“A Knight is Sworn to Valour. His Heart Knows Only Virtue. His Blade Defends the Helpless. His Might Upholds the Weak. His Word Speaks Only Truth. His Wrath Undoes the Wicked.”

Every child in Cantôn knows of the Knight’s Code. From peasant-born waifs playing with sticks in the mud to keen-eyed noble sons practicing with cold steel in the training yard, all have at the very least dreamed of one day becoming a knight themselves. To ride out on errantry into the Five Duchies Kingdom and beyond for God and Glory, bringing the Law of Adam to the wicked and the Blade of Cain to the beast.

The Knights of Cantôn are sworn to follow the Code, to obey the King, to refuse no call for aid honestly asked for, to seek out and destroy the Foe wherever it may lurk and rid the world of evil.

Were it so easy…

What’s with all the Kniggas?
>>
Sandag, 24th Day of Ovrimun, 883 A.C.E – Fallavon Forest Ruins, Midday

As the cry ”LIBERTY HOUR” erupts in the woodlands surrounding the southern ruin entrance your thoughts are drawn back to Sam Wyte’s words to his gathered motely band, even as your body moves to the attack.

”I could talk to you today about who we’re fighting and why. Foreign mercenaries, bought and paid for with the ill-gotten gold of the nobility for their own selfish, senseless wars. Slavers, the men that chain men not just with law and threats but shackles and whip. True points all, reason enough for us act. But our fight is older than that. Our fight is more than that.” Sam Wyte looks around at each and every one the scores of gathered Bluejays. Barely a day in his company and you can tell he knows the name of each and every man under his command, from runaway farmhand to son of a leatherworker. ”Since the first peasant serf watched his liege grow fat in the warm castle halls while his own sons starved in the cold and thought ‘This is not just’. Since the first wretched slave met his masters eyes and said ‘No More’. Since the first savage man in fur and loincloth was commanded to his knees and laughed ‘Never’. Liberty against Oppression. Justice against Tyranny.
You remember thinking at the time, amid the cheers of the various rebels of the realm, that the outlaw brigand Sam Wyte was something of an orator. You recall Father having one such rabblerouser burnt at the stake for preaching heresy in the Andryski hamlet. ‘Honeyed words and grand promises of easy salvation can lead even the most pious commonfolk astray’, he had said. Still there is something admirably charimastic in the way Sam Wyte gives his speech, even if the message behind it is nonsense. Setting aside the kidnapping, thefts and brigandry typical of their sort, one could almost believe this was a band of brothers. A poor man’s version of a Knights Order, if you will.

”That is the fight we carry. We may never live to see it won. Each of us may see the Hangman’s Smile long before our glorious revolutions spreads from shore to shore of our homeland. But it is in the hard times that the summer comrade and sunshine revolutionary, men of words and not action, will shrink from the cause and shy away from the hardship demanded. He that stands tall now, with all the world and its tyrants stacked against us, deserves the love and thanks of all lowborn men and women.”

Odd, that the old rebel’s words would stick with you even as you charge the Langlish lines with his minions. As they say, even the affiliation of traitors leads one to doubt their own loyalties. Like a disease or cancerous blemish, their ideas might spread and take root.

You banish these thoughts with a shake of your helm. You have men to lead, and a battle to win.

Bluejays, reputedly the finest shots in the known world for all their other failings. Against them, men of one of the famed Langlish Freeblade Companies known for their professional discipline and exorbitant rates. Rebels and foreign mercenaries, and you can’t even say for sure that you are on the right side.

”Shields up! Shields up!” Your bellowing voice commands the centre of the main Bluejay push into the Langlish position. No identifying marks or proud family heraldry is displayed on your plain shield, but Almighty-willing it will serve its purpose. A mistimed charged across the open ground could falter under enemy fire if the formation is strung out. Better to advance under the heaviest protection possible, and give your own archers a chance to thin their ranks while the crossbowmen fail to thin yours.

Nonetheless, your cautious advance has given the Langlish plenty of time to set up a bracing palisade of halberds on the main approach path of your formation. Their plate armour stands proof against the flitting arrows raining in on their cohort from the woodlands, but against such a withering volley from some of the most infamous marksmen on the continent even plate armour cannot endure forever. Gaps are found, joints punctured, screams elicited from the pulsing throng of foreign mercenaries as their own crossbowmen take their positions and return fire.

