The first year has come to pass for Kutcher, the newfound village for those faithfuls who follow Ultresni, the one True Spirit. The year gone by, filled with hardships and progress, saw the development of the basic infrastructure to grow the community – timber homes, a granary to store food, crops of wheat and corn, and even a primitive jetty on the river’s edge. A temple to Ultresni was also raised, as was a primitive palisade that runs around the edges of the small community.

Jonas, the preaching leader of these people, also met with the wild folk of the far East. Through the confirmation of a common enemy – the Governor of Ashton, a man named Griffiths – the wild folk agreed to help Kutcher protect itself in return for support in continued warfare against Ashton.

Now the first military force of Kutcher has been raised – a select group of volunteers, calling themselves Ultresni’s Hand, who will begin training with the rogue wild folk (led by Carmen the ranger) by the start of Winter. Their training will focus on hit-and-run guerrilla tactics, and how to take the fight to the enemy when they’re least expecting it.

Explorers from the small village also came across Medris in the North, another frontier kingdom township that was focussed heavily on preparing the river to bring more people and industry to the fertile land. The military presence, no doubt on behalf of the king or one of his Barons, was quite powerful here.

With uncertainty still on their faces, the people of Ashton prepare for the second Winter in this newfound home.

Winter has come once more and, with it, an early snow that blankets Kutcher and the surrounding lands with a pale white. Jonas and his people turn their attention to preparing for the warmer months, using simple stone and timber to assemble new tools – axes, hoes, fishing spears, pickaxes. By the end of the month, when the cold of winter has fully set in, the small township is well equipped.

Beyond this, the first cold month is spent training those in the small township the art of combat. Carmen, supposedly leader of the small band of roaming wild folk (who call themselves rangers) returned to Kutcher as the new season began. With her she brought a handful of others – wild men and women who look seasoned and well-aged by the wilds. They came with spears and swords and bows and, with cooperation and support from Jonas and his counsel, they have begun training Ultresni’s Hand.

Through the momentum that came with these exercises, several other able-bodied members of the town put up their hands to join ranks. There are now almost fifty Ultresni’s Hands, ready to defend Kutcher and the word of the faithful.

Two children came of age this month.

Would it be possible to build supply caches? By that I mean stashes of supplies that could be used by the wild folk and Ultrensi's Hand to help with their warfare. Or worst case could be useful if something dire happens to the town.

I am afraid that if we build an iron mine so close to Medris they will see us a threat to their mining operations and attack us.
What we need are spears, the most useful weapon ever invented, you can train someone to use it much faster than you can teach him how to use a sword. Besides, if Ashton is coming to attack us with cavalry the spear will be the most efficient weapon against them.
I say that we either buy iron spears from Medris or maybe the wild folk can supply us with them?
I suppose we can do so next turn if we wish to anyway. So, for this turn, my two votes would be for:
>> Write In
Can we build a forge? If we cant mine iron, we could buy it from Medris and work it ourselves into what we want. Iron ore shouldnt be that much expensive, we wont need that much anyway.
>> Train soldiers
Though i dont know if we can train much more soldiers, we dont want to be short on labourers either, but there is not much for them to do in winter anyway.
>>
>>4023696
>Supply caches, as suggested by >>4023750
I'd also propose as an alternative to training more soldiers, since we're running short on combat-worthy people:
>Gather the village midwives and train them as a simple nurse's corp.
We can't expect more than bare-bones first aid and nursing, and our divine magic will definitely be doing the heavy lifting. However, even training for things such as color-coding the severity of patient's wounds and transport of the wounded will go a long way in easing the burden on us.

I think it will also go a long way in setting a base for having a proper Order of Healers in the future. The powers we were blessed with seem to align well with such a thing, too.
>>
>>4023896
It'll also give the village women/elders a more effective way to contribute to the effort without outright joining the Hand. We could even consult with Carmen's people to gain healing knowledge from them as well.

The first month of Winter is a particularly hard one, bringing snowstorms and still, icy nights that keep those of Kutcher huddled in their homes. An expedition of people make the tiresome and dangerous trips out of the small township to build supply caches in the wild – the intention is to store food, water and extra sundries for those who are ranging in the area, or making war against Ashton.

The mission is a partial success – three small caches are setup, though their integrity is questionable given the conditions they were constructed in. The small expedition also suffered a handful of incidents as labourers dealt with the harsh conditions out of town. Thankfully there were no casualties

At home, Jonas and his leadership spent the month creating a new sect of the community, the Order of Healers. Several volunteers came forward, mostly women and children, learning all they could from your wise leaders as well as the rangers. Their teaching focusses on first aid and the basic ailment identification and treatment.

The harsh winter, and the foreboding need for a medicine corps, has many in town starting to show concern for what might be to come. Some even question why Ultresni let the faithful end up in this situation.

By the end of the first month of Winter there has been no sign of tax collectors out of Ashton.

Two children came of age this month.

Time for some morale-raising.
>Build a brewery
>Hold a festival
I want to bring back the Ultresni's Day that was suggested in the previous thread:
>a mid to late winter celebration of gratitude and appreciation of familial bonds.
>Traditions include gift giving of domestic tools and furniture to matriarchs and specifically mothers (and to a lesser extent women a young man may be trying to turn into a mother)
>It is a time to spend inside, warm and cozy with your family, nobody is expected to work.

