The Lighthouse War is over, but conflict still continues.

With Erusea's defeat at the hands of the Osean Federation and the International United Nations, the imperial nation has splintered into a confusing mess of separatists, freedom fighters, warlords, rogue military factions, and those seeking to profit from the chaos. Worse, Erusea's many automated drone factories still remain intact, waiting for new masters to come to claim them.

The Usean continent remains in crisis, and it's up to a new generation of pilots to face this next generation threat...

You are MILLY, the "Red Tail", a Belkan Air Force pilot fighting for the IUN!

"We'll clear the way of any potential ground threats!" Indigo Lead says as her flight of Gripens takes the lead ahead of Siegfriend. "We're trusting you to keep an eye out for any more drones!"

"Better said than done." Bandit grunts.

And you had to agree. Just looking on your radar and out out your canopy, the entire sky was just a flurry of chaos and confusion. Erusean planes were flying every which way, attempting to figure out who was who. Even your own Belkan squadrons weren't above suspicion, considering you your squadron had just shot down a fake Indigo Squadron.

Currently, according to your IFF, Schnee was still flying high altitude top cover and Grun was covering the fleet, all according to their assigned roles. However, given this situation, you couldn't exactly blindly trust your IFF, or even your own eyes, unfortunately.

"MILLY. I MAY BE ABLE TO HELP DETECT POTENTIAL DRONE ACTIVITY."

"Huh?" You blink. That wasn't on your radio. It was coming from an internal speaker in you cockpit.

"THIS IS SWALLOW. VICKY HAD DOWNLOADED ME INTO YOUR PLANE'S SYSTEM." Swallow explains.

"You're kidding." You blink in surprise.

"UNFORTUNATELY, MY CAPABILITIES ARE STILL LIMITED IN THIS STATE. HOWEVER AFTER ANALYZING DRONE BEHAVIOR IN THE PREVIOUS BATTLE I BELIEVE I CAN PREDICT FUTURE DRONE ACTIVITY WITH 76.2% ACCURACY."

>I'll take any help I can get at this point.

"Honestly, I'll take any help I can at this point." You grunt.

"AFFIRMATIVE. ANALYZING RADAR DATA."

Your IFF tags then begin to change color as several "blue" contacts suddenly turn yellow to indicate their status was unknown. There was... quite a few drones mixed in with the Erusean flights. At least a dozen more. You try warning them via radio again, but all the Erusean channels are completely blocked out, either because of high traffic or more nefariously, electronic jamming.

"THIS IS MY BEST ESTIMATION WITH MY CURRENTLY AVAILABLE DATA." Swallow informs you. "YOU WILL NEED TO CLOSE TO VISUAL RANGE IN ORDER TO CONFIRM STATUS OF TARGETS."

You'd have to be flying damn close to them then, which would also take you out of formation with the rest of the squadron and Siegfried.

You decide to stick with the squadron. Bandit and Misono were taking the lead just ahead of Siegfried while you and Vicky ended up taking the rear. You didn't mind, since it put you in a better position to keep an eye on the Erusean planes tailing you. Quite a few of them were suspected drones, too...

Seeing that the Erusean planes were still keeping their distance, you take the chance to glance back ahead of you to check on Siegfried. The squadron of helicopters were continuing on their way, weaving through skyscrapers of downtown Farbanti when you catch sight of movement on the roofs. At first you think it's just people or reporters trying to get a better look at the spectacle outside, until you see people carrying very large, tube like devices on their shoulders.

"POSSIBLE MANPADS TEAM DETECTED." Swallow warns.

"I can see that!" You snap as you key your radio to Siegfried's frequency. "Siegfried! Break! Break! You've got MANPADS on the rooftops!"

"Roger, breaking!" Siegfried 1-1 shouts as the helicopters suddenly veer away from their route, dropping flares as they go. A pair of missiles lance out from the rooftops but are thankfully thrown off by the flares and slam into the side of a skyscraper, shattering dozens of glass windows.

"Indigo! Can you do anything about those!?" Bandit yells.

"We got eyes, but they're posted on civilian buildings!" Indigo Lead warns, her Gripens circling around. "And we have no way of know if they're occupied or not!"

"I got an alternate idea." You grin devilishly. "How about we give them a taste of a nice sonic boom point blank? I'm sure a few popped eardrums is gonna keep them down for a bit."

"Oh, that's devious." Indigo Lead gasps.

"Better than bombing them, I suppose." Bandit sighs. "Are you ready to do it, Red?"

"Always!" You chuckle madly.

"ERROR. THERE IS NO LOGICAL BASIS FOR THIS COURSE OF ACTION." Swallow whines.

You're pressed back into your seat as your Su-47 lurches forward in a sudden burst of speed. Everything outside your canopy becomes a blur for a brief second as your plane thunders straight through downtown Farbanti, your sonic boom shattering windows in its wake. Close behind, Vicky, Misono, and even Bandit follow suit, sending three more deafening booms echoing throughout downtown.

"There's your window, Siegfried! Go go go!" Indigo Lead urges.

"We're moving!" Siegfried calls out as the helicopter squadron regroups, making a beeline straight for the coast.

"INCOMING CONTACTS DETECTED." Swallow warns.