Ill-equipped to enter into an exchange of arrows with the camouflaged Bluejays in the woods, the bulk the Langlish crossbow fire is instead turned to your vanguard. You pray that your shield and armour holds…

Compared to the gleaming armour and shining steel of the Langlish formation that moves with practiced clockwork, your band of rebel assaulters armed with spear, hatchet and light armour must seem a sorry rabble. You would not have fancied your odds if these well-armed mercenaries hadn’t had a substantial portion of their number recalled upon the attack. Even as it is, they need only bloody your side’s nose and repel the initial assault to even the odds. The longer this combat goes on, the more momentum you lose, and the more armour and endurance will matter over speed and agility.

You are correct that crossbows take longer to load than bows. For ranged shots I assume that 1 roll can account for either numerous rapid volley shots or a single well-placed shaft. ”Brace! Brace! He whistles with raised eyebrows at the near miss and dons his plumed helmet when your formation finally closes the distance and crashes into the halberd line. “Men of Langland, stop your dreaming…”

Can’t you see their spearpoints gleaming?
See their warrior pennants streaming,
To this battlefield!

Men of Langland stand ye steady,
It cannot be ever said ye,
For the battle were not ready,
Langlish never yield!

Men of Langland on to glory,
This will ever be your story!
Keep these burning words before ye,
Langlish never yield!

The halberd. A commoner’s sort of weapon, though one rarely seen in Cantôn outside of the more well equipped militias and levies. A peasant’s weapon and unworthy of a knight yes, but the men behind the hafts of these ones seem like they know how to use them. No peasant would be allowed to wear such ostentatious garb and livery like these peacocking Langlish foreigners, but their garish colours belie an impressive discipline that manages to absorb the worst of your surprise assault even as their formation still forms. The wicked bristling points of their formation resembles an armoured hedgehog, and the prospect of assaulting that is worrying enough to distract from their damnable singing…

>Sir Emile Andrei is Battered!

>-1 Battle Progress [5]
>Gained Bluejay Battle Buddy!

The press is madness, packed so tightly in you can barely bring your arming sword up in a thrust let alone make space for a swing. There’s no room to manoeuvre, no possibility of brining you superior swordsmanship to bear in a heaving press of armoured bodies. You see your brother chest to chest with a snarling Langlish merc, they clutch at each other ungainly like lovers in their first awkward embrace. It’s little different for yourself. Your own foreign opponent, catching your thrust on his halberd haft, twists and trips you by pure accident. His grin underneath the sallet helm is almost apologetic, as if he had bumped into you on the street and meant to beg your pardon. You laugh aloud at the bizarreness of it, and the man’s apologetic smile turns into a worried frown at this mad laughing knight.

By sheer fluke a crossbow bolt flicks into your vision and the halberdier uses that moment to swing his polearm down into a solid blow where your neck meets the shoulder. The warmth of blood spilling in your armour lets you know the skin has been broken, but it can’t be deep. If it was, you’d most certainly be dead. Nonetheless, Lady Sinclair’s favour will probably be somewhat marred. The Langlish mercenary gives you another sheepish grin and you shrug as if to acknowledge the touch.

>>3925373
which quest is dat from
?
>>
>>3925393

[2/2]

A Bluejay spearman yelps as he stumbles back into you from the swing of a halberd. You catch him and prevent both you slipping in the muck, a lethal misstep if there ever was one here. The battle seems to hang on a knifes edge, the Langlish lines could give or the Bluejay assault could falter at any moment now.

It is impossible to fight gracefully in this madness, impossible to think, impossible to breath. How can men stand it? This isn’t fighting, this is just a chaotic mass of bodies where your survival depends entirely on luck rather than skill. A slip, a misstep in melee, and before you know it you’re scrambling for your sword in the dirt as three Langlish mercenaries wail on you with full-bodied blows from their halberds. You cower half crouched as your shield begins to disintegrate, it’s all you can do just to avoid the worst of their strikes.

Something gives in your chest as another hammerblow from a halberd slams into your unguarded side. A rib, definitely a rib. Broken. It hurts, but you can still breathe. You’re not coughing up blood yet so, according to your old master-at-arms, your lung is at least intact. No reason to quit now, you can do this all day.

Almighty knows what caused the sudden press to change direction but in a few moments the Langlish halberdiers are pushed back and your vision is filled with more Bluejay rebels forging ahead and disrupting the mercenary formation. You hiss in pain as you rise to your feet once more and join the fray.

---------------------------------------------------------

(1) Combat Stance: You are not facing a Blademaster, you may dictate the combat stance at your discretion.

The grinning Langlish mercenary from before has lost any semblance of humour, now snarling viciously and limping on a wound from Almighty knows where as he attempts to cave in your head with his halberd repeatedly.
”Just die already you big stubborn moth-urk! The swing of your shield catches him full in the throat, you can feel his windpipe crunch under your blow as he is flung to the ground.

