BLACK CLOVER: PARALLEL STORY

This is a CYOA QUEST set in the world of Black Clover manga and anime.

The Quest is updated daily at about 20:00 GMT – 15:00 EST – 24:00 PST (Time can wary due to Christmas Week)

You are Cynthia Gualdo, a daughter of a Head Tailor and thus, a tailor from birth yourself. Your home as well as workshop is located in the most prestigious, popular and exclusive trade region in Kikka – the High Street – and it was a dream achieved by your now deceased mother and middle-aged father. Your father hopes that, someday, you will succeed him… and you have long agreed to this thread of fate. Yet still, some nights you wish you could just forget and leave all those things behind and escape Kikka, escape the Common Region, and explore the world.

Tresses Amuure, the prodigy of the Blue Rose, continues to grow more and more envious of your merits; she is not ashamed to hide her antipathy by the show of intimidation and childish insults. You endure this by ignoring her. Instead, you continue with your best efforts of trying to complete the two, rather onerous, gowns – one as a gift for Elvira and one as a task by the Vice-Captain of the Blue Rose. After assisting Elvira with, rather illegitimate, duplication of the yul coin, you ended up in a sparing match with Tugela – the Goat Knight – a short lived one at that: you can still feel the bruises from that brief meeting of yours. Today’s evening, you joined Olyver and all of the boys with their seasonal attempt to catch the so-called ‘Oracle Beast’ – a creature infused with the magic to display the future for the one who will stare inside its eyes. The problem? It can be any creature in this forest…

You spend 11 mana.
Mana [65/100]
Health [4/5]

Slowly, you pace yourself towards Pero and his – now – crystallized body. The boy’s face is frozen in distress, the savage grizzly stands seconds away from engaging and ripping him into tiny pieces… Fatefully, someone or something saved him by trapping him in this crystal prison… You keep an ear for any distrustful sound coming from the darkness surrounding the field. Olyver follows your steps, and he too keep track of the dense forestry.

You make a stride around the gemstone effigies as you closely inspect the magical entrapment – surely, it’s magic. You take a deep, nervous breath before you hang your palm a few inches away from Pero’s ‘preserved’ form. You try your damn hardest but you find yourself unable to sense any magic coming from it – either Pero’s or another’s. Reluctantly, you summon your mana and push your hand onto the crystal to send mana coursing over its surface.

Your magic oozes off the crystal and – soon – your silver mist evaporates into the air with no visible resistance or effect; you hem and harrumph until you freeze as you overhear(?) a very silent growl. You grab into your grimoire and push your body against the cold, white-crystal body of the bear. You catch your breath under Olyver’s confused expression – did he not hear it; are you going insane? You glance left and right and then in front of the statues are you see… nothing. Either the whistle of the winds or your disorientated imagination. You step away.

Olyver stands by your side and, with a kind-of ‘I’ll give it a try too’ look, he closes his eyes and puts his hands on the crystal, only to grimace in obvious discomfort and awkwardly slide them off the mineral surface. He makes a worried circle; his grimoire is floating battle-ready. “Tailor Cynthia, they are trapped in a strong magical spell…”

“Does it feel recent?” you ask him, “Why would the magician who done it just leave them like that?”

“I don’t know,” he admits as he comes even closer, “It might have been a trap… one of many still here, then.”

“Can you sense any?” you ask him – hopeful.

He awkwardly shakes his head… of course, sensing traps is not a skill a regular citizen would ever find a use of.

“Me neither,” you stare down the open meadow – the culprit of this magic might not even be here right now.
>>
However, before you can ponder any further – an incredibly massive and growing shadow covers you and Olyver in the darkness, as well as dims the crystal surfaces which have been reflecting Olyver’s lantern light until now… Warily, you both raise your heads to the choked skies. An eldritch growl is soon followed by a killing, chilling exhale. Olyver’s lantern drops and shatters as he, just like you, turn petrified in place at the presence of the… beast. The dying flame sparkles its hungering teeth. As tall as a house, with a maw big enough to eat you whole in a single bite, the ursa appears to be… the crystallized bear’s much older relative. The rainbow eyes of it glow…

The ‘Oracle Beast’.

Before you can react, or even attempt to scream, the beast raises its paw – as big as you – and exposes its claws…

Will Olyver be able to cast his spell in time? There is no way your Weighted Blanket will be able to cover the beast in time. Thankfully, Pero is in close proximity to the other bear, the ‘Oracle Beast’ won’t damage it by accident…

> Please roll 1d100 – best of three - to avoid the attack.

> Cast a Weighted Blanket and, while not big enough to surround the massive creature, cover and daze its head.
> Use grimoire to cast Homely Blanket prematurely. If you or Olyver get hit, you need all the healing you can get.
> Use your shirt as a weapon and start slashing the ‘Oracle Beast’ to catch it’s attention to give Olyver time to act.
> Keep close to the crystallized body of the bear cub(?) – the ‘Oracle Beast’ will have a harder time attacking you.
> Get away from Pero’s body as to not accidently get it damaged by the – it’s still is – angry, ravaging animal.

You manage to make several large jumps away from the ‘Oracle Beast’s’ before its massive claw impales into the hard, earthy surface and sends a massive crack shattering in all directions. The crystal statues intensely vibrate and collapse under the tremor in hazardous manner – thankfully, they are undamaged. You find yourself having to face the towering monster in a badly-lit meadow, with even the moonbeam obstructed by it shape. It is only thanks to the magical light of your and your tailor competitor glowing that you are able to still see anything here. Olyver abilities to dodge bears’ claws are as good as yours, although he finds himself in other direction than you.

“I just want to make sure,” you shout at Olyver, “This is the ‘Oracle Beast’, right?!”

Olyver slams his grimoire cover-first onto the ground and then, still forcefully bending onto it, he slides his hand off one of the parchment pages of the book with a brilliant clot of mana held in his palm. “Yes, it is!” He winces as he sways his mana in front of himself, “But try avoiding looking into her eyes! Look at the incredible size of her!”

You harrumph, “Avoid looking into her eyes?! I thought that was the point for us being here in the first place?”

“It usually is! But you will be put into a trance, while the bear will still be free to rip you into pieces!”

You hold your wand pointed at the distressed beast – is it blaming you for the cub’s(?) fate? ‘Oracle Beast’s’ tiny eyes send an eldritch, and uncanny shimmer from the darkness of where it stands before the ground crumbles once more as it finally frees its claw from the ground and, with a single step, darts towards Olyver. Before the worse can happen, you shout – “Linen Magic: Weighted Blanket”. Another enchanted textile is born from your command as soon as you finish the incantation, and is immediately send to cocoon the ‘Oracle Beast’. Just as you predicted, the blanket is not enough to cover all of the bear – or even half of it. Before it can reach Olyver, you direct the blanket to fly in front of the ursa’s head to run into it like an infuriating spiderweb – the ‘Oracle Beast’ is not fated to predict its own fate, and your weave, as if a distressed snake, surrounds its head in several coatings.

The beast’s incredibly loud road, despite being deafened by your cloth, shakes the trees and sends clouds of disturbed birds to escape their nest and thus, the tree crowns. Another earthquake shivers the ground as the beast blindingly stumbles and attempts to stop, only to loudly collapse and slide a few meters away from scared Olyver. The boy is quick to regain his composure and, practically, run out of the way or the infuriated animal.

“Cynthia! Thank you, Cynthia!” he slaps his palms together in thankfulness, “I thought I was a goner there.”
>>
“It won’t hold for long, if even for a little while!” you say with concern – Tugela made quick work of this spell.

“You are not the only non-Magic Knight here with -two- spells!” he grimaces. He opens his palm – the page of his grimoire glowing bright white, and exclaims, “Steam Magic: Deposition Cycle!” Unlike the previous time, Olyver’s steam is barely visible and chills the air itself as he directs a massive haze of it directly towards the grizzly bear. The ‘Oracle Beast’ becomes even angrier when the cloud makes contact with and soon completely consumes it.

Defensively, the towering grizzly starts smashing the ground and throwing earth around it with its sharp claws.

Olyver takes a few steps back – just to be safe; you follow his lead. The boy finally settles the motioning gesticulation of his hands once the bears body is completely drenched in the cloud. His grimoire radiated one more time and then, the bear begins calming down. No. The ‘Oracle Beast’ begins to slow down. First, hoarfrost starts to cover the tips of its fur but, quite soon – Olyver’s steam becomes so dense and cold it completely covers the beast in thick layer of ice, and then another, and another, until the cloud of steam has turned into dense frost.

This boy will have no problem becoming a Magic Knight.

He takes a deep breath as he lowers his hands, “It won’t hold for long, if ever for a little while,” he smiles.

You look at the cliff-sized ice boulder – despite Olyver’s restrains, you can hear cracks and see it tremble.