Sure enough, it looks like this was the last straw for the drones, as a number of the suspected drones begin breaking formation and moving to pursue Siegfried.

"Go get 'em, Schnee!" You call out.

"Roger, we'll handle these drones. You're on the home stretch now." Schnee Lead replies.

Overhead, you see the first volley of LAAMs dive down from the clouds, slamming into the lead drone planes and instantly disintegrating them into clouds of debris.

"Fighting has broken out once again over Farbanti as it looks like Belkan fighters are shooting down Erusean planes! Yet I can see other Erusean planes nearby refusing to intervene..."

Your radar shows the drones' formation breaking up as they suddenly come under attack. Good. As long as they're dodging missiles they couldn't chase after you or Siegfried.

"T-This is going pretty well, isn't it?" Vicky wonders.

"Hey, don't jinx it." You chide your wingmate. "We're only halfway there."

By this point, Siegfried had reached the shoreline and was now over open water. It was only a few hundred more meters until they could reach the fleet-

Suddenly, one of the frigates in the fleet explodes, showering the water around it with flaming debris as the hull snaps in half and rapidly sinks.

"The Maxwell is hit! She's sinking!"

"Who the hell fired that shot? Radar, what are you doing!?"

"Moving in to pick up survivors!"

Suddenly, a very familiar plane blasts past the fleet at blinding speed, followed by a squadron of Su-35s following in perfect formation.

"Unknown contacts! Unknown contacts!"

"Grun, back off! Raven will handle this!" You call out, pulling your stick up to climb to a proper fighting altitude. "That's an ace level enemy right there! It'll eat you alive!"

"B-but-"

"Red's right. Stay back." Bandit instructs. "Pick off any of the Su-35s you can isolate, but leave the Raven to us."

"A-Acknowledged." Grun Lead replies hesitantly.

"That formation flying..." Misono mutters as the Raven and its Su-35 wingmates wheel around for another pass. "It's too precise. Too well timed. Are they really human?"

"I-It's possible END has drones slaved to their plane." Vicky remarks. "They're using the Raven itself as their command and control node!"

"THERE IS AN 87.7% CHANCE THAT VICKY'S THEORY IS CORRECT." Swallow weighs in. "SIGNAL JAMMING RECOMMENDED."

"What if we can jam their communications?" You wonder.

"The fleet is equipped to do that, but it'll interfere with our comms as well. They also won't be able to provide effective fire support as long as the jamming is active." Bandit clarifies.

""Well, I'm fine with that." You remark.

"We can take them!" Misono chimes in.

"H-hopefully!" Vicky stammers.

"ODDS OF SUCCESS WOULD BE 65.2% IN YOUR FAVOR." Swallow adds.

"Lutjens, we need wide area communications jamming." Bandit calls out. "We need to disrupt the coordination of these drones!"

"Roger that, we're powering up our ECM equipment!" Lutjens replies. "All units, prepare for comms interference!"

You wince as your radio suddenly explodes with static and white noise.

"Ravens, can you hear me?" Bandit queries, his voice fuzzy and warped.

"Barely!" Misono's voice sounds like she's in a heavy rainstorm.

"Hello? Hello?" Vicky wails, her voice warbling unnaturally from the interference.

"I can read you all." You say as you check your comm frequencies. Everything else was dead. Looks like you were down to short range squadron comms for now.

However, the enemies didn't seem to be faring so well, either. The tight formation the Su-35s were keeping with the Raven suddenly breaks up as the individual drones lose cohesion and fall back on their pre-programmed routines.

However, even with the degradation of its wingmates, the Raven continues to barrel towards you.

Suddenly, your canopy is filled with blue light as END starts firing freaking lasers at you! Did Ravens have freaking pulse lasers as a standard or something!? Suddenly, your plane shudders as the laser bolts find their mark, punching some holes clean through your right wing.

"Shit!" You grunt. "Some help would be nice now!"

The rest of your squadron comes in behind END, letting off a volley of missiles. However, END was quick, pulling off a sharp, almost 90 degree turn to throw off the missiles. Thankfully, though, Vicky is able to keep her nose on END for a few critical seconds, letting off a volley of cannon fire. Sparks fly across the fuselage of the Raven as cannon rounds punch into it, but the craft remains flying.

The END continues to fall back, blasting past the Su-35 drones which were just now starting to respond, moving to attack. No doubt END was using them as distractions to find a new opening to ambush you.

"The evacuees are loaded up!' Lutjen announces, his ship's more powerful comms cutting through the interference. "The fleet will now be withdrawing to open water! All remaining fighters are to follow at their own discretion!"

Your missile warning alarm screams as the Su-35 drones fire off their missiles in a staggered wave, filling your canopy with smoke and fire.

"Aaaaah! We're gonna die!" Vicky wails.

"Keep going forward! If we close the distance fast enough we can get past before they have a chance to track!" You assure her.

Sure enough, the missiles sail harmlessly by as your momentum carries you past their minimum effective range. On your radar, you can see Bandit and Misono as well as elements from Grun slam into the Su-35s head on. Schnee also joins in, hitting the drones behind as they move to catch up with the fleet.

