Your name is Sean Clayton, aka Adjutant Tango, aka Gunsmoke. After rifling through the box of goodies you swiped from Rockwell’s cult, you discovered an ominous letter and shared its contents with Jack. Later, while attempting to learn Greek, you stumbled ass-backwards into accidentally reciting an ancient Greek incantation, summoning some kind of divine avenger that attempted to pull you through a portal. Thankfully, you managed to avoid its grasp. Shortly afterward, you accepted a contract from Marshall, Carter, and Dark to join up with one of the local factions and help tip the balance of power in the favor. The purpose? To spark a gang war for reasons considered above your pay grade. To that end, you got Cortez’s aid for an introduction to Bane’s militia. After meeting one of Bane’s lieutenants, Bird, and impressing him in a trial by combat, you earned entrance into the group as well as a personal meeting with Bane. Your first job in Bane’s militia was nearly derailed by Penguin’s goons, whom you sent packing after implicitly threatening to blow them to kingdom come.

Currently, you’re preparing to get some rest, while making idle chatter with Jack.

“So how did your excursion go, Sean?”

> “Meh. It was pretty boring. A few of Penguin’s gang to tried to cause some trouble, but I managed to scare them off.”

“Doing some work for Bane, eh? Interesting fellow. We don’t exactly run in the same circles, but once you’ve been in this business long enough, rumors always float to the surface.”

> “Do tell.”

“From what I’ve heard, he’s no meathead. Underneath all that muscle is a ruthless and sharpened mind. Underestimate him at your peril, Sean. I’ve also heard murmurs that he and that walking cliché Cobblepot have a particular distaste for one another, but I have no idea why. Lastly, he doesn't suffer betrayal lightly. A few years back, he caught one of his lieutenants skimming from a few operations. It……..wasn’t pretty. You’ll be fine, so long as you keep your head on straight. Anyways, goodnight.”

> “Night, Jack.”

After a dreamless sleep, you find yourself with some free time. Bird said it’d be a few days until you got the call to meet Bane, and Jack’s contact won’t be prepped until next week. How do you plan on spending today?

Unlocking new spells is an arduous and difficult process, akin to pushing your magical muscles to their apex.

You begin to channel your negative feelings and restlessness, until you feel like you’re going to explode.

Alright, this is part where it all gets expelled from you, and you get a power boost.

Any second now.

You know, you never did ask Set about the consequences…..

Your frantic musings are interrupted by the side effects of magical overload. It all floods back into you, leaving you momentarily overwhelmed by the alien nature of the sensation.

After it wears off, you do a quick check to make sure that you’re still functional.

You examine yourself for any adverse effects, but you seem fine, at least physically.

In the spirit of experimentation, you cast Lightning Bolt. Curiously, nothing comes out. On your second try, a massive burst of electrical energy streams from your hands and blackens a nearby tree.

> Debuff Gained: Lightning Rod (Temporary): You are still able to use your Storm powers, but are unable to properly control them.

(TBC)
>>
>>3997374

You grumpily head back inside, discouraged about the multiple setbacks you’ve suffered so far.

Jack seems to notice your sour mood, but elects to simply leave you to your own devices.

Your moping is interrupted by your phone going off. Judging by the caller ID, it’s Genghis.

> “Hey, Genghis. What’s up?”

“Gunsmoke. I’ve got an opportunity if you’re interested. There’s a tournament of sorts being held in Blüdhaven later today. Underground fighting league stuff. Are you interested? I got extended an invitation to participate, and I’m allowed to bring a plus one. You wouldn’t have to compete, not if you don’t want to.”

> “It’s not to the death, right?”

“No, that’d be bad for business. It happens on occasion, but mostly during grudge matches.”

> “Do I need to come armed?”

“You can if you want, but you’ll have to check them in.”

You decide to……

> Give it a shot. It’ll give you a chance to scope out some other hitters at least.

> Decline. You’re not a huge fan of blood sports.

“Meet me outside of our training spot at 2:30, and I’ll give you a ride over. Make sure to wear your work clothes.”

> “See you later, then.”

Guess that you’ll be going in your Gunsmoke gear.

Speaking of gear, you decide to go……

> Armed with your (.44 Magnum / 1911 / Beretta) and (Fairbairn-Sykes / KABAR / Knuckle Trench Knife)

You decide to come armed, just in case there’s any kind of funny business going on.

You rummage around Jack’s armory and find an additional Farbairn to supplement your loadout, and decide to bring a knuckle trench knife as well.

In your search, you find a small box. When opened it reveals it contents to be a revolver.

“You like it? I swiped that off a particularly oblivious lawman back in the 30’s. Solid choice, that.”

Jack startles you slightly with his sudden entrance.

“.38 Police Positive Special. I’ve always viewed that one as a bit of a lucky charm. Take her for a spin, she’s rested long enough.”

You gently pick it up, before examining it and sliding it into your holster.

Clad in your Gunsmoke outfit, Jack drops you off outside Genghis’ warehouse. You spot him waiting nearby in an old white Honda.

You probably look a bit strange, but this is Gotham after all.

You knock on the window, and Genghis unlocks the doors.

You slide into the passenger seat and buckle up. Safety first, after all.

“Glad you could make it. Trip won’t be too bad, Blüdhaven’s only a half hour away.”

> “There anything else I need to know about this place?”

“The people organizing this aren’t the kind of people you want to fuck with. It’s literally an underground fighting tournament. They’ve got this little arena built in the abandoned Metro tunnels. They call it The Pit. They get a lot of rich assholes looking to watch somebody get their head stomped in, so their security is good.

Here’s how the tournament works. There are two different brackets. Meta and normal. Metas can only fight in the Meta bracket, but anyone without powers can fight in either bracket. Keeps things from being too lopsided.

Grand prize for the normal bracket is some kind of fancy gadget. They usually keep the prize for the Meta bracket a secret, but it’s always something valuable.”

> “You, uh, don’t know what the normal prize is?”

“I’m here to fight. That’s my priority, not some shiny bauble.”

