombers." Grandpa points out grimly. "The chances of my- your father surviving the opening stages of the attack were abysmally low. She would have stood a greater chance of surviving if she had left with us."

He... he had a point there. You couldn't really find any way to rebut it.

"Angry, of course." You scowl. "They took everything from me. From us."

"Yes. Yes!" Grandpa smiles as he grips you hand. His skin was warm to the touch, rough and calloused like you remember. "Then you remember the words."

"Of course I do, Grandpa." You nod.

"Then remember. Etch these words into your heart. Your very being." Grandpa eyes then glare directly into yours with a burning intensity that equaled the fires that consumed Hoffnung. "Ustio, Osea, Yuktobania... all must burn."

---

Your eyes open a second time, though this time, you're immediately blinded by sunlight shining directly into your face.

"Gah!' You yelp as squint reflexively.

As your vision clears, though, you notice you're in the same hospital room, though now well lit and more clearly visible. You look to your side and see-

"MILLY!" Vicky wails. "You're awake!"

"Hey Vick- GAH!" You yelp as Vicky practically tackles you, knocking you back down on the hospital bed with a tight hug. "What the heck has gotten into you?!"

"You were unconscious for almost two days." Misono explains, much calmer than Vicky as expected. "It seems that battle with the Raven greatly taxed your body."

"Is that so?" You say as you instinctively pat Vicky's head as she hugs you. "I feel fi- AGH!"

That's when the soreness finally hits you. It feels like every single muscle in your body has been torn to shreds likes spaghetti. Every nerve in your body aches and burns like fire.

"That is why you've been confined to the hospital so far." Misono adds. "Even though you're awake, you won't be able to leave without Bandit's permission.:"

Well, it wasn't like you were complaining as you continue to pat Vicky's head to comfort you.

"We were all worried sick about you, you know!" Vicky sniffs indignantly. "Going off and trying to be the hero like that!"

"I was doing what I felt would best protect the squadron. To protect you." You sigh. "I mean, that's what a flight lead is supposed to do, right?"

"You got it the other way around!" Vicky pouts. "It's supposed to be the wingmate who protects their lead!"

"We'll agree to disagree then." You chuckle.

"Jeez." Vicky huffs. "Well, at least it's good to see you back to your normal self."

"What's that supposed to mean?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Well, we were taking turns keeping an eye on you while you were out." Vicky explains,. "When me and Misono were here, you were mumbling in your sleep and sweating a storm. Did... did something happen while you were out?"

"I was just reliving an old memory." You say, simply shrugging it off, though Grandpa's ominous words still ring through your thoughts. "Nothing to worry about."

"Oh, o-okay." Vicky nods. She doesn't look quite convinced, but doesn't say anything further.

At that moment, the door swings open and Misono returns, followed by Bandit, who was looking as cool and collected as ever. Did anything ever make him emotional?

"It looks like you recovered well, Red." Bandit give a simple nod.

"Man, is that all you have you say?" You roll your eyes jokingly. "Not even worried about me at all?"

"He was the most worried, in fact!' Misono giggles.

"If it weren't for Alanna, he probably would've carried you to the hospital himself!" Vicky adds.

Oh jeez, THAT was something you'd rather forget. Getting carried to the hospital by an Ustian like a damsel in distress.

Huh, now that you think about it, you honestly didn't really mind the the thought of being carried to safety by Bandit-

Wait, you need to focus!

"Anyways, Boss, when am I getting out of here?" You ask him.

Bandit is quiet for a second before turning to Vicky and Misono.

"Can you two give us a moment alone, please? I need to speak with her privately."

"What? Why?" Vicky blinks.

"Do not question your superior." Misono tuts as she gently grabs Vicky by the collar and pulls her toward the door. "We will be back later, then!"

Bandit nods as they leave, and waits for a few seconds until the door closes before turning back to you.

"Red, I reviewed all of the radar telemetry as well as your gun camera footage, and I've come to the conclusion that the Raven was being piloted by a human." He says

"What?" You blink. "How do you know?"

"Call it a hunch." Bandit shrugs. "But more importantly, this pilot seemed to be solely focusing on you that entire time. Drones don't do that. They don't hold grudges."

"Huh? You mean I've faced this pilot before?" You blink.

"It's not that hard to figure out." Bandit sighs. "Remember any mysterious aces flying an all black plane that you've repeatedly defeated or chased from the field multiple times?"

And that's when it hits you.

"End?" You frown.

"That's my guess." Bandit nods. "And if we're operating under the assumption that a secret Belkan ultranationalist group is pulling the strings behind the chaos in Usea, it's not that much of a stretch to think that this could be the same pilot."

"Okay, so we shoot them down like we've done before!" You say confidently.

"About that." Bandit looks at you grimly. "I suggest you take take some extended leave. You need to recover and cool off."