Stress the importance of reflecting on the trials we have had to face and seeking solace in those around us and what we have managed to build so far. The brewery and serving of alcohol this season are symbolic, as a promise that we will survive this and make more in the future.

we only believe in Ultresni, no elements. She is the only divinity and her favour is what we seek.

I don't think we should go a set a mine near Medris, we nees to send scouts more to the SW in order to try discover another place from where to extract iron, or if we don't find that, at we may find something else that can be useful.
>>
>>4024769
I support your idea for a festival, I really liked it when you proposed it now may people pay attention to it.

>>
>>4024816
Agreed, but location aside, you couldn't pick a worse of year to try and build a mine, and right before an expected attack. We still haven't explored much South of us, so we may also find some other deposits in the future.
>>
Rather than building an iron mine and cause a possible confrontation with Medris, again, i advice to build a forge and buy iron ore from them, we wont need much for now, just a little to for some tools or weapons.

I am against the effigies, we do not belive in the elements, only in Ultresni, she is giving us these hazards as a way to test our resolve to her!
I support the idea of the festival, seems like something Jonas would preach.

I propose

>> Festival: Ultresni's Day
>>
>>4024839
I like that. I'll switch to
>Building a forge
instead of the brewery.

>she is giving us these hazards as a way to test our resolve to her!
We don't even necessarily have to go for the Abrahmic "God is omnipotent and challenges his faithful with catastrophies" angle. It could also be that the default state of the Universe is suffering, and Ultresni herself exists to provide safe harbour and solace to her faithful against it.
>>
>>4024864
Yeah, I even didn't want this sorta judeochristian tone our religion turned into but a few of us are just going more with it now that it was started. But your idea is good, too. I'm glad with any explanation as long as we don't break the setting, since it already states we are exclusively monotheistic and Ulstresni is the only non human power we recognize.

As for what to do, I go with the same
>Building a forge
>Festival. As has been porposed in >>4024769
>>
>>4024864
I like that, Ultresni is not testing us, but rather protecting us, just like Jonas. reminds me of Jules specch in Pulp Fiction “The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness, for he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children.''

That looks nice. It's in the same style as the QM's OP pic, kinda. If anything, I'd make the palisade encompass more area though, since it was probably made with room to grow. Maybe include a few more buildings and expand the field size. As it is, it's pretty good for a cozy settlement (maybe soon to be ravaged by marauding forces), and works as is. Drawfagging is always encouraged!

>>4025444
That's amazing anon, thank you! I don't have the skill or resources on hand to make such a map.

This one was hard as, after all was said and done, it appeared to be a tie between a Mine and a Forge. I ended up going with the forge as it makes sense to preceed the mine, and there was a lot of opposition/uncertainty about a Mine.

It also was overwhelmingly agreed to do something religious, but the ideas weren't mutual. I've landed on the festival as proposed, and heavily supported, in the first thread and now again.

The peak of Winter is spent on religion, morale, and preparing for a industrious future. More resources are set aside to assemble a crude forge in town – it’s only timber and stone, but the structure is hardy and the fires burn hot when needed. Now, with a supply of ore, Hans is adamant the township is equipped with all it needs to start forging more advanced weapons and tools.

The rest of the township continues to hunt and gather, when the cold allows, and Jonas introduces the people to a new tradition of Ultresni – the Winter Solstice, also called Ultresni Day. Held on the darkest, coldest, shortest day of the year in mid-winter, the festival involves sermons at the temple, a great feast, and afternoon of comfort and relaxation with your family, and then a night of revelling. Regardless of efforts to stop them (or not), most folk get carried away that night, cracking open the casks of ale and whisky to celebrate their new home and Ultresni herself! For the first time since settling Kutcher, over a year ago, spirits seem at their highest and the threats of Ashton, let alone the wilderness and weather around them, do not seem to dent morale.

A young boy came of age this month.

I’m not going to declare degradation of tools and the fluctuation of animal populations anymore, unless something significant happens (like an illness amongst the poultry) so you’ll just need to track that

The last days of winter are spent preparing for inevitable conflict – more folk are trained in the art of combat, more weapons are assembled, and an air of tension and trepidation begins to settle over Kutcher as the first signs of Spring show themselves.

When the first snow melts begin, and the days become far more sunny and blue-skied, the time for confrontation draws neared.

The people of Kutcher are more prepared than they were a season prior, a solid fighting force armed with tactics and weaponry. Many of their instruments are primitive, most of them do not wear armour, and their training of a single season (or a single month, for some) is minimal compared to the seasoned fighters of Ashton’s militia. Despite it all, though, moods feel high.

On a quiet morning, as most folk head back to the fields to begin sewing a new crop, one of Carmen’s rangers rides hastily into the small township on horseback. He looks exhausted, battled by the wild, parched and hungry. He has ridden for a day or longer without rest. His steed looks beaten, it’s hooves bloody. He brings word of movement to the East.