“I don’t think we are going to be able to fight it,” you reason, “First, we need to free Pero.”

“We don’t know how,” Olyver answers back as he turns the page to his first spell, “Let’s defeat it first.”

“Defeat it?!” you baffle at him in shock, “This is not something a pair of tailors should be playing with!”

“No, but a future Magic Knight should be able to,” his voice is calm, yet serious, “Tailor Cynthia, remove the blanket if you could. There is no reason to waste this opportunity, you know, I’m going to look into her eyes.”

> “There is somebody here turning everyone into crystal statues. Let’s pick up Pero and run away, Olyver!”
> “Were you faking having no interest then? The boys, and Pero here, trusted you to give them this chance.”
> “No, I’m not removing it. I won’t be able to protect you from the bear if it frees before you leave the trance.”

Mana [54/100]

“No, I’m not removing it. I won’t be able to protect you from the bear if it frees before you leave the trance.”

Olyver timidly gasps and gently scowls in a non-angry, but dejected manner, “My magic will hold it, Cynthia.”

You hesitate for a very brief moment before you clench your fist over your chest and shake your head. Olyver gasps and continues staring at you in plea, but you stand relentlessly. He sighs and steps away from the bear.

“Alright, if that’s the problem then let’s defeat it first,” his grimoire bursts into grayish aquamarine fire as it begins to spin in place and slowly release clouds of dense, as if snow, steam. You give him an uncertain glance– you see no way you can avoid this battle without having to leave Pero behind, but, you do not feel confident about this.

“Steam Magic: Vapour Wave,” Olyver states loud and clear to manifest solid rings of cold steam from the magic within his grimoire. He spreads his palm open and the mass of solid vapour bursts and smashes into the frozen house-sized bear. The cloud begins to gather and squeeze around the ice layer, slowly crushing it and the monster inside of it. It is not a pleasant view – the bear sways its enormous body in hopeless attempt to release itself.

A loud, tearing sound ricochets the meadow as the ‘Oracle Beast’ rips through your magical Weighted Blanket. The massive, sharp teeth make a mockery of your linen as they shred it off with just a few bites. Now sighted, the rainbow-glowing eyes of the bear stare Olyver, the reason for its suffering, down. The ‘Oracle Beast’ swings its massive head with a deafening roar accompaniment and shatters a part of ice around itself. Olyver panics, but manages to hold the beast in place as well as continue the assault with his weakening “Vapour Wave”. Then, another massive chunk of the ice shatters and the bear giant frees both of its massive claws from Olyver’s prison.

Before you can react, the bear rushes forwards, stumbling just a short bit before it finally frees its legs, and thus the last of Olyver’s magic holding it in place, with a thundering explosion. Hundreds of ice fragments fly into the ground the above it in a dangerous burst – several of the pieces burst through Olyver’s quickly waning magic. You are unable to see the rest of the battle – it is lost from your eyes in a mist of cold, foggy steam. The black, towering figure growls loud enough to silence the wind, before, much quietly, Olyver yells something back.
>>
The multi-coloured glistering eyes emerge from the dense white mist. The disintegrated Steam Magic of Olyver is once again present – he casted it again. You fail to spot Olyver in the dust clouds of the battle but if his magic is still lively, that means he is still alive… The tall grizzly is again wallowing in crushing pain from the pushing impact of cold vapour wave – its movements are erratic and dizzy: as if it is battling the damage and losing conscious.

Then, the bear comes crashing down just a few meters away from Pero’s statue – thank the Heavens. The ground is sent shaking once again as massive nebula of dirt raises from the fall. It struggles to stand up – the way Olyver handled it was almost humbling. It’s massive head, almost as two times your size, lays just in your reach; you step back. Wincing in pain, it opens it massive jaw to roar disgusting, cold air and then… it opens its rainbow eyes.

They say the Grand Magic Zone’s remains grants some beasts the affinity to see the future...

…If you look in their eyes, you will see it, too.

>Made a mistake, it’s supposed to be [52/100] mana.

You flinch and turn away your head from the magically forewarning eyes. The air turns even colder as you find yourself standing on front of a maw as big yourself… it’s only rational to be scared and to back away from it.

However, you immediately regret being a scaredy-cat the moment your sole touches the ground, and gust of white star-like energy erupts from the earth surface beneath you. Then, a cracking and loud sound of crystallization silences growling of the bear. You twist your body in shock as a massive, glowing rune in incomprehensible symbols spreads out beneath you and the tall grizzly. You try to stagger away but the crystal magic quickly catches up and overwhelms you. The bear, too, roars in alarm as you two turn into gem formations.

After just a few seconds, you are trapped within the same white crystal as the “Oracle Beast”. You try to break or at least stop the magic with your own, but your magic is completely effectless against the trap. You attempt to blink. You feel so cold yet, like this, your body solidified in a crystal, you can’t even shudder. It’s impossible to move. The layer of gemstones makes your vision all shattered and blurry, yet, as Olyver’s vapour vanishes, you see that he, too, was caught in the same trap as you. You’re able to think yet the intense cold makes you sleepy…

You stay like this for an hour, then another… or so you assume: it is impossible to grasp the quick stream of time. Just barely, you keep your mind half-awake for the traps’ owner to reveal himself. It is a tall, adult figure of a man wearing a long, wolf pelt over his shoulders. It’s hard to recognize his features inside your captivity – you can’t even move your head to follow him. He has a short, soldier haircut in swampy, green colour with glowing, orange gemstone braids all over it; when he opens his mouth, several of his sharpest teeth emit a strange, orange glow.

He stops between you and the bear, and you can see his features even closer – both of his eyes are glass-like. Softly, he puts his palm over the crystal head of the “Oracle Beast” and pauses. “You are too enormous to transport and sell,” his soft voice reckons unhappily the silence he himself created… He raises his strange, thick, blue-covered grimoire in white gold pattern, as if it is an expensive jewellery and not a magic book, and… a small diamond symbol in the centre of it. He has the grimoire of the Diamond Kingdom – foes of the Clover Kingdom.
>>
“That was my original plan,” he begins to salivate, as if a mad dog. Clearly aware of this fact, he virtuously removes the drool with a neat, velvet handkerchief. Angrily, he slams the grimoire against the bear’s head and shatters the gemstone layers releasing the bear’s eyes alone from the crystal prison. “Let’s not waste this prospect,” he continues talking to himself as you are left with no other capability but to watch his glass eyes slowly turn the same variegated colour as the bear’s, until his short trance is over and their eyes turn normal.

He pauses for a second and then runs his long fingers over his forehead. He hems, as if unpleasantly surprised by what he just saw in his future. “I should’ve just sold it instead,” he repeats as he turns away from the bear and squeezes his hand into a fist. The massive crystal holding the bear in place begins to quickly crumble and shatter until nothing but a pile of moonstone-like pieces remain… your half of the crystal stands untouched – somehow.

You recoil, metaphorically, as he finally turns to you. You are unmoving – even your eyes – so there is no way he knows you are watching. “I was not expecting to find children here,” he asks, himself or you? He doesn’t make it clear… He shakes his head as he looks at the bear cub – that one that is still thrice your size – whom is still unharmed. “But it’s lucky it were none of the Magic Knights…” He raises his grimoire, “This won’t take long.”

That is the last thing you remember.

*** *** ***

You wake up in cold sweat from what you can only describe as a lucid nightmare. Your eyes dart the blue-red mosaic walls of the room you find yourself in. There is a warm, orange light coming from the hanging chandeliers. Your body, still extremely sensitive to the cold, shudders from the breeze entering from the half-opened windows.

You are laying in extremely comfortable bed with several layers of cloth serving as an extremely dense matrass. Your try to move your head, but the pain makes it hard to do so… instead, you shift your eyes. There are several of alike beds in here, some of them appear to be occupied by… Olyver and the rest of the boys. They are still breathing, albeit heavily, but unlike you are still deeply asleep. You take a deep breath – you are still alive.

Your shoulders painfully jolt as you hear and turn towards the creak of a door. Iron hells slam the cobblestone floor as Captain Charlotte, wearing her full uniform, enters. She is holding a brass bowl in which, you soon discover, is a disgusting soup to heal your wounds made out of the worse herbs and vegetables known to man.

“You are awake,” Captain Charlotte speaks softly as she approaches and takes a sit by your side, “Cynthia.”

Your voice is coarse– you never wish to stay hours entrapped in a crystal ever again. “W-what happened?”
>>
Meekly, her blue eyes glance away from you. She puts her hand on the edge of the bed, “I apologise to you.”

“I… I remember we were searching for an ‘Oracle Beast’, we found it and then… there was a crystal trap.”

“And you encountered an intruder from the Diamond Kingdom. I am sorry it took me that long to find you.”

