Howdy all, and welcome to “A Song of Duty and Spite; House Reynold Quest”. Here we play as Ser Mervyn Reynold, a lowborn son of a bastard hedge knight who, through his skill at arms and a bit of luck, has married into the noble House Reynold of Ember Peak. He currently serves as Lady Elleanor Reynold’s sword shield, and in the murky depths of in-house politics he will attempt to rise high despite coming from such humble origins. These waters are treacherous however. Lady Elleanor has not forgotten her once betrothed, the late Reynard Reyne, and while she attempts to keep control of her house, her husband Lord Titus has the backing of Lord Tywin himself, and has a strong influence over the Reynold Military. The Mad King grows more and more erratic, and there are rumours that the relationship between Lord Tywin and King Aerys grow strained. Will you remain Lady Elleanors right hand, or will you strike out on your own in your pursuit of position and power? Let get stuck in and find out!!

Dramatis Personae:
>Ser Mervyn Reynold, 25, Our MC.
Ser Mervyn grew up the son of a bastard hedge knight who did not know his father and a blacksmiths daughter. After his mother passed at the age of 5, his father began travelling the westerlands to sell his sword to anyone who would hire him. Eventually, the man passed away to a pox when Mervyn was 17, but not before knighting his son. He than took his fathers horse and mule and travelled in the same way. Eventually, he heard of a tourney for a young maiden’s hand, he attended and won handily over many much nobler knights. He now serves the Lady of the House, Elleanor Reynold as her sworn shield.

>Alyssa Reynold, 17, Mervyn’s Wife
Alyssa is a pretty young girl, and mother to hers and Ser Mervyn’s infant son, Marqus. She is driven and tenacious, if not impatient and occasionally jealous, and she has been reared to be a player in the game by her mother. While not considered beautiful as her elder sister might be, her red curls and sea green eyes certainly make her comely. She is gifted at weaving through the art of noble intrigue and has a knack for remembering heraldry and house history.

>Tyrus Reynold, 15
Tyrus Reynold is Ser Mervyn’s squire and the second son and fifth child of Lord Titus and Lady Elleanor. He has the makings of fearsome fighter and knight, although his temper can be dangerous and difficult to control. He is the same height as his sponsor and looks to soon over take him in size, if not skill, and resembles his father in looks but his mother in colouring. Soon to be a father to a bastard child, and is in love with a common girl from the kitchens of Ember Peak by the name of Rose. .

>Lord Titus Reynold, 46
Lord Titus was born Titus Lantell of Lannisport, and grew up to be a knight who swore his sword to the Lannisters. During the Reyne/Tarbeck Rebellion, he was commanded by Tywin Lannister to march with 300 men to confine the Lady Elleanor, then a maiden of 16 years, and prevent House Reynold from aiding the Reynes and Tarbecks in rebellion as a favour to her father, the late Lord Marqus. A relatively oafish man who cares not for the workings of his house, he is not without a degree of cunning and ultimately seeks to usurp his wife as the true head of the house.

>Lady Elleanor Reynold, 36
Lady Elleanor is a woman who remembers. Once betrothed to Ser Reynard Reyne, she endured losing both her father and betrothed in the span of a year at the age of 16, and was subsequently married off to a lowly knight of Lannisport. She endured the dishonour, even providing 6 children to her husband, all in the memory of her father and Reynard. She is the true power in Ember Peak, and seeks to retain control of her house by any means necessary.

The other teams for the melee were rattled off with equal grandeur and soon a shuffling of tables and was underway to allow for the mingling of the various teams. Cardyn and yourself stood from your own table and you escorted Alyssa to where Tygon and Andrea were sitting. Andrea had welcomed you both and Alyssa was soon seated by her sister in law and although Tygon gave his sister a warm smile but the look he gave you was one of measured neutrality. The two of you hadn’t spoken since your talk regarding his mother and the atmosphere between the two of you had been distant. You would need to speak to him about the matter again soon as Elleanor would be meeting with the Master of Coin over the next few days to begin to arrange her possession of Castamere. House Reynold was riding a treacherous path that was on the razors edge and you would soon need to commit to a side in the absolute before everything came crumbling down around your ears. Bidding them all a good evening, you left them to their gossip and entertainment as you went in search of your new team mates as you put such heavy thoughts to the wayside.

You’d made your way to your teams table long after the mass of shuffling as knights and lords to their respective groupings for the melee. Seven rounds would open the Grand Melee, each comprised of seven teams made up of seven warriors. You found the fifth table to have a green flag hung above it and found it almost full of the other competitors, with only a single seat left that indicated you were the last man to join the table. You looked upon your team mates and found a myriad of colours and sigils and the first man to introduce himself to you was a tall and handsome young man who wore a long cloak of purple and black, with a golden horse brooch that clasped it tightly around his slender frame. Were you to have wagered you would have guessed he would be in between Tyrus and Tygon in age. His cheek bones were sharp, almost austerely so, and if the youth could grow any scruff he kept it well under control as his smooth skin was marred by neither scars or pock marks. He stood from the bench and when he looked to you with his emerald green eyes you were greeted with a look that spoke of boredom and etiquette that almost took you by surprise. Most men his age were enthusiastic to the point of recklessness about the prospect of the glory to be earned in the coming days, and flagons of wine and ale were being drank as fast as they could be poured. This man’s eyes however, spoke to that of a sober clarity as he took your hand in a grip that was surprisingly strong.

“I take it you must be Ser Mervyn Reynold. It is a pleasure to meet you Ser. My name is Ser Pastorn Malroy, third son of Lord Vamos and Lady Esmella Malroy, and these are the rest of our teammates…”

He soon politely introduced the rest of the men and you had made a point to committing their names to memory. There was Ser Creighton Redfort, the second son of Lord Horton Redfort who hailed from the soaring mountains of the Vale of Arryn. He had greeted you with a raised goblet and a slightly lazy eye and you could see the man was already into his cups. Next there was Ser Baelor Cardingale of Strongbird Sound. He introduced himself as a lord of the rainwood from the Stormlands and his doublet was split in half, blue and red, with a counter changed cardinal and blue jay battling one another. He had greeted you piously, making the sign of the seven-pointed star after shaking your hand and you could see that his cup was not filled with wine but with water. Following him was a man who was introduced as Ser Cornelius Rivers, the bastard of Dambrook. His clothes were rather well cut for someone of bastard birth and he was certainly no hedge knight, and he explained how he served his half brother as his Captain of the Guard. The man carried himself like a soldier, although he didn’t have the look of a cavalryman and he was likely an infantryman to the bone. He wore wiry red side whiskers down his cheeks and kept the of his hair cropped short and you could see his nose had been broken more than once.

The man who followed him however was most definitely a hedge knight. Ser Charles of the Ivy was a man approaching fourty, and his clothes spoke of utility and of almost over use. His shoulders had a tired sag in them, and he appeared to be in a drinking competition with Ser Creighton although he was significantly more sober than the younger and better bred knight. He hailed from the Reach and although he spoke of chivalry the way he was egging on Ser Creighton led you to believe there was a wager on the line. Lastly there was a man from the north. Ser Torben Hewer hailed from what he called the Barrowlands, a region in the southron half of the north and when asked about his knighthood explained that amongst the Barrowlands and lands near to White Harbour, knighthood, while not common, was still something that was not unheard of. He was a tall and rangy man, with the hungry eyes of a wolf and was nearly as hairy. Everything from his eyebrows were long and unkempt and there was hair on each of his knuckles that he had wrapped around a drinking horn that he had kept filled with ale.

You sat down amidst your new companions and reached for a goblet and hailed a passing servant, who filled the cup with what looked like a rich red and took a sip, nodding your head and Ser Pastorn coughs politely to get your attention.

“So tell me Ser Mervyn, are you perhaps a grandson or nephew of the late Lord Marqus Reynold?”

“A grandson of… Lord Marqus? No Ser, I’m think you may be confused. My son is named Marqus Reynold, but he is not even half a year old.” Your face showed a small amount of incredulity and confusion although you tried to keep a polite look, although it seemed that the young man seemed to be of the same mind.

“Forgive me Ser, I was under the impression that you were related to the late Lord Marqus of Ember Peak. My father served under him during the War of the Ninepenny Kings and still speaks about the military genius of the man, as well as the strength of his character.”

You cursed quietly under your breath at the momentary lack of thought. Of course he had meant Alyssa’s grandfather and not your son. You’d forgotten about the man, and in truth you had not often heard many speak of him in Ember Peak. The servants there had hardly known him as much of his time had been spent in Casterly Rock, and Elleanor was hardly the type to reminisce with those who served her. You laugh off the confusion as you explain to the young man.

“I apologize Ser. I myself am not a grandson of Marqus Reynold, but my son is named for my wifes grandfather. History is not my strong suit, in spite of my lady wife’s best efforts. I married into the family nearly two years ago after I won her hand in a tournament.”

“There’s no need for apologies Ser. I did think it passing odd that you are blonde and blue eyed, when my father always spoke of a man with a fiery red mane and eyes that resembled the grey green of the sea. Regardless however, it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance Ser. Should it not be rude to ask Ser, I am curious as to how you gained the name Reynold if you married into the family. Perhaps you could regale me with the tale?”

And so you did, starting with your childhood and how your mother had passed away at an early age and that your father had taken you on as a squire. You’d left out some of the more personal events, especially those regarding your fathers cruelty and more dangerous episodes, but still included details of growing up hungry and mean. Those were dark memories to relive, and the only person alive who knew of them was Alyssa and even that had been a hard pressed thing for her to weasel out of you. The dark was where those memories belonged and it was only in the dark that they came to the surface. Instead however, you tell Pastorn the story of your first kill.

“I was thirteen, or near enough to not make a difference. My father had been hired on by a merchant to help guard two wagons on their way to Lannisport from Crakehall. I think the wagons were full of furs but it could have been something else. Either way it makes no difference, we were set upon by thieves on the road. My father took off to defend the wagons and left me to defend our own pack mule. A mule I still own to this day in fact, cantankerous old bastard that he is. One of the bandits tried to sneak around the fighting to steal our mule and all of our supplies. He probably saw me and thought me an easy mark he could scare off or get rid of but I surprised him. My father had given me a cudgel and I caught the bastard with it right in the cheek. He fell to the ground and I didn’t stop. It was messy. I remember trying not to throw up afterwards and it was all I could do to not stare at the bloody ruin I’d made. How about yourself Ser?”

The young gives you a long and distant look and you can see the line of his mouth harden into a thin line. He was a man of few words that much was obvious, and the look in his emerald green eyes was a sad one as he was clearly reliving the memory inside his head. It was a look that you were familiar with, the look of trauma that can only come from the taking of your first life. Hell, even Tyrus the angry fucker that he was had vomited and taken some time to come to grips with the fact he had killed a man. Pastorn picks up his wine cup and rolls the wine in it as he considered the contents of the untouched cup…

--- Ser Mervyn Reynold’s Persuasion (Charm) Test ---
Rolled 17 vs DC: 12
Result: Two Degrees of Success

You grasped your own cup and picked it up to clink the two glasses together and take a large swallow of the wine. Pastorn Malroy looks from your cup to his and then to you, before lifting the cup to his lips and takes a small swallow before placing the cup back on the table still nearly full.

“Auroch.” It was a game played by mercenaries, hedge knights and soldiers across Westeros.

“I beg your pardon Ser?”

“Auroch. It’s a drinking game. You can’t drink using your right hand Ser, and if you do and someone calls you on it by saying Auroch, then you have to finish your drink.”

A slightly bemused look crosses the young mans face and he shakes his head as if that was an acceptable excuse to not down the contents of his cup.

“No Ser, you have to see it off. The rules of the game are sacred, you don’t have a choice in the matter. Down the hatch, one pull. See Ser Cornelious knows.”

The Bastard of Dambrook nods his head solemnly before taking a long pull from his own cup, encouraging the young man and you crossed your arms and stared at him expectantly until the young valyrian brings his cup to his lips, careful to use his left hand this time, and attempts to finish his cup. He makes it approximately half way before putting the cup down and begins to cough which brings laughter from the entirety of the table and Pastorn winces before supressing his coughs and finishing off the cup to cheers. You reach over and clap him on the shoulder and drain your own cup handily before reaching out for a pitcher and pouring the two of you another round of wine as you settle in and ask again after his own first kill. He is still hesitant to answer but you could see the wine was doing it’s work.
>>
“It was…it was a bandit like yourself Ser. I was squiring for…well, his name doesn’t matter, but my sponsor fell in battle against the Kingswood Brotherhood, a band a bandits, thieves and merry men who were terrorizing the Kingswood. I rode out with such company as Ser Arthur Dayne and Lord Sumner Crakehall. My sponsor was struck down by a low blow and I rushed forward in an attempt to save him. My sword took the man in the neck and…and he fell. I still remember how his blood spurted forth and pattered against my armour. It sounded almost like summer rain for a moment. I slew three more men that day defending my masters prostrate form but he died from the wound in his belly. I earned my knighthood from Ser Arthur Dayne himself for my bravery, but the memory is still…soured by death Ser Mervyn.”

He takes another swallow of wine after the clink of glasses and you lean in on your elbow. You could feel the wine affecting you as well as you continued the conversation.

“So are you married Ser Pastorn? I know you nobles get married younger than us lowborn do. My own lady wife was only sixteen when her and I wed”

“I am not Ser Mervyn. But please, do tell me about your own wife Ser. I am sure that is a story in and of itself.”

He was a prickly youth, not keen to talk about himself, that much was clear but he seemed an honest sort and you indulged him with the tale. You told him how you’d heard of the call for knights of quality and pedigree to fight for the hand of the Lady Alyssa Reynold. You told him of how you had been scorned for your name, entering the lists as Ser Mervyn Hill in your patchwork armour riding upon your ill tempered rounsey. Few had payed you any attention at all until the actual joust had started.

“Now jousting isn’t my strong suit if I’m being honest. I lean towards the melee myself but luck was on my side that day. I unhorsed my first two opponents in as many passes and by the end of the day I was sat across from a Ser Herman Swyft fighting for the privilege of her hand. He won the first tilt, but my lance broke cleaner on second and third pass. It might have ended there had our positions been reversed and he had the lead but I was ahead and Lord Titus Reynold called for the contest to continue. The next round saw Ser Herman tie our scores with a well-placed blow that nearly unhorsed me and we prepared for the fifth tilt. It was the last. I struck him cleanly in the breastplate and the man was knocked from his horse into the dirt. I’ll never forget that moment so long as I live, nor the look of distress on Alyssa’s face until she saw me remove my helm.”
>>
Pastorn Malroy chuckles softly at the tale. You’d been careful not to mention that this past year you’d killed Ser Herman Swyft for insulting your wife and squires honour. Such things had no place here.

“I should like to meet your wife I think Ser Mervyn. I would like to hear such a tale told from her point of view. She sounds like a lovely woman though by all accounts. You mentioned you had a son as well correct?”

You tell him all about our son who was five months old now and was on the verge of being able to crawl. You talk of your son like the proud father you were. Of his fierce grip and even fiercer temper. Of how he looked so much like his mother with his mop of flame red hair and his eyes that looked like the sea.

“Well Ser Mervyn I shall have to meet your son as well. If the stories my father tells are true I hope he grows into his namesake. The stories I’ve heard of Lord Marqus were nothing short of heroic.”

Talk runs long into the evening of all manner of things and the commotion of the evening was beginning to take it’s toll. Ser Creighton Redfort was passed out on the bench and Ser Charles of the Ivy had stumbled away with some serving girl nearly an hour past…

What's up with the golden horse pin? I can't imagine merv being too knowledgable about their trade.
Ask about his siblings, he mentioned being the third son, does his elder brothers seek to compete here as well and should we be weary of them?
We heard a rumor about a Malroy being the supposed next in line for the Kingsguard and that the ceremony was to take place soon, who is that?
If he plans on courting any women while he is here and seeking favors to wear.
Is a man of the joust or melee?

Ser Torben is actually Lord Torrhen's great, great grandson. The House Creation was set during the Dance of the Dragons and ooooh boy is it getting heated at the moment.
>>
“So Ser Pastorn, you mentioned that you were a third son. Are your brothers competing as well?”

“Yes and no Ser Mervyn. My eldest brother Donold will also be competing in the melee. He tends to favour it over the joust although I fear he is a better hunter than he is a warrior. It may be an ill thing to speak so poorly of family, but his skill could be rated fair at best. As for my second brother, he is…he did not attend.” The melancholic look had begun to creep into his eyes, as if the fire in them was wavering in a strong breeze but he manages to keep it from going out completely. “My mother and father attend though, as well as my sister. My fathers bannerman, Ser Vance Redward attends also, even if he did bring his…natural son. Ser Vance will surely compete in the melee, although I expect he will be one of the first to dismount. He prefers to use a two handed sword and he was once quite skilled, even if age has slowed him down a mite. He was the first knight I ever squired for as a matter of fact. His sigil is a red horse, over purple and black.”

“Horses seem quite important to your family Ser Pastorn. I can see the golden horse pin on your cloak, and your bannerman’s sigil is a horse as well.”

The corners of Pastorn’s lips creep upwards slightly into what was almost a smile and what looked almost like a spark of interest appeared in his eyes as he shook his head, bemused.

“Horses are indeed quite important to my family Ser. They are our lifeblood. My family has been breeding horses upon the violet plains since Ser Aeson Malroy first built Steadhold nearly three hundred years ago. If you came by the way of the Gold Road you almost certainly passed by Steadhold Ser Mervyn, as well as seeing the Violet Plains that extend for leagues surrounding her.”