> “How’d you get an invite to this anyway? You beat up a bunch of goons in alleys or something?”

“I’ve been in this sort of business for a long time. One of my previous employers has some sway with the organizers, so they offer me an invite sometimes. You’ve been a good sparring partner, so I figured you’d enjoy coming along for the ride.”

> “Thanks.” You state without a single ounce of sarcasm.

> “I’m undecided. I’d like to watch a few fights before jumping in.”

“Smart. Luckily for you, there’ll some qualifying matches before the brackets kick off. They’re for people that heard about the tournament, but couldn’t get an official invite. You’ll have a chance to sign up afterwards. Just tell them you’re on Genghis’ ticket.”

The rest of your journey continues in silence, as you stare out the window. Seeing something other than Gotham’s depressing sights is a welcome change, at least until you cross over into Blüdhaven proper.

Gotham’s a hellhole, there’s no denying that, but you’d take it over Blüdhaven any day of the week.

> “Jesus, what a shithole.” You softly murmur to yourself.

Whereas Gotham gives off the vibe that it’ll shake you down for everything you’ve got, Blüdhaven feels like it’ll rob you, murder you, and perform indecent acts to your corpse.

You keep a hand on your .38 Special, silently thanking your foresight to come prepared.

Nobody tries to do anything stupid though, and Genghis’ Honda proceeds unmolested to its destination; an abandoned subway entrance, with a smattering of armed guards.

Genghis finds a safe place to park, satisfied with the assurance by one of the guards that it’ll be protected.

He reaches into his pocket and produces a fancy looking piece of paper, before presenting to the largest looking guard.

Genghis nods in your direction.

“He’s with me.”

The guard scrutinizes the paper carefully, before handing it back, apparently satisfied.

“Everything looks good. You know the rules, hand over any miscellaneous weapons, poisons, gadgets, or any other devices capable of causing irreparable harm.” He states, in an incredibly bored tone of voice. Chances are, he’s delivered this speech a lot today.

You hand over your various knives and your .38 Special to the guard.

After a brief patdown and scan with some kind of device, he thanks you for your cooperation.

Genghis leads you through the doors, and down a few flights of stairs.

That’s when you catch your first glimpse of The Pit.

It’s surprisingly modern looking, you half-expected an actual Roman-style colosseum.

Looks like there’s a fight in progress, which concludes after one of the fighters takes a shot to the face with a metal pipe.

He goes down, smearing blood onto the windows of the viewing box, to its occupants visible excitement. Presumably, it’s placed as such that the richer patrons have a more visceral view of the carnage.

Genghis nudges you.

“C’mon. We need to grab our seats before the qualifiers start.”

It’s almost surreal. Hell, there’s even a few people selling drinks and food.

After a bit of climbing, you find some decent seating overlooking the arena.

> “I thought there were no weapons allowed? How’d that guy get a pipe?”

“Gambling on fights is encouraged, so some of the wealthier clientele are allowed to purchase weapons at an exorbitant markup and have it thrown into the ring. Another way to generate interest, and a little more profit. Looks like the next qualifier is starting.”

As the fallen fighter’s body is dragged unceremoniously from the ring, a short man with a microphone begins narrating.

“What a fantastic match! Here’s hoping our next bout is just as intense! Presenting…….Deathstalker!”

A door on the arena floor opens, and a large man dressed entirely in black enters the arena.

“And his opponent, Electrocutioner! Let’s hope he can still deliver a shocking finish, even without his signature gauntlets!“

The other door opens, and a heavily scarred man in a red and black suit enters.

Capitalizing on Electrocutioner’s weakness, Deathstalker unleashes a vicious uppercut that sends Electrocutioner reeling. He follows with a vicious series of combination punches, and levels Electrouctioner with a jaw-crunching kick to the face.

You and most of the non-sadistic viewing audience wince at how the match concluded, as both fighters leave / are dragged out.

“A thrilling display! A reminder, we only have two more qualifying matches, before the tournament begins in earnest! Next up is a special guest….presenting one-half of Blüdhaven’s own femme fatale, Double Dare!”

The door opens and a young woman with long hair and a yellow outfit leaving little to the imagination enters the arena.

“And her opponent…..Kenshi!”

The sole member of Double Dare performs a few feints, trying to bait a reaction from Kenshi. However, he’s either too smart or too skilled to fall for her tricks, and doesn’t give her any openings. She gets frustrated, and commits to a head-on attack, certain that her own agility would allow her to dodge any counter-strikes. This assumption is proven to be incorrect when Kenshi delivers a flying knee strike to her head. She gets back up, obviously shaken, and is battered by Kenshi’s unrelenting strikes, ending with a chop to her throat that leaves her gasping for air.

“Kenshi stands victorious!”

Both fighters leave, with Double Dare requiring a bit of help.

“Next up is our last qualifying match, ladies and gentlemen! In this corner, Enforcer!”

The arena door opens and a man wearing an armored yellow and blue suit enters.

“And his opponent, Nobody!”

Enforcer and Nobody begin circling, neither eager to be the first to make a mistake or show weakness.

When Nobody presses the attack, Enforcer isn’t just ready for it; he planned for it.

Nobody’s coordinated strike backfires in the worst way possible.

Enforcer delivers a devastating kick to Nobody’s leg. Judging from the sound, he possibly snapped it.

Smelling blood in the water, Enforcer grabs and finds purchase on Nobody’s helmet. Enforcer then proceeds to manhandle him, delivering blow after blow to several different vital areas. Solar plexus, throat, groin, kidneys, none are spared from Enforcer’s methodical strikes.

Eventually, once Enforcer thinks he’s had enough, he tosses Nobody’s crumpled form onto the ground.

“A brutal and horrifying display! I wish we could watch it again! That was our last qualifying match, everyone! Registrations for the tournament end soon, so don’t miss it! Until then!”

“Fair enough. Although, that means that there is a chance we’ll encounter each other in the ring, for I also intend on fighting in the normal bracket. I don’t intend on holding back.”

> “Good. Neither do I.”

Genghis chuckles lightly at your exchange.