“They come. The Ashton folk, they’re coming. I spotted them on the road, packed with wagons and armed like soldiers. They march this way.”

The man’s arrival gives perhaps a day or two notice to the impending conflict. Carmen, having personally played a role in the training of Ultresni’s Hands, does not hide her concern. “We are not ready for this fight, but time has run out.”

How will the Ashton militia be met?

>> We will fortify Kutcher, garrison our fighters within the palisade, and prepare to bide our time in safety.

>> We will march half our forces to meet them in the field, ambushing them if possible. The rest will remain here to ensure the town is safe.

You have a point but I at least feel that all our plans for guerrilla fighting depended on Ultresni's Hand having the time and chance to fall back to Kutcher in case of trouble. The rider is given food and water as Jonas and his counsel begin to plan their response to this threat. It all came as expected – the Magistrate was coming for the land tax now that the Winter had passed, and the time had come to put the training of Ultresni’s Hand to the test.

Given supplies, tactics and numbers, it would only make sense to launch a counterattack and meet the aggressors in the field. The faithful knew the land, they had the element of surprise, and all they’d learned over the past season was about secrecy, stealth and surprise. If they could force the Magistrate’s men to double-back or rethink their approach, that would buy Kutcher long enough to fortify further.

As the faithful began to gather, arming themselves with axe and spear and bow, all eyes moved to Jonas for guidance. Throughout their training, none had yet been elected as leader of the Hand. There were those who excelled in their combat lessons, and those who had respect from their peers for their role in town, but none had taken the mantle of leadership of the rabble just yet.

In the field, Carmen and her rangers had shown, a force would rely heavily on the guidance of a single, solid leader who could mobilise the group as one.

While there are a couple of unproven choices part of the Hand already - Hargin, an old farmer with a foul mouth and a natural ability to swing a blade; and Pheon, a young woman who very early showed her charm with a bow and her quick wit - the circle of trusted and well-known advisors is still small to pick from.

>> Jonas will lead the Hand, with sword in hand and the word of Ultresni guiding him.

>> Gerard will lead the Hand, with a soldier’s ferocity and stoicism.

>> Hans will lead the Hand, with a bow in hand and a silver tongue to guide the troops.

>> Hargin will lead the Hand, through fear and bloodlust if nothing else.

>> Pheon will lead the Hands, with range and precision.

>> The fighters will pick a leader from their own ranks.

“You’ve been with me since the start and, without protest and always with dignity, you’ve kept us all safe. You’ve kept me safe. Now I ask you for this thing, without anything more to offer in return, and I only hope…”

Gerard interjected without emotion, without any kind of arrogance, nor bravado. He was as he had always been – simple, honest, to the point. He spoke in facts, not in dramatic prose.

“I will lead us to victory in whatever form it takes, friend.”

There came a short silence between Jonas – leader of the pilgrims, faithful acolyte of Ultresni – and Gerard – loyal sword-brother, soldier and servant. Around them, Carmen and her rangers prepared Ultresni’s Hands for the journey east, to confront their foe in the field. Bows were strung, swords and axes and spears distributed, and those few lucky enough soon bore boiled leather and sets of dull chainmail.

Kutcher and her people, followers of Ultresni, were marching toward their first conflict. As the troupe departed, many watched on with nervous looks of doubt, fear, anxiety. Jonas spared them his emotions, cold-faced and stoic, very much aware of the watershed moment he had led these faithfuls to. Most of all, after a year on the frontier together and many more prior to that, he watched on with both admiration and sorrow for his faithful servant, Gerard. Was the folly of Kutcher about the unravel? Were these folk marching to demise?

Time would tell.
>>
The rest of that day, and much of the night, Gerard led Ultresni’s Hand and their ranger comrades toward the East. The news of Ashton’s delegation had inferred the militia were travelling well in the open, steering clear of the rocky hills to the South.

Come morning the day after, Gerard awoke his people – men, women and youths – as the sun rose. They ate little, spoke even less, all keeping weapons close as the morning’s silence bore through to their bones. The march East continued, keen eyes always searching for the enemy, and Carmen’s loyalists ranged ahead in the hopes of spotting the foe before they could spot the pilgrim rabble.

By midday, with clouds forming overhead, the scouts returned with intelligence – the militia were ahead, marching right this way, and their numbers looked even more menacing than originally thought.

“They have soldiers on horseback, front and back. The men in the main column are all on foot, so the whole thing is slow. They’re well equipped, though – chain armour, good steel. The wagons keep them slow – I assume that’s what they plan to cart away your gold with… and we didn’t see any archers or skirmishers, though we didn’t get too close.”

The scouts also confirm that the small column is picking the path of least resistance from what they can tell, probably for the sake of the wagons, and are zig zagging over the rougher terrain. They’re headed straight for a small decline where, just maybe, an ambush could be planned out. The rise on either side is small, only ten or so feet, but there is a spotting of foliage in the area which could help hide some of our forces.

Most trembling, the faithful look on to Gerard for his orders.

Your people are split by weapon type – spear, axe, sword, bow and the rangers

>> We’ve spotted the enemy and we know when the open field has bested us – back to Kutcher, where we can fight from the safety of the palisade!

