You are Ushi Walker, also going by your hero name Loanstar, the half-japanese/half-american wielder of the mighty quirk “Everything is Bigger in Texas", U.A. High first year student, owner of your own figurine, intern of the Ninja Hero Edgeshot and…

"Perimeter guard. Got it." You tell your mentor, holding the small CO2 sensor and punching your free palm to make a bit of noise. "Don't worry sir, Ah- We got this! Not even the wind will escape us, no siree!"

>"I know it won't. I wouldn't leave both of you alone if I didn't think you were able to handle it." He ominously replies, nodding slowly. "But were it to happen, or anything else, I need you to let me know."

>"We'll stand our ground, Sir!" Johai adds, bowing deeply.

Seeing your fellow intern show respect, you stand ramrod straight and salute.

>"We'll be going in, then." Edgeshot says after Johai stands up, lifting his mask up and sliding a nigh identical one in its place, this one with a tube going over his shoulder.

"...How many of those do ya have tucked away?" You let out in a burst of curiosity, pointing at his new mask and the previous one still in his hand.

>"As many as I could need, then a dozen more." The hero answers, turning around with a cool flicker of his scarf.

"Awesome..." You mutter, in honest awe.

You aren't the biggest Edgeshot fan, but it's hard to not admire his mysterious aesthetic and charm.

>"The best!" Johai confirms, sounding happy in what feels like the first time since you've met him.

Both of you solemnly watch the five man band walk into the dark of the mine's maw, somehow not making a noise upon the road as they do so, nor upon the stone as they got inside, disappearing like shadows in the night.

And thus, you are both left out of the adventure, with nothing but the distant sounds of the city's nightlife and the streetlights to keep you company.

Which, considering it is a Tuesday night in a small park within a residential area with an abandoned hill-landmark inside, means that it's dark and awkwardly silent.

Other than the bright displays on your CO2 detectors and their soft beeping every time the wind mixes the air composition a little, the night feels dead.

…And it feels like you'll be here for a while.

Haven't looked in on this quest in forever. Someone wanna explain to me why Ushi's alias is spelled Loanstar instead of Lonestar? Makes her sound like a bank officer.
>>
>>3864284
the whole name is a pun, it is Loanstar because she loans mass from or to someone/something
then it reminds of the lone star state
and in japanese it sounds similar to roan which is a term used to describe cow hides, but that part was incidental
>>
In the dark of the night you face the prospect of what could be hours of nothing in front of this mine, unable to leave, nor to doze off.

Sure, you could start mowing the grass, but you aren't sure you'd like even one person see you do it.

That also brings back your attention to the other silent sentinel standing guard near you, Johai, the red ninja.

Calling it standing would be inaccurate though, as he seems to have found a nice mossy rock to sit cross-legged on. Were it not another teen you know, you'd have entertained the thought of it being a sage of sorts pondering truths unknown.

Instead, you just lift your leg and take a large step closer to him, dragging your other boot behind you with a soft jingling from your spurs.

"So… What was that with the… secret police, Ah guess?" You softly ask, keeping your volume low out of some inherent respect towards the night's sanctity. "...And ain't it weird there were only four of 'em?"

You wouldn't have been surprised if he didn't answer such an unimportant question, or to hear yet another curt answer.

>"I don't think they would appreciate that name..." He answers, his voice trailing into a quiet, amused chuckle. "Those four are Edgeshot's direct link to the city's police department. Every good hero has some trustworthy friends in the force, and those same four have had his back every time he has needed back up."

"Just some work pals, then? But what about the sneakiness?" You press on, sparing a glance to your CO2 detector. Nothing out of the ordinary.

>"It's a rather simple <ninjutsu>, but if I had to hazard a guess as to where they learned it, I'd say they attended Seijin as well." Johai muses, closing his eyes for a few seconds. "Not everyone can be a hero, but everyone with the will to help can be an officer. If that's all true, then they might know each other from even before."

"That's kind of-" You say before Johai cuts you off.

>"Shh!" He hushes you.

Just when you were starting to feel like he wasn't always a prick.

Then both of your CO2 detectors blip. A quick glance shows a spike to 800 that quickly starts normalizing.

"What?" You ask, not bothering with a full sentence.

>"It sounded like something heavy fell in a pond." The ninja answers, the nods, seemingly relaxing. "But the CO2 is back to normal, though."

>What do you do?

>[It may be dark and somewhat dank, but you were around here last night..."Ah reckon there's no pond, is there? Ah'll go have a looksee."]
>[Strange noise in the dark? This is how you end cuffed to a radiator, no way you are checking that out alone. "Get your ass in gear and let's go see what happened."]
>[Wouldn't be all that strange for a branch to fall into a puddle, and it's not like you heard anything yourself. "Some weird noise… It's probably nothing."]