You had indeed passed by them you remembered. Alyssa had gushed over the beauty of the place while riding through the plains at sunset. “We did indeed Ser.”

“We breed primarily coursers, ranging from horses of fine, but ordinary quality to a breed worthy of our sigil. Fine, golden courses that possess the bloodline of Old Valyria that can be traced back hundreds of years. There are no finer horses in Westeros Ser Mervyn. Perhaps tomorrow before the melee you might allow me to show you my own steed? Although I am sure you will see more than a few of my families horses upon the field tomorrow.”

“I’d be honoured Ser. Perhaps you might allow me to show you my own horse. A fine red courser himself, from the herds of House Webber.”

“I have heard of House Webber’s stock before. A fine mount I am sure, but I fear of lesser quality than the horses of House Malroy.”
>>
You bark out a laugh and run your hand through your hair. Triumph was the finest horse you’d ever ridden. It would take an impressive beast to convince you otherwise and you told him as such, to which he assures you that his family had brought some Malroy stock for sale and that you were nearly sure to wish to purchase one if you had the coin.

“Speaking of Malroy stock, I’ve heard a rumour even as far west as the Westerlands regarding the Kingsguard. Do you know if there is any truth in the whispers that a Malroy is to be inducted into the Kingsguard to replace Ser Grandinson?”

“That would be my uncle, Ser Dontos Malroy. He is truly the most fierce and skilled warrior of my house, and is pious and honourable as any true knight should be. My family and I are expecting the announcement to be made this very evening at the conclusion of the feast. I must warn you Ser, my uncle is a prodigy in the arts of combat, truly worthy of joining the ranks of Ser Arthur Dayne and Ser Gerold Hightower. I would advise avoiding him on the field unless given no other option. Luckily, he is fighting in the second opening round instead of the fifth like us.”

Ser Torben stands to relieve himself abruptly, saying as much in his grating voice and the four remaining at the table shuffle in closer and begin to discuss the prize money. 10,000 gold dragons were on the line, with 5000 for the second place and 1000 for third. Ser Cornelious spoke of outfitting his men with new steel and coats of mail, as well as potentially building an outpost in the foothills of the mountains near his home. Ser Creighton and he had been discussing the matter before the former had passed out on the bench in a puddle of wine and it was quite obvious that the two men knew one another. As it turns out, Dambrook bordered the Vale of Arryn and was plagued by the same mountain clans that House Redfort was. The two houses had attempted to root out the heathens but had been unsuccessful in the past.

Ser Baelor Cardingale speaks more towards of building his own lands, as well as contributing to the faith. He was a pious man, and his home of Songbird Sound was situated on the River Slayne. He was of a mind to turn his families logging industry towards the building of ships and he would use the winnings to hire the finest shipwright he could find. Pastorn begins to speak but he is interrupted by a herald introducing Ser Gerold Hightower and King Aerys both standing in front of the high bench. Ser Gerold holds a white cloak in his hands and the herald speaks to the entirety of the assembled crowd. Ser Pastorn turns to watch the proceedings with a smile on his face as he searches the crowd for his uncle
>>
“LORDS, LADIES AND KNIGHTS PLEASE TURN YOUR ATTENTION NOW TO HIS EXCELLENCY, KING AERYS THE SECOND OF HIS NAME AND HIS LORD COMMANDER OF THE KINGSGUARD, SER GEROLD HIGHTOWER.”

You can see Ser Gerold speak and the herald repeats his words for all to hear.

“A MAN OF THE KINGSGUARD IS SWORN TO DEFEND THE ROYAL FAMILY WITH HIS LIFE. HE IS THEIR SWORD, AND THEIR SHIELD. ONLY THE MOST SKILLED AND LOYAL OF MEN ARE SELECTED FOR SUCH AN HONOUR, REGARDLESS OF THEIR BIRTH!

THE MAN SELECTED HAS BEEN CHOSEN FOR HIS SKILL AT ARMS DESPITE HIS AGE, AS WELL AS HIS NOBLE BEARING AND HERITAGE!

IN LIEU OF HIS FATHERS RECENT ABSENCE, HOUSE LANNISTER IS PROUD TO SERVE HOUSE TARGARYEN AS THEY HAVE SINCE THE DAYS OF THE FIELD OF FIRE!

I, SER GEROLD HIGHTOWER, WELCOME SER JAIME LANNISTER, SON OF LORD TYWIN LANNISTER, INTO THE ORDER OF THE WHITE SWORDS!”

The assembled crowd was a mix of reactions. Many cheered, particularly those from the West but it was not a resounding cheer that would be expected. Many from what you assumed were the crownlands were silent and you could see Ser Pastorn stiffen at the announcement. You watched as Ser Jaime Lannister, a similarly young man all clad in gold and scarlet made his way to the high bench to kneel before Ser Gerold as he was inducted into the Kingsguard before all the realm. He turned to the crowd after it was said and done, wearing a snow white cloak as he was introduced as Ser Jaime Lannister of the Kingsguard. Ser Pastorn stood and begs your leave, informing you he would have his squire find you on the morrow before the melee but that he had pressing matters to attend to and leaves you at the bench with Ser Baelor, Ser Cornelious and the inebriated Ser Creighton…

You decide to follow Ser Pastorn’s example and beg your leave. The day would be hard tomorrow with so many men fighting for such an impressive prize and fighting with a hangover would surely not be in your best interests. You make your way to where you had left your wife at the table and the two of you are soon walking arm in arm together towards the end of the hall, and after that through the courtyard, out the main gate and finally to your pavilion.

Alyssa for her part was thrilled at Ser Jaime Lannister’s ascension to the Kingsguard. “Although it that means that the Dwarf of Casterly Rock, Lord Tywin’s younger and crippled son Tyrion, now stood in line to inherit it was surely a boon to the Westerlands in prestige and power to have one of their own on the Kingsguard. Especially seeing as he was the youngest knight to ever join such a prestigious order.” She explained it the entire length of the journey back to your bed. These types of politics were over your head however and you simply nodded your head and hummed and hawed along with her.

The two of you climbed into bed after undressing and the two of you enjoyed the comfort of each others bodies. It was a very different sort of love making than the previous night have been as your ardor was more similar to a low burning bed of coals than the roaring bonfire. Once your seed had been spent and you were laying beside her with your arm wrapped around her she looked up at you.

“So who was the knight you were speaking with? Cerenna said she passed by you and that you appeared to be enjoying the conversation with him.”

“His name is Ser Pastorn Malroy. Seems like a bit of a quiet lad but he carries himself well. Apparently that castle surrounded by the purple fields is his home. Steedhold, or Steadhold. Something like that I can’t quite remember. Perhaps I had a little too much wine. Why do you ask anyways?”

She giggled. “Do you know if he is wearing the favour of any lady in the melee tomorrow?”

“No I can’t say I thought to ask. Why?”

She rustled under the blankets and propped herself up on an elbow and traced a finger alone the lines of your chest while you in turn ran your thumb alone her own breast. “I think Cerenna is smitten with him. She said his eyes were as sad as a song, and that he was tall and handsome. Perhaps husband, you might ask after the matter of him tomorrow before the competition begins in earnest. I’m sure Cerenna would appreciate it. I know I would, I’ve never seen her so brazen about a man before. Normally even I struggle to get her to open up about such things…

“Alright Ally, I’ll mention it to him. But I am not making any promises though.”

“That’s all I ask for Merv. Thank you.”

The two of you drifted off to sleep together to the soft sounds of revelling men and women. To the distant sounds of songs and music as well as drunken slurs and steps. The sounds of love and passion could be heard as well and you breathed in the smell of your wife and closed your eyes with a smile on your face.

--- 15/12/281 ---

Ser Pastorn’s squire had arrived at your pavilion in the early morning as the young man had said he would, and Tyrus was finishing buckling up the straps of your vambraces and you bid the boy to wait outside which he happily does so. Alyssa saunters into the main room of the pavilion in a simple dress holding a piece of cloth grey lace that had floral patterns sewn into the fabric that she tied around your arm once Tyrus was finished.

“Best of luck husband! I’ll be cheering for you!”

You give her a quick kiss and tell Tyrus to have Triumph brought around which the boy does so dutifully. You finally place your helmet over your head and allow Ser Pastorn’s squire to lead both yourself and Tyrus to the Malroy pavilion where you found your acquaintance seeing to his own horse similarly clad as you were. You dismounted and removed your helm, handing it off to Tyrus and yourself and Pastorn share a nod.

“Good Morning Ser Mervyn. I apologize for my sudden absence last night. It was a thing poorly done if I may say, both my behaviour and my uncles passing over for a man whom I was knighted beside. But I would put that behind us if it is all the same to you Ser.”

You shrug your shoulders and put up your palms as a sign of indifference to the matter. In your mind there was no insult in his actions. “So this is the beast you spoke so highly of yes?”

He turns and makes a display of an elaborate wave of introducing his horse and you could see that he was immensely comfortable in his armour. The steel plate was coloured a regal looking purple and the fittings were gold, or at least gold plated, and the straps were all of a strong and supple looking black leather. A fine made set of armour to be sure.

“He is indeed Ser. This is Pride, and he is truly deserving of the name. The pride of my father’s herds.”

You patted the horses muzzle and you had to admit it was a truly beautiful horse. It was lean, with long powerful legs and a golden sheen to it’s coat that was reminiscent of molten gold. It’s eyes were dark and intelligent, a sign that albinism had nothing to do with it’s colouration. You’d never seen a horse like it in fact.
>>
“He is a beautiful horse Ser Pastorn. I fear you spoke true. Once I’ve seen this steed in action I will likely have to see about purchasing such a mount for myself, and possibly for my men as well.”

The man had began to inspect your own horse and although he gave a look of approval over the beast, he still did not look overly impressed.

“I imagine you will Ser. Your horse is a fine example of Reach horseflesh, but it lacks the certain Valyrian flair, as well as our Stable Master Gawen’s innate knowledge at pairing stallions and mares.”

A nod from you was your response and it was a fitting way to ask about your promise to your wife.

“Speaking of passing stallions to mares, if you can forgive my crudeness, but I don’t see any sign of a favour upon your person. I remember you said you were unmarried is the reason I ask.”

He stiffens once more and a grimace flashed upon his face for a moment before his cool politeness prevailed over his emotion.

“I do not Ser.”

“Well, I know of at least one young lady who would be happy to give you her favour. My wife asked me to ask after you on behalf of her handmaiden, a Lady Cerenna Lantell. She’s a pretty, with flaxen hair and hazel eyes, and is something of an age with you. My wife says she saw the two of us talking last night and has spoken of little else since despite how shy the girl normally is. So if you’d like to fight for a young womans honour, I know it would surely please her…”

--- Ser Mervyn Reynold’s Persuasion (Convince) Test ---
Rolled 17 vs DC: 15
Result: One Degree of Success

Ser Pastorn let’s out a long breath as he pats his steed on the nose before turning to you and nodding his head.

“As you say Ser Mervyn. Cerenna Lantell you said? I suppose that is the least that I could do. I’m sure it would please my mother at least.”

“That’s correct Ser. If you’d like I can send you with my squire before the melee begins?”

“While I appreciate the sentiment Ser Mervyn, I believe that Grimsley here can find your pavilion again. I will see you at the tourney grounds within the hour Ser Mervyn.”

He mounted his steed and he was a truly impressive sight. A knight in purple and black mounted upon a steed of the purest gold that was reminiscent of his houses colours and sigil. His squire, who wore blue with a stripe of white with three small red birds sewn across the breast took Pride by the reins and led him back towards your pavilion while Tyrus led you and your own steed towards the tourney grounds.

You found the rest of your team assembled beneath the green flag and Tyrus hands you up the green tabard you’d been given and don it quickly. You headed to the stands to watch both the third and rounds be fought and you could see that you were right in your estimation of the fierceness of the competition and as the field cleared of it’s participants you returned to your steed and squire, as well as the rest of your team to discuss tactics.

You were a motley bunch, wearing various qualities of armour and there was some debate about the merits of various tactics to be used. Ser PAstorn for his part was quiet and you could see a piece of blue fabric tied about the hilt of his sword although his closed faced sallet helm hid the majority of his face so you could not read his face…

“I for one would suggest we stick together. We present as a unified unit and few are likely to approach us, and any we charge will likely be outnumbered. I would also avoid charging the centre straight away. I say we ride to the left, putting the barricade on our shield side and allow us to strike at any who ride against us. Sure it may be less glorious but this isn’t a battle, this is only the opening rounds of a tournament. Don’t forget the prize at the end of this damn thing.”

Ser Cornelious Rivers is the first to speak up as he spits a wad of phlegm into the dirt. “Speak for yourself Sers but the sooner I can get off of this damnable thing the better. I can’t use my poleaxe while I’m mounted so after the charge is done I’ll be fighting on my feet the way the smith intended us to thank you all very much.

Ser Baelor was next. “As much as I dislike agreeing with someone of such low birth, I am of a mind to agree with Ser Cornelious, although for vastly different reasons. I am here to make a name for myself, and glory shared is glory halved Sers.”

“Both Ser Charles of the Ivy and Ser Creighton Redfort are quick to agree with you. Ser Charles likely seeking protection the group offered, but Ser Creighton was quick to voice his opinion. “Most of my fighting’s been done against savage mountain clans and I’ve always found that numbers prevail. You’ve my sword and my lance Ser.

“It’s like you said Ser. This ain’t battle and I never liked tournaments much either. We don’t have much use for them in the North. I’m a fair rider at best and fight best using my great axe. My father did always say I fought like a wildling. Ser Baelor here has a point as well.”

That was Ser Torben out as well, leaving only Ser Pastorn. The man only looked to you for a moment before nodding his head and like that you were four. Perhaps not as intimidating as seven but it was still better than riding alone in such conditions. You soon heard the heralds calling for all participants to take their positions and the gate opened to allow you all to enter.
>>
>>3950403
Don't we get to reroll that 1 with Attractive?
>>
The seven sided arena was massive and the roar of the crowd was almost deafening as your team rode into it to take your place. The ground had been raked over by the attendants in between rounds but it did little to hide the stains of blood and horse excrement from the previous four rounds. You’d watched the previous rounds and you’d seen that the competition was both fierce and deadly. No less than three men had been killed for their efforts in the previous four rounds, the product of one being too young, one being too old and the most recent one had simply been unlucky when a shattered piece of lance had slipped inside his gorget and punctured him in the neck. The maesters that attended would be hard at work setting broken bones, stitching up cuts and tending to all manner of other wounds.

You shuffled in your saddle as you rolled your neck and heard the satisfying crackle of your joints cracking and Tyrus hands you a tourney lance before hurrying to the other side of the fence with the other squires. He wore black to match your armour and you saw the red and yellow pennant that hung on the end of your lance to show the rest of your colours. Alyssa’s favour was tied around your right wrist, a lacy piece of grey fabric as you remember the intense night the two of you’d had. The scratches on your back brought a small smile to your face behind your helm when they stung as you looked out at the rest of your competition. You saw colours and sigils of every sort and Triumph had begun to feel the tension as well as he begin to paw at the ground in irritation and strained at the reins slightly while you looked at Ser Pastorn, Ser Charles and Ser Creighton.

“Right. Stick together boys. Form a wedge and ride in formation and these bastards won’t know what hit them.”

You felt remarkably calm. Perhaps the recent events within your family had taken it’s toll on you, but now that you were finally given the opportunity to fight again you felt at ease and you took in a large breath as the trumpets sounded from each point of the arena and the your round of the melee began…

Nah we drop the two lowest rolls from each which means The Father's roll of 30 really only counts as 25. Which is the best roll by one.

4,6,5,6,4 = 25

The charge was a moment that any man could become addicted to. You thrust out your tourney lance with vigor and dug your spurs into Triumph as you led your small team to the left in the attempt to avoid the massive clusterfuck of a melee that was now beginning to take place in the middle of the arena. The sound of the crowd had disappeared in your ears only to be replaced by the sound of battle. You heard men and horses screaming, steel ringing and the thunk of metal on wood all the while the thunder of hooves pounded away at your ears. You find your first targets, two knights who were clad in purple tabards that had hung back from the charge and were patrolling the outskirts. Likely looking for targets or stragglers you figured but they noticed your charge as you approached and dug into their own mounts.

Pastorn maintained his place next to the barrier as did Ser Creighton behind him, while Ser Charles pulled off into the middle slightly and you took the outside position facing the mans shield. The man between Ser Charles and Ser Pastorn maintains his form true to the joust and focuses on Ser Charles. His own lance explodes onto the man’s shield and Ser Charles is sent reeling backwards in the saddle but his opponent was unlucky enough to be struck by two lances at once. The first one struck his star and moon patterned shield squarely breaking the lance clean while Pastorn’s found the man in the breastplate and the poor man on the receiving end of the double team was knocked cleanly out of his saddle as he lay in the dirt.

The man you faced down also remained true to the joust and focused on you. You saw what looked like some sort of demon painted on his shield but it looked rather garish to your eye. The purple and pinks were too vibrant to be any sort of intimidating and you bury your lance into the demons open maw and it shattered into a thousand fragments while your opponents had just clipped the steel banding of your heater shield. It was enough to crack his lance but you see the man tumbles off of his horse all the same. Pulling forth your cavalry hammer from your belt you wheel your horse about as does the rest of your party and while Pastorns opponent remains prostrate, your own was attempting to recover himself until he saw you rounding on him again. He called out his yield to you and you inform him of your name so that he could present his horse and arms to you at the melees end.

