So yes, there was a bad start delay here. Again: doggos. They've been kinda super needy lately, so I spent some time playing with them. They will chase a damn tennis ball forever, haha. Oh well, at least they got it out of their system. Till tomorrow, anyway, haha!

Archive here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=Strike%20Witches%202016

And in other news I got my old coffee pot set up here now! So no more falling asleep on the keyboard!

=============================================================================================================

You feel kind of out of place as you're guided to the dining room of the palace by Kyou. She and Wendy have both had time to change- and had clothes proper for them available- while you're still in your flight suit. It's clean enough, of course, but certainly not formal by any stretch of the imagination. What makes it worse is the palace was clearly ready for Wendy- and while you suspect the clothing made available to her was found in a hurry, it was still more than was done for you. You're not sure if that's a snub though- especially not with the knowledge that the emperor himself was a fighter pilot. It's a limited worldwide fraternity, one that has it's own set of rules.

You're seated near the end of the table, past the imperial family, next to Wendy. You're only slightly bothered that you're not allowed to serve the food yourself- to you, that's part of cooking the meal, but Kyou assured you that the serving staff must be allowed to do their jobs, and it wouldn't be proper anyway. Even you cooking is a bit of a stretch- as eager as she is to show off your skills in that area to her family, it's not viewed the same here as it is back home. It's something you'll have to keep in mind, you think.

You're joined at the table by your aunts, Katsumi and Jessica. Jessica sits across from you, while Katsumi occupies a space nearer the head of the table, just past Kyou's father- her brother.

"So you made Gumbo?" Jessica asks, eyeballing the pot as the serving staff ladle bowls- per your instructions- full of it before adding a ball of steamed rice on the side.

You nod, then frown. "I thought you said western food wasn't very popular here?"

"Burgers aren't popular in the palace." She says, trying to clarify. "I mean, no one ever eats the ones I cook."

You blink at that- Jessica was never a noted cook- indeed, you weren't even aware she could cook, beyond her frankly unworldly abilities with a coffee pot. It does put things into perspective for you, at least a little. "I see." You say, diplomatically, as one of the staff place a bowl in front of you.

"I don't understand why you'd let him bother with servants' work." Akemi says from her place next to Kyou. "I mean, I understand he's just a westerner, but it still seems pointless when we have a perfectly capable staff in the palace. At least you should have let your servant do it. She is just a servant, is she not?"

>>
"Considering the records of my sister's acquaintances, I don't think she should be so easily dismissive of Commander Maloney's war records." Kyou says, serenely. "Remind me, have any of them successfully completed a term of service?"

"That doesn't matter." Akemi returns. "They're at least honorable."

"Wendy's presence has allowed us to successfully complete objectives otherwise impossible." Kyou says. "I have yet to see any of your nationalist clique rushing to the recruitment centers."

"Because they're more valuable in the diet." Akemi retorts. "We need some kind of civilian leadership with some backbone."

"Enough." Takashi cuts in. "Akemi, your rudeness will not be tolerated at this table. Our guests have our commanders in Korea singing their praises. You will be silent."

Akemi's frown turns vicious- like she's thinking of arguing- and then she very visibly deflates under her Father's glare. You have to hand it to the man- when he scowls, it's impressively intimidating. You briefly wonder if that's part of having been an infantry commander, or if it's just a natural gift he has.

There's silence for a second before Kyou's mother speaks. "Lieutenant, I'm afraid we still don't know much about you." She says. "It's evident you're a talented pilot and a gifted cook, but our intelligence briefings were necessarily short." She smiles. "It's almost as if the mystery surrounding your mother has carried on to her children."

You smile a little at that- you're sure that, in some ways, that was Maman's doing. In others probably not- just sloppy or hurried work. For Maman, of course, it was probably part of a game- see how much she could prevent the IG from being able to build a comprehensive dossier on you.

[x] That's kind of Maman's doing because of coven politics stateside.

You nod. "That's maman's doing." You say.

"I see." Kyou's mother responds. "Is her concern over you due to your parentage?"

You nod. "Mostly. It's tied in with coven politics stateside."

"But it should no longer be necessary, should it? You are, afterall, now Kyou's." she says- getting a very, very light blush out of Kyou. It'd be undetectable, you think, but you know what to look for. "Or was our briefing on the Wyvern's unique control system incorrect?"

You shake your head. "Not incorrect, exactly." You say, trying to think of how to phrase your response on the fly. "But the continental congress only meets a few times a year, and hasn't had a meeting since before we finished selection."

"I see. So the lack of information is purely due to timing?" She asks, and you nod.

"I don't understand why witches would bother." Akemi says. "With no disrespect, there's no reason to."

"Other, of course, than the glaringly obvious." Kyou returns.

"There are families just as famous in Japan." Akemi says. "The Shimazu or Tosa are easily as well known as the Bishop family, and equally powerful, I am certain."

"Unlikely." Kyou says. "Especially with the Bishop talent being such a poorly understood thing."

"Regardless." Her father says. "We were told that your training was rather unusual by American standards. Is it true your survival training was cut short?"

"Maman may have... " You hesitate, looking for the proper word. "Overprepared me for that sort of thing."

That gets a raised eyebrow. "Overprepared?" Kyou's father asks.

You nod. "A little. The navy elected to hold our survival and resistance courses in the south. Mine was in Florida." You shrug. "We traveled plenty, but maman made sure the swamp is like a second home."

"I see. Your instructors were not well prepared?" He asks.

You shrug. "I don't think they knew. They realized it pretty quickly, but-" you pause, then smile. "A lot of my babysitters were witches that had worked with DEVGRU during the war."

"I see." He says. "So the guard wasn't wrong in their assessment of you?"

"I haven't seen it, but from what I've heard, no." You answer, honestly. "I think maman always hoped I'd follow in her footsteps than dad's but..." You pause, then shake your head. "I don't think she ever really expected I would, either."

Takashi nods. "So your father's influence drove you to be a naval aviator."

You frown- Frank's influence on you was very limited, such as it was. Far more Merlin's influence, really- to some extent you wonder how much she planned this out. While you don't buy into Stasya's opinion that Merlin's a genius level social architect, you wouldn't put it past her to try to nudge you in the 'right' direction.

[x] Not really my father, no.

You shake your head. "Not really my father, no." You say.

"Ah. Then your adoptive aunt?" He asks, and you nod.

"Merlin made sure I got my first flight in early, and that was it." You respond, smiling lightly at the memory. "She also made sure I got plenty of time to climb all over their jet at the vought plant as a kid."

"I see." He says. "It appears she has done the united states navy a powerful favor."

"A pity she was only able to do so for them." Kyou's mother muses. "Having her as an advisor to our own wyvern program would have made things go much more smoothly."

"She's busy with our aircraft." Kyou says, quickly. "And as our liaison and controlling officer, she'll doubtlessly be very involved with the prototype nature both of Wendy's aircraft and many of the systems in our own."