“Were you following us?” you ask her, trying your best not to sound as if you are accusing her.

She hesitates to nod, “Yes, as I usually do – the forest is dangerous, I’d never allow the boys to go by themselves.”

> “Since we are still alive, does that mean you managed to defeat this intruder? Where is he now?”
> “I’m sorry, I couldn’t stop that person from seeing his future – and I had the chance…”
> “I-I was afraid I was going to die. I’m so happy you -were- actually following us.”

The unfinished Cynthia is coming along nicely.

On a possibly unrelated note, we love your work Melk.
>>
You heave.

“I realized there was something wrong with those crystal traps long before, we should’ve left sooner. Sorry.”

Charlotte Roselei tilts her head to give you a surprised onlook. After a lingering pause, her lips curl into a kind arch as she coolly lifts her long, golden braid with her fingertips and puts it behind her shoulder. Afterwards, she puts both of her hands on her iron shark-fin helmet and takes it off to place it on her knees. She clears her throat before finally breaking the silence. “You had no reason to suspect it was laid by a Diamond Kingdom intruder.”

“No,” you mutter to yourself as you clench your aching body, “But I had a bad feeling, and I did not act on it.”

“I really do not think you should be blaming yourself,” she says, “But we can’t avoid making all the mistakes.”

“He was about to destroy me, Olyver and everyone else,” you shudder at the thought, “With just a snap…”

Captain Charlotte stands up from the edge of the bed and, in incredibly elegant and gracious manner, she paces to stop by your bed’s side. You flinch as she raises her fingerless gauntlet and places it on your head. “He didn’t.”

Her stern, yet at the same time comforting and extremely reassuring voice immediately slashes your trepidations.

Awkwardly, you put one of your hands on-top of another to warily rub it. Defeated, you exhale to face her.

She does not hold her hand on your head for too long – she is not that affectionate. Her eyebrow raises she looks at your determined yet at the same time dejected glance, “Is there something else you are worried about?”

“I keep trying, but I just can’t seem to be able to sense any of the traps… If I could, I’d be able to sense his.”

“Unlikely,” her emotionless voice makes such a sharp cut even more painful. Once she realizes that, she quickly explains, “That man was powerful. His traps were well-hidden and magically placated: extremely hard to notice.”

“I-I see,” despite that, you were unable to sense even Captain’s obvious traps in the labyrinth. “Was he caught?”

She looks at the window and shakes her head, “He got away, but an invader from enemy Kingdom is a very serious matter. I am still waiting for report from Bonnie and Dorothy Unsworth from the Coral Peacock. If he was all by himself, and he returned back to the Diamond Kingdom, then there is nothing that we can do about this.”

“I-is it someone you know?” you ask her, dubiously.

“No, I have never seen this man before on the front-lines. The fact that he knows about the ‘Pink Ash Forest’ and, furthermore, the ‘Oracle Beast’ – a historic fable of the Clover Kingdom – should be concerning. You should rest.”

It is your time to shake your head, “No, I only have a few days left until the challenge is over. I have to go back to work.”
>>
“It is the middle of the night, tailor Cynthia,” Charlotte says authoritatively. You shove your hands into the blanket and stare her down, although your body quickly gives it and you find yourself unable to preserve a stern posture.

Suddenly, the door smashes open once again and Sol rushes inside. Before Captain Charlotte can react, the brown-skinned woman grabs her into an extremely tight hug – despite the metal armour – and begins rubbing her face onto her stomach. Visibly annoyed and embarrassed, Captain tries to forcefully shove Sol away from herself.

“Char’! Oh Char’! I was so worried after I heard what happened! I’m so-so-so happy you are unscathed, Char’!”

“Captain Charlotte,” Roselei coldly reminds the affectionate woman as she continues to push her away.

Sol blinks as her light-blue eyes notice you, “Little Cynthia! Oh, I’m happy you are safe-and-sound as well!”

“Y-yes, Captain Charlotte saved us,” you bow your head bashfully and awkwardly at this strange display.

> “Please, Captain Charlotte – I still have a lot of work left unfinished. I -promised- to finish them in time.”
> “If this is an order, I have no choice but to rest. I hope you will be able to capture this intruder soon.”
> “I remember him mentioning making money on the ‘Oracle Beast’, but it was too big to transport, he said.”

Maybe ask in /qtg/ if anyone there has suggestions on somewhere to get art for a quest, either as a request or for a reasonable rate.

“I remember him mentioning making money on the ‘Oracle Beast’, but it was too big to transport, he said.”

Both Sol and Charlotte look at you with a noticeable surprise. “Did you manage to talk to him?” Charlotte asks.

Fighting the pain, you shake your head, “No, he was talking to himself when I was turned into a crystal.”

For some reason, Captain Charlotte looks even more flabbergasted at this. She does not explain herself. In thought, she places a hand to her side. “He had a Diamond Kingdom’s grimoire for sure, but if he was planning to ‘sell’ the ‘Oracle Beast’, who would he do that to?” Her blue eyes turn cold as she mutters, “How confusing…”

Sol, as if a school child, raises her hand into the air to interfere, “What if he was planning to forward it to their king?”

“The king?” Charlotte narrows her eyes, “From what I heard from Vice-Captain Lanarel, those predictions are not worth giving away riches, or storming into an enemy Kingdom, for. That sounds like a very ill-elaborate plan.”

Sol, too, puts her hand to her side to copy Charlotte, “But people in the Diamond Kingdom don’t know that, right? They probably just heard about magic which can predict the future and think it is more powerful than it is.”

Charlotte continues to ponder but she hangs her mouth slightly open once she realizes you are here to hear them.

“Captain Charlotte… can I ask, why were you, a Magic Knight Captain, trailing behind us all on your own?”

You can see her visible freeze at your question. You quiver at, perhaps, an uncomfortable and rude enquiry – it’s not, really. She coughs into her closed fist and, in a royal fashion, she raises her chin to look at you like a noble – as she is – would, “Whatever do you mean, tailor Cynthia? As I said previously, that forest is very dangerous.”

“It -is- very dangerous,” you nod, “But why didn’t you just forbid the boys from going in there? Or ask somebody else to keep an eye on the boys? You are very busy; I seems like a waste of your time to trail them every time.”

Sol lowers her head to look at staggered Charlotte and then at you. She pouts, “Little Cynthia! Is it not enough Char’ saved your lives? You are lucky it was Captain Char’ there who followed you – with a foe that dangerous!”

Still, you are curious. You narrow your eyes at her, “Were you interested in the ‘Oracle Beast’ as well, Captain?”

“O-of course not!” Charlotte’s ears turn red as she regains her composure. Fervently, she grabs her helmet to put it under her armpit. She turns, and her massive cloak swings like a gigantic, blue wave – the strike of such flap echoes through the room. “It is a childish pursuit – none of my interest. There is nothing I am curious about.”
>>
With that, she excuses herself before you can ask her anything else, and leaves the medical ward. Sol gives you a ‘you shouldn’t have said that’ kind of look and, after hanging you a persimmon fruit from her pocket, she rushes after Captain Charlotte. How… weird. You sigh in a defeated manner as you spread out your arms above yourself before falling dead-weight on your bed. Despite the urgency, you are in no condition to work through the night; your body is aching, your head is hurting and your mana has been drained against the “Pink Ash Forest’s” wildlife.

Who knows how much angrier Charlotte is going to get if she learns you sneaked out despite her orders to work on the dresses? Will she be impressed by your resolve and grit? Unlikely. She will have the final say on whenever you will, or will not, become the next Head Tailor here – those are the last few days, you need to stay in her good grace. Resolved, you tuck yourself into the less-than-comfortable blanket and, soon afterwards, you drift asleep.

You were stressed, so, of course, it is of no surprise you nightdream again. Your dream recites: a musing of beautiful, exotic, somewhat likely idealistic panoramas flies by and through you at the speed of a tempest wind as you slowly walk further and further into the unknown. It is not lucid, your body acts in a way you can’t direct… thought, even if you wanted to, you would continue to walk. The loose red thread that flows deep into the whiteness of your path home continues to wrap itself around your finger… But by now, you almost ignore it.

Your mana has been restored.

Health [4/5]

You open your eyes in delight. You have no time to ponder on your dreams. You raise your much healthier and stronger body – sleep did you wonders, you almost forget about nearly dying to a tower-sized bear or being crushed by a powerful enemy mage… Damn it. Your shake your head before you decide to take a look arou-

Right in front of your bed stands a young looking, lilac-haired woman of slightly below average height. She looks exactly what someone would say if tasked with describing a witch, albeit a more glamorous one. She wears a pointed hat with a wide brim and a garland of natural flowers wrapped around the cone's base. She has a long, lavender-violet cloak with a Magic Knight Squad insignia – a Coral Peacock. She has incredibly puffy, light-coloured short pants, almost resembling pantaloons. Her eyes are tightly closed. She is snoring - there is a small snot bubble quivering from under her nose. It takes you a while to remember that this is Dorothy Unsworth of Coral Peacock.