"I... I guess that makes sense." You concede.

It's then that you notice Bandit quite visibly raise his eyebrow. That was a level of emotion you rarely see from him.

"What? Did I say something weird?" You frown.

"No, it's just..." Bandit actually chuckles. "I didn't expect you to acquiesce so easily. Normally you'd kick and scream like crazy at the mere thought of being pulled off the flight line."

"Well, maybe feeling like complete shit has something to do with it." You groan as you lean back in your bed. "But that's not all there is to it, is there?"

"It's also a measure to protect you against End. We don't know if that encounter then was premeditate or by accident. If you really are being targeted, that's something we need to account for."

"It'll be a big problem for the squad, huh?" You sigh.

"It'll be a big problem for YOU." Bandit sighs. "This may sound surprising, but you're NOT the best pilot out there."

"Yeah, yeah, I get it. I get it." You sigh. "Don't worry, I'll take advantage of my free vacation. Assuming the rest of you can do fine without my glorious skills."

"That's all I ask." Bandit grins. "Someone will bring along the necessary forms shortly, so you won't have to wait long."

"Yeah, yeah, I'll fill it out." You sigh, and then notice Bandit still staring at you. "Yeah? Got something else to say?"

"It's just..." Bandit shakes his head. "Are you feeling all right, Red?"

It's been established she is personally fine with Sapin, for instance I don't know her opinions on the Erusean Question but I imagine she'd be fine with them too out of anti Osean solidarity. The only country she HATES is Osea, and even that might not be extended to random people.

this guy has the right idea tho. We can overthow the crazies and turn it into a standard rebel group instead of COBRA.
>>
>>3845425
How would you de-radicalize an entire COBRA group? Punch them into submission?
>>
>>3845444
Every group has factions. Just gotta latch onto the ones who are smart enough to realise that nuking Osea out of spite wont win our freedom. There are better ways to do that. Like, say, Guerrilla Warfare. Queen Milly will no doubt find a way.
>>
>>3845459
>Just gotta latch onto the ones who are smart enough to realise that nuking Osea out of spite wont win our freedom.
You're assuming that such people still exist in that organization. Groups that take extreme positions only to fail in their goals tend to go "we failed because we weren't extreme enough" and push out anyone with more moderate positions.

"It's nothing." You assure Bandit. "Just a bit tired, that's all."

"If you say so." Bandit nods. He doesn't look quite convinced, but he doesn't press the issue further. "Anyways, do you have a mind of where to go?'

Huh, now THAT was something you hadn't really thought about. There were a couple places that immediately came up. You could head home to Dinsmark. Meet up with Uncle and Professor Fleisher and see what they were up to, or something. Would be nice being in Belka again, too.

Then again, it's also been a while since you've seen Amy or Lillian. Maybe you could hook up with them in Ustio or Osea respectively.

Finally, you heard Karla was still over at the Lighthouse helping with the recovery and repair efforts there...

"Fiiiiiine." You pout as you lean back on your bed. "I'll be a good girl, then."

"I'm sure you will." Bandit gives a slight, lighthearted grin. "Get some rest."

Bandit then takes his leave, and with nothing else to do, you pick up the remote and flip the TV on.

Ugh, OBC News. You quickly change the channel to find something more watchable...

---

Unfortunately, your departure from Fort Grays didn't really have much fanfare. Apparently, all the newly arrived IUN squadrons, including the Ravens, were immediately being put to work tracking down the rogue penal fighters. From what you hear, their AWACS was a real slave driver, too. Well, in either case, there wasn't anybody around to bid you farewell as you boarded the military transport assigned to take medical evacuees to Oured.

The flight to Oured, and then the commercial flight to Dinsmark were both equally uneventful. Time seemed to blur as you constantly dipped in and out of consciousness thanks to your G-force induced injuries.

You don't see Grandpa again, though, but his parting words still ring through your head.

Finally, you arrive at Dinsmark International Airport, your feet finally touching some genuine Belkan dirt. It's basically already early morning, so you got the entire day ahead of you. All you'd need to do is call a cab...

You grab a cab ride back to your actual home. Just a rather modest apartment, since you were rarely around anyways. Uncle helped you keep the rent paid and the place kept clean while you were on deployment.

You quickly shuffle in to your apartment, closing the door behind you and getting much, MUCH needed shower. Once you were cleaned up and dressed, you begin doing a quick, cursory inspection of your apartment to make sure everything was in order. Didn't seem like there was anything out of the ordinary. However, when you look at the mail slot, you notice something odd in the pile of mail on the floor.

You kneel down and pick what looks to be... a Grunder Industries business card?

There was no name on it, but a simple contact number.

You felt something in your stomach twist. Were they looking to recruit you? Why now, of all times? Was there some kind of darker agenda behind this?