A second halberd . You bring your shield down on the arm holding it savagely. Once, twice, thrice. The halberdiers arm is a mangled mess by the time you are done, but you show no hesitation in tackling him to the ground and caving in his helm with your shield. The Almighty gifted you with a brawny and muscular build, in times like these you are more than happy to use it.

As you stand up from your latest kill a crossbow bolt flies thuds into your armour with a wet *Thunk*. At this range, your armour stands no chance of stopping the projectile. The pain is sudden and intense, the bolt has sunk in deeply into your left arm above the shield. At a glance you can’t tell how bad the damage is through the torn fabric and maille but it’s going to need attention. Later.

The shooter responsible frowns at your failure to expire and begins methodically reloading the weapon as the handful of halberdiers form a thin screen between you. Given the sudden shift in the battle, it’s not a task these mercenaries are too enthusiastic about.

You’re hurt. You’re angry. And you’re armed.

For the purpose of this Combat Round, all Damage against the Crossbowmen is doubled and the Langlish receive no bonus from their Schiltron Formation. Even if you kill (or bring Personal Combat DC to 100) the effects on the battle progress will be delayed for one turn (so two combat rounds from now).

>>3925964
To be fair, a big portion of it was that absolute shit roll at the beginning which was partly our fault as well for trying to tank armor piercing weapons instead of charging through, followed by worse rolls.

But I think it's perfectly fine for Emile to develop a love/hate relationship with crossbows, depending on if their on his side or not.

”That hurt.” You allow your temper to rise as you press forward through the thinning ranks with the intention of putting an end to the ranged mercenaries once and for all.
A strikingly swarthy fellow with a bristling mutton chops beard steps in between you and your Crossbowman quarry. He brandishes his halberd and yells over his shoulder. ”Lugi, Roberto get back to Russo’s second line! I’ll hold them off!”

”Marco!”

”Idiota! Go!” The wounded Arbalest hesitates, but his comrade drags him back behind the press of Halberds to where a semblance of a last stand is being formed at the lip of the ridge under the watchful eyes of the chiselled Langlish Lieutenant.

The halberd swings down savagely where your head was a moment before, the piked end twirling on the backswing. Lacking other options, your gauntlet reaches out before your face and catches it, the point sticking in between your fingers. An inch left and it would have gone through your palm. Your opponent seems shocked, unaware that your feat was more due to sheer luck than supreme skill. With a sweep of your leg the tanned Langlishman finds himself sprawled on his back, blinking in surprise.

”Ah merda.” The man sighs resignedly as you tower over him, shield in hand. He’s accepted his fate, the sacrifice is real. You almost wish you could hold back a moment, to hesitate and let him go.

But the battlefield is no place for hesitation. Nor mercy. Your armoured boot stomp shatters his jaw, the pained fury in his expression is almost instantly demolished by the curved end of your heater shield crushing his nose with the first blow. His eyeball pops with the second. His face, skull and then brains are pulverized with the subsequent blows until nothing is left but a mash of bone, blood and slick matter that spills into the dirt. The ruinous calamity of the man’s face is starkly at odds with the pristine condition of his body armour.

how do we pick up a sword? Especially since the line here collapsed, cant we grab a longknife before we move up?
>>
>>3925978
Okay but really that's a spider-tank idea.

BTW are we gonna tap out of the fight here? We're pretty messed up, and we've helped out a lot already.

Besides, these guys are mercs. We can maybe get them to surrender. Unlikely their employer would let them live anyways, given the whole "No witnesses" mission aspect and the fact that killing off Mercs is a lot cheaper than paying them. Especially when their forces have been weakened so much.

Not like they could use this job for reputation either, no one is going to sing songs of their deeds this day.

It's a one time offer to lay down their weapons and keep their lives, as is only Chivalrous to do. We can even let them keep their armour and such so as to not impoverish them.
>>
>>3925996
Yeah I'd like to grab out own sword again if we can find it in all the chaos. We can't realistically keep fighting unarmed

Not easy to give a man a quick death when you’re using just a shield, that much is self evident.

”What now, sire?” Sir Neil dan Marc appears at your side, his right arm slick with blood to the armpit. ”The ridge? Or we can let these rebel scum mop up the rest.”

”Those fellows there look like a tough nut to crack.” Your brother muses, his blade also bloody. Someone must had walloped his solidly enough on the helm to leave a dent, but he appears well enough. ”But if we give them room to breathe, they could make this costly in lives before they break.”

