he Lighthouse War is over, but conflict still continues.

With Erusea's defeat at the hands of the Osean Federation and the International United Nations, the imperial nation has splintered into a confusing mess of separatists, freedom fighters, warlords, rogue military factions, and those seeking to profit from the chaos. Worse, Erusea's many automated drone factories still remain intact, waiting for new masters to come to claim them.

The Usean continent remains in crisis, and it's up to a new generation of pilots to face this next generation threat...

You are MILLY, the "Red Tail", a Belkan Air Force pilot fighting for the IUN!

While you weren't expecting a big celebration or welcome party when you got back from your mission, it was still a bit unsettling landing at Shilage Castle at night. This wasn't a secure and fortified airbase nestled well behind enemy lines. It was a castle sitting in still very hotly contested territory, still within arms reach of Erusea's military might. Or at least, what was left of it, anyways.

The castle was still shrouded in complete darkness to make it harder for observers to direct night time artillery and bomb attacks. Unfortunately, that made it a lot harder to land, as well. They only kept a bare minimum of lights on the runway, just enough to get a rough idea of where it was. The rest you had to rely on your own eyes and night vision.

Thankfully, both you and Misono touch down with no serious issues. Your planes are then quickly ushered into the safety of the makeshift hangars from the repurposed underground chambers carved into the mountain beneath Shilage Castle.

"Excellent job." Wit's number two, Seymour compliments as you exit your borrowed F-16. "Farmers in the outlying areas have corroborated your kills.

"Yeah, those bombers won't be a problem any more." You grin.

"And we will honor our deal." Seymour continues. "The remains of the Wyvern are being loaded on one of the outbound cargo planes as we speak."

"Sweet!" You beam. "Where is it at?"

"Just down in that hangar over there." Seymour points down the underground tunnel. "You can't miss it."

"C'mon, Mis!' You grin as you dash off down the tunnel, completely forgetting any fatigue you may be feeling.

"Wait up!" Misono pants as she follows right behind you.

And that's when you see it. The much vaunted X-02S Wyvern.

Well, in truth, you weren't sure what you were expecting. The Wyvern, or what was left of it, was practically in pieces. Only the front half of the fuselage was in any way intact, the engines completely burnt out and gone while the wings were snapped off, having been stacked separately to the side. Much of the original paint job was burned off from fire damage, leaving it only a scorched wreck.

In the cockpit, the canopy was gone from an obvious ejection. However, you notice an odd, mechanical dome in the rear seat...

"Hmmm, it looks like Mead will have her work cut out for her." Misono frowns as she observes the wrecked Wyvern. "I know she likes to boast she can make anything fly, but for a plane in this state...?"

However, you don't immediately reply to Misono, being drawn towards that dome. You clamber up the side and reach your hand out to it...

Suddenly, you see the lights in the dome flicker for just a brief second as you touch it. Was it still operational, somehow?

"Nah, it's nothing!" You assure her, dropping down from the fuselage. You weren't going to have an opportunity to get a closer look with her around. "I was just curious what that thing was."

"Hmmmm, if I'm not mistaken, that looks like an AI core." Misono narrows her eyes. "I've heard that some R&D companies are putting them into planes to act as assistants to pilots."

"I thought AI was illegal?" You blink.

"Well, technically yes." Misono shrugs. "However, strategic AIs, AIs designed to assist humans, are still allowed as long as they aren't being used to autonomously operate military equipment."

Huh. Mihaly didn't strike you as the type of guy to resort to using AI to help him. Then again, maybe he needed something to help him deal with his old age.

"Either way, it looks like it's been totally fried in the crash." Misono continues. "I doubt it would be much use at this point."

"Yeah... probably." You nod.l

"Anyways, I'm going to get some rest." Misono yawns. "The cargo plane will leave first thing the morning, and we'll escort it out. Bandit and Vicky will remain on standby."

"Night, Mis." You wave to her as she takes her leave.

Unfortunately, you don't seem to recognize any sort of direct response from the AI, which was a bit disheartening. Were you just imagining things before?