Grunder Industries was one of the largest weapons manufacturers and R&D firms on the planet. They were pretty big fish in the defense contracting world...

"Ah, Milly, I was wondering when you would call." A familiar, regal voice greets you. "Interested in a position at Grunder Industries, then?"

Erwin?! It couldn't be him, could it? He was part of One Belka along with you... and now he's working for Grunder? Or was there more to this?

"Hah, not surprised that I'm working for a legitimate company?" Erwin chuckles. "Then again, I never imagined you would be part of the Belkan Air Defense Force."

Somehow, you get the feeling he didn't mean that as a compliment.

"There were... developments." You say, glancing at your doors and windows, looking to see if there was anybody prowling outside. "What's this all about?"

"Like I said, due to recent events, Grunder Industries has a few open positions now. We were wondering if you would be interested in joining our company."

"What kind of position?" You narrow your eyes.

"Well, we are in in need of capable test pilots." Erwin explains. "And your record and qualifications so far appear to be impeccable. I can guarantee you that the pay and benefits will be vastly superior to whatever the government can offer you."

I'm kinda on the other side of the coin here. I don't particularly mind making Belka great again and I can see where Milly's anger with Osea comes from, it's just that as someone who's country still has to deal with radicals, I think going to them for that sort of thing in a very bad idea.
>>
>>3846588
I would point put that judging by her interactions so far, Milly hasn't really abandoned the ideals that One Belka was supposedly fighting for.
It's their methods that she clearly drew a hard disagreement left. There's a difference between being the Mujahadeen and dropping nukes out of nothing but spite.
This is something we can work with.

You take a few breaths to calm yourself down. Okay, it may be nothing. Maybe he's NOT involved in a Belkan conspiracy of some kind!

At the very least, you should go see what he has to say.

You glance at your drawer, where you kept both a pocket knife and your personal sidearm. Some of your One Belka habits never went away, after all. Never knew when a concealed weapon could come in handy.

You'd preferably want to bring your sidearm, but it was a bit harder to hide and you weren't sure how Erwin would react if he spotted it. A pocket knife was a bit more innocuous and smaller, so it could escape his notice.

Or, well, you could give him the benefit of the doubt that he wasn't out to harm you? Hopefully.

You opt to bring just the pocket knife. It was better than nothing and a gun was probably a bit of overkill, honestly.

Nevertheless, you stow the knife away in your pocket and exit your apartment, making your way to the cafe just across the street as Erwin instructed...

You don't notice anything out of the ordinary as you head over to the cafe. Already, you could see Erwin sitting casually at one of the tables. It looked like he was alone, unless the other patrons were disguised agents or something. Unlikely, but a distinct possibility.

"Milly!" Erwin beams. "It's nice to see you doing well after all this time!"

"I wish I could say the same for you." You reply cautiously as you take a seat at the table he picked out. "So are you going to tell me what's going on?"

"Well, Grunder Industries is offering you a position, that much is true." Erwin explains happily. "Surely that's all you need to hear?"

"I'm almost 100% sure you're hiding something." You scowl as you cross your arms. "So quit bullshitting me and tell me what's going on. From one ex-OB member to another."

"I see you're still just as sharp as ever." Erwin's smile doesn't waver for one second. "You will not simply just be a test pilot for Grunder Industries. That will just be your official job title for paperwork reasons. Really, we need good pilots willing to advance Grunder's interests.

"If these past few years has taught us, it's that reunification is a pipe dream. An impossibility." Erwin snorts. "The fools in Ustio and South Belka have been thoroughly brainwashed by Osean propaganda. There can be no peace as long as Osea and its allies exist. All of them must burn."

"It really is that simple." Erwin nods. "We have agents planted all over the world, ready to sow more chaos and confusion and bring the whole thing crashing down."

"You make it sound like all those theories of Belka backing Erusea were true." You frown.

"Resorting to using drones?" You raise an eyebrow.

"I know they're rather unpopular among pilots, but there are quite a number of advantages." Erwin nods. "Not only do they negate our manpower disadvantage, but they also follow orders without question and do not disobey their orders."

You get the feeling that last bit was aimed squarely at you, which prompts to ask.

"Why even bother trying to recruit me if you know I left OB?" You narrow your eyes.

"Oh, believe me, the higher ups were enthusiastic about the idea at all, but I was able to convince them" Erwin smiles. "I think it's not too late to bring you back into the fold. Whatever traitorous thoughts that Valkyrie witch planted in you, can be removed."

"Well, you don't have to make your decision straight away." Erwin adds as he stands up from his seat. "You have my number, so you can contact me at any time you decide to return to our true cause."

Milly idolizes the Knights of Belka, seeing them as the ideal Belkan warriors. To this end, her goal of Belkan Revitalization is augmented by her knightly aspirations.