You reformed into a diamond as you positioned yourself to view the melee properly as you decided what was the next action to take.

You saw a group of four that you would run into if you continued your charge on your left, as well as a single knight who had ridden out of the center to catch his breath on your right. And of course there was always the eye of the storm as well...

A couple of things to point out before I get back to writing here.

Alot of these characters are going to want to pull themselves out of the competition and yield before taking too many wounds and injuries so that they can compete in the joust which many view as a more "prestigious" event. .

You guys will be allowed to pull out at any time as injuries and wounds begin to pile up. Wounds will be with you through most of the tournament, but injuries will be rolled for to see if they are healed by Maester Aethan at the end of each day.

You see another band of men who had the same idea that you did and you gesture with your hammer towards them and you were off. One man in bright blue armour gets the attention of a knight in red and white with what look like griffons battling on his shield and soon the group is charging towards your own.

On your immediate left you could see Ser Charles was faltering. You could see that he would be unlikely to weather the charge but to his credit he had not yielded and instead charged ahead with you. You lined up with your opponent, the red and white griffon knight, and you saw that he was brandishing his long sword with purpose. Your two parties began to close as the ground before the two was eaten up and you came together with a resounding clash.

Your hammer came across and connected viciously with the knights helmet while his sword had connected with your breastplate before sliding up and connecting with your gorget. You saw your opponent’s sword fall from his grasp and you struggled to keep your grip on your hammer. Even through the steel you could still feel the blow and it was an extremely uncomfortable one that pained you are you tried to catch your breath. You circled once more and saw that your suspicion about Ser Charles had been correct. He was yielding to the man in the bright blue armour with a white hawk or falcon painted on his shield while you saw Pastorn wielding his long sword still mounted beside you as his own opponent had been knocked cleanly off his horse once again. The way he rode was almost unnatural, as if he had some sort of unspoken bond with his horse.

Your eyes scan to find your opponent and find the griffon knight struggling to get back to his feet as he was attempting to wrench his helmet off of his head. Pastorn reins in his horse beside you and opens his visor and looking at you…

Lord Jon Connington yields

You look over to Pastorn and nod your head. “Let’s finish him while we have the chance.” He closes the visor to his helm and the two of you charge together, you on the left and Pastorn on the right. Lord Jon Connington manages to rip his dented helmet off of his head and you can see that his red hair is made even redder by the blood that stains it from a cut that the steel of his decorative helm had made in his head. He looks up at you just in time to gather his shield once more as you strike and he lifts it up in desperation holding it from both sides exposing vulnerable fingers on the rim. Your hammer strikes dead centre of the shield and such as the force from the blow that the wooden shield splits in two, with only the iron rim maintaining any semblance of shape. Pastorn had timed his own strike well, riding a horse length behind you and instead of using his sword he plants his armoured foot into the now shieldless mans chest in an impressive display of horsemanship and knocks him clean to the ground.

The two of you are quick to press your horses on either side of him and the man yields while looking up at you with a squinted eye as he attempted to wipe away the blood that was leaking from his wound. A squire is quick to rush out to the man to help get him off of the field to prevent any further injury and you look over to Pastorn who uses his sword to point to Ser Creighton who was in a nasty clash with what looked like a dornishman and you move to aid your teammate but by the time you arrive the Valeman had defeated his opponent.

Three of you now remained and you surveyed the tourney field once more. The round was down nearly two thirds of it’s starting number and the field was dwindling. The red team still appeared to have four members and was engaged with the three remaining members of the indigo and blue team that similarly had three. The purple team was down to a single member while the the yellow team had two members fighting back to back on foot against one of your own, Ser Cornelious Rivers as well as the last member of the orange team.

Thank you. In my head I feel like Mervyn sort of reminds Pastorn of Brynden which makes the two of them easy to write getting along.

Not that Mervyn and Brynden are similar characters but they both strike me as relatively down to earth people who are happy to bend the rules to fit their needs Of course Mervyn is downright willing to shatter those rules, but Pastorn hasn't seen that side of him. Add in the fact that Mervyn is older, and is one of the sorts of people (a lowborn shit heel) that Brynden would likely associate with, it just seems to me that the two of them would be a natural fit

Ser Mervyn’s Health: 6

Yourself, Ser Creighton and Ser Pastorn took a brief respite from the action in order to catch your breath and evaluate your next move. You attempted to rub your neck momentarily but scowled away the attempt when your fingers hit your gorget instead of your neck. You breathed deep of the smells of the earth and battle and although it still pained you, you could feel the pain subsiding.

You watched the two yellows manage to defeat their opponents. Ser Cornelious has a deadly looking poleaxe wrenched away from him and he promptly threw up his hands in a yield, meanwhile the man wearing the orange tabard had been struck in the neck by the greatsword of the man in yellow who wielded it. You could see the spurt of blood shoot out from his neck before he fell to the ground as dead as a doornail. Intentional or not, such things happened and for such a reason melee’s were not for the faint of heart. The reds, blue and indigos were still fighting one another fiercely and it appeared to your eyes that each team was now down to two men. Your eyes also found the last of the men wearing purple lingering on the outskirts of the tavern. He looked to be in rough shape and was doing the same as you were in trying to catch his breath and possibly ride out the rest of the round.

You took in one last deep breath before giving Triumph a kick in the flanks and a click of the tongue as you directed him towards the isolated and wounded man on the purple team. Your steed eats up the ground before you and the man charges forth to meet you. You can see Ser Pastorn and Ser Creighton on the edge of your peripherals, giving you enough space to lead the charge and lead the charge you did. You looked to your wrist where Alyssa’s favour was tied and it inspired you to urge Triumph on to even greater speeds. The man was a hedge knight you realized as you got closer. His halfplate was old, plain and worn and he wore a simple helm that didn’t even cover the lower half of his face. He gripped a spear in his hand and wore a small shield on the other but he was injured or fatigued and his guard was lower than it should have been.

Your hammer swings out in a similar manner to how it had for the griffon knight, only this time the mans helmet wasn’t up to the task. The visor gave way before the claw of the hammer and you could feel the secondary “give” of bone and the mans lifeless corpse falls from his horse to dangle grotesquely from the left stirrup as his horse whinnied in panic and took off across the field. A grimace of distaste came across your face but it came more from annoyance than regret. Death was not something you wanted on your hands in this. You had no grudge against the man. Had the situation in life been different you could have even ended up riding alongside the man to this very tournament but all the same he was dead. You prepare to charge once more but before you get the opportunity you hear three blasts from seven trumpets that signalled the end of the round and instead ride Triumph towards the green starting gate as your remaining companions ride in from behind you…

Thank you! As for being on the radar it depends on how you mean? On the radar in regards to Mervyn being a skilled combatant? I'd say a few people have noticed him, not enough to be gunning for him perhaps but enough to ask who he is.

If you mean radar like someone who is going to want revenge, not particularly except for maybe Ser Jonathor's family who you'll get to meet in this next write up. This round was especially vicious and three men lost their lives in it so in that way you're fine.

You’d dismounted nearly as soon as you were through the gate and you found Tyrus waiting with an open hand to take Triumph’s reins as you pulled off your helmet and handed it off to him as well. He soon disappears to take Triumph to a picket line nearby before hastily returning and handing you a cloth to wipe the sweat from your brow. You take the offered cloth and fall heavily onto a stout wooden bench and wipe away the sweat and dust and look upwards to the sky.

“Seven above Ser Mervyn that was a mighty blow Ser. A pity about the mans fate nonetheless.” Ser Creighton commented in between sips from a horn which almost certainly didn’t contain water but instead ale.

Pastorn had joined the two of you on the bench and his young squire was dutifully looking after his master and the man was soon drinking water from a clay cup and he gave you a sad look. “That was a truly masterful showing Ser Mervyn, it is a shame what happened in it’s dying moments stains the glory. I saw you execute the same manouveur against Lord Connington and it was masterfully done. Incapacitate the opponent and force him to remove his helm, making him all the more likely to yield. The strength of your arm must be fearsome Ser, it is ignominious that the quality of a mans steel should mar our otherwise excellent display.”

You shrug your shoulders in your armour. “Accidents happen. By my count no less than 7 men have died on the field already today be it from their lack of skill, the quality of their steel or just plain old bad luck.”

Just as you finish the dead mans horse had been brought about to you by a young boy who could not have been more than eight years old. The horse nothing more than an old rounsey of exceedingly poor breeding, barely fit to pull a plough let alone bear a knight in battle. He went to hand you the reins and you could see tears in the boys eyes.

“ ‘ere Ser. ‘es yours now. Take care of ‘im aright? ‘e might be old but ‘e’s a good ‘orse.”

You give the boy a searching look as you take the old rotting reins in your hand…

No thanks. At least get a squire with a little bit of prestige, even if it's the son of the 4th son of a landed knight. Not the child of a crappy hedge knight.
>>
>>3951069
>>3951076
Mervyn isn't really in the position to take on a second squire as he rather has his hands full with Tyrus, the Loyal Reins and his duties as the Master at Arms. You could probably find one of your men to take him on his their squire though if you want to put in the effort, or if you don't want to it wouldn't be difficult for the boy to find a sponsor at Harrenhal, espcially as he is essentially bringing a packhorse and spare set of armour to sell.

Men die. Train your sword hand and become the better killer.
>>
The boy turns to leave but before he manages to disappear into the crowd you call out to him.

“Boy. BOY! Come on back here.” The young squire turns around and walks back hesitantly with his eyes on his feet and his hands were restlessly moving as he clasped them in front of him. “This was your fathers horse yes?”

The boy gave a small nod with his chin pushed into his chest. Whatever sort of knight his father had been he’d clearly taught his son not to look his betters in the eye. You reach out and grab one of his hands and place the old reins into it and the boy looks up sharply as if sensing a cruel trick of jape.

“You take your fathers horse boy. You have a name?”

“Y-yes Ser. Jonathor Rivers, same…same as me fadder. Only he used to call me Jonny”

“Well Jonathor Rivers, take a lesson from this. I was a boy like you once. My father was also a hedge knight and we travelled about the Westerlands but he too died. It’s what all men do. The only way to try and fight off the stranger is to train your sword arm until it’s better than every man who crosses your path. You have a horse, now that’s more than most boys can say so don’t get yourself robbed now. There must be near a thousand knights here, many of them squireless hedge knights who would be glad for a packhorse, let alone a squire to tend to it. You find one of them and you learn from him understand?”

“Y-yes Ser.”

“Go on then son. Seven be with you.”

You watch as the boy leads his sorry excuse for a horse away and turn back to looks from Ser Creighton and Ser Pastorn. Ser Creighton’s was one of mild surprise while Pastorn’s face showed no emotion whatsoever.

“That was a kindness you did there Ser Mervyn. Even if that nag he has is only good for boiling down to make glue for book bindings. Even the mountain clans that surround my home would refuse to ride that beast. But I suppose they’d use that armour his father wore at the least.” Ser Creighton scratched at his chin. “Well, what say we move to the stands to watch the remaining rounds?”

“I’m with you Ser Creighton. Can’t hurt to watch the competition, and we can see how our fellow greens fare. See what kind of men we’ll be fighting with once we get out of the opening rounds.”

Pastorn for his part remains silent but follows you nonetheless and the three of you are soon seated near the top of the grandstands as you hear the trumpet sounds. The sixth round begins and there was little subtlety in it’s tactics. You saw only a few stragglers deciding to hang back and instead you saw the near full complement of warriors crash resoundingly into one another in the relative center of the arena. Steel rang off of armour and horses screamed as men fought for glory and coin.

--- Ser Mervyn’s Knowledge (Heraldry) Test ---
Rolled 9 vs DC: 6, 9, 12, 15
Result: Passed, Passed, Failed, Failed

The first man to catch your eye is wearing a blue tabard and his helm bore steel antlers as he charged in with a skill at arms and battle fury that struck even yourself as impressive. The shield he bore had a black stag on yellow, and Alyssa’s lessons come flooding back to you in the moment. House Baratheon, the Lords Paramount of the Stormlands. He had forgone the use of a tourney lance and was instead wielding a massive warhammer that a lesser man would have struggled to use two handed, let alone ahorse. The first man who was unfortunate was a man from the yellow team. You didn’t recognize his heraldry for the simple fact that he was knocked clean out of his saddle by Lord Baratheon’s hammer and into one of his teammates who similarly is knocked to the ground by his own man. Following that blow the crowd parted where the Stag Lord went, as a shoal of fish does so when a shark is present.

Another man who distinguishes himself quite well was a man who was clad in bronze armour that was engraved with runes that you could not read. The purple of his tabard had nearly been ripped away by an errant lance strike but he was unaffected. You had remembered the day Allysa had told you about the heirloom bronze armour of House Royce. It was something that had fascinated you, and so by all logic the man wearing said armour was Lord Yohn Royce. It was said he was a fearsome tourney knight and his reputation was proving true. He had unhorse a man with his lance and another with his sword within a heartbeat and soon after a third man was unhorsed. Lord Royce proved especially chivalrous as the third man rose from the dirt and the Lord of Runestone dismounted and went after the man on equal footing.
>>
As for your own green team, by the time the three trumpet blasts sounded only a single man was still standing. His heraldry was that of six silver bells on purple. It rang a familiar bell inside your head but you couldn’t quite remember where the house was from. He had ridden well but had taken a nasty blow to the head and looked to be a tad uneasy on his horse, and you were relieved to see that he rode out towards the green gate and you sent Tyrus to invite him to sit you with you. The man soon follows you and you could see he was a large and brawny sort of man who introduces himself as Ser Marwyn Belmore of Strongsong. He takes a seat next to Ser Creighton and it soon becomes clear to you that he is another Valeman and the field is soon filled with the final round of competitors…

The seventh round however was much more of a divide when compared to the sixth. Three teams had rode directly to the centre while two had rode to the right and the left respectively. Pastorn surveys the field and is quick to point out his fathers bannerman.

“See there Ser Mervyn? The man who just left his horse and is now wielding a greatsword. That is Ser Vance Redward of Redwatch Tower. My father’s bannerman. I learned much of my swordsmanship from the man in my youth.”

Ser Vance was a cautious fighter you could see. He used his weapons reach to keep his foes at bay until an opening presented itself when he attacked with determination abandoning thoughts of defense. His sword had lashed out and caught a passing knight who was still mounted in the chest and when Ser Vance followed up on the attack his opponent was quick to yield. He was however forced himself to yield by a man who bore three oak leaves on yellow bore down on him with his lance and the force of the blow caught him full in the breastplate. You could see even from this distance that the armour was dented.

--- Ser Mervyn’s Knowledge (Heraldry) Test ---
Rolled 11 vs DC: 6, 9, 12, 15
Result: Passed, Passed, Failed, Failed

The Oakheart knight was quick to ascend upon the wounded Ser Vance and upon his yielding the man chivalrously dismounted and helped the man to his feet before remounting with the aid of a squire who ran onto the field before plunging back into the melee. The mans orange tabard was still flaming bright and it appeared as though he had hardly been touched at all.

You saw two men fighting it out each bearing a lion on their shield and soon realize that you were watching Ser Cardyn Lantell and Ser Austin Osgrey fighting one another. They were both still mounted and were wheeling their horses around try to get the better of on another. There was a rivalry between the two men, that much was obvious and besides Ser Art and his veterancy, it was undecided who your true second in command was amongst the Loyal Reins and it seemed the two men were very much taking the measure of each other. It all comes to a head when Cardyn overreaches and Ser Austin brings his sword down on his opponents wrist causing him to lose his sword in his process. Cardyn tries to reach over and pull Ser Austin from the saddle but Austin is to skilled for such a ploy and Cardyn is soon forced to yield. With the thought of lions in your head you find it odd that you hadn’t seen the newest member of the Kingsguard participating and ask after the group if they had heard of any reason why. It was Pastorn who answered…
>>
“He was sent back to King’s Landing almost immediately after his induction if my uncle is to be believed, and he has very little reason to lie. I spoke to him last night after his anger had subsided somewhat and he informed me that Ser Jaime Lannister had been sent to guard the queen back in the Red Keep.”

“How has your family been taking the news then? Not well I imagine.”

Pastorn Malroy looks out into the field with a mild grimace on his face. “That would largely be an understatement Ser Mervyn. My uncle was furious and my father was insulted and was nearly of a mind to leave the tourney all together. Ser Dontos convinced him to stay so as to preserve his honour as he was still a close friend to those of House Targaryen. My elder brother Donold was unimpressed as well. I mean for no offense to you as I’m sure many of the Westerlands were celebrating an appointment of one of their own, but my uncle was robbed Ser. This snubbing reeks of politics. He may be proud to admit as such but any man from the Crownlands could tell you that there was no man more deserving of the honour of joining the Kingsguard than the Black Knight of Malroy.”

“I cannot say such things are my area of expertise Ser.” you confess to the younger man. “Growing up as I do there is little and less to learn of politics. Have you any idea why your uncle was passed over?”

“Nothing but speculation Ser. Although Lord Tywin’s recent abdication of his duties as Hand of the King is a likely connection in some way. Apparently he returned to the Westerlands when the royal party departed King’s Landing for this tourney.”

Now that was a discomforting thought. If Lord Tywin was returning home that would mean a much heavier handed style of leadership than that of his brother Ser Kevan.

