The Lighthouse War is over, but conflict still continues.

With Erusea's defeat at the hands of the Osean Federation and the International United Nations, the imperial nation has splintered into a confusing mess of separatists, freedom fighters, warlords, rogue military factions, and those seeking to profit from the chaos. Worse, Erusea's many automated drone factories still remain intact, waiting for new masters to come to claim them.

The Usean continent remains in crisis, and it's up to a new generation of pilots to face this next generation threat...

You are MILLY, the "Red Tail", a Belkan Air Force pilot fighting for the IUN!

You take your leave from the bar. By now, it was getting pretty late in the day and the sun would be going down soon. You figure it was a good time to go talk to Vicky about the AI before you get called out to a mission tomorrow or something and miss the opportunity.

It was easy enough to find Vicky. She was at her quarters, tinkering with a laptop, the device spread out across her bed in several pieces.

"Oh, hey, Milly!" Vicky smiles as she sets down a motherboard.

"Pretty busy, I see." You raise an eyebrow at the disassembled computer.

"Well, I was trying to cook up a device that could run the AI program." Vicky explains. "But a regular civilian model isn't going to cut it. You need a dev or military spec device to properly run one!"

"So you're... trying to build your own?" You blink.

"Well, people ask questions if you try to requisition powerful equipment like that!' Vicky points out. "So I've been trying to soup up what I have on hand!"

Well, it was certainly something...

Honestly, you a bit amazed that Vicky was so savvy with tech, until you remembered that her parents were engineers. Maybe that should have been more expected. Still, you hadn't seen this side of Vicky before.

"Yeah, sounds like the best shot we have." You nod. "We don't want people asking too many questions."

"Exactly!" Vicky nods. "Um, can you hand me that screwdriver, there?"

Vicky points to the specified tool, which was sitting on her desk just out of reach of her relatively short arms.

"Sure thing." You nod as you grab the screwdriver and hand it to her. "So, you've been doing this sort of thing a lot?"

"My dad taught me how to build my own computer since I was seven!" Vicky gives a rare, confident grin. "I've been doing it as a hobby ever since! Trying to make a portable system capable of supporting an AI program is definitely an exciting challenge for me!"

"Um not sure about that." You frown.

Fortunately, you manage to keep up with Vicky's instructions, helping her assemble the custom laptop without too much fuss or screwup. Honestly, you were impressed that Vicky could do all of this on her own, while directing a relative layman like you at the same time. This was something she was apparently very comfortable with.

Unlike flying. She was always a nervous wreck during and after any given mission.

Honestly, from everything she's said and shown about herself, she'd make an excellent engineer. While you were one of the last people who would question her skill behind a pilot's stick, it did make you wonder why she'd put up with something so obviously stressful for her.

"You know, Vicky." You say, setting down the tools you borrowed from her back on her desk. "Seeing all this, you'd make a pretty good engineer, yet here you are, putting your neck on the line as a pilot. And from a neutral pacifist country, too! What's up with that?"

"Ah, well..." Vicky's cheeks redden as she returns to her nervous state. "I-It's kind of embarrassing, really..."

"It's just the two of us here." You point out, giving Vicky an encouraging pat on her shoulder. "No else is gonna know if you tell me now!"

"I guess you can say I was... bored." Vicky sighs. "Don't get me wrong, Nordenvannic is a wonderful country. It's safe and clean Crime is almost nonexistent and the economy is healthy. But living there was just so... dull! At least for me, it just seemed like it was the same thing every day. No change, no danger, nothing!"

Vicky pauses after realizing she's gone on a bit of a rant. She instinctively grabs both her twintails and tries to use them to cover her face to mask her embarrassment.

"S-so I figured the quickest way to find do something exciting and make a difference at the same time was to join the air force! And um, here I am now!" She squeaks.

"Man, that's some super first world problem you got there." You roll your eyes.

"See? I knew you would say that!" Vicky wails. "I just seem like a spoiled and entitled brat to you, right?"

"Well, spoiled, yeah." You grin as you pat Vicky on the head. "But you're a great pilot and wingmate. You don't need to prove anything to me."

"R-really?" Vicky blinks in surprise.