That just leaves END, who was making their way to Farbanti's Flooded District, no doubt to use the various ruined high rises as cover and hazards to lure you into.

Maybe thanks to the damage that Vicky had inflicted earlier, the both of you re able to gain on END as they try to make a break for the Flooded District. Seemingly realizing this, END pulls an almost impossibly tight reverse loop, putting themselves at an inverted head on approach towards both you and Vicky.

You nearly whoop out loud as you see all four missiles slam into END, shredding the Raven to pieces. However, you swear that in a split second before the missiles impacted, the front section of the craft detached from the fuselage.

"Haha! We finally nailed the fucker!" You whoop.

"I-I think they ejected or something!" Vicky cries.

You look again, and sure enough, it looks like your eyes weren't lying to you before. It looked like the pointed front end of the Raven really did detach and was gliding down towards the water on a pair of stubby, pop out wings like a fat chicken trying to fly. Before either your or Vicky can do anything about it, though, the pod plunges into the water and disappears.

"That plane has WAY too many surprises." Vicky groans.

"You're telling me." You sigh. "Well, hopefully the fleet might be able to catch them?"

"The fleet has already withdrawn to open water and the Eruseans are starting to get more aggressive in the requests for us to leave." Bandit interjects, his F-15 finally catching up to you both. "We unfortunately don't have the time or means to conduct a search and recovery operation."

"Which means they might come back again." Vicky sighs.

"Well, the plane was completely destroyed this time, so hopefully this means we won't be seeing them in the air for awhile." Misono says helpfully.

"I look forward to beating their ass again!" You laugh.

"That's the spirit!" Misono laughs as well.

"I'd rather not face them again..." Vicky groans.

"Girls, focus. We need to link up with the fleet before the Eruseans decide to shoot us down." Bandit reminds you all. "Let's go."

As you all follow Bandit out of Farbanti, you notice a the flock of news helicopters was already waiting at the mouth of the bay, apparently looking to get on last photo op. You're in a good enough mood now that you decide to indulge them a bit, dipping down and giving them a nice, good look at your plane before boosting away.

Heh, you wonder how things were gonna be like back home...

By some miracle, out of that entire mess, the relief force managed to get out of Farbanti with few losses. The fleet lost a frigate along with a portion of its crew, but none of the fighters were shot down and more importantly, not a single evacuee was lost, though there were some light injuries among them and the troops sent to assist them.

And with that, the fleet began to make its way to Selatapura to refuel and resupply before taking the Embassy evacuees the rest of the way back to Belka proper.

Raven Squadron meanwhile decided to stick with the fleet, giving the other squadrons a chance to go ahead to Selatapura to rest. After all, they had been continuously keeping watch over the fleet all this time. Also, with END taken down, no imminent threat to the fleet was expected.

As such, you were casually flying with the rest of your squadron over the fleet. Swallow had gone into sleep mode and was silent. That honestly gave you time to think over some things, the like the spy leaking info to these One Belka remnants. The existence of these One Belka remnants in the first place. And their involvement in the Embassy situation. Just what were their aims?

"Red." Bandit speaks up on a direct frequency. "Something the matter?"

"Huh?" You pause. "What do you mean?"

"You've been awfully quiet. Normally you'd be singing and cheering over a big victory, especially taking down an enemy ace like that." Bandit points out.

"This whole damn thing has been bothering me!" You blurt. "How the hell is OB all over the damn place? Why the hell do they keep hounding us? And why the hell were they at Farbanti!?"

"One thing at a time." Bandit sighs. "I was afraid all this was going to come up sooner or later."

"So what the hell are we supposed to do?!" You groan.

"Just like we do in any mission." Bandit says calmly. "We identify the threats and neutralize them one by one."

"Right, right." You sigh.

"But you know, the moment we get back, they're going to want us to go back to Belka for publicity." Bandit points out. "This was the first time in a long time Belka was able to successfully pull off a major military action on its own."

"So what you're saying is, we got a lot of shit to take care of." You groan.

"Essentially, yes." Bandit confirms.

"Yeah, I guess that's good for them too." You nod in agreement. "Well, just gotta look good for some cameras, right?"

"Um, I'll tell you about it when we land." You assure him. "It'll make sense. Trust me."

"All right, then." Bandit says. "We're almost back at Selatapura, anyways.

Sure enough, just ahead, you could see the familiar sight of the Lighthouse lancing up into the sky. You finally part ways with the fleet as it makes its way to the bay, and your squadron heads for the air base, which was now much more crowded with all the Belkan planes filling up the available hangar space. Still, you're able to land and find an open hangar, where Mead is already waiting for you.

"Can't help but make a scene for yourselves, huh?" Mead grins as she helps you out of your cockpit.

"Already heard about it?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Heard about it? The whole damn thing was being broadcast live!" Mead laughs. "It's definitely got a lot of people talking, that's for sure!"

"I can guess what they're talking about." You roll your eyes. "A resurgent Belka! They'll be invading Ustio again any day now!"

"Yeah, that's what a lot of people are screeching about." Mead chuckles. "Who knows, they might be right!"

"Ha ha, very funny." You grunt.