“Registration should be down the stairs, back near the entrance. Try not to break anyone too badly.”

You follow Genghis’ directions, and follow a sign labeled “Registrar.” Eventually, you are led to a booth with a irritated looking guard manning it.

> “I’d like to join in the tournament.”

“Name?”

“Whatever. As a reminder, the owners and operators of The Pit are not responsible in any way for any form of maiming, crippling, death, or any other unfortunate fate within the arena. Do you agree to these terms?”

> “Yes.”

“Wonderful. Which bracket are you entering into?”

> “The normal bracket.”

“Fantastic. As I’m sure you already know, if you reveal any metahuman attributes during the tournament, you will be immediately disqualified and permanently banned from the premises.

He shuffles a few papers around, before stamping a piece of paper and handing it to you.

“The paper has your name, and a contestant number on it. When the announcer calls out for your number, you have ten minutes to report back here, otherwise it is an instant concession. Fight well.”

Hmm...

Good point. I kind of assumed that if we tried to manifest it it'd be a crapshoot as to whether it came out like a leaky faucet trickle or a firehose blast... I mean, you could assume that we went from Gotham to Bludhaven without frying Ghengis that it'd be fine, but it might activate unconsciously in a combat situation.

Maybe we should try some warm-ups somewhere just to make sure it doesn't come out in combat uncalled for?

You head back up to your seat, and settle in next to Genghis.

“What number did you get?”

> “5. And yours?”

“10. Hopefully there will be some actual competition here. Thankfully, the normal bracket goes before the Meta bracket. In case of structural damage, or to keep the crowd invested, probably. The wait would be agonizing otherwise.”

Makes sense. Your pondering is cut off by an announcement. Looks like the tournament is beginning in earnest.

“After a random selection, we have the lineup for our first bout! Would numbers 3 and 4 kindly prepare themselves for battle!”

A few minutes pass, as they presumably head down and perform some last minute checks.

“It looks like we have a fantastic first match lined up! Our first contestant is the other half of Double Dare! Maybe she can avenge her sister’s ignoble defeat!”

The left arena door opens, and a woman walks out. She looks and dresses exactly like her sister, apart from her shorter hairstyle. She waves, and blows a kiss to the crowd.

“And her opponent? None other than the infamous, cold-blooded assassin, Shrike!”

The right arena door opens, and a man wearing a red and yellow costume comes up, with a cruel smirk on his face. Looks like he’s confident in his victory. That could prove his undoing.

“BEGIN!”

Double Dare immediately goes on the offensive, surprising Shrike. Looks like he wasn’t expecting the fight to begin so quickly.

He doesn’t take her seriously, which inevitably proves to be his undoing. While he’s busy trying to play with his food, he fails to notice how she’s steadily whittling him down with a series of precise strikes. Eventually, she’s weakened him to the point where she can deliver a gracefully executed kick to Shrike’s throat.

While he’s busy trying to learn to breathe again, she puts him out of commission with a nasty strike to the back of the head.

“Winner, Double Dare!”

Once again she shows off a little for the crowd, and blows a few kisses, before exiting the ring.

A couple of the guards help carry Shrike out.

“Next up, are numbers 1 and 5! Would numbers 1 and 5 please report to the arena!”

> “Looks like I’m up next. Wish me luck.”

“Show them what you’ve learned.”

You head back down to the guard booth, where you are ushered through a back hallway into the left entrance to the arena.

The announcer is still somewhat audible, even through the arena door.

“Ladies and gentleman, for your viewing pleasure, I present Gunsmoke!”

Guess that’s your cue. The door opens, and you enter The Pit. It seemed a lot smaller from the outside, but that could just be how it’s laid out.

“And his opponent? The dreaded Crusher himself, give it up for Sportsmaster!”

The other door opens, and a large man wearing some kind of hockey mask and armor enters.

"BEGIN!"

He appraises you, before giving a slight chuckle.

“Guess they’ll let just about anybody in nowadays. Still, I’m sure the crowd will enjoy watching me take you apart.”

You know just how to end this. Sportsmaster struggles back to his feet, and you press your advantage.

You easily dodge Sportsmaster’s clumsy blows intended to keep you at bay while he recovers.

After he foolishly expands his remaining energy and runs out of steam, you strike.

You get in close and throw a left hook that would make Muhammad Ali and Popeye proud.

It connects with Sportsmaster’s jaw, sending him spinning off his feet unto the floor of The Pit.

“Winner, in a fantastic frenzy, Gunsmoke!”

That was tough, no two ways about it. However, you managed to defeat an experienced opponent with nothing but your fists and your mind; no magic necessary.

And that, you tell yourself, is an even greater victory.

Really, Gunsmoke is a wake-up call for her. In canon Babs didn't get serious until she was crippled which forced her to mature fast and become a world class hacker, she was a carefree/smug little shit

Bane follows a fairly similar modus operandi to us actually when he's not high on venom because the guys writing are assholes: troll the bat family when possible, put down douchebag's not following the unwritten Gotham rule of no killing when possible unless you wanna get ostracized by everyone. Joker gets past the rule but everyone tends to hate him.

Unfortunately thanks to her interlude we know that she failed to have that wakeup call and instead has a personal vendetta.

>>4007278
I don't know Tim's face scarring seemed to have an effect on her
>>
>>4007287
The interlude never hinted at her getting serious but more developing a personal vendetta. I think it was Tim who actually decided to get serious though thanks to run in with Gunsmoke.

At any rate we're not in this job to prop up bat-brats. We're here to... Eventually get revenge, I'd assume.
>>
>>4007573
More to make money so we can not starve to death, I'd think. Though getting some sort of revenge on the guys who screwed us over does sound like a decent secondary objective. Though trying to take revenge on an entire government might be a bit much, for one guy. Maybe just target our superiors or something?

“What a magnificent fight, ladies and gentlemen! A round of applause for our intrepid warriors!”

The crowd claps and hoots, while some of the richer patrons eye you appraisingly.

“Still, the show must go on! Would numbers 2 and 12 kindly head down to the arena!”