Her father nods. "Of course. We have discussed with the American navy the possibility of using you to assist with our own wyvern program. We can't afford to remove you from the Korean front yet, but once we can you can expect to be returning here."

Kyou nods, her expression neutral. You get the feeling she's not exactly thrilled with the news, but unwilling to go against her father. Still, somehow you're bothered a little by it- there are teams which are far better suited to the role, and usually the job of initial type instructors are given to the oldest wyvern teams still in the navy- in effect, the oldest train their own replacements. The system isn't perfect- in cases of war, like this one, crews in the training squadron may have their term of service extended to train replacements for combat losses, which, given the age of the oldest wyvern crews, isn't really something that can be maintained for more than a few months, really.

"Of course, it will be difficult to make sure you're able to best serve the empire, as you've decided to leave Imperial service to fly with an American." Akemi says to her sister in a way that makes it very apparent she considers it to be a mistake of the gravest kind.

1/2(?)
>>
"A pity my younger sister isn't able to see past her own foolishness at the opportunities this brings to the empire." Kyou returns. You note that both her father- and, perhaps, more importantly, grandfather, don't appear too impressed by the younger girl's sniping attacks.

"Opportunities? What would those be? For another American to enter the palace? Certainly there is little a western barbarian could teach one of us. Asking for their help so soon is weakness, and the weak-spined fools in the diet that pushed for the request will face the people's anger in the coming election."

"Is that so?" The emperor says- the first he's spoken. You blink at the tone- it's dangerous.

Kyou smiles, looking over at you. The look in her eyes is that Akemi has fallen directly into a trap. You don't dare speak, of course- the emperor doesn't look happy and while you don't think he has a problem with you, you don't want to give him one.

"Perhaps I have been too lenient." He continues. "I cannot exile you, but I can certainly make certain your friends no longer have a chance to spread their poison."

"Grandfather, if I may?" Kyou says, as he takes a breath to make whatever pronouncement he plans to- he looks at her and you'd have thought she made a mistake by speaking, but you note she bows her head, but returns the look. "My pilot's mother is known to us- and is willing to work in favors. Perhaps she could serve a dual purpose in removing Akemi from the influence of these snakes and at the same time keep the family neutral in the civilian politics of the nation?"

The emperor blinks- and you see the faintest of smiles creep across his lips. Kyou's father's expression doesn't change- it's impossible to read what he's thinking, and her mother has a guarded look.

"I will consider it." The emperor says, after a second, turning to leave.

For her part, Akemi looks like she's been axed- you get the impression she let her mouth get carried away before her brain engaged. Her mother looks at her for a second, before looking down the table at you. "Your mother already has taken an apprentice in the form of the Commander Bradshaw, has she not?"

You nod.

"And you have a younger sister as well from her?"

You nod again. Liz is only a half-sister, of course- as far as you know, you're the only child your parents ever had together.

"Then I do not see how it is possible for Akemi to be sent to her. No coven would allow any one witch to amass such a powerful network without some sort of check on her."

You frown. "Well, the bayou tends to work differently." You say, pausing for a second to try to figure out how to explain it properly. "Political power isn't as important as social standing to the mamans, so it wouldn't be that big a problem to them." You don't add how Maman may pass on the simple worry that Akemi might embarrass her in front of the other matrons- a distinct possibility, given what you've seen. Even Liz, hellraiser that she is, knows how to behave, at least where other people can see. You, of course, were a 'prince' there- and while it meant every single maman in the state was all too happy to spoil the hell out of you as if you were their own grandchild, it also meant misbehavior on your part was more or less unthinkable. On the up side, as a kid you never wanted for toys or candy.

"But Maman moves in her own ways, regardless of what the coven thinks. I'm sure the other matrons would call in favors she owes them, but if it was sold to her in the right way she wouldn't care."

Kyou's mother looks a little shocked by that- it's easy to forget that during the shogunate, this sort of thing was used explicitly to keep the warlords in check- and there was more than one imperial daughter that went on as part of another household. She's got to be seeing similarities- especially with maman's on again, off again claims to be descended from the Merovingian line of French kings.

"Would the continental coven not become involved?" She asks.

You shrug. "It's hard to say. I'm not that well informed about what goes on there, but I don't think so."

"The American continental coven has far less power than the imperial coven does, mother." Kyou explains. "and they must still negotiate with independent groups such as the one Morgan's mother belongs to."

You nod. "The continental coven's power to influence anything like this is almost nil." You say. "And they couldn't do anything if maman agreed."

"I find it strange that's so." Kyou's mother says. "Surely they'd have attempted to gain some influence over the smaller covens, especially with the unique talents of the witches from your area."

[x] The bayou's traditions are older than the continental coven by centuries. The mamans aren't going to let them.

You shake your head. "The bayou's traditions are older than the continental coven by centuries. The mamans won't let them." You say- the coven wasn't granted official recognition as an independent body by the French till sometime in the 1720s, but by then the influence of west African witches had already started seeping in- and it would have been difficult for the French coven to exert any kind of real control anymore, given the distance. Given that the bayou even maintained it's independent nature during the civil war- even in the face of the confederate coven that had absorbed all the disparate covens in the south to that point- it's hard to see how the continental coven could possibly hope to integrate the bayou in the way Kyou's mother indicates.

She nods. "I see." She says. "Akemi, then, would be under the auspices of these mamans?"

You pause. "More or less." You respond. "Assuming my maman agreed to look after her, they'd want to meet her, and she'd have to do the rounds, but-"

"Do the rounds?" Kyou asks.

You nod. "Any witch in the bayou is expected to help out. Someone get hurt or lost or sick, the coven helps find them or heal them. If there's a disaster or something, the witches come out in force to help prepare and recover. Remember what the witch we flew with in Iceland was talking about?"

"Olimpia?" Kyou asks, and you nod.

"Yeah. It's like that." You say. "I don't think she'd have to do it all alone, but maybe with Liz or one of the other younger girls."

Kyou's mother looks thoughtful for a moment. "The witches there serve the people of the area?"

You frown. "Kind of?" You say. "It's kind of mutual. A family might ask for a coven witch to come help them out with an emergency, but the coven expects them to at least feed her and make sure she's got a place to sleep for the night if she can't get home afterwards."

"I see. I don't think that would be very suitable for Akemi, for reasons I'm sure you understand." Kyou's mother says.

"Unless, of course, she's exiled." Takashi responds, frowning at his youngest daughter- who looks like she's only just barely keeping it together at the prospect. "She forefits any protection from the guard if she is."

"Not that such a thing would be necessary with the mother of night as a caretaker." Hohiro says- the first he's spoken.

"Do you think your mother would agree to such a thing?" Mizuki asks, finally.

"And perhaps spending some time in America would teach you the value of our ally." Takashi says, looking at Akemi- who nods, looking kind of numb at the sudden turn of events. "And the possibility of learning from the mother of night would serve you well."

"I'd rather learn from Japanese instructors." Akemi responds, quietly enough to indicate she knows she screwed up badly- but sullenly enough to let her feelings on the matter be known.