She is a Magic Knight Captain, of the same rank as Captain Charlotte – although her group is lower than Blue Rose.

She does not seem to be reacting to you in any way. Is she waiting for you to leave your bed to take it?

You toss aside the blanket and scuttle off the bed – you have been sleeping in your clothing: they are all wrinkled now. Your bed stands in a corner away from where the boys rest – but perhaps, it’s for the best you are dressed.

Cautiously, you approach Dorothy – who is even smaller in height than you, if only by a tiny-bit.

“H-hello,” you mumble awkwardly to see no reaction – the woman continues to sleep. You sigh before raising your voice, “I said ‘Hello’, Captain Dorothy Unsworth, is it? Is there anything I can help you with or are yo-?”

Her snot bubble pops. You are interrupted mid-sentence as a sudden, intangible and invisible magic wind lifts her mantle’s hem above her head, obstructive your view. You stumble back only to find the woman shoving her head in your face – as if she teleported. Her blue eyes overflow with soothingly glimmering, indigo magic. She smiles.

You clear your throat awkwardly as you, again, try to repeat your question, “Is there anything I can help you-”

Chipperly, she tucks your sleeve to lower you to her level and examines you. Soonish, she lets go of it and places two of her fingers, as if scissors, around her right eye. “No need to be flabbergasted, petite tailor girl! It’s just me!”

You bow, unsure on how to tackle such a high-spirited Captain. You stay silent to allow her to continue.

“I can’t believe Charlotte has been hiding somebody with tailor magic from me – You’re just the person I need!”

You blink in confusion.

Playfully, she puts a finger to her lips, “I have a tiny-tiny request for you, tailor girl – Cynthia, I believe it was!”

With that, from beneath her mantle a scroll is lifted by her lilac magic. The holding seal breaks as it unwraps right in front of her as a lengthy parchment. You are unable to see it. She narrows her eyes and keeps you in suspense…

“I want you…” a brilliant, purple streak swirls in her eyes clock-wise. “To tailor-make me a ‘Supreme Blanket’! Let’s see… It needs to be soft but not too soft as to have me keep a bad posture while I am wearing it. It needs to be neither thin or thick – a perfect balance so I can hold it over my shoulders while traveling. Make sure it is not one of those bad types that causes skin itching or makes you allergic either. I want it to be lightweight as well.”

Sounds reasonable so far.
>>
“It should be easy to clean… no, it should be impossible to get dirty! Impervious to dirt, blood, ash and all those other nasty things. It needs to be water-resistant so it doesn’t get wet in a rain or if I end up swimming in a river and fire-resistant so that all your hard work is not set aflame on contact with fire. Hm, you should make it impervious to damage as well – natural or magical! Yes, that would be wonderful, else I will have to bring it back to repair -a lot-, I don’t want to. Or, if it can fix itself that’s a compromise, wouldn’t you say? It should be cosy and fluffy, like a cloud, perhaps enchanted so that the sleep is relaxing and calm. Oh, right, nearly missed this – one side of it should glow in the dark to act as a torch while the other side should be able to conceal you in the dark.”

You were unable to interrupt her request. You open your mouth, but not fast enough to avoid another addition.

“And no lint!”

“But that’s impossib-”

“Oh, don’t worry,” she beams at you, “I’m willing to pay any fee you name! And there’s no particular time limit!”

Who knows what insane amounts of money the Captains of Magic Knight Squads are given by the Magic Emperor?

> “I-I’m not that kind of tailor, and my Linen Magic is not powerful enough to do even half of those things.”
> “This order is beyond my capabilities. I’ll see what I can do but I think you should look for somebody else.”
> “I think there’s been a misunderstanding. I am a tailor, but my magic is not powerful enough for your request.”
> “Are you sure? It will take at least one year for me to make, and will cost a fortune for the effort and materials.”

You speak with exaggerated hesitation: “Are you sure? It will take an indeterminate amount of time and money.”

She immediately retorts with a cheery wink. “That’s what I said! Money, time – I’m not putting any limits here!”

You harrumph: just how carefree this person can be? Is she trusting you to give a reasonable price just like that? You had a slight hope she would refuse such an aberrant proposition. You clear your throat noisily to try and make her pay attention. She straightens her petite body but remains merrily smiling. “Unknown amount of time and money, Captain Dorothy,” you repeat, making sure to stress the absurdity of your side of the deal. She just nods.

“Take as long as you need, Cynthia,” without warning, she leans even closer to stare into your eyes. You dream-like haze, as if a powerful drug, hugs your mind for a meagre second – everything turns lilac-white before a massive, all-seeing eye is all you are able to behold... Your breathing turns hard and harsh as you stumble back.

Dorothy lazily bobs her head, “You have no idea how long I have been searching for somebody with magic like yours! And to think you are already so recognised that Charlotte is employing you – how lucky, eh? And you are so accepting and agreeing – don’t scoff – I mean it in the best way possible! Make sure to keep me up-to-date-ta-da!”

You -do- scoff. “My affinity is Linen Magic, are you fine with your blanket to be made out of linen?”

“Of course, as long as it has everything I pinkie-asked for!”

You sigh, “I-I have to warn you that I am is not powerful enough to do even half of those things. However, there are other ways to apply those effects such as magical dyes… the price of them will have to be added to the cost.”

Maybe now she will give up?

No, instead, without thinking, she tightly grabs your hand with her own into an incredibly weak handshake.

“Then it’s agreed, I’ll check on your progress a month? Now, before I make Charlotte wait any longer… bye-bye!”

With a single tap of her pointed shoes her entire body is pushed into motion. As if on clear ice, with an incredible speed and a cheeky giggle, she’s dashed towards the locked door – still facing you. For a brief moment you worry that she is going to slam straight into the locked entrance but, that does not happen – the door opens by the use of her lilac magic and the moment she leaves, it slams shut with such force the shelves, windows and chandeliers are sent trembling… An impactful exit, to say the least. You continue staring at the door completely flabbergasted.

Is there still time to tell her “No”? Can you refuse a Magic Knight Captain? This is once in a lifetime opportunity…

Your eyes slowly dart away before you notice Olyver – sitting cross-legged on the bed – visibly pouting at you.
>>
He’s attempting to sound nonchalant. “A-amazing of you, tailor Cynthia, the Captain of the Coral Peacock herself was here to make a personal request – this is the first time in my life I saw her talk! This is all just… incredible!”

You rub your eyes to hide the clear blush on your cheeks. You shake your head, “It is only because I have, what she thinks, is a unique magic – but she’s wrong… There is nothing in her request I can do that others cannot.”

“I wouldn’t be able to accept her request. There were just too many impossible things there for me to do.”

“You are right,” you say with a weak smile, to which he looks back baffled, “But I have a few ideas in mind for that.”

He looks away – dejected. “That is why you were able to do so many amazing thing here in just a week of time…”

You tidy up your bed as per gallantry and politeness. You shrug your shoulders as you turn to face Olyver:

“This is the last day of your challenge… let’s do our best.”

He stops for a brief second before he rubs his eyes with his sleeve and nods, “Yes, but I’m winning it!”

He might be right, he has too many advantages, connections, tricks and talents you do not. Still, you chuckle as to not appear too defeated or weak; you haven’t done so bad for a completely newcomer here! You leave the medical wing first, and without even bothering with breakfast – you stride back to your workshop. From what you remember, Tugela have already left on her special mission together with Alice and Tresses – you hope they will manage to succeed in it without much of a hassle. Now that you manage to look at the inner workings of a Magic Knight Squad, a lot of it resembles a dysfunctional family… there’s a certain charm to it. Despite being petulant children personality-wise, all of people here are powerful and amazing. You shake your head as your mind begins to drift away from what you -should- be focusing on – your challenge of becoming Blue Rose’s Head Tailor…

You enter the workshop to find, once again, piles of damaged clothes. It is too moist here, so, due to the lack of windows, you keep the door half-opened to allow the damp air to leave. You have a day to finish Elvira’s present, Vice-Captain’s gown as well as to repair all of today’s uniforms. You feel as if that will not be enough, still. How will your father react if you return home, practically, empty-handed? How long does it take a letter to return?!

“Cynthia?” Lilth’s voice makes you shudder as the boy knocks on the door before entering – this is the first time you see him without his glasses. He has very beautiful, green-apple hued eyes – you try not to look. You nod. You ask him to keep the door half-open. “P-Pero won’t be able to come today: he’s still recovering from yesterday.”