Catching your breath, you leave The Pit, heading back out the door you came from.

Sportsmaster is helped out the other door by a team of guards.

You head back up to the stands, and reoccupy the seat next to Genghis.

“Here.”

Genghis offers you a bottle of water.

> “Thanks.”

After a quick examination, you determine that it’s safe to drink.

You catch Genghis looking at you with a mix of amusement and approval.

> “What?”

“Nothing, though I have to ask. A suplex? Really?”

> “Hey, whatever works.”

Genghis chuckles to himself.

“Yes, I suppose so. Looks like the next fight is about to start.”

“Let’s keep this wild momentum going, folks! Introducing the Hasaraguan Headhunter himself; Brutale!”

A slender man wearing a gargoyle costume enters The Pit. Unlike other contestants, he doesn’t even acknowledge the crowd’s presence, focusing entirely on the doorway his opponent will enter from.

“And his opponent, Deathstalker!”

Deathstalker enters The Pit. In his armor, he certainly paints an intimidating figure. Let’s see if he lives up to it.

Deathstalker and Brutale take it slow, trying to figure out each other’s limits.

Deathstalker’s strikes are powerful but clumsy, whereas Brutale’s are weaker and precise.

Neither seem to be totally comfortable with committing to an all-out assault early in the fight.

“What’s this!? Our first audience interjection!”

A small pillar rises from the center of the ring, with a number of throwing knives on top.

Brutale instantly makes a beeline for them, but Deathstalker manages to stop him.

Ironically, Deathstalker is able to use Brutale’s haste against him, landing several nasty hits before downing Brutale with a savage headbutt.

Deathstalker climbs on top of him and begins raining blows, only stopping when the announcer ends the fight.

“Winner, Deathstalker!”

Without any regard for his fallen opponent, Deathstalker simply heads back out the arena door.

> “Harsh. But effective.”

“Numbers 9 and 10, you’re on deck!”

“That’s my number. I’ll be back soon.”

You could watch Genghis’ match, but this is also an opportunity to try and chat with some of the other fighters.

You’ll stick around and watch how Genghis does. He’s your sort-of friend after all. Trainer? Respected colleague? Either way, you’d be a dick otherwise.

Intent on returning Genghis’ favor, you quickly head over to a small concessions booth and grab a few waters.

The guy behind the counter must’ve recognized you as one of the fighters, because they were on the house.

After examining them for tampering, you thankfully find nothing. That would’ve been awkward to deal with.

You get back to your seat, just as the announcer starts monologuing.

“Our next fight is shaping up to be something interesting! Presenting, Lady Vic!”

Genghis’ opponent enters The Pit. She’s certainly wearing an interesting outfit. Though there’s something to be said for wearing flexible clothing, what is with some of these outfits? Jesus, half of them could be dropped a lucky punk with a pistol.

“And her opponent, the Knife of Kyoto, Genghis!”

Your internal ranting about personal protection is silenced when Genghis takes the field, wearing his regular clothes and a balaclava.

Immediately, both Genghis and Lady Vic begin a fast-paced martial arts showdown.

Genghis holds his own, but is eventually overwhelmed by Lady Vic’s superior technique.

She manages to catch Genghis with a vicious combination of kicks to the chest and head, sending him crashing to the ground, unconscious.

“Winner, Lady Vic!”

She smirks, before performing a slight bow and exiting.

“Next, up would numbers 8 and 11 please report in!”

The guards drag Genghis out, which worries you a little bit. Hopefully he hasn’t been hurt too bad.

Your fears are assuaged when Genghis heads back to his seat a few minutes later, with several noticeable bruises on his face.

As you hand him one of the water bottles, you ask how he’s faring.

“Evidently, rather poorly. She’s got excellent technique. I hope we encounter each other again.”

During your conversation, you ignore the announcer’s introductions, more intent on ensuring Genghis’ safety.

However, when you spot the next two combatants, your previous conversation grinds to a halt.

> “They can’t be serious. I can’t actually be watching this. Sportsmaster knocked me out, and now I’m dreaming.”

You watch as a man dressed as one of the Three Musketeers gets his ass handed to him by a man wearing a similar outfit to yours, except for the gas mask.

The nutcase (who Genghis identifies as Cavalier) gets demolished by his opponent, with the match barely taking 5 minutes.

“Winner, Agent Orange!”

> “That was weird.”

“Everything’s weird. Sometimes it just sinks in a bit more. I might also have a concussion, so don’t take it as gospel.”

“For our final match of the first round, would numbers 6 and 7 prepare for battle!”

The now-named Agent Orange looks disdainfully down at his fallen foe, before quietly leaving The Pit.

> “By process of elimination, our next fight is between….”

“Kenshi and Enforcer. I know.”

> “Looks like Lady Vic didn’t clobber you that hard.”

The fight begins, and Kenshi is outclassed in every way. Speed, strength, skill, Enforcer dominates him in each.

As the fight progresses, you begin to notice something interesting. You recognize the style that Enforcer is using. Back in your military days, you had the opportunity to watch a few Green Beret instructors demonstrate CQC techniques.

His moves match almost picture-perfect with their lectures. Looks like you’re not the only ex-military hardcase in the tournament.

Kenshi puts forth a valiant effort, but quickly falls to Enforcer’s precise strikes.

“A slaughter. You’re going to need to be very careful if you end up facing him.”

He weakly resists, but eventually taps out, signaling Lady Vic’s victory.

“Winner, Lady Vic! Our next bout is between numbers 2 and 3!”

> “That was fast.”

“He must’ve known that he’d lose a test of endurance, and tried to come out full-blast immediately. Too bad he bungled it terribly, it might’ve worked.”

> “So, if the next fight is between Deathstalker and Double Dare, then…….fuck.”

“You’ll be matched with Enforcer. Don’t let him overwhelm you, otherwise he’ll take you down fast.”

The match begins and Double Dare leads Deathstalker on a merry chase throughout The Pit, constantly staying just out of reach. This serves to both enrage and tire Deathstalker, as he doggedly pursues her. Eventually, he manages to tire himself out, offering Double Dare the opportunity she needed.