"You don't have a choice." Takashi responds. "Thanks largely to your inability to control your tongue."

"And I cannot imagine they could teach you anything the mother of night couldn't." Kyou muses.

Akemi shoots a glare at her older sister- but manages to keep her mouth shut. You imagine it must have taken impressive effort on her part- of course, part of it may be the sudden shock of hearing she may be sent into exile of sorts.

"And Liz could use a good influence." You provide.

Akemi looks at you like you've said the stupidest thing possible. "I have no desire to make friends."

"Then your time there will be incredibly long and difficult." Takashi warns, watching as the servants bring in the rillons. You notice, too, how every witch suddenly turns to gaze at the dish as it's brought out.

"What's that? it smells good. Like, really, really good?" Jessica asks, in english.

"Rillons." you answer.

"Sounds French" She says. "Is it french?"

"Kind of." You say. "It's Wine caramel pork belly."

She blinks. "You can do that? That sounds illegal. And magical."

[] Try them, then you tell me if they're illegal or not.

[x] Try them, then you tell me if they're illegal or not.

"Try them." You say, noting that the Japanese witches are using chopsticks to eat them, one bite at a time. It makes sense, you guess- they're not really a finger food, afterall.

"This is illegal." Jessica declares after the first. "Oh my god Morgan who taught you these? Was Brigitte training you to take over witches via food? This is unreal."

You shrug. "Picked it up off a cooking show." You respond.

"Illegal." Jessica repeats, pacing herself- though you can tell it's with a little effort. "Who told you?"

"Told me what?" You ask.

"Mizuki and her daughters have notorious sweet tooths." She says, leaning in with a conspiratorial look- then she frowns. "Teeth? Sweet teeth? I'm not sure. Either way, they're all suckers for sweet things, and something like this?" She shakes her head. "You couldn't make a more perfect way to impress them."

"That easy?" You ask with a smirk.

"Well, I think Kyou's already a lost cause where you're concerned anyway." Jessica says. "I mean, I don't know if you're as dense as Frank was, but I bet even he could have told."

You shrug- you're pretty well aware.

"So do you intend to return to your apartments in the palace here, or will you be moving into your own now that you have your own household?" Hohiro asks Kyou- the question interrupting you and Jessica a bit.

Kyou pauses. "I believe we'll be staying in my own apartments." She says, "Though I imagine Morgan may wish to return to Shimofusa base and remain with our aircraft."

[x] I'm fine with staying here if that's what you'd prefer.

You think for a second, using the time to get a read on everyone- Kyou's father and brother seem pleased enough with the rillons, but Her mother and sister are clearly lost in the food. Jessica, you have to admit, is probably onto something here- you've discovered a weakness. Even Wendy seems to really be savoring them- though you're not sure if that's because she really enjoys them or because she thinks you're not going to make them again anytime soon. "I'm fine with staying here if that's what you'd prefer. " You say, after a second- it's only overnight either way, and you're still 'on the clock' so to speak- any major alert or incident will see you back at Shimofusa as quickly as the palace can manage.

Kyou nods. "Very well. I would rather like to stay here overnight- it will be good to spend a night in my rooms after so long away."

Takashi smiles at that. "What makes you think you'll be staying in your rooms?" He asks. "Your grandfather has graciously granted you the eastern palace as your private residence."

That gets her attention. "He has?" She asks, sounding surprised. "I am honored, but I've hardly earned the right-"

"Are you questioning the emperor's wisdom?" Takashi asks- his voice is serious, but you're not sure he can ever not be serious- but there's a look in his eyes that indicates it's more humorous than not.

Kyou pauses. "No, of course not." She says. "I will be honored to use the palace as my private residences, then."

Takashi nods. "As you should be." He says, pushing his plate away and standing. "Now I intend to go speak with him on the matter of your troublesome siblings." And with that he turns, leaving the room.

"Oooh, the eastern palace." Jessica says. "That's a really nice place. Katsumi was offered it but we turned it down for an estate outside the city. You'll really like it though, it's almost as nice as the imperial palace proper. You're closer to the city, but that's really kinda cool if you think about it. All those skyscrapers can be kinda pretty."

You nod, though internally you're not sure- the business district of New Orleans never held much interest for you, and while Tokyo is certainly interesting to fly over, you're not sure you'd be entirely comfortable living in the city.

Dinner is finished a few minutes later- the witches have utterly demolished the rillons- three pounds of pork belly, all gone, with Kyou and her mother eating by far the lion's share. You don't mind, of course- you kind of suspected they'd be popular as you cooked them.

"Morgan, would you take Wendy and have one of the staff show you to the eastern palace?" Kyou asks- it's more of a command, really. "I'll be there shortly, but I wish to discuss some things with my parents first."

[x] Of course. We'll meet you there.

You nod. "Of course." You say as Wendy stands. "We'll meet you there."

You lead Wendy out of the building- more, you're led out by one of the house staff, an older looking gentleman who, despite his position as a domestic servant, gives you the impression of a tough, competent fighter. That must be something they do around here, you think- the Emperor of Japan is famously well protected, it only makes sense that the house staff has at least a little combat training. Of course, all the men will- with conscription active in the empire, every male has at least basic training under their belt, barring the few exceptions, like Hohiro.

"This is quite a change from the carrier." Wendy remarks as you follow the servant through the wooded imperial palace compound. Briefly, you wonder how old this place is- hundreds of years, certainly. Most of the buildings are retrofit to modern standards, of course- many are even newly built, you know, but still. "Rather impressive, really. It reminds me of Barin, in many ways."

"Castle Barin?" You ask- You're sure it is, but there's also the small town, on the coast near the famous hold.

She nods. "Yes." She says, looking around. "Rather larger, of course, and much more... " She pauses, looking for the right word. "Grand, in a way. Serene in others."

"Old." You supply, and she nods.

"They've done excellent work to keep the modern amenities from intruding." She responds- though only a little, you note, with the skyscrapers of the city clearly rising into the night beyond the walls, visible through the trees. "Still, I can only imagine what it must be like to live in a place such as this. How grand it must all be."

1/2
>>
"I don't think you'll be imagining it for much longer." you point out.

There's a very slight hesitation in her step, but she nods. "Quite true." She agrees. "I will admit, it's all been quite a shock. I would have hardly expected to be in this sort of position six weeks ago."

You smile. "Moving too quickly?" You ask.

She shakes her head quickly. "Oh no, not at all." She says. "It's just- I rather thought my military career was over after Megalith. I'm grateful that it's not, of course, and incredibly pleased to have been brought back to it like this."

"You're feeling better about this, then?" You ask, remembering her prior protests about being too slow to keep up in combat, and not able to learn much more- in effect, worrying she'd get left behind as you and Kyou flew more.

She nods. "Very much so. Miss Kyou made it abundantly clear I would not be leaving her service for as long as she could possibly keep me, and that she currently had need of me in my current place. And I must admit, had rather underestimated what Tessa was capable of." She laughs very lightly at herself, shaking her head. "Foolish of me, I should have trusted that Miss Wells would create miracles, of course. It's all rather reassuring."

