You are Ushi Walker and also Loanstar, the Exchange Hero.
The half-japanese/half-american wielder of the mighty quirk “Everything is Bigger in Texas", one of U.A. High's first year students, cook extraordinaire and living pressure cooker.

"Ah gotta go deal with mah own internship now, but we can talk 'bout meetin' for a run when we go back to U.A!" You blurt out, pointing at the room's door over your shoulder. "Sounds good!?"

The three boys in the hospital room look at you with different levels of concern.

>"Oh, of course!" Iida quickly answers, surprised, yet not displeased. "."

While Shoto looks slightly worried about you, a wonder considering how little emoting he does, Iida still looks rather surprised, but a certain pull at the corner of his mouth that tells you he's not all too unhappy with your belated acceptance of his offer.

Deku's expression is more of intrigue. While you hope that he doesn't figure it out, you are kind of glad that he tries.

"Ya sure Ah can't have some of that workout advice?" You ask the green haired boy, half prodding for actual advice and to distract him for a second.

>"Uh? Oh… No, not really." He answers, reaching to scratch the back of his neck, but being stopped by his bandages. "But I could see if I can put something together for you?"

"That'd be great, sugah." You tell him, quickly tapping the bento boxes, sporks and napkins, shrinking it all with a small cracking sound and a poof of vapor and shoving it nigh-instantly into one of the bags. "'ave a nice recovery!"

It's not that you don't want to be with them…
Okay, maybe you don't want to be with them right now.

This 'Burnin'' gal sent something stupid over text and you were dumb enough to ask Shoto about it in front of the other boys. You can't even blame him for answering the question as it was!

'Something more'? 'Can't bring yourself to take it'? What the heck was that woman smoking?

Whatever it was, you need to unscramble your brain and do it away from your heterochromatic pal, preferably with a gal pal.

Right before you leave though, you take out your phone and a take a pic with flash of the room, taking care of keeping your face in the corner and most of the frame for the boys recovering from their fight with the murderous villain.

You then stare at the pic for a second, noticing how Deku seems to be holding his gown down with alarm on his face. You don't see anything else-

"Oh. Y'all ain't wearin' nothin' else, are ya?" You ask, rhetorically.

>"Our costumes were bloody messes and our mentors did not bring anything this morning." Shoto explains.

"..." Saying a poignant bit of nothing, you open the door, step out and close it behind you.

Then you gasp.

You have to take the train back to Yokkaichi to make the best of the last days of your internship, but that will take some time.

More than enough to talk with someone, if they have time for you.

You stomp your way through western Tokyo, head low, horns first.

Not that you want to gore anyone, but you aren't in the mood to deal with anyone's crap yet.

Having gotten away from that room before doing anything dumb, there's nothing you should be beating yourself over about…

What if you did something dumb while leaving?

Sighing, you just make your way to the train station, trying to get your head out of that mindspace.

Even as you finally take a seat in the woman's car on the train, on your way to Yokkaichi, you can't keep yourself from thinking about not-thinking about what happened there…

In the end, you decide to kill two birds with one stone and distract yourself by reading the mess that must be the Class 1-A chatroom.

Once you tap into it, the overt and amusing chaos you were hoping for hits you in full force.

You can't help but smile at the mix of different styles shown on your screen, even if you aren't quite in on what's going.

>"Just saying that it was cool, nothing more!" Kaminari sent some time ago.

>"There's nothing admirable about it, not the imagery, nor it's acts!" Momo replied.

>"C'mon, you gotta admit the guy had some style!" Mina added to the conversation, following it up with a pink thinking emoji. "Grindhouse villain kinda style, but it made an impression!"

>"I'm glad he's behind bars now." Koda comments, and you somehow can feel his shyness through your screen.

>"Our own classmates were injured by this guy!" Uraraka interjected. "Can we please talk about something else?"

>"Thank you!" Kyoka replies, adding an angry emoji. "Dude was good talking shit and stabbing better people. Just forget about that shithead, we don't need the bunch becoming true crime fans."

You scroll down a bit more, feeling a bit lost, yet not entirely sure why.

Then it hits you.

The next message is from Uraraka, when it normally would be Iida's, chastising Kyoka for her language.

"Huh." You let out at that realization.

Scrolling back up, right after the worries of what the hell happened with Deku, his GPS location and the boy's run in with The Hero Killer.

>"Guys, check this out." Kaminari has posted, along with a gray square you recognize was once a video, now taken down.

>"Why are people so desperate to know his life?" Momo asked, right after.

>"Well, his actions make some sort of sense with the context?" The blonde replied.