She launches a series of small, but rapid blows, targeting critical joints and other areas, and slowly by steadily weakening Deathstalker.

Once she’s worked him over enough, she finishes him off with a gracefully devastating backflip transition into a hurricanrana.

Judging by Deathstalker’s unmoving form, it was very effective.

“Winner, Double Dare! Would numbers 5 and 7, please head on down!”

“Good luck. You’re going to need it.”

You shoot Genghis a small glare, before heading to The Pit.

Enforcer’s getting annoyed that he can’t get anything more than a glancing blow as you keep wearing him down.

Enforcer desperately pushes you back, the damage that your pummeling has inflicted has become plainly evident.

Where before he would’ve responded with a stinging counter-attack, it’s all he can do to barely stymie your assault.

He’s at his most vulnerable, and you’re in a position to capitalize.

It’s time to end this.

You throw a jab as a feint, causing Enforcer to reflexively block.

While his guard’s down, you dive forward, sweep his legs out from underneath him, and deftly maneuver him into a chokehold.

Ironically, this is the same technique that the Green Beret instructors showed you.

He does his best to dislodge you, but there’s no use.

You’re locked in tight, and there’s no way you’re letting him go.

After a tense struggle, Enforcer reluctantly taps out.

“Winner, Gunsmoke!”

The announcer’s proclamation is met with wild cheering from the crowd, and you spot Genghis with a massive smile on his face.

However, before you leave The Pit, there’s one last piece of business to attend to.

You extend your hand down to Enforcer, who’s struggling to pick himself up.

> “Good fight. Nearly had me for a while there.”

Despite himself, he accepts your help.

However, he uses this grip as leverage to pull you closer.

“You better win this. I won’t lose to anyone but the champion.”

With that, he makes his way out of the arena. A few of the guards attempt to help him, but he shoves them out of his way.

The grand prize better be worth all this. There is one bright side though; a harsh reminder that mastering your fundamental skills carries their own brand of strength.

He honestly thought that you were going to lose that one. Enforcer's a highly skilled opponent, to be fair. He kind of wishes that you had lost, mainly because you're getting a bit cocky A loss here would prevent it from happening in the field.

>>4009216
Thursday, at the same time. I'll post a reminder a few hours before.
>>
>>4009211
You mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries.

But nah, it was a good run Axis. Real nailbiter earlier on there, thought he was going to take us down. We’ve had some terrible luck though, eh? Had to fight two of the strongest contenders in the tournament, so far. Out of curiosity, how’s this final match gonna shake out? There’s three contenders remaining last I checked, between Double Dare, Lady Vic, and us, so is it gonna be some sort of free-for-all? Or is one of us gonna get a pass straight to the finals or the like?
>>
>>4009234
Unless I have any sudden ideas, it'll be a free-for-all. Figured that could have some fun possibilities.
>>
>>4009235
Should be fun, always liked threesomes. But honestly, best strategy is probably to team up on Lady Vic with Double Dare? She’s still got a slight edge on us, so better to leave Double Dare for last. Pretty confident we can take her. Teaming up’s legal, yeah?

I just thought of something, what happens when Joker puts Barbra in her chair?
>>
>>4009245
Oh yeah, and out of curiosity, would there be any chance of us getting invited to future events like this, if we happened to win the tournament? Seem like a good way to keep our CQC skills in tip-top shape, and get a look at who’s in town at the moment (Probably build some connections with others in our line of work, as well).
>>
>>4009253
Good work on the quest btw. Makes every tue/thur a good day.
>>
>>4009257
Sure. I'll be frank, I didn't expect the tournament to take this long, so it'll probably be smaller / faster paced.

Thanks, anon. I always enjoy hearing that people look forward to my sessions.

Had a good chuckle when Cavalier showed up. Brutale I guess one could expect, this being Bludhaven and all. Agent Orange rather reminds of Sandman, what with the gas mask and all. And as a side note, was rather surprised Death Stalker lasted as long as he did. Would’ve been funny if he made it to the finals.
>>
>>4009261
>so it'll probably be smaller / faster paced.

Certainly no objections there. It’s been fun, but definitely taken quite a while, for what I imagine was supposed to be a relatively minor daily event.
>>
>>4009263
Ironically, Agent Orange has a somewhat similar backstory to yours. A darker reflection, you could say.

>>4009265
I have a bad habit of underestimating the time scale of my side events.

>>4009271
You could, I suppose, if that ever happens. That would carry some serious consequences though.

That was a hell of a match.

You take a moment to calm yourself, letting the adrenaline fade from your system.

“Ladies and gentlemen! The final match of our normal bracket is upon us! However, we will have a brief intermission first, in the interest of fairness!”

That’s convenient. At least you get a chance to catch your breath.

You head back into the stands, settling in next to Genghis.

“Excellent match.”

> “Tell me about it. He was another good hit away from putting me out for good.”

“Guess that means you need to focus more on your training.”

> “You sure? Losing to me so often has got to get tiring.”

Genghis gives you a look that promises future retribution.

Eh, worth it.

> “Looks like I’m up against Double Dare and Lady Vic. Got any tips for me?”

Genghis sighs, before his face scrunches into a look of contemplation.

“Lady Vic is easily the more dangerous of the two, I’d be careful around her. Both of them seem to have a focus on agility and precision. If you can counter that, you’ll do alright.”

You silently absorb Genghis’ advice. Meanwhile, you’ve got some time before you’re called back into The Pit.

You never heard anyone mention that contestants couldn’t team up so…….

> “I’ll be back soon, just need to handle something.”

You bid Genghis a hasty farewell, before scanning the crowd and searching for your intended target.

It’s not too hard to pick out the Double Dare sisters, what with the bright outfits and all.

As you head their way, the longer-haired one notices you and nudges her sister.

“It appears that we have a guest, Margot.” She says in a lilted voice with a soft French accent.

“So it would seem, Aliki. Tell me, what can I do for you, Gunsmoke?” She places a teasing emphasis on your name.

