The spires above him were towering like bony fingers of an old man, trying to reach out to the sky with his last dying breath. Hive Babelion was truly a magnificent, yet haunting sight. Yet this was no time to marvel at the architectural wonders. Xyptus threw his half-finished lho-stick over the railing into a ten-thousand feet abyss and turned towards the figure approaching him via the catwalk from the neighbouring spire.

The figure turned out to be a white-haired man of nondescript age with dark bags under his eyes and a sharp scent of exotic perfume around him. His clothes were worn and ragged, if not the scent, one could take him for a low-born commoner.

Xyptus smiles, showing his teeth:
>Cote. Good to see you alive. Emperor protects, yada yada. Do you have the goods?

Shady merchant, according to the file, named Enryn Cote, was to be one more addition to Xyptus' collection of assets on the Sector Deus throne world. All he had to do was to bring back a copy of a certain documents (at the request of brother Renard), acquired from his merchant buddies. But things turned out differently.

>He... hello Margon. Yes, I do, I mean, I did. However things didn't go according to plan. My friend, Laurentius, I think he's in trouble. We were supposed to meet for a drop, but he never showed up. Please, Margon, I need your help, I need that money! I promise I will recover it! Give me another day!

Xyptus thinks about it.
>Give him a day, this can't hurt
>Giving in is bad practice, push him harder
>He failed you, you can't trust him (throw Cote over the railing)
>Those documents are important, offer Cote to help him find his friend

[HuLL_Armoured]
It's time to go on a little journey with Lyk.

A few weeks ago I noticed that HuLL lacks artwork. That defiency could not be overlooked, so I spent about 12 hours in paint and online editors, trying to change the existing art of a space marine to suit my purposes. I gave him a huge shield, changed the colours and generally tried pretty hard to give HuLL a suitable image. The large shield also managed to hide some of the more difficult parts I would've needed to edit.
This is the result.

But, I noticed that in those 12 hours alone, I learned a lot and was sad that I couldn't use the skills I picked up on the way from the very beginning of work. To see if I could further improve the process and make it faster, I threw this together in about 5 hours.
Certainly an improvement, but not good enough.

Next I wondered if I could do better, I asked Luigi which marines still need artwork, among them was Macedon. So I looked for a suitable pic with minimal edit necessary to make it fit and after an hour or so I found this.

The paint vesion fell behind expectations, I could have continued it, but plenty of redrawing would've been necessary. So instead I looked up Gimp and went to bed, deciding that I'll go for it hard the day after.
I did, spent an hour or two with watching tutorials of all kinds and then got to work, it was the first time I had to do some drawing myself, since I had to cover larger parts of the armour (mostly the shoulder pauldrons) while keeping it vaguely in the style of the original artist. Due to the eyes and sword (and a failed attempt later to make the sword look a bit more like Macedon's by adding a skull) I learned a lot about lighting, smudging and colour mixing after about 9 hours on the gimp version with a couple more spent on watching tutorials I wasn't pleased with the result, but content. I definitely learned a lot on the way.

[Dreadnought]
After making much progress and learning quite a lot from the more complicated artstyle before. I decided to go back and see what I could do with a simpler one. Luigi reminded me that we have an empty contemptor dreadnought chassis with a plasmacannon I could do.
The problem was that I didn't find a good image with a plasmacannon, so instead I had to find one without a plasmacannon and try my hand at once again completely recolouring an image with small edits and additions here and there but then also adding something a lot more substancial than just a surface paint job.
It took me about two full days of work, I learned quite a lot about inserting glows, resizing and distorting things, some finer points about gradual colour manipulation and even about drawing, since Luigi was autistically fixated on the dreadnought having the right weapons.
I think my plasmacannon turned out pretty good, the whole thing took me about 20 hours.