>> We meet them head on in ranks – bows behind spears behind swords and axes. We’ll rain arrows down on them as they approach and hold fast until their depleted forces clash with us or flee!

>> We’ll double-time it to the ambush site, archers propped up on high ground and the rest of our forces ready to intercept them from both sides!

>> We make for the ambush site and coax them forward, hiding half our forces to pincer them from behind once we’ve engaged!

>> We lay low with whatever cover possible, then strike them at full force from behind once they have passed us by!

Is generally not a good idea to attack (or pincer) a bigger force from behind, we would cut out their retreat path, and it would turn in a fight to the death. If we attack from the sides, we will let them have a path to retreat, that way they might prefer to run rather than to fight, and we will pick them out while they run, considering they have heavier armors and we have the rangers on our side, they wont be able to outrun us to Ashton, we will kill them while they retreat.

Without hesitation, Gerard began deployment – having a chance to lay an ambush was beyond his most outlandish hopes, a chance they couldn’t pass up. With weapons prepared, the small regiment moved on, full march, hoping to beat their opponents to the location the scouts had spotted.

Soon enough Ultresni’s Hands are in place, split up into six groups, each with their specific purpose. Gerard himself joined the few who were armed with chain armour and iron swords – the vanguard, as it turned out – and laid low against the foliage that surrounded a small thicket of trees.

Ahead was a very slight decline, a miniature valley that offered a narrow by relatively flat approach for the Ashton militia’s wagons. As expected, the marching soldiers were upon it soon enough, moving as slow as expected and without any visible care for their surroundings.

Pilgrims with bows laid flat on the slopes, waiting for the signal to rain down on their opponents. The rangers, with Carmen leading them, setup at the rear to offer support should any of the militia scale the slopes. If not, the rangers were prepared to charge into the back of the force once the attack was well underway.

On either side of the opening to the small, natural alley were the rest of the forces, keeping as low and hidden as possible in small thickets of trees. Armed with swords and axes, and even stone spears, the majority of the Kutcher forces laid in wait. Their position wasn’t ideal – most laying flat on the ground to avoid being spotted, they were sure to be at a disadvantage should the militia spot them before the ambush was sprung.

Soon, with his cheek against the soft dirt and the overhead sun blotted out, Gerard could hear the incoming rhythm of hoof falls. With the sound came the gentle vibration through the earth, like the beat of a drum, and eventually the distant conversation of an unaware militia several weeks into a long march.

If we cannot spot the leader, or if they're not part of the cavalry units, we should then focus on eliminating the unit in the rear. We have fewer men to prevent a cavalry charge against our archers there, it seems.

I concur, first make the archers and the rangers focus on the horses in the back, that will make the rest of their troops turn around, then our melee forces will jump on the horses in the front.
Our archers should be wary of any melee troops closing ino them, specially the ones in the smaller slope, they should be ready to retrat and harass them at every opportunity with the help of the rangers (whose primarly focus should be finishing off any remaining cavalry troop).
Once the cavalry is dead we can safely safely retreat if our melee troops are at a disvantage, prioritize our safety rather than killing the most of them, they are very far from Ashton, we can kill them slowly until they surrender.

Fist have the archers attack the horses in the back. Once they have the enemies attention have the spearmen and swordsmen attack the horses in the front. Once all the horses in the back are dealt with have the melee fighters fall back while the archers deal with any surviving horses in the front. The axemen and rangers are to remain hidden unless the enemy attacks the archers

Archers = 4
Spears and Axes = 3
Gerards Swords = 9
Rangers = 6

Bloodshed erupted all around as Gerard signalled the assault, pilgrims armed with crude weapons charging from the undergrowth toward their enemies. What followed close behind was carnage, unmitigated by planning and only hampered by the small fighting force’s infantile training and experience in the field. Thankfully, for those of Kutcher, their opponent looked bigger and badder than they actually were – the surprise attack caught them off guard and there was no sign of any combined counter offensive, just individual scrambles.

The ambush of the front guard, a handful of riders who were very deep in conversation when Gerard gave the order, was a complete success. The riders now look at breaking point, with swords before them and sharp spears attacking their flanks. They never had a chance to use their speed or shock to charge the pilgrims and now look fearful of defeat, clearly not well trained on horseback.

The remainder of the front forces formed a line that punched into the axe wielders of Ultresni’s Hand, quickly overpowering the small group with superior numbers. Many have already fallen and they also look close to breaking.

The initial volley of arrows caused havoc, if nothing else – as the militia tried to assess what was happening, a rain of timber and stone came down from above, piercing some and terrifying others. The shots were rarely true, though, and very few fell from that first barrage. The archers continued firing at will, slowly edging away as two counter-attacks formed up to take them on. As it stands, those on the northern ridge are looking to break any moment, faced with overwhelming odds and with little to defend themselves than some stone axes they haven’t been training with.

The counter to the Southern archers was caught, though, as the Rangers broke from cover and charged into the flank of a body of sword-wielding militiamen, unloading a barrage of arrows on them before breaking into their ranks with swords drawn. This small part of the conflict, you’re sure, will be won.