Now for the sales pitch.

> “I came to make you an offer. As the finals are going to be a free-for-all, I wanted to work with you to defeat Lady Vic.”

“Does the mighty Gunsmoke feel so little confidence in his skills?” She says in a mocking tone.

> “No, I’m certain I can do this with or without your support. It would be helpful, but I’ll win regardless.” You state confidently.

“Hmmm….. and once she is defeated?”

> “Then we settle this ourselves.”

She thinks for a moment, and regards you in a new light, taking you seriously for possibly the first time.

“We have an accord.”

> “Good. I’ll see you in the ring.”

As you head back to your seat, the now-named Aliki whispers something into her sister’s ear that you can’t quite make out. Whatever it is, it’s enough to make them both laugh.

> (TBC)
>>

Mmm, 50/50 she tries to backstab us and leave most of the fighting with Vic to us so she can swoop in once one of us is exhausted, but that's still better then us getting double-teamed.
>>
>>4011516

You head back to your seat, and spend a few minutes re-hydrating and preparing yourself for the fight to come.

Lady Vic’s match against Genghis proved that she’s no pushover, but with Double Dare’s help, you should come out on top.

“Attention, everyone! The final match will begin in 5 minutes! Contestants, head to your places!”

> “That’s my cue.”

“Kick her ass for me.”

A short time later, you enter The Pit, with Lady Vic entering from the other side, and Double Dare entering via a previously unused third door.

“Ladies, and Gentlemen, the fight you’ve been waiting to see! Contestants, are you ready!? BEGIN!”

The match starts off fairly tame.

Lady Vic keeps her sights trained on the both of you, in case anyone tries a sneaky maneuver.

Double Dare seems to be waiting for you to take the lead.

You decide to…….

You stay firmly entrenched in Lady Vic’s bubble, constantly harassing her with a series of combination strikes, hooks, and kicks.

Despite this, she manages to avoid most of Double Dare’s attempted blindsiding attacks.

She doesn’t come out unscathed, as your myriad of strikes has started to take a toll on her.

So far, the only real damage you’ve taken is that your back is starting to hurt. From carrying this fight.

You’re starting to think that Double Dare might be failing on purpose, so that you tire yourself out beating on Lady Vic.

Either that, or she needs to get her head in the game.

A failure, but that's fine. A failure for Double Dare too. Writing.
>>
>>4011697

You withdraw and gesture for Double Dare to pick up the slack.

You’ve been doing the heavy lifting so far, it’s only fair that she take the lead for a while.

With a huff, she quickly fills the gap you left behind, beginning a series of acrobatic maneuvers.

While she does so, you try and analyze Lady Vic’s style, but can’t find any obvious weaknesses.

Double Dare and Lady Vic go at it. It quickly becomes clear that Double Dare is at risk of being overwhelmed, with Lady Vic at a clear advantage.

You decide to…….

> Intervene on Double Dare’s behalf.

Ugh.

Guess you’ll have to salvage this before it gets out of hand. She better appreciate this.

While Lady Vic is distracted, you carefully position yourself, before blindsiding her with a brutal haymaker to the back of the head.

Poor sportsmanship? Absolutely.

Effective?

She goes crashing to the ground, and it doesn’t look she’ll be getting up anytime soon.

Sweet victory.

Double Dare took a few hits, nothing serious, but Lady Vic definitely left a mark before you put her down.

All that’s left is to extinguish your temporary alliance.

“Thanks for the save.”

> “Don’t thank me just yet.”

Your remark is met with an attempted low blow, which you dodge with ease.

“Should’ve known it wouldn’t be that easy.”

Your response is to……

You’re still relatively fresh, whereas Double Dare has taken a few hits.

Still, weakening her before going for any sort of concentrated attack would be a wise choice.

With that in mind, you go fishing, throwing a few jabs and hooks, with the intent of drawing her guard up.

And boy, does she deliver.

When Double Dare takes her eye off the proverbial ball, you nail her with a vicious side-kick to the breadbasket.

After she involuntarily doubles over, you grab the back of her head and pull it down, while simultaneously raising your knee.

The result is a devastating knee strike, full force into her face.

You feel something crunch under the impact, and upon closer examination….

Yep, you absolutely just broke her nose.

She’s definitely not down for the count yet, but if this keeps up, it won’t take much more.

It’s time to end this. Now.

While Double Dare is disoriented from the whole “broken nose” thing you quietly slide behind her and put her in a chokehold.

> “Tap out, or else.”

To her credit, she tries to headbutt you. Unfortunately for her, you kept a firm grip on her head, keeping her from being able to pull it off.

Feisty. Still, she valiantly struggles, and even manages to get an elbow strike in here or there.

It’s all for naught though, as your grip is like iron, unceasing as you maintain the hold.

As you feel the last of her strength wane, she finally taps out.

You release your hold, and she falls to her knees, desperately trying to catch her breath.

“Ladies and gentlemen, your champion, GUNSMOKE!”

The crowd goes wild, and begins chanting your name.

Your attentions is drawn to Double Dare, still recovering from your near-strangling.

You’ve never been the chivalrous type, but……

Double Dare stares incredulously at the hand you offer her.

> “Come on, up and at ‘em.”

“Mon Dieu! You broke my nose! And now you’re…..”

> “I mean, you did try to get me in the family jewels.”

She growls to herself, before taking your hand and getting back on her feet.

She begins to storm off, before stopping when she hears you say….

> “Good fight.”

She mutters something to herself in French, before sighing deeply.

“To you as well. However, I WILL have a rematch! Understood?”

You chuckle and give her a nod of approval.

With that, she turns on her heels and gracefully exits.

Weird people in Blüdhaven, that’s for sure.

As you leave The Pit, there is a squad of guards waiting just outside of the door.

“We’re here to escort you to the boss, sir. To collect your prize.”

Seeing nothing wrong with this, but staying on your toes in case, you follow them.

They lead you through a series of hallways, until you reach the outside of a conference room with tinted windows.

One of the guards knocks on the door.

“Boss, Gunsmoke’s here.”