"Hey, don't take it personally. It's a time to celebrate!" Mead laughs. "All your Belkan buddies have pretty much invaded the bar, if you want to go look for them. Otherwise, I guess you're free to go anywhere, I guess."

"Okay, thanks for the tip." You nod.

"And you'll have to explain to me how you got your wing turned into a pincushion!" Mead continues as she slaps you on the back very, very hard. "I'm sure it'll be a lovely story!"

"Uh, yeah, totally!" You laugh nervously as you make your escape.

As you step out of the hangar, you could see Bandit making his way over to the admin building. No doubt to get an update from Command. You also noticed Alanna and Angela standing off at a secluded section of the runway, casually drinking beers. What were they both doing out there?

"Milly! Are you coming with us?" Vicky yelps as she and Misono wave at you. Looks like they were headed to the bar to join the celebration.

Well, you were sure everybody was still going to be drinking and partying late in to the night, so you decide to tag along with Bandit for the moment. You quickly catch up to him about halfway to the admin building.

"So, what was it that you wanted to tell me in private?" Bandit asks.

"Well, um..." You instinctively look around to see if anyone was listening, but you were in the middle of an empty runway. "I actually managed to salvage a working AI and I've sorta been using it."

"...ah." Bandit nods. "That makes sense."

"...huh?" You pause. "That's it? You're not angry or anything?"

"Should I be?" Bandit frowns. "Support AIs aren't illegal. Just rare."

"R-right, I guess so." You concede.

"Still, I suppose you salvaged it from the Wyvern, didn't you?" Bandit raises an eyebrow. "It's the only thing we've encountered recently that would hold something so advanced."

"Yeah... pretty much right on the money." You sigh.

"Well, keep it close. AIs are valuable things." Bandit instructs as he opens the door.

"Nooooothing." You say quickly.

Bandit quickly takes your cue.

"Just the value of the power of friendship." He says with the straightest and most serious expression possible.

"Ha, that's a good one!" Karla chuckles. "Anyways, good job out there, you two. That op was a huge fucking mess but you managed to pull through, somehow!"

"Well, I mean, it is ME, after all." You cross your arms smugly.

"Uh huh, and just a few weeks ago you were bawling like a baby after running into your first enemy ace!" Karla chuckles as she ruffles your hair.

"H-hey! Quit it!" You scowl as you swat her hands away in annoyance.

"Sorry, but if you're gonna act like a brat you're gonna get treated like one!" Karla winks.

"Ladies, please." Bandit sighs. "Have you been able to figure anything out?"

"Oh yeah, looks like your little heroics forced OB to show their hand, and in turn, their involvement." Karla suddenly gets serious.

"But why would they want to attack the Embassy? Try to start a war between Belka and Erusea?" You frown.

"Because OB wanted Belka riled up by any means necessary." Karla says darkly. "If it meant sacrificing a few hundred Belkans, then so be it."

"It would certainly make Belka look the victim while simultaneously tarnishing Erusea's image even further." Bandit nods. "But that would almost certainly start a war between the two nations."

"Both the government and Grunder crunched the numbers." Karla explains darkly. "And both studies agreed that in Erusea's current state, Belka stands a real shot at winning if it got serious."

"But not without blood." Bandit narrows his eyes.

"Lots of blood. Belkan blood." Karla nods.

"That's pretty sick." You blanch. "And what's that going to serve? Erusea's not even on the same continent as Belka! How's that even going to help us?"

"It's their 'big picture.'" Karla sighs. "Right now, Belka is slowly rebuilding its war capability, but the biggest limiting factor is the loss of military and institutional experience. The Belkan War was decades ago, and many of the veterans have aged out or have no wish to continue serving. The future Belkan military needs to build experience, and there's nothing quicker and more efficient than a war of vengeance against an international pariah nobody will defend."

"It does make a sick sort of sense." Bandit nods in agreement. "Moving against a neighbor would instantly ring alarm bells, but not Erusea, because it's nowhere near Belka."

"And Grunder will gladly supply weapons for the conflict." Karla narrows her eyes. "They're already developing a manned version of the Arsenal Bird to get around the new IUN laws. Guess who would be the first customer?"

"Okay, okay." You groan, your head starting to hurt now. "So we fucked up OB's plan. What's OUR plan, then?"

"Well, they're definitely going to try and step up efforts to eliminate or disgrace you." Karla says grimly. "They cannot or will not believe there's a way to unify Belka that doesn't involve force. They know Raven Squadron is being propped up to advance the referendum agenda, so you're the most obvious target."

"Greeeeaaaat." You scowl. "I'm a pilot, not a superspy, you know."

"I assume steps are being taken?" Bandit crosses his arms.

"We got an informant spilling the beans on Grunder's inner workings. It's only a matter of time before the government launches an official investigation." Karla explains. "We're also aware there's a leak in the IUN informing OB of your movements. Uncle is trying to narrow it down."

"And what are you gonna be doing in all this?" You ask Karla.

"Well, I'll be your PR agent, of course!" Karla grins as she pats your shoulder. "It's going to be a media FIRESTORM when you get back to Belka!"

"What? You mean to say you don't want me around?" Karla replies with mock sadness. "I thought we were tight, Milly! How could this be?"