“Without Tugela and Pero, we are half-short, how are you feeling – are you ready to work until we finish?”
>>
“Yes, after being inside the crystal it still hurts a bit to move my body but I can manage. I heard from Olyver that you two fought a massive, tower-sized bear? H-he is not exaggerating, is he? He wouldn’t.” He says with suspicion.

You gleam a bit – certainly, even you would find it hard to believe if you didn’t have to face the “Oracle Beast” personally. “I wouldn’t say it was as big as a tower – but it was as big as a house, Olyver is not lying. There was another bear who was already trapped in crystal when we arrived – the cub, I believe. He was thrice my size!”

“W-was it?” Lilth bends his head upwards, “A-and you were not afraid fighting something so big at all?!”

“I was afraid,” you backpedal with a slight chuckle, “Olyver was not. This was the first time I saw him use his grimoire spells, and, I’ll be honest, they are powerful. He will become a Magic Knight regardless of this challenge.”

“Olyver is amazing!” Lilth nods enthusiastically at your praise. Too much, he is still supposed to be your employee. “Those crystal traps,” Lilth intrudes in cumbersome manner, “They were set by intruder from enemy kingdom?”

With a rough gesture, you nod. However, immediately after, you shake your hand in front of your face as if to take his mind away from this topic – there is no need for Lilth to worry about this. “Yes, but both Captain Charlotte and Captain Dorothy are on his trail – he is not going to cause any trouble for us again, I feel. I’m sure they’ll let you look for ‘Oracle Beast’ after they make sure it’s safe… make sure to stay safe with giant beasts roaming around.”

“That massive bear was an ‘Oracle Beast’… did you manage to look at its eyes?” he adjusts his absent glasses.

You shake your head, “No. I didn’t. My future is a surprise, and I prefer to keep it that way – good or bad.”

“I-I don’t understand,” Lilth admits frankly, “What if you saw a horrible event you could then prevent?”

“Could I?” you exhale a bit annoyingly, “Or is it set in stone and I have to suffer knowing I can’t stop it?”

He pauses. He, too, does not know how “Oracle Beast’s” magic works. “Exactly, so, as I said – not interested.”

He approaches the dress you have been working on – Elvira’s dress. “Do you think we’ll finish it by today?”
>>
“Yeah, it’s almost finished – in fact, I’m thankful we picked one of the easier designs,” you smile to yourself before your mood is immediately tarnished as soon as you look at Vice-Captain’s gown. Without being able to use your Linen Magic, the work on such an ill and delicate dress proves to be a very time-consuming hassle. “This, however, I am not sure – I might have to work the entire night to get it done – I hope the Vice-Captain will appreciate it.”

“I have never seen her, the Vice-Captain. She is very elusive, and very shy. I can’t imagine her wearing this dress.”

Maybe she was too shy to ask a boy – Olyver, to repair her gown – it’s obviously old – you ponder in a thought as you run your fingers across and through the fabric, “Gown, Lilth. When is the next occasions for her to wear it?”

“Apparently, tomorrow,” Lilth says after a brief thought, “There will be a ceremony to decide who will be the next Head Tailor in the ballroom… how come you have not heard about this, Cynthia? Did Cap’ Charlotte not tell you?”

You harrumph. “Apparently not… not that it matters – this is my only set of clothes.” You pause your hands over Lanarel’s unfinished cobalt gown, “Lilth… Tell me honestly, do you think I have the chance to win this contest?”

He bobs his head with a calm smile, “I think your chances are pretty high – considering everyone here, and not just the Magic Knights, are going to get a vote. I’m surprised at how many friends you made in just a week’s time!”

“Favouritism and nepotism is pleasant, but they should be judging our tailoring skills…”

“Do you have anything in mind? Olyver has been coming up with new, creative ways almost every day.”

There is no use in panicking; there is no need to burden yourself with even more labour. You decide to concentrate on the work load that you are already overstretched with. Lilth joins in without too much complains, and soon the two of you fall into a steady rhythm despite the lack of man power. He prepares the clothes, you repair them, he washes and cleans them and you hang them to dry – if nothing else, this short week have made you a better tailor, and a better mage, too. It takes you several hours to take care of all the damaged uniforms, as well as several more to finally finish Elvira’s dress; you leave Vice-Captain’s gown, the hardest of the jobs, for last.

Lilth is, well deserved, satisfied with himself when you finally hang him the finished garment. Extremely worried on how it is going to look on the adult woman, or whenever she is going to like it or not, he asks if you can try it on. Due to the awkwardness of the moment, you hastily refuse – it is not the type of dress -you- would wear.

Certainly, the one obvious thing you are lacking in this workshop is a wooden mannequin. You reassure Lilth that the dress will fit her well and she will be happy about it. If he’s worried, he should ask Olyver for a wooden model. Of course, reluctant to have Olyver know anything about his crush, in the end he decides against it. He trusts you.

Being a tailor at heart, in more ways than one, you outright refuse to join Lilth when he leaves on his break for some brunch despite the fact that you have already missed breakfast. Your stomach loudly grumbles at the mere mention of the word. You always have dinner to look forwards to – you have no time to waste, even for food.

Thankfully, and gratefully, Lilth comes back an hour later with a tray of today’s essential – it is a heavy tray of all manners of meals and fruits, as well as a delicious blueberry compote. Okay, you find ten minutes to take a break.

Without using a single percent of your mana, you manage to complete the repair of the beautiful, ebony dress by the hours of the evening – about as much as you feared it was going to take. Lilth assists you until all the work is done. ‘Break a leg’ – he tells you regarding tomorrow’s verdict. You tell him the same as he leaves to give Elvira her gift – you hope he is going to stop at that, else it’s going to be awkward… You, on other hand, glare around the workshop you have been working on for the last week. Even if you win, this will not be where you will be working.

It takes you a while but, eventually, you find the entrance of Vice-Captain’s office. It is a beautifully ornamented door with deep engravings of runic texts and fonts alongside it’s border – not magical, just stunning to look at...

You try to knock, but there is no answer.

You pick a place on one of the wooden engravings that looks like a hook and, as carefully and neatly as possible, you hang the expensive gown on it. You raise your fist to knock on the door once more, but you decide against it: what if she is already sleeping? You take a step back and nod – you’ll just leave it here – she’ll find it tomorrow.

With all your duties done and dusted, and without anything else to do, you visit the dining hall in the late hours of its evening times to have some dinner. There, you fill yourself to the absolute fullest and talk to Elvira informally.

You clean your room and neatly put all your things in visible locations before you change clothes and go to sleep.

The same untouchable dream, as the one that follows you every night you feel nervous, reoccurs once again. You walk the pastel mesas and step over mercury lakes deeply enshrined in amethyst fields. Your eyes dart the beautiful landscapes you never could hope to exist. You jump, and your legs take you over immense mountains.

You wake up at the early hours of the morning – despite the short sleep, you feel yourself awake and tempered. Still, a bit lazy to escape the warm confines of your soft blanket, it takes you a bit to leave your bed. You rub your hand over your eyes before you slowly approach a bowl of water and clean your face with it. Then, you approach the mirror to make your unruly, as if fire, and red long hair. However, there, you discover two letters – a regular, plain one which most people use, and a pretty-sparkling, as if it was sprinkled with magical gemstones, blue one.

Laying on the second, you find a freshly picked, blue rose. This one’s from Charlotte. You break the wax seal:

>Residents of the Blue Rose. You might have noticed that all through this week, there has been a challenge between our new guest Cynthia and our hardworking resident boy Olyver. Hopefully, you kept an eye by who’s work you were the more satisfied or impressed by. Take this rose, and come to the ballroom to tell me and them.

Your lips twist inelegantly at the magnitude of something so banal. Why is she making it such a big deal? You exhale and inhale to calm yourself. Calm down, Cynthia. You place the letter under your special blue rose…

You turn to the second letter after – you notice that it was sent from Kikka by your father – Francis Gualdo!

>Dear Daughter; I have got your letter. I sincerely hope you are doing well. Don’t forget to act respectable to the Magic Knights, for they do a heroic but incredibly dangerous duty for us. I believe you have it in you to impress them and to get what you want – as long as you don’t forget where bricks of your home stand.
>There has been a short turmoil here on the High Street: it appears the White Yul are gaining more significance here, and more and more workshops not affiliated with them have been closing. There have been talks of raising rent to limits where anybody who is not a White Yul member won’t be able to pay – and they are willing to do so…
>The one you had sent is a strange and a bit absent-minded boy, but he is a very hard worker – you have an eye, but not in a sense of… you know what I’m trying to say here. He doesn’t have any experience with tailoring, but he is a quick learner – although he’d rather figure out something himself than question. He has been helping me with all the sudden workload I got. I wait for your quick response and, in the soon future, I wait for your safe return!