Three trumpet blasts interrupt your thoughts however and the opening rounds were concluded. Unfortunately, not a single member of the green team from round seven had managed to hold out. You heard the herald shouting for members of all teams to return to their gates to prepare for the final pool round before the open melee begun in earnest.

Approaching the gate as the group of four you are greeted by another six men which brought your total up to a grand total of ten men. You are soon introduced to one another and the other men consist of Ser Oswell Whent of the Kingsguard, Ser Harrion Fowler of Skyreach, Ser Elliot Mullendore of Uplands, Ser Karth Estren, Ser Miles of the River Road and finally Ser Lestor Langward and with so many voices it was difficult to come up with a single strategy.

All but the most stubborn to listen to Mervyn this time around?
>>
>>3951829
Realistically, to make it that only women/characters who are actually attracted to him be applicable for rerolls. But thats the way the rules are written so I don't want to take that away from you guys because it is quite a powerful benefit.

I also forgot that it's only a single 1 to be re rolled but the first roll is the one that mattered so no trouble
>>

>Any suggestions for tactics/plans for this round? Same as last time? Something new? Feel free to throw your suggestions for Mervyn out there.

So you're saying we're 10? How does the number compare to the other teams?
Horseback combat is Merv's trade, so I'd say same as the last time plus I personally want to steamroll that Oakheart when we spot him whichever color his tabard is.
>>
>>3951833

Red - 13
Blue - 9
Green - 10
Orange - 6
Purple - 9
Indigo - 12
Yellow - 14

>>3951831
>Realistically, to make it that only women/characters who are actually attracted to him be applicable for rerolls.
What of the so called halo effect though? Wouldn't it affect general disposition towards a person with the attractive quality and thus explain why he gets to potentially roll higher on persuasion against anybody?

>>3951836
I gather, Dontos isn't participating in the tournament?

Alright, same as the last time.
>>
>>3951831
I believe there's research that suggests people generally find those that are attractive more trustworthy (whatever the sex). I just find the entire thing amusing. I can't help but think of Mervyn giving the guys a smile with sparkling white teeth and everyone around him thinking "well, shit... the man's got a point" or "fuck this pretty boy bastard", depending on whether we pass the Attractive reroll or not.

I'll also support the same strategy as last time. Strength in numbers and all that.
>>
>>3951827
>Any suggestions for tactics/plans for this round? Same as last time? Something new? Feel free to throw your suggestions for Mervyn out there.
Be pussies. Hang back, pick off stragglers or teams that we outnumber (preferably orange) and only when there's nothing else to do fight in the middle.
>>
>>3951827
Same plan as before.
>>
>>3951898
Good luck suggesting that and keeping 9 other people from running off.
>>
>>3951898
On the other hand I just figured that that Oakheart knight is on the orange team so I can get behind storming them if they appear at the edge of the battlefield.
>>
>>3951902
>>3951900
Orange will want to stay back too, seeing as they're at a serious numerical disadvantage. Charging through the middle is a trap, but hopefully we can get to them.

As for convincing the others, I hope Pastorn and the other guy back us up which should hopefully convince some more people. Chances are that no team completely stays together anyway.
>>
>>3951903
I say we charge at one of the flanks like last time. It wont be seen as total cowardice and it isnt as idiotic as going down the middle.
>>
>>3951827
I would recommend splitting this time. Half go left, half go right and then as we meet in the middle on the opposite side of the arena, form two columns and drive through the center
>>
>>3951838
Oh no. Dontos is definitely participating and let me tell you he is going on a rampage.

--- Ser Mervyn’s Status (Reputation) Test ---
Rolled 16 vs DC: 3, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21
Results: Passed, Passed, Passed, Passed, Failed, Failed

You put forth own voice and speak out loudly into the conversation, loud enough to be as Alyssa would say “uncouth”, and to your own mild surprise you see a large portion of the group turn to look at you expectedly. Perhaps they’d seen you fight in the last round or you were beginning to sound like a noblemen but regardless you had the attention of all but two men. The man who was clad in all white had looked over to you with disdain in his eyes and he simply walked away to tend to his steed. The other man who ignored you was Ser Karth Estren. He was a man of the Westerlands you knew and from the look he gave you he had obviously heard of your previous exploits.

“I will not follow a man who aims to kill in tourneys. Even in Wyndhall we heard about how you slew Ser Herman Swyft. Be warned Sers, for when it comes to the free for all, this bastard will turn on you aren’t like to survive it. He already has blood on his hands today…” Ser Karth Estren joined Ser Oswell in tending his own horse but the rest of the men stayed where they were giving various looks as they waited for you to continue.

--- Ser Mervyn’s Persuasion (Convince) Test ---
Rolled 16 vs DC: 0, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18
Result: Ser Pastorn Malroy (0), Ser Creighton Redfort(0), Ser Miles of the River Road (6), Ser Marwyn Belmore (9), Ser Elliot Mullendore (12), Ser Lestor Langward (15) Passed, Ser Harrion Fowler (18) Failed

“Look at how many we are here now Sers. Eight. Ten if you include the other two. That’s barely more than a single man per round who survived it all. Ser Creighton, Ser Pastorn and myself stuck together and rode as a unit and we managed to come out with three from our group. Another man rode with us but even he managed to unhorse another man and fought until the end of the round. We need to stick together and protect one another. Circle the outside of the field as a unit and knock out any stragglers.”
>>
Ser Pastorn spoke up in defense of the plan. “Why should we all not continue on into the open melee rounds? Ser Mervyn, I’m with you.”

“I’m with you as well Ser.” Ser Creighton raised his cup to you and took a swig from it enthusiastically .

Ser Miles and Ser Marwyn Belmore both nod their heads and walk over to clasp hands with their team mates. Ser Harrion fowler however spits on the ground and instead walks away. “I think not Ser, there is no glory in such an act and we of Dorne, well it is said our blood runs hot. You will find me in the center where the fighting is thickest.”

That left Ser Elliot Mullendore and Ser Lestor Langward. Ser Elliot considered you thoughtfully and nodded, hoisting his butterfly covered shield and taking your hand in his own. His grip was courteously delicate but you could feel the strength behind it, meanwhile Ser Lestor Langward, who’s shield bore a crown of stars on purple and black considered you thoughtfully.

“You’ve quite a band of men here Ser…Mervyn you said correct? I fear it would be a fools errand to turn away the safety of such company for the glory that a team round could offer. I look forward to facing you all in the later rounds Sers, but for now, I am with you.”

Eight men were together, united as a unit. To your immediate left was the purple team and to your immediate right was the red. Across the field were the oranges and yellows and you gripped your new lance tightly as the trumpet sounded once more and the last team round began in earnest…

He wears splint maille and a dirty mud red coat with little else to distinguish him, aside from a shield that bears a red horse on it.

The man is clad in full plate and and his shield is broad. His shield bears eight hanged men on blue and he rides well.

You aimed for the man who was leading the purple teams formation, the man who had eight hanging men on a field of blue emblazoned on his shield. He rode well and he takes notice of you and adjust his line slightly so as to meet together as if you were in a proper joust. Your own lance tip collides fiercely into the mans shield and his shield arm is wrenched backwards at an awkward angle. It may have even been popped out of his shoulder but in the heat of the moment you could not tell. His own blow catches you in the chest and the lance shattered on your shield. The force from the blow rattles you to your core and as you pass by through into the relative open field you were left with a decision as you hefted out your cavalry hammer.

Ser Pastorn had taken the man in the splinted maille and defeated him quite handily. You thought the blow had been a deliberately dangerous one catching the man in the upper chest perilously close to the neck and he had deftly avoided the mans own lance in return. He had been quick to circle back in order to finish the man off.

You’d also seen Lord Yohn Royce place a lance deftly into the shield of Ser Elliot Mullendore and you saw the man fall from his saddle from the blow. His foot had caught in the stirrup and you could hear the man cursing as he struggled to either free himself or gain control of his horse. Unfortunately his horses hoof catches the man in the head during his struggles and his curses go quiet. Whether he was dead or simply unconscious you couldn’t tell but he was most assuredly out of the fight.

You could wheel about and continue the fight with the purple team and hopefully eliminate the five of them, or you could lead your men onwards into the four yellow teams that you saw watching the melee with their guards up…

You turned yourself around in a broad circle and were soon joined by Ser Marwyn and Ser Creighton riding on each of your flanks. You can see that Pastorn was bearing down on the man he’d unhorsed. Surprisingly the man had regained his feet and was hitting his shield with a rather crude looking mace and afoot you could see the man was of a very stocky build, and very likely fat underneath his armour. Your eyes next looked up to see both the knight with the hanging men on his shield as well as Lord Royce turning about to finish the bout. Ser Marwyn is quick to alter his path to take on Lord Yohn and you point to Ser Creighton with your hammer to join him and he nods and rips his sword free from it’s sheathe to join the other two Valemen in combat. No doubt there were some rivalries here that reputations were resting on if the speed of their steeds and eagerness to close with one another was any sign.

You yourself make for the opponent you had likely wounded and could see that his shield was sitting far lower than it had originally and you sought to capitalize on his weakness. You drove your horses towards one another and you swing your hammer with purpose across his body seeking to knock him from the saddle while he aims the point of his sword for the shoulder joint of your armour. The clang that came from the mans armour sounded like a bell ringing while somehow the mans own blow had instead got caught up in your arm. You thought you could feel a small amount of blood beginning to well inside your gauntlet but as you turned to face each other once more you saw your opponent return his sword to it’s sheathe and turn up the palm of his right hand in surrender as he makes for the nearest gate to exit the melee.

Ser Pastorn had left his horse and was currently battering the much wider man with his sword and shield in a clinical display while you saw Ser Marwyn fighting Lord Royce while Ser Creighton was rolling on the ground clasping his wrist which was obviously broken by the yelling of curses across the field…

You dug in your spurs and charged towards Lord Royce, keen to assist Ser Marwyn. You rode by Pastorn and could see he was hammering his opponent as you came crashing to your other team mates aid. Lord Yohn was no green boy however. How he knew you were coming or where you were you couldn’t say but as you approached you saw him bring the pommel of his sword down hard into Ser Marwyns visor hard enough to damage the mans vision slit and Ser Marwyn drops his sword as he tries to fix his equipment leaving him vulnerable. Lord Yohn’s sword then flies out as he wheels his horse about to face you in the nick of time.

Your hammer swings violently towards the mans ancient bronze armour but he brings his iron studded shield in the way. The man grunt in pain from the force of your strike but he used the pain to fuel his own strike and his sword shot forward to catch you in the head in a similar vein of how you had defeated Lord Connington and the attack catches you buy surprise. As Triumph carried you forward it took all of your skill and strength to use your stirrups to maintain your seat in the saddle as you tried to grip your reins while also holding onto your hammer. By the time you regain control of your horse and wheel about you see that Ser Marwyn had surrendered to Lord Royce and the two of you began your clash anew…

And a fearsome clash it was. Sword clashed again shield and black plate armour whilst hammer thundered into studded wood and ancient rune covered bronze. It was a game of positioning as you each tried to gain the upper hand using your legs to control your horses. Finally an opportunity presented itself to you and you stood upright in your stirrups and extended your hammer to bring it crashing down upon Lord Royces head. His shield shoots up to take most of the force from the blow but it is still powerful enough to strike home and give off a satisfying ring.

Standing however had caused you to throw out your shield arm for balance which left you exposed and a veteran such as Yohn Royce was quick to take advantage. He brought the full and considerable might of his sword arm down upon your now exposed leg where the knee joint was weakest. You could feel a sharp and sudden pain where the sword had connected. It had not been enough to truly damage your steel but the armour was thin at the joint and the force had gone straight through the thin metal and you hissed out in pain. This was more than a stinger you knew and if you couldn’t get him to yield you might soon be in trouble for you here.

He had begun to look tired, but you were no different and the two of you were quite possibly equal in ability. You could see Pastorn out of the corner of your eyes nearly sprinting to reach you but would he be able to reach you in time?

While your eyes flicked to the periphery to watch for your teammates coming, Bronze Yohn seixes the opportunity and lashes out with a strike that you manage to catch with your shield just in time. He may have been older than you, but he was nonetheless quicker and he struck like lightning. Perhaps his bronze armour was just lighter than steel, or maybe his runes had some sort of ancient first men magic to them, but regardless you had gotten your shield up only in the nick of time.

You lash out with the spiked side of your hammer which he manages to block with his shield but the claw digs in and you muster the strength to rip the shield away, wrenching it out of his grip and sending it flying towards to ground where it fell with a satisfying slap. You press your advantage but Lord Yohn Royce was almost as effective without his shield using his sword to deftly counter your hammer strikes. He catches one particular blow and using a well struck riposte catches you with a forceful blow to the hand, in particular your fingers and it took a considerable amount of will, as well as a yell of pain, to maintain your grip on your weapon.

That had been the final straw for you. You had pulled back your hammer and pulled his sword out of position before raising it high before bringing the spike down with all of the force that you could muster upon the mans shoulder. Bronze gives way before cruel steel and you can hear his cry of surprise, shock and pain as your weapons finds the meat of his shoulder. You give Triumph a swift kick in the ribs and he is soon off and you tighten your grip on your hammer as you begin to move and Lord Royce is dragged off his horse by the maneuver before being dumped unceremoniously into the mud.

You dismount off of your horse to ensure the man yields but it proves unnecessary.

“I yield Ser, I yield. You have me, and I’ll not have my family’s heirloom in need of greater repair than she needs to be.”
>>
You nod to the man just as Pastorn approaches, nearly out of breath for want of his sprint to attempt to aid you and the two of you begin to survey the field once more when you hear the sound you had been anticipating. The three trumpet blasts finally sound and you can feel your armour weighing heavy upon your shoulders. Every muscle ached, sweat was stinging in your eyes and you were nearly positive you would be losing a finger nail from the last blow of the Bronze Yohn.

The rush of squires onto the field is a welcome sight and Tyrus soon gives you support as you slowly hobble over towards the green gate and he begins to help you out of your armour beneath the green flag once you had found a bench to collapse upon. Both Ser Pastorn and Ser Lestor had survived the round, and both had taken their own fair share of niggling injuries, cuts, and bruises. Pastorn gives you a nod with closed eyes and claps his hand on your shoulder in silent congratulation. You return the favour, both of you too tired to speak at the moment and desperate to get out of your armour you can ill afford the breath to speak. You heard the heralds cry that the open round of the melee would start the days festivities off on the morrow and for that you were thankful. You’d need to see the maester soon, and tonight there would be another feast, as well as a dance afterwards that you had been dreading.

Alyssa had been absolutely electric at the thought of a ball and had been saving her best dress for the occasion, so there was at least that to look forward to you thought. Ser Lestor for his part says nothing to either of you. You were his competition now as far as he was concerned and he would likely do you no kindness on the morrow.

--- Break ---

Alright I’m going to call it hear there guys. I’ll be taking tomorrow off but will be starting it back up on Friday. I’ll leave you guys with this question however until Friday. Keep in mind we’ll start on Friday with a visit to Maester Aethan to get your injuries looked after. The wound however will be sticking with you unfortunately. Also, we can do some ransoms for armour and horses if you guys would like as well. Bronze Yohn should be an interesting one.

--- Anything you guys want to do before the feast/dance tonight? ---

Kek. Would be a shame if something happened to that millennium old tin can!

>>3953409
Indeed.

And all of the above.
Pastorn wanted to meet our lovely lady wife as well as Marqus who isn't a grandfather. Lets invite him over. I'm keen to learn why he is so morose. It is the curse of gay running in the bloodline isn't it?

>Wounds will be with you through most of the tournament
Now this makes me seriously concerned. Wonder how much of the competition will be in similar condition to us (or worse).

We should also check up on our boys Cardyn and Austin. Lets gather some intel too to use during the next round of the melee. Who has been wounded and where, underhanded tactics used and whatnot.
>>
>>3953425
I think we should skip the joust and just focus on the melee
>>
>>3953426
I am not sure they will be intermingled. First the melee, then the joust?..
If we're in fighting shape by the end of the former, then why not? We're lucky and decently skilled (a few ransoms will be a net gain to our own eventual loss). Unless some fucker puts a lance sliver above our gorget

Joe is gone and Father hasnt posted yet and is an hour late.

As for the wounds, only a single man is coming through to the open field without a wound and that is Ser Jonothor Darry of the Kingsguard.

I was thinking it would be inappropriate to invite a lord's son to our feast table, so yeah. We should ask Alyssa what's the best course of action there.
>>
>>3953827
You were right Joe, Father didnt die. He just forgot us. Like being a young boy waiting for our father to come pick us up after football practice in the rain. But he never comes. Alone and forgotten
>>
You looked over at Pastorn and saw he was nearly as fatigued as yourself, slumping in his unadorned but beautiful purple armour as his young squire fussed over him, unbuckling straps and helping his master out of his armour. He wiped away the sweat from his brow and you could see his pitch black hair was wet from exertion and yet his emerald eyes still showed the same look that seemed a permanent fixture on his face and he looked remarkably calm as he shows little excitement at making it this far in the melee. You reach over to clap him on the shoulder and you can feel just how strong he was. A lifetime of martial training had left him lean and hard, and you’d noticed that he was taller than you as well despite his age, something a more boisterous man might have exploited as a joke.

“Come on then Pastorn you might look a bit more cheerful. We continue on in the melee tomorrow, and that’s no small feat. Only us, Ser Lestor over there and that Kingsguard knight made it from the greens.”