"I'm a big girl, I can take care of myself." You roll your eyes, playing along. "Trust me, I won't say anything that'll rock the boat, okay?"

"See, you SAY that..." Karla laughs.

"I can keep an eye on her." Bandit assures Karla. "You can trust me on that."

"And THAT'S why you're in charge of the squadron!" Karla winks. "You just gotta behave yourself, okay, Milly?"

"Yeah, yeah." You grumble.

"Oh yeah, and I like the new flightsuit you're rocking! Really showing off those curves!" Karla winks and gives a thumbs up.

You see Karla's eyebrow visibly twitch, but she manages to maintain her cool.

"Oh dear, Milly, did you hit your head on that last mission? You seem to have a pretty faulty memory there." She says with a forced, plastic smile.

"Oho, maybe it's your memory that's faulty." You respond with a fake, plastic smile of your own. "You ARE a lot older than me, after all."

"Ladies. Please." Bandit heads the both of you off before things can escalate even further. "Karla, I agree with Red's suggestion. Your skills and connections are probably better served rooting out the leak."

"I suppose that make sense." Karla sighs loudly. "Still, I would've thought you'd jump at the chance to hang out with me!"

"Hang out in your shadow, you mean." You harumph.

"Ladies." Bandit coughs.

"Okay, okay, I'll get on that!" Karla chuckles.

"We're just messing with each other!" You giggle.

"I'd rather not take the chance." Bandit shakes his head.

"Anyways, we're getting into boring paperwork stuff here." Karla makes a hand motion to shoo you away. "Go have some fun or something. Anywhere else except with us old bores."

"Yeah yeah, sure thing." You shrug. "Guess it's time to have some FUN."

"But not too much fun!" Karla chides as you turn to leave.

You saunter over to where Angela and Alanna were hanging out, a bit curious as to what they were doing out here.

"Heeeeey, how are my favorite southeast Belkans?" You say cheerfully. "Not joining in on the celebrations?"

"Way too crowded." Alanna grunts, taking a swig from her beer bottle. "And way too many Belkans."

"Aw, don't be like that!" You pout. "We're all fellow countrywomen here, aren't we?"

"She's just in a bad mood." Angela shakes her head. "Lot of Ustians have loooooong memories when it comes to the Belkan War. Not a lot of them good."

"I get it, I get it." You sigh. "So is that why you two are out here? Just avoiding the party?"

"Yeah, well, it was getting a bit crowded in there." Angela shrugs. "And we could use some fresh air anyways, so why not just hang out outside? Ain't that right, Alanna?"

"Uh huh." Alanna nods glumly.

"Awwww, don't be that way." You coo. "You sure you don't want me to get any souvenirs for you?"

"Not interested." Alanna grunts.

As you enter the bar, you can see that the party was already well under way, with dozens of pilots flooding the flooding the room drinking and singing.

And, surprisingly enough, you could see both Vicky and Misono up on the small stage normally reserved for bands and singers, belting out horrible and slurred lyrics to some corny ass pop song. However, everybody was too drunk and buzzed to care about the quality of the song, and a lot of them were singing along as well.

Both Vicky and Misono were teetering back and forth as they screamed in their microphones, looking as if they were on the verge of toppling off the stage at any moment.

That was.... a pretty special sight.

Ah, fuck it. You might as well join in if both Vicky and Misono were already making fools of themselves. You take a nice shot of liquid courage in the form of some Belkan brandy and jump up on the stage, grabbing a microphone and singing along with your wingmates to the drunken cheers and whoops of the gathered pilots.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqURBTpvh0A

You actually didn't even know what the hell you were singing anyways but you played along by ear, and honestly nobody here was in a condition to really notice, anyways.

And the singing and drinking continue on well into the night. At least for one night, you didn't have to worry about crap like politics, war, or old terrorist buddies that wanted you dead. Right now it was all about the moment where the Belkan Air Force could celebrate one of its first victories in a very, VERY long time...

And here you were, back at Dinsmark for what was arguably a more upbeat visit than last time. Word of the successful Embassy rescue had spread throughout all of Belka, Seemed like the entire damn country had lit up with buzz and gossip! Then again, you couldn't blame them. Belkans didn't really have anything positive to talk about in a looooooong time.

However, you and Bandit had been swiftly spirited away by government types the moment you had landed, ostensibly to keep you both out of the public eye until the time was right.

And that time was a big parade straight through the middle of Dinsmark, which included all of the Embassy staff that had been rescued, as well as the brave soldiers of Siegfried who extracted them.

You and Bandit, on the other, were a different matter. While it would be great to be in among the parade, there were some planners who suggested you and Bandit perform a flyby in your planes. You were both pilots, after all, and the public would recognize the planes more than the both of you in person...

Eventually, you all agreed to do a flyby over the parade as it proceeded its way through Dinsmark. That would certainly give the crowd something to look at!

However, one caveat was that your planes would have to fly clean. Not just for safety purposes, but not to give the crowd or foreign observers the wrong idea. Bandit naturally was not comfortable with this decision at all. Probably because he was still wary of OB managing to find a way to strike at you, even in the middle of Belka itself.

However, the higher ups were adamant that there were sufficient friendly assets in the area that could provide protection. Still, it felt wrong having to solely rely on others to keep you safe.