Milly is not a mercenary. She fights for the cause she finds just. A Knight can't be bought. A knight swears their sword

Personal Aspects

>A Red Comet
Milly is shown to be agressive and passionate in both battle and beliefs. This has advantages and disadvantages.
>But My Best Friend is Black!

>Gotta Hide your Power Level
With Milly's mentors holding opposite political views to hers, a necessity. But there are very deep convictions inside this girl.
This leads into
>I like you, you vote third party!
With her friends Milly seems to have no problem opening up. Possibly because few hail from a nation involved in the Wars. A example being Sea Dragon team, who she knew for like 5 minutes. Also the Princess of Erusea, who we laid out our convictions too.
(Which we don't even do with Bandit!)
>Oh, Camelot!
Driven to achieve greatness in the name of her nation and her Knightly aspirations. One day she shall be a Sword that King Siegfried himself would wield!
----

Obviously just my personal thoughts.
>>
>>3852317
Well, I think Milly found a new type of enemy in the future.

>>3852346
Do you think Milly is more along the lines of Indigo, or Rot's idea of a Knight?

There's one thing that I know, and it's that if Milly wants to milk out that Knight persona to its fullest, she has to come to terms with the eventuality of losing. Last thing we need is for another Rot 1 who can't even look into the camera.
>>
>Do you think Milly is more along the lines of Indigo, or Rot's idea of a Knight?

Certainly a good question. I think there is a strong argument to be made that she is the Red Swallow come again. On the other hand, Indigo certainly plays up the KNIGHT more. Probably a mix in all honesty. I can imagine child Milly sitting on Grandpa's knee fascinated with both men. Meeting Fleischer would probably sting given the state he's in.

>There's one thing that I know, and it's that if Milly wants to milk out that Knight persona to its fullest, she has to come to terms with the eventuality of losing. Last thing we need is for another Rot 1 who can't even look into the camera.

I don't think Milly would become epileptic over getting shot down. I think like Fleischer, it would take a series of events to break her. He lost his squad, his perfection, and 2/3rds of his nation. Why? Because he wasn't good enough to beat a mercenary. The poster boy of the Air Force.
That will do something to a man.
I also think Milly is the type to be consumed with anger instead of despair in that case.

Milly already knows Fleisher, that's who 'The Professor' is.

I think Milly and Fleisher both prefer a bottom-up people driven type of nationalism compared to Grunder's top-down secret conspiracy nationalism. pic related >>3846519
That's why it makes more sense to me that Milly would join a group like OB than Grunder, also because getting paid a large amount to do what she believes in feels icky, like she has replaced her morals with money.
>>
>>3852584
I'm inclined to agree. But from what Erwin is saying it appears One Belka and Grunder are one and the same. Or at least working closely together. Although whether their leadership is the same is up in the air. I'm sure we'll find out down the line. Hopefully there are plenty of pilots who haven't sold out to the Man. Grunder is useful, but they should be part of the good fight, not the supreme leaders.
>>
So how do you think Milly would act if she ever got the chance to meet The Demon Lord of the Round Table?

I think it'd mess her up more if he was more of a Knight in Ace Style.
>>
>>3853693
Cipher is the No.1 Belkan Ace, so she'd probably be very excited.
>>
>>3852584
If anything secret conspiracies is the reason for the failure of unification. Grunder lost its focus on making Belka strong, and instead wants to just burn it all. Millie would instead build up her own faction of true nationalists that want to make Belka the envy of other nations. She knows war will not further her goals, but if she can convince them to willingly join then there won't be problems. Granted it can still fail but due to her knight ideals she would want to convince others to join as brothers in arms.
>>
>>3853942
I think a peacful reunification if possible is obviously better. At the same time conflict is inevitable. Lasting, serious change wont come about via just words. Action is needed as well. Nuclear Genocide obviously should be off the board. But the Oseans simply must be driven out by force. Words wont work with them.
>>
>>3854528
We could go Belkan conspiracy. Take over Grunder itself and turn people to our ideals.
>>
>>3852433
Either style aside, I think that Milly would do well if she tempered herself a bit through the lessons and words of the oldest of the Belkan Aces, Dietrich Kellerman, AKA Silber 1 (who should be mid-70s by present day if he's still around).

>>
>>3854697
Not sure how likely that will be with Uncle Weiss wanting Milly to have nothing to do with OB lest she's caught and made an example.

Though it would be cool to be a secret agent and get intel/flight data/new equipment to give Milly an edge when going up against END (provided that the flight data Milly gives doesn't help END). Hell, maybe she'll get launched into low orbit via prototype Space Plane, and realize how small everything is and get an epiphany that the world needs no borders?

I think purging the Nihilists is a must have.
Just gotta become popular and win support with the pilots more interested in Making Belka Great Again than simply burning Osea to the ground. Honest violence is a thing, but nuking cities doesn't solve the actual problems. If we could find sympathizers within the breakaway states, that would also be helpful. I'm thinking guerrila warfare. The Oseans must respond with violence, and in turn lose the shoddy moral premise they enjoy.
>Uncle Weiss wanting Milly to have nothing to do with OB lest she's caught and made an example.