You nod. "That's good to hear."

"Of course," She says, "I am still somewhat troubled by my own performance in combat."

[x] Still? What bothers you?

"Still?" You ask, and she nods, though slightly hesitantly.

"Yes." She answers after a second. "Yes, I should think so."

"What bothers you?"

There's another pause. "I'm too strong." She says.

You blink- and it's only through effort you don't laugh at the complaint.

"I know it sounds foolish." She adds, as if able to read your thoughts. "But I know the limits of my ability. Regardless of what others may say, I've never been incredibly powerful, though I've been quite lucky with my own talents and the training I've received."

You nod.

"But I know my limits, and I'm regularly and rather easily able to exceed them." She says. "In our flight over Korea, I was able to shield against weapons that should have easily been able to defeat it. I'm able to push Tessa far faster than I was in testing and training, and I'm able to do so without feeling any strain or effort. My weapons shoot further and strike harder than they did in training as well."

"And that's a problem?" You ask

She shakes her head again. "Well, no, not really, but it is rather unsettling." She says. "I've heard-" She pauses. "Stories, I suppose, of how your father and Miss Wells' talents worked together, and of course I've talked to miss Wells since then. She told me what it was like to fly with him."

"And you think it may have been passed down?" You ask.

She shakes her head. "No." She says, sounding sure of it. "This is nothing like she's described to me. Rather, this is something... "She hesitates. "This is something forcing it's way into my powers. There is little support, yet all my abilities are being pushed farther than I've ever been able to push them before."

You frown. "So you're being boosted?" You ask- which does fall in line with what your father was able to do for Merlin, as near as anyone understands. It's been something Maman spent some time looking into- she had a vested interest in understand it, once you were born. As near as she could tell, Frank serves as some sort of combined magical supercharger and battery- though she's far from the only matron to research the topic. Her primary argument is she had free access to both Frank and Merlin for her work- but even so, it's heavily disputed.

1/2
>>
She nods. "I believe so." She says. "My concern is- " She pauses.

"That I'm like Frank." You supply, and she nods.

"Yes." She says. "I'm aware you've had rather more education on the subject, but-"

"But you're still concerned."

She nods again. "I'm sorry, it's simply- I wasn't there, at Crete." She says, as an explination. "But I know what happened."

You smile. "So do I." You respond. "And don't you worry, maman taught me better than that."

She nods as you turn a corner in the path, a large white building- the front of a traditional-looking Japanese castle- coming into view. "Regardless."

You shake your head. "Maman taught me better than that, Wendy." You insist. "An she give me de tools to manage anyting like dat much better."

She blinks as your accent comes out- but then smiles. "I suppose I hadn't thought of that. Miss Kyou insisted that I could trust you completely, and-" She hesitates. "I find I do. It seems odd to say it, but I feel far more at home flying with she and you than I did with your father and Merlin, years ago. I'm sorry for troubling you."

You shake your head. "It's hardly troublin, non." You say. "You be worried, an ya bring dat to us, an ya listen and accept dat dis be different. Be doin far bettah, I tink, dan Papa's wives, oui."

She smiles. "They do tend to continually worry about his health." She agrees as you walk into the castle- finding that, inside, it's far more modern. Still incredibly well built- and with hints to it's age remaining, regardless, but with an entryway that would be just as at home in the Hollywood hills. "Though you must admit, with some reason."

"Oui." you say, motioning for her to sit on one of the benches near the door, and she does so without any question. You'll wait for Kyou here- you don't think it's quite right to make yourself at home in what is, afterall, hers- even though you know that means it's effectively your home as well, now.

2/3
>>
"I wonder where the head maid's rooms are?" Wendy asks, after a minute- just as the door opens and Kyou steps in. She apparently heard, because she smiles.

"And what makes you believe you'll be using them?" Kyou asks the older witch, who fairly jumps off her seat.

"I- um." Wendy looks over at you, and you just shrug. "I had assumed-" She continues

Kyou shakes her head. "You assumed incorrectly. You'll be taking rooms near ours." She declares.

"If you're quite sure it's proper-" Wendy responds.

Kyou looks at her. "Wendy," She says, in a way that indicates she's explained this before. "Were I to order my staff to prepare your sleeping arrangements in the same room as Morgan and myself, it would be proper. Simply because I ordered it. Don't worry about this sort of thing while we're here."

Wendy blushes, but nods mutely.

"With that said, I am rather tired. I suspect it was the wonderful meal." She says. "our rooms are upstairs."

You follow her up the stairs, Wendy sandwiched between the two of you- Kyou points out her rooms, and Wendy seems almost happy to disappear inside them.

Once you're inside yours, however, she puts lie to her statement of being tired- indeed, she's, if anything, more energetic. You can't complain about the lie though.

=====================================================================================

"Wendy expressed doubts to you?" Kyou asks, looking at you via a mirror as she pulls her hair back into it's ponytail.

You shrug, pulling on your boots. "She wasn't exactly clear on them. She claimed it wasn't because of Frank, then because it was a sentence later."

Kyou nods. "Understandable. She knows you well enough to know that being compared to your parents isn't something you're fond of, but she still has valid concerns. Do not put on a shirt until I've had a chance to see to your back."

You stop in the act of pulling on a tan undershirt and set it aside. "It's still strange for her to be that bothered by it." You say.

Kyou smiles as she turns around. "Is it?" She asks. "Consider that she's under more stress than we are. from all the stories I've been told, she's been quite sheltered up till now, and being thrust into a linked team is no doubt proving difficult for her to adjust to emotionally."

You nod- she's correct in her assessment, so far as you're concerned. It's something maman pointed out more than once, too. Frank no doubt did what he felt was right- and you tend to agree with the decisions as you've heard them, but Wendy's been almost treated like a child since then- living on property owned by the Styles, taken care of like she isn't quite capable of taking care of herself. At this point, you're forced to admit, maman is right- she probably really isn't, not really.

Of course, Maman always said that while indicating that Tabitha and Rachel were doing Wendy a bad turn by not bringing her into their household, but you're not so sure you agree with that. Things would have been different, for sure, but you're not sure for the better, either. Either way, it's worked out for you, though.

"And consider that your father's talent's drawback passing itself down to you is a distinct possibility." She continues, as you hear the muted pop of her summoning her familiar- and then the warmth of her applying her healing ability to the furrows cut in your back. They won't scar over- they won't leave a mark at all, so far as you're aware- but it's still a little disconcerting- you're afraid you might ruin the sheets, if nothing else. "We both know that that's unlikely, in so far as anyone understands these things, but it's a valid concern, especially to her."

"It's still something we ought to address." You point out. "Maybe it is just one more thing, but she doesn't need to be worrying about that too, along with everything else."

Kyou nods- you catch the motion out of the corner of your eye. "That's true, and I agree. The difficulty is in how much can we reassure her?"

1/2
>>
You frown. "What do you mean?"