Ultimately, you and Bandit both agreed to fly clean, for the benefit of the crowd.

And that's how you ended up here, flying your Su-47 lazily over the skyline of DInsmark. Down below, you could see the throngs of people crowding the main parade route, which would eventually lead its way to the steps of the capital building.

Occasionally, you'd switch your radio over to the civilian frequencies, where you could hear news reports of all the celebrations down below, while commenting on you and Bandit flying overhead, as if still protecting the procession.

You could also see the University from here, the sprawling campus making an obvious landmark. You wonder what the Professor thought of this, or if he was in the celebrations or observing quietly from his office.

However, so far, at least in the air, there wasn't really anything going on. All you were supposed to do was fly circles around the city, occasionally passing over the parade to give the crowds something to look at up above.

As you engage your cobra maneuver, you switch over to civilian comms to see if anybody notices. You hold your plane in the vertical as long as you can, right above the parade.

"Hey! Look at that!"

"It's Red Tail!"

"Is that part of the show?"

"Quick! Get your camera up! We need a shot of this!"

"It looks like its floating!"

"Red, what are you up to?" Bandit sighs, more exasperated than angry.

"Just spicing things up!" You laugh. You look down and could tell you've definitely got the crowd's attention now.

"It was nothing. Everything's fine." You say. "Just testing out some of the controls."

"All right. We'll be monitoring things from here." The ATC says. "Just be careful. This is crowded airspace."

The rest of the parade goes off without a hitch. You and Bandit then head off back to the airbase to land.

Not too eventful, but that wasn't such a bad thing in this situation. You'd had to see the crap that happened over Farbanti going on over here in Dinsmark.

Once you land, both you and Bandit get changed out of your flightsuit, though you notice Bandit putting on casual civilian clothes.

"Huh? You're not gonna go meet the media?" You raise an eyebrow.

"We're not required to appear before them. And I'm not too comfortable going into the spotlight anyways." Bandit explains simply. "I'll be getting some private business done while we're here."

You know what, it was actually a good time to meet up with the Professor again, see what he thought about this whole new turn of events. You quickly arrange for a cab to take you to the university, where he was sure to be.

Thankfully, it seemed that your cabbie seemed to know his stuff, sticking to the roads well away from the main parade route. They were practically abandoned, as most of the population had been drawn away to the celebrations.

However, as you neared the front gates of the university, you could already see quite a crowd in front. More reporters. Where they here looking for the Professor, too?

You move up closer to the knot of reporters. Fortunately, they don't seem to recognize you. Good thing you were in your civvies, too, or else you would've stood out pretty badly.

"Hey, that's going on here?" You ask innocently.

"We're trying to get an interview with the Red Swallow himself." One of the reporters replies.

"Huh? Why now?" You ask, genuinely surprised.

"Well, rumors are going around that the Red Tail was a student of his!" The reporter says with glee. "Since we haven't been able to find her, we were hoping we could get a scoop from him!"

You.... weren't exactly sure how to feel about this.

Gah, freaking vultures. They were just trying to get to you through him. You were pretty sure none of these guys knew or appreciated the Professor's war record.

However, you manage to retain enough self control to not just punch the reporters in the face. However, you do notice that some of the reporters milling around were.... a bit too stiff. As if they were just pretending to be standing around waiting. It's then that you eyes catch the unmistakable sight of concealed handguns hidden under their coats.

Undercover cops or something? Agents from Intelligence? Or worse, OB operatives? Regardless, it doesn't seem like they recognize you so maybe they aren't after you?

You decide you better off trying to ignore these guys, at least for now. You decide not to press the issue and quietly slip past the crowd reporters and through the front gate, the guards stationed there letting you through with no issue.

You then make a straight beeline for the Professor's office. Just as you had expected, the Professor was there working, apparently not affected by today's events at all.

"Um, Prof?" You lightly knock on the open office door to get his attention. "I'm back!"

"Hm? Milly?" The Professor pauses and looks up from his work. "What brings you here?"

"What, I can't visit my favorite teacher once in a while?" You grin and wink, stepping inside the office.

"I thought you would be out enjoying the... festivities." The Professor remarks. "So what exactly are you doing here?"

"What, I can't come check in on my favorite teacher once in a while?" You chuckle. "Anyways, I happened to cross a bunch of reporters at the front gate."

"Ah yes." The Professor nods as she stares out the window. "I see reporters aren't all that different from back then, either. Vultures, all of them."

"Don't like them, much?" You blink.

"They would be just as quick to demonize you as worship you." The Professor explains, not even hiding the bitterness in his voice.

You assume it had something to do with the Belkan War.

"Sounds like there's a story behind that." You remark.

"Oh, it's not much of a story." The Professor sighs and shakes his head. "I was once a media darling, shortly before the Belkan War started. Constant glowing praise 24/7, claiming I was Belka's greatest pilot."

The Professor then gazes out his office window, his eyes eyes glazing over with reminiscence.

"When I was shot down, though, they immediately abandoned me like a discarded toy. I was nothing more than a failure in their eyes, not worth giving the time of day to. But it was when the War was finally lost that they grew ugly."