One thing I learned from my time as a security guard: something happens out of the norm? It gets reported whether or not you think its anything.

So wait do we or don't we know that theres any water spots around? If not, call in based on that suspicion. If so, wait for follow up noise if any.
>>
>>3864421
look at the first option, it has Ushi implying that there isn't any pond around, so you can assume that it is not a large water spot.

You stand in a small park with a steep but not exactly large hill in the middle, in its rocky face is the mine entrance. Even if it wasn't there, you are sure it'd still remain, as it seems to be mass of solid rock that doesn't use enough space to be worth removing. ...Also explains why it's a quarry, after all, even if mine is easier to remember.

There are a few mossy benches around the park, with the wild grass eating into the not so beaten path to the mine's entrance and plaque.

When you ran across the rooftops last night, you didn't see any ponds, nor has it rained, as far as you know.

You wouldn't have any issue calling yourself a maverick, and you are almost certain Mr. Aizawa would have called you so himself if he didn't know you well enough already to know you'd be sort of proud of it. Hence why he got you mopping for days unending.

But not even you would ignore such a simple and reasonable order as tell me if something happens, and thus your hand flies to your ear in less than a second, tapping the earpiece to open comms from your side.

>"Are you going to report it?" Johai asks, to which you nod before addressing your mentor.

"Sir? Something sounded... Somewhere?" You start, then take a deep breath and trying to make sense of what little info you have. “Sir! We’ve got suspicious audio up here. Splashin', and no water ah-round to make it. Minor spike in CO2 readings coincided. Sit tight or investigate?”

Instead of an immediate response, you instead hear the sounds of wood being broken, dragged against something harder, and then just smashed, followed by faint arguing by people too far away from Edgeshot's gear. Looking to your side, you can see Johai next to you pay attention as well, probably as puzzled as you are under his mask.

>"Splashing and spike you say?" Comes Edgeshot's voice a few seconds later, slightly distorted. "I need you to scout the area and report anything suspicious. It's a thin lead, scarce even... But when accounting for what we have found and not found so far… we have a few ideas of what it could be."

>"What are we looking for, sir?" Johai asks in stereo, his voice reaching you from both the ninja in the flesh and your earpiece.

>"Anything abnormal on the ground or walls." The elder ninja replies. "Confirm a source or lack of, but don't try to engage."

"What'cha think it is, sir?" You ask, wondering if you might be under attack by some sort of slime-monster person. It's not something unheard of. "Might be useful to know what to avoid."

>"There's been thefts all over the city for the past 7 months. No damages other than the stolen property and some ruined paintjobs, and never anything major." The hero tells you. "We don't know who has done it or what their quirk is, but the way some walls and floors look like they were melted and then solidified after the hits makes the police presume some sort of cold-melting quirk. But it might also be someone able to reach through your costume and skin…"

Ah, just what you needed to hear on the mission to find the rotting villain. Just dandy.

"Sir?" You ask, curious about why his voice trailed off.

>"...Can I trust you to handle it responsibly?" The hero asks, sounding somewhat vulnerable for the first time in this two days. "For all we know there's an illegal tunnel connecting to this place, and smugglers scatter like rats after any kind of trouble. We may not get the jump on them in years."
>>
>"Sorry to interrupt you before your interns Shinya, but that's incredibly reckless. Stupid even." The voice of the officer that gave you your CO2 detectors says, apparently using the same channel. "The kid tries to cuff a villain and gets tricked, or the cow goes to try and smash the villain that killed that dog, it'll fall on you."

>"If anything, I trust Loanstar to survive." The hero argues. "Trickshot might be rigid, but he's good at following orders."

>"With all due respect, Don't Die might be too tough an order to follow." The officer continues.

"...Trickshot?" You mutter, looking at the one hero-in-training whose name you did not know.

Johai seems to have a rather sudden interest in the starless night, quickly averting his gaze.

>"Go, find the source of the noise and report back, I can be there in less than a minute if you do find something dire and it's not just inconvenient erosion." Edgeshot then orders you before adopting a slightly more lenient tone. "There's no shame in running if it turns out to be more than a petty thief or shifting geography. Just don't leave the park, this quarry might still kill a block or two if you do."

>"If she ends up in the hospital, that's going to be an international level of negligence. That's not even taking into account that they are still kids in colorful pajamas!" The officer heatedly argues.