Uncle Weiss can have a front row seat when our militias march triumphantly through the capital and the Crimson Queen soars above to the cheers of the masses. Neo One Belka.

I think we may have gotten a bit ahead of ourselves in terms of long term plans.

Right now, Milly's quest should be focused on getting the good reputation of being Belka's poster child, and getting knighted. And hopefully not getting killed along the way.

these are fair points, which is why we should obviously limit our attacks to military targets. We just need to convince the Oseans that their occupation is an exercise in futility. Superweapons are perfectly viable if used properly, we just need to avoid being autistic with them.
>>
next session when?
>>
First we should start with not getting ganked by grunder for ratting them out, as there is no way they don't have someone monitoring us after that meeting, I would be surprised if there wasn't someone outside the building right now...
>>
>>3856908
Easy enough. Just avoid mentioning anything incriminating. A test pilot job is hardly unheard of.
>>
>>3857276
That's if the osean cucks don't immediately vote to rat them out
>>
>>3857281
If the best Grunder can manage is Grabacr and Ofnir, the two worst squadrons Belka has ever managed to produce, then I'm not worried about telling them to go fuck themselves.
>>
>>3856817
Instead we build up Belka as an economic powerhouse and outshine all other nations. Make them want to reunite with Belka.
>>
>>3857361
I don't really think we can affect the economics that much, Milly seems more suited to being a symbol of some sort.
>>
>>3857288
Not entirely opposed to skimming some free stuff from Grunder if we work undercover to get intel. Probably would go after things that would give us an edge in battle like some energy weapons, new plane materials, improved anti-g suit, etc.
>>
>>3857288
Grunder is a key piece to the puzzle is the thing. Weapons and planes don't grow on trees. They need to be made. I don't like a Corp fronting this thing, but the simple reality is that they have the good shit.
>>3857459 Brings up a good point. Working for Grunder while forwarding the designs of Neo One Belka is probably inevitable. I think we just need to step carefully and see how enmeshed the two are together.
(Aka, if all of the rebel leadership also holds seats on Grunder's board, that's probably a bad sign)
>>
>>3857531
Honestly, I'm surprised Grunder's stock hasn't hit the toilet after AC5. Hell, I'm surprised anyone trusts them after that and all the conflicts they have directly or indirectly had a hand in. Guess they must make some really good stuff for people to overlook their past.
>>
>>3857531
The most effective method of reunifing Belka isn't in the air, it's on the ground, burning down Osean bases and firebombing their troops until they leave. And anything related to Grunder will be next to impossible to become independent of them, they have their hands shoved deep into it all, and just want to use Milly as a pawn in some stupid plan.
>>
>>3857539
>The most effective method of reunifing Belka isn't in the air, it's on the ground, burning down Osean bases and firebombing their troops until they leave.

That's generally how battle works yeh. But they'll still need a firm air corps to deal with the swarms of Osean craft. If AC has taight us anything it is the fact that air war will always be important in this setting.

>they have their hands shoved deep into it all, and just want to use Milly as a pawn in some stupid plan.

Undoubtedly. But all alliances are in the end built upon mutual exploitation. This is particularly why we need to become a potent enough symbol that we can rally people to OUR flag within the insurrection. The first step to that is getting the best equipment available.
Which Grunder provides.

"My my, I didn't expect you to be back home so soon, Milly." Uncle smiles as you sit down at his little tea table.

Having "retired", Uncle Weiss no longer lived within Dinsmark proper, instead opting to take residence in a quaint little mountainside villa. It was a practice not uncommon among Belkan retirees, as it got them away from the bustle of city life, and more importantly, a greater measure of privacy.

You take a look at the long, winding path up to the villa from the main road, which was basically a football field's length of open grass. Extremely difficult to post any sort of surveillance or to sneak up to the villa proper. Uncle chose his castle well.

A nice, cool mountain breeze was blowing, which felt nice. Something you could never experience in the more tropical environment near the Lighthouse.

"Oh, well, you know. Stuff happened." You shrug.

"Then you wouldn't mind telling me all about it, then!" Uncle chortles.

"Well...." You sigh. "On my last mission I got bounced by a Raven of all things, outta freaking nowhere!"

"Yes, Bandit told me about that." Uncle nods with a frown. "It's a very concerning development."

"You wouldn't happen to know anything about it?" You wonder.

"While the specifics escape me, it is certainly a very high performance fighter. At least a generation ahead of most warplanes in service right now." Uncle narrows his eyes. "It also happens to be a Grunder design they created for Erusea."

"I thought they only ever made two of those?" You frown.