>"Dude had conviction, but got it all wrong." Commented Kirishima. "That's what makes us heroes and him a villain! It's not just about punishing criminals, but about making the world a safer place!"

>"Who are you and how did you get Eiji's phone?" Mina then asked. "Nah, really, what was that?"

>"It's what Fourth Kind likes to talk about!" Kirishima answered.

You chuckle at that. You miss them all.

Scrolling back down to recent conversation, you read what Uraraka had written.

>"I called them at the hospital, seems they will be back on their feet for classes!" It said.
>>
>"And the hospital just let you talk with them?" Kyoka asked for some reason.

It was ridiculously easy to just walk up to them in their rooms!

>"...Or did you call someone???" Mina prodded.

>"I just called Deku because he sent the message we all saw!" Ochaco explained.

>"SHUT THE FUCK UP ALREADY!!!" The ever calm Bakugo said, the first text of him you've seen.

>What do you do?

>[Keep it lighthearted! "Howdy! How's everyone doing?"]
>[That video might be important, or at least interesting. "Anyone can send me a link that works for that Hero Killer video? Wanna see what's the fuss all about."]

Chuckling at Bakugo's anger, you just go on with the flow, joining into the talk about the boys and how they were after their fight.

"I visited them!" You send before starting to upload the picture.

>"What?" Uraraka sends, nigh instantly. "I called as early as it was allowed…"

Then the pic loads, the thumbnail quickly occupying half the screen, showing a preview of your face and the boys behind you.

"They’ve been through a lot but you know they’re coming outta this stronger. Edgeshot let me take the time to check in on them on person." You add. "They seemed very happy to see me!"

You then finish your text with a smiley emoji.

>"I can't see under your neck, did you wear a nurse outfit?" Mineta then sends.

>"Do you want to go to the hospital and find out?" Kyoka asks him.

>"Would I get a private visit too?" He fires back.

>"You gotta earn the costumes man!" Kaminari sends, instantly making it less annoying than when Mineta did.

>"Can't you behave for five minutes?" Momo pleads. "Can we please finish talking about what's important?"

>"So… What did you go for?" Uraraka asks. "I mean, you did something there?"

For half a second, it looks like the chat might stay on topic.

But not more than that.

>"Yeah, like how come her emoji has a hat!" Mina asks, sending one of her own pink ones.

With the train coming close to your stop, you prepare to put your thumbs into use and get a last text out.

The japanese railroad system is certainly impressive.

You don't know whether is your horns inbalance or just your body's empathetic response to your mix of curiosity and confusion.

"Oh, you know. Share a meal, talk and stuff with friends" You quickly type. "Why?"

>"Nothing." Uraraka immediately sends back. "Just wondering how come you took half a day off in the middle of your internship just because. Kinda weird."

As the train stops, you quickly pocket your phone and hop off to the platform, ready to head back to the tower and talk with Edgeshot about what you'll do tonight and the rest of the week…

Instead of doing that, however, you look for a nearby bench to sit on and continue your texting.

After noticing that the closest one is occupied by what you are pretty sure are four middle schoolers trying very hard to make a space for you, you make the decision to walk up to a wall and lean against that instead.

What to answer to that, though…

Why did you ask for that?

Why not?

You take a second to compress all your frustration of the day and put it aside for now, then get to typing.

"I just gave Iida and Deku some hot stewed meat, and Shoto got some cold noodles." You answer, typing as fast as your nimble fingers allow you, the clack of your nails hitting the glass sounding like a centuries old typewriter. "Good homemade food and some company to make them feel better while they are all cooped up in there, it's the least I could do for any of them."

Before she can send another text though, you send a small clarification.

"Would try to do the same for any* of my friends you guys." You send, remembering that it is a group chat after all.

>"Oh." Uraraka sends, followed by another short text. "That's nice."

Part of you hates this, you really wish you could see her face and reaction instead of just words. You add that to your growing ball of stress and try to carry on...

>"That means nurse Walker is still on the table?" Mineta sends, along with a rather tasteless winking emoji. "I've gotten some serious psychological damage while here."
>"Call it brain damage and I'll believe it." Kyoka replies, never late to try and mess with him.

"Reread the last text I sent." You type with what you think must be a devilish smirk. "That asterisk is for you. Kaminari is right you know, I might consider that if I, you know, liked you. You make it so girls don't even want to be in the same room with you."

>"Yeah, I know, nothing new." He replies. "I would accept pics too."

Reading that, you slam your finger on the lock screen button, convinced that you would have an aneurism before getting him to be a decent person over text.

At least it was somewhat cathartic to write that, you think as you walk up to Edgeshot's Agency's tower, entering the now familiar building.