>"She's U.A.'s first year champion, she better get used to the pressure before it crushes her." Your mentor replies, making you suddenly aware of the fact that there might be consequences for getting that shiny necklace. "And he has the potential to match her if he finally stops being so complacent. They better know when to stand and when to run by now-"

Then the comms are closed from someone else's end. You can easily open them again the same way, but it feels like it's not the time.

>"Find the source of the sound while not straying far from our post." The young red ninja summarises for the both of you. "And surviving, too."

I doubt that. It’s a lot of ground and the comings and goings of the (assumedly) smugglers haven’t set off anything terrible.

As far as you know, your curriculum has an introduction to detective work… Near the summer break.

...As an opt in.

Needless to say, you don't really know what to do about this. Luckily for you and your mission, it doesn't depend on you alone.

"So, Trickshot! How does one go about skulkin' and the whole bein' unseen thing?" You ask the upperclassman, taking the chance to use his hero name.

Johai sighs before answering, pointing at the hill the quarry belongs to.

>"Well, we have a good craggy wall." He says, then quickly shoves his hands into his pockets before pulling them out and showing his palms, now sporting what looks like a band full of spikes. "Come with me and we should be able to survey the area without being seen ourselves. Hopefully we'll be able to see what's down there."

"Ah got a robot and a thermal camera, does that help?" You offer, taking your phone and Tin off your belt pouches, shaking the phone a bit. "Tin has guns, kinda."

>"Eager to be of assistance, mistress." Tin adds in its peculiar voice, spinning his chainguns and its tail as it takes in whatever is there to be seen.

>"...Yes, that does help." The red ninja says, moving his hand from side to side, seemingly for Tin to follow with its tail. "Let's send the robot-"

"Tin!" You correct him, then smile sheepishly. "...Carry on."

>"-Send Tin to investigate as we watch from above." Trickshot says, sounding slightly more annoyed. "Even if it doesn't see anything we don't, it will keep people's attention away from us.

>What do you do?

You take your little friend and place it on the ground, pat its metallic head, then enlarge it to thee feet. Not much larger than a medical robot from the school, and not much more threatening either.

"Try to go around so in case sumthin' runs, it's towards us." You instruct your robotic friend, unlocking your phone and opening the controller app. "We'll keep an eye or four on ya."

>"I am glad to take the risk for you, mistress." The white robot replies before rolling into the dark on its sturdy treads.

Like the smart machine it is, you can see on your phone how Tin needs no further instruction to go around the park, going behind rocks and mossy benches, avoiding the paths.

"Ah love the little fella, but Ah don't think anyone would see it in full size and not, you know, run away from the <gun-totin' tread-rollin'> red eye robot." You comment.

With that out of the way, you hold onto your phone and tap your thigh to shrink yourself.

Sure, you can do it the same thing by tapping any other body part, but since your shrinking centers on the point of contact, starting closer to the ground is the best way to not fall down.

Becoming a few inches tall in the span of a second, you waste no time before prompting Trickshot to do his part.

"Giddy up!" You eloquently put it, pulling on his leg. "Let's get this done!"

>"What? What are you doing?" He asks, looking honestly confused. "I thought we were going to climb."

"Look pal, Ah can either catch a ride or have a crash course on wall climbing, and Ah don't feel like crashin' none." You explain, pointing at the steep, rocky face of the hill.

>"You were fine jumping last night." He points out, crossing his arms.

You cross your own arms and enlarge yourself back to normal, all to look at him eye to eye.

"Sure, Ah could use mah quirk and get up there mighty quick! Then what? Fall down and splatter like a patty? Ah kind of need to look at the feed too, ya know?" You explain, waving your phone in front of him.

He seems to think it over for a moment, then sighs.

>"...Fine." He says, shrugging. "I don't think you can hug the wall anyway."

"...Ah'll let that one slide." You remark, letting some steam off your nose. "Now let's try to get moving before the sun's up."
You leave your phone in your cleavage for a moment and grab Trickshot's shoulder, then shrink yourself. A simple way to sit on his shoulder while avoiding having to ask to be picked up.
>>
You aren't quite sure what are those things on Johai's hands, and what exactly do they do, but you can't help but admire his climbing prowess as he clings to the rock with ease, ascending in a way that brings Tsuyu to mind. You wonder how are your classmates doing.

Nothing exciting, probably.

As Trickshot climbs the wall using handholds you can barely see, you focus on the twin live feed from Tin's points of view.

In a minute's time you can see the first oddity, both from Tin's feed and with your own eyes.

>"...Littering." Trickshot mutters, seeing the same as you.