"How so?" You blink.

"People were angry." The Professor gives you a hard look. "And they were looking for something, anything to blame. Naturally, the ruling party was lambasted and forced to dissolve, but many of those who had also fought the war were caught in the outrage. Scathing critiques, hit pieces, and false accusations were rampant in those days."

The Professor is quiet as he stares out the window for a few more seconds, before quickly changing the subject.

"Anyways, you have done an excellent job rescuing the Embassy staff." The Professor continues. "Though I do find the entire situation odd. If Erusea was claiming they weren't involved in the attempted attacks, who was it?"

"I think I have an idea." You frown.

"One Belka? The thought has crossed my mind." The Professor says grimly. "Have they tried contacting you again since last we talked?"

You shake your head.

"Well, I doubt you would be a suitable candidate for recruitment at this point." The Professor sighs. "But this continued involvement in hampering their plans is sure to provoke them to do something about you, like what happened with Karla. I'm sure you remember."

Yeah... there was that one time One Belka kidnapped you to use as leverage against Karla. Goddamn assholes, the lot of them.

"Yeah, I'll keep an eye out for them." You nod. "Still remember how they don't quite have a positive view of me."

"I just wanted to make sure you knew." The Professor gives a rare smile. "Well, I think that's enough about politics and current events. How about some tea while we're both here?"

"That sounds great." You grin.

And so the rest of the day seems to pass by so fast as you and the Professor catch up, especially when you told him more about Vicky and Misono and their little quirks.

"I'd very much like to meet them someday. They sound like true comrades." The Professor nods. "Pity that couldn't come with you."

"Yeah, well, they got their own lives to take care of." You shrug. "But yeah, I'll try to drag 'em along sometime."

"Please do." The Professor then glances at the clock and pauses. "Oh dear, look at how the time has passed. It looks like that will have to be it for the day."

"Aw, really?" You sigh.

"Now now, I'm sure you have plenty to to do." The Professor tuts. "Besides, you can always come back to visit later, right?"

"I guess." You concede and give him a wave before taking your leave.

By this point, it was already pretty late in the day and when you head back to the front gate, it looks like the gathered reporters had already dispersed, having finally lost their patience. Those weirdos pretending to be reporters were also gone, too. Wonder what that was all about.

As you head back to base, you're left wondering what exactly the rest of the squadron was up to...

With the day almost other, you wonder where exactly you should crash. Bandit had advised you to stay on the base, but that was honestly kinda boring. Plus, if you decided to go back to your apartment, maybe you'd be able to lure one of those Grunder or OB guys out in the open. Shit, Bandit would probably pop a vein if he found out about that!

Or, well, guess you could just go crash at someone else's place, or even just rent out a hotel room or something.

Well, you could like, crash with someone, probably. However, now that you think about it, most of the people you knew weren't actually in Dinsmark at the moment.

Well, uh, going back to the Professor didn't seem quite right, and could probably start a whole lot rumors among the wrong kind of people. From what you understand, both Karla and Uncle were out of the country, too.

That left... finding out where Bandit was? Or maybe you could go babysit Elisa or something. Karla wouldn't have taken her along on an investigation or anything.

Just to make sure, you pull out your phone and give Karla's house a call. It only takes a couple of rings before a familiar, bratty voice answers it.

"Hi Milly! Finally calling to admit Mom's the bestest pilot?" She says cheekily.

"As if!" You scoff. "So I take you're home right now?"

"Yup! Mommy and Daddy are out right now, but Auntie Tarin is keeping an eye on me!"

You shudder. Tarin used to be one of Jaeger's squaddies, and she honestly scared the shit out of you whenever she was around. It wasn't that she was physically imposing or aggressive. It was just... she always had this habit of catching you off guard or showing up in places you don't expect, like she could just walk through walls without making a sound or something.

"Well uh, anyways, I'm in town for the day, so you think I can stay over for the night?"

"LIKE A SLEEPOVER?" Elisa says happily so loudly you wince from your phone. "Of course!"

"Tarin won't mind?" You blink.

"Nah, she's only a danger to strangers, you know that!" Elisa laughs. "Looking forward to it!"

Well, you could just head directly over to Elisa's place right now if you wanted. Or, well, the base was actually a minor detour on the way there. Maybe you could show her Swallow too...

You decide to call another cab and head straight over to Karla's house.

Unsurprisingly, since Karla was living the family life now, she had moved out to the suburbs well outside of Dinsmark, in a pretty high class community. With that money she got being Valkyrie, she could probably build her own personal mansion if she wanted to.

You finally arrive at the house, which is a large, two story structure. It could definitely house way more than just Karla, Jaeger, and Elisa, which led you to wonder if they were planning to make future additions. However, you shake the thought out of your head and move to knock on the front door-

Scratch that. The door opens before your knuckle can even touch the wood, and you're met by Tarin's dull gaze.

"Elisa's expecting you." She says simply before stepping aside to let you in.

"Um, thanks?" You say, still uncertain how to act around her.

"Upstairs." Tarin says as she points upwards.

"Right." You nod.

Sure enough, you could hear faint voices and thuds upstairs. Sounded like Elisa was certainly up to something up there.