However, at that moment, the section at the base of the dome spits out what looks to be a portable hard drive. You suppose this was the only way the AI could communicate with you?

Well, you really didn't have anything else to do but pocket the hard drive, slipping it quietly into your flight suit. You weren't going to be able to really inspect this thing until you got back to base, where you could get access to a proper computer.

With the AI hard drive securely in your pocket, you wonder what to do next.

Well, at at this point, there wasn't really any reason to keep mucking around. You let out a big yawn and shuffle over to the temporary quarters the Shilagans had set up for the aircrews. You were leaving first thing in the morning so you were going to need to squeeze in as much rest as possible.

---

"Rise and shine, Milly!" Vicky says cheerfully as she prods you. "The special cargo is being loaded right now and will be leaving soon! We gotta get ready to take off!"

"Nnnnnngh." You groan, sitting up from your cot and rubbing the sleep out of your eyes.

"I know you had an exciting night, but this is not time to be sleeping in!" Vicky tuts.

Jeez, it seems like she's really picked up a bit more confidence while you were gone.

"Right, right." You sigh as Vicky hands you a couple of granola bars. "What the heck is this for?"

"It's uh, breakfast, unfortunately." Vicky sighs. "Everyone's rationing here so proper food is a bit out of the question at the moment."

"Yeah, that makes sense." You nod as you set the breakfast bars aside. "Anything else happen?"

"Bandit and Misono are getting our F-16s prepped and ready to go." Vicky explains, and then pauses before speaking again. "So you actually saw the Wyvern?"

"Yeah, last night." You nod.

"And... what was it like?" Vicky leans in closer, almost uncomfortably close. You get the feeling that she had a deep amount of interest on the subject.

"Well, it was in a bunch of pieces." You shrug. "Mead's gonna have her work cut out for her."

"Hm?" You raise an eyebrow, piqued at Vicky's odd behavior.

"Misono said you stuck around the Wyvern's wreckage last night." Vicky explains. "Did you find anything special or something?"

Honestly, you weren't sure if Vicky was psychic or just had a habit of stumbling into sensitive topics. You were pretty sure you could trust her, after all the two of you had been though. Well anyways, it was time to get the hell out of here! You quickly get dressed and cleaned up, or at least as best you could in such a makeshift setup while Vicky heads off to make sure the planes are ready. Nibbling on one of the breakfast bars, you make your way to the hangar, where your borrowed F-16s are all ready and waiting to go. Bandit, Misono, and Vicky were all present.

"Just in time." Bandit nods at your arrival."Our birds are largely ready to go. However, thanks to your efforts last night, the Shilageans are willing to give us some special weapons for our extraction."

"It's a mix of anti air and anti surface weaponry." Misono explains. "There's a high chance that the Eruseans may use aircraft or mobile anti-aircraft systems to try and intercept inbound and outbound flight traffic, which includes us."

"So what do we have?" You ask, glancing at the stored munitions.

"Well, in addition to the standard missiles, we can either take 4AAMs, which allows you to fire four missiles at once." Vicky remarks. "Or Short Range Aerial Suppression Missiles, which are proximity fuzed and explode like flak shells. Four ground targets, we have Guided Bombs."

Hm, well, both 4AAMs and SASMs were both good options against massed numbers of aerial targets. 4AAMs were good against targets that were spread out, while SASMs were better against tightly clumped targets, which drones tended to do.

Though if the Eruseans were also going to be using road mobile elements, Guided Bombs would be useful against them, too.

You decide to load up SASMs. The nice thing about these missiles is that you didn't necessarily need to get a direct hit to inflict damage on enemy planes, even if said damage wouldn't be immediately lethal.

Finally, you're informed that the cargo plane carrying your Wyvern wreckage was ready to take off. You and the rest of your squadron board your loaned F-16s. You would escort the cargo plane until you crossed the Shilage border, where you would link up with the Gullinbursti again to get your regular planes back.

A simple enough plan. Hopefully it would stay simple.

As you and your squadron takes off, you radio immediately buzzes.

"Just a heads up, but we're detecting increased activity from the Erusean lines." Wit warns. "Sol Squadron will do its best to keep them away from the air corridor, but keep an eye out, regardless."