You wave at the receptionist as you walk past her, going around the pillar and into the once secret elevator, looking at the antiquated display showing the floor numbers going up, you let your mind wander off your classmates and into your training.

There's not much time left in your internship but despite your best efforts to squeeze the most off the experience, you still feel like there's more you could do, that there's just so much more you could learn under his tutelage.

You are certain your senses are sharper than ever and you've learnt techniques that should allow you to end fights ever faster!

But there has to be more!

"That's all nice…" You mutter to yourself as the elevator reaches your floor, its doors opening and letting you walk out. "But there's gotta be more to do!"

It's just who you are. Working on improving yourself is one of the best ways to deal with stress you know of, the other being a scalding bath.

Not quite sure of what exactly you should do, you drop off your bag at the kitchen for later cleaning and make a beeline for your room, stopping at the doorway.

Inside is a now familiar sight, with Tin the tiny robot playing dominoes with your one-of-a-kind figurine, guiding your- her- its movement with its own clawed tail.

"Howdy Tin." You greet your mechanical friend as you enter, intent on getting changed into something that won't burst at the seams under stress.

>"Greetings mistress!" The tiny white robot replies with its childlike voice, abandoning its game to follow you around. "It's nice to see you again. Despite looking nigh identical, watching over the figurine doesn't bring the fulfilment that you do, mistress."

"Say what?" You absentmindedly let out as you try to decide what to wear. Just yoga pants or maybe sweatpants, and some good sports underwear would keep everything comfy and in place…

>"My main purpose is to keep you safe to the best of my ability." Tin tells you once more, following it up with the information you really wanted. "As expected, there's no replacing you mistress."

"Ah reckon that if there ever was to be sumthin' to replace me, it'd be this fella." You reply with a nod, taking a moment to pick up your figurine. "But there's only one Walker Ushi, accept no substitute!.. Oh. That's a good one."

You immediately scrap the idea of using a simple sports getup, instead snapping your costume case open and grinning.
In a flurry of inspiration, you don't mind the mess you are making, throwing your clothes off and putting on your lovely, if maybe too insulating, costume.

You can always do more things! You have learned most of what you can do with your quirk on your own! How could you not find a way to do what seems to be the simplest ninja trick!?

Thus, you run to the padded training room, half-cape fluttering behind you, your plastic self in your hand and with Tin's treads in hot pursuit.
>>
"Tin, sugar, start recordin' video." You tell it once inside the room, taking some care to not drive your spurs into the padding.

>"Doing so… now." Tin announces, following your movement with both of its red cameras.

You hold your figurine in front of you and place your free hand on your thigh, ready to start experimenting with your limits once again.

In an instant, you activate your quirk on both hands, subtracting mass from your own body and sending enough into the figurine to make it as big as you normally are.

"Show me the video!" You then demand of your helpful robot, who brings your phone to use as a display.

There's no difference in the before and after segments, other that the figurine's total lack of movement. It could easily pass as you for a second or two.

But that doesn't really matter all that much, what matters is that you can see it all happen on the video.

The white, wispy mist that envelops whatever you use your quirk on doesn't really cover the switcharoo as you hoped it would. It hides both changes, but you can easily make out a quickly expanding cloud and a quickly shrinking one instead of the consistent, larger one you wanted.

>"Is the result unsatisfactory? Is my camerawork lacking!?" Tin asks, it's pitch oddly shifting in the end there, but you just pat it on the head, between its antennae but away from the open hole in it.

"A tad 'nd nah." You tell it, growing back to size and grabbing the figurine, shrinking it down with your touch, paying attention to how the mist moves.

You aren't really know for being much of a thinker, but you are sure that's just because people notice other things about you before that.

Shrink down, grow up. Seeing what looks like your own body go through the process up close gives you more insight into not only what you are trying to do, but into your quirk itself.
When shrinking the figurine, the mist flows out of its surface, as if it was letting out smoke and burning from within. The mist envelopes the figurine in its entirety, then flows into your hand and is absorbed by your fingers.

When enlarging it, the mist flows from your fingers and surrounds it, disappearing inwards into the figurine's form.

You then take a moment to look at your hands, covered in fingerless gloves.
Unlike Uraraka's cute kitty pads, there's nothing but tough skin on yours. No biological mechanism you can see for your quirk.

It just works.

Thus, you go on to try something new, placing your hand on the figurine and reaching out with your quirk.

Normally, you'd compare it with a snake or a so called lasso, reaching fast and either pulling the mass and mist to take it for your own, or shoving the mass in, like a wood splitter wedge.

This time you take a different approach, reaching slowly and feeling the mist sizzle around your fingers…

Then you don't. You focus on that part of your quirk and stop it, halting the process.
>>
The wisp of mist lingers around your fingers, flowing sluggishly and starting to flatten itself against your skin, but you don't let it in.