Our Archers in the northern ridge should run towards our spearmen and begin to shot only after they are safe.
The spearmen should go to try to intercept the calvary attacking our archers, as they will have the weapon advantage there.
Gerard should finish off the horse riders, if he finishes them quickly enough he should try to help our axe wielders distract the enemy troops so they dont go for our archers.
Our axe wielders should retreat for now, if they can make our enemies follow them instead of our archers the better
Our archers in the southern ridge should attack the militias that are fighting our axe wielders.
And the rangers should go to help them after they deal with the troops they are currently fighting.

I think it would be best to avoid the two joined infantry units while focusing on our original plan to take out the remaining cavalry and then quickly bail.

Archer Unit A retreats deeper into the woods, harassing the cavalry. Hopefully the difficult terrain will prevent a fully effective charge on them. B and C continue going all out against the remaining cavalry (B can advance as necessary to maintain a safe distance from the two infantry units.

Infantry unit D should retreat up the hill towards Archers A, to possibly intercept a cavalry charge and/or prevent the Archers from getting cut-off by the enemy infantry to the South. Infantry unit E instead should slowly retreat further South-West. It should aim to do one of the following:
A) Goad or split up the two enemy infantry units to chase after it, in which case they should continue maintaining distance and drawing them away from the battle without fully engaging.
B) Charge into the enemy infantry's rear should they attack the D Spearmen.
C) Charge into the enemy infantry's rear should try and attack our B Archers.

Once the enemy cavalry is down, we should quickly switch to Hit and Run tactics to outmaneuver the enemy heavy infantry.

Archers = 3
Spears = 3
Gerards Swords = 10
Rangers = 10

Screams of panic and gruesome pain spread across the small battlefield as chaos erupted all around, both sides desperately trying to grasp the tactical advantage. The cavalry originally at the rear of the Ashton column continued forward, picking their footing carefully, closing on a handful of Ultresni’s archers who were beginning to lose their advantage, though continued firing arrows as they could.

The infantry by the rear who had been following their mounted comrades were soon engaged in combat by Carmen and her lot, the rangers having disposed of one group of militiamen. Their losses were few, still supported by a rain of arrows from the second group of archers from Kutcher, and their was tangible fear and uncertainty on the faces of the foot soldiers as the wild folk charged them.

At the forefront of the fighting the contingent of axe-wielding faithfuls was no more, overwhelmed by superior number and war-gear. Many soon lay dead in the grass, bloodied and without grace, as the militia groups wasted no time closing the distance on both the Kutcher archers and Gerard’s small band of swordsmen.

Both groups of archers now teeter on breaking point, each flanked or charged by cavalry, even with the closing support of friendly spears in the north.

As swiftly as it had come, the battle was soon at and end. The cavalry were routed, facing a sharp line of flint spears and a rain of arrows. Those on foot soon succumbed to Gerard and his comrades, all fighting ferociously to turn the tide of battle.

The other batch of Kutcher archers weren’t so lucky, breaking as they were rushed from behind by militiamen. Blood was spilled and most retreated, diving from the incline or fleeing to the East. The militia, now facing a recoiling group of wild rangers, took this last grasp of victory and turned tail to make their retreat.

With the militia either slaughtered on the field, laying wounded and dying, or routed entirely, the battle was won. Even as the wounded started to be treated, cheers of excited (and almost bewildered) victory rose up from Ultresni’s Hands. Slurs and insults and roars of justice were the last thing the few remaining militiamen heard as they fled into the distance, slowly curving toward the East. Toward Ashton.

Assessing the killed and wounded, and calming those who were still on edge from the conflict, Gerard tool tally of their situation. Victorious, yes, but badly beaten nonetheless. From his count it was clear that at least fifteen of the faithful were killed, many more badly wounded.

The rest of that afternoon was spent…

“They are your quarry now. Hunt them as you please – we will remain until sundown to tend to the wounded, then return to Kutcher with or without you.” The words are not aggressive or stern, just matter of fact. Carmen understood, promptly assembling the remaining rangers (only two fell during the battle) and heading off to the East. Should the remnants of the militia halt for rest, or to regroup, they would surely be caught.

Gerard then assembled his people and set up work bands – some to run inventory of the loot (steel swords and armour), some to rally the horses, and some to investigate the wagons themselves. Alas the small caravan was only transporting the food the militia would need for their journey. Presumably, the extra capacity was to cart off whatever valuables the pilgrims were able to forfeit as their taxes.

From the aftermath of the battle the group gathered:

11 horses
6 wagons
17 steel swords
5 shields
17 sets of chainmail

The wounded were also seen to – some damage was simply flesh, some was more serious. Throughout the afternoon, several more pilgrims passed away from their wounds, though most were stabilised and could be escorted back to town in relative comfort using the wagons.

By sunset, Carmen and her rangers returned back – they had minimal success, catching a few wounded militiamen who were left for dead by their comrades, but ultimately the routing forces had escaped and were no doubt headed to Ashton.

All said and done, Gerard returned to Kutcher the following day with his faithful band behind him. The group returned with high spirits and tales of victory, though a grim funerary procession was also held for the seventeen Hands who passed away during the conflict.