She sighs. "I've of course told you of what I am. While I'm not wholly a creation like your sister, I am perilously close."

"So it's you?" You ask.

Kyou nods again. "I was ultimately designed to serve as the ideal leader and warlord, should it be necessary. Enhancing others is within my ability." She explains. "Of course, with only Wendy with us, I can do it to a far greater extent than is normally possible with many friendlies in an area."

You blink- talents are more or less passed down, making them genetic, or so the conventional thought goes, but this is a step beyond even that. "How?" You ask.

Kyou shrugs. "I am uncertain, and don't particularly wish to know." She responds. "My mother is capable of similar things, though to a far lesser scale and degree. It may be a talent I inherited from her, and the rest was simply a case of building upon that."

You nod- that would make a lot of sense overall. Natalya is unusual in that, while she's terrifyingly powerful, she's not got any particular standout talent. Anything she can do, another witch can to- just not nearly to the same degree. The same is more or less true of Kyou, you realize- her shield is incredibly strong, but any witch can generate a shield, and while she can apparently allow for reduction of inertia, enhancing speed and maneuverability of a machine is something well in the capabilities of most witches.

"So what do we do about it?" You ask.

2/3
>>
Kyou pauses. "As I see it, we have a few options. One is to invite her to our bed."

You blink. "And how is that going to solve anything?" You ask.

Kyou smiles. "Perhaps once she understands our depth of feeling for her, she will worry less about us."

You shake your head. "I don't see how that's going to do anything besides get her naked. Besides, wouldn't that just make her worry about us more?"

"Perhaps. It may take a period of time for her to adjust." Kyou admits. "Though I do believe it can be dealt with by forging a closer bond with our teammate. Once she understands she can trust us completely, perhaps she will be less inclined to assume we're going to injure ourselves."

You frown- her logic seems pretty flimsy to you. "And our other options?"

"We can simply allow the MIU to do it's work." She says. "It has, afterall, worked very well on us."

You nod, having to admit that yes, it has- you wonder where Kyou was most of your life at this point.

"We can also attempt to explain things to her as they are currently, but I do wonder how effective that will be, considering her background with your father." She says. "She may be less willing to listen to us if we insist upon the same things he did. And I wonder how appropriate it would be to attempt to do so."

You frown. "You were just talking about bedding her." you point out.

"It may be somewhat disrespectful to her to lecture her." Kyou explains. "While I doubt she'd see it that way, I do worry it may appear as if we're treating her as more of a second rate partner, rather than an integral member of our fighting team."
"Maybe you're just horny." You say. Kyou lightly flicks one of your ears in response.

"I am merely providing options." She says, standing up. "Regardless, it is something we must deal with soon."

We've got a tie vote right now gents, so I'm going to go find something to eat and then call it!

I'm considering doing a fixed 20-25 minute limit to help fix this sort of things, where in case of a tie, I'd just discount votes after that window. What do you guys think about that instead of using a tiebreaker period? I don't want anyone to get caught out and feel like their vote doesn't count, but I don't wanna delay anymore than I have to for a tie, either.

[x] However you think is best, then, I guess.

You frown- it's not a topic you're especially interested in handling right now, but it is something that needs seen to sooner rather than later. And while you do have reservations- a lot of them- about Kyou's apparently preferred plan of action, you're also willing to trust her, at least mostly. "However you think is best, then, I guess." you say, pulling your undershirt on and turning around to look at her as you stand up. "But I reserve the right to weigh in on any plans you have."

Kyou smiles. "Of course." She says. "And I don't intend to act in haste."

You nod- that was your other concern. "Fair enough. Are we having breakfast with your family?"

She shakes her head. "No, and in any case we're several hours early." She says, crossing the bedroom to slide open the door. "My parents have indicated they'd prefer we accompany my sister's aircraft to America, and intend to relay that request to the navy at the first opportunity, which will be today."

"You're ok with that?"

She nods after a pause. "I believe so. I understand the plan now is to confuse the Chinese and delay their ability to combat us on an even playing field, temporarily withdrawing us from the front will help achieve that."

You shrug- you're not sure how you feel, but it does make sense. They're looking for you now, you know, and letting other drakes enter the fray will let them know that they're even less safe than they thought they were. Still, you'd prefer to still be in it, instead of returning stateside. Of course, that's dependent on maman agreeing to the proposal- which she may not, you know. That said, the possibility of having a direct line on both sisters of the future emperor is probably more than she can resist- the ability to call in favors from a world leader is one she prizes, you know.

"Of course, I'm not pleased about this." She says.

"About the palace?" You ask.

She shakes her head. "About not flying. We have little to do without flying, and it's painfully apparent."

You nod- that's a fair assessment.

"Regardless, it does allow us to see to tasks such as painting Muninn. And I expect Wendy will be eager to see her own aircraft's new scheme as well. Shall we go collect her and return to Shimofusa?"

You nod, and Kyou steps out ahead of you, her flight suit in a tote bag. You're wearing yours, of course- laundered overnight, you'd found it set out for you in the morning- you wonder when that was done, but at the same time, you're kind of impressed it happened at all. Kyou must have left it out for the domestic staff, you guess- there's no way they'd have stepped into the bedroom without you knowing.

Wendy's still in her rooms, and smiles as she opens the sliding door for Kyou. "Oh, good morning!" She says- she's dressed in PT gear, though she's still barefoot. "I'm just back from a morning run, I'd not thought to see if you'd wished to lead."

Kyou nods. "It's fine." She says. "Are you ready to return to the airbase?"

"Oh, quite." Wendy responds. "I'll admit I'm rather eager to see our aircraft after they've been painted."

Kyou nods again. "We'll leave you some privacy to change." She says. "If you'd prefer, you don't have to wear your flight suit to the airbase."

Wendy nods, and you step back out of the room, having looked around- Wendy, true to her own nature, hasn't 'moved in' at all- all her things were still in her bag, ready to go as necessary. It's part of how she's lived ever since she entered the military, you know, even with her time with Spellcaster she moved around a lot with the squadron. And the air-racing circuit, while not quite as demanding all the time, still required living out of hotel rooms and a go-bag part of the year. It's easy to pity her, you know- although now, it seems a little silly to do so.

She emerges a couple minutes later, clad in her flight suit. She blushes a little at Kyou's raised eyebrow. "I didn't pack any additional clothing." She says, as an explanation. "And I didn't want to take the clothes your family provided for me."

"Why not?" Kyou asks. "They're yours, afterall."

"Oh I couldn't possibly!" Wendy protests. "They must have cost a fortune."

Kyou smiles. "They're expensive, I'm sure." She admits. "But do not forget my family's personal assets are in effect unlimited. Providing clothing is hardly going to strain us, regardless of what clothing that may be."

"Oh." Wendy says, looking a little more embarrassed. "Should I collect them, then?"

Kyou shakes her head. "No, the domestic staff will see to them, and just as well you have clothing to wear here before your things are moved from your apartments in America."