You lift your eyes from the letter with a clear worry. The damn White Yul(s) is already trying another of their disgusting overtakes, like the time with raising the requirements immediately after Patricia’s family joined them. Your shoulders crack in uneasiness as you, again, ponder if you can just leave your father be for your ambitions.

You sigh as you use your magic to freshly, and diligently, clean the nicest set of your clothes. With that done, you begin walking down the staircase in search of the ballroom – this is your first celebration of this kind here. You stumble on some Magic Knights you have never seen before and, after a brief chat, they guide you to the location.

You are unsure of who the mad architect of the Headquarters is, but while the dueling hall was nothing but primal in its look, the ballroom is the complete opposite. There is a sparkling marble floor with aquamarine crystals embellishing a Blue Rose emblem at the centre of it. Pillar towers, of the same kind as the ones in the main hall, but much taller, shinier, each with a massive, silk banner of the Blue Rose, are located at the edges of the room. Curved, as if the walls were cautiously dancing before forced to freeze forever, walls surround the room with herbarium-like patterns of bluish florae on them. High above, massive golden chandeliers hang without light.
>>
Instead, the massive windows with velvet draperies – which are put away – let the bright light from the outside enter the ballroom. At the top of every square window is a part which is stained with orange-rainbow mosaic to let a different, warm light into the room, as well. Nobody is dancing (yet), so you enter further into the room to find, at the centre of it, two high-quality tables with lapis-like, crystal vases on each of them. They gleam more and more as the morning sun keeps raising higher. Standing on each table is a glass in a brass frame with stained names.

The names are yours and Olyver’s – of course. In both of the vases, multitude of the roses alike the one you found in your room, are standing. You glance side to side before you lean closer to try, and visually figure out how many roses you have compared to Olyver – both of the bouquets don’t look too shabby. You lean back once you realize just how suspicious, paranoid and pathetic you are acting. You make way as another woman you do not know the name of passes by to put her rose into Olyver’s vase. She notice you and, apologetically, she shrugs her shoulders.

You place the rose you have been holding into your own vase, obviously.

You force yourself not to pout. You step away from the vases until the verdict is done. You spot Charlotte calmly discussing something with Sol, Wardress Virginia with all by herself discreetly drinking a glass of wine, Cleole sitting all by herself in a gothic, dark dress, Olyver, incredibly neatly dressed, with everyone but Lilth, who seems to be missing together with Elvira… hmmmm. Tresses, Alice and Tugela are absent, neither can you see Bonnie.

You take a second glance and your immediately harrumph – there is no Vice-Captain in her ebony gown either…

> Go talk to Sol and, perhaps, discuss something with Charlotte. (You can specify the topic or questions).
> Go ask Virginia how she is doing – from the looks of it, you worry she might require your Homely Blanket.
> Go join Cleole and ask her how she and her grimoire have been doing. (You can specify the topic or questions).
> Go look for Elvira and Lilth – you can’t help but be curious at her reaction at the fruit of your toil.
> Go to the Vice-Captain ’s office and try again to get her to open the door and talk to you.
> Approach Olyver’s group and try to ease the tension of the challenge and keep your relationships friendly.
> Ignore everyone and just step away until everyone had put their rose into (hopefully yours) vase.

You approach Cleole to say hello and admire her beautiful, gothic dress – is Charlotte planning further festivities to celebrate the results? You hope not, that would be awkward – and you have no idea how to dance. With her usual, plain expression, she tries to give you the same courtesy, although in her regular pessimistic manner.

“Don’t take it too hard if you do not win,” she monotones coldly before she takes out a small, linen bag to offer you a batch of glistering truffle sweets. Recalling the last time, you kindly refuse. “Olyver has the home ground.”

Hesitantly, you have no other answer but to nod at her words – you believe this is just her way to reassure you.

She is still wearing incredibly thick black eyeliner and heavy ebony lipstick – it is professionally applied but unnerving, none the less. Gingerly, she lifts her strawberry-coloured eyes to look at you with incredible tension.

“I gave my rose to you, f-friend Cynthia,” her lips quiver to form a scrawny smile, “If you are wondering.”

Your smile is much brighter. “Thank you, but I am not sure why? I did not repair any of your clothing in particular.”

She shakes her head before she continues to coldly drawl her voice, “No, a clean and fresh set of clothes is not going to survive the night near my cursed grimoire anyway, so there is no need. I -would- trust you with them.”

You hesitate and, with visible remorse, you click your tongue, “I’m sorry for slapping you back in the saunas.”

Again, she shakes her head, “I know you did not mean it – it did not hurt at all. It’s my fault for not being careful.”

“No, it’s not your fault – I can only imagine how tired you are right now, and were back then. But if you are now worried yet you still want to go to the saunas I, your friend, will gladly go there with you. I enjoyed myself, too.”

Cleole simple keeps a short, quiet pause at your proclamation. Her cheeks turn pink as she bows her head.

Then, she raises her long-sleeved hand to point you towards the vases, “It looks like the Captain Charlotte is calling for you.”

You promise Cleole to return shortly as you come back to the bouquet vases. Olyver is standing there too. The tailor boy is acting in concerned manner, even more than you. You look at the gathering of dozen of flowers in the crystal vase which represent your skill and hard work… For Olyver, keeping his Head Tailor position is only a means to an end – as, if he wins, in six months, he is going to go and become a Magic Knight – perhaps the first “male” in the Blue Rose overall. You care for the opportunities and payment of this position, but temporally…
>>
“It seems like most people are here. Now, I have a few ‘votes’ who were unable to attend today.” Charlotte raises her magical, bladeless handle to have multiple thorny briars, tightly clutching one rose each, lift and place them into the vases. She places most of those roses into your vase, although a few of them go towards Olyver as well…

Tugela and… Alice, perhaps? Maybe the Vice-Captain, despite her not being here? Surely, it’s not from Tresses.

“So?” Olyver breaks the silence as he continues to squeeze his hands into fists and back, “Can you tell us?”

You give a silent nod to that. Come on, don’t the Magic Knights here have better things to attend to, Charlotte?

She loudly scoffs and harrumphs as she then takes a few steps forwards to thoughtfully inspect both of the vases. Loudly, she flicks her wrist and thus, slaps the air with her gorgeous, blue, lace sleeve. From her magic, one more blue rose bloom between her fingers – the thorns of it grow as if to avoid harming her skin. She turns around.

“While it is wonderful yet awkward, it seems the roses are in even amount. It’s left up to me to decide this…”

You have not made a single personal request for Charlotte, and she refused any you offered… What about Olyver?

Her speech is suddenly interrupted by a deafening rumble. As if thunder, the entire room and everything in it begins to tremble. Then, within a blink, a blinding glow emits from every cranny of the ballroom – from the corners, from beneath the marble floor, from the magnificent frescas up-high as well as tall wooden ceilings.

Everything turns dark for a moment before the clear-sky light behind the windows is replaced by… an outlandish, cobalt shine. It is… snowing, yet the snow looks as if falling, magical silver. Is this part of the ceremony? You gasp. Charlotte looks distressed, her grimoire is already glowing and floating by her side, as if she is battle-alarmed.

Everyone else in the room looks completely confused, none of them look as if they know what’s going on…

> Take out your grimoire and stick to Charlotte and Olyver. Don’t act too rashly and wait to see what’s going on.
> Rush away from Charlotte to Cleole – you can’t allow her to be knocked out and slumbering.
> Charge towards one of the windows and attempt to break the expensive glass to see if it’s all just an illusion.
> Release your grimoire and cast a Healing Blanket on yourself just in case something worse is about to happen.
> Rush towards Sol and the door she is standing nearby to – quickly ask her to break it open with her Earth Magic.

You loosen the belt and unclasp the lock on your pouch. Post haste, you take out your light-silver grimoire and smack it open. You keep it tightly in your hand – you are unsure how safe it will be to let it hover. Olyver does the same with his grimoire. The boy opens his mouth to ask something of Charlotte but decides to remain silent…

The chandeliers begin to madly dangle from another potent tremor. The shining azure light envelops the windows before a freezing cold air – as if brought from the Spade Kingdom itself – begins to enter and chill the ballroom.

A harsh, rasp voice booms through the room as a spell is cast. “Snowglobe Magic: Model Village,” it echoes.

Suddenly, a massive, as big as the wall heights, ethereal face in unholy, bluish colours emerges from the air – everyone’s attention is immediately drawn to the head of a man with a long, untidy hair that disappears into the aether beneath his neck. A long fringe streak of his hair lays, as if snake, all across his face. He has some kind of birch hairclip stuck to his left side. His eyes appear incredibly tiny and sparkless. His eyebrows are small, long and sharp. When he opens his mouth, he is obviously missing several of his teeth – at least five of them, if not more.

After making a few turns, the enormous, spectral head turns to Charlotte, who immediately grips her handle.