The night after their return, Jonas and Carmen spoke long into the evening about the future of bond – the ranger agreed to stay put for the immediate future, to see what retaliation Ashton might throw their way.

>>
>>4030349
>> Work on another field

>> We should travel to the mining town and work on relations with them. If we get in good with them we might consider setting up a mine of our own but there is need to risk antagonizing them as well as Kutcher
>>
>>4030349
>Build a watchtower
We can use smoke signals to get across basic messages such as "threat approaching, be on guard" or something. Maybe I'm paranoid, but I have a feeling we're not free and clear just yet.
>Preach to Medris
Morale's high after we just had the victory, so maybe people will be more willing to convert. We could certainly use the extra people to make up for our losses.

Also, at some point we should consider preaching to the wild folk. If we form an alliance, it would only make sense to help them see Ultresni's Truth. Now is probably too soon though. They could take it the wrong way
>>
>>4030349
Time to focus on securing ourselves some iron, be it by trade or mining.
> Work on another field
>Question Carmen as to whether her people know of any other sites of iron ore, or other metals, to the East or the South.
>Alternatively, send scouts to the still unexplored hills Across the river (4 tiles West)
I'd first rather see if there's any alternative, safer mining spots that aren't so close to Medris before resorting to diplomacy/antagonizing them.
>>
>>4030349
The colour in the southern tiles, what it's supposed to represent, stone or ash?
>>
>>4030372
I second this. But isnt anyone curious what is that on the SW behind the forest where the river seems to end? I would rather send the scouts there just to know what exactly is and even maybe have the chance of finding iron ore or something useful.
>>
>>4030363
The watchtower is uselful but I think for now the rangers are our eyes outside Kutcher. We can leave that for later.
>>
>>4030422
Mountains, I'd assume.
>>
>>4030372
I support this. If Carmen can help us expand our map that would be great, as much information on the land she can give us helps, but the priority are ores.
I agree that we should start getting iron, if we manage to get a steady supply the better.
The mountains south might be a great source of ore if we find some way to navigate the river. But right now our craftmanship is not enough to make ships.
We must find a way to improve our craftmanship, not only by getting better minerals, but better craftmen too.
>>
>>4030349
Hold archery contests at the start of spring. Too re-polish our skill after winter. Reward the first kill of the spring and, hit the bulls-eye.

Set up more fish trap, we need better food, than grains, too heal.
>>
>>4030506
We should try getting some cows, pigs and maybe rabbits as wel
>>
>>4030513
Our chickens are pretty low labor. We can crush fish bones and feed it too them for more eggs. We could make a run for fresh hens and chicks. Cows are good but, pigs are a luxury if we are expecting retaliation. Collecting hey is easy and if we plant local perennials. We won't have to focus as much on tending to fields. I don't know if those wild dogs are still around but, if we can tame them they could be a good alarms. Expecting an attack we could build another wall around our wall.

Taking advantage of having their wisdom and knowledge present, Jonas and his counsel spend many days working over their crude mappings of the land with Carmen and her rangers. These wilder folk know the lands well, at least those around Ashton, and are able to point out a few things missing. Importantly, they’re wary of a third frontier settlement in these parts – a fishing village called Tessin, just South of Ashton. They also fill in the gaps to the south, where the river escapes up into the mountains.

When asked about ore, or other major resources, the rangers’ knowledge falls a little short. They are not stupid people, but their lives for many generations have been simple. They have little interest in ore and metals, especially when cultivating such would require them to lay down some of their nomadic ways. No, they’ve instead relied on taking what they need from Ashton, thus aren’t able to give you much resource direction other than noting that the forests to the South are teeming with life.

The month is also spent assembling, and then sowing, a new crop field on the outskirts of Kutcher. More seeds are set into the fertile ground and this years’ harvest is beginning to look even more bountiful than the last. There are even concerns that a second granary may be needed before too long – the pilgrims are producing farm more food than they need given their population.

Finally, an expedition is sent to Medris this month as the weather begins to warm up. Led by Hans, a small band of faithfuls make the Northern march to the industry town, hoping to subtly spread the word of their resistance to Ashton and the good faith of Ultresni. As expected, they do not return this month.

A young boy came of age this month.

This will be good to do before winter starts

>Develop our faith to promote the creation of large families
We are producing a lot of food and there is ample room to grow - women should focus on having kids

That certainly saved us a lot of time exploring, although not quite the "there's gold in these hills here" we were hoping for. It'd be good to keep sending scouts out South when we can afford to to investigate.

>Upgrading to stone houses
It's not that pressing, but I'll support this for the time being unless someone has a better suggestion.
>Trade our surplus food with Medris in return for iron.
I know we can't rely much on support or long-term friendliness from the militaristic Medris, but now that we finally have some surplus to barter away I think it'd do good to try and open trade between us.

Upgrade our simple Timber houses in centralized longhouses with a focus on greater insulation and the fact that many living together will bring greater warmth during the winter.

As Spring went by the residents of Kutcher went about upgrading their homes – one by one, stone by stone, they reinforced the timber structures that had served them well for their first year. Now, sturdier and warmer, the homes of the pilgrims are true sanctuaries to protect them from the elements.