He looks over to you and gives you a small, almost tired smile as if it took a large amount of effort and congratulates you in turn. “Yes, I suppose you’re right Ser Mervyn. That truly was well fought Ser I have to say. The way you unhorsed Lord Yohn Royce was most unusual, but highly effective. Your style of fighting is highly effective, if slightly unorthodox.”

“Aye well I wasn’t trained by a Master at Arms, just a bastard hedge knight who taught me that fighting pretty can get you killed.”

That brought forth a small chuckle from the man and he rubs at his ribs and winces from a likely bruise beneath his gambeson.

“Pastorn, I remember you saying that you might like to meet my wife and son. Would you like to join my wife and I for a small meal and some wine before we attend the ball being held tonight?”

His green eyes meet your own and he nods contently, saying how he would be honoured to join you and that he would present himself at your pavilion that evening as he takes his leave, saying that he had a need to return to his own lodgings.
>>
As you made to stand no free of the weight of your armour, you remember how Ser Creighton had been defeated by Lord Royce and turn to your squire who was cursing at himself under his breath as he struggled to load your armour on your cantankerous mule to bring it back to your tent. Mountain, he was named and he was as volatile and irritable as any old man. You heard a bray and then a yell, and when you looked you saw Tyrus nursing what had been a bite on his forearm that he was rubbing furiously. You stopped him before he got within range of your pack animal and instead gave him another task.

“Tyrus, I want you to find the Redfort camp and ask after Ser Creighton Redfort’s well being. Understood?”

“Yes Ser.” He had a look of irritation in his eyes and the look he’d given Mountain was one of utter disdain. You think for a moment he was going to swat the animal on the rump but the old beast stomps one of his rear hooves into the ground and your squire thinks better of the plan, taking off into the crowd leaving you free to go and find Maester Aethan…

You walked amongst the rainbow maze of pavilions through the muddy tracks and are still somewhat blown away by the sheer size of the crowd that bustled in every direction. You saw merchants peddling all sorts of wares, from armour and swords to hot meat and onion pies. You even see a group of gypsy caravans circled up and from there you heard the drone of pipes and the beating of drums as well. You smiled fondly as you remembered your own time amongst the nomadic traders when your father had been hired on by a guard there. You’d been perhaps one and five, and could remember the first girl you had ever lay with in the back of one of the caravans wayns. Tillie had been her name you remembered, a pretty girl who had been of an age with you. You remembered seeing her for the first time and being smitten by her beauty. She’d had sun kissed skin and dark, chocolate brown hair. Her eyes had looked like golden honey in the sunlight and dark pools in the moon.

The two of you had fallen swiftly, and had snuck away to the back of the caravan one night. Kissing led to other things and soon enough you were clumsily exploring each others bodies. Her breasts had been large enough that they poured over your fingers as you squeezed them and when you’d entered her for the first time you had barely managed three thrusts before you’d spilled your seed inside her. She’d giggled at that. You had travelled with the group for nearly a month after that and the two of you had snuck away as often as you could manage. You’d remembered arguing with your father about staying on with them for longer but he’d stubbornly refused and you had ultimately followed the man you called father. There were times you’d wondered if you had fathered a child on your first love. Perhaps one day you would have the resources or means to comb the route that you’d travelled between Riverrun and Lannisport looking for them to find out, but there were more pressing matters at hand now and you shook said thoughts out of your head.

You’d unloaded your armour at your tent and a servant had been quick to retrieve it and take it away inside while ou tied up your mule before heading for Maester Aethan’s own tent. Entering through the flap you found the man poring over a letter with a red seal which he quickly stuffs into his robes when he notices your presence and is quick to sit you down on a high bench and begins to take stock of your injuries…
>>
“Yes Ser Mervyn, did you have a good showing today? Yes? Truly an auspicious day for House Reynold then. Yes, the pressure behind that finger nail will have to be released, and the cut in your arm I can sew. The contusion on the left side of your head I can stitch up as well but…”

He puts forth a single finger and bids you to follow it with only your eyes, and then brings forth a candle close to your face and inspects you carefully.

“I fear that you may be suffering from a mild concussion Ser, or rather, a rattling of your brain inside your skull. I would advise abstaining from all physical activity for at least a weak, although given the circumstances I hardly expect you to follow such advice. If you can avoid it though Ser, further blows to the head should be avoided at all costs.”

--- Maester Aethan’s Healing (Treat Injury) Test ---
Rolled 23 vs DC: 12
Three Degrees of Success
Three Injuries Healed

The dark featured and clean shaven maester runs his hand over his bristling scalp and tuts before rustling through a large chest he’d brought along with him before bringing forth a leather wrap which he unrolls to reveal a startling array of medical tools. The first one he pulls forth looks like a miniature auger and he pulls your hand forth and begins to drill a small hole in the middle of your fingernail. The pressure was enough to case a light exhale of breath from you until all of a sudden a miniature fountain of blood shoots out of the hole that had been drilled and the maester is thorough as he ensures that all of the blood is drained.

Next he offers you a piece of leather to bite down upon as he threads a small hook with some sort of thread and prepares some sort of salve for the cut on your arm. Pouring the concoction on it stings like wild fire, so much so that the pain of the needle threading your skin closed feels like a pin prick by comparison. He finishes up on your arm and does the same to your head and when you remove the leather you can see a perfect imprint of your teeth in the material.

Lastly, he takes a look at your leg after rolling up your britches past the knee and he almost gasps from the bruising that was taking place there. The outside of your knee was black and blue from the bruising given to you by Lord Royce and the maester has little aid to offer apart from a small vial of milk of the poppy which you pocket after thanking the man for his services to which he simply bows and you can hear the soft clinking of his long chain as he does so and you leave by the flap you came in by.
>>
As you round the corner to your own tent, you find a young boy who looked to be about eleven or twelve, clad in bronze with black runes sewn into the doublet. He was small for his age and had dark hair and dark eyes that were common to those of first men descent. He was also beginning to break out in pimples along his jaw line although by the pinkness of his skin around them he was adamant in scratching them. The young boy inquires after whether or not you were Ser Mervyn Reynold to which you respond in kind.

“Aye, I am one and the same.”

“Excellent Ser. My name is Rickard Royce and I have been sent by my unc…by Lord Yohn Royce of Runestone, to negotiate the terms of the ransom of his arms, armour and steed. Are…are you available now Ser?”

“If you will allow me a moment to change out of these clothes Rickard, I will gladly come with you to meet with Lord Royce.”

The boy nods politely and you are soon clambering out of your gambeson and have a servant assist you in putting on fresh britches as well as a simple black doublet with red stitching. You exit out of the tent and allow the squire to lead you on towards the tent of Lord Yohn Royce. It was nearly on the other side of Harrenhal and you were happy for your leather boots that was keeping the mud and water from the thousands of footsteps that was eating up the ground.

The pavilion of the House Royce was impressive. You’d estimated it was at least twice the size of Elleanor and Titus’, and the embroidered runes that covered the bronze coloured fabric was expertly sewn. You walk in and see the suit of ancient bronze armour arranged neatly on a rack alongside a sword of castle forged steel although there was no sign of the Lord of Runestone. A servant brings forth a plate of cheese and cured meats, offering for you to help yourself as well as pouring forth a cup of wine before leaving and you walk over to the side table to sample the wares.

The wine was of a good vintage, likely something grown in the reach you imagined and there was a slight taste of apples or perhaps pears that danced on your tongue. The meats were well salted and complimented the cheese which smelt far, far worse than it tasted. You’d left the pieces with blue veins of mould alone however, focussing on the other pieces. Eventually Lord Yohn enters the room and takes his seat in an extravagantly carved chair at the head of the room.

“Ser Mervyn Reynold. I see young Rickard managed to find you fast enough. You fought well today Ser. I was surprised to having had the better of me gotten by a man whom I’d never heard of and yet here we are. You hail from the Westerlands yes?”

You nodded your head but had little words for the senior lord.

“A man of few words? I can respect that Ser. Straight to business then.”

He gave a small clap and Rickard came forth bringing a small tray with a cloth sack that Lord Royce takes and presents to you. “Here Ser, is 200 Gold Dragons. A fair ransom for my arms, armour and steed I would wager…

>>
>>3955817
You make a good point. Well seems like we may have been screwed here. I will say we discuss things with our wife or someone who knows about these things. And make sure if we run across him. Remind him of this.

I think we know enough to assume the armour is basically priceless to him. It's his namesake after all.
Anons can extort him for however much they want, but we would be burning a big bridge in the process. And countering with anything less than an extortionate price just seems petty. So go big or just take it and come across as a guy that sees the ransoming as more of a formality and cares more about the fighting and glory.
>>
Alright well I can say that Mervyn knows it's an heirloom thats thousands of years old. It's a large part of the reason why he remembers house Royce from Alyssa's lessons. He knows it's worth alot, but as to an actually dollar amount.. no idea.

Some things to consider though.
1. The Vale is a very traditional place where chivalry and honor are valued very highly

2. Lord Royve himself is an honorable man

3. >>3955817 Lord Royce is several rungs higher than Mervyn on the social hierarchy and he may or may not be low balling him because of it.

You guys will have to decide if you think Lord Royce is taking the piss or not. It's a close race so far. Unfortunately I have a splitting head ache that isn't going away even with advil so I'm going to stop writing for tonight unfortunately. I'll give an update in the morning however.

I'll pop a couple times over the course of the evening to answer any questions if there is any discussion

I say we call for 300. A symbolic counteroffer more than anything else - it shows we know the armour has a lot of value to him but also that we're not trying to pull his pants down over the price.

Guys, to be fair, Tygett have us 110. And his shit was gilded out in gold. I think the 200 is fair. But...

Merv should say this

This thing is a priceless family heirloom. And saying we feel remorse about something like that would just be laughable.

We should also offhandedly mention Marqus and ask about his kids. Maybe segue into it by asking about Rickard, squires, and such. >>3956019
I do not think so, we are very far below him on the totem pole.

We are a mere household knight, he is something close to a lord paramount. Best we can hope for from such a discussion, is having marqus squire for one of his knights
>>
>>3956047
I honestly don't expect anything to come of it. I wasn't suggesting we broach the marriage subject anyway since, yeah, he could take it as an insult due to the current status difference. I was just thinking about mentioning we have a son in passing. He can do what he wants with that information. Maybe remember it when we get landed? Maybe pass the information along to his bannermen? Forget it? Doesn't really matter. Just wanted to put it out there since we have the opportunity, and I don't see the harm.

If haven't managed to come up with such a medicine in the 21st century then I doubt they've got one in Westeros.
Arguably you could use a tea of willow bark (aspirin) to take the edge off the pain but given it also impedes blood clotting probably best not.

For what it's worth, that is definitely something Alyssa would have done. Hell she might have even suggested giving him back his armour for free for fostering a second son if she has one. She may be more ambitious than Mervyn in her own way and she wants her sons to have the same opportunities that her nieces and nephews (all sons and daughters of lords proper so far) but Mervyn...Mervyn isn't quite such a big picture guyyet

You walked over to the armour on the stand and ran your finger over one of the runes in a delicate matter. If the histories spoke true then this suit of armour was older than many of the noble houses that ruled over Westeros.

“They say that this suit of armour is thousands of years old if I remember my histories. I also remember that there was supposed to be some sort of magic in the runes, magic to make it’s wearer immune to injury and defeat. Lord Royce, is there any truth in that?”

The Lord of Runestone gives a gruff bark by way of reply. Whether it was a laugh or mark of scorn you could not tell but the middle aged man stands from his seat and walks over to where you yourself stood and thumbed the damage in the armours pauldron.

“House Royce possesses six suits of said armour Ser, all varying in age from the days of the Bronze King’s to a mere 800 years ago when the last suit was found by a Ser Reginald Royce while rooting out mountain clans from our lands. The scum had holed up in an old barrow and Ser Reginald had flushed them out and found the armour buried beside some old wildling king. This armour though…” He says while gesturing towards the armour that now stood in front of you. “This armour belonged to King Robar II, the last Bronze King. Perhaps the oldest of our heirlooms possesses some sort of magical qualities but as shown by my defeat today…this one has no such power.”

“A king’s armour you say? Well it is certainly beautiful armour I have to say. The bronze and black is rather striking. I can only hope that one day my own family might come into possession of an heirloom worthy of keeping for thousands of years. Would you not say that a King’s armour might not be worth a higher price than 200 golden dragons Lord Royce?

The man bristles like a boar. He had gone grey prematurely which gave him an older, dignified look than his perhaps forty years would have and he stares at you with a scowl from which eyes as grey and enduring as the mountain smolder at you.

“If you think for a single moment you’ll be walking out of this tent with my families ancestral armour I”

You interrupt him quickly before his anger can fully manifest itself. “My Lord of course I don’t mean to steal your families heirloom. Only that I don’t wish to be taken for a fool my Lord. My father always taught me that a mans first offer is never the final price of something.”

Lord Yohn’s scowl lessens slightly as he casts a raised eye brow at you. “Your father sounds like a shrewd man Ser.”

“He was a hedge knight my Lord, if they don’t haggle they are like to be poor.”

“I see. That explains why you talk like you’re half a damn peasant. Yet you are now a member of a noble house, a young one yet, but with roots as old as my own if I remember my own lessons from my boyhood. Alright Ser, what value would you place on my families heirloom and history?”

“Perhaps three hundred dragons my lord? Enough so that I can say I haggled with a high lord, and low enough to hopefully not cause offense to said lord as well.”

“Did your father teach you to flatter your betters as well as to haggle?”

“No m’Lord, that would be my wife, Lady Alyssa Reynold of Ember Peak.”

“Well she taught you well enough Ser. Three hundred dragons Ser.”

Rickard Royce disappears into the back of the impressive tent leaving you and Lord Yohn alone for a moment.

“You fought well today my Lord. I have to say that if Sers Marwyn and Creighton had not worn you down our fight may have taken a very different turn.”

He gives another gruff bark which you now took for a laugh. “Aye Belmore gave me a fight well enough I suppose. Certainly more than his elder brother Benedar is like to give me, sack of suet that he is. And Ser Creighton is a drunk. He would be a much more impressive knight if his father could curbs his sons excesses.”

Arrogant like the lot of them, at least this one has the lineage to base it on.
By way of description it didn't strike me as if we acquired any warrior respect with lord Royce by besting him.

>>3956569
Pretty much this.
>>
>>3956580
The difficulty of overcoming ones birth in Westeros. Hell, even if Mervyn get's landed, houses like the Royces, the Conningtons and even the Rowans are still likely to look down on him simply because his status. The fact that Marqus will likely end up fostering in Goldengrove is a huge boon that's almost unheard of for a man of his birth and is really only due to Alyssa and her family ties. The only canon one I can think of is Littlefinger fostering at Riverrun.

I will say that Yohn Royce respects Mervyn's skill at arms, but not enough to get them on friendly terms. The Royces of Runestone are too old, proud and well born for such a thing.
>>
An awkward silence filled the air and you took it as a sign to take your leave. You wished Lord Yohn a good day as well as luck during the joust in the following days.

“I shall hope to find you in the lists my Lord.”

“Likewise Ser. I would be glad for a chance to redeem myself against you. Good day Ser.”

You left the tent of Lord Royce and made for your own through the same path that the young Rickard had taken you by and when you come to your own pavilion you find two knights and a young boy, once again likely a squire clad in red and white.

The first man to introduce himself is an older knight, perhaps of an age with Lord Royce but he had yet to fade to grey. You recognize him by the pin on his blue surcoat which was a small man hanging from a rope made of black iron. He politely introduces himself as Ser Trevor Trant, Knight Commander Whitestone Keep and Captain of Lord Emmerst Earp’s Cavalry.

The next is the poorer looking man, likely a hedge knight himself by his clothing. He had brought his horse as well as his armour and shield and you remember the screaming pink demon on the mans shield. His name was Ser Maluss Nightblade, and introduced himself simply with his only title being Ser.

Lastly the young boy pipes up, introducing himself as Perkins Penrose, Page to Lord Jon Connington, The Red Griffon and Lord of Griffon’s Roost. He, like Lord Royce, offered an invitation to meet with Lord Connington to negotiate terms…

Ser Maluss was hesitant to enter the tent as he was holding his horse by the reins. “Ser if it’s all the same to you I would simply just pay you here and now.” He presents to you a small stack of 7 golden dragons, dropping the coins one by one into the palm of your hand with a satisfying clink. “It ain’t much Ser but it’s all I’ve got.”

You stared at the man with unbelieving eyes. “Ser Maluss I was a hedge knight once too I’ll have you know, and I think we both know if I look in the bottom of your saddle bags there will be more coin. I am not trying to rob you, I only want what is mine. You steed is worth three, your armour at least nine. Combined with your sword and shield I would wager that 12 dragons is more to the mark.”

“Yer more’n welcome to look through my saddle bags Ser. Please. Be my guest.”

“If not in your saddle bags then perhaps sewn into your gambeson then?”

His eyes give away the truth and he looks away from you before pulling forth a dagger and cutting five small nicks into the individual squares and pulling forth the additional five golden dragons and handing them over to you, before sulking away with his head down, soft curses on his tongue. He would likely try his hand at the joust once it was underway but it would be a risky proposition to the man should he not manage at least one victory.