“Who are you?!” she immediately demands of the man.

The head comes even disgustingly closer as he narrows one of his eyes. He opens his mouth, but his voice echoes from all directions of the room. “The ‘Cool Beauty’ Charlotte Roselei, in her flesh! I’m so-so-so-so-so happy! Oh, I am so happy to finally have you here in my hands, my-my-my-my-my beautiful and charming Charlotte. I waited for this moment so-so-so-so-so long, you are even more charming up so close.” Roselei shudders at the attention.

“Hey, you!” Sol shouts and points her fist angrily at the floating head, “The only ones who get to touch Captain Char’ are the girls from the Blue Rose! Get your annoying face off her you cree-”

She doesn’t finish. A massive, wraithlike hand manifests from the empty air and smashes her so suddenly and hard, the tomboy girl is sent flying across the room and into the stone wall with a painful and blasting landing.

Then, another hand appears at the other side of the ballroom. In a second, both of them come close and begin floating above you. Disturbingly, the voice begins to hum as the hands lower and begin caressing the Captain.

“We are going to have so-so-so-so-so much fun together, Roselei. The most beautiful woman of all – all mine…”
>>
The voice cries loudly in pain as the ground rumbles once again and hundreds of sharp thorny briars envelop the hands and smash them into the marble floor. The ethereal hands disappear into a blue, ghastly dust to escape.

“Ouch. That was not very-very-very-very-very nice of you, Charlotte Roselei. I guess it will take a little while to get you-you-you-you-you to like me. Until then… where was it? Sleeping dust, a tiny bit else it will probably kill you…”

A dazzling snowstorm of purple flakes, as if the ceiling is made out of winter clouds, swiftly begins to descent…

> Try to find a shelter beneath one of the tables – you don’t want the sleeping dust touching you.
> Trust Charlotte to protect you – stay by her side and, in any case, be ready to heal her and yourself.
> It is a huge risk – how magical is the Sleeping Dust? Use Homely Blanket on yourself to try and resist the effects.

As the cursed snow continues to descend, you look towards Cleole who is still oblivious to the danger. In haste, you flick through the pages to find the one spell you require. The black text on the paper begins to glow with an intense silver light. “Linen Magic: Weighted Blanket,” you say and sway your hands as, thread by thread, an immense hematite-like blanket spreads into existence above you, Olyver and Charlotte – it’s dull, gray shadow guides you. Charlotte is already surging with the magic of her own – the briars are spreading all over the walls.

“Olyver,” you shout as you point your head towards Cleole, although you make sure to clear enough to make Captain Charlotte aware of your plan, as well. “My magic seems to be working on blocking the snow – your spell should be able to do the same – if not better. I’m going to protect Cleole – we can’t let her fall asleep right now.”

Charlotte grips her handle. The lush briars, which are now covering the walls of the ballroom, emit a blinding, blue light before they begin to bloom and spread out across the entire ceiling of the chamber as if webs of a tarantula.

Some of the dust continues to fall through the openings – the ballroom is just too massive to shelter all of it.

“Brilliant idea, tailor Cynthia,” the first thing Olyver does is praise you as his own, white light engulfs his pages. “Steam Magic: Vapour Wave,” he raises his palm towards the ceiling moments before a colossal wave of cold, dense steam manifest alive and bursts high into the air. The impenetrable vapour shoves the magical dust back into the air before it spreads out as a thick layer above you and continues to double-function as a sky bulwark.

Charlotte gives you a short, acknowledging and approving nod as she continues to attempt to hold her barrier.

Your rush across the marble floor towards Cleole – you make sure to keep your blanket strictly above your head. You pass by several of the Blue Rose Magic Knights, as well as employees of the mansion, laying unconsciously on the cold floor – already affected by the sleeping dust. By the time you reach Cleole, your Weighted Blanket begins to disintegrate. Thankfully, Cleole is not defenceless – she invites you into her newly made, huge, alabaster dome.

“It seems like we are under attack,” she informs you in a cold, relaxed manner, “Someone with powerful magic.”

You grip your grimoire closer to your chest, “He’s pouring some kind of sleeping powder on us.”

She pessimistically bows her head, “Once again, I am being a meagre disruption and having to be worried about…”

“We just have to wait – there is no way he’ll be able to hold this spell for long – nobody has that much mana!”
>>
Before you can hear Cleole’s answer, the man’s spectral hand grabs into Charlotte’s briar overgrowth and, as if he was removing weed, it cuts and rips her magical creations crudely off the walls and the ceiling. Once again, the pained voice of the man booms through the ballroom as Charlotte forces every single thorn to impale further.

The hand breaks and disappears into a ghastly, blue gale before another replacement is born from the mana air.

“I’m not sure he is going to be out of mana any time soon,” Cleole whispers pessimistically. She grips her grimoire.

A powerful, daunting and, to be honest, frightening mana floods the ballroom – even Cleole stumbles on her feet from the critical efflux. The culprit is Virginia and the immense mana she is releasing in her irritation. Her body is surrounded by a scorching, white fire – three massive rings of flames are spinning around her like mad wheels.

She points two fingers at Cleole and her grey-blue eyes demandingly and authoritatively flare up as if stars.

She turns towards the spinning head and her grimoire begins to glow…

“Angel Fire Magic: Light of the Divine Order,” she whispers and, for a brief second, the entire room is blinded by a white radiance. An immense heat is felt as you close your eyes and clean to Cleole’s alabaster pillars – she does the same. When the brightness begins to fade, your find the dust the man had previously poured completely gone. In addition, the man’s massive, spectrally pale head and hands are nowhere to be found – either. Amazing.

“You are going to be so-so-so-so-so annoying. I am not interested in-in-in-in-in you, what an ugly woman,” his voice echoes through the ballroom as another flare from outside the unnatural outdoors behind the windows eclipses the room in blue light. “Snowglobe Magic: Living Miniatures,” he incantates. You prepare for the worse.

Born from the sapphire light, hungry and dirty rodents at least thrice your size start to appear across the ballroom. All of them have a dirty, scorched fur and hungering, almost predatory, red eyes. The a-few-dozen of them slaver and droll. They notice the smell of some of the women here – most asleep – before they start crawling towards.

One of those rodents begins creeping towards you and Cleole. Cleole throws a short, uncertain glance at Virginia – who is not busy with not one but two “rats”, and then towards you – pondering. From the top of the ceiling, a sudden, isolated storm of heavy sleeping dust descends – no, pours onto Charlotte and Olyver – it covers them.
>>

Mana [88/100]

Your grimoire hovers to your side as you quickly take out your wand and concentrate. You flick it at the quickly squirming rat-creature and focus your magic. “Linen Magic: Weighted Blanket,” you yelp to direct a glistering, gray and still-manifesting-on-the-fly textile straight towards the rodent with extreme speed and precision. The disgusting, withering creature is as wild and fast as your typical rat. The gruesome tail snaps the marble floor and the long claws scratch the surface as the creature comes to a complete, sudden stop. Then, just seconds before your enchanted blanket can begin wrapping itself around it, the rodent suddenly dashes to the side and dodges it.

You twist your wand in reckless manner to correct the course of the blanket, but there is no time. In a blink of an eye, the rodent closes the distance. It’s bloody, red eyes grow with every quick step and jump it makes… You lose control of your Weighted Blanket and cover yourself with your arms – instinctively, there’s no way it will save you.

A disgusting, musky odour from its blistering fur hits your nostrils: it makes you sick. The gnashing sound of its long, sharp teeth makes you loudly yelp in terror. There is no time to cast another spell… The floor rubbles beneath your feet before a powerful gust of cold wind caresses your face. You open your eyes to find Cleole tightly grasp your hand and, soon after, push you back to take you into a tight hug and shield you from the “rat”.

“Alabaster Magic: Aker’s Obelisk,” her voice gently whispers in your ear. You look back to find a long, alabaster pillar standing where the rodent creature was a while ago – the marble is completely destroyed underneath it. Cleole’s nails, each painted as if a part of painting of a celestial night sky, clutch your clothes even tighter. You can’t help but wince in pain. The both of you turn your heads as you hear another, disturbing chittering. A long, gory tail slithers behind the translucent, ivory pillar. You hold your breathe as you look to your right in a worry.

A few inches away from your face is a huge, grating “rat” maw. The red eyes of the creature stare you down...

You spend 12 mana.
Mana [76/100]

Your breathing halts. You feel as if the time slows down as you watch the rodent’s maw slowly open wide enough to bite your entire head off in, quite likely, the goriest way imaginable. Self-preservation is a powerful drug – your body does not wait for Cleole to save you. Instead, with an almost alien strength, you grip Cleole’s arms and leap with the Magic Knight’s body several meters away from the predictable, loud snap of the creature’s hungering maw. Your heart continues to drum as your shoulder collapses against the hard, marble floor of the ballroom…

There is no pain – must be the adrenaline – as the sheer, unexpected force behind your jump forces you and Cleole to roll across the cold stone ground. You land less gracefully than Cleole, who not only manages to spin back on her two feet, but also continue spell-casting using her flour-white grimoire. Your body slogs to a stop.