"Trust me, you're not the first or last pilot to take up the job for wonky ideals and to relieve boredom." You chuckle. "You know, my mentor Karla has always had this kooky hippie fascination with the sky. Almost couldn't care less about what cause she was fighting for as long as she could get behind a fighter stick."

"You mean Valkyrie from the Wild Cards, right?" Vicky nods. "I sort of got that impression, seeing the videos of her flying."

"Damn, you could tell just from looking?" You laugh. "You're just perfectly suited to be a pilot, aren't you?"

"N-not at all." Vicky mumbles. "I'm still just scaredy cat in an actual battle..."

"Quit saying that! You're one of the best pilots I've seen! i mean it!" You assure her, punching her lightly in the shoulder.

"I-It's flattering. Really." Vicky nods. "Um. Um, this might sound weird, but since you're here..."

"Yeah?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Would... would you mind staying over tonight?" Vicky asks, her face getting much redder. "You know, like a sleepover?"

"R-really!?" Vicky gasps in surprise. "I-I-I didn't think you would say yes!"

"Then don't ask the question if you're afraid of the answer!" You laugh.

"I guess you have a point there." Vicky concedes, letting out a deep sigh. "Oh no, this room only has one bed!"

"Didn't think this through, didn't ya?" You laugh and then nudge Vicky with your elbow playfully. "Or were you thinking this all the along?"

"N-nothing like that!" Vicky wails. "B-but we already agreed on it, so we have to go through with it!"

And that's how the both of you ended up in Vicky's bed, both snugly tucked away under the covers. You could practically feel the heat generated from Vicky's anxiety radiating through the bed.

"Um, Milly, mind if I ask you something personal?" She mumbles, her head partially covered by her blanket.

"Shoot." You say, trying to get comfortable.

"Do you... ever get bad dreams or anything?" She asks.

"What brought that up?" You frown.

"W-well, when you were in the infirmary..." Vicky pauses. "When I was keeping an eye on you, you seemed to be tossing and turning and mumbling in your sleep. It was kinda worrying, honestly."

"I get them from time to time." You admit quietly, as you shift nervously in Vicky's bed. "It's weird, honestly. I barely even remember the Belkan War at all, but I'll occasionally get a bad dream like last time that involves all that crap. It's super annoying, if you ask me."

"O-oh." Vicky pauses. "U-um, well, if you're feeling down, then you're always free to come to me!"

"To sleep with you?" You chuckle.

"Y- wait! No!" Vicky stammers, caught off guard by your answer. "I mean, I'm always going to be there if you need someone to talk to, you know?"

"I get it, Vicky." You smile as gently nudge her with your body. "And thanks for the offer. I'll keep that in mind."

"You should!"

It's then that you let out a yawn and close yoru eyes, your eyelids suddenly feeling extremely heavy...

---

Thankfully, you didn't have a bad dream like last time, though you're woken up a loud knock on the door. Next to you, Vicky was still snoring softly.

You decide to keep quiet and let Vicky do all the talking. Best not to put her on the spot any further.

"All right, just be sure not to be late!" Misono responds and you hear her footsteps as she walks off down the hall.

"Ahhhh, that was so close..." Vicky sighs as she clutches her chest. "My heart felt like it was about to fall out..."

"Heeeeeey, maybe we should invite Misono over for the next sleepover." You grin, prodding Vicky in her side. "I bet it'll be fun!"

"Don't joke about that!" Vicky blushes again. "A-anyways, we should be preparing for the briefing, right?"

"Yeah, yeah." You sigh as you get up as well. "So what do we do about the computer? Can we plug the AI into it now?"

"We only just got the hardware finished." Vicky shakes her head as she already starts tying up her hair into her signature twintails. "I'll still have to install the software, and try and make sure its compatible with the AI."

"All right, I'll hold on to the AI in the mean time, then." You say as you yawn and stretch. "Let me know when you're ready to test."

"Got it!" Vicky nods as you make your exit.

With that, you head back to your own quarters where you shower and grab a fresh change of clothes. You do a quick double check to make sure you hadn't forgotten anything. You had all your clothes on, you were wearing the right uniform, and the AI hard drive was still securely nestled in your pocket.