...It starts to hurt. It physically hurts to do, feeling like you had stuck your fingers in the vacuum cleaner again, or a very localized drowning, your hand needing its mist.

You then relax and let the process continue, and the normal feeling starts returning to your hand as the mist enters your body.

"Ah just gotta hold mah breath." You then state, blinking a couple times.

>"For your own safety, mistress, I must recommend you continue breathing." Tin asserts, nodding with both head and tail.

"Record again!" You tell it, excited to try it out properly.

>"Recording!" The robot answers, mirroring your excitement.

You grab the figurine and try again, adding your special twist this time.

It feels like exhaling with empty lungs, but you can make the mist of the shrunken linger, letting you change places under your own natural smokescreen.
The video confirms it. It's slower than what you would have liked, but the cloud forms and then collapses without a trace of anything wonky happening.

You smile. That's the basics. All that's left is to practice, and you are great at that.

"Yer on stopwatch duty now, sugah!" You tell Tin, jogging in place in excitement. "Ah need to get this down to a fraction of a second!"

>"Sure thing!" Tin replies, its eagerness to help mixing with its childish voice for an adorable if somewhat confusing result.

You don't keep track of time, knowing little more than by the time the ninjas sneak up on you, it must have been a couple of hours.

>"Well, there goes one of the things I was planning to do." Edgeshot comments, sighing dramatically.

>"I prefer the traditional way." Johai adds, pulling a couple glass beads and showing them to you. "Smoke and glassdust bombs are as iconic as the kunai."

>What do you do?

2 named fighting moves, an outthink die, and a new quirk technique. I honestly think we're bumping into the limits of what we can plausibly learn in just a single week in relation to the other people in our class.
I'd functionally just want to spend the timeskip getting the things we've learned down into muscle memory and a decent proficiency. Like Ushi said, she wants to get the substitution technique to a fraction of a second

I'm really feeling the discipline and finesse route for Ushi. Her potential for collateral damage is ridiculous, so working on fine control first just makes sense for a career as a hero.

I am also amused by the thought of a bombastic cowgirl in a vibrant, bright costume who can move like friggin Batman.

I read that as piano drop. And not for nothing, she could totally carry one just to go full Loony Tunes.

A safe and an anvil too, why not?

Oh right, lethal force. Darn. She could also carry around effectively unlimited amounts of dynamite too.

In fact, any form of stored energy becomes pretty ridiculous in Ushi's hands. Be careful with compressed gases, though. Those might not safely scale, depending on the container.

Sun Fall

You look at the ninjas for a couple of seconds, waiting for your heart to drop back from your throat.

For a brief instant, you consider yelling at them for sneaking up on you, but then you remember that you being hard of hearing and focused on something had more to do with it than their intent to scare you…

And that they are ninjas sneaking around is like, their thing.

"Sorry for skippin' ahead sir." You tell the elder ninja instead, bowing down for a second. "And thanks again for lettin' me go see mah- my friends, sir. Whatever you have in store, I promise I'll do my best!"

>"Had I not let you visit them, you wouldn't have been able to focus." He replies with a sharp wave of his hand a small nod of his own. "And antsy teens are prone to bad decisions… Especially prone to bad decisions."

>"Some of us grow out of that earlier than others." Johai tries to add, but your mentor just rolls his eyes at his comment.

>"While expected, I regardless thank you for your commitment." The hero tells you. "And I hope you hold on to that resolve."

You tilt your head to the left, confused… But fairly excited still. Ninjas, man!

"What'd ya mean?" You ask him, holding your figurine close to you, worried a surprise exercise may break it.

>"Fun's over, kids. I 'can't put you in danger' anymore, so we'll be working on technique." He says, crossing his arms. He clearly doesn't like what he's saying either. "It should be nothing but iteration and reiteration from now on. Still excited for what's to come?"

You only need to give one glance to side, seeing the younger ninja nod and bow with no hesitation, following his lead and bowing as well.

"Yessir! Just one question!" You say, waiting for him to nod to continue. "So, what do Ah have to do to be a real ninja? A journeyman exam? Get a big black hat?"

It feels silly. Mostly because you are being silly, bobbing up and down on your heels as you wait for an answer.

>"...Never stop, and no matter how immensely tall is the hurdle, jump higher." He replies after a couple seconds, shocking you with a piercing stare.

>"I love this part." Johai mutters, sending a shiver down your spine.

>"The way of the ninja has changed for about a millenia." Edgeshot says, his voice full of conviction. "What started with the most dishonorable path a man could take in a war torn country, a life of murder, theft and thuggery has been lionized by the ages, legends and myth."