The starving rodent stands up on its back legs and, because of it, it appears even taller and more menacing now. The creature strikes the floor with its burned tail like a horrific whip. It hisses and clicks its teeth before its red eyes fall on you… the expensive marmoreal ground cracks as the pillar abruptly connects with the creature – the painful impact practically pushes it onto the ground. The rodent tries to crawl away but, with a single gesture of her hand, the alabaster pillar comes crashing down on the massive rodent burying it beneath the heavy rubble.

Despite the overkill – the “rat” continues to shrivel and quiver its long claw. Still, Cleole clearly has everything under control. You give her a short nod as you rush away to find Sol laying, and snoring, in rubble of her own. You keep an eye on the empty ceiling in case the man tries anything else. You quickly inspect Sol for her wounds – there is no blood, just a few scratches from the impact. Is it concussion? Nothing a magic blanket cannot fix…

“Linen Magic: Homely Blanket,” you manifest the enchanted linen which you quickly wrap Sol Marron into. The pained breathing disappears after your glowing, white blanket “soaks” into the physical injuries of her body. However, it does not wake her up – instead, she is sleeping even heavier now. Perhaps, the dust is not a poison but some kind of remedy – whatever difference that makes. You grab Sol by her shoulders and begin shaking her.

You spend 11 mana.
Mana [65/100]

“Sol, wake up Sol,” you plea, “Sol, Captain Charlotte is in danger – she needs you!”

The woman’s light blue eyes snap open. She quickly stands up, picks up her grimoire and opens it up to begin casting her spell. “Earth Magic: Rampaging Mother Earth!” she strikes the marble flooring with her palms. For a moment, the ground remains undisturbed but, eventually, massive cracks spread out further and further across it.
>>
One of the rodents notices this. Visibly agitated by the tremble, it stops gnawing – ouch! – a shoulder of one of the sleeping girls and begins rapidly dashing towards Marron. It comes close enough; you prepare to cast another spell in a worry – but there is no need. Just seconds before it is able to attack Marron, the floor breaks open and a tall, muscular earth golem erupts from beneath it. Sol’s creation grabs the rodent into its hands and crushes it.

The vile blood explodes like a smashed tomato. Sol turns her head in your direction in annoyance and worry.

“Little Cynthia! You said Char’ was in trouble?! Damn it, don’t be quiet – tell me where she is!”

You are happy she is battle ready. Your eyes quickly find a massive pile of sleeping dust still covering Charlotte… You watch Sol force her colossal golem to lift and put her on its shoulder. Damn it, Olyver, you had one job…

“Union Magic: Sif’s Blooming Nebula.”

The pile of dust explodes upwards. A raising emerald thicket, as if a cloudy, floating briar basket, storms upwards – dozens of blue roses shower the air like fireworks. Beneath the cloud stands Olyver and Charlotte – unharmed.
You turn to spot Sol jealously chewing on the neck of her cloak. She is muttering, “Captain Charlotte, why-y-y?!”

This is the first time in your life you see Compound Magic in action – it seems like a waste, almost…

“Why won’t you-you-you-you-you just sleep, my beautiful Roselei? Why are you making this-this-this-this-this so hard on me? I don’t want to harm you, not-not-not-not-not you!” A harsh, awkward grumble bounces across the walls of the ballroom. Then… a strange oily liquid begins to drip, as if a thin waterfall, from the fresca ceiling. Then, another kind of fluid mixes up with the oil – it has a white, flour-like consistency… you know what it is, cluster glue, the type that clings to clothing and is impossible to remove. Lastly, another batch of sleeping dust…

There are still some undefeated rodents spread across the ballroom, but he doesn’t care about them.

Virginia’s eyes light up as if she is possessed by some angelic power. Another white ring of fire surrounds her… Before she can cast another one of her powerful spells, however, massive blue translucent hands of the Snowglobe Magic user suddenly appear from the lingering mana in this room. Virginia is interrupted as the two hands come slamming down on her. Despite her stature, Virginia is having a hard time pushing the hands back.

“I am-am-am-am-am wearing gloves now!” his voice stutters, smugly.

“Charlotte!” Wardress Virginia shouts to her left – towards the still standing Captain Roselei.

“I know!” she shouts back. She grabs the briars growing from her Magic Tool, like a whip, before she glares away. “We have to find a way to break this spell of his – or overfill it with so much magical energy it’ll crack by itself.”

> Forecall another Weighted Blanket to protect yourself from the black oil, cluster glue and sleeping dust. Yuck.
> Sol’s golem has -two- hands – there should be enough space to hide under it. Join Sol in approaching Charlotte.
> Return back to Cleole – while she seems to be capable, you better make sure nothing of the “rain” touches her.
> Rush to the unknown injured female servant to heal her injuries. You might need to summon another blanket...

As quickly as possible – thankfully she is not far – you rush towards the injured woman. The ballroom’s sky begins to fill up with feather-white, gluey flakes. You pass by several of the women who are already asleep – they show no resistance as the mix of cluster glue and strange oil about to chain them to the ground. The hostile “rats” are unaware of the problem either – so they continue to battle the Knights in vain hope of chewing on their bodies.

Thankfully, all of them are currently too busy to hunt for you. You reach the woman who is lying unconsciously on the floor – from a horrible pain, in doubt. You prepare to weave and guard yourself and the woman from the incoming snowflake rain, but you stop as a massive earth wall spurts from the ground to suddenly bend horizontally with a loud crack and shield your head. You turn to Sol, who gives you a light signal that it was her.

You nod.

The woman looks years older than you. The shoulder part of the woman’s dress is completely destroyed, and the shoulder itself is scarred and, judging by her pale face, still losing blood. Using your grimoire, you quickly summon your spell: “Linen Magic: Homely Blanket.” You cover the woman with it fully – who knows what additional infection she has after the bite… those rodents do not look healthy. At all. As the healing transpires, you watch as the ballroom falls into more discord with the remaining Magic Knights trying to shield themselves.

After a while, when several of its spots are completely drenched in bright, red blood, your blanket begins to slowly disintegrate. Despite the fact that your blanket did close and heal all of her wounds, she refuses to wake up. You shout and gently shake her body but she just snaps her lips and continues to snore. She should be safe enough here if you just leave her be but you might need all the additional strength – do you need to use force, though?

“Snowglobe Magic: Living Miniatures.”

Before you can contemplate on the decision, and after all of the bothersome stuff the man manifested above the ballroom has fallen, another voice cracks the ballroom. It is not a voice of the man, however – but an ear-piercing hiss. The growing energy begins to turn into a much bigger flame and continuously grow into a taller spire. Then, from the aquamarine essence a creature is born – reaching for the top of the ceiling, a colossal serpent glares down on you. It is of swamp, green colour with each of its scales being gemstone-like, thorny and visibly sharp.
>>
There are deep, ebony marks – looking as if the seal of a devil – coiling all across its body. He has a snake?!

It slowly slithers its long tail – it is too sharp and heavy to be bothered by the oily glue. Jittery, the snake ascends and cleans the centre area of the ballroom with a second, single sweep of it’s tail before it half-bends the upper part of its body and its ruby eyes begin to coldly observe the “prey” around. Both, the people currently caught in the sticky cluster, and those free of it – turn their eyes at the snake. Its figure is so big it blocks the outside light…

You look at the women (and Olyver) who are still able to hold their grimoire – they are ready to fight.

What is it recently with you and large animals? And snake, of all the animals and pests in the Clover Kingdom…

You look around – it will be very hard to bypass the oily glue if you and try to walk somewhere else.

> Leave the battle to the Magic Knights, for now. Continue to try and wake up the servant woman instead.
> Look for other people who are currently heavily injured and try to heal them from a safe away distance.
> Be the first to interrupt the snake: use your Weighted Blanket to cover the snake’s red eyes and blind it.
> Virginia is still battling the Snowglobe Mage’s “hands”. Use your Weighted Blanket to restrain one of them.

>Please roll 1d10+10 – beast of three – for the cost of the spell.

>I will be forced to go on a brief hiatus from 26th to 31st and I won't be able to update after 26th. I might be able to start a new thread on 31st - as until then I won't have my PC to write or maybe access to internet. Because of this, I'm pondering if this thread can survive 2 more updates since it's on page 10 now or if it's worth making a thread for 1-2 updates.

You have about 12 threads worth of wiggle room before getting archived, so it can probably survive one more update, two might be a stretch