"Two that had autonomous drone control systems." Uncle nods. "But while the drone data is gone, the actual specifications for the plane remain, and both Grunder and Erusea retain the rights to manufacture them. It wouldn't surprise me if manned versions were produced."

"You seem to know an awful lot about Grunder..." You raise an eyebrow as you sip at your tea.

"Ever since the Gray Men incident, we've been keeping a close eye on Grunder's activities." Uncle shrugs casually. "Standard procedure, honestly."

"I thought getting rid of the Gray Men cleaned up the company?" You point out.

"If only things were that simple." Uncle shakes his head. "However, given the 'curious' proliferation of advanced Grunder weaponry to.... questionable parties, it most certainly is not that simple."

"Why do you care so much, anyways?" You frown. "Even if Grunder's still infiltrated by Belkan nationalists, that's Osea's problem, isn't it? No reason for Belka to get involved."

"Not many people realize just how close Osea came to declaring war on Belka when the Gray Men were exposed." Uncle responds coolly. "If it weren't for President Harling's insistence that no punitive action be taken against Belka, Belkan/Osean relations would have been irreparably damaged."

"So close, that not a word of it was ever uttered to the public." Uncle nods grimly. "Even with their fighting strength sapped from their war with Yuktobania, Osea still would have been more than a match for our small defense force at the time."

"So we're still living under Osea's boot, huh?" You shake your head.

"For the time being, yes." Uncle nods. "Unfortunately, the government has starkly different ideas from Grunder on how to reverse that situation."

You take a deep sigh. If Uncle already knew you met with Grunder, then he probably already had a good idea of what was going on and was just using this as an opportunity to test you. You might as well just tell him the truth to avoid any more hassle.

So you explain the whole story, about how Grunder reached out to you and you met with Erwin, a former "comrade" from One Belka who was apparently part of Grunder now.

"Hm, yes, we were aware of his One Belka leanings, but never had the necessary evidence to try him." Uncle nods. "It's unsurprising Grunder decided to overlook that little aspect in the hiring process."

"So what do you think is their game?" You ask him. "Why come recruit me if they've got OB in their ranks? They should know what I've done."

"My guess? Probably an excuse for them to keep a closer eye on you." Uncle scowls. "I'm sure I don't have to tell you that Grunder has sunk its influence deep into Usea, and have every reason to keep the region unstable and in chaos. Hence why the IUN has been facing so many difficulties in its peacekeeping missions right now."

"Is it really that simple?" You ask, not fully convinced. "There has to be more than that."

"They also probably want to collect your pilot data." Uncle continues. "Having lost all of their previous drone data, they need to rebuild it. They've been sending out feelers to many current and former Belkan pilots, in fact."

"Even the Professor?" You gasp.

"I'm sure you can already imagine the answer he gave them." Uncle smiles mirthfully.

"Okay, now it's your turn." You grunt, crossing your arms. "What's this grand plan the government has that they're so certain will work?"

"Well, another one of Harling's legacies." Uncle leans forward. "After the Circum-Pacfiic War, it seemed like he realized keeping South Belka under Osean administration was not viable long term. However, he couldn't just hand South Belka back. It would give the impression he would be legitimizing the Gray Men, which the Osean public would never accept. So he put a plan in motion."

"A plan?" You raise an eyebrow. "But Harling served out his term, and he's.... kinda dead now."

"He very well knew he wouldn't be in office by the time his plan was realized, so he entrusted it close members in his cabinet." Uncle looks at you. "Six years from now. Do you know the significance of that?"

"Um...." You pause as you try to think about it. "No, what?"

"2025 will mark the 30th anniversary of the Belkan War." Uncle narrows his eyes. "This has not been made public, but to coincide with the release of the Razgriz Files in 2020, the Osean government will announce a formal North Osea Referendum."

You heart stops at those words.

"You don't mean-"

"The general population of North Osea will have the opportunity to vote to stay with Osea, or return to Belkan administration." Uncle nods.

2. Osea agrees to withdraw military from voting areas. One Belka uses this as a chance to rise up and seize our clay by force. Osea chimps out.
3. Osea rigs the election so blatantly OB launches attacks. Everyone chimps out.

"Honestly, it sounds like a scam to me." You cross your arms in a skeptical huff. "How are we going to have any assurance the Oseans aren't going to just rig the vote?"

"Belka will naturally keep a close eye on the election process as well." Uncle nods. "Though yes, I do suspect the only reason Harling's political rivals agreed to the referendum is that they don't expect it to succeed. After all, 30 years is a long time and many South Belkans have grown comfortable with Osean rule."

"And why are we even humoring this, then?" You wonder.

"Because we might as well take a chance to retake South Belka without spilling any blood." Uncle points out. "However, for this to work, we need to give South Belkans a reason to believe in Belka again."

"You mean they don't already?"