You nod, not sure of what to say, or if you should even interrupt.
>>
>"The blade in the dark, those who snuffed can both lights and lives became folk heroes, striking down corruption and evil instead, guardians of the common man." He continues without hesitation. "Jirokichi and Goemon both live in the country's heart as both heroes and outlaws, men who did what they knew was right instead of the daimyō's desires, shadows that undermined evil ploys unseen until their demises. They stand now as two of the three most important ninjas, whose legends are still told to this day, shaping the idea of the modern ninja."

Johai looks at you expectantly.

"What about the third?" You ask, knowing that it is what you are expected to do, even though you really want to say that you know it was Naruto[i/].

>"Chiyome, the Kunoichi." Edgeshot starts explaining, with a twinkle in his eyes that make you feel like he wanted to tell you anyway. "She who took in hundreds of wayward women and girls, widows and orphans. She took these victims of the constant civil wars and taught them how to pass unseen, how to act as shrine maidens and noblewomen alike and how to fight. They were victims no longer."

This time he doesn't wait for you to interject.

>"Anyone can run fast and murder for money, but if you ask me what you need to do to be a real ninja, this is my answer." He says, slowly blinking before staring straight into your eyes. "Be like the legends of old, a hero that appears out of nowhere to do the right thing, no matter how impossible it may look like, but knowing full well the risks in what you are doing. Can you do that?"

There it is again. The odd silence in which people expect you to say things and do it well. At least they know you somewhat by now.

>What do you do?

>[It's not the first time he has implied that. "Ain't that what you told me at the start? To mind the rules but not hesitate? Cuz Ah took that to heart already, sir! Ah can and will!"]

You don't even think about it. There's nothing to mull over, it's a foregone conclusion.

"Ain't that what you told me at the start? To mind the rules but not hesitate? Cuz Ah took that to heart already, sir! Ah can and will!" You tell him, ironically, without hesitation. "That thing ya-you said about the last ninja… That they were victims no more! That's pretty much what I want! For everyone!... Ma-myself too, really…"

Well, a little hesitation. It is a little personal, after all.

"A-Ah may not always know the risks, but if Ah'll can live up to that ideal bein' hero, a ninja like that, no matter how impossible the challenges Ah'd have to face!" You say, overwhelmed by emotion, taking a deep breath before continuing. "Well, Ah'd reckon' I'd be glad to call that my ninja way!"

>"Eraserhead was right, then." Your mentor then says, blindsiding you. "And he's going to hate it."

"...What?" You ask, a bit confused by the subject change.

>"...Who?" Johai asks at almost the same time. You don't blame him, your homeroom teacher embodies the antithesis of what you are taught at school you need to do to get in the public eye.

>"U.A. reached out to us all before sending you out for your internships." The hero explains with a lazy wave of his hand, tidying up his scarf with the other. "Your homeroom teacher wanted you to learn subtlety, but fully expected you to learn better ways to barge in."

"Ah… I'm confused?" You sort of ask, mostly stating the obvious. "I thought that was what I was supposed to do. To barge in and so what's right?"

>"No. Barging in is reckless and dangerous..." The ninja says, shaking his head.

He then crouches and looks at you straight in the eye.

Your emotions are roiling with your confusion and even your steely resolve feeling a tad brittle.

He, on the other hand, has a completely cool and serene look that reaches behind his eyes, as if he had either already figured what the world has in store for him, or...

You recall what you know of Edgeshot, the third fastest man in Japan, one of the fastest in the world, a master of his craft and beloved hero of Yokkaichi.

This is the man that trained a quirk some compared to a rubber band into a honed weapon able to break the sound barrier. He has spent his life doing the best he can, constantly pushing past what people believed he can do.

Seen that way, it's not surprising that he seems more like a willow in the wind, cool, relaxed and flexible at all times.

'He just does the best he can, all the time.' You think, trying to summarize it in your mind. 'It either is enough, or it isn't, no point in stressing about it.'

You don't know if it's quite right, but it's an inspiring thought.

Then you notice his hand reach for you, surprisingly. He could have easily gone way faster than that, but he seems to leave you the chance to step back.

But you don't, unlike Endeavor, you trust Edgeshot.
>>
He doesn't grab you, taking hold of your half-cape instead and wrapping it over your face and neck like a scarf.

>"We better get you started on proper dynamic entries." He says, giving you a pat on your pauldron and standing up.

"Yessir!" You loudly reply, with a blazing smile on your face, ready.

The last two days of your internship aren't quite as exciting as the first ones, with patrolling relegated to a mobility exercise and watching from afar how the pro did his job.

