/qst/ - Quests

You crawl up into a sitting position, your back against the wall. On the other side of the dark, featureless corridor, about 15 feet from where you sit, an old double-barreled shotgun is raised at you.

"No hard feelings." the gun owner plainly states, her voice muffled by the scarf that covers most of her face. Cruel words, and probably the last you'll hear.

You've never been particularly religious, but if there ever was a time to appeal to a higher power, you feel this would be it. Biting your lower lip in hopelessness and tightly clasping your hands together, you let out a silent plea to anyone willing to listen. You hear only a snort of derision from the girl in reply.

Then, a miracle happens.

A figure suddenly bolts out from behind the one of the corridor's corners. It's-!

>Aono, the class representative and your childhood friend. You always knew deep down he'd be the kind of person to put his life on the line to rescue someone.

The girl holding you at gunpoint suddenly lets out a shrill cry; initially it is merely of surprise, but it soon turns into a howl of pain. A shot goes off, before you hear the gun being dropped. You see the flash of a blade of some kind, followed by the cracking sound of metal grinding against bone. This sound is repeated several times, as do the girl’s screams until they are no more than a bubbling gurgle.

You can only stare as the scene unfolds before you. When your mysterious saviour is finally content with his carnage, he stands up to his full height, turning slowly towards you. Even in the dim light you can tell his silhouette is far from human. Fur, lifeless eyes and a comically large, animal head; a mascot suit of some kind. In the silence of the corridor, all you can hear are its wearer’s deep, muffled breaths coming from within the depths of the suit.

After what feels like an eternity of staring into its beady, plastic eyes, the ‘thing’ finally turns around towards the direction it came from. Seemingly uninterested in either you or the gun than now sits on the corridor’s floor, it lazily turns the corner, disappearing from sight.

Suddenly snapping out of it, you immediately lunge for the shotgun and clutch it as tightly to yourself as a baby would a milk bottle. While your eerie rescuer might be out of sight, you can still hear him plodding along not too far. You:

You stare at the crumpled body in the corner. You’d much rather up and bolt right, as far away from that freakish furry as your legs can carry you. Despite this, however, you steel your nerves and cautiously approach your would-be assailant.

Her body is a gruesome sight: the occasional white of snapped bone can be seen across her now contorted limbs, while a glancing blow to the cheekbone has ruined what would have otherwise been a relatively attractive face (a thought that strikes you as oddly out of place). Despite the savage injuries, though, the killing blow was rather precise: a chop to her clavicle, leaving a gaping wound from her shoulder to the top of her breast. You take care to neither look at the wounds too intently nor to step in the pool of blood that is starting to form, as you begin to rifle through her pockets.

Your fingers feel the cold metal of two shotgun shells stored in her sweatshirt pockets. You’ve just managed to grab them when a wheeze causes you to jump. You turn, startled, to find yourself staring into the girl’s wide open, remaining good eye. A range of emotions flashes through her broken face, as the wheezing grows more panicked. She’s still alive!

“It’s okay! I’m not going to hurt you.” you quickly explain, almost as if apologizing for the looting. The girl feebly attempts to move an arm, which only twitches slightly in response against your foot. Finally, as if in acceptance, the girl’s wheezing grows more regular, although her gaze remains fixed you. You sit there for several minutes, both of you unable to look away from each other. Finally, as her breathing grows shallow once again, she lets out what sounds almost like a long sigh, her eyelid fluttering shut. A few minutes later, her breathing has stopped entirely.

As you return to checking the rest of her (all empty) pockets, you are suddenly aware of a faint beeping sound. You trace its origin to some kind of device, tightly secured around her ankle. Instinctively, you reach down for your own; it seems you are wearing one as well. On the small screen of the girl’s ankle device, what seems to be numbers counting down with every beep.

04 : 32 : 50
04 : 32 : 49
04 : 32 : 48

The timer appears to be separate from the rest of the device, as it is securely latched onto the ankle bracelet.

>A trap? Best get out of here. You’ve wasted enough time on this chick already.

Leaning down, you carefully pry off the timer from the ankle bracelet. For a second, you fear the thing will blow up in your hand the instant it is removed. Thankfully, the device continues to steadily count down the seconds, letting out the occasional soft beep. As you stare at the gadget’s interface, however, a large red number flashes brightly beneath the timer.

0

As you wonder as to its significance, you suddenly hear two voices coming from the far end of the corridor, in the direction opposite from where the fursuiter left.

Gripping the shotgun, you quickly turn on your heels and escape further down the corridor, away from the approaching voices. Turning past a corner, you find yourself in a dimly lit, feverishly follow the blood trail left behind by your impromptu rescuer.

The twisting network of hallways seems to grow narrower and narrower, with each turn revealing a new set of corridors and rooms branching off from your path. You continue following the blood droplets that dot along the cement floor; at the very least you can guess what awaits at the end of this particular path, which is more than can be said about any of the side corridors.

Finally, you hear it; the sounds of feet slowly dragging against the pavement. The same sound it had made when it had left you in the company of the dying girl. A quick glance around the corner, down one of the side corridors, is enough to confirm its cartoonish silhouette. You gulp, carefully loading a second shot in your gun.