From inside the room, you hear a deep and gravelly voice say “Send him in.”

You open the door, and are met with an interesting sight.

Behind a very large table, is quite possibly the biggest man you’ve ever seen.

“Name’s Blockbuster. Take a seat.” He says, indicating to one of the chairs in the room.

You do as he says, and settle in.

Surprisingly comfy.

“I’m sure you’re a busy man, so I won’t waste your time with a pitch.”

He places a small silver suitcase on the table, before gently sliding it over to you.

“Here’s your prize. Just know that if you ever need to relocate to Blüdhaven, I could use muscle like you.”

Blockbuster gestures towards the case he gave you.

“Go ahead, check it out. I won’t be offended or anything.”

You open the case, and its contents are surprisingly disappointing.

All that’s inside are a pair of red vials.

> “If you don’t mind me asking, what exactly is this?”

He stares at you incredulously, before breaking out into roaring laughter.

“You mean you did all that, without even knowing what the prize is!? You’re either the craziest or luckiest bastard I’ve ever met!”

It does seem a little foolish when you put it like that.

“Still, never did answer your question. That right there, is none other than Xenothium.”

> FIN

That's all for tonight folks! I've got a few announcements to make. I will NOT be able to run next week, as college is starting up once again, and I want to get my schedule confirmed before having a session.

Next, chances are that our Tues / Thurs schedule will no longer be feasible, so I'll let everyone know what the updated session calendar will be.

Lastly, I'll be around for a while to answer questions, handle concerns, and for everyone to mock my poor understanding of English.

Have a good evening!

>Xenothium
I hear that stuff is dangerous. And unstable.
>>
>>4012156
BAD BAD JUJU
>>
>>4012156

It's a highly unstable compound known for its high energy output and destructive qualities. If you ever watched Teen Titans, it powered Red X's suit.

Pretty baller, a vial of the stuff could do serious damage to the city.
>>
>>4012144
>Xenothium

Oh, that’s....cool, I guess? Not really useful to us though. Maybe we can sell it to someone or something.

>>4012156
It’s basically an incredibly powerful, incredibly unstable chemical compound. Cool stuff, but, eh, not really useful to us, unless we can find some tech whizz to make us something powered with it, like a gun or a super suit. Unless Apokoliptian stuff is compatible with it or something.

Thanks for the session, Axis. Too bad about not running next week, but real life comes first. Out of curiosity, any particular reason Xenothium was the prize? I picked Xenothium for a handful of different reasons. I wanted a good prize, something worth all of the effort, but not something incredibly overpowered.

It also couldn't be something ultra-amazing, given the caliber of your opponents.

I also wanted something that has some versatility to it, let the anons have a say. Despite all of the memeing, the anons do have genuinely cool ideas sometimes.

For the future, I have a few plans in mind. You’ve got 2 vials, so you’ll basically be able to modify / construct 2 different things.

You’ll have several options ranging from integrating it into your weapons and / or armor, to having it be the power source for something massive, to just building a nasty bomb. Creativity is the limit.

Plus, it's a nice callback to Teen Titans.

(If you fuckers actually choose to drink this, I will let you. The consequences of your decisions will rain down upon you.)

I’m definitely going to make a joke write-in when we get to ask Blockbuster what it is next session.

> So do I, like, drink it, or...?

That aside, cool. Guess we’ll need to find someone that can actually work with the stuff, but we can probably do something cool with it. Maybe we can work it into our suit, make it shoot beams or teleport or project a force field or something like that. Though I guess we’d need to find someone that could work with both Apokoliptian tech and Xenothium then. Doubt we’re going to build a bomb or giant death ray or something with it, anyways, we’re not quite that hammy. So would we need to find more of it to replenish whatever tech we have built with it’s supplies every once in a while? I seem to remember the stuff running out in the show.

>>
>>4012277
Fair enough. So uh, how tough is it gonna be to find someone that can actually, y’know, do anything with Xenothium? Are we going to need to kidnap some scientist? Or can we just ring up a supervillain genius like Lex or whoever and pay them (Or do some work for them or whatever) to whip something up?
>>
>>4012292
It won't be too complicated. A few of your contacts might know someone who could help.
>>
>>4012295

>>

Would there be a chance of anything good happening if we chose to drink the Xenothium?
>>

Also, you're not badgering me. I enjoy answering questions. I keeps me honest, and it feels good knowing that players are invested.

>>4012313
This question worries me. There will be a very small chance of a positive effect, if you choose to drink it. You animals.
>>
>>4012313
Probably be like drinking kerosene. You can. But it won't really help you out. Giving it to a fantastic chemist to make a HOT NEW ENERGY DRINK though might be viable. A little bit of chemical engineering can make some crazy shit. I half expect Bane's VENOM to be a mixture of sulfuric acid and glowstick juice.
>>
>>4012328
>There will be a very small chance of a positive effect, if you choose to drink it. You animals.

Axis you fool! You’ve fallen victim to one of the classic questing blunders: Telling anons that there’s a possibility, however impossibly slim, of a stupid act benefiting them somehow. We’re never going to be able to convince them not to drink the most dangerous koolaid now.
>>
>>4012345
I realized my mistake almost immediately, but I'll never admit it.
>>
>>4012339
Giving a sample of it to some genius chemist and seeing if they can fumble their way into a super serum could be one viable usage of the stuff, I guess. Better then just popping the cap and chugging the stuff or pouring it into a bottle of vodka or whatever crazy shit the anons would come up with otherwise, at any rate. Get some Hourman-style drug out of it, if we’re lucky, or maybe even something long-term, since the stuff seems to have a pretty crazy shelf-life. Maybe we can give some to Bane, wean him off of venom. Anything that makes your veins glow green can’t be terribly healthy.
>>