Ser Trevor Trant on the other hand enters the tent graciously and you offer the man some wine which he takes with a nod and a thank you. It was something you’d seen most lord do in these negotiations and while your own wine may have been a fair sight poorer than arbor gold the gesture was what mattered.
>>
“Ser Trevor Trant, it is a pleasure to meet you. My name is Ser Mervyn Reynold. You fought well today Ser.”

“Thank you Ser, as did you. You fight like the warrior himself. I imagine you could even give my lieges personal champion cause to worry.”

“Speaking of your liege Ser, I am not well versed in the heraldries or histories of noble houses. From where does House Earp hail?” Ser Trevor took a small sip of the wine before he continues.

“House Earp hails from the Mountains of the Moon, their seat is known as Whitestone Keep, or simply the Whitestone. They are an old house, and they produce the finest silver in the Vale.”

“A wealthy house I imagine? That would explain the quality of your armour yes?”

He wore a suit of plain, but extremely well made plate that was coloured a deep navy with black leather straps and fittings. “Yes, and no Ser. My Lord Earp, he…well it is not my place to speak ill of my lord. Either way, what Ser Maluss attempted outside was the act of a scoundrel and you will get no dishonesty from me Ser. The Trants of Gallowsgrey are an honourable family and although I no longer call Gallowsgrey my home, that is still where I hail from and shall not dishonour my name. I come offering you 35 golden dragons Ser. 30 for my armour and arms, and five for my steed.”

He pulls a purse from his belt and hands it to you. “I appreciate your chivalry Ser, and I accept your offer. Whitestone Keep must be a place of honour to have a Knight Commander such as yourself.” The man gives a small grimace but keeps mum all the same, thanking you for the wine and taking his leave, leaving you free to attend Lord Jon Connington. Perkins Penrose had taken you to Lord Connington’s pavilion which rivalled the splendour of Lord Royce, and the red and white griffons counterchanged on the two flaps that served as a door.

You are soon introduced as Ser Mervyn Reynold of Ember Peak, before Lord Connington himself stands from his seat and introduces himself…

Lord Connington’s eyes widen when he looks over in your direction but he quickly blinks it away as he strolls over with an air of confidence as he shakes your hand. “Ser Mervyn. The Black Eagle I heard some men say when they spoke of you. You are quite the man. Seeing you in the flesh makes my defeat at your hands slightly less embarrassing.” The handshake had gone on for perhaps a second to long, and the mans grip upon your upper arm was enough to make you just slightly uncomfortable.

“Thank you m’lord. You fought well yourself.”

“Not so well as to continue on I’m afraid. I believe the only option left open for me to gain glory here is the joust, and for that I must needs have my armour as I’m sure you well understand. So, to business I suppose. Please, sit Ser Mervyn.” Lord Jon takes his own seat and leans backwards, his red hair mixing with the red fur of a fox that trimmed his cloak. You could see a cut on the mans cheek where his visor had crumpled in on him and his pale blue eyes studied you carefully.

“I shall be willing to pay you fifty gold dragons for the entirety of my possessions which are now lawfully yours. What say you Ser?”

You looked up at him and watched him in return, trying to judge if the man was playing you false but you knew that he was. Your own armour was worth fifty dragons, and when combined with a horse and arms sixty dragons would be a healthy sum. Lord Jon Conningtons armour was of an excellent make, it’s red and white enamelling was the mark of an expert craftsman, and the mother of pearl and ruby griffons that battled on his breastplate were the sign of wealth. His horse had been a magnificent destrier, black as night and powerful.”

--- Ser Mervyn’s Persuasion (Bargain) Test ---
Rolled 13 vs DC: 12, 15, 18
Results: Passed, Failed, Failed

Why did every nobleman born with a wetnurses teat in their mouth seem to think that you were some fool, as if a man of your birth or station could not recognize the value of a set of armour. Or maybe it was the fact that they thought that they might be able to get away with paying you less than the armour was worth because of their rank. You think said thoughts in irritation but manage to not let it show upon your face.

“My lord, I’m no fool. My own armour and steed are worth at least sixty dragons, and your armour is enamelled and decorated beautifully, while your steed is a destrier. So while I’ve never ridden on such a steed I know they fetch a far higher price than a courser such as my own.”

Lord Jon Connington gives you a shrewd smile and calls for wine and takes a seat at a small table to the side of the main room where there were two beautifully carved chairs. He lounges while he waits for the wine and gestures for you to join him. “So tell me Ser, are the rumours I’ve heard true?”

“Rumours?” You knew little and less of any rumours that concerned you.

“I’ve been led to believe that you are a most dangerous man Ser, and from your showing today I’m most certain of that. But did you truly slay a “Ser Herman Swyft” in single combat? At a wedding no less?”

Your face became guarded and neutral. Alliances and friendships amongst the nobility often transcended boundaries of geography as noble houses fostered children with each other. “Ser Herman Swyft…did fall as a result from our duel.”
>>
Lord Jon shakes his head and gives a small look of approval. “So Ser Humphrey told the tale true I see. It was all he spoke of my teammate from the West. Ser Humphrey Swyft his name is, although I know not if the two of you are acquainted. The Black Eagle of Ember Peak, a lowborn devil who murdered his cousin to hear him tell of it.”

You could feel a flush of heat inside your chest and a prickling of the hair on the back of your neck as your temper began to flare. “I am sure the man forgot to mention why the “Black Eagle” did what he did, and left out the chickens own part in the matter.”

That illicited a laugh from Lord Connington as the wine finally comes. “Yes I fear that may be a common trait with that family. Please do tell Ser.” He gestures with the cup of wine as his pale blue eyes stare at you expectingly.

“The man insulted my wife, call her honour into question among other things, at my goodbrothers wedding no less. Needless to say, he could not back up his words with skill.” Lord Connington deflates slightly at that last comment but regains his composure quickly and gives you a polite bow of the head.

“I am sure your lady wife is a lucky woman to be wed to such a gallant and fearsome knight. Now, back to our more pressing concern at hand. I will pay you a fair an honest price of 70 gold dragons Ser.” He snaps his fingers and a servant soon enters to hand you the coin and Lord Connington soon begs your leave to attend to other matters and you are escorted out of the pavilion and you headed back towards your own.
>>
You throw open the flap and you are greeted by the sight of Alyssa and Cerenna playing the gracious hosts to Ser Pastorn Malroy, who was himself holding your son who was sitting on the mans lap babbling happily as he grasped Pastorn’s hand with both of his own and was trying to pull the mans signet ring into his mouth. Alyssa and Pastorn look and turn to you and smile in their own way, Alyssa’s was broad and beaming as she welcomed you, while Pastorn’s was a polite, but subdued smile. Cerenna for her own part nodded politely but her attention was soon back on Pastorn.

“Mervyn you did not tell me that we were expecting a guest. Why I came back to find Ser Pastorn waiting patiently outside and myself and Cerenna without having any time to properly prepare ourselves. You might have given us some warning husband.” You turned up your hands as way of apology and gave her a half guilty smile. “I hadn’t time to come find you after, although I figured Tyrus would be back to tell you in time. Has he not returned?”

Alyssa shakes her head which gives you pause for a moment but you instead join your family and acquaintance at the table and Alyssa is quick to try and involve you in the conversation. “Ser Pastorn you must have a gift with children. I’ve never seen Marqus behave to calmly being held by a man aside from his father. Wouldn’t you agree Mervyn?”

You answer by the way of a shrug and your wife scowls at you, playfully, but there was a hint of annoyance in her eyes as well. “Surely you’ve seen how he struggles and squirms when my father or Tygon tries to hold him. That Ser Pastorn can hold him it all his shocking, let alone how happily he staying with you.”

“Pastorn looks up from Marqus and gives a soft smile and cocks his head to the side as if to say that he didn’t know the first thing about children. “I cannot say as to why my lady, I think this may be the first time I’ve ever held one so small. My home has seen no small children since I myself was born. My brot…” His talk soon trails off and instead he places his hand on the top of Marqus’ head and strokes his soft red hair softly…

--- Any questions/small talk for Ser Pastorn Malroy? ---
I think for open prompts like this I’m going to allow for a number of questions equal to Mervyn’s persuasion rank, so for now it will be three.
>>
>>3961057
Ask him if he could help us strike a deal with his house to get some horses
>>
>>3961057
With a conspiratorial wink to Alyssa we should say it sounds about time his home started seeing children
>>
>>3961057
Oh and ask him about his family. He said his brother would be at the joust while the other was not attending, what could we expect.

Also ask if we could meet Dontos. The famed Black Knight of Malroy
>>
Pastorn is such a great guy, Young Brynden did not deserve him
>>
>>3961085
Would you mind elaborating on that a little further? Do you mean that the family should visit Steadhold? That Pastorn should get married? Or that Marqus should foster there? Just want to get the facts straight.

>>3961161
Well he isn't perfect. He certainly has his own flaws that hopefully Mervyn can unveil
>>
>>3961213
Think he is refering to Ceranna who is crushing on Pastorn
>>
>>3961213
>>3961214
Yes, precisely. Just general playing up a potential match
>>
Joe gone or just slow?

if so i may as well head to bed
>>
Damn she's real slow today. Well I'll let this go overnight in that case.

Not that >>3961214 and >>3961223 don't have good ideas, I just want to let a few more people voice their opinions before going ahead with this.
>>
Maybe ask him that if he thinks about having kids on his own in the future
>>
>>3961057
"So did your family find out any more of the politics that caused your uncle to be snubbed? If you consider him so much above you he must be fearsome indeed."
>>
Ask after his brother and uncle, and of their related success or failure during the Melee thus far. Surely the Malroys are proud of their success thus far. Rumors about Ser Dontos have surely reached Mervyn's ears by now and he would like to have the best advantage against him he can.

Mervyn playing match maker tickles me and even he notices that Cerenna is lustinf after him. Women always like the quiet sad ones, think they can fix him up. Anyway, ask him about the favor and jest that it must have brought him good luck. See if we can spur this in the right direction. If it continues along well enough eventually we could invite him to the westerlands so that he may court her properly and attend a tourney or melee for funsies.

Lastly I agree about asking after his family's famed horses. We saw how devastatingly skilled Pastorn rides and as much as we can attest that to his own skill the horse and breed themselves are something beyond our own. We'd do well to outfit the Loyal Reins in such and benefit greatly ourselves from such a fine mount. Asking if he can arrange a meeting with his father, since we know they have some here and will be pricier and even more sought after following the joust we should try to get in early.
>>
Alright cool. So to sum things up here.

1. Ask after possibly acquiring some horses for the Reins, potentially meeting with his father if necassary.

2. Ask about his family, specifically after successes in the melee so far.

3. Ask about the favor/keep playing match maker

Alright cool. Writing!

“You’ve mentioned your brother a few times Pastorn. Tell me, how did he fair in the melee? As a matter of fact, how did your uncle fair as well?”

The man looks glad for the change of conversation and shifts in his seat, moving Marqus from one leg to the other as he turns more to face you. “My brother, Ser Donold, he was eliminated in his own opening round by a Ser Lorcan Lydden I believe. Meanwhile my uncle, Ser Dontos, he has made it quite handily to the open round on the morrow.” Pastorn looks about from side to side with his eyes, as if looking for someone who wasn’t there. “I have to warn you Ser, my uncle seems to have taken umbrage with the men of the West and is on a personal vendetta to defeat any man he can find who calls Lord Tywin Lannister his liege.”

“I’ll take it that has something to do with Jaime Lannister taking his place in the Kingsguard?” Pastorn gives you one of his solemn looks and nods his head softly. “In truth, I do not blame him Ser, my uncle is a proud man and to lose out on his life’s ambition to someone who is yet more a boy than a man. I only tell you this as a warning that come the morrow, I would not be surprised if he were to come looking for you Ser.”

You nodded your head and scratched at your blonde beard with two fingers. “I don’t suppose you have any advice on how to best go about fighting him?

Pastorn takes a moment to ponder the question before answering. “My uncle is an honourable man, so you need not fear any underhanded tricks. He fights defensively, and uses his prodigious skill to his advantage. He’ll likely attempt to frustrate you and keep you at a distance, waiting for his opponent to make a mistake. Then, he’ll strike and Ser, it feels as if you are getting kicked by a horse. I of all people would know.”
>>
“I imagine any man with a horse on his banners ought to know what getting kicked by a horse feels like. Although I have to say that you ride as if you and your horse could speak to one another. It’s remarkable to watch Ser.”

Pastorn humbly plays down the compliment. “It is only from years of practice, and as you say, a horse is on my fathers banners. He was very insistent on all of his children learning how to ride as soon as we were able. There was an old saying in my family, something along the lines of “They are our dragons”. My family hails from Valyria, although we were never dragonriders, but instead rode horses. My nine times great grandsire served at Dragonstone as the Master of Horses.”

“I can see why, if his skill is anything like your own. Tell me, if I was of a mind to purchase some of these horses, would you be able to help me with such a thing?”

“Well that would depend on how many you wished to purchase, and what standard of horses in particular Ser Mervyn. My father brought a selection of steeds to showcase and sell to various people. If you wish to purchase horses for your men, I could speak with our own Maester who has been put in charge of the sales by my father, but if you wish to purchase a steed such as my own for yourself, you will likely need to arrange a meeting with my father. I will give you a warning though Ser, Malroy steeds of the Valyrian Bloodline do not come cheaply…”

The extraordinary courser gets an extra dice in agility, as well as an extra bonus die in strength. Plus various things that don't have an affixed crunch value like reputation with various lords and knights who might recognize the horses.
>>
>>3962702
Ugh that is pretty good... I'm going to stick with neigh because we would still get a minor upgrade in horse. I won't be disappointed being broke sitting atop the magnificent Valyrian steed though. That's provided Merv can even convince him to sell one. That might be difficult considering the slight to his brother.

This is essentially just organizing a meeting with Lord Vamos if you want to purchase the extraordinary, as he isn't someone you just call on and expect a visit without an invitation. Pastorn will do the leg work for you there if it's the route you guys take.

As for the horses, that will be it's only small negotiation between yourself and Pastorn, but needless to say you won't have to worry about not being able to pay your own ransom should you fall in the melee.
>>
Well looks like an affirmative yay on the superior coursers, and it's a tie on the extraordinary.

I'll go with telling Pastorn to at least organize a meeting with Lord Vamos because it doesn't actually lock you down into spending the coin. Seem fair enough?
>>
>>3962885
Ye sure
>>
>>3962885

>>
“Well Pastorn, I can certainly say that the Loyal Reins would benefit from such steeds. If you would organize the sale of a units worth with your maester, I will put aside the coin from my ransoms today to purchase them. As for the Valyrian steeds you speak of, perhaps you might arrange for a meeting with your father then?”

“I can certainly speak with Maester Benjin, and I make no promises in regards to my father but I can most definitely ask for a meeting between the two of you. He has been quite industrious, hosting various riverlords as he attempts to find a suitable bride for Donold, his heir, as well as any other lords with children suitable to arrange marriages for Isis and I.”

You turn to Alyssa and give her a look. “Perhaps you might speak to Ser Tyrion on Cerenna’s behalf Ally? After all that favour you’ve been wearing seems to be working alright for you Pastorn.” The words leave your mouth as a ribald jest, but no laughter comes forth. Cerenna has gone nearly as pink as a sunset, and quietly begs her leave as she tries to cover up her blushing cheeks. Alyssa stood to go after her handmaiden but not before looking back over her shoulders and shooting daggers back at you. Lastly, you turned to Pastorn and saw that his face had gone very neutral and he looked about anywhere else to try and avoid your gaze.

“Is everything alright Pastorn? I didn’t mean to embarrass the Lady Cerenna, or cause any offense.” His lips tighten into a thin line as he meets your gaze and for once his eyes show emotion instead of the cool disregard that normally resided there. It was the look of resentment. Not quite hatred, not quite sadness, just the look of a man who resented the position that he was in.

“Everything is fine Ser Mervyn, although I fear I have lost my appetite. I shall see you and your wife at the feast. Please tell her I am honoured to have met her Ser. You did not exaggerate, she is a lovely woman.” He stood and bowed slightly before making his way for the door…

>>

And you think its related? That he is resentful because he can't live a normal life? To me it seems like something deeply rooted in his character, originating from earlier times.

And you watched him as he left the tent. It wasn’t in a huff of prickly anger such as that of your squire, or even the dignified way which Tygon would carry himself out of the situation. It was something unique to the young man, a quiet smouldering anger that he tried to contain, almost as if trying to remove a candle from a pile of nearby kindling. It was at that point that Alyssa came fuming back to the main chamber.

--- Alyssa Reynold’s Knowledge (Education) Test ---
Rolled 22 vs DC: 15, 18, 21
Result: Passed, Passed, Passed

“What in the Seven were you thinking Mervyn?! We may have helped to arrange a marriage between Ser Austin and Jennifer Garner, but this is an entirely different beast. The Malroys of Steadhold are a powerful house of the Crownlands Mervyn, equal in status to my own Lord Father and Lady Mother. That is absolutely NOT a family where someone like you can suggest organizing a marriage, especially between someone such as Cerenna. House Lantell is only a knightly house for Seven’s sake, a rich one I’ll admit but still not an appropriate match given that Pastorn is now in the position of a second son.”

You gave her a sheepish smile by way of apology and she walked forward to take Marqus from your arms and puts him on her hip while she stares in your direction. “What do you mean he’s in the position of a second son?”