The more you look at it from the cover of darkness, the stranger the ‘thing’ looks. While it wasn’t walking particularly fast when you last saw him, they certainly weren’t this erratic. The fursuiter seems to be turning in circles, bumping against the corridor’s walls as it does so. It awkwardly swings the machete it holds with both hands to and fro, bending his arms as far back as his shoulders as if trying to scratch his back with it. You can barely hear a muffled grunting noise coming from within the suit.

It doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere anytime soon.

A faint beep reminds you that you are still carrying the girl’s timer. And it appears to be counting down the last seconds! Resolving to get two birds with one stone, you lob the device down a side corridor, away from your hiding place. Clacking loudly against the floor, the timer finally reaches zero. There is a single, shrill beep, before the screen shuts off without much further fanfare. Not quite the explosion you were expecting, perhaps for the best.

Hearing this, the person in the mascot suit immediately changes its posture, machete suddenly poised and twitching in front of it. After a minute of hesitation, it takes a few cautious steps forward towards the source of the sound. As it walks past your hiding place, you notice it is not so much wielding the machete as its hands are tightly stuck to it, tightly bound around the hilt with duct tape. Its wrists are further cuffed together with a sturdy length of metal wire.

>Shoot it while it’s back is turned.

“Hey.” You step out of hiding, gun lowered, catching the thing’s attention. “Those bindings, I can help you take those off.”

The fursuiter’s first reaction is to immediately spin around, machete slicing through the air as he does so. For a good minute it just stares at you with its dead, plastic eyes, trying to process your offer. Then, it slowly lowers its weapon and turns around. Squirming awkwardly, it tries to point at a zipper on its back, letting out a few muffled grunts as it does so.

You slowly open it, revealing…

Keiko Imoto. You'd always thought her as a hopelessly dull person, always in the tow of some larger group of girls. Some might have called her 'gregarious', but in your eyes it was rather a case of lacking any sort of individuality. You never really bothered interacting with her beyond basic school formalities, a favour which she returned. To say you were any more than acquaintances would be lying. You might as well have been siblings however, with how quickly she embraces you as soon as she is helped out of the mascot suit. "______-san!" she cries, pulling off the strip of duct tape that covers her mouth. "Where are we? Why are none of the others here? That person, did you see them? Why... I-I was afraid nobody would..." She squeezes you tighter. The barrage of questions doesn't end, to the point the girl seems to be running out of breath.

Waiting for her to calm down, you help her up to her feet. You start leading her further down the corridor: you're not sure why, but you get the feeling it is best not to linger here too long. The questions can wait for now. Keiko seems to sense your worry, as she only musters the courage to speaks up again after several minutes of dead silence.

"_______-san... Do you think there are other people we know from our class in this place? I mean, we're still wearing our uniforms and all..."
You look down at yourself, realizing this detail for the first time. Indeed you are; perhaps Keiko might be sharper than you gave her credit for. You're not sure why, but everything prior to being attacked seems to be hazy. Your memories about yesterday in particular seem to be entirely gone; the last thing you remember clearly is leaving the house to go to school.

>Give an optimistic reply. It seems odd that two people as unrelated to each other as you and Keiko would find themselves in this labyrinth otherwise.
>Give a pessimistic reply. You didn't recognize the girl with the shotgun before, so perhaps it was just a fluke that you happened to meet someone you previously knew.

The sudden change of argument does not go unnoticed, as Keiko pauses a second before replying. "I-I'm not really sure. I remember going to class, then nothing. When I came to, I was already lying on the floor in that suit. I tried crying out for help, but I'd already been gagged and my hands tied to that knife. But I am certain I saw someone else run off, just minutes before you showed up."

Her words send a chill down your back, and you quickly look over your shoulder back into the dark, but undoubtedly empty, corridor. You admit to Keiko you hadn't come across anyone else in the small side corridors, or even heard anything in particular. She gives you a worried look, but says nothing.

Speeding up your pace, you quickly reach a simple wooden door at the end of the corridor. Upon opening it, a completely different environment from what you've seen so far opens up before you. You cautiously step into a very large, circular room, brightly lit by a skylight far above. While the walls are smooth and featureless white, the room itself is furnished with four couches forming a square in the middle of the room, a rug and even a small washbasin.

Six corridors seem to branch off from the room, in addition to the door you have just stepped through. Opposite of where you currently stand, a sliding bulkhead door sits prominently beside a bright LED screen displaying a single number: 1

Two people seem to be sitting on one of the couches, their backs to you. They are chatting away, and do not appear to have noticed you yet.

"My guess is we try to let the timer count down to 1 minute, then try to approach the door again." says the one to the left, a lanky, stubbled man in his 30s. His squat partner on the right nods, albeit not entirely convinced by the proposal.

>Slowly half-shut the door you just walked through, spying on the two from behind it.