We could probably use one of the vials to give our Apokoliptian armour some upgrades, yeah. Would be at least one good use of a vial. Otherwise up in the air on what we use the other one for. I guess we could upgrade the carbine, but we barely ever use it so it’d feel like a bit of a waste. Seeing if we could get some sort of super serum made could be fun as well, though there’s no way to know for sure if Xenothium’s actually usable in that manner. We aren’t really the “Create a giant bomb/death ray to blow up Gotham” type, so that’s obviously out. Can’t think up much else, besides just pawning it off for cash or something with more obvious uses for us, like some magical knowledge or artifacts.
>>
>>4012435
Eh, we’re still nominally a henchmen who does stuff for other people so we can get paid, so I think the title’s pretty applicable. Doubt we’re going to go solo or whatever anytime soon, I don’t think running some sort of crime syndicate or cabal or what have you would particularly appeal to Sean. He seems more the thrill-seeker type that likes getting his hands dirty.
>>

It's in Axis' best interest to try and avoid killing the character off as much as possible since he's as much a part of this game as we are unless he really wants to stop so permadeath would mean it's over and all the effort was just wasted. Out of curiosity, is the Court situation going to resolve itself organically in the near future, or are we going to have to stick our head into it personally if we want the ominous owl-shaped shadow looming over us dealt with any time soon? Because I mean, they’ve probably got some sweet magical loot, but on the other hand, that one guy ran a gauntlet of Nightwing and Batman, so not really sure I want to poke that particular bee hive and have our ass kicked. I guess we could ring up Batgirl in our Jonah Thema alias and get some help dealing with them? But I feel like Batman would confiscate all the cool magical goodies if we did that.

I've got a few plans regarding the Court, but there will be many different ways of handling it.

Yeah, I feel it would be like drinking car battery acid.

Which DC characters are your favorite?
>>

Cool, looking forward to it. I've got one more question, this one regarding the mechanics, particularly with regards to unarmed combat. So, just to clarify, I seem to remember you saying that you were dividing up the previous general unarmed skill into different styles, which conferred different bonuses to different types of attacks depending the style practiced, in our case MCMAP (Because of our military background). This correct?
>>
>>4025894
That's the long and short. Figured it would add some spice, but I might roll it back if it gets too cumbersome.

>>4025748
Depends on the incarnation. I generally like Red Hood, Mr. Freeze, Raven, Captain Cold, Black Manta, Blackfire, Reverse Flash, and a smattering of others. I generally like the DC villains more than the heroes, they've usually got a bit more personality to them.

By the way, according to canon, the Atlantean language is derived from Ancient Greek. Interpret that statement as you will.

Okay, I was just sort of wondering how that...works, I guess? Like, is it a stacking bonus, for example if we picked up boxing and got up to whatever level gives a +10 in unarmed with it, would it combine with our MCMAP to give us a +30 when striking? Or is it more of a singular unstackable bonus, with different styles conferring bonuses to different types of attacks? If it’s the former then I feel like that would kind of snowball out of control (Especially with characters like Batman or Bane who have supposedly mastered 10+ martial arts and developed their own styles on top of that), and if it’s the latter, I’m not really sure why we’d pick up anything else. MCMAP apparently confers bonuses to holds, strikes, environmental attacks and throws, which...kind of covers everything I think, unless there’s a style out there that lets us shoot Hadoukens or fly or something.

Oh, boy
>>

I planned on it being a stacking bonus. My reasoning being that training one style to perfection will take quite a while, so it could be better to supplement it by mixing a few others. A more specialized martial arts style may provide a large boost to only one type of attack.

As I mentioned, if it gets out of control / gets too unwieldy, I'll roll it back a little or just throw harder shit at you.
>>
>>4025442
I don't think it's superficial because you put a lot of effort into this. Does Nightwing know we are around right now?
>>
>>4025959
Excellent question! Also, a convenient way for me to demonstrate how actions may have unintended consequences.

Due to your.....handling of Batgirl and Robin, Nightwing is currently in Gotham, helping to keep things stable with the Batfamily down a few hands. Otherwise, he could've interfered in this event.
>>
>>4025953
Hm, right on. Guess picking up training in a few specialized martial arts like Judo, Jiu-jitsu or Boxing while slowly working on our MCMAP basis is the way to go. Maybe we could see about finding Enforcer for that, he’s a good bit more skilled in it then we are. Could probably interact with Bane for the more specialized ones, since he apparently knows a bunch of them. Not sure how we’d convince him to teach us though.

Him losing us thanks to the bar gave me a good laugh. Must have been embarrassing reporting it back to Bats.

Given that fighting tournament and those crazy DC rolls, what would you estimate adding fighting batman unarmored without his gadgets and shit with Sean as he is right now? And both Sean and him with Gadgets.

Are we like, nightwing tier or something or do we have a long ways to go?

I would recommend we also brush up on Urban warfare tactics and strategy rather than being a particularly strong mook who can cast magic.
>>
>>4025953
I'd recommend a weighted stack OP. Something like first style adds 100% of bonus but second adds only 50, third adds 25, fourth adds 20, fifth and on add 10. Still incentive to learn multiple without getting preposterously out of hand.

when is the next session?
>>
>>4027181
It’s probably going to be some time, since Axis is off for the week to get back into the swing of college.
>>
Greetings all, sorry for the delay.

In pure hand-to-hand? He'd wipe the floor with you. If you were fully armed and went all out? It would be very, very difficult.

In a straight unarmed fight, you'd likely lose to Nightwing at this stage, but if you leveraged some of your other skills, you could give him a challenge.

This thread looks like it'll be dying soon, so I'll probably post the next scheduled session time on the Pastebin over the weekend.

Where do Gotham city sirens stand compared to Sean? Hand to hand wise
>>
>>4030031

You could probably beat Harley if you can get a few good shots, but her agility would make it tricky.

Catwoman would be harder, for similar reasons as above.

Poison Ivy wouldn't be too hard, but it's not like you're going to have a straight fight with her. You gotta deal with the pheromones, the plants, and any brainwashed mooks she has around.

If you're still looking for suggestions on hand to hand.

I would suggest having having a single unarmed skill, but individual styles act as perks that can add bonii in certain situations. With additional mastery in a specific style improving said perk.

Like BJJ addning bonii to ground fighting or Muay Thai giving you a bonus to crippling someone.