That month, also, Jonas was regularly preaching on the sabbath of Ultresni’s true vision of large, healthy families. “It is of the Goddess’ eye that folk should bond, marry, and produce many children to see them through to the end of their days.” People have begun to take this message to heart now that Kutcher has started to feel like a real, permanent home for them all.

As the month came to a close, Hans and his envoy returned home. The group which had left as 8 in total now returned as twenty six, an eager-to-please Hans leading the way as he describe the journey to anyone who would listen. His tale was two-fold, all good news, and there was a small celebration that night to welcome the newcomers.

Firstly, Medris was a township of faithless – no churches or shrines, no Magistrate of faith, no sabbath or rituals. There were many downtrodden, too poor to keep a roof over their heads and too far removed from society to get a job in the camps. Faithful souls, looking for guidance. Hans delivered this to them.

Secondly, after rumours spread around the bustling town of Kutcher’s military incident with the neighbours of Ashton, Hans and his party were finally granted a session with the Magistrate, Eric O’Garvn. As Hans tells it, the Magistrate wasn’t willing to give up any clout, but did allude to something of a compliment in relation to the skirmish with Ashton. After an evening of wine and simple foods, Hans was able to secure an agreement with O’Garvn – surplus food and any cattle Kutcher could provide in return for iron or iron weapons, should Kutcher not wish to forge its own.

Hans is keen to get an agreement from Jonas and his counsel, to return to Medris with haste to setup some formal document.

Eighteen migrants came to Kutcher this month, and two youths came of age.

A watermill would be nice to mill grain. Also, it would be nice to get some sheep at some point and start making clothing. The watermill could help with that if we ever get some.

We can figure out what Tessin has to offer us and if we can make any deals. We could also make some converts, which would be nice.

By Spring’s end, diplomatic relations were being cultivated with Medris. Hans was excitedly deployed once more, taking a larger band of followers with him this time, along with two wagons of non-perishable food. The plan was to trade for ore the pilgrims could use to forge weapons and tools of their own design.

The rest of the township spent the month constructing a new brewery. Only a few of the citizens had any experience with brewing, though it was enough knowledge to inform the construction of the building and the crafting of some crude barrels and mixing vats. Come Summer, a handful of men and young boys have committed to getting a brew of ale prepared before the mid-Summer zenith of the sun.

The herd of deer to the South is starting to look barren. For a season or two, the hunters will leave it alone.

There has still be no liaison with Ashton since the early-Spring skirmish.

Two youths came of age this month.

I though the thread had about died, but it looks like we’ll go another season!

The beginning of Summer is peaceful in Kutcher, though wariness of neighbours to the North East was always close to mind for the pilgrims. Many spent their days travelling to a site just East of town, one that Carmen and Jonas had both agreed on as an ideal spot for a sentry tower. The tower is simple – timber, mostly, with enough shelter to sleep and stay dry, as well as some space to hitch a few horses. The first sentries were placed there soon after, rotating on weekly shifts.

Presumably, should Ashton or any other Eastern force come knocking, the small sentry outpost will be able to give Kutcher a day or two’s notice.

Throughout the month, on warmer nights when folk gathered around the small town square for a meal and some homebrewed ale, Jonas and some of his oldest counsel began to speak about the vices of alcohol and its impact on the community. It was decided, and very much accepted by folk (other than a few grumpy young children) that nobody who had lived less than fourteen Summers would be allowed to indulge in the newfound past-time of dinking ale. The exception, of course, being Sabbath – on the holiest of days, all were allowed a single drink, but only after prayer and morning worship.

By the end of the month Hans and his small band of traders arrived – their wagons, once filled with dried fish and grain, were now stocked with leather-wrapped iron ore. The ore looks good, as promised and as hoped, and a number of those who helped construct the forge are sure they will be able to fire it into something useful.

Hans is keen to uphold ongoing trade with Medris, adamant that he is making diplomatic ties there with many of the higher ranked officers in the military garrison that runs the place. He offers to continue a back and forth, food for iron route, however is unsure if Kutcher is producing enough food for that just yet.

To date, the horses weren't used for much, though I assumed they were ridden whenever traders or explorers left town.

The hot, mid-Summer days are spent working the forge and keeping the regular economics of Kutcher afloat – stone is hauled back to town, trees are felled, and the forge burns hot. Those with the required skills spend the month working on new spears – iron tipped spears, and longer than those previously – while others begin to develop their riding skills.

The need for a mounted force protecting the town, Gerard said, was vital. They had seen the enemy and now knew what they would face should Ashton ever come marching again.

There was much trepidation around town this month, many starting to feel comfortable enough to question Ashton and just when the pilgrims would hear from Magistrate Griffiths again. No doubt word of the skirmish had reached the Eastern town, and no doubt the militia there was more powerful than a few dozen swordsmen that Ultresni’s Hand had defeated in the field.

When, then, would the second round come?

By the month’s end you have a handful of shaky riders – they aren’t experts, but they can keep the beats in check and sometimes even balance a spear with one hand as they grasp the reigns. The beginnings of a Kutcher cavalry.