It's still far from boring, though, with training ramping up to compensate. Nothing new, but you don't really need to learn more things. The hours of reiteration with the guidance of a mentor who knows how things are meant to look like is far more helpful than the barebone basics on another handful of techniques.

Day in and day out you work on your smokescreen, your jumps, hops, wall runs and size shifting on the move, how to hit the bundle of nerves at the side of the neck and how to knock the air out of someone's lungs in a single hit.

Not to say it'll come effortlessly, but your muscles are used to trying the moves by saturday, the last day of the internship.

It's at the doors of Edgeshot's office on a sunny sunday morning that the three of you meet for the last time this week.

>"I take great pride in returning that which was lended to me in even better condition than it was it was given to me." The hero says as you clutch your metallic suitcase, hugging it close to you. "I believe you are no exception."

In contrast, Johai's gear seems to be carefully packed into a square, almost cubical bundle that the younger ninja holds behind his shoulder with a string.
>"It was great to study under your wing, master." He says with a bow, which you follow.

Not real reverence, but earned respect.

"Yeah." You say, lacking in gravitas but not honesty.

>"I would be glad to have you again, next time the opportunity presents itself." Edgeshot comments, in that cool, serious yet relaxed way of his.

>What do you do?

The only reason you weight as little as you do is that your skeleton is made of something better than bones, nice light wood. Everything else is as heavy and tough as you have been able to make it with your hard work, strong enough to lift a horse…

Which is why you try to hold back a runaway tear before it leaves your eyes.
You are too tough for that kind of silliness.

...Right?

"...Does that mean you'll miss us, sir?" You say, pouting as you give it up, letting a couple of tears fall down your cheeks. You aren't beyond crying at a farewell. "AH KNOW AH'LL DO!"

>"I-!?" Is all your mentor manages to say before you lunge at him, a sentiment echoed by Johai as you also wrap your arms around him, bringing both close and squeezing them, shaking them from left to right and to the left again.

"THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHIN'!" You loudly say, practically shouting as you crush them between your arms and heart. "I'LL MISS Y'ALL!"

Then you notice something poking you on the side.

Almost instinctively, you let them go and push them a bit away, stepping back and looking at them alarmed as Johai tries to catch his breath, red faced.

Edgeshot for his part, looks like a noodle, clearly having used his quirk to escape the crushing part of your hug.

>"I was wondering if we were really going to go through the entire week without that kind of incident." Your mentor comments, waving his hand in front of himself as his body retracts back into human shape. "But yes. I think I'll miss mentoring eager heroes..."

>"Heavens... I- I could already see Airi crying over it." Johai comments, hand over his chest as he still tries to normalize his breathing.

"Who?" You ask, wiping your tears with your sleeve.

>"My girl." The student replies, making you raise your eyebrows in surprise.

>"No one would have risked putting you under the same roof as a single teenage boy if there was another option." Your mentor tells you, pointing some sort of thin grey rod at you.

You suspect, and hope, that that was the object that poked you.

It looks… like a short stick, with a sharp tip and two little branches moving diagonally.

"...What's that?" You ask, before shaking your head and looking at Johai. "...You have a girlfriend!?"

>"...Is it that surprising?" The boy asks with an expression you can't quite decipher.

You get the feeling that you might be back on your stomping grounds of boot chewing.

>"Well, I'm sure she must be a lovely girl, so no need to go into that." Edgeshot interjects, placing one of his hands on one of Johai's shoulders and one over one of your own, saving you from digging yourself into a deeper hole. "I wanted you to have these, I'm certain you'll find some use for them."

"Huh?" You let out looking at the stick in his hand, and the… wedge and rope in his other hand. "A… Hairstick?"

Maybe the other thing is a trowel, then.
>>
>"A discrete one." The hero says with a nod, grabbing it from the shorter, unsharpened end and brandishing it like a tiny knife. "You can't bring weapons to school, but no one would take a young woman's hairstick. Make sure to show it off to the next villains to ambush you."

>"...That can't be a common occurrence." Johai comments in clear disbelief, weighing the wedge in his hand and pulling the rope. "One time alone was nigh impossible. U.A. made it very clear that they are ramping security even further."

"Ah sure would hope so." You say with a sigh, wondering whether All Might's trick counted as another attempt on your life for this talk.

>"Villains are getting bolder, I wouldn't be surprised if they try again." Edgeshot tells you and you can't bring yourself to disagree. "You might have survived the attack, but they proved a chink in your armor."

Great. You really needed to think about that again.

You take the hairstick, planning on nothing but storing it away, but you are surprised by how well balanced the hairstick is…

Almost wanting to drive your palm into your face, you finally take the hint and spin it around your finger. A shiv alright. You nod at the hero, unsure if you would ever stab someone, but appreciating the gesture.