"Why would South Belkans want to rejoin Belka when we're seen as nothing more than backstabbers, schemers, and terrorists?" Uncle asks.

You... you don't really have a good answer to that.

"This is why Command fronted you and Bandit to the IUN." Uncle continues. "It's a chance to put Belka back into the international spotlight in a positive way. Belkan aces flying in the skies once again, protecting the weak and meting out justice. It would do a great deal in raising national spirit and improving public image, yes?"

"That makes sense." You concede.

"And it serves the dual purpose of improving relations with IUN member states. It will be the IUN overseeing the voting process as a neutral international party, after all."

So... it was all coming together now in your head.

I am 100% on board with the Cossete Strategy. It would also be showing solidarity with a traditional enemy of Osea. "So, you're saying Command is trying to prop us up as heroes?" You blink in surprise.

"Essentially." Uncle confirms.

"Does this mean I get to be a Knight?" You ask rather hopefully.

Uncle laughs at that suggestion.

"Well, you never know. Perhaps the return of a new generation of Belkan knights is something we need right now."

"So, uh, now that I think about it...." You frown. "Why'd Command pick ME out of all people for this?"

"Do you really have to ask?" Uncle laughs. "You're the closest thing to a successor to Karla, the Valkyrie herself. She's still fondly remembered in South Belka, after all. Not to mention, you're South Belkan yourself, and a survivor of Hoffnung. You're a reminder that Osea's hands during the Belkan War weren't clean, either."

"Ah yeah, that." You nod, remembering Ellisa.

"She was also the one who suggested you be the one to take on the role." Uncle smiles. "She said it would probably fit you more."

"So uh, you think the government could shell out for a better plane?" You ask innocently.

Hey, it couldn't hurt to try, right? Your Su-30 was a respectable plane, but after your run in with the Raven, something a bit more high end would be nice.

"Hmmmmm." Uncle pauses to think. "That would be something to pass through Command. Procurement is rather limited at the moment. I can't say you'd be able to get a next generation fighter, but an incremental upgrade over whatever you are already flying should be more manageable."

"So, can you let them know, then?" You ask innocently.

"I'll check with my contacts." Uncle nods. "Anyways, what do you plan to do for the rest of your leave?"

Well, you followed everyone's advice and just took it easy. If Uncle said you were covered, then you believed him.

So you spent the next few days just catching up with some old schoolmates and acquaintances, at least the ones still living in Dinsmark. Most of them had gone into civilian life, which you honestly couldn't really fault them for. Not really many reasons to join the Belkan military these days, honestly.

You also spent some time doing some shopping. With your back pay, you had quite a bit of disposable cash and you wasted no time grabbing a few new sets of civilian wear, as well as a few souvenirs for Vicky and Misono. You're sure they'd appreciate them.

Hmmm, but should you get something for the Professor? He normally didn't like other people buying things for him but you felt this was a bit of a special occasion!

You decide to get him something with a little more permanence and a lot more personalized. With that in mind, you grab a small model of a Su-30 like the one you're flying right now. It was simple enough to assemble overnight, and to add a bit of a personal touch you paint it up a bit to resemble your own personalized paint scheme as well, with the red tail fins and feathered wingtips.

You're sure he'll love it!

The next day, you're completely ready as you trot up to the University of Dinsmark, where the Professor taught. However, as you approach his office door, you notice that it's closed, which you found odd. The Professor usually kept his door open whenever he was in, in case any of his students needed to ask him something. It would only be closed if he was already meeting with someone, but you were scheduled for this time...

As you near the door, you think you can hear people talking on the other side, but it's difficult to hear through the door.

You manage to crack open the door just enough to get a good peek inside without anybody noticing. Immediately, you could see the Professor sitting calmly at his desk, giving a calm yet serious glare at... Erwin?! Your old OB "comrade" was sitting across from the Professor, flanked by a pair of large men in suits. An obvious intimidation play.

"I thought that I was rather clear in our phone call that I'm not interested in your 'offer', Erwin." The Professor growls, more disappointed than angry. "I want nothing to do with Grunder."

"You wouldn't even want the opportunity to fly again?" Erwin asks rather smugly.

"I resigned from the Belkan Air Force of my own volition." The Professor calmly points out. "I have no doubts that if I expressed interest, they would accept me back. However, those days are behind me."

"It would be a shame to have all those flying skills go to waste." Erwin sighs.

"Better than to sell them to some corporation like a lowly mercenary." The Professor scowls visibly, now getting annoyed. "If you have nothing new to say, I suggest you leave."

"If you insist. If you change your mind-"

"I won't."

"-you know where to find us." Erwin gets up and starts making his way to the door, his suited thugs close behind.

You quickly step away from the door and hide around the corner as Erwin and his goons step out. He pauses for a second, looking both ways down the the hall before heading off in the opposite direction,.