What will this new regiment of soldiers be called?

The final days of Summer are spent building a suitable home for the horse herd of Kutcher. Since the pilgrimage first began, the local horse population had been well maintained. Now, with somewhere to better care for the beasts, the town will be able to keep the population far more healthy and stable, and perhaps even begin getting it to grow. Some who have volunteered to care for the beasts have expressed an interest in how the animals could become a valuable trade good, depending on how some of the other frontier towns are equipped.

Also this month, Hans has departed to work his magic in Tessin. The small township was unknown to Jonas and his people, though Carmen’s rangers soon admitted that they did know of its existence, though had never interacted with the folk there. Hans’ mission is to meet with those in charge, let them know of Kutcher’s existence, and hopefully trade for some cattle or sheep. With them the diplomats take a handful of horses and a few wagons full of fish, berries and grain.

While in town, Hans will also be spreading the good word of Ultresni.

The small expedition was yet to return by the time Harvest began.

Three youths came of age this month.

The first days of Harvest are glorious, the people of Kutcher enjoying a ripe yield from their fields and a welcome change to the weather as cool breezes blow in from the East. Many set about working with Jonas to construct a new barracks in town, a place where those faithful who have chosen to fight can hone their skills and store their weapons.

The Hand and Riders also set about training with one another, focussing on mounted combat and the use of the newly forged iron spears. The fighting force, while significantly reduced in size since the skirmish with Ashton’s militia, is looking fitter by the day. Most of the riders are now competent in the saddle and Gerard has begun leading them into the mock fights.

Hans and his traders returned as the month wore on, bearing a dozen heads of cattle and news from afar. Tessin, it seems, is a very small township only founded in the last few years. Its main purpose is to fish the river and cultivate the fertile lands around it, though recently it has begun working on a fledgling pottery industry as the riverbanks there are lined with easily accessible clay.

The Magistrate is a lowly man, appointed out of luck (or perhaps misfortune, as some might call the job ceremonial) rather than gold and connections. Magistrate Hammond is an older gentlemen, almost disarmingly welcoming to the trade envoy, and was more than happy to help facilitate trade between the two towns. Their own crops are still struggling to get into rotation so the fruit and grain was well worth the herd of cattle he had some of his people hand over.

Hans is adamant that there is a positive relationship to be had with Hammond, though the small township probably doesn’t have a whole lot to offer just yet.

Two youths came of age this month.

Expand the brewery, trade in ale will surely fetch good coin.

Send an expedition down north to the hills to prospect for resources.
>>
>>4038096
Correction: South
>>
>>4038067
>>4038096
We need more wheat fields before we can expand our brewing I think, I’ll back the other action though

>Build a dedicated cattle farm to facilitate milking, breeding and upkeep

>Send an expedition down south to the hills to prospect for resources.

@OP, how are resources divided out in the town? Are there local merchants buying and selling goods, or is it communal eating and sharing of goods?
>>
>>4038181
Everything is shared at the moment - people have daily chores in cooking, cleaning, caring for the children, chopping wood, gathering stone, hunting, fishing, etc. But it's all shared evenly, as are the spoils.

The population will need to advance a fair way before an economy could kick off within the town.
>>
Do we have enough houses for everyone?
>>
>>4038189
Okay, thanks for clarifying.

Is bread currently being baked communally, or are we not making bread with our milled wheat?

Also, have any local women shown an interest in either Jonas or Gerald? Our religion places importance on families...yet neither of our leaders have one.
>>
>>4038181
I support the second action.
For the first i rather build a moat, there is no need to make it very deep, a meter or so will suffice as it wont let them see the bottom, which we can fill with sharpened stakes.

If we find anything on those hills we should build some blueprints in Medris to make a better dock and some ships, or hire an experienced craftman or architect.
We need siege weapons like a catapults or trebuchets if we want to defend ourselves against a bigger force.
>>
>>4038653
We have no immediate need for defence, whereas we can gain a turn of cattle breeding with a dedicated farm.

Happy to build a moat / improved docks later though. We probably need a dedicated carpenter before we can build anything but a raft though
>>
>>4038195
Yes, quantity of houses will be updated automatically as the population grows, unless there is a sudden boom. Special focus needs to be given only when homes need to be upgraded, say from stone and timber to brick.

>>4038263
Yes to bread.

There has been no specific interest to date, both Jonas and Gerard are both very busy with civil affairs most of the time. There are doubtless opportunities in town to spark up a relationship, though none have taken the step in engaging either of the leaders.

>>4038096
>>4038181
>>4038653

Exploration to the south seems unanimous.

Rolling for the civil action: either expanding the brewery (1), building more fields (2), or building a moat (3)
>>
Rolled 1 (1d3)

>>4038866
The actual roll...
>>
>>4038866
>>4038868

As we come to late Harvest, the brewery will be expanded out and an expedition will be sent to explore the south.

I think I'll close off this thread and likely start Chapter 3 early next week, hopefully with a solid binge to kick it off. Unfortuantely I can't much help how infrequent the usual updates are.

I've archived and will announce the next thread on the twitter.