[HuLL_Artificer_Armour]
At this point I thought I was ready for the big league. I was quite bothered by the fact that HuLL lacked a picture of his own with proper weapons and MK III armour.
So I took a picture of a knight and changed pretty much everything about him, except the chestplate, since I thought it nicely represented additional armour plates layered ontop of the normal front armour that one might see on MK III breacher armour or the kind of artificer armour I've been working to get Hull for like a year now (the techmarine who can handle that is still away at the moment).
Here's a link with 17 pictures detailing the journey, the first few hours of the work are missing because at that point (the second pic) it was just a concept: https://imgur.com/a/Pt5dYNx
The helmet alone took me like 8 hours and I learned a lot. About everything, really. I even gave him a nice mace in green, not blue, because adding another colour is too cheerful and we're not the rainbow warriors. But before the helmet, I had a larger battle with the prominent pauldron, I had to change the 3 thin plates into one thick one and a lot of what I had learned before came in handy. I'm pretty proud of the bottom right part of it, since I captured the colouration and shadows nicely and learned a lot about edges that I later needed for the helmet.
With that I was done, my entire journey took me about 60+ hours, I was happy with my work and content with what I had achieved, I just wanted to try one more thing...

[Harmantos]
That thing was a simple experiment about recolouring, decolouring and decolouring and then colouring. For that I chose Harmantos, captain of the second company. The eyes took the longest and the skull was golden first, but I tried out the silver-blue colour, since he's the leader of the ice-wraiths and the chat agreed with me that that looks better.
I was done, but...
While finishing up Harmantos I found 2 pictures and got really angry.
Mostly because of one, it was a space marine with a mace and a shield in weighty (but not terminator) armour. Exactly what I had been looking for a couple weeks before. So I basically wasted dozens of hours to learn something I could've gotten easier and with a better result in much less time.

After being really mad, I started with the other picture. One of a marine with a power-axe. Reidor (the lad with the jump-pack and the power axe from our little adventure with the chaplain) left an impression on the chat, so I thought I might as well give him a fitting image.
It was quick and dirty, not that much was learned, I was really just warming up for Hull.

[HuLL_Helmetless]
This is the picture that drove me to anger. I decided to stick to the basics laid out in the very first HuLL pic, golden wings, sharp contrasts between dark and light and made sure the mace was burning with green fire, because I might as well stay consistent over different pics (even if it was lightning before).
It took me about 2 days, much of the first one spent on creating paths and then channels to make sure the details and different colours or parts of the armour wouldn't get caught in a single act of recolouring and keep them from blending into each other.

And with that, I'm truly done. All in all it took me about 80+ hours, but now I'm an amateur at using gimp.

The flash Xyptus noticed is now accompanied by a loud, but distant firing of a machine gun.

[my roll: target 30 or below]

Xyptus jumps to the side, draws his plasma pistol and fires off a single well-aimed shot at the enemy. While the gun rapidly overheats in the process, the effect is worth it - the ball of molten plasma connects with a pipe, possibly a utility nexus, just behind the enemy position, exploding the whole hab section, you can see two burning bodies fly out of the hiding straight into the abyss.

Situation is still in flux, do you take the dive? If yes, roll d100.

It seems your opponents didn't underestimate you, suddenly a new threat appears from behind the corner in the form of an armoured ganger, by the looks of it, a mutant as well. He shambles towards you, power-maul in hand, ready to strike.

- Use the environment to your advantage

Cote managed to get the handle of grenade just as ganger closed in - Xyptus is not sure what exactly was merchant expecting, but hand grenade doesn't make for the best close combat weapon. He threw the grenade at the ganger just as the brute smacked him over the head with the power maul. You could see merchant's eyes jumping out of the sockets a moment before an explosion tore both him and the ganger into shreds. Explosion shook the hive-street, shattering a couple of windows in the nearby buildings.

Cursing, Xyptus disappears in one of the side streets, after quickly checking Cote's corpse for clues. While the encounter with the informant didn't go as expected, important lessons were learned.