Wendy blinks. "I'm sorry, but-" She blinks again. "I'm moving in here?"

Kyou nods, looking over at you. "Yes. Is that a problem?"

"Well, no, but-" Wendy pauses, then shakes her head. "No, not at all." She says.

"Good." Kyou says with a nod. "Let's go, then."

Kyou leads, leaving enough space between herself and you and Wendy that Wendy leans over a little to speak more quietly. "Is she angry with me?"

"No. What gives you that impression?" You say, surprised.

"I had assumed you'd spoken to her- " She says, stopping when you laugh.

[x] Wendy, Kyou's not going to ever be angry with you. Neither will I.

You suppress a sigh of frustration. It's impossible to forget that Wendy's personal life- even with the last twenty-odd years taken into account- hasn't exactly been the healthiest, and she went from incredibly abused to incredibly sheltered. And, by the sounds of it, Kyou doesn't exactly intend to change things too terribly much- besides perhaps making her part of a relationship.

"Wendy, Kyou's not ever going to be angry with you." You state. "Neither will I."

"It's just-" She starts, and you shake your head, cutting her off. "Wendy, I know. But we're not replacing you, for any reason. We want to hear your concerns, so we can help deal with them. we're not going to be angry."

She hesitates. "But-"

You shake your head again. "No. Wendy, you're here because you're one of the best, ok? We want you to speak up when you have an issue. You're not here because you go along with whatever we say or whatever we want. Merlin would have never asked you to come back if that's the only reason for it."

Wendy sighs. "I'm sorry, it's just-"

"I know. But no more of this." You say. "Unless you plan to hand in your wings and resign, you can't leave us anyway, and even if you do that, Kyou's going to try to keep you around. Stop worrying about making us angry at you."

She nods, though somewhat hesitantly.

You smile. "Besides. if you keep up like this, Kyou's going to start really going out of her way to show you how much we value your company."

Wendy flushes a furious crimson- she got the hint immediately. "S-she will?"

"That wasn't an invitation to keep up like this." You point out. "besides, if that's all you wanted, you could just ask her."

"I-" She turns, if anything, even more red.

You suppress a smile- Kyou probably listened in, but kept anything she wanted to say to herself.

The helicopter waiting to ferry you to the airbase is one of the IJA's locally-built, licensed variants of the AW101- as you board, the crew starts powering the aircraft up, the whine of the turbines quickly overpowered by the thud of the rotors as the take off the pad and nose to the east, climbing out over the city.

You ride in silence, with Kyou sitting next to Wendy, across the compartment from you. Wendy's blush remains- you note that she fidgets a little, too. You're not sure if your message got across, but she certainly took something from it. You hope it means an end to her paranoia about her place here- you're getting a little frustrated with that, even knowing what you do.

Shimofusa airbase hasn't changed overnight- You can still see the hangar where Muninn and Tessa are sitting, though the doors are all rolled open. You land on the pad away from it, with the chopper taking back off once you've disembarked and cleared the rotors. Kyou frowns as the rotor wash blows her ponytail around her head and into her face, but grabs her bag and heads towards the hangar.

Inside, Muninn and Tessa have both had the new scheme applied- the crews must have worked overnight. Both aircraft are a brilliant metal finish, with a simple, war-era roundel on the fuselage between the wings and tailerons. A flat black strips runs along the nose and around both sides of the canopy, along with the black and white 'invasion stripes' added to war-era IJAAF and USAAF aircraft before the largest invasions to aid in ground spotting and, oddly enough, IFF for surface antiaircraft crews.

The tails of both aircraft, meanwhile, are painted in a gloss white, with dark gray mountains and a depiction of a castle looking suspiciously like the eastern palace overlaid by a lovingly detailed tree branch, red and pink cherry blossoms trailing across the taileron from the branch at it's leading edge with a few near the aft.

Kyou nods, pleased, and you note that the crew has all lined up nearby, all at attention- and all very clearly on the back half of a long, long shift. They must have started work as soon as you landed, practically. She turns to them and smiles, bowing to them. "Thank you." is all she tells them before straightening back out. "It is gorgeous."

You have to agree, and nod, along with Wendy. "It is quite striking." Wendy comments. "I do wonder what Miss Samantha will have to say when she sees it?"

You're not sure- Merlin has never really indicated any kind of preference for paint schemes, and seemed plenty happy to go along with whatever was suggested, preferring to spend her time on the technical side of things.

[] I'm sure she'll like it.
[] I'd be surprised if she even notices.

[x] I'd be surprised if she even notices.

You shrug- Merlin isn't exactly the most observant at times, especially when she's distracted by something else. "I'd be surprised if she even notices." You say- Wendy smiles at that.

"She can be rather absent minded, can't she?" She says.

You nod.

Any further discussion on the topic is stopped by the thud of approaching helicopters- more than one, indicating it's at least one member of Kyou's family. You're proven right as the light utility bird sets down, one of the ones that lifted you from the base yesterday, and her Father, unaccompanied by anyone else steps out. You not with a bit of a surprise he's dressed in an IJA combat uniform- one that's clean and well-tailored, but does nothing to disguise the older man's powerful build, or the series of pockmark scars on his left arm.

He nods once from his position outside of the hangar, and walks in. Kyou walks over to stand next to you and Wendy as he does so. "Kyou." He says, coming to a stop. "You will be escorting your sister to America."

Kyou blinks, looking over at you. "With respect, father, I cannot without orders." She responds.

"You have not received them yet?" He asks, seeming slightly surprised by the information. "I was told they would be relayed as soon as possible."

You shake your head. "We've received no orders, sir." You say- the rank pins he's wearing peg him as the Japanese equivalent of a two star.

"Hmph." He grunts, looking displeased by the information. "My wife is seeing her off now, we need to track those orders."

"Maman agreed?"

He nods. "Your mother agreed to take Akemi on as an apprentice witch, and she can complete her academy time in the United States." He says. "At least two years, and she will not return to the empire at all during that time."

"So it is an exile?" Kyou asks.

"I prefer not to discuss family matters in front of outsiders." Her father responds.

Kyou looks over at you and Wendy somewhat pointedly. "I see no outsiders here."

"Regardless of your feelings, I do." He responds. "Though I do wonder about those orders. They were supposed to be waiting for you as soon as you arrived. I only meant to see you leave."

1/2
>>
Kyou shrugs, though she snaps her head around, mirroring you- as a runner jogs over. He pants for breath for a second before handing Kyou a pair of folder papers. She hands them to you- you're the element commander, afterall- and you open them, finding an abbreviated set of flight orders directing you to escort an IJAF 787 to NAS Miramar, where you're to remain overnight before returning to the IJN Kaga.

You frown at the paper orders- they seem haphazard, even for what you've learned of the wyvern program- but they do carry Merlin's signature, and a direction that Muninn will have the rest of the briefing, as well as the proper authorizations for the mission.

"I am assuming those are your orders." Kyou's father says. You nod.