You go in straight for the kill, you fingers grappling Elisa's sides and you begin the tickle attack!

"Aahaha-st-st-sto-AHAHAHAHAH!" Elisa laughs and wails, her ticklish nature betraying her own body as she keeps laughing and and seizing up.

"You brought this on yourself, ya squirt!" You cackle as you continue the attack.

Elisa starts literally rolling on the ground while laughing, trying to shake your fingers off, but you match her movements.

"I'm-AHAHAHAHAHA-gonna-AHAHAHAHAHAH-get you ba-AHAHAHAHAAAA!" Elisa continues to laugh uncontrollably.

However, you feel a chill on the back of your neck and turn around, seeing Tarin peeking her head in from the door. She just gives a silent nod before quietly sliding back into the darkness.

Man, she was really freaky.

Elisa finally manages to regain her composure, panting heavily to catch her breath.

"O-okay! I'll let you win that one!" She huffs. "But next time is gonna be different!"

"Suuuuuuuure." You grin as you plop down on the floor. "So how have ya been doing?"

"Oh you know, the usual. Going to school, hanging out with friends." Elisa sits down next to you and leans onto your side. "Mom and Dad went out again."

"They uh, used to be my friends." You cautiously admit.

"No way!" Elisa gasps. "You actually had friends?"

"You want me to tell you the story or not, you twerp!" You grunt.

"Okay! Okay!" Elisa pouts. "So what do you mean they USED to be your friends? Why were you even friends with them to begin with?"

"Well, we all used to believe in the same thing." You sigh as you wrap your arms around Elisa and hug her close. "We were part of Belka's Lost Generation, you know? Born right before or after the Belkan War. All of us knew what we wanted, but not how to get it.:"

"What did you want?" Elisa asks curiously.

"Belka used to be bigger, you know. A lot bigger." You explain. "But a lot of pieces broke off, and some were taken."

"Oh, you mean like where Grandma and Grandpa live?" Elias lights up. "North Osea?"

"South Belka." You grunt. "Seriously, what the heck does your Mom teach you?"

"It's what the map says!" Elisa sticks her tongue out at you.

"All right, all right!" You groan. "Anyways, me and my One Belka buddies, we had... ideas of how to get Belka back together. But it involved hurting people. A lot of people."

"So what made you leave?" Elisa asks.

>Have I ever told you how scary your Mom is?
>They got a bit too crazy about the "hurting people" thing.
>There was that time they tried to kill me.

I think this kind of combines with how much Millie really does look up to Karla. It's scary and cool and someone worth following.

What One Belka wanted was fundamentally correct. But wars should be fought honorably. Milly rlly has no problem with force. Shed gladly fight Osea. Glassing thousands of civilians is obviously a different story.

"Have I ever told you how scary your Mom is?" You ask Elisa.

"Mom? Scary?" Elisa blinks. "Since when?"

"Your Mom spoils you way too much." You sigh. "You should've seen her when she was in her prime. She was a freaking beast, both in person and in the air!"

Ah, that really brought back the memories. Seeing Karla as the Valkyrie demolishing everything in her path in the skies. The strength and force of will she demonstrated in person, which won both your respect and your loyalty.

"She beat you up, didn't she?" Elisa concludes.

"No! Of course not!" You deny. "Well, not PHYSICALLY, at least."

"Mhm. Suuuuuuure." Elisa teases.

"You want another tickle?" You narrow your eyes.

"N-no!" Elisa shakes her head.

"Anyways, yeah. My relationship with One Belka is... really complicated, to say the least. And once again, your Mom is going out of her way to help me out."

"So you don't mind?" Elisa asks.

>I could use any help I can get.
>I can handle it myself.

>I can handle it myself.

Our problem. Really only choices we can make. Karla means well but this was never personal for her. As our frequent arguments show.

"Yeah, I feel bad for getting her pulled back into this." You admit. "But, well, that's your Mom for you, always jumping in to bail me out."

"You are a really terrible Big Sis, you know that?" Elisa responds jokingly. "You should be the one taking care of everything!"

"I'll take that over being an Aunt." You shudder. "And there's nothing I'd like more than to finally get all this One Belka stuff behind me once and for all."

"Well, I hope you do good on that!" Elisa yawns. "I'm... feeling kinda tired..."

"Sheesh, no wonder, look at the time!" You blink, glancing at the clock. "It's super late!"

Not to mention, the physical exertion of the pillow fight and tickle attack probably did sap a lot of stamina from Elisa, too. Thankfully, she was already in her pajamas so you didn't need to dress her. You simply pick her up and set her gently on her bed, decorated with little fighter planes. Cute.

"There's a spare room you can sleep in." Tarin says quietly from behind. Damnit, how long was she there?!

>Yeah, some sleep sounds nice.

"Yeah, some sleep sounds nice." You yawn, feeling suddenly tired yourself.

Tarin silently nods and leads you though the house to a room just down the hall. Nice and cozy with a full bed, thought a bit sparse. However, given the places you've had to sleep in the past, you weren't complaining. The moment Tarin closes the door, you immediately flop down on the bed and drift off to sleep.

One Belka, Grunder, Karla, Bandit.... all that could wait until the morning...