“While I was watching the melee today I happened to be sitting next to a Lady who was a member of the court of Sweetport Sound, the home of House Sunglass. I inquired to her about your teammates and she told me of a second son of House Malroy by the name of Brynden, who was betrothed to a daughter of Lord Sunglass. But something went amiss, and said brother went into exile across the Narrow Sea. So now, Ser Pastorn has likely taken up the mantle of the second son, and if his facial expression was anything to go by it is something he resents. He likely grew up thinking that he might be living a very different life than where he currently finds himself.”

“Well….fuck.”

Alyssa’s eyes widen again and she goes to cover Marqus’ ears. “Mervyn. Watch your language. I can’t believe that I was going to congratulate on convincing the man to ask Cerenna for her favour. Acting subtly as you did is something worth doing. If the man fell for her he might petition his father on his own accord. Then again, he might not. His heart may belong to another entirely it’s hard to say. But on no account should you mention the prospect of marriage to the man again. Poor Cerenna nearly died of embarrassment. I’ll most likely need to coax her into attending the ball tonight now.” Your wife crosses her arms as much as she is able with a babe in her arms before telling you that you’d might as well get ready yourself and that she would soon be preparing for the ball as well.
>>
She stalked off to join Cerenna and left you alone as you began to change into your courtly raiment. Tyrus soon enters the tent and you can see that he has a bloody lip and had a bruise coming in over his left eye. You stared at him with a raised eye brow and he gave you a bloody smile. “Ser Creighton Redfort sends his regards. He won’t be competing for the rest of the tournament Ser. Maester says he has some broken bones and the maester of the Redfort has put him on bedrest.”

“Anything to worry about?” You gestured towards his face and the fourteen year old shakes his head. “Just a few a squires who thought that they found an easy target Ser. I showed ‘em otherwise.”

You shook your head and sighed heavily. “Go and clean yourself up Tyrus, and then come back and help me don these damnable clothes. I don’t feel like getting blood on them.”

“Aye Ser. Will do.”

Alright, I'm going to call it here for tonight. I'll resume tomorrow at 12PM/Noon with the ball. Dancing, some politics, Tygon perhaps? Isis?

Don't we get to use some funds from the house for using it on the house calvary? Cause I mean shit if I remember correctly if we were to ever stage a coup. The archers would be on our side as they said. And clearly the calvary is with us.
Even if it was to just kill off Titus or someone in a battle don't think too many people would argue with the way we rememebr it.
>>
>>3963807
If you guys want to approach either Titus or Elleanor about getting back house funds you are free to do so. They each have their reasons and ways they can be convinced to get various amounts of wealth back. Anywhere from 100 to 400 gold dragons depending on who you choose to see and how a persuasion test turns out.

Fuuuuck. Idk why I didn't figure it out initially. And no idea why I previously assumed the second (third) son to be a match for a knight's daughter.

So here's my guess. Pastorn was denied (directly or indirectly by his upbringing) his lower born love interest and we reminded him of it. Lets hope it wasn't a handsome blond stableboy.

Who's the master race?
>>
The feast had finished and a multitude of servants had come forth to clear a large number of tables and chairs away leaving a large clearing in the Hall of One Hundred Hearths. You had arrived after the feast had concluded, arm in arm with your wife clad in her stunning red and black dress and you in your grey and black doublet and hose, black leather boots and wearing your wedding ring glinting on your ring finger. It was shocking to you how comfortable your clothes were, all made from silk and other expensive materials that you couldn’t name. Your ruby eagle broach clasped your long, black wolfskin cloak behind you as you and your wife began to search for the rest of her family.

Cerenna was actually the one who spotted them first and she tapped your wife on the shoulder as she follows her handmaidens finger and she then pulled you along to where the entirety of the Reynold family was sitting. Elleanor and Titus were sitting together on a bench with perhaps six inches between them. Close enough to suggest a unified house to the outside world and yet far enough apart as to prevent them from touching one another. A small boy you would have to guess who would be ten years old was sitting besides Elleanor and it takes you a brief moment to recognize him as Titus and Elleanor’s youngest son, James. He was a thin boy, and small, and was a personal squire to Lord Mathis Rowan. Elyse was present as well, standing beside her husband, Ser Gordon Serrett. He had his arm around her and they seemed to be enjoying one anothers company. Elyse’s dark brown hair stood out in stark contrast to the rest of the Reynold brood of either red or blonde, but she still possessed the classic sea green eyes that were so common to the family, as well as having Elleanor’s cheeks and nose.

At his fathers right hand sat Tygon, next to his heavily pregnant wife Andrea Brax as they waited for the festivities to begin properly. They made a handsome couple, what with Tygon resembling his father before time and feasting had turned him fat, with long blonde hair and hazel eyes that almost turned a golden yellow when the light shined upon them, and a smile that glinted with actual gold on account of his golden replacements. Andrea for her own part was classically beautiful, and when sitting was nearly of a height with her husband although that disappeared when they stood. She had pale skin that was framed by dark brown hair and her eyes had the classic amber colour of those of first men descent. As Tyrus joined them, lip sewn and eye bruised, the only person missing from the family was Joanna. She, as well as the Farman Household had remained on Fair Isle after the events that had taken place during the wedding between her and Lord Farman’s son.
>>
Music soon begun to filter through the crowd as Lord Walter Whent and his wife, Lady Shella began to dance alone to a slow and elegant song that you didn’t know. Their movements were smooth and practiced and as the song came to it’s end a polite round of applause came about. Alyssa gave you a quick elbow to the ribs to get you to clap along and the music soon continued and lords and ladies began to flood the floor to begin an elegant dance to yet another song you didn’t know.

This wasn’t the environment you were comfortable with. You’d grown up singing diddles and bawdy songs, stamping your feet and clapping your hands. Seven hells, you could even play a pair of spoons into the ground. The shuffling of feet and interlocking of arms was the kind of dancing you knew, not whatever this was. Eventually though, a song you recognize as one of Alyssa’s favourites, the “Flowers of Spring” is played and she looks to you and you groan as she drags you out into the dancing crowd. You placed a hand upon her hip and took her own hand in yours and you danced. Your feet followed hers and she half smiled at you as she leads the dance and leans into you.

“Oh husband, there are so many things I have yet to teach you. Perhaps all those rumours that were spread about you were true? Nothing more than a rough hewn hedge knight who came to steal away an innocent young noble girl. What would the singers say?” She smiled demurely at you and you smiled back. A sharp pinch from her nails dug into the back of your hand however. “Don’t think I’m still not upset at how you embarrassed Cerenna, but I’ll not be denied the chance to dance at the largest tourney in living memory because my husband is a crude and uncultured man who stole his wife from higher born men.”

This was pillow talk you knew, but she was also clearly still annoyed. Alyssa often liked to pay the innocent girl, although she was normally less specific with her wording. As the song finishes you lead the two of you back to the benches and she curtsies to you politely. “Thank you Mervyn. Brother, would you care to dance?” She extends an arm to Tygon who stands and takes her hand properly and soon enough the two of them are dancing expertly as you looked about to your available companions.

And I like the idea of our men knowing we are the one solving all of their issues.
Only reason I would say get the money from eleanor would be to drain her personal funds. So she has less resources to retaliate with if we are going to full on betray her. But even then she would likely just pull the funds from the houses stash and not her own.

>Lady Elleanor Reynold

You approached the table and bowed slightly before the Lady of Ember Peak and she gestures for you to join her by gently patting the empty space on the bench as she watches the merriment. “Ser Mervyn, please join me for a moment. I have to congratulate you on your success in the melee so far. I have heard House Reynold mentioned by a few noble born persons.”

“Thank you m’lady. I’ve heard a name being spoken of myself from a Lord Jon Connington. “The Black Eagle of Ember Peak” to hear him tell it. Apparently a few men from the Westerlands have been spreading tales about me.”

Elleanor utters a short and contemptuous laugh while a smile creeps onto her austere and noble looking face. She was clad in a dress of grey and yellow, as equally fine as that of Alyssa but much more traditionally cut and she sat with such poise that she might have been a queen for all you knew. “I imagine that it will be some lick spittle from House Swyft that is spreading such rumours. Take pride in them Ser, it is not a bad thing to have a dangerous reputation. The Seven above alone know that House Reynold is in need of better men about her…” She glanced out into the crowd and saw Lord Titus dancing with a girl wearing blue and white, and based on the resemblance of the two and the silver lion sewn into her dress you would hazard a guess that she was a cousin or a niece. Lord Titus was actually a rather skilled dancer despite his bulk, and spun and weaved about the girl rather impressively while Elleanor only scowled. You decide to break the tension by mentioning her talks with the King.

“My lady have you…have you spoken with the King?” She turned and her mood had changed in a flash as her eyes took on a different aspect.

“Not as of yet Ser Mervyn, I have been in talks with Lord Chelsted however, and we have arranged for a meeting in the King’s own private box to negotiate the land rights, interest rates and other such details in a mere two days from now. I imagine I will come away with a deed or some other declaration from this tournament, and although I suspect the funds will take some time to arrive, I shall indeed be granted what I seek.” She leans in to ensure that no others were privy to your conversation as she whispers.
>>
“Lord Chelsted informs me that Lord Tywin has resigned from his position as Hand of the King, over the King taking in his eldest son and heir as a member of the Kingsguard. Lord Tywin Lannister has fallen from the King’s good graces and any who seek to twist the lions tail are well received in King’s Landing. I may not even need to bring up the prospect of Joanna and Lord Farman’s marriage to his Grace if Lord Qarlton is to be believed.”

The smile she gave was a dangerous one and her eyes gave away how excited and content at the prospect. The potential of the King’s backing was beginning to make her bold, and you had certainly caught her in a fine mood. If there was ever a time to ask about gaining access to house funds now would certainly be it.

“My lady, if I may be so bold as to ask a favour of you?”

“And what might the nature of that favour be Ser Mervyn?”

“It concerns the Loyal Reins my lady, and the military of Ember Peak. I have been speaking with a son of House Malroy about the prospect of acquiring some of his families horses for the men. I’m sure you’ve seen some of them about during the melee.”

“Yes, I have heard of House Malroy Ser Mervyn. My father wrote to me during the War of the Ninepenny King’s and he spoke of a young man who served under him, a Ser Vamos Malroy, and the magnificence of his steed. Now Ser I have no doubt of the quality of their steeds, but did you not just recently purchase horses from House Webber? Surely they are sufficient no?”

--- Ser Mervyn’s Persuasion (Bargain) Test ---
Rolled 14 vs DC: 12, 18
Results: Passed, Failed

“No my Lady, that is true, and the horses bought from House Webber are fine steeds, but I mean to turn the Loyal Reins into a reflection of House Reynold and her prosperity. Between fine golden steeds, I would also see them clad in fine grey half plate to match the colours of Ember Peak. A company of cavalry that will do House Reynold proud.”

Elleanor folds her hands in her lap and smiles a coy smile at you. “Ser Mervyn, one might begin to think that you may be playing favourites? Whatever will the rest of our soldiers say?” You hesitate for a moment before she waves off her comment. “I jest Ser. House Reynold will pay for half of the expense of these horses. If you should meet with a Vamos Malroy, please send him my regards. My father spoke highly of the man in his letters.”

You thanked her for her gratitude and took your leave, leaving her to watch the festivities with Lady Andrea. You left the table in search of wine and found it a few tables over. After pouring yourself a glass you sat upon the table that the pitcher sat on and gazed out into the crowd.

--- Ser Mervyn’s Awareness Test ---
Rolled 15 vs DC: 12
Result: Passed, Passed, Passed

The first thing to catch your eye was your wife, who was now dancing with Tyrus and she was likely berating your poor squire for the state that he found himself in, fussing over him like a mother hen. Motherhood had changed her that way, and she could be very broody when those she cared about were concerned. You could see Ser Austin and his now betrothed dancing together in great sweeping steps as the music continued on. However, a slight disturbance took you away from watching your second in command enjoy the night as a man shouldered through the crowd, nearly knocking into Ser Austin and Jennifer as he did so.

The man was large, and had broad shoulders from which about hung a cloak of muddy red that framed the well worn indigo doublet that strained to contain the mans considerable girth. He walked awkwardly, and stood out even more for the unkempt frock of bright range hair about his head as he attempted to maneuver his way between an older looking man and a beautiful young woman. The man was bald, with not a hair atop of his head and a finely kept and closely cropped silver grey beard that followed the mans jaw line. He wore a doublet of black and about his shoulders was a cloak which was decorated with crabs that were red, purple and gold and he was clearly flustered by the other mans blunders. The young woman however, was gracious enough for the both of them and bowed politely to the larger young man before continuing the dance with him.

They made for an odd pair, for she was beautiful in almost every way. She had long silver hair that had been teased into curls that fell about her shoulders and framed a classically beautiful face. The gown she wore was black, with hints of purple revealed through various slashes and cuts into the fabric and she wore about her neck an ornate and exotic looking golden pendant with what looked like an amethyst set about into the centre. You watched as the large man attempted to lead her but you could see that she was unimpressed despite her mask of propriety, and the man she had been previously dancing with had stormed off to where your eyes could not follow. But as your eyes came back to gaze about the room and you saw Pastorn Malroy sitting alone, glaring out with eyes of emerald fire from a bench nearly opposite you and as you followed his eyes to the pair that were now dancing…

Bare with me this update might be a bit long but it's coming!

It did not take long for you to put two and two together and realize that whoever this woman was important to Pastorn and you found yourself standing and weaving through the crowd as best as you were able. The wound the Bronze Yohn had dealt to you had been a fearsome and you walked with a slight limp in your step that pained you to rest to much weight on your right leg. You saw lords and ladies and knights in all manners of finery as you crossed as they danced and you eyed your target as you got closer.

The man was an exceedingly poor dancer you could see, his feet shuffled as he tried to keep up with the womans graceful steps and his thick, sausage like fingers grabbed her hips clumsily to pull her closer to him. She bore his fumblings courteously but as you came closer you could see the same emerald eyes that Pastorn had and they were looking out past the mans shoulder into the crowd instead of towards her current dance partner. You approached them and placed a firm hand on the mans shoulder and he turns quickly and snarls at you, muttering under his breath “Piss off” as he tries to turn back around but you tighten your grip and slowly pull him back around to face you.

--- Ser Meryn’s Persuasion (Intimidate) Test ---
Rolled 15 vs Intrigue Defense: 7
Result: Two Degrees of Success

The man lets go of his prize in irritation and turns once again to face you. “What ‘n’ the fuck you want?” He bared his teeth like some sort of uncouth dog as he glared at you with common, unintelligent eyes. You could see he had some bruising about his own eye, likely from the melee you figured, which did little to hide that he was an ugly man. He was likely of an age with you, and you could see his weight clearly on his face, with a second chin hanging under his first and sullen eyes that sat above weak cheek bones. He also had a patchy orange beard that matched his hair and eyebrows. You scowled at the man, bringing furrows to your brow deep enough to plant crops in, and he stared into your merciless eyes, as empty as a cold winter sky.

He blinked twice in quick succession. It was the first sign of fear you knew, and in that moment you knew you had him. You pressed in closer to him by half a step as you invaded his personal space. You were perhaps a foot away from the man when you began to speak. “What do I want? Only a dance.” The man breaks eye contact as if to look behind him before turning his eyes back onto you in a flash of anger. “She’s busy wit’ me” is all he managed to say as his eyes left your own and went to the floor as you took another half step closer to him. Six inches was all that separated your faces and you dropped your voice to hoarse whisper. “I believe the lady has tired of your fumblings. I’ll warn you now, you wouldn’t be the first man I’ve killed over a ladies honour.”
>>
He looks up from the ground and when he looks into your eyes he can see just how deadly serious you were. He shrinks back from you, taking a step back before he steels his nerves and hawks a wad of phlegm onto to stone floor and shoulders past you muttering “I was done wit’ ‘er anyways.”. You watched as he nearly upended a woman all clad in yellow which earned the man a tongue lashing from the man she was dancing with although he ignored the comments and sulked away from the hall. You turned and saw the silver haired woman standing gracefully as you bowed slightly and asked for a dance.

“Well after such a chivalrous display how could a lady say no?” She smiles at you, neither warmly nor coldly, and you soon take her hand and begin to lead her through a dance to a soaring and upbeat tune being played by the musicians.

--- Ser Mervyn’s Agility Test ---
Rolled 9 vs DC: 12
Results: Test Failed

You can see the lady restraining a grimace as she soon realizes that you were not learned in the art of dancing any more than her previous partner had been. “I beg your pardon m’lady. My name is Ser Merv…”

She cuts you off by finishing your sentence for you. “Ser Mervyn Reynold. Yes, I know who you are Ser. My brother Pastorn mentioned you whilst we were preparing for this lavish event. I imagine he was the one who put you up to this?”

A confused look comes over your face as you try to match her footwork. “Put me up to this? What do you mean my lady? And please forgive me but you have me at a disadvantage, for I do not know your name.”

Her emerald green eyes look into yours casually as she keeps her silence for a moment during a particular vigorous crescendo before introducing herself. “My name is Isis Malroy. A pleasure to meet you Ser.” The two of you continue your dance and you place a touch to much weight on your right leg and stumble slightly causing Isis to cover her mouth with the back of her hand politely as she stifles a restrained laugh. “I fear that although you may be a mite more courteous, and certainly more comely than Royce Waters, you are no better of a dancer Ser.”
>>
“I hope you can forgive me Lady Isis, I was born with a bastard name myself and learning how to dance with such noble company was hardly part of my upbringing.”