Down at ground level, you can see what looks like the back of a young woman by a mossy bench, likely a teenager but clearly a mutant of some sort if the long fish tail and blue skin are enough to go by, emptying a plastic water bottle onto her face before dropping it next to another one already on the ground.

Not the wisest thing to do, you think. If not for the environment, for the large wooden stringed instrument she seems to be carrying on her back.

Tin's feed shows the same thing, with a little bit more information.

As it approaches her from the right, like the duffel bag under the bench, or the fact that she looks dressed like a theme park pirate, without the cool hat.

Likely more important, the wall behind her and almost directly under you seems to be very slightly warmer than it should be. Something similar happens with a bush a few dozen feet away, not as warm as you reckon a human should be, but more than a bush should.

Besides, the fish-girl registers colder too…

>"Huh… Yer a fancy lookin' one." She says as she notices Tin, her japanese ringing with an accent you cannot place. You don't think you have heard it before.

>What do you do?

>[Send Tin to inspect the wall. "If she asks, you are pest control, just go check the wall for confirmation."]
>[No need to risk little Tin, you and Trickshot can cover each other and check the wall out yourselves.]
>[There's your villain, right in front of the affected wall! Attack while you have the jump on her! "Ah dunno if y'all really do this, but why don't we knock her lights out while she ain't looking? Ninjalike!"]
>[You could… get there and ask her? "Miss! Have you… uh... seen or committed, for that matter, any illegal activities 'round here?"]

"Dang, ninja-in's hard." You complain, clearly frustrated. "Ah can't believe Ah miss havin' villains tryin' to kill me. Ah reckon it made it easy to tell who needed a bone recount."

>"What?" Trickshot asks, squinting at your tiny frame. "We can't act, we are lacking information."

"Yeah, that's what Ah'm talkin' 'bout!" You say, waving your hand in the woman's and Tin's direction. "Either we make the whole thing riskier for the three of us, or risk harmin' a gal who was just in the wrong place and being and messin' with the park!"

>"Let's report what we have, Edgeshot surely will know what to do next." The red ninja says.

"Ah reckon askin' someone with more notches on their gun might be best." You agree, then focus on your phone and the controls on screen. "Ah'll just get Tin to go check on the wall, sneaky like, she wo..."

>"Ask Edgeshot before doing anything." Johai insists, cutting you off.

Why don't you do it? You want to ask, then look at what his hands are doing, holding onto the wall. Thus, you start to type a quick set of commands to free your hands.

task main ()
{

Wait, Tin can interpret your words, you don't need to actually code anything.

Roll forwards and pretend to be a lost, simple toy with no pathfinding. If you bump into something, apologise cheerily and turn slightly. Repeat as needed to reach the wall.

"That should do it." You comment, bringing your hand to your ear and opening comms, wasting no time unloading all you need to say. "Sir, we found somethin'... someone? Ah don't see no villains, but we've got a night jogger loiterin' 'nd litterin'... Might be a lookout, Ah'm not sure. There's an odd bush over there and we got Tin on checking the wall too! Ah think that's all!"

>"Suspicious person…" Your mentor muses briefly as the scraping sounds of dragged feet and wood echo behind him. "Keep watch, but don't engage. Never forget that the most dangerous villains are the most unassuming."

"Yeah, the important ones have evil lairs and all-" You manage to say before Trickshot interrupts you.

>"Hold on to that thought!" He tells you in what you can only call whisper-shouting. "We have incoming."

You refrain from closing comms, but still shut your piehole to focus on what you were missing, seeing Tin trying to roll the last few yards towards the wall, showing something interesting on your phone's screen.

...Small pebbles that look much too round for your tastes.

>"Not gonna answer?" You faintly hear the fishy woman say, walking besides Tin as it rolls to the wall, tapping it's head and making the display on your phone slightly blurry with each tap. "Ya look far too expensive to be this kinda dumb."

In a flash of clarity, you take to your phone's link with Tin and ask it to connect to your comms if possible.

In less than a second, you can all hear from the small robot's perspective.

"Boss, Ah think we got them?" You say, nervous about your robot friend down on the ground.
>>
>"That thing's likely fulla cameras. Stop playin' with it 'n tear it down kid." A raspy voice says, seemingly approaching from behind the thermally weird-looking bushes.

A tall and ragged lizard-looking man in what looks like thrift store clothes, or the remains of a burnt down theater.