Jeez, even coming all the way out here to recruit the Professor? Guess they were willing to do anything.

Once you were sure they were gone, you head over to the Professor's office, where you see him still at his desk, grading papers as if nothing had happened.

"Ah! Milly. Right on time." The Professor smiles.

"Hey, Prof!" You grin as you happily plop down in the chair across from his desk. "How are things going?"

"Just dealing with some troublesome students." The Professor sighs.

"Including me?" You grin.

"Especially you." The Professor chuckles, his spirits raised by the little joke. "So hear you're flying for the IUN right now."

"Yeah, well, orders are orders, you know?" You shrug.

"There is value in your work, make no mistake about it." The Professor nods. "And I hear you've made quite a name for yourself, 'Red Tail'."

"Hahah, am I really that famous?" You laugh lightly.

"Well, the satellite communications blackout has slowed the word somewhat, but word of your exploits has finally started to filter over to this continent." The Professor smiles. "Still, it's good to see that you're doing well."

"So uh, what exactly do you think of the IUN?" You ask a bit cautiously. You actually didn't know what the Professor thought about the international organization.

"The general idea of the IUN has merit." The professor nods. "The Usean continent has been the most troubled. Constant wars and coup attempts have eroded the stability of the region over the years. The IUN an the ISAF before it have been a critical part of managing Usea's affairs."

"Even though the whole organization is basically run by Osea?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Even Osea has an interest in keeping Usea's problems contained on their own continent." The Professor sighs. "Still, with no conflict at home, quelling it abroad is a natural course of action, is it not?"

"So do you agree with them or not?" You frown, still not getting his point. He could get kinda long winded like that.

"I would say yes." The Professor nods after a brief pause, gazing out his office window. "Nations need stability, or at least the illusion of it, in order to function."

>I guess you have a point.

Fair points, but the orginization could easily be weaponized by Osea. What would those pilots do if ordered to face their home nation?
It's an extension of Osean influence

I mean i don't think anyone here is rejecting the very idea of the IUN. But i *do* think there are legitimate concerns to be had about any organization where the donations, equipment and manpower come overwhelmingly from one nation.
That kind of influence can be abused.

"I dunno, I still think they're in Osea's pocket." You mumble. "You don't take that much money from one country and stay neutral, right?"

"Well, no organization is perfect, is it?" The Professor gives a wry smile. "But enough of politics for now. What brings you back to Dinsmark?"

"Well, I guess I attracted a little TOO much attention." You mumble.

"An enemy ace?" The Professor raises an eyebrow.

"I guess you could say that, yeah." You nod. "I came out on top of them a couple times, but then they came back in a real souped up plane and gave me a real rough time."

"Ah, a proper rival." The Professor smiles with a bit of sad nostalgia. "I wonder what that feeling is like."

"Well, weren't your rivals with, well, you know..." You taper off, unsure of whether it was right to bring the subject up.

"It was hardly anything so romantic or glorious." The Professor sighs wistfully. "He was nothing more than a nameless mercenary, and I was probably nothing more than a nameless enemy to him. Our one and only encounter was a convergence of fate, but I could hardly call it a 'rivalry'. We only ever faced each other once and never again."

>But you survived. That's all that matters.

"Don't you want a rematch?" You ask curiously. "You know, get back at the Demon Lord and show who's better?"

"I fought for Belka, not for glory.' The Professor shakes his head. "Even assuming I know where the Demon Lord is now, there's no point digging up old feuds. I'm willing to bet he doesn't even remember who I am, if he even cared at all."

Well, that was certainly a bit of a downer. Even after all these years, the Professor was still bothered by the Demon Lord's shadow.

"Well anyways, enough about that subject." The Professor shakes his head. "What silly gift have you gotten for me this time?"

"Jeez, they're not silly! They're totally cool!" You pout as you present the miniature model Su-30 to him. "See?"

"Hm." The Professor picks up the model and examines it with mock seriousness. "Exploring merchandising rights when you become famous, are you?"

"C'mon, Prof!" You roll your eyes at the lame joke.

"I'm kidding, of course." The Professor smiles warmly and sets the model down on his desk, next to the model of a Typhoon painted in his old Rot Squadron colors. "It's very nice. I can tel a great deal of work went into it."

"Heh..." You almost blush at the praise.

"So are any of your students giving you trouble?" You ask, wondering if he would talk about Erwin or something like that.

"Oh, just the usual." The Professor shrugs. "Just asking for me to fudge their grades or give answers to test questions. The usual."

Hm, guess he wasn't about to talk about something as sensitive as that.

"Speaking of troublesome students." The Professor continues. "I heard you have new squadronmates? What are they like?"

"Heh, well..." You grin. "Their names are Vicky and Misono...."

And your conversation carries on well into the night. It was always nice being able to talk to the Professor once in a while...