"Roger that." Bandit responds. "All right, let's do this by the book. Let's get a flight pair to scout ahead and try to draw out any potential threats."

"All right, me and Knives will move on ahead." Bandit decides. "Red, Swordfish, you stick with the cargo plane."

"Got it." You affirm.

As Bandit and Misono fly on ahead, you and Vicky take up positions alongside the cargo plane. In the distance, you can see signs of dogfighting as Sol Squadron interdicts Erusean attempts to intercept you.

However, despite the obvious skill gap between Sol Squadron and standard Erusean squadrons, the Eruseans still had numbers going for them. Some Erusean planes were able to bypass them and were making a beeline towards your formation.

At the same time, tracers and missiles trails begin lancing up from the trees up ahead, indicating that Bandit and Misono had triggered hidden ground batteries. Essentially, you were getting pressed from two fronts.

"They're coming right at us!" Vicky wails as the the Erusean contacts begin steadily closing on your position.

"Of course they are, Swordfish." You grin. Looks like were going to have a bit of fun before leaving...

Despite your enthusiasm, you knew that things could get pretty dicey. It looked like the Erusians had no intention of letting you get away, as was evidenced by the type of planes they were sending after you. It was a force of eight planes, being mix of F-15s and MiG-31s, planes that were fast enough to run down their targets and engage them from long range. It was going to be a real hassle to deal with them in daylight conditions like this.

However, the interceptors were still quite a distance away, just only now breaking past Sol Squadron's line. That should give you and Vicky a few minutes to help Bandit and Misono blast some of those AA vehicles. Having them join in on the battle would certainly help narrow the numerical advantage they had.

However, with their long range missiles, especially the ones MiG-31s usually packed, them taking long distance potshots at the cargo plane were a distinct possibility...

You angle in towards the interceptors. With you and Vicky in their path, they couldn't just fly past or shoot past you. But, well, you'd be outnumbered 8 to 2.

Still good odds, in your estimation.

"W-wait, we're going to attack them head on!?" Vicky wails.

"It's worked for us so far!" You laugh. "And we can't very well leave them alone, you know. We're supposed to be protecting the cargo!'

"I-I get it!" Vicky groans. "But that doesn't mean I have to like it!"

You keep your focus on the approaching enemies. Four F-15s and four MiG-31s. The MiG-31s were much faster than the F-15s, but were far clumsier, as they weren't designed to handle knife fights. They'd be extremely vulnerable to your F-16 if you could get close.

However, that meant having to ignore the F-15s, which while not as nimble as your F-16, were far better suited to dogfighting than the MiG-31s. They could easily get in behind you if you weren't careful.

"Let's take out those MIG-31s first!" You bark to Vicky. "They have long range missiles! We can't let them take potshots at the cargo!"

"Got it!" Vicky says as her F-16 forms up on yours.

By this point, the Erusean planes have noticed your approach. The MiG-31s break off at an angle, obviously aware of their weakness in close combat and attempting to keep you at arm's reach while the F-15s continue to beeline towards the two of you.

You'd only have one shot at the MiG-31s before the F-15s were on top of you. Bank hard to keep your nose pointed at the MiG-31s as they try to speed past you.

Both and Vicky and fire off a burst of cannon rounds at the MiG-31s. You see your tracers intersect with the closest MiG-31, tearing holes into its right wing and fuselage. Smoke and oil begin spurting from the breaches and the wounded plane banks away yet again, disengaging from the pursuit. He wasn't down, but he was in no position to threaten the cargo plane for a while.

Vicky's burst tears into the wing root of a second MiG-31. With the speed the plane is going, the wing tears itself off from the sheer force of air pressure, causing the plane to fall into an uncontrollable roll.

That left two MiG-31s left, but the F-15s were starting to close in on your tails.

Right now, your priority was dealing with these damn F-15s coming up on your tail.

They were getting pretty damn close, and you figure the only reason why they weren't firing missiles just yet was due to the risk of hitting their MiG-31 allies. However, that wasn't going to protect you forever.