"Good. Her aircraft will be flying nonstop, I'm told both of yours can do the same." He says. "I'll leave you to your preparations." He turns to leave, twirling one finger above his head in direction to the helicopter crew as a direction to start spinning up.

You go through your own flight routine quickly- all you had to collect was your Gsuit, helmet, and rescue vest, while Kyou still had to change. Still, the three of you are ready to go quickly, and it seems like you're climbing up the access ladder behind Kyou inside of ten minutes.

You pause at the top of the access ladder- your ejection seat, instead of the familiar dull gray and OD canvas, is painted- at least, you hope that's paint- gold and the material has been replaced with something that looks suspiciously like lepoard print.

You frown before dropping into it, noting that the straps have all been replaced as well, with purple canvas versions. Even the metal clasps on them has been painted to match. Muninn, you note as you turn on the MIU link, seems very pleased with himself.

"Do you like the new upholstery?" He asks. "Mom allowed me to tell the crew to do it."

[] I'm just going to have it replaced anyway.
[] It's very nice, Muninn.

[x] It's very nice, Muninn.

"It's very nice, Muninn." You respond, pulling the last strap through it's corresponding D-rings on your vest and pulling them tight.

The raven- he's resorted back to the bird avatar- preens. "I thought you might like it." He says. "I've been telling the other AIs to call you a pilot named slickback, but none of them are buying it."

You nod. "You have our flight data?"

"And load." He responds. "Tanks in the centerline and inboard external points, self defense load otherwise. Eight pythons, eight AAM-4s, full guns load. We'll be heavy on fuel enough to allow for at least ten minutes at military power, and we can call tankers out of Adak if we need them."

"And Wendy's craft?" Kyou asks.

"My frame was designed to match the wyvern in most parameters." Tessa responds. "And I can exceed them easily in range. I will not require in air refueling unless we engage in combat for over an hour. I am loaded with four Pythons and a pair of AAM-4 missiles, as well as a full load for my guns."

"Very well." Kyou allows as you start to power up, allowing Wendy to roll in front of you. "Do you have our escort target?"

"On civilian and military radar, yes." Muninn says. "They've taken off from Haneda airport and are following a traditional civilian air-traffic corridor to the northeast. Our intercept point will have us joining them just off the coast of Kashima."

"Cameras." Muninn warns as you roll. "Civilians off our port side."

"Wyvern spotters." Kyou notes. "Hardly surprising. I wonder if they've been up all night waiting for a glimpse?"

"No doubt we'll be on the internet soon." Muninn responds. "I'm sure Kaga and Lovelace will be downloading every picture of me they can."

"No doubt." Kyou says as you line up. "We have the runway, clear at your discretion."

Wendy starts her roll a couple seconds before you do- Tessa will accelerate about the same speed as Muninn, her lighter weight offset by the massive power disparity in your turbines. You don't even feel any buffeting from her wake turbulence as your gear leaves the ground and you're airborne again.

"Gear is up and locked, board is green." Kyou reports. "I will never get tired of that."

"I'm coming to prefer catapult launches." Wendy says, falling back into formation with you. "They're rather exhilarating."

>>
You don't join the two witch's conversation, instead preferring to stay quiet and let them converse over the secure MIU net. It's as close to private as it's possible to get between the two aircraft in flight- between it's tightbeam nature and the encryption on it, it's nearly impossible to eavesdrop on. For her part, Kyou does seem to be able to get Wendy to relax easily- even getting a rare, honest laugh out of the older witch on occasion as you close in on your intercept point.

The IJAF 787- one of their fleet of VIP transports reserved for use of important state, but critically, not imperial, passengers is visible from miles away, two tone gray scheme resembling a naval aircraft more than an airforce one. You adopt an escort position close enough to intercept any threat- while you doubt there will be one, especially this far from the front on the other side of Japan, you're not willing to take any risks, either.

The flight takes agonizingly long- but it's entirely quiet. The route you're following isn't an especially popular one, and right now there's not a lot of civil traffic in the air anyway- the war's still too new, and too many companies, having learned painful lessons during the soviet war, are all too willing to instantly cancel flights into and out of combatant nations at the first sign of war.

NAS Miramar is exactly how you remember it- the flight line is still packed, and you're put into a brief hold while a night flight takes off. Wyvern row is mostly empty though- three aircraft remain here, none of them partnered with a valkyrie, though. You don't recognize any of them.

You're met on the ground by maman- who's dressed, again, in a pencil skirt and a business jacket, mirrored sunglasses covering her eyes, and her familiar summoned.

"Morgan Laroux-Bishop." She says as you land. "Whatcha be tinkin, be ropin ya maman into this?"

You look over at Kyou. She shrugs, and turns to wait for Wendy.

[x] It sounded like something you'd like doing, maman.

"It sounded like something you'd like doing, maman." You say, wondering where Akemi is. Maman surely has to collect her, you think- there's no way she's simply supposed to get off the aircraft and wait without someone confirming that she's where she's supposed to be.

"Mebby oui, mebby non. Ya not bein de one havin ta have Liz an another girl her age in de same house, non." She says, looking past you at Kyou and Wendy. "So, dat Wendy."

"What about her?" You ask- maman just smiles. You suppress the sigh- but not the eyeroll.

Maman laughs. "dey be sayin she be lovin it, bein back in combat." She says. "An dat de combat data indicate mebby dey be able ta let udda older witches back in."

"Like you?" You ask

She shakes her head. "Mais non!" She says, laughing. "Ya maman have no place in combat no mo, non. But some of ya older sistas, mebby dey be interested."

You shrug. "We've already been asked by the Japanese to help them select their first valkyrie witches."

Maman nods. "Oui, I know." She says. "An dey be on de right track. Right now you an dat Wendy got de most combat experience wid de system. It make sense ta ask ya. Looks good for Kyou, looks good for de alliance."

"Think I should worry about politics?" You ask.

Maman frowns. "Ya be knowin as well as I what dey be interested in. But I be pointin out ya maybe do no have ta be worryin about dem so much. Ya belong to dat Kyou, as far as dey concerned, and tryin ta poach de tings of an imperial princess be more risk den ya be worth."

"And Wendy?"

"Ya be worried dey be tryin ta steal dat Wendy? Now why ya be worryin bout dat, hmm?" Maman asks, grinning. She's never made her stance a secret- do what makes you happy without getting yourself in trouble. That she happens to include in that "Chase any and all witches you may take an interest in and do whatever they'll agree to do with you" doesn't really matter to her- life's too short to pass on enjoyment as long as you're responsible about it.

"She's our teammate, maman." You point out.

"True enough. I be teachin ya too well, boy. Dat papa o yours woulda nevah thought o dat as an excuse. "

You sigh, and she laughs.

"She probably be fallin unda de same ting. As long as Kyou be wanting her around, dat Wendy be goin nowhere." She says. "De imperial family been keeping favored witches close, oui, for centuries. Dis be no different."

You nod.

"Now, ya be walkin wid me." She says- orders, more like. "Be fetchin dem witches and we go get dat Akemi."