"...What's his for?" You finally ask, looking at Johai analyze the wedge.

>"He should know." Edgeshot replies, patting you on the head between your horns. "But you should get moving, you are meant to be home today."

"...Seeya, sir." You say for the last time, giving him a short one armed hug before walking off the building and towards the train station.

Then you turn around and wave at them, for a last goodbye. For realsies this time.

Thanks to the privacy of female exclusive carts, you allow yourself to zone off once in the train, paying only half a mind to the speakers to avoid skipping your stop.

It was a good week, all things considered. You helped with some villains, even if they were small fries. You learnt a lot, and will certainly miss that place and the ninjas…

But you missed your Momma and friends too! And you need to get Tin fixed!

You are really looking forwards to some calm hours in your room, some quality time with your mom and sleeping in your own bed…

With all that in mind, you don't waste time with silly things as walking, opting to jog from the nearby station to Momma's house.

Instantly, you notice something odd.

Momma drives a small-ish red car in which she only fits thanks to her quirk.

The huge black jeep with polarized windows parked on the street in front of the house is large enough that she could easily drive it at full size with more than enough room for her horns. Maybe it's more like a small truck.

You stare at it for a couple seconds before shrugging, digging in your backpack for your keys and slamming the door open with a swift kick to the base.

"HOWDY MA'!" You yell as you stomp in, excited to be the closest you'll be to home while this side of the Pacific.

Then you feel a very particular range of sensations and feelings.

You are glad to see your Momma sitting at the kotatsu.

Similarly glad about your uncle sitting opposed to her, between the massive bull of a man and your momma, the rest of the place looks undersized.

You are worried about the bandages around his face and the disheveled look on his too-flat face.

The thin, tall but clearly very young horned boy in front of you covering his face and sobbing while pointing his cowish tail at you makes your heart clench.

The sudden feeling of your shirt getting thousands of times heavier just tops the surprise, and topples you, forcing you to fall forwards, knees hitting the carpet and nothing but your chest saving you from smashing your nose against the floor as well.

You are thankful for the inches of clearance but the hit still hurts like heck.

All this to say you are more confused than anything else.

>"ANGUS!" Uncle Rik yells, making the little kid sob louder.

>"Stop that, you are making things worse!" Momma interjects, straight up punching him in the arm. He takes it without flinching. "You okay hun'? Ah'm sure he didn't mean that, didn't you?"

>"N-No!" The boy says, lowering his hands and tail, showing tears falling down the kid's face. "P-please don't be mad, miss…"

Disoriented doesn't quite how you feel as the horned, and seemingly behooved boy approaches you, grabbing your arm and trying to help you stand up.

>What do you do?

So I guess Angus' Quirk is density manipulation? That's a reasonable relative to ours and Momma's size-changing, he alters mass but not volume like we do. Looks like he doesn't have good control over it, yet, must have just knocked his dad over with it, too. Come to think of it, didn't Rikuto have a broken nose last time he showed up, in the post-Sports Festival interlude? This isn't the first time Angus has accidentally slammed his dad's face to the floor, is it?

You have no idea what's going on, and only a vague idea of who this calf, this boy is or might be.

But it doesn't really matter. There's a sad little boy in front of you, everything else can wait.

"Hey there little guy." You say, taking a cue of what you've seen adults try with you and crouching to be at eye level with the boy. "Thanks for the help, Ah'm Ushi, Ah take it yer Angus?"

You tilt your head and smile, trying to be as non-threatening as possible.

>"Uhm... Yes miss." He answers, turning his head to glance at the adults in the room, then back at you. "Why aren't mad, miss?"

You chuckle at that, slowly covering your mouth as you do in the traditional japanese way you've seen Momo do.

Elegant, harmless and calm, all you'd like to project right now.

"Oh, quirk accidents happen all the time when one's little." You tell him, digging into your pocket and digging out a small bit of lint, then using your quirk on it, expanding the little ball of fuzz into a tennis-sized one. "But Ah reckon we all get better at it as we grow and learn. Just keep tryin' okay? One day you'll get the handle on that quirk of yours."

>"You really think so?" The boy asks, his tail swinging happily from side to side, and pressing the lint against his cheek.

"Oh, for sure sugah. You'll get it down pat, pat~!" You tell him, patting his fluffy hair between his rather-too-large-for-his-age horns.

He steps closer and leans onto you, so you take the opportunity to wrap your arm around him and hug him even closer, letting him rest his head on your chest and snuggle.

Feels right, in a way. Makes you feel fuzzy and warm.