After at least a week of leave time, you were finally read to get back into the thick of things and start flying again. Hopefully you weren't TOO rusty from your little vacation...

It wasn't long that you were up in the air, on the way to your next target. The briefing was short and simple, with little opportunity for questions.

Apparently, your fellow IUN squadrons had been doing a good job putting the rogue penal squadrons on the back foot while you were gone. Now, they were starting to get desperate, meaning they were getting bolder in their raids. Just recently, a few of the remaining squadrons banded together and seized the Osean 444th airbase.

Well, "airbase" was a bit too much of a flattering term. The 44th airbase doubled as an Osean military prison and boneyard. Seemed to be a popular dumping ground for the Osean military.

Well, either way, it was bad. Not only did the penal squadrons now have access to an entire prison's worth of fresh manpower, but the nearby boneyard provided them with plenty of airframes and parts to keep their ragtag air force supplied and maintained. On top of that, they had managed to take most of the base personnel hostage. It was a huge mess.

The Andersen was already moving into position to send a team of Osean commandos to take back the base.

On your end, the IUN was sending Raven and Orpheus squadrons to support Mage and Golem squadrons. The idea was to draw out the penal squadrons and engage them to prevent them from noticing the commando force.

However, there were secondary objectives, too. Intel had stated the prisoners had stashed escape planes in the boneyard. They would have to be destroyed to cut off their main avenue of escape. Not to mention, there were the prison defenses itself, which would not only keep the hostages trapped inside, but would also keep the commandos out.

Of course, you were very adamant that Raven squadron be responsible for handling the penal squadrons as they took to the air. Orpheus would be backing you up while Mage and Golem focused on the secondary objectives.

"All planes, this is Bandog. I'll be your AWACS for this mission." You hear a gruff, stern voice on the radio. "I expect you all to put down these convicts without friendly casualties. You all should be capable of at least that much."

"He sounds like a hardass." You mutter on your squadron frequency.

"He's freaking scary!" Vicky whimpers.

"But he's very driven! I can respect that!" Misono responds happily.

"Girls, focus." Bandit reminds you all. "The prison has probably spotted us on radar by now. Get ready for an engagement."

Up ahead, you could see the 444th Base, safely nestled on an island near the coast. You could see in the distance that planes were scrambling to takeoff, but the convicts were complete idiots. There was a pair of MiG-35s on combat air patrol, already vectoring towards your formation to buy time for the rest of the planes to take off.

You're pushed back in your seat as your afterburners roar, blasting you past the the pair of MiG-35s before they can react.

The airbase up ahead starts getting larger and larger in your canopy as you rapidly close the distance. Your targeting computer whines as you get a solid lock on the planes stacked up on the runway. You fire off a pair of missiles at the lead plane in the group, an F-18. You quickly follow up by strafing the planes immediately behind it with a long burst of gunfire.

You don't even slow down as the entire line of planes, easily an entire squadron, goes up in flames instantly, spreading chain reactions of secondary fuel and ammo explosions across the entire base.

"Wow!" Vicky gasps.

"Holy shit! Did the entire base just go up!?" Another pilot yelps. "Did they self destruct!"

"No! One of those IUN pilots dove straight in! Took a whole squadron out!"

"Which one?!"

By that time, you had already boosted out of the effective range of the base's air defenses. Both your squadron and Orpheus were getting held up by the CAP. On the ground, the one runway you strafed was up in flames and strewn with plane wreckage. It was completely out of action, forcing the remaining convict planes to redirect to the backup runway.

You could try to link up with the rest of your squadron, or try to dive in for another attack run on the second runway. However, the base defenses were already on to you, and your missile warning system was already telling you that you air defense radars were keeping track of you.

And you were currently out here on your own. That left you vulnerable to any other planes of CAPs that you may have missed.

You decide to play it safe and take a wide circle around the base as Golem and Mage close in to perform their own attacks to weaken the base defenses. Missiles and bombs streak out, knocking out SAM sites, strongpoints, towers, and walls.

"Raven Two." You hear Bandog address you directly. "Excellent job suppressing those convicts. I'm picking up new contacts coming in from the north. They are not displaying IUN IFF and are not responding to hails. We can only assume they're hostile."