“Well Ser Mervyn, it is rude to not answer a lady’s question. Did my brother put you up to this?”

“Not at all m’lady. I only saw you dancing with someone else when Waters interrupted you, and then I saw Pastorn glaring a look of wildfire at his direction and figured there was a reason he wasn’t intervening.”

“Ah, that would be my uncle, Ser Lucerys Celtigar, a true man of chivalry like yourself Ser Mervyn, coming to a ladies rescue. However Ser, courtesy is a ladies armour as our mothers teach us. There was no need to intervene. Royce Waters has been attempting to court me for some time, he even asked for my favour before the melee began. I believe that is why my brother beat him so mercilessly when he got the chance. And as for Pastorn, there was a reason for his inaction. Our Lord Father had instructed us to “make no waves” so as to prevent any scandal from tainting the Malroy name while he searches the realm for suitable marriage arrangements for his children. So if Pastorn must grit his teeth, and I must dance with my fathers bannermans bastard so be it. So while I appreciate the gesture Ser Mervyn, and Pastorn likely will as well, I must hope for your sake that Royce does not cause any scandal lest my father grow wroth with you. Pastorn spoke of your desire to meet with him.”

The two of you continue your dance, and she was more forgiving in her steps now after telling her your intentions and the song was beginning to wind down to a gradual silence…

I've got a bit an idea regarding the dangerous nature of the upcoming birth. Maester Benjin is specialized in healing right? If he were to deliver the child would it give us a bonus? Perhaps if we keep building good relations with the Malroys we can travel to Steadhold to have the baby delivered.

You broke apart from the woman and as the dance concluded and offered her your arm as you gestured with your head towards where Pastorn and her bald uncle Lucerys were sitting. Isis curtsied politely before taking your arm in a delicate embrace as you began to walk with her towards her family. She allowed you to lead on, but she delicately pushed and pulled at your arm to weave you through the crowd of dancers until you were stood before the present Malroy’s.

The bald man stood presently, as straight as a board and he offered his arm to Isis which she gladly takes, but not before turning to offer you a curtsy and thanking you for your chivalry. “Come Uncle, shall we resume our dance?” The man nods, but extends a hand out which you take in your own and find the mans grip is one of iron.

“Ser Lucerys Celtigar of Claw Isle. A pleasure Ser.” The words were curt but his eyes looked at you approvingly. You introduced yourself and he bids you a good evening as he and Isis move out onto the dance floor and you can see the older man twirl and spin his niece and you can see a smile crest her face that makes her look even more beautiful than she already was and you as you begin to turn you find Pastorn standing next to you shoulder to shoulder.

“My thanks Ser Mervyn. From my uncle, my sister and from myself. How my sister can stand that toad’s fumblings I cannot even begin to fathom. Had my father not forbidden our family from engaging in any scandal lest his talks with various noble families regarding betrothals go awry.” The emerald fire in his eyes had died down to a smoulder but the embers of anger still remained.

“Aye your sister mentioned something about that. I’ve got to say Pastorn, I was surprised to not see you do it yourself…” His right hand clenched into a fist and his lips tighten into a thin line as the embers in his eyes threatened to ignite.

“I thought the thrashing I gave him today during the melee might have thought him to mind his place, but he is not his father and so bumbles along after my sister as he has always done. Donold, Brynden and I used to all take turns beating him in the training yard. He had nearly five years on me and yet still he would end up flat on his back and yielding. He’s a cowardly toad, hopping after my sister as if he might ever actually have a chance to be her suitor.” He let out a long breath through his nostrils as he sought to rein in his temper…

You place a hand on the mans shoulder and gesture towards the bench and Pastorn nods his head and the two of you both make your way to a bench and indulge in the contents of Lord Whent’s wine stores as you pour two cups and sit so as to still be able to watch the merriment of those who were dancing. You downed the contents of your cup long before Pastorn had finished his and as you were refilling your glass you gestured with the decanter towards Lucerys and Isis.

“So that’s an uncle of yours Pastorn? Lucerys he said his name was?”

“Of a sort Ser Mervyn. Ser Lucerys Celtigar is the son of my great aunt, Emberlei Malroy, and Vaenys Celtigar of Claw Isle. Donold, Isis and I call him uncle by way of courtesy but in truth he is a first cousin once removed. A good and honourable man in service to Lord Ardrian Celtigar.”

You nod respectfully. If the mans grip was any sign than he was likely a warrior and one worthy of respect despite, or perhaps because of, the length of his teeth. “Tell me though Pastorn, is your more famous uncle present? The “Black Knight of Malroy”?”

Pastorn hesitates a moment before he looks over towards the high bench and then among the higher ranks of nobility. “Ah, yes. He is…present Ser Mervyn, although I would advise against seeking to meet with him. My uncle is a proud and blunt man at the best of times, and this recent politicking that has cost his lifes ambition…I fear he will be in no mood to meet with a man of the Westerlands.”

“Still though Pastorn, he is a man of honour and skill correct? A martial man? Surely he would want to meet with his competition and gain the measure of the man he seeks to fight on the morrow?” He grimaces and you can see him warring with himself by the expressions he wore on his face.

“I don’t know Ser Mervyn…”

“Come on. Worst case scenario he doesn’t talk to me. If he’s already decided he has my name for the melee tomorrow having him dislike me isn’t going to make things any worse is it? Best case I can get the measure of a man who surely means to pummel me into the dirt.” You grinned at him and you can see hesitation hover in his eyes and the exact moment when his mind was made up as he puts his hands on the table as he makes to stand.

“Don’t say I didn’t warn you Ser Mervyn…my uncles manner is as blunt as that hammer of yours.”

Pastorn escorted you through the crowd of merry makers and as you tried to identify the man he was leading you towards. The table you approach surprised you, for the man who was sitting at the table alone looking nothing like the other Malroy’s you had met. The man had dark eyes that he kept low as he brooded as well as a crown of scruffy black hair that adorned his head. His cheeks were covered in course, dark stubble that grew on his cheeks and on the edge of the hairline of his beard you could see the feint remnants of pock marks. He bore almost no family resemblance to either Pastorn, Isis or Lucerys, all with their Valyrian features. Pastorn had his hands behind his back as he coughed politely and the man looked up from his cup.

“Ser Dontos, I have someone who wishes to make your acquaintance.” The man looks at his nephew with dubious eyes before turning them on you and you could see the slightest look of surprise in his eyes before they turned back to Pastorn. “Ser Mervyn Reynold of Ember Peak, I am pleased to introduce my uncle, Ser Dontos Malroy of Steadhold.”

Ser Dontos Malroy stood and you could see you were of a height with him and the two of you shook hands at the introduction. He was clad in black, head to toe, although the buttons of his doublet were a bright gold as was the pin that fastened a plush purple half cape about the man’s shoulders. The two of you held the grip, taking the measure of one another as you stared into one another’s eyes. It was only after a few awkward seconds that the man finally spoke. “Seven blessings, Ser Mervyn.”

“To you as well Ser Dontos. Might we sit for a moment?” You said it with a slight inclination of your head towards the otherwise empty bench and although the look on the mans face said he would prefer anything but, he gestured with his arm in a curt sweeping motion and yourself and Pastorn sit across from the man. He grabs at two cups and pours each of the two of you a glass and when you take a sip you were surprised to find that it was nothing but water.
>>
“Congratulations on your efforts in the melee today Ser Dontos. The Black Knight of Malroy is truly someone to fear on the field.” You smiled politely but did not find the gesture returned, instead you see his brow pinch together in a scowl as he slowly takes a sip from his cup.

“Indeed Ser Mervyn, although so far the competition has been lacking. I must say that I had hoped for a better showing from the Westerlands after one of their own was inducted into the Kingsguard. Perhaps the men there are more like to worship the Smith or the Mother than the Warrior.”

You grit your teeth momentarily before turning your lips upwards into a forced smile. “I can assure you that we worship the Warrior just as you do Ser.” Now it was Dontos’ turn to grit his teeth as the realisation of your home became evident.

“Perhaps we shall see on the morrow Ser. No man from the West could withstand me today. A pity Ser Jaime Lannister does not fight, I should have dearly liked to test my skill at arms against the man.” The man’s knuckles were white as he gripped the stem of his cup and you could see the muscles in his jaw flex even beneath his stubble.

“A pity indeed Ser Dontos. The Crownlands look well represented by House Malroy. Your nephew and yourself looked in fine form.” His chest swells momentarily, but if it were from pride or just his breathing you could not say. The look on his face however was one that did not appreciate flattery however, and the man only stares at you with his dark eyes…

--- Ser Mervyn’s Persuasion (Charm) Test ---
Rolled 17 vs DC: ???
Result: Test Failed

“Well Ser Dontos, if the rumours I hear are true, you are not the only person slighted by Ser Jaime’s ascension. My liege, Lady Elleanor Reynold has told me of how Lord Tywin Lannister has taken the news and according to her it is not well. The man lost his heir, and now a dwarf stands to inherit Casterly Rock.”

The mans cup comes down to the table hard, and his eyes stare into the water that was swirling in his cup. “I place no stock in rumours. Ser. The fact that a position as hallowed as the Kingsguard can be influenced by petty politics is nothing short of blasphemy and is an affront to both the faith and the royal family.”

His face had begun to redden as his rage begun to boil over. Pastorn wore a look of apprehension on his face as Ser Dontos continued…

“I do not associate with those who partake in such talks Ser Mervyn, for I am a man of honour. I will look for you on the field tomorrow Ser, and I hope you prove a more honourable combatant than you do as a conversationalist.” His rage seemed to darken even further until a man appears in your peripherals and you can see Ser Dontos’ face lighten although he still bore the hallmarks of anger etched into his features. The man wore the colours of House Targaryen but as to who he was you could not say. A T. “Ser Dontos, I find myself in need of prayer. Would you accompany my to the sept?”

Dontos for his part stood immediately and nodded. “It would be an honour. I too find myself in need of prayer and contrition.” The man in black and red smiled a soft smile and the two of them took off away from the hall as they made for the grand courtyard to find the sept. Pastorn for his part looks to you with the same grimace he’d born when you mentioned Lord Tywin. “I told you Ser. He is a prickly man where his honour is concerned.”

You shook your head in silence as the two of you made your way back to the more populous part of the feast, but as you were doing so you were intercepted by your wife. She largely ignored you, and instead offered her arm to Pastorn. “Ser Pastorn, may I have this dance?” She phrased it as a question but gave him no time to respond as she interlaced her arm into his and the two of them were soon disappearing into the crowd…

You watched as she led him towards the middle of the floor and the two began to dance. Pastorn to his credit was more than up to the task of matching Alyssa’s skill. You could see some others you knew dancing as well. Ser Austin Osgrey was dancing with his betrothed while you could see Ser Tristan, known effectually as the Dornishman dancing with a woman in colours you didn’t know, but guessing by her complexion she was likely from Dorne as well.

A small group of your men catch your eye at a table and you walked over to join them. Ser Walder Erenford was dressed in a doublet of yellow with a cloak of pink thrown back over his shoulders, while Ser Jeremy Flowers dressed primarily in brown and greys while bouncing a serving wench on his knees. The last man to make up the trio was Ser Art of the Pendric Hills, the oldest man of your cavalry company. The three men were drinking wine and you joined them to listen to them tell the tales of their own experiences of the melee.

Ser Art had not participated, stating that he was too old for such a thing and that he would not be participating in the joust either. The man was five and thirty, certainly not past the age of fighting but he was a stubborn man and once he had set his mind to something there was no convincing him otherwise. Ser Jeremy had laughed while he recounted the tale of how he had been unhorsed by a man from the Stormlands, a man with a peapod emblazoned on his shield. Lastly, Ser Walder spoke of his own defeat at the hands of a distant cousin of House Frey. Ser Walder spoke little of his defeat instead turning to his cup and drinking deep of the wine that lay within.

The only man to make it through to the open rounds from Ember Peak asides from yourself was Ser Austin Osgrey, a thought that brought a smile to your face. Twice you’d fallen to the man while jousting with him at the two most recent weddings you’d attended and you looked forward to being able to challenge the man in something less formal than a joust. You looked out and watched Ser Austin as he danced gracefully, knowing the choreographed steps that consisted of the noble art of dance. You soon spied your wife and Pastorn and you could see the two of them talking quietly as the music played on about them. The song changed and you could see Alyssa and Pastorn break apart and switch partners and soon Alyssa was dancing with a man you did not know while Pastorn had ended up dancing with Cerenna who had seemingly appeared out of nowhere.

You spend the rest of the evening with your men, keeping a close eye on your wife as she enjoyed the nights revelries being approached not once, but twice by men looking for her favour in the days to come. She politely declined them but you could see that she was enjoying the attention regardless. The night began to wind down as the wine began to take it’s hold on people and fatigue began to set in. Alyssa walks over to you and you could see a few beads of sweat dotting her forehead from the exertions of her dancing as she offered you an arm to escort her back to your pavilion to which you nodded and stood as the two of you began to walk.

“So how was your dance?” She asked the question pointedly and with a small tinge of jealousy in her voice. You had taken care to explain what had happened between Pastorn, Isis and Royce Waters and Alyssa had listened patiently as you walked along before nodding her head while you spoke. The look on her face was one of cool neutrality as she then took her turn to elaborate on the various dance partners she’d had over the course of the evening. By the time you’d reached your room the two of you were tearing the clothes off each other with desire, hunger and no small amount of jealousy as the two of you enjoyed each others company as husband and wife.

Alyssa turned over to look at you as the pair of you tried to catch your breath as she took a small pinch of the hair that covered your chest as she pulled. “I’d like to meet this “Isis Malroy” before the tournament is done. Perhaps get the measure of the woman that brought forth my husband to dance so unprompted…”

You promised her that you would ask Pastorn about possibly arranging a meeting between the two of them, perhaps before or during the melee and kissed her tenderly on the top of her head as the two of you drifted off to sleep.

--- Break ---

Alright guys, so I'm currently away from home on a job, switching back and forth between day and night shift so I'm going to be gone until at least after Christmas. The next thread will most likely be either between Christmas and New Years, or sometime in early 2020. Thanks for your patience, and thank you as always for playing. I'll try to respond to any questions you guys might have in between my shifts. Thanks guys!

>No Joe and no Father

Christmas is ruined!

But i do have a question. Is Alyssa embarresed of Mervyn ? She is often jealous of her sisters and their good matches, Mervyn often embarres her when it come to courtly matters and he cant dance. She wasnt even that thrilled to marry him intill she saw his face. Kinda feel like it is more a physical attraction than anything else. That she has a fantasy and the only thing Mervyn actually provide to it is his looks and their children.

Any way you could share what the Malroys thoughts about Mervyn are ?

Can you tell us who we will face in the next round of the melee ?
>>
>>3974235
Damn. I like the questions so this answer might b a bit lengthy here.

Alyssa and Mervyn have an unusual relationship to say the least, because in alot of things they are quite opposite.

Firstly, Alyssa is absolutely jealous of both of her sisters. As a matter of fact her Vice is Jealous. Her characteristics are as follows.

Goal: Family
Motivation: Security
Virtue: Dutiful
Vice: Jealous

Three of them tie into Alyssa's desire for Mervyn to become a landed knight (or maybe even eventually a lord). It ties in to her jealousy between her sisters, particularly that of Elyse as she is her younger sister, as well as Security and Family, both of which some from having some sort of inheritance for her children.

Now, while their relationship is largely physical and "young", there is genuine love between them that could blossom into a deep and powerful type of bond as they grow older. Asides from the physical attraction, Alyssa is also very attracted to the fact that Mervyn is ambitious and the two of them largely share the same dream. Also, while she doesn't enjoy hearing alot of specific details, she is immensely attracted to how dangerous Mervyn is.

That being said, there are times that him being lowborn, and not understanding the finer nuances of politics irritate the hell of her, and the fact he can't dance is something she hates and would very much so like to remedy. So all in all, there is alot of positives between them, but it's certainly not sunshine and rainbows.

I don't want to speak too in depth on the Malroy's opinions of Mervyn so far, but I'll give a brief summary on what I imagine they'd be thinking, although I imagine Father can clarify far better than I.

Dontos: He was unimpressed before to say the least, but now he dislikes him for what he views as speaking about things very personal to him, in particular talking about how Tywin Lannister is wroth about his son being inducted Would absolutely look down on Mervyn if he knew of his origins,

Pastorn: He's growing quite warm towards Mervyn. As close to friends as you can be after meeting someone a day or two ago. Mervyn's skill at arms has impressed him, and with those 18's you guys kept rolling, I imagine that Pastorn finds the lowborn man compelling in his own way.

Isis: Mervyn isn't someone Isis is really going to think about much one way or another. Not to say he didn't make a positive impression, but Mervyn is nowhere near the forefront of her mind.

>>3976667
I rather like Merv stumbling with his interaction with Dontos. It shows that Merv just doesn't understand highborn sensibilities. To Merv, Dontos is just another highborn cunt that he is going to need to bash with his hammer. That's the way it should be.
>>
>>3976667
>tfw your wife is ashamed of you

Also i would like to spend some more time with Isis
>>
>>3976689
>It shows that Merv just doesn't understand highborn sensibilities
It also shows that a "reveal a tidbit in hope of a favor" option that anons love to pick isn't always the best choice.
Felt a little bit like Joe baited us, but no harm and Dontos is a hardass in more sense than one anyway.

>>3976728
How would that look and why would she want to?