>"Uh, miss? What's your name?" Angus asks, suddenly confusing you.

"Ah already told ya, I'm Ushi!" You tell him, smiling still.

>"You look more like a Meushi." He tells you, taking the winds out of your sails as he points around the room, first at you, then your Momma, then at your Uncle, then at himself. "You are Meushi, Aunty's Ushi, Dad's Osuushi and I'm Koushi!"

It takes a second to register what happened, all the while your Mom and uncle try to stifle a laugh.

He doesn't seem to grasp that your name is actually Ushi, thinking instead you are telling him you are a cow.

He just called you all Heifer, Cow, Bull and Calf.

...You aren't sure if you have the right to be offended if it's him that says it.

Wait.

"Hol' up." You say as you stand up, grabbing the not-so-cute anymore boy as you do and walking towards the kotatsu the adults are sitting around, holding him out in front of your uncle. "He's yours? How old is him? How come Ah didn't know Ah had a little cousin'?"

>"Well..." He says, looking around the room, clearly uncomfortable. "...He was living with his mom, okay?"

Your own mother looks at her brother with a raised eyebrow and a lazy smile, her expression just shy of 'keep squirming, you deserve it'.

You wonder if all siblings are like that all the time.

Not really. Sure, that does technically answer the question, but it doesn't quell your indignation at the idea that a father would not know his calf.

Kid. You meant kid.

"So, what are y'all doin' down here?" You ask your uncle and cousin, but not really expecting the later to know.

Instead, you pull him closer, hugging the boy and holding him up like a plushie.

Once more, you can see your mom glaring at her brother, her tail whipping around in irritation while his stands on end, clearly uneasy.

>"Dunno." Angus answers, squirming a bit in your arms until he's seemingly comfortable. "The trip was fun though. I saw a fish owl by a bridge!"

"Oh, those are cool." You tell him gently rocking him from side to side, genuinely surprised. "...Reckon Ah didn't think there were any left."

>"Well, aren't you a curious one." Uncle Rik says, reaching for the bridge of his nose, wincing when he touches the bandages covering the area. "Damn. Uhm… Well, I thought it was finally time to leave, now that I don't have anything to tie me down anymore, so I thought I could ask Katsumi to stay here for a while. Just until I find a place for us."

Rolling her eyes, your mother just reaches towards him and hu-

Nope. That's a headlock.

>"And we'll let them stay, right Ushi?" She says, looking at you as she gives him a noogie. "Even though... They just… Dropped by… Without... Telling anyone..."

You look down, then lift your cousin a bit higher again to look at him.
He shrugs, ears flapping about and you just hug him again, a bit tighter this time. Cute.

"Ah mean, they are family and we have room." You say, chuckling. You always can make more room, be it living quarters or more space for Tin in your backpack. "Oh! We are missin' one!"

You carefully let Angus stand on his own hooves and go dig into your backpack, left abandoned next to your suitcase once you saw the small yet tall boy sobbing.

Once you secure your objective, you turn around, presenting your friendly white robot to your family, using your quirk to cloak it in mist for an instant and enlarging it to a third of its size, about the same height as Angus.
>>
>"Hell's that!?" Your uncle yells, cringing and falling back, taking Momma down with him. Impressive in an embarrassing way.

>"It's just a nice friendly robot, you moron!" She tells him as she gets up and goes to headbutt him.

He intercepts it, and they bump horns, bouncing off each other, glaring at each other.

Then they throw their heads back, laughing.

>"It also mixes some mean cocktails, I'll show you some time." Your momma tells her brother, slapping him on the shoulder with the kind of force that usually topples furniture, yet only shoving him a bit to the side.

You just have no idea how siblings work.

>"Whatever do you need, mistress?" Tin asks, in a voice that now that you have something to compare it to, really does sound like a child on the phone.

"This is Tin!" You introduce your still damaged robot, pointing at him with pride. "Friendly, likes to play and apparently, an enabler when Ah'm not looking!"

You may or may not have made your Momma's ears fold with a glare at that last point.

>"Ah don't have a problem." She says.

Everyone else looks a bit confused at that.

Having done a road trip recently myself, I was in no mood to get into hard topics or serious discussion following it. If Angus and Rik feel anything close to the same, it would be better to have these talks after sleep, that way, Rik can feel reassured that he has actually found a safe place for them both to be in (and minimize the chance that Ushi ultra-fails the face roll to the extent they immediately leave) as well as provide some rest to Ushi herself.

So my vote is [Start the next thread with the >promise< to talk the next morning] and if that induces the same face roll, thats fine but that context should change the matter from being an unwanted lecturer when failing to failing to convince Rik to promise, so not nearly as risky.