You could do a defensive split with Vicky, forcing the F-15s to separate and giving you and Vicky a chance to pick off each others' pursuers. Alternatively, you could try to a hard loop to get behind the F-15s, or try to lure them into a scissors maneuver to force them to bleed off energy, which F-15s weren't good at keeping at low speeds.

"Swordfish! Break!" You bark as you jerk your stick to the left.

Vicky doesn't reply, but you glimpse her banking hard to the right as you give her the break order.

As you pull away, a quick glance of your radar shows the F-15s also peeling off from each other, pursuing you and Vicky in pairs.

That was the easy part. Now it was time for the hard part, coordinating with Vicky to get a line of fire on your pursuers.

Crap! You needed to get that F-15 off of Vicky's tail, or else she wouldn't be able to pressure those remaining MiG-31s!

You were still close enough to try for guns, but you'd have to keep your nose trained on the F-15, leaving your back dangerously open to the second one. Alternatively, you could fire off regular missiles or your SASMs and break off, letting the missiles do the rest of the work. The missiles were a sure knockout if they hit, while the SASMs would score some guaranteed damage, even if they didn't guarantee a clean kill. Hopefully it would be enough to get Vicky's pursuer to give up the chase.

Vicky's pursuer seems to realize that missiles have been launched and he makes a sharp, downwards spiraling turn to shake them off. He's fast enough on the dodge that your SASMs don't even trigger as they fly off into the distance.

Even she wanted to, Vicky couldn't turn around to assist you, as doing so would slow her down and cause the very real risk of running into the SASMs you fired. She has no choice but to keep moving forward and chase those MiG-31s, leaving you to tangle with the two F-15s alone.

This was going to be a problem. You were outnumbered 2-1. You've still got one F-15 hanging on to your tail and there's a second one that could perform high speed attacks on you while you were occupied.

This was not a good situation.

Fortunately, your pursuer is too slow to react properly to your hard loop, which flattens you against your seat, making it feel like you were about to crush yourself.

However, you were able to pull it off, getting a bead on your pursuer's tail. Instinct takes over and you pull the trigger on your stick, releasing yet another long burst of cannon fire.

Shells riddle the fuselage of the F-15 right before it violently explodes, sending flaming debris scattering to the ground below. You immediately snap your head around to get eyes back on the final F-15, but you don't see anything.

That's when you notice your radar picking up Bandit and Misono arriving, having finally cleared out all of the AA threats. The final F-15 was fleeing the airspace, having seen tide of battle turning against it. Likewise, the final two MiG-31s make their escape, accelerating away from Vicky at top speed to leave the area.

Well, you decide not to give chase to the fleeing Erusean planes. You've largely accomplished your mission, which was to provide protection to the cargo plane carrying the Wyvern wreck.

"Red, what's your status?" Bandit asks, as calm and to the point as ever. Seems he wasn't worried about your ability to handle this.

"All green, Boss." You reply cheerfully. "Just chased away a few uninvited guests."

"You've done an admirable job as always!" Misono compliments.

"Aaaaah, it was so stressful!" Vicky groans as her F-16 rejoins the formation. "Those MiG-31s are just way too fast! I actually feel kind of queasy..."

"You can check into the infirmary when we rendezvous with the Gullinbursti." Bandit remarks. "Good job, everyone. Now let's get out of here for the Eruseans send another wave out."

And with that, your squadron reforms and continues on towards the Shilage border, catching up with the cargo plane.

All the while, you glance at the AI hard drive still stowed in your flight suit pocket. You didn't trust keeping it anywhere else out of your sight.

There was a lot to do once you got back to base....

>And that's it for tonight! As always, next thread is on Friday, so don't miss it!

See you next week, boss.

Reminder to get Ellisa some real friends rather than a robot.

Come on, she totally has friends her age. It's not like she's traveling from place to place a lot, or having interests that most kids her age wouldn't share.

i'm very proud of us. We managed to complete our iffy mission without racking up a graveyard of Erusean body counts.
Am a little sad that we didnt get to duel that one pilot via sky joust tho.