You follow his gaze to where the Langlish officer and a core group of veterans are trying to rally the defence. They each wield a longsword of some description and a shorter blade, almost a dagger. It’s a bizarre fighting technique that you’ve never seen before, but any Bluejay willing to try his luck against them is cut to pieces in moments. For now the rebels seems content to pick off the stragglers and bring their own archers to bear

Have a quick heal then join the fray. Our companions should participate regardless since they're just battered. If they yield tell them to throw their weapons and leave the fort running. Have some men keep an eye on their weapons in case they decide to come back for some reason

> GAIN Halberd. +10AV, -5AV to Foe. (Can only be used effectively with a Buckler. Your Heater shield's effectiveness is halved).

There is a short lull in the fighting, a breath of peace as the last stragglers of the broken Langlish formation rally at the mouth of the ruins passageway behind the resolute Langlish veteran swordsman and their muscular officer. The rebels, for their part, are preparing for another push to drive the foreign mercenaries out entirely. The nearest moustachioed swordsman says something to their officer you can’t quite hear, pointing in your direction. The officer spots you and laughs richly, his booming voice the envy of drill sergeants across the realm.

No, lascialo. Lui è mio. I have to hand it to you, Mainlander. You are a…tenacious one yes?” The great hulking swordsman’s Cantôn is much more heavily accented than his captain’s, but you understand him well enough. Despite being on the losing side his eyes are eager animated under the brow of his plumed helm. ”My name is Giuseppe Russo, Primus Pilus of the Golden Sun Company. I tell you my name because I do not want your ghost thinking who kill you? Molto bene, let us begin.”

The Primus Russo twirls his shortblade as he widens his stance at the lip of the ridge. You cannot tell whether it’s bravado, madness or true courage that plasters that fierce grin across his face against such odds. But you know that when this lull in battle ends he will be looking for you.

(1) The Langlish Officer
>”May the best man win, Islander. Charge!” Your side must press the advantage now, while they are still regrouping. Hopefully this garishly dressed musclehead proves to be a worthy challenge. [Haughty]

>”How about we settle this man to man, and let the One True God decide who holds the field?” A knight of Cantôn would recognise the challenge, and be honorbound to accept. Who knows with these foreigners… [Hearty]

>”Would that I could adhere to good manners and introduce myself. But neither of us need die today, Langlishman. Take your men and go.” You risk squandering some of the advantage you’ve gleaned so far by giving them time to regroup, but the offer must be made. [Idealist]

”Milord.” You glance over your shoulder to see Mikail offering you your lost blade hilt first. He looks none the worse for wear after the melee, eagerly discharging his duties as a good squire should.

”Excellent work, squire.” The boy beams under your praise as you heft the blade and point it at the Langlish officer. ”May the best man win, Islander. Charge!”

Leaving no time for the Freeblade mercenaries to properly reform their lines, your companions and the light armoured Bluejays swarm the Langlish position with an unintelligible war cry.

>The tide of battle is now Overwhelming Force (70DC)

Chivalry is lost on the blades-for-hire, as the Langlish officer signals for his arbalests to open fire on you at point blank range. Your brother catches a crossbow bolt meant for you on the rim of his shield, shoving aside one of the Freeblade sergeants to clear the way for you to confront their leader.

The foreigner growls as his chest-plate and thigh is pierced by expert shots from the woodlands. His ostentatious uniform and plumed hell mark him out as a man of import, and a prime target for snipers. A less sensible man might have allowed him to recover before exchanging blows

You catch his weak longblade swing on your shield, a feint. But one you had anticipated. Ignoring the second casual swipe of the longblade, your sword swings down savagely on the officer’s hand wrapped around their short steel. It near splits in half from the middle finger down, causing your opponent to snarl in pain, his happy-go-lucky bravado replaced with a murderous intent to see you dead.

The Langlish swordsman has the advantage here. QM rolling to see what stance he benefits from.

1 = Cautious - Double AV (Max 80), Total unsaved damage to Foe is halved (Rounding up)
2 = Guarded - Exchange of Blows does not inflict or sustain damage.
3 = Balanced - AV and Damage remain unchanged. May Re-Roll Combat Stance control next round.
4 = Belligerent - Exchange of Blows does not inflict damage; +1 Damage to Foe if any unsaved damaged is inflicted.
5 = Audacious - Halve AV (Rounding up); Each point of unsaved damage to Foe is doubled
>>
>>3927605
Oh NOOOO
>>
>>3927605
means 1 success means no damge as exchange of blows dose not work with belligerent
>>
>>3927605
>>3927606
Actually isn't this OK on paper? Get 1 or more success and we win barring AV saves
>>
>>3927609
If you get one success, you will still inflict damage. He won't.