You nod, looking over at Kyou and Wendy, both of whom have stopped far enough back to keep themselves out of the conversation, but close enough to indicate they're waiting for you.

After they greet Maman, the four of you head towards the 787, parked on the oversize pad reserved for transport aircraft- or anything bigger than a fighter, really. The walk isn't short- it's not long enough to warrant a vehicle, but it gives you a little more time to talk to maman.

ANd that's it from me for the night!

I've got some stuff to knock out tomorrow- for anyone who doesn't know, I have a pretty badly compromised lung, enough so that even in cold and flu season I've got to be painfully aware of what's going around. Needless to say, I've got some supply shopping to do, haha. I don't think it should affect the run at all, but it might.

I'll be around a little to field questions or comments, but otherwise gents, till tomorrow, cheer!

We autowin all engagements without any damage anyway, but IC this would be the smartest question to ask.

We still need answers to why the Natalya lookalike threw the dogfight.
I still think it's to likely deliver information on orders and possibly assistance - since it's, you know, a super witch. The Soviets could've sent literally anyone else to deliver information otherwise, which suggests CAPELLAN levels of something going on in China...

[x] See what she knows about Chinese counter wyvern efforts.

"Maman, I wanted to ask if you knew anything about the Chinese efforts to counter us." You say as you walk across the pad. "We've been withdrawn because of it."

She nods. "Oui, on my advice." She states.

"You suggested that?" Kyou asks, more than a little surprise- and betrayal- in her voice. "Why? They needed us over Korea!"

Maman nods. "Oui, an ya be goin back soon." She says. "But we wanted ta give time for de spooks ta do dem ting, oui." She explains. "Be a lot of people be interested in makin sure dem Chinese counter isn't as effective as dey hopin they be."

"What do you know about it?" You ask again.

"It not be an it." Maman says. "They not puttin all dey hopes in one ting, non. We know dey been usin Vozrozhedenya for dey own programs like Natalya, and we tink dey've had some successes, oui."

You frown. "But the only superwitch we've run into was the Russian, and she let herself get shot down."

Maman nods. "The Chinese been lookin for her." She says. "De Russians deployed her wid a cover name an story an orders to get herself in allied custody as quick as possible."

Kyou frowns. "That hardly makes sense." She says. "If that was their goal, why not turn her over to a the empire, or a European power before this started?"

Maman shakes her head. "Not widout violating de terms of dem contract wid China." She says. "Dey be playin a dangerous game for money, an dis jus be part of it. De Chinese want a live superwitch from de program to examine and look at, and dey know de Russians be havin at least one. De Russians not real anxious ta be handin her ovah." She says.

"So superwitches are their response?" Wendy asks.

"Part of it, oui." Maman responds. "We know dey also putting work into a drone an AI system, but dey having difficulties. But it be de moah dangerous o de two."

[x] AI operated drones? Didn't we try that already?

"AI operated drones?" You ask, confused. "Didn't we try that already?"

"With terrible consequences?" Kyou adds.

Maman nods. "Oui." She says- the incident, known as the battle of china lake, involved a dozen AI-controlled drones operating as part of a greater drone swarm test. The AI- one of the first generation produced- had a psychotic break during testing, and turned it's drones on the base. Several people were killed when it expended all of it's drones- and all of the weapons they were carrying- in a suicide attack on the operations building, where it's processing center was housed, leveling the building and destroying itself. The fault was later tracked to a latency issue causing a command feedback loop- one that, at the time, was considered too difficult to overcome and the project was quietly shut down.

"So how are they solving the control issues?" You ask. The battle comes up as a reason why Wyvern AIs, unlike many others, can't easily move between datacenters and their aircraft. Even though prior to 2014, AIs were considered 'equipment'- and, thus, expendable- no one wanted to risk a psychotic AI occurring in an MIU or VDNI equipped aircraft. Two years ago, of course, they were reclassified as personnel- meaning that risks to them were far more heavily managed.

Maman shrugs. "No one knows, non. But I heah through my contacts dat dat Lovelace be takin a likin to ya. If ya be friends with him, he be willin to talk to ya."

"The NSA Intelligence?" You ask. From your initial impression, you weren't quite sure what to make of him- all AIs trend toward eccentricities, you know, but him...

Maman nods. "He be an odd one, but eager foah friends." She says. "You ax dat Merlin about him sometime."

"Is that why that AEW aircraft was so important?" Kyou asks.

>>
Maman pauses. "Mebby." She says. "We know dey lose dey deputy air chief in dat plane, and dem testing someting wid dey dragonkilla program would explain why he be there, oui." She stops as you reach the base of the air stairs, where the IJAF crew is disembarking, heading down the ramp to waiting transport. They'll be staying overnight, and you're sure they'll be loading return passengers from the consulate in the city- one of the things the empire does is allow any government employee to get passage on military transport aircraft, if there's room aboard for them. Even now, a couple civilians descend the ramp. While Akemi is an imperial princess, her quasi-exile means she's been stripped of a lot of the privileges and honor attached to her position- in this case meaning the flight wasn't specifically for her. Of course, your presence here means that she's still got some privileges- while the alliance between nations is strong, it's unlikely the navy would have allowed for a wyern escort for just any aircraft.

The princess is one of the last off the aircraft- with no escort, she looks a little lost, honestly, and for a second, you feel bad for her. She notices you and Kyou without apparent emotion- though she blinks when she sees Maman. Given the stories of her, you're sure Akemi expected something other than this vaguely plain looking office lady.

"It is almost sad." Kyou remarks to you. "Before you realize that she brought this on herself."

[] And that it's not nearly as bad as she's afraid it's going to be.
[] Kids make mistakes though. Exiling her from her homeland for being rude at dinner is overkill, even for us.

[x] And that it's not nearly as bad as she's afraid it's going to be.

"And that it's not nearly as bad as she's afraid it's going to be." You add- in a bit of irony, you realize she'll probably get your old room, since you'd helped maman pack your things after flight school. You'll always have a home there, you know- but both you and maman also knew that you probably weren't ever going to live there again. Briefly, you think about arranging to have your things sent to Japan, then push the thought away. No reason to worry about it right now, you think.

"Be worse if she don't behave, non." Maman says, though she smiles at the teenage witch as her feet hit the pavement. "You be Akemi?" She asks.

Akemi nods hesitantly. "She doesn't speak english, maman." You supply.

Maman smiles. "Is that so?" She asks in Japanese. "Well, we'll have to fix that. Let's go, Akemi. Morgan, if things are calm enough, I'm going to tap some of my contacts to have you home for the spring parish gathering."

You nod- that's several months off, yet.

Akemi looks at you briefly- almost like she's considering saying something- but, probably terrified of making Maman angry, hurries after her as she leaves.

Kyou watches as they go, then turns to you. "It is time we found food." She announces. "Perhaps that steak house we ate at when we were here last?"

You nod- you'd like to go to santa's, of course, but you're willing to skip it this time. While the burgers are excellent, you've learned Kyou likes her beef in bigger portions.