Urging Keiko to stay behind you, hiding your gun and the machete she still awkwardly carries behind your back, you call out to the two. The squat man is immediately caught by surprise, scrambling up to his feet at the sound of your voices, but his partner soon urges him to sit down again.

"Hello there!" calls out the tall man, turning around on the couch to face you. "We were wondering when someone else might show up. Come on, have a seat!"

"Umm, excuse me... Do you know exactly where we are?" Keiko asks from behind your back. She makes to move forward, but you hold her back. Partly out of caution, partly to keep your weapons hidden until you can ascertain these people's intentions. The tall man says nothing, instead getting a good, long look at your classmate instead. "Some sort of labyrinth." His partner eventually speaks up, gruffly. "Don't bother with any of these other corridors, they just seem to loop back here."
"It's either through that bulkhead or back here. And since we've yet to figure out how to get through the latter, you might as well make yourselves comfortable." chimes in the tall man, gesturing towards the other couches.

The squat man grows increasingly nervous as you reveal the shotgun you are carrying. His companion once again raises a hand, as if to tell him to stay put. You cautiously make your way to the couch opposite to theirs, before letting yourselves fall back amongst the surprisingly comfy pillows. From here you are able to get a proper view of the two men: the short one appears to be wearing a simple jacket over a button-up shirt, in clear contrast with his companion's gaudy, purple suit. Neither of the two appear to be openly carrying weapons, although the squat man is holding his own timer in one of his hands. The number 0 flashes occasionally below the countdown on its screen.

"As I was saying," reprises the tall man. "We've been trying to figure out how to get through that bulkhead there, but it seems some condition needs to be met for it to open. If you approach it otherwise..." He nods to his friend, who proceeds to demonstrate. Walking past your sofa, he approaches the door with his own counting down timer. As soon as he gets within a few paces from the door, a loud buzzer rings out, the screen beside the door flashing red. The squat man hurriedly secures the timer back onto his ankle device before the countdown hits zero.

"... Well, that." Sighs the tall man. "So far we've tried changing the number of people in the room, how many times we approached the door, trying to open the door in different ways with or without our timers, moving the furniture and, now, the numbers on the timer. The room's empty outside of what you can already see, the door has no handles or other ways to open it and the only clue we have to go by is that "1" beside the door." He leans forward, steepling his fingers in front of his face. "Now, I have a few more ideas left, but I'd like to save them for last if possible. Before we try them out, I don't suppose you two have any suggestions?"

An odd question...

>Suggest there might be a card or some device you should find in one of the corridors.

You make to get up: "Hold on, I think I found something earlier back in those corridors that could help us get through." You glance at Keiko meaningfully. While visibly confused, she stands up from the couch as well.

"Is that so?" says the tall man, following suit. "Then let us accompany you. It will be safer if we all stick together." For a second you consider refusing, alarmed by the man's eagerness. You grip the shotgun tighter; you still haven't seen any weapons on them, and barring any unexpected interference, you're confident you can react in time to any foul play. You give the man a curt nod, before moving towards the door you came in through.

Light from the circular room floods into the dark corridor as you step in. The mascot suit is still right where you left it, sitting on the floor like a shed skin. And behind it, just beyond the light's reach, the tall silhouette of a person. Startled, you quickly lift the gun's muzzle, as your fingers fumble to find the trigger. Uncaring of the threat, or perhaps simply unaware, the figure takes a few steps forward into the light. The wet sound of bare feet slapping against cement accompanies it as it approaches.

Right as you are about to squeeze the trigger, you catch a proper glimpse of the person. What you had initially mistaken for the shape of a man appears to instead be a tall, wiry-looking woman. Practically naked, barring a pair of underwear and a cotton undershirt, you do not fail to notice a pair of large, pointed scissors tucked beneath and held in place by the elastic band in her panties. There is a clatter at your feet, a quick glance revealing it to be the timer you intended to retrieve; the girl must have tossed it towards you.

Though she stares at your group with sunken eyes, she does not say a word, continuing instead to move towards you.

>Shout at her to stay where she is. Shoot if she comes any closer after that.
>Keep the gun on her, but ask who she is and what she's doing here.
>Lower the gun to show you are not a threat.

Us interrogating her could give the two other guys an opening if they're looking for it.

You ask Keiko to pick up the timer, keeping your gun firmly aimed at the strange girl.
"Who are you? What are you doing here?" you ask firmly. The girl doesn't reply, but stops in her tracks for a moment. She cranes her neck forward, eyes squinting against the light flooding in from behind you, as if she was trying to get a better look at you. She takes another fooldhardy step forward.

You open your mouth to say something, but your one-sided interrogation is suddenly interrupted by a squeak of surpise from Keiko, followed by the sound of metal clattering against the floor. Before you can even spin around, an arm reaches from behind and pries one of hands from your weapon.

"Sorry kid, but you two should leave these dangerous things with us adults" grunts the tall man from behind, as he strains to get your fingers off the gun.

You're not sure if the girl is an accomplice or anything, but the two must have seen an opening to disarm you and gone for it.

We don't know how dangerous this girl is. Best to leave our gun loaded and ready if she ends up being bad news as well.