>"Don't chu think it'd fetcha a few coins, Tokumoto? It's shiny white 'nd all that!" She argues, dragging a finger over Tin's head and-

Sending white liquid flying? The liquid then hits the ground as solid orbs.
Then it clicks. Those were droplets of rock near the wall!
You aren't quite sure of what her quirk actually is, but the ability to liquify solid stuff…
And the crevasse now on top of Tin's head makes your heart skip a beat, her mere finger went through its armor like a hot knife through butter, leaving a clear opening.

The robot, to its credit, plays its role perfectly, paying no mind to the damage and bumbling forwards towards the wall, as if nothing happened.

>"...Not so much now, huh." She says rather sheepishly, then coughs.

>"Cover kinda falls apart then." The raspy voice of the ragged man says. "Nothin' that can't fit in your bag, we gotta get out of town fast."

>"That's it. Stay put, I'll be there in a minute!" Edgeshot says, then cuts off.

>"We found them, now Edgeshot can handle them!" Trickshot merrily says after hearing that.

You aren't that happy about it. What about Tin?

>"Fiiii-ne. You heard the old man, bub. Or not. Yer kinda retarded, ain't chu? Did someone microwave you?" The young woman taunts, dragging her fingers over Tin's white head again, making 4 more marks while the diligent robot continues on its mission, now bumping into the wavely looking wall. "Yeah, it's kinda borin' anyway."

They alredy know that the strange robot belongs to the heroes. They are literally packing their stuff and wrecking the robot just out of spite. Tin suddenly becoming operational and leaving at full speed won't make the difference, maybe they'll speed a little but not enough to escape edgeshot. Oh, you know you are going to get so much shit for this…

But what other choice do you have? Letting them damage Tin further? That ain't happening.

"Hey Trix, think we can get the jump on 'em? Knock 'em out, tie 'em down?" You ask your fellow intern, already reaching for your whip and ready to pounce, regardless of his answer.

>"From a vantage point and under cover of darkness…" He muses, taking one of his hands off the wall and taking something from his own utility belt, a small weight on a string, readin 100g "To fail would be a shameful display."

"Are ya helpin' me or not!?" You… Well, screech. You can't help it, you are worried and on a short timer.

>"I'm going to get raked over the coals for this, but yes. <Let's a go>?" He says, his voice full of determination. "...That's English, right?"

You can't afford to be stunned now, so you just wave your hands in what you hope he understands as more or less, then take to your phone, to let Tin know.

WE'RE COMING, START SHOOTING WHEN WE DO. You quickly tap in, your fingers a blur.

"Didn't think you'd be in, Trix." You say as you look down, planning for what you must do.

>"I've been told I play it safe too much, that I need to be more proactive." He says, rolling the weight over his knuckles. "Perhaps following someone that acts first will help, especially when things are so lopsided in our favor."

That only leaves you to choose what exactly to do.

Her shoulders and stance are telegraphing a clear swing at Tin's neck, not the best hit, but she might want it to look cool. The guy just looks impatient to leave…

But if the girl's quirk is making stuff liquid, it stands to reason his is the one that rots things...

Hey guys, since this amount of damage probably won’t knock her out, I reccomend next turn we do the same thing (quirk+whip attacks) but we attempt to make three attacks. It’s a bit more damage usually, and I’m pretty sure we’ll be able to split it between the bad guys. It’ll be 7d10 still, just without any reliable.
>>
>>3884178
We have to get 3 pairs in that roll to succeed though?
>>
>>3884205
Well, this guy managed it >>3883659

And even if you attempt three attacks and only get two sets, you still land two attacks, which is 6 damage.
>>
>>3884178
err, this is about 4 damage to the head, I don't know how many stats you have to lose for a ko, but unless she's particularly smart or talkative she isn't going to walk this off
>>
>>3884273
5 damage, and you gotta reduce three areas to 0, or do something un-heroic to one area.

Unless her brains, face, and hands or guts add up to five or less, she won’t be going down. Might surrender, but it’s never that easy, is it? Most likely she’s out of brains dice but still needs another solid hit or two to go down. Not sure whether it’s safe to go for the face, but I’m sure we’ll be able to use context cues.

But you’re right that we’re gonna think circles around her next round. There’s no way she was at 6 brains, and I doubt she has DR there either.
>>
>>3884288

Some thoughts:
While she def doesn’t have 6 Brains, she may have DR in some form. If it be “lizard skin” from being a mutant or if her quirk works on contact automatically whether she initiates or not.

My suggestions (as it usually will be) is use a motherfucker to beat another motherfucker. Next whip strike is a wrap of some kind and throw the presumably staggering woman at the man. This will allow team-grows-alot to continue their advantage into new rounds, approach into close quarters to finish it and/or deal with the effects of Tin missing.