"So what do you want me to do about it?" You ask.

"The commando team is currently en route to the base. Provide protection to them, either by escorting them or intercepting the enemy. I'll leave it up to your discretion."

"I'm on the way, Red!" You hear Vicky yelp on the radio. "Just give me some time to catch up!"

Hm, well, if you stuck with the commando team, that would give Vicky enough time to catch up to you. Or, you could try and intercept those unknown bogies right now, though you wouldn't have backup for a while...

You continue your wide circle, allowing Vicky to catch up to you while you observe a small fleet of helicopters making their way towards the base. They take sporadic small arms fire from the ground as they approach, but nothing too serious.

"I'm here!" Vicky yelps as she finally catches up. You see Bandit and Misono's planes also close behind. Looks like the CAP was already taken down, with Orpheus knocking down the rest of the convict planes as they take off.

"Bogies incoming." Bandog warns. "I'm reading multiple F-4s and MiG-21s with Su-30s mixed in. Show them no mercy."

Huh, maybe this Bandog guy wasn't so bad after all.

Sure enough, on your radar screen, you were reading at least two dozen contacts. Sure, they were mostly obsolete planes like Bandog had pointed out, but it was still a of them compared to just the four of you.

You drive straight through the cloud of obsolete planes, your cannon blazing and tearing through two MiG-21s and an F-4. In a few short seconds, you're already clear of the formation, power climbing into the clouds above.

Bandit, Vicky, and Misono were close behind. Vicky and Misono weren't able to secure any kills, but Bandit is able to nail a pair of Su-30's.

It was pretty clear those Su-30s were acting as squadron leaders, as the entire formation of planes immediately starts breaking up in over a dozen smaller groups, flying wildly in all directions. Without centralized command, the undisciplined convict pilots were completely breaking down.

"We gotta get outta here!"

"These pilots ain't human!"

"Get outta my way!"

"Look at those wild dogs chasing their own tails." Bandog says with contempt. "Put them all down."

Some of the convict planes were drifting towards the prison. They might cause trouble for the other squadrons, but Orpheus should be able to handle them, hopefully. There were other knots of pilots trying to flee, taking off towards the mainland at high speed.

"That's true." Bandit nods. "But do you think they'll listen to anybody?"

"I'm sure your calm and commanding demeanor can reassure them they'll be treated fairly." Misono points out.

"Or they might respect Red's strength!" Vicky points out. "Everybody's seen what she did!"

"HEY DUMBASSES!" You yell. "I'm THE MOTHERFUCKING RED TAIL! THE ONE WHO JUST KICKED ALL YOUR ASSES! IF YOU DON'T WANNA BE PUT DOWN LIKE THE WILD DOGS YOU ARE, YOU ALL BETTER GET YOUR ASSES DOWN ON THE GROUND AND GO BACK TO YOUR DAMN CELLS!"

There's a brief moment of silence over the comms before slowly and surely, all of the convict planes begin vectoring towards the 444th base.

"Give it up, everyone, it was a good run while it lasted." One of the convicts sighs in a resigned tone. "I'd rather be in a cell than dead."

"Wow, it really worked." Vicky gasps.

"I thought you suggested I talk to them." You grunt.

"W-well, I didn't think it would actually work!" Vicky squeaks.

"Well, you certainly do have your way with words." Misono laughs.

"We at least avoided further casualties." Bandit says coolly. "Good job, Red."

"Like I said, I wasn't in the mood to clean up the Oseans' mess." You grumble. "Besides, every convict we leave alive is another one to drain their tax dollars."

"Your mind works in some really weird ways." Vicky sighs.

"I'm not complaining." Bandit says. "Anyways, it seems like our mission is over. We better be heading back to base."

Time seems to slow down and stop all around you as you realize what was coming after you. Ever since you had narrowly escaped its first attack, you've been keeping a close eye on sightings of the Raven ever since. The fact the Raven was now back, after such a large absence from the public eye, all but confirmed there was another faction in the shadows, pulling all the strings.

However, to put all that knowledge to use, you'd have to survive, first.
